Farn is a Summer born nation :O

I happily was able to join before the summer, however people speculated that I was an early summer.

With the NS lingo thread could we sticky that somewhere?

So have there been famous people and/or nations that have made a large impact on NS, through either forums or gameside?

Meh. Define 'famous'? There's always one group or other who has someone they feel stands out for whatever reason. Fame is a nebulous sort of concept in any case. For every one of them someone puts forward, someone else will be "Um ... who?"

As for real-world famous, who knows? And does it really matter? And can it even be proved? And more likely I rather doubt it, unless you count again, those among us who have certain accomplishments under their belts in their fields or circles. The site owner, for instance.

Moving on?

I don't see how it's going to impact GP nor RP,neither needs a puppet to act straight away - plus (not sure codewise) there could be a check for established players (1 month +)

I know I'm not the first to say this, but I think NS Summer 2013 never fully came to a close. We are in the early days of eternal summer. I'm curious as to how the leftovers will interact with the new NS-Summer. Personally I think all of NS should take my approach to NS-Summers. Abandon ship for two months while the summer time trolls run rampant than return as things calm down. Does wonders for your mental health. You have the ability to read back and see some of the laughs,, meet the worthwhile people that joined and stayed, and you don't have to put up with the majority of the trolls.

It affects the RP boards as well, although to a lesser and less mod-actionable degree.

The problem is summer won't go away if the good talent leaves for the summer. You'd be making an Eternal and Infernal Summer.

A long time ago, I remember Nerv issuing a warning to [violet] for flamebait, and I believe it was directed at Nazis. What'd happen if [violet] does something this summer in response to an influx of Stormfronters that warrants a temp ban? :p

I'm finding this summer phenomenon to be very interesting. Just yesterday i had been browsing a few regions and I saw an influx of newly made nations moving into them all at the same time. "Must be one person and their puppets" I thought. Out of curiosity I checked to see if any of them had posted in the forums, and sure enough a few of them had. And each of those nations that I assumed to be the same person seemed to take a different stance on various topics, some IC and others in OOC threads. All I could wonder then was when would this person just get bored and start trolling because they believe their identity is safe among so many different nations. The CTE rate of puppets at the end of the summer must be enormous.

The moral: When in doubt, blame NS Summer. Because blaming the mods will only hold you over for so long. ;)

NS Summer is the folk devil? (And I didn't even post in that thread; having read it more carefully I think saying posters who join in the Northern Hemisphere's Summer are an NSG folk devil much like teenage libertarians, except the latter don't really seem all that common anyway, or teens more generally.)

Dejanic wrote:I think this whole NS summer trend has probably created some sort of paradox, whilst of course there will be genuine neo-Nazis and school kids who post in the summer and fulfil the trend, I get the feeling that we are going to see a lot of normal users here purposely fulfilling the ns summer stereotype "for lolz", probably on puppets and such.

I think it woks more like this.

1) There is a rise in offending during the Northern Summer: this phenomenon is dubbed the NS Summer.
2) People talk and complain about this, awareness spreads. NS Summer is a household name.
3) People begin to expect it and go looking for evidence.
4) Increasingly wide types of posts are characterised as part of the NS Summer.
5) The 2012 US Presidential Election does add some additional fuel.
6) The NS Summer is now an underlying assumption. Even more posts are characterised as part of this. Discussion feeds into and causes a reaction among genuine summer trolls and people on the receiving end of self-righteous anger alike, worsening the problem.
7) People begin talking of the Eternal Summer despite there not really being any real evidence to support this.

The Serbian Empire wrote:The problem is summer won't go away if the good talent leaves for the summer. You'd be making an Eternal and Infernal Summer.

I prefer on topic trolls to off topic "good talent" spamming boards with the aforementioned "Mr Summertime Nopost" posts. At least the former contribute to the discussion even if it's dishonest, offensive, ill informed and/or inane. (It's when they're long term, 75% occasional trolls does prompt the 20% trying to have a conversation as well a cause spam from the 5% ranting about the fly-bys, but in the long term dishonest posts are incredibly frustrating.) Every thread, whatever its origins, has the potential for decent discussion... but it's probably more likely to attract spam from probably not so well meaning long term posters or a lock directed at the OP only, not the 10 pages of okay stuff.

I'd like to note for the record that I really do think that going ahead and adding euphemisms like 'Mr. Summertime Noposts' or 'Ah, summertime' to the existing rules won't help anyone. Given that it can take several hours for moderation to lock and/or review threads for evidence of trolling when reported in Moderation, escalation can become an issue in 'summertime' threads, leading to a lot more work for the mods when they do slog through the thread and a lot more warnings for the people who get baited into a heated argument with the day-old poster with a default flag and unpleasant views about immigrants.

Considering that said mods often complain (rightly so) about people 'feeding the troll' or about having to slog through said 30-page argument about how Hitler was actually on to something, perhaps it'd be better if posters - particularly considering that many posters here have been here long enough to recognize 'summertime' visitors - weren't completely barred from trying to point out to others that the poster with a default flag ranting about Obama might not be arguing in good faith.

NSG just happens to have the problem of debating anything even if its a clear troll. It only shows badly when summer hits and we have nothing else to debate except a FST-style "SEX IS BAD IF YOU DO IT FOR FUN!" thing or Karinizstan's religious bullshit. At least it's better to look at compared to the garish spam we get from these guys.

Aside from that, NSG is probably more judgmental to people that annoy them faster than any mod could be annoyed.
