Sam Spade And The Mystery Of The Vanishing Offence
Posted by ruth_babe

Six deep into WBC17 qualifying, and it's time for us to face the distinct possibility that the Things won't make the playoffs. Remember the complaints about group stage wonkiness during WBC16? Well, they're nothing compared to what we're seeing here: only one group top seed is first in their group, and three of six are in the bottom half. We've heard the theories - QSPN blame it on umpiring, #balloffoot blame it on the international negroid conspiracy, Momoko Koumura blames it on Sakiko Wakabayashi being "a total idiot" - but, in the case of the Things, you don't need to go looking too deep.

At this stage, Quintessence of Dust has the best pitching staff in WBC17, outshining even the Nordics and Blue Jays. They've conceded 14 runs - fully half of that given up by the fabled Rockets staff (and yes, yes, we know, all of the runs Newmanistan has ever conceded and will ever concede can be attributed to bad calls - come on) - which puts them at 1st in the tournament. They've also won only 2 games - which puts them at 5th in the group, and at Nowheresville in the tournament.

Without Masami, without Django, and with two young twentysomething rookies, the Quodite pitchers have averaged a +1.0 run differential per game, worthy of a better record than 2-4: and the blame for that lies squarely with the offence. After battering allcomers during the WBC16, the Things' hitters have simply not come up with the runs to match their pitchers' abstemiousness.

The latest encounter saw Luke Moran hold Saugeais to 2 runs (0 earned, thanks to an error at first y Anna Alaja) on 4 hits and one walk, striking out 4; his relief came up with another four strikeouts while allowing only three runners, none scoring. Yet in response only two players (Ana Justina with a single and a double, and Natalia with two singles) managed to get hits, and only four got on base at all (Momoko and Huang drawing walks).

Two players in particular, Sakiko and Anna, have absolutely bombed this tournament: Anna, for example, has allowed more runners through errors at first than she has collected bases herself. Yet it is probably Sakiko who is in greater danger of being cut from the team, with Ben Zimmerman lurking on the sidelines as a replacement outfielder. Thus far, her only saving grace has been Zimmerman's equally abysmal form, still hitless despite six pinch hit/substitute appearances.

The simple fact is, if the Things don't start scoring some runs soon it won't matter how many times their pitchers choke the opponents' output: they will lose games, we will fail to make the playoffs, and the mother of all inquests will be called for.

Last nights game against Cassadaigua made Whale's fans roar. The Whales went from position number 6 to position number 1 in the Classic so far. The six game rally before hand caused the Whales to win 9-2. In the game, pitcher Moe Peer was most affected by the rally of the last couple of days. He said after the game, "It's just great to go from a losing position to a winning position. I just hope we can keep the rally up and win." Moe hit a 350 foot homerun in the 3rd. One of the longest for pitchers in Whales history who are notorious for their pitchers not hitting the ball. This just shows what a extraordinary rally can do to people.

Didilidi didilidi deet deet deet!

"We're here at the Worm Hole as the second half of the group stage gets underway; it's Zwangzug set to take on Cathatis. Again. Well, hey, we're home this time, and we've got Loomis back on the hill. And taking the mound for the visitors?"

"You know, I can't quite--they've got, a pitching rotation which--obviously it's their call."

"Can you at least guess?"

"I'd rather not, all things being equal."

"Good grief. Someone who I shall assume is number 49, Mao Huo-Da, finishing his warm-up tosses now. And Hou-Da delivers to Aleplow."

"Actually, if that's your guess, it'd probably be Mao."

"Oh not again..."

"...and, you know what, that last one almost made it out of the infield. The Zebras are lucky they aren't losing already."

"Hey, if Cathatis is going to be this timid on the basepaths, it might cost them. Loomis' first pitch high."

"He's had more trouble then usual finding the strike zone, he's missed high a lot. This isn't good."

"Not his fault they're all short."

"The other team has tall players and short players. Loomis just can't find the plate, and that's why Mo got on base."

"This one's swung on and missed, there we go."

"One and one. Bases loaded, nobody out."

"Shakes this one off--hit to Blitch. They'll go for two. Aleplow, Craga, that's it--but Si-Mi comes in to give Cathatis the lead..."

"...I think that's Chart warming in the bullpen."

