Matchday One… One weekend down, thirty-three to go. Not to worry, not long left now!

Certainly not long left for Christopher Harvey, who found himself at the centre of the first big story of the season (so that’s one more than we managed all XXXV, then).

It was all looking so fluffy, as well. The fixture list had not been kind to MarquezOW as they looked to put their disappointing previous season behind them, travelling to Zapata on the opening Saturday morning. Even for the sedate time of day they entered into a raucous atmosphere, with the city in the midst of yet another major protest against the island’s current interim government, that even managed to disrupt the start of the match for half an hour and put TV3’s noses firmly out of joint, which is probably not a great way to encourage Candelarias-wide support for their cause. Whatever that is.

Anyway, while this sort of thing for the GIZ is all so much water off a du… er, that is to say, they’re all really used to it; the visitors could have been forgiven for being a trifle shaken when their coach finally squeezed into the grounds of Marlow Park and the game could get under way. Not a bit of it, though, as the naranja went off like a rocket, looking for the first half an hour like the team who had come so close to taking back the title in XXXIV rather than last term’s flaccid vintage, knocking it about beautifully while the new partnership of O’Brien and Stewart successfully shrugged off a few Vanorian breakaways on offer. With aging full-back Paul “Peter Waterson” Paterson (it’s amazing what a luxurious false moustache and shades can do) terrorised by Oliveira Tavares, a goal was inevitable and Lúis Sáez finally broke past Ciaran Stockley with a firm effort on twenty-six.

Another crisp move almost ended in a second a couple of minutes later, and it was completely against the run of play when that infamous Sterogan Campbell Raviranjan spotted Durosa drifting into the opposition box and launched a perfect long ball for her to sneak past Cotuba and provide the finish.

And then it all went really, really wrong for Marquez-Onwere. By half-time they were three-one down, and deservedly too, looking like an entirely different team during ten spectacularly awful minutes. Green Island should have notched up a cricket score in the second period as well, camped as they were in Amern S’toris’ box with the Yaforite pulling off a series of final saves before young substitute Jameson Aldren firmly put the game to bed. A late goal for each side made little difference to the final result (apart from changing the scoreline… obviously), and it was job done for Green Island as they rushed to the top of the day one table (though given that they were playing first, and all, this wasn’t an incredible achievement).

The naranja would face the lengthier effects, though no-one really expected what was to follow – Harvey’s sensational sacking by owner Ricardo Wendell. Roundly thanked though he was, Harvey shall not go quietly into the night, one feels, while the general mood in Onwere and further afield alike was one of utter bafflement.

Alejandro Blanco da Cruz was announced barely half an hour later as the new manager. He’s a good get, you can’t argue with that – a Globe Cup winner with Sorthern giants Castrograd, he certainly shouldn’t be set to follow in the run of the mill footsteps of countryman Winston Muscat, but he arrives without any time to make the squad his own, and sacking any coach after a single game is, let’s be honest, seriously knob-headed. Wendell’s only a young man himself, and may come to rue this particular folly, but it certainly gives us something to talk about. Bless him.

Elsewhere, the top of the early table has a fairly familiar look already – with Albrecht FC, Tenderville and Caires City all taking pretty comfortable victories over the three top-flight newcomers, while they’re joined by Mayo Valley – whose performance at Port of Clotaire was really quite special. If there was any justice in this world, it’d be Muscat who was collecting his P45 right now, after a typically disastrous opening day.

Turkish failed to start with a win though, going down at Caires Sports, while the Marbles under Barreto for the first time looked a much studier proposition in taking all three points at home to a gently disappointing Portuguese.

Albrecht FC 3-1 Cathedral City (Logan 5, Wanderley 24, Graves 74; Pallotta 32)
Caires Sports 2-1 Albrecht Turkish (Belmore 72 and 76; Alexander 84)
Candelaria-Allemali 1-2 Tenderville United (Silva 59; Kuypers 54, Night 77)
El din Marbles 1-0 Arrigo Portuguese (Erwin Visser 15)
Green Island 5-2 Marquez-Onwere (Durosa 36 and 43, Anwamanë 45, Aldren 80, Kures 87; Sáez 26, Pappas 89)
KT Hotspur 0-0 Gamboa FC
McDonald SC 0-3 Caires City (Marshall 21, Williams 71, Shannon og 83)
NAPPC 0-0 AFC MN Smith
Port of Clotaire 1-4 Mayo Valley (Sánchez García 33; Szatmári 10, Zoric 15, Warren 87, Tillström 90+2)

Matchday Two… Possibly time for a bit of a rethink at Albrecht FC, maybe?

Okay, so strictly speaking their two-one home defeat to Mayo Valley wasn’t actually deserved in any practical sense. The bitter, balding Tory statistician on the Albrecht Herald was quick to stress how Kim Mihyeon and Matthew Logan had been the best players on the pitch by a mile, with a high percentage of their passes either resulting in or preventing goal-scoring opportunities, and the fact that the Han striker appeared to miss a hatful of chances and, indeed, Logan was plainly at fault for both Samuka Szatmári’s well-taken efforts, were just statistical flukes that only an absolute moron would take into account when looking at the overall picture. Albrecht FC still have a 21.93% chance of winning the title, and anyone who says they don’t is a durr-brain.

Torrealba’ll drop ‘em both for next weekend’s match, but what does he know?

To be entirely fair, the Scorpions have had the unusual distraction of the Champions’ Cup, played at this early stage to avoid a clash between the final in Emberton and the Olympics (television… is there anything it won’t ruin?), though in that particular contest they’re thus far doing rather well – and have, on the face of it, a plum draw for the last sixteen against Debbie Nichutin’s Trecelunas (she plays for them. She doesn’t own them, or anything. Except possibly in a colloquial sense). Albrecht are part of a contingent that makes the CMSC the largest force of the knock-out stages, though the last time that happened all three sides flamed out before the quarter-finals, so no poultry shall be tallied unduly. Certainly, City are showing signs of looking somewhat wearisome already – with Anthony Jones, Colin Marshall and Agostinho all rested for their league fixture this weekend, they managed only a point at home to NAPPC. As for Green Island though, they’re still insufferable – the only undefeated side in the TQCC group stage, they rolled aside CandelariaAM on Saturday to remain perched at the top of the table. I’ll be buggered if anyone’s going to catch up with them, frankly.

That, or they’ll break my legs. But if you dance with the devil, and all that.

Of course, the truly major result from the TQCC thus far was Yuba United failing to make it into the knock-out stages. We’ll be sure to light a candle outside the Bedistani community centre in downtown Albrecht and, if there isn’t one, well then we’ll goshdamn build one! From our bare hands! I need thirty sturdy men, good and true, several oxen, and a John Deere 9410 combine! NO, not the noted Jesuit priest and pacifist campaigner! My god, you people are amateurs!

Elsewhere, Blanco de Thingy had a dream of a first match, with the naranja gifted a home tie against McDonald SC and, with Catedral going down by the same one-nil scoreline in Abiodun, it leaves the three promoted sides pointless and taking up the bottom three spaces. Not jolly, but with a bit of luck the close of the SBCC will allow them to return their attention to the league before too long. The Cats and Shining Sons still have a chance of making the final, even if Allemali missed out on hosting rights by the narrowest of margins (well alright, not the narrowest… seven votes, actually, but… hush) and Catedral can expect a… lively welcome, should they end up in San Marquez.

Turkish are off the mark, meanwhile, while Tenderville snaffled bragging rights in the Globe-Cup-failures-grudge-match.

AFC MN Smith 1-2 Port of Clotaire (Postman 90+1; O’Airmeadhaigh 26, Van Dijk 45)
Albrecht FC 1-2 Mayo Valley (Morrison 61; Szatmári 14 and 88)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-0 KT Hotspur (Castro 90+2)
Caires City 0-0 NAPPC
El din Marbles 0-2 Albrecht Turkish (Werner 15, Alexander 25)
Gamboa FC 1-0 Cathedral City (Tollison 31)
Green Island 3-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Young 31, va Drake 41, Aldren 68)
Marquez-Onwere 1-0 McDonald SC (Gatti 51)
Tenderville United 3-2 Caires Sports (Night 11 and 73, K’latris og 44; Sinjinir 32 and 54)

Matchday Three… Just a brief one before we climb back into TQCC action, since I’m currently on my way to Zapata to present Green Island with the league trophy. It’ll be a lengthy trip, and I’ll have to stay in someone’s bedside cabinet for the night until Mc O’Neil’s hounds are called off, but it’ll be worth it. Can spend the Clausura on the beach, that way.

Oh sure, they’ve only had three home games in a row, and MarquezOW and Tenderville are pretty mediocre opposition, right? Never mind Allemali. But when Gamboa FC are second in the table and the only other undefeated side, you know the GIZ’s rivals simply aren’t pulling their weight already. We’re really going to have to engineer a major scandal in a few weeks, or we’ll have nothing else to write about.

Apart from how crap everybody else is, obviously. Witness Caires City, who were brutally dealt with by Port of Clotaire – a superb performance from the Harpies, the kind they should be producing rather more regularly, but City were awful at the back, with George Rosenthal repeatedly outfoxed by Tom van Dijk, and Hindenburg frankly looking all of his thirty…something years up against the PoC front three – none of whom ironically found the target in the three-nil win, though late sub Jamie Hamblett, another striker brought in from the Indies, opened his CMSC1 tally with a late strike.

MN Smith’s haul from XXXVI so far includes two draws – not a shocker, given their most recent Clausura, but holding Albrecht FC to nils each is a valid achievement, don’t you think? Turkish, meanwhile, were kept to a desmond in Rosasharn, and Caires Sports joined the clump of four other sides on six points on Monday with victory over the Marbles.

