The largest cavalry charge in Countesian history took place during the Relief of Nordveste in the final months of the War of Unification (1819–1820).

At the time, the Citadel of Nordveste, the ancestral seat of Count Hans Gothenthal, had spent most of the war under Telsian siege whilst its lord was away campaigning across the Counties. The conflict itself had become a brutal war of attrition, with neither side capable of delivering a decisive blow. By the latter stages of the war, however, the coalition had gradually forced the Telsians back far enough to create an opportunity to relieve the fortress.

Seizing the moment to retake his seat and deal a crushing blow to the increasingly strained Telsian war effort, Hans Gothenthal assembled approximately 13,000 cavalry from across the coalition and advanced on Nordveste from the northeast. Under the cover of darkness, the relieving force approached the rear of the Telsian siege lines before launching its assault at first light. The resulting attack became the largest cavalry charge ever conducted by Countesian forces.

Supported by sorties from the besieged garrison, the charge shattered the Telsian siege lines and routed the besieging army. Although it did not end the war outright, it played a critical role in forcing the Telsians to the negotiating table. The victory is widely regarded as the conflict's final decisive battle and remains one of the most celebrated moments in Countesian military history.

Although their experimental development initially resulted in a "zombie outbreak"-type plot in the roleplay of my old region, the first official appearance of one of my armed forces' more distinctive troop types was this unveiling on February 10th 2008. Due to the outbreak plot and deliberately misleading hints I'd been slipping the other players, surprisingly few foreign militaries proved interested in buying GBI-1s for their own use. I responded by developing the GBI-2... perhaps I'll add a post about them in the near future.

I'm currently exploring the notion of these soldiers developing full sapience over time and the first hints of that plotline are already seeded in my lore, if you know where to look.

*Constantine Malachite steps out onto the stage in front of a big presentation screen. He has become a figure of great respect over recent months and the hubbub of the audience dies down swiftly as he casts his gaze across them*

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to a new era!"

*The big presentation screen lights up, displaying a montage of footage of military operations*

"In these dangerous times, war and conflict are becoming increasingly common. Our own brave troops have just recently achieved a phenomenal success in Lazarastra and even now have to be prepared for more danger with threats rising from terrorist states like Gamiatianekan Idiokrahtia. Our armed forces are certainly brave and resourceful, ever ready to sacrifice themselves for the good of Rhanukhan, but they are still human beings... with human failings... families who will be devastated if they fall to the sniper's bullet... equipment that must be bought and wages that must be paid..."

*comical wink towards the accountants in the audience, a chuckle goes up*

"But, what if your soldiers and sailors and airmen weren't hampered by these problems? What if your personnel didn't need expensive body armour, because their skin was naturally bulletproof? What if they obeyed your every order and never asked for payment in return, no matter the task? And, what if your troops were capable of continually recruiting new colleagues in the field? Comrades who shared their ideals and followed the same orders and also never asked for anything in return?"

*Audience beginning to lean forward with interest*

"Where could you possibly hope to recruit such a force? This dream army?"

"I can tell you where!"

*Constantine pauses for dramatic effect, a couple of voices can be heard whispering "Where?" in the ensuing silence*

"GeneTech - Rhanukhan's leading genetic research concern - can now bring you..."

*footage cuts to GeneTech logo above the words "Project: Golden Crescent" and a cloud of dry ice swirls across the stage behind Constantine. The sound of marching feet can be heard getting louder*

"...the GBI-1!"

*Constantine steps aside with a flourish of his arm. From the swirling dry ice cloud a yellow, genderless, naked, humanoid figure with tough, reinforced, yet totally flexible skin steps forward. As the mist settles down the audience can see it is one of a hundred identical figures, brandishing heavy assault rifles and marching on the spot in perfect synchronicity.*

"The GeneTech Banana Infantryman - Type 1 is the future of war, ladies and gentlemen!"

