Paradystopi Chess Team

Postby Paradystopia » Sun Aug 03, 2025 1:37 am

The Paradystopi chess contingent, in order of ability
Malik Robertson
Human, Male, 22
If a style mod was a thing, it would be: -1

Were it not for the fact that he is clearly a human, Malik could be mistaken for a chessbot. Maybe it's down to a sibling rivalry against his sister's aggressive chess that he is more measured in his play and has studied intensely to counteract all the crazy gambits and brutal strategies thrown his way whilst growing up in her shadow. As such, he has developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of positions, strategies, and openings such that he has now eclipsed his sister atop the Paradystopi rankings. He can be a little conservative in his play, tending not to launch into attacking positions but instead slowly build up pressure on his opponent, taking pieces only once he can be certain in his own mind of claiming a material or positional advantage.

Common repetoire:
As white:
Anything that starts e4, on rare occasions a c4.
As black:
Caro-Kann is a common favourite, various Sicilian flavours.

Miri Robertson
Human, Female, 24
If a style mod was a thing, it would be: +4

Miri loves a chaotic attacking battle. Were it not for her sometimes kamikaze style of play, she could potentially be a better player than her brother. She loves to lure opponents into tricky gambits, and thrives on complicating the position though this can be to her own detriment. It's not unheard of for her to try unusual openings in an attempt to tear opponents away from their studied opening theory. She can be quite animated at the table too but has been known to play-act to either 'style out' an inaccuracy with assured arrogance, or get frustrated in a position she knows she's winning. A bit of a mistress of the 'dark arts', so to speak, with an arsenal of weapons to add a psychological element to proceedings.

Common repetoire:
As white:
London system, loves a Smith-Morra gambit, or a Stonewall attack.
As black:
Accelerated Sicilian lines, Albin Countergambit, A Latvian Gambit or two. Not opposed to an Alekhine defense.

Chirpsijibbers Clambanger
Pteron, Female, 7
If a style mod was a thing, it would be: -5

Paradystopia's premier otter player, Chirpsijibbers (or Chirpsi) is probably a little out of her depth. Some might say she is somewhat lucky to hold the national rank that she does. This comes down to her very defensive, and reactive, style of play. She prefers playing as black because she doesn't particularly do well with the initiative and is much better putting up a stoic defence, accepting draws or capitalising upon an opponent struggling with time pressure trying to work out how to break through her fortifications. You'll be very hard pushed to get her to accept a gambit.
Common repetoire:
As white:
Something passive.
As black:
Indian defence is a favourite.

Jim
Penguin, Male, unknown
If a style mod was a thing, it would be: {z : z∈ℂ}

If you don't get the style mod thing, don't worry. It's merely some quick and dirty maths jargon to demonstrate that Jim, as a chess player, is an unknowable and unpredictable entity.

Beyond the fact that he's a chess playing penguin, there's little else to say. He will hurl taken pieces from the board with total disregard for anyone else around him and squawk loudly after every move he plays. He is almost certain to be the bane of all the arbiters at the tournament in this regard.

Note for host: Due to his disruptive tendencies, I ask that when (or if?!) Jim is knocked out of the tournament that the result state he was disqualified due to his behaviour.
Common repetoire:
As white:
Absolutely whatever.
As black:
Absolutely whatever.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Anything they want, as long as it doesn't result in the deaths of my players

Addendum: Anybody is more than welcome to blame their defeats upon their players being struck by flying chess pieces, their game boards being disrupted by aforementioned flying chess pieces (and then having to be reset by arbiters), or simply having their concentration repeatedly broken by noisy penguin calls.

Jim is a nuisance to everyone, regardless of whether you are his opponent or not.

Rianderan Chess Team for the WCK

Postby Riandera » Sun Aug 03, 2025 4:59 am

Introduction - Look out! Rianderans on parade!

(Sorry for the random arranging, this is now based on the new domestic rankings in Riandera.)

Irene Susanti (#58 Int. / #1 Dom.)
(26 • Female • Human • She/Her)

Irene Susanti (b. March 1, 1999), formerly 3rd in Rianderan chess, is now 1st in the domestic ranks, according to the Rianderan Chess Federation (RCF). Irene hails from Bogor, a landlocked city on the western side of Java Region. She was fascinated with chess from a very young age, so her parents would train her to become one of Riandera's best chess players. At just 9, she was the champion of the Juniors 2007-2008 season in Riandera. She wanted to advance further in her career, so she joined her school's chess club. At the end of her high school years, she was declared the best chess player in her high school, and advanced to nationals. After her first nationals at 18, she was ranked #7 in the RCF's official domestic rankings. Irene kept the position until she dropped to #8 in the 2019-2020 season. However, she got back up to #6 the season later, and eventually rose to #1 after winning the 2024-2025 season and being the only Rianderan to advance to Round 2 in the Chess Battle Royale. She is the first West Javanese player in 18 seasons to win an RCF season.

Round 1: vs Margarita Altamiranda (#12, TJU)

Sri Nyoman Yuli (#81 Int. / #2 Dom.)
(28 • Female • Human • She/Her)

Sri Nyoman Yuli (b. July 27, 1997) used to be number #1 in Rianderan chess. Then, she fell at the finals of the 2024-2025 season to Irene Susanti, and dropped to #2 in the official domestic ranks. Yuli is from Ubud, a town in the island of Bali in the Java Region. Her parents were professional chess players, so she thought it was only right for her to continue their legacy. Aside from being the now-second best chess player in Riandera, Yuli also is the smartest person in the Oriental Republic, with an IQ of 203. At 9, she was versing adults in chess, and she would win almost every round. Yuli was part of her primary and high school's chess club. During freshman year, she was accepted to the 5th Rianderan University Students Chess Cup (RUSCC), where she won. After winning RUSCC, she went on to compete at her first RCF Championships near the end of her freshman year. She ended up at 6th on her debut. She was ranked 4th in the 2017-2018 season, and eventually went up to 1st in the 2023-2024 season.

Round 1: BYE
Round 2: vs Mark Jensen (#26, KAT)

Catarina "Rina" Ramos
(29 • Female • Human • She/Her)

Catarina Ramos, nicknamed Rina (b. December 14, 1995), is currently #3 in the RCF's official domestic rankings. She used to be #2, but fell when the initial #1, Sri Nyoman Yuli, fell to then-#3 Irene Susanti. Originally, she was into surfing. However, she changed to chess after getting poor grades in primary school. Rina was part of her high school's chess club, and got consistent places on the podium. She was supposed to compete in national chess championships, but rejected the opportunity for university. After graduating from university, she got back into chess, and has made her way up into the Top 2. Rina finished 5th on her debut at the 2018-2019 season, and worked her way up to #1 at the 2022-2023 season. However, she was knocked out by Sri Nyoman Yuli at the 2023 RCF Championships, and finished as #2 at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Round 1: Stijn van Dijk (#11, KYP)

Haji Setiawan (UR Int. / #4 Dom.)
(27 • Male • Human • He/Him)

Haji Setiawan (b. May 31, 1998) is currently unranked and 4th in the RCF's official domestic ranks. Haji comes from Lampung, in the southern part of Sumatra Region. He didn't know about chess until a school friend introduced him to the game. Haji grew interested in the game, and decided to enter regional championships. Little did he know, he would be making it to the international level. He made his debut in national chess at the 2019-2020 season, and finished 9th in the rankings. He jumped his way to 7th in the rankings the season later, and jumped higher to 5th in the 2021-2022 season. He stayed in that position until the 2023-2024 season, where he jumped a rank higher.

Round 1: vs Elani Jabulan (#15, SNL)

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes
Godmod game events: Yes, but with prior discussion
Godmod other events: Yes, but with prior discussion

WCK - South Newlandian player overview

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes
Godmod game events: Please ask first
Godmod other events: Please ask first

Chess has a long history in South Newlandia, and used to be considered one of the most important sports of the country. Just a few decades ago, most children would learn at least the basic rules of the game; but in recent years, the popularity of chess has waned. With the Elephants seeing success in various other sports, especially baseball, chess has become increasingly unpopular, and the South Newlandian Chess League is no longer what it was, either. The South Newlandian government is trying to do something about that - this tournament might just be the start. The South Newlandian players still hope to be competitive, but it increasingly seems like the Elephant Island is getting lapped over the board – and so far, that’s been true in the Multiversal Chess Championships. The Grand Casaran in Al-Hilal was the only tournament so far in which the South Newlandians looked competitive – with Jabulan finishing tied for 6th on +2 and Esteban and van Lundi also both going positive – but even here, they were never a serious threat to win the tournament. They’re now hoping to do better in the other Major tournament of the circuit, heading to Vaynorth, Eshialand.

Adam Esteban, 32 [22nd in World Chess Rankings]
Esteban has grown into his role as one of the best chess players in the country. Once a talented prodigy, he has turned into a great attacker with both colours. He does find himself in time trouble occasionally, but can also blitz out strong moves when needed. You’ll likely see him employ fancy new openings; it’s always interesting to see what Esteban has been working on. Supposedly, he has worked on sidelines of the Sicilian. So far, the MCC hasn’t quite gone his way, but he’s looking to re-establish himself as the best player in the country. Esteban likes to dress casually when playing chess, usually appearing in jeans and a monocoloured hoodie.

Khanyisa van Lundi, 23 [13th in World Chess Rankings]
The Elephants have a new prodigy after a string of strong performances first at youth tournaments, and later even taking a shocking victory in the South Newlandian Rapid Championship; the youngest player to ever accomplish that, narrowly beating out her teammate Esteban (who was also the previous record-holder). She likes to play quite fast and will typically have an advantage on the clock, and despite that, she’s able to make highly accurate moves very quickly. She also has an opening repertoire more broad than most South Newlandian chess players, making her tough to play against; she will pick her battles carefully. Van Lundi was born with albinism, and consequently prefers to wear clothing that protects her sensitive skin from the light. When allowed, she also likes to play with sunglasses to shield her eyes from the lights than can often be too bright for her liking.

Elani Jabulan, 30 [15th in World Chess Rankings]
Jabulan grew up in Stuska in Southern South Newlandia, and her talent was quickly evident. She has remarkable instinct and an ability to calculate quickly, making time pressure no real issue for her. For openings, she frequently finds herself playing most of the major viable variations, making it very difficult to predict what she’s about to play. She will frequently look into her opponents opening database to try and choose something that’ll give her good chances, and is generally considered a pioneer of deep computer analysis in South Newlandian chess. She likes to dress more formal than the two other South Newlandians on the team.

Prince Khatoon, 22 [Unranked]
Khatoon grew up in fairly humble beginnings in Elephant Valley, but showed a lot of affinity for chess early in his career. Khatoon is the shortest player on the team by far, but on the chess board, he’s nonetheless often defensive and cautious, happy to forgo immediate attacks in favour of playing for an advantageous position long-term. He struggled at the Elephant Chess Cup, but is looking to impress at his first solo big tournament after some encouraging results in South Newlandia lately.