"Hmm, he hasn't messed up yet. Long, middle, it doesn't matter, just put someone in there who isn't too bad. Oh, pickoff move to first! Loomis nails Zhan-Nang, although nothing special considering the latter's speed."

"I'll take it, we're not out of this yet. Two outs, count still 2-2 on Cha."

"Now the pitch, this one will be--driven deep to right. Qiu-Ruo will come in, 3-0."

"Hey, could have been worse."

"Not really, Zhan-Nang would have never made it..."

"...you talk about a LOOGY. Chin Hui-Bo is playing every percentage in the book, this'll be Shang Gui-Hong."

"I don't actually talk about a LOOGY, but okay."

"Cathatis leading 3-0 here in the eighth, Zebras trying to get on the board at least."

"They're trying to win. Let's not dodge that. Ball one away."

"Right, right. One run at a time."

"Or three or four."

"Not now, there's only Craga on base."

"You know what I mean. This one will be blasted into left, extra bases, and Throop drives in our first run of the game..."

Summary of all WBC Games so Far

Game 1

Western Cuba won in a rather close game 7-4 against WBC New comers Ameriganistan. The score made it seem that the Cubans won a easy victory however the game was rather close. In fact during the 4th Inning Western Cuba was trailing by 2 to O when Philip Castro hit a walk off home run to start off the Fourth Inning. After that it was a close game till the 8th inning when Western Cuba and Ameriganistan were tied at 4.

However though during the 8th Lamb and Terravic singled and Castro hit another home run. Scoring three during inning setting up the win 7-4.

Game 2

Western Cuba won another game bringing there win streak up to 2 with a victory over Mantwenic. By a score of 4-2. Once again the Western Cuban Reds played poor again at the start. However though after the 6th inning things started to turn around. While losing 2 to Nil Western Cuba scored a run for every inning for the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th to win the game by a score of 4-2.

Game 3

A Winning streak was in the making. Stretching the streak to 3 games. However though today's game was closer than ever. In which the game ended up as 7-6 beating rivals Hossaim. In which the U-21 Team beat Hossaim's National U-21 in the final of the Keisler Cup.

However though today's game was different than yesterday's. Instead of playing poor at the start, and good at the end it was the exact opposite. With the Western Cuban Red's starting a 6-0 run by the 4th inning. However though after the 4th inning things turned bad with poor pitching by George Longoria, and poor batting by the Western Cuban lineup. However though there was a game saver in the 9th inning when Philip Castro hit another home run winning the game 7-6. His 3rd home run of the series.

Game 4

Another close game followed today with the Reds facing the Meddicia National Baseball team. Today however the Western Cuban offense played effective throughout the whole game. With Castro belting two home runs, and 1 home run being hit by Lamb. However though the Western Cuban Pitching Rotation continued to play poor with Tom Novak allowing four runs. Now many people are thinking about replacing the Pitching Rotation with the more fresh players coming of the U-21 National Team. Never less the Western Cuban Reds won again increasing there streak to four. By a score of 6-5. Philip Castro also increased his home run count to 5 in the series.

Game 5

Todays against Tocrowkia was probably the most anticipated in the whole group. #1 against #2. The game was indeed great however pitching once again was poor. With Evan Jackson allowing 5 runs. However though the Western Cuban offense shined in a victory. However though Philip Castro injured his knee in the game and would miss the next game against Amerigistan.

Game 6

Possibly because of the loss of Castro the win streak of the Reds, and the team being the undefeated team of the group and WBC ended with an upset. With a lose to Amerigistan by a score of 5-1. George Longoria once again had a poor game, and the Western Cuban offense didn't shine. However the good news is that Castro is returning for Game 7.

So the Nordics dropped another one in yet another slugfest. Man these are getting old. And now with a .500 record, the Nordics can't afford to drop even one more game if they want to make the playoffs. The sudden string of losses can be contributed to a few things, but we won't get into them here. Not worth it. Let's just hope they can turn it around.

"Swung on and missed to even the count."

"It's only going to get harder from here, really."

"Well, you can't judge teams by their rankings--especially this time around."

"Oh, I absolutely agree. But rankings-wise, yeah, we're just climbing towards then Tarrentum. And then, if we make the playoffs, who knows?"

"We could get lucky and face one of the weaker group winners? Into the outfield, another run comes in, good grief. 4-2..."

"...batting from the left tonight."

"Calls time, adjusts his batting gloves. Again. And stepping back into the box now, will take this one for a strike."

