Welcome to the fourty-fifth edition of the prestigious Baptism of Fire, hosted by the Grand Duchy of Astograth and the Federation of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu! This thread marks the beginning of the 58th cycle of the NationStates Football World Cup!

The Baptism of Fire is one of the most renowned tournaments in all of NS Sports, one of the three competitions that make up the World Cup cycle. It accepts entry only from teams that have no KPB ranking (the equivalent of the RL FIFA World Ranking), meaning only nations who have never entered a World Cup. Sometimes this means brand new nations; sometimes this means experienced veterans who are just trying out football RPing for the first time. As one of the World Cup Committee-sanctioned events, participants can gain their first-ever KPB points and begin their long journey to the top of the NS Multiverse. Most importantly, the Baptism of Fire is the grand gateway into the big fun world of the NS World Cup and all of the drama and excitement that comes with it.

But as important the BoF is for beginning nations, it is still widely followed and appreciated by the experienced nations of the NS Sports community. Why? Because roleplay (or RP) is one of just two determining factors for success for participants (the other being sheer dumb luck). That makes the Baptism of Fire unique, and as such you can assume the whole of NS will be watching your team.

RP well and RP often, and you could see your players hoisting the trophy at tournaments' end! As has been said, the only other thing you'll need is luck; scorinators do use random numbers and, just like a game of cards, things just don't go your way sometimes. Margaret, Goddess of All Things Random, is merciless, and the dearest wish of your hosts is that you never fall victim to her cruelty. Alas, she shall surely claim many a scalp, as she always does.

This is the group stage draw for the 45th Baptism of Fire, featuring 54 nations. Groups A-E will play at Kagdazka and Pazhujebu, groups F-I will play in Astograth:

Therefore, 16 nations will play in the first round of the knockouts, 8 in the quarterfinals, 4 in the semifinals and of course 2 in the final, to be played in the 96,000-seat Graha'ajat Stidiyama in the misty, jungle-covered mountains of the Zahuj Peninsula in Pazhujebu.

New to RPing? This part's for you.

First of all, you'll want to read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying.

Second of all, and more specifically speaking, here's how this tournament will work: a scorinator (which is a computer program that weighs different factors in order to generate scores for sports games), in this case xkoranate 0.3.3, will produce results on a daily basis. In order to improve the odds that the scorinator will be kind to you and your team, you are encouraged to leave an in-character (IC) post, at any time, detailing the events that are surrounding your team, your team's fans, your team's coach... your team's... well... anything, really! This post, known as an RP, will be evaluated by the hosts and plugged into the scorinator. The most important things to take into consideration while writing your RP will be quality, creativity, and length, in that order; some spelling and grammar mistakes are acceptable, so don't get discouraged if English isn't your first language!

Even a single RP, just once during the group stage for instance, will dramatically improve your chances of beating a team that never RPs. Quality is always more important than quantity.

Need RP ideas? Think about this example. Let's say you've created a roster for your team, and you've decided that a striker named David Hernández is the best player on the squad. You can go with the most "conventional" type of RP, and write about David's performances for the team from the perspective of a newspaper match report. That's fine. But you can also take different approaches to David's Baptism of Fire experience; you could write about his experience on the field first-person, or you could write from the perspective of a fan hurling abuse at him, or you could write about an opposing player sizing him up before the game, or you could do a statistical analysis of his performances... you could even write about his personal history, long before he ever came to Astograth or K&P for the BoF!

The sky is pretty much the limit when it comes to the Baptism of Fire. In fact, the only limit is this: don't violate any RP permissions from other teams. What are RP permissions? Well...

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:

Choose my goalscorers Y/N
Godmod scoring events Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
Godmod injuries to my players Y/N
Hand out yellow cards to my players Y/N
Hand out red cards to my players Y/N
Godmod other events Y/N

Copy and paste this box into your roster, when and if you post one. Bold, italicize, or otherwise indicate your responses to all these questions, so that your opponents know how far they can go when they're talking about your team.

What does not belong here in this thread, you ask? In short, anything that isn't In Character. Do not post questions for the hosts here. Do not post tangential comments here. Do not make observations of the scores here. All of that stuff should go in the Baptism of Fire 45 Discussion Thread. If you make enough Out-Of-Character (OOC) posts in this thread to sufficiently annoy either of the hosts, you risk having your RP bonus reset, scuppering your chances of winning your next match. 'Tagging,' or posting things like 'cannot RP now, will RP here later' will be considered OOC remarks. In addition to being totally unnecessary (as in sports RPing the order in which teams make posts does not matter), they are exceptionally confusing for both hosts and fellow players to try and keep track of.