The Kytlerian representatives at the WCK
A brief guide

JULIA WILLIS
Who she is: The daughter of a nationally rated Kytlerian chess player, mentee of Prof. John Roach (more on whom later), and now the face of the Kytlerian chess program. A pretty face, by common consensus, which may not be unrelated - then again, she's also been plenty good enough to warrant the focus, consistently picking up strong results on the second board in the ECC7 and ECC8 triumphs before moving up to the top board thereafter. The two combined have made her highly marketable, allowing her to become the first full-time Kytlerian chess player courtesy of deals with office furniture supplier Clarkson-Murphy and sportswear firm Amdani.
What she'll play: 1. Nf3 is her standard opening as white, while as black she usually goes for a symmetrical response to her opponent but sometimes opts for a c5 rather than e5 response to 1. e4. In general, her aim is to get her opponent to commit first, so that she can try to counter accordingly.
How she'll beat you: Responding to whatever you throw at her and taking control that way.
How you'll beat her: Making something of the fact you'll tend to be playing on your terms and using that initiative successfully.
How she's done so far: Less well than in the past, or to be more exact "than in ECCs past." Tilted by Felix Tremblay surviving her Elephant Gambit against him in the SN3C, she was then bogged down badly at the Grand Casaran (6/13 with just one win). Many feel she is due a return to form - but has she lost confidence as opponents adapt to her reactive playstyle?

JOHN ROACH
Who he is: A lecturer and researcher at the University of Zube, specifically in pure mathematics; he would have had an international chess career earlier if "international sporting career" - mind sports or otherwise - was a meaningful construct for his generation, growing up in the Kytlerian Isolation where international sport was shunned by right-wing governments in thrall to an enduring moral panic over "Recognised Performance Drugs." Was both top board and organisational leader for the ECC7 and ECC8 teams before focusing on the latter after that as he neared his 50s. He now focuses his playing efforts on tournaments with classical time controls.
What he'll play: Probably the Sicilian as black, with the Najdorf and Dragon his preferred lines there. As white, he reliably opens 1. e4 and his favourite continuation is the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation.
How he'll beat you: Deep preparation on his favoured lines allowing him to play with precision in complex positions.
How you'll beat him: Time pressure, especially as this competition lacks an increment. Especially if you shunt him into unfamiliar territory, although given his experience he's seen an awful lot...
How he's done so far: Fine, certainly for someone who's not a full-time player these days. Fourth at the SN3C (and the top non-Vielfaltigian), and 7/13 at the Grand Casaran.

STIJN VAN DIJK
Who he is: A former statistics student at the University of Zube who thrived in the famed "Mathematics v Margaret Institute" matches that made the campus the hotbed of Kytlerian chess, earning him a reserve spot in ECC7 - where he played the final two rounds, going 2/2 - and again at ECC8 before becoming a staple of the team thereafter.
What he'll play: Quite a few things, but he does like to have a strong pawn structure whenever possible, particularly valuing pawn chains.
How he'll beat you: Secure, steady play that either lets him take advantage of mistakes early or keeps him in the game to benefit from his pawn structure late.
How you'll beat him: Getting ahead in development as he focuses that bit too much on building a pawn wall.
How he's done so far: Decently. Fifth at the SN3C, pick of the Kytlerians at the Grand Casaran with 7.5/13.

MICHAEL RADLEY
Who he is: A recent Zube mathematics graduate, Radley shook himself right into the Scholars mix as a first-year student with an emphatic Mathematics vs Margaret Institute debut - draws against the two Scholars on the Margaret Institute team and wins over everyone else. He went unbeaten in his second and third appearances in the competition too and duly joined the Scholars fold.
What he'll play: As black, he favours the Sicilian Dragon as he's focused a lot on memorisation of those lines, though he's less predictable if players go 1. d4 against him. As white, he reliably starts 1. e4 in the hope of his opponent going for a Sicilian that he trusts his ability to handle; he most often plays Advance Variations against the Caro-Kann or French, or the Ruy Lopez in the event of an Open Game.
How he'll beat you: Knowing his way around familiar lines in general and Sicilians in particular.
How you'll beat him: Getting him into less familiar territory, especially given his relative inexperience.
How he's done so far: Not well. He was part of the rotated lineup used at the Battle Royale, but lost in the opening round to Khanyisa van Lundi.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes; I'd also be up for doing a "simulated game" where each of us, with engine assistance, make the moves we think our IC players would
Godmod game events: No
Godmod other events: No (probably - message me with ideas if you have them though, I may not say no!)
President of the World Cup Committee (cycles 100-102)
History since the Isolation: Hosted WC98/100, WBC61, CR48/49, ECC8, GCF World Trophy V | Won WBC62, ECC7/8/12 | 2nd WBC61, ECC11 | 3rd ECC9/10 | QF WC100, WB 47/L, WBC58/60
Officially less controversial than opposing torture (SC #591, GA #12)

Call it blind luck or a nation showing it's strength in a sport it knew very little about just a few years earlier, but the Katzeburgian delegation head to Eshialand with a high-mark of six competitors, thanks in no small part to the nation's showing in earlier competitions in the first season of the Multiversal Chess Championships.

Brian Bowman
World Ranking - =58

Brian is the head of the Waldstein Chess Club, one of the more well-known clubs to arise following the Katzeburgian success at the tenth Elephant Chess Cup. Brian, a 37-year-old graphic designer, rules over the club with a bit of an iron fist, with all players who sign up to play under the club needing to commit to a stringent and consistent practice process. It’s a regiment which has proven quite successful to date - but it’s fair to say this approach did not translate to the regional scene, with Brian overseeing a disastrous performance at the 4th Esportivan Sporting Festival, going from one of the nations favoured to win the whole thing to instead crashing out in the group stages.

The poor performance would extend to an ok showing at the Chess Battle Royale in Vielfaltig, with the Waldstein leader sent packing after a second round loss to Eleanor Rigby. As a result (and especially given the performances of some of the other Katzeburgian competitors in the MCC to date), Brian has found his position as Waldstein leader under threat, with rumours abounding another poor performance in Eshialand could see him fail to secure a contract in the start-up Katzeburgian Chess League.

Brian is deeply analytical about the moves he makes, spending a large chunk of his time away from the boards studying the game and openings. He is known to go really in-depth when scouting his upcoming opponents, even to the point where he has been able to identify players sleep schedules and movements in the lead up to important matches.

Rowena Sowards
World Ranking - 39

Rowena is a classic second-in-command to Brian and the Waldstein Chess Club, with the 28-year-old lawyer helping him oversee the club with a strict but successful hand. Rowena is arguably the player most members of the club don’t want to get on the wrong side of, as her blunt manner of speaking and nature to quickly get aggressive often leads to confrontations which puts Rowena well and truly in her element.

She is one of three Katzeburgians hoping to play the role of spoiler over in Eshianland, after she lifted the Chess Battle Royale in Vielfaltig, the first real success from a player outside of Ynysgard. Interest in her is through the roof domestically as a result, with chatter coming in from sources around Waldstein that she's already been offered a lucrative contract for the Warrirors in the KCL to lead the side.

Her ruthless nature extends to the board, zeroing in on any and all mistakes made by her opponents to exploit them to maximum effect, however this often means she can take a little too long to make her move, leaving a fatal flaw in her game which opponents will often try to use to their advantage.

Maria Deering
World Ranking - =58

The youngest member of the Waldstein Chess Club, Maria was hailed as an up and coming prodigy of Katzeburgian Chess until the wheels fell off at the Esportivan Sporting Festival. The 16-year-old had a rapid rise up the ranks since taking up the game in the aftermath of the nation’s first Elephant Chess Cup victory, and has been a consistent top ranking player at regional tournaments all across the country’s north west, often demolishing players double her age with relative ease.

With a lot of raw talent, she loves to trap people by playing on her age and fooling people into thinking they are just taking on a careless and lucky child, only to twist the knife in at the perfect time to leave opponents in a trap of their own making. A solid performance over in Vielfaltig saw her bow out in the second round following an all-Katzeburg tie against Rowena Sowards, but Maria will be keen to go one better this time around as she hopes to become the third Katzeburgian in a row to win a multiversal competition.

She has seen major development in her skills under the tutelage of Brian and Rowena and the potential is well and truly still there to be a leading light of the nation’s chess community, but to the dismay of her parents, has started to take on a few of those ruthless elements as well - however, spending some time with other players outside of the Waldstein club may prove beneficial this time out in Eshialand.

Emilia Ziegler
World Ranking - =26

Emilia Ziegler, a schoolteacher at Ynysgard Primary School, has been instrumental in helping shape the Ynysgard Chess Club lift not just one, but two Elephant Chess Cup trophies. Originally picking up the game as a way to distract some of her more unruly students, Emilia found home in the chess club and quickly rose up the ranks to become an anchor to the team’s successes.

Arguably the most astute and knowledgeable of the game itself, Emilia moved up into the first board spot after Rhys Furst stepped down at the end of the tenth Elephant Chess Cup and has been instrumental in creating a more welcoming and inclusive culture at the club - taking full advantage of the explosion of interest in the sport in the wake of the victory and helping guide the club to a successful defence of their title in South Newlandia.

A very well-rounded player, Emilia often spends a lot of time thinking about her move and the next few ahead - often leaving opponents looking at the clock to see how much time she has left. It’s a strategy which keeps her well informed of the game going on, but has been her largest flaw to date, failing to take full advantage of the time available to her and losing more than a few times as a result of running out of time.

However, since the team lifted their second Elephant Chess Cup, she has gone to ground, taking a long period of leave from work and becoming incredibly hard to find. However, she's now returned from the shadows to step into the limelight once more as she hopes to play spoiler in Eshialand once again - having already secured a spot in the Qualifier due to her runner-up finish in the Grand Casaran in TJUN-ia. Rumours abound that she has only done so to try and draw something or someone out into the open, most likely stemming from the mysterious circumstances which surrounded the side's return from South Newlandia following ECC XI.

Mark Jensen
World Ranking - =26

The former Senior Vice President of Merger Operations for Medium-Size Enterprises and International Affairs at the Bank of Katzeburg, Mark Jensen has been a rapidly rising star of Katzeburgian chess. Growing up playing chess on the island of Dragoonspiel, Mark left the sport and his family behind when he opted to move to the mainland to pursue education, creating a long-standing and emotional rift between himself and his father - former Ynysgard Chess Club captain Rhys Furst.

Mark had managed to put the sport well behind him until a chance flight he was on gave him a major epiphany unlike anything he had ever experienced. Taking stock in his life, Mark left his high-paying corporate job for a simple life on the docks of Ynysgard. Now the chief financial officer for the town’s council, Mark has been making up for lost time ever since, and not just with his father.

Mark was the second in command for the Ynysgard club's defence of the Elephant Chess Cup, and the first individual winner of a MCC competition from Katzeburg, nudging Emilia to the title in TJUN-ia at the Grand Casaran. However, he too went to ground following the side's return from South Newlandia, refusing to respond to requests for comments or participation and instead holing himself up inside his house on the outskirts of Ynysgard. At the request of Emilia, he has joined the Katzeburgian delegation in Eshialand as part of a wider plan.

