[IT’S FLASHBACK TIME]

“You can’t do that! They need to play!”

Everett Steadman rose above the racket.

“Gentlemen. Gentlemen! We made a deal. And I have upheld my end. Jouko is here. I never mentioned him playing.”

Years of training in the Prosecor Agency had given him the capacity to utter those words in front of a whole dressing room that hated him without a single drop of sweat. But deep down buried inside him, there was a racing heart. Was that it, all that he had built up towards? Despite all the circumstances, that pesky ‘permitted’ goalkeeper and the limitations of the group, he had brought them to the final of the Cup of Harmony. It was bizarre that no one recognized how he was not just an excellent servant to the nation but also an exceptional manager. Was Pesonen a better goalkeeper than Powell? Possibly, but he could not fathom winning this tournament with a foreign worker between the posts. To exclude Puckett from the line-up, Steadman would have to admit himself, was more about personal vengeance than anything else. Still, Doucouré was an acceptable alternative, for sure. And now, those guys were acting up like schoolchildren rather than getting their head on the chance for a cup triumph. Luckily, McIntyre stepped up. He did not personally like the officer, but giving him the captain’s armband had been a good solution: now he no longer acted up.

“Guys, whatever your personal opinion… It’s the boss who makes the line-up, who calls the shots. That’s the way it is. He did his part, now we must do ours and go out and play a final.”

As McIntyre and Steadman left the dressing room, there was some murmuring but any opposition was left without a backbone.

“Alright Mac, don’t worry about it. They’ll fall in line soon. Now, what I want you to do is-”

Steadman never got any further. Swiftly, the sturdy midfielder shoved his superior into a closet, gagging him with what (after first taste tests) appeared to be a spare football sock. The manager was too stunned at first and when he finally unfroze, the door was closed. He tried to whack the door with his feet and to toss his full body against it, but it seemed as if the sound of his actions disappeared underneath the blanket of a roaring crowd in Alcassar. After fifteen minutes, Steadman gave up his efforts as they were in vain. That did not mean that he was not seething. In a way, it was lucky for the rebels that they did not unlock him in the first half or he would have skinned them alive. But as his temper started to disappear, Everett Steadman started to think. There was no way that they credibly could get away with it, right? I mean, you cannot leave your coach locked up forever. Moreover if that coach is a ranking officer in the Prosecor Agency - besides, why weren’t they looking for him? At halfway, some of his questions were answered as Izzy Powell and Toussaint Doucouré put their heads inside the closet.

“Hi coach, sorry about that but…”
“Hmmmmm! Hgmgmhmh! Hghghhg!”
“Yeah, we’re going to keep that sock in for a bit longer.”
“Hmmg!”
“So, here’s the thing. We’re doing well, Pershing got us an opening goal and Jouko is killing it.”

From the look in his eyes, they could see that just mentioning Pesonens name still sufficed to turn Steadman berserk. Izak Powell however calmly continued his resume.

“If we can keep that up, there is a good chance we win. And that would be great, for us of course, but also for you. Because you can, in that case, walk away from all that without losing face. We’ll let you out in time, you share the spoils of the triumph, we’ll fucking lift you on our shoulders if you want to. Everett Steadman, Cup of Harmony winning manager, how does that sound? A great high and a perfect one to stop. That’s the other part of the deal. We’ll let you keep your face to your superiors, to the nation and to the footballing world, if you walk away after this one. That is the only way out with you as a national and agency hero.”
“Hmmmghgh!”
“It sounds as if mister Steadman needs a bit more time to think about it.”

The metallic sound of the closing cupboard had given Steadman back his calmth. He tried to look to the problem from various directions but realized that any opposition to the group, let alone further absence from the match, would make his superiors question him. And would make them question where on earth he had been. So when the duo returned for the second time, based upon the crowd sounds approximately with a handful of minutes on the clock, he calmly allowed them to put out the sock.

“I’ll take it.”
“Ideal. We’re three-one up and Vielfaltig is falling apart.”

Everett Steadman appeared out of the tunnel just in time to see Jouko Pesonen make a perfect catch on a corner kick, launch Baylor Rivers up the left wing who managed to find Marcus Puckett. The attacking midfielder usually looked for a footballing solution but from just outside the box, he simply shot it in the furthest corner, out of reach for Marcela Ramos. And of course Steadman cheered for the 4-1, some of the reserves gave him hugs him in a way the cameras could not tell how cold those were. On the last whistle, the manager lifted one fist in the air, in triumph.

But in his head, the first seeds of vengeance were planted already.

[FLASHBACK TIME IS OVER, GET YOUR ASS IN THE CURRENT TIMELINE]

Today was a day Everett Steadman had put in his agenda a long time ago, with double underlines in bright red. What had started to brew inside his head in that closet in Alcassar was finally coming to fruition. Of course, he had not known the weak spot of his two mortal enemies yet back then. But now he had the first one right where he wanted him, right in front of his horns. To reach Jouko Pesonen had been a relatively easy task. In his family, Antti had always been the ugly duckling. Planting an inside man into the Merx sawmill had been a small job if you knew the owner. Officer Merthin always had been interested in the bottle but that ironically made him a perfect cast for the role of Seamus Wilson, annoying drunk and shift manager who could make the life of Antti Pesonen horrendous. Considering the previous notes in the file of Antti, the question was not if but when he would violently react. And Merthin had done a splendid task, at the peril of his own life.

The next step was to make sure that the strictest version of the law would be applied to the subject but for someone who knows the randomization script which directs integration cases to the different courts, it is easy to make a good match between defendant and judge. Judge Quinn would not let that rascal off the hook, he knew. If not, the little polaroids shared, of his escapades in a sleazy motel with a far younger woman, would have convinced him. The finishing touch Steadman appreciated the most was that he had gotten senator Finley to put his son on the case. Everett had known little Brook Finley since he was a child and knew that the obnoxious no-good could not talk his way out of a paper bag. The senator appreciated the gesture and if Antti would have had one escape route, it was now carefully sealed off. One unfortunate side effect was that Finley had been so incapable that he had gotten the case split: on the one hand the first court appearance, which had seen Antti expelled as expected. On the other hand, a second one that would see his parents and youngest sister follow the same path. It was not rare to see family members expelled along with the culprit if you made the case well about their ‘antisocial tendencies’ and ‘further risk to the society’. If there remained unclarity about the arguments, judge Meyers would take care of it. He might be a football fan, but he’s mainly on the payroll of the Prosecor Agency.

With a broad grin and a light thread, Steadman stepped into River Street in Bridgehead. One to the left and there you had the court building, a strange mash-up as a modern block with pseudo-antique accents (such as the columns and the hideous frieze over the sliding doors) to give the whole place a bit more gravitas. He was not particularly fond of the place but for today, it could have been Steadman’s favorite spot. If expulsion for half your family did not make Pesonen a bitter man, then what would? If he would have been a singing man, he’ld chant now but in his current disguise with the fake moustache tickling his lips, he kept it to a cheery hum. His revenge on Marcus Puckett would be for a different day, but this was a splendid start. Steadman turned left and as his eyes made contact with the sliding doors, they also saw…

Goddamned.

What did they do here?

**

Izak Powell nervously fumbled with his bowtie. He did not like formal dress but his wife, a woman who rarely left the house in anything other than sweatpants and sneakers (ok, she is a gym teacher, but still), insisted that he would dress up for the occasion. With a grin, Marcus Puckett came over, a man with a head that was carved out of marble by the gods just to put it on top of a tuxedo.

“You’re really messing it up again, here, let me do it.”
“Sorry, Marcus, I never wear those. You’ve done this before?” Izzy grinned.
“Obviously, Izzy,” and with flair, Marcus rearranged Powell back into a well-dressed man.
“Should they not have been here already?”
“We’re five minutes before, Izak, that is at least four minutes earlier than most would usually be.”
“The press did turn up, at least. Where do they come from?”

Now it was Marcus’ turn to sport a wide grin.

“Let’s say that some papers were very keen to send a photographer and an intern if that gives them an exclusive interview with the always seclusive star of the national team.”
“Oh, I didn’t know Philips was seclusive,” Powell joked.

It was strange to think, Powell realized, that not that long ago everyone in the selection hated Puckett. The star midfielder of the Hammers still had his particularities but ever since Jouko Pesonen had explained that the man had helped him, rather than working against him, many had made their peace with his thinly layered arrogance and narcissistic side.

“You’ve seen Jouko yet?”
“No, I’ll think he’ll come with his family. Let’s hope the boys are there in time.”

As if that had been their signal, about twenty young men strolled into the little plaza in front of the sliding doors of the Bridgehead court house. Twenty-four hours earlier, they had landed from travelling to the Batavia and the next match in the qualification marathon would follow soon. Everyone could have used this time to visit family or rest a little. The trip to Osiris had been a long but fruitful one. In the always tricky away game against the team in orange, they had struggled to gain dominance in the opening half. The absence of Marchand (yellow carded, again) and an injured Merrick had been costly in the organization and the Batavia made clever use of that. But Jouko had been his irresistible self. With him on goal, Anewkansas barely let anything in. Since making his surprise return after the ban, he even had kept the sheets clean. Especially in the home match against the SRS, that had been an enormous stunt and the previously ambivalent audience had quickly closed him in their arms again. As that stood, the FA did not dare to push hard on a prolongation of the ban, so Pesonen could back to save the day in minute 38 as he stopped a penalty. After the break, the legs of the home team tired and that’s what coach Augustus had been waiting for. Replacement Doucouré opened the score in minute 66, breaking the opposing spirit. The double-up (the first international goal for right-back Karl Hullbacher) had been a nice icing on the cake.

The twenty young men who had constructed that victory, putting Anewkansas slam in the middle of the exciting World Cup race of group twelve, all signed in present. Not a single one of them had missed the appointment. Most of them were sharply dressed, or at least as sharp as could be. Those associated with a military club, such as Major or Sevilla, turned up in uniform. The five members of the Officers Club, the team which represented the police forces, looked especially smart with their kepi cleanly polished. Even youngsters such as Ridgeway and Jaffrenou had made a point of wearing a clean shirt to top of their outfits for the occasion. They looked splendid as a whole and the photographers started to snap away.

When a minute later the Pesonens walked onto the plaza as well, it was visibly a more than pleasant surprise for them. Especially Jouko looked a little stunned, to see all his teammates turn up on a dreary morning into the rather cold and grey business section of the capital.

“You guys! You really shouldn’t have…”

Before he could get emotional, it was Harvey McIntyre who took the word, clearing his throat as he tried to add the right weight to his spotless uniform.

“I think I speak for us all, as we are gathered here on this morning with the first rays of the su-”
“Fucking get on with it, Harvy Hamster,” Pitt van Dam spoke. The hard midfielder from the small mining city of Coalton probably didn’t own a suit but you could tell that he had made an effort with his least spotted shirt. Van Dam was probably also the only person in the world with the right or the guts to call officer McIntyre ‘Harvy Hamster’.
“Yes, yes, well,” McIntyre tried to recollect his thoughts, “what I wanted to say is that we are all here to support you and your family. That we want, with our presence, underline their integration in and contribution to our society. And that we want to send a positive message of unity.”
“And that we’ll thrash the courtroom if they decide against,” van Dam added, luckily soft enough only the members of the selection caught it.

Jouko, encircled by the press, could not say a word. He wasn’t much of a talker anyway. But he simply smiled and nodded his thanks. The past few weeks had been a nightmare for him but for the first time, it seemed as if his hope was getting the final upper hand over his fear.

Brewery Stadium, New Hap City, HOT-DAMN
Immediately following Match 13 of World Cup 100 Qualifying: HOT-DAMN 3-0 Astograth

The referee from a far-away land took a stop about five feet away from Ernie Stevenson. It was five minutes into injury time, and Ernie had given the referees a little bit of static about that five minutes. But those five minutes had come to an end, the referee got his whistle, blew it, and called it a game. The beer leaguers had just scored yet another win, their 13th out of 13 matches, and they had just clinched, at the very least, a playoff spot. That playoff spot would guarantee them a chance to qualify in a last-chance hooligan qualifier if the team suffered an almighty collapse in the last three matches.

Time for a rescue mission?

As the crowd erupted with cheers at the end of the match, Ernie quietly pumped his fist, moved over to shake the hand of the Astograthian head coach, Balendin Sorrekieta, and then walked over towards the tunnel. It was there, he was intercepted by the Hapilopper Television Network’s sideline reporter, Donny Sprague, who wanted to know Ernie’s thoughts.

“Well, my thoughts are, the team did great, they got off to a great start, and we’ve won another match,” Ernie said curtly. “We’re taking this one match at a time, and that’s all there is to it.”

“Certainly, though, you’ve got to be thinking more and more about qualifying,” Sprague pressed. “With Zwangzug dropping points to Hanalia last week, your team now has an eight point lead. Certainly you’ve got to think that qualifying is more in hand.”

“I’m thinking we’re looking ahead to Vaishnavaria in two weeks and Zwangzug the week after,” Ernie shot back, not taking the bait. “We’ve got two tough opponents there, and that’s what we’re thinking about.”

“But certainly, qualifying for the…”

“Our mindset is the next match,” Ernie snapped, getting a little annoyed. “We’re facing down our next match. We take it one step at a time. If we think too far ahead, we’re gonna blow it. This isn’t won yet. Especially when we’ve got Zwangzug breathing down our throats.”

Ernie walked away, pissed off with the questioning. But the reality was, even if Ernie was going to try to shoo away that line of questioning, it wasn’t going to go away. Reporters in the post-match press conference peppered Ernie, goalscorers Cale Mallett (11th and 19th) and Tim Radomia (72nd) about the concept of qualifying. Ernie wanted to tell the reporters to fuck off. Instead, he let them know, in modestly and slightly different ways each time, that the team was focused on the next match and not viewing the group as won. The only time Ernie gave a remotely different answer was when someone (clothed) asked Ernie his thoughts on Jeruselem getting kicked out of the World Cup.

“I’m not even thinking about that, that’s completely irrelevant to what we’re doing,” Ernie said.

Cale and Tim, meanwhile, figured they’d have fun with the reporters. As the increasingly banal questions seemed to drone on forever, Cale and Tim started making up a fictitious answer to each one, and these answers were linking together. If we were understanding it correctly, it involved a guy stealing a go-kart from a fun park. The guy in the go-kart drove to his local bar, got hammered, then drove the go-kart into a supermarket, where he apparently tried to “free” the frozen chickens from the frozen foods aisle. We think.

As Cale and Tim jammed along, spinning this ridiculous story, Ernie looked over at his players.

“What in the HELL are you two idiots talking about?” Ernie asked.

“This guy freed thousands of frozen chicken breasts from the frozen foods aisle of his grocer’s freezer,” Tim said without missing a beat. “This man is a hero.”

For a second, Ernie wanted to shoot his leading midfielder. But then he realized something. He and Cale were following his orders to the letter. Ernie had told his players, that under no circumstances should any member of the team talk about possibly qualifying for a World Cup proper to anybody. Tim and Cale were doing exactly as their head coach had told them to do. There was no malicious compliance to this, not even a little bit. It wasn’t malicious because Tim and Cale agreed to it, and they figured they’d have fun with it.

“I mean, we’ve got the week off and then we’re focusing on beating Vaishnavaria next week,” Tim continued. “What do you want me to say, coach?”

