Check!: Are We Good?

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Feb 28, 2025 5:45 pm

Hello and welcome back to the Grand Casaran of Chess - coming to you from the Royal Centre in Al-Hilal, ArU Zone, TJUN-ia! All three of the Jaguar Knights managed a 1-2-0 start to their first ever Home International but in this Sumo-style tournament where only the best player wins, everyone knew they had to be at their best...so what happened across Days 3 and 4? Yevgeny Solovyanenko was in the crowd, one of the OG Jaguar Knights and a two-time ECC champion in his own right who now acts as a Sport Ambassador for the TCF and runs his own Chess Academy out in the NAU...what did he see?

Tshering Gyeltshen
R4, B1, T8: L vs Khanyisa van Lundi (SNL)
R5, B2, T2: D vs Klaus Rothbauer (KAT)
R6, B2, T6: D vs Nurgul Zhaksybekova (BKH)
Day 4 Standings: T-25th (1-4-1)

More draws would be the name of the game across the board but for Tshering Gyeltshen, he also suffered defeat for the first time - this time against Khanyisa van Lundi of South Newlandia. A very quick player with a very quick style, no wonder Tshering couldn't keep up...but at least he managed to draw against both Klaus Rothbauer and Nurgul Zhaksybekova. Omori East will be up next.

Anne Christian-Warren
R4, B1, T6: D vs Johnny B Goode (MIR)
R5, B1, T7: W vs Erii Chulanont (HKA)
R6, B1, T5: D vs Angela Weissel (LID)
Day 4 Standings: T-3rd (2-4-0)

On the other side of the coin, ACW managed to get a win on the board by taking down Hakushiya's Erii Chulanont. This guy played a defensive opening style that Anne simply brushed aside and demolished like grapefruit, to the delight of those watching in the group. Johnny B Goode and Angela Weissel managed to get draws but right now, ACW is TJUN-ia's best threat for the win. Eveline Valeria Annalise Tieu Xuan Ngoc will be up next.

Margarita Altamiranda
R4, B1, T7: D vs Hitomi Ogata (HKA)
R5, B1, T5: D vs Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung (VEZ)
R6, B1, T7: D vs Johnny B Goode (MIR)
Day 4 Standings: T-12th (1-5-0)

Draws, draws, draws. Hitomi Ogata? Drawn. Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung? Drawn. Johnny B Goode? Drawn. Hey, at least it's better than losing...right? Rose-Emilie Neveu will be next.

Postby The North Polish Union » Sat Mar 01, 2025 4:48 pm

Chess has always been among the most popular board games in the North Polish Union, although the competitive chess scene in the nation peaked around 100 years ago, when the Union claimed several world-class players as citizens. Krzysztof Tomaszewski was considered a competitor for the title of the strongest player in the world during this era, and his hometown is still the site of a strong domestic tournament today. The country's ability to produce top-flight talent slowly declined, although there were still strong players. Competition also turned inwards as a result of deteriorating diplomatic relations with several neighboring countries led to many players having difficulty traveling to international tournaments.

After reaching a nadir 30 years ago or so, the competitive chess scene has begun to recover, and the Union has once again been starting to put out international-caliber talent. The defection a few years ago of Miefodij Ihnatjew from political repression in his home country has once again provided the Union with a player believed to be among the best in the world, although his return to international competition has been shaky following a competitive hiatus due to personal security reasons.

Here, the North Polish players saw themselves playing better in Rounds 4-6 than 1-3, with Ihnatjew defeating Oskar Lancelot in Round 5 for the second time in recent play (following their matchup in South Newlandia) and drawing his other two games. Kristian Theiss likewise won his Round 5 game against Adam Esteban following a sharp tactical shot out of a Réti Opening. Jacenty Kamiński got his win in Round 6 against Norman Heartwell, after Heartwell uncharacteristically blundered a combination that left Kamiński with 3 connected passed pawns. This means that following Round 6, all 3 Union players are at least at an even score (Theiss at even, and Ihnatjew and Kamiński with +1).

In Round 7, Ihnatjew will have White against Eshialand's teenage star Jamie Cartwright, Kamiński will likewise face off against another teenage phenom in Mo Steiner, and Theiss faces off against the swashbuckling Prince Pierre-Alexandre 1er de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer.

GCC Days 3-4: Still Net Zero

A win for Ziggy Stardust and a loss for Eleanor Rigby on day three was followed by a draw-filled day four for all three Martians here in Al-Hilal, meaning that only Johnny B. Goode has a positive score of the three Spiders, on +1, with Rigby on 0 and Stardust on -1. If any of them can get to +2 or +3, they'll be challenging for the title over the last few rounds, provided nobody else has a great run - however, Goode's the only one close to capable of getting there.

Stardust won his game with clinical efficiency usually lacked by him, dispatching Stephanie Jacobson in under 30 moves. Jacobson mistakenly opened her queenside up, allowing Stardust to sacrifice a bishop and force Jacobson to give up her queen for two minor pieces, and resignation followed soon after. Rigby's loss was effectively ensured by the third move of the game, as she'd made several confusing decisions in preparation. Moths eating into her clothing made her stay up late darning her socks in the night, and she didn't have time to prepare for all the lines Ziegler normally played - and of course, the one line she didn't study is what came down on the board. From there, Rigby was forced into passive play, her king was isolated, and facing either checkmate or a losing endgame, she resigned. Goode had a winning opportunity in his third game, exhausted after a long endgame slog in his second, but he traded the wrong pawns and went into a drawing position, where Margarita Altamiranda was able to give up a queen for a rook, making it impossible for Goode to mate with only two knights.

