Some good results for our players this week, once again determining the top 3 of the VICC National Rankings...

1VGM Charli ESTERSON-RELANCA (J)2560
2VGM Lika BEROSA2558
3VGM Lando POWERS2558

It is extremely close at the top for whoever is Number 1! ESTERSON-RELANCA already set the record last week, becoming the first Junior to be #1 in Vonum, and she once again reclaims the top...

HULDENBERG WINS FIRST CHOPPYHAUSENIAN GCC MATCH

Zynusgrad - The second event of the Multiversal Chess Championship’s second season is nearing its end. Eleven out of the thirteen matches at the Grand Casaran of Chess in Zynusgrad, Paradystopia are played and Prof. James Huldenberg has just claimed himself the internal Choppyhausenian title by winning against fellow countrywoman and MCC player Cassandra Covert.

Huldenberg, who was playing with the white pieces, has established himself as the strongest Choppyhausenian competitor since the end of the South Newlandian Classical Chess Cup in Newport. He came into the match against Covert after his first loss of the tournament against Ziggy Stardust (MIR). That didn’t seem to bother the professor in the slightest, however, as he began the game with a confident opening.

Cassandra Covert, who is widely regarded as Choppyhausen’s strongest chess prodigy at only 14 years old, seemed to struggle with Huldenberg’s unconventional opening, leading to a quickly growing time deficit in the professor’s favor. In the end, this time deficit would cost her the match, losing the first international Choppyhausenian matchup after 96 moves.

Choppyhausen’s third competitor in Zynusgrad, Philomena Keil, had a rather mixed performance so far, ranking in the middle of the table with 5.5 points, following two losses with the black pieces since the last rest day.

P Standings after Round 11 Pld W D L Pts
1 Johnny B. Goode (MIR) 11 6 5 0 8.5
2 Ziggy Stardust (MIR) 11 6 4 1 8
3 Julia Willis (KYP) 11 7 1 3 7.5
Prof. James Huldenberg (CPH) 11 5 5 1 7.5
5 Malik Robertson (PDT) 11 4 6 1 7
...
Warren Doyle (STI) 11 5 4 2 7
11 Cassandra Covert (CPH) 11 5 3 3 6.5
Eleanor Rigby (MIR) 11 6 1 4 6.5
Eveline Valeria Annalise Tieu Xuan Ngoc (VEZ) 11 4 5 2 6.5
...
22 Charli Esterson-Relanca (VON) 11 4 3 4 5.5
Juan Salazar Bokerto (HNT) 11 3 5 3 5.5
Philomena Keil (CPH) 11 4 3 4 5.5
Stijn van Dijk (KYP) 11 3 5 3 5.5
...

In the 12th round, Prof. James Huldenberg will now play against home favorite Malik Robertson (Paradystopia, 5th, [4/6/1]) with the black pieces. Two wins in his last two matches are neccessary for Huldenberg to maintain the chance of him winning the tournament. This would, however, require currently unbeaten first placed Johnny B. Goode (MIR) to lose his next two matches... Cassandra Covert has the white pieces in her next match against Eveline Valeria Annalise Tieu Xuan Ngoc (Valentine Z, 11th, [4/5/2]) and Philomena Keil will face Juan Salazar Bokerto (Hintuwan, 22nd, [3/5/2].

Robertson v Huldenberg • Covert v Ngoc • Keil v Bokerto

OOC: This was originally planned to be posted after round 5, but travel got in the way. ICly, it was still posted after round 5. Unfortunately, these charts aren't accessible on the publicly-facing MESH spreadsheet, because I'm trying to add player lookup and copying over anything more will crash the public sheet.

What the hell is up with the MESH ratings?
Image
MESH ratings of the top 20 after round 5. Purple is Vielfaltig, orange-brown MIR, gray Paradystopia, teal Choppyhausen, dark green KP, black STI, light green Gyaromia, blue TJUN-ia

Image
Same color scheme. MESH ratings zoomed in on #5-#16, showing the gaps between them more clearly.

The gap between 5th and 16th is all of 22 Elo, and a lot of top 20 players are facing one another in the next round. Miri Robertson [2630 (#4)] versus Johnny B. Goode [2648 (#2)] takes top board, but Prof. James Huldenburg [2616 (#7)] versus Michael Radley [2605 (#14)] and Ziggy Stardust [2606 (#12)] versus Cassandra Covert [2614 (#8)] follow immediately after, with Stepon Kyrill [2610 (#11)] taking on Julia Willis [2614 (#9)] following slightly lower down on board 5. For the rest of the top 10, Eleanor Rigby [2645 (#3)] and Brian Bowman [2623 (#5)] are having slightly worse tournaments, so their round 6 opponents aren't ranked as high (Kepe Shakirullah Sadakan [2502 (#73)] for Rigby and Delbin Kasekende Sr [2511 (#64)] for Bowman), while Marielle Figueroa is facing the underrated Eveline Valeria Annalise Tieu Xuan Ngoc [2497 (#76)], who has gained 48 Elo in four rounds and shows no signs of stopping. The two Vielfaltigians in the top 10, Noemi Etienne [2652 (#1)] and Felix Tremblay [2619 (#6)] are the only top 10 players not participating in this GCC.

The top is extremely close. At five separate points in the top 20, players are separated by less than one Elo. From largest to smallest gap, Sameul Salucci [2605.99 (#13)] holds a 0.89-point lead over Michael Radley [2605.10 (#14)], Marielle FIgueroa [2611.05 (#10)] holds a 0.70-point lead over her compatriot Stepon Kyrill [2610.35 (#11)], the Choppyhausenian Cassandra Covert [2614.12 (#8)] leads Julia Willis of the Kytler Peninsulae [2613.75 (#9)] by 0.48 points (if that seems weird, it's because of rounding), Sameul Salucci is back but this time he trails Ziggy Stardust [2606.40 (#12)] by 0.41 Elo, and Istvan Barany [2594.97 (#17)] leads Ruby Tuesday [2594.90 (#18)] by a miniscule 0.07 points.

And all of this analysis will have been flipped on its head by tomorrow.

Congratulations to the winner of the Grand Casaran, Ziggy Stardust, as well as Prof. James Huldenberg, who also secures a spot in the World Chess Championship Qualifier. Thank you to everyone for participating!

Provided due to a request. Excuse the name abbreviations and general vibe, I am working within the limitations of pretty old software. Also, you don't have to care about any of this.

A rank update will be taking place here as soon as I manage to do it. The next tournament of the MCC will be the GCC Masters and GCC Open, taking place concurrently in June. In the meantime, ECC13 will take place, which will have signups in a thread of its own soon.

Welcome to the 1st MCC Masters and MCC Open in Waldstein, Katzeburg!

Format:
The MCC Masters and Open are a pair of chess tournaments, contested by individual players. The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, with an additional 30 minutes added after 40 moves, plus a 30 second increment added for every move from the start). For more information on the game of chess, here is the Wikipedia article on chess. Chess knowledge is absolutely not required for RPing this tournament, though.

In the MCC Masters, ten players will play a round-robin event, in which every player plays every other player once. The player with the most points will be the Champion of the MCC Masters. In the MCC Open, 15 players will play 9 rounds according to a Casaran/Swiss system. The player scoring the most points will be the champion of the MCC Open.
The winners of both tournaments will earn the right to play in the World Chess Championship Qualifier.

Tiebreakers:
In the MCC Open, ties on points will be broken by Buchholz excluding the lowest, then total Buchholz, to reward players that have faced tougher paths. In the MCC Masters, a tie for first will result in Rapid Chess Tiebreaks, followed by Blitz and Armageddon if needed.

If you have already posted Player Overviews for the MCC, and nothing has materially changed, you do not have to re-post the same Overview; your Player Overview from the SN3C or GCC will continue to count. You are still invited to post a new Overview if you have new information, and you’re also welcome to post a roleplay before the first scorination!

RP Information:
You may now start posting in this thread. It is recommended, although not required, that you post a Player Overview for your players to let other roleplayers know a little more about what they’re going up against. You can go into further detail about whatever you want (ages, heritage, club team (if any), play style, favourite openings etc. etc.). Otherwise, you can Roleplay about whatever you like; it doesn’t have to be chess, either.

Roleplays will always count for both tournaments.

You are also advised to include a Roleplay permissions box in your roster post. An example may look like this:
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes/No
Godmod game events: Yes/No
Godmod other events: Yes/No

This can reduce conflicts between you and your opponent when you both want to RP the same match, but the best plan to do that remains to message your opponent on discord or by telegram. Don’t be intimated by the amount of opponents it may seem like you need to consider simultaneously - you only need to worry about the games you actually want to talk about in-depth.

Otherwise, I, as the host of this competition, ask you to not to inflict any damage to Katzeburgian people or property without talking to Katzeburg first.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a telegram or message me on discord - I know some of this stuff is confusing, so please ask if anything is unclear!

Welcome to Katzeburg!