Ernie could only smile. Tim and Cale had done nothing wrong. They had been asked to not talk about winning the group or qualifying for the proper. They were humoring themselves by not taking the reporters’ increasingly stupid and banal questions. And Ernie realized that, even in the most ridiculous and idiotic of manners, his players were on the same page as he was.

Rafflesias falter on MD 13 and 14
Riandera falls back to fourth on group table
by .. Kevin Widiyanto

Ezriquay and Bandar Suryana—And as the Riffs thought that the Raffs had it all, they didn't. The last two matches involving Riandera have been disasters, which pushed them to fourth on the group table.

The first match, and the more chaotic one, was an away game in Baker Park. Unfortunately for the Rafflesias, the pressure of succeeding and making it to playoffs got to them. The only Rianderan to score in that match was Zhang, who scored at 58'.

The second game was another 'mess', but not as bad as the first. Woolridge managed to get past a tightly packed Ethanian defence at 23', and scored. The Ethanians balanced the scores at 49', and then came as clear winners when Rushbrooke scored at 66'.

"I'm honestly not too sure about the Rafflesias now," team manager Krishna told RianStar, "but I know they're having a good time."

Riandera will go head-to-head with Orcuo on MD 15. They have lost to them before, but Krishna says the Rafflesias have improved from there. After Orcuo is Electrum, who are at the bottom of the table. The Rafflesias have played them before as the away team, and won.

3.3 Ghost of the Past

Santiago felt more at ease as he drove closer to his house. But he was very uneasy knowing that the car still existed. As he went through the different streets, he would close his eyes and take deep breaths. He had to calm down and not let his wife and kids know the distress he felt. Once he got to the driveway, he ducked down, acting as if he was picking up stuff. But he closed his eyes one more time. Breathed in and out. He felt calm and finally got out of his car, closed the door and got his keys to open up home.

He got in and went to the kitchen. He saw his wife was starting to serve the Sopa de Rabo as he went to give her a hug and kiss greeting her. Their kids, 12 and 9 respectively came in, gave him a hug and kiss. Even their pet Labrador Retriever came to greet him, as he gave him some rubs and scratches, along with a hug. He washed his hands and helped his wife set up the table and the bowls of soup. It was a delicious meal, eating well and talking with his family about each of their day, plans for the weekend and such. All while he felt lingering anxiety of what he learned and realized during that drive and race on the highway.

After eating dinner, he got into some more comfortable clothes and decided to go walk the dog. He wanted to go out and walk away the stress he felt. But then, he felt the need to make a call. Once out the door and walking the dog to the corner of the street, he popped out his phone and began scrolling through his contacts. He found the person he wanted to call.

"Hello?"
"A-Akio. It's me, Santiago."
"Santiago! It's good to hear from you again!"
"it's good to hear from you too man."
"How have you been? It's been a while since we last talked."
"I've been doing alright, working as always with the patients. And you?"
"Doing well with the shop as always. People come here constantly for supplies, and it's been going well recently."
"That's wonderful to hear. Listen, I'm calling you because I have something important to tell you,"
"Oh? What is it?"
"I-I- I saw Ken's car. The old Sannis Z on the Rafael Rodrigues Highway going Northbound."
"...What? H-How? Are you sure it was Ken's Z?"
"It had the same shade of blue and the unique bumpers. The rare ones that your brother asked for."
"...Jesus Christ... I thought that car was trashed..."
"Apparently not... Did you know if he had a will with regards to the car?"
"I-I- Don't know... I mean- Shit... Did you see who was driving it?"
"The driver was driving fast and wildly that I had to drive fast as well to catch up."
"You raced him?!?!"
"Well, the situation called for it... But anyways, I saw his face, looked to be young guy in his early 20s."
"Jesus... We have to find him and convince him to give up that car! It shouldn't exist anymore!"
"I know, I know... But we have to see if we spot him again. I don't know if he wants to give up that car."
"...My God. I- I- I just don't know what to say..."
"We'll work something out. If he was driving fast, I have a hunch that he may be involved in the street scene. It's worth a start to look at there."
"I guess we could..."
"We'll keep in touch. Try to see on your end if there's events near your area and I'll check around my area."
"Alright, I'll do that. Thank you for letting me know. But we need to stop him for his own good."
"I agree. We'll keep in touch."
"Likewise, take care."

Santiago hung up the call and put his phone in his pocket. He looked up at the clear sky, with the blue moon and the stars that some were visible enough to see with the light pollution. He felt terribly concerned with the revelation and knew that they had to find a way to convince that young guy to get rid of the car. After all, it was a cursed car, and it needed to be stopped before it would harm- or worse- this new driver.

He and his group of eight soldiers had strict security over everything that moved through the gate - making sure that all was on schedule. Currently, the countries took fifteen hour intervals on who would have primary usage of the gate to ensure that big objects could go through. Every fifteen minutes, there would be a fifteen second interval where the change in priority was acknowledged before the other side would take over. This way, the Portal Gate could be used without much interruption.

This shift was no exception. A huge supply of food and water had just arrived from Freedom's Altar, and a shipment of goods from Chromatika's industrial companies were waiting to be sent back to the other side. The technician in charge was reporting that all levels were green regarding the amount of magic that was being used to keep the gate open, and things looked like they were proceeding as usual... Until it wasn't.

"Captain, there is something you should see," commented Kevin Durand, the head technician in charge of looking at the energies coming from the Portal Gate.

Gwohain went over to where Kevin was stationed in front of a computer screen.

"What is it, Kev?" Kevin and Nilas were close - they had worked together for going on five years, and were on first-name basis.

"There's an unidentified energy source that is starting to build from within the Portal Gate," explained Durand, "It's not to the point where it is of any danger, but there is no denying that it's been growing for the last twelve hours. It's a flat rate - I can estimate that it will continue to grow for the next day or so before it reaches a concerning level."

"Any idea what the cause is, or what it wants to do?" inquired Nilas, a worried look on his brow.

"Not sure. It can't be natural phenomenon - most natural causes happen almost instantaneously and without warning. If whatever the cause is wanted to be unnoticed, they could've taken many, many more precautions to remain masked. No, it's as if whoever is behind this wants us to know that it is coming. Not sure if that's to help us feel more comfortable or if they're taunting us, but it is absolutely deliberate," Durand stated, "I personally think it's a message of some kind and that's why whoever is behind it hasn't weaponized it."

"Twelve hours, did you say?" Niles zeroed in, "Twelve hours and then what happens?"

"The energy that's growing will get to the point where it will affect the Portal Gate directly. If we don't find a way to communicate with the source or stop it, it will effectively take over the Portal Gate to whatever intent that it has. The upside of tying Planar Shift to a Portal Gate like this is that it takes considerably less magical power to keep it operational. The downside is that it's extremely easier to influence, or worse, take over. The Yesopalithans were aware of this, but considered time of the more important aspect to focus on," lamented Kevin.

Nilas thought for a half minute, Kevin giving his friend and superior the time necessary. Sometimes, Nilas did his best work in some silence before committing to an answer.

"Is there a way for you to communicate back through the same energy back to wherever it is coming from?" Nilas inquired cautiously.

"Remembering your wave harmonics class from your university days, huh?" Kevin quipped, thinking.

"That may be worth a try. We'll work on it - and we'll also keep an eye on the energy buildup. When it's getting more than halfway to the breaking point, we'll let you know," Kevin promised.

Kevin Durand went back to his work, trying to find a feedback loop to ask the originator of the energy wave what the intent was.

///

AMÉLIE

"Are you sure that they'll be able to tell that the wave is coming from a friendly source?" asked the being in the room.

"As long as it's a constant, low, non-threatening buildup, the people in charge will know that it's deliberate and not malicious," answered Amélie.

"We will only be able to sustain those of you that we've saved for two more of your days," explained the being in a lamented tone, "If we aren't able to send you home by then, we'll either need to translate you to another dimension/plane, or you'll perish."

"We won't perish. I trust in my people," Amélie countered.

The being looked at Amélie with a bit of... Sympathy? Pity? But didn't comment.

SCHATZKI ARDENT

FIRST FLIGHT: 1945
WINGSPAN, METERS: 13.2
NO. SEATS: 1
SPEED, KNOTS: 372
WEIGHT, TONNES: 9.3
NO. BUILT: 383
This turboprop pioneers actual name is the Schatzki-Avioibsia Joint Venture Ardent.
■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ✹ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

As mentioned previously, the Schatzki Austeres biggest drawback proved to be its less than desirable performance issues, notably with poor higher altitude performance and light armament. The Kanzlian Air Force lodged their complaints with the performance of the Austere to Schatzki and so Schatzki engineers began development of a successor as early as 1943.

It proved to be a daunting task however as Ontwerp 24 to Ontwerp 26 were all considered dead ends as Schatzki had difficulty developing the license-built Avioibsia engine. Due to legal issues Avioibsia weren't willing to cooperate with Schatzki on their engine development. Things only progressed when the Kanzlian government intervened. On January 1943, the Kanzlian Air Force and government put up a new specification to succeed both the Schatzki Austere and Avioibsia Thunderer. Both fighter planes was deemed reaching its obsolescence, even when the the Austere was in service for less than a year. With foreign companies scrambling to enter the Kanzlian market, both Avioibsia and Schatzki would eventually reach an agreement to establish a joint venture company to design their submission for the Air Force's new specification. The Schatzki-Avioibsia Joint Venture Agreement was established on the 3rd of March 1943 and development began immediately. Known internally as Ontwerp A, Avioibsia provided their expertise on the engine department and avionics whilst Schatzki dealt with the rest.

At this time Avioibsia was developing a monumental breakthrough in turbine technology and was insistent to have Ontwerp A use their new turboprop AG-1T engine. Schatzki was initially hesistant with integrating new engine technology. Rightly so as Schatzki and Avioibsia was competing with foreign manufacturers who had a headstart. But Avioibsia would not budge and they threatened to pull out of the joint venture if the AG-1T engine was not used, to which Schatzki could only comply. The AG-1T engine would unsurprisingly add much more time to the design process as proven by the fact that by December 1943, three foreign manufacturers had submitted their designs for initial evaluation to the Air Force. In May 1944, Ontwerp A, renamed to Ontwerp Ardent, was submitted.

After passing through the initial evaluation, bar a few adjustments and a last minute change in specifications, the design was funded for a prototype along with two other foreign designs. A prototype was built late, as Avioibsia redesigned their AG-1T turboprop engine. On the 8th of August 1945, the prototype was flown for the first time. In evaluation with other designs, the Kanzlian Air Force would pick out the Ardent due to its superior speed and power to weight ratio.

The Ardent proved to be a huge leap forwards in aviation technology with the use of the turboprop engine. An engine that helped Ardent become a workhorse in various airforces. Though its fighter capabilities wasn't the best, especially with jet fighters entering the fray, its body was easily convertible into strike aircrafts that could carry significant payload with respectable speeds. It's in this strike aircraft role that the Ardent would be mostly employed as. Production of the Ardent after 1949 would almost entirely be of the strike aircraft model. This strike aircraft model would be a huge commercial success for both companies as they built a total of 383 units to foreign operators such as Sisua and Vazantina. The Kanzlian Air Force retired the Ardents in 1958 as it was gradually replaced by the Avioibsia Huntress.

The Ardent is one of aviation historys most important technological leaps as it paved the way for the very first turboprop engines, but indirectly also set the stage for the next technological leap in aviation, that is the jet engine. Today the Aviation Museum identify 12 units preserved across former operating nations and we have the honour to house two of them which you can find on the north wing of our museum! As the Ardent proved to be a massive technological leap and served faithfully for years, we place the Ardent on Rank 6 for its historical significance!

A turboprop engine can best be described as the middle ground between a piston engine and a jet engine. To simplify things, a turboprop uses a propeller to generate thrust, much like a piston engine. However it also relies on compressing air, mixing it with fuel, and combusting it, much like a jet engine. In fact, both turboprops and jet engines are turbine engines. While a jet engine produces thrust directly from its exhaust gases, a turboprop primarily generates thrust by converting those gases into shaft power instead. And yes, turboprops do produce exhaust just significantly weaker than that of a jet engine. It’s fascinating stuff, though admittedly a bit hard to explain without a diagram.

“So what’s the advantage of sitting in the middle nowadays? Wouldn’t jet engines have completely replaced the turboprop?” you might ask. Well, turboprop engines are much more fuel-efficient for short to medium range flights and require less runway to take off. That’s why most medium and small regional airliners are powered by turboprops. However, jet engines are more efficient and perform far better at higher altitudes and unlike a turboprop, a jet engine isn’t limited to around 390 knots.

Perhaps the most egregious shortcoming of the turboprop, though, is the noise. It’s not really the engine’s fault per se, but rather the tips of its propeller blades. Because the propeller spins faster than the aircraft’s forward speed, the tip speed increases the farther you go from the center. It can spin so fast that it approaches or even breaks the sound barrier, creating miniature sonic booms. To make matters worse, consider a contra-rotating engine. That has two sets of propellers mounted one behind the other. The rear propeller has to fight the turbulent air produced by the front one which only magnifies the loud screech it makes. The most common reason behind burst eardrums here within museum grounds is "I didn't expect the Ardent to be that loud this far away." And even then, the Ardent doesn't use a contra-rotating engine. Seriously, please, don't underestimate the Ardent and wear ear protection whenever the Museum tells you to.

PART EIGHT: DEATH, TIME, AND OTHER MILD INCONVENIENCES

Rami looked on, concerned at Jeremy, who was now nigh-catatonic from the sight of witnessing his own future death. In Rami's hand, the rubber chicken squeaked furiously in the direction of the photo booth. Rami looked down at the rubber chicken, and muttered to himself.

“I'm not sure what this all means,” Rami mused, “but whatever the next step is, that photo booth has something to do with it.” He steeled himself in preparation for re-entering the booth. “Come on, Jezza.”

Jeremy didn't move. At all.

Rami furrowed his brow at his compatriots lack of...well, anything. “Jeremy?” he asked, to no response.

“JEREMY!” Rami's raised voice made no difference; Jeremy remained completely immobile.

“Oh, for the love of...” Rami shouted directly into Jeremy's ear. “HEY, DICKWEASEL!” Surprisingly, even the high-volume insult did nothing; Jeremy didn't even flinch. He just...stood there, with a glassy=eyed stare that insinuated that nobody was home right now. Rami sighed, and slapped Jeremy hard across the face.

That, at last, did the trick. Snapped abruptly back into reality, Jeremy responded to the slap by punching Rami hard in the stomach.

“That was a reflex.” Jeremy said with a beaming smile. “Honest.”

“Whatever,” Rami wheezed as he tried to catch his breath, “we have bigger issues. Come on.”

Rami grabbed Jeremy's arm to lead him to the booth, but Jeremy refused to budge. Rami pulled harder, eventually managing to start dragging Jeremy behind him.

“Wait, no, please...anywhere but there...” Jeremy pleaded, unable to set his feet to prevent Rami dragging him into the booth, “ohgodohcrapohshitohfuckfuckfuck....nononononono...”

As Rami dragged Jeremy into the booth with him, the Audioslavian let out a horrific scream in panic. Rami would shortly join him in that regard, as the black void enveloped the pair once again. This time, though, the darkness seemed to permeate their very being, both men feeling like every cell and sinew in their body was being stretched and torn as the strange energy in the void worked its mojo.

