The Babbage Islands Bumblebees
Roster for WCoH 11

Style: +1

RP Permissions: You may pick my scorers, including assists, and my penalties. Injuries should be limited to those that might take a player out for the next game at most, unless prearranged. Please save godmods for another game, except the really funny ones. The Bumblebees never start a fight, but will cheerfully retaliate, especially with the third line.

Starting Lineup

19 C Tamara Lewis (C) 25 Wright Aeronauts
3 LW Robert Ward 35 Moroni Mariners
12 RW Isaac Clarke 30 North Fork Wings
4 D Auguste Gironne 27 Far Point Owls
2 D Brandon Richardson 26 Moroni Mariners
1 G Emily Johnson 28 Far Point Owls

Four of the six starters return as starters from the Cinderella team of WCoH 10. Lewis, replacing the retired Maurice Hubbard as captain, is a flashy centre with an uncanny ability to win face-offs and a good sense of where her wings are at all times. Clarke and Ward have both won BIHA scoring titles. Clarke likes to set up in front of the net, and Ward has a great slapshot and a gift for getting the upper hand as things get physical. Gironne is a classic scoring defenceman, and Richardson has evolved into a bruiser with good aim when he needs it. Johnson, nicknamed "Madame Butterfly", is a three-time league MVP.

Second, Third, and Fourth Lines
20 C Bradley Cooke (A) 29 Harbor Beach Sharks
7 LW Alexis Rochette 25 Moroni Mariners
18 RW Katharina Lippert 28 Wright Aeronauts

17 C Trevor Bailey 34 Cardiff Foxes
6 LW Joanne Arnold 26 Longview Wolves
11 RW Adrian Parker 36 Moroni Mariners

10 C Gary Johnson 24 Baden Dragoons
9 LW Gerd Kammer 27 Far Point Owls
15 RW Serge Beaudry 30 Cardiff Foxes

The third line, untouched from the previous World Cup, is the enforcement line.

Secondary Defencemen and Goalie

16 D Maurice Hébert (A) 38 Far Point Owls
14 D Colette Rouleau 19 North Fork Wings
5 D Conrad Radtke 27 Baden Dragoons

8 G Ethan Collins 32 Cardiff Foxes

Power Play Unit: Lewis, Clarke, Rochette, Gironne, Rouleau
Penalty Killing Unit: Arnold, Parker, Richardson, Hébert

(OOC: Hopefully you won't mind this one-time interruption from the regular person who stupidly forgot to signup)

SDOS CLERICAL ERROR: NO ICE GIRLS, SORRY

World Cup of Hockey 11 is set to begin in Quintessence of Dust, and fans of the hockey world are excited to see if Plutoni can pull off a three-peat. That will be exciting, but equally so is to watch one of the most popular teams in the world, the Ice Girls that represent Secristan. While other nations might just look at these ladies as people who are only good to sweep a goal crease during a stoppage of play, the Secristani group of attactive women have shown that they can play as well, getting the nation a top ten ranking in the world. Fans were ready to purchase a ton of pay-per-view games, and the Secristan Department of Sports was ready to bring in a lot of money.

And then, they got some terrible news this morning. For some inexplicable reason, the nation never formally submitted the paperwork for entry into the tournament. So this morning, when the team began looking for what group they were in and then couldn't find themselves, they contacted the organizers who promptly told them "you never signed up, idiot." Surely this was a mistake, and SDOS officials would be able to find the faxed confirmation of their entry from Quintessence of Dust officials. They found the prepared paperwork, however it was in a folder beneath a stack of papers, and the fax never sent. Now a former representative of the SDOS, Joe Nugent, has been arrested and faces life in prison with possible death penalty for his negligence, which will cost the SDOS an enormous sum of money. It is unlikely that Nugent's defense of, "There was a problem with the fax machine that morning, and I forgot to get back to it," will hold up in a Secristani court of law. No, Nugent is not a former Dancougaran intern, but today he made all former Dancougaran interns look like geniuses.

We're sorry world, no Ice Girls this time. Blame Joe Nugent.
WINNER of the 1st International Basketball Championships, 7th Di Bradini Cup, & the 4th World Lacrosse Championships!
RUNNERUP in Baptism of Fire 30 and World Baseball Classic 10.
HOST of World Bowl 6, International Basketball Championships 6, and Baptism of Iron 6. (Hosting a 6th version of something? Call us.) Also, World Baseball Classic 12 and World Lacrosse Championships 3.
Qualified for World Cups 49-52.

All arrogant, stuck-up, conceded or whatever comments I make in roleplay are always in-character and should not be interpreted as also being the out-of-character attitude of the person controlling the nation. My nation is my attempt to mock people I have to deal with often at work.

Upon hearing of the plight of the Secristan Ice Girls the Eizen State Consortium of Ice Hockey announced today that they would be willing to foot the bill for the Secristan team to play a pair of exhibition games prior to the Tournament's beginning, as well as pay the costs to Quintessence of Dust for the two night usage of one of their sporting arenas plus arena management and concessions costs. The only condition is that the game be played under Eizen International Coed Friendly Rules, which stipulates a lack of pads, all players must wear tight white t shirts, and that players on the bench are allowed to use whipped cream, high powered squirtguns, and buckets of water on opposing players as they pass. Also, the Gatorade must be spiked with a beverage containing no less than 35% alcohol by volume. After every shift in which a player recieves a minus, that line has to do a shot, and that every penalty kill must be preceded by special teams units on both sides chugging a beer.

We feel this is a very fair arrangement.

If my opponent RPs first, they may:

Choose my scorers: Y
Penalise my players: Y
Eject my players: Y
Injure my players: N
Godmod scoring: Y
Godmod injuries: N
Godmod other events: N

Now, on to the team.

