“They told me to do some commentary about current events, like in spite of Virtue and the Muse, our Nemesis - that pesky Strayaroos - will have her dues,” said Sigismund Schiltze and adjusted his feathered green felt cap, “but how can you say something about today and tomorrow without firstly discoursing protractedly on the many yesterdays of time gone by,” he continued and took a long swig from his stein while surveying the stands on the old Baden-Baden-Baden Park Stadia in the eastern Heilige Birgitta Quarter. “So while you might expect a small treatise on Emerson and Emus, I instead invite you to sit down and brace yourself for the beginning of the ending of How The Horkenheimers Ended Up Here.” Herr Schiltze devoured his last bite of a particularly tarty Zitronen-Tarte and smacked his lips in contentment, before continuing: “Call me old fashioned, but when it rains, it pours, and so I suggest we now soldier on and look at Part 13, wherein we witness the birth of The Horkenheimers and their first attempt at adapting to international standards.”

”The decision to establish a national FußBall team and have them compete in the 21st Independent Associations Championship was sudden and produced a most unusual situation within the operational tiers of the SFV, namely a shortage of time. The tournament was to take place somewhere far away in something called Tanirinthia, and only a month or two after the order came down from the top. It quickly became apparent that the making of haste was a necessity, and since the establishing and administering of a national FußBall team did not fit neatly into the existing organizational chart, a new impromptu unit (called Internationales Endeavors, or IE for short) was therefore hastily strung together.

Our old acquaintance Walter Freudlingen was among those commandeered to man the new unit, along with the likes of Jürgen Dammholt from the Abteilung for Rules und Regulations, Willy Brandenburger from the Statistikamt and Angela Mortelz from the Department of Ligaangelegenheiten. They quickly set out to do further research, and immediately encountered challenges.

Dammholt and Freudlingen had been tasked with examining potential IAC peculiarities and soon learned that the game they called Football out there beyond the great mountains significantly differed from what they called FußBall at home beneath the great mountains. The games were no doubt kindred and had many overlapping aspects, but some of the differences were striking.

Firstly, they only had 11 players per team as opposed to the standard 12, and their warning system was less granular and only consisted of a yellow card (a warning) and a red card (leave the pitch!). While the yellow card seemingly did cover many different types of offenses, it was obviously used more leniently and the recipient was not forced to take any sort of timeout, although getting two yellow cards did equal a red one, which was similar to the Seebergundian brown card for repeating FußBall offenders. The ratio of open-play to the referee’s whistle blowing was staggering in favor of the former, and it seemed like the game of Football was primarily played continuously in a flowing session with short breaks of play, as opposed to FußBall’s short and strategically executed bursts of play between extended referee-induced breaks for rule violations. Football games were also to be played in the format of 2x45 minutes, and there was a 15 minute break, which seemed excessive. Above all and most importantly, by all indications it seemed Football was a far more intense, fast-paced and physical game than Seebergundian FußBall.

Someone remarked that this foreign version somewhat resembled descriptions of how FußBall was played in the pre-Wingholter era, and it was decided to seek the aid of Professor Baltazar Oxmaan of Universität Kripkenstein, who was a known historian of athletics with a special interest in the history of FußBall (it was professor Oxmaan that would subsequently define the era, and coin the phrase, of the Vergoldete Age of Seebergundian FußBall). Professor Oxmaan was fairly well-acquainted with Beyond-The-Berge-Football after having interviewed stray foreigners loitering in the Puddingkuchen-Quadrat, and he played a pivotal role in providing required insight and educating the SFV functionaries. The international version of the game was indeed more similar to the older version of FußBall, but there were still considerable differences that IE and the SFV quickly had to get acquainted with, and this also influenced their work with putting together a team.

It was Brandenburger and Mortelz, with their knowledge of the Brinterberger Liga and FußBall statistics, who were in charge of initially assessing possible players. Due to Football’s rapid and physical nature, they sought to map players with sufficient speed and strength. A vital part of this story, however, is that FußBall had been going through a steady decline over the years. Not so much in terms of popularity, which had consequently and reliably been low, but rather in the lacking regrowth of the capital associations.

Several of the old clubs had in practice gone defunct, due to a lack of members willing to administer the activities, and as a consequence the SFV had forced a series of mergers. Old southern clubs BSV Gneis, Felina FußBall and Knackwurst FußBall had been merged into one, named FußBall Club Felina, whereas the western contingent of clubs - Ballclub am Fluss, VfB St. Paulina and BSV Allmannsdorf - had become Ballspielverein St. Paulina, and the northern and eastern clubs - Münsterheim FBV, Dinkelbrot Fußball, BSV Oxwaldstadt, Baden-Baden-Baden FBV and VfB Hügelheim - had all been merged into a big association called Verein für Bewegungsspiele Brinterberg. Staad FBV, BSV Mordorheim and SV Brinterberg were still functional in their original form, but were a long way from their heydays in terms of quality. In general, few youngsters kept on playing beyond the traditional young adolescent years and even though the big association mergers had organizationally concentrated activities and recruitment, it was still the case that several of them at times struggled to field full teams for Liga and Cup games.

So, one problem was that the available player pool for a national team was very much limited, whereas another one was that the way FußBall was played produced players capable of short stints of actions but severely lacking in stamina. Despite these challenges, Brandenburger and Mortelz conducted a thorough assessment of all active capital club players and ended up with a list of 30 or so names. Spontaneously, one would perhaps have expected their «roster» to be dominated by players from Staad, Mordorheim and SV Brinterberg, both because it traditionally would have been prudent to award the honor of representing The Gemeinschaft to players from clubs closely connected with Seebergundian Society, but also because they were undoubtedly the most prominent and choicest FußBall teams in all the land. However, catering to the sensitivities of the old families from the heart of fair Brinterberg was less of a priority now than it had been, and Brandenburger and Mortelz weren’t necessarily after the best FußBall players, but rather players who could plausibly perform well in a game of Football. A group of twenty players - fairly evenly spread out between the remaining capital FußBall associations - were appointed, and the IE contracted Ludvig Adorno to act as their coach. Adorno had previously coached the youth section in Dinkelbrot FußBall, before the club died and was merged into the new VfB Brinterberg, and was seen as a suitably pragmatic traditionalist.

It was Dammholt who suggested the new team be nicknamed The Horkenheimers - a tribute to the great mountains - as a way of fostering a sense of fraternal cohesion amongst the players, and this was universally supported within the SFV. Adorno and his Horkenheimers spent two weeks «learning» to play Football, under the advice of Professor Oxmaan, and then - in a most un-Seebergundian fashion - they travelled abroad. Their experiences in going abroad and encountering that strange world beyond the mountains for the first time is really worthy of being its own story, but let’s not dwell on the finer details and suffice to say The Horkenheimers struggled greatly in adapting to Football and did not fare well against teams like Crpostran and Delte. Das Alte 3-5-3 (which had been modified to a 3-5-2, but retained its name due to historical significance) proved utterly unsuited in going up against such leviathans of international Football.

And that could've easily been the end to the story of The Horkenheimers and The Gemeinschaft competing internationally, because no one enjoys being humiliated like that. However, in their third and final matchday of the 21st IAC, The Horkenheimers came up against an opponent even less talented in the ways of Football, and the hastily assembled Seebergundian team somehow managed to smash The Spartan Dominion with 3 goals to nil. Thereby they managed to secure a future for themselves, but also pave the way for a transformation of Seebergundian FußBall.”

Sernet majestically beats Yangchenia for the second time! In one of the most dramatic nights of Sernet’s campaign, the national team secured a 2–1 away victory over the dragons - a result that not only completes a double but also cements our growing reputation as the tournament’s most unpredictable success story.

This wasn’t a routine win. It was a test of nerve, resilience, and sheer audacity - capped by an unforgettable moment from an unlikely hero.

The match began at a ferocious tempo, with Yangchenia eager to avenge their earlier defeat. But Sernet, organized and assured, struck first. At the 23rd minute, Sporius Bolsting once again found the net, ghosting between defenders to meet Banis Kolbense’s cross and finish clinically at the near post. It was classic Bolsting - precise movement, calm execution, and his third goal of the campaign reaffirmed his role as Sernet’s talisman. However, Sernet was entering deep water...

...Yangchenia, roared on by their home crowd, fought back hard. Their pressure paid off midway through the second half when Yangchenian forward Tubek Orlov capitalized on a rare lapse in the Sernetian defence to level the score at 1–1 at the 47th (45+2) minute. For a moment, it seemed momentum had shifted. Pasarowski was disappointed.

But where past Sernet sides might have retreated, this one stood firm. Stoberus Pond urged his team forward from the touchline, demanding composure and courage. Sernet pressed on after half time, with many players producing excellent attempts, Zenobiusz Kusek, Poltus Esingfort, Banis Kolbense and Stefan Jatrowski, to name a few. Sernet wasn't giving up. And at the 82nd minute, that faith was rewarded in the most astonishing way imaginable.

Pasarowski’s Miracle Moment. A late corner for Sernet - their final big chance. Goalkeeper Tomasz Pasarowski jogged upfield, a gamble that drew laughter from the stands and disbelief from commentators. But when Jatrowski swung in the delivery, it was Pasarowski who rose above the crowd, powering a header past the Yangchenian keeper.

For a moment, time froze - then erupted into chaos. The Sernet bench poured onto the pitch, players piled on top of their goalkeeper-turned-goalscorer, and even Pond was grinning in disbelief. It was a goal that will live forever in Sernet football folklore: a moment of audacity, courage, and pure magic. Legendary goalkeeper and goalscorer Tomasz Pasarowski, the saviour of the nation, the guardian of the net, had actually scored. The sernetians were going wild.

Another interesting statistic to note is the fact that we have conceded the least goals in our group, with only eight shots ever hitting the back of our net. With sixteen goals scored (which is not the highest amount in our group) that makes our goal difference +8.

We are using our original starting 11 for the next two games, the only exception being that Andrejano will start at the match against Free Republics. We are planning multiple substitutions throughout the course of the game. Everyone will have the chance to do something meaningful on the pitch for Sernet.

Analysis:
Sernet is currently at 2nd place with a solid 20 points on the table despite being a match behind; it is immediately obvious that we should continue at this tempo. But how will the steamers fare against our next two opponents? We play Yuezhou in Sernetesen first and then we fly off to play Free Republics at the Olden stadium in Falkamore, Nejax. Apparently, you don't mess with Nejax. We'll see how it goes on the day. Anyways, thats all from me for now, catch you later at the match!

Guide to Yuezhou fans - How to get to Sernetesen Lighthouse Stadium

Welcome, Yuezhou fans, to the wonderful country of Sernet! Thank you for visiting Sernet. You may find that our extensive rail network may be challenging to navigate, or that you can't seem to find where Sernetesen Lighthouse stadium is. This guide is designed to help you!

