Ko-oren's EAGLES at the Fifth Aussie Rules World Cup

Why the Eagles? In absence of players from the central bits of Ko-oren, and as long as Aussie Rules isn't that popular in those areas at all, the team has opted for Eagles over Dragonflies.
Colours: Brown, with yellow, green, and blue elements. Away: White, with green and blue trim.
Which languages are spoken by this team? About half of the team speaks the rarest language within the Ko-orenite language family: Tarrashall. The rest speaks Mawr (a Gaelic language). A small minority speaks English, French, Gehrenna, or Dutch. The names of the players should speak for themselves.

yByciri is a new face at fullback, the other two return from last time. yFfachwis is undisputably the best player in the Ko-orenite league, while Pundaroo comes back for another ARWC alongside him, and Joserra is new. The ruck-group is very young - a position that's being reinvented in the league. Thunjerdindhen is back for another ARWC, with teammate yGwllcwl in the same 'unit', both of them made it. Arguably Winung is a touch faster. The strongest difference between 'players who made the team' and 'players who didn't' is at the half forward positions, Sathongauthen making the team as a rare non-Mawr and non-Tarrashall. Yembeane is likely done after this one. Curramback is the first name on the sheet, most likely, not having lost his touch since the last ARWC and still doing great for Myaranowra. Wanbin returns, while yMadocmac is new.

The strongest units will likely be the full forwards and the halfbacks. Curramback is a true target man, relying on physical traits to get marks inside 50, rather than Wanbin's style of finding space for uncontested catches. At halfback, yFfachwis is slightly older but a fantastic disruptor and someone who catches on to play styles quickly. Joserra doesn't have that skill, but he's simply unbeatable around the 50 metre line. We're looking for both Yembeane and Sathongauthen to provide accurate kicks for the full forwards to catch/finish - or just kick themselves from inside 50. Winnlip is a commanding figure in defence, Bodhidhen is a tenacious 'little shit' in the ruck position, while Sabilline is the best C/W - not that those positions necessarily need to be named together, but that's more or less how these positions evolved in the Ko-orenite game.

The team will change its tactics a lot depending on the opposition. Handballing down the corridor, or widening the field by patiently finding uncovered players on the wings, or kicking down the middle, it's all on the table. If the Eagles are comfortable playing their own game, they'll play it a bit wider, through the air.

People of TJUN-ia...WE ARE BACK, MATES! After what felt like a long old time, the Jaguars of TJUN-ia are back for the 5th Aussie Rules World Cup, this time hailing from the interesting nation of StrayaRoos. It certainly has felt like a while but it's great that we're back...and for good reason, Last time out, David Scott's side clicked like never before and made it all the way to the Grand Final...only for Sarzonia themselves to beat us by 4 in a cracking finale. That result did sting, but it also showed how far the new #3 in the world has come from its beginnings. And now? Well, Steven Cox is aiming for the flag of course! It's another 16-team ARWC with a group containing Ko-oren, Alice Bay and an unranked side in Lacfroid. Some things don't change...but can we get back to the Big One this time?

The winners of the National Rugby Championships after Australian Rules were a team of Giants, Ogers, Trolls and Orcs from the wild north.
They just call it RAUSBY.

They are lead by a strategic mastermind and preacher who hold them all together as the blue team, abiding the rules as much as needed.

