The Burchadingan International Squad - Die Adler

GK: Hans Lang - 22 - 22 year old Hans Lang can look back on his debut international campaign with his head held reasonably high. Despite being the one in goal during the 4-0 thumping by Kagdazka and Pazhujebu in the AOCAF semis, the now first-choice keeper for Oberliga champions Dynamo Dresden looks set to make a name for himself on the world stage. Lang began his career at the Berlin Academy, and quickly established himself as a player to watch. He earned a scholarship to move up to Dynamo Dresden's academy at 16 years of age, where he won the club's coveted Young Player of the Year award, playing as the Youth Squad's number 1 goalkeeper. Aged 18, he was 'promoted' as the club's substitute goalkeeper, but failed to impress in his first 3 outings, effectively dooming his Dresden career. He was loaned to several Second Division teams, earning the praise of pundits for his imposing stature and excellent reflexes. At the same time, he was often criticized for his inconsistency, often being unshakeable in one match, to totally out of his depth in others. Following the AOCAF XXXIII campaign, Dresden appointed Lang as first-choice goalkeeper.
GK: Rudolf Hohenzollern - 18 - Prince Rudolf Ernst Hohenzollern, third in line to the throne, began football as a hobby, just like many of his fellow citizens of his age. While playing for his school team, Rudolf earned the admiration of a certain Deval Enke, then national manager, and was drafted into the Burcharest Academy. 3 years after his draft, Enke is gone, but Markus Klogh has decided to honour his predecessor and has included the prince as his second-choice goalie. Hohenzollern is no slouch in the net, and he's a good all-round keeper with no apparent speciality, and that's both his strength and weakness. With Hans Lang having been on duty for every match of the AOCAF Cup, young Rudolf still eagerly awaits his first international cap.

DF: Hermann Stuck - 19 - Stuck started his career by joining the Leipzig Academy, and after just a year, earned a spot in VFB Leipzig's Youth Team. Stuck was instrumental in VFB's victory at the Jagermeister Cup, the premier Youth Cup in Burchadinger. His big break came when Leipzig's left-back, Philipp Zeiger suffered a career ending injury. VFB, suffering a shortage of defenders, promoted Stuck to the first squad at 17 years of age, and he promptly established himself as the new first choice. Despite his obvious ability, Stuck has been dogged by personal problems ever since his childhood. His parents divorced when he was 8, and his family has since suffered problems from the frequent household fight to suicide.
DF: Adrian Niculae (C) - 21 - Back in Burchadinger, young Adrian Niculae has been hailed as a hero after captaining the national side to third place in the 33rd AOCAF Cup. Credited with reigniting the team after the disappointing draw with Cheergirls, Niculae looks forward to the possibility of captaining Die Adler to their very first World Cup Finals. Niculae was born in Hagi, near Burcharest, and attended the Burcharest Academy. His family moved to Timisoara when he was 17, and in the process, young Niculae joined FC Timisoara's Youth Academy. Originally a midfielder, Niculae was shifted to the defender's spot due to the club's shortage of defenders. Niculae was made captain of the Youth Squad, and led the team to an impressive 4th place in the Commerzbank Super League, the Burchadingan Second Division with a team that had a previous best of 15th. The next year, he led Timisoara to 3rd place, scoring 3 goals, and earning the respect of his fellow competitors in addition to the eyes of people such as Magnus Dyrekken of Dynamo Dresden and Markus Klogh, who made Niculae national captain with little hesitation. A superb tackler and header, Niculae rarely makes mistakes, but when he does, he almost always gets a card. Usually the red one…
DF: Hermann Paul Meier - 20 - Hermann Paul Meier will most likely be remembered for his stinging 25th minute drive that put Die Adler in the lead against Krytenia in the AOCAF Cup quarter-finals. A product of the Bielefeld Academy, a 15-year old Hermann Paul Meier refused offers from clubs such as Berlin Blitz to join his local team, FC Bielefeld. He made regular appearances in the Youth Squad, but he was unable to break into the Regular Team until his 18th birthday, when he came on as a substitute against Dynamo Dresden, the Burchadingan giants. Despite lacking the natural talent of other players such as Stefan Danner, Meier is applauded as a player with endless amounts of determination, never giving up and always giving his best, and it is thanks to this that he gets his chance at the very top.
DF: Wolfgang von Elius - 20 - von Elius, son of Reichsgraf Maximilian von Elius, the patriarch of a noble Rhineland family, originally didn't think himself as much of a football player. In fact, he fancied himself as a tennis player, and was a well known figure in regional circles for his ability as a tennis player. However, he also spent his spare time playing football, and he gained recognition playing for his school team in inter-school competitions. At 15 years of age, he hung up the racket and began focussing solely on football, eventually making his way into the FC Klon Youth Team, despite not partaking in any football academy whatsoever. He participated in 56 games for the Youth Team, before being promoted to the Regular Team. Renowned for his ball control, von Elius has a tendency of leaving his position to go forward, as in, the opponent's box, leaving a gaping hole waiting to be exploited. He appeared a handful of times in the AOCAF Cup, substituting Hermann Paul Meier on all occasions, and proved himself a formidable and fearless foe to opponents.
DF: Eugen Goian - 21 - Born in the historical city of Suceava, Goian signed for Foresta Falticeni, a local team, when he was 17. Racking up experience playing for the Youth Club, he was eventually promoted to the first team, celebrating a win on his debut. Unfortunately, it would be the team's only win of the season, and they were eventually relegated to the Super League. Despite the rather lackluster performance of the team as a whole, several pundits highlighted Goian as a star in the making. Goian is an extremely physical player, and he has racked up a rather unenviable amount of fouls and cards. This may be the reason Markus Klogh has decided to keep him on the bench.
DF: Aart Krabbe - 19 - Krabbe is one of two ‘new faces’ of Die Adler, having not been on the squad for the AOCAF Cup. Krabbe was signed by Dynamo Dresden 2 seasons ago, being described by Dresden manager Magnus Dyrekken as ‘fully committed and a superstar in the making’. An offensively-minded player, Krabbe is very much a support player more than a defender, blitzing past opponents and then setting up his teammates, and on occasion, goes for goal himself. Utilized as a centre-back by Dresden, he’s also adept at being a defensive midfielder and/or central midfielder.

