World Baseball Classic 20: Roster Thread

World Baseball Classic 20
Roster Thread

Welcome to World Baseball Classic 20, hosted by the Dominion of Sportgirls. We look forward to seeing a few of you in our tiny nation during the qualifying stage, and others during the late stages of the tournament.

This is the place for team rosters, and only team rosters. Since one of the main purposes of a roster is to help competitors with their roleplays, if you have preferences about how your opponents should treat your team, its players, and game events, please be sure to include guidance with your roster. Also, please note (if you care) your typical batting order and any relevant pitching information -- likely rotation, closer designation, notes on other pitcher roles and characteristics, etc.

Good luck to all. Play ball!

Projected starting lineups
vs RHP: Lambert [LF], Hamilton [RF], Lowrie [C], Cupboard [3B], Gossage [1B], Larson [2B], Wakefield [CF], Rothschild [SS], pitcher. Dlugach bats fifth as a DH where there is one, and the 5-8 spots become the 6-9 spots.
vs LHP: Lambert [LF], Hamilton [RF], Lowrie [C], Gossage [1B], van Slyke [3B], Larson [2B], Wakefield [CF], Rothschild [SS], pitcher. Where a DH is used, Cupboard bats sixth and plays 3B, van Slyke is the DH and bats fifth, and the 6-8 spots become the 7-9 spots.

Expected starting rotation: Yu, Putnam, Plunkett, Kellogg, Knight.

Ray Lambert is the single most important player on this team. An electrifyingly fast outfielder and base-runner, he is also an excellent contact hitter. With a similar (though lesser) contribution from tall, rangy Dennis Hamilton, the giant catcher Alex Lowrie can not only make confident calls behind the plate, but invariably get more than one run when he hits a homer. Which, given his size and strength, is quite a lot of the time he hits the ball. He's vulnerable when having to recover a wild pitch as he's hardly agile, but he's so big that he might actually block a wild pitch without moving. Which is useful when you consider that the rotation includes a knuckleball pitcher, but more on that later.

There's a bit of a dilemma with the big men at the middle of the order. Owen Gossage is the best man for the job at first base, no problem there. Tripp van Slyke has a better average than the giant Max Cupboard, and pretty much matches him for power. But Cupboard fields better at the hot corner of third base, and Jumbo Dlugach also offers a big bat. The solution decided is one of rotation; switch-hitting van Slyke has a better eye against left-handed pitchers, so he plays when there's a leftie on the mound, while Cupboard is preferred when a right-hander is pitching. On road games with a DH, Dlugach fills in in the 5 spot against righties, while van Slyke takes the DH role against lefties so that Cupboard can field.

Eric Wakefield is the best defensive player on the team, combining speed with a hot glove and everything else you need at centre field. He can bat, too, and there's a possibility he could be moved into the 3 spot. Michael Larson is not the best athlete, but he does have exceptional awareness and vision both in the field and at the plate - he simply won't swing at anything even slightly out of the zone, and he always makes the right play in the infield. Expect him to take a lot of walks. Catfish Rothschild is a superb defensive player at shortstop, but a very poor hitter. It's often joked that he switch-hits because he's no worse batting left-handed than right-handed!

On the mound, the starting rotation is filled with finesse pitchers who can throw anything except a fastball worthy of the name. Tiny Asian-born Yorvit Yu throws splitters and cutters, but that's it for heat. He relies instead on the brutal movement on his knuckleball or eephus pitches, the latter of which travels at barely 40mph. He also has a deceptive 72mph circle change. The veteran George Putnam still has the fastest pitching in the starting rotation, with his fastballs clocked at up to 93mph, and he gets a stack of arm-saving groundouts with his sinker, splitter, and split change (though the latter isn't that much slower than his splitter, which ruins things a bit). A curveball completes his repertoire. Milton Plunkett's stock-in-trade is his "slurve", a viciously moving mix of a curveball and slider; he'll usually use it off the back of a sequence of unerringly accurate two-seam fastballs, and he'll throw in an eephus (which he learned off Yu) every once in a while. His other pitch is a power curve. William Kellogg also relies heavily on his two-seamer, which has plenty of movement for a 90mph pitch and invariably paints the bottom of the zone. Like Putnam, he has a good sinker, a good splitter, and a useless split change. He also has a slider, for what that's worth with his two-seamer to call on. Finally, Pat Wright has a reasonable fastball, solid slider, and a hard-breaking 12-6 curveball, but nothing else - and that lack of variety has seen him sidelined to the bottom of the rotation.

Out of the bullpen, Oliver Salmon offers heat, with a 95mph fastball and a useful two-seamer, but not that much control. He also has a poor split change. Josh Collins is used in late relief, and he too offers a 95mph fastball, although it - and his slider, slinker, and curveball, for that matter - lack control, and he walks a lot of batters. Luke Butcher has the variety of pitches to be a starter - including a surprising screwball to go with his 90mph fastball, hard slider, unpredictable circle change, and a lively 12-6 curve - but not the stamina, hence being used in relief.

The best players in the pen are definitely the two used at the end of games. Tizambuzon Hottotelen is usually used as the setup man; his fastball comfortably tops 90mph, he has a precise two-seamer in the upper 80s, his slider is deceptive, and he has a curveball as well. T.J. Posey may be a playboy maverick - he insisted on that number 69, and he's notorious for it - but anyone with a 100mph fastball needs to be feared as a closer, especially when it can be supplemented by a two-seamer and a splitter that both top 90mph, and a circle change that doesn't even hit 80mph. There will be strikeouts. And he will celebrate them.

