And Straight On 'Til Morning

Postby Bryn Shander » Thu Sep 24, 2009 4:05 pm

Halcyon's first rays peeked over the Misty Mountains and blanketed the countryside before making their way over the city's walls and enveloping the city below. From his office on the southeast corner of the Hermes Building's hundred and forty fourth floor, Paul Jones could see for dozens of miles. Today he was watching the sun come up. He had been in his office since before Halcyon had even turned the eastern sky purple, and was distracted from the stack of resumés on his desk by the light reflecting off of a picture frame and into his eyes. Now that Halcyon had risen a bit and the angle had changed, the light on the frame's glass was no longer blinding and distracting. Now it simply illuminated the thin coating of dust that stuck to the surface and the picture below. It was his wife and three little girls. Mr. Jones glanced back out the window at the silhouetted mountains once more and thought about the last time that he and his family went camping up in their wilderness.

He wasn't being paid to reminisce, however, and soon got back to work. He would be holding interviews within a few hours, and he needed to be familiar with the candidates before they arrived. Most of the resumés were your run of the mill BA in basket weaving at a provincial school kids, but one in particular stood out.

Jay Treven.

According to his resumé, he earned a Master's degree at the Austere Cove Institute in only six years, won his high school's science fair with an electrothermal combustion cannon as a freshman, and helped the police solve a murder case as a junior in college. Probably a bunch of bullshit. Paul thought, but he liked the guy's style. If he could bullshit people half as well in person as he seemed to be capable of doing on paper, he'd have the job.

'Name please?' Asked the stoic security guard from behind an intimidating sheet of bulletproof glass. 'Jay Treven, I'm actually here for an interview today.' He said with a nervous smile. The guard didn't even look up from his clipboard, busy flipping through several pages. 'You're not on the board.' Said the guard, looking at him with cold, soulless eyes. Treven's smile faded. 'That can't be right, I'm actually supposed to be talking to Mr. Jones in about fifteen minutes.' A moment of silence went by between the two men, the pathetic whimpering of his rental car was the only sound that could be heard in the underground street, that they were both in. The guard looked Treven in the eye, not even looking down at the clipboard. 'No, you're not.' Said the guard.

'Uh, I'm pretty sure I am.' Said Treven, his face contorting with confused sadness. The guard sighed and rolled his eyes before looking at the clipboard in depth. 'I, well, I suppose you are...' The guard opened a small slit at the bottom of the window and slipped a guess pass through it, just out of reach of Treven. He unbuckled himself and leaned out the window to grab his identification.

'Thank you very much.' Jay said before driving on towards the underground parking lot. Before long, he found himself in the lobby of the Hermes Hyperspace Travel Corporation. He made sure his I.D. tag was visible on the breast of his navy blue suit. He walked up to the front desk where he waited patiently for several minutes for the receptionist to pay attention to him. She smacked her lips, chewing vigorously on a piece of gum.

'Yeah, what?' She said, not even looking at Jay. 'My name is Jay Treven, I'm here for a intervi-' He said before he was cut-off by the red haired receptionist. 'If you'd like to apply for a job, you'll have to report to the information desk.' She said, clacking away at her keyboard. 'No, I already applied for a job. I'm here for an interview with Mr. Jones, I'm supposed to see him in nine minutes, so I'm in a bit of a rush. How do I find his office?' Jay was starting to feel the pressure now.

'You're not on the list.' She said, still typing away.

'You didn't even check the list!' He said, exasperated.

'Sir, if you don't calm down I'll have to call security.' She said, fixing him with a condescending stare.

'I can see the interview list on your desk, my name is right there. Jay reached over the counter and put his finger right on his name. She looked down, rolled her eyes and said 'I suppose you are. Last elevator on the left, he's in the penthouse.' She brushed his hand aside, pulled a pencil out of her beehive and put a check next to his name. 'Thank you very much.' Treven said venomously as he stormed off.

He looked at his watch with trepidation, the ride to Jones' office was taking forever and he had no clue how tall this building was thanks to Bryn Shander's underground road system. The doors swung open and he was pressed against the back of the elevator by a rush of people who had just started their lunch break. He pushed through just as the doors were closing and managed to get out after some guy spit on his back and called him an asshole. He was in a half run towards Jones' office, wiping away the spit as best he could with a handkerchief. He came to the front door of his office and reached for the handle before he was stopped cold.

'Can I help you, sir?' Came a shrill voice to his left. A dark haired woman with black rimmed glasses sat at a desk, staring at him like he was autistic. 'Oh, I'm Jay Treven, I'm here for an interview with Mr. Jo-'

'You can find an application at the information desk, sir.' She wailed. 'No, God damn it! I'm here for an interview in...' Treven checked his watch 'Less than thirty seconds!' He was sweating and was about to lose it.

'You're not on the li-' She tried to say.

'I'm on the fucking list!' He shouted before walking into Jones' office.

When he entered he saw Mr. Jones in front of the window of his corner office, overlooking the best view of Bryn Shander one could get without being in the shadow of the massive building that was the Hermes Hyperspace Transit Corporation. Jones turned to Treven and eyed him firmly
'Jay Treven?' Asked Jones.

'Yes, sir, it's a pleasure to meet you.' Said Treven, exhaling deeply.

Jones checked his wrist watch. 'You're right on time. You're hired.' Jones said with a plain expression.

'What?'

