FIFTIETH WORLD CUP FINAL
Winner 13 v Winner 14 - The Imperial Hippodrome, Imperial City

IMPERIAL STADIA

The Holy Empire will be using the following venues during the World Cup Finals:
[there aren't any pictures because my imagination exceeds my ability with Photoshop]

THE IMPERIAL HIPPODROME (The Imperial City): The venue for the WC2 final, the WC34 opening ceremony (and - sort of - the WC34 final; you had to be there), and the overwhelming majority of Holy Empire home matches is one of the most legendary stadia in the history of the World Cup. Platinum and gold-covered bejewelled domes rise above the external purple stone walls of an extraordinary monument to sport that lies adjacent to the even more magnificent Imperial Palace. Up until the final, it will seat 150,000. The laws of Euclidean geometry will be tampered with for the final, for which it will seat a full 300,000 despite not seeming any larger than it did for the earlier rounds. This is the Dreamed Realm, after all.

THE METEORA (St. Mary's City): The only other stadium to have been in use since WC2, the Meteora is almost as famous as the Hippodrome. St. Mary's City lies at the base of the great cliffs that separate the Coastal Plain from the Chaco; rising hundreds of metres above the city, seeming to hang out from the face of the rock, supported by an extraordinary series of buttresses and pillars, is the Meteora Stadium. Only accessible via 50 huge glass elevators and - for the extremely fit and dangerously brave - a narrow cliff-face path wide enough for two humans (or one ursine). It seats 60,000.

STADIUM TZIMISCES (Philadelphia): Named after the city's most famous sporting hero - who just happens to be the most famous sporting hero the Holy Empire has ever produced - Stadium Tzimisces was first used in WC34, though it has hosted the occasional qualifier since. The climate of the Chaco is famously inhospitable, with dry and dusty heat in the dry season, and wet and humid heat in the wet season. Fortunately, this ultra-modern (to mundies) domed 60,000 seat venue is fully air-conditioned. It's also a rare example of plain 'modernist' stadium architecture in a nation typically known for more florid touches.

BORISOGLEBSKY MONASTIC STADIUM (Borisoglebsky Monastery, the Archregimancy): Lest we forget that the Archregimancy is an autonomous province of the Holy Empire, the monks have been prevailed upon to let the tournament take place in one of their more famous stadia. The 45,000 seat all-wooden Borisoglebsky stadium lies in a sub-Arctic region, though the monks are promising Spring-like weather. They'll even allow women in for the World Cup - provided they go directly to the stadium, never leave the stadium, and then go straight back to the Holy Empire again.

The following venues, all tested in the Crosshill Cup, are not located in any Imperial city. In fact, no one's quite sure precisely where in the Holy Empire they might be located at any one time. Visiting fans are assured, however, that they'll always be able to get to the ground precisely 30 minutes before kickoff, no matter where in the Empire they're staying. They each seat 55,000.

THE STADIUM OF FIRE: The entire exterior fabric of this stadium appear to be made of cold-burning flames, which rise high into the sky, also serving to illuminate night matches at this dramatic venue. The flames may only be some sort of oneirology illusion (this is open to debate), but they are certainly impressive.

THE STADIUM OF WATER: Located on a platform far out to sea, and reached by either helicopter or ferry, cascades of water flow over the exterior walls of this venue. On the inside, the terraced seating appears to be made of glass, under which various non-mammalian sea creatures - including sharks - can be clearly seen.

THE STADIUM OF AIR: Possibly the most dramatic venue in World Cup history, the Stadium of Air appears to float unsupported a full kilometer above the surface of the ground, tethered some 500 metres away from the cliff face separating the Chaco from the coastal plain by a ten covered walkways - the only available access to the stadium. The walls and seats seem to be made of solid cloudstuff. A plentiful supply of spare balls is at hand, because this is one venue where kicking the ball out of the stadium means the ball is lost forever.

THE STADIUM OF EARTH: Entirely built into a deep chasm on the coastal plain, the Stadium of Earth is essentially invisible from the ground until supporters are mere metres away from the venue. The interior walls and seating are made from adobe.

"Tommi, when do we leave?"

"Now, final flight call, and try to keep a low profile to bad news. We want to give Krytenia a good impression, and we can qualify. All we need is to play like we did in the last Cup of Harmony, paticularly you, Janni!"

"Thanks, boss!"

"Alright, lets go!"

One question rests on everyones mind this time of year, Will we qualify? And for yet another season the Purple Knights shall begin in the coming weeks. One other question resides, will Zeke still be head coach if they do not? Sure he has led them to all three of their qualifications, but many fans are getting tired, and though he has done so much for the country as a whole, many wonder if his days are numbered. The team will look to qualify for the fourth time in their history in the coming season and hopefully catch up to their friendly rivals in Kosovoe who have suddenly taken charge in recent years over their overlords. The Knights haven't made it in a while, but 50 could very well be the teams lucky number, and it would add a second player to the World Cup Hall of Fame, Brian Ying Uing will try his hardest to push the team, as most likely he will be the person who gets the spot. Though another question seems to be arising, when will Ying Uing retire, Sure he has been in top form over in Daehnajeiguk this season, but stranger thigns have happened.