Postby Sylestone » Sun Jul 10, 2022 7:41 pm

It's that time of the two-year cycle again! Two years ago in The Alani, Sylestone faced their least successful ARWC to date - not winning any of their games convincingly before losing the Ko-oren's Eagles in the quarterfinals. It was a rather disappointing display from the second-ranked side in the multiverse, and thoroughly deserved to drop the two spots they did - below Baggieland and TJUN-ia - to fourth, particularly so considering that the Hawthorns had won the ARWC II on home soil and were finalists in the third edition, also partially played at home. Interestingly, the Sylestoneans have not looked to adjust their squad for ARWC V too much, only making one or two changes and keeping 33-year-old Felix Armstrong as skipper. They might be backing their talent, but even so, this side are going to need to prove that they are a team capable of challenging for the ARWC title and support their selectors' decision to maintain the current squad. It won't be easy, though. First up are Copper Cuprum who, despite never having won an Australian Rules match to date, will still be very tough challengers indeed. Following them are the hosts who, despite having only won one match from three in their history, will be playing in front of a raucous home crowd determined to see their side home against the odds. Finally, unranked Kommar are the Hawthorns' final challenge, who may well also possess a significant threat. So while Sylestone may be favourites for each of the three matches, only one thing is for certain, and that is that their opponents will be giving it their all. If the western Esportivans do wish to win enough games to challenge for the trophy, then they will need to fight long and hard indeed.

A lot of teams that have won three out of four world championships in their sport face daunting pressure to win that fourth title in five matches, and sometimes to capture their third consecutive title. If the Sarzonian national Aussie Rules Football team feels that pressure, they're not letting on.

Part of that is attributable to the status of the sport within Sarzonia. A new league is just getting started with a modest six teams whilst a loose collection of universities have taken a three-year transition from the informal structure of extramural sports (OOC: think club teams in college sport in the U.S.) to a formal collection of three conferences of eight teams each. The sport regularly features on the inside pages of various newspaper sport sections except for the three times the Stars hoisted the Aussie Rules World Cup trophy.

The other part? Well, Katie Sampson no longer has to deal with the heightened scrutiny that sometimes greets a female manager of a predominantly male sport. She has the benefit of Sarzonian Aussie Rules Football media being fairly tame in comparison to what she'd face if she went to manage in Baggieland. It was just reality. In a Baggieland or a Sylestone, she'd face questions at a rate that seems foreign to her now. She was also aware, though, that her team in spite of its relatively limited pedigree in the sport had three gleaming trophies adorning the team's facility on the outskirts of the Dave Wilson Athletic Complex. Sampson knew any time she felt like an imposter, she could go outside her office, walk down the hall, and not only see the three trophies, but also see three gold medals and the lone bronze from the one time the Stars didn't make the final.

Sampson's demeanour at the last training session in Woodstock before the team boarded their charter flight to StrayaRoos for the group stage was relaxed. She laughed as she saw various players clowning around, smiled at the jokes, even the mild ones at her own expense, and she shot a few jokes at some of the diehard supporters who'd lined the practice pitch. She saw one player make a mistake, and she quickly called out a correction. The only time she took things with a grain of pepper was when full forward Reggie Brown got into a fight with left full back Jackson Clark.

"Hey! Hey! Hey! That's enough!" she shouted, jawing at both players briefly. She knew she'd have to wait to really confront them until after the training session was over and the team had the chance to shower and get dressed. That was exactly when she did confront both Brown and Clark. It turned out to be little more than the kind of tempers that can fray when teams face each other in scrimmaged and not evidence of a larger beef between the two players, as both men shook hands after the conversation in Sampson's office concluded. It was well that they made peace, however. Sampson assigned the two men to be roommates in their team hotel in StrayaRoos.

After the team finished their dinner at the nearby Pacitalian restaurant, she looked over the schedule. The Stars were assigned to Group C and were set to open with unranked Croblade. However, Matchday 2 would see the titanic clash between the top ranked Stars and the sixth ranked Los Armarillos of HUElavia.

"We have no room for error," she would tell assembled media. "HUElavia beat us in the group stage opener in the third World Cup. We could be in trouble if we take them too lightly." The Stars would close their three-match group stage with Quebecois Acadiana, a team that had no ranking points, but were level with the 29 ranked teams so rated because of their previous experience in the tournament. Even though the gap between the Stars and No. 2 ranked Baggieland was larger than any other gap between teams ranked one spot below or above them, Sampson knew better than to take anything for granted.

"We'd rather not have the tougher matchup in the quarterfinals, assuming we get there in the first place," Sampson said, not at all sounding the part of the manager of a team that qualified for every knockout round since the tournament first began.

5th Aussie Rules World Cup in StrayaRoos

GAME OVER, MAN, GAME OVER!

