Procedural Notes
  • The entry from Eshialand was accepted. An association is allowed to send up to 3 teams to FFI competition if desired, assuming the clubs have earned the spot according to FFI regulation.
  • The FFI once again reminds its users that they are allowed to enter their top 2 teams from their domestic league season for the League of Victors and an extra team, based on sporting merit, for the Confederations Trophy.
  • The entry deadline for the next cycle of the FFI competitions is once again the IFCF's entry deadline.

Crown Premier League Preview

The Basian National League structure is the top of the Basian football pyramid. Other leagues, often church leagues, are below, but promotion to the Basian National League is not possible from that level.

The BNL is separated into two leagues, the Crown Premier League and the First Basian League. The champion of the First Basian League is automatically promoted, while the lowest performing side in the Crown Premier League is relegated. The second-to-last finisher in the Crown Premier League enters a two-game play-off with the second place finisher in the First Basian League, and the winner is in the top flight the next year.

Predicted Final Table - Crown Premier League

1 L’embac Ourelasia

2 Alquierdi Crown

3 Ourelasia Hearts

4. Hatem Phoenix FC
5. Barracelio FC
6. Qadir Rifling
7. Basian Blac
8. Leevas Apollos

L’embac Ourelasia

Since the announcement of an eight team national league by the Basian FA during the WC 89 qualifying cycle, teams have been eager to secure a spot in the league, and hyper-fixated on signing stars to stay competitive and draw in fans for the inaugural season, each hoping to build brands that can be latched onto. L’embac Ourelasia, one of the biggest clubs from the pre-war era makes a return, albeit with different management, hoping to become the league’s home for star talent.

With strong wing back combo Orgasni Azizi and Alexandre Galland, the squad features one of the best defenses in the league, which may play a deciding factor in a league filled with offensive talent. Isam Ramada provides a strong, flexible, talented presence in the midfield, and mysterious wonderkid Numair Mahmoud adds his talents to the top of the attack. In a league likely full of surprises, L’embac Ourelasia are favored to win the league with their talented young core.

Alquierdi Crown

It may be fairly obvious, but the team founded by the Emir has some coffers behind it. The club was able to convince the young captain of the national team, Casildo Hana, to join their side, as well as midfield national team duo Makin Moghaddam and Bisma Shehadeh. Like their toughest competition, L’embac Ourelasia, the Crown has its own talented young attacker, though some questions have been raised about Antwaun Kamara’s form. If the young 20-year-old can perform well, then his club has a shot at the top of the table.

The Crown potentially has a better offensive squad than any other team in the league. Like many other teams however, their talented core is very young, with its key players in their early 20’s. With youth comes inexperience, so the Crown’s manager, Ramadan Ally, will have to drill them into shape swiftly before the trials of matchdays start to approach. If they can do that, and shore up their defense, then Crown may end up winning the league.

Ourelasia Hearts

Ourelasia Hearts have been developing a bit of a clamor behind their club before the inaugural season of the Crown Premier League. While they missed out on some great players that couldn’t be convinced to come to Hearts, the club will be looking to show them how wrong they were not to sign with them. The signing of national team winger Hideki Nazar will add a bit of star-power to the capital city side. Nazar has proved to be a valuable player for the national team, who struggled to find the net in the beginning of World Cup 89 qualifying, but grew into the role during the cycle.

Asadel Fahmy, 27, is a talented center back that Hearts will look to for much-needed defensive structure. Hearts have looked to play a more defensive style, as opposed to the popular basian high-chance offensive gambles. Samman Casiltos, the manager, will have to be careful though. If fans think that the manager’s defensive style is costing them games or losing their attention, he may face the hot seat quicker than he would in other managerial spots. Hearts will be looking to find key results that can push them close in the top three.

The rest of the league

If any team were to break into the top three, Hatem Phoenix FC may be that spoiler. With goalkeeper captain Cairo Hatem, somewhat unsurprisingly signed by his father’s corporate club. The team has hired the best goalkeeping coach in the nation to help Hatem into the role, although the young man has already found himself a fairly assured starting spot in the national team. Hatem had a leg injury during qualifying, but has seemingly made a full recovery since then. Right midfielder Mahdi Vaziri will be crucial in build-up play, and Jan Moustafa will be expected to put shots in the back of the net.

Barracelio FC are a team that are well followed by the immigrant community in Alquierdi, but are likely to play second fiddle to Crown due to their lack of a star striker. Certainly able to make some surprises happen after some moves in the transfer window, BCFC are a club with a future that they can shape.

Qadir Rifling replaced Arena Chapel’s spot in the Crown Premier League after its chairman, television preacher George Reed Wambles was found to have defrauded FA officials in the church club’s bid to enter the top flight. Not much is known about the squad other than its bankrolling by the Qadir Rifling Company, an up-and-coming arms manufacturer that has secured several lucrative private-sector offers.

Basian Blac and Leevas Apollos are on the chopping-block for relegation, and will have to steal points from better teams in order to stay up. The Apollos have a strong centre back, Shunnar Huq who is almost certain to be poached if the team goes down. With a series of clubs bankrolled with deep pockets, it may take several years before smaller clubs are able to meaningfully challenge the top with youth talent.

Relegation Prediction
Leevas Apollos

The Apollos were a lucky addition to the Crown Premier League. Their stadium was constructed earlier than others, and their officials had their paperwork in as soon as the FA requested it. Their organization seems well prepared for the challenges awaiting them in the top flight. The lineup? Not so much. They lack a strong offensive playmaker, which will make any attempt to stay up that much harder.

