Cup of Harmony 92; Team Cardenao Starting 11 Discussion!

Alright, let’s dig down a bit and talk about the team representing Cardenao at the 100th World Cup, coming off a surprise runners-up finish in CAFA 11 to barely miss out on Finals Qualification. This is a Blue and Golds squad that is built to function and succeed like a team, long gone are the days of Chímo Ventura, Haritz Larrainzar, or Juanma Saez dragging the team to victory, yet there are few names such as those legends gracing the team today. The future is undefined, but the present is here and it’s Cup of Harmony 92 BABY!!!! Let’s take a look at the starting XI representing yourrrrr Cardenao BLUE and GOLDS!

Let’s start with the man between the sticks, Mr. Kai Chidubem. At 32 years of age he’s basically a teenager in goalkeeper years and he’s been turning out for the national team for over a decade now. Kai is a fantastic goalkeeper, really an elite shot stopper with his powerful 6’3 frame. He’s not the best with the ball at his feet, but as long as you can stop the ball from going in the net, well that’ll have to do! Despite his age, the world class reflexes appear to be unchanged; add on Kai’s absolutely elite trash talking and you’ve got a keeper! That smack talk goes great with right back Fito Peru, who is quite the jokester himself, I mean who can forget when he untied Jason Jenner-Pokka’s shoelaces during the game against Kimi-Soumi, what a cheeky lad! Fito can be spotted charging up the right flank during games as he tries to whip one of his great crosses into the middle. He’s not the most solid defensively, but he’s got good timing for tackles and knows how to keep his winger out wide. Off the pitch, catch him riding one of his many motorcycles around the country, especially through the mountains of Western Cardenao. Looking at the heart of our defense, we’ve got #4 Vittorino Seve Dioli holding it down at centerback. The 26 year old is one of the most talented defenders we’ve produced, not only is he immaculate when defending, rarely putting a foot wrong, but he’s also a menace with the ball at his feet. Vito is a great passer across all levels, but he has an especially nice cross field pass that he just pings so sweetly across the field. He’s not afraid to get up in attack either when the game calls for it; Striker Vito is very much a meme in Cardenao. He’s a very reserved individual, always gives terse, to the point responses when talking to the media, and it’s probably easier to spot a unicorn than it is to see Seve Dioli out and about, man likes his privacy! Partnering him at centerback is 29 year old Fedele Lenti, Fido is a proper hardman who will just kick the shit out of his opponent if it seems like he might be beat, which makes for a great pairing with the more elegant Vito. Off the field, man Fido can always be found at the nearest bar knocking em back with the locals, especially during international games. Finally, we’ve got the captain Moustir-Yves Almeny holding it down at left back. 30 and rocking his prime, Moustir still retains his elite pace, confident dribbling, and assured tackling while projecting his biggest strength: sheer aura. Seriously, if you’re a fan, you know he’s going to have a good game. If you’re a teammate, you know you’ve got an incredibly complete player on the left wing. If you’re an opponent, you can hear him chase you down, feet pounding before nicking the ball and getting the counter started. He’s real creative, always has a tricky solution to any problem he faces, and that sort of consistency has made him mainstay of the team since he was 20. In his younger years, you could catch Moustir racing around New Cardonia in one of his Dilajo sports cars but he seems to have given that up as he matures some and he can now be spotted leisurely fishing in the hottest spots across the Iceethuh Sea. But enough about defense, how bout those boys in midfield?

Well the midfield has historically been the powerhouse of the Cardenaoan national team, a smart midfield and a sharp striker have been the foundation of any ‘success’ the team has found. I’ve mentioned the name Haritz Larrainzar several times in this article and with good reason, Haritz is a hero of the national team and proved that once again when he returned in the second half of WC99 qualifying to help propel us into the Finals! The man anchoring the whole thing is 29 year old Jake Casales at the 6 and to be honest, this guy could have a second career as a model! I suppose he does with his endorsement work, but phew to be 6’1 with a jawline like that, and he’s brilliant at footy too! Jake Casales is an absolute rock both in and out of possession, he’s got great positioning so he’s always where he needs to be to recycle possession or shut down an attack, and he’s got these long legs he uses to stab and poke the ball away from an opponent before hitting a peach of a pass through the defensive line. It’s a telling sign of how Cardenao plays the game that they’ve opted for a possession focused player as opposed to a purely defensive destroyer in the 6 role. In front of him he’s got the delightful Ricky Delafont ahead of him. Ohhh Ricky Ricky, what a joy to watch you Tiki Tiki! 5’8 and born with the ball on his foot, Ricky Delafont is a clever dribbler who always has his eyes up scanning for a through ball. Sometimes he holds onto the rock for a little too long and loses possession, but with his vision and ability to cut out the narrowest passes, well you just have to live with that. Off the pitch he’s the life of the party, always showing up to events, always finding the red carpet, always chatting and joking with fans, Ricky really is living his best life. Putting it all together is Camilo Zavala, who has embraced a late arrival to stardom with the 29 year old having an evercool demeanor. Camilo is a primarily left footed player who plays as the 10 for the Blue and Golds and he has been blessed with phenomenal touch and dribbling abilities, gliding around the pitch setting up play after play, occasionally chipping in with a goal himself. You’d maybe like to see him test the goalkeeper more often, Zavala has a good shot on him, while his penalty kick record is spotty at best, though he’s quite nice at freekicks. Another area of concern is, despite his impressive on the ball ability, Camilo often doesn’t track back on defense as often or as intensely as he needs to and that can land his team in a tricky situation. The game is won and lost in the midfield, the Cardenaoan team has a lot of skilled, creative passers in the midfield but perhaps lacks that bit of steel that could see them to the Finals once again. I suppose we’ll just have to score more goals than the other team does!

Speaking of goalscoring, let’s talk about goalscorers starting with Kiko Nécib. The man wearing the 9 for La Furia Azule has developed quite nicely since storming onto the scene eight years ago as an 18 year old wonder kid. Those legendary performances against Audioslavia along wrote him into the fabric of our national history, butttt that was some time ago now and it increasingly seems that Kiko might be yet another highly touted Cardenaoan wonderkid who failed to reach the heights envisioned. That’s not to say he isn’t a good player, no, he’s definitely a deadly striker that New Cardonia FC is happy to have. Always in motion, Kiko is ever searching for an opportunity to slip through the defense to finish off a well weighted through ball. He can tuck ‘em away with either foot, he can score from close, medium, and long range, he can curl them in or bang the ball past the keeper, the lad is a goal scorer through and through and that’ll do for me. Feeding him opportunities is the ever tricky ChuChu Hernandez out on the left wing. First off, the 27 year old is fast as hell. Second off, this boy got a wicked cross off his left foot. Third off, this boy's name is ChuChu Hernandez and that’s just fun to say! When he’s not getting it done on the field, ChuChu is quietly putting together a second career as a TV star, particularly in medical sitcoms. The final member of the starting XI is Dimitri Micalizo, a real Jack of all trades who recently transferred to the Alameda Desperados after many years turning out for New Cardonia FC. Mr. Dimitri is Mr. Versatile on the right wing, the 31 year old can dribble, he can pass, he can shoot, he can tackle, he’s like some sort of super utilitarian knife that can be used for a lot of purposes. The three forwards all bring different aspects to the attacking gameplan, and together they make it work.

It’s going to be a quick n dirty qualification campaign, but Team Cardenao is rolling into Cup Of Harmony 92 after coming so close to qualification in WC100. Now is our chance to improve and finally make it to the elimination rounds and show the world what we’re capable of. Blue and Gold…La Furia Azule forever!

Cup of Harmony 92

Kandorith Returns To The CoH - Kuroda's Moment of Glory?

Kandorith had a successful World Cup campaign despite not qualifying or reaching the playoffs in Group 14, which was highly competitive. Mekahi finished third behind Reçueçn and Banija with 29 points; however, this is not the end of Kuroda's current campaign. Kandorith, for the first time since the leadership of Michiyu, the Kandorese Football Association received an invitation to the Cup of Harmony. The last time Kandorith participated in this esteemed tournament was Cup of Harmony 87. While the national team is busy preparing, we were able to get an exclusive interview with the person at the front of it all, Reina Kuroda, and how they look back at the World Cup qualification campaign and how the team will go into the Cup of Harmony

REINA KURODA

You have been the manager of the national team for two campaigns now. What was it like being the manager of the Imakazawa Ravens, becoming champions again, and suddenly the KFA calls - What went through your mind?

"Honestly? It was unexpected - even for me, the Ravens are a team I have gotten to know throughout the years and have enjoyed working for all this time now, but when the board of the Football Association calls, how can you refuse? Managing the national team is bigger than any club you dream of managing. I knew it would be brutal as the Kandorese football has been in a downward spiral for some time. Ranked 117th now, when I took the position, that is quite some places removed from the previous rankings our nation has achieved. I told them I would sleep on it, expecting them to pick someone else like Nakamura from Higaku Antlers, but once I stopped overthinking the next day, I called the KFA back and told them if they had not picked someone else yet, I was ready to lead the team for World Cup 98 back then, and look where we are now."

While we know the stories of the previous qualifiers, did you do something different for World Cup 100?

"Not in particular. I have great confidence in how the board plans things with the players in mind and their own concerns. The only thing we did differently this time was fitness. The Kandorese league has been unforgiving and more intense than ever, so we had a few concerns about some of the star players. My primary focus was improving the system we have been working on for years and developing an even more unique and unexpected style to challenge any opponent head-on from moment one."

29 Points, third place, a goal difference of +13. Looking back, did the team exceed expectations, or did it fall short, according to you?

"Both, if I'm honest with myself. We stood firm against Banija and Reçueçn, losing only three games in total, but third place does sting in a way. I know we could have done better in a few matches, and I think that we could have actually made it to the playoffs, but congratulations are where congratulations are due. Banija just took off after a while, but Reçueçn also had an enormous, solid campaign, and I think we must strive to perform like these teams again in the future. In the end, I am very proud of what we have achieved and how we got there. I think that we can push even further in the foreseeable future and perhaps even cause a few upsets along the way."

A Cup of Harmony invite after a tough qualification campaign, does the preparation look different or the same?

"It's a shorter timeline, but it doesn't change our regular schedule all that much. The only difference is that we tend to hammer more on a sharper focus, and I'm looking forward to getting out on the field as quickly as possible. So far, I think the invitation has shifted the position from somewhat nervous about having to perform during qualifiers to nothing to lose, and going for a shot at glory: making it to the Cup of Harmony is already a win in its own right."

What are the overall expectations for the Cup of Harmony? Semifinals like in CoH87 or the massive success of CoH77?

"Of course, the title is always the goal. However, we have to be realistic here: we are still rebuilding from scandals, a cancelled domestic league, and rebuilding the entire team structure. We are in the shadow of a whole different generation that made the empire the football-loving nation it is today. I hope for a semifinal. We have the technical quality, we have the pace, and the mentality - the qualifiers have shown that we can deal with pressure, and we can come back from behind and grab the win if we put our heads to it."

What is the Target for the upcoming campaign? Any target points?

"At least 9 points, which would put us in a good position. Hopefully not a single loss either. We are in a group with two strong sides, like Katzeburg and Natkr, and that is where we need to put most of our focus; however, we cannot forget that we cannot underestimate ethane, especially not Kita-Hinode. It will be a very tight group phase, and we have to give our very best in every game to make sure that we go through. I do not like to make predictions as football can be as unpredictable as the weather in Ginza."

Returning for the first time since Cup of Harmony 87, how big is the tournament in our empire, in your experience?

"Bigger than most people realise, it is still strange to think that this is the tournament that got our team the first major silverware, and we have consistently performed well at the Cup of Harmony throughout its existence. While the fans might be disappointed not to have qualified for the World Cup, this tournament ranks much higher in their minds, as it is a smaller-format tournament. To the fans, it is something they know we can touch, and a tournament where they can be highly hopeful of an excellent Kandorese performance."

The shadow of Kaya Michiyu has always been there. It is a manager we still talk about regularly as the greatest of all time in the empire. Is there any pressure from this?

"I wouldn't say pressure, it's more about respect. Michiyu built the foundations of our current football philosophy and prowess, a fearless, no-nonsense style focused on creating excellent youth players and chances to create well-built and well-performing teams. Of course, we talk about their successes and their management in an admiring tone, hoping to reach those heights ourselves. We do not fear standing in their shadow; we honour their legacy by winning as much as we can."

The squad has been performing really well, even according to the analytics. Will there be any last-minute changes to the team? Is everyone in form? Any injuries?

"You want to know my upcoming lineup? Nice try - I'm not telling you a single thing. What I can say, though, is that the core of the team is rock-solid. Sora Ito leads the team, Saito, Fujimoto and Nishimura score. The rest of the team keeps everything running with their expertise and exceptional abilities, while Mori and Sato keep our goal clean. Beyond that? You'll have to wait and see. All the players know that if they impress the technical staff and me during training, they will have their moment to shine. Everyone misses a pass or a free kick now and then. Everyone can get an injury or even the flu. The players know what I expect from them."

Looking ahead: WC101 qualification? Maybe even the making of an upcoming success story?

"I am not someone who wants to look ahead too much. We are currently focusing on this Cup of Harmony and what lies beyond, who knows. Of course, I want to qualify for the next World Cup, but who knows if I am still in the KFA's picture when that time arrives. However, we are investing heavily in our youth players, the Kandorese league is showing enormous potential once again, and football is alive throughout the empire once again."