Kriegersien loses probably decisive match against Soldera!

In a fierce battle Kriegiersien lost the first match against Soldera and is now as good as already out of the competition.

"We now have to crush Godchouzetsu and Baggieland. Against latter that would be a sensation. We would have to throttle a lot of throstles for that, but if a team can make that, then this one", tried Coach Ololo to convince the press, but it sounded just stubborn after the recent loss.

Fédération Lacfroidois de Football Announces Team for 5th Aussie Rules World Cup

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – The governing body for Aussie Rules football in Lacfroid, the Fédération Lacfroidois de Football, has announced its intention to field a team in the fifth Aussie Rules World Cup, to be held in StrayaRoos later this year. The FLF is a separate organization from the Association Lacfroidois de Football, ALF, which organizes association football in Lacfroid.

Aussie Rules in Lacfroid is primarily contested at the collegiate level, where it replaced gridiron football after that sport was banned by the Ministry of Education. The Ligue Lacfroidois de Football Collégial consists of eight Lacfroidois colleges and universities which contest matches between nine-man Aussie Rules teams. These are played on association football pitches and lack key elements of full-sided Aussie Rules matches, including behinds and marking. More recently, the FLF has begun organizing the full-sided, semi-professional Blu4 league, with representative sides from Champlain, Ville du Lac, and Saint-Laurent. These matches are contested at the Vélodrome National in Ville du Lac, the only venue in Lacfroid large enough to accommodate a full-sized Aussie Rules pitch.

The coach of the newly-minted Lacfroid National Aussie Rules Football Team is Jacque Allard, a former gridiron player for the University of Damascus and Busiris Captains in the Gesemite Football League. Allard has been a coach in the LLFC since its inception, most recently coaching the Routiers de L'Université Centrale to an LLFC championship, and he also serves on Blu4's board of directors. Allard and his technical staff will hold a combine with players from the LLFC and Blu4 at the Vélodrome National in order to determine a roster for the national team.

The new Aussie Rules side will be the first team to represent Lacfroid in international competition besides the association football club AS Bataille, which played a single match in the eighteenth edition of the Atlantian Oceania Champions League. FLF chairman of the board Leon Cottin said that the FLF takes the responsibility of representing Lacfroid on the international stage seriously, especially in light of Lacfroid’s pending participation in the Games of the XVI Olympiad in the Twin Cities, Quebec.

“We’ve been in contact with the CNOSL, and they’re aware of everything we’re doing to represent Lacfroid,” said Cottin, referring to the Comite National Olympique et Sportif Lacfroidois, the Lacfroidois Olympic committee. “We’re being careful to stay on-brand and not interfere with what the CNOSL is doing.”

ALICE BAY FOOTBALL UNION
Alice Bay Union (Australian) Football Team
World Cup 5

Information
The Alicean Australian Football team returns for one more World Cup. The eternal underdogs come once more with hopes to get at least in the Knockout Round. The team is run by the Alice Bay Football Union (in opposition to the Alice Bay Football Association that manages Association Football, i.e. Soccer, and to the Alice Bay Rugby Union that manages Rugby Union.)

Australian Football, sometimes called Union Football (thus the choice of name) is the third sport in popularity in the Commonwealth, behind Cricket and Rugby Union. The sport grew by piggybacking on the popularity of cricket and using its venues. Currently, Alice Bay have a district-based league, much like the Rugby Union System Pre-United 10 and the Cricket T20 Alliance.

Alice Bay is, in NationStates terms, a puppet nation. So I’ll probably have little time and opportunity to manage them, since I have more

probably the last ARWC with this roster. Any doubts, questions or whatever, TG Lisander.

Footy Watch: A Strong Start In A Group Of Déjà Vu

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jul 12, 2022 6:23 am

After a long old wait with our silver medals on our necks, the time has come to put them on display and try to add some friends for us to admire. Yes, it was time for another Aussie Rules World Cup, this time in StrayaRoos, and with a group so similar to two years ago it's practically a mirror image, many will be hoping for similar success. David Scott knew that getting back to those previous highs would be tougher than the initial climb but the pain would all be worth it if TJUN-ia can make it back to the Grand Final once more...but that road won't be easy and everyone knew that for a fact.

