Cotswold Trophy for international rules football

Postby The Babbage Islands » Fri Jul 03, 2009 1:31 pm

Fresh from the success of the Mcleod Cup for Babbage rules football, Babbage Football International announce an agreement with the Football Association for International Rules (FAIR) to promote an international rules football competition for interested nations. Herewith the details of the Cotswold Trophy.

The game

International rules (also known as inter rules or compromise rules) were designed to provide a compromise between Australian rules and Gaelic football codes, facilitating international play.

Gaelic football players receive the advantage of a round ball and a rectangular field (Australian rules use an oval ball and field).

Australian rules players benefit from the opportunity to tackle between the shoulders and thighs, something banned in Gaelic football. The mark also carries over from Australian rules football, with a free kick awarded for any ball caught on the fly from a kick of over 15 metres.

Details of the game can be found on NSWiki.

The Cotswold Trophy

The Cotswold Trophy will be contested between six NationStates nations over a six-day period, on a Monday through Saturday. The first five days will use a complete round-robin or league, with each team playing each other team once. The Grand Final between the top two teams in the league will be contested on Saturday. All games will be played at the Great Dome in Gernsback, Tesla.

Ties for qualification to the Grand Final will first reference head-to-head result, then net points differential, then total goals scored, then total points scored.

Scorination is anticipated for 1100-1130 UTC on each day.

The scorinator

The scorinator was developed by BFI, and derived from their earlier successful work with the Babbage rules scorinator. It includes both ranking and RP bonuses, produces match totals including goals, overs, behinds and total points, and is implemented as a spreadsheet in .ods Open Document format.

The prizes

All six teams will share in the purse of E:600 000.

Champions -- E:250 000
Runners-up -- E:125 000
Third -- E:100 000
Fourth -- E:70 000
Fifth -- E:35 000
Sixth -- E:20 000

About strategies

A strategy is a three-digit number with no zeroes and no duplicated digits, from 123 to 651 to 987. Higher numbers are somewhat more likely to produce offensive-oriented games, and lower numbers the reverse. But there are no guarantees.

A default strategy is submitted with a club's entry. Strategies can be changed for one game or for more games by posting to the event thread.

About roleplay

Teams have the opportunity to roleplay (RP) before the first game by posting a roster, and after each game by posting to a designated thread. A team's RP posts will be evaluated for bonuses added to the team's chance before randomisation. Length is less important than consistency; all of a team's posts on one match day will be evaluated as a single entity.

RP is not required!

To enter

The Babbage Islands will enter IFC Paris to represent the nation. Nations interested in the other five slots should apply by posting their interest, including a default strategy (necessary) and other desired particulars to this thread. Queries may be posted here.

A roster is not due immediately but will be strongly encouraged before the first match. There is not a standard nomenclature for positions in international rules, aside from goalkeeper. Feel free to use Gaelic, Australian, or your own organisation in your RP.

Yours sincerely,

Julianne Phillips
Commissioner, Babbage Football International

The SN is a very Irish influenced nation and I've often wondered about trying to get some GAA going, so consider us in.

Our strategy will be the epic 984.

Welcome, Sorthern Northland!

The Babbage Islands will adopt a rather odd and middle-of-the-road strategy. Let's say 537.

Since we're overrun with Sortherners at the best of times, it would be remiss of us not to sign up, I suppose... =RAND()*999 suggests 712 so let's go with that....

Can you clarify though whether this is tournament for club sides of one kind or another, or national representative XVs? You haven't made it particularly clear, unless I'm being notably dim.

You're right, I did not make it particularly clear. This event is for national sides. Whilst the host nation is sending its league champions to the inaugural event, they are entered in the name of the nation and will wear national colours of yellow and black instead of their club kit.

OK, I would like to reevaluate my strategy, now recognizing the new parameters, to a superior arrangement of 728, which is a slight variation on the tryout strategy which we feel we've balanced out much better, while still keeping some of the uniquie quirks.

(OOC: I'm confused about a few things, such as match dates and roster positions it would be necessary to fill.)

Thanks for the strategy adjustment.

Match dates: Monday July 13 through Friday, July 17, one match per day, scorination around 1100-1130 UTC. Grand Final for the top two on Saturday, July 18.

Roster positions: With 15 players on the field including a keeper, one could use the standard position names from Gaelic football. One could also adapt the list from Aussie rules (they play with 18 and no keeper, so some tweaking would be in order). It is also possible that if inter rules were more widely played they would evolve their own way of doing things.

It appears that we have six entries, so I'll post the who-plays-who later in the weekend.

To help out players unfamiliar with these styles of football, here's a list of traditional positions and associated player numbers in Gaelic football.

Goalkeeper (1); Right corner-back (2), Full-back (3), Left corner-back (4); Right half-back (5), Centre half-back (6), Left half-back (7); Midfield (8), Midfield (9); Right half-forward (10), Centre half-forward (11), Left half-forward (12); Right corner-forward (13), Centre forward (14), Left corner-forward (15).

The Australian rules teams have three more players and do not use a keeper. They also tend to be more flexible about positions.

Back pocket, Fullback, Back pocket; Half-back flank, Centre half-back, Half-back flank; Wing, Centre, Wing; Half-forward flank, Centre half-forward, Half forward-flank; Forward pocket, Full-forward, Forward pocket. The other three players are followers, often roaming the entire field following the ball, but with specific roles during centre-bounces at the start of quarters and after goals: Ruckman, Ruck Rover, Rover.

Remember that international rules teams use 15 players on-field including a goalkeeper.

We have a full field for the tournament!

Candelaria and Marquez (712)
Luchsandria (728)
Palmouth (922; needs adjustment)
Sorthorn Northland (984)
Surote (984)
The Babbage Islands (537)

Schedule

MD1, Mon 13 Jul: Palmouth v Luchsandria; The Babbage Islands v Sorthern Northland; Candelaria and Marquez v Surote.
MD2, Tue 14 Jul: Luchsandria v Surote; Sorthern Northland v Candelaria and Marquez; Palmouth v The Babbage Islands.

They're just things to tell opponents what you're ok with them doing and not doing. Such as whether you are ok with them selecting your scorers, or booking/sending off players, injuring players, feeding players copious amounts of pasties, running over their pet cat, anally probing them, whether they're the fat bastard that ate all the pies, whether you'd mind pistachio nuts being thrown at them, those sort of things.

RP permissions are just a guideline for your opponents, telling them what you're cool with them doing with your players without advance approval. It makes it easier to write roleplay and easier for others to write it when you can feed off each other through advance permission as well as by reading their posts.

My general philosophy is that determining my scorers and writing about scoring events is okay, no matter how outlandish. Yellow cards in sports that use them are fine, as are injuries that might take the player out for not more than a game. Anything more dramatic than that I want to do myself. Other people have different philosophies.

I will not let someone else decide if one or more of my players will miss any games, by injury or some other method.

Anything else, simply don't be outlandish. And noone told me, will there be threads for recaps, what's the etiquette there?

Unless it becomes unmanageable, results and RP will all go in this thread. I'll post match results in the format:

goals-overs-behinds (points)

for each side, followed by standings. Good luck!