MF: Jochen Winkelhock (VC) - 22 - One of Die Adler's standout players during the AOCAF campaign, Jochen Winkelhock enters the World Cup qualifiers on stellar form, being the current joint-top scorer in the Oberliga. Winkelhock was born in Waiblingen, and attended the Stuttgart Academy when he was 13 years old. He began his career at VFB Stuttgart aged 17, and scored on his debut, earning the Englebert Bonus, a 10,000 Reichsmark award given to a player scoring on his debut. He spent 3 years with Stuttgart before moving to Star Burcharest, one of the Burchadingan giants. He began his Star career in style, scoring in the season opener against Berlin Blitz, and following it up with 7 more goals throughout the season. He was selected as the GGP Most Popular Player following the season. A good all-round player, Winkelhock is the national squad's free kick taker in addition to being Vice-Captain.
MF: Sebastian Krumm - 21 - Krumm joined FC Koln from FC Remagen as a trainee when he was 17, training alongside Wolfgang von Elius. He played his first match for the first team as an 18 year old. Initially, he played as a central defender, on the left-hand side of a back three. Krumm became a highly versatile player first as a centre-back, then a left-back. He then moved to left-midfield before establishing himself as a centre-midfielder. Krumm is the corner taker for the national team.
MF: Mihai Munteanu - 19 - Mihai Munteanu's AOCAF Cup campaign was one of ups and downs, so to say. Along with Arnd Korbel, Munteanu provided fantastic crosses and passes from the flanks, constantly dodging opponents with his pure speed. However, he also had 2 goals disallowed, which in the Burchadingan media's opinion, has shaken his confidence. Munteanu was born in Cluj-Napuca. He was considered one of the most promising graduates of the Transylvania Academy. He spent a full year with the FC Cluj Youth Squad before being loaned to Hoffenheim for first team experience. He returned to Cluj after a year, and established himself as the left-wing midfielder of the club, retaining this position for the national team. A speed demon in every sense of the word, goes by the nickname of 'Der Blitz', and has an impressive amount of assists for his amount of experience.
MF: Leonard Lotterer - 21 - Leonard Lotterer's AOCAF Cup was one of relative anonymity. He did not grab the headlines like Dimitrie Cuclin, Jochen Winkelhock or the 'KM' duo of Munteanu and Korbel did, but in reality, he was a crucial part of the Die Adler machine, providing good link-ups with his teammates. Lotterer was born and raised by a middle-class family in Duisburg. He played almost all of his childhood football for his school. During an inter-school tournament, Lotterer caught the eye of Dynamo Dresden scout, Steven Hansen, who convinced him to play a game for the Dynamo U-16 team in a friendly against the Burcharest Academy All-Stars. Lotterer proceeded to score twice, and earned a contract with the team shortly thereafter. Lotterer was also a star in his school's tennis and athletics team, and he was awarded Athlete of the Year by his school for 5 years in a row.
MF: Arnd Korbel - 20 - The 'K' in the 'KM' duo, Korbel's speed and fearlessness proved to be vital parts of the Burchadingan AOCAF campaign. Korbel grew up in Berlin and attended the Berlin Academy, quickly gaining a fearsome reputation for his blistering speed and ability to outrun the opposition. In his first year at Berlin Blitz, he scored 10 goals, and established himself as a fan favourite due to his bubbly personality. Other than his speed, Korbel is also known for his precise passes. His only drawback at first glance would be his height, rendering him unable to achieve much in the air.
MF: Marius Costin - 19 - Costin was born in Burcharest, and attended the Burcharest Academy. As a 13 year old, he appeared in a series of commercials for fast food chain G&M, doing football stunts to promote the Burchadingan Premier League. Beginning his career in the Burcharest Academy, Costin was picked up by Star Burcharest and earned a reputation as an extremely physical player. Costin is known as a tough tackling midfielder.
MF: Volker Schneider - 20 - The youngest of 4 children, Volker Schneider was born in Heidelberg, and attended the nearby Stuttgart Academy. Whilst his inability to head and his relatively weak shots tend to leave both himself and his team in some sort of trouble, Schneider makes up for it with his speed and his extremely accurate passes. Schneider appeared a couple of times in the AOCAF Cup, subbing for either Mihai Munteannu or Arnd Korbel in high-profile matches, such as the Krytenia encounter in the quarter-finals.
MF: Andreas Muller - 22 - Coming from the football-rich region of Rhineland-Palatinate, Andreas Muller started his career playing for second-tier side Landau, before moving to Mainz. He spent 3 years playing for the Youth Team, before making his Premier League debut at the age of 20, playing for Bayern Munich. He made an astounding start to his Munich career by being an important part of Munich's 6-1 mauling of Wolfsburg. More of a support-player, Muller prefers to setup goals instead of actually scoring them. Muller has yet to play a full game for the national team at this period of time, but he has come on as a substitute a handful of times, and looks set to get at least 1 full game in the near future.
MF: Gheorghe Beta - 21 - A tall man at just over 6ft 6, Gheorghe Beta uses his physical size to give him an advantage whilst in the air, and indeed, the majority of his goals have come from headers. Born in Burcharest, he attended the Burcharest Academy, and was quickly signed up by CFR Cluj. Beta immediately impressed by scoring 10 goals in his debut season, but he was released following a flare up between himself and the board of directors. He was quickly signed by Berlin Blitz, where he quickly gained popularity amongst the fans. Scoring 5 goals in his debut year for the team, Beta was applauded for his number of assists, helping Blitz to its first top 5 finish in 10 years. Previously listed as a striker, Gheorghe Beta has been 'reformed' into an attacking midfielder by Markus Klogh, but he still plays for Berlin as a striker, and is ready to replace any one of the striking pair of Dimitrie Cuclin and Rudolf Rosemeyer if needed.
MF: Ralf Gottorf - 23 - Ralf Gottorf missed the AOCAF Cup through injury, having been previously shortlisted by Markus Klogh. An extremely agile player, he tends to dodge past players before going for glory. This is, though, one of his weaknesses, as his selfishness tends to prevent any sort of co-operation within the team, with possible goals gone begging simply because he was not intent on passing or crossing over to his teammate. At 23 years of age, Gottorf is the oldest player in the squad.

ST: Dimitrie Cuclin - 18 - The golden boy of Burchadingan football, Dimitrie Cuclin ended the AOCAF Cup as Burchadingan top scorer, and arguably the tournament's top scorer, though this is disputed due to the lack of official scoring charts. Born in Sacele, Dimitrie Cuclin's outstanding talent was discovered quickly and after playing for Farul Constanza and Dinamo Bucaresti for a short period of time (2 years), he was transferred to Star Bucharest at the age of 16, being placed on the first team without hesitation. Playing for one of the Burchadingan football giants, he won the league and cup double in his first year, along with Rookie of the Year and Top Scorer honours. Cuclin is a very skillful and creative player and very often does unpredictable things with the ball. The majority of Burchadingan pundits often make comparisons between Cuclin and Markus Klogh, the latter considered the greatest Burchadingan footballer of all time.
ST: Rudolf Rosemeyer - 19 - One of the most complete strikers in Burchadingan football ever, Rudolf Rosemeyer combines his speed, composure, passing and power to become an extremely lethal element of Markus Klogh's starting 11. He played in Barmbeck Uhlenhorst and FC Saarbrücken before he joined Dynamo Dresden at the age of 17. Rosemeyer is a “two-footed” player. He provides perfect crosses with his left, but prefers to shoot with his right. Despite perfecting his ability in almost every aspect, one thing remains sorely lacking, that being his accuracy. His shooting power is intimidating to any goalkeeper, but very rarely has he been able to convert that into goals. Just as Dimitrie Cuclin has been paraded as the new Markus Klogh, Rosemeyer has been paraded as the new Wilhelm Sigmundson, and as with Klogh and Sigmundson, both Rosemeyer and Cuclin share a close personal friendship. Klogh's decision to include Rudolf Rosemeyer on the team, let alone the starting lineup, has been heavily contested by not only the Burchadingan FA, but the general public. Rosemeyer's 50 minute stint in the opening encounter of the AOCAF Cup before getting injured left a barrage of questions being left to answer. Should he play rugby instead? Should he be on the first team? Why wasn't Jurgen Vietoris first choice? Only Markus Klogh knows why.
ST: Heinz Brendel - 22 - Another controversial decision was to re-include Heinz Brendel in the squad. He didn't start a single game in the AOCAF Cup, and he hasn't been signed by any professional football club thus far, meaning the Burchadingan public still have no idea what he has in store. Very little is known about this member of the national team. Brendel has never attended any sort of football school or academy, and it seems only Markus Klogh knows why he deserves a spot in the national team.
ST: Jurgen Vietoris - 22 - Vietoris has got himself in one heck of a position by publicly saying he's a better footballer than Rudolf Rosemeyer and that he should be on the first team instead of 'Rudy'. On one hand, he has the support of the Burchadingan FA, but on the other, Markus Klogh has gone on the record saying Vietoris has ruined any chance of becoming a regular first-choice player. The young striker played most of the AOCAF Cup matches, replacing Rosemeyer following the latter's injury against Legalese. Despite a stunning first game, Vietoris was relatively disappointing during the rest of the campaign. Despite this, he still remains popular in the higher echelon of Burchadingan football, as well as the Burchadingan public. Vietoris is famous (or infamous) for two things; his inability to not score in the Youth Super League, and his constant alcohol and drug problems. Vietoris attended the Mainz Academy when he was 13, and quickly established himself as a fantastic striker. Vietoris' combination of power and accuracy is feared (and often unstoppable) in the Youth Leagues, although he has not started a First Team game before. For 4 years, beginning when he was 16, Vietoris helped turn Mainz into one of the giants of Youth Football in Burchadinger, topping the scoring sheets year after year. It all came crashing down, however, when he failed a drugs test aged 20, being released by Mainz and being banned from all Burchadingan FA competitions for 6 months. After his ban ended, he signed for Hoffenheim, and quickly established himself as their sharp-shooter. Occasionally lauded as being better than Dimitrie Cuclin, Vietoris' major and perhaps only flaw is his continuing battle against both alcohol and cigarettes, something Markus Klogh has urged him to win if he wants a spot on the first team.