K&P and I will be adding more information here as needed, including stadium information. Good luck to you all!

Were you looking for some information about the nations you'll be playing in? Well, here you go! Should you be drawn into one of the Federation-based groups, and there's a five-in-nine chance of that happening, this post will be your go-to guide!

NSwiki Article

This is a must-read. Also, here is a map of Kagdazka and here is a map of Pazhujebu.

The Nation

Kagdazka is a cold territory in the far northern region of the Atlantian Oceanian continent Calania. The country's terrain is a mix of mountains, taiga, and tundra. In the southwest, where a large percentage of the population live, it is considerably warmer during summertime than in other parts of the country. Kagdazka is nearly landlocked, but for a tiny corridor that runs along both sides of the Dyurtyuli River, which empties into the Neyman Strait. For years, Kagdazka was ruled by a pro-capitalist dictatorship to its east, and these corporatists brutally discriminated against the ethnic Russian Kagdaz minority, who for cryptic reasons have always identified themselves with the color wisteria. So terrible was the oppression from the east that all wisteria items, whether they were flags, bedsheets, microwaves, bicycles, or even flowers, were confiscated and destroyed on sight. Consequently, the name of this imperialist former ruler is not to be spoken by anyone in the country under penalty of death.

Pazhujebu, formerly known as the Pazhujeb Islands, is an island territory on the southeastern edge of the Secocian Sea, 600 miles away from its nearest neighbor, Pacitalia. The nation is notable for having been closed off to the outside world from 269 to 1926 AD. The islands had never been occupied by any except the Pazhujebis and had never been noticed by European cartographers until it was accidentally run across in the 20th century. The country's population are found to have been mostly genetically descended from Indian peoples. There are various explanations for this phenomenon; but the Pazhujebi story is that they were violently expelled from Rome by Claudius II. Pazhujebis are known for being frustrating at the best of times, and militant at the worst. They are vehemently protective of their independence, and have in the main refused to adapt to modern society or technology (though hefty exceptions have been made for the arms manufacturing industry and for the national monorail service).

Cars are banned in the Federation. Neither fans nor players should expect to be able to get around via that mode of travel. However, in Kagdazka, travelling via sleg dog is very popular, in Pazhujebu, private yacht services can take you from place to place, and in both countries, a privately-owned but nationally-operated monorail service can take you just about anywhere.

Kagdaz Stadia

Stadium: FKM Arena
City: CMZ Metropolitan Area, Kagdazka
Capacity: 69,000 seats
Club Tenants: FKM

The cities of Chadan, Murmansk, and Zanduznyy are often lumped together into one single metropolitan area, in no small part because of the towns' uniform support for the left-wing club FKM. This club believes that positive football is as much political as it is tactical; that attacking play is equivalent to the poor farmers quest for social justice and that cynical defending is equivalent to the evil businessman's lust for money. Seem like an oversimplification to you? Yeah... those FKM fans are a bit nuts, and you can tell when you visit their stadium, a veritable industrialist workers' temple, adorned with socialist slogans, chain-link fences, and the like.

Stadium: The Ice Cube
City: Dyurtyuli, Kagdazka
Capacity: 81,000 seats
Club Tenants: Angels and Yastrabi

Kagdazka's largest stadium (situated in the largest city in the entire Federation, Dyurtyuli), home to two exceptionally wealthy teams in Angels and Yastrabi, is named as it is for two reasons. First of all, the stadium's huge cubic glass design gives it the appearance of a gigantic block of ice looming on the cosmopolitan metropolis' skyline. Second of all, and more importantly, it is located in the farthest northern reaches of Kagdazka, which is already a cold country as it is. But in Dyurtyuli the frigid air can give an unprepared visitor frostbite in minutes. Bring a jacket.

Stadium: Yuzhniy Veter Stadion
City: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Capacity: 51,000 seats
Club Tenants: Vulkan

If FKM are Kagdazka's left-wing club for over-educated socialist academics, Vulkan are the country's left-wing club for the genuinely poor and downtrodden. Another Gelendzhik team, this club's stadium is among the more scenic in the country despite its fans reputation for being destitute. The venue is constructed from dark red brick and pink clay, with four large but very simple stands on every side of the pitch, giving it the appearance of a large maroon and pink rectangle growing out of Gelendzhik's mostly-concrete cityscape. An absolutely classic locale for a football match.

