West Guiana Invite

Because of the lockout in the Major League Softball the MSL board of directors have decided along with the owners to host the West Guiana Invite to the worlds teams also fully knowing that softball isn't a widely played sport, they hope that this might be a semi-success.

Groups
If less than 8 nations sign up there will be only one group consisting of those 7 or less, the first goal is to get four teams (Each nation can have only one team unless other wise noted) each group would be made of groups of four just like many other internationals unless there's an uneven number of teams. There will be two groups of four for the 1st WG Invite, that will play a game a day, till we reach the playoffs.

Games
Each team will play one game each day unless we have uneven teams then there would be off days. The number of days this invite takes will depend on the number of teams that participate. Each team of the group will play each other twice.

Playoffs
The top two of each group will advance to the playoffs, unless:
* Only four teams compete then the next game the teams play will be a single game elimination, the losers would go and play of third place while the winners will go to the final.
*If 7 or less teams compete, the top four will go to a best out of three playoff system
*With 8 teams the top two of each group will advance to the playoffs:
Format:
Winner of Group A vs 2nd of Group B
Second of Group A vs Winnner of Group B
-----------------------------
the losers will play for third while the winners will play for 1st.
-------------------
Playoff games for each round will be a best out of three(1 game per-day), except the Championship round where it will be a best out of five.(2 games a day). The 3rd place round will be only one game.

Opening day victory for softballers
In Matting's first ever international softball match, Matting defeated Nicole Riche 3-1 to go top of Group A in the West Guiana Invite.

In the 3rd inning with 2 men out and Tim Trent at 2nd base. Matt Carmichael blasted the ball into the stands for a massive home run that put the Matting side up 2-0.

Nicole Riche responded in the 5th, with 1 man on 3rd base. The ball was hit into centre-field but Matt Carmichael couldn't get the ball back in time to prevent the run which brought the scores to 2-1.

In the 7th inning, Richard Aintree was on 3rd base, and when Carl Phillips launched the ball deep in right field, Aintree scored. Shortly after the game was over, which brought jubilation to the dugout who were proud of the players.

Manager Clinton Shariner said this in an interview with Matting Sports Radio: "It's great to be on top of the group, but we've got to take our experience from this win into the next game. We came here to win this tournament so winning this game was extremely vital."

Pitcher Aaron Szegal was impressed by the players attitude: "This was our first competitive game as a group, and winning this match will bring plenty of confidence. We want to bring this home for our nation, and winning this will definitely improve peoples opinions of the sport back home."

WG loses
Not a good day for the WG national Mens softball team, a day after a 5-4 win over Beaverriver, they lose 3-5 to the Matting team, which put West Guiana 3rd in group standings. However though this is only day two there is still four days left of the first WG invite, which is expected to change its name after this to he World Championship of Mens Softball.

Second straight win for Matting
Matting's softball players have won another match in the West Guiana invite.

West Guiana took the lead in the 2nd inning when they scored a single home run to make it 1-0. Matting fought back in the 3rdthough and Carl Phillips hit the ball into right-field with the bases loaded, and Will Mitchell (3rd base) and Ryan Bowers (2nd base) ran in to give Matting a 2-1 lead. WG scored a 2 score home -run in the 5th to retake the lead. Their lead didn't last for long though, in the top of the 6th Richard Aintree hit a 3 score home-run to make it 5-3. When pitcher Graham Richardson striked out the final WG player in the 7th, the Matting team ran over to the small contingent of travelling fans to celebrate their 2nd win in a row, which keeps them at the top of Group A.

Manager Clinton Shariner was absolutely delighted with the win "I told the players to go out there and show Mattish people watching at home why softball should become professional in Matting, and there making a very strong case for it. This group of players know how important it is that we qualify from the group, and consistency is key. We want to win every game, so even we've qualified from the group i'd still tell the players to make sure they put 100% effort in because one bad game can be the start of a bad run!"

Queen's Chronicle
Sports Section, p.2

Cavs Take Second Win

In their first ever international softball meet, the Calibri Island Cavaliers have won another match at the West Guiana Softball Conference.

In the first inning, Ma Raque was leading 0-1 against the Commonwealth. After striking out with two men on base (Erick Reene pitching), the Commonwealth came to bat in inning two. The second inning gave two points for the Isles, as Ivan Harris hit a home-run with Richard Lee on second base, letting the Commonwealths lead 2-1. Without either team scoring in the third and fourth inning, Ma Raque was able to tie with 2-2 after an ambitious steal of home base from third in the fifth inning. However, during the top of the sixth, Paul Harris moved to third after his ball was hit to left field, where he was able to score on the next run (hit by Quentin Thorpe). Quentin Thorpe was able to follow, after he moved to second after his ball was hit to centre-field. He was able to make a run to third after Ian Yamaguchi hit, and a final run when Gregory Bowers hit as well. After a seventh inning of very close calls by both sides, Cav's take the victory, 4-2.

"I am very proud of our Cav's", said Assistant Manager Bradley Smith, "We didn't expect much when we came her, just to get the Commonwealths some face time. However, now that we know we can come victorious, we're in it to win it."

Back home, Calibri Island is in silent jubilation, possibly in anxiety for tomorrow's game. Baseball-Softball Commissioner Glenn Bosch has sent a bottle of cognac to each member of the team, and promised more if they take a third victory tomorrow.

Well at least now they have more motivation than ever.

Matting lose first game in WG Invite
In a shock result today, #1 Matting were beaten 5-4 by #4 Beaverriver. Matting are still 1st in Group A, but they have missed out on a big opportunity to be the only 3-0 team in the competition.

After the game Clinton Shariner was blatantly disappointed by the scoreline "Out of our 3 games, at the start of the competition this is the 1 i thought we'd definitely win! Before the game I was 99% sure we'd win, and it appears to have rubbed off on the players. I take full responsibility for the loss and i'll make sure that this result makes us stronger and that we come back fighting and win this tournament!"
