Given where one of the more recently discovered COVID-19 patients came from (the Greenhills prayer room) I'm bracing myself for some Islamophobic Sinophobic generally bigoted jerk bitching about how "dem dirty [insert slur here] took that SARS-CoV-2 bug with 'em."

I guess we already got something like that here. Before the local cases jump to around 30-ish, Indonesia's known patient zero got messages that basically told her along the way of "why do you interact with foreigners" though she said that she doesn't even know the person from whom she gets the virus from (a Japanese national, btw).
I hate the lack of sense of the government (or whatever agency) that discloses her private informations.

If the sanitizer is being sold then yes capitalist, if it's being handed out as a precautionary care package then it's not and it would probably be considered a civil work which if the prisoners are lucky will count towards the mandatory service hours they very likely have.

It's being used for public schools, govt offices, transit, etc. Its not for commercial sales.

Because they're being paid $0.65 an hour for work that is obviously a lot more valuable than that, even disregarding the on-going plague.

Also, according to exactly one anecdotal report that I have seen, one New York prison has no soap or hand sanitiser at all and is extremely fucked if someone contracts the coronavirus, and that, if true, is just the height of bullshit. Peak cobbler's children having no shoes.

The inmates producing it are actually banned from using it due to the alcohol content. That has to be cruel and unusual punishment while a pandemic is happening?

Thats pretty mean yeah, but then again they are also probably the least at risk of getting it anyways, considering they arent you know, walking oit in the general public.

Here two simple and informative images:

COVID19 growth in various countries aligned to 206 cases:

Not a super updated list, but gives the idea.

Italy, in its northen regions, has already reached its hospitalization capacity limit (few days ago), and some hospitals are already making choices about which patients prioritize and which others to abandon to their fate, for lack of capacity to give treatment to everyone. (italian healthcare was ranked among the best in the world, but they have limits to how many patients they can manage at the same time, same as ny other nation)
Italy reaching its intensive care unit beds limit could be a result of particular conditions, like an higher elderly population (but not so different from other european nations and worldwide), and the unfortunate turn of events where the current main cluster was discovered first, and it also did spread first, into an hospital, infecting many already vulnerable patients (many also old) which were there.

Reminds me of the East German citizens who turned out world-class technical equipment etc, but frequently struggled to obtain consumer electronics themselves.

Prisoners are especially at risk, given that they're a highly concentrated population that can't, you know, leave. And they can contract the disease by way of the guards, the visitors, or a new inmate.

No one gets paid a real wage in prison labor. So it's a general objection to prison labor you have?

If the make the sanitizer the state prisons are on the list to receive it.

Yes. It's a perverse incentive. If people in prison can be used as dirt cheap labour then it's beneficial to have more crime and more people sent to prison for longer sentences.

If the make the sanitizer the state prisons are on the list to receive it.

I think it might have been a federal prison.

1. Much like the gulags, ok I understand your objection.
2. As this is a ny state issue, the feds probably are not on the list to get the sanitizer.

Maintenance came into my dorm today to disinfect everything. No symptoms from me or my bf (it's been 8 days since he came back, 10 days since he would have been exposed), so now I'm just sitting in my dorm while it smells like Clorox.

It also means there is less demand for paid labour, increasing unemployment. This is even more visible with community sentences.

Little bit of both honestly. Mostly clorox wipes.

I thankfully already wiped the desks and washed the beddings, so it could gave been worse.