When you arrive at Sernetesen Storimidros International (we're assuming that's where you land), follow signage until you end up at the SMR station for whichever terminal you land at - for you lot its its likely to be Terminal 4. From here you have two options: take the slow SMR service down to Sernetesen, or take the fast Airline service to Sernetesen Arsenal. We'd recommend you take the Airline; it gets you from the airport to Sernetesen in just 15 minutes (a bit longer if catching it from Terminal 4) for a very slightly higher fare. Once at Sernetesen Arsenal, utilise the covered walkway to get to Sanosia Junction. From there, catch a westbound SMR Lime Line service towards Damonesiyum. Be careful, most SMR lines have a ton of branches, and the Lime line is no exception. However, the Lime Line has helpfully been named after the colour it is shown as, so that's nice. Just make sure to catch either a train that terminates at Spaldensen Banks or a train that says it goes via Lighthouse Wharf. You shouldn't have to wait too long as frequency on the SMR is good. Get off at Lighthouse Wharf, and from there it is literally a 2 minute walk to the stadium. Sernet has an abundance of public toilets should you need the loo. The SMR train doesn't have toilets, but Airline does. Upon arrival at Lighthouse Wharf, you should find all the amenities you need; restaurants, cafes, shops, you name it. Free wifi is available at the airport, on the trains and at the stadium. If you wish to stay at a hotel, there are plenty relatively cheap but high quality hotels at Lighthouse Wharf. Staff will be at all mentioned stations and around the stadium to provide assistance. We hope this guide will allow you to navigate to your destination with ease. Enjoy your visit to Sernet!

Exclusive interview with legendary Sernetian keeper Tomasz Pasarowski

Shortly after his unbelievable match-winning header against Yangchenia - a moment already being described as "the most iconic goal in Sernet’s modern footballing history" - the mythical goalkeeper sat down with reporter Salman for an in-depth interview.
Calm, humble, and still slightly amused by the reaction to his goal, Pasarowski opened up about his childhood, his career, the team’s rise, and what the last match meant to him.

Salman: Tomasz, let's start with the obvious. You scored a winning goal - as a goalkeeper. Has it fully sunk in yet?

Pasarowski:
[Laughs] Nah, not really. I've watched the replay like twenty thousand times now and I still can’t believe it was me jumping above everyone. At first I wasn't even going to go up for the corner, but then Coach Pond shouted, "Go on then!" so I went. And when it went in... ...I don’t think I've ever felt anything like that before. It still feels unreal. Goalkeeper-turned-goalscorer, as the fans put it...

Salman: The moment has already become legendary back home. What was going through your mind when you ran forward?

Pasarowski:
Mostly: "Don’t trip over." Then: "Don’t miss the ball." Then: "I love my country."
I knew it was late in the match and that if we wanted to win, we had to take a risk. The delivery was perfect, I attacked it, and somehow it flew in. For a second it went silent - then everyone exploded. Even my teammates didn’t know how to celebrate with me. I’ll never forget those seconds.

Salman: Let’s go back a bit. For the benefit of anyone who doesn't know your story; how did a boy from Suribań end up here?

Pasarowski:
It’s a long story, but I love telling it. I was born in Suribań, in the governorate of Strołazaw, up in the north-east. When I was three, my family moved to Sermeslau. That’s where everything really began - where I discovered football.

At first I played as a striker. I loved scoring goals, running forward, all of that. But one day at school, Coldhills-Blobnoslau Primary by the way, the guy who usually played as goalkeeper was sick, and the guys said, "Tomasz, you’re tall - you do it."
I wasn’t tall at all, by the way - I was just a tad bit taller than them - but I tried it. Why not I guess.

Something just clicked. I made a bunch of saves, all of my mates were shouting my name, and I realised:
This is what I’m good at. This is who I am.

By the way, the school sent me an email, asking if I could come in and do a talk at an assembly. Already accepted it.

Salman: [Laughs] Ahahaha, the kids will love it. National hero walks into school.

Pasarowski: 100%. Anyways, back to the story.
After that, I joined my local club: Blobnoslau Snowmen CFC. I played there until I was ten, when Sermeslau Giants academy took me in. That changed my life. Even more so than that match where I discovered my goalkeeping talent. They taught me discipline, positioning, mental focus - everything a proper keeper needs.

Now I'm 24, and I've stayed with Giants ever since. It's home. And to be here, playing for the national team, scoring a winner... ...it feels like all the steps of that journey led to this moment. Huge thanks to everyone along my journey: my parents, for propelling me forward, my mates at school, everyone at the academy, the guys at the Giants... ...and of course all the supporters, from all over the country.

Salman: That’s an incredible story. Your connection to Sermeslau seems very strong.

Pasarowski:
Absolutely. Sermeslau is where I grew up, where my friends are, where I learned football properly. Plus its a lovely city. The people there supported me from the beginning. Every time I play for Sernet, I think of them. I think of the primary school pitch, the Snowmen, the academy coaches... all of it. Especially my local area, Blobnoslau. The place is my number 1 fan club. Those guys love me and I love them all back. Without them, I wouldn't be who I am today. Even from Suribań, where I occasionally visited and still do, I get a ton of support. I am technically a Suribańiak as well, after all. It was where I was born. One of the doctors who was there at the hospital where I was born reached out to me - I was genuinely touched by the fact that he took the time to write me a letter and everything. I met up with him in Stensemertef for a coffee, and I can say we have become good friends now.

Salman: Wonderful. It's so nice to hear your heartwarming story. Round of applause for Tomasz!

Alright, a slightly different question now. Let's talk about the team. Sernet are having a remarkable campaign. How would you describe the mood inside the squad right now?

Pasarowski:
Positive. Focused. Confident. But without being arrogant.
We’ve gone through tough matches, amazing wins, unexpected moments - like my header - and we've come out stronger each time. The players trust each other, and Pond has built something really special. There’s a belief that we’re not just participating just for the sake of participating anymore - we’re competing to qualify. Possibly to make it even further than that.

Salman: You mentioned Coach Pond. What’s your relationship with him like?

Pasarowski:
He’s demanding but fair. He expects you to give everything but he also gives you confidence. When he told me to go forward for the corner, that was a small moment but it speaks to the trust he has in us. He believes in the players - and that belief spreads through the whole squad. The guy's honestly a legend, I must say. He's an absolute role-model coach.

Salman: Final question: after everything that’s happened - the saves, the performances, the goal what’s next for you?

Pasarowski:
I’m still a goalkeeper, so the next step is simple: keep the ball out of the net. We got two big games coming up, although I might be taking a break on one of them. It'll be Tytus's time to shine against Free Republics. Although you never know, I might still play. Yuezhou especially will be tough (not underestimating Free Republics though), so I've got to lock in. Unfortunately its highly unlikely that I'll score any more goals. That goal was amazing, but it’s not my job to score. My job is to keep us safe at the back and help this team go as far as it can. And if one day another crazy moment happens, well... ...maybe we’ll talk about it again!


As the interview ends, Pasarowski smiles in the same unassuming way he celebrates his saves - calm, grounded, and deeply connected to his roots. His journey from Suribań, to Sermeslau, to that unforgettable header in Yangchenia is the kind of story that national teams are built on: humble beginnings, hard work, and the courage to rise when it matters most.

Uwe Bärwald is arguably the most famous fashion designer from the Union and the designer of sports uniforms for both the national football team and the Olympic squads. He joined our interviewer for a conversation about his life amid the centenary World Cup as his nation wears his uniforms. INT: Another initiative that you have undertaken is the opening of a collection of luxury hotels and resorts under your name. That is a significant departure from your typical fashion offerings. Why was this decision made?

UB: Yes, we signed a long-term licensing agreement for the development of luxury hotels and results. Obviously we are a fashion business, and so under the agreement our partners are responsible for construction, management, operations, and so on. We retain creative control over interior design, furnishings, and other stylistic aspects. This is merely and extension of our existing forays into other fashion accessories such as furnishings.

INT: Haw large are these hotels?

UB: They are luxury hotels and resorts. Obviously the size varies from location to location, but they range from about 40 rooms or suites to 160, with most being on the larger end. I would say the typical one is in the 140-room range.

INT: This sounds like a serious logistical undertaking for a fashion company. Were there any additional issues that you did not foresee?

UB: I would say the whole process went very smoothly. We were selective in who we licensed with, only the most competent hotel operators were selected.

INT: What motivated you to make this foray into the hotel business?

UB: We chose to begin the hotel project on the thirtieth anniversary of opening the business, to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the company. I could not think of a more energizing prospect than bringing my philosophy of style and design to a collection of hotels and resorts. Today, more than ever before fashion has expanded to encompass our way of life, not just how we dress, but where we live, which restaurants we eat at, which car we drive, where we go on holiday and which hotels we stay in. I strongly believe that for those people who enjoy the fashion and home furnishings collections, there will be a real enthusiasm for the possibility to now stay at one of our hotels or resorts.

INT: Was there not a significant market risk in branching out into a new area that your company has not been a part of?

UB: In the year after our first announcement we received a remarkable response from around the world. It signified to use that all lights were green on what was an ambitious undertaking. We spent the first period identifying potential locations in important travel destinations for some of our first openings and from the success of that have continued to expand. Yes there is risk, but one must always be at the forefront of innovation or else be left in the dust. We have been very intentional about always being forward-looking and seeking to identify openings in the market.

INT: Have you continued to expand into this area beyond just the hotel and resort line?

UB: After the initial success of our hotels, we were approached by developers of luxury apartments to help design interiors as we had for the hotels, although this project has remained much smaller in scope. For both the hotels and apartments were offer a specially designed line of home furnishings products.

The following is an excerpt from a series of articles published by leading Katzeburgian gaming magazine Starter Life.

For a game with wide-ranging and deep mechanics across a number of areas, Lands of Eternia occasionally had some very stupid in-game mechanics which could cause absolute chaos when exploited in just the right way. This story - and the tale of the player who pulled it off - is one of those times.

Mercer Software's earliest design documents about Lands of Eternia suggest a dream of a 'game with boundless potential and realistic in-world consistency tying everything together in a neat little package' - with all things in early-stage LoE needing to have realistic justification for its existence. For example, a town growing naturally through guild support would need to ensure that one type of store or shop wasn't constantly being propped up (for example, you couldn't have 15 pubs in your little village just because), nor could rare items be duplicated at will just because you grinded enough to secure loot - many rare items were a single drop and that was it.

But perhaps the most head-scratching of all these implementations was the need to ensure that every single gold piece in the Eternia Island economy was accounted for and stored somewhere on the island - there were no digital currencies in LoE; everything was done through the gold piece, the main currency of the game which could be stored in player accounts at many banks spread across the island. This gold, rather than vanish into the virtual backend so a player could go and collect at any time, would instead be literally stored in the vaults of the bank they deposited it in - meaning if you dropped 1000 pieces off at the Straton Bank, you'd need to go back to collect it if you wanted to make a withdrawal, even if you normally spent most of your in-game time on the other side of the island.