Roster

Wladyslaw Bashirskaya (Head Coach ~ #00 ~ Pazhujebi)
Despite somewhat lackluster round of sixteen exits at the Cup of Harmony and the Copa Rushmori, spirits are high heading into the Citiz' fifth World Cup qualification campaign. That's because Bashirskaya has retooled a squad that has always been known for being aged. But now there are only five players who are above thirty years of age, and the team's average age is 27. Three new starters highlight the team; Bashirskaya's biggest gamble is on Garroway, who has never been named to the national squad before. Bashirskaya, the former Yastrabi (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu) manager also made a surprising decision in the net, selecting Storm over Palmer Newman as Diamond's backup. Storm is one of the youngest players ever selected to the national team, and will need to step up greatly regardless of his youth.

Gerard Diamond (Goalkeeper ~ #01 ~ 25 years old ~ Merrilin FC)
Diamond became the full-time starter after Yardleigh-Heath Lander retired from international play after a disappointing defeat to Akbarabad last World Cup. He played solidly in the Cup of Harmony, and had a strong season leading a youthful Merrilin team to fifth in the King's League. He fell just short of being named Goalie of the Year for the second time. The best part? He's only 25, making him the youngest goalie since Jamieson Ladey and a solid choice in goal for several Cups to come.

Joshua Scoville (Left Defender ~ #05 ~ 28 years old ~ High Groth Athletic)
He's no longer the young, underrated upstart he once was, but Scoville's game has matured and he's now a fixture in the starting lineup. He's found a home at High Groth, where he has flourished as the leader on and off the pitch. The greatest risk factor is injury, having missed a few games midway through the season due to a sprained ankle. High Groth trainers say he's good to go, though, and World Cup qualifying is falling nicely between league seasons, so expect Scoville to be on form.

Raymond Montgomery (Center Defender ~ #04 ~ 25 years old ~ Sherwood FC)
Mentoring from Sherwood elders Petter Marveau-Kahn and Wainwright played a huge role in having his best season ever. He was named Defensive Player of the Year - quite the accomplishment for someone who's only 25. That was more than enough to win over Bashirskaya, who made the bold decision to replace Barclay with Montgomery in the lineup.

Leizarraga Garroway (Right Defender ~ #06 ~ 27 years old ~ North Woodlands)
Garroway is a real character. A man of Astograthian roots, he developed a sort of trickster image while at High Groth before being sold to North Woodlands to free up a spot for Scoville. He's been able to get down to business, though, stealing the spotlight from teammate Irving Jefferson, who had been selected to the Cup of Harmony roster.

Parker Pollock (Left Midfielder ~ #17 ~ 24 years old ~ Chastings Heights)
Pollock first hit the national spotlight two years ago, when he scored the fifth-most goals in the King's League. At just 22, he became a starter under Bashirskaya, but struggled to play beside domineering Remy Yates. Now he has the left side of the field all to himself; add maturity and experience to the mix, and he could be a real force for the team. The one overarching question for him, though, has been his fundamentals - which could be exploited by more technically sound opponents.

Taylor Renton (Center Midfielder ~ #08 ~ 31 years old ~ Eldorado/Cafundéu) *VICE-CAPTAIN*
Renton is famous for becoming the first Citiz to play for a Cafundelense team. In his first season at Eldorado, he was named the third-best midfielder in the country; his performance has been steady since moving from Hospice, securing his place as a starter. He is, without a doubt, the moral leader of the Citiz team, as he has for every single World Cup. Rumors abound that Bashirskaya will consider moving him to the bench even as early as the next Copa Rushmori, which means Renton has to prove he's not quite past his prime.

Oswald Hastings (Center Midfielder ~ #19 ~ 32 years old ~ TFC Lannymore)
It's not every day a man is named Player of the Year three consecutive seasons, but that's just one of the main highlights of Hastings' glorious career. Despite scoring sixteen goals this season, he was not very impressive in doing so. It's fair to say that the key reason Bashirskaya selected him as a starter was pressure from the Citiz Football Association. However, he is still a prominent goal-scoring threat.

Vine Hewitt (Right Midfielder ~ #03 ~ 25 years old ~ East Kent Professional)
Among tabloids, Hewitt's claim to fame is a two-year romance with actress Rosy Barnett. Sports fans - which make up the majority of Citiz - have been following the left-footed wonder since he was in high school. This past season was the breakout year he had sought since he turned professional, scoring nearly as many goals as Krytenian Paul Carlisle for East Kent. He is taking advantage of the loss of Roxbury Welton, a fan favorite whose age made it unfeasible for him to be selected.

Powell Kingston (Left Forward ~ #23 ~ 29 years old ~ Tannenberg FC/Valladares)
Three seasons in Mytannion, three different teams - and three goal tallies in the top five of the now-defunct Takillega. It's been a quirky career for Kingston, but then he's a somewhat quirky guy - at least in the eyes of a mainly white society (Kingston is black). His leadership at Atletik Thessia prompted Tannenberg to sign him post-Takillega combustion. He's still shy of the big three-oh, but never had the best foot speed; opponents should be wary of his shot-making ability.

Jackson Cedric (Center Forward ~ #18 ~ 27 years old ~ Fox Zero)
Cedric became a consistent starter for the first time in the Cup of Harmony, but overshadowed by Ackleigh and Kingston, he did not blossom as critics hoped. He really earned his place with a fantastic season in Civil Citizenry, firing up a Fox Zero team that won the league for the first time ever. Now at the center of his prime, Cedric is the biggest threat to score on the entire team, and is quick to boot.

Ingram Ackleigh (Right Forward ~ #10 ~ 29 years old ~ CR Submiria/Cafundéu) *CAPTAIN*
If there's any one recognizable Citiz, it's Ackleigh. Now entering his fifth World Cup as captain, he is really hoping to lead the country to a World Cup finals before he steps aside for younger talent. He is coming off a fair season at Submiria after an incredible stint in Erathore, captaining Vincanto to two straight domestic doubles, a Golden Boot, a Palla dell'oro, and two Golden Visas. Only a Cup finals appearance could cap off an amazing career.

World Cup Roster announced for #115 Michael VII

So, we've gone up a few places in the KPB rankings, now up to #115, and in the Top 120, the qualifying for WC 58 is now about to begin with a new sense of optimism in the nation. Hopefully now we will finally get close to qualifying for the big stage, so we'll just wait and see, either way we've had the team roster announced, and no changes have been made since last year, hopefully experience will lead to glory!

WC 58 Squadlist

Following legal wranglings which saw the Melbergian side suspended from what would have been their NS International soccer debut in the Baptism of Fire, they are here, ready and raring to go in their first World Cup qualification campaign. The small football-loving nation of Melbergia isn't expected to make any impact on the tournament at all, but the fans are loving every moment of their heroes' involvement in this prestigious competition.

- National Coach Lars O'Neill is a veteran manager in the domestic game. Going into this competition he described it as 'a challenge unlike any [he has] seen previously in his career'.
- 21-year old striker Simon Carr will be looking to further extend his legendary status in his country's domestic leagues by scoring goals for his country on the international scene. He described Melbergia's eventual entry into the tournament as 'a massive, massive, massive opportunity and a privilege'.

Swartaz roster World Cup 58

Goalkeepers

1. Karl JAMESSON (Starter) (Vaastrada FC) Age: 23

Karl has quickly broken into the Vaastrada first team despite his tender age with some great displays of brilliant acrobatical goalkeeping. Certainly one to watch if you want exitement, but his ability to stick on his line when needed to has been called into question. Due to Handorlink retiring at the end of the most recent Copa Rushmori, Karl has been eased into the first team for this World Cup cycle.

23. Niko Drovasouski (Res) (Der Sorrn) Age: 27

Niko made a name for himself as a quality shot stopper last season in the B Lig playing for champions Der Sorrn. Now in the A Lig and still showing the same ability, Gabriel has built the sufficient confidence needed to include him in the Swartaz team for this World Cup cycle.