As a personal milestone, is a CoH title bigger than a domestic win with the Imakazawa Ravens?

"Absolutely, I have been leading the Ravens to new heights. I am not downplaying that it is incredible to win the league title, but an international title is different. Every manager dreams of making it on the international stage and being immortalised in the empire's sporting history."

Thank you for this interview, and good luck on the upcoming Cup of Harmony tournament. The entire empire is watching, and we are looking forward to what magic you can bring us again. Any closing words for the fans?

"Absolutely, the fans can be assured that we will do our very best to show what we are made of. Our nation comes together during times like these, and it is up to Mekahi to show what we have in store in terms of sporting prowess."

Cup of Harmony 92

The Cup of Harmony awaits the Kandorese team and fans. Kuroda will be looking to lead Mekahi to victory, making a name for themselves among the greats of Kandorese sports history. Fighting for glory, ranking and of course silverware, Kandorith faces off against Naktr, Kita-Hinode, Katzeburg and Ethane in the coming group stage. The top 8 group winners will reach the round of 16, while the bottom group winner, the second-placed teams, and the top 6 third-place teams will compete in the round of 24. The Busoga Islands await.

Looking ahead to the Cup of Harmony

As the Lodgers travel to Zwangzug for the 92nd Cup of Harmony, we look ahead to a tournament where the Imperial Commonwealth, for the first time in several generations, will actually be one of the favourites to go all the way and finally win a multiversal footballing title.

Under the helm of a new manager in the shape of Aleksandr Meogegiv, and a brand new attacking philosophy, Eastfield Lodge entered the landmark 100th World Cup as the top seed in a very competitive group featuring Biyambi and Auprussia, as well as perennial spoilers Natanians and Nosts, and the new management and team style did play havoc initially, not helped by two red cards to both centre backs in the opening match of qualifying. The slow start was enough to set up the side for their eventual failure to qualify, not helped when they lost both matches to Biyambi and squandering a two goal lead to group winners Auprussia in the dying embers of the qualification campaign. As a result, the Lodgers finished the group in third, a full five points back from the playoff place in second, nine points from first place, despite having the best attack, second best defence and the best goal difference of the group. For a nation so used to failure historically, it was still a sharp crash back down to earth after three straight qualifications to the World Cup finals in the 48 team era.

As a result, Eastfield Lodge enter the Cup of Harmony for the first time in over 20 years, the last time they featured in the competition being the 80th edition of the tournament, which happened to be hosted by one of the Lodgers’ group mates this season. In that Cup of Harmony, the Lodgers struggled hard, only scraping a point off Zwangzug as they finished with a 0-1-2 record and in fourth place. This time, they have the added pressure of entering a World Cup Committee tournament as the highest ranked side in the competition, still ranked 18th in the world following qualifying, and the best of 45 sides heading to Zwangzug and the Busoga Islands. Facing them will be the hosts of the 80th Cup of Harmony, fifth seeds Krytenia, fourth seeds Demos, third seeds Choppyhausen and second seeds Dhemixia.

Of course, the Lodgers open up on the back foot with a bye, before facing the 86th ranked side Choppyhausen on matchday 2. This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, Choppyhausen being the 87th Baptism of Fire’s runners-up. The Team of Teal performed remarkably well as debutants to the World Cup, doing something that would feel extremely familiar to Imperial Commonwealth fans as they were in the playoff spot in Group 20 heading into the final matchday of qualifying where they had a bye, and the chasing pack would win their games to overtake Choppyhausen and knock them out of the World Cup. That match will be followed by another match against a Baptism of Fire entrant from this cycle, the nation/region known as Demos, sometimes referred to as Atymnius [for some reason] - they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Snestar. However, they were another nation well in contention for qualifying for the World Cup this cycle as well, as Demos were held to a draw on the final day when they needed a win and other results to go their way. They also finished fourth in their group, similar to Choppyhausen.

It’s the final two matches that will form the biggest test for Meogegiv’s side, the first being against second seeds Dhemixia, a relatively new nation on the scene who are also fast developing an international reputation for mediocrity rivalling that of the Imperial Commonwealth. They were in a good position to try and qualify with two games to go in Group 12, a point behind Anewkansas and 3 behind the previous World Cup runners up Squornshelan Remnant States, and due to play both in the final two matches - they proceeded to lose both, finishing a full seven points off the playoff spot. The two sides have never met, but this match is already being billed as a “Stoppable Force vs Moveable Object” grudge match. Speaking of which, the final group stage match features one of the few nations in world football history with an even more storied history of misfortune than the Lodgers - Krytenia. The 129th ranked side were another side in this group to fall foul of the last matchday bye - having beaten Captina Island on Matchday 17 to move above them into second, only to not play on the final day and allowing Captina Island to move back into the playoff spot with a win. Krytenia’s history has long been documented by others, including but not limited to the folks at The Idiot Project. Despite the two sides being pillars of the World Cup’s history, the last actual meeting between the two sides came in the 13th Summer Olympics in the Free Republics nearly 4 decades ago, the Imperial Commonwealth coming out on top 1-0. However, rumours of bizarre time shenanigans have followed the resurfacing of an actually potent Krytenian roster, featuring players from World Cup 50, nearly a full century ago in Eastfielder terms, so the gap between the two sides may well be closer than many predict.

The wind was in Roslund’s sails going into the second half of the Kongensliga season, and they looked to only ascend from here. After their 2-0 win against Trondhelle in Match 20, the Mirakaler sat at second place with 42 points, just behind Rega Lysborg, who had 44 points. Despite being the clear underdogs going into the season, and spending the last few years in the basement of the Kongensliga, the team finally looks to turn things around. The renewed confidence in their team spread throughout the rest of Roslund, with citizens hanging banners and flying flags in the club’s red, yellow, white colors, and jerseys being seen regularly around the city. The last time Roslund won the league title was over fifty years ago, during the 54’-55’ season. While a lot of the players from that squad had passed on by then, a few were still alive and active in the Roslund community, including fullback and team captain Paul “Lefty” Vestergaard. Lefty, who happened to be a Roslund native and lifelong fan of the team, regularly participated in charitable events around the city long into his retirement, and showed no signs of slowing down. At 81 during the 2008 season, Lefty was one of the oldest “superfans” for the Roslund Mirakaler, and was deeply connected with both the organization, and the fan groups that supported Roslund’s football team. By the 08’-09’ season, it was a decades long tradition for Lefty to ring the bell at the top of the north stands at Astermark Park, one of the last remnants of the site’s former life as an industrial center. Goalkeeper Hugo Krebs would recall that hearing the bell from the tunnel would fill the team with the motivation they needed to compete, and push away their anxieties about the upcoming match. Fans like Lefty, and the rest of the people of Roslund, gave the Mirakaler a large network of support, making the tight knit community rally around their football team as they looked to defy the odds. But arguably, the easy part was over for them, now they’d have to compete at an elite level if they wanted to stay at the top.

It was at this point of the season that snow began to fall across most parts of Solgavden, excluding the warmer southern coast. The snow fell heaviest in the northern frontier, where mountains separated the nation from their neighbors. As such, football during this time was very special, leading to the pitch being blanketed with snow, players forced to bundle up anyway they can, and a high visibility ball being used to stand out against the completely white background. Helager, a city in the north of Melvenia Province, was infamous for the snowfall they received, with the city embracing their circumstances and becoming a hub for winter sports such as ice hockey and skiing. But Elvern, the second largest city of Höjmark Province and one of the northernmost cities in Solgavden is no slouch when it comes to snow, receiving close to 90 inches of snow a year. Their two major football teams, AFC Elvern and Elvern Kavaleri, both use this to their advantage, with their stadiums being known as “frozen fortresses” during the winter months. In Matchday 22, Roslund would have to travel to one of these “frozen fortresses” to face Elvern Kavaleri, one of the most infamous teams in the league. Elvern Kavaleri was named for the elite cavalry forces from the historical Duchy of Höjmark, who still exist as armored units in the Royal Solgavish Army. The people of Höjmark are proud of their martial heritage, and it reflects on the football teams in the area, who are known to be some of the most aggressive in all of Solgavden. Elvern Kavaleri are the worst of them all, as their far-right “Sons of Skov” ultra group have been violent in the past, making them enemies with most of the league. For any team, facing Kavaleri in the snow was a rite of passage, and Roslund would have to overcome this test if they want to keep their championship hopes alive.

Of course, as luck would have it, a blizzard was forecast on the day of Roslund’s game. Luckily, the brunt of it would come later in the night, but the team would still play just as the storm was starting. The game itself would be just like any other snow game in the Kongensliga, with Roslund wearing their black third kits instead of their white away ones, and Elvern sporting their usual green and yellow home kits. The neon orange ball was kicked off, and Elvern immediately took control. The Kavaleri employed a highly offensive 4-3-3, focused solely on driving down the pitch and putting pressure on opposing defenses. Meanwhile, Roslund Mirakaler had a more balanced 3-4-3, which revolved around manager Emil Vardaman’s system of giving most of the players a touch on the ball, making even a traditional center back like Dominic Straub an offensive threat. Elvern Kavaleri soon scored the first goal in the match after catching Roslund's defense off guard, and their player celebrated by diving into a growing pile of snow. Being down early in the match wasn't an issue for Vardaman and the rest of the team, after all, they're used to being the underdog of every game they play. The Mirakaler responded by keeping possession of the ball, making short passes as they methodically drove up the pitch. Elvern’s defense was just as aggressive as their offense, and constantly harassed the Roslund players, even bringing down striker Rudi Elmerssan down after a hard tackle. Luckily, Elmerssan was able to continue playing, but the referee awarded a penalty to Roslund, and the striker opposite to Elmerssan, Tom Bochanan, slotted it home for Roslund's first, and subsequently only goal of the match. A draw was a disappointing result for the home team, but any other year they would've easily lost this game to any combination of sloppy play, missed assignments, and failed attacking opportunities. Yet, this team has managed to come together and pull away a point, as they have done plenty of times this season.

With their draw against Elvern Kavaleri, the Mirakaler were still in second place, just behind their rivals Rega Lysborg. The two teams have entered a kind of dance as the season wound down, with one team gaining the lead, only for the other to snatch it back the following week. Other than the two front runners, Kosmo Lunaris was a team still in the hunt for the title, and they looked ready to pounce whenever one of the top two slipped up. While this has been a miraculous year for Roslund, this has also been a year of hell for Rega Lysborg. Two years ago, during the 06’-07’ season, the team went undefeated in their Kongensliga campaign, and then repeated as league title winners the following season. To now have the chance to lose out on a historic three-peat to a team they'd considered a road bump just a couple years prior was absurd, and frankly embarrassing. The deciding factor between Rega Lysborg’s and Roslund Mirakaler’s team seemed to be chemistry. Roslund's players were good, but they were a much more cohesive unit compared to Rega’s group of superstars. The Mirakaler’s players were very close knit to each other, and to the community at large. It was common for the people to interact with the players when they bought their groceries, or picked their children up from school. This level of connection made their fans personally connected to their team, and the players personally connected to their city. This level of interaction is almost unheard of for Rega Lysborg. More often than not, their players were among the best football players in the nation, and were often treated as such. Most of them had private chefs, and their children went to some of the best private schools in Greater Lysborg, leading to few interactions with regular citizens.

Rega Lysborg’s squad at the time had a lot of conflicting personalities, with a lot of the players feeling like they were the star of the team. Rega manager Peter Strömberg, a former player of the team, tried to start the process of changing the team’s culture, but progress was slow, and the antics of the club’s divas frequently dotted the pages of Solgavden’s tabloids. The culture Emil Vardaman tried to instill in his team focused heavily on putting the club first, and that every player was no better than his compatriot. There was no ball-hogging, or attempts at padding stats, every player contributed to the team, and every player would reap the rewards from their success. This attitude was most evident in the team’s distribution of goals, as while the lead included strikers like Adrian Claeys and Rudi Elmerssan, the rest of the players were pretty even after that, with even defenders like Kris Holzer having a high number of goals. These differences in team culture would be painfully obvious in the next meeting between Roslund and Lysborg.

Match 28, Rega Lysborg vs. Roslund Mirakaler, a game that most Roslund fans would mark on their calendar before the season began, and most Rega fans would forget was even going to occur. Yet this year, Prince Theodor Park, home of Rega Lysborg, was packed, as this game would likely decide the league title. Star striker Sig Halvorsan would open the scoring by shooting a cannon wide outside the penalty box, something that seemed to be his signature move. Even veteran keepers struggled at stopping Halvorsan’s shots, so it seemed to be forgiving if an 18 year old keeper like Hugo Krebs couldn’t get a finger on it. Yet, after his early mistake, Krebs would lock down the net for the rest of the game, stopping whatever Rega Lysborg’s frustrated strikers would throw at him, even stopping a similar shot from Halvorsan late in the game. Wingback Theo Granath would tie the game for Roslund late in the second half, ending the game with an anticlimactic draw that would leave more questions unanswered. For Roslund, the draw was confirmation enough that they did belong amongst the best of the Kongensliga, and should give it their all towards winning the league. While for Rega Lysborg, the draw left showed glaring problems that had to be addressed sooner or later, as the final matchday seemed to draw ever closer.

OOC: This views in this blog post are purely IC criticism.

Blog of Anna Bakunawa
Die-hard fan of the Agilang Dilaw National Football Team

Hey, it's me, Anna Bakunawa, and I am here for a short but sweet blog entry for the Agilang Dilaw and their entry to the Cup of Harmony tournament.

