Team Name: The Shofercian Eagles
Nickname: The Eagles
Country Code: SHO

Roster:

Line 1 (Torpedo):
LW Pashka Bren
C Sergei Sergeev
RW Lev Koper
D Dmitri Turchinsky
D Oleg Harding

Style of play: power forwards!

Line 2 (Rockets):
LW Frolik Aleksandrov
C Dat Pashkov
RW Afi Maksimov
D Mark Andreev
D Mark Danilov

Style of play: passing, passing, passing, GOAL!

Line 3 (Tigers):
LW Sam Ivanov
C Phil Tigrov
RW Slavik Milikov
D Ivan Markeev
D Artem Ushatik

Style of play: Start out in own zone, lure the opponent in, and counterattack!

Line 4 (Waves):
LW Cake Adamov
C Gordo Bomb
RW Charlie Shen
D Rob Smit
D Rob Kashpirski

Style of Play: tough on defense, hitting for turnovers, trying to intercept the puck, stretch passes

Goaltenders:
Victor Stolichnuy - had a 96% overall saving percentage, faced a lot of shots. Team lost in the semis, as they couldn't score
Basil Catnip - despite the humorous surname, Basil's team, the Rockets, took second place, in a large part due to Basil's 92% overall saving percentage. If Basil could play with stability, he would rival Stolichnuy, as his talent surpasses Victor's, but he's still young.
Erema Aleksandrov - Taken as a sub-goaltender, because his team, the Torpedo, won Gold. His 90% average saving percentage is not the best, and considering his defensive support, it should be better.

Head Coach: Steve Uriev
Manager/CEO: Ivan Moneybags
Domestic Clubs: Torpedo, Rockets, Tigers and Waves (Yes, there were a lot of jokes in Shofercia when Torpedo defeated Rockets in the finals.)

Style modifier + 5

If my opponent RPs first, they may:

Godmod injuries: nothing serious, and I get to determine when he recovers
Godmod other events: TG me first

THE FLAMING EAGLES' JOURNEY
by Mico Toledo

The Flaming Eagles of Sangti (Aguilas de Fuego, Nagliliyab na Agila, Pleyming Igels) will make its debut in the 21st edition of the World Cup of Hockey at the Equestrian States. Headed by the Parto clan (4 of them in the NT roster), the Sangtians will hope to make an impact in the international ice hockey stage. The Flaming Eagles (UR) is in Group 8, along with Michael VII (8), Darmen (14), Alexandr Land (44), Carsatoga (UR) and Soviet-German Dortmund (UR).

Schedule
MD1 - @ Carsatoga
MD2 - vs Alexandr Land
MD3 - @ Darmen
MD4 - vs Michael VII
MD5 - @ Soviet-German Dortmund
MD6 - vs Carsatoga
MD7 - @ Alexandr Land
MD8 - vs Darmen
MD9 - @ Michael VII
MD10 - vs Soviet-German Dortmund

---

The Flaming Eagles might wear normal black jackets in their visit to Carsatoga. The kit provider of Sangti in the Ice Hockey NT, Vulpine Sportif has not yet released the jersey of Sangti, so for the meantime, white and black jackets with the print "SANGTI" will be used until the kit maker company releases the jersey. Jonas Cabangbang said, "It's a shame to wear an unofficial jersey at the opening of the World Cup of Hockey, but this happens, so mitigating measures are to be made."

---

How did the Parto clan made prowess in Sangtian hockey? In Isla Nespa, there is a hockey club that is named "Nespa Partos", and consist of entirely - the Parto Clan. They announce challenges among the Sangtians in the entirety of Sangti and they visit the luxurious island just to get a beating from the Partos. Now, the Partos tour the entire Sangti - from Ramo to Pesgem to Tiagosan, and they demolished local clubs there with a margin of 20 or more. That's devastating! There was one time a Sangtian delegate team consisted of... a roster of Partos. Since their surnames are the same (Not to mention the coaching staff... too), no names are imprinted at their jerseys. That was the past, nowadays , few Partos are in the National Team, but a future hockey team from Nespa will demolish oppositions.

VauganiaSportsToday

The Shake-Up Shakedown

With Tomas Alexander now at the helm of Team Vaugania, things have changed quite a bit and the roster doesn't look too much like Michael Dubinski's. Below we have our shakedown and explanation for the whole shake-up.

Forward Line 1: Goulding-Burns-Streit (C)

The top forward line hasn't been touched much. Burns will still be taking the face-offs with Max Goulding on his left flank. The one difference is Jurgis Streit. He is a very productive 26 year old whose sweater was graced by an "A" in WCoHs 19 and 20. With longtime leader Tomas Alexander coaching the team, he has earned a promotion from the 2nd line to the 1st as well as the responsibility of bearing the "C".

All three of them are great skaters and will likely be doing a good deal of goal scoring throughout the tournament. Goulding has been known to get a little physical when the situation calls for it. Burns is the team's top faceoff man and Streit is just a great player. He is probably the best skater of the three and he has excellent stick handling. The PIMs will be low for this line.

Forward Line 2: Avramenko-Patrick-Vrubel

Wilhelm Patrick is still the center of this second line. However, with the absence of Zacarias Perch and Jurgis Streit's promotion to the 1st line, Tomislav Avramenko and Santeri Vrubel are coming up from the third line to fill the void.

This line is full of two-way players. All three are capable of scoring, but maybe not at the capacity of the top line. When opposing teams push back, these guys are on the job. Wilhelm Patrick will give up his body to stop a shot and if the puck gets anywhere near Avramenko or Vrubel, you can be sure the puck will be cleared with haste.

Forward Line 3: Hermansen-Boehler-DesLauriers

The third line consists of Jarle Hermansen, promoted from the 4th line to make way for two newcomers, at left wing, Chris Boehler once again taking the faceoffs, and youthful newcomer, Adam DesLauriers.

A team's third line is often considered it's checking line. That would hold to be somewhat true if you took a look at Hermansen and Boehler. Though both of them are more offensive than you would think a player on the checking line is, Adam DesLauriers isn't what you would consider checking line material at all. He is only in his third year of play in the Vauganian Hockey League, but is an extremely fast skater with a knack for scoring goals and stick handling. He is at least 2nd line talent, but his inexperience keeps him on the 3rd line.

Forward Line 4: Stroman-Knight-Smirnov

For the past 2 WCoH's Volya Stroman has been at the helm of the 4th line. Things have changed this time around with him on the left wing. At center is recent college graduate, Colin Knight, and young Pavel Smirnov is on the right wing.

This line is the embodiment of an "energy line". All players are still early in their careers and haven't seen a decline in any abilities. They will give other teams a hard time with their quick style of play. It was somewhat of a shock when coach Alexander announced Colin Knight on the roster. As of now, he has no experience in the Vauganian Hockey League. His most recent team is the Sorochuk Mining Institute whom he led to a Frozen Four birth in the first edition of the NSCAA's ice hockey tournament. He is an excellent forechecker and will keep the puck in the opponent's zone. There was a similar reaction to Pavel Smirnov who only has two years of pro experience. His style of play is much like that of Knight's. Most of the scoring done by this line will likely involve getting chances off of rebounds.

Defensive Pair 1: Moravec (A)-Gilmour

Rolf Moravec is now bearing an "A" for the third straight WCoH. He is now joined by veteran Ted Gilmour rather than Philip Sorenson.