A costly one, potentially, with ‘keeper Kolukernin limping off early on. The Yaforite was duly ruled out for several weeks with a calf strain (holy they might be, Ahadris, but you don’t keep baby cows in the bath, arright? It was an accident waiting to happen, you’ve only got yourself to blame) and handing untested twenty year-old Adam Green responsibility for… well, sitting in the corner of his net writing poetry while the five in front of him (or ten in front of him, depending on who’s attacking) do all the actual work. It’s a good life, being Caires Sports goalkeeper.

A worst fate was dished out to Bethany Nicholls, who looks set to miss the rest of the Apertura now, prompting Panadero into a bit of a rethink or, at the very least, a mercy mission at Augustus or somewhere, hint hint.

No? Eh, alright. It was worth a go.

They did at least manage a point in the first ‘derby’ of the season, the traditionally dust-up between Catedral and Portuguese which saw zip in the way of goals and plenty of lovely nasty injuries.

Port of Clotaire 3-0 Caires City (Fuentes 12, Van Dijk 77, Hamblett 90+2)

Matchday Four… It’s all about baby steps for the likes of Valaina Tinúviel and Lúthien Anwamanë, who may have been about since forever but really are but infants in certain… complicated, ways. One can say the same about Jhanna Young and Jameson Aldren, who really are just starting out on their careers and have plenty of TQCCs ahead of them. Theirs and Green Island’s progress hasn’t been an entirely steady one, but at least they’ve broken their duck in making the semi-finals after four previous failures, and were as unlucky to be ousted by the Rockers as they were fortunate to sneak past the Neurologists in the previous round.

Still, their smashing four-one victory over the Panthers at Marlow Park will live long in the memory, and there’s still a chance to cheer on William Vaughan now, so everyone’s a happy bunny, ultimately. Now Albrecht FC’s youngsters just have to learn how to put penalties away, and all shall be rosy with the world.

Back to the toil of domesticity, then, and the rather big City versus Scorpions match, a game neither side could have done with. The villain of the piece proved to be young Leo Williams, suffering a bit from the pressure of his second top-flight season and, frankly, looking rather rotund. Dionísio eventually hauled him off in favour of former Albrecht forward Cas Richardson, but by then the damage had been done – Williams had missed several decent half-chances and one open goal, and their first-half, two-goal punishment was too much to overcome. The visitors themselves hardly looked an overwhelming force, and it’s still rather difficult to see where a sustained challenge is going to come from. But hey; they’re Albrecht FC. They’re always there or thereabouts.

Apart from the time a few seasons back when they finished seventh. Um.

Elsewhere, NAPPC were pretty much doomed in their home tie with the Shining Sons after Wais Thwante received his marching orders just three minutes into the game (someone getting sent-off against Candelaria-Allemali… That’s odd), and the one-nil defeat leaves them the only side yet to score this term. And with Daniel González Rodríguez and Ishmael Van Dyke up front, that’s even odder. Something’s gone a bit squiffy in that dressing room over the summer, methinks.

That’ll be Laurens Cassou, if you ask me.

Gamboa meanwhile have yet to let in a goal, which is really all credit to Bartolomeu and Kire Barnett, the latter currently in for the injured Aldo. Some other of this season’s expected fringe players continued to stake their claims for regular starts; with Jarrell Reuberson-Mohammed scoring a long-range beaut in Rosasharn, Jamie Hamblett getting another as a substitute for the below-par Ham Hyi-san, while Bas Smit proved the difference in that self same game with a late header (but of course) to hand Doobrie da Cruz a third straight victory at the MarquezOW helm.

Green Island had to make do without Anwamanë meanwhile, but still never looked remotely troubled against the pointless Dons.

Albrecht Turkish 4-0 Cathedral City (Tashkir 16, Alexander 56, Bakker 79, Robinson 89)

McDonald SC 1-2 Green Island (Munir 68; Aldren 12, Kures 45+1)
NAPPC 0-1 Candelaria-Allemali (Millard 55)

Matchday Five… Alejandro Blanco da Cruz, I tip my hat to you, sir.

There aren’t too many managers who can stick two Globe Cup winners’ medals on their mantelpieces. Indeed, there probably aren’t any. I shall check the Cafundó do Juta situation first.

Brb.

Oh, but of course. Andreas Gilsoweller Veiga and Júlio Vargas held the honour separately after GC2 and GC10. So big Al has indeed made history. Well I never.

It’s a curious business, with Christopher Harvey having taking the club through the eliminatory stages and group victories over Casuals Osteria and Wiechester before being spectacularly given the boot, much to the derision of just about everyone in the Candelariasian press who decided on mass the poor young Ricky Wendell had lost what little snatchette of the plot he had to begin with. Turns out, the young man had a script all of his own, one that the Castrograd boss was only too willing to fulfil. So ta, guys. You’ve made us all look like a right bunch of sillies.

There’s not much more you can say, really – except that the Escalera Naranja, back to its full compliment of stands for the knock-out stages, has already become a proper fortress under the new manager, with the semi-final comeback over the previous term’s defeated TQCC finalists providing arguably one of the best single performances in Marquez-Onwere’s history. Kudos be due to Wildash Gatti and Bas Smit in particular, who look increasingly settled in their roles, which is hardly good news for Souto Maior – a Player of the Season only in XXXIV – and Luís Sáez and all. They’ll be the only ones unhappy with this little campaign though, with Wendell firmly winning over the doubters and MarquezOW becoming the fifth Candelariasian side to lift yewikka silverware, and the first Marquezian one. Suck on it, Marbles and Portuguese! Nyaaah!

And so back to the league, and the rather lengthier bid to add to CMSC1 title to Blanco da Cruz’ growing collection of Stuff. Inevitably a tad wobbly following their excursions all the way over in… um… the nation next door (ahh, the glory days of supposed geophysical isolation, how we miss thee), the naranja’s trip to the capital could and should have been something of a dud. Wasn’t though – instead, both sides gave a pretty good account of themselves, with a considerably improved Albrecht FC holding the rampant visitors to a one-all draw, which was probably about the best they could have hoped for.

Elsewhere – and t’was a sizable elsewhere – NAPPC got off to the first win in (drum roll, pleases…) Zapata.

Oh yes, you didn’t see that coming, did ye? Neither did anyone else, especially Ladordren Dorack when he swivelled daintily on the spot, failed to notice a wayward Van Dyke effort spinning towards him, and neatly headed it past Ciaran Stockley. With Anwamanë still out, Green Island failed entirely to come up with an answer and fell to an unlikely defeat. What fun!

Meanwhile, Turkish are up to second on goal difference with victory in Hodgehill, but suffered a ickle bit of a blow with Ausilio Calabrese stretchered off clutching his left leg. We’ll keep ye updated, naturally, and promise not to giggle.

Gamboa were also unfortunate injury victims, with the early loss of Barnett leaving them with gaping holes at the back, and they were frankly lucky to keep the final score of their match with Caires City down to four-nil. Not a jolly way to concede your first goals of the season…

AFC MN Smith 0-4 Arrigo Portuguese (Tiller og 26, Oughton 26, Randjelovic 68, De Woudt 72)
Albrecht FC 1-1 Marquez-Onwere (Hamizi 39; Oliveira Tavares 19)
Caires Sports 2-2 Cathedral City (Sinjinir 46, Valinial 83; Solaris 8, Delara 29)

Gamboa FC 0-4 Caires City (Mulder 19 and 27, Williams 51 and 90+1)
Green Island 0-1 NAPPC (Dorack og 73)
Mayo Valley 0-2 Albrecht Turkish (Robinson 60, Yeoman 79)
Tenderville United 2-2 McDonald SC (Night 11 and 45+2; Munir 23, Williams 75)

Matchday Six… Ha, the Super Cup! HA! We wobble our bellies like a bowl full of jelly in your general direction! What a worthless trinket, an irritating little bauble, the kidney stone of international club football, the zit, the pimpl–

Really?

Oh, congratulations.

Does that make them the best team in the world, now then? Having held the Rockers to a draw at the Battleground and won the mini tournament on… points, for some reason. Or goal difference, at the very least.

No?

No, I suppose not. It was worth a go, though.

Fresh from their triumphant return to Onwere, and the second open-topped bus ride of the fortnight (they do like a parade in these parts), the naranja got back into the swing of things with a thumping five-two victory over Gamboa, featuring Oliveira Tavares’ first hat-trick of his career and some truly shocking defending from the visitors. Not having a single fit centre-half on your books’ll do that.

Bigger news was to come elsewhere however, with the disappointment of missing out on a debut TQCC final apparently hitting Green Island rather hard. It was a confused performance displayed in Clotaire this weekend, punctuated by moments of clear frustration and obvious anger – all combining to render the GIZ a somewhat distant shadow of their cousins who so serenely took the title last time out. Ham punished a static defence to wrap up a three-two win for Port of Clotaire, and Green Island slumped to their second defeat of the season – compared, may we point out, to a grand total of three all XXXV.

City are in a no better shape, deservedly going down in Arrigo, and it’s now perfectly clear that this Apertura is going to have very little in common with the last one, where the top two completely ran away with it. And if that does end up taking place, MarquezOW and Turkish currently look the more likely candidates – sharing top spot as they are, alongside Caires Sports.

Game of the day was certainly reserved for the El din clásico however, which did indeed provide everything we’ve come to expect – a fist fight, two players seeing red (Thoma Oseku and Luis Pavoni in this instance, though frankly it could have been anyone), both Da Silva and Baretto send to the stands (the latter opting to leave the stadium altogether and wait in the carpark, rather than take a sit surrounding by grinning Catedral supporters)… oh, and a decisive win for one side over the other.