*The audience erupts into thunderous applause, drowning out the continuing sound of the marching GBI-1s. Constantine stands upon the stage soaking it all up for a couple of minutes before gesturing for silence, with a single word he commands the GBI-1s to cease their march and come to attention.*

"The GBI-1 is superior to the standard human serviceman in every way. It can be trained for any profession in the army, navy, air fleet, or orbital defence force."

"We take great pride in our intense combat education and training programs."

*Footage of a parade ground, huge numbers of GBI-1s are marching and drilling in flawless formation*

"This group was brought up to current standards in just three days!"

*Murmurs of "Impossible!" and "Amazing!" can be heard from the audience*

"Its skin is as flexible as your own yet can resist intense heat or cold, severe impact damage... even..."

*Constantine produces a pistol from his inside pocket, causing security guards across the room to reach for their own weapons and swiftly position themselves in front of their charges. Constantine adopts a mock innocent expression, as if it had never occurred to him that his display would generate such a response. He then chuckles and points his weapon directly at the nearest GBI-1 and fires, hitting the yellow figure in the head and sending it sprawling.*

"...even bullets! How many of your personnel can make that boast? Hmm?"

*The floored GBI-1 stands and retakes its position among its comrades, a dark bruise showing on the side of its smooth head. The audience applauds again.*

"A new adult GBI-1 can be grown from scratch - thanks to our patented growth acceleration process - in just four weeks, ladies and gentlemen, and you'll find they are totally obedient, taking any order without question. Yet, unlike a machine, the GBI-1 maintains a level of creative thought similar to that of your current, old-fashioned, human serviceman!"

*The screen shows the interior of a huge GeneTech factory, tanks containing embryonic GBI-1s fill the walls, maturing yellow figures can also be observed undergoing rigorous training to ensure peak physical development before being given specific training appropriate to their future function within the military. Inspectors in white lab coats are seen everywhere, ensuring the process runs smoothly.*

"But this isn't the only way to fill your ranks with GBI-1s, ladies and gentlemen - oh no! Once your initial order of GBI-1s arrives, some of you may be lucky enough to find you never need to place another order again!"

*The audience, particularly the accountants, perks up at this suggestion*

"One of the GBI-1's most innovative features is its ability to pass its own genetic structure into a regular human target, usually through a bite although there is also a secondary delivery system available."

*At this cue the GBI-1s on stage all grin, exposing rows of razor sharp teeth. The screen begins to show an animated diagram of the transfer process.*

"Contained in the salivary glands of the GBI-1 is a complex organic chemical we call CBV301, developed by our head scientist, Professor Beatrice Wardrobe - who sadly can't be with us tonight - which shares many genetic traits with the GBI-1 itself. Once admitted into the bloodstream of a victim, it swiftly attacks the nervous system and progresses rapidly to the brain where it erases the higher brain functions, supplanting them with a copy of the GBI-1's current instructions and training. Et voila - instant loyal new trooper! Over the course of the following 24 hours the CBV301 reworks the rest of its target's body, enhancing bone, muscle, organs, and of course, the signature yellow skin - creating a brand new GBI-1! Our free gift to you - GeneTech's valued customer!"

"And speaking of customers, it gives me great pleasure to announce that the first batch of GBI-1s is, as I speak, being shipped to army bases in Rhanukhan and the new colony of Lazarastra! One million, seven hundred thousand units are boarding Aerocarriers and APCs and preparing for their first missions - defending your freedom, your families... and your bank balance!"

*audience laughs and erupts into a standing ovation. Constantine nods at the lead GBI-1 and the squad begins marching on the spot again, adding to the thunderous applause as Malachite Evolving Enterprises' chairman opens his arms wide and receives the adulation*

The Special Aerial Combat Regiment "Divine Tigers" is a fighter unit consisting of personnel and fighter aircraft from both the National People's Air Force and the National People's Navy Air Force. Established on January 11, 2037, SACR is unique not only because it has pilots and planes from two different service branches but also because it directly-reports to the Central Military Commission. Tasked with conducting various classified air operations, the unit consists of highly-experienced battle-hardened exceptional fighter aces from both NPAF and NPNAF. The CMC handpicks 24 extraordinary battle-experienced fighter pilots from NPAF and NPNAF, each batch of 24 fighter aces are assigned to the unit for five years before returning to the fighter units they belong to.

