Welcome to the 21st edition of the World Cup of Hockey, hosted by the Equestrian States. Please feel free to begin posting your RPs and rosters here in this thread. Please direct any OOC discussion to the WCoH Discussion Thread.

Teams have been drawn into 10 groups of 6 and will play each team in their group twice, once at home, and once on the road. For the group stage, your own team’s arena(s) will be used, so participants are asked to include arena information in their rosters for the use of others.

New to Sports RPing?

First, if you’re new to the NS Sports forum, I strongly encourage you read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying.

For those of you who want me to simply get to the basics, the first thing you’ll want is a roster. A roster is a list of the names of your players and what positions they play; but if you want, you can post other information as well. This can include, but certainly isn’t limited to: line assignments, strengths and weaknesses, statistics, and performances in previous tournaments or in your own domestic leagues. Other common elements of a good roster include images and information on arena(s) your team uses, uniforms, and coaching staff.

Second, you may choose to assign your team a style modifier. A style modifier is a value between -5 and 5, which may play a role in determining the number of goals your team scores and/or concedes. A team with a higher style mod is more likely to score goals, being more aggressive, but is also more likely to concede them as well due to taking unnecessary risks. Lower style mod teams are less likely to score goals, but are much less likely to allow goals as well. It should be noted that style mods do not play a role in determining who wins or loses games, only what the score itself is. Should you choose to give your team a style mod, please make it clear to me by including it in your permissions box (see below paragraph), bolding it, underlining it, or otherwise making it clear to me.

Finally, you should also include an RP Permissions box in your roster post. It is an essential part of participating in any tournament. The idea of the box is to let your opponents know what you are willing to allow them to do, and what you aren’t willing to allow them to do. This includes injuries, goalscorers, etc. Please post the following somewhere in your roster when you post one:

Code: Select all
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following...
Choose My Scorers: Yes/No
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes/No
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes/No
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes/No
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes/No
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes/No
Godmod Other Events: Yes/No

Scorination

Games will be scorinated between 4:00 and 6:00 PM EDT each day unless otherwise noted. Should the cutoff time need to be changed, it will be pushed back and I will try to give no less than one day’s warning before this. It should be noted that the playoff schedule is subject to change as my RL schedule is not fully pinned down during this time.

Tournament Schedule

Wednesday, May 29 - Group Draw Posted; Group Stage Schedule/Match-Ups Finalized

Playoff Stage
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the playoff stage along with the top four third place teams. Group winners will be seeded 1-10 based on the established tiebreakers (see host bid), and the top 8 seeds will receive an automatic bye to the round of 16. The other 16 playoff teams (seeds 9-24) will face each other in a one-game playoff to determine which teams will advance to the next round. The play-in games will happen the day after the conclusion of the group stage.

The winners of the play-in games will be re-seeded to determine second round matchups, after which there will be no further re-seeding of teams. All playoff series will be held in neutral venues throughout the Equestrian States and will be best-of-three, except for the championship series, which will be a best-of-five series.

The Pony Republic of Equestrian States
World Cup of Hockey 21 - Host Arena Information

Welcome to the Equestrian States!
If you're reading this, then you're likely one of the many ice hockey fans expected to attend the 21st World Cup of Hockey playoff stages here in our country. On behalf of all Equestrians, let me be the first to welcome you to the Equestrian States. Our country is comprised of over 200 islands, but the vast majority of the ponies and other sapient creatures that call the nation home dwell on the largest one. And yes, the rumors that you may or may not have heard are true: the Equestrian States is populated primarily by sapient miniature equines (or ponies, as most prefer to call them). But don't let that minor detail prevent you from coming here, as the country can still safely be considered a prosperous, well-developed, and modern nation by any standards.

Quick History
The Equestrian States was originally colonized by ponies from the equine homeland of Magical Equestria over a millennium ago, with its society developing similarly to that from which many colonists came. However, contact with the rest of the Pony Lands was severed when the malevolent being known as Discord seized control of Magical Equestria and much of the region. To escape the attention of the chaotic Discord, the Equestrian States adopted a policy of isolationism that it would maintain for the next 1000 years.

As the isolationist era policies crumbled several decades ago, the Equestrian States emerged from the northern reaches of the Pony Lands as a smaller nation. However, rapid growth soon saw the nation begin to develop its own industries and find its place in the international and regional communities. Today, the Equestrian States' economy is dominated by agricultural exports as well as the mining of precious gems and minerals in the mountains.

