They must have been small if a book measuring a few inches takes up too much room. :lol2:

Most of the Bibles I've seen have been on the order of meters, not inches.

Someone mentioned earlier that bible study tools would be useful alongside bibles in hotel rooms. My grandfather has a set of verse-by-verse study tools that is comparable in size to my copy of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

There was a time in my life when my main domicile was a series of hotels. The Philippines being a Christian country, the Gideons would of course have a Bible placed in some of the hotels, or at least I assumed so -- I never did inquire whether the hotel in question had a pro-Gideon policy or not, but at any event all the Bibles I found in my lodgings were printed by the Gideons.

In any case, I love the idea of a book in every hotel room. Not just the Bible, but a random selection of the world's literature, including titles by world-renowned authors and those by relative newcomers, pious and secular tracts alike.

Now this, I could get behind. It'd be like an advent calendar - go into the hotel room, who knows what you'd find, rather than just a vanilla bible? Such a good idea. Heck, it'd even make me more excited if I did find a bible, knowing that they're not just a dime a dozen.

I am not very religious but I always liked having some reading material even if I brought no books of my own. Growing up in Arizona, basically all hotels have Bibles.

The ones in Utah also have Book of Mormons in their arsenal, iirc.

It's not something that every hotel does where I'm from, but in the ones that do, I don't care. I recognise that as a private business it's their right to outfit their rooms however they like (as long as it's legal) and as an athiest I just tuck it in the drawer and get on with the day.

I'd be more than a little surprised if there were some facsimile Codex Gigas' in hotel rooms, especially if they were put there by the Gideons, as it'd likely bankrupt them. :p

I suspect they're pretty well funded. They color-code the Bibles, it seems:

    Orange: given in sidewalk distribution[10]
    Green: for college/university students
Red: for in-school distribution to Middle/High school students
Digital Camouflage/Desert Camouflage: for the military[10]
Dark blue: printed in a language other than English[10]
    White: for medical professionals
Light blue: for distribution by the Auxiliary only[10]
Brown: for facilities distributions, (for witnessing in prisons and jails by Gideons)[10]
Burgundy: personal worker's testaments (for individual witnessing by Gideons)[10]
Periwinkle: personal worker's testaments (for individual witnessing by the Auxiliary)

Yes. Interfaith books should be in hotel rooms

I still have my red one somewhere. The brown ones are also used in English-speaking hotels, but I can confirm that the foreign languages ones are dark blue.

Sounds like some naughty Gideons brought too many with them, so they decided just to dump the rest in one of the rooms rather than take them back. :lol2:

Has anyone actually read the Bibles that people put in hotel rooms? Considering how prevalent the Bible is to Western society, I'm sure that someone who wanted to read one would have done so already. Not a big deal, just something I find odd. Put it in there, I don't mind, but I've already had ample opportunity to read one and have decided not to.