Jeffgordonville National Ice Hockey Team

Modifier -1
The team has become more defence-oriented since WCOH 10. Team Coach Mikko Kozarowitzy felt that the team needed consistent, reliable results, putting the team's failure to make the playoffs down to it's on/off defence. As such, he has recommended the players focus on training their defensive abilities, but there is only one way to make sure that this has paid off.

Forward Line 1
This line remains unchanged from WCOH 10, mostly because each player on the line perfectly complimented each other.

LW - Martin McReynolds (27): The leading goalscorer in the JHL for the past 4 seasons for the Labonteville Thunder, McReynolds is incredibly agile and is arguably the fastest on the ice today. Famously managed to best all 6 of the Webber City Tornadoes on when they pulled their goalie in favour of an extra defender to try and shut down McReynolds, who had already scored a record 4 goals on that night. Martin has also received the MVP award twice in the JHL as well. Since WCOH 10, McReynolds' scoring streak has continued to an incredible 238 consecutive games, and shows no signs of stopping.

C - Tara Farmer (30): One of the most charismatic players in the JHL, Farmer has received over a thousand votes for mayor of Webber City despite never having been on the ballot. Often pointed out as the sole reason that the Webber City Tornadoes has gotten any success in past seasons, Farmer is also the highest paid player in the JHL, receiving almost 7 million Satos per season. Farmer is more at home setting up her teammates for scoring opportunity, possessing a keen analytical mind which can sense an opening and take advantage before anyone else knows what's happening. She retains her role as Captain of the team, as her on-ice calls have only gotten better over time. This resulted in the Webber City Tornadoes stealing the JHL championship from the Labonteville Thunder last season, the first championship for the normally luckless Tornadoes.

RW - Rodney Jefferson (34): Coming in at 6'9" and weighing 330 lbs, Jefferson looks like he'd be more at home in defence, but his skating skill is not to be underestimated, and can leave his opposition dumbfounded when he dodges their best attempts to body check him. That said, Jefferson often prefers to simply bulldoze his way through his opponents, whether trying to score or covering his teammates. Over the previous season, however, Jefferson has taken to covering his teammates more often, as a concussive blown to the head seemed to negatively effect his puck-aiming skills.

Forward Line 2
This line is also unchanged from last season.
LW - Jimmy Lyons (25): One of the two Lyons twins, Jimmy is the quieter twin, preferring to take his time and aim a perfectly placed shot rather than bombard the goal with constant shots.

C - Arnold Fly (24): The only person to ever be on the same line as the Lyons twins and not look completely out of place. Often finds himself setting up Jimmy and Frederica, but is deadly accurate himself. Is rumoured to be in a relationship with Frederica.

RW - Frederica Lyons (25): The other Lyons twin, Frederica has lived in Jimmy's shadow through much of her time in the junior ranks. Has a highly competitive nature as a result of trying to beat her twin, which manifests itself as being highly impatient and constantly bombarding a goalie with shots, degenerating into screaming and shouting if half a dozen or so shots are denied. Has attempted to pick a fight with Brett LeRoi on two occasions, and is known as the only person who can regularly hold their own against Patrick O'Kneel.

Forward Line 3
This line sees Jimmy McReynolds, younger brother of Martin, replace Chris Jakobsen.
LW - Carl Bouvier (31): Bouvier is one of the odder choices on the Jeffgordonville side. For 4 seasons, he has languished on the second line of the Churchton Snipers in the JHL, one of the worst teams in the league. Carl is probably also one of the least remarkable players, though he is prone to surprising acts of bravery, such as his attempted hip check of the much larger Rodney Jefferson two seasons ago. Carl is a more defensive forward, now more than ever.

C - Landon Johnson (30): The Captain of the constantly-improving Terrance Anvils, Landon Johnson has been credited as one of the more crucial components of the team's line. His performance often reflects locker-room moods, and as such, it was not unusual to see the team send the 3rd line out after an intermission.

RW - Jimmy McReynolds (21): Jimmy McReynolds, while not yet possessing the star quality of his older brother, was an integral part of the Webber City Tornadoes in their championship victory over the Labonteville Thunder last season, scoring the game-winning goal in the championship decider.

Forward Line 4
This line sees Chad Alexander and Amy Davis join the team, replacing Steve Button and Alyson Bernoldt.
LW - Wayne Carlisle (23)
C - Amy Davis (26)
RW - Chad Alexander (30)

Defence Line 1
This line remains unchanged
LD - Jack Solo (35): As his name might suggest, Jack prefers one-on-one situations, and thanks to his immense speed, larger opponents diving out of his way is not unheard of. Unlike his fellow first line defenceman on the Labonteville Thunder, Jack follows the rules to the letter as much as he can, which can really piss the scorers off when he's on a really good day.

RD - Patrick O'Kneel (28): Already looking like he's well on his way to taking the all-time record for most penalty minutes, Patrick comes from a family entrenched in the Jeffgordonvillian military, and it really shows. Ever the showman, on the rare occasion that McReynolds can't get it together, all it will often take is for O'Kneel to bring a random opponent to their knees in a fight. A former boxer and martial arts expert, O'Kneel almost always has the upper hand in a fight.

Defence Line 2
This line sees Tim Duncan replace Quentin Ashley, who has been relegated to the third line after a lacklustre season in the JHL.
LD - Rik Enstoc (38)

RD - Tim Duncan (24): One of the hottest defencemen to come along in years, Duncan is the second of two rookies on the national team. Duncan performed admirably alongside Patrick O'Kneel, picking up O'Kneel's style, and the two have since become fan favourites, despite regularly being penalised. He is not on the first line yet, however, as he has proven unable to cope in high pressure environments.

Defence Line 3
This line sees Quentin Ashley replace Sharon Stone, who will be unable to play during the tournament due to injury.
LD - Peter Robyn (42): The eldest player on the team, Robyn was formerly a great player, and one of the best defencemen, until a fateful fight with O'Kneel 3 years ago which ended both players' seasons, O'Kneel serving a suspension, with Robyn in hospital. Though he is still not to be trifled with, Robyn has since seemed to lack his edge.

