Seichelli, Ithadi, the Island Commonwealth, approx. 100 miles north of Thatius

The layover to Cafundeu was terrible. For over a week the delegation of Thatius was stuck in Ithadi, an island chain almost like Thatius, except a few things like the people, culture, and architecture. The mountains look the same, the water feels the exact same temperature as in Thatius, yet it was all different to Vittoria Lambadorey. She was strolling one of the famed beaches of Ithadi, with it's white sand, crystal-clear water, and abundant dolphins jumping off in the distance. What Vittoria was upset about, she didn't know herself. Maybe it was the anxiety of this whole trip. Cafundeu was another world away, yet she had travelled to many different nations. But this time it felt different, she was competing for something bigger, yet harder to come by: glory for her nation. She knew that to win a gold medal, it would mean almost endless celebrations in Fajaravik and all across Thatius. It was one thing to win a title or be a top 5 tennis player, but it was another to bring home a gold medal from the Olympic Games.

As Vittoria strolled down the beach, she thought about what happened recently. The engine failure and emergency landing in Seichelli, the near-collision she had with a taxi cab, and the fight with some of her friends. Vittoria knew she could outlast and outwit her compatriots, but they were tired of her "snobbery." When she confronted them about it, they had enough and the yelling started. Eventually she ended it by walking out the door and storming out in to the street, where a taxi almost hit her. She had not known those kind of reflexes in quite a while. But thankfully, they were enough to save her from something that could have put her tennis career in jeopardy.

The first plane going to Cafundeu had made it almost five days ago. But her plane leaves Ithadi in just a few hours. Hopefully she'll make it in time for the opening of the Olympic Games. After all, the Thatian delegation would be short half it's team if they were to arrive late. But the Opening Ceremony was just something she could not wait for; or the Olympics overall. Vittoria was ready to watch her fellow countrymen fight for the prize and earn at least a medal. After the brutal war with Ithadi and economic collapses a few years ago, Vittoria knew that Thatius deserved at least some form of recognition on an international stage. "Too long have we been the back-burner of the world. Other nations have their defending title, and that seems enough for them to have it year after year. It's time for the upsets to occur, and perhaps a new champion."

A bold statement, she knew. But hopefully words would prove their worth and she would win Olympic Gold. Vittoria and one of her best friends, Novak Dlouhy, have one of the best chances to win a medal for Thatius. Both are Top 5 Tennis Players and have played their hearts out recently. Now is the chance to shine. But let's hope that plane arrives on time.

The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

"...or that's what they say in, like, Civ 4, whatever that is. Dwayne I'm not talking to you, if you stopped being so paranoid and actually practice the field hockey team might suck less. Hello world! This is Stan from the Department of Citizens' Affairs! I mean, I'm from Zwangzug, that's why I'm talking to the world, isn't it?

Yes, hello. Zwangzug. Despite being on the Executive Council for the next few weeks, apparently we've slipped off a few global radars as far as the opening ceremony is concerned, but then again, this is the Obelisco Monumental, and Zwangzugians are probably always going to be more famous for walking off this field than on it. Or at least one of them is. Whatever.

Anyway. Are there some expectations for doing well here? Well, a few. The cyclists, coming off their, um, showings, at...things, are likely to do wellish, ideally beating out a few cyclists from countries that make louder noises about cycling. That'd be nice anyway. The...whoa, are we?...oh no wait, the dates are just written...that's so weird. Um. The bocce players could do well, before losing to the hosts, in principle. And do we have sailors now? Again? That's probably nice.

So as you can maybe tell, except the cyclists, who have a whole tour system set up here, honestly, not a lot of the other sports have any real organization in Zwangzug. But as you might also know, we sent a delegation to the Paralympics once. And that went pretty well. Both in terms of winning metals despite having a...uh...not...good...team? But also because most of the athletes came from the A-League, and stuff, like, happened. So basically there were government people BUT NOT SPONSORING THINGS WITH TOO MUCH TAXPAYER MONEY OR WHATEVER kind of hanging out and making things go well BUT NOT CENSORING THE NEWSPAPERS OR ANYTHING and we pulled through.

So now that that's kind of worked out, I mean, this is Cafundéu, strings will have to be pulled anyway. I think the players are going to wear ads or something? That's been, like, sorted out? Somehow? But the point is even though a lot of the non-cyclists might be very talented amateurs whose day jobs are in the public sector, because so many people's jobs are in the public sector it's not surprising, obviously the government can't be too closely tied with things or there wouldn't be ads. If there were ads or whatever. You got that? Good.

The most high-ranking bureaucrat in the day job is Kelly Farquiss, a backup on the field hockey team, in the department of education. So she's stuck with the flag. Not because she's all that nationalistic or anything but they decided they needed a system.

ALSO WE TOTALLY HAVE A TENNIS TEAM AND I GET TO COMMENTATE AND I'M SO PSYCHED."

Darmen Times-Olympic Coverage
Preview of Darmen at the VI Olympiad

In our fourth edition of our Olympic preview, we take a look at the Athletics Delegation. Trust me, it took a long time to write this.

Greg Van Sumeran-Head Coach-Greg is the father of John and Mike. He has tons of experience at both the coaching level and the competive level. Led Darmen to a third place team finish in the first Wadomia Invantational.

John Van Sumeran-Sprinting Coach-John was a beast at the 100 and 200 meter dashes in High School and College. We can only hope that he can teach our sprinters to run the way he did.

Mike Van Sumeran-Distance Running Coach-Mike dominated the 2mile and 5k events in High School. He's done a pretty good job coaching Perry.

Bob Halverstrum-Jumping Coach-Halverstrum likes to jump. You'll never be able to get him to stand still. And he's put that philosophy to his coaching.

Tyler Ulman-Throwing Coach-Ulman likes to throw things. Especially at people. How would you like to have a javlin come flying at your head?

Bob Riley-100m dash, 4x100m relay-Riley is a great sprinter. Will probably win the National Championships, which will take place sometime in September or October.

Ryan Morgenson-100m dash, 4x100m relay-Morgenson will look to help the relay team when he runs anchor, as he adds a tremendous kick in the finishing 30 meters.

Usain Lightning-100m dash, 4x100m relay-Lightning definatly isn't Lightning fast. But he was still goo enough to make it onto the team.

Bonom Batesian-200m dash-With the 200 being his only event, Batesian should be very focused on this event. Don't be suprised if he makes it to the Semifinal heats, possibly even a Finals appearence.

Mikael Georges-200m dash-Georges is always confused with Mikael Gibbons, who is the new Manager of the Darmeni Soccer Team. But he's a sprinter, trust us.

John van Burat-200m dash-Burat clearly has no life, as he spends most of his time drinking beer. But he's good at running away from the cops, on foot. No wonder he's on the team.

Dodor Drevan-400m dash, 4x400m relay-Drevan definatly has a chance to win a medal in the 400. He'll also lead the relay team, hopefully to a good performance.

Carvello Moretti-400m dash, 4x400m relay-Moretti came to Darmen to escape a war in some other country. Hopefully he wasn't efected by Darmen's Civil War and Insurgency in the South.

Josh Hogan-400m dash, 4x400m relay-Hogan works mostly for Interim Prime Minister Scat Peari's campaign team. Speeking of which, wern't elections supposed to start this week?

Horace Burace-800m run-Burace, who is competing only in the 800, is likely to advance to the Finals. He has a good finishing kick, and coach Mike Van Sumeran is optimistic about Burace.

Sterling Jones-800m run-Jones is a true jokester. He loves to play pranks on everybody. And according to rumor, he's been instructed by the IG-2 to play tricks on the Wolfmanni delegation.

Jim Thorpe-800m run-Thorpe has lost his speed that he used to have back in his high school days. He obviously eats too many patato chips and watches too much TV.

Scott Perry-1,500m run, 5k, 10k-And then their's Perry. Perry might be one of the greatest runners in Darmen of all time. He's won several medals at the Wadomia Invantation. Hopefully he can carry over that success to the olympics. His best chance for a medal is in the 10k run.

Tim Prince-1,500m run, Marathon-Prince is definatly focusing on the Marathon. He has a good chance to win the event. But will the Cafundeuse heat will get to him? Only time will tell. Wait, is it even hot in Cafundeu?

Brady Pittenger-1,500m run-Pittenger clearly doesn't want to be here. He's missing out on the Mcleod Cup.

Adam Badington-5k-Badington is well, bad. He has a very short fuse. Don't be suprised if he punches a Wolfmanni athlete in the face. We sure won't be.

Derich Cyberton-5k-Cyberton would much rather be at home on the computer. Only problem is, his mother won't let him.

Ivan Jerruk-10k-Jerruk is probably Darmen's third best long distance runner behind Perry and Prince. Could he possibly be the second best in the world? Probably not.