In their next matchups, arguably all must-win, Johnny B. Goode takes on the Valentian, Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung, in a match he must finish before it reaches the endgame, Eleanor Rigby plays Layan Al-Saud, the experienced Bir Matrasian, and Ziggy Stardust takes on Norman Heartwell, ranked 7th in the world, with the black pieces, in a game he cannot afford to lose.

Mark Jensen was on top of the world. Literally. Well, maybe only in so far as it related to the chess world - his three wins over the last two days - against Gyaromia’s Ilona Adam, Stijn van Dijk from the Kytler Penisulae, and South Newlandia’s Khanyisa van Lundi - put him right at the top of the leaderboard of the Grand Casaran of Chess, having yet to lose a game and being the only person to go 3 for 3 over the last three rounds.

So it made it all the more odd as he and his two fellow Katzeburgians sat down for tea heading into the seventh day of their competition in TJUN-ia, as Mark Jensen would be heading into a top of the table clash for his next game - against none other than his fellow Ynysgard Chess Club teammate Emilia Ziegler.

“I can’t believe we are both right at the top!” Emilia laughed with a hint of glee. “I never would have thought this far into the competition, we’d even be anywhere in the mix, let alone right at the top!”

Mark chuckled. “I’m not sure if we’re actually any good, or just incredibly lucky to get some results where we probably shouldn’t have.”

“It’s going to be just like we’re back at the Chess Hall - except this time we’ve got the international community watching us go head to head, rather than just the occasional confused old man who gets lost off the street.”

“Speaking of, what is your dad up to Mark?” Klaus piped up. He had been sitting to the side of the two front-runners pouting a little bit - he was still punching fair well above his weight, sitting equal in fifth and yet to lose a game, but his seven draws to date have added up to keep him a little bit off the pace.

“Probably getting better results than you, fish-boy,” Mark shot back while slapping Klaus across the back. “I think we all have to take a second to just breathe and celebrate how well we’ve been going as a unit so far. It’s not often you see many Katzeburgians at the top of anything, other than chess seemingly!”

Klaus forced a hint of a smile and then turned his attention back to the large pint in front of him. “So, are you even going to bother talking tactics tonight then?” he said as he lifted his glass to his mouth.

Mark and Emilia both pondered for a second, and then turned their heads to face each other. A silent conversation filled the gap between them, faces shifting as they did the dance of ‘Should we? No, maybe not? Could be fun though! But could lead to other difficulties!' before Emilia finally broke the silence.

“I-I don’t think there’s any need, to be honest,” Emilia said. “We’ll be catching up tomorrow evening anyway and we can talk tactics about the other players then. I mean, I know more than enough of Mark’s play-style that it won’t be too tough of a challenge tomorrow,” she laughed.

Mark raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? Well put your dukes up Ziegler, I’m sorry to say you are going to absolutely go down.”

“We’ll see Mark. Just don’t forget there’s only one of us who knows your biggest weakness.”

“Bold of you to think I have a weakness.”

“You mean you don’t see it? Why do you think I always beat you in the skirmishes we play back in Ynysgard?”

“I just assumed you knew that I always let you win - couldn’t have the number two outshine the leader!”

Emilia let out a loud laugh, a noise which would have no doubt seen her thrown out of a number of libraries back home.

“I guess we’ll just have to see who was full of it then, won’t we?”

“I guess we will. Anyway, for now - let’s have a drink!”

“Now that, I can agree with!” Klaus cheered as he raised his glass. But it wouldn’t be enough to wipe the annoyance out of his system. After all, it was his idea to come and bring a few Katzeburgians onto the international circuit. It was his idea to bring Emilia along and Mark to pad out the numbers. It was his idea to get rip-snortingly drunk before each game. But none of it was panning out how he had wanted it to go.

It had been a lonely life for Klaus Rothbauer since he left the island of Dragoonspiel in the aftermath of the Elephant Chess Cup victory. He had left in search of the professional circuit, thinking he was good enough to rake in the winnings and live a comfy life on the road, seeing the world (or at least, seeing the bulk of Katzeburg). But life on the road wears you down, and Klaus found himself slowly retreating to a quiet life off the boards - holed up in barin-store hotel rooms doing nothing much but sitting in silence, drinking and watching whatever was on TV of a late evening. It’s why he was so keen to bring others with him to his trip overseas - to have someone to share the experience with. But crucially, his plan had him at the front of the ship, leading the Katzeburgian delegation with the best chess you’d see this side of Esportiva.

But as the Grand Casaran turned into the final stretch, Klaus was underperforming, coming dangerously close to the stretch of draws and failures he so often mocked the former head of the Ynysgard Chess Club about - a barren run of draws and close wins which kept him in the middle of the chasing pack. It was good - hell, anyone who was coming into their first competition would be over the moon with those kind of results - but as Klaus sat across from an eagerly mid-conversation Mark and Emilia, he couldn’t help but feeling like the third wheel. The one who was being cast aside, just because he was falling off the pace. And as he downed his fifth pint of the evening, he plotted his next move.

Grand Casaran of Chess Rounds 7-9 - Complete Collapse by Ihnatjew

Al-Hilal, TJUN-ia - Going into round 7 of the GCC, two of the three North Polish Union players found themselves sitting at a +1 score. Following Round 9, two of the North Polish Union players found themselves sitting at a +1 score. The change? Kristian Theiss and Miefodij Ihnatjew swapped placements as the latter lost two straight games.