The club’s front office would do well to take the increased matchday revenues and put them into future youth investment, because the Apollos are not going to remain in the top league for long. They have all the makings of a great tier-two side, however, and if they play their cards right, may find themselves a slice of paradise in the league below.

The First Basian League Preview

The second tier of Basian football, there are several teams in this league that have potential futures in the top flight. Both leagues are likely to be shaken up as the new clubs find out how the others play. The favorites in the league are Automotive Club Franciar, who may actually be better than some lower top-league sides, with their defensive tactic prepared to drain the opposing team's energy before striking and finding minor victories throughout the match.

Solam Solara FC may provide tough opposition, however, with a strategy built around its 25-year-old central midfielder Isam Ramada that the Amanas side hope will be a player to build a team around. The sides in this league have found players locally and in scouting competitions across the country. Whereas Crown Premier League sides have had the pick of the draw from the national team’s showings, the lower league has not been as lucky. As a result, until the season starts, most players will be relatively unknown. Stars may arise in weaker clubs, so expect big transfer moves in the first few windows.

Postby Sarzonia » Thu Oct 28, 2021 3:11 pm

Following the dissolution of the Cyanea Joint League and both Sarzonia's and Delaclava's isolation from international affairs, the teams that previously made up the top flight of Sarzonian football fell into disarray.

Initially, the Sarzonian Football Confederation and the Sarzonian Football League (the women's league) soldiered on in the years since Delaclav and Sarzonian teams went their separate ways. However, the SFL in particular began hemorrhaging money, resulting in the league going belly up.

The SFC, however, also reached a crisis point as only two franchises, the Woodstock Wild and the Portland Timbers, were viable enough financially to survive. Those two teams began a barnstorming tour in the hopes of drumming up enough support to re-establish the SFC as a top flight league. It wasn't until two women's teams, the Woodstock Justice and the Portland Force agreed to a merger under the SFL name that there were enough teams to start a viable football league under the SFL banner.

Finally, the league began its first season as a unified league with 11 teams, though the New Jerusalem Nobles ceased operations two days after their final match, a 2-1 away defeat to Portsmouth Spartans.

The league opted not to conduct a postseason tournament for its first year, though Commissioner Joseph Alston announced the league would implement a playoff system for its top four teams. Following the first season, the league would also enter into agreements with second and third division clubs to establish a promotion-relegation system.

Without further ado, here is the final SFL table:

Woodstock Justice 0–1 Wilmington Whalers
Saugerties Snakes 4–0 Portland Force
Portsmouth Spartans 2–1 New Jerusalem Nobles
Rypien Riders 0–1 Portland Timbers
Tacoma Tigers 2–2 Woodstock Wild

CAFA LigAnaia
Edition II

Only about a month later than advertised, finally we cut off for CAFA LigAnaia II.

For the second edition of the CAFA LigAnaia, thirty-six teams from eighteen nations will participate.

Procedural Notes:
  • The late entries from Super Laser Dinosaur Robot Pirate Land, Atheara, Osarius, and Cobrio were accepted.
  • "THE SUPER COOL AWESOME SUPER TEAM OF SPACE LASER DINOSAUR ROBOT PIRATE ALL STARS" were registered as "SLDRP ALL STARS" in line with their appearance in the previous edition.
  • The initial group stage draw was discarded after an assistant to the organising committee, one "Captain Jerry 'Fuzznuts' of Devizes", walked across the control panel. Captain Fuzznuts declined to comment when asked about the incident.

Notes: CAFA Coefficient is based on results from the last three editions of the CAFA LigAnaia.
Association ranks are the sum of all coefficient points earned by their teams in the last three editions.
Unranked teams from associations with prior entrants were assigned 30% of the association's rank.

Qualifying Round
In the qualifying round, the eight lowest ranked teams face off in randomly paired two-legged ties for the right to participate in the group stage.
Teams from the same nation could not be drawn against each other for this round.
For this competition, in all two-legged ties, away goals will not count double.
If scores are level after two ninety-minute legs, the tie will be settled via penalty shootout.
Ties on CAFA Coefficient for this draw were settled by the drawing of lots.

(PYA) FK Vselitamak p 0–0 OG Khaz Modan (GNK) 0–0 0–0 (3–1 pen)

Group Stage
The four winners from the Qualifying Round joined the remaining entrants, and all were seeded according to CAFA coefficient and split into four pots of eight. One team from each pot was placed in each group, with no two teams from the same nation permitted to be in the same group.
Each group then completed a six-game, double round-robin tournament of its own, with three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw.
The top two teams in each group progress to the round of sixteen.

Tiebreakers, when required were applied in the following order:
  • head-to-head results,
  • head-to-head goal difference,
  • head-to-head goals for,
  • head-to-head away goals,
  • overall goal difference,
  • total goals scored,
  • total away goals scored,
  • number of matches won in the group stage,
  • and a coin flip.
Notes: CAFA Coefficient is based on results from the last three editions of the CAFA LigAnaia.
Association ranks are the sum of all coefficient points earned by their teams in the last three editions.
Unranked teams from associations with prior entrants were assigned 30% of the association's rank.

Final Stage
The eight winners from the round of sixteen progress to the Final Stage: a seeded, single-leg, double-elimination tournament.
Seeds were determined by CAFA coefficient, with ties broken by drawing of lots.
All matches were to be settled on the day; using extra time and penalty shootouts as required.