Moravec is a great two way defender. He is solid on defense as a defenseman should be, but also has fluid skating and the ability to put goals on the board. Though he doesn't wear the "C", he is still a vital leader to the national team. Ted Gilmour was brought in to be somewhat of a bodyguard for the rest of his teammates. Many doubted that the 36 year old would be able to play at the level necessary to be a player on the national team, but he has proven himself time and time again. He has a wicked, but not always accurate, slapshot to go along with his bruising style of play. People are looking to him to be a key player in the tournament.

Defensive Pair 2: Holmstrom-Beran (A)

This is the most offensive of the 3 defensive pairings for the Golden Eagles. Holmstrom is in the same place he was last WCoH, but Beran has been promoted from the 3rd pair and has been granted an "A" due to good play.

Holmstrom is an offensive defenseman. While he is a decent man on defense, he is more talented in the art of shooting. He has a highly accurate slapshot that makes him one of the first guys you would want to see at the blue line. Beran has also shown a talent in scoring, but he is also a heavy hitter. He will give up his body time and time again to help his team in times of trouble.

Defensive Pair 3: Jameson-Sorenson

The third defensive pair still contains Bill Jameson, but it now includes Philip Sorenson who previously worked on the 1st pair. He fell down to the 3rd pair in order to spread talent throughout all 3 pairs.

Jameson is primarily defensive and focuses his efforts on keeping pucks out of the Vauganian net rather than putting it in to the opposition's. Sorenson is a complement to Jameson's style. He is an offensive D-man who works on his skating and shooting as opposed to the physical aspect of hockey.

Goalies: Howard-Fedetenko

Craig Howard will once again be starting for the Golden Eagles, but Olli Fedetenko has beaten out Thor Vacek in the team selection trials this time around.

Craig Howard is a great goalie with two WCoH's of experience under his belt. He has now come to understand what is necessary for victory and has been training for it ever since. Behind him is Olli Fedentenko. He is an older goalie at 30 years of age, but he is the right man to give Howard a break from time to time and would be perfectly capable of taking over for Craig should something bad happen such as injury. Overall, the Golden Eagles have a sloid battery of goaltenders with them.

The Pony Republic of Equestrian States
National Ice Hockey Team - World Cup of Hockey 21

Team Background
The Equestrian States national ice hockey team doesn't really deserve the rank it currently has. From WCoHs 18-20, the nation was "represented" by a team of criminals from a maximum security prison, entered illegally by several National Equestrian Sports Council members after the NESC refused to provide funding for a sport which it viewed as unnecessary. For three tournaments, this illegal team competed in the WCoH, their existence being kept secret in an extensive cover-up.

However, the secret was uncovered recently during the Swamp Soccer World Cup. While a few Equestrian runners participated in a several races in Saintland, a couple of equine tourists acquired a newspaper that listed the Equestrian States as a participant in the Swamp Soccer World Cup. This came as news to the Equestrians, who were unaware that such an event existed, much less involved an Equestrian team. A quick investigation into the matter led the two ponies to contact the Equestrian government about an illegal team at about the same time that it was discovered that roughly 20 or so changelings were missing from Alcloptraz Maximum Security Prison in a surprise inspection.

Investigators confirmed that the "Equestrian States" team at the SSWC was in fact composed of the missing prisoners, and a squad of Equestrian soldiers was dispatched to recapture them. During the mission to recapture the changelings (shortly after the team was eliminated from that tournament by Saintland), several soldiers were wounded and a number of corrupted guards escorting the changelings around were killed. The discovery of corruption within the NESC has led to several Parliamentary inquiries into the body to find just how deep the tunnels of deceit lie.

Early investigation revealed the team present in the Icemark for the SSWC also "represented" the Equestrian States in the World Cup of Hockey. Deeply embarrassed by the illegal team's activities, the NESC Executive Board (or at least the few members still free of corruption and bribery charges) released an apology. However, the Board also submitted a quickie bid for the Equestrian States to host the next running of the tournament, expecting a better-equipped nation to also bid and be selected as the host of the playoff stage. The bid was less of an earnest attempt to win the hosting rights, and more of a statement of interest in repairing ties between the Equestrian States and the world of international hockey.

Unfortunately, no other nation did so and the Equestrian States was selected to host the 21st World Cup of Hockey. Caught off-guard by the announcement and still recovering from the financial burdens of the 6th Market Cup being hosted in the 'States, the NESC has been forced to not only finance a team to enter the WCoH, but also to somehow put together the venues needed to host the event. With the now-official national team still untested (though they have been forced to keep the ranking earned by the changelings - a remarkable 10th in the world), they will face off against some of the world's best in their official debut.

Roster
Ice hockey isn't exactly the most popular sport in the Equestrian States. In fact, it's not even in the top ten for the largest attendance draws (falling even behind the perpetually pathetic Handball League). To assemble their national team roster, the NESC looked to the Equestrian Ice Hockey League for players. The EIHL includes some of the most non-equine players of any sport league in the Equestrian States, and the roster of the national team reflects this well.

Strategy & Lines
Teams in the EIHL generally are more focused on finesse and speed than others, but with several major exceptions. Thus, the Equestrian States national team will play a more attacking style than their competitors. The defense will look to pass the puck forward and keep it out of the Equestrian zone to minimize the chances opponents will get. Goaltending isn't exactly a strong suit for the Equestrian States, so keeping the shots against to a lower number is a definite priority.

Team Staff
As expected by most of the few EIHL analysts out there, the head coaching job went to Nate Long, making him the first human to earn a head coach's position on an Equestrian national team for any sport. Long has earned his job through repeatedly dominating his rival (Bruiser) in "Coach of the Year" awards voting. But that's probably because the award is voted upon by the players, and Bruiser certainly has a personality to match his name, being an EIHL Hall of Fame defensepony.

Head Coach - Nate Long (Human - Male) - 49 - Fairflanks North Stars (Head Coach)
Assistant Coach - Bruiser (Earth Pony - Male) - 46 - Everfree Fire (Head Coach)

Home Arena

Image

Name: Canterlot Ice Arena
Location: Canterlot, Equestrian States
Capacity: 7,525
Short Description: One of the few purpose-built larger-capacity ice hockey arenas in the Equestrian States, the Canterlot Ice Arena is relatively new when compared to the older multi-purpose arenas in the nation. The arena is expected to undergo extensive renovations in preparation for the playoff stage of the tournament, which will expand it's capacity to something more befitting of the Equestrian national team and the WCoH 21 final. Canterlot Ice Arena is located on the outskirts of the Equestrian capital city, but is still easily accessible to visitors staying downtown Canterlot's higher-class hotels via the train. It's not ideal, perhaps, but it's the best the Equestrian States can offer for the group stage.

Saturday, June 8: Atelia vs. Slembana
Sunday, June 9: Mangolana vs. Atelia
Monday, June 10: Atelia vs. Sovetskya
Tuesday, June 11: Mohawk Clans vs. Atelia

It is yet to be seen who has won any of these matches but as a new entrant into the world scene of sports the Atelian Ulaans will undoubtedly have many troubles in the upcoming games however they will certainly try to make good first impressions on the world stage. Fortunately the majority of teams in our group are either also new or did not do particularly well in previous tournaments however the Minnows of Mapletish secured a spot as number 4 last World cup of course there is no reason as to why they wont make it but we will try to make it through the other slots but in any match between the Ulaans and the Minnows is going to be very tough and infact our first match of the season is already our Ulaans on an away game in Mapletish so it is wise for us all to hope that our first match is not a crushing defeat and that even if it is not to let it also be a crushing blow to our national spirit. Glory to Atelia may we show other peoples of the world the power of our furry union!

Vilita & Turori Ice Cat Things

The Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat's Hockey club step into World Cup of Hockey 21 Qualifying knowing they will need an upset or two to ensure their place in the playoff round.