A J-42BH gen. 6 carrier-borne stealth fighter from the National People's Navy Air Force, assigned to the Special Aerial Combat Regiment, conducting arctic air-policing just off the coast of the city of Wales in the Socialist Federal Republic of Alaska, along the border between Alaska and the Russian Federation in the Bering Strait, on February 17, 2041. Under the auspices of Huaxia, the Bering Strait has become an extremely important sea-lane not just for Huaxia but for international shipping as well, but because relations between Alaska and Russia are sour, Huaxia has been responsible for patrolling the Bering Strait and escorting all ships transiting across the strait while using its friendship with both Alaska and Russia to prevent the two from starting a conflict in the area.

Since its inception, the Special Aerial Combat Regiment has no standardized aircraft since the CMC picks pilots from different fighter units in the National People's Air Force and the National People's Navy Air Force to serve in the unit, but all planes would be temporarily decorated with "blood scars" on the rear in the form of red dashes blocking out any unit decals. The number of marks depends on how much aerial kills a pilot had scored prior to being assigned to the unit: One dash means eight-to-ten aerial kills, two dashes represent eleven-to-fifteen aerial kills, and three dashes denote sixteen or more aerial kills. The unit is assigned to various covert operations of clandestine nature. It is speculated that SACR is mainly tasked with circumventing enemy rear-lines and performing long-range strikes under classified nature. It is also possible that the unit might be tasked with escorting any fixed-wing VIP transport airliner from the 34th Transport Aviation Division of the NPAF that is carrying the national collective leadership while flying somewhere across Asia and the Pacific, however this is probably unlikely since SACR is constantly mobilized for operations. There are also rumors that any batch of 24 ace pilots that are temporarily assigned to the unit are sometimes used for collecting advanced flight combat data for aerial-warfare combat revision-&-improvement research by conducting mock dogfights against each other.

Ever since its formation, any ace pilot who is temporarily assigned to the Special Aerial Combat Regiment is commonly nicknamed "Divine Tiger". Another common nickname for an ace pilot serving in the unit is "Eagle Hunter". The unit is garrisoned at Sungezhuang Airbase in Jizhou District, Tianjin.

GBI-2 (GeneTech Banana Infantryman - Type 2) operatives, created as part of Constantine Malachite's schemes during the Worlds War, have the same enhanced abilities as their GBI-1 compatriots (namely increased strength, agility, endurance, resistance to extremes of environmental conditions, g-force and impact damage, and bulletproof skin), but are completely sapient and appear human to casual observation.

Following the end of the Worlds War in 2008CE (11ε4AU), a number of these enhanced individuals have lived in secret among the general population (some of them, such as Rhanukhan State News Network's Sophie Futon, are actually quite famous - it would undoubtedly be quite the scandal if they were discovered). The only records of their numbers and identities were on the Flying Island of Lehpuhrta, which famously disappeared in the immediate aftermath of the extraterrestrial Symyano invasion. The government is not pleased with the notion of such powerful individuals being at large with unknown motives and allegiances.

Some who have since presented themselves to the Rhanukhani government have been assigned to the Workers' Champions - a unit of sanctioned GBI-2 special operatives who employ cutting-edge equipment developed from Symyano technology. Their enhanced abilities have plenty of applications, and their uniforms themed after the flag make them ideal propaganda icons. Camouflage is for cowards - on the battlefield, the Workers' Champions are the unbeatable, unmissable brand ambassadors for the Rhanukhani regime. Every Champion is accompanied by an armoured AI hover-drone continuously blasting a high-tempo, inspiring version of the national anthem - rich with the iconic Dhunhorns and synthetic beats - serving as their personal hype-crew, disorienting enemies, and pumping up the local populace. Anybody expecting standard military jargon is in for a surprise. Having been supplied by a branch of Rhanukhan's largest commercial concern - Malachite Evolving Enterprises - corporate buzzwords and slogans are a key element of GBI-2 training, resulting in battle-cries of "Invest in your future - surrender now!" or "This sector is under new management!"