Tina Mathieson
World Ranking - UR

Tina, a 33-year-old university lecturer, is the last member that makes up the core of the Waldstein Chess Club team, and in direct contrast with the more competitive and focused members of the team, is often described as ‘the fun one’. A lecturer in social care at the University of Waldstein, Tina brings a compassion and care rarely shown by the rest of the club, both in terms of her social approach - a friendly and smiling face no matter the results on the board - and in her playing style - giving her opponents arguably too much room to play and explore the game before making her moves.

But despite showing none of the fierce fighting skills the rest of her local club has, Tina gets results nonetheless, and with the KCL starting to accelerate in interest, Tina has decided an entry into the World Chess Knockouts may just be enough to help get a professional contract over the line for her, either at Waldstein or another number of clubs across the country.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Please absolutely go ahead, I know close to nothing about the notation and strategy of chess.
Godmod game events: Yes, but please feel free to chat through it with me over TG/Discord!
Godmod other events: Yes, but please feel free to chat through it with me over TG/Discord!

The Eshian Chess Federation
Players for the World Chess Knockouts

While a tournament was planned to determine the submissions for this tournament, they were ultimately scrapped due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, the ECF's submissions were determined based on a couple of factors, such as ECC performance and Zwischenzug.esh rating.

Player 1: Jason SEVERN
Age: 33
Favorite Openings: Ruy Lopez (White), Sicilian Dragon (Black)
Playstyle: A vibrant attacking style that prioritizes beautiful combinations rather than brute force.

Player 2: Jamie CARTWRIGHT
Age: 18
Favorite Openings: London System (White), Scandinavian Defense (Black)
Playstyle: What Jamie lacks in experience, he makes up for by throwing the opponent off of their experience and prep. Expect strange novelties right out of the opening if he comes to your board, and never keep your eye off the ball: he's studied lines far weirder than most others have.

Player 3: Stephanie JACOBSON
Age: 38
Favorite Openings: Ruy Lopez (White), King's Indian (Black)
Playstyle: Stephanie has always believed in the power of knights over bishops, and as such is known for trading away her bishops for her opponent's knights, as well as keeping the game relatively closed in order to show her knights' true potential.

Player 4: Mary NERATA
Age: 42
Favorite Openings: Italian (White), Petroff (Black)
Playstyle: Highly defensive, and unwilling to take too many risks. She'll often offer/accept draws despite being in an unclear position just because it's the safer option.
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.
Champions: Elephant Chess Cup XIII, Campionato Esportiva XL, Baptism of Fire LXXV, World Junior Hockey Championship XVII

A recent ruling in the Katzeburgian High Court case of Marshall v Katzeburg 55 KLR 172 (AK23) has shattered existing legal precedent when it comes to the releasing of information regarding known criminal contacts by law enforcement.

The ruling introduced a new test as to 'compelling public interest' which must be satisfied to release information regarding known criminal contacts, with requests for information to be released under Katzeburgian Freedom of Information requests needing to satisfy public interest in regards to the nature of criminal activity, the significance of the contact, the relevance of information to ongoing investigations, and the potential for harm to the individual which information is being requested under. In the immediate aftermath of the ruling, the Katzeburgian Data Commission received over 150 requests for criminal contact information to be released, including a request from someone working for the law firm Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant about someone called Jack Eulemann. The below is the information released on Eulemann by the Katzestadt Police Department.

Criminal Contact Information - Jack Ulysses Eulemann

Birth Name - Jack Ulysses Eulemann
Aliases - The Night Owl, The Counter, (REDACTED)
Date of Birth - (REDACTED), BK30
Place of Birth - (REDACTED), Katzeburg
Current Residence - (REDACTED), Inverhaven, Katzeburg
Criminal History - Jack Eulemann has a short criminal record, with a handful of minor crimes recorded prior to the Katzeburgian Revolution. As per the findings of the Katzeburgian Inquiry into Katzestadt Policing Corruption in AK11, there is a potential that Eulemann may have more involvement in criminal activity than is recorded, but records prior to the Katzeburgian Revolution are spotty at best.

BK14 - Shoplifting (Minor Offence) - Case Number APD-985-1782
Background and Notes - Eulemann was charged with a minor offence of shoplifting after being captured on camera stealing numerous loaves of bread and soup tins from a grocer in Axmund. Eulemann initially denied all knowledge of the thefts, before pleading guilty in court. Due to his legal status as a minor, he received 50 hours of community service.

BK10 - Fraud (Minor Offence) - Case Number KPD-989-2239
Background and Notes - Eulemann was charged with a minor offence of fraud relating to utilising a fake name to receive additional university student support funds. A total of 10,000 barins were fraudulently obtained by Eulemann as part of the scheme, which would qualify him for a major offence of fraud, but following his cooperation into the investigation into (REDACTED), his charges were reduced. Eulemann pled guilty and was sentenced to a suspended sentence of 10 months.

AK16 - Speeding (Minor Offence) - Case Number KPD-016-0891
Background and Notes - Eulemann was charged with a minor speeding offence after his vehicle, a Schwarzburn Motors Roadster 111 was captured on camera going more than 40 kilometres over the speed limit down the M1 between Katzestadt and Inverhaven. Eulemann pled no contest and was fined 1,000 barins as per the limit for individuals in his wage bracket.

Suspected Criminal Activities - Jack Eulemann is a primary suspect in an ongoing federal investigation into a nation-wide illegal betting syndicate. It is believed that Eulemann (REDACTED) is (REDACTED) totally (REDACTED) innocent. Other criminal activity Eulemann is suspected to be involved in is the practice of loan sharking, extortion, and money laundering. He is also suspected to be involved in some capacity in the murders of (REDACTED), (REDACTED), and (REDACTED), as well as the disappearances of John (REDACTED), and Klaus Rothbauer. Informants indicate that Eulemann rarely gets involved in the specific criminal actions which take place under his purview, often operating through subordinates and trusted individuals.

Public Persona - Jack Eulemann is a celebrated and respected figure in Katzeburgian business, having made a fortune in the aftermath of the Katzeburgian Revolution through a series of shrewd financial investments and real estate deals. He is the main proprietor of the Eulemann Foundation, a charity which helps provide significant international outreach and aid to nations across Esportiva. He is known to be a supporter of the Katzeburgian Alliance political party and has been one of their largest fundraisers in recent elections, and as a result is often seen collaborating with high-profile MPs and organisations across Katzeburg. His company Owl Holdings owns and operates a number of commercial and residential buildings across Katzestadt, Inverhaven, Konigpool, and Axmund, and is also owns 49% of Katzestadt firm Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant, following the firm's move to a private equity-backed model in AK18.

Known Contacts - Jack Eulemann is known to have a number of contacts with a criminal background. Notably, informants indicate there are three main heads involved in a wider criminal organisation at which Eulemann allegedly sits at the head.

(REDACTED) McGee - Eulemann's right-hand-man who oversees the enforcement of many of Eulemann's criminal activities. It is unknown how he links into Eulemann's organisation, but informants have indicated (REDACTED).
Joshua (REDACTED) - Believed to be Eulemann's technological expert, allowing for management as to money laundering operations and tracking of those in debt to Eulemann. It is not known how he links into Eulemann's organisation, but informants have indicated (REDACTED).
Lee (REDACTED) - Believed to be Eulemann's legal support. A lawyer at a high-ranking firm in Katzestadt, it is unknown how they link into Eulemann's organisation.

The limitations of the Kytlerian player pool have been somewhat exposed of late as the international competition has stepped up and/or the Kytlerians have stepped down. (Engine analysis of their games in the Multiversal Chess Championships suggests "and," for what it's worth.)

But the University of Zube collective remains tight-knit just as it ever was, and the trip to icy Eshialand for the World Chess Knockouts provides all concerned with a chance to reheat their play. Besides, it hasn't exactly been that bad.

"Everyone was close to parity at the Grand Casaran, and that was as bad as it got for the core players," noted NBO analyst Wecoisus Whootung. "The new players that got sent in for the Battle Royale all departed early, but that was such a random tournament that I think a lot of people will be minded to half-disregard it, and if anything I think the Scholars setup were among those people with the way they rested their top players, I know they said "surprise value" and everything but call a spade a spade, we know they didn't care much for the concept and if they did they'd have sent their best. Now they're going to be as fresh as they can be and I think they can get right back to being amongst the best in the business. Don't forget they had two of the last six in South Newlandia (at the SN3C and in fact the top two outside Vielfaltig's trio, one of whom nearly got eliminated by Julia Willis but obviously survived that Elephant Gambit which he played very well considering how utterly outside his prep that would have taken him. I think maybe these players just needed a reset, with all the hype around them, and now that's died down a bit I think they can bounce right back."

It probably hasn't helped on some level that Prof. John Roach has been back over the board with the classical time controls in most of the MCC events. He's admitted the player-administrator hybrid role is "draining," but denies it's a problem affecting the team. "There's fine margins always, and our opponents have just been more able to contain us or take chances against us that previously they didn't. We had the surprise value once, and then it passed to the Katzeburg team especially at the ECC, and now we have to prove we are this good all over again. But nobody's been as consistently successful at the ECC as us since we started, so the track record on that front says there's no reason we can't prove that's our level because that's a significant sample size we have there to say it."

Martians at the World Chess Knockouts

After some excellent and some subpar performances in Walbourg, the same three as always have entered the World Chess Knockouts, this time with Ruby Tuesday in tow.

Ziggy Stardust
After a first-round loss in the Chess Battle Royale to Maria Deering, Stardust has been rewarded by once again being paired with Deering. His style is less aggressive than it once was, but he's still drawn in by the allure of tactics, even if they aren't necessarily sound.
Favorite openings: Reti as white, Sicilian Dragon, Benoni Gambit, or Petrov Defense as black.
First opponent: Maria Deering (KAT)

Eleanor Rigby
Finishing tied for fourth in Walbourg. Rigby's solid results in her previous tournaments have lifted her up to fourth in the multiverse, and with excellent results combined with losses for those above her, she's got a chance at the rating-based spot. A defensive player, Rigby will often take draws when there's a chance of a decisive result, and it's mostly paid off - however, she's weaker in shorter time controls, so expect her to go for wins to avoid blitz tiebreakers.
Favorite openings: Slav Defense, Italian Game, French Defense
First opponent: Michael Radley (KYP) or Brian Bowman (KAT)

Johnny B. Goode
Advancing one round beyond Rigby, Goode's third-place finish was only enough to bring him up to 16th overall, showing how tough the competition is. Goode is by far the most attacking player of the four Martians here, but he prefers brute force, compared to Stardust's tactics - he'd much rather be in a position where five moves lead to a good advantage than a sequence of only moves leading to a potential checkmate. Expect fireworks and pawn storms.
Favorite openings: Bird's Opening (against players who he doesn't think have prepped for that), King's Gambit, Dutch Defense, Sicilian Grand Prix
First opponent: Chirpsjibbers Clambanger (PDT)

Ruby Tuesday
In her first international competition since ECC8, Tuesday had to fight for the last spot here, winning in a blitz playoff against David Watts. Luckily for her, she received a bye, but unluckily for her, her first match will be against someone almost certainly better at chess. Tuesday is the one true endgame master of the four Martians, and if she can trade off all the pieces, she will usually be the one pushing for a win, but she's not against some opening trickery either.
Favorite openings: English Opening, Evans Gambit, Caro-Kann, Queen's Gambit Declined, Ruy Lopez
the Martian Independent Republic (the t in the isn't capitalized, it's just the normal word 'the')
a Bowie-themed puppet of New Eestiball with no IC connection
a/k/a Aamathyr
1st: Multiversal Chess Championships Season 1
2nd: ECC13
3rd: ECC8, ECC12 (joint), CoH92
Hosted: ECC13

"Soooo, Malik ... ?"
"Yes Chirpsi?"
"You remember the Chess Battle Royale?"
"Well, yes ... ?"
"You remember that you lost to a player from the Martian Independent Republic?"
"Yes ..."
"Guess who just knocked him out of this tournament?"