"Why do you think he keeps doing it?"

"More comfortable. What, do you have somewhere else to be?"

"No, of course not."

"Then actually provide the color commentary you're getting paid for, or shut up. Street lashes this into the outfield, Craga will come in. And they'll send Throop, who--gunned down at the plate."

"Should've settled for one, Throop can't really run anymore..."

"...the pitch comes in, it's...strike three! Caught looking! And we'll go to the tenth."

"And a very lucky Gordon Chane hustles off the mound..."

"...will trot down to first. Please tell me that's all for Chane?"

"Yes, Croes wants a lefty...calling on Neha Kader, international rookie for the Millers. Fast worker, too, doesn't dawdle between pitches."

"Good call, we'll need Racine for the save situation..."

"...are 2-5 in eleven-inning games."

"Okay, well, what good does that do us? One pitch to middle infield and we take it to the twelfth."

"One pitch into the bleachers and we don't."

"Thanks for your optimism. This one is...oh bleep. Is driven...into...the bleeping bleachers..."

"...For the record, in games that have reached the eleventh inning, the Zebras are 9-6."

"Shut up."

"Well, seven now."

Once again the Whales keep on moving forward. Like pitching coach Rob Dickenson says, "If life gives you lemons and you try to make lemonade but you fail, you just got to keep trying, and that is how we got into 1st place for division E." "This is the biggest comeback we've had since the Regional Classics in 1991. Let's keep it up Whales!!!" says fanatic Whales fan Steve Anderson. Todays game was extraordinary. In the 5th inning, center fielder Mandy Orwell hit a 3-run homer. Then an inning with 5 hits brought home two more runners in the 7th making the game 5-2. The catcher Finbar Curtin caught 2 runners stealing and stole a base himself in the 7th. He says, "This is the best game I've had in awhile. It's the Whales fans that keep me going." Today bars in North Orus were filled with jumping Whales fans celebrating their fifth victory.

Victory for Silver Beach- keeps pace for first place

Last night, in the WBC qualiying, in the 7th game, Grant Hendell went for a complete game, allowing 2 earned runs, in his first start since the no hitter at the same opponenet, and Silver Beach escaped with a 3-2 victory over the future hosts of this tournament. He followed up a no-hitter 15 strikeout performance, with an equally stunning 109 pitch, 4 hit, 2 earned runs performance, adding to his K total with 13 strikeouts against this team.

Silver Beach, instead of getting his usual runs through the long ball, played small ball to win this thing. In the first four innings of the game, a ball did not leave the infield, and each pitcher had 5 strikeouts so far in the game. In the top of the 5th inning though, the 37 year old lefty threw a hanging breaking ball, and it was smashed into the Lulika City River for the first hit of the game, to give the opponents a 1-0 lead. But Silver Beach came to bat in the bottom of the inning, and looked like a team on a mission. They leadoff the inning with their first hit, a single by Hank Johnson. On a failed hit and run, Hank Johnson was moved up to second base by Ramirez, with 1 out. Then, a sacrifice fly by De Winters moved him to third with two outs. After that, the catcher, Evan Sartorious, hit a single on the next pitch, to tie the game at 1 all, which would stay that way until the bottom of the 7th.

In the 7th inning, the heart of the order for Silver Beach, the 3-4-5 hitters were up to bat. On the first pitch, the crowd went wild with a leadoff single by Todd Jones, and then a ground rule double by Hank Johnson to put men on second and third with nobody out. Then, after a long, 12 pitch battle, Alphonso Ramirez came through AGAIN with a 2 run single to give Silver Beach a 3-1 lead, which they held on too. In the top of the 9th, Silver Beach survived some trouble.

On the first pitch of the 9th inning, the opponents hit a leadoff single. With things not looking that bad, Grant Hendell was pitching, and eventually, the opponenets had the bases loaded, down 3-1, with 2 outs. After that, a stunning throw by LaFave ended the game. A single was hit up the middle, and it was 3-2 Silver Beach. But the runner was rounding second base, and LaFave, the center fielder, came up GUNNING and threw the runner out at the plate, to end the game with a 3-2 victory for the Silverians.

With this win, they keep pace with North Orus, who is the same as them with a 5-2 record and 15 points. Though, with the way things are going, Silver Beach just needs to win 2 of the last 3 and beat Cassadaigua, the #2 team in the world, or just win out, to clinch qualification for the WBC. They do have a rematch with North Orus remaining, a potential victory there would rocket Silver Beach back to first place in the group, with three days remaining.