These heroes are a very public expression of the cult of personality that has come to surround His Resplendence, the Supreme Chairman, and the citizens love them. Murals and statues are common, always depicting the Champions in heroic poses - propelling themselves into the sky or holding up collapsing mine shafts - with the national motto, "Our hands toil that our hearts may dance!" painted in glowing, reflective orange letters beneath them. Movies and TV shows featuring their fictionalised adventures and missions are widely enjoyed, and children play with action figures of their favourite members of the team.

Their true identities are classified, but there is popular speculation that their commanding officer, codenamed "The COO of Victory", is Jennifer Footstool - a former GBI-2 Lehpuhrtan special agent and decorated hero of the Worlds War. Her flowing red hair is highly distinctive and well-remembered from the widely-televised award ceremony that followed the weeks-long mission in Glerica from which only she and fellow agent, David Anvil, returned alive, and even that had been a close thing - badly injured by an alien weapon in the final stages of their mission, she only returned through David's quick-thinking and courageous actions. Other members of the Workers' Champions include the heavies, "Overtime" and "Gridlock"; "Quota" the sniper; "Optimiser" the tactician and hype-drone co-ordinator; and "Break-Even" the point-man.

The commander of the Workers' Champions, "The COO of Victory". As with all members of the unit, her true identity is classified, but it is widely believed that she is Jennifer Footstool - a former GBI-2 Lehpuhrtan special agent and decorated hero of the Worlds War.

David Anvil's GBI-2 status is known to the government - he was, after all, a prominent hero during the war - but the fact that he's the secretive costumed adventurer known as The Artisan is not. He's not a member of the Workers' Champions because he provides a greater service to the nation by running the enormous corporation, Malachite Evolving Enterprises, having inherited the position of CEO in the aftermath of Constantine Malachite's spectacular disappearance at the end of the Worlds War. The hand of The Artisan reaches where the long arm of the law cannot and brings justice to those who might otherwise avoid it, making him popular with the general citizenry, even if the authorities have reason to disapprove of him.

GBI-2s naturally burn calories at an extraordinary rate and anybody buying unusual quantities of food over a prolonged period of time without an apparent reason, such as running a restaurant, will obviously come to the attention of the authorities. David Anvil uses the resources of Malachite Evolving Enterprises to provide for his compatriots, covering for the activity with a variety of charitable programs. As such, he is one of the few people who does know the identities of many of the rogue GBI-2s in Rhanukhan.

As the commander of the Workers' Champions, Jennifer Footstool is tasked with bringing in such rogue GBI-2s. A secret she keeps from her comrades is that she once successfully cornered The Artisan, forcing him to resort to divulging his identity to her in the hope that their shared past would save his neck - a gamble that ultimately paid off. Her initial anger that such a long-standing trusted friend had been playing her for a fool couldn't hold before the strength of their extant relationship, forged in the fires of the Worlds War. When Jennifer unmasked The Artisan and saw David's face, she wasn't looking at a vigilante - she was looking at the man who refused to let her die when their entire world was burning. The man she had been ordered to hunt was the only reason she was still breathing.

To this day The Artisan always seems to be inexplicably one step ahead of his pursuers in the Workers' Champions, outwitting and outmanoeuvring his foes. In truth, Jennifer covers for him. She deliberately misdirects her squad, claiming The Artisan escaped into the sewers, or faking body-cam footage using advanced deepfakes. She has become David’s silent guardian within the state machine - deliberately sabotaging her own investigations, altering tactical reports, and feeding him classified information.