The small Pteron had her face squarely in Malik's by this point and was presenting quite the dorkiest, smug grin Malik believed he had ever witnessed before on any living creature. Malik could see where this conversation was going and opted to respond facetiously.

"Oh, I don't know. Felix Tremblay?"
"Nope, try again."
"Anne Christian-Warren?"
"Hehe. Nuh-uh. Want another guess?"
"Not particularly."
"Well, it was me!"

A great percentage of the assorted fibres of Malik's being fought to fire back a dismissive response, or at least provide some sort of justification for the results. It was a different sort of chess in the Battle Royale, he had played below-par chess due to being distracted by the tense political atmosphere in Vielfaltig, maybe Johnny had been distracted by some of the airborne pawns from Jim's game. However, something deep within him knew that it was hardly conducive to the mental wellbeing of the Paradystopi team as a whole to be derogatory of Chirpsijibbers' success. That, or more likely the fact that Miri would give him no end of shit for being an arsehole.

"Ha. Nice one, Chirpsi. One step closer to making the final, eh?"

The Pteron beamed wholeheartedly in such as way as to quell some of the stronger of Malik's curmudgeonly feelings.

"Yeah, though I'm playing the 8th seed next, which is kinda scary, because they're really good, and I don't know if I can beat them, and ..."
"Chirpsi, you've just got to play your own game. I mean, you've already knocked out the ... 15th? ..."
"16th."
"... the 16th seed. How much harder can another 8 places up be?"

Chirpsijibbers gave her wide smile again.

"I mean, at least I'm not Miri. She's got to play Anne Christian-Warren, and she's the number 3 seed, so that's gonna be reeeeally hard."
"Oof."
"I know. But maybe Miri can win too, she demolished Khanyisa van Lundi in her first match. Did you know that? Two-nil. She won both matches, so that's good. How do you think you'll do in your match by the way? Oh, and did you hear about Jim? Did you actually see any of the matches?"

Malik had become accustom to the fact that conversing with Chirpsi often involved such rapid vocal barrages. He found it curious how at odds her chess was from her conversational style. One was almost painfully slow and measured, the other like a hail of machine-gun fire at double velocity.

"I was in my room actually, getting my prep in. Knowing Miri as I do, I'm fairly sure that she'll relish the opportunity to take down one of the heavyweights..."
"I didn't think Ms. Christian-Warren was fat?"
"... that's not what I meant, Chirpsi. I meant that, knowing Miri, she'll be looking forward to playing a top seed. Moreso, the chance to beat one. As for Jim, how did he manage?"
"Lost his first game, drew the second, had seven individual warnings for disruption during the first match, six warnings in the second, I think they were going to disqualify him but no-one wanted to go that far because he looked like he was going to peck the arbiter's face off every time he was told to either stop throwing pieces about the place or squawking at the top of his lungs randomly."
"That's a shame, though, doesn't he have to get to Katzeburg for the Campionato Esportiva anyway?"
"Yeah, I suppose he does. But, wait a minute? Are you thinking that he lost on purpose to be able to get back in time for the football? He wouldn't do that, would he, you think?"
"No. Based on our training matches, I can't imagine he would."

Part 1 - Pre-Match Discussion

"No. Freakin'. Way." Yuli, despite knowing Irene Susanti was Riandera's #1, was shocked that Irene won that match against Margarita Altamiranda.

"I just took down World Number #12!" Irene also had shock on her face. As if she'd never expect to have beaten her at it.

"That's because you had the black pieces."

"Yuli, do you know who my next match is?" Irene knew, but she wanted to quiz Yuli.

"Uhmm... actually I don't know." Yuli gave up on answering.

A long silence sat between them as Haji and Rina entered.

"Felix. Tremblay."

Yuli, Haji and Rina all got a little jump.

Rina was shocked Irene got him again. "Him... AGAIN?"

Irene replied. "Yes. Seriously."

Rina and Yuli were still in disbelief. "Nah!"

Haji knew she was going to lose. "You're gonna lose to World #1!"

Irene blankly stared at Haji. "Don't jinx it, Haji."

Haji laughed. "Whoops. Sorry!"

Yuli thought it was her turn to quiz the other three. "Alright. Do you know who my next match is?"

Haji thought it was another Vielfaltigian. "Noemi?"

"Nuh uh." Next?

Irene thinks she's facing a South Newlandian. "One of the South Newlandians-"

Yuli cut Irene off. "Not even." She turned her head to Rina.

Rina doesn't care about being precise. "Someone below the..."

Yuli is surprised Rina left her sentence on a cliffhanger. "You left it there? Come on, Rina!"

Rina continued. "Top 20."

Yuli didn't reply. A shorter silence sat between the four.

Finally, Yuli spoke up. "Mark. Jensen."

The other three aren't as shocked.

"Hey! You have more luck than me!" Irene jokes about.

Haji looked at the new world chess rankings. "=26. He's not that bad."

Yuli looked at Haji. "Really?"

Haji was about to say "Of course", but he got interrupted by Rina.

"Well. Sure thing you can beat him if you believe, Yuli."

Yuli takes in Rina's advice. "Thanks, Rina."

Rina replies. "No need to thank me."

Irene's stomach growls. "Ugh, I need some food. What should we get?"

Haji doesn't know about what the team should get. "Grill'd. They sell healthy-"

Yuli disagrees with Haji. "No. How about we get boba tea?"

"Yuli. I just said I'm hungry, not thirsty." Irene looks at Yuli, straight in the eye.

Yuli realised. "Oop."

Haji laughs. "Yeah, Yuli!"

Rina is not impressed with Haji's 'joke'. "Alright. How about we get some spaghetti?"

The other three agree. "Yeah," they say in unison, "Let's go!"

Welcome back to the MCC and welcome to the World Chess Knockouts, coming to you from the North Star Convention Center in Vaynorth, Eshialand! Across the next week, a whole lot of chess will be played as everyone is fighting to be the last one standing and earn those precious ranking points before the Road to the World Chess Championship officially starts. With all four of the Jaguar Knights here at an MCC event for the first time, the hopes were certainly high back home...but would they deliver?

Gideon Irosaea
Making his MCC debut, young Irosaea was taking on a fellow debutant in Jessica Page of Vielfaltig, but she has plenty of domestic experience to boot, and so she was not going to be easy to take down across two Classical matchups. In game 1, she ripped poor Gideon to shreds and secured an easy win. Game 2 was certainly closer as Irosaea pushed hard on white, but it wouldn't be enough, and the draw would send Page through and Gideon back to the hotel. He will get more MCC time one day, but right now, it was back to the audience.

Margarita Altamiranda
For Altamiranda, her R1 matchup would be up against Irene Susanti of Riandera, a player who was ranked Top 60 in the MCC and is the domestic #1. What neither player could anticipate was that their matchup was going to go on for a long time. Both Games 1 and 2 were stalemates, draws between two players who clearly knew what they were doing, so we switched formats to Rapid Chess to try and break the tie. Susanti came out best in Game 3 and was on the verge of claiming the overall win, but Altamiranda bounced back in Game 4 to send this to 2nd Tiebraker - this time under Blitz Chess rules. At this greater pace, Susanti would end up coming out on top - securing the 1.5-0.5 win to send the MCC #12 packing in a very entertaining clash, but one that ended in TJUN-ian disappointment.

The Others
Tshering Gyeltshen, the MCC #8, and Anne Christian-Warren, the MCC #3, had byes to this stage and could only watch in sadness as both GI and MA were sent packing. As the last two Knights standing, they will hope to fight on with pride against a dual threat from Paradystopia who upset higher seeds in Round 1. Tshering will get Chirpsijibbers Clambanger, who knocked out Johnny B. Goode, while ACW gets Miri Robertson in what should be a corker after she took out Khanyisa van Lundi.

This one might be close. Buckle up.

Mark Jensen has only been to Eshialand a handful of times before. The former Senior Vice President of Merger Operations for Medium-Size Enterprises and International Affairs at the Bank of Katzeburg meant that he was sometimes drafted in to fly in and out of fellow Esportivan nations to salvage acquisitions and stem the flow when a crisis hit.

He had done this to great effect once before, coming over to Eshialand several years ago to save an investment proposal into a Katzeburgian company from some Eshian backers, but other than that his main knowledge of the country stemmed from when he raced over here a few years earlier to reunite with his father ahead of the dramatic final of the 10th Elephant Chess Cup, in which Mark would watch on from the sidelines as his dad would guide the Ynysgard Chess Club to victory and secure Katzeburg's first ever multiversal chess title.

But as Mark looked around the restaurant of the Snowflake Hotel in Vaynorth, he couldn't help but chuckle to himself just how much things had changed in the couple of years since he was last in Eshialand. He had an Elephant Chess Cup winners medal himself now, having been part of the team which won over in South Newlandia earlier in the year, and had settled into a new life back home on Dragoonspiel, picking up a role at the town council thanks to the backing of his teammate Nora Keller (who had since tried to run for a spot in Katzeburgian Parliament, only to fail to overturn the strong Plaid Dragoonspiel vote in Ynysgard at the recent election), and he had even had the chance to win an individual chess trophy himself, claiming the Grand Casaran over in TJUN-ia prior to the Elephant Chess Cup.

He had also been forced into the background in recent months following that win in South Newlandia, as the fervour around Klaus Rothbauer reached its limit ahead of the ECC final. Mark stepped up and took action then, tipping off the South Newlandian Witness Protection Scheme as to the need to include Klaus following a credible threat on his life by Jack Eulemann and his associates, but he wasn't proud of his actions, truth be told.

As he looked down at his drink and swirled it in contemplation, he replayed the last few months in his head. The team touched down back home in Katzeburg following the ECC win without Klaus, as he had been picked up by the South Newlandian Police in the immediate aftermath of the final; Mark wasn't even sure Klaus had time to gather his things from the Ivory Crown Hotel.