99. Kimi Kalssön (Sub) (IFK Göteborg) Age: 22

IFK Göteborg's starting goalkeeper for the last few years, the 23 year old six and a half footer has recieved universal plaudits from pundits for him calm and composed performances first in the A Lig, and in the most recent Di Bradini cup. A possible race for the number 1 shirt next world cup with Jamesson is on the cards.

Defence

2. Henrik OTTO (Starter) (Eldorado) (Cafundeu) Age: 36

Henrik is the perfect right back in Swartaz's attacking system. He gets up and down the right wing all day effortlessly, with breathtaking speed and stamina, and a handy knack of scoring goals from outside the area just at the right time. Playing in Cafundeu has also helped is all round game, especially defensively, and he is now able to hold his own down the wing against the worlds best.

5. Fredrik GAISBAN (Starter) (AFC Tranzversa) Age: 28

Fredrik burst onto the international scene a few years ago in place of struggling now retired Kristan Alvar and has never looked back. Capable of some massive tackles, creator of many a counter attack with his long balls, and his ability on the ball, he has been described as the playmaker stuck in defence, but defence is his calling.

4. Hugo LUKAS (Starter) (Rigdemont Town) (Queer Poco el Mono Ara) Age: 34

Hugo's style of play is similar to Fredrik's, but he has two distinct advantages. One, he is faster, capable of staying with the fastest of strikers. And two, his height (6"6) enables him to clear balls that Gaisban simply cannot get to. Despite starting to get on slightly these days, he has stayed clear of injury and still has the speed he possessed ten years ago, while having massively grown in experience.

29. Olof GÅSSENT (Starter) (Mauntenborg FC) Age: 21

Olof was a bit of an unknown quantity in the centre of the defence. All that changed when his left footed-ness became needed at left back for Groubeschwellei, and he showed that he had the potential to be one of the A Lig's best full backs. Throwing the 21 year old into the first team at this stage is a gamble, but buoyed by his big money move to mega rich Mauntenböurg, he has the ability to be brilliant in games to come.

27. Janek PIDULSKI (Sub) (IFK Goteborg) Age: 27

Janek's versitility has allowed him to become more of a fixture in the Swartaz squad in recent years. He doesn't particually excel in any area, but he is the perfect player to bring in anywhere in the defence, or even midfield, if injuries hit.

12. Henrik LITREMMEN (res) (Jan Mayen Islanders) Age: 23

Henrik, son of inspirational ex-captain Jans, has been thrown straight from the U-21 team into this world cup cycle. Swartaz's stand out player in the 17th Di Brandini cup, he has a lot of expectation on is shoulders coming up in the next few years, but he should be able to confidently handle it with his undoubted ability.

30. Vaarger JASMEIKAEIL (res) (AFC Tranzversa) Age: 32

Not really much to say about Vaarger, an average at best full back for international standards, but he does his job well at AFC and is ready to be called upon when needed.

Midfield

11. Karl JASIN (Starter) (A.F.F) (Cafundeu) Age: 28

Karl was the definitive 'wonderkid' of World Cup 52 with abundant energy and creativity down the right side and has carried on his amazing play throughout his career thus far. The only non-Swartazian born on the team, he is still as passionate about the team as any. A regular at Cafundeu club A.F.F, he has shown his promise in the domestic scene too.

6. Johan HESSE (Starter) (AFC Tranzversa) CAPTAIN Age: 34

The monster of the centre midfield is Johan Hesse, capable of dispossesing even the cockiest and cleverist playmakers. Couple that with his top class passing ability and vision, you have the perfect holding midfileder. He also writes a very successful blog about his on and off field endevours.

8. Marko KRIVAC (Starter) (Jan Mayen Islanders) (Polar Islandstates) Age: 30

his brilliant energetic and skillful playmaking in the attacking midfielder role make Marko a joy to watch, and he is adored by players and fans alike. He's also capable of scoring from long range and in his element with the ball at his feet just outside the opposision box, he is arguably the reason Swartaz won the Cup of Harmony a few years back.

17. Josef GUNNARSSON (Sub) (Olympic Thessia) (Mytannion) Age: 23

Josef has taken the Mytannion domestic scene by storm this season with his brilliant and eccentric attacking play and love of fan pleasing. He'll be a real hidden weapon in the team having snatched a well deservered starting place, and will be looking to make a great impact in his first Copa Rushmori.

16. Adolph KANNESBOURG (Sub) (Juvillian Martinax) (Erathore) Age: 27

Kannesbourg has thrived since making the move to Erathore, really showing a great deal of his undoubted potential. However, if he is to continue his career problem free, he must make sure he is not inticed into anything to 'exotic' by team-mates or friends ever again, lest it blow up in his face as badly as it did last time again.

27. Jonas Rundstrom (Res) ((Bravia Motors) Age: 20

Jonas has earned his berth in the Swartaz squad for World Cup 58 with some eye catching performances at Bravia Motors after breaking into the team there. He won't be thrown straight in at the deep end, but is a useful player to fall back on in hard times.

37. Mikael JOHANNES (Sub) (?) (FSSO) Age: 24

Mikael is another creative master, who excels with the ball at his feet. After an unexpected move to FSSO, has improved greatly and now finds himself on the bench.

25. Yngve SXER (Res) (Volerander FC) Age: 35

A career wrecked by injury is the story here, but is capable of mesmerising displays of football on his day.

Strikers
20. Wilhelm Berghoff (Starter) (East Franz Athletic) (Polar Islandstates) Age: 27

Wilhelm was promoted to the squad after Kimi Linissön's untimely death halfway through WC 55 qualifying. He had a brilliant season last year up front at AFC Tranzversa with Janni Milverki, and he was rewarded with a move to big Polar Islandstates club East Franz Athletic. His dazzling displays in the most recent Copa Rushmori were enough to get him promoted to the first team for this World Cup, in Klum's expense.

9. Olec DASRA (Starter) (FKM) (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)[/i] Age: 25

Olec must be one of the greatest but least consistent strikers in world football. With the whole of Swartaz on his shoulders, he carries the Dasra name well on the pitch, with all the confidence and ability of his late father. When on form, he just cannot be stopped. He can score from just about anywhere, and in a variety of different fashions. Off form however, he is hotheaded, agitated and generally needs to have a bit of a cool off to get him back to his world beating talent.

10. Benidikt KLUM (Sub (Volerander FC) Age: 32

Benidikt is Mr. Reliable up front, with speed, strength and goalscoring ability all combining to make the perfect target man. Not as extravagant or exiting as Dasra, he is undoubtedly more consistent and when on form is unstoppable, for club and country, the striker spearheading the exiting Volerander FC front line .

39. Jan Sundstrom (Res) (Jasmuur Eagles) Age: 23

Jasmuur Eagles own prodigy turned good, he is something of a cult hero among the passionate droves of supporters at Jasmuur Eagles. He is capable of spectacular displays, and everybody associated with the player will be hoping he can turn that quality on when he is called upon to do so.

‘The Bear-Belles’

Please note that this is, once again, a unified team that represents all of ‘Bears Armed’ rather than just the country’s ‘Mainland’ section.
Yes, it still is an all-female team. As I’ve explained before, this is because the main ball-game that's traditionally been played in Bears Armed is actually a form of Rugby, but [for several reasons] the professional league for that sport is all-male and so some of the female players decided that switching to Soccer — and trying to establish a professional league for that sport for themselves instead — might be a viable alternative: They were right, because that professional league was founded shortly after WC44 and so has now been in operation for over fifty years.

According to the timeline for this nation, the qualifiers for WC57 are starting in 2065AD. The figures given here for people’s ages & lengths of experience should therefore be increased by 1 year for the second half of the qualifiers and then by another year for the ‘World Cup itself or (if we don’t manage to qualify for that…) the ‘Cup of Harmony’.