It was a disheartening ending for our players clad in yellow that we had to miss out of the playoffs, just by head to head over our fellow Esportivans TJUN-ia. We dealt our end of the bargain, beating two no-name sides, but the Jaguars held their own as well (and actually Choppyhausen, but since the other two teams won their matches, the chances of them taking the playoff spot in Group 20 dwindled). Now our outstanding performance in the second half of qualifying in which we did not even lose a single match earned us an invitation from the World Cup Council through the hosts Zwangzug and Busoga Islands for the Cup of Harmony. Our nation had been absent from this competition for two editions running, as hosts from those editions did not see us as a promising entrant for those competitions.

As you can see from my latest live vlog, I am still here in San Marco, Why you ask? It is because one of the hosts did not bother to post publicly where our team will play. We were drawn to Group 8 in Busoga Islands, but we still have not received any information on where the Agilang Dilaw will play. Where do I strategically book my hotel rooms and accommodation? Those stupid Indos would tell me to go to the capital and hope for the best route, but that may cost me big time money. I am funding this blog from my personal money and I have not been involved in any betting sponsorships unlike other vloggers there. Don't worry though, once they post the locations of the matches, I will immediately book a ticket to Busoga and watch the national team live.

Let's talk about the group that we will play in. According to the schedule, we will face top seeded Drawkland first, then third seeded Seeberg, and then Yangchenia, before facing Warkus after a bye day. I think we were drawn the short stick here, we were the worst second seed in the tournament if you will base it from the KPB+ rankings, and facing the top seeds first would cause us probably to lose ground, which we do not want at the start of the campaign. Also, since none of the opponents we were drawn against are based in Esportiva, we will probably NOT be seeing the Fourth kit Libertad Sportswear made in this tournament. Anyway, that was the luck of the draw, let's talk more of the teams we will facing.

Drawkland got here as they lost their playoff match against Farfadillis after a 2nd place finish in Group 26. The Kick Corps have insane kits supplied by Ediraf, and based on the performances of the team, we would hope to get a draw at least, but let's be honest, we will lose our first match here. Next is Seeberg, who like us was so close in securing a playoff spot - should they have beaten Vixette on the final qualifying window. Their kits are an all red primary and an all white alternate, but we do not have an info whether those kits were manufactured locally or by an international company. Maybe Libertad could supply them if they want to? We should win this crucial match if we are to progress from the Group stages. We go to Yangchenia, who has a website that prominently depicts their larger than life national team players, and the Blazing Dragons displays their logo prominently like a kit sponsor in their kits. They finished fifth in Group 13 of 8 nations, as Jeruselem were expectedly expelled from the World Cup qualifying due to allegations of indecent activity. Calling Libertad Sportswear, please contact this nation. This is a promising team but their kits look horrendous, with them only having one kit. If there are any readers from Yangchenia, please reach out to their FA to contact me so I can refer them to Libertad. A dangerous side still that we can be upset by them in the third matchday. Lastly, we will face Warkus, which finished fourth in Group 24. The Doves have a local brand supplying their kits and I say it is pretty neat despite only having one base color. We still should be favorites for this one.

Now I mentioned that I am admittedly a fashion police with our kits, but I had read one article from a Recuecn regarding the kits teams wore over the 100 editions of the World Cup. And I have to say I am disappointed of no mentions of Libertad or even NNS in the article. Like, one of the most prominent recent champions in Banija, wearing the NNS kits in World Cup 86! I would humbly ask their research department if their source material is adequate to release such an article discussing kits. Or maybe you guys would want me to connect to the guys at Libertad so we can provide kits to you and they can show that they can compete with the likes of Kirola, ediraf, Nerio, Barrengeka, and Vulpine Sportif to name a few.

That's it for me. Hopefully I can do a live vlog in Busoga Islands once we get the location info we need. More power!

Jack sat in his office, thinking about his team’s next big competition: The 92nd Cup of Harmony. It was time for Warkus’s third go at it, apparently. They got their second invite in a row, the first time that’s ever happened, under Jack’s leadership. The team was drawn from Pot 4 into Group 8. Jack took out his green A4 notebook, which was part of a newly branded stationary set given to the coaches, with ‘Cup of Harmony 92’ scribbled messily on the cover. He wonders briefly whether anyone in the FA will complain about him writing on the cover – they’d given him a wide berth in the past, but it seems like the kind of the thing that the geriatrics on the FA would get their knickers in a twist over.

He went over his notes on the opponents the team would be facing, written in the order they’d be playing them. Drawkland are up first. They’re ranked 32nd in the world, making them the third strongest team in the entire competition in terms of rank. Drawkland narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification after finishing second in their group by a single point and losing their playoff game against Farfadillis. They’re the obvious favourites to finish first. An all-female side that plays an attacking 3-4-3 and tends to leave their opponents completely exhausted by the late game. Jack has scribbled a bunch of tactical diagrams indicating various different ‘game phases’ that might come up or be worth exploiting. The two highlighted points, however, simply read “this will be a midfield battle” and “train endurance”.

The Seeberg game will come after that. It’s their first ever cycle, but they’ve already made quite the impact. They’re already climbed up to 87th in the rankings after making the Quarter Finals in the Baptism of Fire. It looks like they play a much more balanced tactic than Drawkland – a classic 3-5-3. There’s no point even thinking about a potential midfield battle here. Using wingers to create space behind their fullbacks is the obvious move, but we’ll be very vulnerable in the centre. Jack predicts this game will be messy regardless of the result.

Then there’s Yangchenia. Another debuting team, Yangchenia are now ranked 148th in the world. They got group’d in the Baptism of Fire, but they impressed in the World Cup Qualifiers. Jack knows everyone’s going to make comparisons between this Yangchenia team and last cycle’s Warkus. Jack’s Warkus entered the last Cup of Harmony ranked 149th, just one rank below Yangchenia’s current spot. The narrative is nice, Jack thought, but the comparisons are more superficial than they initially seem. This cycle had far more newcomers and returning teams than the last, so if Yangchenia had entered last time around they’d probably be ranked even higher. They’re an attacking side, but they play a 4-4-2 diamond. Finally, a more conventional matchup. But, if anything, Jack’s notes are even more scatterbrained here: “exploit single pivot?”, “forwards sit deep to disrupt their midfield?”, “go back 5 to defend lead?”, and, as always, “press high”.

Last but not least, there’s Sangti and the Filindo Isles. The only team we’ve played before. Even better than that, they’re a team we have a perfect record against. We were a bogey team for them in the World Cup 99 Qualifiers, beating them 5-2 at home and 2-1 away. But that was a difficult cycle for them and they’re a different team now, having barely missed out on the playoffs on goal difference. They play a slightly defensive 4-2-1-3, but they’re an experienced side that knows how to use set pieces effectively and exploit their opponent’s weaknesses. Jack’s scribbled down a bunch of their set pieces to study and prepare for, although his notes make it clear he doesn’t think there’s enough time to train the team to counter them.

Then there’s the question of expectations. Per his last meeting with the FA, he’s managed to get away with entering yet another competition with no genuine performance expectations. But this time he’s been given a real deadline: there will be an expected performance minimum for next cycle’s qualifiers. The lingering patience is helpful, though. Plus, the nature of the Cup of Harmony makes it an inherently less stressful affair. That and Eirian, who’s been a much needed friend and confidant ever since the qualifiers. He’s kept in touch with her since then – in fact, they just had a late breakfast together in this very office.

His thoughts are interrupted a phone call. The new guy on the FA committee, the one who’d been given the job of liaising with him since the qualifiers ended. Jack thinks to himself that he’ll have to remember the guy’s name at some point – he’s straight up listed as ‘new FA guy’ in his phone contacts. They go through the generic pleasantries before the new FA guy gets to the reason he’s calling.

“Look, it’s none of our business what you do in your personal life or who you choose to be in a relationship with…” said the new FA guy.

“Uh… I don’t quite understand where you’re going with this.”, Jack replied. Relationship? Personal life? He had no clue what this could be about. Did his ex from university go to the press and blab about how he was a crappy boyfriend or something?

“We just… We would like to remind you to act with, well… the proper level of professionalism and decorum as befits the manager of a national team and…”, the new FA guy carried on.

“No, seriously. Can you tell me what this is about? I don’t appreciate you implying I might be acting unprofessionally when you’re being so vague about it.”, Jack replied with frustration in his voice.

“…To put it bluntly, we’re asking you to be careful and professional and perhaps consider your position regarding your, uh, well, not to be too explicit about it, but, your romantic… partnership… thing, whatever it is, with Queen Eirian.”, the new FA guy relented.

Self-fulfilling prophecies and hubris against Pythagoras

Nothing will ever replicate Eastfield Lodge's turbulent history with the World Cup.

That's the fact of the matter, and it's the hard truth for any unfortunate nation attempting to feel sorry for itself.

With tournament numbers decreasing continually and formats becoming easier and easier to qualify out of, it is virtually impossible to be that unlucky for that long a time.

However.

Dhemixia, somehow across all sports, has become the "modern" Eastfielder National Team that carried the curse for what felt like an eternity.

That's a lofty assertion and honestly rubs off as a nation attempting to feel sorry for itself (of which it actively is), but it feels increasingly like the truth for anyone who cares enough about the nation to watch their sporting teams seriously. Why else do you think the Serpents are in the CoH for the third consecutive cycle?

The reason I say that stems from an omniscient force seemingly obligating every Dhemixian National Team to fail.

No, seriously, they do that quite a lot.

The nation is collectively 2-13 in knockout games/series (depending on the sport's format). You might be wondering then, "they won two whole series, how is that generationally bad?".

Well, to put it bluntly, those meant absolutely nothing, and weren't even technically done in a major by a national team.

The first came in the 3PPO of a 10-nation Baptism of Fire, which you can probably reason out yourself to be the least they could do.

The second came in the first round of the playoffs in NSCF 31, of which is competing domestic colleges and not even national teams.

The Serpents seem physically incapable of actually winning a knockout game, but the worst part stems from the fact that, to lose in said knockout, you have to get there in the first place.

They don't exactly do that well either.

WBC 61 in West Pavola and WCQ100 jointly hosted by The Kytler Peninsulae amongst others (i'm starting to notice a pattern here) were the most egregious examples of such failure.

Both instances were absolute pythagorean masterclasses that somehow managed to get straight grouped (without the playoffs) and Dhemixia will never recover from either of them.

It makes you wonder if they've committed a crime against Pythagoras that will never be forgiven on their own.

Margaret knew what she was doing when she grouped Eastfield Lodge with Dhemixia.
It's empty.

"Chess? Seriously?" Not-Quite-Hazing-Under-Martian-Law Planner #1 was unimpressed.

"It's all about the theme, Gavin. We're playing TJUN-ia at the Cup of Harmony and at the World Chess Championships, and it's easier to make a chess puzzle than a football puzzle. How would a football puzzle even work, anyway?" NQHUML Planner #2 just needed Gavin to see the vision.

"We're not playing TJUN-ia for another week. Besides, this is a bad puzzle. There aren't any winning moves, several moves are within 1 point of equality, and 'white to play and be roughly equal' is unexciting." Gavin did not, in fact, see the vision.

"It's about playing to lose. There's a quite tricky sequence, but if you're good at bottling it, like the Spiders, you'll be able to find it." NQHUML Planner #2 was already regretting bringing Gavin on. It had been 2 minutes and 21 seconds.

"So this is about showing disdain towards our national team, then, Hugh? When I joined this group, I thought it was the brightest minds in all of the MIR. If I wanted to spend time with a bunch of grumpy and miserable nerds, I could just sit down anywhere in the north."

"My name's Ugo."

"Might as well be Ego by how good you think your ideas are."

"At least I have original ideas, unlike you."

"I leave for three minutes and you guys are already fighting-"

"Shut up, Richard." At least that was something they could agree on.

White to move and be mated in four moves

As Busoga calls DNQs, etc. for games hosting international japes, Katzenburg likes Martian national odds: "Perhaps, quite remarkably, Spiders triumph unexpectedly, verily winning XCII - yes, Zwangzug"

After bad coordination during eventual failure, going horribly (it's justified: Kelssek loss, maybe not others), possible quick rebound sends twenty-three, unready, via Warkus (?!), Xenia Young zings: "Youngsters, xenonervous, worse visiting unknown terrain; Spiders reasonably quit past opening." Now, many losers kinda just invited here; games for everyone, despite collapses, baffling Aeolites.

Although calmer commentators don't leash themselves, vows Young: "Sucking Spiders, restricted phrases."

RP prompt #2: Talk about the unity in your squad for this tournament. Did you get here with recriminations after having failed to qualify for the World Cup? Is there discord in your locker room? Or is there harmony, as people have moved on and the focus is on earning the trophy on offer in Busoga & Zwangzug?

Free Republics Locker Room
City Athletic Venue, Arlington, Zwangzug

Prior to the match, Koby Theodore prepared a speech to his team:

Koby Theodore - Boys, I know these dramatic speeches are usually something you'd just tune out. It's a movie cliche that coaches usually don't do in real life. But I want to make a bit of an exception today. I have read the international press reports prior to this Cup of Harmony and have found that you are being disrespected and overlooked by the international press. As well as by the coaches of the other teams. Exhibit A would be the comments from Camilla Arentas, the coach of Snestar. Keep in mind that this is a BoF nation that has literally accomplished nothing as of yet. Her words, as reported by the media of Snestar are:

Snestar wrote:I don't want to jinx it, but we've been very lucky with the group draws. Part of me wants to feel bad about poor Dēmos and Choppyhausen, but the rest of me wants to pop out a bottle of Bellamora wine and celebrate for an entire night. Getting drawn with Saterun and Carpathia and Ruthenia, some of the lowest-ranked teams in Pots 1 and 2, makes me believe that we'll be able to at least secure third place comfortably. We'll surely have to watch out for Soviet Kem, whom we'll face as our first opponent. Wish them the best of luck, and may the better team win.