With only days until the World Cup draw is announced the Taeshan Soccer Federation has announced its newest policy on the team after discussions with the hosting nations of the coming tournament, Krytenia and the Holy Empire. Due to a some interesting circumstances the Federation has decided to bench the team during all of the off weeks and will not be playing any friendlies in the coming season. The team will be focusing on only qualification this year and will not be making any side tracks out of the nation that could eventually cause problems on the team. The coaching staff and the management have all agreed that though they prefer to give the boys some fun during the season, they have failed in recent years and it is time to concentrate on the real prize, instead of going after the fluff.

Qazox has never been ranked higher (SIxth), and after back-to-back quarterfinal appearances, the big question is: Can they finally break through into the semifinals and potentially the final itself?

Since 200 years ago Arridia founded the World Cup, Qazoxian newspapers will present historical events from 200 years ago in their cities/regions. It is hoped that this historical retropective will give the nations competing at the 50th World Cup a bit of a insight into Qazox through the history of the nation, a history not many know.

The other big story is the retirements of mnay of the players who have brought Qazox up to these heights. Ramon Palin, Nathaniel McChristian, Reginald Gillispie, Deana Kuhlman, Lucile Hulin and the suprising early retirement of Mike Chalmers; there are 6 new starters, but they do have experienced players replacing them.

So at this historic World Cup, history will be revisited, history will be made and maybe, just maybe, Qazox can pull off a historic win and claim a World Cup title.

"I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space,
Rayless, and pathless, and the icy earth
Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air;
Morn came and went and came, and brought no day,
And men forgot their passions in the dread
Of this their desolation; and all hearts
Were chill'd into a selfish prayer for light"

From "Darkness", by Lord Byron, 1816

"This has to be it, pull it back."

The holographic display, projecting a wealth of strings, co-ordinates, time-frames and 3D images flickered wildly as the technical assistant manipulated the controls under the senior's direction, themselves only projections of light in the air.

"What year is registered in the Exif data?" The senior tech was almost bursting with excitement, his eyes too fixed upon the pix fragment, surrounded by other graphics that gave an eerie sky-blue glow to the darkened, cramped laboratory.

"It is," the assistant said, checking and re-checking his data, "from 2093."

"What?" The senior's hairless head snapped around to the side, glaring intently at his assistant. "You must be mistaken, look again."

"No, it's definitely 2093," the assistant confirmed, "the other entries above and below have 2093 as the date of termination. Look there, 'Derea: 2015-2093'."

"That makes no sense," the senior said, perfectly calm as he explained the inconsistency, "ten ninety-three I can picture - that'd be ludicrous enough, mind - but twenty? No, there has to be something wrong. That puts every single one of our estimates off by twenty years. This one source can't throw lifetimes of work out of the window."

"I'm only telling you what it says."

"Then it must be wrong!"

"Perhaps," the assistant mused with a wry half-smile, "the Athlete has outpaced us and the Shadow has edited the data."

"Do not presume to preach your evangelism here, technician," the senior said, "you are already aware that you are here as my assistant, my counterpoint, because of your religious leanings, not because I wish to be saved."

"The Father's ways are hidden from all our eyes."

"I require no lessons on the aspects of your God, technician," the senior had regained his composure. "by taking away these past millennia of dogma, we will find the truth of your saviour, your God-Imperator."

"And then what," the assistant led the line of thinking on, "you will show the proof to the Arch-Ecclesiarch, who will declare the fervent views of himself and untold hundreds of millions null and void, then we all go home?"

"The truth will unify the human race," the senior said confidently.

"As you say," the assistant nodded, and they began again.

Last Citizen of The Incorporated States of The Kazoo Peoples stumbles out of Time Barcalounger, Announces Entry Into World Cup 50
First thought to be escaped mental patient, time traveler intends to re-establish storied nation

KAZOO CITY - The ruins of the once-thriving metropolis shuddered as a gigantic Barcalounger landed with a thud in the middle of the town square. Or at least, that's what time traveler Martin Jefferson III told our news service earlier today.

"While I don't know how exactly my nation ceased to exist, I knew that I had to use my Time Barcalounger to save it. When I left, there were approximately 1.5 billion people thriving, but now..." He emitted a low whistle. "I gotta lotta repopulatin' to do."

The announcement to join the oft-anticipated fiftieth World Cup shortly after arriving was met with silence, considering that there were no citizens to greet him upon his arrival.

"I kinda thought that I would be welcomed with a parade or something. I mailed a letter to the National Assembly telling them to prepare a parade for this day, I guess they never got that letter. Oh, no! The day I left was the day the postal rates went up one Kazoot [1/100th of a Kazoo Dollar, the national currency] and I don't know if I put enough postage on it."

A quick trip to Mr. Jefferson's former home unveiled a shocking discovery: inside his mailbox was a still-sealed envelope addressed to the National Assembly, but with a big "RETURN TO SENDER" stamped on it, thus confirming Marty's fears.

"In this new nation I'm founding, there isn't going to be postage rate increases. In fact, there won't be postage at all! Free postal service for everyone!" He then gave himself a pat on the back for such a fantastic idea, as there were no other citizens to congratulate him.

Marty plans on using his Time Barcalounger to pilfer people from both past and future to repopulate the state, which he has dubbed "The New Union of the Kazoo Peoples."