While grounded in some sort of realism, this naturally would lead to major challenges from the island's banks as they tried to ensure safe and secure distribution of funds - in the early years of the game many caravans carrying gold between towns were stopped and robbed, with the highwaymen making off with thousands of gold pieces at a time. But one bank was above most of this, and in fact prided itself on being the 'bastion of security for your gold on Eternia Island', with rave reviews from anyone who used said bank as it being safe, secure, and quick to give you your money when requested.

That was of course, until a group of players broke in and robbed everything of value.

Eternia Bank was the central bank which was overseen by the very developers of the game itself, providing players with a 'safe' option from the start of the game to drop their money off and have it be protected. The bank, found in the north-west of the island map and which would eventually have a player town grown around it called Oakwood, was staffed by members of the development team itself, with a 24-hour rota scheduled allowing for more staff to be helping players at peak times. It was a novel concept and presented quite an interesting challenge for anyone looking to delve into the underworld of crime on Eternia Island - would it even be feasible to rob? Many tried. In the three years from launch to a wider player base, more than 500 players attempted to break into Eternia Bank and the riches within, with almost all of them quickly being disarmed or killed by the bank staff, which were tougher than the majority of players on the server. Each attempt was then loudly broadcast out to the wider server, reinforcing a single rule which to most LoE players was close to paramount; you don't even try to get into Eternia Bank.

Enter Marcus Gilchrist, one of the initial group of beta players who got early access onto Eternia Island in the months prior to public launch. Under his username sloopsleuth, he was fairly unremarkable of a player - the average LoE player who would do a few quests, dip their toes into the social systems and deep profession system to give a few different jobs a go, and then slowly work their way through the overarching game questline. But unbeknownst to almost everyone in game and to this day - Marcus was one of a small group of thieves who would pull off the biggest heist in the history of Lands of Eternia. A heist which, until this article, was unsolved by the community at large. For Marcus is better known under a different name in game lore - The Silver Shroud. The man who robbed the Eternia Bank.

"It's fair to say that my knowledge of the bank and its layout before it got surrounded by the city of Oakwood was crucial to the fact we were able to get away with it," Marcus told us all these years later. Now rather fittingly a bank manager himself, Marcus talked us through every step of the heist itself, which was only possible due to the fact he was actually part of that initial beta group. "Because there were so few of us at first, the developers were more interested in what we were engaging with and what we weren't," Marcus said. "I made my way up to the bank just to see what was over there and what type of quests I could pick up, which allowed me a nice cover to make my way around the bank and get a good idea of the ins/outs and potential weak spots. I never planned to rob it right off the bat; it was just getting an idea of how the system worked and how the mechanic of storing all player gold in an actual building made any sense."

Marcus was able to also take note of the initial schedules of the development staff, noting that late at night when player counts were at their lowest, there would be minimal staff on board guarding the bank. It would still be a risky route in, but when its quiet in the dark of Katzeburgian night would make for a good time to strike. "By the time the game launched, it was really hard to make any real inroads into the bank itself," Marcus recalled. "The town popped up seemingly overnight which restricted a lot of activity from being possible. By that point, I had managed to land with a nice group of players who I'd go questing with and we always made a bit of a joke about how funny it would be to try and rob the bank. But it was always waved away as being impossible - and each time someone else tried and was named and shamed for the server to see, it reinforced that point more and more."

What would be the turning point in the desire to actually put Eternia Bank to the test would be the creation of a guildhouse in the town of Oakwood belonging to Marcus' in-game guild Silver Hands in Trouble. Situated on the outskirts of the town, the guildhouse was mostly a place for guild members to work away on various projects and chat through plans for further questing. It would be one evening in AK2 that such a meeting was taking place in the guildhouse. "We had run to a bit of a lull in what we wanted to do in-game," Marcus said. "Simply wanting to tell a bit of a joke to lighten the mood, Dan (another SHT player, called silver_shark in game) said 'well, why don't we try and rob the bank then?' - this time, people weren't straight away throwing it out with the bathwater."

The guild started lightly discussing potential plans to break into the bank, figuring it's a 'go big or go home' moment which would either turn them into in-game legends or see them thrown back to the start - either way, it would give them plenty of new things to do in game. And so Marcus and three other players started cracking plans - and cracking rocks below the guildhouse itself - to figure out how to breach the unbreachable. Their potential solution? Going under the bank itself. "We knew a couple of attempts had tried to dig into the bank, but our approach was to use it solely as a bit of a distraction ploy while we exploited another weak spot," Marcus chuckled. "We thought if we had a couple of people captured then the bank would drop their guard in the immediate aftermath - no one would be that stupid to try twice in such quick succession."

And so a tunnel was dug underneath Eternia Bank, with a small group of three players acting as the decoys - trying to break into the vault and fight off guards, while the real group of Marcus, Dan, and one other, would exploit a small corner of the bank which hadn't been blocked off by wider development - a wall which just ever so slightly allowed players to sneak into the vault itself when attacked correctly. The tunnel crew struck shortly after 1am on May 13, AK3, activating a plan which had taken more than six months in planning and years of in-game knowledge to execute properly. The three from the tunnel immediately set off alarms in the bank and drew the developer staff towards them; attacking them as they tried 'in vain' to break into the vault. But this distraction allowed the core team to actually go about their work relatively quietly; the tunnel team holding off the staff just long enough for Marcus to slip in, pocket more than one million gold pieces (at the time a ridiculous amount of gold which would make him the richest player in the game by several thousands kilometres) and slip out the way he came in - vanishing into the night before any of the staff had realised what had happened.

By the time the extent of the robbery was uncovered, a server wide manhunt was put into place, with the largest in-game bounty on record being offered to whoever would bring the Silver Shroud - named because of the magic spell Marcus cast on himself to blur his character and avoid any specific in-game identification - to justice. But things were already too late - Marcus had not only made a swift exit from Oakwood entirely, but went dark in-game as well, logging out and not returning to the game for more than six months. "I figured going quiet and logging out would be the best bet," Marcus said. "I knew the developers would have records of who had what in their inventory and had logged in and when, but I figured as long as I didn't go back into the game, I'd be alright. But it was torture being away from the game for that long, knowing that I had done this huge job and successfully hidden it from the world - I held out as long as I could."

The world Marcus logged back into six months later had mostly moved on from the dramatic heist of Eternia Bank - outside of the sheer economic impact which had hit the island as a result. With a huge chunk of the island's financial savings vanishing into thin air overnight, both Mercer Software and the island's inhabitants panicked as they tried to stabilise a rapidly shifting economy. Mercer Software finally put gold behind the virtual vault door, meaning noone else could break into a bank and steal other players' gold pieces, while players who had lost all their funds as a result of the heist rioted and caused significant trouble across the island, leading to the destruction of a handful of smaller player towns and a rapid shift in which players had the biggest wallets. He would continue to play normally as if he hadn't robbed the most secure bank in the game and would in fact remain on Eternia Island for another seven years - by which point he had slowly but surely laundered a bulk of the heist rewards through his other professions in game. By the time he ended up leaving Eternia Island for good in AK11, he had become one of the richest players on the server - with a suspiciously generated wealth stemming from years of just doing average player things.

"I don't think anyone in-game suspected a thing," Marcus laughed. "I was contacted once by the developers, who had finally figured it out that it was me who had stolen the bulk of the items, but they decided that because I had gotten away with it for so long, there was no need to punish me now - they let me quit a free man."

The developers did make one other amend though - fitting the Silver Shroud into overall game lore; placing wanted posters across Eternia Island and keeping the open bounty available for the entire run of the game's life - to this day, the bounty on the Silver Shroud remains unclaimed.

Katzeburg blasts to new record win as side keeps pace in playoff chase

The first ever Katzeburgian national team game at Anchor Field may have just given fans a moment which will be hard to beat, as the Blue Cats stormed to a double-digit score and new record win as they look to keep pace with Natkr in the World Cup 100 Qualifiers.

The side hosted Europeasia in the first match of what could have been a monumental window in the Group 21 qualifiers, with Inverhaven City's Anchor Field the location as Katzeburg looked to do the double over Europeasia after a slim 4-3 win back on matchday two. While manager Becka Haberkorn announced a slightly rotated side - with Beauden Moore stepping into goals for his first appearance this cycle and Erik Clarkson handed the armband in his 100th Katzeburg appearance - the side hit the floor running, with Drake Wruck putting the result almost beyond doubt after the first 15 minutes, netting a rapid hat-trick with a pair of neat finishes from the edge of the box and a thundering header off a Serena Plank corner. Littleport AFC forward Walton Hershey would make the most of his start in the lineup, netting a brace with a neatly-placed free-kick in the 37th minute and a rocketing effort in the 57th minute which left the Europeasia keeper with no chance at stopping the effort. Gwen Sessions and Cale Fux, both getting a run-out into the starting XI thanks to Haberkorn's rotation, made the most of their chances too, picking up a goal each to extend the game well beyond doubt for the Katzeburgians.

But Wruck wouldn't be finished for the day, shattering the five-goal haul claimed by Lloyd Field only a few weeks earlier with a second hat-trick of the afternoon, putting two goals into the back of the net in the final 10 minutes to take his tally to six and hand Katzeburg the comfiest win in their young history. To say the record win was unexpected would be an understatement, with the capacity crowd of Anchor Field roaring at each goal as it went in; a strong affirmation that when it can click for Katzeburg, it can really click for them. So there was little additional surprise that the side struggled in their second game of the window, away to lowly Konkert.

The Blue Cats would take the lead relatively early, with Lloyd Field scoring on his return to the starting lineup in the 26th minute through a simple tap-in off a Meriel Arkwright cross - but the side would labour to make the most of their advantage of possession over the side, seeing a number of attacks break down in the final third as Konkert's backline remained resolute. The hosts would eventually tie things up in the 80th minute following a lapse in defensive concentration by the Blue Cats backline, with a mis-placed pass from Elmer Spears in his 100th game allowing the Konkert striker to pick up the ball behind the Katzeburgian backline and slot their effort around Ry Whinery. With Katzeburg needing to secure a win to maintain pace within the group, the side pushed forward hard for the final 10 minutes but still found themselves unable to create a meaningful chance until the 89th minute, where substitute Elvin Greenberg would write his name into the headlines with a brilliant bit of skill to twist past a pair of Konkert defenders with the ball and sneak his effort into the bottom right corner of the goal - just past the outstretched arms of the keeper.

"It was a sweet feeling to see Elvin make such a crucial impact at the late stage of the game," Becka Haberkorn told media in Konkert after the game. "The team had a bit of a self-induced hangover off the back of that record win over Europeasia and really struggled to imprint themselves on the game as much as they should have - A win is just what was needed though and it keeps us well in the hunt. We've got another massive two games coming up and we really can't afford to be asleep at the wheel here - Pasarga is going to be a huge ask to get anything at all from, but if we can sneak a result against Kaumann then we might be in with a chance of keeping the pressure on Natkr. We are the chasing one out of the two which is a much harder position to be in - we need to be perfect to keep the chase on; Natkr just needs to stay calm and see things out."