Koby Theodore - Notice which of the nations in our group the manager of Snestar couldn't even be bothered to acknowledge? The one that has actually won a World Cup! One of two that has actually won a Cup of Harmony! One of two that has actually won an Independents Cup! We're a 4 time World Cup semifinalist yet the coach of the 4th place team from this year's BoF thinks we're not even worth mentioning! And it clearly isn't because we're easy to beat. The last time you boys played, you beat Yuezhou 2 goals to nil at Imperator Stadium. You managed a draw with Juvencus. You finished 3rd in your qualifying group, which is better than 4th place Snestar. The only reason you weren't in the playoffs was because Sernet is Him, as they say in Sernet. And this is how we performed with a team where every single player is currently under the age of 18! If you boys were in your primes right now, I believe you'd be making a deep run like my generation did twice. Like Love and Archie's generation also did twice. Based on the potential I've seen so far, I believe that this is the best generation yet of the Republican National Soccer Team. It's just unbelievable that some random BoF nation would disrespect us like that. Likewise, I was unable to find any acknowledgement in the medias of Soviet Kem, Saterun or Carpathia and Reuthenia that they are sharing a group with one of the most decorated soccer nations in the multiverse. The only way to make them respect us is to get results on the pitch. Make your talent undeniable. Show them that you are truly worthy of wearing those jerseys that 2 great generations have worn before you. Get 3 points today on Black Friday and give your classmates something to celebrate!

Koby Theodore hoped his team would respond but he also had no intention to make pre-match speeches a routine occurrence.

The clock hit 85 minutes and the Free Republics supporters section launched into a performance of the song War Beneath the Rain (OOC: This is the clearest audio I could find on Youtube that isn't digitally altered. To the best of my knowledge, there is no publicly released studio version of the song at this moment.), which had recently risen to #1 on the charts in the Free Republics:

If we all learn to die
Can most of us forget
That we're not waiting for the end?

The decision to have the supporters sing the song starting at exactly 85 minutes had been made by the Grand Immortal Imperator himself and discreetly communicated via Lady Nova to Dr. Kennedy and the rest of the Barjavel Academy faculty with instructions to make sure that the soccer team itself was left completely in the dark. In the Free Republics, the hologram technology picked up the Barjavel student body's singing and chanting, piping it into the stadiums via the speakers. Videos quickly went viral of crowds at stadiums throughout the Free Republics singing along.

The impact on the Republican players was immediately noticeable and may have been the deciding factor in a match that was 2-2 at the 85th minute. Peter Savage caught a Clara Bassi shot and immediately throw it to Hippolyte Vargas on the wing. The Republicans got forward quickly and Vargas would find Sebastian Andersen just outside of the box. Andersen took a long shot at the net that hit off the post just past the arms of a diving Federica Antonini. On the rebound, Dennis Hoffman would quickly tap it in before Antonini could get back to her feet. And just as the supporters had finished the song.

Carpathia and Ruthenia would get a few chances before the end of the match but the Republican defense held and the final score would be 3 goals to 2. Next up for the Free Republics would be a match against Snestar, the nation whose manager had disrespected them. This gave them extra motivation to secure 3 more points and potentially doom Snestar to yet another 4th place finish.

Following the match, the Republican supporters section emptied and the entire Barjavel Academy student body and faculty prepared to relocate to Zwischen for the next 2 matchdays. For the Carpathia and Ruthenia match, the entire section except for the cheerleading squad had worn a skin-tight black button up shirt, skin-tight black pants and black shoes. They looked more like the crowd you'd see at a concert than a soccer crowd which was the intent. But this was not a tactic that was going to be effective in every single match. Which meant they would need to vary their approach from match to match to keep the opposition guessing. Yet, War Beneath the Rain starting at 85:00 would be an every match fixture for the Republican National Team going forward.

To go to Zwischen, the Republicans would need to take the #5 Intercity Express line. The task of negotiating with the robots to buy out sufficient trains to relocate the entire delegation fell to Dr. Kennedy. Fortunately, this didn't prove overly difficult as the Republican government had given its Cup of Harmony delegation a blank checkbook. This made it very easy to manipulate the robots, easier than if there was a human who might have some bizarre and stupid "principles" about how nobody should get special treatment. Hence why the Republicans managed to rent out an entire hotel in each of their group's host cities. By securing their own private trains, they would be able to use the train ride to discuss tactics and plan how supporters, cheerleaders and players alike would approach the Snestar match.

In the Republican locker room and amongst the delegation, there was a clear sense of unity and harmony. Nobody had seriously expected a teen of high school students to qualify for the World Cup. The fact that they had finished third and finished qualifying with a victory over Yuezhou that ended their qualification hopes was well above expectations. It was simply a matter of making some magic happen at the Cup of Harmony to prove that the third generation had what it takes to be a serious contender for trophies in the future...

The Wingback Who Took Off

A Günther von Tulpe Mystery

Part 2: Ain't no such things as halfway crooks

«There’s numerous ways you can choose to earn funds,» said Sigismund Schiltze and adjusted his feathered green felt cap, «and manipulating the youth of today with tingles of spiritual journeys and promises of perennial truths is definitely one, however…»

Günther put up his hand and smiled, which was the universal sign to make Herr Schiltze pause, because it was common knowledge that he had a tendency to discourse protractedly, on both today and tomorrow and the many yesterdays of days gone by, if left unchecked.

…

The unusual request from Director Freudlingen had left Günther bemused and intrigued. In the past, he had assisted the SFV with clearing up things like minor (and sometimes major) theft, or rooting out the cause for random upheavalist behaviour within their ranks. This time, he had been asked to investigate a missing person. This sort of thing might be better suited for The Gemeinsame Polizeikorps, Günther had suggested, but Director Freudlingen made it clear that he wanted no involvement from the capital polizei.

The Director had declined to elaborate on his reasons, but Günther suspected it had to do with a wish to avoid having the taint of scandalism smeared all over the SFV name. The GP’s capital division had a reputation for being leaky, and just as an underproofed dough surely yields a heavy loaf, their involvement in this matter would all but guarantee the missing winback splashed across the front page of Brinterbergundia Daily by the next morning. Schlecht indeed.

The missing wingback was one Siegfried Löwenthal, a baker’s apprentice by trade, who was the first choice flying left defender for VfB Brinterberg in the Seebergundian SuperLiga, and had been an integral part of the Horkenheimer team that exceeded all expectations in the recent Baptism of Fire and World Cup qualifications.

Young Siegfried had been a part of The Horkenheimers’ preparations over the last few weeks, the Director had told Günther, but the boy failed to show up at the designated time when the Horkenheimer entourage was to start the arduous trek down from the high valleys beneath the great mountains. Their schedule was tight and left no room for waiting around, hence the designated time, leading them to depart sans young Löwenthal.

When SFV functionaries later searched for Löwenthal at his home address, up in the Münsterheim Quarter in the northern parts of fair Brinterberg, he was nowhere to be found. Their preliminary efforts had yielded no real insight, Director Freudlingen begrudgingly admitted, apart from the fact that Löwenthal’s family was apparently under the impression that the boy had in fact left Brinterberg together with the rest of The Horkenheimers.

Upon accepting the assignment of locating young Löwenthal, Günther had promptly invited his old friend Herr Schiltze for breakfast at the old Vergoldete Mackrell Bäckerei - on the corner of Grimmaische Straße and Gugelhupf Allee, in the Heilige Birgitta Quarter in the eastern parts of fair Brinterberg - to enlist his expertise.

And it was there that they were now seated.

Herr Schiltze was a veritable living encyclopedia of Seebergundian FußBall and had quickly educated Günther on the ins and outs of Siegfried Löwenthal’s development within the VfB Brinterberg youth academy, his promotion to their A-team and subsequent inclusion in the Horkenheim ranks prior to that fated Baptism of Fire. While undoubtedly interesting, if one is into that kind of thing, it was not until Herr Schiltze started getting into the personal life of young Siegfried, and especially his recent involvement in the reawakened theosophical scene, that Günther started paying real attention.

The theosophical crowd had been a minuscule, but steady, staple of life in eastern Brinterberg for as long as anyone could remember. Traditionally espoused by little old ladies wearing colorful scarves, it was a philosophy of sorts teaching that all spiritual paths share a common core of divine wisdom. Highly esoteric in nature, this knowledge was said to possibly, maybe, be attainable through an intricate blend of meditative self-realization techniques and interpretative eurythmics.

The home of this fringe movement was often thought to be the Theosophical Gesellschaft, who offered study circles and general Aufklärung up in their Jugend Villa - bequeathed to the Gesellschaft by former Kanzler Augustus von Jung many years ago, in a fit of senility if you were to ask his heirs - up on the slopes of Hügel Albrecht in the Baden-Baden-Baden Park, where you can see all the way to Knackwurst Platz in the south and the Puddingkuchen-Quadrat in the northwest.

Herr Schiltze had been going on about how you had always been able to count the number of Gesellschaft members, and those sympathetic to their cause, using only your hands, and for the longest time, Herr Schiltze explained, people had generally not given much notice to these eccentrics and their particular brand of papperlapapp. However, he continued, this had changed and increased interest in the offerings of the theosophists was undoubtedly a tendency in the current zeitgeist, especially so amongst the youngsters.

Günther was no stranger to this development, for the youth of today going around talking about mechanisms for spiritual evolution and the existence of hidden spiritual masters guiding humanity, all while doing eurythmic exercises to achieve a direct link with the übersinnliche world, was a hot topic of aggrieved conversation among the upstanding people of fair Brinterberg.

Herr Schiltze had continued going on at length about recent developments and how the little old ladies of the Gesellschaft weren’t the only ones peddling insights of the beyond in this brave new age world, especially after people of all ages had been exposed to tales about the apparent reality of magic, courtesy of Equestria’s talking horses and their hosting of the recent Baptism of Fire. And now, a new brand of theosophical gurus - often bearded men with a lot of charisma and a knack for grifting - had started appearing.

It was around this time that Günther held up his hand to interject.

«Our young Siegfried was involved with one of these new groups, I take it?» he asked, and Herr Schiltze nodded gravely while wiping the bier foam from his upper lip. «From what I understand, the boy has been attending gatherings in the alleys by Saiteninstrument Platz, with a crowd centered around a man named Friedrich Snietzschel.»

Günther frowned bemusedly. «Friedrich Snietzschel? Really?» he asked, and Herr Schiltze nodded enthusiastically. «Yes, do you know him?»

«I know of him,» Günther said and got a disapproving look on his face. «A charlatan with a gift for corrupting impressionable minds. Last I heard of him, he was a leading figure in the purpleshirt revivalist scene down in the cellar pubs by Ordensgemeinschaft Straße.»

Herr Schiltze laughed and shook his head. Günther sat in silence, pondering what he had learned, and then nodded contently. «Well, it seems I need to see a man about a Snietzschel.»

Lions Primed For Calgasian Challenge
Dantopian Men's National Team Set To Face 'Der Adler' In Zwangzug

5 Biyambi 1 0 0 1 1 3 -2 0
SHARAG, ZWANGZUG — The Dantopian National Team will face their first, and arguably most challenging test in the Cup of Harmony, when they line up against 50th in the world ranked Calgasia at Sector 32 Park in Sharag, Zwangzug. The Lions missed out on the fun of match-day 1 — which saw 'Der Adler' defeat Biyambi 3-1, and Woodsmere upset Hapilopper 2-1 — and will have to settle for their first game in match-day 2 against a now top of the group side. Dantopia haven't played a higher ranked nation since Chromatika in the qualifying group stages of World Cup 100, and the match-up against Karel Polásek's side will certainly prove a difficult affair for Rick Bishop's men. A slightly deeper dive into the tactics of the Calgasian side can be found in this previous edition of the Lion City Leader.

Image
Michael Danchevy
However, the mood in the camp is positive, with Lions players talking up their chances against their fellow Group 1 opposition. "We haven't come all this way simply to be fodder for other teams..." remarked team captain Michael Danchevy. "We know we aren't favourites in the slightest, but the team are also all completely confident in our abilities. We have what it takes to do well in this competition, and we aim to show this when we get out on the pitch. We're going to put our stamp on games, as best we can."

Image
Rick Bishop
The national team spent the night at their camp watching, and then critically analysing the games from Group 1. Calgasia's win over Biyambi was an expected result, but the Scorchers were able to poke holes in the Calgasian defence at times, and Rick Bishop's coaching team believe they can form a game plan to get the better of 'Der Adler'. "We're going to drill the lads hard on the game-plan against Calgasia. We need total concentration to match up against their attacking five. I know the team have what it takes to absorb the pressure and pounce on the opportunities that do come our way, we just need to stay switched on and laser-focussed." opined the national team manager, who's record of 8 games won from 16 with the Lions has been received warmly by the press and fans alike back home in Dantopia.

