The article:
Robyn Martins: Twain’s raw truth of nation’s history is a much better lesson.
A new edition of Mark Twain’s masterpieces will soon be released, and those of us who revere classic American literature are none too happy about it, and for varying reasons.
NewSouth Books has published “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn,” combining the two stories into one volume. The combining of the tales isn’t what is so irksome about the book. It’s the revising of the original text that is causing such a stir.
Some purists believe literature should never be tampered with for any reason. But I’m more concerned with what I see as a missed opportunity to improve education in the schools we’re trying to protect.
In this new edition, editor Dr. Alan Gribben has replaced every instance of the N-word with the word “slave” to eliminate a point of contention for people who want the books banned in schools. The stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are among the most challenged books in school libraries, and the hope is that by cleaning up some of the language, the stories will become more palatable to people who would otherwise not read them.
Under most circumstances, eliminating such a charged word for school children would seem like a good idea, but in the case of the Twain stories, the N-word is used to realistically depict the social attitudes that were once widespread in our nation’s history. Never spoken gratuitously, the term adds a layer of credibility to characters who demonstrate the irony of one race claiming superiority over another, while the supposedly lower race exhibits higher character traits even in the face of extreme adversity.
I recognize that as a Caucasian, I can’t fully understand how painful the N-word may be to African Americans, although I can sympathize to some extent. I bristle at many words used to demean women, to make us feel Less Than, and I wish those words would disappear from the lexicon. The N-word is so offensive, we don’t even write it in its entirety and use code to signify what no decent person would dare speak.
But I think instead of modifying literature to suit sensitive readers, wouldn’t our students be better served by a more nuanced and thorough education? Wouldn’t it benefit them more to learn the cause and effect of the best and worst of human nature, and to be taught the raw truth of our nation’s history so they don’t repeat the mistakes of the past?
We’ll allow students to read a book that includes slavery, and we tell them slavery and bigotry are very bad things, but I think we can trust them to learn a step further. I believe our students are capable of reading a term like the N-word in a realistic setting, as painful as it may be, and then understanding the meaning behind its use. By whitewashing their reading material in order to avoid offending them, or their protective parents, we’re suggesting they aren’t capable of learning at such a level, and we’re shielding them from the full truth.
Some whites used the N-word to deflate the black race in order to inflate themselves, a deplorable trait that is often at the root of conflicts throughout history. So, let’s use Twain’s original stories to teach students that fact, and then let’s teach them there is no place for such a practice in our society.
We have set aside today to honor a man who devoted his life to the cause of racial equality and brotherly love, Martin Luther King, who said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”
Gribben has said that this new edition of Twain’s classics is not meant for academic scholars who are still free to read from other editions. I’d suggest it’s not meant for school children, who may learn to think critically if given proper guidance in reading Twain’s original literature.
In fact, let’s start today of all days and open up to page one where young Huck says plainly of the Tom Sawyer story, “That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth.”

Doubleplus ungood. But as Bradbury put it in Fahrenheit, the government didn't need to do it -- we'll lap it right up. Case in point: the edited versions of Hollywood Blockbusters to make them more family friendly....