RD - Quentin Ashley (35)

Goalies
After performing well for the Webber City Tornadoes last season, Bill Gordon replaces Kyle Johnson in the third goalie position, who himself replaces David Gear, who was dropped after a sub par season for the Quentin Rockets last season.
G - Brett LeRoi (29): Already touted as the greatest Jeffgordonvillian goalie of all time, LeRoi has often been compared to a brick wall. Extremely apt with the glove, LeRoi has a 74% accuracy rate when it comes to catching pucks. That is not to write off his blocker, stick, and pads, as they quite often manage to deny goals as well. It is a good thing LeRoi plays for the Labonteville Thunder, as what would happen if Martin McReynolds attempted to score on him has often been compared to an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
G - Kyle Johnson (23)
G - Bill Gordon (27)

The Estresse Intenso roster is composed by people who, after the war inside the country got into a really chaotic and destructive situation, hoped to abandon the nation looking for a safer place. But most of these players, even though they are looking for peace, are former warriors of many different factions, so they can be still violent sometimes, especially to members of their own team, as some were big rivals in the past. All the players are talented hockey players, but the team lacks playing experience. According to the few people that have some knowledge about this Estresse Intenso squad, the best player is Dejan Kohlmeir.

"Hey Lenny", Pietro Gryphon called out to his linemate. "You gonna score tonight?"

"Heh, you know it. I'm also hoping to find the back of the net tonight too giggity giggity!" Lenny Quagmire responded.

"Awright you pudpulling bunch of knuckleheads pipe down!" Coach Dunlop said as he took a long drag from a flask in his jacket pocket. "We've got four globally ranked teams in our bracket, and aint none of you jackoffs are going to get that as an excuse afterwards. None of these other teams here play our game, but we're going to make them play it. Buncha sissies who don't play defense and expect to light the lamp every time down the ice, we're gonna grind them so far into the ice they're going to have to repaint the blue lines mid game! Then when they're running out of gas and we're still on all cylinders we brutalize them even more and have our way with their goaltenders, just like we'll have our way at the brothel down the street after the game...IF WE WIN.

First game looks like its gonna be Delaclava. These guys are jackasses pure and simple, you know what they did? They Posted a whole bunch of trash talk in their national media bout how the "Wimperials" from Eizen were going to pee their pants if they stepped on the ice with them, you believe that garbage?"

George Pathos's moustache flared as he stood up and caved in the door to a nearby locker with no damage to his hand whatsoever.

"That's what I thought! But the worst thing that they did...oh boy...one of their TV hosts put up a picture of what they said was the nursing home where our mothers and grandmothers lived. You know what they did? They put up a picture of a run down whorehouse, not one of the nice ones, but a reaaaaaaal skeezy one. Are you guys gonna take that lying down?"

A chours of "Hell No!" and "No Fucking Way!" erupted from the gathered players.

Dunlop grinned smugly, knowing his boys were ready for war. "Then show me what you got."

GRESCHMEIER, Quintessence of Dust (BPA) -- For The Babbage Islands Bumblebees, the 11th World Cup of Hockey opened with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the #5-ranked team from Cassadaigua.

Both teams opened the match rather tight, and few scoring opportunities presented themselves in the first period. As the squads took each others' measure, affairs opened up in the second period and all three goals were scored then. The Dagans opened the scoring at 7:49 of the second on a power play goal, then increased their lead to 2-0 at the 13:00 mark. The Bumblebees got one back at 18:29 of the second, when Brandon Richardson took a feed from Tamara Lewis and one-timed it past the Dagan keeper. But even 12 shots on goal for the Yellow-and-Black in the closing stanza couldn't yield an equaliser, and the Bumblebees succumbed.

The next game for the Babbage side will be against Chocolate Pencils, who fell to Euroslavia 2-0 in their opener.

Choose my scorers: Oh, go on then.
Penalise my players: Yup, quite a lot in fact. Not for playing dirty though, Snorths get that the basic idea of ice hockey is to win by scoring more goals than the other team but other than that they're fairly naïve on the details of the game so they'll be giving away plenty of naïve fouls away.
Eject my players: Yup
Injure my players: Ye, go on. You know you want to.
Godmod scoring: To an extent, yes.
Godmod injuries: Yep, stray biscuits on the rink can cause a lot of harm, ye know. Jammy dodgers in particular.
Godmod other events: Eh, might as well say yep.

Last time, on World Cup of Hockey Side Story!

"There are signs of a struggle, but the tape in the hall confirms nobody came in here besides Cashman," muttered Peter, looking at the damage done to a lamp, a desk chair, and a wall mirror. "But I guess that's why they called us in."

"No doubt," said Russ. He stood up and reached for a pair of sunglasses. "I don't know what went down in here, though I can say one thing for sure: the pen is mightier."

"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!!" yelled Peter at the top of his lungs, startling the cops outside and drawing an exasperated look from his partner.

Leo Cashman... promising intern for AGAINST, the sports network which wants so badly to be DSPN but fails hard. After botching a match report for a playoff game against Sarzonia, Cashman atoned for it with his life, apparently unwilling to accept the traditional intern pink slip. But is that what really happened? Peter Klingenschmidt and Russ Pauli are on the case because there is no one else. No, seriously, there isn't. We looked.

A single car drove down the freeway in the direction of the AGAINST studios in Stoneridge. Thanks to fluid time, two years had passed and it was already time for the eleventh World Cup of Hockey, but it felt like the investigation had started only yesterday. Of course, that was because it had. Fluid time is weird like that.

Because this was the north, the local affiliate was carrying the Dancougar-Kulverint game on the radio. People up here actually cared about hockey and this worked just fine for Peter, who was happy to get his fix. "Line change as Shingler dumps the puck into the Kulverint end, first line out as Yanrz takes the puck behind the net, now brings it out and goes up ice for Niiai. Niiai looks ahead but too much on it and the puck rattles behind the net, Prier scoops it along and takes a hit, pinned up against the boards are Baillie and Mana, puck is back to Prier and up through the middle as Brancanto takes it, fighting to get past Niiai. The SHOT, goes wide..."