Society
Being equine-dominated, the Equestrian States has developed a compassionate and welcoming population. Although some might find non-equine foreigners to be unusual and threatening, most simply treat them as they would each other. In general, it's difficult to make an Equestrian angry without attacking or insulting them, which isn't advised when dealing with pegasai as they have a tendency to be more aggressive than other equine species. Also, referring to a pony as a horse is considered an insult as it relates the being to the farm animals located in other countries.

Food in the Equestrian States is largely vegetarian, though foreigners can still find meat products in restaurants and bars run by non-equines in almost every city. Additionally, alcoholic apple cider and wine replaces beer in most Equestrian bars, being locally brewed by farmers.

Venues
Shifting to what I'm sure most guests would like to know about, the venues for World Cup of Hockey games will be located in several cities throughout the Equestrian States. However, unlike many other countries, professional ice hockey in the Equestrian States is primarily played outdoors (with a few exceptions). Thus, the games will be played in a number of outdoor venues used traditionally for other sports. But don't worry about the weather wreaking havoc on play. With pegasai naturally being able to control the clouds, wind, and weather, the Equestrian States can safely assure fans and players alike that no blizzard or unusually hot day will mess up the balance of competition here. OOC: Essentially, the games will be played in hoofball (football/soccer) stadiums like the NHL's Winter Classic.

Qazoxian Turnip
Your News, Our Way!

Still #1... but how? The IceWolves are still #1 in the world, despite losing in the Finals to Havl, a team that will be back defend their title. So what does that mean for Qazox? It means we're one of the favorites and have a target on our back, again. But given that this team's been together for 4 Cups now, one gets the feeling this is the last shot for the IceWolves before the young'uns get called up.

The Arena

All of the home games for the Strettan National Hockey Team will be played in the arena found at the All Maiden Sports Complex.
Image

All Maiden Sports Complex (Hockey Cap. 22,000)
The All Maiden center is a sports mega-complex just outside of the capital city of Giroux. It provides excellent travel options, including special event-day underground train service into the heart of the complex from the center of Giroux. It houses three sports, securing its place as the premier darts venue, the home of the Giroux Giants ice hockey team, and the Giroux Horde, the capital's gridiron football team.

The hockey arena features seating for 22,000 (the largest in the country), which are split across three tiers.

The Journey

Drawn from the Strettan Hockey League, these 18 players are the best that the nation has to offer. The team features Giroux Giants captain Claude Rivers and goaltender Julian Mason, who will be relishing the chance to play their group home games on familiar ice. Other notable players are the two Klinsman brothers, the family of which has a long history in breeding wingers, and whose father won the SHL with the Gerfent Red Jackets two years on the trot. Bully-boy Mantello, who found national headlines after breaking the leg of a Kingsharbour Taverners player in the last season, will center the third line offense at the competition.

The team will have a lot to prove at the first ever international ice hockey competition to feature a Strettan national side. They will be hoping to match the recent performance of the first national football team, who marched to victory in the Baptism of Iron and made great progress through the World Bowl.

FEDERATION OF POLAR ISLANDSTATES ROSTER
"THE FIRS"

Ice Hockey in the Federation, for all its climate may hint at a national obsession, still sits below football in terms of popularity, vying with the rugby codes, veggball, and handball when it comes to the 'honour' of being the nation's 'second sport'. However, thanks to performances that continue to surpass expectations at previous world cups as well as victories for Hounds of Juura and Invermuir Eagles in the Champions Hockey League, it's appeal is growing fast. The NPHL has proved a success so far since its foundation, and the spread from the traditional Terra Scotian heartlands towards the Kuril Arkhipelago teams in terms of strength and recent championships is shown in the players selected here.