Katzeburg is an Esportivan island nation located to the south east of South Newlandia and a population of approximately 39 million. The country has exploded onto the international sporting stage in recent years, with a growing footprint in chess as the Ynysgard Chess Club won Elephant Chess Cup X and Elephant Chess Cup XI as Katzeburgian representatives.

Visitors of all types are welcome to visit Katzeburg, with strong laws in support of LGBTQ+ rights and a multicultural makeup. Travellers who do not often get on the beers may find local customs a little challenging, as the average Katzeburgian loves to put down a few no matter the occasion - this is particularly evident during sporting matches (and even when it comes to watching chess!), where alcohol consumption is generally an expectation for those watching, but Katzeburgians do appreciate that those who can't have a few are also more than welcome and there is no pressure put on visiting tourists to participate.

Waldstein

Image

Waldstein is located in North-West Katzeburg and is the second largest city in the region after Lowport - an hour's drive south along the River Wald from Lowport. With a population of just over 110,000, Waldstein is one of the most preserved historical cities in Katzeburg, with large patches of the city surviving the Revolution relatively untouched.

The earliest known settlement in Waldstein existed at least from BK1300 onwards, with Kaiser Aythal the Ancient invading a settlement along the River Wald named 'Waldstyn' during his campaign to claim the Katzeburgian throne.

By BK350, Waldstein was one of the largest cities in Katzeburg, spurred on by tourist barins, but unrest would begin to grow within the working class in Waldstein as to the clear difference in quality of life between the visiting wealthy and the grunts on the ground. No longer able to afford to live in the city, much of the working class would dissipate to other towns in the region, leaving to the city stagnating for the final two hundred years of pre-revolution Katzeburg.

But today Waldstein remains a popular tourist destination for those looking to see what high-society life was like for Katzeburgians prior to the Revolution as well as developing into one the nation's most culturally diverse spots.

For those looking for something a little more exciting - Waldstein has a diverse sporting culture which has developed in recent years. In football, the city is represented by one team in the Katzeburgian National League - Rapid Waldstein - which is currently competing in the top flight's seventh season.

But the city is arguably most famous for its motorsports background, hosting the only Federation of Automobile Racing for Katzeburg (FARK) approved race-course in the nation with its Waldstein City Circuit. The track hosts the Katzeburgian Qualifier for new entrants to the World Grand Prix Championship and was won by Waldstein local and WGPC race winner Ron Sommer in its most recent edition. Those looking to follow the track when not in use can do so by following the walking signs which stretch through the city.

The Venue - Waldstein Forum

The MCC Masters and MCC Open will take place in the historic Waldstein Forum - one of the most well-known performing venues in the country, with popular singer-songwriter William Gooseman stating in BK15 that 'you have only made it as a musician in Katzeburg once you take the stage at the Waldstein Forum.'

The venue, which has been in consistent operation since BK412, is a grand three-storey theatre and conference hall in the heart of the city centre which can provide capacity for up to 3,000 people. The MCC Open will take place in the wider conference centre part of the complex, while the MCC Masters is scheduled to take place in the theatre.

From the Waldstein Forum, it is less than five minutes walking distance to the hotels which have been arranged for competitors to stay at during the event, and as part of all competitor welcome packs provided upon arrival, bookings have been made with at one of the city's five restaurants which hold at least one Blue Star - a Katzeburgian culinary rating which is highly regarded amongst restaurateurs - should they wish to take them up during their stay.

Getting Here

Getting around Katzeburg is sadly eaiser said than done, with the nation still developing in the wake of the Katzeburgian Revolution some 25 years earlier. North Katzeburg has strong rail links stretching from Coalbrook to Windorf, and those heading to Waldstein for the event will most likely need to travel to Inverhaven via the railway before taking a twice-daily KatzeBus service from the city to Waldstein to attend should they not have a care of their own to utilise.

Those touching down in the country will more often land at the Katzestadt International Airport in the country's capital - the only international airport in Katzeburg - and a free and quick public shuttle service runs travellers from the airport to the city centre and financial district on a regular 15-minute basis, with Katzestadt Central Station allowing trips via train to the remainder of North Katzeburg.

But outside of chess, there is plenty to see in Katzeburg, and there should be something for everyone - South of capital city Katzestadt lies the affluent town of Barenwold and a wide range of agricultural heartlands, with the next major city to the south being Deerhaven, sitting on the southern coast of the nation.

Travelers going east will find the rich forests of the Campbellnia National Park, where you could have the chance of spotting a rare blue cat, while those going west from Katzestadt (or south east from Waldstein) are likely to see Mount Mercer - the largest peak in the nation and where the country's winter sports are based. Of interest to chess fanatics will be the small island of Dragoonspiel up in the north west of the country - now famed as the stomping grounds of the Ynysgard Chess Club, champions of Elephant Chess Cup X and XI, and the most notable thing to come out of the island since its local 'delicacy' baked fish pie.

Check!: Two For The Price Of One

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jun 23, 2026 8:26 am

Hello and Welcome to both the MCC Masters and the MCC Open, coming to you from the Waldstein Forum in Waldstein, Katzeburg. After a 5th place finish at the ECC on Mars, the Jaguar Knights are back on their own as we head to another Esportivan nation for two tournaments for the price of one. The MCC have invited 10 of the best players in the game to compete in a round robin tournament called the Masters, while 15 more players duke it out in a 9-game Swiss tournament called the Open. This two-tiered structure has split our cohort apart, but with the winners of both tournaments getting guaranteed tickets to the World Chess Championship Qualifier, both of these tiers are expected to see fierce competition aacross the Waldstein Forum. But how are our 3 Jaguar Knights feeling about the format and where they stand

MCC MASTERS

Anne Christian-Warren
MCC Ranking: 10th
MCC S2 Record: 8-4-9
ECC13 Record: 6-4-2
Total Record: 14-8-11

Only dropping two games for her country certainly was a return to form for the Lesbian Pirate Queen, but she still felt that a spot in the ECC Top 4 just slipped away from the Knights towards the end. A great debate is now forming as to whether ACW should replace Tshering Gyeltshen on Board 1 and while she didn't want to get involved in that shit at all, many do see her as TJUN-ia's best player and the one that should be leading the charge. Funnilly enough, she will start this 10-player Guantlet against her compatriot Altamiranda in what is expected to be a great clash between the two best female players in TJUN-ian Chess.

Margarita Altamiranda
MCC Ranking: 19th
MCC S2 Record: 9-6-5
ECC13 Record: 2-6-4
Total Record: 11-12-9

Altamiranda's fairly middling overall record is mostly due to the ECC, where winning only 2 games all tournament has dented her standing in this regard. Still, everyone knows that she always likes to surprise you when you least expect it, and she will be hoping to do that once again against the very best in the game. Up first? ACW, an opportunity to finally get one over her compatriot...

MCC OPEN

Tshering Gyeltshen
MCC Ranking: 21st
MCC S2 Record: 8-5-7
ECC13 Record: 3-6-3
Total Record: 11-11-10

Because no more than two players from the same nation could compete in the Masters, the traditional "Captain" of the Jaguar Knights is forced to compete in the Open instead...which symbolises just how far his stock has fallen since he took over on Board 1. The fact that his position on Board 1 has been challenged and debated so openly hasn't exactly been good for his mental health, all things considered. But with Lam Chow-Cheung by his side, he enters Waldstein with renewed focus while also knowing that while the Open is "Tier 2", the prize is still the same. Up first in his battle to make the Qualifier? Adam Esteban, #78 from South Newlandia.

Gideon Irosaea
MCC Ranking: T-57th
MCC S2 Record: N/A
ECC13 Record: 4-5-3
Total Record: 4-5-3

Back to a support role for Irosaea, but everyone can tell he is getting better by the tournament...
1st: ECC4/5, NSSCRA13, RLWC22, IBS20, EBT3, EIHT2, ET20V
2nd: NSCF24/26, ARWC4, WC:TOTS, IBC34, IBS17, RUWC33/35, ECC6, EKT, WCoH52, T20WC18, CE43, EIHT4
3rd: ARWC3, IBC32/41, ECC3/7, ARWC6, ET20 4/6, ECT, RUWC37, WCoH56
NSSCRA
#07 Michael Stefan (S13 T1 Champ)/#64 Alfonso Mercado/#03 Maddison Riley-Jones (S10 T2 Champ)
#96 Alice Jepkosgei/#70 Gongming Gao [NCR]/#79 Axel Chase

WGPO: #11 Lane Carter/ #9 Batu Tüvshinbayar (WGP2 S5 Champion)
NSTT: 4 S-Titles/2 D-Titles

Rowena Sowards
World Ranking - 7

A former high-flying lawyer at national firm Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant, Rowena has had quite the sea change in the months which had gone by since her last appearance in the Multiversal Chess Championships. Still residing in Waldstein, Rowena has separated entirely from the Waldstein Chess Club, with the 29-year-old breaking off following an explosive confrontation with club leader Brian Bowman and events which transpired in Inverhaven following Katzeburg's elimination from Elephant Chess Cup XII.

