Power, wealth, glory. They are what all men hunger for, and are the building blocks of empires. And you are at the helm of one such mighty nation, for the year is 1701 and the Age of Enlightenment has begun; signalling the glorious resurrection of culture and with it the age old struggle for dominance as Kings great and small vie to become a new Rome. But how will you accomplish this great feat? Shall it be through blood and conquest, to the clang of steel and whizz of bullets? Shall you conquer by the pen, impressing your foes with great rhetoric and building your hegemony through alliances and words? Will you build an Empire of gold? Using the vast new and resource rich lands of the New World to make yourself a King wealthier then Midas and far more glorious? The choice is yours….
However beware….for beyond the walls of your opulent palaces, the sweet serenades of your court orchestra and the benefit of your royal guard ideas can spawn chaos. For as the ideas of the great radicals spread like wildfire from the printing presses, to the taverns, to the slums, the ghetto’s and common masses ideas can just as easily topple a King as great armies. For fortune is a fickle mistress and if she leaves you the mob tired of decades of oppression, tired of famines and unrelenting wars can rise up and once and for all to the howls of the mob and the slash of the guillotine your Empire can disappear.
So the choices before you are many and great oh noble King. Will you be hailed a conqueror not seen since the likes of Alexander, expanding your rule by the point of the sword? Shall you triumph over all through intrigue and brilliance of cunning through diplomacy? Or shall you create a fabled empire of gold to bedazzle and impress your rivals? Shall you fall to the gutter and watch as your reign is ended in the burning of palaces and your own howl as the blade removes your head? And with it spur the revolution of democracy? We shall wait and see oh great King…for many perils lie ahead and one misstep can bring down men and gods alike.
OOC: Welcome one and all to yet another of those ever so popular empire RP’s in which we see a bunch of NSers play power-hungry despot, and as you can clearly see I’m your ever handsome host Ublia! Anwyho back on track, yes so basically this RP will be one of intrigue, cunning, war and chaos, sounds fun right? You the RPer as I’ve so graciously alluded in that intro will forge your own personal empire and try to subjugate the world beneath your iron fisted rule. Now like most of these RP’s there’s the usual point of historic divergence, and so I’ve chosen the year 1453. Why you may ask? Well I could just say a sense of whimsy but no…the year 1453 was a great turning point for the west. Constantinople the shield of the west and the last stronghold of the Roman Empire fell to the ravenous Ottomans. Meanwhile further west The Hundred Years War was finally coming to a close with French supremacy.
So what better time to screw things up then in the middle of the Renaissance in a year which clearly led to a new era of sorts. Now what you as the RPer can do is limitless (in terms of alternate history naturally). Maybe the Byzantine Empire survives to fight another day? Resulting in some last golden age of sorts? Perhaps France is defeated at Bordeaux by those pesky Englishmen causing the Hundred Years war to rage on….perhaps as time goes on it’ll be the Byzantines or Venice that reaches the Americas instead of the Conquistadors. Or maybe we’ll see the Ming collapse a little earlier so China can enjoy another Warring States period? Again the choices are yours. Well I’d best stop babbling cause y’all get the jist now go and have fun (don’t forget to read the rules first though).
Sincerely,
Moi
Rules:
1) Stick to basic RP etiquette and so on and so forth, (no trolling, flaming, godmodding, metagaming so on and so forth)
2) Tech will appear as it does according to our current historical timeline with a possible three to five year advancement.
3) War is war, strategy and tactics define the course of it. So I and my fellow co-Ops will decide on the victory of such confrontations and what not.
4) No hissy fits. You lose a war or favourite character a tragedy yes but guess what you can live to fight another day.
5) Random events can occur. Recently another RP made me realize the various RPers nations seem like paradise on earth. Well no more! Basically I and my fellow co-Ops will initiate random events to throw a monkey wrench in everyone’s plan, after all who doesn’t love a little chaos.