Polarians are a warm bunch, every as warm as the land they habit is cold, and are ruthlessly efficient and athletic almost naturally. They are pacifists by nature, and will rarely start fights. This doesn't mean they won't fight back, of course... Fierce rivalries between the more hot-headed members of the squad from the bigger domestic teams, such as Invermuir Eagles and Hounds of Juura, or Matua Ice Wolves and Fjorhorgen Generals, can sometimes spill out onto the ice, and inter-squad arguments are something that coaches Idris Heliokomman and Nils Freidrichson have to deal more frequently than arguments with opposition teams out on the ice. Inspirational leader Radoslav Invermuir has retired, and he leaves a spot that Jakob Babich, the man who had lead Matahiko Dynamo to consecutive Elkjaer Playoff victories, has now got to fill. The Firs have decent pedigree in the competition, having finished as runners-up before, though they recently haven't had much success. The shoot-out defeat in the final match of the series against Cotdelapoms in WCoH XVIII still hurts Heliokomman though, and the Firs are out to right that wrong.

BRIEF BIO

There will be all kinds of mixing between the strings, the lineups are not set in stone. Same with pairings. There is no major professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, but there is a minor league and a strong university tradition in the sport. The Ibex are pulled from a mix of the two, but most of the stronger players come from Burgunden University or the Ciavno Jackals, the top minor league hockey team.

Starting G #7 Prince Josephus
Backup G #9 Ioannes Laetonius

Notes

Prince Josephus is not the heir to the throne, but he is a Prince of Saintland. He is the younger brother of Prince Petrus and Prince Ioannes and the twin brother of Prince Andreas. Line #1 is the scoring line and the one that handles power plays and penalty kills. Clovius is the 2-time reigning league MVP in Saintland. The Trebatius brothers and Murrius brothers are the 2 brother combinations on this team. Saintland only uses 3 lines in ice hockey. In ice hockey, as in every team sport, the style of play in Saintland's national league is very physical and many things that are considered fouls in international play aren't fouls in Saintland. Sanctii defensemen are very likely to get into fights at the slightest provocation, if their team is losing or if they are facing a rival and/or somebody they really don't like. This team won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics. Recently, they finished 3rd at the World Championship in Field Hockey despite having never played the sport prior to the tournament.

THE MAPLETISH UNION NATIONAL TEAM [ICE-HOCKEY]
" THE MINNOWS "

Ice Hockey in the Mapletish Union is considered to be the most popular winter sport in Mapletish, one notch above bandy. However it sits below the different types of football in terms of popularity and comes in direct competition with the various rugby codes, basketball and baseball, for a popularity standing as the second most popular sport in the Union. More or less, the increasing popularity of ice hockey came with the performances of the Minnows in recent times. The Mapletish Ice Hockey team has suppress expectations in the recent world cups as they sit at their highest point, forth in the world for ice hockey, ranked among the multiverse's elite. In the previous world cup, the Minnows finished forth behind cross border rivals Micheal VII in a tense third place playoff match.

Following the revamp of the team, the kits are also changed from the old white kit to the red and gold kit with bits of grey to show the fiery and desire as the team once again tries to make their way into the ice hockey international scene with a swing in action.

Postby Northern Sunrise Islands » Mon May 27, 2013 4:27 pm

Northern Sunrise Islands is a country in the north of Esportiva, which capital is placed at Mardi. The nation's animal is the Marill, however, the Sunrisian hockey team is nicknamed by their own fans as the stars, based on their crest and the flag, these stars are based mainly on the main seven islands of Northern Sunrise Islands: Arrendine, Ayeville, Charleston, Lynder, Mabel, Mardi and Mist. Another island, Solar is represented by the sun on the flag, but doesn't have any references on the team. The three colors worn by the Stars are blue, yellow and white; with the first two being the national colours and the last one to reference the nations' political neutrality. These colors are used promeninently at their Home and Away uniforms. Allthough not that fond of the Marill, the hockey team has also managed to include the animal in their Goalie Mask.

In club hockey, Northern Sunrise Islands host the Sunrise Hockey League, which composes of thirty teams. Also, Northern Sunrise Islands has a huge pyramid with junior clubs and minor leagues, something unique inside the region of Esportiva.

The Stars will have three stadiums that they will call their home, the CHL 14 final's host stadium,InComm Arena at Matthew City, the Snowflake Stadium at Lynder and the Union Stadium at Mardi. They'll be used rotatively (InComm Arena first, Snowflake Stadium second, Union Stadium third, InComm Arena fourth, and so on). Originally, they would play in the DuBeaux Stadium at Arrendine, but the stadium is going through reform.

COACH
Jean McConnery - Offensive as her father[Style: +2], Jean was picked to stay with the team, even though she's married to one of the players involved, Matthew Sioux. She seems to have wised up since last season, so we may hope for a good WCoH for the Stars.