Staff

Manager & Chief Coach: Urra ‘Honey’ SunBlesséd _ A female Ursine from the Sun Clan, she has 60 years of experience in football and played fro the Bear-Belles from BoF#31 right through into WC#57. Her age now is 77 but, although not amongst the people from the team who were “rejuvenated” in 2042, she still seems quite ‘young’ both physically and mentally. She is right-pawed, with ‘honey-brown’ fur, and has very good eyesight even by human (rather than Ursine) standards. She is a very accurate kicker, and was therefore one of the usual first choices for taking free kicks & penalties. Her nickname comes from her fur-colour, and her very sweet nature: Originally it was also because (as we must admit…) she was rather “thick”, but then she ‘grew-up’ mentally during WWC12 & the qualifiers for WC50 so that now she has a verrry good mind indeed… She acted as manager for the [“unified”] U21 teams that Bears Armed entered in DBC13 (=> runners-up) and DBC14 (=> quarter-finals), but this is her first competition in charge of the adult team.

Deputy Manager (Admin): Urradarra o SwanWater (female Ursine, from Clan GreenWoods; formerly Deputy Manager of the Heroes’ Park Harlequins, and more recently a staff member at BAMAS [as it then was], originally appointed to this job for ‘Oxen Cup 14’; age = 56, fur = medium-brown & quite long [but fashionably so…], left-pawed).

Doctor: Mitzi von und zu Steiffen (female Ursine, from Clan Kettar-Surra; age = officially 64 but was ‘rejuvenated’ and therefore seems a bit younger, left-pawed, fur = light brown.)

Physio: Gerrthra o Barrdenn (female Ursine, from Clan GreenWoods; age = officially 63 was ‘rejuvenated’ and therefore seems a bit younger, left-pawed, fur = dark brown.)

Routemaster: Lieutenant-Colonel Harron o Harrha (male Ursine, from Clan BerryGlades and the Confederal Army’s General Staff Corps; age = officially 61* but looks quite a bit younger than that , left-pawed, fur = dark-medium brown & cut quite short; the job involves handling all of the squad’s travelling arrangements.)

Chaplain, ‘One Plus Seven’: Urrsulha Nightfall (female Ursine from the Silver-of-Night; age = mid-30’s-ish, left-pawed, fur = silvery; assigned to this job, by the Great Medicine Society, following the retirement of Urrthra Moonshadow after WC#56.)

Chaplain, Ursion: Derrik Ommin (male Ursine, from Clan Artorran; age = 31; right-pawed, fur = light brown & fairly short, he is a bit closer to ‘human’ in shape than is the average Ursine; seconded to this post from the staff of the ArchPriest of New Sarrum, who is the Earthly head of the Ursion Church; he is a keen student of Football, both nationally & internationally, and can bore for ~~England~~ Bears Armed on the details of teams’ records & players’ careers (and about the statistics involved, too: Did I mention yet that he originally trained as a statistician? ^_^ ) — if you give him even half a chance…)

Security Chief: Captain Arran Warrd (male Ursine, from Clan Herrchaum; age = 33, left-pawed, fur = dark grey; easily overlooked, most of the time; seconded from [an unspecified unit within] the Confederal Army to this job following the retirement of Urrthra Moonshadow.)

Caterers: Jorrdon Blue.

“Mascot”: ‘The Wise Grorrfinn’ (male ‘TrueBear’; age = undisclosed [but considering some of his appearances in old stories apparently somewhere over 1’500, at least...], ambidextrous, fur = medium-brown); during WC54 it was revealed that he is the maternal grandfather of Urra ‘Honey’ SunBlesséd.

Godmod Other Events: Y, I suppose, at least as long as you do so in an AMUSING way... but please remember that Ursines are fully sapient beings, as much as Humans are, not instinct-driven animals. Oh, and of course female Ursines are not sexually interested in Humans (of either sex), and it's very unlikely that female Harr'ayanau would be either. Please don't have them run amok or outright revert to animality, without checking by TG first, don't make assumptions about their views on politics or religion, and don't do anything that would make more than one of them incapable of playing in their next game...

Kit: This incarnation of the team will mainly wear the usual set of designs (from ‘ediraf’) that the Belles have favoured in the past, with the ‘Association’ badges correctly staying ‘BAAS’ rather than [the now obsolete] ‘BAMAS’. See "here" for details.
However when participating in the ‘Pink Cup’ they will switch to the NorthBears’ former violet strip, which was produced by Tenderville, instead.
Bears Armed has traditionally used base-8 arithmetic, for several reasons, and this has affected the set of numbers used for this team’s players: Also, the number “22” has deliberately been left unassigned out of respect for its first [& only] wearer who died a heroine’s death during the year immediately following WC444…

Home grounds

1/. Wimbley Stadium: Located a few miles to the north-north-west of Council Groves (our capital city), to which it is connected by rail as well as by road, this stadium was built from scratch — on part of a former Confederal Army base’s site — shortly before the qualifiers for WC52 began as a replacement for the Bear-Belles former “home” at ‘Plumtrees Park’ which has now been demolished. Its current capacity is approximately 60'000 for Ursines: Fitting about 40’000 humans into the visiting fans' half should be possible, and so that's as many as we'll let into the country. Accommodation for visiting teams & their staffs will be provided in a new hotel, less than a mile away, which has staff who are accustomed to dealing with Humans as well as with Ursines. The various other hotels in that complex and those at Council Groves can now provide about 12’000 rooms at a time, at varying prices, although of course some of those may already have been booked by people who have nothing to do with the Cup. Accommodation (at a fairly basic level) for up to 15’000 supporters will be available, at reasonable prices, in students' residences for the National University’s campus in that city: if any more than all of those facilities put together can house want to attend a match then they’ll have to borrow space in the area’s remaining Army camp instead...
There are still no direct inter-regional flights into Council Groves, so that visitors will have to travel by way of one of our neighbours and then continue onwards by one of the limited number of "local" air-flights or by rail. (People planning to arrive by rail will still have to travel via the nation of Mikitivity, but extra services will be organised on that route...)
This site will be used for some of the Belles’ home games (list to be added), and also for some of their friendlies & matches in other Cups during this period as specified separately.

2./ ‘NorthLands National Stadium’: Located at NorthPort, the most cosmopolitan city in The Ursine Northlands, this facility was originally built for use by the 'Northbears' WC49’s qualifiers. Unfortunately the place has since seen rather less use than was originally hoped, but it is still in good condition and will hold about 43’000 Ursines or over 60’000 humans (or, of course, proportionate numbers of a mixture of those two species) because it was deliberately built to be rather larger than 'Plumtrees Park' which was then the Mainland's 'national' stadium…
This site will be used for some of the Belles’ home games (list to be added), and also for some of their friendlies & matches in other Cups during this period as specified separately.
Foreigners coming to this stadium may either travel to the ‘Mainland’ and then continue hence via a set of ancient [& probably magical] ‘Gates’ that link the country’s two sections — completing their journey by either rail or riverboat after that — or take ship directly to NorthPort.

3./ New Grafford: Located at WestPort, just inside the country’s border with Mikitiuvity, this is the home ground of 'WestPort Wonders' who have been one of the National League’s leading teams for most of its existence. It is widely acknowledged as one of the National League’s best stadiums, and has a capacity comparable to Wimbley. This site will probably be used for a few of the Belles’ home games, or at least for some of their friendlies (list to be added).

NOTES

Ursines may tend to be a bit less agile & slower to accelerate than humans on average, but this team's members were carefully selected so the gap between them & their opponents in this respect should be narrower than some people might expect. They do tend to have [slightly] poorer eyesight than humans, on the whole (although the members of both Clan Gunnar and the Sun Clan are generally an exception to this rule, and the eyesight of the latter group is actually often at [slightly] better-than-human levels instead), so long-distance passes & shots at goal will tend to be rarer behaviour for them than they are for human teams... but their typical size & strength mean that when they're running with the ball it will probably take a very brave human — as well as a very skilled one — to tackle them successfully (or, at least, one who has reasonable experience of playing against Ursines…), which should balance that factor pretty well. They don’t jump very well, but then they’re generally rather taller than most Human players to start with so they shouldn’t need to jump as often in order to intercept [relatively] high shots...
Ursines are physically robust, of course, which means that they're much less likely than humans are to suffer injuries in falls or collisions. The females of this species are more even-tempered than the males, and the team's members will try to stay on their best behaviour not only in order to do well in this contest but also to impress upon the watching humans that Ursines aren't just "dumb beasts". They will not 'dive', or feign injury in other ways, because suggesting that they could be harmed so easily goes strongly against the grain. ‘Northlanders’ are maybe not quite as "civilised" as the 'Mainlanders'… or, at any rate, that’s the traditional stereotype..
Cold weather should pose no problem to them, even if there's snow or ice on the pitch, but tropical heat might prove awkward...