The win was a vital three points for the Katzeburgians and gives the Blue Cats their fourth win in five games; a pace which sees the side sitting a single point behind Natkr and now six points ahead of fourth-placed Kaumann. With just second qualifying for the World Cup Playoffs, Katzeburg have it all to do in the final five games of their campaign, and the side has their biggest ask of the final run up next - facing undefeated group leaders Pasarga at Katzestadt Arena.

The game comes at a time where Pasarga have shown they are not totally insurmountable, with the side conceding two goals at home to Manuelian Empire in their most recent matchup, but a point against the runaway group leaders would be a huge swing in their direction as the side fights hard to sneak into second place ahead of the final stretch. Katzeburg also take on Kaumann in Kaumann in the other game of the next international window, with the side hoping they can retain some of the goal-scoring prowess from their previous clash, which ended 7-2 in favour of the Blue Cats.

Boffins from the KBC data team suggest Katzeburg have a 30% chance to make the playoffs as it currently stands, with their direct rivals Natkr having a 65% chance to see things through.

The Match

Despite our draw, our game with Saint Eleanor was one of our best performances yet, as we managed to strike a draw with the 6th best team out of all the teams competing for qualification. The Woodsmerean fans enjoyed watching this spectacle of a match, and the draw once more proved our capabilities, to Group 29.

Both the Hares and the White Stars (Saint Eleanor) commenced defensive: we incorporated the defensive 4-4-2 against their usual 4-3-2-1. Ojalas and Vilbetti helped to open up the pitch and advance past the first two lines of Saint Eleanor. After some passing between them and the midfielders, they had reached the penalty box. Vilbetti tried a shot from the side, but missed by a few metres. However, when he re-attempted, Vilbetti was able to shoot from a better position and barely managed to tap the ball into the goal. Despite the underwhelming goal, it still meant something to score against such a good team, hence the celebrations from the Woodsmereans were intense. Some danced, some sang, some just stood, but everyone yelled like normal to show appreciation for the Hares.

The goal was followed by fierce competition for the ball between both sides, and amounted to very little progress. The half-time whistle blew and the modern amenities of Randvu Stadium pleased the fans from both sides.

The match recommenced and Saint Eleanor's midfielders passed the ball amongst themselves, slowly advancing. The Hares did try their best to hold of the White Stars but the defenders did not manage to save the goal by Graham Lawson. It sure was a blow for the Hares, and they failed to regain momentum for the rest of the match. Kalninsu’s work rate was vital in intercepting Eleanor’s long passes - yet his late fatigue let the visitors regain possession more freely.

The final whistle blew, and both sides departed unamused. Reged said on social media that it was "a good score, but rather disappointing". The Hares can learn from their mistakes and do better next time.

The Match

The Hares were praised for their victory over Saint Lazarus, who they overpowered 5-3. It was certainly a game of ups and downs, and great embracement from the Hares, of their all-rounded 4-4-2 formation. The team clearly was able to adapt the lessons from the recent match against Himurajima, in order to use counterattacks and interceptions to their advantage. Another point to note was that Saint Lazarus had been struggling with funding previously, so that could have affected the performance of the Lazarenes.

Woodsmere opened up with a press forward, aided by the advancing midfielder line. Just 6 minutes in, Vilbetti had already flanked the defence and scored. This goal was promptly followed by even more cheering from the Woodsmerean fans. The Hares continued their pressing forward, but this time with more defense from the Lazarenes. Regardless, the midfielders pressed forward and Laansu tapped the ball into the goal instantly after receiving the ball from Uska. Then the Hares scored once more, thanks to Ojalas 25 minutes into the match. By now, the fans got tired of cheering and began chanting newly-made slogans like " Hædettis! Hædettis!" (We will win! We will win!). As the Hares tired and compressed their midfield too narrowly, Lazarus exploited the half-spaces through Rahman and Viray. This helped significantly, as their progression happened unhindered. Villariño scored rather accurately from around 20 metres away. Despite there being only a few thousand Lazarenes, their yelling overpowered the Woodsmerean slogans. 12 minutes afterwards they scored again, this time Cheon thanks to an impeccable passing accuracy from Rahman.

The half time whistle was blown. Rivergreen Stadium was indeed busy, with the managing company saying that 48 thousand tickets were sold! Both teams regrouped at halftime while fans enjoyed refreshments from Randvu’s caterers. When the matched recommenced, Lazarus continued their exploitation and Viray managed to score. But then after a few minutes, Woodsmere applied Reged's winning plan and it was extremely effective: the Lazarenes were pushed back. Once again, the Hares began their scoring streak and Roheline scored with his "aura" - as his fans would describe him. 6 minutes before the final whistle, Vilbetti turned on and absolutely demolished the astray Lazarenes. He dribbled past at least 5 players, and scored in the top-left corner of the goal. The goalkeeper was unable to reach there, so it ended up a glorious goal. Vilbetti rose up his hands in pride and victory for his nation, with the fans.

This goal was followed by some mere passes between the Woodsmerean midfielders. The whistle blew, and a deafening "Hædetas!" (We have won!). Among the departing crowds, the anthem was sung over and over, in respect of the team. We spoke to Reged who said, "Certainly another win in our records. We do hope to apply our tactics to our coming matches."

Next up, we face Xanneria and Norway-Sweden-Finland, away. It is extremely unlikely to lose against NSF, considering their statistics. However, we barely managed to beat Xanneria, last time only thanks to playing at home. To defeat them again, our plans need to be adapted. Apart from that, we have pretty high prospects. STEWARTIKA TOPS GROUP 8 YET AGAIN AS HIGH-STAKE MATCHES LOOM

After two crucial wins against Sajnur and Ranoria, extending Stewartika to five straight wins and ten unbeaten, the Pigs rise up to top Group 8 once again thanks to the top-table clash between the Martian Independent Republic and Kelssek ending in favor of the Voyagers with a 2-0 scoreline. The gap is just one point, and Royal Purple face both of their rivals very soon after a trip to Vetrahjart. The pressure has never been higher, but Stewartika seem even to it as they are determined to make it to West Pavlova for the World Cup Finals.

Matchday 11 - New Colors

Walking out onto the pitch of the massive National Stadium in Sajnur’s capital city, Javoser, Stewartika come swagged out in their new yellow and seaspray third kit, the design attracting great praise from pundits.

The Pigs started off the game like normal - keeping in mind the previous result of 5-1 in their favor the last time around. Over the course of the ninety minutes, Stewartika ran riot in front of the furious home fans, the first goal a near post skipping shot by Jin played through by Kim, followed by a Sung-assisted Sjoberg header. In the final minutes, a penalty conceded by Sajnur was converted by Kim to allow him a goal, graciously given by strike substitute Erikkson. Sajnuran hearts are crushed once more as Stewartika take all three points at their home ground.

Matchday 12 - Uneasy Victory

Before an energetic as usual crowd at Illney, Stewartika faced Ranoria this time at home after beating them 0-2 away on the last fixture. Now with a much more rotated lineup to begin the preparations for the big must win matches, there was a lot of confidence going into this game that Royal Purple would once again deliver a comfortable victory.

Sure enough, Stewartika started off strong, with the starting Erikkson easily bagging a goal from range. Everything from there, however, quickly went wrong. As Erikkson picked up the ball around the halfway line, Ranorian striker Bjorn Rottmann comes in with a horrific sliding challenge, sending his Stewartikan counterpart screaming to the ground. Immediately seeing red, Rottmann leaves the pitch quickly, but the damage was done. In tears, Erikkson has to be walked off the pitch, Sebastian Polluck making his first World Cup appearance to replace him.

While Ranoria never managed to trouble the Stewartikan defense with ten men, Stewartika were clearly demoralized by the injury and never managed to score again, the visiting team scraping by with a 1-0 defeat - with especial heroics from keeper Linus Weidemann. In an interview with Kunio, the head coach had this to say:

“It’s uh, very unlucky for Darius to get that injury in such an important time. Thankfully, with all respect to him, we don’t rely on him in strike anymore, so we can hopefully get by if that’s the extent of our injuries so far. I had a talk with the medical staff it seems it’s a very mild rupture so he’ll hopefully be back for the finals if we make it that far. Again, absolutely crushed for Daruis, I hope he gets better soon.”

Bandar Suryana—Riandera is indeed kicking a** at their historic WC debut. The Rafflesias' most recent game was against Elmyia, whom they defeated 7-2.

Elmyia scored the first goal of the match at 11', but then we caught up to them when Woolridge struck six minutes later. Twenty-six minutes in, Zhang scored another goal for Riandera. The Elmyians balanced the scores when they scored at 37', but then Sutantoputri came along and turned the tables at 40'.

The Elmyians made several attempts to win over Riandera in the second half, but none of them were close to successes. Zhang scored yet another goal for Riandera at 56', while Wahyuni struck nine minutes later. Handoyo scored at 81', while Woolridge scored the last goal of the game just four minutes later.

The Rafflesias shall next face Baker Park as the away team, and Ethane back at Kubah Olahraga BanSur.

The ultimate embodiment of Managed Democracy's brutal resolve. A monument to Freedom capable of singlehandedly turning the tide of war. A roost for enough Eagle fighters to scour a planet, a supply depot that could support an entire world's Helldiver operations by itself, an artillery platform capable of raining shells on a meteorological scale. This was the beating, mobile heart of the Galactic War on Tyranny. Countless operatives worked aboard to keep the war effort going, and while the station was currently dedicated to the Illuminate Front, there was another semi-pressing matter that required attention.

Analytical algorithms were run on the latest freedomball engagements of the Super Earth Senators. After a string of successes and draws, the team had finally encountered its next loss against the very opponents they had demolished at the World Cup's beginning. The New Montreal States had been stagnated into a draw, but Audioslavia had managed an uncontested victory of two points to none. The situation was growing worse by the day, it seemed- Super Earth had been surpassed by Snestar, and there was a not-insignificant chance they would be unable to qualify for the next round of the competition. That it was one of if not the largest World Cup in history was of no consequence- victory was absolute and defeat was unacceptable.

"There," analyst Marwaan noted as he paused the footage during Fisher's spectacular fumble of an incoming goal. "That was absolutely attainable. Accounting for the reflexes required in training-"

"They get stims in training," his counterpart- Nizharadze- countered. "The team's been deprived of them their entire operation due to extranational legal concerns. And even in the field, most Helldivers are authorised to use experimental infusions that make the stims even more potent. They've been getting beaten, battered and bruised for weeks on end without any medication at all. It's the exact opposite of how Helldivers typically operate."