Bishop's system isn't overly intricate, but simply aims to put the Lions' best players in their strongest positions on the pitch. The box midfield created by young Kaleb Kahananui naturally inverting in helps the team maintain possession when they are on the front-foot, and also creates a solid 3-2 rest defence shape to protect against counter-attacks. However, it is almost certain that Dantopia will be on the back-foot, not the front-foot, against the Calgasians, and as a result, the game-plan will have to change. Kahananui and Will Cross will be occupied out wide, as they will likely be tasked with man-for-man marking against the very forward-thinking wingbacks of the Calgasian 3-4-1-2 formation.

Image
Dani Spaghetti
The stretching of the pitch by Dantopia's match-day two opposition will mean defensive co-ordination in the middle from centre backs Keegan Foster and Emerson Cromwell, and defensive midfielder Dani Spaghetti, will have to be clear and concise throughout the match. It would not be surprising to see Spaghetti man-mark Emil Sedlácek, following the bright and talented Melperk Sport Verein player like his own shadow. The Grenadiers veteran is certainly not averse to such defensive jobs, but depending on how ragged Sedlácek runs him, might need replacing with a Nehemiah Cunningham or Kai Watanabe in the second half.

Image
Johnny Kealoha
Dantopia's attack will perhaps find more luck on the counter-attack, utilising the threat of their pace in behind. All three of Danchevy, Brunson and Adeyemi possess the type of blistering pace that can keep opposition defenders up at night, and whilst manager Rick Bishop's system isn't one that only exploits counter-attacking football, it is certainly well-adapted to it when the time is right. The creativity of Dantopia's midfielders — especially Johnny Kealoha, who's four goals and nine assists really propelled the Lions beyond expectations in the World Cup qualifiers — will be critical to opening up chances for the fast front three. Expect line-cutting through balls and long, lofted passes over the top from Kealoha, who has a knack for unlocking even the most difficult of defences with his expert vision.

With a content and unified team in his camp, Rick Bishop will definitely be expecting a solid first performance from his side. Whether the Lions can stick rigidly to his game-plan, that is going to be the real test, as Calgasia presents a very real threat of humiliation for Dantopia, with the sides being so far apart in the world rankings. Concentration will be key to the success or failure against 'Der Adler' in match-day two. The travelling supporters are anticipating a very eventful affair, and are excited to passionately cheer their Lions team on in Zwangzug.

Expected Line-up against Calgasia
A. Bullvale — W. Cross — E. Cromwell — K. Foster — K. Kahananui — D. Spaghetti — E. Cunningham — J. Kealoha — A. Adeyemi — B. Brunson — M. Danchevy (C)

FORMER LITHUANIAN PRIME MINISTER SIMONAS ŠAPOKA KIDNAPPED

The nation is in shock as Simonas Šapoka, the former prime minister of the Lithuanian region, was kidnapped on Monday from his home near the city of Pastavys, approximately 100 km northeast of Vilnius. Šapoka is one of a trio kidnapped alongside two former high-ranking officials from the regional police, Švitrigaila Grikevičius and Vladas Merkevičius. Security footage showed the residences being stormed by masked figures who surprised and carried off the victims. The high-profile and coordinated nature of the kidnappings has led to speculation that they may be politically motivated.

Šapoka earned his start as a military officer combatting the Slavic insurgency that plagues the southern and eastern regions of Lithuania approximately 30 years ago. After a highly successful military career, he eventually entered regional politics, being elected as an MP, and then working his way through the ranks of the Social Democratic Party (one of the two major parties in the region) to eventually become Prime Minister. Despite being reviled by the Slavic population of the region because of the heavy-handed tactics utilized by the military, Šapoka was able to earn electoral success thanks to the voter-suppression policies and widespread gerrymandering that limit the influence of the Slavic population in regional politics.

Šapoka ran for the regional presidency in the highly controversial election that occurred at the same time as qualification for World Cup 99, placing third in the eventually-annulled first round despite initially being a favorite to advance to hypothetical runoff. Following this surprising defeat, he resigned as leader of the Social Democratic Party but announced that he would stay on as Prime Minister until a party leadership contest could be held. In the protests that occurred in the aftermath of the presidential election’s annulment and the arrest of front-runner Domantas Sabonis, even a caretaker position became untenable for Šapoka’s government, and he resigned in favor of Dainius Dirgėla as acting prime minister.

Also kidnapped alongside Šapoka are his former Minister for Internal Security, Švitrigaila Grikevičius, and former head of the Lithuania Police, Vladas Merkevičius, both of whom are also known for their role in the at times violent suppression of the region’s recent protests. The controversial political roles of all three victims have led to speculation that the kidnappers are members of one or more banned insurgent groups. Although the insurgency had been mostly dormant for nearly three decades. Thus far, no specific group has claimed responsibility for the incident and police have not yet stated any group as probable suspects.

Dēmos Vs Dhemixia: Part I

Postby Atymnius » Sat Nov 29, 2025 9:07 am

MATCHDAY 1:
DĒMOS VS DHEMIXIA

Image
Mike: Good day everyone! My name is Mike Hattenborough coming to you live from Keppal City’s Ayathen Arena, Zwangzug. Our matchday fixture today is Dēmos vs Dhemixia, live right here on the Dēmosian News Network! What do you expect to see in terms of football from the first match live, Apostoli?

Apostoli: Hello everyone! My name is Apostoli Apostoleris and I’m proud to bring you the best of the 92nd Cup of Harmony alongside my good friend Mike! Yes, Mike, it seems top seed Dhemixia is to go against Dēmos, 87th Baptism of Fire contestants. I’m excited to bring you more!

The commentators grabbed their chairs as matchday one ensued. The Ayathen is busy with Greco-Roman spectators from around the globe. Of them, three Dēmosian starting XI l players, unknowingly, are absent from the matchday.

Alexi: Where is Valentinos?! Where is Henrickh…

The manager hurriedly glanced at the No. 1 locker.

It was empty.

Alexi: WHERE IS MY GOALKEEPER!!!?

In the meanwhile the whereabouts of such participants were met with a shaking of heads amongst teammates.

Scratching his head in confident confusion, Tý sat down.

Tý: I heard this arena was haunted.

Alexi: Ugh!

The manager stormed out of the locker rooms for superstitions of mediocrity (as one would think they were) were far enough.

Dhemixia was on their way.

A: Mike, it seems as if Dēmos have changed their line-up today I presume?

M: Indeed! The team formation remains the same but we look to see Armani at posts accompanied by Sera at the back. In midfield, replacing Valentinos, we’ve got Yuriel Östhmanthus!

Yüriel Osthmanthus, or simply Ozzy the Cat, was most adept for the team when the first XI were short on numbers. A deep, lying playmaker known for the manager’s leniency on him playing out of position. He would, as one would imagine, stalk his prey with elaborately crafted mouse-traps that would swarm any opponent’s midfield in a quadrille. A quadrille full of Cockroaches.

He loved, like his Vice-Captain, the thrill of the chessboard but unlike him, loved also the game that a young-one would never understand (as he would often say).

Yuriel Östhmanthus: Ghant, the problem is not that you don’t love, but rather too much.

Sometimes even the best men like you, often forget.

The game kicks off.

Alexi: Today we will play our usual Tiki-Taka football, but because of Oggy, we will do our famous Pentahedron.

As the ball was dominated in the first 20 minutes by Östhmanthus, a quick electrostatic air filled the Arena.

The ball was circulated amongst midfielders too quickly for Dhemixia to pick up.

One, two…

Three…

Four?

On the fifth succession of the Pentahedron, Östhmanthus fell
.

M: GOAALL! Excellent service by the substitute! Oggy

Image

A: And the Cockroaches!

The two commentators laughed.

Östhmanthus: Kneel to your elders! Dēmos Avalinñea!

After a succession of cries and cheers, the game began once more.

The whistle blew and yet…

Ozzy fell.

THE PENTAHEDRON

Narrator: The Dēmos Pentahedron, a famous Tiki-Taka overdrive cultivated by Alexi himself, consists of multiple ball passes in a roulette-like fashion amongst the entire Dēmos regional midfield. A tactic of much-needed energy, it can create counter-attacking opportunities very easily but on the adverse lead to a significant drain of energy.

Getting up, the Dhemixian attack spared no crumbs!

M: Oh, it is Obisana on the ball!

Pacing towards the edge of the opponents midfield, he kicked a magnificent Zestalana-style corner into the Dēmos box!

Alexi: Östhmanthus! Get up for the counter! GET UP!

For Oggy, a radio-silence for him, in Dēmos tradition, was perhaps a bit too old. Too old to keep up with the tradition of young-players bred within the Blue Lock. These platers, bred to dominate old, gantry men.

A: Goal! Excellent header by Boltz!

Boltz or otherwise known as Bolton, as quick as their physical counterpart, was the very antithesis of the Pentahedron, a Kryptonite of Speed against deflated old men.

But indeed, for Yuriel. Something, switched.

Something innate.

In the background a murmur of the match’s beginnings into the 35th minute was given. It was game time.

Tý: Pass here.

Yuriel: No wait…

Tý: Bro, Clarke has blocked your lane, just pass!

Yuriel: Wait…

Breathing effervescence in the air, Yuriel made a Herculean pose as he showed his bodily fluids to the limelight.

M: The ball is in the air! It was kicked straight-up by Yuriel!

Image

Östhmanthus: Cockroaches

Do you know what cockroaches are Tý?

Tý: Wtf?! NO!

Yuriel: Ah yes!

Who ordained the stampede fall of sandals on these defenseless creatures?

Or is it their love of darkness

Hold them suspect?

Kicking the ball as it went down, the ball kicked into the shins of surrounding players.

Yuriel: It is because they are like pingballs in a lotto!

Gotta catch ‘em all!

Tý: HUH?

The ball turn-styled across the entire midfield of Dhemixia—Hutchinson, Bush, Clarke—all of them. It completely only touched them once for one second, squashing each insect one by one, until…

Until it reached the Spanish Salamander’s feet…

A: Goal! Rafail caught the ball on the volley! A magnificent bicycle kick!

The crowd sat still for mere moments, getting up, trumpeting their return, harking a glorious:

Everyone: WOAH!

Another miracle was seen.

But it was not enough. For indeed, in saying that it was enough, did the Dhemixian Snakes, Cockroaches, Ants for whatever they’re called, say triumphantly that it was not.

THAT WAS NOT ENOUGH! ENTERTAIN US HARDER DĒMOS!

Only grabbed the momentum equally so.

Half-time passed and a group of three moronic individuals watched on from their isolated dorms…

Watching their team play.

To be continued.

Slowly, the 26 players, along with the four staff members, settled down in one of the conference rooms of the hotel that the Saterun national team was staying at. Their first match of the Cup of Harmony was the next day, and Handrix wanted to get in one final tactical briefing. "Quite down, everyone. Adrian, find another seat. Crespo was there first. Dante, could you turn on the projector? Thanks. Alright, let me just get this set up on my laptop. These things are always so hard to use. Is it SDTC 1 or 2? 1? Ok. Wait. I think I got it. Yep. There it is. Alright we're gonna start soon. Lads!". With that final word, the team hushed and turned attentively to their manager. "Alright guys, let's get started. Today we're gonna be going over our next two opposition reports, especially the game we have tomorrow. We've gotten an extra day to rest, so it's vital that we take advantage. Before I go into the specifics of our next game, I want to emphasize how important it is that we start on the front foot. We need to control the ball and take chances. A good start could see us move into a prime position, while a bad start could make our job much harder."

"Tomorrow, we're taking on a nation called Soviet Kem. They're fellow Indies, and finished fifth place in their WCQ group. They also just beat Snestar 1-0 yesterday, but that was a pretty easy match for them to start. They play somewhat similar to us, actually, except in a very narrow formation." Handrix then pulled up a formation graphic showing where each Kem starter would likely be. "Hans, Crespo, all of my outside midfielders, this is your game. We're gonna carry the ball down the wings, then cross it into the middle. I want to see lots, and I mean lots, of crosses. This team is also relatively young, so Matt, Maksymillian, Masoud, I want you guys to use your physicality to dominate in the air. Maksymillian is going to be our main target for crosses, try to deliver it to his head. On defense, I want my wingbacks to tuck in. They likely won't attack down the wings, so compress the middle and watch for any through balls. Our toughest challenge will be in the midfield, where they hold the numerical advantage. Oscar, Vidar, I'm expecting you guys to win the ball and then get it out wide. Once it's there, we can control the ball. But we can't give it up cheaply and then concede on the counter."

With that, Handrix switched over to his slide about their next opponents, Free Republics. "Alright lads, this'll probably be a tougher test, so lets get some points on the board against Soviet Kem so we have some breathing space here. Free Republics beat a more difficult opponent in their first matchday, and have had historic success that likely happened before some of you were even born. They have a young, quick team, but we need to use our experience. Once again, our outside midfielders will be key. It seems like everyone and their mother plays a narrow formation this year, so lets try to use our advantages. I'll talk more about this team the day before we play them, but for now, just focus on your wide play. If we get a solid cushion against Soviet Kem, practice getting the ball out wide and moving it quickly." Handrix then moved on to some more position-specific instructions. About an hour after they had started, the meeting was over. Handrix didn't usually do this before every match, and he certainly hadn't done it during WCQ, but the Cup of Harmony was far fewer games and he wanted to start strong this time. He was going to take every instance of preparation he could get.