Stadium: Gelendzhik Stadion
City: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Capacity: 35,000 seats
Club Tenants: Gimnasia

Gelendzhik's gray and stony architecture hides a history of class upheaval and racial strife. But from this history arises a deeply developed football culture, with a whopping four different Gelendzhik sides having appeared in the KPFA League First Division. One of those teams, based out of the eastern buroughs of the city, is the old and traditional club Gimnasia. If ever a sports team was rescued from the brink of destruction, it was when Unitopolitan newspaper tycoon bought Gimnasia and built them a desperately-needed new stadium, this one, a small but modern venue.

Stadium: Banditi Zaliv Stadion
City: Oktyabrsk, Kagdazka
Capacity: 40,000 seats
Club Tenants: Krevetka

You might not fancy a trip to Oktyabrsk, where this stadium is located, since it has a reputation as a seedy port city with a high crime rate. But in truth, you won't find many more scenic places to attend a football match in the Federation. Without a stand on the side of the pitch that faces the bay, where walruses float atop icebergs barking at each other, the venue is compact and lends itself to energetic and devout fans. If the stadium's walls (painted all over with art from local children) don't put a smile on your face, then the brewery next door probably will.

Stadium: Terpimost Stadion
City: Yayal, Kagdazka
Capacity: 13,000 seats
Club Tenants: Iguani

Hidden away down a gravel road departing west from the tiny village of Yayal, Terpimost Stadion is more nature conservation center than it is a KPFA League First Division stadium. The residents of this tiny southeast-Kagdazka town frequently and unabashedly refer to themselves as hippies. Recreational drugs are easy to purchase in this liberal haven, which isn't far from the much larger and more mainstream city of Gvardeysk. At any rate, little Iguani are a symbol for the bohemian culture in this unusual little town, as is their unusual little stadium, effectively just a couple sets of bleachers on two sides of the pitch.

Stadium: Nikel Gornyakov Sad
City: Gelendzhik, Kagdazka
Capacity: 34,000 seats
Club Tenants: BFZ

Trust us: you do not want to get drawn here, unless you're a Christian fundamentalist neo-Nazi who hates minorities. If so, you'll fit right in with the supporters of the Kagdaz club BFZ, one of the most right-wing football clubs in the world (if not the most). Their stadium, the Nikel Gornyakov Sad (Russian for Nickel Miners' Garden) is a complete dump as well; rickety stands made from thin strips of plywood that are assaulted daily by cold winds pouring off of the bitterly cold taiga adjacent to the western boroughs of Gelendzhik, where the park is located. If you're not a white person from Kagdazka, be prepared to encounter locals unhappy to see you.

Pazhujebi Stadia

Stadium: Therakham Velodrama
City: Mahathu, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 52,000 seats
Club Tenants: Therakham

The Therakham District of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu's capital has long had an inferiority complex when comparing themselves with their wealthy and arrogant neighbors from the Kuratmad district. (These hostilities are, incidentally, the focal point of the Mahathu Derby between Angels and Therakham.) But this recently-renovated stadium, home to Therakham ZL, is the pride of the black and blue half of the city. It's steep, almost vertical stands give players on the pitch the feeling that they are at the bottom of a huge cauldron, and its exterior is painted black with hi-tech blue LED lighting.

Stadium: Graha’ajat Stidiyama
City: Zhevassi, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 96,000 seats
Club Tenants: Zhevassi

The home field of Zhevassi ZL (the most successful club in the history of the Federation), this venue, the largest and most prestigious in the whole Federation, is nestled up in the misty hills east of the small town of Zhevassi and is made mostly from wood but meticulously decorated from pitch to stand to roof to entrance with soapstone sculptures, many of which are massive and built into the architecture. In Pazhujebi, the name of the stadium means "Stadium of the Planet," which tells a layman the sort of pride residents of the small Zahuj Peninsula village have in this grand park and in their club side. Visitors will enjoy themselves, but should be warned: they will get wet... it rains a lot.

Stadium: Praça de Prata
City: Mahathu, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 66,000 seats
Club Tenants: Angels

Home to the historic superclub Angels for half of its home matches, this venue is a famously imposing volcanic stone monolith growing out of the similarly stern Kuratmad District. As a sign of the district's traditional financial affluence and as an homage to the primary color of its home team, the stadium is adorned with rubies all around its exterior. Further, mirroring the archtictural traditions of the surrounding neighborhood, it has many right angles in its structure, vaguely giving it the look of a primitive, ancient temple.