Churchma Rockets WBC 17 Coverage
5-1 win over Milchama brings Rockets to 4-3 through seven games in WBC 17
Churchma Sports Inc.

Behind a great pitching performance from #2 pitcher Darren Brickwell, the Rockets advanced to fourth in group play through seven games. After giving up a solo shot in the first inning, Brickwell went on to pitch a run-less 7.2 innings before being replaced by reliever Alonzo Sooseman. Brickwell gave up one earned run and four hits, while striking out ten batters and only walking one.

"Milchama is not a bad ball-club, so for Darren (Brickwell) to go out there and pitch that well is great for our squad and more importantly for his confidence. He's a hell of a player, and it's starting to show," manager Ben Barksdale said.

With three games left, the Rockets are in a hurry to jump into the top two or three teams in the group. Right now it's safe to say Newmanistan has all but locked up a playoff spot, leaving open one more spot that would guarantee a playoff appearance. If worst comes to worse, at the end of group play, the Republic has to be in at least third place to be hopeful in gaining a spot in the playoffs.

Next up for the Rockets is unranked Antoletia, who is just 2-5 through seven games. A win here and a Stuffed Taxidermists loss would hopefully raise Churchma into second place behind Newmanistan.

"I just need to get out there and throw my stuff and we'll be successful. If I can give us a solid six or seven innings then I know we'll win this game and get into shape to make it to the playoffs," starting pitcher Robert Zaino said.

Qazox at WBC17

Despite Suspension, Qazox wins with late rally.

Manager Linda Werth was suspended for 3 games following the outburst about the umpiring of the Qazox-Royalsoldiers game the other day. And through 4 innings, Qazox looked like their WBC playoff dreams were about to go down the drain until a dribbler in the 6th started a rally and now Qazox, with 3 games left, are still in the hunt and eliminated a tough Delaclava team from the playoffs.

After allowing back-to-back HR's in the 1st, Sean Carey settled down and only allowed 1 run over the next 6 innings, before turning it over to the pen. Greg Chambers, the hard-luck loser of the Saugeais game earlier, redeemed himself pitching a perfect 8th, and Robert Tokadden, despite allowing a lead-off double, earned his 2nd save of the WBC by getting the final 3 batters to flyout to center.

Hannah Carre, who started for Carl Holmes, a late scratch due to a sore right knee; provided the big hit in the 9th, a lead-off double that started a 2-run rally that broke the 3-3 tie. Up next for Qazox is Saugeais, who are currently 6-1. Qazox needs a win to keep pace, while a Saugeais' win woul clinch them a playoff berth, and possibly the group title.

If this game is rescorinated, disregard this.

The New Cleethorpes Enquirer
Players respond to criticism with convincing performance coupled with pummeling physical abuse

Sakiko Wakabayashi, Maija Peltosaari, and the players of the national baseball team yesterday responded to stinging criticism of the play that had seen struggle to a 2-4 record in the 17th World Baseball Classic group stage by not only staging a sure handed 9-1 demolition of Royalsoldiers, but also by personally beating the everliving shit out of every journalist, blogger, and petulent ex-boyfriend who had contributed to the deluge of scorn.

Wakabayashi, a fringe player who earned a spot in the regular lineup during WBC16, during which she was the team's offensive leader as well as showing newfound defensive prowess, has struggled mightily through the first week of WBC17 play, and had yet to rope a single extra base hit coming into the game against Royalsoldiers. But after drawing a walk and eventually scoring in the first inning, she drove in five runs on home runs in the second and seventh innings last night to return to form. After celebrating the win with teammates, she was seen chasing QBS analyst Brian Gobbleson, who had referred to as a "one hit wonder", round the Royalsoldiers baseball stadium carpark with a wet towel.

Meanwhile Peltosaari shrugged off the demons of her loss to the same team at The Frosty Dome by pitching a rare complete game as the Quodite staff continued their strong form. She allowed one earned run on six hits, striking out four and walking one, and kept her pitch count down - throwing only 98 pitches - enough to allow Jun Zhou to risk keeping her in through the ninth inning. After the game, Peltosaari declared herself "very pleased with the performance", "still eager to make the playoffs", and "ready to go kick that snivelling TBQ guy in the nads".