Stadium: Trinidad Municipal Stadium

Trinidad Municipal Stadium is a fine faciality located in Trinidad, Lugo the capital of Lugo Province. While it isn't the biggest stadium in Western Cuba. Only holding 12,000 people in the bleachers in the stadium. However though it has a great atmosphere, and great service. The concession food is great. With Cuban cuisine even being served at the ballpark. Be sure to visit the Taste of Cuba. Located at the West Entrance of the Ballpark.

Sakurakoku National Baseball Team

Nation: Federated States of Sakurakoku
Demonym: Sakuran
Nickname: Silver Wolves (or just Wolves for short if no confusion can be made)
Home Stadium: Central Bay Stadium (capacity: 62,306) in Kugamachi. DH will be used for home games.

New players marked with asterisks(*)

Fielders - Name, Position, Uni#, B/T
Catchers
Ryu Takamori, C/1B, #36, S/R. Better batter than defensive catcher. Often pinch-hits for Uehara if runs are needed.
Hideo Uehara, C, #21, R/R. Defensive-minded catcher with strong arm to throw out basestealers.

Infielders
Genji Furukawa, 2B, #75, R/R. Youngest regular starter. Pretty good hitter.
Kappei Kusao*, SS/LF, R/R. Good speed and can cover a lot of ground on defense.
Hideki Miura*, 1B, #15, L/L. Recruited for his bat and the fact that he is a lefty.
Kenji Momose, 1B/C/3B, #93, R/R. Now regular first baseman with Yoshinori Sawada's retirement, though can play other positions as needed.
Minoru Shiraishi, 3B/1B, #44, L/L. Speed and good contact hitting are strengths.
Satoshi Takeda, SS, #45, S/R. Strengths are in contact hitting and defense.
Azusa Uemura, 2B/SS/RF, #9, S/R. Good feet, decent glove, subpar bat.

Outfielders
Toya Kaneda, RF, #27, S/R. Good defensive fielder and the best bat to get runners home.
Kei Maebara, LF, #50, R/R. He is most dangerous at the plate, though he has lost a step as he continues to age. Defense remains as questionable as ever.
Junichiro Mori, CF/LF, #99, L/L. Can play anywhere in the outfield and has good speed.
Mio Yamagishi, RF/2B, #22, S/L. Can hit hard but often inconsistent. Not great speed but known to make incredible catches when needed.

Pitchers - Name, Uni#, B/T
Starters (in order)
Taro Izumi, #30, R/R. Ace of the staff - has a fastball that can reach the mid-90s as well as a cutter, a slider, and a change-up.
Juntaro Ikeda, #59, R/R. Power pitcher who has both a 4- and 2-seam fastball, as well as a decent 12-6 curve.
Kyo Kunimoto, #58, L/L. Control pitcher whose repertoire includes a slurve, circle change, curve, and 2-seamer.
Shizuru Yoshino, #79, R/R. Relies on knuckleball and an occasional 12-6 curve to confuse batters and make them look silly, which tends to play into the mind games she likes to play.

Relievers
Manabu Hashimoto, #86, R/R. Long reliever.
Sadaharu Miyanohara, #89, R/R. Long reliever.
Keiichi Okazaki, #72, R/R. Swing man - Relies chiefly on fastball mixed with a couple of breaking pitches.

Contact your national team offices for tickets; a generous allocation of seats have been made available to each visiting team.

RP Permissions

Please do not godmod or cause my players injuries likely to sit them for more than one match. In general, follow the listed rotation and starting lineup, although some variance is certainly OK especially with a thoughtful RP. Otherwise, let your imaginations roll.

Team Background

The 25 members of the Sportgirls National All-Sport Team are all full-time professional multi-sport athletes under multi-year contracts with the Ministry of Sport. Each is a designated starter in two sports and a back-up in one or more others, and the whole squad cross-trains in whatever other sports the Ministry requests for international competitions. The coaches each have a speciality sport and a basic knowledge of others to assist as needed.

The original incarnation of the team focused on football and baseball and fielded a winter Olympic team as well. Although the experiment was short-lived, being shelved in favor of expanding the national football league, it produced several first-rate athletes including Caitlyn Ballantyne, football defender for Ranca Toco and captain of The Babbage Islands, and Megan Sullivan, speedskating Olympic medalist.

Ballantyne's personal sponsorship and support have been instrumental in Her Majesty's decision to resurrect the team and extend the core sports to six. The primary sports are football, rugby sevens, and netball, with secondary sports being baseball, volleyball, and gateball. Each athlete was recruited for specific talents in one primary sport. Nominal starting assignments in the secondary sports were determined after selection through further placement trials.

The Zwangzug Zebras!

Numbers after the teams denote their first tournament: this is mostly for personal record keeping. RPers have free rein, though I'd ask you to justify any departures from the given lineup or "rotation".

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

Manager: Alicia Brune (Inver Millers). Very soft-spoken woman, prone to being cariactured as giving long metaphorical speeches. This is mostly an image, though.

New Zebra policy, which worked pretty darn well last time, abandons the traditional idea of a bullpen. Instead, all twelve Zebras pitchers are starters on their professional teams (though they'll also come off the bench to work relief here). They'll start the group stage games in order; no set rules as to who comes in when, feel free to make it up if you're RPing before me (but probably not the starter for either the previous or following game).

#20, Gail Frez, R/R, 102d Gray Sox, 19 (starts in Miley World, Game 3 vs. Miley World)
#62, Rory Timber, L/L, Inver Millers, 18 (starts in Taeshan, Game 1 vs. Churchma)