For each game in the top bracket (except the final) the home team is the higher-ranked side.
In the elimination rounds, the home team is the lower-ranked side (except the final).

Elimination Round Three
(LDP) SLDRP ALL STARS 1–2 Wirr Tsi (CMT)

SLDRP ALL STARS are eliminated.

With two teams remaining, the final can take place, at a neutral venue selected from those put forward by CAFA associations.

To decide the venue for the final, each was written on a piece of paper, and all were set on fire. Organisers stated that the one remaining unburnt paper slip would be deemed to have "the blessing of Margaret", and therefore be selected. It turned out, all slips burned, and the organising committee scrambled for a new method, until it was revealed that one slip had been missed from the burning ceremony. It was thus decided that this venue would be chosen, and it was announced that the final game(s) would take place at Neorudo Cop Limy Stadium in Mertagne.

@ Neorudo Cop Limy Stadium, Mertagne
(SAL) Royal Michaeltown 1–0 Wirr Tsi (CMT)

As this was Wirr Tsi's second defeat in the final stage, Royal Michaeltown are crowned CAFA LigAnaia II Champions without the need for a second final game.

Congratulations to the winners, and thanks for waiting for me to get my ass in gear <3

Extracts from the field notes of Odette-Lynn Roberts, PhD student at Farrer University
What follows is my account from a long-standing study of the people of the Evermark, who make a hardscrabble living for themselves in a cove on a far-flung Anaian shore, and the rites they conduct which hold an uncanny likeness to association football; indeed, they recognise it as football, and play in a manner that they are convinced has not been changed in centuries...

… immediately stands out is their rich sense of tradition regarding the sport of football, which they had regarded as a lost art. My mention of the World Cup in particular caused a clamour. Evermarkers believe themselves to have won this tournament, some thousand years ago, before they were forced to flee and washed up on Anaian shores. No records exist to verify this, or even their involvement...

… equivalent to ‘clubs’ are called Prides, and each represents a given enclave within Evermark. Families will generally follow the sides religiously, following them en masse to the one stadium built at the core of Evermark, one of the few set locations in a deeply nomadic society. There is no concept of a ‘home ground’, though there is some concept of kit clashes, with the first listed side having privilege. The second generally wears either all-white or all-black ...

… different Prides are as follows:
The Ardent are admired for their fervour and flair in equal measure. Their supporters are known for vibrant displays of pyrotechnics in the stands. They wear orange and brown.
The Aspirant believe more than any other in the meritocracy of sport, and will stop at nothing to claw their way upward. They wear dark teal and gold.
The Dauntless are vicious and uncompromising warriors, respected, feared and almost universally disliked. They wear white and red.
The Diligent follow a workmanlike, almost ‘bootstraps’ spirit. They alone seem to resent the egalitarian nature of the Evermark, and favour white and black.
The Erudite value knowledge above all, learned and passionate. It was they who were most aggressive in seeking out any and all information about the outside world. They wear indigo and cyan.
The Inspired are traditionally unsuccessful in the rites, and come closest to heresy, favouring clean and defensive play without being brutal or looking to injure their opponents. They wear warm green and red.
The Outcast are the most traditionally successful Pride, almost something of a ‘wild card’ drawing in players from the margins, and cheating with a religious fervour. They wear green and black.
The Paragon represent something of an ‘upper class’ within Evermarker society, with almost a ‘noblesse oblige’ ethos. Determined to lead by example, they wear white and green.
The Pristine are the most religious of the Prides, and regard failure even more coldly than the others. Defeat results in wailing and gnashing of teeth. They wear blue and white.
The Resplendent are the closest to believing in any sort of traditional footballing ‘flair’, and believe beautiful patterns of play can be created without necessarily resulting in success on the field. Nevertheless, they have traditionally managed success. They favour cyan and blue.
The Valiant are the most ‘firm but fair’ of the Prides; while they professionally foul rigorously, they refuse, more than any other side, to appear weak. Often this leads to clashes with the Outcast, who are more willing to resort to measures such as diving. They wear red and black.
Finally, the Watchful are respected, but not liked. Their enclave lies on the fringes of Evermark, their people given the reputation of reclusive trailblazers. They favour purple and red.

… recognisably football, it is of a very distinct and archaic style. While I am no expert, it’s clear that goals are rare, an excessive physicality resulting in many attacks being broken down through what would be foul play in any conventional league. The more cynical aspects of the game are treated with something akin to religiosity, and more than once a failure to professionally foul a player on a promising attack was decried as ‘heresy’; the Result is sacred…

… is remarkable that no footballer is permitted to moonlight outside of football. As their needs are met through more communist means, they are free to pursue a ‘professional’ full-time regimen, devoting themselves full-time to their craft. Players of any enclave are free to join any Pride, yet some Prides do have a stronger history of success...

… the season itself was won by the Valiant, though the margins between most teams were very tight. It is a victory masterminded by their manager, ‘Perilous’ Sapphire, who has been rewarded with a great honour, toasted by the whole of Evermark. Friend and foe alike came together to celebrate, despite how vicious their disagreements …

… most surprising was the ritual, following their victory, of each other Pride taking one player from the Valiant for their own. This is the only permitted form of ‘transfer’ between the sides, though the Valiant are free to recruit replacements from neophytes who have never played for a team. This should not be too difficult, as almost everyone of fit age plays on the streets and in the fields; nevertheless the Valiant are expected to enter the new season a shadow of their former selves...