Other than purchasing a bag of oranges for Emily Sanderson (who went 1-4 with a stolen base and an outfield assist) - they don't leave a bruise when you smack someone in the ribs with them - Zhou himself from any particularly violent retribution, though he admitted that he was very pleased with both the pitching performance from Peltosaari and the fact that Anna Alaja (who went 1-4 and showed notably improved glovework at first, including grabbing a sharp line drive) made fully three baseball correspondents cry. He also vowed the team would do their level best "to inflict more defeats on our opponents, more crushing violence on our critics".

Excerpts from fangaffes.zz open chat

BearBooty: Okay, so, matchday seven (or was it six? I've lost count) was apparently brought to us by Out for Blood: Barnettsville's Entry into the WBC and the Plunk heard down the Penthoria..., a forthcoming release about the bygone Blue Jays.
Which got me thinking--are there any really good books about the Zebras? Trivia books full of stuff from the contemporary domestic leagues, yep. Halcyon sentences of extraordinary length recalling notable achievements in isolation and pre-Consolidation leagues, sure. Whatever the somethingmetricians are coming out with, yeah. But about the Zebras? Not so much.
So, if you got the chance to write a book about Zebras history, what would you call it?
shakir2: "Who is Thomas Grush? And Other Zebras You've Never Heard Of."
BearBooty: You're never going to let me live this down, are you?
shakir2: no
vanehawk: "Full of Bull: Our Stupid Relief Situation." Martin Loomis and Chela Palmer will each get their own chapter explaining why they're better than /actual relief pitchers/, and another chapter will belatedly praise Maren Ruud who I don't think any of us really appreciated until Croes showed up.
postmodernismftmeh: "0 run, 6 hits, or not" why we cannot turst "documentation", and the edconstructio of "great" WBC feats
mercer30:): Hmm, maybe "Catching Some Zs: Extra-Inning Games You Could Have Slept Through" (if WBC5 is any indication!)
bethedge: On that note. "A Moment of Static, or, We Did Win This Entire Thing So Why Is The Announcer's Position Still Cursed?"
syncmeister: Still working on a pun on "penguin". Give me some time.
shakir2: or maybe something just "Lovisa win."
vanehawk: If we're going for simplicity, "Bleep Matthew Shaporio."
kzone: "Time Trials," about the Third Summer Olympics and how we didn't boycott/didn't enter baseball at the Fourth.
vanehawk: Time Trials?
kzone: It just...feels like a good idea for a title.

"Well we suck"

"Yep we do"

"I thought this team was really going to go places"

"Me too but now we can't even beat a team like Churchma"

"Unreal man, at least everybody is 5-3 so if we win our last 2 games we can advance"

"Yeah but we're playing the two teams we lost to the first time so it's not looking good"

"Look it's a fraidy cat attitude like that that has us in this position in the first place"

"Not true, it's crappy play that has us in this position. We're 2-3 since that 3-0 start. That has nothing to do with attitude but all to do with quality. A good quality team would have beaten Newmanistan and would certainly have been able to beat at least one of Stuffed Taxadermists or Churchma"

"That's what yoouuuuuu think"

"Yes that is what I think because I'm correct. You know this which is why you're not responding to me with an argument but vague stupidity"

"That's what yoooouuuu think"

"See what I mean"

"In all seriousness here. We're a fine side, the Warriors are a team that is built to do very well at this tournament and a couple of bad results is not going to change that. We were on the road against Stuffed Taxadermists and we're a much better home team and Churchma still have to play Newmanistan again. Everything is stacking up in our favor to advance. We have a better run difference than both teams we're going through, no need to worry"

"Then why am I worried?"

"Because you have the same losing mentality you accuse me of. I understand because you're a Kreitsburg fan and used to failure but this is the national team and different"

"That was uncalled for but the Killers will be great next year, you watch. Those Pirates are going down. Anyway, this comes from a history of watching Milchamian international team. Do you remember the last successful one at anything? We haven't been good in the World Cup since the 30s and we haven't been good here since the single digits. We're not even the consensus best team historically anymore, some would say that honor goes to Newmanistan"

"Well that's just BS. Did Newmanistan ever win a World Cup of Baseball? Well we didn't either but we got to the finals twice which is much better than they can do"

"See nobody cares about things like that anymore, sorta like how nobody knows Hypocria anymore or Az-cz or The Lowland Clans or Bedistan. Face it Milchama is old and dated and our past does not propel future victories."

