Imperium Aeternum was not to be. The Carthaginians simply didn't fold. As a result, the Carthaginian Empire stood as an eternal rival to Rome, thanks to the military aid of the Egyptians. The Romans ruled vast swaths of northern Mediterranean, and Carthage ruled the south. Egypt sprawled in its native land, while Judaea remained in constant limbo between the armies of Egypt, Persia, and Rome. The lands of Gallia and Germania were influenced by Roman culture, even using Latin as a secondary language to their native tongues, but still retained cultures of their own. Hispania was split between Rome and Carthage, with the Basque people retaining their sovereignty as long as the Romans and Carthaginians fought. Finally, after many years of combat, these empires fell, one by one. First, the Carthaginians fell, in 600 AD after a diplomatic falling-out with Egypt severely weakened its ability to defend itself from the latest Roman onslaught. Then, the Romans split into the Greek-run Byzantine Empire, and the Roman Empire, which still spoke Latin. These two separate nations continued. The Roman Empire finally met its fate in 650 CE when a joint invasion of Gallic forces and Egyptians ravaged the landscape, reducing what remained of the once great empire to a shadow of its former self. Egypt was conquered by Islamic invaders but a decade later. Persia suffered a similar fate. Judaea was conquered by Islamic forces as well, but was only marginally controlled, eventually becoming almost completely autonomous. To the north, the Slavs reigned. Celtic peoples remained in Gaul and Britannia. Germanic people dominate Germania and southern Scandinavia, with Uralic peoples in the north of Scandinavia, alongside Finland, Estonia, and the land of the Magyars. In the east, the Turks roam the steppes, only subdued by their Chinese neighbours. Colonialism in a Europe has existed for over a century, and has no signs of stopping. Today, in 1840, what name will you make for your people? Will you be industrious like the Egyptians of old, strong like the Romans, rich like the Carthaginians, diverse as the Persians, or as great and peaceful as the Chinese? Will your people run a nation that will make its mark in human history?
The premise of this RP is explained in the introduction, but, simply put, the year is 1840. It has been many years since the old empires fell. Europe, much like in our world, dominates the global scale, rivalled only by a select few nations around the world. Players are allowed relative freedom with creating their own nations, but, around the Mediterranean in particular, conformity to the established canon is expected. For those of you that prefer a more concrete point of divergence, ~900 CE is more or less the date at which history stops being dictated by the OP, within reason. As stated in the mandate, please exercise reason.