Gerrie Helvore-10k-Helvore shouldn't do that bad, but he certainly won't threaten any of the favorites.

Dennis Reyes-110m hurdles, 400m hurdles-Reyes is quite good at both events, but would greatly appreciate it if he won a medal in the 110m race.

William Fetterman-110m hurdles, 400m hurdles-Fetterman is much better at the 400, but he will try his best in the 110m race.

Todd Meis-110m hurdles-A retired army soldier, Meis is only fast when he's running from bullets. And the starting gun doesn't count.

Juan Bevis-400m hurdles-Bevis would much rather be competing in the normal 400m race, but he could only make the team on the Hurldes event.

Adi Ryanti-4x400m relay-Ryanti demanded that he be allowed to compete. Apparently the Track & Field Federation Commisioner is a softie, 'cause he gave in.

Kiernan Litwiller-Pole Vault, Long Jump-The Jumping events arn't very popular in Darmen, but Litwiller's flare gives him a good sized fan base.

Others competing that we're to lazy to write about-Shot Put:Kline Matthew, Nickolas Operon, Madison Addison
Discus:Ryan Sampson, Perot Queen, Tyrone Ulberg
Javelin:Ziradi Boquo

Perry should be a contender to win medals in all of the events, while Prince will probably win a medal in the Marathon. Litwiller will place very high in both of his events, and Sampson will do very well in the Discus Throw.

The opening ceremony at the Obelisco Monumental filled all the organizers, participants and fans with expectation. And they had to expect a little more, as the event began twenty minutes later than when it was supposed to happen. Rumours are that one of the responsible ones for the lights of the stadium was fired for sleeping during the job less than an hour before he should start working on the ceremony, and had to be replaced. But the more likely reason was that it took longer than expected the process of checking the ones entering the stadium, charging them the appropriate costs, and then allowing them to sit on their places. The stadium was filled, just like what has happened in World Cup finals and other big football matches, but this time the show on the field would be another.

Instead of just relying in local artists, the COC decided to invest hard on foreign attractions, including some strange tribe for an unknown country whose instruments produced a very peculiar song. Dancers were recruited from several regions in order to compose a team capable of a memorable performance. And, when it came the time for the Cafundelense artists, they didn't disappoint too. The decrepit rock singer Erik Stock Market seemed a bit dazed, perhaps due to the importance of performing in such a big event, which surely includes a big pressure even for someone close to eighty years old. Alana Borghi, a much younger and popular singer nowadays, impressed more the ones watching the opening ceremony due to her looks more than for her talent.

But the COC still had some curious choices to include in the ceremony. People would believe that the committee wouldn't repeat the same choice of bringing a stand-up comedian to the ceremony just like happened in São Jorge for the Winter Olympics, but they did. This time the comedian was more talented, but surely his presence in the middle of dancers, acrobats and singers was weird, especially because he spoke in Portuguese and then someone had to translate the same joke in English. Nevermind the work that commentators from foreign nations had in translating everything to their local languages during their transmissions. The COC also brought a motorcycle expert, who made several impressive moves using an improvised track.

When it was time for the associations to enter, Kelssek entered first due to hosting the previous Olympic Games, surely in the view of the fact that Cafundéu did the same thing in the previous Winter Olympics in Ashton. Then came the nation of Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk, which surely made half of the commentators working on the ceremony to quit their jobs due to the impossibility of speaking that name right. All the delegations entering were met with the applause from the fans. Landau Institute, however, didn't receive a reception as warm as the other delegations, due to the rivalry with the Cafundelenses. Some nations also had specific groups of fans, such as the monks from The Archregimancy.

The Cafundelense delegation was the last one to enter, and the fans commemorated that by lifting money notes and waving them at the direction of the athletes. This caused some problems as some of the fans tried to grab the notes from the people around them, but they were quickly fined for their behaviour and ended losing money instead of earning more. Finally, when it was time for the Games to be officially open, Marcos Mentor, President of the Cafundelense Olympic Committee, had to make the announcement, as the Emperor Raúl I got too drunk during the festivities to speak properly. The Olympic Torch was lit in time, and surprising everyone by burning with more intensity than it should, creating even a risk of a fire inside the stadium. This was controlled.

OOC: cutoff for day 1 set to be at 13:00 UTC time. Currently handling the group draws of the team sports, but it may take longer than expected, and perhaps only tomorrow right before the cutoff

Lets take a look at the Badminton Delegation.

Al Pach Ino-Head Coach-Pach Ino was considered one of the best Badminton players in the world, until of course it was revealed that the birdie he used in his exhibition tour was remote controlled. He still is the only Darmeni citizen quallified enough to coach the team.

Phillip Hushovd-Singles, Doubles-Hushovd is good considering the level of Badminton tallent in Darmen. He won't compete for a medal though.

Charles Greganson-Singles, Doubles-Greganson likes to play doubles better that singles, and with him paired with Hushovd, Darmen might be able to go far in the competition.

Thommie Voeckler-Singles-Would much rather be in Darmen working as Mayor of Cassio Villa. Note: Cassio Villa is a made up town that exists only in Voeckler's mind.

Darmen just doesn't like Badminton that much, so we arn't going to win any medals. How sad.

Olympic cycling changes slammed

The choice of the Cafundelense city of Lasft as the host of the sixth Olympic Games has proven to be a controversial one. The infamous Cafundelense taxes are at the forefront of many of the controversies though having recently acquired a machine capable of produces fake vintem notes such concerned are believe to be of little bother to the Olympic Committee of Sorthern Northland (OCSN), instead it is changes in the cycling programme of events causing consternation.

The individual pursuit, points race and madison have all been dropped as medal events in favour of the much disliked omnium, an event that Sorthern Cycling commissioned studies have shown that 9.84 out of 10 children across the world don't understand or find remotely interesting. Whilst known Delaclav medal whore Daniel Cancellara is understood to be excited at the chance of adding a medal from yet another event to his collection, Sorthern Cycling and the OCSN have been joined in a boycott of the omnium events by fierce rivals Krytenia

Despite a OCSN proposal for the individual pursuit, madison and point races to be included as demonstration events receiving backing from a number of nations the organisers chose to turn a deaf ear to those pleas, something which has not gone down well with Sorthern Cycling's newly appointed Performance Director Fran Ventoso, a man who includes a points race gold medal in his six strong collection.

“It's baffling for me. I've spoken to cyclists and cycling fans across the world and an overwhelming majority have told they want the events that have been dropped and don't want the omnium. Of course they were not reinstated as we would have liked so we though okay we can compromise, let's have them as a demonstration event. They have a real history in the Olympics and would have been keenly contested and followed, but instead we have things like golf, card games and billiards as demonstration events. Things which aren't even proper sports. It's silly and very dissapointing.”

Following a series of controversies related to Sorthern Northland's former Olympic chef-de-mission Seán Ó Faoláin the role has been instead given to Matthew Clements at these Games. In his first public statement he appeared keen to avoid confrontation with authority by commenting on the cycling issue, “Cycling has changed and the organisers and the Olympic Committee have obviously felt it necessary to do this for what ever reason. We put forward a proposal which the organisers saw fit not to implement. If is disappointing naturally, but it was well within their right and we shall put the matter behind us and look to concentrate on our objectives in these Games.”

Along with Ó Faoláin the women's hockey team were a major source of controversy for many at the previous Summer Olympics. A series of alleged misbehaviour by a team made up of Year 12 students from Corcaigh's Meánscoil na Talamhglas came to a head after an alleged arson forced Akbarabadi athletes to evacuate their premises in the Olympic Village in Outineau. Such events however haven't prevented the OCSN from once again looking to schoolchildren for the hockey events with a team of students from Rivieroever College in Nieuw-Amsterdam representing Sorthern Northland in the men's tournament, whilst the women's tournament will see a team from Windlesham's Ashmead Comprehensive competing.

Ashmead headteacher Sophie Cunningham has gone on record to express her pride at her school's role in the Olympics saying “It's a great honour and privilege for our school to be a part of such a big event. I have every faith that the team shall represent both the school and nation in an exemplary manner.”

Lara Coleman is among those expected to be in the squad and she told the Sports Pink that she and her peers “Are really looking forward to it, init? It's going to be mental, you know Natália yeah? Her parents are from Lasft init so she goes on holiday there, like every year. She's knows all the good places to go, all the bars and stuff and where we can get in and stuff, so it's going to be proper mental like.”

“And we're playing hockey as well or something aren't we? Our school won the national championship, so yeah, hopefully we'll do well. Or whatever. Prick.”