It made for an uncomfortable trip back home - first the flight from South Newlandia to Katzeburg, something Mark had less than favourable experiences about given his turbulence on that route a few years earlier, then the long travel from Katzestadt back to Blackmouth before catching a ferry across to Ynysgard, all playing out in almost total silence between the four remaining members of the Ynysgard Chess Club. In fact, the only speech Mark remembers at all during the trip back between the four was a single question, quietly spoken by Kristine Powell during the ferry ride from Blackmouth to Ynysgard.

"Did we do the right thing?"

Nobody responded; the question lingered in the air like the faint fishy smell Klaus would often leave at the chessboard following an appearance.

All four went their separate ways once getting off the ferry in Ynysgard; Kristine started packing for a move to the mainland as part of her further studies, while Nora turned all her energy into the election campaign as her way of keeping safe by the power of public attention, while Emilia went straight out and called in all her annual leave and relocated somewhere else on the island.

As for Mark? He just went back to work at the council, changing nothing from his daily routine except for the culling of all chess and public appearances where possible. He faded into the background, a simple character in the daily life of Ynysgard.

So when Emilia called him out of the blue the week before touching down in Eshialand, Mark's heart leapt in panic. Something had to have caused this now. Something which would of course put him back in the square aim of those forces looking to send a message to Klaus.

Mark turned his head up from his drink and looked at the other end of his table. Across from him sat Emilia Ziegler, the once fearless leader of the Ynysgard Chess Club, pouring over documents and jotting down notes in her notepad. She has always been the one to prepare, Mark thought. But this is likely not going to be about her opponent in the next round.

"Emilia?" Mark piped up. She didn't look up from her papers, instead just grunting in a willingness to accept whatever question Mark was going to send her way next. "What is our plan here?"

Emilia stopped writing something for a moment and turned her head up towards Mark. "We just need to put in a good showing here."

"But why? What good does bringing us out to Eshialand do for any of this? I am, and was, willing to trust you when you called me on this, but I need something to go on at the very least!"

Emilia studied the man in front of her, noting the sparks of panic which occasionally danced across Mark's eyes, and closed her notepad before sitting up in a manner not too dissimilar from a teacher about to showcase the best examples of etiquette.

"You are right," she said. "I've not clued you in on any of this and that's not fair. I think we have a way to flush out Eulemann and end this once and for all."

"What do you mean we?"

"Me and Josef Brand."

The name sparked some minor recognition in Mark's head, but he couldn't place it. "I'm sorry, who?"

"Josef Brand," Emilia repeated. "He's the Head of Communications at a law firm, Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant. He also used to be at the Katzeburg Football Federation?"

"Wait... Was he the guy who absolutely melted down on TV a few years ago?"

"Yep."

"And he's going to help us?"

"Yep."

"I'm sorry, I just don't see how."

Emilia took a deep breath in. She had to make this make sense for Mark no matter what; he would be crucial to what could be about to come.

"Right, so his firm are one of the founders and key sponsors of the new Katzeburgian Chess League, of which there's going to be a team in Ynysgard."

"So that would explain the sports agents trying to blow up my phone as of late. But what does that have to do with Klaus?"

"I've made an agreement with Josef Brand. We'll take part in this league for Ynysgard if we can use it as a way to flush out Eulemann and take him down. That way Klaus can come home."

"There's no way this will work. I mean, can we even trust this Brand fellow?"

Emilia paused and glanced at the ground. "Look, I don't know. The only people I trust right now is the people of the Ynysgard Chess Club. But he managed to track me down and this is the deal we struck. I think he's not in league with them, but he could be our way to fight back."

Mark nodded slowly, trying to piece together everything in his mind in a way which would make sense. Even if Josef was willing to help, none of it connected together.

"Ok," he said at last. "Let's assume he's on our side. Why are we here?"

"Well, we need to generate some hype for the new league of course," Emilia said. "What better way to do so then by us reappearing on the multiversal circuit and smashing it? If we put in a good performance here in Eshialand at this and then the actual championship qualifier itself, we'll be big news and so will the new Ynysgard league team."

"...And I imagine that a team with some strong reputational pull because of the players could secure some solid sponsorship," Mark said, rolling his hands and beginning to understand how the pieces fit together.

"And apparently, there are a couple of organisations owned by one Jack Eulemann who will be looped into the league thanks to their part-ownership of the founding law firm," Emilia said, nodding her head.

"Which may be a way in..." Mark said, pausing to think before nodding his head. "There may actually be something here."

Emilia leant back in her chair and threw her arms up in celebration. He had got it. Mark started to feel a smile creep across his face, something which had been quite rare in recent months since getting home from South Newlandia.

"Well then, I guess Yuli and Malik are not even going to know what hit them," he said, picking up his drink once more. They had work to do.

The Scholars are... back? Maybe?

This pure knockout format makes it hard to tell, but two of the three Kytlerian players in the opening round survived it, which combined with the bye for John Roach means there will be at least reasonable representation for the famed University of Zube chess factory for at least one more round. Yay?

The one who missed out was inevitably Michael Radley, who may just be that bit undercooked or maybe just isn't as good as he's been hyped to be. Then again, he also had a brutal opening draw against Brian Bowman from Katzeburg, and didn't exactly acquit himself terribly in it - playing out a high-quality draw as white before being caught surprised when Bowman got the preferred pieces and dropped the Mengarini (2. a3) to which Radley's reply of 2...d5 quickly dragged the game into unfamiliar territory after 3. exd5 Qxd5 4. Nf3, delaying the Nc3 move to kick the queen. When both queenside knights did then move immediately afterwards, Radley's decision not to fully retreat the queen but to force check with Qe6+ wasn't loved by the engines, and after 6. Be2 Nf6 Bowman had a clear edge that he was able to successfully convert.

"I was expecting the c3 reply as the anti-Sicilian so a3 was not expected, and clearly that was a prepared sideline that he made work well precisely because I didn't see it coming," Radley admitted later. "He deserved to win because he played both games very well."

The same could be said of Stijn van Dijk, who stole a march on Rianderan Catarina Ramos after she tried to break his penchant for big pawn centres with the Budapest Gambit 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 only to find him entirely prepared for the move, ending up with the better of the subsequent Alekhine variation of this line. "Quite a few of the Margaret Institute players have tried it against me because they know about me liking to have a strong centre and pawn structure," noted van Dijk. "And that means I've known how to respond to it and I think some people still think I won't handle it even though I've proven I can." A bloodless draw in the second game with colours reversed was all van Dijk needed and it is exactly what he got, sending him through to a showdown with a Valentian player who has more names than there are players above her in the rankings; oddly enough, that section of the draw sees John Roach paired with a fellow Valentian, who knocked out a Paradystopian penguin known only as "Jim." Apparently the literal big-name player showed it against the literal small-name player. Or maybe Jim just waddled off in a huff. The weather was less frigid than usual for Vaynorth at this time of year, so maybe that was the problem...

The heat was on in the metaphorical sense for Julia Willis, who exchanged three tense draws - two in classical, one in rapid - with Jacenty Kamiński before knocking out the fifth-placed finisher at the Grand Casaran with an unexpected win with the black pieces. She set this up by charging her bishop to Bb4 after 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 and then trading it for a knight by playing 3... Nc6!?, a move that the North Polish Union player clearly wasn't anticipating; Willis was able to gain an advantage from the unusual setup against a player who is usually a very solid defender but ultimately succumbed to time pressure. "I knew that as black he'd defend any normal play very well," Willis acknowledged. "Fortunately, against something less normal but still sound, he chewed up the clock and then nobody can defend very well, not even him. So I'm very pleased with that." She gets Noemi Etienne of Vielfaltig next. "That will be a superb contest. I'm sure people will expect Noemi to win but I'm also sure she didn't want to be facing me this early."

It was another tournament, and Ziggy Stardust was simply hoping to finish in the top half. 6th out of 10 in his group at the SNC3, 6.5/13 in the GCC, and knocked out in the first round against Maria Deering at the Chess Battle Royale - the same person who he'd have to face now. Ah well, just a chance for revenge, he thought.

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2
A bit of a surprise, but he knew the Tarrasch variation well enough. Things would be fine, he wasn't out of prep.

3... c5 4. exd5 exd5 5. Ngf3 Nc6 6. Bb5 Qe7+ 7. Be2 cxd4
It was a sideline, yes, but it worked, and if Deering wasn't prepared for this line, he might be able to press her on time. He saw the look of recognition in her eyes, however, and knew it hadn't worked.

8. O-O Qc7 9. Nb3 Bd6 10. Nbxd4 a6 11. b3
Stardust thought his king was safe - he was wrong, but he bluffed to Deering well enough that she didn't press the issue. Things were fine.

11. Nge7 12. Bb2 O-O 13. Nxc6 bxc6 14. c4 Be6 15. Qc2 dxc4 16. Bxc4 Bxc4 17. Qxc4 Rfb8
More passive play, sitting at his table and watching other players get up as some games quickly ended. Stardust was being pressed, but he wasn't pressing back. Hopefully, he could defend.

18. h3 Rb5 19. Rac1 Rc8 20. Rfd1 Ng6 21. Nd4 Rb6 22. Ne6!!
Oh no. That was what he hadn't accounted for. Ziggy sat there and thought and thought, but there wasn't much to do. The attack was coming in, and he couldn't easily stop it. He couldn't take the knight, because then there was Qxe6+! and he was losing a pawn, then a piece, then the game. Twirling a bishop in his left hand, he spent an hour on a response, and he still wasn't happy with it.

22... Qb8 23. Ng5 Rb7 24. Qg4 Bf4 25. Rc4 Rb5??
He was spending almost 10 minutes on every move now, desperately trying to survive, and there was nothing there. The lack of increment was really getting to him, and as he continued to fidget, he blundered, hanging his bishop, as if 26. Rxf4 Nxf4, there's 27. Nxf7!!, threatening checkmate with no easy way of stopping it, with 27... Ng6 met with 28. Nh6+!!, and no matter which way Black's king goes, it's either blockaded in the corner or chased out into the open, with mate soon to follow. Stardust saw all of this, but only after he made the move, and he himself got up from the table, not able to watch as his position got ripped apart.

26. Nxf7?!
But it didn't happen immediately. Deering didn't find the capture, and although she did win a pawn (the knight cannot be captured due to Rd7+ with a windmill mate on the way) she didn't win the game on the spot. It took a couple looks at the position for Stardust to be sure he still had a chance.

26... Re8 27. g3 Qc8
He promptly squandered those chances. Bxg3 seemed the same in value to him, but the trades there would lead to an endgame that has a lot of chances for White to lose their advantage. Stardust's mind was racing, trying to recoup lost material, but the pieces were flying off the board, and there was nothing to do.