Having been drawn in Group 10 against eventual World Cup of Hockey finals host Equestrian States, Vilita & Turori will have the opportunity to compete for a place in the top 2 if they can split results with either Equestrian States of 19th ranked Mantwenic.

After some back and forth, it has been agreed that Vilita & Turori enter the 21st World Cup of Hockey as the 30th ranked national entity in the multiverse.

However, some may feel the ranking does not do justice to the quality that can be found on the Vilita & Turori roster.

Hockey in Vilita & Turori has been on the resurgence after the re-establishment of the professional hockey league in Vilita.

It all stems back to the 4th Atlantian Oceania Hockey Cup which was held in Vilita & Turori. Having not been a huge Hockey playing nation previously, Turori was looking to get involved in entering a joint bid/playing venture with their Vilitan neighbors who already had an organized league system - although it had settled into more of an amateur status.

Confidence was abound, however, and Vilita & Turori were confident in their ability to win the tournament on their home turf. It was not to be as the Andossa Se Mitrin Vega Ice Dragons stole the show in the final to lift their first Hockey Championship.

The defeat was a real eye-opener in the Vilitan hockey community and it didn't take long for the Vilitan Ice Hockey League to be re-promoted back to a professional level of status and organization. In addition to the re-recognition as a professional sporting league, new teams were introduced to help fuel development throughout the Islands.

The Seraai Icestronauts would take advantage of the rich sporting culture that had developed in Seraai after the rise of Lunar Park as a go-to destination for International Football - having hosted the Cup of Harmony Final and a pair of UICA finals in just a short time period.

The biggest move, however, was expansion to the Island Emirate. In conjunction with the construction of a brand new Grand Prix circuit and Association Football stadium in a new community dubbed 'Eelandii' - midway between Almintora and Cednia, an indoor arena was built with hockey in mind. The Eelandii Explorers made their debut in the Vilaye Domestic League, planting the seed for the development of young Turorian talent.

While the new teams certainly didn't have much of an impact on the domination of established franchises like the Yeaddin Hockey Club and the Turoki Islanders, it certainly speaks volumes for the importance being placed on the sport throughout the Vilitan Cove.

Vilita & Turori will open their group stage campaign against unranked side Schmiegelland and will look to start off on the right foot with the victory that will certainly be needed to keep pace with the top 2. They won't have long to rest, however, before squaring off with the group favorites and tournament hosts the Equestrian States.

The Eel-Cats will have 10 matchdays to accumulate enough points to reach the top spots and a place in the final elimination phase. Should they fail, it will be a massive step back for the sport in the Cove and put huge doubts on Vilita & Turori's likelihood of competing for the coveted Atlantian Oceania Hockey Cup V Championship

Giroux Enquirer - WCoH, the Road Ahead

With Stretta now starting their journey to the World Cup of Hockey, and hopefully victory, The Giroux Enquirer have your complete guide to what lays ahead.

The Strettan team appear in good shape during practice, with no injuries to report. Mantello and Mason have seen limited participation, but this is nothing to worry about.

Group Match 1: @Quakmybush
Another unranked team, Quakmybush play a very attacking form of hockey. Key to victory: Stretta will be looking to utilise their slightly more defensive skills to seek opportunities on the break and score well.

Group Match 2: @Plutoni
Overall 2nd seed, this will be a very hard game to get a foothold in. Key to victory: Try not to pick fights with the robots. Survive the match, and look for victory elsewhere.

Group Match 3: Northern Sunrise Islands
The first home game, Stretta will be looking big. Overall seed 21, The Stars are known for their blistering speed on the ice. Key to victory: Force errors and stay out of the penalty box. They have weaknesses that if exploited will open up the whole team.

Group Match 4: @The Fair Republic
Little is known on this team, who are also unranked. Key to victory: Play a good match, and guage their defense well. Victory here could mean a lot for Strettan chances in the group stage as a whole.

Group Match 5: Estope
A team with a solid defense. Key to victory: Playing on the break when they finally emerge could open them up. Alternatively, baiting fights may give the extra-man advantage.

Group Match 6-10
By now, we should have a good idea of who we are facing. The final stretch of the group stage sees more home games for Stretta, so taking morale from the home crowd will be beneficial.

OOC: I'm probably not going to have sufficient time to RP for MD2, but fortunately I saved this as a draft yesterday just in case. I will cover the games against Valanora and Quebec in tomorrow's RP.

Introduction

Saintland is an island nation, located in the vicinity of the north pole. No other landmass exists within a thousand miles of Saintland. This guide will cover everything you need to know about the Kingdom of Saintland, its Church and its customs. While Saintland may appear to be a tiny, insignificant island with just half a million or so inhabitants and a culture stuck in the Middle Ages, it is actually one of the more fascinating nations in the multiverse.

The Kingdom of Saintland was founded in 966. In 965, the then-unified Christian Church held a council. At this now-forgotten council, they discussed some arcane detail of Christology. Records of the Council of 965 no longer exist and it is unknown what exactly they discussed, but a number of bishops and nobles throughout Christendom were upset by whatever the Council decided. They knew that they could not say so openly, but the bishops had been the minority faction at the Council. They knew that they were right about the nature of their Savior. They communicated with one another through letters, eventually deciding to convince their family members to flee with them to a remote island. Forcing their serfs to go with them, these nobles and their brothers and sons that had been consecrated as bishops acquired several longships from ethnic Vikings and they fled on these ships to a remote island near the north pole. A Prince of one of the nations of Christendom chose to go with them. He was anointed as King Paulus I of Regnvm Sanctvsterra, the Kingdom of Saintland. One of the bishops was elected as the Patriarch of the True Church of Iesus Christus, commonly known as the Church of Saintland. He took the name of Petrus I, in honor of the rock upon which Iesus had originally built his Church.

Saintland remained isolated for centuries, yet somehow was able to keep pace with the rest of the world in technological development. In 1788, isolation was finally ended, but Saintland remained firmly in the Middle Ages. In 1825, King Josephus X, who is regarded by most Sanctii as their greatest King, freed the serfs and broke the power of the nobility. The King has become sick of the nobility's constant interference. He also recognized that most foreign nations had abolished serfdom and begun industrializing. He decided that he could end serfdom and get the common people to support him against the nobles while strengthening his Kingdom's economy. It was a controversial decision at the time, but eventually the King was able to eliminate the nobility in all but name.

Today, Saintland is an absolute monarchy. King Paulus XV has absolute power in his realm, so long as he stays on the good side of the Church. The King's Government engages in administrative tasks, but the King makes all the important decisions. The Church of Saintland is heavily involved in the governance of the Kingdom. The Church insists that morality be upheld. This means that it is the job of the King's Government to enforce laws against sins. The Church also considers both capitalism and communism to be immoral, so the King is required to adopt a third way in economics.

Saintland's climate is very cold throughout much of the year. During the winter months, Saintland is covered with snow on a constant basis. The climate in Saintland, combined with their traditional ways, produces a very tough people. Sanctii, by living in their Kingdom, develop a very high tolerance for pain and physical discomfort. It is considered unmanly to complain about pain or being uncomfortable in the Kingdom and that is something no Sanctii wants to be considered. This is probably a major reason why the Kingdom of Saintland produces so many world-class athletes despite its tiny population.

The Kingdom of Saintland consists of a number of communities. The largest of those is the "city" of St. Paulus, which has between 50 and 60 thousand inhabitants. St. Petrus is the capitol of Saintland. Its population is between 15 and 20 thousand people. The "town" of St. Augustinus is also notable for being the home of Saintland's most prestigious university. The University of St. Augustinus was founded in 1243 and has educated the best and brightest young men in the Kingdom for nearly 800 years.