… upon hearing of the continuation of ‘football’ elsewhere, are now determined to compete themselves, seeing it as a sacred imperative. I have now been tasked with pleading their case to the regional authorities, informing them of their intent to supply and send out a national team to the next CAFA, and to send the Valiant and Outcast to the coming LigAnaia*.

SAVIGLEGA SEASON 6

Stadio di Coure, San Ludovico
17:56 local time
LBCT Semifinals Leg 1

This wasn’t supposed to happen. They were the third-best club in the second tier of one of the weakest league systems in Anaia. There were literally hundreds of clubs ranked above them. And yet San Ludovico are now 180 minutes from a historic finals appearance. This is already several rounds further than Savigliano clubs have ever made it in any IFCF competition. Even back before the Savigliano Portal Event, no SavigLega club has ever made it this far, with AS Villeneuve managing a single quarterfinals appearance some twenty years ago the best they’ve done.

Yet here they are. They ran through Starblaydia’s Karak Ungor Chiefs and never looked back, not losing until the group stage. AFC Westpike and Club Factoria were supposedly far better quality clubs than San Ludovico had any right to be, and yet when the dust settled it was the Heartland club on ten points and moving through. Followed by consecutive playoff wins over Hanai Breakers and Sword, it was enough to make San Ludovico fans feel invincible.

And what a place to give that gift. Because this kind of thing also wasn’t supposed to happen to San Ludovico, of all places. Maybe Komunemos Calcio, based in a Bohemian suburb of Acqui Bollente, named after some ancient monarch that had fucked off to the Levant, known for their talented young core, and who had also overcome all odds to make the Round of 16, but not them. But instead, it would be Komunemos being throttled by Krytenia’s Letson Town, and San Ludovico - the corn farmers, the failed factory workers, the island of desolation in a rising tide of Savigliano economic prosperity - putting four past a Red League club to advance.

Given the total shitstorm that’s been the past twenty years in Il Granaio, the place is at least long overdue for a win. But not even this semifinals run has been pure. Far-right parties like Piano di Dios, who count the city amongst their bases, have rallied behind San Ludovico, equating their victory to some vague concept of Savigliano exceptionalism. And the ugliness has spread to the stands at times, boiling over and casting a dark cloud on the team’s success. But despite all of that, the fans have maintained that this match isn’t Evangelista Rizzuto’s to win.

It’s Davide Monza’s - the veteran goalkeeper who saved the team against Sword at the last second, throwing himself across the face of the goal to tip Benedict Edwards’ shot over the crossbar.

It’s Nico Berardi’s - not good enough for AC Acqui Bollente as a teenager, not good enough for SavigLega as a young winger, but turned into one of the most electrifying wingbacks in the nation.

It’s Domenica Barale’s - a center-back plagued by inconsistency last season to the point of costing them promotion, still unsteady in possession, but absolutely instrumental to the team’s Round of 16 victory, pocketing Lilly Taylor over both legs and playing with previously unmatched confidence.

It’s Stefano Campana’s - the captain and leader of the team, sent off for standing up for his teammate in the group stage, reinstated just in time for an all-time performance against Sword. A club servant for seven seasons now, through thick and thin, Campana has cemented his status as a club legend for this run.

It’s Matteo Casoli’s - too short for the SavigLega, but an aggressive, charging complement to Campana who was twice man of the match in the group stage, and who had a critical goal-line clearance to salvage a draw against Han Dold and the crucial point that came with it.

It’s Aurora Cazalet’s - a diminutive but pacy fullback, the backup until the man ahead of her went down halfway through the season, the most unlikely of heroes against Sword, nipping in at the far post in the dying embers of the first leg to score what would be a quarterfinal-winning goal.

It’s Percival Rossi’s - left for dead by Saint Adelin after his Achilles tear, unable to play much of the season, but reborn as a devastating deep-lying playmaker who carved Factoria’s midfield to shreds in the group stage before returning for the semifinal.

It’s Federico Arnaudo’s - San Ludovico born and bred, the team’s do-it-all engine in central midfield, completely passed over by the top flight time and time again during the transfer window, but now Bianca Fiore’s heir apparent at the senior level.

It’s Cesar Rizier’s - not sharp enough to succeed abroad on the wing, but shining as an inside forward with Berardi on the underlap to take care of the end product.

It’s Luna Grimaldi‘s - always in the shadow of her older brother, and like Francesco on her last legs as a professional at this level, heading to the only club who believed in her after a few seasons relegated to bench duty with Pietrargenta. Now a winner in match after match, sinking AFC Westpike with a crucial late goal, netting a brace against Hanai Breakers, and drawing first blood in the second leg against Sword with a beautiful half-volley that let San Ludovico believe again.

It’s Fabrice Cazenave’s - the one Francophone who found his way into Rossolimo’s starting eleven (Cazalet being bilingual), who had all kinds of shit thrown at him from both ends of the stadium, but whose silky game, devastating presence in the box, and unlikely equalizer against Sword endeared him to even the most racist enthusiastic of fans.

So as Franco Rossolimo’s hand-picked eleven, each a hero of the run in their own right, take the field, the mood is palpable. These men and women are immortals, gods of San Ludovico, here to bring something home to the long-suffering city. And they are about to give VfL Reinbronn the

oh

(SVG) San Ludovico 1–6 VfL Reinbronn (STL) 1–4 0–2

The belief in the air is that they’ll never be this good again - that San Ludovico just witnessed something generational, caught lightning in a bottle. Manager Franco Rossolimo, the mastermind behind it all, will resign three days later. Luna Grimaldi will retire, Federico Arnaudo will finally get the transfer window interest that he desires. And it will be San Ludovico's other great hope, Evangelista Rizzuto and his new footballing party leader, to take the national stage.

