Forgotten Conflicts Volume 2

Postby Vandengaarde » Sun Oct 17, 2010 12:14 pm

One of the very first things I ever wrote on these forums was about minuscule conflicts that have been forgotten. Well, it's been over a year I think, so I feel like doing this all over again. What are some forgotten conflicts that you think are either hilarious, depressing, or generally memorable?

My choice to start this off is a war that occurred in America in the second half of the 1800's, a fight on the soil of the United States against an enemy who had come from the very same land.

I am talking, of course, about the Dakota War of 1862, a conflict in southern Minnesota that I only know about due to a history class and have never heard talked about since.

Basically, the traders on native reservations were cheating the tribes, and they decided to rebel against the state of Minnesota. The U.S. army was called in to strike them down, but hundreds of townspeople were killed by swarms of natives, causing people to move from their old homes and the largest hanging in U.S. history, when 38 natives were hanged in Mankato, Minnesota. Originally, 303 natives were to be hanged, but Abraham Lincoln pardoned many of the death sentences.

Now it is your turn, NSG! Somehow turn this in to a debate about Nazis, I dare you!

3. I'm conservative on social issues and liberal on economic issues.
4. I won't bother looking for six million sources for you.
5. I'm not always serious!

All of those but the Invasion of Grenada are fairly well known, at least in the U.S.

In the education system's defense, Shay's Rebellion and the Whiskey Rebellion lasted one battle and the Spanish-American war didn't accomplish much.

Not one of those has had a lesson that lasted more then five minutes. Grenada and the Kosovo War are never mentioned. Shay's and Whiskey are mentioned only in passing. My classes have spent more time on Korea (Not much) then all 5 of those conlicts combined.

LOL - if they were memorable, they wouldn't be forgotten, would they?

Anywho, here are some good ones from US history:
The Milwaukee Bridge War
The Red River Bridge War
The Iowa-Missouri Border War
The Dorr Rebellion
The Peoria War
The Kirk-Holden War
Fries's Rebellion
Jaybird-Woodpecker War
War of the Regulation

The Mormon War is close, as is the US intervention in the Russian Civil War.

The Ifni War is almost unknown.

The Quasi War and the Barabary Wars aren't as well known as it should be, considering their importance (had it not been for them, the US constitution would certainly look different, and might possibly not exist at all.)

The ongoing insurgency in the Philippines is oft ignored, despite US forces being involved.

This is a good example. :)

At least the San Juan Pig War, the War of Jenken's Ear, and the Soccer War, which are all too well known for their odd names and causes.

The Whiskey Rebellion might be known by name, and maybe Shay's, but alot of the little wars and rebellions of US history are truely forgotten outside of the trivia books. The Spanish-American war certainly isn't forgotten, and neither is Korea. The DPRK's antics keep the Korean war fresh.

Grenada and Kosovo don't really count, as they're only "forgotten" by kiddies who weren't born yet.

The Panama War over Xmas 1989 seems to have really been forgotten though.

It's not forgotten, it's just rather hazzy who won.

The Americans like to sing about the Battle of New Orleans, but forget about the White House burning and utterly failing to take Canada.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Spain was hardly a superpower, it was a hollow shell. And the USA wasn't even close to being third world by that point...