"It seems silly to think that Cashman would have just made stuff up for the match report," mused Russ, trying to get into the right frame of mind. "We have testimony that he was in the press room that night watching the wire."

"What does any of that have to do with what happened in the hotel, anyway?" asked Peter.

"There was too much about that room that didn't look right," Russ replied. "I don't think I can believe it was just a suicide."

"Maybe he trashed the room before he offed himself?" Peter said. He pounded the dashboard as the puck was frozen by Niouna, the Kulverint goalie. "Damnit, Baillie, get in there and fight for that puck!"

"That's what we have to establish," said Russ. Their car passed a sign which indicated their exit was approaching. "We need to find out what kind of person this Leo Cashman was." Their car veered off onto the exit ramp, which put them about six miles from downtown Stoneridge. The studio was out here in the 'burbs.

The radio continued to blare. "Golombek dumps the puck into the zone and Chudzinski will fly in and gets it away from Yanrz; the Wings are really liking the additional muscle Chudzy gives them on the second line. He works inside and the puck us kicked behind the net by Niouna, Chudzy still fights for it and pushes it out front and Golombek shoots, HE SCOOOORES! And chalk one up for the Gooooooomba. Blake Golombek opens his tally late in the first period, and the Wings have retaken the lead, 2-1!"

**********

"I never had any problems with him. He seemed like a pretty mellow guy." Larry McDonegal, known in these parts as The Chief, was in the middle of cutting together highlights of Dancougar's IBC win over Cassadaigua. The nightly highlight show on AGAINST, Final Score, paled next to the juggernaut that was DSPN's Sportscenter. "But you look at where we are and who we're competing against, and it's just impossible to keep someone like him around who's just going to foul up. DSPN had to recover from the Land de Wood incident, and even the News!! has its fair share of mistakes from time to time. We need to establish ourselves as someone the public can rely on."

"No, no, I agree with you, but whether or not Leo Cashman impacts the bottom line isn't the question, here," Russ said. "We want to know more about Leo the person, not Leo the intern."

"Well, it's like I said, he was a pretty easy-going person when he was on the job, but I'm definitely not the person to ask," replied The Chief. "You've talked to the family, right?"

"Not yet, but they're on our list," Russ replied. He turned to Peter, who was glued to the various monitors showing hockey games. He was following the Dancougar-Kulverint screen. "Hey, are you paying attention at all?"

"Yeah, right on it, bro," Peter said. "Cashman was a mellow guy, something something Land de Wood... oh, get in there, in there, IN THERE! YEEEEEEAH!!! Points in the bag, four-one, baby!"

"In any case, let's turn out attention to the night Cashman died," Russ continued, turning back to The Chief. "How the highlights from the Sarzonia game were misreported..."

World Cup of Hockey Roster and Media Guide

Team Nickname - Grizzlies

Head Coach - Viktor Brandin

The head coach of the Toyur national hockey team is well-known amongst the hockey faithful in Toyur, having led the historic IK Kristiansberg club to three national championships in seven years as that team's captain, and being the first player in the Elitserien to score over 1500 points in a career. Brandin has brought his attack-minded philosophy to the national team stage. While not one to shy away from the need for stay-at-home defencemen and a solid checking line to frustrate the opponent's top scorers (a line led by current Kristiansberg captain Mats Hölmqvist), he has a solid goalkeeping tandem to rely on and can focus on putting goals in the other team's net rather than focusing too much on keeping them out of their own.

BACK ON THE ICE
Grizzlies open the 11th World Cup of Hockey with nervy win
by Sven Magnusson

GRESCHMEIER, QUINTESSENCE OF DUST (TP) - The Grizzlies are back on the ice after a long layoff, with the World Cup of Hockey making a welcome return to the realm of international sporting tournaments. Fortunately, the message got to Toyur after the first 27 minutes of the first half and someone told them that the tournament had actually started.

Indeed, it looked as though the players were under the impression that the pre-game skate was still on, as they watched idly by (almost) as the unranked San Giorio E Cremano looked to make a strong impression to its future group A-with-accent-rising-to-the-right opponents. 2-0 was the score after the first period, with the newcomers so new that they had not had time to put names on the back of their jerseys (probably owing to the mixup between the QoD calendar and everyone else's calendar). Those wearing numbers 7 and 21 tallied for the Cremanos, with it needing to be said that Patrik Dahlin put in his best effort while the other green-clad skaters doing little to stop the opposition.

A Qodite official stopped by the Toyur dressing room to inform them that yes, the tournament has indeed started for real, and the response from the Grizzlies showed improved vim and vigour. Jakob Hjerstedt quickly picked up where he left off after the 10th edition's 9 goals, scoring on a high shot early in the second. The game was tied minutes later thanks to Petr Rasmussen, while Niels Linderoth put the Grizzlies up 3-2 going into the second intermission. Anders Mjallby made it 4-2 early on in the third, when the Cremano number 7 struck again to bring the deficit back to one. Hjerstedt picked up his second goal of the evening late on into an empty net, and it was crisis averted for the 12th ranked Grizzlies.

Toyur are expected to finish 2nd behind Cassadaigua in many pre-tournament predictions, although the Babbage Islands may have something to say about that. Toyur are also in a group with Euroslavia, their next opponents, as well as Chocolate Pencils and their first opponents, San Giorgio E Cremano. The game with Euroslavia can be seen on TSTV1.

OOC: Nice, Dancougar. That was well done. And hilarious.

Volunteers upend Qazox in opene...Wait, what?

That's right folks. The Volunteer system really does work, apparently. That's what a 3-0 pubic embarrassment of #3 Qazox showed, at least.

That's right. A shut out.

Ok, so some improvement was definitely expected, but still. This is sort of ridiculous.