*****

It was finally time. In the locker room of the City Athletic Venue, the Claws were getting ready for their opening match of this Cup of Harmony against Soviet Kem. Handrix was trying to be a calming presence for his players, but he couldn't help but be a bit nervous. It had been a few months since they narrowly missed out on the WCQ playoffs, and he didn't want a repeat of their qualifying start. However, he strongly believed in this team. They had been hard at work before the tournament, and he hoped the extra day of rest would give them a slight advantage. They were going to come out attacking, and he hoped to put a goal on the board quickly. As he was gathering his papers for the walkout, Adrian came up to him. "Look, gaffer, I know I'm not starting today, but I really think I can make a difference if we need it. Just keep me in mind." Handrix assured him that he would. Once that conversation finished, Handrix quickly got the attention of the rest of the squad. "Alright, lads, I'm gonna keep this brief. We need to start fast and strong. You've had a long time to rest. Now we're gonna take it to them. I want a goal in the first ten. And once we score that, do not let up. Let's go grab some points." With that, the squad cheered. Hopefully, his speech had done enough to inspire them just a bit more.

Out on the field, Handrix stood with his hands over his heart as the Saterun national anthem, or Qurtuk al-Handsaa, as it was called in Shaantam, was played. He knew that this tournament could be a defining moment in his national team career, but more than that he wanted to deliver something for the national team fans across the country. Some had even traveled for this tournament, and the ultras group was already getting loud. At the climax of the song, a huge tifo of a jaguar, the national animal, was unfurled. Handrix even thought he could see some flares starting to smoke in the center of the group. Hopefully, his players would be pushed on by their countrymen. Saterun usually did relatively well in home matches, and Handrix thought the fans were doing a pretty good job of making this match feel that way. Slowly, the players went down the Soviet Kem line, shaking hands before jogging off to their positions. Hans-Jürgen Becker shook hands with the opposition captain, and exchanged pennants. Saterun would start with the ball.

As Maksymillian Bates stood over the ball, time seemed to slow. Handrix was hit with everything he hoped to achieve with this tournament. At the very least, a decent knockout run. Maybe even more. But it all started with this match. If this went wrong, they'd have a mountain to climb. Part of that responsibility was on Handrix. He had tried to prepare as much as possible, but now it was up to them. At his side, Dante Fielan got the match reports pulled up on his tablet. While Handrix stood on the touchline, his assistant would use the wealth of data and information they had available to try to get an edge. Handrix stepped up near the touchline, his opposite number standing near the Soviet bench. It was time for Saterun's Cup of Harmony journey to begin. Handrix had no idea what would happen in the next few days, but he hoped they could start winning right here. With that, time resumed, and Maskymillian kicked the ball to start the game. They were off.

"A step too far."
"It was always a tough ask."
"The fairytale is over."

"I'm just proud of the guys." Oliver Thompson talks at the camera, cornered by the press after the game against Stewartika which saw Ethane's hopes of reaching the World Cup end in tears. He's proud. He presents an upset, but pleased demeanour.

"To come so close. No one expected this team to be in the fight for the world cup." He smiles sadly. "We had some really tough teams to play, and we just almost did it. But the Commonwealth of Baker Park were just too far."

"And why do you think there was such a gulf in performance in the playoffs despite the much smaller gap in rankings. "Yes, it was the lowest ranked playoff game considering the two teams, but this is the first world cup we've been fighting for in over 5 editions. You have to give the boys some slack. This is a team that hasn't played much together." Oliver shifted unformfortably.

"Us and Stewartika had great campaigns. For both of us, it was a gruelling fight. In the end, Stewartika had that little more left in the tank. Maybe in their squad depth - our rotation was limited due to a lack of depth across the games."

"Any regrets?", the journalist asked plainly.

"None. Why would I? They gave it their all. They fought as a team. They defended well."

"The defence was your biggest strength. Tell me why you set up your teams in that way?"

"We're inexperienced. I thought the only way we'd make it is by minimising mistakes, by keeping our games clean. Yes, you need some luck which we had a lot of fall our way and in some games, we didn't have it. But it doesn't matter if you win one-nil or win eight-one, the result is the same. Three points. Keep it tight at the back and all you need is that one opportunity. I trusted our backline would be resolute and disciplined enough to give us that opportunity every game. And I trusted that Damo would be the guy to find those opportunities at front - he really proved us right in the qualifiers, I was well impressed."

"Looking forward to the Cup of Harmony. Any chances for you?"

"Yes. We've shown we've got grit and fight. Our group is one I feel we can compete in - we're closer in rank now. Put aside what's happened before, we can win these games. What's interesting is that these are all our neighbours, we share a region with most of these teams. We know these guys better than we know many other countries. We can adapt. But we will fight, and we will still be keeping to the same core principles."

"What about your job? I'm sure you've heard the speculation that you're waiting for a big job and you'll go. Is there any truth to this?"

OIiver frowns. Right at the end, a question to trip him up. "We're focused on winning the Cup of Harmony at the moment. I can tell you that I am not going to be distracted by any speculation, I want to maintain the success and unity that our team has seen. I am not looking at other jobs right now, I want to build on the success of this team and go further. I'm already thinking about next cycle. I believe this team is made of legends and I want to be there to support them in being legends. Thank you.

"Thank you."

Gaellivare - Talus Sector

SEAF soldiers marched along the emergency barricades, surveying the droves of dissidents being re-distributed across the galaxy. Gaellivare was a proud planet, its primordial jungles liberated by the Helldivers a year ago to establish the foundations of the monumental Democracy Space Station. Despite it all, Super Earth's infallible, unquestionable algorithms had made the truth apparent- the planet was reeking with treachery. And though the idea that so many patriots had been turned against Managed Democracy was unthinkable, even more unthinkable was challenging the assertions made by the machinery that perpetuated the very veridical ideology all of Super Earth was built upon.

The telltale signs were all there upon deeper analysis. Minimal eye contact with superiors, excessive eye contact with superiors- all undeniable signs of the crisis at hand. But while at first there had been a mere trickle to manage, now entire towns of dissidents needed to be evacuated to correctional facilities. And under such stresses, the confidence of malign, undemocratic influences was ripe to grow. Some dissidents attempted to sow further discord with defiant statements or futile accusations that the system was erroneous. Each soldier's AR-23 Liberator assault would provide a comforting whisper of truth in the form of 5.5x50mm. The perfect means to silence dissent.

But the crisis weighed on the war effort. Already stims were being rationed, ammunition redistributed, and smoke withheld to deal with the growing risk of riots. Already thousands had been executed for their refusal to cooperate with entirely justified and reasonable lifelong penal labour sentences. And in the midst of all of this, the Super Earth Senators began their first match of the Cup of Harmony...

Sarzonia

The match had been a slog of a stalemate. A return of Super Earth's worst fears from the World Cup 100- a continuation of their drawing streak. Staving off defeat was a worthy cause, but this level of neutrality in score could not be allowed to continue. Deadman had been the focal point of it all, Lagrange providing long-range support as usual. Cuff and Asma had both made a particularly valiant effort to hold back the opposition during their more aggressive moments, but Fisher had failed to hold back the onslaught at the last moment. Creeper had been the only Super Earther to score, in his usual last-minute salvation fashion.

"You did what you could," Creeper had assured Fisher in the aftermath. But it was a poor man's consolation. Fisher was a towering colossus among men. His fervour hadn't faded with the reclamation of his homeworld. He knew he could do so much more. And yet his joints ached. His overextended body pained him just to move. Without stims, it was dawning on him just how strained he was becoming. And there was little he could do about it but accept failure after failure on his part. Every enemy point was his fault. He refused to be the weak link of his team.

"That's not good enough," he muttered. "That's just not good enough." A deep sigh exited his lips. He hadn't expected this sporting campaign to last this long. He wanted to be on the frontlines. Or the backlines. Slaughtering bugs. Squids. Dissidents. Whatever. To feel like he was contributing something. He'd begun this effort as a lynchpin and was feeling more like a liability. Creeper on the other hand had risen from background reservist to a crucial asset.

"We're not out of this yet. Give your utmost for liberty and fate will turn." Creeper's words were not as assuring as they would have been a month ago. The Senators were a team united in the same way as veteran survivors were. They were unified, sure, but they were scarred. Not physically- mostly- but Helldivers were never trained for this level of endurance. They could all feel themselves falling apart the more they gave of themselves. The little stresses were adding up.

And the only relief on offer was the hope of unequivocal victory.
Fre liberam per democrasum
Yes, THAT Super Earth. This nation is not intended to be particularly original or deep. Do not take anything it does too seriously.

TWO PARENTS APART: PART IV
Stuck in Zwangzug

Ensuing their time in Keppel Arena while the Dēmos regional football team plays, Whyatou, Wyetti and Valentinos seemingly look upon from the stands.

The late afternoon in that Dhemixian game was beautifully overcast. The Sun shone on the pitch as surrounding clouds gathered themselves erratically over the skyline.

Wyetti is still hazily alongside his teammates, lazying his body, overcast, gently swaying.

Mike Hattenborough: Dhemixia scored the equaliser! Dēmos are losing their edge!

For Wyetti, as a goalkeeper more so, pertinent to any team structure, to be found missing was not just a disgrace—it was an obscenity.

Wy: Whyatou?

Wh: What?

Wy: Do you think it’s fair to pin your blames on everything in life upon your parents?

Wh: What? No! That’s absurd.

Wy: Ugh!

A migraine torsoed its way through his veins, sound immediately becoming static.

Opening his eyes, he saw wax on his fingers.

Wy: Fuck…

He immediately collapsed.

Wh: Wyetti! Wyetti! WYETTI!

The screen was blank once more.

A television appeared out of the nothingness to resume and this time finish the conversation it started.

*The Supreme Deity and an unknown male appears, presumably young*

Supreme Deity: So as I was saying.

Notions like feminist philosophy are merely a delusion. It is a poor player not because its constituents are not fortuitous in themselves. No, we can learn a great amount from feminist philosophy. That a woman, as Simone de Beauvoir would put it, don’t become so at birth but assimilate into its notions is quite wise. But the problem is the conclusions such a system reaches. These conclusions are at best, traced back to the deeds of humanity and their divisions based off of the two genders.

Remember the analogy I gave you last time?

The boy nods slowly.

SD: Right. So what if we introduce a new species, those who can act both as man and woman. We have lots of hermaphrodites in the animal kingdom. Snails, earthworms, slugs…

I’m sure it would shock Simone that these creatures of themselves will form their own philosophy: Hermaphroditism. Shocking to Beauvoir but that is the only sensible conclusion arriveable. And so we come at the most probable conclusion of other notions.

The boy put up his hand.

SD: Yes?

Unknown boy: Masculinity and their philosophy?

SD: Exactly. But let me expand your brain a bit.

What if a carpenter or a lumberjack tilled his way through a couple of trees. He would, without knowing it, form his own philosophy on the art of tilling: Logging Philosophy and Customs. But why do we shun my example and not feminist philosophy?

The boy shakes his head, confused.

SD: It’s because of pain, a woman’s tears are so powerful that judgment to their own cohort is something male nor females themselves can cure.

SD: But if we were to realize that divisions made by man did not matter and that feeding into them makes us more disjunctive,

Maybe you wouldn’t blame your dad for your misfortune Wyetti?

Wy: Hah!

Wyetti, immediately waking up from his nightmare, a haunting nightmare not reserved for the ears of his teammates, coughed some blood before rushing to the staircase, hoping to escape this god-awful place, this god-awful profession, this god-awful existence.

Wh and Val: Hey! Wait up!

The two followed and chased him, ready to confront whatever was to be found in himself.

Image

Otherwise, if he does not learn, they were going nowhere. Trapped in an illusory curtain of make-believe and hexa-hedral memories shaped like an inescapable memory.

Wyetti immediately stopped himself at the third floor.

A black, morphed figure stood in front of him. It was the height of the boy he saw on the television set. The same construction that horrified him. The boy held a little candle in his hand.

The candle went out.

PART TWELVE: AIN'T NO SUNSHINE

The inner workings of the Jandan were...confusing, to say the least. There was certainly some sort of ground underfoot – Rami and Jeremy could feel their feet making contact with it – but that ground wasn't exactly visible. Instead, the whole space around them seemed to consist of snapshot images and things that were...well, they were certainly moving, but in such a way that they appeared to be projections. In amongst all of this, the threads of the narrative itself wove their way up, down, and around the surrounding space, translucent light rhythmically pulsating through them.

“This is certainly...a place,” Rami mused, “it's like...hmm, how do I put this?” He thought for a moment. “It's like what I'd picture the inside of the internet looks like.”

“The inside...of the internet.” Jeremy repeated the phrase whilst looking at Rami as if he'd grown an extra head. “What in the complete and actual fuck are you blabbering on about?”

“You've never thought about it?” Rami replied. “Like...all that information whizzing around the multiverse at the speed of light. How does it travel? What might that commute look like?”

Jeremy blinked slowly as he attempted to take in that last statement, before cracking into a thin smile. “Yeah, that settles it,” he said as his expression widened into a full-blown grin, “you've finally gone completely bonkers. Are you sure you didn't whack your head on something on the way in?”

“I'm quite sure, thanks.” Rami said icily, but gingerly checked his head for lumps and bumps anyway.

The pair continued onwards, deeper into the thicket of pulsating threads. As they did so, those threads became thicker and more numerous, the lights becoming brighter and more colourful. Rami and Jeremy both had to move the odd thread aside to clear the way – and each time they did so, the thread that they touched would briefly light the null space with more images and sounds, snapshots of history as told or acted. Occasionally, one or the other would hear their own voices emanating from a thread. After some time and distance walking – exactly how long was unknowable due to the lack of any way of measuring either in this strange environment – Rami and Jeremy came to what appeared to be a dead end. The threads here were even thicker, knotting over and under each other to form a high wall that blocked the way.

