I suppose Kayora could use one for comms, if she can hold it steady enough, but to hit a large (2m diameter receiver) low flying (100 kilometers away) satellite, she'd need to hold it within ±5.7 thousandths of a degree, which I think is beyond even her. And that only covers outgoing communications. How does she listen for a reply?

Also, I don't know if the AN/PSQ-23 has enough power to penetrate the atmosphere. I think you need ~2 watts for that on a clear day, and a lot more if it's cloudy or rainy (there's a storm going on in Blind Knife right now).

Beam divergence plays both ways: a more divergent beam helps with aim, but it mandates more power.

As for my satellites, Spyglass easily has the resolution to see hand-signals, but their constellation is always incredibly busy. Sentinel could probably make out ICAO Marshaling Signals, and Nexus would be more willing to spare time on one of those. Unfortunately, Spyglass can't see motion in hand-signals, because the refresh-rate of images maxes around five seconds per frame (note: not frames per second), and neither constellation can see something the size of a person through a storm (the Mystic constellation could, but those are classified, and they're still only prototypes).

Spyglass, in general, has larger mirrors than Sentinel, but neither is above 3 meters, and the satellite would have to be looking at the emitter. If you were doing laser comms, though, Nexus would rather you aimed for the dedicated laser-comms satellites in Medium Earth Orbit, because they could receive the signal while still working their normal duties, but that target will appear about 5 times smaller (0.4 arc seconds).

If you shoot a laser at a laser-comms satellite, Nexus will notice and begin listening. For the recon-sats, you need to tell him to start looking before you get jammed, or he won't notice the laser (actually, he might if it trips an LWR, but he'd be rather confused, and might not realize the beam is carrying data, depending on whether there's an obvious pattern).

And what are you suggesting Nexus would do to communicate back with the squad? All I can think of is dropping a Hailstorm pod near them with a friendly drone that can breach the jamming, and I doubt Monfrox would like that.

I don't know. I'm trying to think of how to make this work, but I don't see anything right now (besides Hailstorm, because Hailstorm always works). Frankly, I doubt the rangefinder's laser can even penetrate the storm.

IR radiation is readily absorbed by moisture... in short, if I shoot a bright-enough laser at a cloud, it'll light-up like a fiber-optic cable... raining down.

The limit of course, is the point at which the signal can no longer be measured. Lets say a max signal-range with cloud-bouncing/lighting of about 1 km/watt?

Likewise, I have some delayed-action IR flares/strobes, just need to hope the shell arcing to the clouds isn't spotted.