Visitors to Saintland may arrive in the Kingdom by ship or plane. If you take a ship, you will most likely dock in St. Paulus Harbor. However, if you travel by plane, you may fly into the airport in either St. Petrus or St. Paulus. Regardless of which airport you enter, all visitors should expect to be searched by Customs, which is a branch of the Royal Army of Saintland, for contraband and should be prepared to identify themselves to authorities. It is highly recommended, although not required, to carry a passport from your home nation before entering Saintland. If you do not have a passport and attempt to enter Saintland, the authorities may regard you as a citizen. That would not be considered desirable by most travelers, as foreigners in Saintland are not required to attend weekly Church services. The authorities also make some allowances for foreigners that fail to follow Saintland's numerous arcane laws that would not be made for a citizen. Sapient non-humans that attempt to enter Saintland without a passport could risk being treated as animals by Sanctii authorities, so it is highly recommended that any non-human that visits Saintland carry a passport.

Recently, King Paulus XV outlawed ownership of automobiles for personal use. Use of automobiles is now restricted to the police, the military and licensed bus and/or taxi services. Travel between communities in Saintland is done via high-speed rail. In the larger communities, buses and taxis are available.

Lonely Multiverse highly recommends that anybody who wishes to travel to Saintland read our entire guide cover-to-cover. Saintland's laws are highly unusual and their punishments for violating those laws are Draconian. It can be very hazardous indeed to travel to Saintland, if one is unfamiliar with the Kingdom's customs. Read on in our approx guide and discover more about the Kingdom of Saintland...

With the Ice Bisons set to make their sixth trip to the World Cup of Hockey, one has to wonder... Will we ever hoist the Champions Cup?

Kad Skirata, Head Coach for the Gyatso-kai National Team, has repeated promised that each edition, the Ice Bisons would clime higher into the final standings. However, that seems to be an impossible promise to fulfil, seeing as how in our very first appearance the Ice Bisons beat out World Cup favourite Cotdelapoms 1-nil to secure a Third-Place finish. The next World Cup, faced with a very odd performance, the Ice Bisons couldn't even make it out of Qualifying; winning just one game, Skirata and the boys would go home with a 1-3-3 record.

Not wanting to disappoint, the Ice Bisons came back in World Cup XVII, silencing every critic with an eventual 5-4 victory over then-number one Valanora. It was a year to celebrate, for the Ice Bisons would then participate in the Coupe Pomme D'Or, an invitational tournament hosted by the World-Champion Apples of Cotdelapoms. Topping the host in both an off-season friendly as well as the tournament itself, it seemed as though the Ice Bisons were set to take over the World in World Cup XIX.

Then the Lockout came...

Killing the entirety of the 2012.3 season, the Lockout would see the Ice Bisons enter World Cup XIX unprepared, falling again in the Quarterfinals to Birolika in two matches without even a single goal; losing on home ice 5-nil, and then away 3-nil. Disappointment would only continue, as the Lockout lasted through the 2012.4 season and into the 2013.1 season, with World Cup XX falling right between the two. The Ice Bisons coasted through the Group Stage in the Twentieth Edition in Kelssek, maintaining a pristine 7-nil-nil record: However, facing Michael VII would prove to be the untimely demise of a promising team, seeing the World Cup dreams destroyed in a 2-nil match at home.

Heartbreak...

Now with the Lockout finally ended, the Ice Bisons look to World Cup XXI with rejuvenated spirits. Though the 2013.2 Season of the Avatarian Hockey League is far from over, the boys are all in top-form, and with a very fortunate draw in Group Two, this may just be the year of the Ice Bison.

Stay tuned for more of our Journey to the Top!

Host Announcement

Scores for MD1 have now been posted. Something came up and I was unable to finish plugging the numbers into xkoranate before having to rush out the front door. To accommodate any inconveniences caused by the delay, tomorrow's cutoff will be on the latter end of my scheduled window, at about 6:00 PM EDT.

Additionally, it should be noted that the RPs from Stretta, Saintland, and Gyatso-kai were graded and factored into the MD1 results.

Aquitayne Takes First Win in the 21st World Cup of Hockey!

Image

Defender Harrison Cannard scoring the final, and winning goal of the first match for Aquitayne in WCoH21.

Image

ARENA CENTER, Tursasia, ANN - Aquitayne takes its first win of the 21st Annual World Cup of Hockey in its first ever performance internationally, as well as its first within the tournament.

The game was gripping. Skaters from the Aquitaynian National Hockey League, and those who had taken up opportunities in foreign countries came together to put on a spectacle that could only be described as beautiful. The Aquitaynian National Team was one of only three Unranked teams within their Pool (Pool 9 of 10), as well as having a heavy contender - Kelssek, ranked number 6 overall - in their Pool. Aquitayne matches up against Kelssek next week, in what many in Aquitayne hope will become one of the biggest upsets in the Group Stage.

Aquitayne played a heavy and talented opponent at Arena Center today, facing off against the likewise unranked Tursasia team by a mere one goal. The main goalscoarers of the night were Geoffrey Seigler, #17 (C) at Left Wing, scoring two goals. The first goal was brought within the First Period, after two goals had already been scored by the Tursasian National Team.

The first goal against had been brought about during a line change at the 10th minute of play, with #10 weaving through the tired Aquitaynian defenders and scoring in a two-on-one play which not even the best goalie could have saved. The second shot came from #17, who gave a huge slapshot from just in front of the blue line, which deflected off of a skaters shin pads and flew right under the stick of Andre Badalamenti.

A few penalties were handed out during the second period, due to a large collision at center ice between Defender Patrick Hall and #20 of the Tursasian team, which left the Tursasian player slightly dazed for a few seconds. Thankfully, he was checked out and found to be okay, and continued play. Patrick Hall was given a 2 minute minor for rouging. On that power play, Tursasia would score its third goal of the game, due to an overload of Aquitaynian skaters on the right wing, allowing the Tursasian Left Winger, #28 to sneak in behind goaltender Andre Badalamenti and wrist shot the puck into the back of the net.

Image
We wanted
them to believe
they had the game in
the bag. Let their
guard down.
That's when we
let them know who's
really in control.
The scoreboard would remain 3-2 in Tursasia's favor until the third period, where things would very intensely begin to heat up.
Tursasia would score in the opening minutes of the third period, projecting a semblance of power and control over the newcoming Aquitaynian National Team. It looked almost as if the Aquitaynian team had given up, but later at a press conference, Head Coach Holden Molotsky stated, "we wanted them to believe they had the game in the bag. Let their guard down. That's when we let them know who was really in control." It was a risky tactic, but it worked out marvelously. Aquitayne would come back from their 2 goal deficit to capture two goals within ten minutes of the final Tursasian goal of the match. The third goal was scored by Center Matthew Thakkar (A) in the 11th minute, followed by a brutal slapshot from Right Wing Aksel Ness, which sped past the Tursasian goaltender's glove before he even had time to see it. With the game tied, the clock wound down into the final five minutes of play, and it looked almost as if the tournament opener would end in a draw.

However, in an unprecedented play, Defender Harrison Cannard took matters into his own hands, becoming a Striker for part of the match. After a bad hit, Left Wing Neil Gram was in the sinbin for a 2 minute roughing penalty. Because of this, Aquitayne was down a man, Tursasia had the advantage, and with no more than 5 minutes of play, the game seemed lost. In the midst of this however, during a Tursasian rush for the Aquitaynian blue-line, Defender Neil Gram intercepted a pass at mid-ice, causing the Tursasians to turn around - but they were too late.