Unless our hosts at the match in question object, this team's members (including the designated substitutes for the match in question) will perform a [fairly short] ritual that's called the 'harrdiharr'[/url] on the pitch just before play begins... This is a traditional war-dance, meant to over-awe opponents, that has come to be a customary prelude for team games as well (similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' 'haka'...). : )
As has now been seen during various tournaments, some of our fans like to take drums — and possibly also 'Urrs-horns' [which are similar to Alpenhorns, cow-horns, or other "musical instruments", too — along to the matches…

Armed Bears
(alias ‘The Bear-Belles’...)

(Yes, it's probable that I will change their nickname to reduce confusion with the team from Bears Armed, but I'm waiting for a good alternative to suggest itself... or to be suggested...)

For the information of those amongst you who are fairly new to NS Sports: Yes, this is is a team — and nation — consisting primarily of anthropomorphic Bears.
For the information of those amongst you who have already been around NS Sports for a while: Yes, this nation does have the same player as Bears Armed… but IC, instead of this nation being a ‘puppet’ of that other country, they are actually ‘alternative reality’ counterparts of each other and didn’t even know of each other’s existence before this tournament.
The current year in Armed Bears converts into the Gregorian calendar as 2013AD, even though for footballers from Bears Armed (whose own international debut, BoF31, was in 2008AD…), it is now 2065AD instead!

This is another all-female team, for the same reason that Bears Armed’s team falls into that category: The main ball-game that's traditionally been played in their homeland so far is actually a form of Rugby, but [for several reasons] the professional league for that sport is all-male and so a few years ago (in 2006AD, actually) some of the female players decided that switching to Soccer instead -- and trying to establish a professional league for that -- might be a viable alternative.

This is the same set of players that the country sent to B0F#45, except that they now have approximately a year’s more age & experience each.
Almost all of the players are actual Ursines (i.e. anthropomorpic, bipedal Bears), but there are also two [female] members from the Harr'aynau people -- who are physically human (more-or-less, although inclined towards heavy builds & hairyness) but spiritually & culturally Ursine instead -- as well one player from yet another non-Ursine minority.

Notes
Ursines may tend to be a bit less agile & slower to accelerate than humans on average, but this team's members were carefully selected so the gap between them & their opponents in this respect should be narrower than some people might expect. They do tend to have slightly poorer eyesight than humans, on the whole, so that long-distance passes & shots at goal will be rarer behaviour for them than they are for human teams... but their size & strength mean that when they're running with the ball it will probably take a very brave human -- as well as a very skilled one -- to tackle them successfully, which should balance that factor pretty well.
They're physically robust, of course, which means that they're less likely than humans to suffer injuries in falls or collisions but also that the form of Rugby in which most of them played before switching to Soccer was even more physical than the humans' versions of that game... and unfortunately some of them might forget the change of rules, in the excitement of the match, and use those tactics here...
Forgetting that they're playing Soccer now, rather than 'Ursine-Rules' Rugby, will actually be the most likely reason for any rule-breaking that they might commit, but they're generally bright enough not to make such a mistake more than once per match per player (and after one of them has been penalised for doing so in any particular way it's fairly unlikely that any others would repeat the exact same mistake...). The females of this species are mote even-tempered than the males, and the team's members will try to stay on their best behaviour not only in order to do well in this contest (which they probably need to do in order for their planned Soccer league to become a reality) but also to impress upon the watching humans that Ursines aren't just “dumb beast”. They will not 'dive', or feign injury in other ways, because suggesting that they could be harmed so easily goes strongly against the grain.

If the organisers permit then the team's members, including subsititutes, will do a [short] traditional war-dance (similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' 'haka'...), on the pitch, just before each match begins: This is called the 'Harrdiharr'... ;-)

While the nation took a long break between WCs 8 and 24 (inclusive), the Holy Empire is proud to be the last currently active nation to have participated in WC1.

This World Cup, you get to choose the Holy Empire squad!

OOC - In the past, I've previously 'fielded' squads that have been defined by opponents - most famously when opponents faced their 'worst nightmare'. But this time - using advanced Dreamed Realm technology - every Holy Empire opponent gets to choose the nature of the Imperial squad. Each of the opposing FAs will have received a letter stating that they can choose the Imperial squad 24 hours ahead of the match.

You can make the Holy Empire team anything you want it to be should you RP first. If you'd really like to pick the team, but think I might RP first, drop me a TG prior to match day scorination to tell me what you'd like your opponents to be.

There are no limits to what sort of team you can pick - ordinary footballers, sentient snowmen, giant footballing fleas, an entire team of stay-puft marshmallow men... the decision is yours.

Though you might not want to pick something so ridiculous that you'd be unable to explain why you lost to them. So feel free to be wildly creative - but try and do so within reason. That said, I'm giving you free choice, so I'll work with whatever you come up with.

I'll likely RP that it's testament to the coaching skills of the coaching staff that they manage to keep winning (and given the KPB points involved, it's realistically likely that they will win a lot). And if the Empire loses? Well, I have a built in excuse, don't I?

About Camian Football

Football is the third biggest sport to ice hockey (1) and lacrosse (2). Because of the popularity of hockey and lacrosse in Camwood some tactics are derived from plays in those sports. Tactics such as Forechecking and cutting towards the net are common in the most in youth football, but more rare as the level play increases. The "fourth line is a common sight in professional football in Camwood. In Camwood there is a distinct difference between forwards and strikers. Camian strikers tend to be positioned closer to the attacking goal, while Forwards fall back more and form an "Attacking Midfield" line. Hence, the Midfielders would be in relation to Defensive Midfielders. Despite the previous analogy, the midfielders still play at a normal line.

The C-League is Camwood's three tier/four group domestic league. The C-League has a small footprint on UICA play, but powerhouse teams like Inter Compolis and Vanler Dynamo are quicking rising through UICA ranks.

Tactics and Management

Manager: Justin Kiplin - Sprting White Rock - Age 45
Kiplin, despite a sixth place, narrowly avoiding relegation finish was presented the C-League Manger of the Season Award. Most voters claim that, "He got his team out of a hole when his team wouldn't perform". Kiplin is widely acknowledged as Camwood's smartest manager, but critics warn that his determination is less than his intellect.
Doctor: Dr. Robert Goodrich - Inter Compolis - Age 37

An Overview of Tactics: Kiplin has his team's defensiveness and offensiveness pretty well balanced. He recognizes that his supply of players is not the best in the world, (hence the 150th international rank) but the skill his players does have is as equal defensively as it is offensively.

Kiplin likes to use his outsdide midfielders to dump the ball into the corner, and have an outside forward chase the ball and center it. As the outside defender centers the ball most of the midfielders and forwards cut towards the net, like in basketball or lacrosse.

Kiplin applies an "intense zone" on defense. His practice is that players are conservative until a player with a ball enters a player's zone, and once that happens the defending player is supposed to "get in the attacker's face" and create a steal. Kiplin also likes to "clear the ball upfield" as a pose to dribbling or passing it for the sheer purpose of containing control. "By clearing the ball, we don't risk a turn over and if we're lucky our forwards can fight and get the ball."

Kevin Torress is the face of Camian football. He lead his team, the Vanler Dynamo, to a C-League championship, and one win in UICA competition. Torress has great overall skill specifically in passing. He's one of the only players on the national team that doesn't have a large flaw. Torress has a family, including a one year old boy. He's known through Camwood to "be twice as nice and morally good, then his football skill".

LM #10 DONALD MATHERLY - Port Kostas Strikers - Age 32 Goals: 1, Caps: 31
Matherly is a veteran midfielder for the Strikers. He is a defensively minded player, who makes percision slide tackles. Morally he is a quite guy who maintains a luxury car collection. He's never been married, but is usually able to keep a girlfriend for six months before wrecking his won relationship.