THE OPENING CEREMONY

Camwood entered the opening ceremony fifteenth. As for attention, Camwood couldn't have been in a better spot...right after the host, Canfandeu. "The Tulip March" national anthem played and Swimmer Terry Schrock came out with the flag everyone else waved Camwood and Canfandeu flags. We asked Schrock why they waved Canfandeu flags.

"To pay tribute to our hosts." He replied. "We need and should be repsectful to them because they welcomed us into their home, thier nation."

Camwood didn't aim to be the most flashiest dressed, and didn't do it. Thety wore khaki pants with a blue polo shrt that had a yellow tulip on the breast pocket. an estimated six hundred Camians have flown into Lafst, Canfandeu, to spectate the games. They are also there to enjoy the rich culture of Canfandeu.

"...this is NCSE, Sports-Talk Radio for Valdemont and everything that goes with it, coming to you from Lasft, host city of the VI Summer Olympiad! Your hosts, Michel Beaubois and Jean-Patrice Valrémy!"

"And we're back, here in Lasft, fresh off the opening ceremonies, and quite the ceremony, don't you agree?"

"Exactement, Michel, c'était absoluement merveilleux, the lighting of the Olympic fire, followed by the traditional imposition of a 15% fire-lighting surtax. A great moment for Cafundéu and for its second city, Lasft, which has become the first city of the world for this summer."

"F***ing taxes. I swear, any country where I pay $100 in tax on a $50 bar tab has a ways to go before joining the ranks of civilized countries. I'm starting to pay taxes in my dreams."

"We share a region with our hosts, these days. Manners! Please!"

"Quite right, mon bon gaillard. So what about the choice of entertainment? Stand-up comedy, ne me trompez pas, is a wonderful thing, but it needs a certain edginess to it, and I'm not sure how you're supposed to bring that edginess in front of the youth of the world, especially with a fairly formidable language barrier to overcome."

"Well, as you might recall, back in the day I had a minor in Portuguese and Lusitanian Studies back at Valdemont City College, so I listened to the local radio broadcast without the translation, and I was surprised how far out he was willing to go. Especially that one joke about the duck copulating with his mother-in-law."

"Um, Michel, judging from the frantic gesticulation coming from the translator's studio over yonder, I would say you probably misinterpreted that joke pretty badly."

"Huh! This profane text message from our producers is telling me it was a relatively harmless pun about the difference between AO athletes and those from Rushmore. Hey, what is Rushmore, anyway?"

"Something we missed out on during our 80 years away from international affairs, probably. Speaking of, what happened to The Kingdom of the Midlands, anyway?"

"Beyond me, Jean-Patrice. So what's the big story from day One of the Olympics, at least from our petty, provincial viewpoint?"

"That would have to be the return of the NMS Paladins to international footballing competition. But the first medal for NMS might come from the Men's 10 meter air pistol event."

"Air pistol? Like paintball?"

"...yeah, je pense."

"Why is that a medal event?"

"No idea."

"Do they fire paintballs?"

"I don't see why they wouldn't."

"Well, we'll have some answers for our listeners after these messages."

Darmen Times-Olympic Coverage
Preview of Darmen at the VI Olympiad

Lets take a look at the 54th ranked team in the world, the Darmeni National Basketball Team.

Kevin Loughry-Head Coach-Kevin is coach of both the National Team and Scott City University. He led Darmen to a 3-5 record in IBC 8.

Cotton Fittsimmoni-Assistant Coach-Fittsimmoni really could use a massage. Acording to rumor, he is apparently suicidal due to all of the presure surrounding the Darmen Basketball Federations call for new coaches should Damren fail to advance beyond the Group Stages.

Patrick Ripley-Assistant Coach-Ripley loves to coach. Could it be that coaching 7 youth teams might be a little to much.

*Note:All averages are from IBC 8 and the '10 College Season.
Michael Beasty-Forward-Beasty averages 26.2 points per game.

Terry Cutledge-Forward-Cutledge averages 21.7 points per game.

Hebert Davis-Forward-Davis averages 21.4 points per game.

Jervaughn Sceles-Guard-Sceles averages 20.4 points per game.

Scott Perry-Guard-Perry averages 50.5 points per game.

Now granted, Perry isn't going to average 50.5 points in the Olympics, but he dominates the Darmeni Collegiate scene.

Substitutes-G:Dell Carry, G:Dale Ellison, G:Courtni Lee, G:Sean Sinletery, G:Randy Foil, F:J. J. Hepson, G:Asia Jones, G:Malik Hairson, G:Glen Rivera, F:Richard Hendricks

Out of the substitutes, Carry is the most impressive.

For Darmen, this Olympics will be the testing grounds for IBC 9. Should Darmen perform poorly, you can expect lots of players from the U-18 IBC to find themselves on the roster, along with several new coaches, and perhaps, a dead one.

Chuckio set to enter World Stage in Olympics
Chuckio is set to make it's debut in Mens Soccer, or as other nations call it, Football. The Chuckio team has played in a few tournaments before this, but they really didn't impress any one. Chuckio is led by Manager Cafi Uni Deui.

Vulshainian Olympic News

Hello everyone! This is Yermolai Vadimaron for VCNMN's Vulshainian Olympic News! The 2011 VI Summer Olympics hosted here at Lasft, Cafundeu have begun!

The opening ceremony was a blast. After the athletes from Virabi, Vulshain enters. And...Oh my gosh! The flagbearer is none other than Erik Rainard, the younger brother to the Monarch of Vulshain, His Majesty King Samuil Rainard! This is the first time a member of the Royal Family of Vulshain has taken part in an international competition. Amongst the various lobo, vulpine, and human athletes, we see many fan favorites here today, such as Erik Rainard, Canxami Nokastre, sailboarding champion Helena Czesława, Winter Olympics athlete Coline Konstancja who is also Erik Rainard's girlfriend, the Winter Olympics' Skating Sisters Rebekka and Alania Reinhilde, and many others. Many of the athletes present today also participated in the 2011 VI Winter Olympics held in Ashton, Krytenia.

The female athletes are wearing the kimsari, a cross between the kimono and sari. The kimsari is a traditional dress of Vulshain, historically worn by women of all races. Their kimsaris are decorated in both the Olympic Rings along with the national seal of Vulshain, and are in the colors of blue, gold, and white: the national colors of the Confederacy of Vulshain. The men wore dark blue jackets and gold pants with white stripes down the sides. However, the various fur patterns and markings of the lobo and vulpine athletes created a dazzling array which awed spectators and viewers around the world.

As the camera focuses on the athletes as they marched behind the large Virabi delegation, a few Vulshainian athletes hold up posters written with various messages, such as 'Hi Mom and Dad!" or 'Vulshain For the Gold!', written in Unonian, Lobonese, English, or Russian.

King Rainard wished the athletes and his little brother good luck in the 2011 VI Summer Olympics.

Many are hoping that Vulshain wins many medals this time around. Vulshain won two medals in the 2011 VI Winter Olympics. This time, Vulshain has 319 entries in these games. Many athletes are taking part in various events. Many expect Vulshain to win medals in gymnastics, swimming, diving, fencing, athletics, and wrestling. Although, you can be sure there will be surprises in other events where Vulshain will reach for the gold.

This is Yermolai Vadimaron for VCNMN reporting live from Lasft, Cafundeu. Tomorrow, the games really start when those who are participating in these wonderful games face off. Good luck out there everyone!

"SAUGEAIS"

The small delegation from Saugeais entered into the Obelisco Monumental stadium to a warm reception. The 42 athletes walked along the track, led by star tennis player Stefan Baptiste as the flag bearer, waving and filming the event with their personal video recorders. The ceremony continued to great success and all the athletes couldn't wait to begin their events in the coming days.
____________________________________________________________

The football team has been preparing for their matches for the past week since landing in Cafundéu, not knowing who their opponents will be. But manager Harrison Pinchot feels that his players will be ready to take on that challenge. "You know, the Olympics can be a daunting stage for players to participate on, especially if you are young. I feel that we have competed at enough events in the past that these players can quell the fear and anxiety an untrained athlete would face." Striker Marcel Eichel has echoed the statements by manager Pinchot, stating, "We have some of the utmost mental preparation, having trained with each other for the better part of the past year. We are competent in formation and confident in our ability."

Other opening rounds that will begin tomorrow are the preliminary rounds of tennis for both the men's and women's side. Stefan Baptiste is the clear cut favorite for the men's side and Émilie Burgundy the strongest competitor for the women. Stefan, who has won a fair number of tournaments along the Saugeais Tennis Tour, has commented about how the setting and competitive nature in the Olympics is nothing he's ever come across while back in Saugeais. "You can definitely feel the pressure here, it's a different kind of feeling than what I normally face on the STT. I've been talking to the rest of our tennis contingency, and they all agree that this will be some of the toughest competition we will ever face, so we must be prepared for it."