"Yes we're old but it doesn't matter because we're still good, at least at baseball. In soccer we suck now and there really ain't a way of changing that but we're still really really good at baseball. We're better than the stiffs of Churchma and Stuffed Taxadermists. We'll win you watch"

"Fine, I will and then be disappointed again"

"Ok then you can do that"

"I will"

"Good"

"Can you at least cheer for Milchama with me?"

"Sure"

"Thanks"

"Come on You Warriors!"

Qazox at WBC17

Big 1st Inning keeps playoff hopes alive.

A 6 run 1st inning proved to be enough as Qazox avenged their earlier loss to Saugeais 8-4 and tighted up the Group C playoff hunt. Qazox batted around for the 2nd time this WBC, getting 5 consective hits to chase Randy Blackman after just 1/3 of an inning. While the home team cut the lead to 6-4 after 5 innings, runs in the 6th and 7th put the game back out of reach for good. Juan Diego became the first Qazoxian starter in 10 years to win his 1st two starts. There was a bit of controversy in the 9th inning, as Issac Greene hit Paul Roland and the benches cleared. There were no punches thrown, so no suspensions, but Greene was tossed.

Now Qazox goes home to face Cotdelapoms and depending on the outcomes of the other group matches, could clinch a playoff berth.

The march to Amherst had been long and tiring for Newmanistanian troops. The days that had gone by had taken a lot out of them, and to top it off, there was little information as to what the baseball team had been doing during the World Baseball Classic. Probably winning, as they were expected too, but you could never be so sure. Knowing they could possibly be in a fight for their lives once they reached the Secristani capital city, all of the armed forces soon found out that there was something that could top their interest in baseball: fighting for their own survival. They had been able to overcome the light but growing resistance as they moved south from Secristani loyalists. They tried not to kill them, but rather take them prisoner so that other Secristanis would not start to see us as the enemy. This resistance still appeared rather unorganized, but there was a growing belief that they were going to have a tough fight in Amherst. They hadn’t heard much from Cassadaigua and Queen Cassie lately, and that was very concerning as there had to be a reason for it. Were the Dagans quietly awaiting their arrival like a national baseball team who provides no roster and media releases? The march to Amherst therefore stopped 75 miles outside of the city, with the Emperor also planning to deploy army batallions eastward into the country. For now, it was all about Amherst.

Upon taking their break, and preparing for their next step, General Freeman and Sargent Hillcrest took a moment to get some insight about what had been going on in the Classic.

“Churchma. They’re doing it again.” stated the General.

“Churchma? What?”

“Calling themselves the Rockets. But I guess imitation is as that cliche goes. But besides them, the team has taken care of business, and are 7-1 through eight games. Which is nothing to take for granted, given some of the other craziness going on in qualifying right now.”

“I like how the ladies are also getting the job done in the baseball. But they know just like we do here, that the toughest challenges that they will face still lie ahead. Tell me though, what is the other craziness going on?”

“Well Delaclava hasn’t won yet. But that’s nothing compared to Tocrowkia and Cassadaigua both being 4-4. And Sarzonia still has a losing record. Quintessence of Dust is also 4-4 and I hear that their media has been active, so that’s tough to figure out too.”

“What do you think might be the cause of this?”

“As Christina Sanders would say: blame it on the umpires. Perhaps opponents of the great nations are getting horrible calls in the name of desired parity or something. And the only reason we have not been affected is because we had a player punch an umpire twice, so they don’t mess with us. By the way, Jessica kicked ass in her next start.”

“Oh really, tell me about that.”

“Ok, we’ll start with that and then go back to the Tanzoria game. She got payback on Antoletia, almost tossing a no-hitter. Allowed one hit, an infield single.”

“Fuckin’ awesome!”

“Hell yes! Complete game shutout, not a walk, and fifteen strikeouts. She was, as they say, in the zone!”

“We must have kicked ass there.”

“Well, actually, we scraped by with a 1-0 win, and only had three hits ourselves, but two of them came in the 7th and were back to back doubles allowing us to get the win.”

“Have the bats been struggling?”

“No, that was just one game. In the game prior, we had 15 runs on 23 hits, and smoked Tanzoria by nine.”