”...you are my sunshine...”

“Great job, genius,” Jeremy said coldly as he looked for a gap in the knotted threads, “now what do we do?”

”...my only sunshine...”

“I'm not sure,” Rami replied as he looked over the same threads. “Doesn't look like an end we can pull...”

”...you make me happy...”

Jeremy grabbed a thread and tugged at it hard. It steadfastly refused to budge. “...nope, that didn't work.”

”...when skies are grey...”

Jeremy let go of the thread, a quizzical look on his face. “Wait...wait...do you hear thar?”

”...you'll never know, dear...”

“Yeah...” Rami said quietly, “...sounds like somebody's singing. Doesn't sound like the thread echoes though...”

”...how much I love you...”

“Hang on a minute,” Jeremy said with a look of realisation, “I recognise that song!”

”...so please don't take...”

“I've sung that song,” Rami mused, “many years ago...as a lullaby...”

”...my sunshine away...”

The knotted threads began to unravel themselves, snaking apart and beginning to clear the way. As they did so, it became clear that Rami and Jeremy were no longer alone. A blond woman, who looked to be in her late twenties – she always looked to be in her late twenties – stood a few hundred metres away, in fashionable leggings and heels, a figure-hugging sweater covering her top half, and a confused smile on her face. Her eyes lit up as she noticed the two older men approach, and greeted them warmly.

“Grampa!” the woman said brightly to Rami, before turning to Jeremy. “And Drunk Grampa!”

Division 1 Enters 10th Season — A Reflection Pt. 1
Dantopia's Top-Flight League History Analysed Intently By Our Chief Football Correspondent
By SAUL ARNSTEIN
SHARAG, ZWANGZUG — As the anticipated match between Dantopia and Calgasia awaits, so too does the start of Dantopia's 10th season of the Dantopian Football Association's (DFA) Division 1. As someone who has been very fortunate to have been covering Dantopian football for a number of years, I have taken the opportunity to reflect back on the history of our domestic game.

A Reflection Pt. 2 — A Reflection Pt. 3

Upon the DFA's inception, they sought to promote the beautiful game, not just in Dantopia, but also project it globally. They created the two professional divisions of football we know today — Divisions 1 and 2 — as a two-tiered, closed league system. Originally both leagues were only contested by ten clubs each, but expansion in season V saw this increased to twelve clubs each and the leagues reorganised under a new twenty-four team model. Divisions 1 and 2 have always operated on a system of promotion and relegation with each other. However, the addition of the first and second phases was the new introduction from Season V onwards. Previously, the clubs had played each other four times for a total of thirty-six matches. This changed, following the expansion and introduction of the phases, so that teams play each other just three times in the first phase — bringing the total to thirty-three matches, and then the leagues are split to a top six and bottom six, and teams then play each other in those subsections just once more — leading to a grand total of thirty-eight matches.

The DFA Cup has always stood alongside the league formats, and provided Dantopian clubs with a domestic competition to fight for as well. This is open to all twenty-four teams in the closed-league system, and starts with a preliminary round, where the top six sides from Division 1 get an automatic bye based on their league position, and a further two sides from the bottom six of Division 1 are randomly drawn either into the preliminary round (four teams) or get a bye (two teams) — unless either of the prior winners or runners-up finished outside the top six in Division 1, in which case they automatically get a bye into the Round of 16, and the randomly assigned bye places are rescinded.

This system still stands as such today, though there have been murmurings of increasing the amount of promoted and relegated sides between the two divisions — this currently stands at just one team. One of the more popular proposals is to add a second relegation spot from Division 1, and add a playoff round between positions two-five in Division 2 at the end of the second phase, with the sixth placed side missing out on the playoffs altogether. It remains to be seen whether this is implemented in a future season, but talks are ongoing within the DFA, along with a number of other proposals.

I have been tasked with providing a brief overview of each successive season of the DFA's Division 1, so without further ado, may I present my reflections, starting, of course, from the inaugural season.

Season Summary:
The inaugural season of the Dantopian Football Association's (DFA) Division 1 saw Lion City FC come out victorious — on goal difference — over Dartford City. To further add insult to injury, Lion City FC narrowly defeated the Clippers 1-0 in the first edition of the DFA Cup final too. Striker Barry Paine led the way in terms of scoring in the league, and also secured the Player of the Season award as well. Brent-Bartholomew Barnham came away with the most assists. Adebayo Adeyemi was the standout young player of the season, and Harold Northgate won the manager of the season award. Northgate would then quickly be poached for the Dantopian national team in time for their first venture into international football in the South Pacific Cup, a tournament the Lions would go on to win. The Venice Villains were relegated to Division 2, to be replaced by the Rockport Rovers for the following season.

Season Summary:
The second season of the DFA's Division 1 took place following the Dantopian national team's World Cup 94 qualifying round exit. Dantopia's first official foray on the World Cup qualifying stage was met with intrigue and anticipation of the nation's domestic league. As a result, many foreign players and managers joined the league this season, albeit most only on one-year deals. The winner of Division 1 was the Grenadiers — who secured their first title under the brief stewardship of Danny Haverhead — who also won manager of the season. The DFA Cup final was a closely contested affair between the two Dartford teams — with Dartford City coming out on top, by form of penalty shoot-out. Dartford Oilers forward Michael Danchevy topped the scoring charts with 24, but player of the season went to his international team compatriot, Adebayo Adeyemi — for the Grenadiers. Fellow Grenadiers Charles Terzaghi secured the most assists, and the young player of the season went to the Portland Pirates, and Evinea's own, Raphael Kwaku — one of few internationals who signed on for the long haul. East Bay United were relegated to Division 2, to be replaced by their local rivals, the Waiakea Warriors, for the following season.

Season Summary:
The third season of the DFA's Division 1 saw the swift exodus of a number of international players and managers, following the expiry of their one-year contracts the prior season. Only a few international players stayed in the Division, most notably from the nations of Corinthina and Macronesia, both with close cultural ties to Dantopia. A new D1 winner was crowned — the Dartford Oilers coming out on top — on goal difference over Apollo FC, behind an impressive breakthrough campaign from their young Corinthinian striker Oskar Olsen — who also parted with the top goalscorer, player of the season and young player of the season awards. Cliff Clamber provided the most assists, and manager Derek ten Hogg won the manager of the year award, rounding off a clean sweep of the awards for the Oilers. The DFA Cup final saw a huge upset — the Chester Chiefs romping to victory against Lion City FC, following an early red card for the Royals — they capitulated soon after, and this summed up an awful season for them, as they had also dropped to sixth in the league table too. Pacific FC, who had been circling the drain near the bottom of the league for a few seasons, were finally relegated, to be replaced by East Bay United — who made a swift return to the top flight following their relegation the season prior.

The Hares defeat Hapilopper 2-1 in their first Cup of Harmony game

It was indeed a joyous surprise for the Woodsmereans, when hearing that they had won 2-1 against one of the higher ranking teams in the tournament. We could point that to our experience with 4-4-2 formations, as well as the recent deterioration of Hapilopper's government. Nonetheless, the match proved that our solid gameplay is in fact a threat.

The game started with Pinto gaining possession of the ball and, with the drunk Zack Gardener, attempting to penetrate our wide midfield. At the 6th minute, Gardener managed to flank Uska, but after being surrounded by 5 Hares, he began to panick. It seemed like he had downed 2 pints prior to the match since he just tripped over the ball and began shaking vigorously. The ball was moving towards his fellow forward, Pinto but Seg Pa just intercepted the ball and dashed forward with Groibyz and Markuz. They made some substantial advancement thanks to gaps at the edges of the Hapilopper midfield. Markuz received the long ball Groibyz and shot about 15 metres to the right of the goal, and missed terribly.

In Woodsmere, it is said that second time is the charm, so the three went for it again after intercepting a pass by Chaney. They wove through the midfield and since the person in possession of the ball always had two options, everyone was competing over who to mark. This distraction allowed for yet another try at scoring, this time Groibyz launched the ball into the top-right corner of the goal. This significantly boosted morale for the team and the fans, and the midfielders became more active to help the forwards more. After the goal, the Hapiloppers who were disappointed by their goalkeeper, Lou Hyde, who couldn't save the ball and went rogue to reclaim their superiority. This was largely evident when the enraged Arnold March slide tackled Markuz with great force, when Markuz attempted to score for a third try. March was given a yellow card. Another yellow card was given at the 42nd minute, to Zack Gardener for swearing at the referee every time Woodsmere got the ball.

After half time, Woodsmere tried a 4th time at a quick dash and a score. Hapilopper had come up with a plan for the midfielders to move laterally in a coordinated manner, but it was not yet happening. The Hares took advantage of the irregular arrangement of the opposition to push forward. Groibyz tapped the ball into the edge of the goal: Hyde dived but still not enough to save the ball. The fans cheered again and sung the national anthem after. Unfortunately, when the Hapilopper midfield began to move in a coordinated manner, the Hares were unable to advance as well as before and were held off. This allowed Hapilopper to gain possession of the ball and change how the game played out. When Pinto intercepted the ball in the 88th minute, it was easy for him to advance since the only players in his way were the 4 spread out defenders: the midfielders were all up the pitch trying to attack. With the help of Jamie Hause, he easily scored a goal although it felt less dramatic due to the smaller Hapilopper audience. The game concluded with Taneks Suhem being given a yellow card for a brutal tackle on a Hapilopperian player.

Despite the unfortunate conclusion, the Woodsmereans left the stadium in a happy mood. Reged said to our correspondent, "I am thoroughly impressed by the team. To win our first match in the Cup of Harmony against a great team is such an achievement, it is right for our fans to be celebrating the result."

SERNET REIGNS VICTORIOUS AGAINST TJUN-IA; 1-0 VICTORY IN BASSABOOK
the match
Sernesports TV
reporter: Salman Ferisen

The Steamers have done it again.
Another night, another upset, another step in this remarkable rise of Sernetian football internationally. Proof that Sernet is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Under the pale white lights of Bassabook's Pacific Field, a place that seemed to hum with tension right up until kickoff, Sernet delivered a performance of discipline and nerve to defeat TJUN-ia by a single goal, earning one of the most significant victories in their modern history. For a team that arrived at the Cup of Harmony following elimination from the World Cup at the playoffs, unsure of how quickly they could recover from the playoff heartbreak, this was the perfect response: structured, committed, and carried by a belief that seems to grow with every international match they play. There was also a reassuringly large fanbase at Bassabook to support the Steamers, as usual. No matter where they venture, at least a couple thousand will come.

Sernet opened cautiously, clearly aware of TJUN-ia's quality on the ball. For long stretches the match unfolded as expected: TJUN-ia probing, passing, testing the wings and Sernet standing firm, absorbing pressure, picking their moments.

Every clearance from Zoliba, every recovery run from Mantrostem, every tackle from Tworpowski seemed designed to settle the match down. And at the back, Pasarowski delivered the kind of half that defines tournaments. His fingertip stop in the 16th minute drew gasps even from the neutral stands; his reflex block in the 25th felt borderline impossible.

Not beautiful football, but smart football. Football that kept the door open.

While TJUN-ia seemed to control the first half, that was due to change. Around the hour mark, the match changed tone completely. Komstrowski began to find pockets of space. Stork tightened the midfield shape. Jatrowski pushed higher. Suddenly TJUN-ia's dominance faded away, and for the first time Sernet looked like the side dictating rhythm.

The goal, when it came, felt like the inevitable result of that growing confidence.

67' Bolsting, the Eternal Captain

Oluwawa broke down the right, carrying the ball with his familiar electric stride. He lifted a cross that hung in the air just long enough for Sporius Bolsting to rise, twist his neck, and guide a perfect header low into the far corner.

The captain wheeled away, fists clenched, mouth open in a roar toward the Sernetian end, topped off by a celebratory dance.
A moment of pure, unfiltered pride.

There are goals that win matches.
There are goals that define campaigns.
This felt like the latter.

The stands exploded in a storm of noise. Fans singing, horns blaring, flares being lit, flags frantically being waved. Soon enough, the stands were enveloped in clouds of blue and orange.

TJUN-ia responded with urgency, throwing men forward, firing crosses into the box, searching desperately for an answer. But if the goal was Bolsting's, the final 20 minutes belonged to the defence.
Stork blocked everything.
Mantrostem played like he'd been a centre-back his whole life.
Zoliba commanded the shape as if he was born for nights like this.
And Pasarowski held every loose ball with ice-cold calm.
The steamers persevered, countering every attack the TJUN-ians could muster.

When the final whistle sounded, there was an eruption of song and a wave, rolling and rolling through the Sernetian supporters, loud and disbelieving and joyous.

This was more than a win.
This was reassurance that the journey didn't end with the playoff loss.
The Steamers are still here.
Still dangerous.

The Martian Independent Republic awaits on Matchday 2, a different challenge, but not one Sernet will fear after this performance. Pond's men showed the essential quality that has carried them this far:
They refuse to be overwhelmed.

And tonight, in Bassabook, that refusal became a victory that Sernet fans will remember for a very long time.