Outside, as this was happening, the photobooth itself faded and warped, before appearing to collapse in on itself, disappearing with a quiet 'pop'. Nobody seemed to notice.

Yono Mulyawanto
As the new Mahapatih Anom, Yono Mulyawanto has a different vision for the Empire. Under the Religious Movement the government was focusing on maintaining economic and security stability. Under Yono Mulyawanto the government focused on equality amongst the state especially in terms of development. Despite the high autonomy status that the state received at the beginning of the Fourth Empire, the development gap between the metropole and other states are clearly visible. During the Third Empire Era, everything was centralised and the development was centered on the metropolis. And even though the states had their autonomy back then, it was harder for them to develop their state as the money mostly went to the palace.

At the start of the Fourth Empire, this practice was gradually changing starting from education and healthcare where the state was given the full authority to manage it. Although, the central government still gives them the grand rules and regulations as their guidelines. Mulyawanto continues the works of Hamid Hamzah about universal healthcare. During his first term, Mulyawanto passed the bill of universal healthcare implementation within the Empire which was proposed during Hamid Hamzah last term. The bill was successful in drawing positive results from the citizens as the majority of them have to rely on their paycheck or savings if any medical condition happens. While private insurance is still quite expensive for the average citizen. Mulyawanto also engaged in developing public transportation throughout the Empire. The aim is to reduce oil use which will help the country’s crude oil import value as they have become a net-importer of oil from previously net-exporter. On the other hand, he tried to decrease the monopoly of Permigas as the sole oil and gas company in the Empire to increase investment in the area.

The opposition was voicing their skepticism over Mulyawanto’s policies. They stated that the citizens can’t eat concrete so road building or public transportation establishment was useless. While the economy experts warn about the growing debt-to-GDP ratio as the Empire continues to develop rapidly during Mulyawanto’s first term. The negative side during his first term was the rise in corruption cases. The rise was believed to be the result of the National Anti-Corruption Commission that swiftly detected any corruption possibilities that occurred at any level throughout the Empire. Most of the cases have been going on for too long and just caught during the term. Nevertheless, the rise in corruption cases gives mixed reactions.

With all that happened during the 2015-2020, Mulyawanto succeeded in bringing his party and alliance back to victory in the 2020 general election. In his second term, Mulyawanto continued his equal development policy. The states have started to grow economically with ease of transportation both on land and sea. As the Empire consists of many islands, Mulyawanto focused on developing the maritime sector, especially port connectivity. His vision is to build a huge port in the eastern part of the Empire because previously the largest port in the east of the Empire was only Mangkasara. And the eastern part is serviced by Mangkasara and Junggalu. However, his rapid development had increased concern from economists and his opponents. They continue to warn about debt-to-GDP ratios that have risen significantly and are almost reaching the ceiling regulated under the law which is 40%. While some of his policies began to be questioned. Such as the universal healthcare where the government failed to paid the hospitals under the universal healthcare contract, the increase of universal healthcare monthly payment especially for higher room class, education policy which create wider gap between the educated west and less educated east as the western states have higher education budget than the eastern states and last is the rise of Mulyawanto’s family members into some governmental position in state-level which rise the nepotism concern from the citizen.

Image
Shellomita Ariadna Pujawati
Despite all the issues circling around the government, Mulyawanto was still optimistic with his popularity. And to strengthen his party position in the Kawula Graha, he decided to speed up the holding of general elections from the supposed 2025 to mid-2024. His mission was to secure his and his party's position in Kawula Graha so his policies can be implemented without much questioning. It also helped him to avoid a vote of no confidence, an issue that have been circulated from late 2023. But apparently, his confidence became the dome of him. He never anticipated the rise of nationalist and neo-conservatism in the Empire. Foreign observers during the 2024 election campaign noticed a lot of smear campaigns were circulated to demeaning Mulyawanto’s popularity. His negativity was blown up such as high debt increase, concern of nepotism and his failure to control inflation. They noticed that Mulyawanto was the most criticized Mahapatih Anom in the Empire’s history, even surpassing Murjiono Ali. And as predicted, MSDA lost the 2024 general election after finishing second. The winner is Aliansi Nasional Coalition. Their leader, Shellomita Ariadna Pujawati officially became the new Mahapatih Anom. She is the first female Mahapatih Anom and the youngest in the Empire’s history. On 20 October 2024, she took the oath and assumed the position of Mahapatih Anom.

Father Knows Best State

Postby Seeberg » Sun Nov 09, 2025 12:17 am

“They told me to do some commentary about current events, like the cruelty of clinging to ever diminishing hope or how Jerusalem has fallen,” said Sigismund Schiltze and adjusted his feathered green felt cap, “but how can you say something about today and tomorrow without firstly discoursing protractedly on the many yesterdays of time gone by,” he continued and took a long swig from his stein while browsing the library of the Institute for Sozial Research, out west in the St. Paulina Quarter. “So while you might expect a small treatise on fading beliefs or Debbie no longer doing Dallas, I instead invite you to sit down and brace yourself for the continued ending of How The Horkenheimers Ended Up Here.” Herr Schiltze devoured his last bite of a particularly well rounded Rouladen and smacked his lips in contentment, before continuing: “Call me old fashioned, but when the beer goes flat, you drink it anyways, so I suggest we now truly try to stick the landing and go to Part 14, wherein the Horkenheim program keeps marching on, the Seebergundian SuperLiga is born, and people in general engage themselves in most everything except FußBall.”

“It was never a given, the continued existence of The Horkenheimers and their escapades abroad. The very establishment of a national FußBall team, not to mention actually sending them out Beyond-The-Berge, was clearly an anomaly in Seebergundian history. Alas, that is what happened.

The IE did a thorough evaluation of participation in the 21st IAC, and they concluded with a recommendation of continuing the Horkenheimer program. It’s unknown whether their driving force was to do with notions of sunk cost, thirst for revenge, or perhaps even genuine excitement at what that last win against The Spartan Dominion promised going forward, but it matters little.

The most surprising thing of all was of course that the top management of the SFV, and its head Doktor Armin Kluckhohn, went along with their recommendation, but it is likely that he and they never really grasped the implications of it all at the time. The reports were filed and passed forward according to all the rules of the game, and no one seemed to mind or care. Perhaps it is an inherent vice of an overly bureaucratized society that sometimes things get lost in the mix, to speak in the parlance of our times, and in general that first IAC endeavour mostly went under the radar for top brass and simple peon alike, with none of the big newspapers or SeeTV (which at this point had significantly broadened their repertoire) reporting on it.

Doktor Kluckhohn was aware, of course, but he never seemed very interested and long insisted on keeping those Horkenheimers playing Football somewhere far-off a completely separate issue from the domestic game of FußBall being played at home, seeing no real natural connection between the two. This state of affairs no doubt acted as a hindrance for Horkenheimer development, since Coach Adorno only had intermittent access to «his» players in the years between the 21st and the 22nd IAC competitions, and when he was finally able to collect them all it was often a matter of once again un-learning their FußBall proclivities and re-learn how to best play Football.

The team that eventually traveled to the distant lands of Britonisea to play in the 22nd IAC was more or less the same that had played in the 21st edition, so they had a modicum of experience. Unfortunately, that did not do them much good, as they performed atrociously, getting completely pummeled by teams representing strange places like Adab and Aphrilia, but also the more familiar foe of Crpostran. Their total tally ended with one lonely point - after barely managing a draw against something called Borschtslatvia - and the humiliation stung even worse than their inaugural attempt a few years earlier.

Like before, The Horkenheimers and the IE returned home. The players proceeded to lick their wounds and once again rejigger themselves from playing Football to playing FußBall, whereas the SFV functionaries initiated their post-IAC evaluation. No one knows what the IE evaluation would’ve concluded with, had it been conducted uninterrupted, because they never got to finish. Unlike in previous instances, this time word of The Horkenheimers’ embarrassing performances was reported on in the capital press and eventually reached the halls of government, and the desk of Doktor Kanzler Hieronymus von Schopenhegel.

The good Doktor Kanzler - a traditionalist progressive with a slight reactionary bent - was not amused with learning about the shameful antics of The Horkenheimers, let alone learning of the existence of The Horkenheimers altogether. The rumours speak of a very tense cabinet meeting, where Doktor Kanzler Schopenhegel and others loudly complained about a rouge SFV establishing unauthorized national teams and having them represent The Gemeinschaft abroad without government blessing, only to be confronted with documentation unquestionably proving that they had in fact not only been informed, but also approved of, both the establishing of The Horkenheimers, their IAC participation, and even the evaluation report recommending continuing the Horkenheimer program. In the cabinet’s defense, they handled a comically huge amount of case papers on a daily basis, and the mentioned documents had been presented to them as parts of voluminous packages of SFV orientations about changes in FußBall regulations, but still.

The scandal was a fact. The minister in charge of Seebergundian Leichtathletik - one Tilman Neuner, who later died in a bizarre bratwürst accident - was fired and Doktor Kanzler Schopenhegel himself resumed oversight of the SFV directly. The expected rolling of SFV heads (figuratively, of course, those times were behind us) surprisingly never occurred, and instead Doktor Kluckhohn was ordered in no uncertain terms to dedicate his resources towards redeeming the Gemeinschaft’s damaged reputation by making The Horkenheimers a competitive force, and preferably winning this Grässliches IAC competition so the World-Beyond-The-Berge could truly understand Seebergundian superiority. It was a pivotal moment, no doubt.

Doktor Kluckhohn was a loyal civil servant and diligently followed orders. All the Horkenheim players were to relinquish their usual FußBalling duties and train with Coach Adorno - supervised by the IE - full time in preparation for the 23rd IAC, which would eventually take place in a far-far away land known as Reçueçn. Coach Adorno was naturally thrilled, and he and the team were even given their own facilities in the northern parts of fair Brinterberg (formerly used by BSV Oxwaldstadt and not currently in use by the successor VfB Brinterberg).

At the same time, Doktor Kluckhohn was adamant that the Horkenheim program was still something different from domestic FußBall, and he wanted no cross-contamination whatsoever. The people out there Beyond-The-Berge could have their Football, and it was unfortunate that the situation required the continuation of the Horkenheim program, Doktor Kluckhohn reasoned, but the proper way of doing this was allowing Coach Adorno to train his men and win that dreadful foreign Wettbewerb as quickly as possible. Then, the niedrige World-Beyond-The-Berge would understand Seebergundian superiority, the improper Horkenheim experiment could be disbanded, and The Gemeinschaft and the SFV could go back to playing FußBall.

It seems like the prolonged and dedicated preparations worked wonders for The Horkenheimers, and it is fair to say it was a different football team entering the pitches in Reçueçn for the 23rd IAC, than the one who had completed in the 21st and 22nd editions. The Seebergundian mannschaft shocked their group opponents and achieved wins against teams like Saterun, Woodsmere and Abanhfleft, earning them a historical progression to the knockout stages of the tournament. The behemoth Juvencus proved too strong in the Round of 16, but by any measure the entire endeavour had to be considered a great success.

It was deemed such a success, in fact, that Doktor Kluckhohn felt like he and the SFV had now delivered on their task of rebuilding Seebergundia’s reputation, and he in no uncertain terms instructed the IE to conclude their evaluation of the 23rd IAC with a recommendation of terminating the Horkenheim program, since its goals had been - sort of - achieved. Doktor Kanzler Schopenhegel diagreed. Our dear leader had developed taste, you see, not only for international acclaim, but for Football. Most worried about his gamble on the Horkenheimers misfiring, he had ordered continuous briefings from the IE functionaries present in Reçueçn, and these reports, coupled with the ongoing coverage from The Brinterberger Beobachter, lit something within the good Doktor Kanzler.

Instead of terminating the Horkenheim program, Doktor Kanzler Schopenhegel dismissed Doktor Kluckhohn as head of the SFV and appointed Walter Freudlingen from the IE in his place, giving the new director a radical order of restructuring the entirety of Seebergundian FußBall to make it compliant with the internationally recognized version known as Football. This, of course, kicked off an unprecedented organizational overhaul within the SFV and the world of FußBall, where rules and regulations needed to be updated, changed or scrapped, all the judges needed reschooling, copious amounts of information leaflets being produced and distributed, and teams and players learning to adapt to the new game (which was still, somewhat confusingly, to be called FußBall).

The most visible result of all this effort was the disbandment of the Brinterberger Liga and establishment of the Seebergundian SuperLiga (SSL). The most radical part of the new Liga - apart from the fact that for all intents and purposes it housed a different game than its predecessor - was that it widened its geographical reach and included not only the capital clubs, but also the associations from the smaller towns in neighboring valleys.

The reason for this expansion was twofold. For one, Coach Adorno had initiated a project of mapping potential Horkenheimers from provincial clubs and had found them full of potential. Secondly, with increasingly fewer capital clubs (Staad FBV had recently incorporated the remains of a BSV Mordorheim torn to pieces by an infected internal conflict) it was deemed necessary to include the provincial clubs to achieve a suitable number of participating associations.

Eventually, it was decided that the new SSL would contain 10 teams: FC Felina, BSV St. Paulina, VfB Brinterberg, Staad FBV, SV Brinterberg, SG Rothaus, SVG Kügeldorf, VfLü Bernsdorf, PuFg Hinterdorf, and the newly formed Associazione Calcio Casa Rossa, which was a club hailing from the town of Rothaus, founded by people from the Vulgo-Latinisch linguistic minority (discriminatory laws against these people speaking or otherwise communicating in their preferred tongue had recently been lifted, and they were suddenly just all over the place and in your face).

The effort put into completely transforming the world of Seebergundian FußBall was so all-encompassing that few within the SFV even noticed that it was soon time for yet another IAC and The Horkenheimers again going abroad to compete. This time the destination was Saterun in the fabled lands of Lazarus, where The Horkenheimers went up against the likes of Indusse, Juvencus and new faces Choppuhausen and Soviet Kem. Coach Adorno and his team - this time around featuring many new faces - never managed to recreate their success from the 23rd IAC and failed to progress from the group stage, but not without securing an impressive revenge against Juvencus (besting them 2-0) and a hardfought win against Soviet Kem. Unbeknownst at the time, The Horkenheimers would meet the Choppyhausenian team again under even more exciting circumstances, but that’s still a yesterday or two away.”

Sigismund Schiltze paused to catch his breath, and then asked for a refill of his stein. When it was again filled to the brim, and the foam was starting to settle, he proceeded to enjoy a long swig. Upon having sufficiently moistened his palate, he continued:

”This is normally around when I bring these things to a close, but I’m afflicted with this lingering feeling that we’ve neglected those of fair Brinterberg not directly engaged in the world of FußBall for these last parts of our story, and that needs rectifying.

You see, as part of the transition from Altes FußBall to Neues FußBall and from the Brinterberger Liga to the Seebergundian SuperLiga, many aspects of the still functional Code for Spectatorial Decency was upheld, although the Spectatorial Harmonie-Korps was disbanded and things like singing and non-explicit handgesturing was to be allowed in the stands (inspired by IAC-experiences). This seemingly created perfect conditions for a return of flair and favor to the pitches of Seebergundia. But what of the people? A National Team, people travelling abroad, international humiliation and redemption, government scandals, the complete overhaul of FußBall, the establishing of a new Liga. The intricate Spannung of it all?

No.