In Round 7 Ihnatjew won with relative ease against teenager Jamie Cartwright, leading into a top-board matchup against Noemi Etienne, one of the strongest players in the world. Playing a pawn down in a R+B vs R+B ending following a sharp tactical shot from Etienne in a complex middlegame that left him on the defensive, Ihnatjew blundered, allowing his opponent to simplify, and resigned in a rook ending after Etienne got a pawn to the 7th rank. Rather than bouncing back in Round 9, Ihnatjew lost with White to Klaus Rothbauer in a game where he looked completely disinterested and checked out (pun intended). An uncharacteristic collapse from a player that was viewed as the Union's strongest and had been considered among the best in the world at the time of his immigration. In Round 10, Ihnatjew will look to get back on track against Rose-Émilie Neveu, no slouch herself.

In contrast, Kristian Theiss moved into the positive scores over Rounds 7-9. Following a draw against the Prince de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer in a game that looked more like a game from the Romantic Era of chess than one played at a modern tournament, and which was only drawn because both players demonstrated that if both sides sacrifice enough material neither side will be able to mate, Theiss defeated Thomas Baddsen in Round 8 by marching a pawn duo down the board until it became clear that it could no longer be stopped. He completed the trio of games by drawing Ilona Ádám in Round 9.

Jacenty Kamiński on the other hand continued his streak of solid play. at +1 =8 -0 over nine rounds he hasn't produced the fireworks of the other two, but hasn't had the losses either. He drew Mo Steiner, Tshering Gyeltshen, and Eleanor Rigby in games where the outcome was likely never in doubt. In round 10, he faces Eveline Valeria Annalise Tiêu Xuân Ngọc, an endgame expert. Will the Kamiński-Ngọc matchup provide us with yet another drawn rook ending, or will the two combine for something more exciting this time?

Hello and welcome back to the Grand Casaran of Chess - coming to you from the Royal Centre in Al-Hilal, ArU Zone, TJUN-ia! You could get the sense across Al-Hilal that the Jaguar Knights were starting to come out of the rot they had found themselves at the first MCC tournament. The party atmosphere was starting to build up, but was anyone going to strike the match?

Tshering Gyeltshen
R7, B2, T5: W vs Omori East (SGH)
R8, B2, T3: D vs Jacenty Kaminski (NPU)
R9, B1, T6: W vs Sebastian Grob-Coltman (APH)
Day 6 Standings: T-5th (3-5-1)

Tshering Gyeltshen is starting to become more like the player we once knew - lovable, but brutal at the same time. A draw with Jacenty Kamiński of North Poland to start Day 2 ended up being the only blemish over these two days as both Omori East and Sebastian Grob-Coltman ended up facing the sword. From the depths of dispair, Tshering is now tied for 5th and right up there in contention to win it all...

Anne Christian-Warren
R7, B1, T5: D vs Eveline Valeria Annalise Tieu Xuan Ngoc (VEZ)
R8, B1, T7: W vs Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung (VEZ)
R9, B1, T3: D vs Stijn van Dijk (KYP)
Day 6 Standings: T-3rd (3-6-0)

The Lesbian Pirate Queen had more draws to deal with, against Eveline Valeria Annalise Tieu Xuan Ngoc and Stijn van Dijk, but the real breakthrough would come against the other player from Valentine Z - Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung. This game was close, filled with ups and downs, but with most of the crowd on her, she delivered a knockout blow to move to 3-6-0 and tied for 3rd in this table. Not gonna lie, she certainly has a shot...

Margarita Altamiranda
R7, B2, T4: W vs Rose-Emilie Neveu (UNC)
R8, B1, T3: D vs Sebastian Grob-Coltman (APH)
R9, B1, T5: D vs Glacia McDorrey (APH)
Day 6 Standings: T-5th (2-7-0)

For Altamiranda, her split was made on Day 5 with her win over Rose-Emilie Neveu in what was deemed to be a classic match on her part. Day 6 was spent drawing back-to-back games against opponents from Aphrilia - the chaotic Sebastian Grob-Coltman and the influencer Glacia McDorrey. Not too bad at all and just like Tshering, she will enter Day 7 tied for 5th...

GCC Days 5-6: Lackluster Performances Continue

Coming into the start of day 5, one Martian was on +1, one on 0, and one on -1. By the end of day 6, the same was true, the players switching positions like bullets in a revolver - the permutation may change, but ultimately any upwards movement for one is downwards for another. Competitors are beginning to pull away from the pack, and no Spiders are among them. Unless someone can pull out a string of wins, it looks like Stardust, Rigby, and Goode will just be remembered as mediocre chess players with one achievement among them.

I want to tell you, though, Eleanor Rigby's play seems to be dictated by the weather. Day 5 was a good day, sunshine abounded, and Rigby looked more alive than ever. Against Layan Al-Saud, her bishops attacked here, there, and everywhere, and when Rigby threatened mate, Al-Saud was unable to stop it, eventually resigning. The next day was cloudy, and it was clear in both of the games she played that a win was for no one - Oskar Lancelot never had an imbalance of material against her, and against Jacenty Kamiński it was classic Rigby, within 25 moves getting into a position where the best move for both black and white was threefold repetition.