“So 15-6? One game great hitting and a pitching start that won’t get us too excited, and the other the complete opposite. Were the results more balanced in the other game?”

“You could say that. 5-1 over the Taxidermists. Kaitlyn Ahearn had a nice bounce back.”

“That’s good, so 7-1 and in good position. Sounds familiar. Let’s go get Amherst!”

“Amen to that! Here we come, Amherst!!”

Okamoto beats Cotdelapoms at second try

The Things still linger in the bottom half of their group in WBC17 qualifying, but have finally improved to a .500 record with a 5-1 win over Cotdelapoms. Kunika Okamoto got the win, allowing one run, three hits and three walks in seven innings despite striking out only two batters. He was helped by some mostly sharp fielding, although Jim Gilmour was allowed to steal a base and Huang Li committed a rare error at second, her first since WBC15. The only run for the visitors came when Asbjorn Johnsen hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth, but they struggled to get on base thereafter and Herbie Black shut down the final 1.1 innings for the save.

For their part, the Quodite batters put Ray Quirk through a torrid time, collecting ten hits (only one of which, a fifth inning double for Sakiko Wakabayashi, was for extra bases) and eight walks. Sam "Speedy" Spade continued her good run with a 3-4, 1 SB showing, while Emily Sanderson and Anna Alaja, both struggling for form, each collected two hits. Momoko Koumura, 1-3 with 2 BB, scored two of the team's five runs.

    "Umpires to blame", says Alaja

Taking a cue from the international press, first basewoman Anna Alaja has joined in the chorus of condemnation of WBC17 umpiring. "The only reason we are at 4-4 at this stage is because of consistently shoddy, unfair calls by the degenerate band of blind charlatans masquerading as umpiring crews," said Alaja in an unusually forthright statement. "We should be 0-8; we're playing terribly. But our pitchers just keep getting the benefit of the doubt, and then next inning it's our batters' turn. It's like the umpires only have eyes for us." Coach Jun Zhou noted only that "we have perhaps been a little lucky".

Road Loss huge blow to Silver Beach chances

In the WBC qualifyihg, Louis De Graza helped put Silver Beach in a deep hole to begin with, as Silver Beach lost its last away game, 6-3, at Zirakul. His line was 5+ innings, wiht 8 hits, and 5 earned runs.

In the 2nd inning, things started to get bad for Silver Beach. After a 1-2-3 12 pitch first inning, it looked like it would be a pitcher's deul, as the lefty on the mound for the opponents struck out the side in order, in the first inning. But in the 2nd inning, De Graza got into some trouble. After the opposing catcher got a base hit to start things off, Auomi hit a ground rule double to put men on 2nd and 3rd, with nobody out. Then, De Graza made a terrible pitch, leaving his fastball hanging over the middle, and it was crushed to deep left center field, as their center fielder hit a 3 run shot to set off this record crowd of 44,922 in Zirakul.

Silver Beach had this deficit until the 6th inning. In the 6th inning, the #9 hitter, Jonah Miller, really struggling this WBC, hit a 434 foot BOMB down the right field line, to close the deficit to 3-1. But then in the bottom of the 6th, Silver Beach got into some more trouble. After walking the first two hitters, Louis De Graza was taken out by the manager. But the man who was put in, immediately served a pitch, and the pitch Travis York served was blasted into the seats, to let Zirakul take a 6-1 lead.

In the top of the 9th, it was just too little too late. The opposing pitcher had gone 8 innings, and was coming in to finish off Silver Beach. But they had some life in them still. Todd Jones had a leadoff double to start the inning, then Hank Johnson replaced him with a double to make it 6-2 Zirakul. Alphonso Ramirez moved him to third with a sac fly, and then De Winters hit a sac fly himself, to make it 6-3 with 2 outs. The opposing lefty was withdrawn from the game, pitching 8 2/3 innings, with 11 strikeouts, 7 hits, and 3 earned runs. Their closer came in and slammed the door, as Silver Beach fell to 5-3, and out of pace for first place in the division.

Their chances are still strong. They get the #2 team in the world at home, and with a win against them(they beat them on the road) and a Zirakul loss, Silver Beach will clinch qualification into the next round. But they must win first, and playing the world's #2 team is not easy. But they have no away games left, and the last two are both at home. If Silver Beach pulls this out, it will be a great upset and stunner to make it to the second round.