Perhaps a little hypocritically, His Resplendence, the Supreme Chairman, has himself secretly undergone the GBI-2 process (way back in 2009CE / 11ε5AU). Doubtless something will happen one day that causes this to be revealed to the public - how will the news go down? Given that GeneTech is a part of Malachite Evolving Enterprises, David Anvil is privy to this information, so it will likely provide him some leverage if the discovery of his own double life, or Jennifer's activities on his behalf, become a source of trouble.

2338 was nicknamed the "Year of the Gritted Teeth" within Koragrad, because it saw the climax of the infamous Army-Navy interservice rivalry. Stemming from years of conflict over funding, influence, and most importantly, the dissolution of the Orbital Defense Fleet, the rivalry almost saw a full-blown civil war between the services. The year was christened as the "Year of the Gritted Teeth" by Charles Paprikav, minister for internal security, who noticed the contrast between how the services acted when in the presence of the Grand Marshal and when they were alone. In the span of 11 months, 812 people died - more than the total casualties of 5 years of unrest on the planet of Dobrikan.

The name originates from a convoluted attempt to figure out who came up with the "rods from god" orbital bombardment doctrine.
Lacking historical records, the designers chose simply to attribute the idea to the entirety of the USA, until eventually scaling down to simply the founder.

The trigger for the sudden flaring up of the rivalry was the Grand Marshal's plan to dissolve the Orbital Fleet Command, a group of vessels designed for atmospheric bombardment and planetary defense, and place the vessels either under the command of the army (for orbital bombardment and coordination of defenses) or the navy (for defending planets from space). Whilst high command discussed both options, the two factions did their best to outwit one another and prove that they were more capable than their opponent. This involved smear campaigns, fabricated enemies (to send their rivals on a wild goose chase), and even a series of assassinations and murders to hurt their rivals' reputation.

The final straw for the Grand Marshal was the Washington Skirmish: a battle between naval troops and army boarders on board the KNS Washington, who both sought to seize the pride of the orbital fleet to use as leverage. 128 people died in the fighting, and 16 instigators were arrested by the intelligence services afterwards. In the end, the Grand Marshal chose to give up on his plans for the dissolution of the Orbital Fleet Command, instead of causing more conflict by awarding the fleet to one group or another; in the end, the whole campaign was for nothing. It did, however, expose the sheer power the military holds over Koragradian society, as there were no checks or balances in place to prevent such drastic actions being taken. Ironically, the Grand Marshal was actually quite please when he learned of the scope of the conflict. After all, if the armed forces were this brutal to one another, one can only imagine how brutally they would treat an invader.

The "Jumping Hefei Experiment" is a conspiracy theory that revolves around a Huaxian warship unintentionally teleporting as part of a covert weapons experiment done by the National People's Navy. The story first appeared in 2046 from letters supposedly written by a veteran who had partaken in the experiment. The Jumping Hefei Experiment is widely seen as nothing but a hoax; the Central Military Commission has stated that no such experiment was ever conducted and that the alleged claims violate all known laws of physics.

According to the letters, the writer is said to have been a shaoxiao (lieutenant-commander) in the Navy who partook in what he refers to as the "Jumping Hefei Experiment". In this experiment, the writer claimed the Type 052D guided-missile destroyer Hefei served as a testbed for the testing of an experimental fusion-powered particle beam cannon sometime around November 22, 2035.