Johnny B. Goode, on the other hand, had a lethargic day 5. Over the past few days, he'd had to get his mother out of trouble with the taxman - she'd won a land dispute against one Dr. Martha Robert in what appeared to be a 'she said, she said' situation, but had neglected to pay taxes on that property, and for a time had to live in a shack resembling a yellow submarine. His exhaustion finally got to him, and he didn't notice Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung's attack until it was far too late to prevent her rooks from barreling down on his king. He was mostly able to salvage day 6, getting two draws, but against Erii Chulanont that felt like a loss - he had squandered a winning position by trading too many pawns.

Ziggy Stardust, when asked whether his chess skill was dead after day 2, responded 'I'm not dead, I'm only sleeping.' By the end of day 5, he'd dug himself out of that hole, getting back to equal after a desperately needed win against Norman Heartwell where he pressed a pawn advantage in a clinical fashion uncharacteristic of him, and all three Spiders were (temporarily) on 0 or better. However, that night, he received some disturbing and increasingly cryptic fan mail, ranging from 'Got to get you into my life' and 'Love you to' (a bit weird, but alright) to 'And your bird can sing' (does it symbolize something, or is it just incoherent). Disturbed by the letters, his brief stint in the 'average' section ended that morning with a loss to Elani Jabulan. He was able to save a draw against Valerio Hassan, but the damage had been done. Unless he can go 3/4 or better over the next three days, he won't end the tournament on a positive score, and his position as leader of the Martian chess scene will be seriously challenged.

On day 7, Eleanor Rigby will try to win one back for the Martians with the black pieces against Charlene Jeannie N Marceline Myong Suh-Hyung, who defeated Johnny B. Goode, Goode will play an even longer-named competitor, Prince Pierre-Alexandre 1er de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer, and Ziggy Stardust, the only one of the three with the white pieces, will attempt to get back to even against Tobi Al-Amim of Bir Matras. How will they do? Well, that's tomorrow, and tomorrow never knows.

Vielfaltig chess dominance, how it happened

Chess has for ages been an obscure sport in Vielfaltig seeing very little professional participation. Despite minimal participation, chess players remain among the most respected sportspeople in Vielfaltig. This is due to numerous social factors, particularly the intellectual aspect of the game and people who believe that chess is a cerebral activity. There is a degree of truth to these beliefs and chess has often been introduced to children at a young age to boost their memory and intelligence. Owing to the clear benefits the game had in terms of increasing concentration and developing problem-solving skills, chess clubs became a regular occurrence in most schools across the nation. This greatly boosted the exposure young children had to the game and quickly took it up. These chess clubs were mostly run by amateur players who struggled to make a living off simply playing and thus were a source of sustenance for much of the chess community too. This increased exposure meant that the game went from being obscure to a regular part of the lives of numerous students who kept with the game as they grew up. This boosted the game's relevance as we saw great interest in the domestic circuit, with players vying for the coveted title of chess champion. The match format meant that the players would have to go through a difficult qualification process to challenge for the title ensuring that only the best could do so. This combined with the increasing popularity of chess due to its introduction in the daily lives of people resulted in a golden age of domestic chess.

This golden age was defined by a record-breaking number of tournaments being held regularly and the establishment of the Candidates circuit to challenge for the Championship. This resulted in a great degree of professionalism entering the world of chess as more and more players were willing to pursue chess as a professional option rather than a mere board game. This brings us to the present era of the Multiversal Chess Championships. This period is preceded by the domestic boom in chess and thus much of our present success is due to the success domestically of the game. Vielfaltig boasts one of the best-organised structures for chess players to develop as is seen by the talent of Sameul Salucci, one of the youngest participants in the MCC. The top three Vielfaltigian players took their talents to South Newlandia for the SN3C in the first event of the scheduled MCC circuit. Our success at the SN3C is one for the history books as all three of our players qualified for the final group where they finished the tournament tied at 6.5/10 each. This was followed by an enthralling all-Vielfaltig tie-breaker which enthused fans throughout the world. Many came to question whether the stage of the MCC would merely be dominated by the players from Vielfaltig. More to that answer came in the GCC held in TJUN-ia so far as our players were largely competing for the top spots. Etienne having won the SN3C in an Armageddon game against Salucci was on the form of her life going into the ninth round as she stood atop the standings in good position to add another victory to her kitty. She however fell to her first defeat in the tournament to Emilia Zieglar from Katzeburg. Katzeburg appeared to be a boogey nation for our players as earlier in the tournament Salucci also lost to Mark Jensen from Katzeburg who now stood at first with 7 points and one point clear of Etienne. So, how real is Vielfaltig dominance? Probably not much but we will find more on that as the team is slated to participate in the upcoming Esportivan Chess Cup and more importantly the coveted Elephant Chess Cup.

Chess cutoff!

ONE ROUND TO GO!

All three players from the North Polish Union find themselves tied in the 6th-16th place spot with 7/12 points (+2), a respectable result from the trio. After Round 9, Miefodij Ihnatjew had been trailing hid compatriots at an even score, but after using a rest day to reorient himself, tore off two consecutive wins against very strong opposition in Rose-Émilie Neveu and Sebastian Grob-Coltman before agreeing to a peaceful result in Round 12 where he faced countryman Jacenty Kamiński. No matter the inconsistent results, Ihnatjew has been playing extremely entertaining and decisive chess in this tournament, with only 4 draws in 12 games.