"They're trained to resist extensive combat trauma even without immediate stim access." Marwaan crossed his arms, surveying another footage snippet. The closest the Senators got to a goal was a combined effort from Deadman and Creeper, who'd managed to snatch the ball against the odds and almost nailed it into the net. "These two have dedication. Where's their close support? If Charity-" Lassie. "-had chosen to advance-"

"Deadman was onfield the entire match and Creeper is a dedicated substitute. The two of them are about as good as they come and it wasn't enough. It's not about initiative, it's about endurance. Divers aren't even expected to survive one mission, let alone an entire months-long operation." Nizharadze switched the footage to the second goal lost by Super Earth, another Fisher failure. "The match stabilised after halftime, but only narrowly. The longer this tournament goes on the worse it's going to get. We need to authorise stim use, give them some reprieve. It's not as if they have addictive properties."

"Of course they don't," Marwaan earnestly agreed, "but no amount of technical support will make up for unsatisfactory tactics. Their formations are ill-considered and they are falling into reflexive patterns that do not match the situation at hand. They need initiative and dedication. The best way to fight in freedomball is not yet well-known, but it never will be if experimentation does not take place. They are rigid."

"Uncompromising," Nizharadze argued. "Like good soldiers."

"Like dying soldiers," came the counter. "If there's going to be another attempt at this multiversal engagement, we need test data. And if the team isn't going to achieve victory regardless, we may as well push them to try new tactics and begin determining what training we will need to do for the next."

"That sounds almost defeatist," Nizharadze groaned, crossing her arms. "Even from a realistic standpoint, there's no value in sacrificing their chances just to get a few more sample matches. They've done well against some of the best in the multiverse. There's always inconsistency to these things. Thus far they've only actually lost to veterans of the sporting world out there. The field will narrow and they'll find ways to triumph. We just need to offer all the support we can."

Each would submit their interpretations to the analytical algorithm, that most sacred of calculation software derived from the very voting booths that enabled Managed Democracy to prosper.

The results would determine Super Earth's freedomball future.

”You complete and utter idiot, what were you thinking?!” Clara yelled, while brandishing a rolled up periodical at Jasper, aiming up a hit of his arm

”Shaking hands and striking a bargain with a primordial magical entity of almost unlimited power! Have you not learnt one single thing from all the books we’ve read up on. You don’t strike bargains with strange magical entities! Especially not the powerful ones!”

Clara held the periodical aloft for a moment, before dropping it and running over to embrace Jasper

”Are you okay you absolute numpty?” Clara asked in a much softer voice

”Yes my love I’m fine, I didn’t promise my soul or have my name taken from me, although it did go on quite a treatise on names, but I digress. I’m not quite the fool you think I am, there just wasn’t any other way, the entity Disorder was, well fuzzy is the best way to describe it I couldn’t get a proper look, I needed to get closer as this was the only chance I had. Got good news for you though, your theory is correct; under that noise I swear it looks like the man in the portrait. I’m convinced that you are right that the Uniter put the power of Disorder into someone so he could bind and imprison them, that you can’t lock up an idea but you can get around that by putting them into a physical body.”

Jasper said the last part excitedly, and for a brief moment he and Clara were caught up in the excitement of all their research paying off, that their theory was correct. But after the initial buzz, both of them became quiet knowing the logical extension of the theory. That they couldn’t put the cork back in the bottle, what the Uniter did was bring the abstract to the real and there was no going back to the abstract. They would need to host it somewhere, and more importantly in someone, the power of Order was already burning its way through the artefact reaching out to flow into Jasper.

The knowing silence hung heavy in the air, Jasper tried to break it by moving the conversation away from what they were both thinking.

”Besides I didn’t agree to anything we weren’t already planning, we were never going to give all that power to Graves, and we’ve gotten something to help break through his defences.”

In a flash Clara had picked up the rolled up periodical and thwacked Jasper on the head.

If you ever do anything like that again Jasper Poole, a primordial being won’t be the death of you, I bloody will!

PRESIDENT’S HOUSE SWITCHBOARD: This is the President’s House, may I ask who is dialing?
JONES: Tammy Jones. I need to speak to Brett Booth.
SWITCHBOARD: Ma’am, I need to know the nature of this phone call. I can’t just put you directly…
JONES: God damn it, give me Brett Booth!
SWITCHBOARD: (pause) Hang on a sec, ma’am, what did you say your name was?
JONES: Tammy Jones.
SWITCHBOARD: (background voice says “put her through!”) Ma’am, apparently President Booth was expecting this. Going to ask you to hold, please.

(slight delay, some groovy hold music plays)

BOOTH: This is President Booth.
JONES: Brett, this is Tammy, what the hell is going on?
BOOTH: I don’t know… I heard your name thrown about the other day, I don’t know what’s going on. You want to tell me what’s happening?
JONES: Sure. Some creep asked me out online, I said yes, we went to dinner and he kept asking me about you.
BOOTH: Uh, what?
JONES: Yeah, he said he had heard we dated back in the day. I never told him that, I don’t know who told him that. Who the fuck told him that? Have you been saying anything?
BOOTH: Tammy…
JONES: Because when we split up, I thought we split on good terms. I don’t know how the fuck anyone knew we had dated, and you were never the kind of guy to blab about that sort of stuff.
BOOTH: Tammy…
JONES: I’d sure like to know how, because that guy creeped me out. He kept putting the moves to me, too. I threatened to call the cops on him if he tried it again.
BOOTH: Can I? I think I know what’s going on.
JONES: OK, Brett, what?
BOOTH: I get the feeling that guy was an operative of the Conservative Party. I think they’re trying to dig up some dirt to try to get me removed from office. Did the guy say what his name was?
JONES: Will Sherman, or something like that. He said he was a day trader. He made $20 million last year.
BOOTH: Alright, hang on a sec, I got someone in the room with me, see if he might know this person, see if he works for the party.
JONES: So, you want me to hold?
BOOTH: Hang on. (Booth, away from the phone, can be heard saying “see if you can find any logs for a Will Sherman. Go for any names that sound like that, too.”)
JONES: So… life treating you well?
BOOTH: Not really, this has been a pain in the ass, and I’m sorry you’re getting roped into this. Honestly, I’m amazed you got roped into it at all. It’s been, what, 20 years, since we dated?
JONES: Yeah.
BOOTH: Did you tell him anything?
JONES: No. I expected he wanted to know about me, all he wanted to know was about you and it pissed me off. Someone like that… I think he wanted to get something that was beyond… you know?
BOOTH: Sure.
JONES: Like, fucking christ, Brett, that’s the creepiest person I’ve ever met in my life.
BOOTH: One second. (Booth is heard asking “did you say ‘William Sheridan?’ He’s an operative. Cool.”) So, my guy in here said there’s a guy, William Sheridan, he’s an operative with the Conservative Party over there. I’m going to get some folks on the horn, because this is a violation. I’m sorry this happened to you. But do yourself a favor and block any contacts you have with this guy.
JONES: Oh, I already did.
BOOTH: I’ll be on the phone with the Conservatives asking about this.
JONES: Cool. Thanks a bunch, Brett.
BOOTH: Sure.

(Five minutes later, this phone call was placed by Booth, to the office of Conservative Party leader Tom Baxter.)

BAXTER: Yeah?
BOOTH: Hey Baxter, got a question for you.
BAXTER: This better be good. What do you want?
BOOTH: You know a man named William Sheridan?
BAXTER: Never heard of ‘em. (hangs up)
BOOTH: Well, obviously… god damn it, did he hang up?

(a minute later)
BOOTH: Baxter, I wasn’t done yet.
BAXTER: Well, I’m done with you. Quit wasting my time. If you’re going to go after Bill, you’re going through me first.
BOOTH: First off, I don’t need the hostility. Secondly, I’m wanting to know why an ex-girlfriend of mine was calling me about this guy.
BAXTER: What Bill Sheridan does in his private life is, quite frankly, not your business.
BOOTH: If he’s spending an entire date with her trying to get dirt on me, that is my business. Now am I going to get this the easy way, or am I going to have to force it out of you?
BAXTER: Fuck off, Booth. That seat’s mine soon, come Hell or high water. (hangs up)
BOOTH: …motherfucker.

Brett Booth sat at his desk for a long time, contemplating his next move. He made another phone call.

“Yeah, I’ve got reason to believe he’s misusing his power,” Booth said. “I think it’s reason to remove him from office.”

A day after World Cup 100 Match 11: HOT-DAMN 6-2 Olastor – 8:20 in the morning

The beautiful thing about a morning on the beach at Southern Tip is that not many people were up and about. The Stevensons could enjoy a day out on the beach – Ernie and Wendy, Drake and Taylor with little Kenny. Ernie’s kids were off to school. They had to learn for the day. But for once – just this once, Ernie was allowing himself a little bit of time to chill out. The next day he’d be out attending to team training, getting ready for HOT-DAMN’s next match with Chemicala.

At that point, HOT-DAMN was the clear leader in the group. At 11-0-0, they were seen among veteran observers as the favorite to qualify for World Cup 100 from the group. And maybe some of the HOT-DAMN squad was feeling that, too. Upon getting home, Ernie wrote an all-caps text to the entire team and its staff:

“DO NOT DISCUSS WINNING GROUP, DO NOT ACT LIKE WE HAVE WON, DO NOT GET COMPLACENT!!!” Ernie texted.

The message was quite clear: Under no circumstances should anyone from the HOT-DAMN squad act like the group had been won. There were plenty of topics they could discuss – plenty of topics the team and the Stevenson family could discuss. They could talk about the instability going on back home. They could talk about television. They could talk about video games. They could talk about beer. They could talk about that space video game “Dangerous Galaxy” that Ernie liked to play in the offseason. They could even talk about whatever was happening with Jeruselem. But under no circumstances whatsoever could anyone talk about the prospect of qualifying for the World Cup proper.

“Drake… can you do something for me, next time we have a big match?” Ernie asked.

“What?” Drake asked.

“The next time we have a big match and people get excited, can you please keep your fucking shirt on and watch your fucking liquor?” Ernie asked. “The entire multiverse got to see that the other day. I got sent more memes than I’m comfortable with thinking about with you and Mathis with your shirts off screaming like a bunch of banshees. Please… keep your clothes on.”

“Oh, yeah, sorry, I won’t do that again,” Drake said. “Got excited and in the moment.”

“Yeah, last thing I need is you going naked on me, Drake,” Ernie responded. “Nobody needs to see that.”

“I’m not taking my pants off, bro,” Drake shot back. “This isn’t Jeruselem. I wear clothes around here.”

“OK, glad that’s settled,” Ernie said.

There were still some very tough matches to play, and all of them, Ernie feared, were trap games. There was Chemicala next – a team that probably could want to take a massive upset win against a team getting too far ahead of themselves. There was Astograth, a team Ernie still felt was plenty talented. There was Vaishnavaria, who might still do something of note in the tournament, and then there was Zwangzug.

