Before the law and courts of TurtleShroom, females have been equal since the nation's founding. Even if people think their place is at home, that doesn't matter before the law. Gender equality is a high value in the nation's courts. A death sentence on a man is a death sentence for a woman. A job paying three skillets for a male is a job paying three skillets for a female. Period. Although it has never happened, the courts have ruled that a woman could serve as Chancellor if she was named by the previous one and chosen by lot.

However, the religious ties of the government run deep. There are still certain positions a woman is barred from, and not usually by law. For example, the Baptist denomination of Christianity has believed that women can not preach, be a deacon, or lead the sort of worship at a pulpit or alter, but rather, that they can lead side groups like chairing committees, Sunday School, or speak as a guest, lead in a non-church religious organization, or testimony.

There are also certain things women can not do that men can, and vice-versa. Men are forbidden from working in women's lingere stores, and women from working in professional (American) football, to name just one of many. Women are forbidden from going without a shirt top, but men forbidden from wearing women's clothes (if a man is in a skirt in TurtleShroom, it'd better be a culturally approved man-skirt).

In the early 1900s, a local decree ordering women to wear a uniform dress code was struck down in court.

However, there are still infamous decency standards that men and women both have to obey in public.

Shirts that would usually expose large amounts of cleavage require camisoles or some other sort of item of modesty to conceal it. Failure to do so is a petty infraction of a fine, but it doesn't go on a criminal record the first six times.

Men can't wear clothes deemed "too flamboyant", and we all know that no one can streak. The former is a petty infraction of a fine that doesn't book the rulebreaker, the latter is "petty vice" and a sentence of jailtime, usually a week, or a fine, or both. ("Vice" is the term that covers assorted moral crimes, including sodomy or buggery. )

• "Petty", or "fourth-degree vice" includes cross-dressing and flamboyance-in-excess. These are non-booking fines.
• "Third degree vice" are "gay acts" like two adults of the same gender "passionately" holding hands in public, or a female trying to take another female to a prom. These can be infractions or misdemeanors, depending on what, when, and where the "crime" was committed. Sometimes booked.
• "Second degree vice" is buggery and public displays of gay-based effection, such as making out and other forms of romance. Always a misdemeanor, always booked. Jail time is usually three days and/or a small fine.

If this raises the question about inter-religious interaction, then my answer is that everybody in my society is brushed up on all religious texts (they choose only one to follow explicitly, but are allowed to look at other texts and take on board some aspects) so everybody treats each other with respect according to their religion

They are granted equal political rights, and other forms of discrimination exist by their own choice rather than by law.
