2012 US Election: Mitt Romney vs Elon Musk

Please consider the following hypothetical:

It’s 2012 and the US presidential is coming. Mitt Romney is the Republican candidate.

However, Obama is not re-running. Instead, it’s Elon Musk.

In this timeline, Elon Musk has the same personality, achievements, and experience qualifications. However, he was born and raised in the United States making him an eligible candidate. Similar to Trump’s surprise emergence as a non-conventional pick, Elon wins the primaries and becomes the Democrat Number One despite having no political experience.

His platform is on the unconventional side but within the realm of the left on most issues and in keeping with his personality.

Let’s say you are eligible to vote. You must vote and you must back one of the two candidates. Who do you support? Why?

Uh... I fail to see how Elon aligns with the left at all.

If anything it'd make more sense to literally make Mitt the democratic candidate and Elon the republican one.

But to answer your question: neither, I was too young to vote in 2012

I don’t like Mitt Romney, but Elon is just not a politician.
However, I am not from the US, so I can’t actually vote, but wi outdo maybe vote for Mitt, idk.

I was thinking in terms of Elon having very environmentalist and futurist views and coming out in 2021 to congratulate Biden etc

I would have gone for Romney over Elon Musk. I don't approve of all of Romney's policies, but he is at least generally moderate, he made several statements against Trump and he has opposed hard abortion bans (which is something) and bans on contraception.

Musk frequently makes bizarre statements (often by Tweet) and downplays the dangers of the virus.

The US doesn't need another president like Donald Trump.

Wouldn't a false flag on the moon be more apt?

Then, Musk would drop out of the race -- in pursuit of his proposal of being the first person to build a moon city -- and there would have to be a replacement candidate... and who better than Obama (who already had such a good first term)?

Then, Musk would be happily working to get his team to the moon, people could vote for Obama's second term and -- lo! -- the world was safe for four more years.

Uhm, Elon, I guess? You're asking which flavor of disconnected rich scumbag I prefer, so I guess the one less likely to impose social conservative crap on the population.

Another bonus with Elon is that if he does all the same eccentric things in the timeline where he is President, it will diminish people's respect for the office and authority and that's cool.

Mitt Romney is the lesser of the two evils. He doesn't match the craziness of the dangerous "funny" plutocrat Elon. However I'm not eligible to vote in the US so

Well, Mike Bloomberg ran for the Democrats... anything can happen.

(Also, the Democrats are nowhere near 'the left', so it wouldn't be that odd for Elon Musk to be their nominee in this scenario on this front)

I wouldn't bet on that. Romney may be in the LDS, but as The Free Joy State pointed out, he has some less extreme policies regarding abortion and birth control. Iirc, Elon Musk had previously made some poor taste tweets about pronouns, so he wouldn't strictly be the better choice on this front

Musk. I really don't get why people are picking Romney here.

"Oh but he's a moderate" - No, he isn't. He's whatever he thinks is going to get him the most political clout at the time. As it became more apparent that Trump was going to have a tough time with the 2020 election, he grew more distant and blended more with the GOP establishment. Not to mention the guy is a slimy career politician who flip-flops like a badly-made pancake.

He's basically the generic US President in any action/disaster movie ever (and that's not a good thing).

For the record, I do not support Trump. I saw him as the lesser of two evils in 2016/2020 but not on a level of supporting him.

Well, Elon's not even eligible to run for president. The dude was born in South Africa and had dual Canadian–South African citizenship.

He only became a US citizen after 2000.