Apparently, the Vols were happy enough to hear they'd be playing against rival Qazox for their opener. It would be good to make a statement, they said.

Well make a statement they did. They held the normally-explosive offense (even if it was led by a bunch of college students; they're still players at a pretty high level for a nation with a good hockey tradition) to no points at all, while Danielle Andicek had one goal and an assist, and Allaaks Oevachkun had a goal and two assists. Kristin Maarks had another goal, with Theodur Braannur assisting. Caitlin Strasbourg, coming off a strong domestic season, denied Qazox any goals, blocking all attempted 32 shots.

The first Vols' goal was scored only :34 into the first period, when Danielle Andicek broke free of a melee in the middle, zipped down the rink, got a set up from Allaaks Oevachkun, and sniped one in to give the Volunteers the early lead. The Volunteers had 15 shots in the first period, but only the one connected. An early lead had been established.

The second goal came towards the end of the second period, when Allaaks, showing his usual explosiveness, managed to shoot in a slap-shot after being set-up for it by Andicek, which went in easily before Francine Hicks could even come close to deflecting it.

Finally, Kristin Maarks found her 'mark' (haha!) after Theodur Braannur shot her a pass for her to flick the puck into an open net to seal the Volunteers' big victory at 3-0 by the middle of the third period. Strasbourg continued to deny the Qazians anything, and the Vols left the ice with a surprisingly easy victory.

On the other side of things, Artie Weiss was hit with a fighting minor. Twice. Just because he's Artie.

The Volunteers play against Andrewboy next. They're hoping to follow up a quick and easy victory over Qazox with another strong showing against Andrewboy.

Coach O'Daniel spoke after the game. "I'm very happy with their performance; they went out and demolished our rival, and got a strong start and momentum going our way. If we keep this up, nobody's going to keep us out of the playoffs."

Kristin Maarks noted afterward that "it was surprising how easy everything felt." Maarks scored in the game.

Scoring Summary

First Period
9:31 - Andicek goal, Oevachkun assist (1-0, Fanboyists)

Second Period
1:16 - Oevachkun goal, Andicek assist (2-0, Fanboyists)

Maarkus had an eyebrow raised. He did this a lot. His teammates confused him sometimes.

Seriously, what's with the freakin' rubber chicken? he thought, watching Mike, Joe, Allaaks, and Niekulus forming a little circle as they ritually sacrificed the unfortunate latex fowl.

He shrugged. Just a pre-game ritual, he figured.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the players took the ice, Theodur, for his part, was wondering why there seemed to be an unusual energy to everyone. He'd swore they had all drunk too much "Chaarge!" energy drink, except there wasn't enough incessant chattering.

Then he was more surprised. As the game opened, Danielle and Allaaks, looking for an early lead, shot out to the Qazian side and dropped the puck neatly between Francine Hicks' feet, before she had time to realize what was going on.

Odd. There was fast scoring, but that was sort of ridiculous.

Then, he swore Caitlin stopped the puck from the wrong side of the goal. There was no concievable way she should have been able to interpose her glove. It didn't look like she had. After all, she was still looking the wrong way.

But the puck was zooming the other way. Of its own accord, apparently.

One Qazian player was practically bug-eyed as he saw this, and started babbling something.

Briefly. Artie shouted something (Oh God, did he just shout "Time to hit the pads?" Would his humor ever get better?) and he was flattened against the wall. There were distinct "Ooh's" from the crowd. The Ref immediately called the penalty. No way had that been legal.

Things continued in this vein; Caitlin made saves that, good as she was, she had no right making. It was like there was an invisible person covering whatever part of the goal she wasn't. Things stubbornly refused to go in.

Well, except for one time when Artie decided to send one of the Qazians into it. Then they went in just fine. No penalty, oddly enough.

"Kill the umpire!" someone in the crowd shouted. A few of the Fanboyist fans shouted back.

"Idiot! This isn't swimming! Really, get your sports right!"

Allaaks made one...well, ok, he usually did make them. That wasn't wierd.

Then there was Kristin's. Theodur was on the ice himself, by now, and he made his own shot. It went the wrong way. Missed the goal entirely, really.

Went cleanly to Kristin. She easily swept it in, ending the sweep of the Quails, or Oxen, or whatever they were in this tournament.

He could have swore that Francine Hicks had seen the puck somewhere else. How else could she have been clear at the other side of the goal. Nobody was that bad.

But there it was. A win that was easy. Almost too easy.

Oh well. What the hell.

(Players converse.)

Bannister: Man, how do you think that basketball thing is going to end up with the reporters?

Carpentier: I don’t know but those things usually have a way of working out, it’s a shame though that it means they have been scared off from sending people to Quintessence of Dust. I felt weird only being interviewed by the Centralia Courier and Loudon Spot-Herald and some other papers.

Bannister: That’s because you play in Pock City. The Spot-Herald is a damn good paper.

Stuart: Hey, have you guys seen what group Secristan is in?

Bannister: Secristan? Hmmm, they should be right about.....

Kolosov (his broken english will be intended, and should not be seen as typos or bad grammar): Secristan stupid they forgot to sign up. That guy Nugent in big trouble.

Carpentier: I think it’s funny, but it’s not funny because everyone loved the Ice Girls. You can’t depend on Cassadaigua in hockey, they actually bring men as well as women. The Ice Girls will be missed greatly.

Bannister: Maybe Cassadaigua will bring only women this time. Where’s their roster?

Stuart: It’s coming. They’re a day late to officially publish it. You know, women and their timeliness.

Kolosov: I know but they beat Babbage Islands.

Bannister: The Bumblebees have a chick goalie. She was probably distracted by talking about shoes with the Cassadagan female forwards but really the Dagans were setting up a screen and their defense was scoring.

Stuart: How do you know that? Stop explaining how the goals of another game happened!

Bannister: I was speculating, geez!

Carpentier: Emily Johnson is a damn good goalie, don’t be saying that to her face.