Ernie and the team were still losing sleep over Zwangzug. They were the squad, Ernie feared, that could truly slip up the beer leaguers. The good news for the beer leaguers, though, was they’d be at home, in one of the rowdiest places in the multiverse, Brewery Stadium. If the fans in Brewery Stadium could get nearly as rowdy as they did in the Brusselstein match, then maybe, by some chance, they could throw the Zwangzug Zebras off their game.

But that was a few weeks out. Chemicala was next, as was a trip out there. Ernie knew what they needed to do. Kick ass, take names, and get out of there with three points. Ernie figured the team would use the same game plan they used in the first Chemicala match and it would work out decently well. But the other teams – Astograth and Zwangzug, in particular, Ernie wanted to make sure he could switch things up. After all, he still had enough confidence in both teams to do something to shift things up. He knew these were no fools.

But, for now, a time to relax. All that sat in front of them, for miles away, until you got to the barrier islands to the east – was water. You’d see some boats go past from time to time, but it was just sea and peacefulness. On occasion you’d see some parents led by children out to the water. The children wanted to splash around in the waves and wanted to splash with their parents or their siblings. On other occasions, a young couple or an old couple would be enjoying one of those long walks on the beach. Invariably, they’d see the Stevensons lounging on the beach, and they’d wave.

The Stevensons would wave back. Here on the beach of Southern Tip, the Stevensons got to enjoy a rare moment where they weren’t treated like celebrities. They wouldn’t get mobbed. They were just like everyone else. Here, people treated them just like everyone else. Their parents, Carl and Angela, could go out to a nearby breakfast place and nobody would ask them about their kids – how Drake and Taylor were getting ready for the racing season, and how Ernie was leading the HOT-DAMN squad so well.

Instead, Carl and Angela enjoyed breakfast every morning with a group of people their age, and they’d talk about the news. What was going on back in Hapilopper. What was going on in HOT-DAMN. What was going on around Anaia. These were people treating people like people, not like celebrities. That’s why the Stevensons loved Southern Tip so much. It was only a 20 minute drive away from New Hap City, but yet it felt a world away. New Hap City was wild, insane, and, so it seemed, a giant party. Ernie couldn’t go five steps without being mobbed by fans. Neither could Drake or Taylor. So they stayed away from New Hap City.

Fortunately, Southern Tip was much different. It was quieter. You could see the stars at night, and you could get a good bit of peace and quiet.

Because peace and quiet was all the Stevensons needed right now. Ernie needed it before he got back into the fray.

I am fuming, we managed to draw again, against another team that is almost dead bottom. Ken Stavisk should be sacked, this is the third strait draw, and we are facing Banija and Kita-Hinode in our next two matches. Both of those teams destroyed us in our first match against them, so we better come out with two wins, or else our world cup dreams will be crushed. The Echo Grid should solve any issues with the players, due to The Echo Grid’s goal to produce the best players from Soviet Kemrainan youths. But the issue is the manager, I maintain that we should sack Stavisk and install Zaggy Nocklov as our manager. As for the game, it was just a load of nothing, both teams were flat, resulting in an overall boring match. Our next two matches will be a test for Stavisk, if he fails at both, I would wish for him to be sacked and replaced, but there is always hope. However, hope doesn’t win matches, performances win matches, we must start performing better that we are!

OOC: I must apologise that I didn’t post my lineup for the last match days, I have been rather busy, but now things have started to calm down.

This Kanzlian fighter though reliable, lacked bite.

The Kanzlian Air Force was largely content with the Schatzki Astute in their arsenal and so Schatzki ventured to international markets to broaden their market. After establishing a processing plant in Sathurica in 1939, the Sathurican government released a fighter specification and asked multiple aircraft manufacturers to design a fighter aircraft to those specification. Schatzki jumped in on the competition and submitted a proposal (Ontwerp 21) to the Sathurican government.

Unfortunately for Schatzki, the Sathurican government would ultimately drop Schatzki's proposal, instead going on to adopt a fighter design from Lockelin in 1940. Without a potential customer, Schatzki offered the design to the Kanzlian Air Force who were initially hesitant. However with increasing tensions with Vazantina, the Kanzlian Air Force funded the project in October 1940 where a prototype was built in 1941 as Ontwerp 22. Ontwerp 22 had a gull-wing design and was powered by a rather weak engine, which the Kanzlian Air Force was quick to note during testing. They had better luck with Ontwerp 23 however, which was far more conventional, this time powered by the Avioibsia license built AT-5C engine. A prototype was built in late 1941 and first flown on February 27 1942.

Happy with how the design was going, the Kanzlian Air Force ordered 20 initial units in 1942 whilst Schatzki flushed out the design. On May 1942, the first units was delivered and immediately put into service, replacing the last of the Schatzki Astute. Schatzki would also subsequently design other variants, including light (dive) bomber, trainer, and seaplane variants. Ultimately though, only the trainer variant was purchased by the Kanzlian Air Force in 1943.

The Austere is a historic plane in both that this continued Schatzkis presence in Kanzlia as it saved the company from financial ruin. It also paved the way for the Schatzki-Avioibsia J.V. Ardent later down the line. The last of the Austeres was finally retired in 1959 when the trainer variant was replaced by the Avioibsia Huntress. The museum have three Austeres in our inventory here at Szbedansk, all of which are in flying condition! They'll almost always appear in air parades, you really cant miss them! Due to its historical significance the museum puts the Austere on rank 6.

The Austere had a relatively quiet career as Kanzlia remained peaceful throughout their service life. The Austere proved reliable aircrafts, however their performance suffered terribly in higher altitudes compared to foreign examples. Their armaments was also relatively light (4 machine guns). Schatzki tried to remedy this with incremental improvements but it would remain an issue. An issue which would push the Austere to quick retirement with the introduction of the turboprop powered Schatzki Ardent.

The Austere was in service in tandem with Avioibsia's Thunderer. Kanzlian Air Force doctrine of the time reserved actual dogfighting to the Thunderer thanks to their agility and nimbleness. The Austere meanwhile was reserved to target higher altitude aircrafts such as bombers and the like. It became quite clear rather early on with the adoption of this doctrine that the Austere's engine wasnt optimised for higher altitudes but without the offset of war, this flaw was never punished. Thankfully.

3.2 Ghost of the Past


Santiago felt as if time stood still seeing that Z. It shocked him to his core to see that cursed Z out on the road again. Looking at it brough back a mixed array of emotions. Happy ones, driving along the streets and highways of Sao Salvador and throughout southwestern HUElavia. A sad and tragic one from the loss of the previous owner, a close friend and rival of his. He knew that he had to surpass that Z, try to put it in its place.

He floored it more, catching up to the Z with each passing kilometer. He would swerve past traffic swiftly, a very comfortable feature he loved out of his Fiera. While he knew he likely had better horsepower and top speed than the Z, he wanted to get close enough to see if he was truly seeing a ghost or someone new. He continued to speed up, edging closer and closer to the driver's side of the car. He saw the opening coming up and knew he had the chance to see if it was a mirage or reality.

The opening came where there was 2 Kilometers where there was very little cars around them and he began to speed up more to finally pull up towards the Z. Going neck and neck, he now was able to turn and see what was next to him. He turns his head to the right and sees a man. A young one at that. He looked Portuzian-HUElavian, in his 20s. Santiago looked back on the road to make sure he wasn't going to crash into anybody. He looked again and still saw the young man driving the Z. A sense of relief fell upon Santiago, knowing that he was not going insane, or seeing things.

But, he still felt uneasy, knowing that the Z was still alive and driving on the highway. An intrusive thought came at whether he should purposely spin out the Z. But that risked a harmful, if not deadly crash at this speed and having both the Z's driver and his life ruined. He knew he had to get away as quickly as possible from that car. After all, that car brought misfortune to anyone who was its owner. And he did not want to be near that car if anything were to happen.

He began to speed up, now starting to pull away from the Z. He'd look at the mirror on the side and then towards the back, seeing it trying to keep up, but it could not reach him. He began to speed away and see its headlights grow dimmer and dimmer in the background. When he'd finally see the car was no longer in sight, he began to really breathe calmer and loosen the tension he was feeling. Santiago felt his hand tremble a bit, but he had to take a deep breath and relax. He knew he had to make a call as soon as he was able to.

We return to battle against the nation that has brought us our biggest loss these qualifiers so far. We lost 4-0 away in MD2 against the highest rank in our group then. Now, they are in 2nd behind Indusse, fighting for qualification. It is HUElavia, the only nation we have faced in both hockey and football. For the team, the most incredible thing would be to win. The most realistic thing would be to lose. A perhaps achievable thing is to try and go for the draw, by holding out defensively. It is no secret that the SFF puts a big focus on defence over attack, which comes in handy against big players and big teams, while detracting against smaller teams we should be beating easily. Now of course, a focus on defense means jack all when your team is bad. We have seen such results in MD1, MD2, MD3, MD4, and MD5, where we got beaten each time easily. Then, the next 4 games at least showed us how it is supposed to occur. Whether such a streak could be continued was the question as the SAP 4-3-3 walked out against the HUE 4-2-3-1:

A big improvement compared to the previous meeting was that crimson didn't concede in 5 minutes. This seemed to stem from an improved defence, as they played with a lot more confidence compared to that other match. Great tackles, clean tackles, and great saves by Hranislav held off the attackers for at least the entire first half. While not as fearfull as before, many supporters were still terrified of half-time, as it gave Silivia a chance to give a team-talk, which so far this tournament, hasn't gotten the best results, but that had been improving over the last couple of matches. And in a similar vein, the team continued to hold against the onslaught as Silivia's team talk didn't seem to have any effect. An improvement. While nervous supporters watched the clock tick closer to the end of the game, they became even more nervous, as a late goal could end the team's efforts so far in this game. But luckily, tactics prevailed and Silivia's Crimsonite team managed to take home another point against another opponent.

Going from a 5 game losing streak to a 5 game unbeaten streak is quite the turn-around by Silivia. His words from the conference after the match against Knights of LUSITANIA have so far proven to hold pretty well, but the question remains whether such a form can continue and when it will come to an end. Some are discussing whether Indusse, currently topping the group, may be a bridge too far. Suffice to say, Silivia seems to not have to worry anymore regarding his position at all for this qualifying cycle. If he manages to stick the end and come out on top in the final few matches, it is not out of the question that he may keep his position going into further qualifiers.

Why change something that works? Silivia has so far gained 7 points from the last 5 matches, so it seemed like a no-brainer to keep the same tactics and try to pry more points from opponents underestimating our team, especially after the early decimations. Many fans are optimistic that our good form may continue, even against the team standing on top of the group. And even if its a loss, many hope the team can pick itself up quickly afterwards. Whether our form would continue was the question on everyone's mind as the SAP 4-3-3 lined up against the INS 4-3-3:

Again, the opposing team attacked the Crimsonite defence with everything they had, but the SFF defence stood strong. The variation between both teams in terms of focus on defence vs attack was clear. Both were good at what they were doing, and neither could break the other in the first half. As the whistle went to end it, both teams walked off to catch their breath in the locker room. And as both teams walked out for the 2nd half, the Indusse players seemed to get a 2nd wind and pounded the crimson even harder. With this continuous and relentless attack, eventually something had to give way, and unfortunately, it was our defence. A perfectly timed pass and run set Rahul up for a perfect oppourtunity to slot one past Hranislav. This was the first goal the team had conceded in 6 games, which was an impressive streak. A streak that had just been shattered. This meant the crimson had to get to attacking the opposing goal to salvage anything from this match. Unfortunately, the Indusse players refused to slow down and hammered down on the defence even more, as the goal boosted their confidence. Fortunately, one goal was all they could muster.