That side being Cathedral City, who took their first set of three points of the season to crush their opponents four-one – and, in doing so, moved ahead of their rivals in the table. The defeat leaves the Marbles on five points and in fifteenth position – only one point and no places better off than they were this time last season under the ill-fated Abdoulaye Soro. Señor Daniel Gil is expected to be present at their next home game (for the first time in bloody ages), and even at this early stage the coming match with Mayo Valley could prove a must-win for the Sargossan in the dugout.

Both Nethertopian clubs lost, by the way. Weeeeeee.

Albrecht Turkish 3-0 AFC MN Smith (Innisvale 16, Robinson 56, Bakker 69)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-0 Caires City (Randjelovic 79)

Port of Clotaire 3-2 Green Island (O’Airmeadhaigh 15, Ham 57 and 86; Clayton 7, Cooper og 18)

Matchday Seven… Let’s drop a phat one, bitches!

We kick ourselves off on Saturday morning, with Green Island desperate to return to form and facing the visit of Albrecht FC. Not an especially familiar Albrecht FC though – one without the injured Nakatsuru – his place taken by young Adam KK (we seriously can’t be arsed to type out Kouakou Kouamé every time. I mean really. I’ve nothing against African immigration to the Candelarias, all very welcome I’m sure, tend to behave ‘emselves, wouldn’t have even the vaguest chance of a track and field medal in Aeropag without ‘em, but could they at least have the decency to call themselves “Smith”, or something? Or a ‘Jones’, or ‘Johnson’, or a ‘John’. Heck, I’d take a ‘Jeacock’. Or a ‘Matuschanskavasky’, even. Good, honest Candelariasian names. None of this accented muck), while Go Songji and Fahmi Hamizi’s presence added to the somewhat exotic feel.

As it was though, the game hinged on the old Krytenian warhorse Bart Graves. Ahh, it only seems like yesterday he arrived on the scene as but a young buck. Now well into his thirties and clearly set for his last term in Candelariasian football, he provided a proper masterclass for his would-be successor Gijs Van Aulen (or possibly Gijs van Aulen. Who can say?) in clearing off the line from Espy va Drake (remember him?) and a returning Anwamanë on several occasions. The GIZ certainly had the better of this one, but the combination of Graves, William and Rosalia remains arguably the division’s best and they kept Green Island just about at bay and secured a goalless draw.

Okay, so not so great for the global television audiences, there, but fear not! Your costly satellite subscriptions shall be saved by our dear friends in Nethertopia, as Sunday morning brought us the ‘topian derby with our egg and soldiers. Now this, this was a goal-fest.

No, no wait… No, I’m hearing… I’m hearing it wasn’t. Right.

This one was actually really rather dry, with studs starting to show only in the second period and no more than a couple of chances falling to the feet of any striker throughout. It’s probably something to do with the soporific time of day, and one must really beg the question of quite why it was deemed necessary to stick this one on at eleven in the morning. It’s not as though fans of either side are likely to have had time to get roaringly drunk even i… Okay, fair point, but crime is totally unknown in Nethertopia. Let’s stop worryingly pathetically about hooliganism and start putting these games on at eight in the evening, with a proper atmosphere and dead sheep’s heads.

Anyway, Roel Kuypers scored two minutes into second half injury time to take all three points away from Pereginus City, yawn yawn yawn, let’s get onto some proper Candelarian action, shall we? Show these froggies how it’s done!

Turkish versus City. Er, lesse. Decent Danny Bakker penalty shout after thirty minutes. Nasty Rosenthal tackle on Denny Alexander, latter came off worse, yellow card only. Williams missed a couple of sitters, Agostinho horribly unlucky from a corner with Stockley pulling off a superb save. Uhm…

Yeah alright, it was nil-nil again, but honestly! It’s not all about goals, is it? If you wanted that, you could trot off down the park and watch a bunch of plumbers hoof it about on a bog of a pi… Hello? Chaps?

Can’t take this opportunity to point out that Port of Clotaire are our league leaders, then? No?

Eh, fair enough. If you can’t beat ‘em, and so forth.

GOWON TERRY, WHACK IT SON!! G’WAAAN!!

Albrecht Turkish 0-0 Caires City
Arrigo Portuguese 1-1 Marquez-Onwere (Lacamoire 16; Oliveira Tavares 56)
El din Marbles 2-2 Mayo Valley (Pavoni 69, Herráez 79; Subudhi 17, Szatmári 76)
Caires Sports 1-2 AFC MN Smith (Belmore 8; Van der Laan 38, Rogers 44)
Candelaria-Allemali 3-1 Gamboa FC (Redzic 12 and 54, Silva 75; Nixon 77)

NAPPC 0-1 Tenderville United (Kuypers 90+2)

Matchday Eight… The build-up to this weekend was dominated by the rather sudden arrival of Hugo Anderson, the Pocoan not-quite-superstar wide man who turned up from Augustus.

Bearing in mind that the transfer window officially shut a month ago, this announcement was dubious to say the least, with chairman John Alessandri blaming communication mix-ups and such, and stressed that the boy had actually been in Arrigo all along, and here are the photos to prove it, nyaah.

They looked ‘shopped to us, but what do we know? We all drive a Morales, that’s the important point, and since those things can be ruddy death-traps without regular servicings, ooh-er, we in the press are on this matter united with the CMSC in letting the issue drop like a stone. Leather upholstery doesn’t buy itself.

Going straight into the first XI, Anderson earned a solid six on his debut but a resilient rearguard action from Jackson, van Houton tot Shaagen and Palmer (and what a supergroup they were) allowed CandelariaAM to cling onto a point and keep themselves in a not unhealthy tenth position. Not great for the home side, but goalless draws are all the rage these days, y’know?

Albrecht FC, meanwhile, actually contrived to score a goal but, after going down to ten men late in the first half following a dastardly Logan tackle on the fortunately unharmed Andryan, the Scorpions found it surprisingly hard going against the thus-far less than sensational Dons of Saurin. One-all it finished, leaving Torrealba’s side way down in eighth.

But they’re positively laughing at the plight of Caires City. Saturday morning handed us northern Candelaria’s only CMSC1 derby (well obviously there’s another one on matchday twenty-five, but… stop saying these things, fiend!) and, high quality though it was, it was a fixture dominated by the visitors to Rider Castle. Twice going in front, the Knights exemplified their best qualities by completing dictating the flow of the match and failing to fall victim to the aggression and increasingly frustration flowing through City veins. In the end, the Errant Knights were extremely – even comically – fortunate to come away with a two-all draw, sub Luke Lewis poking home with barely five minutes remaining and deflating Caires Sports’ hopes of a valuable victory.

Elsewhere, the match-up between two of the division’s form teams produced, it may not stun you to discover, a draw – with MarquezOW and Turkish slipping back behind Green Island as a result.

But sitting serenely and prettily at the top of the table are Port of Clotaire. How, it’s hard to say. The team is little different to last term’s – indeed, only the bench has been particularly shaken up – but that stability appears to have played right into Muscat’s hands. It’s still inexplicable how the likes of Ricky Archer, Brian Andrews, Tom van Dijk and Iñaki Arrigorriagakoa – who were all so utterly gash throughout XXXV – can now be clear at the top by two, and if it carries on much longer serious questions are going to have to be asked. Are they on drugs? Guided by a higher power? Been replaced by skrulls?

Who can say? But a five-nil victory for the Harpies just doesn’t seem natural. Even if it was against NAPPC…

Albrecht FC 1-1 McDonald SC (William 16; Gantser 56)
Arrigo Portuguese 0-0 Candelaria-Allemali
Caires City 2-2 Caires Sports (Williams 69; Lewis 85; Belmore 17, Valinial 76)
El din Marbles 1-1 AFC MN Smith (Erik Visser 8; Rogers 44)
Gamboa FC 2-3 Green Island (Roberto 38, Chambers 54; va Drake 12, Anwamanë 75 and 75)
Marquez-Onwere 1-1 Albrecht Turkish (Souto Maior 38; Bakker 7)
Mayo Valley 0-1 KT Hotspur (Dariegan 50)
Port of Clotaire 5-0 NAPPC (Sánchez García 12, Ham 55 and 61, Arrigorriagakoa 68, Hamblett 90+2)
Tenderville United 3-0 Cathedral City (Deleks 26 and 53, Meesschaert 67)

Matchday Nine… There are advantages to playing away from home, though you have to scrape around pretty deeply to find them. Look at this weekend, for example – just a single victory on the road, for MarquezOW at Caires Sports, a potentially very important result indeed, and a telling one at that. A brace from Souto Maior, seemingly back in favour following a period on Blanco da Cruz’s bench, handed the naranja the three points and left the Knights seven off the lead – and, while we’re still at that point in the season where managers can roll out the marathon-not-a-sprint thingy, we are more than a quarter of the way through now. It’s probably time to start drawing some conclusions.

Yeah alright, we’ll wait ‘till next week.

Anyway, more than a couple of CMSC sides discovered the plus points of a trip away from home this round, Albrecht FC for one. The Millerman Sheppard Stadium would not have been a happy place to be on Saturday, blockaded as it was by thousands of protesting supporters, who intermittently threw righteous vitriol in the general direction of the stadium and milled about looking gormless, in a manner not really seen since, well, since Andy Le Lan was appointed manager, actually.

It’s probably for that reason that they’ve waited so long to vent their spleen, but all of a sudden the venting’s coming thick and fast now. With Torrealba unable to spend during the break, and with continual concerns over the financial security of the club and its ownership, the natives are just starting to get a tad restless. Having to still play at their god-awful little stadium doesn’t help, quite liderally years after they were pwomiced a brand-spanking new one and, while the manager and his increasingly youthful side currently retain the general support of the fans, their current form isn’t inspiring a huge amount of confidence in the future. Granted, they’ve still only lost the once this year, but a two-all draw in Peregrinus City doesn’t go down especially well at a time when NAPPC are bottom of the table.