As a citizen of fair Brinterberg, throughout the 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th IAC, and the birth of the SSL, you’d be forgiven if you walked the streets and thought it was just another Dienstag. Because it was. Because nobody cared. Nobody gathered around screens or newspapers to dissect the latest tactical catastrophe, discuss the latest rulings or stylish goals, no matter if The Horkenheimers did well or not. Nobody felt an inkling of loyalty or affection for, or interest in, the domestic teams (this might have been different out there in the provinces; who knows). The distinction between Football and FußBall had not taken hold, and people's view of FußBall as antiquated and extremely boring was still very much the norm.

No, throughout the astonishingly rapid developments in the world of FußBall, the citizens of Brinterberg were rather deeply engrossed in doing what they did best: being Brinterbergian.

Many were keeping themselves engaged in bureaucratic jousting, a time-honored tradition in the Gemeinschaft. Take, for instance, Günther von Tulpe, my good friend and tireless chairman of a northeastern tenant association, who is also a part-time detective. While The Horkenheimers were busy mostly losing and occasionally winning, and the SFV laboured with remodelling FußBall, Günther was busy debating the legality of pressure valves or the ethics of water charge adjustments by day, and solving the mystery of the missing Seebergundian words by night. “It’s not that interesting a story,” he said, after cracking the case wide open and receiving thunderous applause from the Council for the Preservation of the Seebergundian Sprache. But it was.

On the other side of town, the academics of the Institute for Sozial Research were as critical as ever, but had long since tired of rejecting FußBall as a bourgeois opiate, with prominent critical theorists like Walter Fromm and Helga Benjamin more interested in pointing out symptoms of late-stage Gemeinschaft decay or dissecting how the metaphysical implications of municipal water pressure or the semiotics of pastry layering was key to subverting hegemonic social structures, if they weren't laughing about feeble attempts by lesser academics to prove how Systemvertrauen was a legitimate mechanism for reducing sozial complexities. Hah! Nicht very kritisch at all! Among them was also another acquaintance of mine, young Hedvig Bergson, a visiting doctoral student and professional nihilist who proposed taking Critical Theory in a new direction, but likewise had no time for football. She was too busy proving that life is a biological error and that consciousness is a cruel joke played by evolution and that humanity’s only real option is to embrace Fistelförmig. A word that, in Brinterberg, denotes a hollow so deep it echoes through your soul and socks.

And the older kids and young adults among us? Had they taken notice of this rediscovery of the beauty of the beautiful game? Nein. The ones who perhaps first truly abandoned the game of FußBall had no time and interest in looking back. They were too busy dressing and dancing provocatively in the squares and salons of southern Brinterberg, on Gneisbänderung Platz or along Ordengeimschaftstraße, shaving their moustaches, refusing to wear tophats and chant along to the newest tunes from the Teutonic Tang Clan and their hypnotizing blend of critical theory lingo with equestrian slang and some heavy misogyny over chopped up violin beats. If they weren’t instead engaged in the theosophical revival scene in the rustikal Heilige Birgitta Quarter, being lured into all sorts of spiritual awakenings by bearded men and attempting to achieve direct communion with the übersinnliche Welt through smearing themselves with scented oils and practicing eurythmie, and other interpretive movements, in the parks, particularly Baden-Baden-Baden Park and Hügel Albrecht.

Even the national broadcaster, SeeTV, did initially not deem following the sudden renewal of FußBall very interesting. They instead tried to capture the attention of young people by producing hidden camera shows like Pardon My Straflosigkeit, which had been cancelled after three episodes, but not before traumatizing half the city with custard-based pranks and screaming “Abspritzen!” at innocent pedestrians. This changed after Doktor Kanzler Schopenhegel’s growing interest in FußBall, however, and SeeTV did air all Horkenheimer games from the 24th IAC. Not that anyone was watching, but still.

Of course, there were exceptions to the rule and some citizens of fair Brinterberg did embrace the «discovery» of Neues FußBall. It was just that their interest didn’t necessarily manifest in following The Horkenheimers or any of their local teams. No, it was rather playing the game Fußball Manager X3000, which was so immersive they preferred it to the real thing. Because here, they could implement their own tactical systems - The Tülpe mit Stinging Bees, Das Exploding Tannenbaum or The Bohrkopf Pyramid, so much more exciting than Das Alte 3-5-3 - and lead obscure teams like Roterlicht Knokschäft to virtual glory.

And the upstanding people of Brinterbergundian society? They had also mostly abandoned FußBall. There was simply not enough time to keep engaged in such prosaic nonsense when the very fabric of society was crumbling, mostly due to what all the other citizens of Brinterberg were up to and how the government was consistently failing at keeping all these unwanted developments at bay and allowing the degeneration of society. The cafés along Rheingutstraße and Philharmonisches Platz were filled with furrowed brows, murmured outrage and tingling pants over the latest essays, Tv-shows, new age gurus, provocative clothing and schrecklich music. The old guard spent their days sipping herbal infusions and twirling their moustaches in dignified rage, whispering about how it «was all out there now.»

The modern FußBall Revolution was a quiet one, that most remarkably went by more or less unnoticed by anyone not directly involved. That would all change however, when somebody suggested to Coach Adorno and the SFV that they should broaden their competitive arena and sign up for qualifications to the 100th World Cup and its preceding Baptism of Fire.”

Normally a case of Ebola would be an instant media circus, but given the delicate situation, even before Ottilie was through the doors of the Hôpital Croix-Rousse in Reçueçn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had put in place an injunction to prevent news of the case from being made public. Ottilie could only wonder what the doctors must have thought when a platoon of soldiers had carted in a frail, unassuming woman, set up a quarantine zone, and demanded the strictest secrecy. Did they think she was some kind of spy? She never would have thought that in just a few months her life would be this exciting, but now here she was, caught up in the middle of an international diplomatic crisis.

Ottilie did not let a mere case of Ebola hold her back. As soon as she was no longer contagious, she threw herself back into her work. She was too kind-hearted to do anything else. If the king himself had been laid low with Ebola, she couldn’t imagine how bad things were in the rest of the country. Ottilie had never heard of anywhere with the same levels of income inequality and poverty that existed in Abahamba, so now that her career, not to mention her personal life, had become so intertwined with this far-off nation, she felt beholden to its people. They were owed the same rights and care that people anywhere else in the multiverse expected, but it seemed that there was no one else willing to provide it.

In fact, a brief rundown of the forces arrayed against Abahamba was quite dismaying. For a hundred years, the nation had had no access to the benefits of globalization that had catalyzed such rapid progress in the rest of the world. The country had no natural resources to speak of. Foreign investment, human capital, and international aid were all entirely lacking. Worse, Ottilie had to admit that despite how welcoming the royal family had been, the Abahamban monarchy took the best share of all that the nation produced for its own benefit. Ottilie had spent all her time inside the palace compound, and the staggering display of wealth there only served to underline the poverty in the rest of the country. Worst of all, not only did the nation’s own royalty live in luxury off the hard work of the country’s citizens, but Abahamba’s neighbors were also lining up against it. Banija in particular, the powerhouse of the region, now that it shared a border with Abahamba, took a keen interest in the happenings there. And yet any action the Banijans took was done in their own interests, not for the good of the people in Abahamba.

Ottilie figured it was down to her to look out for the Abahambans. The moment she was convalescent, she scheduled a call with Émile Rougemont to debrief after her trip.

“Are you sure you don’t need more time to recover, Ottilie?” he asked her. “We’ve all been really worried about you, and your health is the number one priority right now.”

“Thanks Émile, I’m fine. I’m getting better, thanks to the power of contemporary medicine. But they don’t have that in Abahamba. The doctor in the palace there seemed powerless in the face of the epidemic. I just hope he’s okay. I shudder to think what will happen if the epidemic breaks out of the quarantine at the palace. We’ve got to do something.”

“Well, given that your experiences over the past few months have made you Reçueçn’s foremost expert on Abahamba, I think the ministry will take all of your suggestions very seriously. What do you recommend?”

“We all know Abahamba is practically destitute, but things could get a lot worse. They’re facing a trifecta of threats, and each one aggravates the next: first they’re looking down the barrel of an imminent Ebola epidemic. Next, given that the epidemic is affecting the royal family, it threatens to destabilize the monarchy. Finally, Robel Ezera’s machinations in the WCC are clearly representative of a wider Banijan conspiracy to increase their influence within Abahamba, something they will find only too easy if the royal family is already struggling.”

“So what’s the solution?”

“What Abahamba needs most of all right now is friends,” Ottilie said. “If we can assure them that Reçueçn will support them through this difficult period, I think we can do a lot of good.”

“Ok, but what will that support look like? It won’t be hard to get the chambre maïorale to approve emergency assistance for a disease outbreak, but it’ll be harder to convince them to prop up a monarchy whose main claim to fame is driving gold-plated golf carts around in Arrosia’s poorest country. And if you are trying to get the government to stand up to an imperialist power like Banija, good luck, that’s simply not going to happen.”

“You’ve hit the nail on the head, Émile. I think if we can provide medical support, we can target the most foundational issue. And like you said, the added benefit is that it will be the most politically feasible option as well.”

Émile pondered Ottilie’s advice, but he was quick to agree. “So what are our first steps? What are the priorities?”

“The Abahamban government has so far kept this Ebola epidemic entirely under wraps. I think the ministry absolutely made the right call with the media injunction when I got medevacced—obviously people will have seen the helicopter to the airport, but the main thing is stopping the ‘e-word’ from causing a big scare. That would be embarrassing for the Abahambans, and since they’re keeping it secret for now, doing the same will go a long way toward showing them that we’re on their side.”

“Ok, so first priority: we don’t mention Ebola until the Abahambans do,” Émile recapped.

“Right. But that doesn’t mean we can’t help them prevent an epidemic—we just have to be subtle. If we can put together a package to establish some tropical medicine clinics with long-term support—something I think Abahamba needs anyway—it won’t be hard to send along a few quarantine experts and contagious disease specialists. Abahamba will see what we’re doing, but it won’t raise eyebrows elsewhere.”

“I think you’re right that the mere act of sending epidemiologists to a developing country won’t in and of itself alert the multiverse to a potential Ebola epidemic,” Émile concurred. “But it will certainly raise eyebrows. If Banija is paying as close attention to the situation in Abahamba as you say they are, it won’t go unnoticed that we’re suddenly sending an aid package.”

“So much the better,” insisted Ottilie. “The world should take notice. Arrosians ought to be ashamed of how little they’re doing to help their poorer neighbors.”

“I fear the rest of the world, rather than seeing an opportunity to help, may see the chance for a power grab,” said Émile. “But I admire your altruism, and I want to make this happen. I’ll talk to some people in the ministry’s foreign aid branch so we can get preparations ready, and I’ll connect with my contacts in the chambre maïorale to start building approval there.”

“Wonderful, thanks so much Émile,” said Ottilie. “In the meantime, I’d love to return to my post in Abahamba to keep building our relationship there.”

Émile was incredulous. “You can’t be serious,” he protested. “You haven’t even been discharged yet. Now you want to go back!?”

“The doctors assured me I’m no longer contagious,” said Ottilie. “They said I got over the disease extremely quickly; although it’s only been a few days, I’ve already recovered almost entirely.”

It was true. Most Ebola cases took 10 days before recovery began, but in the space of a week, Ottilie was good to go. She had recovered so quickly that it was likely that the king, who had evidently come down with the disease before she had, was probably still in the throes of illness.

“On top of that,” Ottilie went on, “no one else has the same connection with the Abahambans that I do. My WCC investigation earned me a lot of points with the crown prince. Besides Minister Lassalle and my own extraction team, I’m the only Reçuecian government official to have met them, and I spent almost a week in the royal palace. Someone has to lay the groundwork for this aid package we’ve outlined, and I think the Abahambans would appreciate having a Reçuecian there as a symbol of our friendship.”

“Okay, okay,” Émile laughed. “You’re quite determined, I can see that. Since you were already assigned to a longer posting, it should be easy to have you cleared to go back. I’ll see what I can do.”

In the end, Ottilie only spent a few days back in Reçueçn, and the brevity of her stay was entirely due to her own zeal. As soon as she was out of the hospital, she caught a flight back to Lukasa. This time, Émile made sure that she was no mere specialist contractor—instead, she had now been appointed as a full ambassador.

Ambassador Thorvex. Ottilie smiled to herself as she looked out the plane window over Lukasa. It definitely had a nice ring to it. The plane bumped down onto the tarmac, rolled to a stop, and opened the cabin doors. As Ottilie stepped down the airstairs, the rush of warm tropical air brought another smile to her face. It was evening, and thunder rumbled in the distance, promising the evening rainshower typical of the Abahamban capital. As the new ambassador, she had a lot of work to do, but she was confident that the hardest part was behind her. She’d faced down the despotic Banijan WCC vice president, she’d met with royalty, and now she’d recovered from Ebola; her arrival here foreshadowed the dawn of great things to come.

Didn’t it? Thunder rumbled again as the sun dipped below the horizon, but Ottilie paid no heed. Her course was set.

PART 7 / The New Races (Educational, Informal)
Written by Emma Rhodes

As the horse racing industry continues to grow and evolve, so has the many aspects of the sport itself. Precaution, safety, marketing, infrastructure, medicine, anything that you could name about the industry has seen some form of development within the past few years. Now why do I bring this up? Because admittedly, horse racing isn't one of the safest industries or sports out there, that much anyone who is involved with the sport knows. Not every horse is treated well, some run races they really shouldn't, and sometimes the AHRA makes a mistake. But the latter is true for many Aphrilian sporting organizations, which is why the laws here are very strict. In order to make sure that everyone is satisfied with as many things as possible, Aphrilian law for sports (And admittedly everything else), has always been rather tight and there's little to no wiggle room. One of those mistakes according to many fans of the sport, is that there isn't a lot of races for three year old horses within certain time frames. But that changes today.

Hello there, Emma Rhodes here and welcome to... Not really a part of Racing For Rookies, but considering this is another major shift for the horse racing scene since the Rosschester Stakes was promoted to Grade I status in 2017 and everyone has been talking about it, I need to talk about it too. A few months ago, before I started this little series talking about getting into the Aphrilian horse racing scene, Medallion and Rose Racing vouching for plenty of smaller owners, trainers, and even a few jockeys, sent a petition to the Aphrilian Horse Racing Association to perhaps expand the Aphrilian horse racing calendar to give three year old horses more Grade I races they could participate in domestically. If you mapped out the Grade I races into a calendar, you'll realize that there's three months worth of empty schedule for three year olds between the National Mile Championship and the Aphrilia Memorial. Whilst this gap has usually been used to encourage Aphrilian horses to attend international races, it simply isn't a good enough reason as many smaller sized operations often can't afford to race abroad, and not every horse can adapt to new climates quickly. There's also plenty of other reasons as to why this petition had been made in the first place alongside what I've already stated, but we should get to the main bit, which is the reason I'm even writing this.

Just some time ago, the Aphrilian Horse Racing Association announced the formation of several new Grade I races that will be hosted throughout a single weekend, akin to the Brunstadt Breeders Challenge. This all new weekend of races will go under the name of the Aphrilian Champions Festival, a moment for racing fans to gather and celebrate (And supposedly a whole lot more than the usual weekend outings for races themselves) held on the third week of November in order to serve as an alternative to the Collaboration Cup or the Sovereign Cup Winter. In order to not provide any preferential treatment to the racecourses that already host Grade I events, this all-new Champion Festival is reportedly to be held at an all new racecourse that we don't even know the name of. Now, this Champions Festival is also supposedly meant to have events for all distances and categories, so how many new Grade I races do you think there will be? Well, maybe trying to guess it would be a bit of a pain, so how about we get into it? Here's a list of the new Grade I races to be hosted sometime in the future as part of the new Aphrilian Champions Festival.