Returning to the multiversal chess scene as one of the competitors in the MCC Masters, Rowena could be considered an early favourite due to the perceived home advantage of the event taking place in Waldstein, and her ruthless playing style giving her the free reign to zero in on any and all mistakes made by her opponents to exploit them to maximum effect. However, this often means she can take a little too long to make her move, leaving a fatal flaw in her game which opponents will often try to use to their advantage.

With a previous blunt manner of speaking and nature to quickly get aggressive often leading to confrontations that put Rowena well and truly in her element, events which led to her taking a break from the chess scene has gone some distance to sanding down those edges, with the Rowena of today more calm and collected with those she cares about. With the MCC Masters being the final event before the Katzeburgian Chess League gets underway after numerous delays, Rowena will be hoping a good showing here will warm her up to lead the Waldstein Warriors KCL side to a title.

Emilia Ziegler
World Ranking - 25

Emilia Ziegler, a schoolteacher at Ynysgard Primary School, has been instrumental in helping shape the Ynysgard Chess Club lift not just one, but two Elephant Chess Cup trophies. Originally picking up the game as a way to distract some of her more unruly students, Emilia found home in the chess club and quickly rose up the ranks to become an anchor to the team’s successes.

Arguably the most astute and knowledgeable of the game itself, Emilia moved up into the first board spot after Rhys Furst stepped down at the end of the tenth Elephant Chess Cup and has been instrumental in creating a more welcoming and inclusive culture at the club - taking full advantage of the explosion of interest in the sport in the wake of the victory and helping guide the club to a successful defence of their title in South Newlandia.

A very well-rounded player, Emilia often spends a lot of time thinking about her move and the next few ahead - often leaving opponents looking at the clock to see how much time she has left. It’s a strategy which keeps her well informed of the game going on, but has been her largest flaw to date, failing to take full advantage of the time available to her and losing more than a few times as a result of running out of time.

The MCC Open marks her return to the multiversal scene after events in Inverhaven which are best left unspoken. Having retreated back to Ynysgard for several months, this tournament does indeed mark the first time Emilia has stepped foot back on the mainland since that day in Inverhaven, and she'll be conscious not to let that impact her game play too much as she looks to return to the top 20 of the world rankings.

Mark Jensen
World Ranking - 26

The former Senior Vice President of Merger Operations for Medium-Size Enterprises and International Affairs at the Bank of Katzeburg, Mark Jensen was a rapidly rising star of Katzeburgian chess until he vanished from the scene following events immediately after the 12th Elephant Chess Cup. Growing up playing chess on the island of Dragoonspiel, Mark left the sport and his family behind when he opted to move to the mainland to pursue education, creating a long-standing and emotional rift between himself and his father - former Ynysgard Chess Club captain Rhys Furst.

Mark had managed to put the sport well behind him until a chance flight from South Newlandia to Katzeburg he was on gave him a major epiphany unlike anything he had ever experienced. Taking stock in his life, Mark left his high-paying corporate job for a simple life on the docks of Ynysgard. The chief financial officer for the town’s council, Mark has been making up for lost time ever since, and not just with his father.

Mark was the second in command for the Ynysgard club's defence of the Elephant Chess Cup, and the first individual winner of a MCC competition from Katzeburg but since taking time away from the scene he has seen his ranking drop down to be the lowest of the regularly competing Katzeburgians. But he's returned from arguably lower spots before in the past personally and professionally - and with the KCL finally rearing its head, a good showing on home turf could bode well to return to the lofty heights of the past.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Please absolutely go ahead, I know close to nothing about the notation and strategy of chess.
Godmod game events: Yes, but please feel free to chat through it with me over TG/Discord!
Godmod other events: Yes, but please feel free to chat through it with me over TG/Discord!

MCC Open and Masters - South Newlandian player overview

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes
Godmod game events: Please ask first
Godmod other events: Please ask first

Chess has a long history in South Newlandia, and used to be considered one of the most important sports of the country. Just a few decades ago, most children would learn at least the basic rules of the game; but in recent years, the popularity of chess has waned. With the Elephants seeing success in various other sports, especially baseball, chess has become increasingly unpopular, and the South Newlandian Chess League is no longer what it was, either. The South Newlandian players still hope to be competitive, but it increasingly seems like the Elephant Island is getting lapped over the board. The second MCC circuit has started about as poorly as the last one, with all South Newlandians appearing hopelessly overmatched. Even the Elephant Chess Cup, despite not being on home soil, had only more heartbreak to offer, with the Ellies falling at the final hurdle to get beat out by Eshialand, who used their comeback as the springboard to win the entire thing.

Adam Esteban, 35 [78th in World Chess Rankings]
Esteban is the most experienced chess player representing South Newlandia. He’s had a rough time on the board recently, with a pretty dismal MCC circuit that saw him drop well below the other top Newlandians, despite the fact that he’s usually their top option in Classical. Matter of fact, it’s less of a rough time and more of a rough half a decade that’s had him openly ponder retirement. He’s a relatively unassuming man that you might easily miss in a crowd, but still plays a rather aggressive style of chess, by the motto “the best defense is a good attack”. In the past, Classical has been his preferred time control, but given how that’s gone lately, that might not be true any longer.
His opening repertoire includes the Sicilian and the Queen’s Gambit Declined with the black pieces, while he has played all of 1. c4, d4, and e4 in the recent past with the white pieces. That said, he likely has worked on some new lines to bring into his game, as he often does.

Khanyisa van Lundi, 26 [35th in World Chess Rankings]
Khanyisa van Lundi was born with albinism, which means she’s often dressed quite unusually in an attempt to shield her skin and eyes from light exposure. Over the board, she’s struggled during the most recent MCC circuit, usually being better at rapid chess. Still, she might be the best South Newlandian on paper, and is the current national classical champion.
Her MO has always been to play fast, looking to put her opponent under pressure on the clock. Usually, this goes well enough for her, as she’s got quite good chess instincts; but it will also lead to mistakes on occasion. Her opening repertoire is more broad than that of most South Newlandians, but she usually opts for relatively safe lines.

Elani Jabulan, 33 [34th in World Chess Rankings]
Jabulan is another experienced player, having risen to the top of the national rankings when she was a teenager. Like van Lundi, her instinct and ability to calculate quickly sets her apart from other players, but she proved during the MCC circuit that she can also handle longer time controls; turning in the best results from the South Newlandian delegation despite a recent downturn in form. That’s also given her the opportunity to compete in the MCC Masters, although that’s partially due to a relatively low number of entries.
She has become known for dressing more formal than most chess players, so she’s probably hoping she won’t be hit by any penguin-spit-infused bishops during the tournament. In her youth, she was also considered a pioneer of using deep computer analysis to improve her game, and especially her opening repertoire. That’s also a quite varied one, as she likes to research her opponents and choose lines based on their weaknesses. If in doubt, she likes to play the Italian or Caro-Kann.

Eshialand Player Overview: MCC Open and Masters

Masters: Jamie CARTWRIGHT
Age: 20
Favorite Openings: London System (White), Scandinavian Defense (Black)
About: The youngest player to ever represent Eshialand in the ECC, he's quickly risen to become the strongest out of them. While Lazlo Herefur mistrusted his presence on the team off the get-go, mostly because his appearance was sponsored by Lazlo's least favorite content creator Danny Stehl, Jamie absolutely proved himself by being pivotal for the Owls' ECC XIII championship win.
Playstyle: What Jamie lacks in experience, he makes up for by throwing the opponent off of their experience and prep. Expect strange novelties right out of the opening if he comes to your board, and never keep your eye off the ball: he's studied lines far weirder than most others have. Jamie's specialty is rapid, not classical, so do expect him to often be up on the clock but not be quite as accurate in using this extra time.

Open: Jason SEVERN
Age: 35
Favorite Openings: Ruy Lopez (White), Sicilian Dragon (Black)
Bio: Jason has long been the poster child for Eshian chess. He was there from day 1 of the program, and has remained a strong voice for chess in Eshialand ever since. Now that he achieved the ECC win he'd been hoping for for over a decade, it was time to focus on individual success... but can he do it?
Playstyle: A vibrant attacking style that prioritizes beautiful combinations rather than brute force. Recently, focusing more on grinding out positional advantages against opponents who wouldn't just lie down and let him attack.

Open: Antonii GERASIMOV
Age: 22
Favorite Openings: Italian (White), Caro-Kann (Black)
About: The first Aleiravan-born player to represent Eshialand in international sporting competition since World Cup 90, he immediately found success with the Eshian ECC team, showing that the Sunshine Isle, too, has chess talent to provide. With classical being his specialty, he hopes to have even more success here at the MCC.
Playstyle: Has an elite ability to get into opponents' heads, the way playing the same few opponents for a decade trains you to do. He religiously studies every opponent before the game, and he's likely already figured you out the moment you play the first move. His strategic vision is his weak point, but he makes up for it by being able to exploit your specific tactical weaknesses.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes
Godmod game events: Yes
Godmod other events: Yes, but feel free to ask if it's something really crazy. Feel free to ask about anything, in fact, I love collaborating on things!