Transfers pre-season 36:

Out of the college system:

Barry Theodore (goalkeeper, AIU) -> AC Pomena, Juventus
Helena Buis (right midfielder, Wawen College) -> 102d Jr.s
Tiffany Vandendries (right back, Ozcheb University) -> FC Santraginus, Squornshelan Remnant States
Sean Lehman (center back, Sapper Tech) -> Altendalur, Græntfjall

Out of the 1./:

Geomraff yCinrhadd (center midfielder, Ephesian FC) -> Glenmount Town, The Licentian Isles

Also, shoutouts to Crystal Langley and Noriko Scialfa from whatever the heck Zug um Zug are (good at defense, we guess), for joining the party in the GPL.

And...that's about it really. Not one of our louder transfer windows, but that's fine. It just means we have no excuse for procrastinating and can skip ahead to the actual season. In which, uh.

Well, last season, we had to adjust the rankings to prevent things from getting too stale. And you might think that we would have written down how we did that so that we can be consistent next time, but of course that didn't happen, we just naively figured we'd remember after a whole bunch of other hosting duties and other distracting stuff. So we just sort of winged it, and, um. It certainly wasn't boring Arlington dominance, let's put it that way.

Matchday One

Just because you top the table after the first week doesn't mean you're going to stay there. Just because you're at the bottom of the table after the first week doesn't mean you're going to stay there, either. But after the very small sample size of ninety-plus minutes in Keppal City, it's fair to say that Namiri Independent could have a long season ahead of them.

The troubles began in the twenty-fifth minute, when well-travelled Nepharan Dimitra Exarchopolous met a short cross from Rosamund Kynes and headed it in. Three minutes later, center back Syed Nagori's season got off to an unfortunate start with an own goal on an attempted backpass to Balbir Natarajan. Left-back Shekhar Reddy went down hard after a rough collision with an aging Johan Idmar around forty minutes, he rolled around for a while until the referee realized he wasn't faking and Vava Mishra substituted on. Six minutes were added in the first half, as a consequence, and Idmar made the most of them, scoring on a pass from Grigor Villanova to make it 3-0.

Independent's woes continued after the restart, with Aziz Khanna's goal disqualified after being so far offside he could probably have argued with the VAR guy in person. Lena Pulaski made it 4-0 in the 68th minute, and Idmar scored again in minute 74. Too soon to draw any conclusions? Absolutely. Will we be extrapolating wildly at the power of momentum? For sure.

Matchday Two

There are a few forces even more powerful than momentum. And one of them is "being drawn against Slogda." In some eras, that has meant frustration; in others, glee. And while some dynasties may have reversals of fortune, Slogda are still in their "not very good" phase, much to Keppal's delight.

Kynes got things started with a long blast in minute 16. Seven minutes later, Idmar almost had an opening, but unselfishly laid off for the younger and pacier Pulaski. His generosity would be repaid in minute 35, with a darting pass from Exarchopolous managing to evade Artyom Ciocan and find Idmar's cleats.

The second half would continue in the same vein, with Villanova tapping in a Carly Hayes-Clevel free kick after an Oskar Piotrowski foul on Pulaski. Sandra Dukach got an early reprieve from the proceedings after her second yellow, Idmar scored the penalty, and completed a hat trick with four minutes to go. Do you think the national team wants him back?

...Actually never mind, they've got Esther Axelrod-Conway and she does even sillier things. But anyway, Keppal are enjoying their start.

Matchday Three

Keppal's momentum lasts about eighteen more minutes. That's how long it takes for a Julio McBailey sprint to turn into the opening goal for Twineur. Six minutes after halftime, a long Eric Motley-Kashone pass finds Kirsten Jackson open, and she makes it 2-0 for the visiting Bugs. Hayes-Clevel mustered a late consolation goal for the visitors, who weren't outclassed, but merely normal instead of superlative.

This means that the only team with three wins from three is...Namiri Forest, who've been taking their preferred minimalist approach with a 1-0 over Twineur on Matchday One, and another 1-0 over FTC United today. (In between was a 2-1 clash against Canbix, but that still got the job done.) Today, it was Ganesh Pandey who got on the scoreboard, off an asist from Sakina Keshavan-Kaur.

Matchday Four

Keppal return to form, in the Namiri Forest sense of form, with a clinical penalty from Idmar enough to put aside their bitter-central neighbors in Canbix. (We understand that the historical/cultural reasons that this center is "bitter" really haven't been a political issue for decades if not...more decades, depending on which calendar you're using, but we don't really have one-city "derbies" so this is the catchy way to refer to "the Canbix-Keppal City regional rivalry.) Forest also continued their Namiri Forest display of form, with Farrokh Sokhi's looping left-footed shot overcoming Eintracht Trink.

The real story of the day was none of these, and in fact, not a player at all. Rather, Arlington City's brace in the second half meant they overcame an early Gordon Blum goal down in Bassabook, which means that wildly successful manager Laura Petrell can go out on a high. It's not clear whether she's facing health issues, wants to spend more time working on her song parodies, or is being gently nudged by the club so they can have a plausible explanation for their "rebuilding phase," but either way, Arlington won't be the same without her. Hail and farewell, noble seabird.