Cannard was already speeding towards the Tursasian net, in a one-on-one showdown for the victory of the match. The clock was winding down to 2 minutes of gameplay left, and this almost shootout-like contingency would decide it all. Cannard only sped up as he closed in on the net, weaving his stick to the left and right of his body, maneuvering the puck around with skill built up from decades of play. As he neared the goalie, he swung the stick out wide to his right, faking a wrist shot which prompted the goalie to go down for a save, only to bring it back wide to his left and wrist it right into the upperdeck of the back of the net. Beautiful skill from a senior player of the team.

Thus, the game was sealed at Aquitayne 5 to Tursasia's 4. This put Aquitayne at 2nd in Pool 9's ranking, only to be outdone by a 4-0 victory by Kelssek, the next opponent Aquitayne will be facing in the 21st World Cup of Hockey. It will undoubtedly be an exciting game, and one that will definitely require a new chapter in the record books. Aquitayne plays at home tomorrow, at 5:00 TST.

Tommy's Blog

As you know it was my plan today to watch the game on television today, but, and this is a big but, I tried to make my own nachos and I had the bowl of cheese in my hand while I was trying to set up my television to record the game a day in advance, and suddenly my hand slipped, and the bowl was out my hand, cracked against the television, and hot cheese went everywhere faster than an electronic two-year-old. And yes, the television melted, yes. I was lucky enough to be able to get to the game though. Let's go into detail about my trip, shall we?

I first arrived in Albertville, Neu Engollon this morning around 6 AM. Beautiful airport, nice flight attendents, until I got to customs. "Stop right there," said a man at customs. I had to stop so they could search me to see if I was smuggling anything. They look down my shirt, in my shoes, in my socks, down my pants(which made me feel violated), in my backpack, and even under my watch. But they never thought to look in my watch where I carried a half-ounce of marijuanachocolate. The customs said I could go through and so I did. I went out to wait for the cab that was suppose to take me and my friends to our hotel, eventually it came and we went on. Not long after, a man turned up 'round our way. He had a moustache, and he told us that he was an inspector. He said he wasn't going to inspect us, he was going to inspect our tickets. So he went creepy-crawly over to my pocket and stuff his great, big hand into it. "Great scott!" I shouted. Then, I was out the street, into the hotel, faster than a rolled-up goldfish.

Later that evening, we went out to the game. When we got to Albertville Arena, we had to go through security. Seems reasonable. "Stop right there," said the man at secuirty. They checked my backpack, which had nothing in it expect a few bottles of Crocoaide and Energyade and BlueBull. "Alright then, go on," the man said. We eventually made it to our seats and the game was fantastic! I posted the scoring summary below. After the game, I decided to see if I could meet with some of the players. We made our way down to the visitor locker room, I was suprised that security allowed us to go down there, but seeing as we hadn't caused any trouble and we were visitors, what the heck? Not long after, the players left the locker room to hed back to the busses. I got to breifly talk to Alexei, who told me that my brother David looked like a bag of hamsters. Well! I later got to talk to Mathias who, for some reason, told me in a singsong voice "Clear the flaff out from under your bed, clear the flaff out from under your bed!". Dontknowaboutthat.

I did, however, get to meet Cassidy and Jessica. Yeeaah, it was time to fuck about. While I was talking to them, I noticed Cassidy's breasts, they were huge! They were bigger than both my hands. *click* Noice. She caught me loking at them while I wasn't paying attention. Oh no! The moment I dread when she and Jessica go from being cheery to absolutely fucking furious. She beat me with an rolled-up comic, it was lovely! Actually, um, that wasn't very nice. Actually, it was horrible. I feel a bit sick actually. Buuttt, I still got to meet them. They're very nice too. I even got their autographs even after they beat me! Unfortunately, after the "incident" security tried to chase me throughout the stadium. HA! You can't catch me, I'm Murvin Alexander! Yes, that's my real name, yes. We got out and got a cab back to our hotel. And everything was loveley once again, wondeful, then we went home.

Well, that was a lengthy story, I managed to kill thirty minutes just typing it out. But anyways, they game was good. Glad to see that some of the rookies got to score. We kind of need to work on our defense more, but we're still a young team, we'll grow out of it eventually. Anyways, here's the scoring summary:

Quite a good game from both sides I should say. But hopefully this win doesn't get into our heads, because we play Gyatso-kai next. Who's a huge threat to our defense, however, their defense didn't seem to well since they only beat Ko-oren 3-2. But that's nothing to believe, they could be bluffing. Would you believe it?! They're hussling us. Gah, we I post here tomorrow they're gonna die, I swear, swear I will!

From the Journal of Useless Research, purveyor of H-R Star Of The Game Diagrams, comes some all-new science!

We observe a variety of individuals self-reporting incidence of "playoff fever."

Symptoms include:
-increased heart rate, excitation
-high levels of stress
-a tendency towards eating fattening food, which can be unhealthy

Confusingly, elevated body temperature is not always a symptom of playoff fever, although some individuals may report references to "riding hot streaks." Blowing the nose is also not associated with this fever, though it may be worth researching older case histories of small isolated groups waving handkerchiefs in the air for no otherwise apparent reason.

This fever frequently recurs, and is moderately contagious.

Epidemiology:
Playoff fever can strike humans of all ages, genders*, and ethnicities. It appears to be somewhat inheritable, though we suspect this is due more to shared environmental than genetic factors. Further research may be required.

Duration:
Playoff fever can last for several weeks at a time, although longitudinal studies suggest that it may be lengthening to up to a month or two in extreme cases and that this tendency has only exascerbated with time.

Comorbidity:
Playoff fever frequently gives way to feelings of letdown, or alternatively brief and distracting euphoria.

Treatment:
As of yet, no effective treatment has been found for playoff fever. Clinical trials are made difficult because it is very different to separate individuals into randomized groups for testing. Many variables make it difficult to eliminate confounding effects. In particular, geographic distribution of potential test subjects is correlated, though imperfectly, with self-reported feelings of emotion known as "team attachment," and this influences how the fever develops.

*The only demographic difference worth noting is that, in some men, playoff fever can give way to atypical patterns of facial hair growth.

Your News, Our Way!

Qazox lucks into 4-1 win.

GAL 010 1
QZX 220 4

Seriouly, I have no idea how Qazox won that game. 4 goals against Galnius? I think someone was paid off there, and I'm looking at you Harold Thomas of Galnius! How else can you explain how the IceWolves scored more than once? It was like Galnius had a team of rookies that were making their international debuts or something. But we know that every team has played at least once before, or else they can't play in the WCoH. So despite Ivan Mzachinov's goals in the 1st and 2nd periods; Doug Morris's fluke goal that opened up the scoring and Nathan Holsten's lucky shot in the 2nd; Qazox allowed Alex Ommegio to score. Thomas Jekin.. you plain suck in net. Up next, Qazox will mightily struggle as they travel to Rovegia.

SCORING SUMMARY:
Morris- Fluke (5:01 1st)
Mzachinov- Lucky Bounce off of Thomas' blocker. (9:15 1st)
Mzachinov- Kicked in by William Cheses. (13:05 2nd)
Ommegio- Made Jekin look like a kitten trying to stop a freight train. (16:34 2nd)
Holsten- Thomas blinked at the wrong time. (18:42 2nd)

The 30th-ranked Ice Knights played well in what was a 7-4 win over unranked Sjovenia. The Ice Knights, starting their Group Stage play in home, poised to make it past the group stage this time. On their last WCoH, they lost their ticket when Svengarda beat them 2-1 at the very last match, thanks to a goal at the very last minute. Still bitter from it, the team vowed to play well as they entered the stage.