Young Kristian Theiss also won a game against Charlene Suh-Hyung. This young player known for his speculative style has improved his defensive abilities greatly over the course of the SN3C and this tournament, managing draws rather than losing outright when his aggressive tactics fail to pay off, an important step in the development of any young chess player.

Finally we come to Jacenty Kamiński. Solid and dependable he has aimed for as unexciting a position as possible in every game. Although he won a technical endgame against Shavkat Muradov in Round 11 he has drawn 10 of 12 so far, a number surpassed in this tournament only by the Prince de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer who has drawn an astounding 12 of 12. To his credit, though, this cautious style has played off as he is also the only player from the Union not to have lost a game so far. With only one round to go, he will look to keep that going.

Part 2 – What has happened so far, and how the two Valentians must now face each other before hopefully going to the next phase.

Head Diplomat Charlene Jeannie Natalia Adeline Marceline “완벽한 협상가” Celestie Christine Irelle Dv. Arianna Rees Edith Novena Annie Ciara Whitney Esther Iris Bethany Myong Suh-Hyung: Quite a fair lot to report on, oh my goodness! Please do pardon me for my long absence, as I have been rather busy lately in the world of chess… among many other things. There was a spike in victories from Eveline who was able to win three matches in a row, so that was very impressive for sure. Then, on the side of myself – hmm, you win some and you lose some, that’s always how these things go. I can either set up my endgame or not, and for the latter, I would still try my best to make sure that it ends with a draw. I am not going to go into too many details for that. Maybe for another time, but ehh, I am not so sure. Overall, after 12 games, both myself and Eveline were tied at the 17th spot along with a couple of others. Not bad for the second international and interdimensional game, I thought. Oh and yes, there was also the matches that the players from Alanis Star have played, cannot forget about them, of course! It was tragically one where we were outmatched and outskilled by all measures, but that was to be expected – that was, after all, our very first foray into the festival as Alanis Star. Let’s go into the rather interesting match up that is Round 13 for us.

We waited for the matchups to be announced, eager yet nervous at the same time. And then, well, the big revelation came – in the form of myself and Eveline being pitted against each other. The two of us looked at us each other in surprise – confused yet exciting for this opportunity. “Well, show me what you can do then, Eve!” I told her lightheartedly, to which she also returned the same exchange, “Hah, same to you too! And hey, don’t hold back, let’s see if we can do this and go to the next round. We are on equal footing, so we will see what we can do at the end, eh?” We shook hands and gave each other a well-meaning hug. I’m not that too driven and hung up about the finals, but in the end, I believe that this is going to be a learning experience and the opportunity for the both of us. Hey, it fits us as well! I get to see what I will need to do against Eveline’s barrage of aggressive plays and attacks, while she’ll also get to learn more about if her opponent is truly losing or that they are going for a big play at the near-end of the game. All a matter of perspective and so with that, we are ready. We will play fair and well, albeit a bit merciless.

Welcome to the Chess Battle Royale in Walbourg, Vielfaltig!

Format:
The Chess Battle Royale is a chess tournament, contested by individual players. Both players have 100 minutes each to play all of their moves. For more information on the game of chess, here is the Wikipedia article on chess. Chess knowledge is absolutely not required for RPing this tournament, though.

The 32 entrants will play each other in head-to-head matches. Any player that loses or draws is eliminated from the competition, proceeding until there is only one player remaining.

Tiebreakers:
If all remaining players draw at the same time, things proceed to Armageddon Playoffs immediately.

You are still invited to post a new Overview if you have new information, and you’re also welcome to post a roleplay before the first scorination!

First Round matchups:

June 22nd: 1st Round
June 29th: 2nd round
July 6th: 3rd round
July 13th: 4th round, 5th round if required

RP Information:
You may now start posting in this thread. It is recommended, although not required, that you post a Player Overview for your players to let other roleplayers know a little more about what they’re going up against. You can go into further detail about whatever you want (ages, heritage, club team (if any), play style, favourite openings etc. etc.). Otherwise, you can Roleplay about whatever you like; it doesn’t have to be chess, either.
You are also advised to include a Roleplay permissions box in your roster post. An example may look like this:
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Yes/No
Godmod game events: Yes/No
Godmod other events: Yes/No

This can reduce conflicts between you and your opponent when you both want to RP the same match, but the best plan to do that remains to message your opponent on discord or by telegram. Don’t be intimated by the amount of opponents it may seem like you need to consider simultaneously - you only need to worry about the games you actually want to talk about in-depth.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a telegram or message me on discord - I know some of this stuff is confusing, so please ask if anything is unclear!

Vielfaltig is a relatively large nation located south of Restresas bordered by Restresas and the Hinodejin Empire. The country is divided into four states comprising distinct cultural identities often causing tensions between the states. The largest of these states is Kaunus which boasts nearly half the population. The smallest is Montebello, where the capital city of Montebello is also located, with most of its population residing in the urban centres. Vielfaltig is known for strong workers' rights, a largely urban population and a strong chess culture.
The climatic conditions of Vielfaltig although on a day-to-day basis, the variation should not be too drastic. During the running of the Battle Royale, the country is enjoying its winter months. The weather should be pleasant in most regions with the highest temperatures hitting 30°C while the lowest could go up to 5°C. The coastal regions of Montebello and Marigny typically have higher temperatures around the 20°C mark while in the interior regions of Kaunus and Palma, it could get colder around 10°C. Significant rainfall is not forecast for the period of the tournament however there could be the occasional shower or two.
Personal laws in Vielfaltig are relatively lax and you are not likely to get into trouble. Alcohol is widely available and can be legally purchased by anyone above the age of 16. ID is typically not required to purchase alcohol unless you look like a ten-year-old. Smoking is banned in public, the consequence typically is you getting a stern warning and told to fuck off so please don't do it. Cannabis can be purchased from state-sanctioned distributors. All forms of narcotics are decriminalised in Vielfaltig and you can legally import it however any sale within Vielfaltig is a criminal offence.