RESTRICTED TO TWO-YEAR OLDS
Champions Festival Juvenile Mile (1800m, Clockwise)
Champions Festival Juvenile Mile Fillies (1800m, Clockwise)
Champions Festival Juvenile Sprint (1200m, Counterlockwise)

Three races for the two year olds, adding two mile races that are counter to the Colts Starborne Stakes and the Fillies Starlight Stakes by going clockwise instead of counterclockwise. This is good as Newgarden Racecourse isn't that large compared to some of the other Grade I venues that are available in Aphrilia. Not only that, but they are also 200m longer which makes then a good stepping stone to prepare for the Racing Hopefuls Stakes. On the other hand, having a sprint Grade I race for two year olds is another great idea due to the fact that most sprinters here would have to start at a mile for their Grade I races and they may not fully develop to race at 1400m or less properly. A single furlong can make or break a race, even if it's between 1400m and 1600m. And before this, the first sprint Grade I a horse would run is the Lysenne Sprint, a track that isn't as forgiving as others while you can only prepare by running Grade III and Grade II sprints, which also are not as common as you would think. Overall, very solid additions in my opinion.

RESTRICTED TO THREE-YEAR OLDS AND UP
Champions Festival Stayers (2800m, Clockwise)
Champions Festival Classic (2200m, Counterclockwise)
Champions Festival Distaff (2000m, Counterclockwise, Fillies Only)
Champions Festival Mile (1600m, Clockwise)
Champions Festival Mile Fillies (1600m, Clockwise, Fillies Only)
Champions Festival Sprint (1200m, Clockwise)

Six new Grade I races to be hosted on Champions Festival weekend, and that amounts to a total of nine new Grade I races. Which, not going to lie, considering this is one massive weekend of Grade I races, isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Of course, let's talk about them. The Stayers is a solid addition in large due to the fact that the Lady Covenant is 2800m as well, and this would allow fillies to compete against colts at longer distances without having to wait around until the Sovereign Cup Spring, which very few fillies can handle. I don't believe there's complaints about The Sprint either, as both colts and fillies run sprint races here and sprint races are overall very competitive. I think the Classic and Distaff are fine, though I am once again confused by the different distance, though perhaps that may have been a deliberate choice? I'm not sure what the basis for 2200m and 2000m are in this case, but we won't get an explanation until later. The Mile and Mile Fillies are alright, no complaints.

So, in the end, I think this seems to be a novel idea. Labelling this whole weekend as a "Festival" also allows it to be different to the other race weekends. Out of all the countries in Eluwa, Aphrilia is the only one that really didn't have a sort of "Championship" where there are multiple high-level races on the same weekend. Of course, as far as I'm aware, the track that will supposedly host this Champions Festival is still being built, so we may not see the culmination of this petition until later on. But it is heading in the right track, and the complaints that the three month gap of no Grade I races domestically between the NMC and the Memorial were justifiable. My question is, will this work? As it's hosted between the Collaboration Cup and the Sovereign Cup Winter, there is undeniably a worry on if those races will see less participation due to this new festival. And also, I would like to apologize for this not really being a part of Racing For Rookies, but some of you that had chosen to do your own research requested this. For the next, and perhaps likely the last part, I'd like to talk about the owners, jockeys, and trainers... As well as a more recent phenomenon that has actually contributed to another boom in horse racing's popularity as of currently. I think you guys would like that, yes? Either way, that's all from me this time around.

See you guys in the next part.
"...I'll never trust the same, I'll see friendship as just another game...! Full of winners and losers, selfish abusers... You failed to fly but somehow I’m to blame...!?"

For forty-nine minutes the dream was alive, the stadium erupted when Pék smashed the ball into the top corner and the noise didn't stop till Hiraide slotted home after a pinpoint pass from Nieuwboom. With that the Carpathia and Ruthenia crowd fell silent, an eerie silence as usually at that moment the opposing teams fans would fill that silence but Ko-oren and their fans are known for what is known as a post football approach. Although this campaign seems to be dying the usual post football ideal from Ko-oren smashing five and even six goals past teams. The quiet hung heavy in the stadium till the final whistle blew and with Qusmo escaping with a 4-3 victory over Shizuna Rem Misurugi the players and fans left dejectly knowing the next game against Qusmo was a must win game.

Going into the match with a Qusmo side on a seven game win streak, having scored a simply staggering thirty goals and only letting in seven. More goals scored in those seven games that we've managed so far this entire qualifying campaign. The Carpathia and Ruthenia side the opposite, completely dropping form, and unable to convert games. The match started how those expectations had set up, Qusmo dominating the game and Helek-Pertz smashing home to put Qusmo in the clear. However it seems perhaps we've infected Qusmo with that same stuttering inability to convert games, despite the initial dominance the Qusmo side didn't convert that dominance into more goals and coming back into the second half seemed to not quite click how they had been doing. Missed passes, unforced errors, one unforced error allowing Lecce to run through on goal from near the half way line and chipping over Alfan-Dynom.

If fans thought this was perhaps the see-saw of form turning over again in our favour, they were sorely disappointed as our inability to press home our advantage continued and the final whistle blew with our second draw in a row. This was a must win game to have any ability to control our fate, we find ourselves two and three points adrift of Qusmo and Ko-oren respectively, both of whom have a game in hand. With a bye in the upcoming window we may find ourselves down in fourth place at the end of that window and mathematically out of a return to the World Cup.

DESTINY'S FORCE

Away to Biyambi and knowing this was a huge match Eleo Vicard and his players were focused on the task at hand. With a win they could be 3 points clear of the pack and for the first time, have a bit a breathing room at the top of the table. The match starts of fast and furious. Ingalcer Pardau tries a long shot that troubles the keeper but was parried away. The next chance is started by Rodulf Siebault who creates an incisive pass to Alaide Mitregasque who squares it to Huberdeau Audac for the 1-0 lead. Biyambi then fights back with a huge cross that finds itself in the back of the net. The Auprussians then turned on the jets. Prospierre Aregnac-Tignon goes on a huge run and manages to find Alaide Mitregasque who coolly slides it home for the 2-1 lead. After halftime the Auprussians dominated possession and pelted Biyambi with chance after chance. Finally in the 71st minute Samuel Lithobert finds Huberdeau Audac again on a cross resulting in a 3-1 victory. Biyambi after halftime never really got going and thus takes a considerable blow in the race for Qualification.

Vicard will still stick with Coraine Du Peniveaux as the starting Right-Winger against Eastfield Lounge. However, Rogeur Pagault will be rotated out for Samuel Lithobert. Eleo Vicard explained this change: "I want the best lineup available against Eastfield Lodge and I feel both Coraine and Samuel have proven that they can help us win matches. Rogeur of course will start in the matches after Eastfield, but I want both the experience and flexibility to start this next match." The Auprussia media were not going to disagree with him on his decisions. Vicard had looked like a managerial genius with his selection and man management. His tactics reflected the aggressive style of his predecessor especially with carrying on the 4-4-2 however, he also managed to solidify the weakness of Auprussia historically the defense. This had made Auprussia a menace during qualifying and also left them tied for first in terms of goals against.

This next match against Eastfield Lodge is worth everything for both teams. Notably, if Eastfield Lodge cannot qualify automatically they have a grim prospect in the playoffs. They have not won a playoff game at all in their history. Auprussia is at the brink of their first automatic qualification ever. A year after the dreary failure of Pierre Camanin's last year would be totally forgotten if Eleo Vicard can pull this off. All of this and Auprussia has a game in hand as opposed to their peers (Both Eastfield Lodge and Biyambi have played 13 games while Auprussian only has played 12). Of course, since the occasion was so grand the next match was going to held in Parc De Nasional. Eleo Vicard also did not mince his words when talking about Eastfield Lodge: "They are a good team, I feel like our previous result against them is not a demonstration of our quality. We will be prepared for them". The attack had proven to be effective against all opposition so far and with the massive improvements to the defense the match is as even as it gets.

The other matches after Eastfield Lodge are not as tough but the Auprussians would still need to finish the job if they managed a result against the Eastfielders. The next 3 matches from an outsider's perspective could be all victories but Vicard was not going to take his foot off of the gas just because his opponents are perceived as being "easier". Efnakia away could prove to be slightly tougher than Auprussia's previous encounter with the team. Their previous match resulted in a 5-2 drubbing of the beleaguered Efnakians. Salagalu at home is after that and was one of the Auprussians worst results this campaign. A 1-1 draw to a team that most will tell you now is very much inferior to the Auprussians but the match itself was a rock fight and a slog that Vicard wants to avenge. The last match of the campaign was against Santira away and Vicard is looking to do the much of the same against them. The previous result against the Santirans was a 6-0 massacre that broke the record of Auprussia's largest margin of victory.

This is the most important stretch that Auprussia will embark on in years. Will the grey and blue finish the job? or will there be more twists in this already eventful group stage? Only time will tell.

Ngwazi Strikers have lost a higher percentage of their Super League games against PZ Stars than any other side they have faced in the competition's history (43%). 14 games, 6 defeats.

@Zeo69

That's actually incorrect. That crown belongs to the Mighty Mansanduni Union who in the past 7 seasons have beaten Ngwazi Strikers 8-TIMES in 12 meetings, thats about 66.67%. After PZ Stars whoops your behinds, we will finish you off in both the league and the TNB Knockout. You will cry PIG FC.

(The scene changes to the Ngwazi Strikers press room. We see a journalist asking a question to Ngwazi Strikers Manager, Francis Chavula.)

Journalist:
“My name is Orera Khoviwa with Television Biyambi. In the past 7 seasons of the Super League, the Royals have suffered 6 defeats, drawn 5-times and only managed 3 wins against PZ Stars. It seems the Stars have become sort of a bogey man for your team. Do you believe your team has what it takes to beat PZ Stars?”

Francis Chiwaya (Ngwazi Strikers Manager):
“uhmm! That’s a good question. Look here these stats are only there to remind us where we have come from, and not to decide where we are going. Yes it is true that PZ Stars have had the upper hand against us at times but football does not run on such history’s, it runs on moments.

Moreover, let me be honest, most of the losses have come under my management. I take responsibility for that. But what’s also true is that all the wins against PZ Stars have come under me with this same group of players. So, my team does have what it takes to beat PZ Stars.

In addition, I have great respect for PZ Stars’ Manager, Francis Chavula. He managed the Royals before me but if we are to be fair, under his management he failed to beat PZ Stars. He hasn’t been as good with PZ Stars as well, under him the team has failed to qualify for Mandalanusa 4 times, finishing 7th three times.

Right now, the pressure is really on Chavula and his players. They have been the ones getting the results and their fans expect them to keep the run going. For us we just need to focus, enjoy our football, and see what happens. My players have been improving and I truly believe they will play good enjoyable football.
”

(The scene changes to Magome Park Stadium press room, were we see Francis Chavula addressing the press.)

Francis Chavula(PZ Stars Manager & Former Ngwazi Strikers Manager):
“ Francis Chiwaya seems to be speaking big, thinking he is a better manager than me, but he isn’t. The stats do not lie, since I became manager of PZ Stars my team has beaten his team 5-times. Of all the loses that Ngwazi Strikers has suffered, approximately 80% have come from me to Francis Chiwaya’s team. Chiwaya and the Royals faithful should prepare for another loss against us. Chiwaya will eat his words at Ngwazis Park Stadium. ”

(Scene changes to a Bixit video, Bixit is an online video sharing platform in Biyambi.)

FootyNerd32:
“Hey guys it’s me FootyNerd32. I just wanted to chime in on the Chavula vs Chiwaya debate. I will compare Francis Chavula and Francis Chiwaya’s stats from the 08/09 season because that when Chiwaya joined the Super League. In 94 matches Chavula has 35 wins, 36 losses, and 128 points. Chiwaya in 94 matches has 41 wins, 27 losses, and 149 points.

Chavula’s win percentage is 37.23%, loss percentage is 38.30%, his average points per game is 1.36.

Chiwaya’s win percentage is 43.62 %, his loss percentage is 28.72%, and his PPG Is 1.59.

When we compare them Chiwaya has 6 more wins and 9 fewer loses than Chavula. Chiwaya also earms 0.23 more points per game. Furthermore, these stats show us that Chavula’s PZ Stars team has been pretty inconsistent something Ngwazi Strikers also suffered under Chavula’s tenure. As for Chiwaya the records show that his side has been match better having a higher win rate, lower loss rate, and more points. By this metric Chiwaya is the better manager.

By trophies Chiwaya also takes it as he has won the league, FA Cup, and the Top 8 twice. As for Chavula he has won 1 trophy, the FA Cup.

(On the screen flashes Ziwanicell Super League Matchday 5 VS Paul Zamba Stars, in the background we here singing).

(The scene cuts to the stadium, the camera panes across Ngwazi Strikers’ fans posing for the camera, we see others holding placards, on one placard it reads: “MANSANDUNI DOMINANCE IN THE ZIWANICELL SULEB ENDS IN 2013/2014. We see Ngwazi Strikers fans dancing, the sound of vuvuzelas and drums. We see one fan with a bottle of Mkango Lager dusting the Ngwazi Strikers crest on his replica jersey.)

Commentator:
“Good afternoon football fans across our beautiful Nikosho & welcome to a tie that has been highly anticipated. We are live here at the majestic Ngwazis Park Stadium, where we will see the end result of the back and forth that has been happening between Ngwazi Strikers manager, Francis Chiwaya and PZ Stars manager, Francis Chavula.

It must be stated that the man in the opposing dugout today, Francis Chavula is no stranger to this stadium as this is where he built his name, fought his first battles as a manager in this very stadium, the place where he won his first trophy. And today he returns as the enemy.

Across from him, Francis Chiwaya, the man who replaced him, stands with a great fire in his eyes. He is under pressure to correct the record of losing five time against his counterpart only managing to get him three times.

The two men have exchanged words in the build up to this fixture this week. Chiwaya admitted his mistakes but reminded everyone that his counterpart, the man now at PZ Stars, failed to deliver when he was on the Royals touchline. The media loved it and the headlines wrote themselves.

And now here we are, 90 minutes ahead of us. PZ Stars has dominated this tie for the last seven seasons, can Ngwazi Strikers change it today.
The ref is walking up, it seems the whistle is about to go and you can feel the intensity here. This is more than a match, this is redemption versus reputation at Ngwazis Park Stadium. Stay tuned folks for this exciting encounter between these two rivals.
”

(We hear the whistle, immediately PZ Stars attacking midfielder David Joya launches an attack down the left flank, then crosses it in for Steve Banda who immediately shots it. The Ngwazi Strikers quickly clear it but before the team can get back into shape, the ball lands 25 yards out, where it meets Steven Carrick who strikes the ball the first time without thinking. The ball flies through the air, then dips with a spin, bouncing before Royals goalkeeper Harry Garnett. Harry Garnett is slow and the ball skims off the pitch and into the top corner of the net, 0-1.)