Bannister: Oh I won’t, but she’s not here right now, is she? Ok then.

Carpentier: No, but just because we tied Plutoni, let’s not all go getting big heads. It’s really a shame that the Rocket Report is scared to report on one of the greatest results of all time in Newmanistan hockey, tying the two-time defending champion.

Stuart: Wait, what did you just say?

Carpentier: I said, just because.....

Stuart: (interrupting): Yeah, yeah, don’t get big heads, and then you all go calling a tie one of the greatest results of all time in Empire hockey history. Hypocrite much?

Carpentier: Ok, you’re right.

Bannister: Huge point, though.

Kolosov: Yes big point!

Carpentier: Gamblers probably made money on it.

Kolosov: Yes I make money!

Bannister: Wait, YOU made money!

Kolosov: Yes! Yes!

Stuart: Slava, you really should not be wagering on Rockets games while you are a Rocket.

Kolosov: But guy said it would be ok.

Carpentier: Slava, don’t. Where was this guy?

Kolosov: Met him in Dover City. He friend of Alex (Alexandre Starkov, who plays in Dover City). He helped him get started and learn the language when his parents moved here from Myedvedeya (a former nation on here that used to RP, and had their players be "Russian" decsent) as that nation began to cease to exist. Sometimes we make bets. He says its ok. He says he’s really going to pay a lot of attention to the World Cup because he thinks we can make him good money as an underdog!

(The others looked at their teammate, realizing someone was taking advantage of him and Starkov given they had only recently come to Newmanistan. They didn’t really like the sound of this).

(First Period)

With just under five minutes left to play in the first period Jarrko Temmonen was annoyed. The twin checking lines Eizen was fielding were almost always on the ice to neutralize his top line, and although he and his Delaclavan teammates played well, they were generating almost no scoring chances.

"Time to do a little dangling, i'm faster than these guys..hey there's Greg!"

Temmonen's linemate, Greg Amselik was making a hard charge towards the net, he had gotten a step on the Eizen defender and there was a golden chance for a redirect. In a split second, Temmonen's pass was on it's way, then suddenly, the bright lights of the stadium filled his eyes and pain coursed through his body. The pass was almost perfect, but Temmonen had admired it for a half second too long, allowing Eizen forward George Pathos to lay into him with a crushing open ice hit at the top of the circle to the right of the net.

"That's for making fun of my grandma!"

Temmonen's teammates rushed to his aid and a fight broke out between Pathos and one of his teammates, which one it was he could not tell. Fortunately though he was still lucid, he'd only had the wind knocked out of him nothing more, but in the back of his head there was one lingering thought.

"We gotta play these guys for two more periods?"

(Second Period)

"Coach, i'm hungry!" Orville Sully complained at the halfway point of the second. "Can I run to the concession stand and get some of those whale ribs the locals been talking up?"

"For fuck's sake Sully, we're in the middle of a game! I'll tell you what, go pick a fight with their best D-Man and i'll send you some chow to the penalty box. Now get out there!"

(MINUTES LATER, AFTER THE FIGHT)

"...For the Eizen team #21 Orville Sully, five minutes for fighting plus a ten minute misconduct for berating an official..."

"Dammit Sully."

"Didja like that coach! I even told that Zebra that he's the fatherless son of a saggy titted gutterslut! That will give me time to enjoy my food!"

(Third Period)

With the final seconds ticking away, the Delaclavs had pulled their goaltender. But Bane Blackheart had other ideas.

"Hey why you leaving the ice you twerp? Could it be you had a five hole you could drive a damn bus through? Or is it because you were slower than sludgey diarrhea running uphill against the wind!"

Ezekial Faroza didn't take terribly kindly to the insults though and skated towards Blackheart. "Say that again asshole! Easy to talk trash when you get one lucky game out of a thousand!"

Unfortunately Blackhearts ploy worked. Faroza took the bait just as the sixth attacker was coming onto the ice, he never got back quikly enough as the Delaclavs were hit with a too many men on the ice penalty, the final minute of the game would be played five one five after all.

(POSTGAME)

Fans across Eizen today rejoiced as Eizen's bold re-entry into International play paid off with a stunning upset of the 13th ranked team in the world. In Highmark City, Imperial diplomatic teams are already on their way to negotiate the release of arrested Eizenian fans who were overly jubilant in their victory celebrations. In his postgame interview. Coach Dunlop talked about how the Eizen style of play affected the game.

"Delaclava is a great team no question, obviously we were looking to put the puck in the net but it was just as important for those first twenty minutes that we beat them down. Even though we were down 0-1 going into the first break we were pretty damn confident, and then within the first minute of the second Selanne gets the first goal and we'd siezed the momentum like a thirsty boozehound in a brewery. The thing is that we weren't perfect either, and if we stick to our plan we're only going to get better as this tournament progresses."

Jeffgordonville 5, Kenavt 2 on Matchday 1

After failing to make the playoffs in WCOH 10, the national hockey team ranked equal-nineteenth, started off their WCOH 11 campaign with an extremely well-played game against equal-thirty-fifth ranked Kenavt.

Martin McReynolds started things off by receiving a pass from fellow winger Rodney Jefferson to put Jeffgordonville up 1-0 at the top of the first. Kenavt's defence scrambled from there, and managed to prevent McReynolds from making it 2-0 as Kenton Devlin pinned him against the boards. Tara Farmer, however, managed to pick up the loose puck, and managed to score instead, making the score 2-0 to Jeffgordonville not 5 minutes into the first. At this point, however, Kenavt began ramping up their defence, and scoring became much more difficult. Richard Ashbury and Brett LeRoi ensured that the rest of the first would be scoreless.