Stadium: Emuzhezh
City: Emuzhezh, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 36,000 seats
Club Tenants: Raktaghav Hathi and Urnabhi

Recently remodeled, this clay and steel park rests in the middle of the medium-sized but isolated east-Pazhujebi town of Emuzhezh. It hosts one First Division match every weekend, as two Emuzhezh clubs are currently enjoying stays in the top flight: Raktaghav Hathi and Urnabhi. The two clubs have a long-standing rivalry, representing the conservative and liberal portions of the Emuzhezh population respectively. The stadium reflects this rivalry, with the seats on the south side of the stadium painted Urnabhi's white and pink, and the seats on the north side painted in Hathi's all red.

Stadium: Sampa Gumbada Stidiyama
City: Juvapanam, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 48,000 seats
Club Tenants: Juvapanam

With warm and lush public gardens stretching around the city, Juvapanam has to be one of the prettiest cities in all of the Pazhujeb Islands (also known as Pazhujebu). The city's iconic skyline is known for its stucco buildings and slate-green clay tile roofs. And the football club they've got hanging around isn't too shabby either; Juvapanam ZL won three uninterrupted First Division titles between 5244 and 5246 (though their fortunes have declined quite a bit since then). Their stadium is a microcosm of their beloved city, constructed from the same tan stucco and roofed with the same green clay tile. It sits in the middle of a large public garden and is across the street from a small zoo.

Stadium: Oberlander’ajat Stidiyama
City: Urajbina, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 41,000 seats
Club Tenants: Urajbina

The hub of Mahathan Pazhujebi culture, Urajbina is a deeply proud city; almost all residents still wear the traditional purple turban that symbolizes Pazhujebi nationality and identity. If you're looking for history museums, this is the place to be, but there are a couple gorgeous beaches too if that's more your cup of tea. And though Urajbina’s stadium pales in comparison to the size of other venues in the Pazhujeb Islands, it is one of the most beloved in the entire country. Nestled into an ancient neighborhood, the stadium was once a Roman-style coliseum and is now home to club tenants Urajbina ZL. The stands are mostly made of stone, but an elaborate draping system all around the exterior and interior of the stadium gives it the appearance of being made wholly of gold, red, and blue fabric.

Stadium: Avazhughij Arena
City: Pkethat Šede, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 47,000 seats
Club Tenants: Shadows

A rather new city that has only sprung up in the last few decades because of overpopulation in other parts of Pazhujebu, Pkethat Šede is located on Šede Island, which was for years left uninhabited because of its mysterious purple-and-green-tinted jungle. Legend holds that spirits reside there. If you’re ballsy enough to venture south from the city into the overgrowth, you’re bound to see Avazhughij Arena, home of Šede Island Shadows. It almost looks simply like a huge glass wall, as only one stand is visible from beneath the cover of leaves and violet Šede fruit blossoms. Whatever you do, don’t turn up on Šede Island wearing anything more than a T-shirt; it gets swelteringly hot here and you might very well melt.

Stadium: Purple Pearl Arena
City: Šah, Pazhujebu
Capacity: 24,000 seats
Club Tenants: Šah

The city of Šah is caught between two worlds, equidistant to the sprawling Mahathan Pazhujebi city of Pkethat Hevnaje and the iconic Zahuji Pazhujebi town of Zhevassi. But instead of being a city torn, residents of both ethnicities tend to get along very well; mostly because, thanks to the behemoth tourism cruise company Purple Pearl, everyone in Šah is enormously wealthy. The town's relatively new club is a brainchild of Purple Pearl's CEO, Qudha'madhiki Nizhu. Still the club's chairman seven years after its foundation, Nizhu has made sure the club's matches are a must-see for visitors to the town. As much a theme park as it is a football stadium, Purple Pearl Arena offers visitors water chute rides, mini golf, and five four-star restaurants. Twenty-four-thousand spectators will fit inside, but they may be quite distracted!

Here are the stadium assignments for each group.

And They're Off!

From the Germania Morgenpost

GERMANIA-The national football team left for the Federation of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu in preparation for the upcoming Baptism of Fire football tournament. Before the team left, GAR football manager Adrian Dietrich Faust gave a press conference in which he stated that while this would be the first major international football tournament he has attended, he was confident that the team would do it's utmost.

