TITLE:
Stunted Diversity
VALIDITY:
Reasonably good diversity, some immigration
DESCRIPTION:
Controversy has risen after it has emerged that the latest hit movie about a female immigrant cop had a male native-born stuntman doing action scenes for the lead.
OPTION 1
"In this day and age, in this century, are we really happy with this man stealing a job that could and should have gone to a woman of the correct ethnicity?" asks Libby Rawl-Byass, the social media doyenne at the lead of the protest campaign. "Lack of diversity in the movie industry is a global concern, with a small number of racially homogeneous men providing media content for a racially diverse world audience. Things aren't going to fix themselves -- we need positive action in the form of industry grants, education subsidies and diversity quotas. This will make sure everyone gets fairly represented across every sector of the industry that is currently under-represented, whether that's female stuntpersons, directors from minorities, ginger leading men or straight cisgender male make-up artists. We can make a difference!"
OUTCOME:
mixed-race paraplegic blind transgender lesbians are everyman heroes
OPTION 2
"Look, we'd love it if the international stunt community wasn't made up almost entirely of guys like us," says a stunt double, who is here in lieu of the stuntman who drew the criticisms. "Last year at Stuntcon it was ninety percent just guys like me, and a handful of wirework guys from Daguo, which made the end-of-night slow dance a little awkward. But till then, if you stop us taking those jobs you'll be missing out on decades of industry expertise and end up with worse movies for it. And besides, we're acting professionals, you know. I'm not an alien or cyborg either, but no-one complains when I depict one of those. Government has no role interfering with or censoring the moviemaking -- art is important, holding a mirror up to life, and enriching the world through the complex meta-narratives of our shared cultural storytelling. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to set. EMOJIS VS ZOMBIE CHEERLEADERS isn't going to film itself, you know." He grabs his pom-poms and storms out.
OUTCOME:
blackface is considered okay if the actor isn't listed in the cast credits
OPTION 3
"If someone cannot do their own stunts, then they are not really an action star," muses operatic dancer and patriotic comic actor Jacqueline Chang, who is in a plaster leg cast from her latest movie. "Every actor should do their own stunts. For sure, it takes practice, and dedication, and a few hundred takes, and a dozen or so bones broken, but you can see the benefits of it on camera. Especially when repeated three times from different angles!"
OUTCOME:
the only safe bet in acting is that you won't be able to get insurance