The Scorpions squad might well have been glad to get out of the limelight and hide away in Nethertopia, but they’ll face a thorough questioning on their return and life could soon start to become really quite uncomfy for the biggest club in the country.

Which almost rhymes. But doesn’t.

MN Smith are another for whom the trip up to Rosasharn represented some blessed relief. With the City of Bove Stadium currently padlocked and swarming with CMSC officials, anti-doping men with clipboards and fingers smelling unaccountably of fish and Alsatians (there should be a comma after fish, I think. It’s a complicated issue, and frankly I don’t think this is time or the place), the Smudgers travelling party could merrily escape the pokey-jabby fingers and general pressure of their powderkeg city by travelling up north, and they were duly rewarded with (deep breath now) a goalless draw.

Not indecent result though that was, the Smith have bigger fish, and possibly Alsatians, to fry in the coming weeks. For one thing, there’s the goalkeeper problem, with Lee Brown joining Kevin Mirakel in the injury list late in this game and forcing Arnold Postman between the sticks. Recalling their third-choice preference from loan, Harrison O’Sullivan is at least out of his teens and has a teensy weensy bit of experience playing (oh alright, watching) overseas, but in the long-term it could well prove another nail in this rotting coffin.

Caires City don’t particularly like being anywhere at the moment. Much the inferior side during the second period at the Marble Ground, the Errant Knights were duly beaten two-nil to slip a place to thirteenth, and Dionísio’s very lengthy honeymoon is very obviously now at an end. His achievements last time out will ensure that no questions are posed just yet over his immediate future, but it’s inarguable that this has been a horrible start for a talented team.

And Tenderville, while we’re on the subject, going down five-two at Port of Clotaire. While the live feed of the match fizzled out after seventy-ish minutes and the last Harpies goal was missed, any viewers still had time to come to the conclusion that the PoC are genuine contenders – though later news that O’Airmeadhaigh could miss the remainder of the Apertura (he goes in for a scan tomorrow, if you really care that much) will have dampened their hopes a tad.

Albrecht Turkish 1-0 Candelaria-Allemali (Robinson 45+1)
Caires Sports 0-2 Marquez-Onwere (Souto Maior 16 and 89)
El din Marbles 2-0 Caires City (Erik Visser 57, Horrigan 76)
Green Island 3-0 Arrigo Portuguese (Anwamanë 51, va Drake 72, Johnson 90+2)
KT Hotspur 0-0 AFC MN Smith
Mayo Valley 0-0 Cathedral City
McDonald SC 2-1 Gamboa FC (Andyran 75, Sheppard 80; Newcastle 65)
NAPPC 2-2 Albrecht FC (William og 20, Van Dyke 65; Hamizi 41, Tekeste 62)
Port of Clotaire 5-2 Tenderville United (Arrigorriagakoa 14, Ham 34 and 47, Van Dijk 41, Sánchez García 87; Deleks 32, Alan 72)

Matchday Ten… Ahh, double figures. What surprises shall thee bring?

Bart Graves was certainly left shocked and appalled after barely thirty second of the key clash between Port of Clotaire and Albrecht FC. From the kick-off, Ham Hyi-san found Iñaki Arrigorriagakoa on the edge of the Scorpions area, who evaded Oglethorpe Darwin and passed back to Tom van Dijk. While the Nethertopian still had plenty to do with William pounding towards him, the sleepiness of the Krytenian veteran proved costly and a sweet strike low to Rosalia’s left put the Harpies on course.

Victory here, even at home to a highly unpredictable Albrecht FC outfit, would certainly have underlined the PoC’s title aspirations. It didn’t happen. You gotta love the status quo.

Instead, Torrealba reacted at half-time by bringing on experienced campaigners Ben Zec and Fred Foster, who rapidly rewarded their manager’s decision with a goal and an assist respectively. They were the visitors’ only two efforts on target all match, but there we are. That’s why they’re champions, and similar glibness. Not that they actually are, but… Whatever. I’m tired and hungry.

Should Muscat’s men (and Muscat’s cats and dogs) prove indeed to be a flash in the pan, an altogether more important match took place in the capital this weekend – with Turkish hosting Green Island. It was a fixture dominated by Werner, now a full Cafundelense international, who played out of his skin in both halves of the pitch to register both the decisive goal and a series of saving tackles on Durosa and va Drake. The GIZ were still arguably the better side across the ninety, with Turkish also indebted to Tashkir and Estévez, but then they’re used to that. The Yaforite had, all in all, a pretty lousy first season in Candelariasian football while the former C&M international Estévez dropped out of Mannasuch’s thinking early on, but the duo have been in sublime form along with Werner to help register the division’s best defensive record thus far – and move behind Port of Clotaire at the top of the table on goals scored only.

MarquezOW missed out on their own chance to join the leaders on twenty-one points with a draw at the Marble Ground, while Tenderville’s much vaunted title challenge is fading fast with a poor home defeat to Mayo (a disappointing season for our Nethertopian friends? Oh, say it will be so, Jesus! No wait, I’m Jesús… Never mind, carry on)… but not quite as fast as Caires City.

Wow, basically. Better than they were last year, player for player, and with a more experienced coach in the dugout to boot (alright, it’s still the same bloke, but you can’t argue he’s not more experienced), and yet thebestclubintheworld (atleastuntilthenewrankingscomeout) sit just a point outside the relegation zone with Dionísio admitted that any bid for the top spot has long since ended. He’s not committing himself to a battle against the drop just yet, instead targeting a Globe Cup place from the Apertura and a TQCC return for the second half of the season, but the manner of their two-nil home defeat to KT Hotspur really was pretty damn embarrassing. Through in the fact that Leo Williams has been ruled out for the remainder of the Apertura with shin splints, or summat, and you’ve got a recipe for underachievement on a grand scale – one which, if it goes on much longer, could fry this club’s reputation and destroy its well-earned if thoroughly modern status as one of the country’s giants.

Happy holidays, City fans!

Tenderville United 1-3 Mayo Valley (Deleks 68; Warren 12, Subudhi 45+2 and 55)

Matchday Eleven… For want of anything else, let’s have a quick natter about KT Hotspur, shall we?

They’re surprisingly good.

Okay, moving on…

Seriously though (but oh, it does you good to have a laff, mercy me), this really wasn’t expected. While there’s still good players here, Dariegan is now well on the wrong side of thirty (and we all know what that mean, children), and Ryan Gonzaléz at t’other end of the pitch reaching the end of his powers too. The Sarzonian arrivals didn’t necessarily fill anyone with overwhelming confidence, meanwhile, and many suspected that Juan Carlos Revault would have real difficult ensuring anything better than a safe bottom-half finish.

As it is, the Spur now sit fourth, playing a comfortingly traditional brand of football (though they’ve outscored Portuguese and the Marbles among their fellow top nine sides) and really starting to impress now after delivering Blanco da Cruz his first league defeat with the naranja at the White Palace. Massively well-earned it was too, with Noah Collins on the left increasingly looking the complete player and more than ready to skip ahead of MarquezOW’s Oliveira Tavares in C&M reckoning, while the general fluidity on show was worth applauding from start to finish. Defensive they may be, but that doesn’t automatically equal ‘negative’ – and Revault is steadily learning his art and fashioning this team into genuine contenders for the TQCC places once more. If nothing else, it’s always welcome to see a Candelariasian coach come through, considering that the top three places are currently occupied by a Sortherner and two Vanorians, though it’s worth noting that Revault’s nearest cohorts are Luís Enrique Torrealba and Carlos Panadero, which doesn’t say much about the talents of their Candelarian countrymen. We really, really need Zachary Telemans and his Mayo Valley side to pick up soon, or we’ll never hear the end of it…

Elsewhere, City actually won a game. As did NAPPC, to move ahead of McDonald and Catedral in the relegation shake-up, but it’s otherwise pretty much as you were at the top… Tenderville’s superb comeback at the MSS aside to draw three-all, but let’s not talk about that, shall we?

Theodore Littlefellow broke his left leg in three place during MN Smith’s one-nil win in Hodgehill, meanwhile. Bless.

Albrecht FC 3-3 Tenderville United (Nakatsuru 16, Wanderley 56, Hamizi 69; Reargold 11, Deleks 76 and 79)
Caires Sports 0-2 Green Island (Anwamanë 8, Tinúviel 44)
Candelaria-Allemali 0-1 El din Marbles (Herráez 38)
Cathedral City 1-2 Caires City (Solaris 54; Mulder 12, Agostinho 75)
KT Hotspur 3-1 Marquez-Onwere (Smith 1, Collins 38, Clayton 75; Souto Maior 50)
Mayo Valley 0-1 AFC MN Smith (Budden 61)
McDonald SC 0-1 Albrecht Turkish (Bakker 68)
NAPPC 4-2 Arrigo Portuguese (Taylor 12, Thwante 55, Van Dyke 67, González Rodríguez 90+2; Macanás 26, Álvarez 26)
Port of Clotaire 4-1 Gamboa FC (Fuentes 38, Edwards 55, Sánchez García 65, Ham 71; Chinn 50)

Matchday Twelve… Albrecht FC lost this weekend.

Interestingly, that’s actually a noteworthy occurrence, being only their second defeat in a poor season. They’ve still failed to win more than twice the matches they’ve come away with three points from, however, and their accident-waiting-to-happen form was underlined with a dramatic crushing at the hands of Gamboa.