The Coalition of the Unwilling

Eshialand and classical chess mixed together like peanut butter and sour cream. While the rapid time control had always seen great success for Eshian chess players, classical had always been somewhere between mid and awful. Take the last SN3C, for example, where all three players crashed out in the group stage, none of them doing better than 2½/6. After that, the whole championship circuit didn’t really matter to any of the players anymore, and they sat out the Grand Casaran.

So what brought them here? The simple answer, of course, was Lazlo Herefur. The long answer, however, was slightly more complicated and requires a little bit of context.

Chess in Eshialand does primarily happen online. While in-person events are arranged, it can’t be denied just how much Zwischenzug.esh has done to increase chess’ reach, since anyone can pick up their phone or turn on their computer to play a couple of quick games. In-person chess events, in comparison, are rare and relatively underdeveloped. The nation sends its team to the ECC, but within the country there’s very little activity, because there simply isn’t that much of a reason for chess to be played in the real world.

Going hand-in-hand with this relative lack of in-person chess is a national preference for faster time controls. Playing classical chess is such a time sink that it doesn’t have a good position in Eshian chess society. Again, some classical events do exist, mostly in-person amongst the same small crowd who’d been playing since before the Internet existed, but by far rapid time controls are the most common and popular.

All of that cultural backstory is why the MCC was never this group’s element: it was just never seen as being so important for Eshians in particular. So why, then, would they show up to the Masters and Open?

After the team got their ECC win in the Martian Independent Republic, the ball was rolling for Eshialand to travel headlong into more international chess, and despite the players’ great disdain for classical play, the MCC was where it had to happen. Lazlo Herefur demanded they not waste this opportunity.

With the best player from each nation getting the spot in the Masters, Eshialand’s spot was earmarked for Stephanie Jacobson, but she outright refused. Her career with Eshialand in the ECC was quite the long and storied one, but she wanted to take a bit of a back seat in this one. After all, she wasn’t even that important in the ECC run, just showing up as a substitute in a single match and helping with preparations, she wasn’t that good in prior MCC competition, and Antonii, with his Aleiravan background, was a better candidate to be the third player for Eshialand. Aleirave was the only part of Eshialand where classical was considered the main time control, with the Tereyev-era Klysevian elite considering it the “purest form of the sport”. Antonii was young when the regime ended, but the chess school, the culture, and the philosophy were still there. This was his element more than it was anyone else’s, and he was ready for the task.

This kicked a very unprepared Jamie to the Masters spot, and he was well out of his element. He wouldn’t be the lowest-rated player there, with Barkhastan’s Shavkat Muradov being slightly lower, but one look at his first two opponents — Katzeburg’s Rowena Sowards and the legend herself Anne Christian-Warren — would show just how difficult this challenge would be. In a rapid game, his strategy would 100% involve flagging both of them, but he couldn’t bank on that now. “I should’ve told him no…” he remarked the first time he saw the schedule.

As for the Open, Jason Severn, being the main voice of the team, was practically obligated to go. He didn’t have a get out of jail free card like Stephanie had, he just had to eat his lumps and take the flight to Katzeburg. Like Jamie, he’d also be playing black against one of the hosts in his first game, with Emilia Ziegler taking the white pieces against him. The two had played once before, in the Super Six of ECC XI, and it definitely wasn’t a pleasant matchup for him whatsoever. Unwinnable? No, not necessarily, but he would have to work his butt off to make it happen.

Meanwhile, Antonii, as the only unranked player entering the tournament, had a very unfriendly sight: a bye. For most players, seeing the bye would be a good thing, since after all it’s a free point. Who doesn’t want to be given a free win at the start of the tournament? However, for Antonii and his playstyle, an opening round bye was absolutely not his friend. Against any other opponent, he could figure out who he’d be playing well ahead of time from the signup list, get some prepwork in, study games, and use that first match as a warmup to ease into the tournament. However, with a bye, he’d have at most a day to prepare for his first round, plus he’d be playing an opponent who warmed up while he hadn’t. Antonii was probably the only player in the whole country who doesn’t like to see byes, but there it was, and he now had to deal with it.

And so, the mood for this whole delegation entering the MCC Masters and Open was extremely low. This was a group well out of their element who had difficult matches ahead and were practically forced to come along by Lazlo Herefur and this vague sense of responsibility for the ECF. They would try to make the most of it as they always did, but the initial sniff test smelled like rotten eggs.

Choppyhausenian Chess Club
at the MCC Masters and MCC Open in Waldstein, Katzeburg

Aaand we're back again at the Multiversal Chess Championships! After a formidable Top 4 performance at the ECC on Mars, the Choppyhausenian Chess Club has sent its best three chess players back to Earth to compete in the third (and fourth?) MCC tournament of the season. The team remains sponsored by Clyde & Coral Crown - Choppyhausen's largest insurance company, famous for sponsoring sports team that have the same anagram as their company.

Prof. James Huldenberg
Male, 48 years old, Multiversal Chess Ranking: 6th [13/9/4]
Huldenberg is a professor at the University of Kork (Choppyhausen's most prestigious educational institution) where he teaches Advanced Mathematics. He gained national fame through his regular appearances on the national television quiz show “Knowledge is Power” and is considered one of the most intelligent people in Choppyhausen. He compensates for his lack of theoretical knowledge with an impressive gift of foresight, but this sometimes causes him to lose sight of the time available to him. Originally considered one of the weaker parts of the team, Huldenberg has proved his worth at the MCC, becoming the best Choppyhausenian competitor in both MCC tournaments of the current season and reaching 2nd place at the Grand Casaran in Paradystopia.

As Choppyhausen's highest ranked player, Huldenberg will compete in the MCC Masters against the finest players of the Multiverse. His first opponent will be Charlene Jeannie Nat Myong Suh-Hyung from Valentine Z, currently ranked 18th.

Cassandra Covert
Female, 15 years old, Multiversal Chess Ranking: 16th [8/9/3]
The daughter of coffee shop owner and board game enthusiast Alexander Covert who also competed in the Choppyhausenian Chess Club before. She grew up surrounded by board games at all times and shares her father's love for all kinds of games but chess has always scratched a special itch for her. By the age of six she was able to beat her father in less than twenty moves. Nowadays, she is considered Choppyhausen's most promising chess prodigy. When she is not competing in international tournaments, she often plays against the regulars at her dad's café.

Covert reached 10th place at the Grand Casaran in Paradystopia, not bad for her age, but she's looking for an even better placement at her next tournament: the MCC Open. There, like Huldenberg, she will face an opponent from Valentine Z in the first round, Adriana Faith Kowalski Ela P Re. T. Lillian (67th).

Philomena Keil
Female, 33 years old, Multiversal Chess Ranking: 46th [7/5/8]
Philomena Keil is the only player of the CCC who has been professionally playing chess as a sport for more than a decade. While her skills on the board are quite impressive, her prominence is often reduced to the fact ther her younger brother Dominik Keil is a starting player for Choppyhausen's (way more popular) national football team. During the MCC she has acted as a chess tutor to Cassandra Covert, according to Covert, Keil has played a big role in her success in Zynusgrad. Meanwhile, Keil's own results have been lacking behind her teammates.

Keil is still looking for her success at the MCC. This trip to the MCC Open in Katzeburg might be exactly what she needs. But it certainly won't be easy: In her first round, she will face Ziggy Stardust (currently 9th in the Multiverse) from the Martian Independent Republic.
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes
Godmod game events: Yes
Godmod other events: Yes
._.

Multiverse's best descend on Waldstein as Katzeburgian icons look set for comeback

By Ernie Passant

For the first time in the history of the Multiversal Chess Championships, Katzeburg will be opening the doors to the best of the best as the Waldstein Forum hosts the MCC Open and MCC Masters. But on the eve of this grand event - one of the largest sporting events Katzeburg has hosted in the nation's young history, only behind the 41st edition of the Campionato Esportiva - those heavily involved in the domestic scene will be keeping an eye on two of the Open entrants as they make their return after a long period of absence.

Emilia Ziegler and Mark Jensen, two of Katzeburg's all-time best players, are due to take their spots in the Open after being away from the game for close to a year, with the last games on record for the two coming during Katzeburg's disastrous Elephant Chess Cup XII campaign. Granted, it wasn't the performance which caused the two stars to depart the stage - indeed, their showing over in South Newlandia was significantly better than the recent Katzeburgian performance at Elephant Chess Cup XIII (which by all accounts was a Katzeburg entry 'in name only' after members of the Deerhaven Chess Club entered on their own volition rather than having the KCF sign off on their entry) - but rather the heavily-whispered and sparsely spoken-of events which occurred after they returned to Katzeburg following elimination.