"The boys have been training very hard as you can see for the past few weeks. Naturally, we're all excited by the BoF and the prospects of winning our first major football trophy."

Although Mr. Faust was relatively upbeat, he refused to answer questions with regards to his selection of players for the GAR squad. There has existed certain controversy over his decision not to choose several prominent players such as the young and promising Ludwig Wagner and instead opting to choose a few unknown players.

Faust was also adament that his team would be the underdogs in this competition, adding that there were plenty of tough opponents in the competition.

"....Obviously you cannot underestimate the other participants. They are surely feeling the same way as us and some of the other teams are quite experienced too. So no, I don't believe this will be a walkover for us."

Nevertheless, the enthusiasm for the national team was not dampened by the cautious words of the manager as some 500 fans saw the team off at Tempelhof Airport.

To the organisers of the 45th Baptism of fire.

The Dictatorship of Actaris is extremely concerned about the details of certain players reaching other countries. Because we do do wish to single out particular players as important the sports commitee of Actaris has made the decision that the names of none of our players shall be made public. We will not disclose why this is and any attempts to question this decision or to ask questions about any players by any nations will be taken as seriously as if they have sent a spy into our nation. Ao i E sat down at his computer. He swiveled in his chair, waiting for his browser to load. When it did, he did the nescessary things, checked up on ElmoniAIR for their flight, which was fully booked, but there was still no bill, as it was unknown whether the Elmonian Team would be flying to Astograth or Kagdazka and Pazhujebu. He sighed. He hoped that information would come out soon. He was getting that nervous feeling. Of course, the Elmonians had bombed out of the Copa Rushmori, winning only one game. Here, however, he was determined to do better, to try and return to his country all the glory that had been sucked away from it by Carmadin. Carmadin. He hated that name. Like most Elmonians, he resented Carmadin rule in his land, and he was a strong supporter for Elmonian independence. While the Carmadins most likely wouldnt give a damn, a good Elmonian showing in this BoF would be nice, considering Carmadin's exit in the group stage in the last version of this tournament. He sighed, driving from his head all dirty thoughts of the C-Nation. He turned back to his computer screen, where something on the sidebar caught his eye.
Elmonia Soccer Chat! Click now!
Having nothing better to do, he clicked. His stupid slow computer took a few seconds to load the page, and when he did, he found he was on the "Follow Elmonia" page on Carmadinnationalteam.crm. That was another thing. Carmadin wouldn't even give Elmonia its own websites, its own domain name. He sighed inwardly again, and scrolled down. Another box met his eyes:
You need to Log In to disscuss Elmonian Football with fans across the globe. Please enter your username and password or Click here to create a new account

He had nothing better to do. So he clicked. His screen went black.
"What the hell?"

That little button was about to change his life.

The Crastena Ceporsta breaking news
"Joshua Baggins (OOC: the host of the show): We interrupt our programme to go live to the National Stadium of Oliveland, where our national manager, Maxo Barriel, is preparing to communicate to the nation what will be the roster for the first-ever major tournment in Oliveland's history. Greison..?"

*The image of Greison Iconex shows on the screen, holding a microphone with the logo of Crevena Ceporsta's channel. We can see Maxo Barriel on the background, behing a table, looking confident and sipping water from a bottle, while introducing himself to the hundreds of journalists and photographers. The set is probably on the stadium's conference room.*

"Greison: Hello Joshua, we're here at the National Stadium of Oliveland, where this press-conference is about to start. We've talked all day about what could possibly be the roster chosen by Maxo Barriel, some journalists here have also asked him already who will he choose, and although he didn't quite said it, I believe we will have some surprises. But..." *Greison takes his hand to his ear, turns around and start talking quiter* "It appears he's ready for it. Stay tuned."

*The camera moves to focus and zoom on Maxo Barriel*

"Maxo: (...)noon everyone, and thank you all for being here. With no further ado let's get to it, shall we?" *Maxo clears his voice, grab a paper from the table and starts reading it* "National team of Oliveland for the fourty-fifth edition of the Baptism of Fire. Goalkeapers: Ebrahim Hilton, Sumamud Kontofalski and Jackson Kontofalski; Defenders: Manzaru Piriquit, Romariano Lemur, Lucaku Anastasiuz, Jackson Fernandéz Carlon, Sapugaru Romenozi, Wythore Santunis and Rawrvina Dynomonteh; Midfielders: Saskatchun Tigreson, Gargantun Junior, Gargantun Senior, Patrick Starla and Silithus Furoder; Forwards: Henry Olaria, Josentin Olive, Gicant Exton, Papadreus Holaded and Statan Carléu. This are the players I belive will make any olivandish proud, and will be making history in Kagdazka and Pazhujebu. Now, I'm up for some questions, anyone?"