Well, they kinda did, but in more of Jekyll-and-Hyde fashion.
On the 1st Period, they seemed little bit shaky in their defense as they took stupid penalties and allowed many giveaways. Ice Knights took a penalty just 15 seconds into the match, with Alexandre Kanibaweeke sent off to the penalty box for a slashing call on the Sjovenian 1st line center. That centre a minute later scored in a powerplay goal. And that's what happened for next 10 minutes. Spearing, slashing, roughing, hooking-you name it, a Knights player was sent off for it. By the halfway through the 1st Period, 11 times an Ice Knight was sent off, totalling 49 minutes in penalties. The game was severely in the disadvantage to the Quebecois that it was far embarrassing for many to watch.
"It was just disappointing, for that first 10 minutes," commented Jacques Roux, a local citizen in attendance at Colisee de Quebec. "Like there's no way that anyone would not be embarrassed and disgusted at the fact that for 3 times, a 1-5 ice situation occurred. It was miraculous that they did not score more than 7 within that 10 minutes."
Yes. It was miraculous, Jacques. But it was still embarrassing.
By the middle of first period, Ice Knights were trailing behind 3-0. The 18,900 Quebecois fans attendance were certainly not happy about this, as they started to boo their team wildly and throw things at the ice. It wasn't pretty, of course and it took about 30 minutes before the game resumed.
While the game was stopped to clear the ice, Cadance Edwards-Molsson, the starter of the night, was pulled out of the game in favour of 24-year old Henry Power. This was rather surprising as Etienne Park was expected by many to substitute the 28-year old St. John's Celtics Goaltender. At the same time, Coach Gilfoyle quickly showed his players the changes of game plan and strategies, to play more physically.
"It was necessary. Those guys were kept being outdueled and showed some flaws, so some changes were needed with our styles of play and strategies." commented Coach Gilfoyle on his brief talk at the Hockey Night in Quebec.

Fortunately, the Knights rebounded well. During the next 10 minutes of the period, they managed to cut their lead to one. The first goal arrived when Sylvain Turcotte, the 3rd-line Right Wing, used his speed to break through 3 players and shot. The shot was bounced off by the goaltender's pads, but Dave Clark quickly scored from the rebound. Not long after, an accidental giveaway by the Sjovenian defenseman allowed Colm Strojovic to quickly skate across the ice before scoring in what was one-timer slapshot.
By the end of the 1st period, the score was 3-2. By then, however, the tide was in favour of the Ice Knights.

The 2nd Period started with a fight between Logan Guthrie and a Sjovenian enforcer in the 27th second into the play. However, it ended too quickly as Guthrie litterally manhandled him and knocked him out cold, on the ice. While Guthrie was sent to the penalty box(aka. his diner, which is because of his habit of eating Udon in the Penalty box) for a fighting major, the crowd was now in a positive mood and wildly cheered.
At 1:20 into the match, the Ice Knights managed to even it up by intercepting a pass, then putting it in the upperdeck of back of the net with his classic wristshot. The crowd lit up with joy.

And the rest of the match is history. Ice Knights dominated the game in every aspects, scoring 4 more goals.
The defence, while showed some problems with chemistry and passing, was still able to cheapshot, fight(recording a national team-record of 17 Fight majors in a single match) and injure 7 players along the way, 4 of whose journey for their WCoH was ended immediately. It was almost perfect, spectacular 45 minutes for the Ice Knights, with only the Sjovenian goal on the last minute spoiling the joy.
On goaltending, Henry Power performed brilliantly, saving 34 out of 35 shots on the net. He clearly performed way above the expectations and skepticism. Expect him to take more starting job in this cycle of WCoH and in future.

The Ice Knights are now 1-0-0 and sits in the 2nd place of the Group 7 of the Qualification Round. Now, they are off to Saintland, a nation well known for its oppression against non-Christians. From our database and match recap on its loss against Valanora, they tends to play much more physical style of playing.
For the next match, Team Q, in order to match that and intimidate them on the ice, needs to shut them down completely with their improved defense. If not, we might face the 2.0 Version of that 1st Period of the match and will disappoint hugely.
Hopefully, Coach Gilfoyle will put bounties on all the opposing players and instruct the Knights to backcheck, cheapshot and most importantly, fight them. By that way, the Sanctii will wear themselves out, giving Knights more chances to score.

The Moment of the Game: Dave Clark's 3rd Goal.

Polkopian National News brought to you by Mr. Yuri Borkechev

Original Translation

Polkopian Hockey Team Draws 2-2 Against Thatius, leaving it tied for position three in its group.

In a tough match against rival Thatius, the Polkopian National Hockey team did their country proud with a 2-2 draw against their opponents, leaving them tied for third place in their group. The Polkopian National Hockey team is one of four currently ranked teams in their group, securing the 36th rank in the world. The Polkopians had to face against Thatius, the 23rd ranked team in the world, and although the team was hoping for a win, they all believe that a draw works just as well.

"Maybe this [win] proves that the Polkopian team is not one to be ignored. We have a real shot at this! We can do it!" Said Polkopian offender, Roman Shotov, who was responsible for one goal and one assist this match. "We played a good game against a very good team, and we came out even." The team hopes to secure their first win against Byfugland's national team, who currently stands 9th place in the world. "If we can do it here, we can do it anywhere!" Said Jakob Rushov, yet another Polkopian offender.

Image
Ott Yarlov, in an attempt to score a second time

The first goal of the night was scored by Ott Yarlov of Polkopia, with an assist by Roman Shotov. The shot was passed beautifully in front of the net, and with a solid strike, found its way into the back of the net before the goalkeeper knew what was coming to him. The next goal came three minutes after, scored by the nation of Thatius' National Team, resulting in a 1-1 tie at the end of the first period. Within the first ten minutes of the second period, the players from Thatius were able to score yet again, taking the lead. Polkopia was unable to score within that period, and would not score until the middle of the third period, with a beautiful shot by Roman Shotov, who had already assisted Ott Yarlov with Polkopia's first goal.

Polkopians everywhere are eager for the next game, as it will surely test Polkopia's skill against a very good team. Will Polkopia be able to beat them? Or will the game end just like this one did, and result in a tie? Furthermore, will Polkopia lose the game? It all comes down to tomorrow's game against Byfugland.

The Icy Bench
"Sitting on the cold bench outside of the rink"

Five questions heading into the World Cup 21

World Cup 20 might have been a really sweet memory for every Mapletish hockey fan but for some good reason it was considered bitter as Michael VII defeated the Minnows in the all Southern Rushmori third place playoff. It was a dream run nonetheless and it certainly helped bring a level of pride for the country that it has rarely seen. More of a country that prices summer sports above winter sports, the nation's performances in ice-hockey has improved the popularity of the sport in Mapletish. Nonetheless, it all shows that the new head coach Faron Wilson is up to task, after the sport's major revamp. Now, there's a lot of question that are waiting to be answered right smack before the tournament begins, and hopefully, the Icy Bench will help answer them hopefully.

1) Who would pose the biggest threat to the Minnows in Group 6?

Honestly speaking in terms of ranks, the team that would pose a threat to the Minnows' dominance in Group 6 would be in the form of Mohawk Clans whom the Minnows have played against in the previous World Cups, they proved to be tough to beat everywhere and they have a record of holding teams up and frustrating them till the last buzzer. Although they are a tough nut to crack, they do have a record of breaking down right at the end of matches and letting in goals. One should not underestimate the group despite their rankings because hidden beneath the rankings would be the utmost quality that these teams have shown throughout their journey. Slembana could have shown bits of toughness and should be wary of up to a certain degree at the very least.