The clandestine experiment was allegedly conducted by the National People's Navy with scientists, engineers and technicians from the 902 Institute of Nuclear Physics and Chemistry of the Huaxia Academy of Engineering Physics overseeing the project. The experimental fusion-powered particle beam cannon, referred to in the letters as "Hou Yi", was designed to act as a hyper-sophisticated bleeding-edge direct-energy weapon capable of eliminating any targets, such as fighter jets, drone swarms, hypersonic missiles, and even satellites in orbit, by accelerating highly-dense superheavy flerovium nuclei at near-light speed using a highly-focused superheated ionized particle-beam that would deliver an immense amount of momentum and both kinetic and thermal energy upon impact. According to the writer, a high-frequency electromagnetic-wave Z-pinch inertial-confinement-fusion generator, specifically one custom-made by Huaxia National Nuclear Corporation for the experimental weapon, was utilized for powering the particle beam cannon. During the testing of the weapon, the particle beam cannon was able to successfully fire its particle-beam, but in just 0.05 seconds after firing, the warship had instantaneously disappeared from the area in a bright flash of blue light. The airborne target, a captured ex-USAF F-22A aircraft and flying war trophy that was converted into a remote-controlled target drone, was quickly obliterated as the superheated ionized particle-beam of highly-dense superheavy flerovium nuclei violently destroyed the aircraft with devastating kinetic, thermal and mechanical effects, producing a pulse of electromagnetic radiation that could scramble electronics. The writer claimed that the ship remained gone for two minutes before ultimately reappearing back to the site it had originally occupied. According to the letters, the personnel onboard Hefei claimed to have been teleported to the Arctic Ocean the moment they fired the experimental weapon and that they were in the Arctic for only a quarter of a minute before teleporting back despite the ship having been gone for two minutes. The letters also add the exterior of the ship was found to have a dangerously-high level of radiation yet none of the crewmembers had any dangerous radiation on them. The experimental weapon, despite having been successful in firing a particle-beam, was found to be destroyed with its superconducting particle-accelerator having been melted and fused together into a radioactive metal slab, while the high-frequency electromagnetic-wave Z-pinch inertial-confinement-fusion generator was discovered to have been destroyed as well. Like with the experimental fusion-powered particle beam cannon, the entire reactor had melted and cooled into a radioactive metal slab, however unlike the experimental weapon, the reactor was found fully frozen with a temperature of around -121.5°C, making it even colder than dry ice.

The Central Military Commission has denied the existence of the experiment, calling it a "mere hoax". To prove to the public the falseness of the conspiracy, the ship's log for Hefei from November 18 to 25 of 2035 was publicly released on May 15, 2047, which showed that the warship was partaking in a naval patrol in the Gulf of Aden and thus the experiment could not of happen during that time.

The Type 052D guided-missile destroyer Hefei, having been commissioned into service on December 12, 2015, was decommissioned on October 8, 2039 and sunk by various supersonic and hypersonic AShMs during a naval exercise in the Yellow Sea on August 16, 2043. A Type 058B nuclear-powered guided-missile destroyer named Hefei would enter service with the National People's Navy on March 21, 2043. Many variations of the hoax still circulate in fringe online communities from time to time, including claims of the ship going through a wormhole and interacting with extra-terrestrial beings from other planets, as well as claims of the ship going back in time to the Cambrian period and making contact with a primordial god-like transcendental extragalactic alien civilization.

As per Huaxia's military rank system, new recruits of the National People's Armed Forces have no military ranks before their boot camp is completed, thus they are only awarded the rank of Liebing (Private) after they have graduated from the boot camp. Enlistees serve a mandatory two-year term, where they are referred to as Yiwubing (义务兵), and during this period, they are considered conscripts regardless of whether they were drafted or joined voluntarily. In fact, in Huaxia, mandatory military service exists in theory but in practice it is not actively enforced due to military service being quite popular in Huaxia, along with the nation having a massive population.

Surviving true feudal castles are built for Tusi, the hereditary chiefdom leaders of self-governing ethnic minorities groups in Southwestern China during the Ming dynasty. Most Tusi rules were abolished by mid-Qing dynasty. In southern China, especially Fujian and Guangdong province, a type of fortified communal residence built by the Hakka people known as Hakka walled villages can be found. These are large multi-family communal living structure that were built by the immigrant Hakkas for protection in the event of clan wars with other Chinese clan groups. Fortified private residences built by wealthy landowning families can be found throughout China, generally built to protect from threats of bandits or periods of civil unrests. That being said, rather than having castles like Europe, China instead commonly has heavily-fortified cities protected by highly-massive extremely-thick defensive-walls called chengqiang which makes European castle-walls look tiny and weak in comparison. In addition to walls, Chinese city defenses also included fortified towers and gates, as well as moats and ramparts around the walls.
