Lulz galore.

Could I get a recap of his reasoning--I'm not in a video friendly environment at the moment.

Basically Putin says to Sweden, UK and USA "given how you're treating Assange for revealing your little dirty secrets, you don't hold any higher moral ground when it comes to freedom of press and human rights - hence don't go around saying 'Russia's evil because it oppresses journalists' as it has always been your wont".

This would because none of those nations has had him murdered in the street?

Given that using the mob or security services to murder him hasn't been tried yet, I don't think it's particularly comparable to what he's been up to.

Generally, trying to get Anon to stop doing what it does backfires spectacularly on the people that try.

Rape is an act of Heroisim? To be fair they have a wide catagory of what is defined as "rape" in Sweden.

I believe the poster meant that leaking was the act of heroism and that the rape charge is merely an excuse to get him put away for leaking confidential documents.

That is what you meant, right Cameroi?

True, but releasing the documents isn't nessacerily a crime. His sources have committed crimes (possible they it could be considered treason) but he himself has not.

I think if the US is going to immorally and illegally (?) put pressure on Assange and WikiLeaks to stop free press and freedom of speech, then these hackers should make their point against the corporations that allow themselves to be cowed by the US government and its attack on basic human freedoms. It's their right to do so, and power to them if they think demonstrating their rights is worth prison time. Ghandi thought so, MLK thought so, and now they think so.

An American court can't convict Assange, so they're doing their best to shut him up. So much for being a bastion of freedom and democracy.

Which, of course, is why he was tried with rape. He still gets put away, but without all that bothersome wetwork.

Not that I hold the above, but I imagine the reasoning goes as such.

I'm not sure if the US has done anything illeagal so far in shutting down and arresting Assange. Besides even if the Govt. breaks the law it only brings you down to that level if you break the law as well. If they did something legaly like filing a lawsuit or similar act they'd get more respect and more support.

Whistleblowing is not morally equivalent to the offense it sheds light on, even if it's criminalized. We need to be protecting people who leak evidence of gross corruption and abuses, if we're ever going to have moral leadership (to the degree that that's possible).

I wouldn't doubt it for a second. You don't just get "secret diplomatic cables" by chance. Some government happened by them and pissed off at the USA offered them to WikiLeaks. Shitstorm ensued.

The alternative is he hacked the US government.

It's far simpler than that: A private in the Army, named Bradley Manning was about to lose hisjob, and maybe even be arrested, because he assaulted another soldier. He had access to a server containing a very large portion of the classified material that had been produced bythe government. He downloaded it directly from the server, and sent it off to Wikileaks as a way to get back at his boss for firing him. It's actually not a particularly interesting story--unless you find people being petty interesting.

Well, this solves the entire thing. Some jackwagon deciding to jeopardize the very lives of those who stand in harms way is allowed to be considered a hero by a damn extremely liberal city because he was a traitor to his country and everyone who reveals information that can get people killed should be considered heroes by the state of California.

Fixed. I don't see how any cities or states enter into this matter. California is also not the liberal paradise some people think it is, it is often very very conservative.

What Andaluciae said is a matter of public record. That's where the diplomatic cables came from, according to the US government.

What you said doesn't acknowledge what Andaluciae said. It neither agrees nor disagrees, it is irrelevant to what it supposedly replies to.

At the very least, you could retract your "some government happened by them" guess.

Okay, I got it now. :3