*The camera turns again towards Greison*

"Greison: And there we have it Joshua, our first national team that will represent us on the fourty-fifth edition of the Baptism of Fire. Back to you on the studio."

*Joshua's image appears once more on the tv screen*

"Joshua: So finaly, after some spectulation, we finaly have the full 20-man roster for the World Competition. Let's see once more the chosen by Maxo Barriel."

One of the age-old stories told in Sìgerén is that of 傻瓜聪明, Shǎguā Cōngmíng, the cleverest man in ancient times. He was a simple farmer, like all of his neighbors. He never liked his work, though; he always thought that the ruling spirit of the earth was too volatile to provide him with a sufficient harvest, no matter how hard he tried. So he farmed, farmed unhappily, farmed because it was his duty.

Duty is very important in Rén religion. It is determined by the four spirits, or the Four People - hence the name Sìgerén (which means "four people" in Nányǔ). The Four People are Àirén (Love, 爱人), Zhìnéng (Intelligence, 智能), Èrén (Ferocity, 恶人), and Dìqiú (Earth, 地球). Together, in English, they spell LIFE; separately, they are the basic elements that form the perfect human being. Love is the driving passion behind anything; intelligence is the cunning and wit necessary for success; ferocity is the heart and toughness that compels one to tackle anything with vigor; earth is the basic environment that unites all people. All people are born with these four elements - but the independent human mind and body uses them as they please, depending on their faith in the elements' controlling spirits. Therefore, it is understood that everybody has a duty to appease the Four People and live a life of good as determined by them.

Farming was Shǎguā's duty. The duty of most, actually; what else was there to do for the Rén, surrounded by water and stuck in a hot environment on arable land?

Shǎguā was clever, though. He had no reason to commit himself to backbreaking work when he would receive no more reward than would he working less hard. But clever Shǎguā knew if he seemed like his actions were halfhearted, the spirits would take actions to punish him. So he slyly pretended he was hard at work: drawing lines in the dirt as though he had planted youthful crops, painting the tips of grass to give the illusion of bountiful flowers, even putting carved fake vegetables into his basket at harvesttime like his farm had borne a harvest of plenty.

He became very good at his craft, this new craft he had devised for his own ease. He spent many years this way, satisfied with his life, seeking nothing else. However, he eventually became aware that he was disrespecting one of the holy spirits, Àirén. Always he acted to please the Four People, and he recognized that an outlet was necessary to release one of the four major natural elements of the human body. Infatuation consumed Shǎguā - the idea of it, anyway, and how he may discover it.

Background:
The land of Oasirica is a large and beautiful one. Consisting of one main island and a handful of surrounding smaller ones, it can be found towards the north-west of the Vatmark region of Rushmore. The capital city of Sant'Elia is by far the biggest conurbation, and it shines with its golden spires and silver domes, whilst clean running water flows across the land and around the cities in an extensive network of aqueducts, channels, and canals. The land is arable, the weather ranges from chaparral around the coasts to temperate up in the rocky hills, and its people are learned and sophisticated individuals. They are intelligent, highly cultured, and religious people, and the land is dominated by one religion, upon which there is almost universal belief. The patriarchate governmental system is also based on this religion, with priests and those in the church holding a high amount of respect, as are those who work in developing the nation's significant technological advances. The science vs church debate is almost non-existent however, with the party line being that the scientists are working to uncover the secrets of the Creator.

Since the deposition of the tyrannical Captain Giovanni a few years ago and despite many relics of his rule, the people are happy, and crime is low thanks to the omnipresent police and military/national service guards. The nation has recently opened its borders to Djocorangan refugees fleeing from the atrocities of the civil war raging within the small Rushmori nation, and following the successful integration and acceptance of these refugees, the government is moving well past the isolationist stance of Captain Giovanni's regime and welcoming the world into its borders. The only blight on the current landscape is the presence of a deadly plague known as la Plaga. Nobody is quite sure of its origins, but this new disease seems to have started in the west of the country and is moving east alarmingly quickly. It is a rapid killer, and kills nearly 100% of those infected. Scientists and doctors are therefore going to be entombing themselves in the central hospital of Sant'Elia towards the start of the BoF, and will be attempting to develop a vaccine or cure from within a time wall. This technology, developed in secret in the tech-labs of the military police as a means of interrogating suspects without running out of time to charge them, will be set up as a curtain around the hospital, freezing time outside it from the perspective of those within. It won't be a fixed rate, but a month will equate roughly to an hour, so whilst it may take years inside the hospital to work on the vaccine, outside it only days will have passed, potentially allowing many thousands of lives to be saved.