Finally, for the Saugeais delegation that is competing tomorrow, is the Men's 10m air pistol at the Cafundéu shooting range. Jean Mercer and Andrew Sax will be the participants sent by Saugeais to compete. Mercer, who currently serves on the police force, is by and large the favorite between the two competitors, and is using his training in small arms as the basis for his air pistol training for the Olympics. "Well, I first had to get used to the difference in weight," said Mercer. "But once I stopped overcompensating during the practice runs, I've been hitting around 540 out of 600 points routinely." Hopefully, he will continue to have success during the time of the competition.

Akbarabad return to the Olympics with high hopes.

(Akbarabad Press, AP): After a deeply disappointing turn at the Winter Games, Akbarabad returns to the Summer Olympics with heightened expectations. With Quintessence of Dust being absent from the games this time, it seems that the team has a real chance of topping the medal table, a long cherished sporting goal. With the Quodite teams absence, Kelssek and hosts Cafundéu are likely to be our biggest threats throughout the competition.

Only minor changes have been made to the Akbarabadi delegation from the last Games in Outineau. In fact we will see a lot of medal hopefuls in the first day of the games. Just a sample:

Judo- Najmul Bari and Maisha Syed will both be in contention in their respective events. Neither won a medal last time around in what turned out to be a very disappointing performance from all our judokas. However, with the Quodite cheaters not participating this time around, they will have a much better chance.

Shooting- Salim and Farihah Akbar are the seeds and Farihah in particular will be under heavy pressure as no Akbarabadi women has yet won a medal in a shooting event. Hopefully Salim will not only be able to defend his Olympic record in Men's 10m air rifle, but will also be able to pick up a medal in the Pistol even as well.

Fencing- Only a preliminary round in the first day but both Rumana Parveen and Mehnaz Alam are serious contenders for the gold medal for Women's Foil. In fact , the two contested the final against each other the last time around with Parveen ultimately prevailing, and they will surely start of as hot favourites. An identical result this time around would do nicely.

Also in action will be our swim team with preliminary heats for both Men and Women's events. With competiton in this sport being so high, we will pretty much be satisfied with an improvement over our two gold and two silver haul in Outineau.

Usubaki National TV Presents:
Heroes of Tomorrow the Olympic Cadre of Usubaki.

"Here is Helio Jusangine and welcome to our special cover of the Olympics in Lasft,Cafundeu.
Today we have an eye on Temur Josales.Josales, the heaviest, but not the tallest man of our Olympic cadre,is a powerful Greco-Roman Wrestler, who dominated in National Tournaments and bypassed everyone else on the tryouts."

"Born and raised up in Usuhaichine, the Cuban-Usubakeene Greco-Roman Wrestler is Usubakis
finest talent,as he also has started a career in mixed martial arts.
Having only two Pro-fights,something he calls testing the waters,he dominated both in quick and stunning fashion,as the Olympian manhandled both his enemys with blinding speed and good boxing.Temur, boxing since he´s eight, always trained both in wrestling and boxing. We will see him
after the Olympics back in MMA,where he feels quite comfortable.A life like that comes always with sacrifieces,as the hulking Olympian describes in our Interview with him."

"Hello Temur,I see your in good shape, manhandling your training partners ?"

(laughs)"Yes,I feel better than ever before.A dream comes true here, and I finally got to show the world my abilities.I will not fail to impress the people, from here to Usubaki."

"So how do you feel about this country ?"

"Cafundeu ?Its a nice place, even though everything comes at a price. The other day I walked on a sideline and got fined for not paying walking on it.Just unbelievable."

"Tell me a little bit more about your early life.Since you was a kid,you were always training.
How do you remember your days as a kid."

"Since I was a kid I lived like a warrior.I always liked Wrestling,I was the best in state.
The problem was,I only got to see my parents 5 times a year. Its hard man."

"How do you feel about hailing from an Usubakeene-Cuban background ?Do you feel more like representing Cuba or Usubaki ?"

"Well,Cuba and Usubaki are very similar to each other.I feel like I am home in both countries.
I was raised up and born in Usubaki,so naturally I will present Usubaki in the Olympics."

"Thank you Temur for your time.It was a pleasure to meet you.Do you want to say something
to the publicum in Usubaki."

"All the big fighters out there, please,I am here.
Thank you for the Interview, the pleasure is on my side."

"Since we only know the warrior Temur Josales, its time to move to his home in Usuhaichine in
Northeastern Usubaki. There we met Mr.Josales,Temurs dad and first ever trainer.
Heres his interview."

"Hello Mr.Josales.How do you feel today ?"

"Hello Mr.Jusangine,I am fine,how about you ?"

"Well,I am fine too, thanks for your caring.
Your son is part of the first ever Usubakeene Olympic Cadre. What are your feelings about this ?"

"I am so proud of him.I knew,if Usubaki would ever compete at the Olympics,Temur would be the first called to the tryouts."

"You too was an very good athlete.Tell us something about your complishments."

"Well,I was National Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion of Usubaki, won the Usubakeene Amateur Boxing Nationals.
I was never able to compete as an part of the Olympic Cadre, since Usubaki never took part.
Back then Usubaki was socialist and communist."

"Yes,we all remember. You trained Temur since he was eight, how do you saw him changing ?"

"He was always a nice kid.The training restricted him from doing dumb things.I have to admit,
I took him chances too.He never had an girlfriend,he never was out partying. He only knows training and competing.Well,he is an premiere athlete,so everything comes at a price."

"Thanks Mr.Josales for your time, its always nice to meet you."

"Thank you Mr.Jusangine, its always nice to meet you.It was an honour to be on your show."

"As you can see,Temur stems from an Family of Warriors. We also did an Interview on his biggest interests, which you can see now."

"Temur Josales, what is your absolutly favourite food ?"

"I outright just love turkey with curd.Tasty and healthy."

"Your favourite music ?"

"I like rap,but most I like christian chants. It sounds weird, but if you are an devout follower of god like me,you will appreciate this music too."

"Favourite Movie ?"

"Gladiator gets me everytime."

"Favourite Series ?"

"The only thing I constantly watch is The Simpsons."

"Your Rolemodels ?"

"Alexander Karelin and Yuriokis Gamboa."

"Your favourite Joke ?"

"Comes a horse in a bar, asks the barkeeper:Why do you make such a long face ?"(Laughs).

"Thank you for your time."

"Yes,thank you too."

"As you can see,Temur Josales is a interesting Person, not only a great Athlete.
He also has a darker side, which he describes in the following story."

"When I was 14 I saw a old Woman in my Hometown getting beat up.She laid on the ground and the attackers just kicked her.Over and over they just dont stopped. So I rushed them, threw the first one to the ground.I beat him to a pulp. The others run away."

"Temur Josales is reported to have big anger issues. In training he always brings it and is calm, but
in the rest of life he attacked civil persons on little issues.Still,Temur Josales is a national heroe and a inspiration to the whole country."

(AND SOME THIRST-QUENCHING GUARANÁ MUQUIRANA!)
Image

A jaunty but exceptionally annoying theme song plays, wherein the phrase 'Grilled Brie for 3' is simply sung over and over again, ad infinitum. Following a series of terrible CGI special effects, which display a drawing of the globe slamming into the flag of Kagdazka and Pazhujebu, causing a massive explosion, the camera jerkily pans to the two slightly-irritated-and-very-tired-looking hosts of the show, Fušia Oujadda and Peregrina Thašighi. Today they are sitting on bunks in the dormitory for the Federation's women's football team. It appears to be quite late, as several women are already in their beds and are snoring lightly in the background. There is only one small lamp on.

YOUR HOSTS:

<-- Fušia Oujadda
Peregrina Thašighi -->

TODAY'S GUEST:

Natasha Klossovskaya

Fušia: All right, one of us has to take a sip of this Guaraná Muquirana for sponsorship.

Peregrina: It's, like, one in the morning! And that stuff could keep you from falling asleep if you were on valium!

Fušia: I know.

Peregrina: Not it.

Fušia: Also not it.

Peregrina: Okay, I guess that means you have to drink it, rookie.

Out-of-Frame Voice: Huh?

Fušia: Mmmmmmm! As professional athletes, Peregrina and I are very serious about making sure our teammates are prime to perform 24 hours a day.

Peregrina: That's right, Fušia. There's never a bad time of day, or night, to feel the thirst-quenching power of Guaraná Muquirana running through your, like, veins.

Fušia: And that's why tonight we're making sure our dear friend and women's national team comrade Natasha Klossovskaya, who is also the guest on Grilled Brie for 3 this evening, is prepared for our first match tomorrow.

The camera pans out, revealing a wiry young woman with long blonde hair and big, enthusiastic light brown eyes.