LCM #21 JEFF CECIL - Inter Compolis - Age 24 Goals 2, Caps, 34
Jeff Cecil is a big time midfielder for a big time club. He is great when dribbling and passing. However, he is not afraaid to charge the net and score. Cecil is a devote Catholic and can be seen before games praying. He spends alot of his off season doing mission trips to third world countries, teaching the kids there to play football.

RM #5 KEITH CREIGHTON - Petmonton FC - Age 25 Goals 1, Caps: 32
There is skepticism regarding Justin Kiplin's choice to keep starting Creighton on the National team. He still maintain a young age, but made some stupid decisions during the previous Copa Rushmori. Many people were angry when Kiplin announced that Keith Creighton was remaining a starter; so angry CAFA president, Thomas Kemlon, ordered a meeting with him. No roster changes took place following that meeting.

LD #13 HENRY YOUNG - FC Nattas - Age 21 Goals 0, Caps: 7
Young is the only starting player that comes from a second tier team. In fact, FC Nattas didn't promote this past
C-League season. However, Young lead his team to a Tulip Cup, national tournment, championship. However, FC Nattas was early to leave the Cygnus Cup. Young left college one year early to sign with FC Nattas.

CD #24 ALFRED LI - Inter Compolis - Age 33 Goals: 0, Caps: 31
Li is a premier defender for Inter Compolis' powerhouse tean. He has a big boot for clearing balls upfield. He also is keen on speed, and is quick to block shots and make slide tackles. Li is getting old, and this is likely to be his last World Cup.

RD #4 VICTOR GILES - Port Kostas Strikers - Age 25 Goals: 1, Caps: 35
Giles has been on the team for a long time. He's served two World Cups and a Copa Rushmori; he's a proven warrior. He'll get in the crowds, put his should down and get the ball: the dirty way. He's not a small dude that's for sure; He's six foot, four inches and over 210 pounds. Giles spends alot of time "trying" to manage high school football teams during the off-season. What's ironic is, alot of them either quit, or end up on the worst team in the nation.

Because of the Dillvill Uprising and Civil War, and the departure of about twenty nations from the EL commonwealth in a political event now known as the Great Exodus, the mainland EL government ordered borders to be closed both in and out of the portal. This meant that those on Gateway Island, where the main arrival airport for entry to Eastfield Lodge is, were stranded. With a lot of the professional and eligible football players stuck on this side of the border, the foreign office and the ELFA told the immigration office to organize a team from as many overseas players and civilians as possible. The resultant situation is below. Also, due to a complicated spacetime event, there has been no change in ages from the CoH 49 through to the WC.

Manager: Shabeen Ahmad III: 38, former EL striker and was EL attack coach , retired from football completely, was in The Babbage Islands when borders closed. Scored 208 goals for country.

Explanation of Positions:
GK, CB and SB are all as normal, but the first interesting part are the two Defending Midfielders. Their job is vast and diverse, effectively being the defensive playmakers of the team. Primarily, their job is to support the three defenders when necessary, dropping back into central defence when the centre is outnumbered or making early interceptions on the flanks to aid the defence. They will also defend all over in midfield if numbers require so. In terms of attacking, the defending midfielders are the crucial link between defence and attack, and it will often be them who begin the counter-attacks, passing the ball to any of the forward five, mainly the "wingers" or the AMF.

Going forward, the next interesting positions are those of the wingers, who instead of playing fully on the flanks, tend to be on the border of centre and flank, enabling them to run at the gaps between the full backs and the centre halves. This leads to setting up the central front three for and through open spaces. When necessary, they will move out to the flanks, where their inside jobs will be taken over by the defending midfielders. The DMFs, followed by the wingers, are the ones who will take most of the long shots if breaking the defence is a harder option.

The centre forwards have relatively normal jobs, although one may drop back at a time to create openings for others. The attacking midfielder's main job is to start off movements from a relatively stalemate position and to drop deep to pick up the ball and hold it up for the rest of the front five. The attacking midfielder will be one who is the key link in attacks, and they will be all over the park.

THE MONASTIC WORLD CUP 58 SQUAD

First of all, everyone except newbies knows that the Archregimancy is a nation of Eastern Orthodox Christian monks from an alternate reality, right?

After an alarming dip in form in WC 57, the Archregimancy squad is being dramatically restructured for this cup, with a new coach and an almost entirely new set of players.

COACH -
Fr. David of the Woods:

A former international goalkeeper for both Errinundera and the Archregimancy, Fr. David is a controversial choice as national team coach. Not because of his knowledge of either football or Ordinary Reality teams, but because before defecting from Errinundera and converting to the Orthodox Church, he was the notoriously dissolute and immoral publicly genderqueer owiavi. While both the Holy Synod, Monastic Football Association and his brothers at the Holy Monastery of Solovetsky all happily accept that his conversion to the ascetic monastic life is wholly genuine (and that Fr. David is wholly male), more conservative elements in the Archregimancy question his suitability as a role model. His appointment to the position may represent a rare outbreak of pragmatism on the part of the Monastic Football Association.

GOAL
Fr. Timothy of the Victorious XI Championship goalkeeper for the Holy Monastery of St. John of New Patmos when they miraculously won the Monastic League for the first time in some 246 seasons of footballing futility, Fr. Timothy has many admirers both in the Dreamed Realm and Ordinary Reality.

DEFENCE
Fr. Anastasius the Troglodyte In Orthodox monastic terms, a troglodyte is not some mythical creature, but rather a hermit who lives in an isolated cave, usually underground. Fr. Anastasius is rather pale-skinned.

His Holiness Manuel the Bishop of the Holy Monastery of Iviron [Capt.] Fr. Manuel is the first bishop to take the field for the Archregimancy in the nation's entire sporting history. The hope is that he is skilled in footballing defence as he is skilled in defending Orthodoxy from the serpentine machinations of Catholicism.

Fr. Peter the Non-Martyr Fr. Peter's defensive determination is rumoured to stem from the sense of guilt he feels in escaping martyrdom for the faith during an unpleasant incident in Northern Bettia about which he refuses to speak further.

Fr. George the Perfumer One of the few holdovers from the WC57 team, Fr. George has, in holiness, kept his body untouched by water for some 25 years now, that he may better worship the Lord without distraction. Whether his name refers to his role as incense keeper at the Holy Monastery of St. Saba's in the Desert, or to his unique personal aroma is a matter of some debate; opposing forwards may wish it was the former.

MIDFIELD
Fr. Irenaeus the Ascetic Another holdover from the WC57 team. Even in an entire nation of monks who often engage in severe ascetic hermit practices, Fr. Irenaeus stands out. He eats a single bowl of beans a day, drinks nothing but rain water, and is known to run tirelessly between the caves in his mountain hermitage. But as thin as he undoubtedly is, there's no doubting that he's supremely fit, and will run many a defender into the ground.

Fr. Maximus the Confessor His searching eye for the laser-like defense-splitting pass is akin to his ability to force even the most wretched of sinners to repent of their wrongdoing; said to have joined the squad at Fr. David's personal request.

Br. Neophytus the Novice In a rare case of a monk who is not a monk-priest being called up to the squad, Br. Neophytus may be new to the monastic life, but his footballing ability is unquestioned. A former professional midfielder for Holy Empire side New Nicea, this genuinely devout player likely would have been called up to the Imperial squad some cups ago if HEFA had ever decided to field human footballers in recent campaigns. The Archregimancy isn't complaining about his availability.

Fr. Euthymius the Great In yet another sign of renewed MFA footballing pragmatism, Fr. Euthymius has joined the squad in recognition of his leading the scoring and assist charts for perennial Monastic League powerhouses Pantocrator MFC this past season. No mean feat for a right winger.

FORWARDS
Fr. Innocent of Ariddia Last of the WC57 holdovers, and the most successful international convert ever to play for the team, WC57 was supposed to be his final ever World Cup appearance, but he's agreed to a fifth consecutive campaign since returning from retirement out of a sense of repentance for the squad's poor performance last time around.

Fr. Laurence the Recluse A quiet and (surprise, surprise) reclusive forward for Hermits United MFC, Fr. Laurence caused a sensation last season by scoring 75% of the HU-MFC's goals. Concerns remain that he may have too modest and diffident a style for international football. Is he perhaps the squad's weak link, or is his selection an inspired gamble by Fr. David?