The second period saw things begin to swing in Kenavt's direction, as Patrick O'Kneel was sent to the box for sticking. Ashton Peti took advantage of the powerplay to put Kenavt on the board, with a fantastic wraparound goal. Francesca Lyons then received the puck from a faceoff-winning Arnold Fly, and proceeded to pepper Ashbury with shots, to no effect. Fabian Molyneux picked a rebound, and outmanoeuvred Rik Enstoc in order to tie the game 2 all with 7 minutes to go in the 2nd. With the first and second forward lines starting to tire, Mikko Kozarowitzky sent out the third line, a move that would prove to be an inspired decision. Kelsey Warden won the face off for Kenavt, before meeting a wall named Jack Solo. Solo picked up the loose puck and took it into the offensive zone, and passed to Jimmy McReynolds, who scored on the one-timer to give Jeffgordonville back the lead. From there, momentum shifted back to the players in white and red, though no more goals would be recorded in the period.

With the third period now starting, fatigue was evident on both sides, though it was more evident on the Kenavt side. Martin McReynolds took advantage of this, firing off a slapshot 2 minutes into the period to make the score 4-2. With a two goal lead now in hand, the team began to play on the defensive. After Kenavt's first line fired off a succession of shots at LeRoi, however, Patrick O'Kneel decided to effectively end any hope of the team recovering the game, taking the puck along the boards before firing a point-blank snapshot to take Jeffgordonville to a 3 goal lead with 5 minutes left. If that did not break the spirit of the Kenavt players, O'Kneel's somewhat over-the-top celebrations did. The score was unchanged from then onwards, as the team sealed off an excellent start to the tournament.

Team comments:

Martin McReynolds (2 goals, 1 assist): "It was a brilliant show from all of us. We've all trained 110% to try and take Jeffgordonville to the playoffs, and it really showed today. It almost didn't go our way though; I think li'l Jim's goal there in the second really gave us the boost we needed in the third, otherwise who knows what would've happened. But it was great to see my bro step up for us all there."
Tara Farmer (1 goal, 2 assists): "I think our performance today shows we're really serious about making it to the playoffs this time. Last season, we weren't quite prepared, and it ultimately showed. Now, we're all focused and it'll take some good hockey to knock us back. Still, it wasn't a perfect performance for us, we nearly let Kenavt in with a chance, so we need to keep working at it in order to keep our hopes alive."
Mikko Kozarowitzky: "I have to say, these guys did a hell of a job here, and they've all shown that they can always improve, and that's the most important thing. Everybody pulled together, and showed that team mentality that you need in the World Cup of Hockey, something they may have lacked last time. I know they're all hungry to make it to the playoffs, and I'm confident, if they all continue to play like they just have, that we will make it to the playoffs."

Imperial Sports Presentation Network - Stay tuned after the prime time relay of the Eizen/Delaclava tilt followed by Hockey Night in Eizen for analysis on the next round of the competition.

(Prime Time Replay of game broadcast earlier in the day, needless to say the the time of the game in QoD meant that the live broadcast took place early in the morning, but still was a rating smash hit and was the highest rated live sporting event in Eizen for the past three years.)

Hockey Night In Eizen Theme Plays

"Evening everyone, i'm Kent English, well we've just about gone over this game to death, the defensive, the hard work, and the execution of the game plan created the perfect conditions for what many in the international community are calling an upset. Granted the Eizen National team definitely caught the Delaclavs off guard, but they will now lose that element of surprise as other teams take notice, including the next team up on the schedule, the twenty fifth ranked Sorthern Northland national team.

(camera cuts away as video highlights from Sorthern Northland's 4-4 tie with Vrabia play along with Kent English's audio commentary. Included are highlight reel goals and key saves from SN's goaltender.)

"Joining me now live from our on site studio in Quintessence of Dust to examine this next matchup is longtime televsion analyst and play by play announcer for ISPN's ice hockey coverage, Rich Janneray, Rich thank you for joining us."

"Hey my pleasure Kent, always a pleasure to talk about well played old time hockey."

"Well played was certainly the case earlier today, but this next matchup poses some new issues for Coach Dunlop and the boys yes?"

"That's right. The Sorthern Northlanders are ranked as highly as Delaclava was, but they have much faster skaters and shoot the puck a lot. Their top lines have good chemistry making the one timer that much more dangerous, and if you start going down a man watch out, because this power play is lights out."

"That brings up an interesting point Rich, Eizen took a lot of penalties in the win and not all of them were offsetting."

"Well the thing that they did right was take fewer in that third period, but that tripping call was a terrible one to make, especially with a lead late in the game like that, you never want to give the other team a chance to get back into it. Aside from avoiding the special teams play, the defense is going to have to really keep up the pace though and I don't just mean the checking lines. These Northlanders are all about offense so our guys on offense are going to have to be responsible with the puck and play smart in front of their own net. The defender sthough have to realize that they need to take their shots at the net themselves if they're going to enjoy another win, Coach Dunlop needs to remind these guys that the key to winning isn't just punishing defense, it's also sustained offensive pressure. I'd like to see a little less of the forecheck this game and a lot more blocked shots."

"Well said Rich, Now, do you think there will be any kind of victory hangover heading into the next game that Eizen needs to look out for?"

"I really don't, there might be a little more swagger in their step but I think that isn't an entirely bad thing. Dunlop knows how to motivate these guys, he'll find a way to do it again. Most of the guys on this team are Champions at the professional level, and those that aqren't are champions at the minor and junior league levels, they know they can't quit until they have their medals, trophies, rings, and any other hardware they might pile up."

Highmark City, Eizen Team's Hotel

"Dammit did you guys see this?" Pietro Gryphon said as he barged through the lobby as the team prepared to board the bus that would take them back to the arena? "One of those bastards from Sorthern Northland put an ad in the paper here! Look at it!"

The full page ad in the sports section of the newspaper read in large print "Luck Only Gets You So Far, with a smaller line of print underneath cheering on the Sorthern Northland team, the finest print said "paid for by a staunch supporter of the S.N. National Team."

"You have got to be kidding me!" Ray Zerblade exclaimed loudly, in a rage he grabbed the nearest bellboy and threw him into the fountain of the hotel lobby.