Still, we still had to start somewhere and our first opponents would be debutants Lacfroid at Jol Stadium in Panem. Lacfroid, nicknamed Les Papillons, is coached by a former gridiron player named Jacque Allard and for a debuting team, they did alright. 8.8.56 isn't exactly the worst score to get on your debut and their team certainly showed some ability, with Timothé Guignard managing 3.2 all by himself. But we still had a job to do and unfortunately for our new friends, that would mean we had to score triple digits. 17.29.131 can say a lot of different things: we had many chances at the sticks, too many behinds perhaps and those 17 goals were certainly deserved. But no matter how you shake it, we were certainly the better team today and nobody can doubt that. Gregor McHulton managed 5.5 by himself while another 4.2 came from captain Steven Cox himself, so it certainly did feel like one of those days. In the end, winning by 75 points is certainly a great start and deserving of playing that all-too-familiar song we love to hear.

THE CALL
The Jaguars are here to win it all,
For TJUN-ia, we'll play for all!
Our flag is raised, Orange and Blue,
And we all know just what to do!
We'll fight, fight, fight and we'll win, win, win
Until the flag is ours to win!
So come aboard and sing, sing, sing
FOR THE JAGUARS ARE HERE TO WIN!

Two years ago, we faced Ko-oren and beat them handily in the first true sign of what we could accomplish in the ARWC. We would beat them again in the knockout rounds en route to the Grand Final. Now, after all this time, we must face the Eagles once more and you just know that they will want to knock us down. The question is, can we beat them again? Can we prove our worth once more? GO JAGS!

The Sylestonean > Sport > Australian/Southern Rules Football > ARWC V

SYLESTONE OVERCOME COPPER CUPRUM IN TENSE AFFAIR

PALE, STRAYAROOS - Sylestone’s national Australian Rules Football team has managed to begin their ARWC with a successful start, taking all four points out of a close affair with 29th-ranked Copper Cuprum. While debate rages between officially calling the sport “Southern Rules Football”, a name adopted by the Ko-orenites considering that the sport is mainly played in their southern states, or the historic “Australian Rules Football”, adopted from the faraway planet of Earth back at home, Sylestone’s squad of 23 have been forced to leave that all behind them in their pursuit of redemption. While they did record a win to kick off the tournament, it was far from a convincing one, the match providing further, overwhelming evidence that the Hawthorns are not quite the team they used to be. Once again, the kicking wasn’t quite as accurate as it should be and the defence leaked far too many goals. Despite the Hawthorns never surrendering the lead to their opponents, the final, 15-point difference was certainly a cause for concern.

After the first quarter, it didn’t appear that would be the case, though. Thoroughly dominant Sylestone were, much to the jubilation of their blue-and-orange clad supporters which comprised the majority of the 23,000-capacity stadium. Five goals and four behinds the Hawthorns kicked, compared to only two goals at the other end of the field. Up 34-12 twenty minutes in, it seemed another classic Sylestonean shellacking seemed in order.

It wasn’t to be, though. In the second quarter, Copper Cuprum fought back with four goals and a behind, in comparison to the mere two goals and five behinds the Hawthorns were able to produce. It left the game rather delicately poised at 7.9.51 to 6.1.37 with half the game to go, for if Copper Cuprum could continue their excellent work, then an upset appeared a possibility. But a rampage from Sylestonean half-forward Sean Rasp placed the game well back in the fourth-ranked side’s favour, kicking three goals and a behind throughout the half to put his nation well and truly back in the drivers’ seat. Copper Cuprum, though, didn’t disappoint, either. While the Hawthorns kicked four goals alongside four behinds throughout the quarter, Copper Cuprum nearly equalled them with four more goals alongside two behinds to keep pace, particularly in the dying moments before the game’s final break. Despite their efforts, though, it seemed that they were fighting a losing cause, though; the Sylestonean forwards were just too good at scoring… something. They weren’t all that efficient, but they were scoring behinds and goals almost every other minute. With a score of 11.13.79 heading into the final twenty minutes, it was clear that the Copper Cuprum defence had let their side down. If they hadn't conceded so much, perhaps their total of 10.3.63 might have been just enough to take the lead.