Matchday Five

If you want to see some defensive action...well, you're going to have to be more specific, because FTC United's 3-1 victory away in Trink was the only game where both teams got on the scoreboard. But you wanted a taut, gripping, defensively strong display between the early contenders, Ayathen Arena was the place to be. And Namiri Forest and Keppal City delivered.

Forest are, of course, a notoriously defensive side, which means they don't need to rely on individual heroics at back (although they can appreciate them anyway). Cosmos are merely a notably defensive side, which means that Ketevan Igreli can occasionally get to shine in goal--considering that she's behind Fedya Troy-Vee and Helen Pimbura on the national-team depth charts, she might not get a chance to crack the starting XI, but Keppal City aren't complaining that they get to see her every week. And while Forest weren't exactly peppering her with shots, she had to be quick to shut down Pandey and Sokhi through the first half.

When Forest did break through, it was an appropriately collective affair. After a crisp Kausalya Vizirani tackle, Nungshi Lodha slowly dribbled forward to set up Kedarnath Indori. Indori held off for Talat Ilango, who did a quick one-two with Pandey, resulting in Ilango maintaining possession and beating Igreli in minute 65. After that, it was a question of maintaining defensive control, which Vizirani was only too happy to contribute to.

They weren't the only Namiri side to get a win on the road today; Independent got their first point of the season with Aziz Khanna scoring the only goal during Cameron Raleigh's interim tenure with Arlington.

Matchday Six

It wouldn't be journalistically responsible to cherry-pick a few points to form a trend line and construct our narrative out of that, so obviously that's exactly what we're going to do (again). FTC United are...maybe decent? After being the only team to score three last week, they won pretty convincingly this week, albeit against their medicore fellows in unity. The east-side match saw Wiwat Petchrung take the lead after a quarter-hour, and Avril Ferel-Bonneau get credit for a short tap-in after a booming if erratic Becca Yontararak shot. A Hilde Clages set piece made it 3-0 in the 70th, after a Savannah Kurge foul on Surojana Vantana. (Surojana Vantana is an FTC United midfielder who everyone hates, not because she's a diver or anything, but because autocorrect keeps deciding that she's actually Savojarna/Siovanija and Teusland/Sargossa/Sarzonia/those guys over there.)

Matchday Seven

FTC United won again, against Keppal, who are decent, which clearly means this whole narrative-building thing is great and we should keep it up. Um, once again it was Avril Ferel-Bonneau getting her name on the scoreboard, and once again she wasn't really the one who was the real star; that would be Pia Leykauf, who enterprisingly danced back and forth to keep an irritated Idmar offsides any time it looked like Keppal were developing an attack. To be fair, he is getting old, but he also had that disappointing World Cup 88 campaign where it looked like he was thinking "I'm the only one who plays forward so really, I get to go wherever."

Which leads into the question of how, exactly, Namiri Forest continue to be good. In part, they don't have a true "lone striker" in their current incarnation, at least not one that gets an implausible percentage of goals. Although perhaps they are following the national team in risking over-correction. Pandey seems to be as threatening a finisher as any, and it was his shot off the crossbar that evaded the otherwise-stalwart Troy-Vee of 102d and kept Namiri Forest top.

That Ephesian FC shut out Excelsior Slogda is not much of a surprise. Ephesian are decent, Slogda are weak and not much of a goalscoring side even on a good day. What was mildly surprising is that they did it in Namirite style, with Quinten Fryx' goal in minute 36 all Ephesian needed. Though clearly not all they wanted, as they continued to push forward on attack, and even defender Jesse McWhorter got his head to a shot that went far wide for a goal kick. Ephesian now have 5.5 points, which makes them...second behind Forest. We'll have to wait till Matchday Ten to see the ultimate stylistic clash play out.

Matchday Eight

All aboard the FTC United bandwagon! Or rather, the "figure eight" train that loops around through the FTC's two downtowns. It stopped on the west side today, as the Oxen hosted a Bassabook team looking for their first win of the season. And they left the FTC, uh, still looking for their first win.

Yontararak would get things started for the visitors in the seventeenth minute, off a pass from Clages. Ten minutes later, Wisuta Kuna-Bulnoi's chip shot made it 2-0. A few restless Bassabook fans decided to forget about football and start singing chants about how at least on the west side people speak proper Descriptive English, and the west siders ought to hold the line and shut up their Algebraic neighbors, which was really kind of rude because again, like the bitter center, this hasn't exactly been an issue for a while. But you don't want to question whether a Bassabook fan is singing, so best just to leave it at that.

Despite, or perhaps because of, this nonstandard support, the Old Boys came roaring back in the second half. Gordon Blum scored three minutes after the restart. Nine minutes later, a clumsy foul from the justly-maligned Vantana on the Kelssekian defender Ryan Dumont gave James Fauxbourdon a set piece. It found Rafael Ashadha, who scored to tie things up for the visitors. But Petchrung header in minute 82 meant the hosts would come away with a win, and Bassabook would have to be satisfied with their linguistic hot takes. Adding insult to...insult, I guess, no one got injured, 102d were busy winning in Trink by the same margin, which ties them with Ephesian for second. Forest continue unabated; Indori's 11th-minute goal would have been plenty, but Pandey had to make his case for goalscoring drama in the second minute of second half added time. (His case will probably be called out by a sternly-worded editorial in the Guariday Guardian, because that's just how they are.)