"The Stars" are a very well disciplined team, that's why Penalties and Fights will be very rare against them. Also, keep in mind that they are mostly fast-paced players, which means that they will use their speed a lot, sometimes to aid them, but that can also screw them up (losing the puck, per example).

We're Plutoni and the robots are in italics.

RPers can do whatsoever they want. Most of the team generally doesn't tend to start fights, though will fight back if provoked. The "Gunners," "Humanizts," and "Demons" are more likely to instigate stuff.

Style mod +1.

TEAM CASSADAIGUA
WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY 21

With the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, Cassadaigua comes full circle in returning to all of the sports that we vacated. The return to hockey is a little different, because the team had been underachieving (by our standards) in the last few Cups that we had been in. This is a great time to clean house. So be it. All players make their international debut.

Coach: Samantha Preston

Goalies:
Starter- #31- Katie Poulin (6'0", 183)
Backup- #30- Brittany Chapman (6'1", 177)

(Mixing & Matching of lines can occur at any time. These pairs are the most common lines)

Line 1:
LW- #12- Adrienne Martel (26) (6'1", 192)
C- #16- Jennifer Dickson (Captain) (28) (5'10" 177)
RW- #44- Stephanie Lyons (25) (6'4" 220)

Dickson is a playmaking center, and will get more assists then goals. Martel is sniper, while Lyons is a grinder who likes to camp out in front of the net.

Line 2:
LW- #9- Lauren Gelinas (Alt. Captain) (27) (6'3", 204)
C- #15- Chelsea Paquette (25) (5'8", 170)
RW- #11 Hannah Tremblay (24) (5'9", 182)

This should be an exciting line as both Paquette and Tremblay have fantastic speed. Gelinas will often be trailing them on a rush, looking to pick up a rebound, or for a pass for a one-timer.

Line 3:
LW- #20- Caitlyn Lafontaine (25) (6'4" 223)
C- #8- Jessica Shaw (23) (6'3" 216)
RW- #21- Morgan Rochefort (28) (6'6" 230)

Checking line forwards who will often be out there against the opponents top line.

Line 4:
LW- #26- David Gosselin (29) (6'6" 249)
C- #28- Nicole Lepage (25) (5' 11" 180)
RW- #25- Greg Ducharme (27) (6'4" 233)

Lepage is a skilled center, and Ducharne is a solid power forward, but will also drop the gloves. Gosselin is on the team to drop the gloves.

D Pair 1:
LD- #2- Bryan Cloutier (Alt. Captain) (26) (6'2" 179)
RD- #4- Travis Curry (26) (5'10" 182)

Cloutier likes to join the rush, while Curry is a stay at home time.

D Pair 2:

LD- #3- Danielle Gagnon (25) (5'11" 185)
RD- #6- Sarah Mason (27) (6'3" 195)

Like the above; Gagnon is the offensive minded one while Mason stays back.

D Pair 3:

LD- #5- Nick Boudreau (26) (6'4" 222)
RD- #7- Stacey Marcoux (24) (6'2" 216)

Both are stay at home defenders and punishing hitters.

Also with team (usually announced as scratches before a game)
G- #35- Rachel McGrath (23)
D- #22- Justin Cairns (24)
D- #24- Emma Graves (22)
D- #27- Heather Ballestro (19)
D- #32- Kelsey Lavigne (21)
D- #34- Shawn Carney (20)
F- #10- Connor Lemay (18)
F- #17- Courtney Goulet (21)
F- #18- Brianne MacNeill (19)
F- #19- Tara Mercier (20)
F- #33- Maureen Laplante (18)

Specialty Teams:
PP1: Martel, Dickson, Lyons; Cloutier, Gagnon
PP2: Gelinas, Paquette, Tremblay; Curry, Mason

PK1: Lafontaine, Shaw; Cloutier, Curry
PK2: Tremblay, Rochefort; Gagnon, Mason

Style Mod: +2.5

Home Arena:
(Description/pic)
Image

Capacity: 350,000

We will have only one arena due to the others cleaning up after the TailsPrower(domestic) League(TPHL). Because of our nations size and desire of ice hockey our arenas on average hold 250,000 - 350,000 fans, and thus the atmosphere can be well very loud.
This arena is in our capital city of Mobius. It is the Mobian International Arena where our national team plays.