But they weren’t going to give up, and stop trying for a wondrous comeback. A couple of lethal mistakes from full-back Fergus Boult handed Copper Cuprum another two goals throughout the first five minutes with the score all of a sudden 80-75 (Sylestone had scored another behind), the match was anyone’s taking heading into the final quarter-hour. Although there were some instances that put hearts within mouths for the sport’s Sylestonean followers, the Hawthorns managed to ward off Copper Cuprum for long enough and capitalised on their opponents’ method of all-out attack, scoring three goals alongside five behinds to cross the hundred-point mark with mere seconds remaining. The final score was a 103-88 victory for the Hawthorns as they moved atop the Group A table ahead of a highly anticipated clash against the hosts - technically pot one for this edition of the tournament. After emerging victorious in their game against Kommar thanks to five solitary behinds, morale will be high within the host nation. But Sylestone are still a good side despite their dubious form at the moment, and are still likely to head into the match as favourites.

In other groups, though, some results were incredibly surprising. Compared to other tournaments, where we’ve seen games with differences above 100 points and sometimes even 200, the highest of this round was Ko-oren’s 134-55 victory over Alice Bay in Group B, asserting themselves as a team to watch out for. Also in that group are the finalists of two years ago - TJUN-ia - who kicked off their campaign with a resounding, 131-56 victory over newcomers Lacfroid. However, neither of those matches are the ones people are talking about. No, in Group C, we have witnessed almost unarguably the greatest upset in the history of Australian/Southern Rules Football. First-ranked Sarzonia were defeated by Croblade by 13 points and to make matters worse, on paper, the Stars really should’ve won. 29 times they scored, but only eight of those were worth six points. And if that isn’t enough from Group C, HUElavia were also dealt defeat by Sylestone’s geographic neighbours Acadiana, who were able to emerge nineteen points clear of the multiverse’s sixth-ranked nation. Finally, in Group D, Baggieland have restored some sort of order with a classy triumph over Godchouzetsu despite being down at the end of the second quarter, while Kriegiersien have again come up short in a close encounter against Soldera.

I must say, though, that if results are going to be similar to what this matchday has produced, very few are going to be complaining. Having such a set-in-stone hierarchy in the sport was only going to hurt its development elsewhere. Perhaps, if unknown teams can begin to challenge those at the top, then maybe, the sport can expand.

And that can only be a good thing.

Southern Rules Eagles win First

In a group that makes us feel like we're in a Groundhog Day-like situation, the Ko-orenite Eagles have defeated Alice Bay in our ARWC 5 opener. The international community insists on the name 'Aussie Rules' where 'Southern Rules' is the moniker used across our archipelago - not because the word 'Aussie', from Latin Austral(is), means 'south', but simply because the code originated in Ko-oren in Mawryshire, the southernmost region of the country.

From there, it spread to West Strand Riding, making Southern Rules more of a Western Rules, but by then, the name stuck. West Strand Riding is also where most of the talent originates nowadays, with Mawryshire obviously still in very close second - but don't underestimate the talent coming in from the rest of the country. It took decades, but some players from 'beyond the mountains' (as they say on the west coast) are breaking through to the top level of domestic Southern Rules.

Ko-oren 19.20.134 def. Alice Bay 8.7.55

It was the West Strand Riding players coming through for us on the opening day. Both shutdown defence, with yByciri especially shining in the contested marks department, and Joserra and Pundaroo excelling in chasing attackers out of our 50. All in all we put on a ton of pressure, and Alice Bay did get some shots off but rarely from a position they wanted. Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, Curramback played a fantastic 1v1 game, catching most of what came his way, drawing away defenders, and giving Wanbin and Yembeane more space to operate. While pressure was our thing in defence, then spreading out over midfield, crossing the field quicker than their defence, and then finding empty spots in the forward 50 was the plan and it worked. Ultimately, Ko-oren won on sheer amount of opportunities at goal, because our accuracy was lacking. If we and Alice Bay had the same number of shots towards the posts, the Aliceans would very likely have won.