This loss puts our team in quite a precarious position. As Nova Dackians has upset Warkus in a 1-0 victory, it means they are 2 points behind with a game in hand. Alongside them, in 8th on GD, only 1 worse than our own, is Knights of LUSITANIA. Meanwhile, Bruinswik is 3 points ahead, with a match in hand, and a GD 3 better than our own. This means that our match against them in 2 MDs can be a big decider in whether a 6th place can be achieved. A win by 2 goals with these standings would bring us up a spot. Of course, other games we play will have a factor in whether that difference will exist then, but it seems to be the only spot we can gain where it is in our hands. If we wanted to gain 2 spots, it would require something just short of a miracle. However, on a positive note, the last few games have been fantastic in terms of the results. We beat the 3rd rank nation, drew the 1st and 4th ranked nations, and only lost to the 2nd rank by 1 goal. Our draws against numbers 7 and 8 out of 9 (we're 9th) were a bit underwhelming in this streak but points are points.

Know your Team!


With the Centenary Edition of the World Cup on the way, Indusse is all set with their squad to compete their way into the final stage. While the team has a few familiar faces in them, there is a bunch of players who are here in the national camp for the first time. "Know your Team!" is a special section of our reporting that focuses on introducing the team to our readers. Two players will be introduced to the readers, every issue. While we have already finished introducing most of our playing eleven squad, now we will end that part by introducing the last striker in the Starter Squad.

One of the younger generation in the national camp who is sought to be a key player in the future, Michael Djenkzo was born in the City of Lyssane in Malta. Just like most of the World Cup 99 - 100 season recruits, Djenkzo also got his induction through his domestic and Under nineteen nationals performance. Taking his first steps in Football at the age of nine, he was enrolled in multiple junior training centers by his parents. Eventually Djenkzo got himself to be a key player in his school team and later got selected to play for Lyssane City Youth Academy. Lyssane City Youths played a major role in training and developing Djenkzo to what he is now. His performance for Lyssane City got him his Under 19 Call and later his National Team Call. He was later promoted to the Lyssane City Main Squad at the age of sixteen and he continued his career there improving his skills. He was later transferred to the Reserve Team of Sindvpore FC where he was able to win a few youth leagues and also end up being a classy player. While the Sindvpore FC Management was in talks to promote him to the main squad, he was offered a contract to play for the Kelssek Club Coquitlam United. He currently plays for Coquitlam and later during the World Cup 99 Campaign he was selected to play in National Team of Indusse. He replaced Butea as a starter in the squad after Butea had retired. Djenkzo is young, quick and very skilful in set pieces.

With all the starter players now introduced, we will be moving forward with a small introduction of the National Team staffs including the manager and coaches from next edition. Stay Tuned for Know Your Team!


The Streak Continues!

Indusse has started its second half with a victory in their last match against Bruinswick. The next two fixtures they had was Away against Knights of LUSITANIA and a home match against Saperetia. When Indusse had faced the Knights at home, they won for a score of two goals against one. This time Knights wanted to score those two goals for themselves which is a sort of a vengeance against the Visitors. The match started with the usual trend of Indussean matches, the possession was with the visitors this time. The Knights seemed to be pretty aggressive from the start and it was pretty visible with them taking the first lead in the twentieth minute. Not long after, Grundjee scored the equalizer from a header at the twenty seventh minute. The joy of the Knights did not last long, even after the equalizer Indusse ended up turning superior in Possession which led to a goal by Djenkzo at the forty fourth minute. Soon after the half time whistle was blown and Indusse leads the match.

When the second half started, The Knights seemed more pumped and full of energy. Maybe they were still under the idea of taking a revenge against Indusse in this qualifying stage. Soon after, They were able to make the equalizing goal eventually sending Indussean fans to dismay. But the Flocking Blues, as they always say was not ready to give up. Captain of the Team, Mersias ended up scoring the goal that would change the perception of how the match needs to end at the sixty seventh minute giving the Visiting team a lead. Now The Knights seemed like they were losing the energy they had. They were not able to fight back to what they was supposed to. The game went on with Indusse's lead where the visitors kept on pushing for more goals. Soon after in the eighty second minute, Mersias scored his double eventually putting a full stop to all the efforts the Knights of LUSITANIA was trying to have. Indusse wins for a score of four against two, a game where the home team did try to put on some effort.

For the Next match, Indusse was back at home hosting Saperetia. In the last match against Saperatia, Indusse had defeated them for a score of three goals against one. This time Indusse had to be more careful since the visitors have been very defensive about their game not letting anyone score goals against them. From the very first whistle, it was clear that this match against Saperetia wasn’t going to be easy. The Crimsonites came at Indusse with all their might and confidence they gained from the last few matches. For the first few minutes, they looked dangerous, constantly testing The Flocking Blue backline and kudos to the Defense that they stood on where they were supposed to. From the four defenders of Indusse, Paulson stood out with his commitment and precise tackles.

The first half went by the same trend, both the teams had attacked and defended well. When the halftime whistle blew, it was still 0–0, and you could feel the tension in the air. Everyone knew that one mistake or one spark could change everything. When the game resumed, something had clearly changed. Djetson was replaced since his suffered a muscle pull in the first half and Buschelus was let in to take his place. Indusse was fierce now maybe because they felt energised and Buschelus was able to improve the connectivity in the midfield. Soon after, it happened. Around the 59th minute, Buschelus found a perfect pass through the midfield to Grundjee, who slipped it ahead to Rahul making a brilliant run into the box. The timing was flawless. One cool touch and the ball was past Hranislav. The crowd went wild. The tricolor waving, people shouting and cheering. Indusse has finally got the lead.

That goal broke Saperetia's incredible six-match streak without conceding, and you could see the shift immediately. Their shoulders dropped, and our players grew stronger with every pass. The energy in the team after the goal was incredible. The Flocking Blues kept pushing, dominating the game, and never letting the visitors find their rhythm again. Seperatia tried to fight back, but by then, our defence and midfield were completely in control. When the whistle to end the match finally came, the results were in. Indusse won for one single goal. The Visitors did give a tough fight, an unexpected one but this was not their game.

Robel Ezera was absolutely losing his mind. The WCC Vice President was pissed off beyond belief- in disbelief that this sort of thing was happening in the first place. The bullshit allegations, happening over Abahamba, of all countries- just stunning. "You know, I've got important, real fucking work to do in this place." He told his brother. He was seething. "Instead, we're dealing with this BS presentation, talking about a country that's not in World Cup competitions, and that probably couldn't even fuel their plane to fly anywhere outside of Arrosia. You see this shit with Jeruselem? That's real shit that's actually effecting the competition. Instead, I'm here, hauled in front of-"

"My brother, you have GOT to take this seriously." Victor said. "We... Are not in a good position right now." Robel Ezera was frowning. How the hell did he find himself here? It was, quite clearly, a ridiculous position to be in. No way in hell he was going to resign over Aba-freaking-hamba. "Look- I've gotten a summary of some quotes from various people back home about this. And their reaction to your predicament is... Mixed, to say the least."

Robel started reading.

Ezera read the above quotes. Full throated defense from Isaac- which made sense, considering he was also named. The Katikkiro offering a categorical denial. Everyone else... Kind of avoiding the issue. He might really be in a bind in this situation. The realities of what had been going were finally hitting him, with the full force of 1,000 tons. Was this really it for his career? Had helped completely reshape Banijan domestic football, served as a founding member of the IFCF Executive Committee, gotten nearly to the pinnacle- for it to end like this?

"What can we do here, Victor? I'm not admitting shit."

"Well, unfortunately, there aren't many ways out. They kind of have us in a bind- the type of bind that you never want to find yourself in." He told him. Robel was shaking his head. Was this the end? He had a couple of days left maybe- but his entire career might be running out of rope...

... "Wait, wait, wait!" One of her friends, who had come along with her, was trying to ask. "This Prince sounds so cute! But you have GOT to do a better job of spilling the tea, Ujamaa!"

The Omugaba laughed. She was excited- with an early afternoon match, she had woken up, spending all morning prepping with her friends. It was going to be a hell of a time- her first time seeing the dashing Prince- no, Crown Prince- of the dual islands. They had been pen pals for the last month- handwriting letters. Her grandfather, the Kabaka, would be proud that she knew how to mail a letter. She laughed at her own thought.

They would meet at the match- public functions. Then, of course, her flight back to Banija wasn't until four days after the match. So she could stick around and hang with the Prince, if he wanted to. She was a two-time Olympian, and an Olympic gold medalist in breakdancing- and yet, she had a lump in her throat. "Dang, I've never been so nervous!" She told one of her friends, who was giggling in the corner.

While the Omugaba was her for personal reasons, as the only Banijan royal in the country, she was also here representing her nation- in an unofficial official capacity. If that meant anything at all. That's why the first meeting between these two was very public, why he couldn't greet her at the airport- some diplomatic protocol, even in the wonky world of royals dating, had to be maintained. They'd meet at the match.

And so, when they got to the match, and met up with the Crown Prince in the suite, they were excited. Of course, his sister the Queen was there- and Omugaba Ujamaa knew that she had to impress her. "Your Majesty, thank you for welcoming me here." Very formally, the Banijan Princess bowed. "I present a gift from my nephew, supported by the Omukama- to showcase the friendship between our two countries." Out of her bag she pulled out a painting of a lion (representing Banija) warming up by a fire (a symbol of Zoroastrianism, Pasarga's primary religion).

"And your Highness." She looked up- getting dazzled at his eyes. Why she was really here- protocol demanded she greet the Queen first, of course- a royal never forgot their duty. "I have a gift, although mine is from me." She pulled it out- a certificate for... A dance instructor, that she had brought with her from Banija. Why not do a tango lesson? "If you're free after the match, that is- she can teach us anywhere we can find space!"

Smiling, the Omugaba and the Banijan delegation took in the match- and watched Pasarga's demolition of their much inferior opponent. And she smiled- things were looking bright, as she was swooning for the Prince.

SHORT- Tight win over energetic Kandorith side as Banija maintain pace atop Group 14


HERZEGOVINA CITY, MORAVICA- A tough window for Banija, as they traveled to take on a talented Kandorith side, who sit at third in Bnaija's qualifying group. And despite a wide open game that could've gone either way- the Kadongo Kamu disappointed the 90,000 strong at the Empress Masumi National Stadium in Tenkyo, as the Banijans narrowly defeated the hosts, 2-1, on the day. It was two first half goals for the Banijans this time- with Resnais-Mahama scoring in the 30th minute, while the captain, Son-Saka, scored one of his own in the 43rd minute.