"Maybe I'll snag some players from our teams that entered the World Cup in previous years. I know we entered World Cups 26 through 29, but for the life of me, I can't seem to remember those players' names. Maybe they have been etched on the stadiums we built for the fifteenth Baptism of Fire when we co-hosted with Legalese, right before World Cup 28. On the other hand, maybe we should start fresh. I'll first find all the people that had time machines from our great nation, then we'll repopulate the country, then we'll go back... to the future!"

"Excuse me, Martin. Why the dramatic pause?"

"Call me Marty. As for the pause, I don't know, it's something I must have picked up from my mentor and good friend, Dr. Brown. Anyways, we'll bring back the best talent we had or will have. I have a feeling that it's going to be a good one. That is, if I can remember where I put my Time Barcalounger."

(Most of this is a repost from the BoF thread. Information on Ariddian cities is added here from the wiki.)

FOOTBALL
Ariddia? Oh, them!
World Cup founders prepare for ‘one off’ return

Almost two hundred years ago, a young man called Terry Singh was the star player of an Ariddian national football team playing on home ground, during the inaugural edition of the World Cup. The first ever Rouge-et-Noirs crashed out in the second round, and even great legend Singh gradually faded from the memories of all except enthusiasts of great football history. Today, his grave is maintained in a small town in the outer suburbs of Cité-Belle, on the south-east coast of Ariddia’s main island.

For decades, victory eluded the Cup founders. Until the glory years, when Hanifah Kyaw captained the Rouge-et-Noirs to win the final in World Cup 32 – defeating Jeruselem by two goals to one. It was the time of the dream team, which captured the imaginations of a generation. The Ariddians won again in World Cup 34 (which they co-hosted with the Holy Empire), reached the final in World Cup 35, and won World Cup 36, defeating their close Errinundrian friends in extra time in the final. Ariddia topped the world; names such as Cassie Lee, Ke Sho and Xavier Xu were famous everywhere. After the apotheosis, many of the star players retired. The new generation struggled to build up a momentum which seemed to have run its course. In World Cup 37, the Rouge-et-Noirs were thrashed by Demot in the second round – one of the surprises of the competition. Four years later, they seemed fragile in the group stages. After pounding Northern Bettia 6-0 in the second round, they fell to Tynelia (1-2). Having made the final three times in a row, the ‘Red and Blacks’ were finding the semis slipping out of reach. It was the quarter-finals again in World Cup 39, which turned out to be the team’s last appearance in the international football event.

The People’s Democratic Social Republic of Ariddia –as it was then– had announced a recasting of its funding priorities. Functioning on a moneyless economy, the country had to make do with an exceedingly tight budget. Public consultations revealed that citizens approved –with understandable reluctance– plans to cut down on costly events such as participation in world sports tournaments, for an indefinite period. Ariddia retreated into itself. Foreign tourists still flocked to the country’s many attractions, spending much-wanted cash, but Ariddians were rarely seen abroad. The nation’s socialist dream was revealing one of its most glaring imperfections.

Yet it was a time of reform. Impulsed by Second Secretary Turei Lauru, the State shed many of its national institutions, embarking on what was to be the final stage towards communism. The national government dwindled, delegating its functions to local communes, which obtained increased autonomy – and, eventually, quasi-independence. Local councils, functioning on the basis of direct democracy, were empowered to repeal national legislation on their territory, and draft their own, in accordance with the bare essentials of the Constitution. Ten years ago –while the world was watching the final stages of World Cup 47–, the People’s Democratic Social Republic became the Autonomous Communes of Ariddia. The Ariddian Communist Party dissolved itself, proclaiming that it had achieved its goal. Outgoing leader Jean-Edouard Smithe described the country as a “no-party democracy”, a true “communist society”. Far from the eyes of sports fans, Ariddia had achieved a milestone in its development.

Integration talk with West Ariddia, meanwhile, was not progressing. A few weeks ago, West Ariddia’s Second Secretary, Miguel Case of the Communist Party, was re-elected to lead the country with a narrow victory, and thrown into a restrictive coalition with the Social-Democratic Centrist Party. The latter was given the Finance Ministry, and the ability to rein in the government’s left-wing policies. Shifting towards a moderate form of socialism, West Ariddia seems far removed from the prospect of meaningful unification with the Autonomous Communes. For all intents and purposes, the states of the de jure ‘Federation of the Ariddian Isles’ remain separate countries.

The team

It is in this context that the Ariddians are preparing for their “one off” comeback to the world football stage.

The Ariddian football team will represent the Autonomous Communes, and not the Federation – although it does, symbolically, include one West Ariddian player. Mindful of its lack of exposure to world competitions, the Ueal Cso'Kio Ahit'ya (Ariddian Football Association) has put together a team of under-21s – describing them optimistically as “bright stars of the future”. Unknown to an international audience, they travelled to Cafundéu for the Baptism of Fire – and took the competition by storm, sometimes scoring four or five goals a match and emerging from the group stages with the best overall record. Ariddians at home were thrilled; the youngsters were performing beyond all expectations. Now they move on to the World Cup.

Here are their names.