Peregrina: What's up, Natasha?

Fušia: Ready to get pumped up, Natasha?

Natasha: Uh... I guess.

Peregrina: All right, here you go. See, look, I'll even, like, pop this can open for you.

Natasha takes a timid sip of the highly caffeinated beverage.

Fušia: No, no, no. The sponsors aren't going to go for that. Chug it.

Peregrina: Chug it, rookie!

Natasha: No way.

Fušia and Peregrina (together): CHUG IT, CHUG IT, CHUG IT, CHUG IT!

Natasha: All right, all right.

By the time she has downed the can of Guaraná Muquirana, Natasha is already visibly jittery, and for the rest of the show she undergoes periodic eye-twitching.

Fušia: Awesome. Now that we've woken up half the team, let's continue with the show. Natasha, how do you think the game is going to go tomorrow?

Pause.

Fušia: Natasha?

Natasha suddenly shivers violently, evidently reacting to having just been forced to drink an entire can of sugary soft drink in one go.

Natasha: Sorry. Ahem. What was that?

Peregrina: We were asking you how you thought the game was going to go tomorrow.

Natasha: Good, hopefully.

Pause.

Fušia: Well, that was razor-sharp analysis. Maybe we can have you elaborate a little bit on 'good, hopefully?'

Natasha: You mean, like, our opponents? Cuz I'm pretty sure none of us know yet...

Peregrina: No, no, no. Of course not. Although it is super annoying not knowing who we're playing tomorrow, I mean, how am I supposed to decide how to do my makeup? I always try to use shades that will clash really bad with the colors of my opponents' kit. But this is a crapshoot! I mean...

Fušia: Christ, you would think she's the one who just chugged the Guaraná Muquirana if you didn't know better. Natasha, how about you talk about the starting lineup the women's national team will be fielding tomorrow? It's already been announced by coach Lyakhova, so you don't have to worry about getting in trouble.

Natasha: Okay, well... we're going to come out in a 4-1-2-1-2, or diamond 4-4-2... whatever you want to call it. Zubeida Ichuvihaja is going to be the goalkeeper, and she's going to be the captain too. And then there's a line of four in front of her... that'll be me at right back, then Aqhorassia Bhara and Pirdassia Bawuah as the center backs, and finally Kalidindi Ghei is our left back.

Peregrina: Do you think Aqhorassia and Pirdassia will, like, get along? They aren't really best friends off the pitch, since Aqhorassia plays for Urajbina and Pirdassia used to play for Juvapanam, and everyone from the Federation knows that Juvapanam and Urajbina, as cities, sort of hate each other.

Natasha: True, but I think they'll be fine. I've been playing next to them in training and they seem to be co-operating well so far.

Fušia: Okay, so how about the rest of the lineup?

Natasha: Well, then in the midfield we have Nina Dubnikova at defensive mid, Macrina Mana at right mid, Peregrina here at left mid, and Bhadrabhussana Šekar at attacking mid.

Fušia: Three questions. First, Macrina is a player a lot of people are talking about since she was a crucial player in Šah ZL's recent promotion to the First Division. How important do you think she's going to be for us? Second, Bhadrabhussana's managed to get herself a reputation as one of the few attacking midfielders in the world with a penchant for red cards... do you think she'll hold it together? And third, which would be more useful, having Peregrina here on the pitch, or putting makeup on a flightless mallard duck and having it wander around the pitch aimlessly?

Peregrina: Screw you.

Fušia: Hey, I'm just asking the question, not answering it.

Natasha: Uh, well... I guess Macrina is one of the older girls in the starting lineup, so obviously she's going to kind of be a leader out there. And, you know... hopefully she'll be a figure we can all look up to, both in terms of play and in terms of attitude. Then... I'm thinking Bhadrabhussana will be fine. She knows this is a big occasion, and she knows there's a lot at stake... I don't think she'll do anything too rash. And third... uh... I guess I'd rather have Peregrina.

Fušia: I would too. But it is fun to think about, isn't it?

Natasha: And, anyway, then the strikers are you and Anastasia Khorkuleva! And before you ask, I think you girls will be the best strike tandem in this Olympic tournament. The women's side, at least.

Fušia: Aw, thanks, Natasha.

Peregrina: Suck-up.

Fušia: Hey, maybe if you spent less time blowing kisses at Emperor Raúl you'd have more time to be a good player. Then Natasha would give you a better review and you wouldn't have to be so jealous.

Peregrina: How about you, like, shave that nasty purple fur off your head and see a consultant about a facelift?

Fušia punches Peregrina really hard in the arm. Peregrina's about to punch back before Natasha (to her credit, being only an eighteen-year-old rookie) wedges her way in between them and breaks it up.

Natasha: All right, ladies, cool down. Next question.

Peregrina: Why don't you tell us a little about yourself? How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do for fun?

Natasha: Well, my name is Natasha Klossovskaya... I'm eighteen years old... I grew up in Chadan, which is in western Kagdazka in the CMZ area... and I'm a right back for FKM.

Fušia: Natasha is, we should add, one of the more promising talents in Federation football right now, not just in the women's game, but in both genders. You were really a standout for FKM's underrated defense in last year's First Division.

Natasha: Thanks.

Peregrina: Apparently there's talk of a big takeover that's currently in process at FKM. Astograthian tourism magnate Ordol Urkiza is apparently on the verge of acquiring a majority share in the People's Club. How do you feel this development will affect your club, and second of all, like, how will it affect you?

Natasha: Um, well... I think it will be good for the club, if it happens. Obviously it's still in the early stages, this takeover, and so I can't talk too much about it. But it's looking like we're going to have a bunch of international talent come in because of it, and that can only be a good thing for the club. I can also announce that a very high-profile new manager has been acquired by FKM, but I'm not supposed to say who.

Peregrina: Oooh, a secret!! I love secrets!! You can tell me, I'll keep it!!

Out of Peregrina's eyesight, Fušia violently slashes her hand in front of her own neck, trying to communicate to Natasha that revealing any sensitive information is a bad idea.

Natasha: I... um... probably shouldn't say.

Peregrina: Is Fušia waving signals at you from behind my back?

Natasha: Uhh... no.

Peregrina once again turns on Fušia.

Peregrina: God, you are such a whore!

Fušia: Well, if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is. I mean, considering the number of bananas that have been in your mouth over the years...

Peregrina furiously shoves Fušia. Fušia tries to catch her balance by falling back on a railing, but apparently the Kagdazka and Pazhujebu NOC didn't pay all of the requisite fees/taxes to the Cafundelense authorities in order to receive fully-installed bunk railings, and so Fušia falls a good six or seven feet to the hardwood floor, landing on her right knee awkwardly. The entire squad are all immediately rattled out of bed by the commotion of Fušia yelling in pain while still trying to assault Peregrina. Someone turns off the camera as the entire squad runs over to check on the squad's best player...

The Kytlerians entered a little later than the fans may have expected. "Why did Landau Institute come after Krytenia?" was the cry from too many households, ignoring how the NBO commentators kept mentioning that the nations beginning with "The" were all lumped together, so The Kytler Peninsulae came after The Kiaser Colonies.

This was a large delegation, several hundred in number once you include all the team sport athletes - led out by the hugely symbolic (and relatively huge) presence of Rewa Lapasa, the aboriginal female weightlifter who carried the flag with striking ease. While the armchair fans in other countries might have sniggered at "the odd blue bit on the flag" and "the stupid colour fading", they cannot have failed to notice that this was an impressive collection of athletes in terms of numbers. These weren't no-hopers, either - well, maybe some of them were, but there are genuine medal contenders in this team.

We'd been led to believe this was a country where money talks. We were wrong. This is a country where money screams. Some countries have income tax. Cafundeu seemingly taxes everything but income. They've made a killing taxing every commentator who refers to the nation of Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuk as "the Abdians", for sure - total revenue collected so far from this tax alone is believed to be almost V$110,000 (approximately Tk350,000). Why they tax that when even the nation themselves have accepted this is beyond me and anyone else outside of this country.

Still, one has to admire the show - no expense was spared on it, apart from maybe on the stand-up comedian who was obviously there for the host nation's enjoyment and not anyone else's, and indeed the Olympic flame was the most impressive ever seen. That is, until it was realised that it was actually burning out of control, causing chaos for a few moments until a small part of the flame was extinguished, keeping the rest of it - and the Games - going. Some of the performers seemed to genuinely serve as parodies of the country's all-consuming capitalist culture = at least, that's the best explanation of Erik Stock Market, the bewildered-looking seventy-something rock singer. Satirists will also have a field day - if they can afford to - with the shots of fans waving bank notes at the athletes of the host nation as they entered at the end of the opening ceremony.