Matchday Nine

So you probably want to hear if FTC United kept up their win streak, and we are happy to report that they did, with Ettore Biglino tapping in a long pass from Leykauf against a lackluster Spenson Suburbia.

After last week's ominous summary, you may also want to know whether Bassabook Old Boys managed a win, and we can also report that they did, at home against an even lackluster-er Namiri Independent. Spenson and Independent are the two "neutral" sides, strategically speaking, but Spenson have seemed to be very defensive so far while Independent are conceding left and right. Well, in this case, mostly left, since it was only the left foot of Gordon Blum that scored this time, but the point stands.

But even that didn't get attention for going against momentum. That honor belonged to Namiri Forest, who only...dropped points for the first time all season, and couldn't have done it in more Namirite style, an extremely tedious scoreless draw. Up in Arlington, which by the standards of Cameron Raleigh's extremely tepid time at the helm probably qualifies as a result for them. Vizirani was the leader at the back for Forest, while Jenna Kowalski got her head to a couple errant shots on Arlington's part but wasn't particularly outstanding.

Matchday Ten

With Namiri Forest proving themselves to be a not-quite-immovable force, the next test they faced was Ephesian FC. Forest don't exactly consider this a rivalry--the club they think of as a nemesis because their all-out offense is the starkest possible contrast to Forest's all-out defense is actually Deportivo Peralta. They actually play a legal formation, so they do have that going for them, but suffice it to say this rivalry is not likely to be renewed any time soon. So as much as Forest may consider Ephesian mediocre rules-benders, this is the closest thing we have to a takil versus karela showdown.

Anyway, Ephesian promptly went and showed what they thought of momentum by scoring twice in the first ten minutes, with the indefatigable Jaclyn Burkhart assisting Lukas Helsen-Roan, and then Jacques Nelson-Boque skirting the crossbar. Fryx would add on shortly before the halftime whistle. Around the hour mark, however, McWhorter got a yellow card for a bad foul on Ilango. For some unfathomable reason he decided to remonstrate severely, and the ref had no choice but to point to the spot. Keshavan-Kaur did not think it beneath her to score the penalty, so it finished 3-1 to Ephesian.

As for Arlington, how would they follow up such a competent, if unglamorous performance? How about a free-wheeling 3-3 scoreline in Trink...in the first 30 minutes? Meldi'ita Mungwaii, who is still around and still awesome despite age and the mediocrity of his teammates, got things started in the seventh minute, only for Shinji Hoshino to equalize two minutes later. Rutger Jenkins-Palin put the hosts ahead in minute 13, and in minute 17, Piet Wilkes gave them the lead. Only for Doro Aemon-Shay to score off the restart. Felicity Ephatha met a Junia McCue free kick in minute 25, and there we were. Who needs Ephesian for offense?

The next half-hour was somewhat less eventful, but in minute 56, Mungwaii hauled Arlington back into the lead again. Shortly after the hour mark, Rufus Lyngblom-Hutch added on, and Milo Tien made it 6-3 in minute 71. The extra goals did prove necessary, as Hanna Suzuki scored seven minutes later, and Uwe Quade tried to pull Trink back into the mix two minutes into stoppage time. Even without Sydney Stefred, however, Arlington were able to hang on and secure the full point.

Matchday Eleven:

102d Jr.s defeat FTC United, a result which, in combination with Cham's loss against Spenson, moves 102d into second outright. (They're still a point and a half shy of Forest, who were held to a scoreless draw by Sporting Esper.) Valerie Waugh scored a brace for 102d, with Mariano Llosa also scoring off a pass from Priyanka Harish. Troy-Vee looked less than impressive in goal, however; neither Biglino nor Vantana are exactly offensive threats, and both made it look easy beating him today. (I mean, they're not now. Who knows what things will look like the next time we need to throw a roster together? And we kind of followed them around for a few weeks but we're bored with that, let's find another weird narrative to follow now.)

Spenson being involved in a seven-goal game shouldn't be that surprising, particularly not against Cham; what is surprising is that those seven goals represent more than a third of the offense in games involving them, and it's matchday eleven. Lucinda Butler-Herbert started things off for visitors Spenson around the quarter-hour mark, but Kayla Haugen's equalizer meant it was 1-1 at halftime. After the break, Alicia Sakura-Willow got on the highlight reel with a brace, scoring once with her left foot and once with her right in quick succession. There would be no hat trick nor header, though, as the Cabbas slowly pulled themselves back into contention; Nancy Puyo-Sachar and Peter Rudovich scoring to equalize. The winner came from an 89th minute Leah Strund set piece--once billed as the next Lucas Kukiseso, she hasn't exactly lived up to the hype, but she provided enough fireworks to give Spenson the point. If you'd told them they'd be ahead of Arlington on goal difference at this point in the season they'd probably have taken it...

Matchday Twelve:

With 102d and Cham in second and third respectively, the Cabbas' visit to Simplex 3 was one to watch. 102d took an early lead through Harish, causing Cham to become more aggressive in pursuit of an equalizer. But while Haugen and Puyo-Sachar are more than a match for anyone 102d can boast in midfield, what transpired was not a comeback nor even individual brilliance from Troy-Vee, but rather, a cohesive defensive showing from the Wiz Kids (do we still call them that?) Fullbacks Artem Kontiak and Kristin Lupin-Hauss linked up well in thwarting the visitors' attacks, and Iosif Chaika of the Squornshelous Remnant Empire Thing made some good clearances at left back.