Starting eleven:
GK: Patrick Michelet (1)
DEF: miliencu (5) ; Janey Lent (16) ; John McHughes (15)
MID: Fabien Levant (10; capt) ; Joy Ngodzo (13) ; Ou Lo (4) ; Rick Eastton (19)
FWD: Shimmi Woh (2) ; Lea Shaw (11) ; Kossi Touré (7)

Bench:
GK: Mathilda El (12) ; Aurélien Dor (24)
DEF: James Carver (22) ; Fernand Campos (3) ; Sandy Lae (18) ; U E (21)
MID: Hamad al-Rahib (8) ; Faridah al-Rahib (9) ; Uli Rains (14) ; Fabrice Sougou (20)
FWD: Luc Marin (17) ; Sophie Bright (23) ; Nastasya Konysbaev (6)

Aged between 15 and 20, the players are, for the most part, students, playing for school teams, university teams or youth clubs. Among them, a few have attracted attention.

Patrick Michelet (aged 17) has an important role to play. Traditionnally focused on attack, Ariddian teams have, on occasion, suffered from a shaky defence (although the team seen at the BoF suffered no such weakness). This has made the goalkeeper crucial as the final line of defence. Michelet, from a smallish rural town, has kept out of the way of the media so far. Tall and thin, with longish brown hair and a thin moustache, he appears shy, a little nervous – but has good reflexes, demonstrated when he saved three consecutive penalty kicks during the quarter-finals shoot-out at the BoF.

Shimmi Woh (aged 18) is the team’s “borrowed” West Ariddian. She’s in the final months of her secondary school studies, and admits she’s uncertain about her future; a good performance with the Rouge-et-Noirs might boost her career as a professional football player. Domestically, she plays for the Eshlin Strikers in her home state, and has made a name for herself as a skiller attacker. An urban-born Wymgani (Indigenous Ariddian), she has light brown skin, lush dark hair and a keen fashion sense. As a West Ariddian, she is also the only member of the team to be paid as a footballer. She will be the tip of the Rouge-et-Noirs’ once famed thrust.

miliencu (aged 20) is an apprentice water analyst. He was born in Errinundera, and hence spells his name without a capital letter. His wife, vanessa, is the daughter of elenalee, daughter of the legendary former Ariddian goalkeeper Cassie Lee. He is the only player with a family link to one of the “ancient greats”. Fairly sun-tanned, with dark hair and dark blue eyes, he has proved a solid enough defender to be slotted among the starting eleven.

Fabien Levant (aged 18) is the team captain. Only 1m73 tall, with short, dark blond hair, he has been described as quick-thinking and charismatic, thoughtful, modest but rarely hesitant - a good leader.

Aurélien Dor (aged 16) has attracted some interest too. At 2m08 in height, he is by far the tallest player. He is also deaf (but not mute). Unlike Michelet, he is sociable and outgoing. He, Michelet and El are considered to be their country’s top youth goalkeepers; they’re certainly up against their greatest challenge to date.

If the players were, until recently, unknowns, their coach is famous in his own right. José “Zé” Sho, of Cafundéu, now aged 57, is the son of former Rouge-et-Noirs star Ke Sho. Following in his father’s footsteps, he played for Atlético Jutense, then for Cafundéu’s national football team, from World Cups 41 to 44 included, as a defensive midfielder. Like his father, too, he went on to be a coach, and has now picked up the challenge of moulding a team of youngsters from his father’s homeland into a squad capable of competing among the world’s best.

Preparing to host home games

Playing the qualifying stages of the World Cup means hosting teams from around the world. In concertation with communes, the Ariddian Football Association has set about refurbishing stadia to bring them up to international standards.

Ariddia’s home matches will be played in Stade National Rêvane-Sud, Wavecrest City Stadium, Haven-Port-Nouveau Stadium, Darras Olympic Stadium (in the vicinity of Rêvane) and ubhashinim Ahwa'u Stadium.

Information on the host cities:
Rêvane, Ariddia’s capital, is located on the river O'o, far inland on the nation's largest island (Ocea). Rêvane is notable for being a compact, heavily populated city, yet clean and very ecologically-minded. Like many Ariddian towns, it is surrounded by forests, and expanded upwards into sky-scrapers, rather than outwards into suburbs which would have damaged the surrounding natural setting.
Visitors to Rêvane may enjoy its pleasant parks and restaurants, and the friendliness of residents well used to greeting tourists. It is, naturally enough, in the capital that many famous attractions may be found. This includes national monuments such as Progress Tower and Harmonia, as well as the National History Museum and the Museum of Consumerism. The bustling "heart" of the city may well be the Avenue Weyle'e, with its shops, cinemas, theatres, libraries, restaurants, and night-clubs to keep the rhythm beating after sunset.

Wavecrest is located on the southern coast of the island of Wueliw, in the south-east of the Ariddian island group, some distance from the mainland. Built on the shore of the Pacific Ocean, it has several notable beaches, and also attracts tourists looking for boat rides, or wishing to dive for a closer look at marine fauna and flora. It is the closest city to the Ulju rocks, one of Ariddia's most notable natural features.
Wueliw has a Wymgani population rate higher than the national average, and Wavecrest is no exception. Some Wymgani still live in forest dwellings, and commute to the city for work; the thick, pristine rainforest starts at the very edge of Wavecrest.
The city's most notable museum is the Numismatics Museum, which displays an impressive collection of monetary items (coins, banknotes, but also other items used for trade) from throughout the centuries and around the world. The museum also explains in detail how these items were and are used.

A quiet city despite its population, Haven is home to the beautiful Pacific Botanical Gardens, and the Wymgani Cultural Centre, which coordinates Wymgani cultural exhibitations and events throughout the city and the nation, and contains a permanent indoor and outdoor museum dedicated to Wymgani culture, history, society, beliefs, way of life and art.