2) How do you rate the team's chances of getting the third place as promised by Faron Wilson/

The team has been working very hard behind the scenes, with many of the players training extra hard this season with their respective clubs. It all comes to see that many of the players are not just aiming for the third place but for the finals to be exact. Notably, the players would want to make it a grand farewell for their longest serving player Wystan Colby who would be retiring after World Cup 21. Currently without a club, Colby would be playing with lesser pressure and would want a memorable journey in World Cup 21 to end off his long career. Basically, reaching the third place playoff would be more of a easier task now then never before with all of the experiences they have in the past few cups, but it would be better to go one step further and aim for the finals at the very least.

3) Who will replace long serving Wystan Colby?

A dangerous man in the middle, Colby would be hard to replace but eyes would be on Rad Nebu, the centre for Line two to take on the role as the leading centre man once Colby retires. Colby has always been on the faze for his crazy long range goals and fanciful free hit styles. Nebu would have huge shoes to fill but despite that, he seemed to be the best choice to replace Colby for now till a better and crazier player comes around.

4) It might seem stupid, but how do you rate the Minnows chances of raising the Cup for Rushmore?

For Rushmore you could say but it will be a difficult task for the Minnows here, more difficult than aiming for the finals. Chances are the Minnows would end up finishing second if they are not careful enough, previous records show that the Minnow hasn't really been consistent in form, a shock Round 2 appearance in their breakthrough season and in the second season, they failed to get past the group stage.

5) Something more Mapletish related, will Ice-hockey find its way into the Mapletish Games someday?

The Mapletish Games has been more on the summer side and the Mapletish Games Organising Committee would be looking to introducing the Winter Games to step up the competitiveness level. It wouldn't be long to find ice hockey in the Mapletish Games. Not in the Summer Games but in the Winter Games of course.

With the Ice Bisons visiting Ko-oren National Stadium, the team started off the Twenty-First World Cup of Hockey right with a 3-2 win away.

"Our offence played very well tonight," spoke Assistant Coach Kio Huangshun, "Add to it a stellar defence kepping the Ko-orenite team from making any goals in the third and our impressive goaltending, and you have one haran of a game."

'Impressive' is one word for Zhao Hotaka's game tonight: Facing twenty-one shots from the normally-defensive Ko-oren Greenblues, Zhao only let in two goals, both of which came on the powerplay. Unfornuately for the home team, the Ice Bisons were more on the offence, bringing three goals into the mix to settle the score.

"Playing such a defensive team is always a challenge for a team," spoke captain Hakoda Ishii, "Makes our job a little more difficult, which is always enjoyable."

Ishii had much to be proud of tonight, seeing as both goals in the third were his credit. Not to mention, the opening goal of the game, coming in at just 1:32, was thanks to young third-liner Kal Skirata, making this his 35th goal in just 55 appearances for the Ice Bisons. The first goal would come off an impressive steal deep in the Bisons' own zone, with Skirata making a breakaway dash; a quick series of deeks would see Dirugilau Leligujilen moving to the low right and Skirata shooting to the high left.

"Those are the kind of goals which just make a game; the ones where the netminder goes the complete opposite direction and you watch that net open wide," spoke Skirata during a first intermission interview.

The Greenblues would answer in the same period, with the power play from Ishii's hooking charge. Chun Jaragun would make a quick turnover on an attempted clear by Jiang Tujing, and bring it back catching the penalty kill unit off-guard. For an defensive team, they knew when to bring the offence.

In the second period, the Greenblues would make the early goal, with second-line Shejuchikh Biluthen making an impressive three-way pass into a goal on the high-sticking penalty against Sato Sorua. The third-line penalty kill was not prepared for the goal, something Kad'buir was sure to address in his Second Intermission address to the team. While the rest of the period would be a back-and-forth, no penalties were called as the teams were playing a cleaner game.

"Usually on the international stage," spoke Arnook Ishida after the game, "We tend to take more penalties due to the more aggressive nature of our game back home. Tends to take three or four games for us to 'clean-up' and get back into the style of 'clean international play'."

In the third, Ishii would strike gold with his two goals. The first goal, on a quick steal and pass by Tay'haai from the defensive pair of Hesarlu Mesumurgin and Kilu Telain, which would find Ishii on the opposite side of the net, a fast wrister would tie the game as Leligujilen struggled to right himself. The second goal of the period, and the game-winning one, would come from a fumble in the neutral zone by Eshti Teradi attempting to advance the puck. This fumble would give Ishii the puck, and a quick dash by one of the AHL's fastest players would bring him one-on-two with Leligujilen and Telain. However, agile puck handling skills would see Ishii bank hard left and send a quick shot right through Leliguijilen's five-hole.

And the next three minutes, the Ice Bisons simply rode the wave...

Preview: Matchday 02 vs 25Torisakia

Currently ahead in the standings due to a six-goal game, Torisakia will prove to be an interesting opponent; the most offensively-minded team in Group Two, the Bisons have to be set in their defence and able to strike back as often and more so.

ALBERTVILLE ARENA, RHONE CANTON
NEU ENGOLLON

He had taped up and helped on the warm up with the Ibex. He'd checked helmets and pads, changing some out that looked like they were no longer holding up. Samuel Deseaux, the team's trainer, watched as they hit the ice, frowning from his spot hanging at the boards. He had his bag on the floor, filled with first aid essentials, water and other necessities. There was no room on the benches, space being at a premium.

The attitude had not been right. Despite this being their debut in the World Cup and not having a professional major league, hockey was far from unpopular or unknown in the Confederacy. On top of that, they were in their home rink, Albertville Arena. They should have every reason to be fired up and gung ho, but still, the boys were anxious and negative, almost despondent in some cases. It was alarming and explained how the Torisakians were able to dominate the match, if not in points, in offensive play, taking advantage of several power plays and keeping the pressure on the net, manned by an overwhelmed Calvino Bassati. Eventually, two times the puck was sunk into the net in the first period, but halfway through, Primo was able to answer with a goal of the Ibex' own. As they briefly came to the boards to switch out some players and get a chewing by the coach, Samuel handed out the sportdrinks,

"Sammy, didja see that, we're gettin' creamed by ladies?!"

"Sammy...Coach, what's with the chicks!?"

Coach Le Houne snapped back, "Get yer cozzfickin' heads back in the game, ya schiessers! They won't be the only team we face with women, or even non-humans. You backwoods yahoos better git over it quick, we gotta game to win, here! These aren't yer little sisters, so don't be tiptoeing around them. Slam the merd outta 'em."

As they headed into the second period, it sunk in that they needed to step up their game. Not soon enough to stop Borodin, the Ice Bird Right Wing from slapping another one in. Remy and Val were able to answer though with their own goals. The Torisakians got lucky when the puck sailed by two defenders waists and bounced off Soltis' mask into the net. Had David Mastroni not knocked in one more, they would not be tied up 4 to 4 going into the final period. The Ibex were fighting for these goals, and convinced it was effortless for the Ice Birds.

Sammy watched with growing dread as the final goal went in before the buzzer, scored by, of course, a woman. He looked at Coach Nevin, anguished but resigned to save it for the next match, "Merd, I'm going to have console these big babies.
Bump mits and bring it in! OK...so, good fight. They are 25th ranked, gentlemen. So get over yourselves and pat yer selves on the backs. Ya put up a good fight. Next match, we gotta fly to Mobius to face TailsPrower. They, like us, are unranked. I expect ya to git yer heads out yer asses, boys. I don't want to be brushed over at the end of Magda Wertauer's sportscast. OK, clean up, we gotta fly out soon. No beerin' it up tonight, jackasses."
Sammy grabbed up gear and bottles, joining them in the locker room.