Football in Oasirica is the national sport, and support is fanatical. The Campiocinato has been established for forty-three years as the football league structure in the country, with three divisions, A-Liga, B-Liga, and C-Liga. The seasons so far have been dominated by Qolo-Qolo (12 Campiocinatos), and the big four Sant'Elia clubs; Caballeros CF (7), Magisterio AC (5), Condensadores CD (5), and CA Conquistadores (5). Académica di Terrabianco (2), Unión Gimignano CF (2), Atletico Sant'Elia, RCD San Marco, AS Débardeurs Nationale, and Internazionale are the other clubs to have sealed a title so far, and CA Conquistadores are the current holders, having retained their trophy recently. Most big clubs are represented in the selection of players to go to the BoF, with inspirational captain Stefano Velasquez looking to unite the usually very partisan fans of the Sant'Elia clubs so that they may get behind and support the team.

Session 1

Postby Yesopalitha » Wed Jan 04, 2012 5:15 pm

A new RPing idea I had. Hope it's presentable.

Hilary Vander Rox's Blog Session - 1: Before the Draw
Welcome to http://www.yesopalithasports.com, where Hilary Vander Rox will answer all your questions about the Baptism of Fire team for an hour every few days! Get on, and ask away! Hilary will pick out questions to answer, live!
Note from the site: Hilary will be with us shortly. You may begin sending in questions now.

2:00 PM

HVR0037: Hey guys! Hilary Vander Rox, the Captain of the Yesopalitha Flames, here with you. Without further ado, let's get to your questions!
2:01 PM

HVR0037: Question from Billy Vosbane, from Wolvesbane: "Why is Nadya Dostoevich playing left forward? She's tiny! She weighs, what, 139 pounds? She's going to get killed!" I appreciate your concern, Billy, but don't worry about dear Nadya. If you want to worry about anyone, worry about the other teams who are going to underrate her. I tell Nadya that she should be a track star. She's blazing fast, and tougher than she looks. Also, she's so small that she can squeeze past defenders and really make them pay for underestimating her. I know that she's small, but I am with Manager Mitchell with this one: Nadya's a great player, and she belongs out there with us.
2:04 PM

HVR0037: Comment from FlamesForever0122: "I wish you the best of luck. I watched you play soccer in the Oxen Cup, and I think it was amazing how you scored so many goals! Hopefully you can do as well this tournament!" Thank you, FlamesForever0122. I will try my best. The Oxen Cup, although it had some of the best pure athletes of the world, didn't have the pure soccer players. I presume it'll be harder for us to score during the World Cup cycle. I appreciate your support, and hopefully we won't let you down!
2:07 PM

HVR0037: Question from Jimmy: "What is it like to be on the same team as your younger sister, Jane?" Hi Jimmy! Thanks for stopping by! I love Jane. We've played against each other, practicing at home, for years! She plays defense, but I always tell her that she should be in the midfield with me. If we ever need a goal with a few minutes to go and we're getting desperate, look for Manager Mitchell to bring Jane up the field. She's a great kid, with amazing footwork, and a tenacity to come through in the clutch. I bet she can shoot PK's better than I can! I think my sister, as well as some of the young players on this team, haven't hit their prime yet. I hope to help them with gaining confidence and such, and I have no doubt that they'll shine and be the face of Yesopalithan soccer in the future.
2:11 PM

HVR0037: Comment from BDickinson#1Fan: "Do you know anything about the competition or who will be the ones to beat?" Well, BDickinson#1Fan, first, I love your nickname. Bethany is a wonderful person to talk to... Anyways, to your question. The Baptism of Fire is a tournament of first-time nations, so I have no idea what to expect at all. I think the element of surprise is one of the parts of this tournament. As for the Main World Cup... We're going to be running into powerhouses left and right... It's not going to be easy.
2:15 PM

HVR0037: Comment from HaleyIsMyHero: "You're the best Haley! I love you! Best of luck!" Thank you so much, fan!
2:17 PM