The first day's action will see medals awarded in the lightest weight categories in judo and weightlifting; the Kytlerians lack an entry in the former, but Jennifer Pargrew is a hot contender in the women's 48kg weightlifting, and there are also Kytlerian hopes in the women's 53kg and men's 56kg categories with Jarrah Toleafoa and Tomas Walsh respectively. Murman Memmersheim, the country's leading swimmer, is also in action in his favourite event, the 400m individual medley, and the volleyball competitions get under way, with both Kytlerian teams - men and women - expected to reach the latter stages. Finally, the archery competition starts with the initial ranking round - look out in particular for female archers Alice Sandon and Moina Cooper.

"We are reporting here out of our studio in Lasft,Cafundeu.Due to technical problems,we where not able to show you the opening ceremony live.It happened yesterday, and I am sincerly apologizing to you,our publicum."

"Beautiful sight."

"Yes.Indeed."

"It gave some problems beforehand, but they were solved quick."

"Here we see the local star Erick Stock Market while he performs on stage.Reaching the age of 80,this man nows no stop.Probably because he needs the money."

"Oh and there is international superstar Alana Borghi, nice to look at,but my ears are screaming pain."

"At least the comedian was good.Since he has spoken in portuguese, the Usubakeene team had their fair share of laughing."

"The Olympic fire was a other beautiful sight."

"Yes.Indeed."

"Oh,and Cristiana.Alana sure is not as lovely as you."

"Helio,not infront of the cameras....."

"We will see you soon my appreciated publicum."

Khabarovsk Krai arrive for Maiden Olympics

After flights totalling just under 16 hours, the Khabarovsk Krai Olympic squad touched down in Cafundeu yesterday evening, just in time for the opening ceremony. Representing Khabarovsk Krai will be nearly 500 athletes across a ride variety of disciplines. Hopes are high around Khabarovsk Krai that medals could be won of any colour and with that in mind, we have compiled a list of Khabrovsk Krai's best hopes on Day One.

Badminton:
In Badminton we have the Men's/Women's first round featuring 6 athletes from Khabarovsk Krai. Perhaps the best chance of medals later on for the Men would lie with Jonathan Plante, the Number 2 ranked player in Khabarovsk Krai. With the Women our best hope would probably be Gabrielle Dexter who had impressive finishes in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournaments.

Football - Men's: Naturally football has to listed as one of Khabarovsk Krai's medal hopes because lets face it, as a nation we are football mad. The Men's team looks to be stronger than the Womens based on their world ranking of 90. It may be a longshot but we can always hope can't we? With a bit of luck and strikers Eppo Snepvangers and Abdennour van der Moolen on form, results could start to fall Khabarovsk Krai's way.

Handball - Women's: Handball is a relitavely unknown sport in Khabarovsk Krai but we are reliably informed that the womens team is actually very good and has some very good pre-tournament results. Apolonia van der Borg, the coach, is leading a strong team comprised of all the top players in Khabrovsk Krai. RW Loura van Schagen and CB Roosje Rutgers are the most well known of the team being the captains of Khabarovsk Krai's top 2 rival clubs but they will need to put these differences aside if they are to push for a medal.

Judo - Women's 48kg: A medal will definately be decided in this event and our entrant is the veteran 2 time National Championship winner Lilian Cronin. She has a great chance of a mdeal but we can tell you that she has be hampered in training the last week by a nagging achilles heel injury which could impact on her performance. However as we all know, Judo is a notoriously capricious sport so anything could end up happening.

Swimming - Men's 100m Breaststroke heats: Torbn Maguire has been swimming well this year so we feel he has a chance to qualify from the heats. Swimming though is extremely competitive which means there will be lots of athletes entering these events lessening the chances of our athletes qualifying.

Swimming - Women's 100m Butterfly heats: Alicia Patrick is in a similar situation to Torbn Maguire in that she swum well at the National Trials but the queston is will that translate to a good performance at the elite level of competition that she will find at the Olympics. She will have to swim her heart out if she wishes to progress past the heats.

Tennis - Men's/Women's Individual: Tennis in Khabarovsk Krai is mainly a summer sport but it does have a Pro-Circuit that has produced some very fine tennis players over the years. With the men we have Nicholas Blake who is probably the strongest out of the four men entered. He has a good forehand and serve but his backhand needs a bit of work and his tendencies to get frustrated means his play is often erratic and lacking focus. Josefine Wisniewski is the real medal hope for the Women. She is the Number 1 ranked female player in singles in Khabrovsk Krai and displays strengh in all areas of the game with her booming forehand the bane of many opponents. Her only weakness is her tendency to be drawn into a baseline battle which means that she can sometimes be caught lacking when opponents mix it up by adding drop shots and lobs in the equation.

That concludes our Olympic preview for Day One. We'll be back tommorrow with an update on how things went and of course previews for the next day of competition.

Gilchrist, Carpentier back Ventoso over remarks

Lasft, CAFUNDÉU— Liventian cyclists Jimmy Gilchrist and Julien Carpentier have today spoken out against the refusal of the Lasft Olympic Organising Committee to grant the individual pursuit, points race and madison events demonstration status, echoing similar remarks by the head of Sorthern Cycling Fran Ventoso.

Gilchrist, who is the reigning Olympic road time trial champion and a road racer but took part in the individual pursuit at the Fourth Summer Olympics in Aeropag, slammed the decision as "a slap in the face" to "real" cycling fans. "The individual pursuit is one of the most exciting track events and it's an absolute shame the organisers refused to put it on. Cycling fans paid good money to come to Cafundéu and this is not how we should be treating our fans." In place of these three events, the organising committee has included the omnium as a medal event. Carpentier, who is entered in the omnium but has taken part in all three scrapped events at previous Olympics, said he had "very mixed emotions".

"I am happy to be competing at another Olympics because that's the best level you can compete at as an athlete, but I am very disappointed not to be able to take part in my favoured events," he said. Asked to comment on Ventoso's reported remarks slamming the decision not to include the events as a demonstration while golf, poker and billiards were included, Carpentier said he "agreed wholeheartedly" and found the whole issue "very disturbing for cycling's future in the Olympics."

Liventia's chef-de-mission, the Liventia Table Tennis Federation president Shinji Murakami, declined to take action against the two cyclists, saying the Liventia Olympic Association's view was similar to that of the athletes and that it would be hypocritical to sanction the two.

Speaking to the Broadcasting Corporation of Liventia, Mr Murakami added that as the two were major medal contenders, "they are seen as very well-informed about what goes on in their sport and their viewpoints are generally respected."

On the first day of competition at the Games, medals are being awarded in seven events. Liventia has strong opening day medal hopes, with two judo events — the men's 60 kg and the women's 48 kg — first up. At the Fifth Summer Olympics, Joshua Taylor and Anna Green both won bronze medals in their respective events and are expected to do similarly well. Pearline Jones, a gold medallist in the 25-metre pistol class in Outineau, is also a strong gold medal contender in the women's shooting 10-metre air rifle event; flagbearer and Olympic record holder Clementine Plante will look to defend her gold medal in the women's 48 kg category in weightlifting; while teammate Isaac Audy, another defending Olympic champion, will also take to the stage in the men's 56 kg category.

Mr Murakami said that the team's medal target at these Olympics were for at least 15 gold medals and a total of at least 30 medals, after the Independent Athletes returned from Outineau with 26 medals (12 gold) last time out.

THE DAILY KERNANSQUILLECAN

AMAZING!
This is how best to describe the opening ceremony in Lasft last night. Special singers, fantastic fireworks, delightful dancers, and a comedian who we couldn't understand but who made us laugh anyway.
Image
Team Kernansquillec parading around the Obelisco Monumental

Team Kernansquillec paraded around the stadium with Kayleigh Mellor and Madeleine Kay leading the team out into the Obelisco Monumental. It was a sight that the Kernansquillecan Olympic Commitee has been working towards for many years, and it was a proud moment for Kernansquillec to finaly see their team at the Olympics.

But this was just the fun part as today the real actions kicks off. They'll be fencing, football, rugby, basketball, swimming, tennis, handball, and 7 gold medals up for grabs.

All the action is live on the KBC and we'll bring you all the details in tommorow's edition of The Daily Kernansquillecan.

THE FLAG-BEARERS: AN INTERVIEW
Our celebrity correspondant, Julia Fabily, got a moment to chat with flag bearers Kayleigh Mellor and Madeleine Kay before the opening ceremony:
Image
Madeleine and Kayleigh at the
pre-Olympic party in Kernansquillec

JF: So girls, your first Olmypics and you've been chosen to lead the team, how did you feel when you were told you'd be the flag-bearers?