28. Rxf4 Qxg4 29. Rxg4 Kxf7 30. Rd7+ Re7 31. Rxe7+ Kxe7 32. Bxg7
All of the heavy pieces were traded off, leaving Ziggy with just a rook, a knight, and three pawns, as he lost a second pawn, his king drawn away from g7. There was nothing he could do, and he knew it, holding his head in his hands.

32... Ra5 33. a4 Rc5 34. Rb4 Ke6 35. Kg2 h4 36. Rc4 Rxc4 37. bxc4 Kd6 38. f4 1-0
Stardust tried to at least keep the rooks on the board, but he was forced to trade them on the c-file, and when he was forced into passivity by Deering's powerful bishop and pawns, he resigned. Yes, he had a game as white, but to be honest, it felt like a foregone conclusion at this point.

The return game had boring play from both sides, and when Stardust forced perpetual check in a position he had no chance of winning, he also knocked himself out of the tournament - and, by extension, anything related to the Multiversal Chess Championships.

As he sat in his hotel room, booking his way back home, there was a decision he had to make. From now on, he said to himself, he would be yielding Board 1 in all international competitions to Eleanor Rigby, maybe even board 2 to Johnny B. Goode. They'd both proven themselves to be better chess players than him (although Goode was also knocked out in round 1 here, he'd finished 3rd in Walbourg), and although he might be a better leader, it was still the quality of his chess that mattered.

He was no longer the MIR's star man.

Part 1 – Penguin Flip Out. A Russian and a Polish played each other in chess - a match that is perceived awkward at first.

Eveline Valeria Annalise Tiêu Xuân Ngọc: You know, if there is one thing I will say, is that in these tournaments, you never know what to expect. There’s most likely something in my language, but I cannot remember it right now. Ah well! So anyway, getting to this match. To be clear first and foremost, I am absolutely fine with other species in these tournaments. I mean, we Valentians are also quite a deviation from normal humans of a lot of the other worlds. That, and it is not right to be not fine with other species, of course! Haha, anyway, it was not as surprising that I met this little penguin sitting across me. A large lady sitting on the floor – that’s me… and then there was a penguin across the table. Okay, it’s most definitely sapient if it is able to make it here and to a chess tournament. That was my first thought, at least. And no no, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t doubt his ability to play, and the first few moves were also perfectly valid and legal. The moves he did were complemented by… what I can assume is this. This is the sound that he made. Adorable, though! I played my hyper-aggressive method like usual, making my own moves.

And then, well, that happened. I was not sure as to if he was frustrated with me taking piece after piece from him, or he does not know how to play the game in the first place. He started screaming even louder, followed by pecking the chessboard and flailing the pieces all over the place! We were definitely quite a scene, and it took the officials a little bit of time to get him under control. Officials, and his folks, presumably. There were apologies sent my way, but I was not exactly bothered by that. In fact, the air of seriousness pierced by the sheer absurdity and no one getting hurt? I can absolutely live with that. I didn’t react solely because I was a little startled and trying to process.

Said cause included Jim – as he is called – trying to approach me and tried to hit my shin with his little flippers. It wasn’t that forceful and I think he wanted my attention, so I gave it to him and tried to get both the officials and his folks to give me a little bit of distance. I looked down at him and might have stroked his head a little bit, and that seemed to have calmed him down a little bit more. I certainly did not want to come up and jump to conclusions, but I would really like to believe that this was not like that penguin and the cardboard cutout in a zoo. The one not in Valentine Z, but in a few other worlds that I have visited. The poor little penguin had a tragic backstory about his family and group, and then he fell in love with a cardboard cutout of an anthropomorphic penguin in this show called “Kemono Friends”. Again, again, I am not implying that Jim and I are in this same exact fate; maybe he was just curious about me and hey, I can live with that. Valentians are big boys, girls, and of the in-between – we, the big and gentle folks that are a curiosity for a lot of people (and now animals). So… overall, an interesting match, for sure!

Vice Foresittend Jolyn Maxine Caulfield Moira “Неуловимая, Женщина-шпион” Marlene Wendy Lucille Lapis Jill Khorosheva Vin. Zolina łnt. Natasha Vasilisa Helen Ceeta Tescelyn Maximovna: Oh dear, this is one of those times, huh. I have to duel and was up against my own teammate, and a difficult one at that. Adriana! I already felt bad that I was going to be matched up against her, despite the fact that Adriana has told me that it is fine and that she’ll not take it personally or anything of that sort. She’s basically a big teddy bear, so to speak. Hm… technically a big metal robot but with a warm heart and feelings underneath it all. “It’s all right! We will do our best and hey, either way, one of us are going to make it in!” Which… is actually a good point! It will not matter whether I win or lose, one of us will still be going to the next bracket and matches. With the handshakes and sitting on floors, we then start.

It was over only at the 89th minute. I was expecting the two of us to be clocked out and then the judges determining by another method. Adriana was very good at anticipating what I was doing or was going to do, and she would counter that effectively. I was running my pieces across the board a lot of times, waiting for that perfect chance to get the pieces in the order that I needed. I am talking in very broad terms because, well, because I can! So I did it in the end of Day 2, poor Adriana got eliminated. She certainly didn’t seem to mind and in fact offered me hug and good luck for the next match-up. She’s basically like Wojtek the Bear. I wish it was better for her and that I wish I got eliminated instead of her, but alas, this is the way things have went, and she didn’t give me an easy win, either. Don’t worry, Adriana – I will do my best and I hope to make sure that your loss is not going to be in vain. I will try!

The first round was a rocky affair for the North Polish delegation that had traveled to Eshialand. Of the three players active, only Kristian Theiss survived to the next round, and even he had to go all the way to the blitz tiebreaks with Prince Khatoon.

Neither of the losing players played particularly interesting matches. The famously drawish Jacenty Kamiński played the similarly-passive Julia Willis to three consecutive draws before slipping up in the final rapid tiebreak and allowing Willis to squeeze out the full point and a visit to Round 2. The aging Klaus Moeller fell victim to an ugly blunder in Game 1 against hometown player Mary Nerata and was unable to draw blood from the stone of his opponent's excellent defensive play in Game 2.

The excitement took place in the 6-game match between Kristian Theiss and Prince Khatoon that only saw a single draw as the match pitted Theiss' speculative attacking style against Khatoon's preference for defense. The showdown between teenage phenom Theiss and 22-year-old Khatoon (as the youngest player from South Newlandia) saw the pair trade wins through the classical and rapid games before drawing the first blitz tiebreaker. With a win for either player putting the victor through, stakes were at their highest as we look at the final blitz game between the pair.

OOC: The following game was played by the individual behind this nation at an over-the-board tournament in late July. Annotations are my own with analysis assistance from Stockfish 16.

1. d4 c5 A slightly offbeat opener but not a speculative one by any means; accepting the pawn damages White's center pawn structure and the pawn is easily regained, declining claims space but White risks overextending and ending up in an unsafe position. At this late stage in the match and at shorter time controls Khatoon is likely hoping that Theiss will play over-aggressively allowing Khatoon to capitalize on inaccurate play as had already happened in several games eariler in the match. 2. d5 Nf6 3. c4 d6 4. Nc3 g6 5. e4 Bg7 6. Bd3 O-O 7. Nge2 e6 8. Bg5 Re8 9. h4!?

Having reached a fairly standard King's Indian position Theiss, true to form, unleashes a speculative flank attack. The typical ideas here are for White to either castle or else exchange in the center with 9. dxe6, which achieves a Maróczy Bind situation after 9... Bxe6. 9... Qb6 10. Qd2 exd5 11. cxd5 Nbd7 12. O-O-O? Consistent with his 9th move, Theiss maintains a rook on the h-file. Unfortunately, this move actually means White ends up worse, as the weakened c4-, d3- and f2-squares give Black ideas of ...Ne5 and/or ...N(f)g4, after which Black's well-placed knights are a thorn in White's position. 12... Ne5 13. Bxf6 Bxf6 14. Bb5 Re7 15. Qf4 Bg7 16. h5 a6 17. Qh4?? Qc7??
Image

A regrettable case of double chess-blindness. 17. Qh4 appears to be a strong intermezzo, threatening the Re7, but Black refutes it with 17... g5! 18. Qxg5 f6 19. Qg3 axb5 picking up a bishop for a pawn. In missing the refutation, Khatoon allows Theiss to escape with his light-squared bishop and essentially returns the position to an equal one, ceding any pressure that was being exerted on the White king. 18. Ba4 Bh6+ 19. Kb1 g5 20.Qg3 f6 21. f4 Nf7?! Not strictly wrong but needlessly constrictive. After ...Ng4 the knight is difficult to dislodge from an advanced position and hinders the maneuverability of White's pieces 22. Rdf1 b5 23. Bc2 Qd7 24. fxg5 fxg5 25. Nf4?
Image

A serious miscalculation. After gaining momentum after the previous several moves and earning a slightly advantageous position, White needed to keep the pressure on with the pawn sacrifice of 25. e5!, after which Black must tie himself into knots in order to avoid allowing a fatal Ne4-Nf6+ maneuver. In allowing Khatoon to exchange queens while still hindering his own access to the e4-square and b1-h7 diagonal, Theiss loses his advantage, although the position remains sharp. 25... Qg4 26. Qxg4 Bxg4 27. Ng6 hxg6 28. hxg6 Ne5 29. Rxh6 Rg7 30. Rfh1 Nxg6?? The losing blunder; as Theiss demonstrates, the knight cannot defend the h8-square. Khatoon could maintained a mostly equal although slightly worse endgame with 30... Kf8 31. Rh8+ Rg8 31. e5! dxe5 31. Bxg6 1-0 Despite its speculative nature, the White flank attack that began on move 9 ultimately succeeds as the Black position collapses faced with the inevitability of Rh8+, pinning and winning Black's Ra8 with no compensation. After six games in the opening match of the World Chess Knockouts, Theiss at last secures victory to advance onwards.
Image

With the win, Theiss moved on to play countryman Miefodij Ihnatjew in the next mini-match, the only one in the Round featuring a duel between countrymen. Far from the grueling tiebreaks of Round 1, Theiss struck early with a Black win in game 1, in which a middlegame miscalculation from Ihnatjew gave Theiss a passed queen side pawn that was unable to be stopped. Theiss would hold a draw in game 2 to advance straight through to Round 3 without the need for tiebreaks.

Theiss will move on to face Rowena Sowers, the champion of the Chess Battle Royale and surely one of the players currently in the best form in the world right now. With the field narrowing, he will have to keep looking to advance as his country's sole remaining representative.

For the third time, Miri took her seat opposite the multiverse's third ranked player, Anne Christian-Warren hoping her opponent's rapid game wasn't as strong as her classical. Both players were presenting an air of confidence, though after a pair of long-winded and hard fought draws, both were certainly feeling the strain.