Ariddians are looking forward to the influx of foreign visitors discovering the islands for the first time. Not to mention that the increase in tourists is expected to provide a welcome boost to the Treasury’s almost empty coffers.

Foreign visitors should be aware that Ariddians attach great importance to animal welfare. Ill-treating an animal is not merely frowned upon; it is a crime which may land you in gaol. Killing an animal, except under certain specific circumstances, will lead you straight to prison, and to a lengthy term of community service. Fishing is strictly prohibited as a grievous crime. No meat, fish, or products containing elements obtained through the killing of animals may be brought into the country; you will be required to relinquish them at customs. Attempting to smuggle such items in will mean deportation, possibly after prosecution.

On the other hand, Ariddians are famously tolerant and permissive regarding harmless behaviour which might be deemed immoral in other countries. Acts of affection, including sexual acts, may raise a few eyebrows of surprised amusement if performed in public, but will be deemed neither shocking nor illegal.

Visitors should also aware that Ariddia's economy operates on moneyless principles. As a foreigner with a source of income, you will be requested to pay for any goods or services you require. Do not be surprised, however, if you see Ariddians selecting goods in a shop and leaving without paying, after showing shop personnel their Ariddian identity card. Any money you spend in Ariddia will go straight to the communal and national Treasuries.

Style modifier (if there is one): +3 (out of 5)

BURCHADINGER UNVEILS NEW KIT

Image

Burchadinger unveiled its new football kit for the landmark World Cup 50 in Krytenia and The Holy Empire. The new kits have been designed by Daiden AG, who yesterday, agreed to make kits for the national team for another 5 Cups. Daiden have also expressed their desire to start going worldwide. Johannes Godce, CEO of Daiden, was interviewed by our reporter. "I think that Daiden has the ability to expand worldwide. In fact, I'm confident that at some point we can challenge the monopolies of JMC, Ediraf, X-Spordiga and Tenderville4Sportswear." Godce said. He also mentioned that he was going to ring up national teams to see if any were interested in getting contracts.

The national team were happy with the change. Markus Klogh said, "I liked the T4S kits, but to wear a local made kit which looks just as good feels good!" The team will debut in their new kits in a friendly match against Delaclava.

Johans Blog
The sun is setting on another day of pre-World Cup 50 training in the misty mountain training grounds in the East of Swartaz. Everybody has been working thier socks off in training, prepairing for the World Cup. We really want to make a mark on this one, really show we arent a team to be messed around with. We've got one goal. That's to get the World Cup finals. Nothing else matters. All the dreams about lifting the world cup, put them to the back our minds. The coach wants us in the finals. We've had time to mess about as a second class football side. We have what it takes to get there, I know it. We've got our first friendly in Storvansten against Valladares. There a good side, and wont be messed around with themselves. That's were it begins. We have to build the confidence right from the start. Noone is safe in the team. Everyone will have to fight for their place this time round. We know what the fans want too. Our fans are hungry for success, and very passionate about their football. If they dont like how were playing, they'll let us know. Trust me. Come on Swartaz!

National Football Team Press Conference

"So, Tommi Hinniao, how do you expect Kulverint to do in this World Cup? Do you expect better than last time?"

"Well, obviously last time was very good. Fifth place in your group first time round is not bad, but if anyone saw us in the Cup of Harmony then you'll know that we are very strong and willing to try hard."

"Your squad has only one change, with Farné Dré@na on the subs bench, why have you kept your team so similar?"

"We believe that stability is the key, but Farné is an up and coming midfield star, so we will almost certainly play him once or twice. Our first team keeper is great, our defence will do for now, our midfield is strong enough, and we have one strong striker, another World Class striker, in Janni Milverki."

"You seem to play up Janni Milverki's skills, why is this?"

"Because he will be the key to any Kulverintian success. Now, that is all we have time for, so goodbye!"

OK, 50, what's special about 50? 50 Isn't even that interesting a number, it's always seen as a landmark, but why? 100 makes sense, it's the first whole number with 3 digits. 10 is the first whole number with 2 digits, but 50? 50 is nothing and throughout this world cup we are going to try to ignore the “landmark significance” and other such toddle.

Right, first thing's second, Nethertopia v Somewhereistonia. A friendly between two Rushmori neighbours. A real something or other between two teams on the fringe of the world cup. Two teams eager to properly throw themselves into the elite. Well, at least we presume the Nethertopians are, you can never be too sure. Maybe it depends on how stoned they are. Still, very nice helpful people who we like a lot. They wanted a match and we are not going to say no to the team that hosted most of our home matches after all that trouble with them Kyrins. You know how it is? Anyway, this should be a friendly friendly. Nobody should be getting injured or anything, still a chance to flow a bit. A good ol' kick about.

Err, right then time for a quick run-down on some other current themes going on in Somewhereistonia:

Relations with a Diamond: What's that kinky Sonya going to do with that West Zirconian? We'll find out at some point! (maybe). Why can't these things just be easier? No cucumbers will be harmed in the making of this storyline.

Covered in the Black Stuff: Oil bonanza in Anseriska leads to... who knows? (story may or may not involve copious amounts of alligators). This might seem like more of a Malak story, and it is, but how can Somewhereistonia not be involved? Maybe we can shoot something! Plenty of Geese will be ready for your oven!