"Senator," Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum said, "If you think it's that important that we get our Hermes gate set up immediately, then I give you authorization to make the call to the HHTC. As for myself, I have other issues to attend to."

The Senator rolled his eyes. "Since I know that you aren't talking about our problems in the Pokemon Cluster," he said sarcastically, "I can only assume that you have another 'important' social function to attend. Tell me, which wealthy industrialist is wining and dining you tonight?"

Valorum scowled. "I resent," he said acidly, "Your aspersions on my character."

"You can resent the truth all you wish, Chancellor," the Senator replied with undisguised disgust, "As for the call to the HHTC, I do indeed consider it that important." Looking the Supreme Chancellor in the eye, he continued: "So I will take you up on your offer to allow me to do your job for you."

And with that, he turned and left before the outraged Valorum could reply.

The comm console kept buzzing, indicating that the Senator's call had yet not been taken. This was his fifth call, each of the previous four having been ended after ten minutes going unanswered, and the Lego politician fumed silently at his difficulty in getting through. Don't these people ever answer their calls?!?

Then, just as the Senator was about to give up, the call was answered.

"Hermes Hyperspace Transportation Corporation," the bored voice of the operator on the other end of the call said.

"Yes, this is Senator Palpatine of the Federation of Independent Legos..."

"I'm just kidding." replied Mr. Jones as he saw the dumbfounded look on Treven's face. "I'm Paul Jones. I'll be conducting the interview with you today. Please, have a seat."

After Jay had taken the seat on the other side of the desk, Mr. Jones continued. "Mr. Treven, I've read your resumé. Tell me a bit about yourself."

A thousand feet below, the receptionist in the call center was busy talking to a lego.

"Thank you for calling the Hermes Hyperspace Transportation Corporation. My name is Janet. How can I help you today, Senator?"

"The Federation recently joined the Galactic Commonwealth of Planets," Palpatine explained. "I was told that we should contact you directly to arrange for the delivery of a pair of Hermes gates to our capitol, Coruscant."

'Well, I went to school at the Austere Cove Institute, where I earned my masters in logistics technology. After that, I gained employment with the Shenanigans restaurant franchise, I was the head of the transportation department. I did a pretty good job of it, if I don't say so myself. I loved the work, to be honest. When I was a little kid, I played with model trains... I still do, when I have the time. I've always been fascinated with the logistics industry, it sounds boring, I know, but I've always made things run on schedule. When I found out about the opening in the HHTC's shipping headquarters, I jumped on the chance. Shenanigans is a great company, but there's something more profound about the scale on which your company operates. The way it moves goods across the galaxy, to over sixty solar systems and god knows how many worlds. There are many systems like this one, Mr. Jones, but I want to be a part of the best.'

"That's very impressive, Mister Treven." replied Mr. Jones. "I understand that you're applying for the position of assistant manager in the product delivery department. I'll be frank with you, Jay. Your resume and the Shenanigans corporation both speak highly of you, and I like your passion for the industry. I only have one more question for you." he continued.

"When can you start?"

With the resurgence of the Galactic Commonwealth of Planets as a political power in the North, the powers-that-be in the Federation decided that it would be best for the future security and prosperity if they could acquire Hermes Hyperspace Transportation Corporation Gates. To that end, Acting Chancellor O'Shara sent a message to the official HHTC headquarters detailing his request.

To: The Hermes Hyperspace Transportation Corporation;

On behalf of the Galactic Commonwealth of Planets, we at the Bavinese government request that HHTC representatives meet with delegates from the GCP to discuss a new alliance-wide HHTC gate systems, and the exact terms thereof.

At the same conference, the Federation wishes to negotiate the purchase of HHTC gates for the remainder of inhabited Federation Space, as well as the worlds in the Former Kiith Occupation Zone.

These meetings are to be held at the Grand Hotel in New Tellic, on Bavin III.

To: Galactic Commonwealth Member States;

All member-states are hearby invited to send one (1) delegate to a conference on Bavin III to negotiate the acquisition of HHTC gates for civilian and limited military usage.

These meetings are to be held at the Grand Hotel in New Tellic, on Bavin III.

On Bavin III, the Grand Hotel was being prepared for the influx of foreign dignitaries. Acting Chancellor Valler O'Shara would be representing the Federation, since Sito Ri'hard had come down with a flu and O'Shara's office was only a few blocks away anyway. There would be plenty of media attention, no doubt about that, mostly to solidify the perceived broship between Hermes and the Galactic Commonwealth.

HHTC Reply wrote:From the office of George Vantrease

Chancellor O'Shara,

I'm happy to hear that the Galactic Commonwealth has been reformed and wishes to renew its relationship with the HHTC. Unfortunately, due to the distance involved and the political situation within your nation, I cannot agree to a meeting on Bavin III. I would suggest that the meeting be held here in the HHTC headquarters in Bryn Shander.

Sincerely,
George Vantrease
CEO of the Hermes Hyperspace Transportation Corporation

O'Shara sighed when he got the message from Mr. Vantrease. Deep down he knew that Vantrease was probably getting some kind of sick kicks out of forcing hundreds of people to change their plans suddenly. He was about to call Ri'hard and tell him to suck it up and make the journey to Jannath, when he remembered Ja'kin Shari. The original ambassador to the GCP, he had worked with the HHTC before. After a short phone call, Shari decided to go to Jannath, despite his misgivings about missing Finley's funeral.

To: George Vantrease

Despite the distress caused, we would be more then willing to move the meeting to Jannath.