Castelão’s side have been superbly inconsistent this term, as their 5-1-6 record shows, but when they turn it on they can still damage the finest of opponents, and pre-season rumours of a relegation struggle look almost as far off as they do for KT Hotspur. The presence of Simon Chinn up front against the Scorpions only served to help them even further, with the twenty-six year-old desperate to prove Torrealba at his former club as a whole wrong for preferring Wanderley and Kim, and latterly Hamizi, over the Songstress local.

One game does not humble pie make, or summat, but his display will certainly live long in the memory in the Chinn household at least. A brace and two assists; the important stuff came during a barely credible spell of four minutes in the early ‘60s, during which time Rosalia was beaten no fewer than three times. Which everyone associated with the visiting side found really rather embarrassing.

Moving on very briefly, since we kinda forgot we ought to do this before we went off to beddybyes; PoC and Turkish are still really good, Green Island a bit less so but getting there and their comeback from two goals down at the Marble Ground bodes well, Caires City are gash and something needs to be done, Jarrell Reuberson-Mohammed is one seriously unlucky bugger after starting his first game in ages only to be stretchered off after barely fifteen minutes, and KT Hotspur really are still annoyingly handy.

Ta.

Albrecht Turkish 3-0 NAPPC (Tashkir 16, Alexander 89, Bakker 90+1)
Arrigo Portuguese 1-2 Port of Clotaire (Lacamoire 57; Edwards 72, Sánchez García 76)
Caires City 0-0 Mayo Valley
El din Marbles 2-2 Green Island (Erik Visser 41 and 45+2; Young 75, va Drake 80)
Gamboa FC 4-2 Albrecht FC (Chinn 20 and 64, Potter 62 and 65; St. Louis 34, Hamizi 41)
KT Hotspur 2-1 Candelaria-Allemali (Smith 45, Collins 87; Silva 41)
Marquez-Onwere 3-0 Cathedral City (Smit 14, Souto Maior 32, Pappas 72)
McDonald SC 0-3 Caires Sports (Tascarnin 5, Belmore 42, Adirondu 53)
Tenderville United 3-0 AFC MN Smith (Meesschaert 74, Reargold 78, Deleks 81)

Matchday Thirteen… Here be the big one, then – the clash between the top two, at the unlikely location of Harper Street, Clotaire…

Not too many people would’ve pick this match, at the start of the season, to be one of the Apertura’s most vital. Yet Port of Clotaire continued to give a majestic account of themselves throughout the first half, allowing Turkish to impotently control the balance of possession before repeatedly hitting the visitors on the break; Brittany Paxson proving Turkish’s last line of defence on several occasions as both Ham and Arrigorriagakoa went desperately close. The PoC finally got their deserved opener shortly before half-time, with Tom van Dijk felled just inside the box by Pablo Estévez and Sánchez García confidently putting it away.

And then it all went tits up.

While the PoC’s second half performance was undeniably dreadful, an evolutionary throwback from previous years under Muscat that with a bit of luck won’t set the tone for the rest of the season; Turkish were back on fine form. There’s still reason to question aspects of Mannasuch’s team selection – from Lori stuck out on the left, the Director of Football’s nephew on the right (we still say that that’s a little too convenient, as well as Alexander’s undoubtedly played this term) and the too-good-to-be-true resurrection of Estévez – but one defeat in thirteen speaks for itself. Two-one it finished, and Turkish are alone at the top of the table.

The experts’ faith in Green Island, however, is such that they remain favourites to take the ickle Apertura trophy but, with every side outside the drop zone nominally in with a chance of grabbing at least a TQCC qualifying place, there’s still plenty to play for.

So let’s move on hastily from this weekend, hurry on through the next, and then we can get onto the important stuff. Ta.

AFC MN Smith 0-3 Caires City (Agostinho 16, González 56, Lewis 69)
Albrecht FC 1-1 Arrigo Portuguese (Hamizi 79; Macanás 76)
Caires Sports 1-0 NAPPC (Belmore 17)
Candelaria-Allemali 2-0 Cathedral City (Fox 8, Kwan 44)
El din Marbles 2-1 McDonald SC (Pavoni 38, Díaz García 54; Andryan 12)
Green Island 2-0 KT Hotspur (Anwamanë 8, Hardy 75)
Mayo Valley 1-1 Marquez-Onwere (Darby 38; Oliveira Tavares 1)
Port of Clotaire 1-2 Albrecht Turkish (Sánchez García 42; Lori 61, Yeoman 68)
Tenderville United 2-0 Gamboa FC (Night 12, Deleks 45+1)

Matchday Fourteen… T’was time for the capital city derby this weekend, an occasion made all the more lively by Turkish’s and the Scorpions current divergent form. Even the Solidarity felt quite atmospheric. And that almost never happens.

In the event, however, honours were even. A Daniel Bakker penalty early into the second half appeared to seal things for the home side, but an injury to Werner soon after left the home side with a major hole in the heart of the midfield, one which Karl Garay proved entirely ill-equipped to fill and Nakatsuru soon exploited, twice sending Wanderley clean through to eventually bring up the desmond.

I’ll tell ye more, but I’m in desperate need of a sandwich at this point.

Elsewhere, Port of Clotaire rallied at home to Caires Sports, whose traditionally sixth-place finish is just starting to look like a rather tall order (no wonder they’re behind Akbarabad in World Cup qualifying), while Green Island registered a thumping away win at Catedral to remain third. Fernando da Silva’s position with the Cats must surely be under threat now, despite leading the club to the CMSC2 title last term – Cathedral City really can’t afford another relegation, and honestly don’t deserve one when you look at their side, player for player. Seven points from safety, they’ve got a mountain to climb already and Da Silva doesn’t look much like the man who’s going to help them on their way.

KT Hotspur meanwhile are still fifth, and look nailed on for at least a Globe Cup tilt. Surely some mistake?

Albrecht Turkish 2-2 Albrecht FC (Robinson 16, Bakker 56; Wanderley 69 and 79)
Arrigo Portuguese 4-0 Gamboa FC (Álvarez 8, Oughton 17, Lacamoire 44, Castro 76)
Caires City 0-0 Tenderville United
Cathedral City 0-5 Green Island (va Drake 12, Tinúviel 38, Anwamanë 54, Young 75, Kures 80)
KT Hotspur 2-0 McDonald SC (Dariegan 1, Davies og 38)
Marquez-Onwere 1-0 AFC MN Smith (Oliveira Tavares 50)
Mayo Valley 1-1 Candelaria-Allemali (Walker 61; Silva 68)
NAPPC 1-0 El din Marbles (Taylor 12)
Port of Clotaire 3-1 Caires Sports (Arrigorriagakoa 55 and 67, Hamblett 90+2; Adirondu 26)

Matchday Fifteen… Well that took long enough.

Nine weeks later, we finally have Green Island back where they belong, at the summit of Candelariasian football. An odiously simple demolition of Mayo Valley – hardly a stunner, given that the west Candelarians have won a single game since matchday two – was all it ultimately took, thanks to a pair of draws for the previous top two.

In Turkish’s case they deserved rather more, an Alexander free-kick equalised late in the first half with a John Potter penalty, but the second half was largely devoid of set pieces and the visitors strugglers to break through the unexpectedly packed defence of Gamboa. Castelão’s side lived on their nerves throughout however, with Danny Bakker highly unfortunate to be denied a spot kick of his own from a woeful Daniel Stride tackle – the first foot the young full-back has really put wrong since coming in for the injured Daniel Lacombe.

Besides the dropped points, Turkish would also see Bakker shown a second yellow late on, his suspension for next weekend set to coincide with an absence for Calabrese after his own worrying injury on international duty, though at least they have options to cover them. Bloody loads of ‘em, actually…

Port of Clotaire also suffered, with Ham Hyi-san limping off early, though in his case it doesn’t look quite as serious. His absence was enough to stop the Harpies adding more than one goal to their thus-far impressive tally, and the PoC were ultimately lucky to escape with a point at Barreto’s horribly inconsistent Marbles.

And talking of inconsistency: Albrecht FC, who get younger and more nymphish by the day. With Nakatsuru clearly carrying a knock and sub’d for Kouakou Kouamé early on, the Scorpions looked completely incapable of breaking down Caires Sports, who struck themselves half-way through the second half from – and this may surprise you – a counter-attack, Adirondu putting away the winner for one-nil. The Knights’ hopes of grabbing a TQCC spot from the Apertura still look grim, with MarquezOW six points ahead – and Caires City did their neighbours no favours in letting hold of a lead at home to the naranja to crumble to their sixth defeat of the season.

The boos rang out around the McNeil Bingo Arena, but it’s all for show – there’s no chance of them driving Dionísio out now, even if they’ve got almost no chance of even grabbing a Globe Cup place, in an outcome that’s really not going to help their international ranking (and isn’t great news for the CMSC’s flash coefficient as a whole)…

One man who is gone, however, is Da Silva at Catedral. A hapless three-nil defeat in Saurin provided his end, with a new man expecting in the dugout after the CMS Cup break. Quite what said individual can hope to achieve with a side with just six points to its name is unclear, but they still have the players for, let’s say, a fifteenth place finish. And if they don’t manage that, it could well be curtains for Cathedral City on a rather more permanent basis…

Albrecht FC 0-1 Caires Sports (Adirondu 71)
Arrigo Portuguese 2-2 Tenderville United (Macanás 44, Oughton 45+1; Night 48, Kuypers 90+2)
Caires City 1-2 Marquez-Onwere (Lewis 35; Smit 40, Sáez 83)
Candelaria-Allemali 0-0 AFC MN Smith
El din Marbles 1-1 Port of Clotaire (Herráez 26; Edwards 21)
Gamboa FC 1-1 Albrecht Turkish (Potter 40; Alexander 18)
Green Island 4-0 Mayo Valley (Young 43, Aldren 45, Anwamanë 46, Paterson 57)
McDonald SC 3-0 Cathedral City (Sheppard 1 and 72, Froggatt 31)
NAPPC 3-1 KT Hotspur (Van Dyke 46 and 51, González Rodríguez 58)

Defending champion Raynor City United will face former champion CS Ourseville 1093 at Isserson Stadium for the seventeenth TakilQuip Champions’ Cup. Raynor City has become the first team to get this chance to defend their title by reaching the subsequent final (though not the first to reach two consecutive finals, as Yuba United was on the losing end in both Champions’ Cup 5 and 6). Ourseville 1093 will be looking to win an unprecedented fifth Champions’ Cup title for their association.