The Insanity of Sir Douglas: He played a team of flying dead pink ponies when he was manager for the Dariusville national team, how can this not have already led to trouble? Applicants get ready now! Yes, prepare applications to the manager position for Somewhereistonia. Some crazy shizzle is going down.

Minefields of Diplomacy: The post-war economic boom, and other issues (includes rebuilding effort – you'd think monks knew what a school looked like, right?). This will actually include minefields, although not in Somewhereistonia's rps, probably.

Something Han Comes This Way: The Han are here for Khan or something? Will something interesting happen? Expect special effects all over the place. Their emperor is still missing, right?

Technically At War: Possibly shooting stuff at Sorthern Northland if we can be bothered, maybe send them a declaration to say “look jackass, we ain't at war any more, got it?”. Maybe more diplomatically than that, but whatever. Includes an “I'm on a boat” medley by former Sorthern sailors.

I'm Sure There was Something Else: Yes, other stuff may happen, in fact as soon as I remember what it is, I might tell you, or something.

Maybe Some Football: Match reports may crop up somewhere, yes. Match-reports, for football? Simply bizarre!

OOC: If you wish to become involved/further involved in any of these story-lines, please send me a tg and I'll cram you in sideways somewhere.

<Beddgelert> if that were true, i'd never have woken up with pockets full of ketchup
<Nth|Tableinating> Oi, my slow semen have nothing to do with this conversation!

Starting 11

Formation- 4-3-3

Goalkeeper:Ivory Hiley (Glynorhan City)
Undisputed first-choice keeper is an inspirational figure for the defenders. Hiley, who offers authority and sharp reflexes, is a hero for City fans.

Left-Back: Maverick McGrapth (Corston)
Regarded as the best left-back in Glynorhan. Has a "they shall not pass" reputation.
Left-Center-Back: Stijn Montayes (Easthollow Edge)
Quick, athletic, and composed, he has a simple, effective style. Can also play as a midfield holder.
Right-Center-Back: Jan Muccio (Hedgehollow Athletic)
Appears nervy, but he is a defensive rock and a major goal threat in the air at free-kicks. Also has a powerful shot.
Right-Back: Dean Stellings (Mapledell)
Strong-tackling right-back who loves to get forward. He is a powerful defender and has great athleticism.

Left Midfield: Rube Bereznak (Kings Club in Delaclava)
His pass completion is superb and will fill the left-sided holding role for the World Cup. Hard-working, he is a very good dribbler, and he draws a lot of fouls.
Center Midfield: Digby Lavala (Stonedeer City)
Creative midfielder who is best in the center but sometimes made to cover the left flank. He is important to Glynorhan because of his elegant passing, intelligence, and competitive edge.
Right Midfield: Bartel Rediske (Buttershore FC)
Indefatigable young right-winger with a good left foot. Also a free-kick specialist.

Left Forward: Keefe Rippeon (Tigers in Delaclava)
Fast and nippy and an ideal foil for center forward Siminski. Pacy striker who recently transferred from City.
Center Forward: Chas Siminski (Cliffhaven United)
Widely considered to be the most talented footballer in all of Glynorhan. A gutsy, muscular player.
Right Forward: Kennedy Bibiano (Glynorhan City)
He is pacy, opportunistic, and technically gifted. He has lighting-quick speed and a razor-sharp mind to match it.

Return of Dazza's motherland to the World Cup 50

Yes, them commies from Ariddia have returned to the World Cup. Although, the Ariddia we see now isn't the same one as the past. Oddly, they have become more "capitalist" moving towards being socialists away from the pure Communism. We do have our resident Ariddians here in Jeruselem, but these Ariddians are no longer like the people in the motherland. They've become more like your typical Jeruselemite.

Jeruselem's most famous Ariddian, Dazzarina Dallas now Lady Dazzarina Dallas ... grandmother of the King of Jeruselem is still alive, just. It's ironic her children and grandchildren aren't card-carrying socialists but true-blue royalists. But echoes of the Ariddian motherland are here in Jeruselem, but strangely some of Jeruselem's capitalism has rubbed off in Ariddia too.

Some people dub the capitalist outpost of Ariddia which is West Ariddia - "Little Jeruselem". Mainly due to the billions of Shekels which Jeruselemites have put into the place. There aren't that many real Ariddians in Jeruselem, since the kids of these Ariddians are now just your average Jeruselemite.

POINT/COUNTERPOINT: Returning “old timers” good for the sport?

Kevin Collins, the editor-in-chief of The Rocket Report debates whether or not the high number of returning nations, many of which couldn’t tell you who Jeremy McAllister is, is good or bad for the World Cup with his executive assistant Meghan Traynor!

Yes, by Meghan Traynor

Newmanistan enters its 11th World Cup, but the previous ten have been without a legendary nation like Ariddia, who stopped participating just before we joined the scene. I have to tell you how thrilled I am to see them back, and maybe the Rockets will have the opportunity to play one of the greatest nations of all time, a country in which we have never had that chance to compete against. I know they’ll be a far cry from what they once were, but that’s not the point. Then we see all these other nations. We saw a bit of Casari before they left, and even though they are no where close to being the best nation beginning with “Cas” now, it will be cool to see them back in action. I think the spirits of the Tundra Falls Proving Grounds had something to do with this. After the prestigious World Cup 49 final was held on our most sacred grounds, maybe they had something to do with inspiring these former great names of the sport to return. I wouldn’t put it past it. Newmanistan and The Babbage Islands, after putting on a great show for World Cup 49, set the prologue for this One Big Comeback of these nations. Maybe they saw how beautiful things are in One Big Island, after all. Ok, so all of this probably had nothing to do with it, and it is a symbolic World Cup. And I am very happy that for such a symbolic Cup, we’ll have so much of the old crowd.