Walbourg is culturally Vielfaltig's most prominent city with much of the country's entertainment industry based here including most prominent filmmakers. It is not large but does a lot of heavy pulling for the nation and its region of Marigny. It is significant not only in terms of entertainment but also in the production and processing of the wine which keeps the local Marignian wine industry running. It is also the location of the oldest and most prestigious university in the country, the University of Marigny. A city of vast multitudes, Walbourg was also the worst afflicted in the Great War of Unification. Thus it remains a hotspot of separatist activity including the occasional violent activity. Following the Quanta Stadium incident, political chaos and violence has been rampant through Marigny (refer to my RPs for details). Security will be strengthened greatly for the event and most teams will not be allowed to leave the hotel or designated areas without permission. 300 National Guard forces have been deployed to Walbourg for the duration of the Battle Royale to ensure security and safety. If you wanna RP anything pertaining to the security or political situation, I would greatly encourage it and do let me know so we may even collaborate on it. Also probably let me know before doing something too serious.

Walbourg similarly to Bogen is one of the most sports-rich cities in Vielfaltig. With two strong top-flight teams, Walbourg City and Walbourg FC, the city is effectively split into two camps. The two camps are eternally being at each other's throats over which team is better. Walbourg is also home to the present National Chess Champion, Noemi Etienne who also won the last edition of the SN3C. She recently withdrew from the Battle Royale due to disputes with ChessVFT regarding her political activism. The local chess club has been upgraded to the Bundesliga side Warblers with Etienne captaining the outfit looking for a good Bundesliga showing.

Hotel Le Rivage Blue will be the host of the Battle Royale. The hotel will remain closed to all outsiders during the duration of the event. The number of viewers permitted will be limited due to security concerns. Located in downtown Walbourg, it overlooks the famous Flandour beach with a private portion reserved for residents of the Rivage Blue. It is considered to be the most luxurious destination in all of Vielfaltig. All players will be provided with rooms and with it all facilities the hotel entails. All matches will be played in the 5th floor Conference Hall which has been organised to host this tournament. All boards are calibrated digitally so games are simultaneously streamed online.

Check!: Back To The Fire

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Jun 16, 2025 10:47 am

Welcome back to the MCC where this time, things are set to burn down! After TJUN-ia's Jaguar Knights crashed spectacularly out of the ECC before even making the final stage, the three MCC players on that team return to the MCC Tour with their rankings unchanged, but their pride bruised by what happened in South Newlandia. So with that in mind, the gang must head to the Hotel Le Rivage Blue in Walbourg, Vielfaltig for one of the most chaotic formats you will ever see - the Chess Battle Royale. The rules are simple: win and you stay alive, lose or draw and you go home, we play on until only one is left standing and if the final decider is tied, then an Armageddon Playoff (Black wins in event of tie) will be played until someone wins out. It is brutal in nature, with no room for mistakes anywhere on that board, so the records our players have may not change that much if they go home early...

Rianderan Player Overviews

Postby Riandera » Fri Jun 20, 2025 10:46 pm

Sri Nyoman Yuli (b. July 27, 1997) is the best Rianderan chess player, according to the RCF. Her parents were professional chess players, so she thought it was only right for her to continue their legacy. Aside from being the best chess player in Riandera, she also is the smartest person in the Oriental Republic, with an IQ of 203. At 9, she was versing adults in chess, and she would win almost every round. Could she make her way up to high positions internationally, or stay at the bottom?

1st Game: vs. Rowena Sowards (KAT)

Catarina Ramos, nicknamed Rina (b. December 14, 1995), is No. 2 in Rianderan chess, just behind Sri Nyoman. Originally, she was into surfing. However, she changed to chess after getting poor grades in primary school. Rina was part of her high school's chess club, and got consistent places on the podium. She was supposed to compete in national chess championships, but rejected the opportunity for university. After graduating from university, she got back into chess, and has made her way up into the Top 2.

1st Game: vs. Tshering Gyeltshen (TJU)

Irene Susanti (b. March 1, 1999) is No. 3 in Rianderan chess. She was fascinated with chess from a very young age, so her parents would train her to become one of Riandera's best chess players. At just 9, she was the champion of the Juniors 2007-2008 season in Riandera. She wanted to advance further in her career, so she joined her school's chess club. At the end of her high school years, she was declared the best chess player in her high school, and advanced to nationals.

1st Game: vs. Eveline Valeria Annalise Tiêu Xuân Ngọc (VEZ)

Following the success of the Ynysgard Chess Club at the 11th Elephant Chess Cup where the team defended their title, the members of the club have mostly gone to ground in the aftermath. The club was notably absent of one player when the team touched base back down in Katzestadt, and outside of Nora Keller giving interviews to the media as part of her wider campaign as part of the Katzeburgian election, they have refused to elaborate what happened in the immediate aftermath of their success in South Newlandia.