Commentator:
“ Oh! my word, can you believe it? 25-seconds in and PZ Stars have struck! The fastest goal in Biyambi Super League history. Beautiful goal by Steven Carrick.
And look at those faces on the Royals bench, pure disbelief.

After a week of talking big this must be a nightmare start for Chiwaya.

Will Ngwazi Strikers recover or will they fall as they have in previous meetings against PZ Stars?

(We see PZ Stars dominate the game, in the 80th minute Captain Mada Masina is brought in, his first match since he got injured after the Top 8 Semi-final first leg. 4 minutes later Mada Masina’s shot deflects in off Rashid Tembo, 1-1)

Commentator:
“ just listen to that roar! Ngwazis Park has come alive!
It’s 1 -1, look at the stands the fans who were ashen are now on their feet chanting their captains name.
For the Royals, this goal is not just an equalizer it’s a statement, it’s a lifeline.
”

(The game is in injury time, in the last minute of injury time, Ngwazi Strikers win a corner. Chifundo Lenpi takes it, Mada Masina jumps over the Stars’ defenders and heads the ball into the net. 2-1. The stadium erupts, the players hug each other, Mada Masina runs up to Francis Chavula and hug him.)

Narrator:
“ As the Royals where winning against PZ Stars, their fellow title contenders had fallen short, losing at home to Mighty Tiger, 1-2. And finally Ngwazi Strikers were top of the table with 10 points, in second place was Mafumu Chiefs with 9 and in third was Mansanduni Union with 8 points.
But would the Royals hold on to first place? This would prove rather difficult as they would be facing off against the team that had beaten them to the Top 8 crown just a few weeks earlier, Mansanduni Union. A side they had not beaten in the last 4 seasons, a team that they had lost to 8 times out of 12 in the league. The Royals had managed to destroy historic records against PZ Stars, would they do it again now against their fiercest rivals?

”Did we lose?”
“We didnt lose, we merely failed to win!”
- Blazing Dragons fans to YTV News

A return to despair?
At: Lhamo, Yangchenia

With another loss to Sernet after their previous loss to Juvencus morale within the Blazing Dragons took a minor setback. It wasn't as bad as the state of morale during their initial win drought, but it was still a setback nonetheless. After a strong comeback in the middle of the tournament it seemed like the Dragons were back on the backfoot, as they lost ground to Free Republics which had overtaken them in rank. Additionally, with the expulsion of the Jeruselem Princesses due to their obsession with nudity, it meant that the Dragons had lost a crucial game they could use to claw their way back up the leaderboard.

However, the flame of hope still burned within the team. They were the bye team on Matchday 13, allowing the team much needed rest in Lhamo, with Princess Sirivani even hosting them in the Royal Palace that night. The next match was Yuezhou, the second-highest ranked team in the bracket. However, they didnt let rank intimidate them. The Yuezhounese, though powerful, in their eyes they werent invincible, they were still vulnerable to some good ol’ Yangini trickery.

Yanginis in Yuezhou
At: Yuezhou

As the team were arriving in Yuezhou, they were shocked to see the country had a similar vibe to it as Yangchenia. Similar culture, similar cuisine, similar streets, even similar looking people and names. It was as if it was another Yangchenia. Minus the freezing temperature of course. In comparison to the frigid air of Yangchenia, Yuezhou felt like a summer day, the temperature balmy.

The streets were bustling with life, vendors selling all kinds of familiar dishes, neon lights lighting the skyline. The locals spoke languages familiar to the team, and it was if they never left Yangchenia in the first place. In a way, it felt like a friendly against another local Yangini team. But this was no ordinary match. No, this match would decide the Dragons' fate.

Sinitic Standoff - Battle of the Y Nations
At: Yuezhou

Welcome back to SportsYN, I am Yi Huanzhi, the host for this match. Today is Matchday 14 of the World Cup, and we bring you today the rematch with Yuezhou - ranked 35th overall. The Blazing Dragons have already fought a confrontation with Yuezhou before, ending it a 0-2 loss, a devastating blow in the Dragons’ early days in the world cup. But now, they were here to rectify that loss, and prevent another devastating defeat. A defeat at this stage of the World Cup would be devastating.

As matchtime approached, the teams proceeded to their positions as they always did. But this time, there was tension in the air. They couldn't lose this time — a loss would be impossible to recover from. Then, the whistle was blown. Both teams immediately began clashing for the ball at midfield, however no single team was able to gain possession of the ball early into the match. The Yuezhounese were strong, but the Yanginis were as well. In the center, Wu Hsaing was attempting to wrestle the ball out of Yuezhounese hands, and on the 15th minute, a breakthrough happened — Wu Hsaing dashing past the Yuezhounese defense and routing goalkeeper Zhao Deliang to score a goal for Yangchenia, giving the nation a one point lead.

But almost immediately, Yuezhou responded. Leona Tsang, one of Yuezhou’s best players came knocking, swiftly maneuvering through the Yangini midfield and defense, before facing off the Yangini goalkeeper, Damdul Gyatso. One shot is all it took, and by the 27th minute, the score was tied 1-1. Both teams went on the offensive, however neither were able to gain ground on the other. Wu Hsaing and Tsamchoe Thaye made their own attempts on the Yuezhounese goal, however none were successful. Leona Tsang and Kara Mingsdottir also followed suit for Yuezhou, however none of them were able to route Gyatso as the match moved into halftime.
As halftime passed and the game pressed on, the same endless back and forth between the two teams held on. However this time — two people stood out, Yesui Erkhet of the Dragons, and Kara Mingsdottir of the Yuezhounese. Both shared similar origins, they were not originally their teams’ players, however both fought to have them on their team. And it seemed that for the second half of the game, the results would be totally up to them.

Immediately, by the 50th minute Yesui and Kara were clashing for the ball, both swiftly maneuvering around each other to prevent the other from stealing the ball back. For several minutes, this dynamic played on, neither ceding ground to the other. But then, on the 67th minute, Kara struck first, managing to get past Yesui Erkhet before dashing for the Yangini goal, and by the 72nd minute, the game was now 2-1, with Yuezhou in the lead.

Kara cheered as she ran back to Yuezhou lines, but Yesui wasnt about to give up that easy. Her bloodline has known trial all too well for that. Both she and Kara were once again fighting for the ball, for another point that would decide the outcome of the game as the match moved onto the 80th minute. A pivot, left and right, the other responded forth. It seemed as if this was how the game would end, an endless stalemate between the two.

But Yesui remembered the golden rule. “Never let your enemy predict your next move.”

And so, she suddenly kicked the ball between Kara’s leg, before leaping above her, routing her defense and allowing her to make one last attempt at the Yuezhounese goal. She didnt need to make another shot. The ball went in, scoring a last minute goal for Yangchenia on the 89th minute, sealing the game as a draw 2-2. From the distance, Kara gave Yesui a nod of approval, Yesui doing the same in return, as if both found a new sense of respect for the other.

With Yangchenia’s draw to Yuezhou, the Blazing Dragons have once again held their spot on the leaderboard. But with the qualification round almost ending, the chances of Yangchenia qualifying are slim. But only time will tell the Dragons’ ultimate fate.

Because as a wise man said, it aint over until it’s over.

bittersweet – seventeen
How did love become love?

Mia looked at her Medical Certificate. She didn’t believe it at first. What? Hanahaki? That couldn’t have been right. No, it was a fictional disease. It only existed in stories, fairytales, folklore. It was impossible for her to contract it, no. Still, she couldn’t deny the symptoms and aetiologies: chasing an unrequited love, and flowers blooming in her lungs.

How did it get to this point, though?

Mia thought about the friendship she once had with Félicien. He was nothing but good, a candy made to sweeten her otherwise tasteless life. She didn’t know what she was to him, but for a while, he was all she knew. She couldn’t count the number of times she went to his house when she was going through a rough patch, nor could she measure the length of the texts she sent him when she had to rant about something. He was always a listening ear, and maybe she took that as a sign when it wasn’t. She invested too much time and energy into him, and she wanted returns.

Mia sat back on the clinic bench, heaving a sigh. Hanahaki, hmm? That explained her breathlessness and fatigue the past few weeks, but even though she knew the cure, why did she feel hesitant to take it?
Nothing is like the heart of a person. We share the same vision but our hearts are distant, how sweet and bitter.

The locker room was a crowded place, and a smelly one at that. Everyone was tired. Pleased, but tired. The 5-2 scoreline probably provided the reason why: scoring 5 was not easy. Mia herself was drenched in sweat. The coach had decided to make her a substitute and have her come on for the last 30-ish minutes, but that half-an-hour was enough to sap out all her energy. Maybe it was that Hanahaki disease or whatever, she didn’t really know.

The coach quickly brought the room to a lull as she addressed the team. As usual, she went from the good things to the bad things. Mia got a few rounds of praises for her immediate impact; scoring 2 goals to end any lingering doubts about Vixette’s performance was a statement. Mia appreciated all the support and cheers she got, but she wasn’t really in the mood at the moment. Mia sat down facing the ground, but her eyes were focused on the guy right across her: Félicien.

Félicien didn’t look too happy. In fact, he may have been a bit down at the moment. Not even the contagion of happiness in the room infected him, and Mia might have had a few ideas why.

“Félicien,” the coach called.

“Yes,” he responded politely.

“You need to do better at the back.”

The whole room fell into an awkward silence. All eyes gradually turned to Vixette’s starting goalie who tried to hide his face to deflect the attention. Blanchefleur wrapped her arm around his and held his paw. How romantic.

“You’re making too many mistakes, especially under pressure,” the coach continued, “Nethertopia shouldn’t have been able to press you so easily, and you also shouldn’t have passed it so carelessly. I expect more from you during training.”

A subservient “yes” was all Félicien could master. Mia sat back up and looked at Félicien's direction, and as she was straightening her posture, her eyes met Félicien’s for a second, and she saw something she’d never seen in his eyes: tears.

Félicien seemed to be resiliently holding back his tears, but to the observant (like Mia), it was noticeable. His forehead was creased, and his gaze held a bout of confusion and hopelessness. The coach wasn’t wrong, he had been making many mistakes, and even though his performances were fine otherwise, it was still a warning sign. Nevertheless, did he need to get called out like that? Mia knew Félicien: he hated being called out. At that moment, Mia felt empathetic towards him.

And then he broke eye contact. Félicien closed his eyes and let out a sigh. Three seconds was about as long as they could look at each other. Mia continued to observe Félicien. His posture was poor – he was slouching, uncharacteristically of him – and the smile that would usually grace his lips was nowhere to be seen. Mia wanted to tell him that everything was alright. She wanted to comfort him, and to let him know that he was still the best goalkeeper Vixette had to offer. However, with his gaze averted from his, those words never wound up actually being said.

the truth untold – bts
A flower that resembled you grew in this garden of loneliness, and I wanted to give it to you. I took off my foolish mask, but I know that I can’t remain unmasked forever, and I must hide, because of my ugliness.

Mia was stuck on her word processor for a few minutes. Writing a thriller packaged as a romance piece was harder than she thought. She finally thought of a decentish direction to take her novel: the route of an unreliable narrator. Maybe her main character was trying to frame her lover’s girlfriend as an evil she necessarily had to get rid of. Maybe her main character was the villain the entire time, although planning to kill someone was already villainous enough. Still, Mia just didn’t know how to move on with her work. She was having another one of those creative droughts. She hated them; she liked it when ideas just flowed through her mind onto the laptop screen. To make things worse, her mind was already preoccupied with something – ahem, someone – else.

Mia got off her seat and started pacing around her hotel room. Once again, her room was next to the two lovebirds, no surprises there. However, while she had never approached them or their room, maybe tonight might be the first time. She was preparing her speech for when she would try to talk to them:

“Ahem, Félicien, I just wanted to have a really quick talk. I promise it won’t last long, and I promise I don’t have ul–”

Nah, she had to get to the point.

“Félicien, are we friends?”

Too straightforward.

Mia flopped onto her bed, paws in her head in frustration. Why couldn’t she think of anything appropriate? Was she overthinking things? Maybe she was overthinking things. It shouldn’t be this complicated. She had only one objective in mind: to ask if they were still friends. Maybe his answer would be the catalyst to her finally being able to move on. If Félicien really didn’t think of her as anything other than someone he used to know, then there was no point holding onto the hope that he still had some feelings for her. Of course, it wasn’t ever this simple. The art of moving on was more than listening to the words of someone who didn’t care about you anymore… Well, that sounded rather contrived. Whatever, Mia didn’t have time to think about whether her words made sense. She needed to get this matter done and over with.

Mia boldly stepped out of her room and made the 4-step walk to the adjacent door. Mia wasn’t purposely eavesdropping, but she could kind of make out the kind of conversation Félicien and Blanchefleur were having, and it didn’t seem to be a particularly pleasant one. Blanchefleur seemed to be whining or complaining about something if her annoyingly squeaky voice was anything to go by, whilst Félicien’s tone was much more on edge, as if he was a step away from completely losing it. This was, what, the second argument she’d heard from them, and they’d only been together for a few months. Mia wondered if the cracks in the relationship were starting to form, but she didn’t know everything…

…Oh, right. Her question. Mia realised she’d been standing in front of the door for a good minute. She looked at the door again, her brain running through all the scenarios that could happen. Maybe Félicien would be oddly receptive, and then actually say that he still saw her as a friend? Or maybe his demeanour would be as cold as the northern ice, and he’d shut her out before she had a chance to speak. Mia looked at the door one more time. Suddenly, she didn’t think it was a good idea. She could hear their argument grow more heated – she still didn’t know what it was about – and she didn’t want to add fuel to the fire. Maybe Blanchefleur was insanely jealous of her? Who knows?

Still, Mia really wanted to get the question off her chest. She raised her hand to knock on the door, but then put it back down. She turned around to head back to her room, but then turned back to the couple’s room. She let out a puff of air. What was there to worry about? It was just a question. As much as Mia tried to persuade herself that it would be okay, however, she still didn’t know if she even wanted to.

“Whatever,” Mia muttered to herself. Maybe this wasn’t the time. Maybe she should catch him when he’s alone or when he wasn’t literally arguing with his girlfriend. She walked back to her room and shut the door, locking out any possibility of her question being answered for the time being.

And so they reach these northern lands at last. The cold was missed, a familiar feeling to those on the journey.

But what of this new world they have encountered? What threats may they face? What people may be living here that they not know of?

As they sailed north, their answers were finally given. And suffice to say that their answers were not bright.

Many nations occupy these floating cities as they do, to survive what they deem as "disasters". What these things are, left unsaid.

Conflicts, agendas, among many more things exist as they did back then. This world was rife with war, for one reason or another.

Those who couldn't afford to, they live out their lives on unmoving land. Succumb to disaster or be on the move was the apparent message of this world.

All sorts of people and things they have never seen before. Magic with machinery, science with fiction, a fantasy turned real.

As they reach the northern lands they sought for, what will be their course of action? To stay in this world or leave it as it may be?

Who knows where they may end up, had they chose to leave once more. This was as grim as things get, and yet, it was habitable. This land.

And so they chose to stay, be it as harsh as it be. For they would rather face a certain challenge than to question fate once more.

When it occurred once, it had been enough. Choosing to do it twice was more than anyone could do. This new north would be their new home.

And so that was that, Atheara are no longer in contention.