KM: It was just so great! We've already had a bit of international competition experiance at the Water World Championships but we never expected to be given such an honor. I mean leading the team at our first Olympics is such a big thing for us.

JF: At the WWC you both did extremly well in the Slalom winning two gold medals. Do you think you could now top it off with an Olympic gold?

MK: We certainly hope so, but the Olympics will be much more harder to win since there are many, many more athletes than at the WWC and every single one of them is in it to win it. A medal of any color would be nice, but a gold would just be unbelievable!

JF: I've heard you are both into partying a lot. Do you have any plans for after the Olympics?

KM: Yeah sure, I think we're bound to celebrate a bit afterwas.

MK: Especialy if we win something.

JF: Good on you girls, I might come and join you. You've both been very close to each other from what I understand.

MK: Yes we've known each other since we were little babies. We're almost like twin sisters.

JF: Does you close bond make it easier in the C-2?

KM: Well it can, but sometimes it can be a tad akward, but most of the time it is quite a bit easier to work toghter, and we always know how the other is going to do thing so it does help us quite a bit.

JF: Thanks a lot girls, and I wish you the best of luck for the races.

TEAMS STILL TO BE ANNONCED BY OLYMPIC COMMITEE
There is still some mistery over who will be representing Kernansquillec in the team events in sports like football and basketball. Some stars were spotted at the opening ceremony like Kimmo Suutari-Jääskö, the young footballer, or Alice Cameron, captain of the fancied women's Water Polo team, but the KOC said that most of the team members didn't attend as they were in action the next morning.

The KOC also annonced due to technical delays the teams had yet to be released on their website, but most of them were expected to be put online later today just as the action kicks off.

THE SCHEDUAL: DAY ONE

So day One is finaly here. The KBC will be showing live all the events on many of it's channels for most of the day. Many Kernansquillecans will play in qualifing rounds, but some will also have the chance to get an early medal for Kernansquillec. FOOTBALL: WOMEN REACH QUARTER FINALS IN STYLE

The Olympics aren't the only event on at the moment. The Women's World Cup is also in full swing and the women's team won in style in their first round game against Libre Borinquen at Delaclava's Aidan Levy Memorial Sadium in Catherina.

Over 25,000 Kernansquillecan made the trip over to see the game and many more saw the game on TV. In the end it ended up being a 5-1 victory for Kernansquillec.

Ludovica Mazzi named an unchanged side with goalkeeper Patience Caron, Calandre Brunault, Summer Field, Virginia Schiavone, captain Lara Fox, Tiziana Padovano, Yasmin Pearce, Faith Francis, Domenica Colombo, Eleanor Hilton and top scorer Nicole Sharp starting.

The game was started at a competitive rate with both sides going close. Nicole Terresa went even closer for Libre Borinquen as she sent a header on to the Kernansquillecan cross bar. It was a chance Libre Borinquen would regret they didn't score as Kernansquillec's midfield launched a counter-attack and a long run from one end of the pitch to the other by 19 year old Pearce gave the Green Girls the chance they needed as Hilton headed in the cross.

The Kers started to get more and more of the ball and a curling effort from the creator of the first goal gave the Green and Whites a two goal lead, the effort too good for Maria Fernando.

Half time then arrived and a single change was made to the Kers, Chabot on for Padovano on the right wing. The young winger was playing well creating some good chances, but the next goal was against Kernansquillec as Aurea Gonzales sent a mesmorizing shot from 25 yards out into the goal, past Caron who was unable to do anything about it.

At 2-1 it was perilous but top scorer Sharp soon calmed the nerves of her team-mates and of the fans as she tapped in from 5 yards after an other great run from Pearce. Two more subs came on for the Kers, 17 year old Fleur Despins for Calandre Brunault at right back and Luce Alexandre on for Pearce who was very tired after her efforts in the game.

The next goal is surely in contention for goal of the tournament. Faith Francis must have had a lot of faith in her ability as she decided to try and beat the keeper from just inside the opposition's half. The goalkeeper was quite far off her line and she just fired in a perfect shot, going over the keeper who was trying to run back in time, and diping just at the right moment to go into the net.

An absolutly fantastic effort from Francis! And just to round off the match on the 87th minute Nicole Sharp scored her 11th goal of the campaign with a placed shot just inside the 16 yard box.

KERNANSQUILLEC 5 - 1 LIBRE BORINQUEN
Hilton 20' Pearce 34' Sharp 57' 87' Francis 76' - Gonzales 53'

The Green Girls will face their toughest test yet in their quarter final game where they will play The Babbage Islands. Their men's team is the best in the World at the moment and their women's team will provide a hard test for the Kernansquillecans. The game will of course be live on the KBC.

U21WC: U21s WILL BE THERE
The Under 21's will yet again be competing at the Di Bradini Cup also known as the Under 21 World Cup. After reaching succesive quarter finals the team will be looking to go a step furthur. However their coach Chappell Robert is now with the senior team and it is not clear who will be managing them.

There is also a rumour that the team will be composed of both men and women as their is no competition for the women's under 21s. KERFA have not confirmed or denied this. We'll keep you up to date with the situation if anything chances.

Also in the first time in the Di Bradini Cup's history that 40 teams will compete instead of the typical 32. This make it even harder to win, but the Green and Whites will be looking to do just that this time.

OSN Olympic Coverage
in conjunction with BSRN

:: The host, Andrew Patterson, is sat on a plush couch in a studio. The window behind him looks out onto what appears to be the Lasft skyline ::
:: To his right are three guests; Amir Ali, Ron Ocean and Roberto Cormega ::

Andrew Patterson: And so it begins. The sixth summer olympiad is underway, in Lasft, Cafundeu. It's a city, a country in fact, that not many Osarians will be familiar with, although we do have Amir Ali on board -- the former Osarian international fullback played for SC Lasft many moons ago -- along with OCF's premier combat commentator Ron Ocean, and everyone's favourite internet blogger, Roberto Cormega. Hopefully Amir can be a helpful guide as we attempt to pay as little tax as possible here.

Amir Ali: It's not so bad, Andy. The Cafundelense get a rough deal over the taxation, but when you think it through, we're not exactly lenient back home, are we?

AP: Maybe not.

Roberto Cormega: It's not something I'm worried about, to be honest. I'm here for the sports, guys!

AP: And rightly so. Let's get down to business. The opening ceremony was last night, and we saw an interesting choice of flag-bearer in Enzo Corradini. When asked, the ONAC said it was in recognition of his immense contribution to the sporting world in Osarius, and a fitting tribute for an old man.

Ron Ocean: I bet he didn't like that, being called an old man. Enzo is the most sprightly 100 year old you'll ever meet, I assure you. But a great man. Perhaps I'm showing my age here, but I can remember when his sportswear company really took off in the 60s, it was a really big deal. I can't profess to be old enough to have seen him play or even coach, really, and football isn't really my game, but by all accounts, he was incredible. His grand-daughter Sarah is certainly one of the most technically proficient boxers I've seen in a long time, so I can imagine.

RC: He has had an immense influence on the tactical and in some ways physical development of football in Osarius. He pioneered the defensive systems all Osarian sides are tested against today, and for a nation which prides itself on its offensive potency, I think that says a lot.

AP: Amir, did you ever meet Enzo, while you were at Hollybrent? I know he was a major shareholder at one time, and you were team captain briefly, so one would assume...

AA: I met him a few times, yeah. Great man, always giving advice and always appreciative of the effort the team put in. Even when I left for Lasft, he was supportive. Some fans were annoyed, but Sir Enzo defended me on that.

RC: I remember that. He pointed out that we should be proud of you as Osarians, for securing moves to what was at the time, one of the ... three?... biggest leagues in the world?

AA: Yeah I think it was the Candelarians, the PSC and the Primeirona basically dominating the UICA rankings at the time. Not sure what happened to Candelaria And Marquez, though.

AP: Right, well Sir Enzo Corradini carried the flag for Osarius at the opening ceremony, in which we were represented by a group of elite Shiseido practicioners. For those of you who aren't quite aware of what Shiseido is, well... I'll leave that to our expert.

RO: Expert? Haha... Not quite, Andy. But Shiseido is actually the original national sport of Osarius. It's a combat sport, in which any number of people can compete at once, and basically the winner is the last man ... or woman, these days... left standing. The techniques are similar to those found in various styles from overseas, such as Capoeira, which I think might have struck a chord with the locals, and other styles like Wushu, Aikido, and so on.

AP: Now, I'm told by our director that the sport originated from a training method used by tribal Osarian warriors before Edaj the Horrible united the clans.

RO: That's true. Basically, it was used to initiate new warriors, and to test the skills of established warriors. The battles would take place in front of an entire clan sometimes, particularly if being used to decide the new clan head, and would be overseen by a priest or shaman of some sort. His job would also be to heal the loser, in most cases.