HVR0037: Question from WilsonMadness: "Any idea what kind of formation you guys will be playing? Manager Mitchell hasn't said much to the press. Just wondering." To be honest, WilsonMadness, I have no clue. I think we're still going to go with the standard 3-4-3, but Manager Mitchell is having us play all over the field. I mean earlier today I played left-center mid, then right-center mid, then only center mid, and even some up front. I think he wants to make sure that if we need to make adjustments/have a major injury, we can cope with it. Better be prepared, right?
2:22 PM

HVR0037: Question from JamesIsMyBrother: "What do you think about James Dotson and his chances in goal? Do you miss Brianna Karson?" I have to laugh, because I doubt James is your brother. I think he'll do fine. He has Jane covering him, and she's a beast. Also, he's very athletic, and respectful. He always asks questions, and the other day, he asked for me and Earie to stay after practice so he could practice blocking PK's more. Any time a player takes extra time after practice to fine-tune their skills, you see dedication. And dedication does pay off. I think he'll hold his own, and as long as we do our jobs to help him out, he'll be just fine. As for the second part of your question... Brianna was amazing, I love her. But she's more of a hockey goalie. She was asked to try out, but she actually turned it down, saying that she was going to be the spokesperson to try to integrate hockey into Yesopalithan culture. I wish her the best of luck. We'll be fine with James.
2:29 PM

HVR0037: Question from MNYF1: "When you got to meet Madame Nirdasil after the return home from Qazox, were you nervous?" Oh, MNYF1, you have no idea how much I was nervous! She was amazing! Congratulated us, had a nice dinner, took pictures, even got to shake her hand! And yes, she is indeed part Elf, her ears are pointy! I kept staring at her, and then she looked me in the eye, and I blushed... I was so embarrassed... Then she smiled at me and kept talking about the future of sports in Yesopalitha. I have never seen a woman more dedicated to her country. It is an honor to be a Yesopalithan.
2:34 PM

HVR0037: Question from WorldTraveler: "Which country would you rather be at for the group stage, Astrogath or Kagdazka and Pazhujebu?" It doesn't really matter to me, WorldTraveler. It is an honor to travel to any country to represent my country to the world. I am sure that they will both be cordial, and very appreciative of the soccer players we send. Wherever they send us, we will go, and get to see a new country!
2:38 PM

HVR0037: Question from VictoriaCastere: "Which player that we don't know of at the moment will we be talking about in the future?" Hm. A sleeper pick? A good question, Victoria. As Captain of this team, I think that anyone can step up and become a superstar. But if you had me pick a few... Nike is going to have an enforcer role, punishing players with tackles. He will be feared by opposing forwards. And I think that Vincent will surprise a few people with his breakaway speed - especially opposite Nadya. Those two can make mincemeat of defenses if they don't watch out. Sorry I can't do a better job with that question.
2:43 PM

Note from the site: No other questions will be accepted.
2:45 PM

HVR0037: Let's go through some more here. Comment from NoName: "Is the pressure tough on you guys after how the other Yesopalithan teams have done so well in the past so far?" Good question, No Name. I wish I knew what to call you. Anyways, I guess success is expected of us, but I don't think it's something to stress about. It's a motivational factor. When you know that your people expect the best from you, it inspires you to do more, you know what I mean? I think I speak for myself and my teammates when I say that we're taking this tournament very seriously, and because other teams have shown that new teams can make an instant impact, we know that we can do the same if we practice and prepare hard enough. That is our goal.
2:48 PM

HVR0037: Oh, and just to let you know, guys: I don't know exactly how long I'll be able to be on once the tournament begins. I'll try to make it at least a half hour though, and longer if I can.
2:49 PM

HVR0037: One last question, from YesopalithaPride: "What is the biggest goal of this tournament?" YesopalithaPride, our coaches and managers in every sport stress one thing over and over again. They tell us that winning is important, and that winning is fun. But the #1 goal of any Yesopalitha team in any sport is to respect our opponents and to earn their respect. The Oxen Cup team did that. The IBC team did that. The Di Bradini team also did that. We respect them, we earn their respect, and we become known in the world as a country of solid, good citizens and athletes who can play ball. That is our main goal. That will always be our main goal. Heck, even if we finish without a single win, if other countries saw that we respected them through every phrase of it, that's all that matters.
2:56 PM

HVR0037: Well that is all from me today, folks! I will talk to you after the draw, talking about what we know of our opponents, where we will be playing, etc.! Have a great one, and... Perseverantia Saeculorum! Perseverance without end! Bye!
2:59 PM