Well, that was never the expectations at all, but it still hurts when you hear it whether you like it or not. And for the young ones, it hurts just a little bit more.

After Qualifiers, what road does this national team take? The Cup of Harmony still exists but... Atheara hasn't played much there historically.

Perhaps... The regionals would be next on the list. But there's no guarantee there either, well, the players think so at the very least.

Two of them were in their bedroom, preparing to get some sleep and shut-eye in preparation for the next remaining matches that The Blue Guard had.

Rianne Van Royen and Eliza Emmenstra Vertagne were those two, the former still on the desk and the latter already on her own bed.

The younger one voiced her thoughts. "I wonder what will happen once these qualifiers end." Royen spoke, writing a few notes in her diary.

"Well, maybe a few extra matches in friendlies, that's what I'm hoping for at least." Vertagne responded, scrolling on her phone. A few more matches would be nice.

"I guess so," Royen answered back, thinking. "Do you think we'll get more matches? I doubt our performances are deserving of them." She added on.

Vertagne looks at Royen, who had turned her back whilst sitting on the chair. "The only way we're getting better is if we're playing more. It's yes if the higher ups aren't idiots."

Royen has a thoughtful expression on her face. "You're right, I guess. I just hope they aren't actually idiots." She remarked.

"They're not if they could revive a country from the brink." Vertagne responded, Royen smiling in acceptance. "Let's just get some shut-eye. That should clear your mind."

"Alright," Royen spoke. "But I'll finish up my notes first." The younger player added, returning back to focusing on her diary.

Surely, Vertagne had to be right. This won't be a one-off appearance, The Blue Guard have to be back for good.

Jack had managed to get his head back in the game after the loss against Nova Dackians. The media circus only lasted around a week or so before everyone turned their eyes back towards more pressing issues, such as the looming national budget, foreign policy and a whole host of other political concerns. Football was the nation’s most popular sport, sure, but Warkusians on the whole don’t care much about sport in the first place. ‘I have no interest in your pedestrian sportsball’ is might honestly be more popular than all the sports combined.

His time hanging out with Eirian started to follow a specific pattern: he rants about the stresses of managing the national team and she rants about the stresses of the Dove Guardianship – the highly-constrained foreign policy role of the Warkusian monarch – not to mention the stresses of being such a prominent public and political figure. But the team’s impressive 3-3 draw away to top seeds HUElavia took a huge weight off Jack’s shoulders, at least temporarily. The players put up a serious fight that game, knowing that the draw just barely kept their distant qualification hopes alive. Llewelyn and Siôr picked up goals, reminding everyone of what they were capable of, while James picked up a goal from a header too. The team hadn’t fallen apart at all.

They probably weren’t going to qualify, admittedly, given their next game is against Indusse who’ve gone undefeated so far and already beat Warkus 3-nil, but the rest of their remaining games are ones you’d expect them to win or at least pick up a draw in. Germanic Cat suddenly looked less impressive, now sitting down in sixth place – no one can really remember why they were considered such a threat in the first place. But that’s not to say they should be taken lightly, given we’ve already seen Warkus lose to Nova Dackians at home.

In contrast, Bruinswik had started to look like a bigger threat. A loss against them would take away the three point lead that Warkus has over them in the group standings. Knights of LUSITANIA shouldn’t be underestimated either, especially after their 1-nil win over Bruinswik. On paper though, Jack’s players should be able to pick up nine points from their remaining four games.

Eirian, meanwhile, finally managed to have her working hours temporarily reduced by the Senedd. She was, for now, no longer required to attend low priority meetings and events. Significant foreign policy and intelligence briefings only. The government had already made it clear that they were turning a blind eye to whatever it is that’s going on in Krytenia. They’d probably bump up foreign aid funding in the budget and forget about it.

The vibes were good. The players were getting along well and training hard. Jack and Eirian actually had time to relax and started getting to know each other as people. People with personalities and interests beyond the stressful and exhausting jobs that they were so passionate about.

"Well it seems pretty clear"

"Yeah this group has been chalk"

"Pretty chalk"

"Like the nice type you see on the sidewalk"

"Or maybe the good stuff you see when somebody is making a fun drawing that they know will be permanent"

"Yeah that's the stuff"

"Either way we know the end result"

"Second place"

"Second place"

"Which means playoff insanity"

"And failure"

"And failure"

"The only good news is that we did well in the group stage which is nice"

"That is nice, should help with the coefficient mayonnaise"

"What's coefficient mayonnaise?"

"It's a concept devised in Ko-oren that says that any good result that helps the rank of a country, in general, is good because of how ranking points work even if, in general, the performance is disappointing because on the broader level, the higher the coefficient the better the results will be overtime. It's generally applied to club soccer since, in international competitions, multiple clubs from the same country can compete but, based on country ranks, some countries will get more clubs than others in the competition. Therefore, if any team does well in the competition that will help the overall country's coefficient which is good"

"Ok but how does that apply to us as an international team?"

"Simple, we're a tier 3 team and any advantage we can use to increase our rank is a good one. So an easy group where we win a lot of games, finish 2nd, and don't qualify for the World Cup is still good for us overall."

"Ah, so the fact that we're not good but are steamrolling an even worse group is the key here"

"Precisely"

"Are we going to continue to use and abuse this concept?"

"Certainly possible"

"How likely is it?"

"7/10"

"Great"

"Do playoffs count towards this?"

"No"

"Well that sucks"

"It does but we'll see, we've been good so far so maybe we can get lucky"

"It's not going to ho happen"

"We got like 2 games left and we'll be through, unlikely to do anything more but at least we can see and hope for the best"

"Essentially"

"Come on You Warriors!"

World Cup 100 - Article
The World Cup 100 qualifying stage is slowly nearing its end with only four match days still to play. With Valentine Z’s qualification through first place virtually certain, all eyes in Group 20 are now on 2nd place where three teams are still eligible to reach the ticket to the playoffs:

Currently occupying the runner-up spot is Choppyhausen – World Cup debutantes and runner-ups of the most recent Baptism of Fire who have surprised spectators with a strong performance in the first half of the qualifying stage, beating both Valentine Z and TJUN-ia in the process. With 27 points the Team in Teal currently sits six points in front of their chasers from Sangti and the Filindo Isles however both of their contenders have a game in hand on them.

The Agilang Dilaw from Sangti and the Filindo Isles are next in line. Their strength in this tournament mostly comes from their strong defense: Goalkeeper Labawig only had to pick the ball out of the net twelve times in the twelve games the team has already played – clearly the best record in the group. However, Manager Frain’s team has so far struggled to capitalize on its strengths against its closest rivals. Two draws and two losses from the matches against the other Top 4 teams might cost them the qualification.

On fourth place and with 19 points already far away from the direct qualification spot are TJUN-ia. Most would have predicted the Jaguars on first place at this point of qualifying but instead they have put up a rather disappointing performance – at least by their standards. Especially on foreign turf, the Jaguars repeatedly had problems to live up to expectations, losing in Surne, Choppyhausen, New Arbuckle and Colmaijo.

But while things might look bleak for TJUN-ia in the current standings, there is still a lot of movement possible as several direct match ups between the contenders are coming in the next games. Two wins in the next two games against the Yellow Eagles and the Jaguars would bring Choppyhausen very close to the playoffs but two losses and their lead would be more than gone. So, strap in and enjoy the tension, the goals and the excitement the next games will bring!

Surne had already proven themselves to be an obstacle for stronger teams with a surprising victory against TJUN-ia on Matchday 2 and they would continue this in Choppyhausen where the Team in Teal dropped two important points in the race for qualification. While Corte brought his team in front with a neat header in the 27th minute, this lead would not last long enough as Surne fought for the equalizer and managed to score midway through the second half. Even though the simultaneous 0-0 between TJUN-ia and Sangti and the Filindo Isles was the best possible outcome for Choppyhausen, Manager Merrit did not look happy after the game.

The first match up between these two teams back on MD5 ended with 2-1 for Choppyhausen. Now both teams doubled their goals to end up with with a 4-2. The first half was fairly even, both teams got their fair share of shots on goal with the offenses on both sides being way more active than the defenses. 2-2 was the score at half-time with Lukeson scoring both goals for Choppyhausen. After the break the Team in Teal became more dominant, forcing Colmaijo into their own penalty area for most of the second half. It took quite a while until Colmaijo’s defense broke under the pressure but Iduna and Holdenbeck managed to score and secure the win for their team.

ALPHANIAN SOCCER TEAM STORMS INTO ABANHFLEFT AND ATYMNIUS by Oofio

I never thought I would be writing these articles, but here I am (next matchday is a bye so blah blah blah I typity type type type). Anyway, looks like our recent opponents just ghosted the world (halloween was a week ago, guys c'mon), so I have to provide summaries now. Yay me!

United States of Alpha 3, Abanhfleft 1

So the game started out like really boring. Finally, we scored when ABaconHair got a fast break in the 28th minute, and then gave it to NotJustBry4, who blasted it past the net of number 39 (they dont have numbers so I make them up as i go). The game ramped up in the second half. We scored (or lazarpay2win scored) in the 65th minute with an awesome curve. To say that their goalie got dizzy would be an understatement. Number 49 scored in the 76th minute, but the damage had been done. In the 90+1st minute, I got a chip shot over the goalie's head as an icing-on-the-cake nail-in-the-coffin (too bad if you can't keep up with the hyphens).

United States of Alpha 5, Atymnius 3

This was a very high-scoring game, so no descriptions, just scores. (i have to look up the other team's roster bruh)
ABaconHair 9'
TheOtherNoobus 23'
Rafail Paleas 27'
Theodosis Alanoglou 38'
2nd half
Oofio 48'
Aris Tý 53'
NotJustBry4 71'
ABaconHair 85'

anyways, those are the summaries of our two most recent games. I hope I did well reporting the summaries!

The Fate of the Alphanian Soccer Team By JustBry4:) (your leader, again)

In order to determine our fate, here's the Group 9 standings:
Rk Nation Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Chromatika 13 11 0 2 46 20 +26 33 Z
2 The Ko-orenite Constellation 12 6 5 1 25 12 +13 23
3 Dantopia 13 7 2 4 24 19 +5 23 X
4 United States Of Alpha 13 5 3 5 25 24 +1 18 X
5 Atymnius 12 4 3 5 28 26 +2 15 X
6 Abanhfleft 12 4 2 6 19 20 −1 14 X
7 Archalit 12 2 5 5 15 26 −11 11 X
8 Whispinia 13 3 2 8 15 37 −22 11 E
9 Karmosora 12 2 2 8 13 26 −13 8 E

Key:
Z - at least play-in spot
_ - future still uncertain, could place first, second, or get eliminated
X - cannot get first, still mathematically possible to reach play-in
E - eliminated from World Cup 100 altogether, playing just for pride

since Whispinia and Karmosora have been eliminated, here's the refined standings:
Rk Nation Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Chromatika 13 11 0 2 46 20 +26 33 Z
2 The Ko-orenite Constellation 12 6 5 1 25 12 +13 23
3 Dantopia 13 7 2 4 24 19 +5 23 X
4 United States Of Alpha 13 5 3 5 25 24 +1 18 X
5 Atymnius 12 4 3 5 28 26 +2 15 X
6 Abanhfleft 12 4 2 6 19 20 −1 14 X
7 Archalit 12 2 5 5 15 26 −11 11 X

Dantopia is in 3rd place due to losing the head-to-head against the "Ko-oren OOC puppet" according to the guy behind Ko-oren.
The rest of us (Atymnius, Abanhfleft, Archalit, and us of course) pretty much need to win out in order to make the playoffs. Fortunately, our next two games are against Whispinia and Karmosora in that order, who are 8th and 9th in our group, respectively. Therefore, our only concern is The Ko-orenite Constellation, which will probably the most important match of the team's existence.

And even IF we win out, we might STILL get eliminated. All the Ko-orenites or Dantopians have to do is win most of their remaining games and we'll be eliminated regardless of how well we do. It won't be easy for them however, as the middle of the pack is filled with some tough teams (we experienced that firsthand when we battled them).

Meanwhile, Whispinia is still of cocern as they managed to defeat some middle-teams like Archalit and Atymnius. Our number 1 improvement needs to be against Karmosora, with our 1-2 loss to them definitely saying that we need to improve our game and keep complacence at a minimum. Only them will our final match against Ko-orenite Constellation be worth it, regardless of the result.

But hey man, it's just a game, and the number one goal is to HAVE FUN.

Good luck once again to our fellow Oofers against those two teams, and special shoutout to Oofio for reporting on our two most recent games! United States of Alpha's sports fans are counting on you!
I camp in shooter games. That's how awful of a person I am.

OF FATES AND FORTUNES
Chapter Forty-Two - Origins

In a quiet great hall an old man walked slowly through, his hands feeling along the tables and chairs, for stability but also with a sense of fondness and re-acquaintance as a wistful smile crept across his face. This home had long since been used, the fires long since extinguished and the old man felt the cold start to dig its frosty claws deep into him and headed to the fireplace. The place, though long since used, still had a stack of dry firewood ready next to the hearth and with more strength than you would think a man of his advanced years could manage, piled the wood high and with a small motion got the fire roaring. He fell into the chair nearest the fire and let the crackling flames warm his tired bones.

As the old man sat there he found his mind wandering, sinking into childhood memories of this place, happy times free of the burdens that life would place on him, simpler times, innocent times. He was dragged out of the trip down memory lane by a loud knocking at the door. The old man made another small motion, and the door opened to reveal a bespectacled young man, carrying a satchel and looking rather bedraggled after a long journey. The young man had a puzzled expression on his face at the door opening by itself, but rationalised it in his mind that he must simply have knocked harder than he thought.

”Come join me by the fire young man, I suspect it’s not just my old bones chilled by the cold, and if it is just my old bones then please humor me by joining me nonetheless”

The young man remained frozen at the door for a moment, he had heard that voice once before and knew who he was in the presence of; The Great Uniter. The legend in the flesh, the man that had brought the world under his yoke only to break all yokes. It had been years since he’d transferred power, and then stepped down as chair of the bureaucracy. He’d completely stepped out of the public eye, but he knew that voice in his core. When he’d heard it all those many years ago it had inspired him, made him join up and be part of it all. He took some tentatively forward, wracking his brain as to how to properly address the great man, was it your eminence? Oh Great Uniter? He was a Lord when all this started. Would it still be that old term now he stepped back, your lordship? He’d reached the hearth and was still cycling through options and paused, he must have had his concern and apprehension all over his face as the Uniter spoke first.

”Please call me Robert”, he put forward his hand encouraging the young man to take a seat ”And who’s company do I have the pleasure of this fine if cold evening?”

”Uh it’s Clarke sir”, the young man replied nervously and hurriedly took his seat.

”A pleasure to make your acquaintance Clarke, but please there is not need for the honorific, you and I sit here as equals, and if we were to still ascribe to the old nation of stations, you would sit above me now an upstanding man in a department and me and old man happily in retirement.” He paused waiting for Clarke to nod in understanding “As you know you were asked here to help me in compiling a book, a chronicle of the creation of Tanirinth.” He paused again ”An interesting name Clarke, and a prescient one for our affairs tonight. You of course know the meaning of your name, a clerk or scribe. But did you know that it comes from the old word clerec meaning cleric or priest. Which will come in useful for our endeavour, and this will involve confession. The story that is told, the one you have probably learned and told others of, is at best only the partial truth, and there remains only myself who knows the full story and I do not want that knowledge to die with me. There will come a time in the future where to save Tanirinth from the mistakes I have made they will need to know the truth. Warts and all, my triumphs and my failures.”