To many it is still unclear of the involvement of Ziegler, Jensen and MCC Masters competitor Rowena Sowards in one of the biggest news stories to hit last year - the arrest and eventual incarceration of Jack Eulemann for conspiracy to murder and witness intimidation, which had resulted in former ECC winner Klaus Rothbauer entering a witness protection scheme over in South Newlandia for his own safety. The entire plot was unveiled through a collection of audio clips and documentary evidence provided by a whistleblower from law firm Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant, which had deep links to Eulemann and his criminal activities through a close personal working relationship with the firm's General Counsel.

It was a hugely damning story which for whatever reason, had chess at the heart of it - and the blowback from it has been felt across the wider sport. The Katzeburgian Chess League - the domestic championship heavily bankrolled by DONG and to which it is still unclear the full extent of Eulemann's input on the organisation of the league - was immediately put on hold in the aftermath, with the rumoured start kicked down the line as the franchise owners worked to untangle themselves from DONG and Eulemann.

But time passes. Seasons change. News fades out of the cycle. And now the members at the heart of one of the biggest scandals in recent Katzeburgian memory are returning to the boards. And over on the spiritual home of Katzeburgian chess in Dragoonspiel, there is a cautious sense of optimism that things are going to get better. The Ynysgard Chess Club - at multiple points shuttered due to the club's leaders stepping away from the game - is back and arguably bigger than ever, with the town's participation in the new look national chess league sparking interest in the game.

"We're a long way from mainland Katzeburg and outside of Ynysgard Town doing something every now and then in the football, we've not got much to follow along with over here," school student Jonas Graza told us as we attended a club training night at the Ynysgard Chess Hall. "Chess at least gives us a route to something greater than ourselves, and seeing those big names of the game here in Ynysgard like Mark and even my old schoolteacher Emilia is exciting - it just feels more real that we could be next."

The hall was packed with players undergoing a regular night of friendly games, learning about chess tactics, and frantically trying to be the ones who got to take on the two Elephant Chess Cup winning players for a game or two. Jensen and Ziegler, both in attendance, won every game that evening they faced, but refused to speak to Checkmate when we sought an interview with them ahead of the MCC Open.

"We appreciate Checkmate making their way over here and see how well the re-energised Ynysgard Chess Club is doing," Jensen said in a short comment. "But we're not in a position to speak about anything just yet - our focus is on the MCC Open and ensuring that we can make the country proud with a good performance on home soil."

But what of the one Katzeburgian taking part who actually is playing on home soil? Rowena Sowards was the former deputy leader of the Waldstein Chess Club and the only Katzeburgian taking part in the Masters at the Waldstein Forum - with a strong home advantage, it's not unreasonable to think she could go far in the competition this time around.

However, the Ynysgardians were not the only ones who saw huge changes come from the conclusion of their involvement with Eulemann. Sowards, herself a former lawyer at DONG who used to work under the firm's General Counsel, tendered her resignation from the firm in the immediate aftermath of Eulemann's arrest and issued a short statement indicating her "deep regret and shame for having been blinded by the true impact of the work DONG was doing". She also split off from the Waldstein Chess Club, and while members of the club have been reluctant to go on record, there was a suggestion that in the final meeting before Sowards was due to participate in the MCC Qualifier in Zube there was a large-scale blowout between her and club leader Brian Bowman (who currently is the highest ranked Katzeburgian in the world at fourth).

So where has Sowards gone to following the rather public explosion of her personal and professional life? Surprisingly, she wasn't too hard to find - she has since moved to Ynysgard and now operates a small private practice on the town's main street. She also refused to speak to Checkmate about the events surrounding Eulemann's arrest, but did tell us she "had happily made the move away from the politics of mainland Katzeburg to Ynysgard" where she feels she can make a real difference for the members of the town and island. Her return to MCC play was done "in part, to prove that I still could compete at the highest level," but was quick to note that despite the move she is still committed to leading the Waldstein Warriors in the new-look KCL.

It's hopeful that with the MCC coming to Katzeburg for the first time and many of the multiverse's best showing their skills in Waldstein, this could be the rebirth of a new golden era of Katzeburgian chess - the domestic league finally has a start date and a clean break from the trouble of the past year; some of the nation's best players are finally hoping that they can be back to their best on the top stage, and the national federation are finally taking steps towards building a strong pathway for the nation's best to represent the country on a regular basis following the disaster of the country's entry in ECC XIII.

For the first time in a long time, there's optimism on Katzeburgian shores.

MCC Masters entrant

Shavkat Muradov (36)

Son of Murad Akhmetov, widely considered the greatest Barkhastani chess player of the Soviet era. Shavkat has always been more of a conformist than his father (who died in political exile) and does not quite play with the same flair, but he is still a solid all round positional player. He is very attacking but is also noted for his strong endgame play. Shavkat is also an expert player in the traditional Barkhastani board game of sarbazlar.

MCC Open entrants

Aydar Rakhmonov (24)

Innovative and unorthodox, Aydar hails from a tiny rural hamlet where he learned chess at the table of his grandfather, an illiterate goat herder, yet the humble shepherd boy shot into national attention by becoming national champion as a teenager. Dabbles in hypermodernist approaches, and known for his relentless counterattacking. Hugely popular in Barkhastan, especially among young chess enthusiasts, and credited with being the first hero of the internet age of Barkhastani chess. Mixes irreverent and silly humour in his commentaries. A little callow.

Nurgul Zhaksybekova (29)

Already considered the greatest female Barkhastani chess player of all time, eclipsing the great Aigerim "Husband Stabber" Karimova. She played her first public game at age 6 and is the only person to have won the Barkhastani Women's Chess Championship three times in a row, although she has less experience playing against top level male players. Has a very well rounded game with natural attacking instincts tempered by good positional theory. Off the board she is interested in mathematics and logic puzzles. Has not stabbed her husband, yet, but otherwise is generally perceived to have surpassed Karimova's legacy.

Technical Lieutenant Yerbol Askarov ran haltingly through the bowels of the underground naukograd, leaving bloody footprints behind him with each ragged step. He was wearing the grey-green uniform of the Barkhastani Air Force, but most of his tunic had turned brownish-red. He cradled his left arm tightly against his ribcage, his fist so tight his knuckles shone white against the dusty brown skin. As he approached a rusted railing, he leaned out his right hand to take his weight for a moment while he tried to suck some relief out of the humid, stale air, but the rust had eaten through the bar and it crumbled into dust. He collapsed to his knees. He gasped in pain and coughed so violently he spat a red froth that dribbled down his neatly shaven chin. He was out of breath, out of time, out of luck. For a moment all he could hear was the pounding of blood in his ears. The ticking of his father’s battered wristwatch. The click-clack of approaching boots.

And then – the cruel laugh of Hasan Babakhozhayev. Yerbol looked up. The terrorist’s evil visage loomed over him. Deep set eyes. A straggly beard like a mountain goat’s. And that awful smile. Two of his henchmen were with him, and one of the burly fiends raised a pistol towards Yerbol. The rack of the chamber echoed in the stillness of the cavernous naukograd bunker. Babakhozhayev gently pushed the gun aside with his palm, but this was not an act of mercy. His demon eyes stared intently at Yerbol’s left fist: he wanted what was within it. The other henchman stepped forward, and a huge boot slowly descended on Yerbol’s wounded leg, pressing down where the trousers were shredded and bloodied. He screamed and saw white at the pain, but he wouldn’t open his fist. Not for this man. Not for this monster.

Babakhozhayev leaned down. “What have you there?” he sneered in the rasping dialect of the Barkhastani mountainfolk.

Yerbol refused to answer. Blinking away tears of pain, he turned his face away and looked down. The walkway hung over one of the missile silos, now empty, just a huge, vast chamber of poured concrete that plummeted into the black nothing. He twisted away from the boot pressing on his leg and lunged towards the edge.

“No!” shouted Babakhozhayev, his goons immediately surging in to grab Yerbol and wrench him back before he threw himself into the abyss. Yerbol, though bleeding and outnumbered, fought valiantly, struggling, kicking, even getting a bite in that left one of the thugs yelping and clutching his ear as crimson poured through his fingers. But a slug in the gut ceased his flailing and brought him back down to his knees, and they fell on him to pin him down. Babakhozhayev ordered his men to open Yerbol’s hand, which they did in a manner that might put to the test the forum’s PG-13 rule, so let’s just say they made a persuasive case.

“Ow,” added Yerbol, also abiding strictly by the PG-13 rule. “That goshed well hurt, you rotten blighters.”

Babakhozhayev’s sinister grin widened as the now crooked fingers sprung uselessly open. In Yerbol’s hand – a small glass vial.