If we can figure out better efficiency up front - it wasn't a lack of set shots from a good location, mind you - we're much surer of round two and knockout success. It doesn't seem to be a tactics thing: maybe it's the lower level of domestic competition compared to other teams - where even our top players aren't used to play with this much pressure more often. Maybe it's a mental thing from playing in an international competition: either way, we hope the Eagles figure it out in time.

Something tells me that the top teams are closer together than in the past: unbeatable Sarzonia lost to Croblade. The rest of the unassailable top three did win: Baggieland upstaged Godchouzetsu, TJUN-ia enjoyed a large win over Lacfroid. The fact that we staged such a win over 10th placed Alice Bay gives hope - though we can only hope that the ARWC gets more competitive, all in all. If someone other than the traditional top three can make a deep run - that's great - and if it's us, that's even better. It's hard to argue that our domestic level matches some of theirs, at least.

Kriegiersien loses second match, but can still advance.

Two things need to happen for that:
Baggieland has to beat Soldera good. As further motivation the Giant Team is willing to spent 18 giant barrels of captured dwarven beer to Baggieland if they do that.

Second the team themselve has to destroy Godchouzetsu.
For that the Ogres and Giants were put on diet to make them even more angry and the team drank the rest of the beer with demon blood to raise their power level.

“That may look like an odd and bizarre choice at first”, justified Coach Ololo, “..and it is. But we have to do something.”

Over 200 Players Turn Out for Aussie Rules Combine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Jacque Allard, coach of the Lacfroidois National Aussie Rules Football Team, said Sunday that he was “pleasantly surprised” with the turnout for the national team combine in Ville du Lac.

“We had hotel rooms and meals reserved for 100 players,” Allard said. “When we announced signups and sent invitations, we filled those slots in less than a day, so we had to add more.”

All in all, Allard said, the combine had about 200 players, a mix of active collegiate players and players from the semi-professional Blu4 league, as well as a few playing professional gridiron football in New Gesem. Players underwent a workout at the strength training facilities of l'Universitie des Fondateurs in Ville du Lac and ran through skill drills in the university’s hockey arena and on its association football pitch before playing a series of full-sided scrimmages on the pitch at the Velodrome National.

The scrimmages were open to the public, who came out in droves to watch.

“Living in Lacfroid, you don’t get to see many full-sided Aussie Rules matches,” said Elina Remy, a 19 year-old student at des Fondateurs who came to watch the scrimmages. “Blu4 is great, but you just can’t get enough.”

The team’s technical staff is working through data from the combine to select the national team that will represent Lacfroid at the fifth Aussie Rules World Cup in StrayaRoos. Allard said he expects to invite thirty to thirty-five players to a training camp in Ville du Lac, and from those to call up a final roster of twenty-two for the Cup.

"It's great to have this turnout, because it means you can look for the right players," said Allard. "Everyone who came out gave a great effort, and I'm confident we can field a competitive team in StrayaRoos."

Amy Cartier, a senior at Université des Sciences et Technologies, saw the combine as more than just an opportunity to try out for the national team.

"It was great to come out and play with the best, be coached by the best, and to get to play some full-sided matches," said Cartier. "Playing in the LLFC, you don't get many chances to work on your marking or your long kicks. We're all hoping some of the reps we got today will translate into Blu4 or another full-sided competition."

Leon Cottin, chairman of the FLF board, said he hopes the combine, as well as the national team's participation in the upcoming world cup, will help the sport to build momentum.

"For a long time, there's been this perception that Aussie Rules is just a cheap gridiron substitute, and that people in Lacfroid will never embrace it," he said. "We're setting out to change that perception and enshrine Aussie Rules as a major sport in Lacfroid."