No, by Kevin Collins

Great for the World Cup? Are you kidding me, Meghan? Just because some nation played in some World Cup a long time ago doesn’t mean I should be excited about them. Half of these countries don’t know a damn thing about the nations in which co-hosted World Cup 49, but here they are in World Cup 50 expecting people to get excited about their return. Sorry, you can count me out. Look at Ariddia, they played in 39 World Cups (1-39), but a total of zero World Cups in which Newmanistan has been in, having joined in World Cup 40, has been in. Then they nearly make a mockery of the Baptism of Fire by making the semifinals. I’ll tell ya that I am very grateful that F1- Insanity, a true first time nation, won that competition. Miceland? Geisenfried? Casari? And now I’m hearing mayne Andossa se Mitrin Vega and Dorian And Sonia? What the hell is going in here? Hey look, it’s nice to see these nations again in international play, but if they’re only here for symbolic reasons, this being the 50th World Cup, then you can count me out of being excited. The World Cup needs to be about Candelaria And Marquez. Dancougar. The Holy Empire. Sarzonia, and other nations at the top. When we talk low ranked teams I wanna hear F1- Insanity, Balida, and Burchadinger. Nations that might be sticking around. Not these one-off returnees, which I bet at least half will be.

FOOTBALL IN FOCUS

After talking about Dynamo Dresden and Mil Rovers, Daniel and the guys talk about the World Cup

Daniel: Right, so. World Cup 50. Certainly a landmark event, guys?
Gerald: Well of course. I mean, you have guys like Arridia, Geisenfried and so many more returning, its definitely going to be special. Bus tickets, Plane tickets, Ship tickets, their all sold out. And all because of this event. And from last year's statistics, 24% of the population travelled back and forth to watch Burchadinger's qualifying matches. This year, their talking about something like 35-40% of the population travelling.
Daniel: And that's going to benefit the economy yes?
Gerald: Of course! In fact, the profit is predicted to nearly double the profit from the Burchadinger Invitational Cup. That is just how landmark the event is.
Daniel: Tylmen?
Tylmen: First of all, its great to have Burchadinger participate in the 50th edition of the World Cup. I think that, while the profits are going to be soaring high, it wouldn't be as close if Burchadinger got to the Finals.
Daniel: Well of course!
Tylmen: Well yeah! The event is very important. Even though we're not hosting the Cup, so many stadiums are being upgraded, for the reason that many foreign fans, as well as many home fans, are going to go to matches. They will be there to support their team. They will be there to jeer the opposition. That is how important World Cup 50, even in the qualifiers, is.
Daniel: Derek?
Derek: World Cup 50, hmm. Most important event ever probably. That is, until we get to World Cup 100! But yes, World Cup 50 is very special. Considering the record number of teams coming, its bound to be memorizing. We have new teams, such as F1 Insanity, who are new to the World Cup. And we have veterans like Arridia, who have returned for the event. For Burchadingans, this will be the real chance to show to the world what they can do. World Cup 49 was a strong effort. 4th in a tough group was very impressive, considering it was filled with teams such as Sorthern Northland, The Macabees and Pasarga. And I think we can do better in World Cup 50.
Daniel: But, wouldn't there be a tons of pressure on the players Derek?
Derek: Of course, there is no question about it. But just like Markus Klogh said, "You're always under pressure, even when you're not playing." so I think they will have no problem.
Daniel: Moving away from World Cup 50, we will focus our attention on the BFL. After the break.

Mass celebration in F1-Insanity

The F1-Insanity Certifieds football (soccer) team celebrates victory in the Baptism of Fire with a week's worth of celebrations. And today, once again a massive crowd showed up to celebrate victory. In its short international history, F1-Insanity has built up a reputation for winning by claiming victory in both Baptism tournaments (Iron and Fire).

Image

Celebrations were kicked off last monday in Sid City, home of the Certifieds, and has moved through several of F1-Insanity's larger cities, now finally arriving in the capital, Mulcahey City. Our dear leader Father Mulcahey, founder of the national Tirefitter Party, will host the Certifieds later tonight. All drinks are half price today, also for visitors

It remains to be seen what the Certifieds can do in the World Cup, being newcomers with a relatively low seeding. "Anything that gets us past the group stage would be great", said head coach Brian Camara.

The Balida Star
Bringing You News That Matters Most

Return of Reyes
Perhaps the most recognized name in Balida seemed to be down and own over the last year. Reyes didn't play in the Cup of Harmony, or the 5029 BFL season. Even with the announcement for the Balida National Team squad didn't include him. Hale Tristivo is overjoyed to say, "After learning of Reyes' recent performance with Dynapolis United. We have officially decided to add him to the national roster once more."