Tips for footballing visitors to the Archregimancy:

1) Each home match is preceded by the complete Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Rest assured that this should only require visiting teams, fans, and officials to stand for a mere 2 hours before kickoff. Consider yourselves lucky we don't use the Liturgy of St. Basil.

2) We control the nature of reality in the Dreamed Realm. This isn't used to cheat - all normal rules of football are strenuously followed - but it does have two major side effects:
A) Any injuries to either team in Archregimancy home matches are immediately healed.
B) No violent or riotous behaviour by visiting fans will be tolerated. Any such behaviour will find those responsible immediately transported back to ordinary physical reality.

3) Direct travel from ordinary physical reality to the Dreamed Realm is impossible. Some 72 hours before your away qualifier in the Archregimancy, a team of monks shall arrive in your home stadium and construct a portal to the Dreamed Realm. You may then use this to travel to the Archregimancy at your leisure.

4) Visiting support is limited to a maximum of 5,000 fans as this campaign the Archregimancy will be playing in a smaller home stadium.

5) Women are not usually permitted into the Archregimancy. Exceptions will be made for visiting players and properly accredited officials - largely because we have to.

6) Formerly, the Archregimancy made a point of being resentful of being forced to permit atheists, communists, freemasons, assorted heretics and foul excelites into the Archregimancy for home qualifiers. These days the Monastic Football Association tries a little harder to welcome all of the above – though largely in the hope that might just possibly be open to conversion through a slightly more conciliatory approach.

HOME GROUND

The MFA will host matches in the stadium at the home monastery of team captain Bishop Manuel - the Holy Monastery of Iviron.

A Brief History:
After debuting in a series of regional friendlies, Chetkosk began their international football career with a spirited but flawed appearance at the 43rd Baptism of Fire - though many claim Chetkosk's downfall was partly due to an unlucky draw against the tougher half of the tournament, manager Byshovetsiy is quick to claim the majority of the faults lie with his decisions, eventually resulting in the Puffins crashing out in the quarter-finals. Following this partial success the exact same squad went on to shock pundits worldwide as Chetkosk performed above and far, far beyond what was expected of them in the qualifying campaign of the 56th World Cup. The Puffins are one of only a select handful of nations to have ever qualified for the World Cup finals on their first attempt.

The following World Cup saw further success when the Puffins not only qualified for the finals, but also earned some points and narrowly avoided moving forward into the round of 16. This places Chetkosk in the very small group of nations who have never failed to qualify for the World Cup proper, something that the weathered veterans of Chetkoski football are forever proud of. The Puffins are now, rightfully, a force to be reckoned with, and their goal this time round is to make it to the quarter-finals.

Manager: BYSHOVETSIY, Yevgeni - Aged 53
Yevgeni Abram Byshovetsiy took the role of managing Chetkosk's national team after being forced to leave the domestic club CSKA Tomska. Most of his critics were silenced by his performance during Chetkosk's Baptism of Fire campaign, but it wasn't until a stunning qualifying effort lead to the Puffins reaching the finals of the 56th World Cup that he well and truly demonstrated his ability to successfully manage the national squad. Yevgeni is a sly tactician, has a loud and powerful character and is fully prepared to think outside the box to form new strategies.

Assistant: GRUSCHMAN, Pyotr - Aged 33
Pyotr Gruschman has an extra-ordinary talent for administration - he takes care of red tape and paperwork so Byshovetsiy doesn't have to (nor does he ever want to). Although he is far less extravertive compared to his superior, he always makes sure he is heard on the rare occasions that he does speak before the team, and his words carry many years of combined knowledge and wisdom in the sport.

Vladim Tolschtiyk is a retired player who spent the last six years of his career with CFR Dynamo Vilychek. He regularly works as a guest lecturer in Sports and Physiological Science at many Chetkoski universities and he demands a high level of knowledge and ability in his coaching staff. Vladim is adept at noticing psychological and physiological problems in the players well ahead of time - his reports of squad fitness, form and morale are rarely anything but accurate.

Scherbak won himself a place on the starting lineup through some excellent performances in the Baptism of Fire, and has taken on the number one goalkeeping role from Vasili Opuytsk following his recent retirement. His ability to dive in peculiar directions in a split second make him an ideal international goalkeeper, and following World Cup 56 he secured a transfer to Cafundéu. He is a rising star, but is prone to small, recurring injuries that remove him from action for a game at a time.

LB: KASAEV, Diniyar - #2 - aged 30 - Grêmio Lux (Cafundéu)

Kasaev used to be starting left back for CSKA Tsaritin Saints, a club that regularly enjoys a top five finish in the Chetkoski domestic league. He was also transferred to Cafundéu after World Cup 56, and the Saints' left defence has looked weaker ever since. He is a solid player and his foul tally is one of the lowest in the squad, but he is notorious for his inability to cure his pungent foot smell post game.

CB: MOSTOVOI, Igor - #3 - aged 34 - PSV Stavropol

Mostovoi is a key utility player, both for the national team and for his club, and has played in every international game for Chetkosk so far. He regularly traverses into midfield territory and can usually be trusted to place himself where he is required the most - thus he had earned the nickname "omnipresent". On occasions he has managed to score in crucial games, after moving up for a corner kick. He has stated that World Cup 57 will be his second and last for Chetkosk, but is expected to continue to serve the team as a defensive coach.

RB: SMERTIN, Anton - #5 - aged 32 - Zenit Berlinengrad

Smertin has become a Chetkoski legend as he seems to be immune to injury. His form is excellent, a relic of his second love (long distance running) and thus he has very good stamina and can be counted upon to give his all until he is taken off the pitch. Anton takes pleasure in showing up the rest of the team in training and pushes them to keep going for as long as he can. His peak physical condition likely means he will be able to continue to play well into his thirties - good news for the Puffins.

LM: BORODIUK, Nikolai - #6 - aged 33 - PSV Stavropol

Nikolai has the most accurate shot from a dead ball in the squad, and as such is designated most of the free kick opportunities. However, his strengths lie not only in shooting from stationary, but also in picking out crosses with high balls. He has recently enjoyed much praise following PSV Stavropol's arrival in the group stage of the UICA TQCC, and is unlikely to be released any time soon. Looking ahead to his retirement, Nikolai is adamant that he train up a replacement kick taker for when he leaves the squad.

Voronin is an accomplished sportsman, playing for the largest club in San Vicente Lagoon, and inspired his younger brother to follow him into the professional sporting world - though his brother is a rugby man. Marko has been plagued with groin injuries in the past, and it was questionable whether or not he would play for much longer, but his current form looks hopeful.

Heimpfel wears the captain's armband, and for good reason - his mind is calm and tactical throughout a match and his voice carries across the pitch despite not being particularly loud. A steadfast and reliable player, Byshovetsiy is dependant on him to carry his plan onto the field of play.

Alexey was originally a relatively unknown member of the starting lineup until his domestic team won the previous season's playoff and were promoted to the premier league. He has enjoyed a step up in his media coverage since then, and has not yet tired of the invasion into his private life. According to Alexey, the highlight of his career was his single international goal scored at home.

Roman has taken the place of Chetkoski legend Nico Tussak in attacking midfield, and has thus far made a superb job of filling his boots. He is not afraid to run the entire pitch several times over if he has to, and can cause a hinderance to the opposing team by being in places they don't expect him to be. Through his energetic efforts each game Roman has become an attractive target for foreign transfer.

ST: TORBINSKIY, Vyacheslav - #11 - aged 30 - Angels (Kagdazka & Pazhujebu)

Torbinskiy is by far the most accomplished goal scorer on the Chetkoski starting lineup. His finishing is magnificent and he always puts on a show with his acrobatic celebrations. His recent move to Kagdazka & Pazhujebu has seen him drop off the media radar somewhat, but he is much happier there than he ever was at CFR Zolchora City and has had enough of being a big fish in a small pond. Recent experiments with new formations have proven Torbinskiy plays just as well with a striking partner as he does on his own.

Puzin is a solid striking talent that found his way into high level football with the AZS Kemenovsk Rangers' highly successful grass roots programme.