The great hall hung in silence as Clarke for the first time properly looked at the Uniter, trying to see he was now simply an old man who had lost his marbles, or a man truly haunted by secrets. Was everything he believed in built on lies?

“Ah excellent” said the Uniter “Not simply a follower then, someone who can challenge my words and therefore know for a fact they are true after I pass it. And I’ve the perfect first challenge for you. Magic is real.”

The following is an excerpt from a series of articles published by leading Katzeburgian gaming magazine Starter Life.

Those who have been following along with our series on Lands of Eternia and the beta players who made this game what it was to so many people may remember the article we did a few weeks ago on Birdy_Early and Pagerboy - the couple who found each other in the dark, post-Katzeburgian Revolution world, through the game and fell in love. The two would marry in September AK2, both in real-life and on Eternia Island and would enter a life of bliss, having been pulled together as a result of a game which sought to do that to so many more people. Since that article, we've had lots of readers write in asking us why we never interviewed Rob Page, the player behind the Pagerboy alias, during that article. There is a very good reason for that, and it's mostly down to the fact that Pagerboy himself would become another iconic part of the lore of Lands of Eternia - although not for the reason many would ultimately want to be known for.

When Pagerboy and Birdy_Early (real name Jennifer Thomas) married in late AK2, many thought their joining would bring about years of happiness and love - the two, after all, had found each other on Eternia Island, and they have braved the changing Katzeburgian backdrop to ultimately be together. So it was a brutal snap back to reality when just two months after being wedded, Rob would take a call from his doctor which would change everything for the couple.

"I remember his face dropping almost immediately," Jennifer told us. "He just nodded every few moments while listening to the call, and then thanked the doctor and hung up. I asked him what had happened? And... Sorry - it's still a lot to talk about all these years later. I asked him what happened, and he just said, 'I've got cancer'."

Rob was diagnosed with a high-stage level of lung cancer, seemingly out of nowhere, and with now incredibly short odds of making it through in the longer-run. "He had a bit of a cough for the first couple of months we were married," Jennifer said. "But we always put it down to the fact it was getting colder and his immune system wasn't the strongest." Not one to give into a fight easily, Rob would rally over the next couple of months in an attempt to downplay as much of the cancer's spread as possible. Unfortunately, it had been caught past the window of best treatment for cancer in Katzeburg at that time, meaning Rob's condition would quickly deteriorate.

But despite his worsening condition, Rob would still find time for his two greatest loves - Jennifer, and Lands of Eternia. "Eternia Island was a home away from home for Rob for a lot of his life up to that point," Jennifer said. "Once the diagnosis came in, he kind of retreated there a little bit, but the weight of what was coming his direction did start to weigh on him." Pagerboy was now driven by a desire to see as much of the game as he could in his final months, working rapidly to clean through quest lines and leave his mark on the game world. He had already done so by getting married, but with mortality becoming a larger note in his day-to-day life, he was now driven with a desire to make his virtual life one also complete.

Over the first few months of AK3, Pagerboy, Jennifer, and the other members of the Eternia Leisure Party (ELP) guild worked to help him through the final storylines of the game up to that point, and even reaching to the developers, Mercer Software, to see if he could get any early access to the looming expansion - Edin Abyss. "The developers went one better, and they really didn't need to do any of that," Jennifer told us, handing over a picture of Pagerboy at the studios of Mercer Software in AK3. "He was invited on the barins of the developers to visit the studio and ask anything he ever wanted to know about Lands of Eternia. I remember he pointed to that day as one of the most enjoyable in his entire life - he was like a kid in the world's nerdiest candy store."

By mid-AK3, the cancer had continued to spread and Rob was left home-bound, needing to take longer and longer rest periods. Whenever he was awake and had the sufficient energy - he would be on Lands of Eternia, playing alongside his wife and friends or just spending time walking around the ELP guildhouse and surrounding areas, taking the wider lands in and reminiscing about his days in-game. "He was always present in the relationship in real life, but the game was where he felt safe - felt like he was able to live even when in reality he could barely move because of the pain he was suffering," Jennifer said. "I think that's a thing which a lot of people don't like to think about when it comes to games on a wider scale - they allow everyone to feel normal or in control, even if just for a moment or two."

Rob would eventually pass from the cancer, which had spread to his brain in the final days - dying a year to the day from his and Jennifer's virtual wedding on Eternia Island on September 23, AK3.

The news would quickly spread to the members of the ELP guild, who shut down all activities in-game for a week in memorial of Rob, with a small notice being shared to the Eternia Times at first, just to let the paper know the reason why a break was being undertaken. "I didn't think of the idea for an in-game funeral, it was something which was suggested off-hand by another guild member," Jennifer said. "It made perfect sense - we had what we viewed as our real wedding in game, why not have the other end of that in-game too? It was the perfect way to honour him and give his friends a real chance to say goodbye in way they may not have been able to."

A few days after Rob's passing, a small crowd of 20 players from across the ELP guild and other players who had their own lives touched by Rob in some way gathered on the shores of the Athian River, where Rob and Jennifer had been wedded just over 12 months earlier. This time though, the ELP guild had prepared a small boat with in-game tributes and items recognising and referencing Pagerboy and his mark on the world (including the in-game rare wedding ring gifted by the developers) which they set off down the river following a minute's silence in-game between those in attendance. Mercer Software was also aware of the funeral itself, and agreed to 'sink' the boat in the in-game tradition of an Eternian funeral, giving Pagerboy the highest honour only reserved in game lore for Kaisers and literal gods. As the ship went down, it was seen off with a salute from all in attendance, typing 'for Pagerboy' into chat as they saw off their friend into the cosmos for one last time. The in-game funeral became major news after the event, with a recording of it shared with the permission of Jennifer to the wider community. The tributes for Rob would continue to flow in for months after his passing, with a small statue dedicated to him in the plaza of Eternia Castle for those who wish to track down his memory in-game.

"I remember it was the front page news of the Eternia Times," Jennifer said. "Rob always kept telling me he wanted to do something to get on the front page of that paper - well, he finally did do something to get there; it just probably wasn't the way he was thinking."

Life would eventually move on in the game of Lands of Eternia, but for Jennifer, the passing of her husband and the send off received was all too much to bear for her, and she would eventually stop playing the game a few months after Rob's passing.

"It was all a bit too much for me," she said in tears. "I just couldn't bare to face that game for much longer once he was gone, it felt like a huge part of that game had been ripped out for me as well. That being said, there's a real sense of comfort to me with the knowledge that on Eternia Island, Pagerboy still lives; He's just never come back onto the server. He logged out one night and that was that - his virtual life is still out there somewhere in the void of the game itself."

Unfortunately, the technology does not yet exist for us to reach into the cosmos and talk to Rob about all things Lands of Eternia and his relationship with Jennifer - instead, all we have is the following, a letter addressed to his wife written in the final weeks before he passed on. We're eternally grateful to Jennifer for letting us share some of Rob's final words.

Jennifer,

There's no way I can summarise all the emotions and things I want to say to you in this letter and if you are actually reading this, you'll know that I'm no longer among the living with you (or, you've sneaked a peek at my desk drawers, in which case - hey!).

Every moment with you has been perfect, and I wouldn't trade it for anything; not for this cancer to be ripped out of me and magically make me better, and sure as hell not for all the gold pieces on Eternia Island.

It wasn't just the life we shared in reality that made me love you, it was our joined connection - all those hours spent hanging around the guildhouse or doing simple quests just to spend time with each other - it's not the massive moments and milestones which have stuck in my mind, it's the smallest of touches - you resting your hand on mine as we prepared for a large-scale raid, the simple nudge you gave me when meeting your parents for the first time to downplay to some extent our time spent on Eternia Island.

These aren't just simple memories plucked from a list which were among the many reasons that I love you - they were the cornerstones which built a perfect and unforgettable life because you were at the heart of each and every moment of them.

I know what will follow won't be easy, and I'm sorry that I won't be there to face it with you. But please know this; to me you are perfect, and the greatest gift you can ever give me is a life lived to the fullest. You gave me a pair of lives worth living, and finding you in this great big world through something so inherently silly as a game is the needle in a haystack moment which made me the luckiest person in the entire world.

I will love you to Eternia and beyond, and I'll wait for you there, no matter how long it takes.

Yours forever and ever, Your Pagerboy.

'We're our own worst enemy': Blue Cats on the brink after Kaumann defeat

By Otis Huffman, KBC

Katzeburg are staring down the prospect of a second straight narrow miss of making the World Cup, after the Blue Cats shot themselves in the foot following a 2-1 defeat away to Kaumann.

The side previously pulled off the shock result of the Group 21 qualifiers at Katzestadt Arena in the earlier game of the window, sending three past Pasarga to claim all three points and hand the World Number 15 side their first defeat of the qualifying campaign. The back and forth clash saw the Pasargans take an early lead through Járngrímur Náttúlfsson before Lloyd Field and Meriel Arkwright fired the Blue Cats back in front with goals either side of the half-time break. Bogdan Laszlo would restore parity for the visitors in the 72nd minute with a curling effort on the edge of the box, but the result and all three points would swing back towards Katzeburg late in the game, with substitute Jana Linton bundling home a corner in the 86th minute to hand Katzeburg a famous victory and a crucial three points in the qualification campaign.

The momentum which the win provided the Blue Cats may have been enough to see them sneak through compared with a fast-finishing Natkr, but the momentum would immediately come to a grinding halt in the next match, with the side failing to find any points away to Kaumann. Genggong Effendi did the damage for Kaumann, netting twice in the opening half-hour to put the hosts comfortably ahead. While substitute Brigitte Ball would find the back of the net to provide a grandstand finish as Katzeburg pushed for an equaliser, none would come - leaving the Blue Cats in a now perilous position as the group heads into the penultimate matchday window.

Katzeburg sit in third on 25 points, a point behind second-placed Natkr and six points off the automatic qualification spot held by group leaders Pasarga. All eyes will turn to the playoff position as the best realistic finish for the Blue Cats, but time is not on their side, with Katzeburg having played an extra game compared to their top four challengers. The only benefit of the Katzeburgian run-in is the fact that they will end their qualifying campaign with two home games and the knowledge that all three of their remaining opponents occupy three of the bottom four spots in the group.

"It's incredibly frustrating to have followed up our best performance of the qualifiers and our best result with that win over Pasarga with this sloppy showing away," manager Becka Haberkorn told media after the 2-1 loss to Kaumann. "We're our own worst enemy to a degree this cycle; we've shown a tendency to play at the levels dictated by our opposition rather than leading the conversation. We've not been positive enough when outside of Katzeburg and it's really come back to bite us hard here. It's a huge ask now for us to do what is required to take that second spot; the advantage is entirely the way of Natkr and despite the fact we've got an eaiser run-in than our competitors, we need to be taking full advantage of it and at the moment we're not doing enough to show why we deserve to be in that playoff spot."

Katzeburg next takes on Manuelian Empire at Anchor Field, the home of the national team's biggest win to date in a 10-0 thumping of Europeasia only a couple of weeks prior before they head into the Bye. While the Blue Cats struggled away to the Empire earlier in the campaign - leaving with a 1-1 draw - they know that anything less than a win will not be good enough to keep their rapidly slimming hopes of a playoff appearance alive.

The first days in the interim CEO chair for Brady Reynolds were a whirlwind of questions.

Does he make sweeping changes, knowing full well that those changes could be further revised by the next person without the interim tag in front of their name? Does he address rumours that manager Caleb Rush was looking to make an exit again, just after he'd been talked into returning following the ouster of former Incorporated Football Federation chairman Zack Wilson? Does he seek to remove the interim tag himself and take on the full-time role running the entirety of Sarzonian football, not long after he'd last donned the Sarzonia hit himself?

"I think it's best we use the next few weeks to get our bearings and assess things before we make any further changes," Reynolds said during his introductory press conference. "I don't want to make any commitments and force the hand of the next person at this dais if it's not me," he added. "We've already had enough upheaval, which is why I'm standing here in the first place."

He was aware that Rush scheduled a meeting with him toward the end of World Cup qualifying, and he was well aware of the rumours of what Rush's decision would be. He was prepared with lists of reasons to counter whatever decision it was, be it the more likely decision by Rush to step down again and return to life away from football, and the unlikely prospect that Rush would want to go out on a high note and guide the Stars back to the World Cup finals. He'd decided himself that Rush was the right person for the job if he wanted it, but with the whole row surrounding The Mole and the aftermath, he wouldn't blame Rush if he'd decided enough was enough.

He was so immersed in his to-do list that he almost didn't hear the office phone ring. After the third ring, he became aware that someone was calling him. He looked at the caller ID. Woodstock Daily Mail, he saw. He rolled his eyes.

"Nothing's changed," Reynolds snapped after he'd picked up the receiver on his desk. "I've made no decisions about the future of this football programme and probably won't until the end of qualifying."

"That's not what I'm calling about," the voice on the other end of the phone said before Reynolds could angrily slam the phone onto the receiver to hang it up. Reynolds stopped short. It was Travis West, the veteran reporter who'd earned the respect of literally everyone who'd occupied the centre seat of every national team and every CEO's desk. But he played back the words West said. If the state of Sarzonian football wasn't what he was calling about, then what exactly was he calling about?

"I'm sorry, Travis," Reynolds said. "If you're not calling about my status or Caleb's. what are you calling about?"

"DId you see the news out of Jeruselem?"

"What news?" Reynolds said. Jeruselem. That was a name steeped in World Cup history. It was a name familiar to Sarzonia in the very early days of Sarzonian football before the first Isolation, long before the Great Isolation, long long before the Third Isolation.

"You hadn't heard? They've been expelled from the World Cup."

"Expelled? What for?"

"You should have the release from the World Cup Committee on your desk." Reynolds looked to his left. He didn't see anything there. He looked directly in front of him. Nothing there. Then he saw an envelope on his right..He opened it and began reading. His eyes widened for a moment as he read.

"They what?" Reynolds said. "This is, wow, this is both shocking and not at the same time." Reynolds was well aware of the reputation Jeruselem had throughout the footballing world, the lines they usually skirted or neared, but seemingly never actually crossed. This time, they did cross those lines and the World Cup Committee finally had enough.

Reynolds read further. Their rank was stripped, and they were now expelled. Further matches they were scheduled for would end in 3-0 forfeit results.

"I don't know if the punishment is unprecedented, but this is pretty dang serious," Reynolds said. Realising West was waiting for comment, Reynolds said, "The Incorporated Football Federation recognises the extreme nature of the actions undertaken by Jeruselem resulting in their expulsion from this edition of the World Cup. We hope that any future participation from them does not involve their crossing the codes of conduct they so blatantly violated here."

After Reynolds and West disconnected from the phone call, Reynolds read the detailed list of violations again and shook his head, wondering how those who preceded him would've reacted to this news. He wouldn't have to wait long for the reaction of Sarzonia manager Caleb West, as that was the next caller on the ID. And, instead of it being West making the decision about his managerial future, it was this situation West wanted to discuss.

Sure, West wouldn't comment on record because Jeruselem weren't in Sarzonia's group, but off record? West would have a lot of things to say, and none of them were gentle.