Enrique Brandis, center defensive midfielder, will be put onto the bench. Marcel Debem, center attacking midfielder, will be moved to right center midfield. James Sias, center forward, will be moved back to left center midfield. Reyes will be added as striker beside long time rival Alexander Heim.

"We are looking forward to seeing Reyes bring back the excitement to Balidian futball," says Rodger Farwell.

Ariddian nationals and citizens in Jeruselem World Cup history

The Dallas Clan

Three generations of Dallases have turned up in World Cup. Two sisters Debbie and Dazza started things and considered legends in the history of Jeruselem's football history. Generation 2 includes Fiskin, Hifkie, Major Rashina, Giovanni, Queen Kate (Katherine Alexandra) and Princess-Antoinette Dallas. Generation 3 is only Princess Shay Sasha Dallas, Hanna Justine Dallas and Celina Sadie Dallas. Young Princess Helena is too young but like her mother Marie, she looks like joining this list.

Princess Jacinta Sasha Dallas never played a single game but has been part of the Jeruselem FA's administration and is the current President known for her efficiency as a administrator. Dr Sally Dallas was the team doctor for a while. Both ended up marrying World Cup players.

Only Dazza is actually an Ariddian citizen. None of the descendents of Debbie Dallas have royal titles as only Dazza's side can claim royal titles because Queen Kate is Dazza's daughter.

The Sallad Clan

Not all Sallads are a Dallas. Only Mary Sallad, now dead and her kids and grandkids. Mary is technically a sister to Debbie and Dazza. Her two girls Kate (Katherine Anne) and Jacinta had long careers but both retired to work at Naked News Jeruselem. Jacinta Sallad's daughter Lucinda is a now a goalkeeper for the World Cup 50 team. Kate's daughter Sam (Samantha) is a great talent but is unable to play football on grass due to being allergic to grass - so she plays Futsal instead.

Von Anderssen To Play In World Cup, National Team Says
Soccer Star Will Help The Team To Victory

[float=left]Image[/float]

To help the Orlkjestadi National Team to victory, star soccer player Josef Von Anderssen has been drafted to the team. The star soccer player, at 19, has already won many teams over 10 domestic cups. He has had to battle with leukemia since a young age, but that has not stopped this star. Nothing seems to stop "The Rocket", as he is often nicknamed. The star has been playing soccer since he was 3, and went professional at 16. He won the coveted Southern Cup the same year. The next year, he won both the Southern Cup and the National Cup. By then, Von Anderssen had become a household name throughout the nation. Von Anderssen is expected to help the national team a lot this World Cup.

Sea Dragons Cometh - Again

Translated from Vegan

The international sporting world was found today in a complete and total uproar as our new Presidente Commandante, Her Royal Highness Estrianii Raelea Vega announced that our beloved Sea Dragons would make a long overdue return to international competition. Here at home the uproar became even louder as it was announced that the Sarzonian national side would be making the trip here to Errion Vega for the friendly match. Not even the most optimistic fans had even dared to dream that the news would be so great.
The announcement also marked the new PC’s first international endeavor since her ascension to the throne some twenty six days ago. Ended now are sixty-plus years of isolationist rule that followed the assassination of our most beloved PC, Viastormin Vega- a man long known and respected for his abundant love of sport. The people of ASMV can now look forward to the bright future that was abruptly cut short long before its time.
But bear in mind that these indeed are new days and the result against Sarzonia is likely to be brutally one sided - and yes, in their favor. Gone are the days when the Sea Dragons commanded respect on the pitch. Gone are the days when everyone in the World Cup shivered upon finding our squad in their path.
Buried in the past are legends such as Porche Alexander, Pablo Iglesias, and Evan Evans. Lost to time are the Golden hands of Shaun Conarky and the defensive wall of Unami and Unori Banta-N’bai. And in their place is a rag-tag bunch of players who would never have even seen the pitch in the glory days that have now passed.
The dawn of a new Sea Dragon Era on the Fuborii pitch begins now and we can only hope to gain a tiny bit of our former success. And the question now looms large over our heads - Can the results on the pitch justify all the attention the new Sea Dragons are receiving? The answer is simple- No. But some moments are great enough in and of themselves to transcend the final results between friends on a Fuborii pitch. For the people of ASMV, this is one such moment.

In the team dressing room after another vigourous training session...

Ronald Caesar: Well, we saw some improvement today, especially after miserably crashing out of the Burchadinger Inivitational Cup like we did. If we can just about scrape into the World Cup, then that will be great, but if we just miss out, then that's fine in my books, as long as we had a really tough group. This team is number 70 in the world, but that means we have to start acting like we are World number 70's, not some rubbish team out for a bruising.

Matthew Lawrence: (gets up) Well, this is probably going to be my last World Cup cycle, so chances are you won't be seeing me on the pitch come WC 51 qualifying. So, I want to see and lead this brilliant team to WC qualification, and then will I retire happily? Yes, I most certainly will.

Ronald Caesar: So team, you know your job, now you have to prove to me you are capable of beating the best by winning the pre-qualifying friendlies.

Dylan Bell: So who are we playing?

Ronald: We will be playing one of the previous co-hosts, The Babbage Islands, who are a team around our strength, so we can show them who's boss. The other friendly is against the lowly team of Toiletdonia, a team with little experience, and they only recently started playing football, reaching the Round of 32, the same round Westmeadow Tavern were knocked out from. That should be an easy match.