It was the vial Yerbol had seized from the laboratory as the first burst of automatic weapons fire ripped through the facility and activated warning sirens that had kept their silence through decades of disrepair. The vial he had clung to even as he scrabbled under a rapidly closing blast door. The vial that had been with him even as one of Babakhozhayev’s terrorists snapped off a brace of bullets, the first hitting him in the calf, the second burrowing deep into the tender flesh of his young belly. The vial that he had kept a tighter grip of than of the life now slipping out from him and dripping dark red into the chasm of the empty missile silo. The vial that Babakhozhayev plucked from his palm and examined with a wicked dark eye.

“Yes … ha ha ha … yes!!”

Hasan Babakhozhayev gave a dismissive nod to his men. They tipped Yerbol’s dying form over the ledge and he fell away, devoured by the gloomy maw of the silo. Several seconds passed before a dull thud sounded, by which time the terrorists were already following their leader back into the heart of the underground naukograd, the weapons facility that had held its secrets for so many years, but now had given up the most precious of all to this fanatic and his warriors of death. Babakhozhayev transferred the vial to a containment bag and sealed it, a cold smile settling on his face as he gave orders to set fire to the rest of the bodies. His men complied, splashing cans of accelerant around the bullet-riddled laboratory and over the slumped figures of Yerbol’s colleagues.

Once they’d cleared the lab, one of the men lit a strip of matches and tossed it in. The fires that instantly bloomed were reflected like dancing red knives in Babakhozhayev’s dark, menacing eyes.

MCC Non-Entrant

Leyla Kairatova (22)

Raised in a family of intellectuals in Terarkand, Leyla is a chess prodigy, whose rapid ascent has seen her reach the finals of the Barkhastani Women's Chess Championship as a teenager. She is not the most attacking player but is already developing a reputation for her exceptional defence and very deep understanding of endgame theory; she is extremely difficult to beat. Leyla is a talented, concert-level flautist and also enjoys long distance running, giving her a more rounded set of interests than some chess players. Her family's history of political dissent means she is habitually shadowed by political officers when at international tournaments, though she herself has thus far established little political profile other than speaking out in favour of women's education.

“Ugh,” said Leyla Kairatova, rolling over on her bed and kicking her long legs in the air in a manner that totally delighted the author, who has a bit of a thing for feet, mmm. “This summer is going to be so boring.”

She hadn’t made the cut to participate in the Multiversal Chess Championship.

“There’s absolutely nothing going on…”

Part 1 – A Sporting Day, A Valentian’s Day Out.

Head Diplomat Charlene Jeannie Natalia Adeline Marceline “완벽한 협상가” Celestie Christine Irelle Dv. Arianna Rees Edith Novena Annie Ciara Whitney Esther Iris Bethany Myong Suh-Hyung: The three of us touched down at the airport uneventfully. The usual affairs of having our bags collected, taking the shuttle to the city centre, and then to the hotel that we got a booking at. All good so far, no complaints about it! For a lot of people, I assume that such an experience will be quite extraordinary. Not just on the matter of going to other countries, but the idea that we will be going to many other universes. It’s still quite something to behold and to appreciate even perhaps like 40 years of us being exposed to the other worlds. Valentine Z is good too, but hey, all of these events are made possible with such travels. Anyway, going back to the hotel – very nice thing. I am glad that they provided each of us a room. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to share a room with Eveline and Adriana, and that they would reciprocate the same sentiment towards me. However, even if we factor in that Adriana can sleep standing in one corner, the space in the hotel might not be enough for more than one Valentian. Well, such is the quirks of us. Though of course, there are also places where they share the same size as us, and some that are even bigger than us.

I unpacked my belongings, though only the necessities. It’s something I have learned from my years as a journalist. I’m not saying that Katzeburg will be exploding and I’m sure that this is a safe country. However, safe or not, you typically only take out the things you absolutely need. It can happen when you have to change rooms too. Like “Oh so sorry, Ms. Charlene, you will be switching to another room.” My yapping aside, for me at that moment, it’s my toiletries; I need a shower after the long flight, ugh. Bless Adriana for not needing to do such things! The bathroom was thankfully able to accommodate me, though I have to be careful not to knock my head on a cruel, unforgiving
shower head. Did my shower, dressed up, and I was ready to head out to see what this nice country has to offer as a tourist. I asked Eveline and Adriana, but the former wanted to nap (understandable!), and the latter was going to be busy calibrating her chess program. Think I will take them out for a couple of drinks next time we go out together. For the time being, with my dress, a nice sunhat, and my compact camera, I headed out into the busy streets.

First thing I wanted to do and see was to head towards the Campbellnia National Park. I am not really a nature person, but when I am told of spotting something rare? I simply cannot turn down this opportunity. A rare blue cat, I wondered to myself while I waited for the transport. Is it literally blue, like Clarissa is? Hehe! Or… is their fur just a little bit more bluish? Not too blue, but just a little bit on the territory of being neutral grey? Whichever it may be, I am excited to go to the park. Definitely already have people looking at me in curiosity. It’s a little difficult to hide that you are a Valentian in other countries! I mean, you can hide, but we prefer not to, unless, well, it is going to be rather problematic. So far in these sporting nations, it’s not a problem! Just need to shorten a little bit to literally fit! Oh and yeah, they do know who I am hehe, so I felt a little warm inside too. They typically watched me from a distance, but hey, I don’t mind approaching them, offering to take photos with them or to hand them some autographs. Though they are a lot more fascinated with my height, which I had a bit of trouble as I stepped into a bus.
♪ If you are reading my sig, I want you to have the best day so far ! You are worth it, do not let anyone get you down ! ♪

True to the motto "Every perfectly played chess match is a draw", James Huldenberg's first two matches at the MCC Masters ended in a tie. The 48 year old will likely be annoyed about about the result of his first match against Suh-Hyung, where he let an early lead slip away. Meanwhile, a draw as Black against World Champion Eleanor Rigby is a very formidable result, although not that surprising, considering Rigby's love of draws.

Infront of Huldenberg are now two very challenging matchups: He will first face Johnny B. Goode, currently ranked #2 in the world, who also started into the tournament with two draws. Huldenberg has faced the Martian before at the GCC in Paradystopia; that game, too, ended in a draw. After Goode, Huldenberg will face Rowena Sowards (MCC #7). The Katzeburgian is leading the standings after two matches... Will her home advantage pay off?

True to the motto "Every perfectly played chess match is a draw", Philomena Keil's first two matches at the MCC Open also ended in a tie. The 33 year old, however, is likely not at all annoyed about the result of her first match against Ziggy Stardust, as it was her opponent who didn't manage to convert an early advantage into a win. Stardust might have thought he was still at the ECC; in any case, he played unusually quickly, a mistake that cost him the victory.

Infront of Keil is now a very challenging matchup: She will face Ruby Tuesday, currently ranked #8 in the world, the highest ranked MCC Open competitor in Katzeburg. The two have not played each other yet.

- Bye Round -

True to the motto "Nothing ventured, nothing gained", Cassandra Covert's first match at the MCC Open did not end in a tie. The 15 year old is likely to be annoyed about the fact that she might have ventured too far in her first match against Lillian. Her rook sacrifice in after about 45 minutes did not pay off and Covert had to resign in her first match of the tournament. Admittedly not a great start, but a bye in the second round evens her point score to 1 (1-0-1).

Infront of Covert is now a very challenging matchup: Ziggy Stardust, yet another Martian, currently ranked #9 in the world, the second highest ranked MCC Open competitor in Katzeburg. Covert has faced Stardust before at the GCC in Paradystopia, where she lost against the Martian and then twice at the ECC in Stardust's home country, both of those matches ended in a draw, although in total Choppyhausen lost both of their games against the MIR. Naturally, Cassandra is looking to improve her 0-2-1 performance against Stardust here in Katzeburg.

Check!: Double Trouble, It's Me

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Jun 27, 2026 9:46 am

Hello and Welcome to both the MCC Masters and the MCC Open, coming to you from the Waldstein Forum in Waldstein, Katzeburg. With two tournaments to follow in Waldstein, the eyes of the TJUN-ian public are split between the conference centre and the theatre of this Forum as our Jaguar Knights try to go out there and cause some chaos. TJUN-ian chess is in a weird place, both feeling like one of the elite while also not being at our very best, but faith in the Jaguar Knights remained at a constant...so what could they do here?

Starting in the theatre of the MCC Masters, both Anne Christian-Warren and Margarita Altamiranda would have to start their campaigns against each other in a duel between the two best women in TJUN-ian Chess and the two best period right now. The battle that they would end up having was certainly one for the ages, one in which either woman could've taken this at some point. As it happened, it ended in a draw, which felt like a fair result.

Unfortunately, neither woman could carry those performances into the next round of matchups, as both Jamie Cartwright and Elani Jabulan would cause both to fall on stage, falling to the bottom of the tree already. Both games weren't exactly bad; it was just frustrating to watch these two falter to some excellent play, so you know both of them will enter MD3 looking for better. ACW has Charlene Jeannie Nat Myong Suh-Hyung and, of course, World Champion Eleanor Rigby next, while Altamiranda has Shavkat Muradov and Johnny B. Goode ahead of her.