From the gallery, Malik attempted to eat an apple quietly. He was feeling the strain from missing breakfast as he had been up since before the two female members of the Paradystopi chess delegation in the hope of preparing some last minute cramming materials for Miri and Chirpsi. Given that both were starting their set of rapid games as black, he saw it as imperative that both of the girls got a strong start. Chirpsi had been immensely grateful for this, Miri would've rather that Malik had made her breakfast instead than waking her with some in-depth mid-game study to do with capitalising pawn positioning. However, she knew what her brother was like, and given a choice between a decent meal or solving tricky mate-in-twenty-moves puzzles, Malik would take the puzzles every time.

1. d4

"If she opens with d4, bring out your knight."

Malik's words from earlier whilst she had been trying to enjoy some cereal and yoghurt echoed in Miri's head.

1. ... c5
2. dxc5 e6
3. e4

Miri could almost feel Malik squirming in his seat as she chose to completely disregard the preparation he had done on her behalf. Maybe attempting to spite one's brother during a high-stakes chess game against a very strong opponent wasn't the best strategy, but Miri's plan was to try and be unpredictable. Assuming that Anne had also done her research on Miri, Malik's prep could potentially lead her down a path Anne was ready for.

3. ... Bxc5
4. Nc3 Ne7

Miri glanced up at Malik as she finally brought a knight off it's starting square. She could instantly read in his angst-ridden glare that he was screaming in his head that she should've moved the other knight. Anne had played a passive knight move with Nc3, she was going to reciprocate. Miri did however pick up on a beat's pause in Anne's play. No major rethinking time, just a second to demonstrate that she hadn't expected Ne7.

5. Na4

Curious.

5. ... Bb4+
6. c3 Ba5
7. b4 Bc5

Anne Christian-Warren really wanted Miri's bishop out of the way and Miri couldn't quite see if there was anything more to it. It had resulted in her being crammed in at the back somewhat, but white's queen side was looking a little dodgy. To her, the position was looking pretty even, which actually, for black, is a good thing.

8. Bd3

Miri stopped herself for a quick think and tried not to let the intrusive thoughts tell her that it might've been easier to follow Malik's gameplan. Everything just seemed a little ... bland? Were both players sizing each other up. It was also very possible that Anne was trying to box Miri in and let the aggressive Paradystopi dig her own grave in trying to fight her way out.

8. ... d5
9. Qe2 Ng6
10. Nf3 0-0

She resisted her urge to try and find some way of adding pressure to the centre and castled. She genuinely thought she could feel Malik's sigh of relief.

11. h4 Nc6
12. Bg5(?)

Anne thrust her bishop forward to attack Miri's queen but something didn't sit right. Surely Miri could just repel the bishop with her pawn? Had they screwed up? Surely not. But ...

12. ... f6
13. Be3 Nge5
14. Bc2

Miri could feel the momentum had gently shifted. Tempo was now on her side and she needed to make it count.

14. ... dxe4

Blast open the centre with her queen on an open file.

15. Nd4(?) Nd3+

It didn't take a psychologist to see that Anne Christian-Warren was shaken. There was every possibility that she knew she had messed up and was now flustered and messing up with the damage limitation.

16. Kf1 Nxd4
17. cxd4 f5
18. Bxd3 exd3
19. Qxd3

The material stood even, but the advantage lay clearly with black. In this situation Malik would've consolidated his position and look to take the advantage into the endgame, Miri however, continued the attack.

19. ... f4
20. Bd2 e5
21. Qb3+ Kh8
22. Re1 Qxd4

The TJUN-ian paused to calculate. Miri took the chance to do likewise. If she could get her rook on a8 into the middle, white's position looked bleak. Doing so without white giving white time to gain a foothold was no easy task.

23. Bc3 Qd8
24. Nc5 Bf5
25. Nxb7 Qe7
26. Qc4 Rac8

The rook was mobilised and sitting in line with white's queen, waiting to be unleashed with a bishop move. White had already seen this though.

27. Nc5 Bd6
28. Qe2

Anne Christian-Warren could see her time slowly ebbing away, along with the game it seemed. Miri was now solely focused on bringing this game to a black victory.

28. ... e4

Continuing the pawn march upon the white king and queen's position.

29. Bd4 Rce8
30. Kg1 h6

Miri was nearly ready to make her final assault. Anne was trying her damnedest to prevent that from happening.

31. Qb2 e3

Seeing white's queen eyeing up the diagonal to the black king, Miri sent her pawn into the fray in the hope of crushing the white king's position.

32. f3

White however, closed the position and Miri cursed herself internally for overlooking it.

32. ... Kh7
33. Qc3 h5
34. Qc4 Rc8
35. Qd5 Rcd8

Miri, again channelled Malik. She could see the white queen looking for a way to cause trouble and rather than simply proceeding to attack in ignorance of it as she normally would, she opted for the more tactically sound approach. There was also the fact that white had few options without watching their game crumble around them.

36. Qc4 Rfe8
37. Qb5 Be5

With the queen now behind the knight, Miri took her opportunity to challenge the bishop.

38. Nb3 Qf6
39. Bxe5 Rxe5
40. Qe2 Qg6

The TJUN-ian looked at the position, head in hands, with eyes flitting back and forth to the clock.

After letting nearly a minute pass, she offered her hand and the victory to Miri. All she had to do now was not lose as white and she'd be in the round of 16.

1. d4 c5 2. dxc5 e6 3. e4 Bxc5 4. Nc3 Ne7 5. Na4 Bb4+ 6. c3 Ba5 7. b4 Bc7 8. Bd3 d5 9. Qe2 Ng6 10. Nf3 O-O 11. h4 Nc6 12. Bg5 f6 13. Be3 Nge5 14. Bc2 dxe4 15. Nd4 Nd3+ 16. Kf1 Nxd4 17. cxd4 f5 18. For a master plan which relied on Mark Jensen and Emilia Ziegler putting in a good showing in Eshialand to draw attention to their exploits as a way to seek sponsorship for their Ynysgard league side, the pair instead found themselves sitting in the grand restaurant at Vaynorth's Snowflake Hotel frantically re-considering their plans ahead of the Round of 16.

Emilia had bowed out, sent packing after falling to Malik Robertson from Paradystopia, an Esportivan nation quickly gaining prowess on the multiversal scene after spending time away from international engagements, while Mark did managed to secure a spot in the final 16 - knocking out Riandera's Sri Nyoiman Yuli to book a matchup against another of Yuli's compatriots in Irene Susanti.

Ziegler was the big dismissal from the Katzeburgian delegation in the second round alongside Maria Deering, and while there are still a total of four Katzeburgians in the final 16; only Mark is the last one standing with knowledge of the plan to sort out the sorrid mess which has engulfed the Ynysgard Chess Club in recent months.

"I've ruined this," Emilia said as she tried to flag down a passing waiter to try and secure another drink. "I've failed Klaus and I've failed you Mark."

Mark took a moment to study Emilia in her current state. She looked broken; the schoolteacher once so full of life and positivity seemingly left the building some time ago, replaced with a growing parasitic husk of someone driven to the edge to try and support their friend. She was drinking heavier than usual, staring at the floor as if she barely had the strength to lift her head and look at Mark directly.

"You've not failed anyone," Mark said, reaching out a hand to rest gently on Emilia's forearm. "I'm still here and we've still got hope until it's gone. You're forgetting we're both in the World Qualifier already thanks to our runs in TJUN-ia."

"But what if it's too late by then?" Emilia panned. "We have no idea how Klaus is or even where he is - Wait, what if this already has all been for nothing?"

"We can't know that," Mark calmly said, lightly tapping his hand on Emilia's arm as if to reassure. "We stick to the plan and our course of action; it's the best way forward for us. Besides, the fact you are out now means you have one less thing to focus on, which could prove to be a bit of an advantage for us."

Emilia raised her head, confusion stretching across her tired face. "What do you mean?"

"Well," Mark said, leaning back and picking up his glass, "The way I see things we're the only ones in on this plan outside of our acquaintance Josef over in Katzestadt. We need someone here banging the drum about us to try and draw in sponsors - At least for the moment that can't be me because I need to focus on keeping us in the bracket. This could be where you really make a difference, Em."

Emilia rubbed her hand over her face in contemplation, and then slapped the table in defiance. "That's a good point. How can I help?"

"I've got some business contacts from my time over at the Bank of Katzeburg who I think may be amenable to a bit of a sponsorship meeting for us while we are over here - some Katzeburgian, but mostly wider Esportivan contacts. I think it's those people we hit first."

"But surely we want to drag Eulemann to the table?" Emilia said, flicking open her trusty notepad. "How would arranging these meetings help us in that way?"

"We don't actually want them to sign on and provide sponsorship to the team," Mark said. "We just need the word to get out. If the wider league and Eulemann see that little ol' Ynysgard is circling some huge businesses, then with some clever messaging we could proactively reach out to a select few Katzeburgian businesses, Eulemann's being one of them, saying we'd rather keep the barins within the country and invite them to sponsor us."

"And then we rig the process so we end up signing with Eulemann, bringing the whole thing into the light."

"Exactly. We're taking a bit of a gamble here that his ego and desire to keep tabs on us in the hopes it leads him to Klaus means he will bite, but I think this is our best option." Mark paused, as if something else had popped into his head, and he leant back with an ever-increasing frown.

"What is it?" Emilia asked.

"Well, assuming everything goes to plan here - there's a chance that once this is all revealed, any league team we end up playing for will see a large chunk of it's funding pulled out from underneath it. After all, if we bait Eulemann into major sponsor status, losing those barins could kill the team before we even begin."

"I see."

"If we are to go down this route, we have to assume that if this comes off and we can bring Klaus home and box off Eulemann, it may spell the end of any Ynysgard team in this new league and maybe even the Chess Club itself, assuming the debts would flow onto us as quasi-owners as per the agreement struck with Josef."

"Should we bring him into this?" Emilia asked, her gaze returning to the middle of the small round table her and Mark sat the opposite ends of, the area littered with glasses and the remains of their evening meal as she contemplated the branching paths ahead of her.

"It's too early to say - We don't want to give him the impression that we're about to pilot one of the teams directly into the side of a mountain and force him to step in and try and stop it, not yet anyway."

Mark drummed his fingers against the table, deep in thought, before finally he broke the expanding silence, leaning forward to shut off the outside world from what was about to follow.

"Em," he said quietly. "Is it going to be worth it if we go down this path? This could ruin lives, not just our own, but the people on Ynysgard who are expecting a top flight team to play on the island. We could be torching our own homes here."

Emilia nodded, before returning her gaze to Mark, her look now steeled by the weight of her decision. "As you said, it's our best option. I'd like to think if we were on the other side, Klaus would be doing his best to help bring us home. To me, that's worth the risk."

Mark reciprocated the nod and leant back in his chair once more. "I'm not sure Klaus would have something this destructive up his sleeve, but then again, he always was the more aggressive player out of the two of us. Let's make our move then." Reaching into his pocket, Mark pulled out his phone and started to scroll through his contacts, point them out to Emilia as she jotted down notes.

"I'll give these three a ring now and try and set up a meeting for after the Round of 16 clash with Irene. Hopefully I'll still be in with a chance at winning it all by that point, but we just need news to leak back to Katzeburgian press that we are holding meetings over here."