It was another incredible season for the Taeshan Soccer League. Once again league leaders the Atlantea Hurricanes were pretty much unstopable winning the league by 11 points over second place Wiechester FC. The Bayern Phoenix would seal another TQCC spot with a third place. The bottom half saw Lochen's Yellow Jackets finally secumb back to relagation, as did AC Algaer. They will be replaced in the next season by the ever exuberant Calendara Kings, and the Blacklake Blues who pounded their opponents all season. The Machrobaty Monkeys would also find themselves secumbing to relagation with a horribel season, they will be replaced in division the second division by Bayern-Algear who did 10 times what many though they could do and achieved promotion. On another note by next season both the Zuerst and Zweite Teilung's will be change to a different term, with league translators finally deciding on the final term to be announced before the next season.

Code: Select all
Season  Champions                   Runners-up               Third Place

1   Stanley University         Markham University       Banks Theological College

6   Markham University         Prifysgol Gymraeg        St. Martin University
7   Moorcroft University       St. Martin Medical Inst. Snaith Maritime College

And so ran the eighth season of the West Zirconian Academic League:

As usual, a totally open competition, though the appearance of last season's champions Moorcroft University in last place at half-way was surprising. They did pick up during the second half, but far, far too late to stop a surprise win for St. Mark's College.

O-LEAGUE SEASON III PREVIEW

AIGBURTH ATHLETIC
Transfer Activity: Poconese defender David Beecham joins the promoted Latics; Sean Mallon comes over from Ellisham. Zac Rodriguez, meanwhile, disappears off into the sunset.

Foreigners: David Beecham (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)

Key Man: Calvin Howard
Last Season: 2nd (O-League Two)
Prediction: 9th

AVIDIA UNITED
Transfer Activity: An interesting wave of signings at the New City Stadium. They sold Liam George to Caversham for €K3.75m, then slashed out on Robert Kapromanowitz (Krytenia Emberton, €K1.1m), Richard Ravenscroft (Notegia Rangers, €K0.5m), and silver-haired young Thackworth goalkeeper Arian for €K350,000.
Likely First XI: K Westleigh - S Richter, M Oncabro, D Volpe, M Hallensen - L Wassow, E Sorrab, M Tellesen, L Wassow - F Osterwald, R Kapromanowitz
Foreigners: Marco Oncabro, Emanuel Sorrab (both Uiri)
Rami's View: Not so much a surprise package any more. But have they fallen behind as others have strengthened?
Key Man: Lawrence Wassow
Last Season: 3rd
Prediction: 5th

Likely First XI: C Iordanescu - L Holden, A Iagas, S Manocz, C Berra - J Morezzi, S Ayris, D May, S Marron - R Kenny, JA Cantona

Key Man: Jean-Antoine Cantona
Last Season: 10th
Prediction: 10th

CASUALS OSTERIA
Transfer Activity: Kevin Langer moves up to the coaching staff, and Marco Tristan joins from Avidia City in exchange for thirteen and a half million Credits.
Likely First XI: M Paignton - J Mickleson, A Glasscock, S Domenico, D Magrin - J Simpson, N Spim, C Darroch, S Presley - D Iuliano, M Tristan
Foreigners: Nicolau Spim (Uiri)
Rami's View: Back where they belong after their Season I purgatory, and fully deserving of their second place. I think they could even go one better this year.
Key Man: Stephen Presley
Last Season: 2nd
Prediction: 1st

CAVERSHAM
Transfer Activity: Intriguing buy in the form of Robert Hinchcliffe; Liam George comes in to replace the retiring Gerry Callejon.
Likely First XI: A Muça - D Garcia, S Shah, G Crespo, J Chickerell - R Hinchcliffe, M Romanov, I Dupegne, G Ormondroyd - L George, G Lewis
Foreigners: Alfonso Muça, Gonçalo Crespo (both Uiri); Robert Hinchcliffe (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
Rami's View: Will be hard-pressed to get a UICC place in a competitive division, will be fighting for a Globe Cup spot at best.
Key Man: Liam George
Last Season: 6th
Prediction: 6th

CLUB FRANCOPHONE
Transfer Activity: The Monthuez side sign their first ever foreigner in the form of Poconese midfielder Lilian Blanc.
Likely First XI: H Louret - F Leclerc, J Aliadiere, F Grosjean, C Martin - S Michel, C Queller, L Blanc, M Bourrier - L Loupé, C Cavelle
Foreigners: Lilian Blanc (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
Rami's View: Just not strong enough. Merçi, et bonne nuit.
Key Man: Hugo Louret
Last Season: 3rd (O-League Two)
Prediction: 16th

DEREAPOLIS CITY
Transfer Activity: €K900,000 is all they spent, on goalkeeper Craig Gabbidon from Stratford.
Likely First XI: C Gabbidon - P Connors, S Jordan, L Cockerill, J Evans - C Lord, B Caive - W Bradic, L Flitcroft - B Phillips, R Hall
Foreigners: None
Rami's View: Last season was the exception proving the rule; back to lower mid-table for the Derries.
Key Man: Will Bradic
Last Season: 5th
Prediction: 12th

ELLISHAM
Transfer Activity: Sean Mallon may have been offloaded to Aigburth, but they've attracted exciting young Ousevale striker to Wanderers park with a promise of first-team football.
Likely First XI: A Byron - D Andreasson, R Tsang, G Shawcross, N Tipovic - R Hancher, L Kopernik, K Beleiro - K Lloyd - J Johnson, J Campbell
Foreigners: None
Rami's View: Starting to look like a more cohesive unit. May even make the top half.
Key Man: Kiefer Lloyd
Last Season: 13th
Prediction: 8th

EMBERTON REDS
Transfer Activity: The Reds liked Allan Eagles so much they gave Avidia City €K4.5m and Nick Wren to get him.
Likely First XI: G Dixon - D Asanovic, P Rove, L Smith, L Pageter - R Vinick, D Giacomelli, A Eagles, K Ickx - E Cachado, J Barcali
Foreigners: Gareth Dixon (Starblaydia); Eduardo Cachado (Uiri)
Rami's View: Must do better. Especially with the talent at Peter Rossi's disposal.
Key Man: Gareth Dixon
Last Season: 8th
Prediction: 7th

KRYTENIA EMBERTON
Transfer Activity: Robert Kapromanowitz leaves for Avidia United, whilst Jeruselem international Riley Smeghurst joins for an impressive eight million.

Foreigners: Matthijs Seyouche (Nethertopia); Riley Smeghurst (Jeruselem)

Key Man: Matthijs Seyouche
Last Season: 12th
Prediction: 12th

LESTON TOWN
Transfer Activity: Jack Zimmerman comes in from relegated Hastings.
Likely First XI: S Green -R Garrett, C Hegarty, M Kirschner, R Varadero - G Salter, L Jones, J Loader, W Harris - Y Soma, J Zimmerman
Foreigners: Yoshiaki Soma (Dancougar)
Rami's View: Not even "SuperSoma" can save Ol' Les.
Key Man: Yoshiaki Soma
Last Season: 11th
Prediction: 15th

MERCIA BROMHAM
Transfer Activity: Max Belmont joins the champions from Poconese side Skyte City.
Likely First XI: D Kelly - P Roberts, M Crossley, M Belmont, C Nelson - T Griffiths, R Corrin, J Greene, P Teixeira - I Betts, S Miller
Foreigners: Max Belmont (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
Rami's View: Double-winners will be hard-pressed to keep hold of either trophy. Should be thereabouts at least though.
Key Man: Paul Teixeira
Last Season: 1st
Prediction: 4th

OUSEVALE BOROUGH
Transfer Activity: The United Nations of Ousevale gain another nationality; and eye-watering €K14.4m spent on Bostopian centre-back Kyle Burrows. Jermaine Johnson is on his way out after complaining about the lack of first-team opportunities.
Likely First XI: P Hean - D Miller, AJ Song, K Burrow, R Sissiki - L Chaddingley, S Lee, R Hoëdic - A Williamson, P Germano, S Roshanak
Foreigners: Piran Hean, Roparzh Hoëdic (both Sorthern Northland); Soraya Roshanak (Starblaydia); Song Ahn-Ji (Han Empire); Dai Sewell (Cambrow); Kyle Burrows (Bostopia).