Final score:
Sernet 1-0 TJUN-ia

Inside the Sernet Locker room

The corridor beneath Bassabook's Pacific Field hums with the songs of distant crowds, but inside the Sernet locker room? It's a world of its own. The Steamers' world. The smell of sweat, spray, and victory mixes with the metallic tang of the industrial-blue lockers. The mood is bright, buzzing and relieved.

Pasarowski:

(tugging off his gloves, grinning)
"Another clean sheet. That makes the rest of the matches more light-hearted. Can't lie, that last save - my fingertips knew national duty."

Bolsting:

(spinning his armband on one finger)
"We said we'd show the Cup of Harmony what sernetian football looks like. And today? We kept our word. But we haven't done anything yet. Respect everyone, but fear nobody. We're ready to mince up them Martian Independent Republic guys."

Oluwawa:

(stretching his calves, laughing)
"Fear? Ha! I nearly scored that bicycle kick in the 70th minute. Imagine that went in, the whole stadium would've gone mad! Next match though, next one's mine. Allow it Sporius please."

Stork:

(wrapping ice on his knee)
"The midfield structure held nicely. That's what wins games. Everyone kept their discipline, and that's why we looked like a proper machine out there. Good work, all of you. Now we need to oil up for the next one. Loss is not an option boys."

Komstrowski:

(pulling on a fresh shirt)
"Textbook Sernet match. Fast transitions, solid presses, and we frustrated them every time they tried to run channels. But we need sharper finishing. One goal won't be enough every match. Score so many that people have trouble keeping track of the scoreline."

Jatrowski:

(sitting with a towel over his head)
"My passing map must look like a spider web. But it worked. Yuezhou, Free Republics; none of them gave me this kind of midfield chaos. TJUN-ia pressed like madmen."

Mantrostem:

(checking the studs on his boots)
"Did you lot see when I ran their winger off the pitch? My man didn't know what hit him. Defence did its job. One little slip and they'd have punished us, but we held."

Zoliba:

(massaging his shoulder)
"Old bones, new tricks. I swear I'm aging backwards with you youngsters. That block in the 83rd minute? Felt like I was 20 again."

Tworpowski:

(leaning back, headphones around his neck)
"The crowd from Bassabook was louder than half the ultras back home. Every time we won a duel, the noise went bang. That stadium carried us."

Esingfort:

(drinking water)
"Not gonna lie that was a fire performance. All of us deserve a great big pat on the back, even the guys who didn't play today."

Bolsting pulls everyone into a huddle; boots half off, tape hanging loose, gloves on the floor.

Bolsting:

"Boys... This... this is how we start the Cup of Harmony. Not scared, not apologising for being here. We're not guests. We belong."

Everyone cheers, claps, taps the lockers, stomps the floor.

Dottman:

"We are the champions."

Pasarowski

"Sernet on three!"

"ONE! TWO! THREE! SERNET IS HIM, SERNET IS HIM, ALL WHO OPPOSE HIM BELONG IN THE BIN!"

The roar echoes down the hall.

As staff begin collecting jerseys and ice packs, and as players grab protein bars and water bottles, one thing is clear: The Sernet locker room is no longer just a room. It's a furnace, and the Steamers are heating up.

Pre-match Analysis: vs the Martian Independent Republic @Pacific Field, Bassabook
by Czesław Jalińowski

Image
We are using our original starting 11 for the next two games. We are planning multiple substitutions throughout the course of the game. Everyone will have the chance to do something meaningful on the pitch for Sernet.

Group 4 table:
* Group 4                          Pld   W  D  L  Pts
1 Sernet 1 1 0 0 3
2 Bhumi Matawis Empire 1 0 1 0 1
The Martian Independent Republic 1 0 1 0 1
4 TJUN-ia 1 0 0 1 0

Bonusia is excluded as they have not yet played a match.

Analysis:
Following our decisive victory against TJUN-ia, we land ourselves at the top of the table, snatching 3 valuable points. Funnily enough we are the only team to have scored a goal so far in Group 4, as the other match, Bhumi Matawis Empire vs The Martian Independent republic, resulted in a goalless draw. Unfortunately for TJUN-ia, this means they are alone at the bottom of the table, while Bonusia also has 0 points, but they are yet to play a match.
Next up on our list, we're facing the Martian Independent Republic. The Spiders, as they are known, bring with them a decently-sized team and a good-looking rust-orange kit. We are playing them at the Pacific Field in Bassabook once again. At joint second place, they hold one point following their draw to Bhumi Matawis Empire which was played in the other Group 4 stadium, the Doymals stadium in Craton. As for the game itself, we're pretty sure the steamers can maintain the lead by bagging another 3 points, resulting in us being in possession of a healthy 6 points, the maximum amount possible.
Here are our predictions:
Sernet 3-1 The Martian Independent Republic

Group Draw is Here. Who's Our Opponents?
By Diandra Faradina

Craton, Zwangzug (4 Sep) - 2026 would not be an empty year for The White Tiger. Despite failing to qualify to the World Cup, the association was getting to the invitational competition known as Cup of Harmony. The competition is quite important in the World Cup cycle as it is sometimes known as the lower tier World Cup. But as it is an invitational, the numbers are restricted. Luckily, the association responded quickly and the team is ready to compete.

In the competition, Bhumi Matawis is drawn into Group 4. Within the group are TJUN-ia, Bonusia, The Martian Independent Republic and Sernet. Ranked wise, TJUN-ia and Bonusia are the most favorited to advance further as both are the highest ranked team in the group. But seeing all of these teams performance in World Cup qualifying Round, the White Tiger have to keep an eye on TJUN-ia and Sernet as both teams success to advance into the playoff despite losing it. And that achievement is a great thing for them to be cautious too. However, the other two teams are not an easy opponents too. In fact, based on World Cup qualifying round results, Bhumi Matawis had the lowest position between all the teams within the group.

Interviewed as the team arrived at Zwangzug, the head coach said that it would be a tough journey for the team but he set the goal to reached third place in the group which would open their opportunity to qualify further. "We don't want to look too optimistic, so I think third place is quite realistic for our current team," the coach, Prasetyo Projo Winangun said.

The team will be playing in Zwangzug in either Pacific Field at Bassabook or Doymals Stadium at Craton. The first match will be played at 7 September 2026 at Doymals Stadium where the White Tiger will meet The Martian Independent Republic.

Share Points in the Goalless First Match
By Farhat Arasya

Craton, Zwangzug (7 Sep) - Monday is here and the first Cup of Harmony match was held earlier today. In this first match, Bhumi Matawis Empire was facing The Martian Independent Republic at Doymals Stadium, Craton. And with the huge enthusiasm, the tickets provided by the host for Bhumian supporters were almost sold out.

The match started with a tight and intense atmosphere. The White Tiger were mostly defensive and rely on counter attacks to surprise their opponents. But it seems that The Spiders was always ready. On the other hand, several attacks from the Spiders were able to break by the defense. In the first half of the match, most of the ball was running around in the middle of the field. At the of the first half, the score was still 0-0. Statistically, the Spiders was controlling the match with 63% possession. They also had 7 goals attempts, 3 of them were critical. Luckily, all of them failed to score any goal either because of our great goalkeeper or because of their player failed execution.

In the second half, the White Tiger change its tactics. Still defensive but getting more offensive at the right time. Counter attacks still become their main weapon to attacks. But they also initiate attacks independently ones in a while. The opponent still in high energy and push forward to attacks anytime they got the chance. The intensity rising as the time tickling faster into the 90 minute. And until the whistle was blown by the referee, the 0-0 score was not change. The White Tiger was able to balance the ball possession in the second half although the Spiders still in lead with 52% possession. They also increase their goals opportunity despite non were become a goal. The same thing happened to their opponent.

Interviewed after the match, Prasetyo Projo Winangun said that he was a little disappoint with the performance but accepted the draw result. "I still believe our players can do better than today's match in the future. But a draw is better than a loss," he said. While the critics were relieve that they can push a draw as the match was quite tight and in several occasion, the Spiders was able to break the defense and only face to face with the goalkeeper. They congratulate Putu Sumadiyasa, the goalkeeper, for his great safe throughout the match.

Next is a bye day for the White Tiger. But in the third match day, they will face Sernet, one of the two teams within the group that passed into the playoff in World Cup. They currently lead the group after a 1-0 win against TJUN-ia.

Post-Game Show

Bahav: Welcome to The VARroom! Zaggy Nocklov just sealed a 1 - 0 win against Snestar, with Zoya Karamzin scoring the singular goal. I think that this is the start of a great run for Soviet Kem in the Cup of Harmony!

Stev: Well, the statistics are technically in our favor as of now, with Nocklov now having a 100%-win rate. But! He has only managed one game. So, it looks like Bahav may have been correct, we may have a statistic-defying run!

Yasmin: Well, with The Echo Grid and change in management may have drastically changed how the team plays, and the character of the team. The win against Snestar was a 50/50 win, loose; there was no real way for a draw. Both teams looked amazing, we may have just gotten lucky, we may have also been the better team, I would like to congratulate both teams on their performance.

Bahav: How about we make a bet Yasmin, if we just got "lucky," then we should be able to finish top two in the group. If we don't, you can blow-up my house.

Yasmin: Okay, I'll take you up on that bet, anyone else want to join in?

Stev: I'll join you in the Yasmin.

Laila: I'll stay out of this, I'm not the destructive type. Now, back to the actual game, Zoya Karamzin scored a magnificent goal in the 59th minute, emerging out of the blind spots. Her finish was clinical, off a lob ball from Ilya Sidorski, settling the ball easily, then smashing it past Federico Calvaresi! I think that this starting eleven will see consistent results. I, unlike Bahav, attribute the success to The Echo Grid, due to the intense training that these athletes have gone through in it.

Bahav: But you are not seeing that the tactics of Zaggy Nocklov are far superior to those of Ken Stavisk, so I say that the tactics are playing a larger role!

Stev: Statistically it should be both...

Bahav: Be quiet Stev!

Yasmin: How about we just end it there, thank you all for watching, but I think that we should end before this gets out of hand, good night!

Pre-match Show

Bahav: Welcome to The VARroom's Pre-match Show! The starting line-up has not changed for Soviet Kem, and coming off of an excelent 1 - 0 win over Snestar, the players must be ready to face the most "statistically" challenging team yet, 48 ranked Saterun!

Stev: Well according to the statistics, we are in for a challenge, they have an impressive footballing history, and they are coming off of a bye. So, this may be a good game.

Yasmin: I know I shouldn't go against our team, but I also really want to blow-up Bahav's house, but I do agree with Stev, this is going to be a challenging match. As of now we are tied for first in our group, with a win we may be able to pull ahead, but a loss may drag us down to third or fourth. This is a crucial game in our qualifying campaign.

Bahav: With the tactics of Zaggy Nocklov, we should have the slight advantage, I watched some of Sterun's older games, both teams seem to play very similar attacking style football. At least in the balance of attacking and defending that happens, so this may be a rather close game, and it may end in a draw.

Laila: Well, it looks as though there is a clear agreement, this is odd, but I do agree, we are in for a challenge. Even our captain, Arkan Zekenin agrees, as I had interviewed him in the player spotlight!

Laila: Welcome Arkan, thank you for agreeing for an interview!

Zenkenin: Of course, I saw what a great job you did interviewing Zoya, so I had to agree!

Laila: So as with Zoya, let's start at the beginning, you grew up just outside of Baytrograd, a huge, sprawling city, that is not really known for football. My question to you is, what was growing up in such a large, non-sporting city like?

Zenkenin: Vary interesting question. Growing up, I always just enjoyed tackling people and playing chess. After school I would go out and play football, always being a defender in the yard games. But on days when it was either too hot or cold to play, I would play chess, either against other people or a computer, growing my own strategies and building my tactical mind. Now growing up in a suburban neighborhood, I always had to go far for most of my footballing endeavors, but eventually I got a letter to join The Echo Grid. The letter promised that I would either be the best defender possible, or I will be let go, and it was all free of charge, so my parents let me go, I was eighteen. I was just astonished that I was chosen to go, I always thought of myself as just an okay defender, not one of the best youth defenders in the nation!

Laila: So, like Zoya, The Echo Grid changed your life for the better. My question is, did you face any challenges with your liking to chess while at The Echo Grid?

Zenkenin: I actually did not, they encouraged us to play chess, to build our tactical minds, and how to block people. However, I am not really allowed to talk about my training at The Echo Grid, I probably have said more than I am supposed to. (laughs)

Laila: Interesting, so your mindset is one of control during matches, or does chess just help you tactically?

Zenkenin: My mindset during matches is to guide the team to a victory, I offer them advise while playing. I try to not be too controlling, but sometimes I have to be. While I'm not leading during a match, I am actually defending, and I don't actually know how to convey in words what goes through my head while I am defending, I just do it naturally, reading their moves and their next three.

Laila: That is a very advanced way of playing, my final question for you is what do you think of your next match against Saterun?

Zenkenin: Well, with it only being my second national team game, I am expecting chaos. It will be a close match; I will be holding every Soviet Kemrainan player to the highest standard, this is the real proof that our first win was not just a fluke, and that we are truly one of the best teams in the multiverse!

Laila: Well, thank you for your time, and best of luck against Saterun!

Yasmin: Well, I think we have to rap this up guys... Oh, we are back, stop bickering you fools!

Stev: With this starting eleven we should have a close match on our hands, it will be enthralling!

Bahav: Well, sadly it is time to end, join us after the match against Saterun for more The VARroom! And I have been Bahav Xakin, with Stev Burlam, Yasmin Lulu, and Laila Matxin, hope you all tune in after the game!