As for Namiri Forest, after eight wins from eight, they are now winless in their last four. Today's draw comes courtesy of a blown lead against Rovers United. Farrokh Sokhi scored the opener around twenty minutes in, but Paavo Loris set up Savannah Kurge to tie in minute 67.

Matchday Thirteen:

Another day, another...scoreless draw for Namiri Forest, who are still in first place, although that may say more about the mediocrity of everyone else than their own prowess. This time it was Bassabook who were the inflicters, although their fans did come up with a pretty catchy number about how hyper-identitarian tribalism is an insufficient political scheme for determining effective policy in whichever century this is.

One thing that has been fairly consistent despite the upsets this season is that Excelsior Slogda are rubbish, and that meant the Twineur Bugs had an opportunity to surge into second by visiting Doymals Stadium. This they did, thanks to a header from the lofty Molly Nestor. But this also required 102d to be defeated; would you believe a good old-fashioned "Arlington hat trick" from three different people each playing kinda-sorta-up front? Mungwaii, Aemon-Shay, and Lyngblom-Hutch all scored in a comprehensive win for Raleigh's kids, even if it wasn't as exciting as the 6-5 against Trink.

Matchday Fourteen:

Still topping the table below a shifting pack, Namiri Forest return home to take on their district rivals in Independent. Would they return to winning ways to make a decisive mark on the standings as we approach the halfway point? Would an Independent side still seeking their second win unleash their frustration against their elder siblings? Would anybody score a goal?

It's Forest. The answer is "no."

On the other hand, the teams below them had plenty of opportunities to jockey for position, especially because Ephesian FC were involved. 102d Jr.s jumped out to a quick-ish start against the capital side, with Waugh and Llosa's goals making it 2-0 at halftime. Before the hour was up, Waugh had made it 3-0 and the game looked secure. Enter Paulina Henrico, who scored in minute 78, then quickly assisted Marianne Ezekiel to make it 3-2. 102d attempted to fall back on defense, but weren't super effective at that, in the sense that Jason McEwan scored two minutes later to add onto their lead. Which proved necessary, because Fryx converted a McWhorter pass to make it a 4-3 final.

So 102d pull into second, but that also involved Twineur failing to win, and they were stymied by occasional media darlings FTC United. Ferel-Bonneau provided the only goal in the east-side match. Which means that the Bugs are third, one goal ahead of...those very Oxen. Parity, we can haz it. Maybe a bit too much of it.

Matchday Fifteen:

With the halfway point approaching, journalists yearned for some clarity to be provided to have something to latch onto in building narratives. Fortunately, Namiri Forest (first place) were visiting Slogda (last). Ilango's goal didn't provide much separation, but separation it was, and we can say with high confidence that of the two most defensive sides in the league, one is very good and the other is very bad.

102d also did their part in moving away from the chasing pack, with a 4-1 win in Hope City. Waugh wasted no time getting started, scoring a chip shot three minutes in. McEwan and Helena Buis would score in the ensuing half-hour, before Nora Kent-Maner finally put Sporting Esper on the board. After halftime, Buis assisted Sonja Reuel-Whail to restore 102d's goal difference. Which they might wind up needing, because, well...

Ephesian love to score goals! Trebuchet Cham win the cup! Arlington City are second and therefore will be our VCI applicants if Cham finish in the top five and they don't! Given their respective forms so far, this is pretty likely!

The people responsible for providing the second half of coverage have been sacked. We don't sack our managers. It's impolite to get entitled and expect success. Even if you're Laura Petrell. Especially if you're Laura Petrell! We just sack our editors.

The season has been completed in an entirely different style at great expense and at the last minute.

Forest keep rivals from scoring!
They led the whole way, really boring!
Sharag and Guariday are near
But only on the map, that's clear.
Independent stink up joints,
Finish on a mere eighth points.
Buis and Troy-Vee are first-rate!
But their teammates? Not so great.
102d can't keep up the pace,
They finish in seventh place.
The FTC? Still dis-united
But their fans should be delighted
That they got to the top half
The notion almost made us laugh!
Arlington City, what's the deal?
The dynasty's collapse is real.
Cameron Raleigh inherits
Youngsters lacking current merits.
Will they be an underdog
Or return to a long slog?
Midfielder Aimee Ginoud-Sachs
Media attention lacks,
But Twineur rise into contention
Which certainly deserves attention!
Manager Dale Hartford-Phelps
Has done a lot with his young whelps.
But who chased the Forest down
Delighting fans in every town?
Whose tragedies lie so far past
That they're competing, at long last
Not with a narrative to tell,
Just playing football very well?
Quincy Dulk-Fough, Rowan Singh,
Fiona Hubbard's names will ring
From east to west, across the land,
In every stadium's home stand!
Rovers United, runners-up!
Now off to the Champions' Cup!
...you mean, to the Champions' League?
These name changes cause us fatigue.
Especially when we need a rhyme
As we approach deadline crunch time--

(Those responsible for sacking the editors who have just been sacked, have been sacked.)

IFCF Champions' League: The Battleground, Raynor City (78,000)

Located in the heart of the Eternal Empire's capital, The Battleground is a stadium with a bountiful history, having hosted World Cup Finals, numerous club Finals, and is home to the most successful team in Valanora's history in Raynor City United. It is the largest stadium in the nation and was constructed just over a century ago when the Empire first broached the idea of hosting international events inside its borders.