Tarrentum Falcons Sporting News
Put THAT in Your Pipe and Smoke It!

A tremendous display of power over the past four games has vaulted the Falcons into 1st Place in Group D. After a stunning 10-2 defeat of Mossulia (capped off by homeruns by Dessea Vallena-Favella and Brenaccio Macca) the Falcons pushed ahead in the Run Differential category, the Group tiebreaker. Right now the Falcons are sitting pretty with their 4 game winning streak. However they face tough opposition tonight against those Zwangy Zebras of Zwangzug. There will be no love loss between the two teams as their WBC all-time series currently stands (according to our "top-of-the head" crack research team) 5-1 for Zwangzug. This game could be different however as the Zebras have failed to show up for some of their games.

Many wonder what could have caused this streak and Ferdinand Cossomo, manager of the Falcons, offers up a logical explanation. "Baseball is full of streaks and slumps. Whether it is hitters, pitchers or teams, the people get 'hot' and 'cold' without any reason. We're looking to hold onto this streak by any means." By any means indeed. Sources close to the team have pointed out some of the quirks the players are sticking with to continue the winning:
  • Xavier Gradoni hasn't shaved since the loss to Zwangzug
  • Valerio Utteroni hasn't washed his dog Homer since hitting a home run to beat Pontinur
  • Dessea Vallena-Favella hasn't shaved her underarms this entire Classic
  • Gina Torretta hasn't washed her trousers since the win against Pontinur
  • Fironte Sareb hasn't slept in his bed for four days (he is preferring the video-room sofa)
  • Will 'Griz' Franklin hasn't shampooed his hair for four days - it's beginning to dread.

Yes, these and others await you and your senses if you step into the Falcons locker room to speak with the players. But what works, works. While not one to mince words, Woodrio Tucia said it plainly: "I haven't stopped smoking the pregame joint since we beat Pontinur!" TSC officials were said to be looking into Tucia's comments but his agent has clearly stated Tucia was joking. Whatever it is, a win over the monochromatic Zebras means a top 6 spot for the Falcons in the playoffs. Their highest finish during the Group Stage yet.

With Bertrando Sabre set to start, Fr. DeSalvo has said that they are looking at a short leash for their number 5 hurler. "We can't be too careful. Just as Saul and the Israelite Army kept looking for a savior to fight Goliath, we too will be looking for our 'David' if things start to go downhill in the game."

"That's it! I'm taking of my shirt! We might make it this year!" says crazy shirtless Whales fan Greg Williams. He is one of the many Whales fans yesterday watching the game over a giant TV in Oru City. "This has been the best year for the Whales yet. I truly think we might have a chance this year. All of our players are excited and motivated. I truly think this is great. I mean 9-2! That is a great score. As long as we have this rally, we might win," says overly excited Whales general manager.

In yesterdays game, Big Phillip hit an inside the park 2 run homer in the 2nd. It was a line drive into right field. Which the right fielder fumbled. Then he threw a bad throw to third causing 2 runners to cross the plate. "It was epic!" Big Phillip says. Then, in the 6th and the 7th, pitcher Rick Knotech, struck 3 batters out. Totalling up a whopping amount of K's.

"GO WHALES!!!" exclaimed 30 Whales fans unsurprisily holding beer cans during yesterdays game.

Qazox at WBC17

Clutch hit in 9th keeps Qazox alive.

Tied at 2-2 in the bottom ofthe 9th, after a brilliant pitching duel between Pierre Alix and Jerri Werth, a bloop single to center scored Daniel Jae and sent Qazox to a do-or-die show down with Quintessence of Dust in 2 days. Werth went 8 innings, allowing just 2 runs, 5 hits, and 1 walk while striking out 12. Alix went 8 innings as well, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 11. Bernard Le Roy gave up a lead-off double to Jae in the 9th and Arthur Thomas' bloop single scored the winning run.

Now Qazox goes to face Quintessence of Dust on the road. Currently Qazox is in 13th place, but leads the wild-card standings, which only involve the 3rd placed teams. With a victory, Qazox would clinch at worst a Wild-card berth. With losses by both Saugeais and Royalsoldiers, a Qazox win would clinch the Group title and a top 6 seed. If Qazox loses, they will be eliminated from the playoffs, unless Royalsoliders lose as well, then Qazox could get in based on a better RD than Royalsoliders.