Key Man: Roparzh Hoëdic
Last Season: 4th
Prediction: 3rd

SECKLOW
Transfer Activity: Owen Tudor is the only man in; he replaces Stratford-bound Dan Stead.
Likely First XI: G Ridgeon - B Müller, L Portego, B Ridgewell, T Abbieri - J McCartney, O Tudor, K Saxon, S Aquileri - S Garrinov, B Stepanek
Foreigners: Gustavo Lima (Uiri)
Rami's View: Performances as contrasting as their hoops. "Prepared"? I beg to differ.
Key Man: Kevin Saxon
Last Season: 9th
Prediction: 13th

STANTON TOWN
Transfer Activity: Breaking the bank, the Dockers splashed out a club record €K16m on Sortherner Marek Krofcky. Rodrigo signs from Port Los Renato in QPeMA for less than a tenth of that.
Likely First XI: C Kuranec - T Levac, K Pedersen, Rodrigo - R Keris - J Fox, A Prosser, M Krofcky, S Yost - M Jansen, B Bevan
Foreigners: Sjakie Yost (Nethertopia); Marek Krofcky (Sorthern Northland); Rodrigo (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)

Last Season: 7th
Prediction: 2nd

Collegiate Sporting Alliance, 1775 season

(very, very, extremely, enormously late - seriously, the 1776 season is actually scheduled to end tomorrow!)

We welcome four new members to the CSA this year - Central Sumbobor and Mersira in the Lowland Conference, and Northwestern Salle and Till State in the Midland. With these additions, every conference now has twelve members.

The left column shows the final CSA coefficient for all 72 teams. Remember, the top sixteen go to the national championship, unless a conference champion finishes outside the top sixteen (which happened again this year - sorry, Darnai).

Prince's Shield III

It's that time of the season, once again, for 6 nations to send forth competitors to take part in the pre-season friendly tournament The Prince's Shield. The tournament, now in it's third incarnation hosts teams from Candelaria and Marquez, Somewhereistonia, Koseli Cumhuriyelter, Sargossa and Krytenia plus our national champions Pythons and those bearing the royal seal Royal Khaldoon.

The 8 teams are divided into two groups of 4 and will play each other once, with the top two teams from group A and B qualifying for the semi-finals, and the winners of those games come face to face in the final to lift the very shiny Prince's Shield (which you can take home with you, a bit like a party favor).

Results and final table for group A looked a little something like this

Code: Select all
Ilhankoy 2-2 Pythons
Atlantas Klaipaada 3-1 Estrella Torreon

Pythons 1-0 Estrella Torreon
Ilhankoy 2-3 Atlantas Klaipaada

Pythons 2-4 Atlantas Klaipaada
Estrella Torreon 2-0 Ilhankoy

Pos  Team                       P   W   D   L   GF   GA   GD  Pts
   1  Atlantas Klaipaada         3   3   0   0   10    5    5    9
   2  Pythons                    3   1   1   1    5    6   -1    4
   3  Estrella Torreon           3   1   0   2    3    4   -1    3
   4  Ilhankoy                   3   0   1   2    4    7   -3    1

Fan favourites Atlantas Klaipaada qualify for the knockout stages once again, and for the first time ever a Poconese team make it out of the group stage. Estrella Torreon and Ilhankoy were unfortunately eliminated at this stage.

In the other group, the action was a little tighter, with all 4 teams separated by just two points.

Code: Select all
BobBank F.C. 4-2 Royal Khaldoon
Mercia Bromham 2-1 Arrigo Portuguese

Royal Khaldoon 1-5 Arrigo Portuguese
BobBank F.C. 1-1 Mercia Bromham

Arrigo Portuguese 4-4 BobBank F.C.
Mercia Bromham 2 - 3 Royal Khaldoon

Pos  Team                       P   W   D   L   GF   GA   GD  Pts
   1  BobBank F.C.               3   1   2   0    9    7    2    5
   2  Arrigo Portuguese          3   1   1   1   10    7    3    4
   3  Mercia Bromham             3   1   1   1    5    5    0    4
   4  Royal Khaldoon             3   1   0   2    6   11   -5    3

Reigning champions BobBank top the group, while Arrigo Portuguese edge out Mercia Bromham on goal difference, Royal Khaldoon again fail to impress in front of the Royal family.

In the semi-finals

Pythons faced BobBank and Atlantas went head to head with Arrigo

Pythons 2-4 BobBank F.C.
Arrigo Portuguese 4-2 Atlantas Klaipaada

The teams from group B mirrored each others result and knocked out the opposition with 4-2 victories. This set up a rematch finale final fixture. The sides couldn't be separated in their group game and the final would be tight.

Final
BobBank F.C. 0-4 Arrigo Portuguese
or we had assumed it would be.

Congratulations are extended to our Rushmore neighbors Candelaria and Marquez and the winners Arrigo Portuguese and comiserations go out to BobBank FC who reached their second consecutive final. And a massive thank you goes out to all those teams who entered for making it another wonderful Prince's Shield.

International University Challenge Championship 19
presented by Nakiti Corporation

Welcome to the unexpectedly delayed 19th edition of the IUCC, the premier tournament for university football teams around the multiverse.

There were officially 27 entrants from nine nations this time around, but IUCC organizers didn't particularly like having an odd number. So for the second time in the history of the competition, a nation has been granted a fourth entry, as defending champions Kasai Academy of Dancougar have been invited back to defend their title (despite Dancougaran officials apparently believing that Thane College won the previous tournament despite not even reaching the knockout stages last time around).

In an effort to hopefully gain more interest from some of the less-successful nations, it was decided that every participating association would have at least one team automatically qualify for the group stage. The top three nations in the current rankings (Vephrall, Dancougar, and Candelaria And Marquez) were each given two auto-qualifiers, while the other six nations received one each for a total of twelve. These twelve teams would be joined by the eight qualifying round winners to set up the rest of the tournament just like last time, with four groups of five, top two reaching the knockouts.

The IUCC organizers were rather embarrassed to realize upon the closing of signups that they had completely forgotten to solicit any bids to host the knockout stages; as a result, Ellime e Vephrall in Meice was awarded the honor, since after all a bunch of Vephrese blokes are running the thing and Vephrall had only hosted one of the previous 14 editions.

Howling Scanias Football League Season 2

After the season was almost cancelled due to a nationwide player strike, fans all over Howling Scanias were looking forward to seeing the second season of the Howling Scanias Football League get underway, albeit 6 months late. Both divisions were reasonably even again and there were many upsets, but the top two teams in the country remained the same, Port Adelaide Power took out the Premier League title again, and Tolley United finished 11 points behind. Para Hills (who competed in last season's Globe Cup) and Wingfield Royals were relegated.

And so it begins, season 4 of Una Serie, with a rundown of the 12 teams competing. Staring with reigning champions, Pythons

Pythons – A third league crown in as many years and Pythons are the strongest competitors out there, but have they lost some of that attacking edge with Van Dyke gone? Manager Mark Sloan says they’ve got a ready made replacement in Enrico Dossena, but whether or not that is the case the big man is going to be missed.
Stadium – St. Jonas Stadium (22,000)
Squad - I've spent part of my weekend doing this, so please take a look if you're marginally interested. http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Pythons#Squad
Star Man – Frederico (striker)
Manager – Mark Sloan
Expectations – Fans will want another trophy, but with Van Dyke gone and replaced with a young Sargossan the competition may be wide open.
KitImage

Ridgemont Town – Second place last year, and no changes to the squad this year. This may reflect a confident coach or one with absolutely no funds what-so-ever. Either way Ridgemont can be expected to be there or thereabouts.
Stadium – St. Valerie’s Stadium (30,000)
Squad - Same deal, look here - http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Ridgemont_Town
Star Man – Frank Le Tissier (midfield)
Manager – Guus Wilhelmson.
Expectations – anywhere inside the top 4, they’re capable of taking the league or nothing at all.
Kit - Image

Augustus – A second Trofeo Royal and a highest finish, but Hugo Anderson’s gone. $15 million big ones and most of it spent, they’ve got a centreback from the CMSC, a Toyur international striker and former under 21’s midfielder Rowan Askwith from Barbossa. Plus a midfielder on loan to try “replace” Anderson.
Stadium – Nestle Road (24,000)
Squad - I'm not forcing you to look, but it is here http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Augustus
Manager – Gianfranco Vianna
Star Man – Roy James (goalkeeper)
Expectations – The fans would like another trophy just to prove Anderson is replaceable and will be hoping they can shake up the monopoly for the league title.
Kit - Image

Almondvale – Aint got no money, but continue to be a top half team. Getting better with every passing season, just what is Fletcher Goodwin’s deal? Loan deals and free agents often don’t make a cohesive side, but under Goodwin they have gelled and formed a solid team. He needs a title, even if it is just for the prize money.
Stadium – Almondvale Stadium (25,000)
Squad - http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Almondvale
Manager – Fletcher Goodwin
Star Man – Seb Guardiola (right midfield)
Expectations – top 6, top 4 sounds a little too optimistic but is the more likely destination for Vale.
Kit - Image

Royal Khaldoon – no more mucking about, they have just spent $20 million on one player. Their intentions are clear and if the team fails to deliver expect to see the back of Somewhereistonian coach Tarmo Mäe. A championship leader in his homeland, this season appears to be theirs to lose.
Stadium – Royal Stadium (27,000)
Squad - check it out, $20 million on one player. http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Royal_Khaldoon
Star Man – Tomasz Poborsky (defender)
Manager – Tarmo Mäe
Expectations – The fans, the board, the pundits, everyone expects a title this year, but will they crumble under the expectant pressure.
Kit - a Image

Athletic Khaldoon – It is rude to describe Athletic as a non-entity, but what do they actually do other than finish mid-table every year? Not much we hear you cry, well that is absolutely true, expect more of the same from the perennial Una Serie ghosts. They’re here, but are they really here?
Stadium – Khaldoon Central Stadium (40,000)
Squad - to be honest I wouldn't bother looking http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Athletic_Khaldoon
Manager – Alan Fenwick.
Star Man – Brad Johnson (goalkeeper)
Expectations – mid table 7-8, might even get 6th again. Who knows? Who Cares?
Kit - Image