"Josef might be able to help us on that front," Emilia said. "We might just have to position it with him as a way of bringing in external investment into the league."

Across the crowded restaurant sat another group of Katzeburgians, that of the four members making up the Waldstein Chess Club. Brian Bowman, Rowena Sowards, and Tina Mathieson were all working on their evening meals after booking a ticket to the final 16, while Maria Deering was sitting at the table messaging her parents ahead of an early flight back to Katzeburg following her elimination.

"Do you ever wonder what they talk about over there?" Brian asked the table, nodding his head sidewards to act as a pointer to Mark and Emilia.

"Why should we care," Rowena said before putting down her fork to pick up her cup. "We're not here to make friends, Brian. You should know that."

"We are all Katzeburgians though, Rowena," Tina said as she stabbed at her food. "With this new league in the pipeline, they could end up being our teammates - it wouldn't hurt to get to know them a little."

"The only way they'll be my teammate is if something goes horrendously wrong in my career," snorted Rowena. "They'll never be welcomed at Waldstein."

Brian shifted in his seat at the mention of the Waldstein team. He had heard through the grapevine that Rowena had already secured a position with the upstart Warriors for the new league, but his phone was yet to ring with an offer to join her. Despite being the head of the local Chess Club, he found himself on the outside looking in for now.

"Let's just get through the next round okay? We've still got a World Qualifier spot to play for, and we should be having at least as many of us from Waldstein there as Ynysgardians," Brian said.

"Speak for yourself, Brian," Rowena said before taking a large gulp from her cup. "I've done my part, it can either be you or Tina at this point."

Tina chuckled. "There's no way it will be me at the rate I'm going," she said. "Especially given how many swings it took me to get past Mary in that last round!"

"Then the pressure's on you, Brian," Rowena said, staring straight into the Waldstein Chess Club leader's eyes. "Don't fuck it up."

Brian narrowed his eyes and returned the stare with a fierce volley of his own. "That's certainly not the aim." Before muttering to himself, "At least not yet anyway."

Part 2 - The Last Hope, Again
After Irene won against Felix...

Irene turns around to see the other Rianderans that have been eliminated. "Hah! I won that!"

"Woman, you just took down World #1!" Haji is impressed.

Rina nods. "Geez. At the CBR, he took you down. But here, you took him down."

Irene grabs a piece of paper she had in her pocket. "I knew his weaknesses. And I used them against him."

The paper showed a list of who she defeated, and their weaknesses.

Irene evilly chuckles, whilst giving a wicked look to Haji and Rina.

"Uhm, Irene?" A voice calls from her back.

"Yuli." Irene shakes her head at her.

"Now that I'm out..." Yuli walks closer to Haji and Rina.

The three turn their heads at Irene. "We all rely on you to get the victory." They form a triangle, with her in the middle.

Irene knows what they want, but is confused on what's going on. "What in the name of sacrificial is this?"

The triangle 'deforms' as the three move in different spots. "You could defeat the man who defeated me." Yuli makes it clear.

Irene knows it's not 'easy', but acts sarcastically. "Oh, of course! Uhm..."

Haji appears from behind. "If you defeated World #1, then we're sure you can defeat #T-26."

Irene sighs.

Rina appears from the front. "Believe, and you'll achieve."

Irene can hear many voices in her mind.

"Win it... or fail."

"You should be able to defeat him, if you took down Felix."

"It's all good if you lose. At least you'll rank higher."

As soon as the third voice came, Yuli changed the line up. "Even if you lose, you'll still rank higher."

Haji and Rina nod.

Irene smiled. "Sorry, but I have work to do."

Rina was confused what her teammate meant. "What work?"

The other three blankly stare at Rina, straight in the eye.

Haji becomes confused on how Rina doesn't know what Irene's talking about. "How could you not know?"

Rina realises. "Oh, sorry! My bad."

Irene waves goodbye, as she heads to the next room.

---

Irene finds a picture of Mark on her phone. "Tonight - You're. Going. D.O.W.N. Down you go!"

There are a lot of places for eyes to dart in a tournament like this one, but one of the tables to follow was definitely the one on which Noemi Etienne and Julia Willis locked horns over two days of classical carnage. While Etienne probably feels the same way as Willis about fellow Vielfaltigian star Felix Tremblay, the bad blood left after his defeat of an Elephant Gambit-attempting Willis earlier in this inaugural MCC cycle couldn't not spill over in some way to his compatriot. "Claiming victory over someone from that program meant something to me," Willis admitted, "even if it was one of his other enemies. He has a lot of them, after all."

Etienne got the white pieces to start, but was kept at bay by solid defensive play from Willis, who may be best known for her consistent 1. Nf3 openings as white but should really be best regarded for her adaptability; this is, indeed, why 1. Nf3 is her habitual opening, for its inherent flexibility sets it up to transpose to almost anything and shifts more of the process of deciding the rules of engagement over to black - though an Nf6 reply can bounce that back, and Etienne opted for it here. After 2. c4 c5 3. Nc3, the symmetry broke with 3 ..d5, sparking the pawn exchange 4. exd5 Nxd5, before things really got a bit more interesting when Willis went straight to 5. Qa4+!?, not itself threatening directly as the natural developing move Nc6 blocks the check, but the subsequent 6. Ne5 attacks the now-pinned knight, and Etienne opted to trade off the other knights with 6 ..Nxc3 7. dxc3, and then after a subsequent Qa5 was met not with a trade of queens but with 8. Qe4, Etienne opted to make another knight trade (8 ..Nxe5 Qxe5). We may not be in South Newlandia, but that feels like a dangerous disregard for elephant life in a sport that's still overall governed by that Esportivan nation.

Sure enough, Etienne would fall behind after 13 ..Rb8 allowed 14. Qd5+ thus trapping the king in h8, giving Willis a clear if slight advantage that she was able to press home to complete a big victory. "It's a big deal to me to prove that I can be one of the best in the business again, because some people think I'm not, that win hopefully shuts them up." The fact she didn't mention that these critics - at least within Kytlerian circles - have tended towards Tremblay-esque misogyny themselves was unspoken, but didn't need to be explicitly said. The domestic audience certainly knew what she meant.

And Kytlerian chess in general may be capital-B Back here in Eshialand. Both Stijn van Dijk and John Roach came through their testing ties with Valentian opponents - the former needing blitz tiebreaks after a wild exchange of black wins in rapid - and will now face each other in the octofinals, meaning at least one of the Scholars will be in the last eight. "It's going to be exciting to play the Professor (Roach) in a tournament with classical controls, that'll be a first for me since I was a teenager I think," observed van Dijk after his wild win. "Hopefully the way I got here won't cost me too much, but also I know I have the advantage in faster time controls and probably still the disadvantage in classical so maybe I do want to go into these waters again!"

OOC: With regards to the blitz, more Keres at AVRO. Classical and rapid was going to be Botvinnik, but I couldn't find a game I liked - the first game of rapid is Nemeth - Wagner, Vienna 2023, but the other three are vague enough that they're not any specific game.

It was Ruby Tuesday's first international tournament in years, and she certainly wasn't prepared for it. Tuesday had prepared opening lines for a Stardust win, knowing his play well enough to effectively counter it, but between the knockout draw and the start of round 2, she didn't have much time to look at Deering's games. Oh well, if she didn't have an opening strategy her opponent couldn't counter one, and at least she had the white pieces in her first game.

e4, e5, Nf3, Nf6, and Tuesday knew the game was going to be a draw. Yes, there were variations where she could attack, but she definitely wasn't the better player in this matchup, and after 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 she decided to take the draw with 5. Qe2. More time to prep. The game went on a bit longer, but everything got traded off, and Tuesday went back to looking at Deering's past games.

The second game had Tuesday a bit nervous, as this time she had to survive as black, but things would probably be fine. Probably. She decided to decline the Queen's Gambit with e6 for once, and Deering seemed surprised, even more so when Tuesday played 3. Be7, but she continued to press on the queenside. Tuesday, on the other hand, was quite nervous, playing even more passively, with not a single piece of hers passing the fifth rank. Twenty moves into the game, Stockphant had that Deering was better, but not winning, and that was roughly how Tuesday evaluated the position herself - a shift of the attack from the queenside to the kingside looked unstoppable without giving up several pawns. However, she was pleasantly surprised when she came back to the game to find that Deering had continued to push on the queenside, and now Tuesday had enough time to defend. It took a while, but eventually the queens came off the board, and from there the draw was inevitable.

A little while before rapid tiebreaks were slated to begin, Tuesday heard that her compatriot Eleanor Rigby had been knocked out - now she was the only Martian left playing in Vaynorth. No pressure.

The first game of rapid was another Petrov, but this time Ruby had decided to play for a win. The players castled on opposite sides, but for once, Rigby was feeling good, with control of the center. A minor slip-up allowed Tuesday to force isolated double pawns, trading off the queens in the process to get a slightly better endgame. Deering thought she could win a pawn with 19... Bxa2 - but when Tuesday saw this hit the board, she was overjoyed. After 20. b3, the bishop was trapped, but Deering only realized that after 23. Bc4+, a crucial move giving White enough time to win the piece. From there, the game was all but over, and a few moves later, Deering resigned.

All Tuesday had to do now was survive with the black pieces. She'd already done that once before. This time, it was e4, with Deering putting all of her focus on attacking Ruby's king. Tuesday treated this more flippantly than she should've, and it lost her the b-pawn, with Qb3 coming as a nasty surprise. She could now castle safely, though, and she felt like she could draw this game, even down a pawn. As time ticked down on both players' clocks, the pieces slowly were traded off, with Tuesday trying to get rid of as many pawns as possible in doing so. But with a minute and a half left, she exchanged rooks, and now she was left in an endgame she didn't realize was lost. The pawns raced down the board, but when Deering queened, it was with check, and with just 15 seconds, Tuesday resigned.

Stressed from the tense win in the previous game, neither player was particularly excited about blitz tiebreaks, and they traded everything off in a Ruy Lopez, Tuesday finding a fancy trade in which she gave up the exchange but skewered the rooks. Now she had to survive with Black again.

This time, Tuesday found herself on the other side of a Ruy Lopez, where the queens came off the board quickly, but she got a more active rook, and it felt like she could press, with sloppy play from White under time pressure allowing her a free pawn - her knight could be taken, but then there would be nothing defending Deering's knight. Finally, the moment of the match came - Deering thought Tuesday had blundered, as white traded a bishop for a knight in order to fork black's rook and bishop, even as their own bishop was under attack. However, Tuesday was unfazed, giving up the exchange in order to get two advanced passed pawns and a bishop for a rook. Deering tried to defend, but with her inaccurate "fork", she had given black the advantage, and now the game was over, and with it, the match.

Tuesday now had to play Chirpsijibbers Clambanger, who had defeated her compatriot and good friend, Johnny B. Goode. It would be difficult to secure the win, but not impossible, and "not impossible" was going to be as good as she could get.