This has even extended to the team refusing to pick up any calls from international federations enquiring about their interest in the Multiversal Chess Championships. Following Mark Jensen winning top spot and Emilia Ziegler finishing runner up at the Grand Casaran in TJUN-ia, the Katzeburgian delegation this time around will instead by filled by members of the Waldstein Chess Club - hoping to do better than their lacklustre performance at the 4th Esportivan Sporting Festival.

Brian Bowman
World Ranking
- UR

Brian is the head of the Waldstein Chess Club, one of the more well-known clubs to arise following the Katzeburgian success at the tenth Elephant Chess Cup. Brian, a 37-year-old graphic designer, rules over the club with a bit of an iron fist, with all players who sign up to play under the club needing to commit to a stringent and consistent practice process. It’s a regiment which has proven quite successful to date - with the club quickly becoming one of the best in the nation and even getting a few wins over the Ynysgard Chess Club at regional tournaments.

However, it’s fair to say this approach did not translate to the regional scene, with Brian overseeing a disastrous performance at the 4th Esportivan Sporting Festival, going from one of the nations favoured to win the whole thing to instead crashing out in the group stages. The poor performance of the team has raised some questions about whether he is the best person to proceed leading the club, especially in the face of the continued success over in Ynysgard. Brian is deeply analytical about the moves he makes, spending a large chunk of his time away from the boards studying the game and openings. He is known to go really in-depth when scouting his upcoming opponents, even to the point where he has been able to identify players sleep schedules and movements in the lead up to important matches.

Rowena Sowards
World Ranking
- UR

Rowena is a classic second-in-command to Brian and the Waldstein Chess Club, with the 28-year-old lawyer helping him oversee the club with a strict but successful hand. Rowena is arguably the player most members of the club don’t want to get on the wrong side of, as her blunt manner of speaking and nature to quickly get aggressive often leads to confrontations which puts Rowena well and truly in her element.

Her performance in the Esportivan Sporting Festival was arguably the best of the wider team, but with her being so closely intertwined with Brian as leaders of the club, any sort of change at the top would also see her deposed unless she can prove she could stand on her own - a deep consideration in her choosing to accept an invitation to play in Vielfaltig. Her ruthless nature extends to the board, zeroing in on any and all mistakes made by her opponents to exploit them to maximum effect, however this often means she can take a little too long to make her move, leaving a fatal flaw in her game which opponents will often try to use to their advantage.

Maria Deering
World Ranking
- UR

The youngest member of the Waldstein Chess Club, Maria was hailed as an up and coming prodigy of Katzeburgian Chess until the wheels fell off at the Esportivan Sporting Festival. The 16-year-old had a rapid rise up the ranks since taking up the game in the aftermath of the nation’s first Elephant Chess Cup victory, and has been a consistent top ranking player at regional tournaments all across the country’s north west, often demolishing players double her age with relative ease.

With a lot of raw talent, she loves to trap people by playing on her age and fooling people into thinking they are just taking on a careless and lucky child, only to twist the knife in at the perfect time to leave opponents in a trap of their own making. However, this approach failed to make a real impact in South Newlandia at the Sporting Festival, with Deering often blowing games with foolish blunders. She has seen major development in her skills under the tutelage of Brian and Rowena and the potential is well and truly still there to be a leading light of the nation’s chess community, but to the dismay of her parents, has started to take on a few of those ruthless elements as well - only allowing her to go to Vielfaltig due to the rocketship potential a good showing could provide to her career.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Roleplay about specific moves made: Please absolutely go ahead, I know close to nothing about the notation and strategy of chess.
Godmod game events: Yes, but please feel free to chat through it with me over TG/Discord!
Godmod other events: Yes, but please feel free to chat through it with me over TG/Discord!

Introduction – Warzone ahead. Skins and DLCs not part of the schema.

Head Diplomat Charlene Jeannie Natalia Adeline Marceline “완벽한 협상가” Celestie Christine Irelle Dv. Arianna Rees Edith Novena Annie Ciara Whitney Esther Iris Bethany Myong Suh-Hyung is back once again with an Endgame Technician tactics of her. It has so far carried her, and she simply did not want to change to anything else for the time being. On top of that, she figured that for this time, she wants to focus a little less towards her work as a news reporter and journalist, and instead give more focus towards the game of chess. It sounded like an obvious idea that she should have been doing in the first place, but initially, Charlene was a bit more confident that she would’ve been able to focus on both matters at once. Alas, plans change, and now with Chess Battle Royale, Charlene will prove once again that it pays to be patient. Not that she disagree with finishing the game early if needed, indeed.

Eveline Valeria Annalise Tiêu Xuân Ngọc, on the other hand, is the polar opposite of her Valentian teammate, opting to finish the games as fast as possible with her Hyper Aggressive technique. It was quite a disaster at first for the first few games and seasons in the international scene, with Eveline being unable to sustain it far enough and giving her opponent the breathing time. “It’s a lot like those strategy games, especially the ones that necessitate that you keep on attacking and going on the offensive. Otherwise, if you let go even just a little bit, they are going to recoup or find ways to strategize against you. Sure, Chess does not have the “train more troops” so it’s not exactly a real-time strategy. The methods, like I said, are still the same. If you are pushing, go all out and commit to it. That’s what I did for the games, and eventually I got to a point where I was able to beat a good number of opponents.