Best way to silence an energetic crowd is to start well- and the Banijans did that. A 2-0 lead at the break, Kandorith fought their way back in, with a 72nd minute strike by Kenji Fujimoto, giving them everything to play for. And while the hosts had their chances to equalize, they couldn't quite get there. Some impressive saves from the keeper, and a tremendous 85th minute half-volley from Sora Ito, that beat the keeper and banged onto the post.

A tough away win, against a quality opponent. At home, the Banijans were rolling, tearing apart the Shiverian Republics by a score of 7-1. Complete domination of an overmatched opponent- as expected. A necessary win, as Banija and Reçueçn race towards what looks to be a high potential for a sensational finish in group 14.

The tough games will continue, as the Banijans travel to Soviet Kem to start the next window, who have been pretty strong this campaign. We'll be favored but- tricky all the same. Reçueçn is at a blistering pace themselves, so these are games that the Banijans need to pick up 3 points- or else Reçueçn will condemn the Kadongo Kamu to the playoffs. The journey only gets harder from here!

It had been a week since the fair- and at the highest levels of government, things were in crisis mode. They couldn't quite figure out what was going on- but these were more aggressive moves, culturally at least, than they've ever seen from the Kingdom of Banija- and they were caught flat-footed. With the WCC presentation that Thorvex made, they were basically assured that there was some sort of Banijan conspiracy to keep them out of the World Cup. Now, how deep it ran, and which levels of the Banijan government were involved, were certainly up in the air. The involvement of a party leader in the governing party made it really suspicious, but Isaac Lutombo was the leader in the Quebecois Commonwealth legislature- aka, an international lawmaking body. He's important- but he's not the #1 guy. The Katikkiro (not that the bastard could be trusted). had flatly denied any cabinet involvement in Ezera's allegations.

And then, the fact that this investigation timed perfectly with the Banijan embassy trying to throw a massive street party for one of its own TV networks, was... Interesting. What the hell was going on? Has there ever been an example of a government doing this- spending millions of NSDs on a public fair in a foreign country because one of their own national businesses got a contract? The Crown Prince, Thuku, was convinced that the whole thing was some kind of Banijan conspiracy. "I mean look- you thought I was crazy Dad when I said Banija tried to keep us out of the World Cup unjustly. And then..." the King simply nodded his head as his son spoke. "Look. It's all crazy. I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist. But waht the hell is going on? Everything is crazy, they've got a huge cultural fair in the middle of our nation's capitol. They appointed a new Ambassador too- if they want to be aggressive, getting a new guy in town would seem to fit that."

"Some things are just coincidences." The King said. "It's a little ridiculous that the Banijans are throwign fairs, and getting airtime in our country though. We now share a border with a major global power- and we need to react accordingly. Not in a buildup sense, of course- but we've got to act to protect our culture. Ensure that we don't just become dominated by Banijan corporations, or Banijan culture, or anything like that, because we share a border. We need to pass laws to protect us in that sense."

"We need to do more than that Dad." The Crown Prince said. "We need to arrest the Ambassador! Assefa Yitebarke is probably at the heart of this. He probably knows everything!" The Crown Prince stood up, now pacing back and forth across the room. "It's their whole big plan. Slow cultural takeover. Then economic domination. Then we're annexed- the 12th province, or whatever the hell they call them. Abahamba- no more. Just a region- hell, they'll probably split this place into multiple regions. And, of course, just to show we don't bow to those bastards, make sure that we get somebody in Raynor City like, yesterday. Get all of our ducks in a row- we are signing up for ARC VI, I don't give a damn what it takes."

"Whoa, whoa, slow down." The King said. "You can't arrest the Ambassador- arresting diplomats is basic deal number one on how not to deal with foreign countries, especially those that are much larger and stronger than our own!" The King slowed down. "We can't do anything stupid. We'll lose any moral high ground that we've gained through this affair- maybe quite a bit! No, let's be calm here. I have invited Thorvex to this country- give her the treatment, let her tell us what she knows."

"You think Reçueçn's Foreign Ministry will let her?" The Crown Prince said.

"We might as well try." The King said. "I've already sent a letter. We need to see every piece of evidence- directly. Worst they can do is say no." He paused, and then continued. "Don't lose your head son. You think we got to this position because we were crazy, and lost our own minds? No- we are Abahamban, and we're a proud, fiercely independent country. In fact, we have always been so even if we are less than 100 years old- and we're going to make sure that this happens." It was then that Dr. Ozzie knocked on the door outside. He was scheduled to come- about 15 minutes late. The King was always frustrated when people showed up late, but it did give him time to talk to things with his son, one on one, before the full cabinet met. "Come in."

The Doctor bowed deeply after he walked in. "Your Majesty, your Royal Highness." He said. "I have news- and it may not be good." In a country like Abahamba, where power rested in so few, and violence was the main political currency, bad news rarely mad its way all the way to the top. For your own survival, both political and literal, it was always best to send up the good news, and pretty much ignore the bad. So when bad news reached them, it was general earth-shattering- and none as earth-shattering as what they were about to hear.

"Well, I'm sure you've noticed things have been light around here." The King nodded. It was true- the palace had seemed emptier in recent days.

"Nobody can find good workers anymore- you know the lazy kids of this generation." The King said. He had a dramatic pause, for maybe about a minute- he was having yet another throbbing headache. And of course, he wasn't about to tell that to anybody that. "Don't worry, we'll tell my chief of staff to whip them into shape. I'm not worried. Get to why you're here Doctor."

"Well... That's why I'm here." The King was confused. "I'm sure you heard last week, of one of your chefs passing away?" The King nodded- Crown Prince Thuku had told him how the cook got sick and died. "Well.. She got sick."

"Don't tell me things I already know." The King demanded.

"Your Majesty, please." The King stopped him- took a big gulp of water, sighed, and then the Doctor continued speaking. "She got sick. We spent some time trying to figure out what sickness it was... And we have bad news. She got ebola." The King and the Crown Prince were stunned. The Crown Prince, especially so- since she had been a mistress of his, unbeknown to most.

"Ebola?!?!" The King was shocked. "Wait, so does that mean-"

"Your Majesty, you've got to put a hold on this. Gotta quarantine the entire Palace- we've got 6 more staffers in the hospital wing at this Palace- nobody with symptoms seems to have left." The King was floored- he didn't know what to say, as the Doctor continued. "Your Majesty, you can't let people leave this place. It can be a disaster."

The King stopped, looked at his son and the doctor, and was deep in thought. Ebola spreading here would likely cause panic- but his pounding headache wouldn't help him think straight. The King was not somebody who was super trusting of his Generals, either- an epidemic of any kind, at the Royal Palace, was not something to mess with. Then, he stood up. "We're not letting anyone leave. Keep this as tight to the chest as possible." The press in Abahamba largely spat out the government line, but if Foreign observers really paid attention, they might notice. The King was gambling that nobody was paying that much attention to his little old country.

"I am going to scramble my generals." That was his preferred term for switching their commands- he did that occasionally, to prevent any single one from gaining too much power.

"Dad- Your Majesty- should I write to Reçueçn telling them to not come here?" The Crown Prince asked.

"No." The King said. The King started coughing violently for about 30 seconds, and then composed himself. "We can hide it, no problem. This isn't an airborne disease- just don't be dumb about it. Now Thuku, find your cousin Iwe- we need to make sure he's safe. He's in the line of succession, remember."

"Oh, I almost forgot your Majesty." The Doctor said. "Iwe is also in the hospital wing." The King sat down, stunned. "I haven't seen him in a few hours- but I hear he has symptoms. Obviously, I've got him in a private room- I'm the only one who knows he's there." The King said thank you, and dismissed the Doctor.

"Well son." He said. "Keep yourself healthy- we got bigger shit going on here."

Greetings! I am writing to you from Abahamba- as the King of this nation, by right. I would, at first, like to thank you directly for what your Ministry has done, fighting for justice against the scourge that is the Kingdom of Banija. While I cannot say I am an expert in the machinations of the World Cup Committee, Ottilie Thorvex has been exemplary in finding out the truth here. Banijans, whether rogue or in government, have been plotting against Abahamba, and there is a historical element here. They grow too strong- and the rules of the world must apply to them, as they apply to the rest of us.

We know there is a whole process in your country for things like these, so I write to you directly. I would like to invite yourself, and Ottilie Thorvex directly, to Abahamba for a visit, at earliest convenience. A one day visit- it would be one of great luxury, as we would have plenty of time for you and your delegation to see the great things this land has to offer. I would also like Ottilie Thorvex to present copies, basically, of all evidence that was turned over to the WCC, to our Kingdom. It could show the strength of friendship between our nations, and the beginning of us getting a chance to re-pay your country for what they have done for us.

Error hung up abruptly. He was growing rather infuriated with the number of calls he was getting from Montrealais-sounding individuals offering him turnips at 'criminally low prices'. More so, given the fact that he was anxiously awaiting the results of his second referendum regarding the fate of Erroropolisish self-governance. The self-governance he was actually proposing was more akin to his own personal flavour of autocracy, but he was aware enough to know that pledging a dictatorship was unlikely to win the hearts, minds and votes of those dwelling within the city. Previously, he had been confident of his chances but that infernal Markus Wang-Wong had been pounding the campaign trail, taking every opportunity to discredit Error and besmirch his good name and intentions. All the covert jet-setting about to far-flung nations to play secretive World Cup qualifiers was really affecting his ability to voice proper rebuttals on the topic of his absenteeism. It's very difficult to contradict these allegations via an internet videocall from a changing room at a stadium in Ralsalin whilst surrounded by several penguins expecting a half-time team-talk. At least the penguins made it plausible that he was still in Paradystopia.

Error couldn't press the button to hang up quickly enough. He shuddered and felt an overwhelming urge to promptly flush his phone down the toilet. Tentatively holding the device betwixt thumb and forefinger at end of a fully extended arm, he made his way to the bathroom as he tried desperately to purge himself of mental images. He forced himself to picture Jeremy Jaffacake naked, vomited, then settled on something less appalling; the clubbing of seal pups. Just as he was set to release his phone into the pool of water ...

There was no caller ID. He grimaced.

It could be the electoral commission informing him that Erroropolis could now begin proceedings to become an independent nation.

With the slow, pained, and deliberate movements of an inexperienced bomb defuser, he pressed to answer via speakerphone, keeping the offending article as far from his face as he could manage without dislocating his shoulder.

"... hello? ..."

A moment of silence that felt like an eternity.

"Hello? Is that Error? It's Bob. You know, from accounts at the Paradystopi Football Association. Yeah, just wondered if you've got time for a brief chat.