Jonastown United – Bang, and J town have arrived and finished a respectable 7th in their second season. One of three teams favorite for the drop last term, J Town ground out some respectable results and managed a mid-table finish. More of the same this year.
Stadium – Caiman Stadium (26,00)
Squad - http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Jonastown_United
Star Man – Carlos Borges (striker)
Manager – Ricky Ortega
Expectations – Same again please. No need to over exert themselves and try force their way up the league, just continue to establish their position.
Kit Image

Real Minanda – Minanda maintain their effortless attempts to stay afloat in the league. A touch of enthusiasm around the training pitch would go a long way, they have plenty of talent in the team, just a lack of desire and will for all intents and purposes remain a mid-table team.
Stadium – El Estadio de la Esperanze (58,000)
Squad - http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Real_Minanda The Real squad can be found there.
Manager – Hector Gonzales
Star Man – Richard Ramirez (midfield)
Expectations –Fans would like to see them claw their way to into the top 6 and Gonzales would like a 9inch wang, somethings never happen no matter how much you wish.
Kit Image

Salaga F.C – Started abysmally, picked it up and then collapsed. Three wins in 22 games signaled a terrible second half to the season and possibly hinted that this season Salaga would be relegation fodder. Fortunately for them Belle-Isle are probably worse and if they can win the head-to-heads they may just survive.
Stadium – Estadio Ruiz (21,000)
Squad - if you care, it's here http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Salaga_F.C
Manger – Khalid Farooz
Star Man – Giovanni Van Dyke (midfield)
Expectations – Bottom 3, no ifs ands or buts, Salaga will be clinging to their league position come the end of the season.
Kit Image

Skyte City – Just what the hell happened there last season? Two consecutive second place finishes and then a sudden implosion. Daryl Ferguson left, Dennis Vaz Tae took over, did a God awful job and was subsequently sacked. Caretaker manager Neil Howzer sold some of the flotsam and brought in some new faces.
Stadium – Grayside Stadium (20,000)
Squad - http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Skyte_City
Manager – They don't have one.. if you're interested just send us a TG
Star Man – Mishka Mistrikova (defender)
Expectations – an improvement on last year for starters. The fans would like to see them shift back up the league and so would the players who are still here.
Kit Image

Valengren Kickers – Strugglers last year and strugglers again this year. They just make it out alive this season with Salaga and Belle-Isle fighting to survive, but they’ll have to take every opportunity granted to them.
Stadium – Union Sports Stadium (20,000)
Squad - Lot of natives, who don't play well together. http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Valengren_Kickers
Manger – Ray Hodgson
Star Man – Nazim Benayoun
Expectations – Bottom 3, and they will survive on a wing and a prayer.
Kit Image

Belle-Isle on Sea – Promoted as champions, but the pedigree they showed in winning the lower league will not likely be enough to keep them up in the Una Serie. There only major signing has been a reserve attacker from Real Minanda. There lack of strength and depth may be there downfall. They’ll be cutting it close if they stay up.
Stadium – Newry Road (17,000)
Squad - They don't have a wiki page just yet.. so the squad will remain a mystery
Manager – Gavin Dickinson
Star Player – David Pallister
Expectations – Unfortunately for Belle-Isle not an awful lot. Fans will hope they can just stave off relegation, but with the players at their disposal they look doomed.

Una Serie
Season IV, Week 1

Almondvale 0 – 3 Skyte City
Manager-less Skyte stunned Almondvale with an impressive 3 – 0 victory away from home. New forward Gaston Batista scored twice in the first half to put the visitors ahead.
The home side rallied late in the first half and Fabien Fabianzki was called into action on a number of occasions. However the resurgent Skyte side finished off the ‘Vale in the 63rd minute when substitute striker Bob Wallace benefited from Amets Mendiluze shot which struck the post and came back out into the 6 yard box where the forward gratefully accepted the ball and put it into the open goal. Captain Fabianzki commented that

“We’ve pulled together under Howzer, but we don’t know if he’s gonna be around for long, it’s a little daunting being so unsure of who'll be in charge for the season”

Royal Khaldoon 4 – 2 Valengren Kickers
Royal Khaldoon’s first game of the season sees them move into second in the league with a comfortable home win over Valengren Kickers.
New boy Vytautas Törk dominated the midfield and his incisive passes set up the first two goals. Törk found Juan Segura after on 4 minutes and the Sargossan forward blasted home the opener. Omid Rustu headed home a Törk freekick after 16 minutes to put Royal 2 ahead. Before half time attacking midfielder Adailton found space on the edge of the box to rifle home from distance to put the home side comfortably in front.
In the second half Valengren grabbed a goal early on through Jurgen Lahm. The striker looks set to leave Valengren at the end of the season as he refuses to sign a new contract and will walk away for free.
Another new face for Royal added the fourth, Karbul Bak found space in the box for Adailton to square to and the striker side footed beyond the Valengren keeper.
The visitors snatched a late second, but by then the result was beyond doubt and Tarmo Mäe collected three points in what was seen as a devastating Royal display.

Pythons 1 – 0 Jonastown United
Reigning champions Pythons kicked off their season with a scrappy 1 – 0 home win against Jonastown.
Jonastown arrived in Khaldoon looking to upset the team who are now without Ishmael Van Dyke, whose presence was sorely missed as the Pythons forwards blew a number of opportunities to take the lead, with Enrico Dossena the main culprit.
Carlos Borges almost gave Jonastown the lead but dragged his shot wide when one-on-one with the keeper.
In the end Dossena atoned for his earlier misses when Dean Bowyers long range effort ricocheted around the box off defenders legs before the young striker lashed at the ball and smashed it into the goal. After the game Pythons manager Mark Sloan

“Clearly Ishmael will be missed, but we have enough talent in the team to continue on without him. We fully expect to be able to take our 4th title.”

Augustus 1 – 1 Salaga F.C
Augustus are one team who will be looking to challenge Pythons for their title, but an early slip up against Salaga has hinted at disarray amongst the Augustus midfield now talismanic winger Hugo Anderson has left for sunny shores.
Augustus were behind in the first half hour when Benito Gabrini scored only his 14th goal for Salaga since arriving from Athletico Palampas the previous year. Augustus attempts to get back into the game proved difficult as their midfield lacked cohesion. It took until the 78th minute for Toyur international Kristofer Svensson to latch onto Rowan Askwith’s through ball and squeeze his shot underneath the Salaga keeper for the equalizer.

Ridgemont Town 1 – 0 Real Minanda
Ridgemont began their season with a lackluster performance against Real Minanda. Both sides still looked like they were in holiday mode and neither appeared capable of winning the game. This however changed when Manuel Reina was scythed down in the Minanda box and substitute attacker Tom Smith came on to score the subsequent penalty. The solitary spot kick was enough to give Ridgemont the points and start their season with a win. Minanda will feel aggrieved, however can have no arguments in regards to the manner in which the penalty was conceded.

Athletic Khaldoon 3 – 2 Belle-Isle on Sea
Gavin Dickinson’s return to the Una Serie in charge of Belle-Isle looked to be going swimmingly when new attacker David Pallister gave the side the lead in only the first minute of the day. Pallister’s goal was the first of their season and the quickest scored on the day. Pallister then added a second in the 24th minute and the away side looked to be headed towards a comfortable debut win.
However their hopes were dashed minutes later when Nigel Speed’s speculative attempt took a deflection guiding the ball beyond the keeper. The goal sparked a comeback and before half time the game was tied at 2-2. Craig Jones beat the defence at the near post from a corner to equalize for the home side. The final stage of the comeback was complete in the 70th minute when Ruud Seedorf squeezed the ball between two defenders for Miguel Caicedo who rounded the keeper and scored in an empty net.

So. It's not like we shouldn't have been able to see this coming, but for whatever reason, we didn't. As much fun as it would have been to relax and get this done after the World Cup qualifiers, circumstances make this a better idea--not the least of them being a natural desire to know which teams are currently doing well.

As far as international action goes, well, Trecelunas FC made the TQCC quarterfinals and everything else just pales in comparison (translated: we're lazy). Sabas Melendez officially confirmed his retirement, making way for Amílcar Ruiberriz. He so far has proved slower to react than his predecessor (though who isn't?), preferring instead to mess with the lineups midweek.

With Cirino Icaza behind the Arcrés Millos bench, though, the top two teams were led by managers with a combined total of one seasons' experience. The players' ability turned out to matter more, however, as Millos took their second title in three seasons. Perhaps this is a warning to Cristian Delgado not to tinker too heavily with the national team. Perhaps not.

It was a close race, of course, and Mapabore Juventud were only two points out in third. Those three teams seemed a cut above the rest of the league from start to finish, but this is likely transient. Different eras of dominance rotate in and out over time, you know...and one of them has come to a very ugly, very abrupt stop. San Pablo were relegated after finishing bottom yet again. This time around, fatigue might have been more of a concern. If the calculations I've been told to list are correct, this message is actually coming from the future--April 2038, to be precise. Aguazul is due to play its last qualifier in the next week, and I'd love to tell you who wins the next two games, but I've been ordered not to.

Still, no one could have seen this coming, even with really far-out time dilation. They won five titles and there's still only been twelve seasons played. Nevertheless, the top division survived without its biggest team; it'll be fine. As for the city itself, they'll still have a club in the top flight--Ojedo Cerro could afford to relax (but not too much--they only led the combined tables by one point over AC Mineros in the end.)

It appears as if we've published prematurely, but that's what you get from screwing with the space-time continuum. Moving on...Mineros lost 1-0 to Unión de Ciudagua. And, because we won't rest until we've found every possible permutation of abbreviations, Blén CA won division three in front of ICD Villago (don't ask). They lost 2-1 to 2 de abril. Which it might be now. Or so.

Or not, of course.