RC: I had no idea we had our own combat style. I've never seen it before, not even in OCF.

AA: I was just thinking that. I watch a fair bit of OCF but I've never even heard of Shin.. what was the name again?

RO: Shiseido. Its from the ancient tribal language of one of the southern clans, I think an Ikutursan clan who has managed to traverse to the mainland from Kyoshiku Island. Anyway it means "True Sacred Path". The reason it doesn't feature in OCF events is because the elders of the style opposed its use in a commercial competition. They believe that it would detract from the true purpose of the art, which is effectively preparation for battle, and thus cheapen the heritage of the nation.

AP: But by exhibiting it here, in the Olympic opening ceremony, it can only enrich the nation's heritage. Excellent. That was some very interesting information though, Ron, thank you. Back to the task at hand, I think now... The first day of the Olympics will see a sizeable amount of Osarian athletes compete, including Archery, Basketball, and Tennis... but the main focus for most Osarians is likely to be on the football. The first matchday is crucial, because it could set the tone for the rest of the competition, and with the women's team recalling a few members of their gold medal winning side from four years ago, there will be high hopes.

RC: Perhaps a little unreasonable though, in my opinion. The women's team is strong, but everyone knows it now. They'll be a target. Teams will up their game, so to speak. Particularly when they see Holland and Barca-Carthy in the lineup. Those two are big players. This is all before mentioning the controversy around Elissa Barca-Carthy of late, regarding her dispute with Benedict di Corradi. I'm not going to get involved, but if there is the slightest hint of instability, it could undermine the team's efforts.

AP: And what about the men's team?

RC: I... well its hard to say. They bombed last time, but they have a different man in charge this time around, and youth football in Osarius has seemed stronger lately, even if our DBC form doesn't show it.

AA: I think neither team can be considered favourites for the gold, but either of them has the ability to achieve it. They're not lacking in talent, and the difference maker from four or five years ago, where we as a nation put more emphasis on physical attributes than technical and tactical ones... That's gone now. The average player is smaller, and more technically refined. Tactically the players seem more flexible. It's strange to say, as a former international, who has played in arguably the best league in the world, but... I wish I were fifteen or twenty years younger. Coming up through this system, I'd be a far more talented player, I think.

AP: OK thanks guys... Ron, I know you'll be watching the shooting and archery events keenly.

RO: Definitely. Last time out, the women won the archery, but those guys have all retired since. The Millionaire is back with the men's archery team and is more than capable of outperforming himself, comparing to last time. He's still the number one ranked Archery contender in the OCF after all.

AP: And what about the shooting?

RO: The shooting is harder to break down. We're excellent at some events and terrible at others. I think its pistols we'll struggle with, because we don't really use those back home. Rifles are okay, we've got a bit of tradition there, and we'll do alright. But the guys we have lining up for the pistol event are... not big names in OCF. I think the bigger names steered clear out of fear of ruining their reputations, to be honest.

AP: Alright, well that's all we have time for today. Hopefully we'll have some good news when we return tomorrow. A thank you to my guests Ron Ocean and Amir Ali, who I believe will be sticking around throughout the games to assist in our coverage. From Lasft, I'm Andrew Patterson for OSN...

RC: I'm Roberto Cormega, co-reporting for BSRN

The Herald

Well it is time. The olympics are soon to begin and Kalumba will participate for the first time. While many nations are sending huge teams numbering in the hundreds Kalumba are sending a much more modest team to compete in Archery, a single Swimming event and the demonstration sport of Rugby Sevens. The team will be led by a reporter from this newspaper Wrex Tarr.

Wrex began his work here at The Herald as a war reporter. He often accompanied the Kalumban Light Infantry or the Kalumban Special Air Service on their raids against terrorist incursions, usually engaging in combat himself for which he won a Bronze Cross. He then retired aged 40 to write the Sport columns and also then took up Archery in which he will compete. As a war hero he will bear the flag and captain our team. Like his teammates he doesn't expect to win but simply bring some honour to our nation.

The other sport which we will focus our reporting on is Rugby Sevens. This is a new sport to the Olympics and will see many great teams, like recent winners of the Rugby World Cup Kernansquillec, participate. Kalumba gave a poor showing at the RWC and finished bottom of the group winning just a single game. However the team has improved after a period of intensive training and the players going to the Olympics are the best we have and may create a few surprises.

Rapport d'Olympique Rushmori

LASFT, Cafundéu -- Excitement could not be higher in Civil Citizenry for the Lasft Olympics. Millions tuned in for the opening ceremony last night - a spectacular display of Cafundelense and international acrobatics and whirlwind excitement, and even some jokes, á la São Jorge. Maybe the Citiz will disappointed to learn that they will not find their homeland anywhere on the medal table today: the opening docket only features seven medal events, none of which featuring Citiz athletes. Still, recognizing that in advance, there will be so much great competition around Lasft that it will be tough choosing just what to watch.

The men's and women's singles tennis events will be heavily popular - even the initial rounds today. Aned Hame, coming off the greatest match in world history, looks to contend for a medal, as will the red-hot Pelement Ritarg. Two-time Scott Cup quarterfinalist Chunila Fanara and ITA world number nine Dutinge Emimil will be the top threats on the women's side. The greatest expectations for a gold medal lie on the shoulders of Selleze Amute and Edetal Baniped, the world's number one men's doubles team. Amute, the flag-bearer for the Citiz delegation, and Baniped seek to firmly establish themselves as the world's best with a great run in Lasft.

Both the men's and women's football teams will debut today. It will be the first appearance for the men's team since the end of World Cup qualifying, where the Citiz fell short of Sorthern Northland and Valanora but were pretty successful overall and look to continue recent progression with some top-notch results. The new team roster has not yet been released, but it is expected that there will be some changes from the fifty-sixth World Cup squad - including, likely, the removal of some original national team members from half a decade ago.

There may not be any medals up for grabs, but the day's six swimming events will surely attract attention from Citiz viewers because of the incredible tension and competition inspired by aquatics races. The top male swimmers, Horifopil Nedorkan and Ruyagol Cupaviv, will be around for all of the men's heats; though they hope to reach the final rounds in all of them, neither will have a chance to flaunt their greatest strengths (butterfly for Nedorkan, backstroke for Cupaviv). Both swimmers are generally considered to be good all-around, so it will be interesting to see the results they generate from the men's 400m medley. On the women's side, Sazimoz Alyupan, the undisputed top female swimmer in the country, will see her first action in all three events. Her biggest threat, individually, will be in the 400m medley; but her top contribution will be to her teammates on the freestyle relay team, who will try to qualify for another day of 4x100m freestyle swimming. Alyupan is strongest at freestyle, and will be the anchor for a squad that has a lot to prove but nothing to lose.

ChenkorSport Magazine - The Olympics Coverage

LASFT, CAFUNDÉU - The Sixth Summer Olympics in Cafundéu have officially started! The opening ceremony is just finished, twenty minutes later than expected. The stadium was full, with more than 783 Chenkoryan fans, wearing the colours of their home country. The opening ceremony included some bad performances of Cafundelense singers, for example Erick Stock Market, and the beautiful but young Alana Borghi. There also was a comedian without jokes and some dancers. But then came the best part, the entrance of the participating nations. Kelssek was first up, they hosted the previous Games, preceding the nation of... argh, let's forget about that one. The Chenkoryan delegation walked proud through the stadium, wearing yellow, blue or puprle costumes, and with Blanca Stablum bearing our flag. The COC president spoke some words, because of the drunkenship of the Cafundelense emperor. But how did the Chenkoryan athletes experienced the opening ceremony? We talked to some of them, include Blanca Stablum.

Our reporter Michaël LeBarthèll saw Blanca passing and he immediately asked her some things.
ML: Hello Blanca, can we have a little chat?

BS: Of course we can!

ML: How is it for you to bear Chenkorya's flag at our first Olympics? It must be a great honour!

BS: I can tell you: it is! When I walked their in my purple turkey costume I was feeling so proud. You know, I am just.. well, whatever. It is incredible.

ML: Let's get off the ceremony. Do you think you will stand a chance to win a medal?

BS: *So, you fall with the door in house! That's a question I can't really give an answer to. Of course there is, but there are so much good opponents. A final placing would be great, let alone a medal.
*Chenkoryan proverb: means that you directly say what you want to say.

ML: Let's get off-topic: can you do anything else as training here in Lasft?

BS: Well, only if it's planned like that. We did some nice things here, and in the evening we may go to clubs et cetera but you can only do that if you are allowed to: you have no free time for your own. The COC is very strand. But sorry, I haven't got much time so I have to quit this now. Thank you!

ML: Thank yóu!