TeamPeriod 1Period 2Period 3OT
Quakmybush202-
Stretta021-

With the Strettan team down by 2 in the second period with 7:04 left on the clock, Mantello saw the need to give the team a morale boost. At the puck-drop, Mantello threw his gloves down and ripped his helmet from his head, giving many Strettan fans flashbacks to the gruesome scenes during the last SHL season, where another player left the ice with a broken leg. After a few quick punches, both players were down on the ice and required separating by the referees. "Don't screw with me" were Mantello's parting words across the ice as both players headed to the box for fighting.

This appeared to give a much needed boost, and the next 3 minutes of play saw Cyril Jones and Xavier Otto pick up their first goals of the campaign, with King and Rivers picking up one point each for assists. Headed into the third, there seemed to be a tendency to fall back into defence and find the goals on the break-aways, which worked well to get Stretta into the lead for the first time. However, it was ultimately their downfall, as Quakmybush put two past Mason without answer.

The Giroux Enquirer wrote:Mantello seems to have something to prove at his first world cup, taking some kind of offence at what appeared to be nothing from a Quakmybush player at the face-off circle. Not a player that requires a lot of motivation, he made a short comment at the end of the match, stating "I haven't got anything to prove, I'm just protecting my team". Protecting them from what remains unclear.

Today's performance, despite the loss, has a lot of positives to give for the Strettan side. With limited penalties, and a good offensive effort and fore-check, they can certainly come away with a few wins in this group stage.

Roger Saltwater wasn't bought in to manage the national side because of his great results. He was by no means the best coach in Stretta, and was definitely no the only coach competing for the job. Specualation was rife that he was only there to keep the team under control. A viscious man with a harsh temper, he caught national headlines two years ago after launching a skate at a group of players, causing a laceration on the face of one of the players. An iron-fist was something that the Strettan Sports Council obviously felt was necessary at this championship. Besides the characters on the team, such as Mantello, there are also some big rivalries existing inside the team. Despite the SSC's best efforts to minimise the effect of these relationships on the team, there are some players such as Sanders and Pento who will not enjoy being on the same bench.

Perhaps this is a side-effect of having a lot of foreign hockey players in the league, which will no doubt be a talking point for the SHL's harshest critics, who feel that youth camps in Stretta are just not doing enough to boost the profile of the 3rd largest sport in Stretta. Only time will tell.

David Doranić sat in the locker room of Thatius' Wilson-Daes Arena in downtown Brevik as he awaited the bus to take him and the rest of the Thatius' Ice Hockey team to the hotel on the other side of the city. Everyone was packed and ready to go, but David remained in front of his locker, although he had changed a few minutes ago, and started recollecting his thoughts from the game against Polkopia.

As a second stringer, David awaited his turn to substitute in for Frédéric Nielsen on defense. He got his chance five minutes in as Nielsen succumbed to a slight injury to the head. Immediately Coach Jaufenthaler summoned David to take his place. At the time of the game, David had all the energy to play, but at the moment as he recollected his thoughts, he felt lethargic. His legs, feeling like lead weights, did not want to go on the bus to the hotel. He could lay here all day...

Image

A minute later, David dozed off, involuntarily, of course. He dreamt vividly and without remorse.

Snow fell in Kereon, David's small hometown. The outside hockey rink was abandoned, except for one kid who shot at a broken net. The kid was David at age six and his parents were no where to be seen. Snow continued to come down in sheets and David eventually felt himself becoming buried in the snow. It soon reached his head and he couldn't move. Freaking out, he yelled in his dream. The kid saw him and turned around and shot his hockey puck straight for David's face.

Suddenly, he woke up, feeling as if something hit him square in the forehead. After rubbing his head and waking up from his dream, David noticed he was sprawled on the ground, and he had hit his head as he fell down from the bench.

"Ow..." he said to himself. Glancing at the wall, David noticed it was nearly 9:30. He had been asleep for over an hour, and the bus was gone by now. His teammates had left him here? How considerate...

Glancing in the mirror, David saw his forehead was bright red from the fall. A bruise will form soon, he thought. Slowly, David gathered his belongings are sprinted for the door, hoping the bus would be there, or at least someone would have waited for him. Much to his relief, a few vans with some teammates and assistants were still waiting.

"David!" yelled Edmund Anderson, a fellow player. "About time...been waiting here for thirty minutes. I was just about to come in and check in on you. What happened to your head?!"

"Nothing..." David muttered as he climbed in the van. "Let's go, I'm exhausted," he said with a laugh.

"Alright, alright." said Edmund as he hopped in the back and tapped the driver's shoulder to go.

"You should get that looked at, dude," he said to David. "Looks like someone had a tumble in the shower, no? Next time don't drop the soap."

"Oh yeah, right," replied David, not in the mood to talk. He was taxed and clearly out of it. The dream he had minutes ago had transfixed him...brought up happy memories of practicing as a kid in Kereon, although it was always by himself. He liked silence and thinking to himself, and people seemed to be the least of his worries.

Besides, the team has an important match against Levivania the following day. He would need to get as much sleep as possible so he stay focused. Levivania, although unranked, would be an interesting foe to contest against tomorrow in Wilson-Daes Arena. They outlasted annual hockey contender Free Swiss States, 3-2, shocking most members of the hockey community. This was one team to not underestimate, thought David as he dozed off again...dreaming of white snow drifts that filled the valley of Kereon.

"Good evening folks and welcome to your nightly news. I am Faeron Osearon and here is what is making the news in Valanora this evening...

It was the same thing over and over again, watching the news after a long days of work at the vineyard. Tivodar wondered if things were ever going to change from this routine, if there was something beyond the mundane everyday activities that had become his life. It was not a poor life, just boring and repetitive, not something he thought suited himself. There was something more for him to do, but the what that something was, he was constantly left unsure of.

"And international politics, there are reports filtering in of some sort of natural disaster in Syndicatan territory. The exact extent of damage is yet to be ascertained, but..."

Tivodar frowned a bit at the news of yet another disaster, another hurricane if he remembered right. Nature was also unpredictable, even when you thought you had learned to predict her and sustain yourself from her catastrophes, she would surprise you once more. While he felt pity for those affected by the disaster, he also was a bit apathetic to the coverage it was receiving. Just because nature had struck once more against a densely populated part of the world did not make it a disaster per se, merely poor luck. How many times did a hurricane strike some poor country or uninhabited island and it get called a disaster? Such was the way people seemed to perceive things, it's only a disaster if it affects you.

"Finally in sports, the Calcuttas won their opening game in the World Cup of Hockey, overcoming Saintland in a rematch of the Winter Olympic Gold Medal match of last year. It was a feisty affair until a pair of goals early in the third period put the Calcuttas up for good...

Tivodar had to chuckle, sports were ever the complicated thing. A false sense of war, a demonstration of physical prowess, and of course a way to build up a national identity and fervor. What to do with all that... well there were how other nations and cultures treated it, but he and the Vanorian culture seemed to take it differently. While they shared the pride that came from the success of international sides, it was the desire for perfection in all things that seemed to power Vanorians. They were elves after all, well most of the society, and being as close to perfect was in their blood, in their psyche. It might have come off as cold, calculating, and even a bit egotistical, but that was just who they were.

The question for Tivodar was, was he really just a gardener or was there something more for him to do? Should he simply have resorted to being the most perfect gardener he could be as athletes tried to be the most perfect athletes they could be?