"We'll show 'em, It's almost like the whole world is against us!" Huey Rancor said as he cracked his knuckles.

The night before, less than two hours after the win...

Coach Dunlop locked himself in his hotel room, the player were downstairs celebrating at the bar with every local woman they could find who looked easy. There was no way they would be able to listen in on him.

"Hi is this the Times of Highmark newspaper? Yeah i'd like to put an ad in the paper...yeah I know its late but I want a full page and i'm willing to pay up front.."

Delaclava lost their opener in the 11th World Cup of Hockey 3-1 to Eizen. Despite a first-period Jarkko Temmonen goal, Delaclava's defense gave up three in the second and third periods.

Paktur declined to comment, but seemed furious. Indeed, the Eizen team had the impression that the 13th-ranked Delaclavs were ranked as low as 25th. Better play is necessary for the next game.

ISPN Breaking News Update

Progress is being made in the case of six Eizen citizens currently being held in Quintessence of Dust for charges of assault, reckless driving of a rental car, public intoxication, public urination, public fornication, and defacement of public property after one of the six vomited in the back of a police car which still smells incredibly bad nearly a day later. The "Six Bastards From Hell" as they are being referred to are currently confined to their hotel rooms by police after Eizen National Coach Dunlop posted their bail. Coach was quoted as saying "Anything for our fans, they're the best in the world. Here's hoping they get deported safely."

If Coach Dunlop should be concerned about anyone getting deported though, it's one of his star forwards, Center Pietro Gryphon, who had an assist in the third period of the game with Delaclava, is wanted on suspicion of Grand Theft Auto after apparently stealing a garbage truck and crashing it into the Eizen team hotel, causing his linemate Cleaver Brown to fall from the building as he was taking a bath. Thankfully Brown was unhurt, but the shenanigans of the Eizen squad are under careful scrutinty by Highmark City officials.

"Shenanigans of this sort will not be tolerated in Highmark City" a policeman on the scene was quoted as saying. "We tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt. and these Eizenian..Eizeners...whatever...are just reinforcing that stereotype."

Keep in mind that the live broadcast of the game can be found on the Imperial Public Channel all across the Empire and it's colonies at 8:00 AM Ultima Standard Time. News and analysis as the game progresses can be found on our brother network, ISPN ICE.

The biggest question in Mark Browers's mind was how his team would handle their new-found success.

They were coming off a shock run to the finals of the 10th World Cup of Hockey. They battled Plutoni to the maximum five games in the championship series. That's current two-time defending champions Plutoni.

Browers wanted to see his team play with the fire they showed throughout the previous World Cup now that they were no longer a team you could dismiss. He got that with the team's 4-2 opening victory over Ad'ihan.

Matt Peterson made 23 saves and the Stars won in spite of Ad'ihan holding Sylvan Turcotte without a goal for most of the match. However, the Stars winger drew so much attention from Ad'ihan that his linemates were frequently open. Goaltender Patrick Freitag faced 36 Stars shots and was fortunate enough to turn aside 33 of them.

Cameron Granato was the primary beneficiary of the attention Ad'ihan paid to Turcotte, scoring two of Sarzonia's goals. Steven Miller added a second period tally and Turcotte scored the empty netter with 18.1 seconds left to close the door once and for all.

"It was a good way to get started against a well-regarded hockey club," Browers said. "We have a tough task ahead of us being in the same group with world [world No. 2] Valanora [whom the Stars face next], but we have a chance if we continue to play well."

Meanwhile, Peterson said he was never worried even when Ad'ihan took a 2-1 lead early in the second period.

"Our lads were playing well. I believe the football team use the term "against the run of play" to describe goals scored when the better team is scored upon. That's what it felt like out there tonight. Both of Ad'ihan's goals came against the run of play."

Sarzonia, meanwhile, benefitted from facing a team that doesn't forecheck very heavily. The Stars defence was barely tested, and Peterson got stronger as the match progressed, according to team captain and defenceman Craig Langhorn.

"Matty seemed to turn on his focus a little more after they got the second goal on us," Langhorn said. "He was lights out after that." Peterson made a point blank save on left wing Robert Howe with 7:18 remaining in the second period to keep Ad'ihan from extending their lead to 3-1.

"That save was huge," Granato said. "If they score there, it makes it a lot harder for us."

So, too will facing Valanora in Matchday 2, but Peterson said the two difficult matches to start the World Cup will help.

"It will give us some toughness for the difficult matches that lie ahead," he said. "If we make it past the group stage, we'll already have been tested."

Plutoni ice hockey blog: WCoH 10, Matchday 1
Rockets fly moderately-high with draw

Plutoni was held to a draw by the Rockets of Newmanistan, 1-1. Despite a Mirsh Atzin goal 10:48 into the first period, Plutoni looked uncomfortable on defense and were forced into long, fruitless shots down the boards. Newmanistan ultimately equalized with 6:55 to play in the second period; Matt Kalinski set up the Rockets' captain, Jacques Carpentier, who scored. Though Plutoni got two power plays in the third period, they could not convert either of them.

The Rockets are not the only familiar face in the...New Cleethorpes group, fourth of the six groups of six. Jeffgordonville were also in group 4 of WCoH 10; they will face Plutoni on matchday four.

Comments:
1. combatant94: Can anyone help me? I'm getting error messages when I try to look at the groups.
2. seb: Mirsh Atzin? That's the best we can do? And how did Meefla Katlon jump on the first line? We have no reason to mess with what works.
3. bocky_boy: They're our best players. Yes, they're not experienced at this level, but it's the Pinnacles we're talking about (assuming you think the same of Afsell?). By the time they get "experienced", they've already been replaced.
4. seb: Yes, I think the same of Afsell. We'll have to wait and see, but this isn't really a good start.
5. icebaby: [1] No. And don't ask again.
You're not a vacuum; you're a black hole!