ACW - 0-1-1 | MA - 0-1-1

As for Tshering Gyeltshen, on his own in the Open, his opening two games would end up going a similar way to the ladies.
- Against Adam Esteban, the collective experience between the two of them kinda moved this game towards a stalemate. Everything was trending that way from the off, so it ending up there was no surprise.
- Against Aydar Rakhmonov, the counterattacking of the young Barkhastani was simply too much to handle. It was just relentless, over and over and over, until he simply couldn't take it anymore.

Down in tied 12th, he knows he has work to do...and he will have a bye to stew it all over with LCC before he goes back to work.

After lengthy delays, KCL finally due to get underway

By Ernie Passant

We thought it was never going to happen. We thought that given the wider criminal case and the mass media cycle which pushed it into hiding for a long period would have been enough to drown the idea entirely. But in a huge case of resilience in Katzeburgian chess, the country is about to open the doors to a brand new competition which could revolutionise chess in Katzeburg. The Katzeburgian Chess League is the long-mooted national domestic competition bringing team chess to Katzeburg. Overseen by the Katzeburgian Chess Federation, the competition aims to raise the profile of chess further in the nation, following successful performances at the Elephant Chess Cup and Multiversal Chess Championships, as well as build strong pathways for player development to ensure future consistent success on the multiversal stage.

Eight teams are due to take part in the initial edition of the competition based in major cities in mainland Katzeburg as well as the island of Dragoonspiel, with six professional players on each roster. Four players will take part for each team on a given matchday, playing against the opposing four players from the other team under the same gameplay rules from the most recent edition of the Elephant Chess Cup in regards to time control. However, there are a fair few significant changes for the initial season compared with the ECC which are being tested by the KCF to encourage more aggressive play in a search for match winners - not only will teams which claim the most board points across their games be awarded three points for a victory and teams that draw will be awarded a single point, but each player will face each other player across a team, meaning normal matches will contain 16 games in total.

Teams will face each other twice in the regular season, with the top six teams qualifying for the KCL Finals Series, which will be used to decide on the overall league champion. All games in the Finals Series will be single elimination games, with any matches tied after four games going to a single blitz match involving each team's lead player.

Image

At the end of the competition, individual awards will be presented to the player who has the single best overall record as well as additional awards to the most improved and for the biggest upset in-season. In addition, there will also be a single elimination cup competition to be played at the Waldstein Forum at the midway point of the season, with the four core members of each team competing individually in a straight knockout competition.

Franz Silverstein, the chair of the Katzeburgian Chess Federation said in a press release highlighting the start date of the new competition that "this domestic league is the birth of a bold new age of Katzeburgian chess. The country's multiversal success has come as a result of the consistent quality of a small handful of players based out of a few select towns and cities. No longer should this be the case and there is a real opportunity for Katzeburg to become the frontrunner of chess development in the multiverse. While this league has taken a while to truely get underway, due in no small part to a heavily regretful and shameful commercial partnership with a firm we currently cannot name due to ongoing legal action, we would like to thank those who have stuck with this league and the idea for the time they have and we hope that when the first matches get underway in the coming weeks that the citizens of Katzeburg give the sport a chance to entertain."

Many of Katzeburg's brightest chess talents who have already played at the multiversal level have secured contracts with various teams across the league, with arguably the most interesting example of this being the pair of Mark Jensen and Emilia Ziegler and Ynysgard, with the two former Elephant Chess Cup winners going a step further and being part-owners of the professional team. Much has been initially made of the team's chances of success in the initial season, with many domestic pundits expecting Ynysgard to be up the top of the league in the inaugural season, while others are expecting good things from Waldstein - led by Rowena Sowards - and Inverhaven, after the Knights signed Brian Bowman as their marquee for the first season.

For those looking for a team to support in the debut season, fret not! We here at Checkmate will be running our eyes over the eight competing teams this season and highlighting why you should look to throw your support behind a side; keep an eye out for our previews in the next issue.

OOC Note - If you'd like to have a player compete in the KCL which IC-ly takes place outside of MCC/ECC events, please feel free to contact me via TG or Discord!

Day 1

Jamie just couldn’t settle into his match against Rowena Sowards. Try as he might, everything was just off about playing classical again. He hadn’t touched this format at all since the SN3C, not even in practice. He wasn’t necessarily playing horrible chess, after all if this were a rapid tournament he’d be putting on quite a performance, but it just wasn’t sharp enough to cut it against an opponent who had over an hour to think. He was just outclassed, and opened the MCC Masters with a disappointing but somewhat expected loss.

Over on the Open side, things were starting somewhat better. While Antonii was taking a very nervous bye day, Jason hopped right into combat against Emilia Ziegler. Expectations for this game weren’t too high, between how long it had been since they’d played each other and how much their first matchup left to be desired, but Jason did come out swinging with the black pieces.

As hard as Ziegler fought, time quickly became a pressing concern. Jason was showing off some of the finer positional play he’d been working on, and his opponent was feeling the heat. It was almost as if the chessboard wasn’t the only thing on her mind at this moment… but Jason didn’t know what it could be nor did it even matter to him. What did matter was the advantage he carved out, slowly but surely, with Ziegler’s position fading away along with the time on her clock. Eventually, she was forced to resign, with all of Jason’s pieces working in unison.

Day 2

Day 2 saw Antonii finally get a chance to show up to the board, with a matchup against Mark Jensen opening his tournament. It wasn’t lost on him that all three Eshians here in Waldstein started their tournaments by playing with the black pieces against Katzeburgians, and with Jason winning on Day 1 while Jamie lost, this match would break the tie between the two delegations.

Things just weren’t feeling right for Antonii though. He did study as much as he could about the former GCC champion’s gameplay, even analyzing his Round 1 win against Aydar Rakhmonov move-by-move, but it just didn’t feel like enough. He couldn’t quite get inside his opponent’s head the way he was hoping to, and he ended up folding against his competition. Now he was left with an important question that went right to the core of how he played chess: was the problem with his studying or with his execution?

As for Jason, he would be squaring off against South Newlandian veteran Adam Esteban. Despite Esteban having played on Board 1 for South Newlandia in ECCs IX through XII, their teams never ended up facing each other until ECC XII’s Casaran stage, where they boringly drew as a part of a boringly drawn match in a performance so lackluster from both sides that both players found themselves shunted off to lower boards when ECC XIII rolled around. The matchup between these two players should’ve been amazing, given the nations they played for and the stages on which they played for them, but they just never came to pass in the way anyone hoped.

In a sense, this was a way for Jason to make good on this cosmic injustice. Was it in the ideal place? No, of course not. It belongs in an ECC… but this will have to do. He would just have to make this the perfect moment. And to his credit, he did a damned good job.

He wasn’t too sure what to expect as he took the white pieces, with his only prior game against Esteban coming as black, but he was able to keep a comfortable equality for most of the game. It took about two hours for the winning path to finally reveal itself, and when it did he pounced on the opportunity. Esteban resigned a few moves later, and Jason claimed his second win of the tournament.

So far, things were going remarkably well. It was just him, Jensen, and Zastępca Strażnika Adriana Krystal Desiree “Cudowny Manipulacja Światłem” Venus Kowalski Faith Stanisława Engelse I. Cherise Krystyna Zaborowska Sztormowska Pamela Alina Re. T. Lillian sitting on 2-0-0, and Round 3 would see him take up the white pieces against the latter. Meanwhile, Antonii’s middle-of-the-pack record would have him playing black against an opponent he, coincidentally, already studied: Jensen’s previous opponent, Rakhmonov.

Meanwhile, in the Masters, Jamie was facing the uphill battle that would be his matchup against Anne Christian-Warren. This was an absolutely terrifying matchup for him to be up against, especially considering she had come within spitting distance of being the World Chess Champion last year, and he really did not feel ready after fumbling the bag so hard against Sowards. He was firmly convinced after that matchup that this just wasn’t going to be his competition.

Before things got underway, he asked Jason what he could possibly do against her, since Severn had played her twice in the most recent ECC and maybe had some good ideas up his sleeve. Unfortunately, his only response was “just don’t die out there” since all he had to show from his two matchups were two embarrassing losses. Those weren’t exactly words of encouragement, and he was nervous as all heck when he sat at the board.

Somehow though, he held on. There weren’t many players like Jamie playing in the more elite areas of the MCC. People who were just willing to do whatever because they’re too used to more high-risk high-reward time controls and team competitions where your own result doesn't really matter that much. He was a bizarre player, and that was paying off. Eventually, he was actually able to get the better of his opposition, and as she tipped her king on the 37th move it restored his optimism that maybe, just maybe, classical wasn’t a total loss.

After that, Jamie would be headed into some, on paper, slightly easier matchups, as the lower-rated Elani Jabulan and Shavkat Muradov awaited him. These two were both having amazing tournaments so far though, with Muradov even topping the standings at 1-1-0 despite being the lowest-rated player here, so he knew he still had to lock in… but now that he’d beaten ACW, he knew he could.

