Voters in five rural Oregon counties approved measures on Tuesday to consider joining the state of Idaho, a part of a long-shot grassroots movement to break with a state dominated by liberal voters west of the Cascade Mountains.

I feel like people voting for this are the same kind of tell others "this is how it is in America (or whatever) and if you don't like it, you can leave." Something something move to Canada. I suppose they just want all of the benefits of that without the hassle. And then there's Idaho having to decide if they even want them, considering the aforementioned logistical problems.

Some officials in Idaho have expressed support. In the 2020 election, 921 people voted for Trump in Sherman county. Why don’t they all just move to Idaho?

Because then there'd be no one left in the county.

Because not everyone is privileged enough to be able to just move their entire lives? You do understand most Americans have no savings right?

Do most farmers own the land they farm? Because that would put most of them well beyond the general meaning of being poor.

Having said that it's rather silly to claim them all as being the 'landed gentry'. They're just people who have to learn to live with losing democratic elections like the rest of us.

Or sell up and move, I guess.

I know. This notion of changing the boundaries because you don’t like the politics is ridiculous.
Sorry their candidates don’t win or sit in the majority. That’s how democracy works.

Why don’t we make the three C’s in Ohio their own states or a non contiguous one or split New York or Nevada?

I quickly painted over an open-source map of Oregon to show which counties "voted" to join Idaho:

There are no words there, this resembles no known type of territorial continuity.

I mean, it doesn't really matter. Won't go anywhere, people will continue to whine about nonsense, etc etc.

I find it funny, though, that I've heard and read about all these "state secession movements" by conservative counties in Colorado, California, Washington, Minnesota, etc etc who all have very vocal, even popular movements among conservatives. Conversely, I haven't read about any liberal countries try to break free from, say, Texas or Utah. If they are, they haven't been very loud...

Looks like they should be joining at least three different states there, not all joining the same one.

The poor map would be super ugly afterwards though.

The map in this article is their ultimate goal. Jackson which is where Medford and Ashland are would never go for it. No presidential candidate has gotten more than 50 percent there since 2008.

Just noticed the five counties that voted to "join" Idaho are all solidly conservative (I would say right-leaning/right-wing but that's how the two-party American political system works, most can't see anything outside
the "liberal" and "conservative" ranges). What would they accomplish politically if their votes worked out, other than making remaining Oregon even more liberal?

Maybe we should just make the electoral college proportional, that would probably dampen the support for things like this.

A political party getting 26% of the vote gets 26% of the state's electoral votes and such.

I live in southern California, and have never been north of San Francisco.

Yet, I still find contention with the Jefferson movement, as they don't really have an economic centre and would also probably cut off or restrict water to the rest of the state, since they'd get most of our natural reserve in a definite "F*ck you, I got mine" move.

East Oregon is also part of where the definitely not racist but entirely Judeo-Christian white haven of the American Redoubt makes their westernmost claims, so I am not surprised.

If this somehow becomes a precedent where red states trickle in by the dozens to get the gat dang libral edyumacated ee-lites offa their prapurdy /s while not admitting the blue states of Puerto Rico and DC would be the kind of messy hypocrisy that is not at all out of place in the United States.
What if some ancient Filipina got really, really religious about the ocean?
What if there was a sizeable island between Taiwan and Luzon?
What if both of these generated bizarre and frankly random butterfly effects?

All of these and more are revealed on Glengo Island... ~+~~+~~+~

The parts of territory that "voted" to "join" Idaho are in red. You should be able to see the obvious problem there.