6) No mega-claims, honestly in this RP I want lots of action and RPers to come on in, so again mega-claiming is going to not be tolerated. (Though note with colonies isn’t as much an issue due to lack of population).
7) I am the god of this RP, and my co-Op’s my little helpers. As of such I can add to and or remove rules as I see fit.
Other fun stuff:
The Papacy: Who doesn’t love it, with its scheming Cardinals, avaricious Popes, all that lovely holy blood money and so forth? Well seeing as Europe still has a predominantly Catholic populace we need a Pope. Now there’ll be twelve Cardinals (I know we’re short a few but we also don’t need some schizophrenic morass of Papal backstabbing either) these twelve will be run by you the various RPers depending on your religious standing. And your goal is to win votes. However note the Papal States will have a player on its own, the idea of you RPing as a Cardinal is to get your guy to win as even though once their made Pope their the others guys character to be realistic they’ll be more friendly or forthcoming in deals with said nation. So say the King of France gets his old pal the Bishop of Paris/ Cardinal made Pope the new Pope will be all the more willing to let you divorce that inbred old gal who’s failed to give you any fine sons so you shack up with someone younger….
The Holy Roman Empire: The Heirs of Augustus…or well sort of from their point of view that is. As you all know the Holy Roman Empire was basically a very loose political confederation of states in Central Europe that feuded and warred from Charlemagne up until Napoleon tore it up in 1806. In our RP it’ll still be standing. And the post of Holy Roman Emperor is more prestigious then anything nowadays. But it also means you get tax revenue from the regular imperial tributes, technical over lordship of the German and Italian States, access to the imperial vaults and also the best bit its army…
How do you become Emperor you may ask? Again its vote buying time. If you RP as a Prince or ruler within the HRE’s historic borders you may stand a chance of winning the throne. Of course that means the usual skullduggery, not to mention a more conflict based succession should you find a powerful bloc opposed to the newly elected emperor. So yeah kids have fun with that.
National Focus/National Ideas
Your nation's National Focus is the traditional and cultural skills of your nation, and helps distinguish your nation from the rest. These ideas help establish a seafaring nation from those who prefer large armies. Each nation will receive two National Focuses that will remain with said nation, unless an OP allows a change to a National Focus. The possible National Focuses are as follows:
National Ideas represent your government's reforms and policies over the years. These may change depending on the circumstances, and more will be gained slowly over time. While National Focuses simply display cultural traditions of a nation, National Ideas show active government involvement in advancing certain sectors of its nation. Each nation will gain 2 Ideas per century and will help define the strengths of your nation.
18th Century:
Enlightened Despotism: Your nations rulers are benevolent overlords, for the masses are like children in need of guidance are they not? This idea makes rebellion less likely to occur, grants you an extremely centralized government not to mention makes your court a haven for cultural brilliance.
Blood, Iron and Steam: Machines are the future and your nation has recognized that. Transformed into a centre for the industrial revolution your nation has a huge output in terms of industrialized goods meaning a greater boom in terms of supplies and trade. However this also means your agrarian output is diminished which leads to squalor and dissent...
Carolean Model: Well disciplined, flexible and extremely versatile your army is the envy of many. Known for using only the latest tactics and the finest weaponry your army may be smaller but due to these boons it has a better chance of victory then a much larger and far more disorganized foe you may meet.
East India Trading Company: Your nations love for the goods of the Far East and New World have led to the foundation of a national merchant company. Granting you greater trading contacts abroad, professional mercenaries and also colonies as far as India and beyond.
The Rights of Man: All men are created equal! That's your nations motto after throwing out the old and brining in the new. With this you have embraced the beginnings of modern democracy making your nation noted for its liberal climate. Not to mention if invaded your zealous people have the ability to form impromptu militias to combat invading foes....
Pax Oceanus: The sea is yours and yours alone. Your nation has recognized the need to dominate the waves and has done so with frightening ease. Because of this little perk your fleet is twice as large as most and your navy ahead of the curb in terms of advances and tactics.