With the MCC Masters and Open marking the return of Eshian players to classical play, there have been some rumblings in the Eshian chess community about whether classical formats could succeed. While the ECF didn’t want to make any comments, fearing they might jinx the tournament and cause a collapse which would lead to the Owls pulling out of future MCC competitions again, a small group of people on Zwischenzug.esh had their own plans in mind.

These people called themselves the Snail Club, and their goal was simple: bring this time control back to Eshialand and have it work. None of these people were grandmasters, mind. All of them hid behind screen names, just doing all of this for the love of the game. There were no plans for any of this to leave the site, but they had a love for this game that the nation wasn’t serving. If they could fill the void by themselves and for themselves, then why not?

They started putting out blog posts on the site talking about the MCC, what it meant to them, and why they loved classical. All this, of course, to advertise their club and bring more people into a potential tournament series. It was small and the movement was grassroots, but it was there. They were being noticed, and it looked like something might end up happening.

It had been cold, that autumn Saturday, even by Eleanor's standards. It almost made her rethink the walk to the municipal library - was she even going to like this? - but it wasn't that far, and besides, her friend Michelle was going to be there. Her dad was running the event, after all. Best to go there, it might be fun.

The Borealis Library wasn't very big. Two floors might seem like a lot for such a small base but the building it was part of had nine. Still, though, the librarians had managed to fit books everywhere they could, with shelves upon shelves upon shelves, even some that spun around and had archive boxes on the back for dusty old tomes that didn't do as well with air exposure. Eight-year-old Eleanor had never read any of those, but they did look cool. Those records and manuscripts weren't what she was there for, though.

Pretty much right after you went up to the second floor (via a staircase which had bookshelves built into it) there were some tables. They had played host to game nights, art sessions, everything you can think of. What they had been rolled out for today was chess. Some of her friends knew how to play it, but Eleanor didn't. She was just here to learn. And there he was. Tall (nearly two meters, according to Michelle, but Eleanor thought that was a bit exaggerated), loud, friendly, Paul Day. He'd made it to the final of the Martian Chess Cup once, and finished third twice. There was a bit of a difference in skill level between the two.

The first game they played was a learning one - "here's how the pieces move" and the like. He taught the way the knight moves to Eleanor as a zig-zag (one up, one to the left or right, another up), and that was always how she remembered it. The bishops, shooting across the board. The rooks, just going in straight lines. The queen, a rook and bishop together. Eleanor lost, but that was okay. The first game was a learning game.

So was the tenth. And the hundredth. And the thousandth, four years later. By then Eleanor wasn't bad, by any means - she had scored a couple of impressive wins - but there was still quite the gap. A thousand games in and her record against Mr. Day (as she still thought of him) was 0-2-998, the first draw coming from a sacrifice of both bishops to force perpetual check and the second from an endgame where she was able to trade off just enough pawns and hold a draw with rook against rook and bishop. Paul was quite impressed by both, and by the time of the second draw he encouraged her to start entering local tournaments.

She wasn't all that good at first. Playing so much against Paul, she had adopted his strategy of slowly pressing and waiting for her opponent to make a mistake, but that strategy was a lot easier to pull off as a grandmaster than as a young woman. But she got better over time. Practice didn't make perfect, but it made progress, and that was enough for her. By the time she was sixteen, she had gotten a name for herself by almost always being happy with a draw - her favorite way to win a knockout fixture would be 6.5-5.5 after five rounds of tiebreaks. That year was also the year she won her first Borealis Junior Chess Cup, and she'd repeat the feat the next year before aging out of the division. Progress in the main cup was still slow, because there were plenty of experienced masters, the greatest of which of course was Paul Day. Aged 19, she lost against him in the quarters. Twenty-one, round of 16 after three tiebreaks, losing 5-3. Twenty-two was her longest run yet, but that ended in the semifinals at his hand, a dropped pawn in the first game something she couldn't recover from.

The first time she won the Borealis Chess Cup, quite young as a winner at only 24, she didn't even have to beat him - he got knocked out in the semifinals on the other side of the bracket, and her finals opponent was much easier for her to deal with. She didn't win another championship for nine years after that, and who defeated her looked like this: Day (final), Day (quarterfinal), Baburin (quarterfinal), Day (semifinal), Kolomeytsev (round of 16), Zhang (semifinal), Day (final), Vasilenko (semifinal), Day (semifinal). Six of those players went on to win the title - Paul Day every time except the first time he beat her in a semifinal, Andrei Kolomeytsev on his insane run, and Zhang Hezi when she won her only championship. When she finally did defeat Day, it won her the tournament, this time at thirty-four.

As the years went on, Paul got up there in age. Although he won a couple more Borealis Cups after Eleanor won her second, it was clear that he wasn't as much of a chess player as he used to be, and by the time the portal opened up and Elephant Chess Cup 8 rolled around, he was just too old to go. Fifteen, twenty years prior he might've made board 2 or 3, but now he was just too slow. Second or third round exits in the qualifying tournaments for those international slots were his norm, with a quarterfinals run at 75 being the shock of the decade as the 89th seed, but there Ziggy Stardust was too much for him, overpowering him 2-0. He'd win his age divisions, but beating up on a bunch of old men was hardly fun, even if he was one himself. He would have to satisfy himself with watching Eleanor play and cheering her on.

“You’re a madman!”

“No I’m not.”

“You won’t get away with this!”

“Yes I will.”

“You’ll … never … take … me … alive!”

At last, Hasan Babakhozhayev agreed with something Vice Inspector Gurbanmyrat Işangulyýev was saying, and kicked him out of the door of the taxiing jet plane. Işangulyýev was immediately sucked into the engine, conclusively proving his point. I mean, holy shit, this guy was turned into tomato fucking puree.

“Ooh, that’s put me right off me bolognese,” said Mirbek Abdyrakhmanov. He pushed away his small tray of food and took a sip from his water to fight the queasiness that having liquefied police officer spattered across his window had brought on.

Babakhozhayev closed the door of the plane, silencing the roar of the wind around, as they continued their taxi across the deserted runway. He returned to his own seat facing the silver haired man sitting beside Abdyrakhmanov.

“My apologies for that irritating delay,” Babakhozhayev said obsequiously. He gripped his armrests a little tighter as the engines disgorged the last bits of Işangulyýev and roared to full power. The plane blasted towards lift-off. The silver haired man sat unmoving, except for the prayer beads dangling from his right hand, which continued to rhythmically clack through his fingers, and his lips, which fluttered with unspoken prayer.

The moment of incredible tension was barely interrupted by Abdyrakhmanov wondering aloud if they couldn’t have delayed take-off a few minutes to squeegee the windows clean.

The plane ascended rapidly, cutting up through the clouds. Below them, the Barkhastani mountains fell away, and the steppes opened before them, a seemingly endless sea of grass and dust and secrets. Once it levelled off at high altitude, Abdyrakhmanov was straight out of his seat to head for the drinks trolley at the back; Babakhozhayev eased himself from his seat and followed at a more leisurely pace. He grimaced in disapproval as Abdyrakhmanov poured a foul, polluting liquor for himself. Not for the first time, he reminded himself that sometimes, the work of God required the help of infidels. Temporary help.

“Everything’s in place?” murmured Abdyrakhmanov. He took a sip, and Babakhozhayev could smell the evil on his breath.

“Yes,” he answered. “Kirillov will meet us there. Nothing can go wrong now.”

Abdyrakhmanov shuddered. “Don’t say that. That’s nearly always what someone says immediately before something goes wrong.”

Babakhozhayev sneered. “What? Who is going to stand in our way now?”

Abdyrakhmanov shook his head and muttered darkly. “You never know, you never know. There could be someone waiting for us there. A spy, a secret agent.”
Babakhozhayev rolled his eyes. “You read too many spy novels, my friend. For once in your life, have faith.”

He clapped a heavy hand on the banker’s shoulder. “No one is waiting for us in Nuqarkand.”

TJUN-ia wrote:...the young Barkhastani was simply too much to handle. It was just relentless, over and over and over, until he simply couldn't take it anymore...

Leyla Kairatova was so gripped by the spicy romance book she was reading, she almost missed her stop. Like many young Barkhastani young women, Leyla enjoyed reading "kokpar romances", which were basically hockey romances except with significantly more decapitated goats. Despite the disapproval of authorities in the deeply conservative Islamic tribal confederacy of Barkhastan, the genre was hugely popular. This one was particularly spicy! She moved a trembling figure to turn the page, only to register at a second glance the sign for the station. She quickly slipped her smooth, perfectly arched, buttery soft feet back into her shoes, tossed the paperback into her bag and swept the large backpack up, and headed for the door of the train, jumping out just in time as the warning sounds began. Her blonde hair whisped around her in the winds buffeting in from the steppes. She took a moment to gather it up and tie it with a pink band from her wrist, and then headed for the exit, spelling out the station name in bright, clear lettering.