This wasn’t the first semi-pointless meeting Josef Brand would sit in on and it would not be the last. But there was a sense of change in the air today and he couldn’t put his finger on just why. Things had been peaceful since he joined Katzestadt law firm Darmstadt Oliver Nicholls & Grant as their Head of Communications following an ‘extended period of absence’ from the Katzeburgian Football Federation following a national meltdown broadcast on KBC before the national team’s failure to qualify for World Cup 97. Having exiled himself out to Ynysgard to get away from the media and his less than desirable profile as much as he could, he could only enjoy life on the small island for a short period before the country’s attention began to turn to the island of Dragoonspiel. It didn’t take long for mainland journalists to clock that Brand had moved to the island once the local chess club claimed success at the Elephant Chess Cup in Eshialand a couple of years earlier, meaning he was basically on borrowed time before every person on the island knew exactly who he was.

He had a lifeline of course - Marvin Donaldson, the ever-sweary head of the KFF’s Media Division, had asked for him to come back to the KFF during the 39th Campionato Esportiva. But Josef couldn’t go back. He couldn’t twist himself into knots again trying to defend the indefensible. So he turned it down, amidst a flurry of curse words from Marvin which indicated that young Josef would never find himself working in the sporting world again. And so far, it was accurate. Upon returning to the mainland, he took up various comms roles across the country - from a small charity role in Konigpool to a job overseeing the external comms for a gaming studio based out of Abersee. It wasn’t even until he took the role at DONG that he had stepped foot in the capital city of Katzeburg; the city which was home to the KFF and many of his nightmares which had given him many sleepless nights over the last couple of years.

But he had settled back into life in the capital well - hitting the ground running and implementing a range of processes which would see the firm actually be in a position to produce some suitable comms. It was oddly freeing for him; he was finally in a position where he could carve his own team the way he wanted to. No Marvin, no micromanagement, nobody to force him into something he didn’t want to do - with the exception of the firm’s Managing Partner of course. And that’s why Josef felt a tinge of change in the air today, as the MP himself had decided to grace this regular catchup meeting between Josef and the firm’s general counsel. He often sat down with Lee Reynolds every couple of weeks over a cup of coffee to chat through the latest things the firm could be facing in terms of negative press - 99 times out of 100 it would be a very brief catchup. Things rarely went poorly at DONG, with the exception of their name of course, which was a pretty constant source of derision within the industry. So when Paul Adams was seated next to Lee as Josef entered the luxurious fifth story cafe in their office which overlooked the River Cuomo and provided a brilliant sight of Bramblewood Park, Josef’s radar started pinging almost immediately.

“I won’t take up too much of your time here, Josef,” Paul said as he gestured for Josef to sit down into a small maroon booth near the window. As he squeezed into the booth, Lee slid over a cup of coffee he had already gotten prepared for Josef. Brand eyed the general counsel suspiciously - what death trap was he being marched into here?

“As I’m sure you are aware, our commercial team has been a long-standing advisor to the Bank of Katzestadt. We’ve recently been advising them on a spot of bother they’ve seemed to have with a small handful of customers across the country, working with our disputes team to clean up any particularly nasty messes.”

“This is all above board, of course,” Lee interjected.

“What type of issues are these customers having?” Josef queried, flicking open a notebook he pulled from his blazer pocket.

“It’s nothing significant,” Lee waved away. “Some customers are reporting that funds have mysteriously vanished from their accounts. Naturally this has meant they’ve defaulted on their payments of things like bills and mortgages and they are simply pointing their fingers at the bank rather than own up to the fact that they’ve planned their budgeting poorly.”

“That can’t be it surely though?” Josef scratched his head in confusion. “Where has the money gone then?”

Paul shuffled in his seat uncomfortably. “Well, this is the matter at hand. Speaking transparently, the software used by the bank has a rare accounting glitch that means some customers have had shortfalls pop up in their accounts. The money which was there was instead diverted to the business accounts of the bank itself rather than the customer, with the software not accurate enough in its reporting to figure out who the money actually belongs to. This has meant the bank needs to also claw those funds back from the individuals to make up the shortfall which appears in those accounts too.”

Josef looked up from his notes, taking a deep breath. “So, the bank has been asking us to chase these matters up and claw money back from customers despite knowing the money is still within the bank?”

Paul and Lee both nodded. Josef swore under his breath. “This won’t play well with the media, let me tell you now.”

“Both us and the bank are aware of this,” Lee said. “So far, we’ve been lucky that the government hasn’t opened anything looking into this; everyone knows that there’s been more than enough complaints into MPs about this. But the tides may be changing, especially as we close towards the election; a change in government, even the risk of it, may be enough to push the government to open an inquiry into all this.”

“And if that happens, we’re fucked,” Paul said bluntly.

“So we need to get ahead of this,” Josef said. “We can set money aside to donate to the campaigning group behind this as a way of paying back our transgressions and spin the narrative that we acted only off the information provided to us by the bank - we’ll take a hit, but it won’t be as brutal as we’d expect.”

“Yeah… We’re not going to do that,” Lee said, slowly shaking his head. “That would of course indicate our guilt, and we’re not going to give anyone anything to crucify us with. Paul and I have been chatting and we’ve agreed we’re going to go down a slightly different route.”

Josef leaned back and rested himself against the back of the booth. He didn’t even clock how far forward he had moved while taking all this in. “And that is?”

“We’re going to do proactive positive PR, and lots of it,” Paul said. “It’s going to be hard to write anything negative against us if we’re pumping funds into a beloved pastime in Katzeburg.”

“You don’t mean to tell me we’re going to sponsor a team in the KNL?” Josef said, his heart pumping faster at the mere thought of being dragged back into the footballing world.

“No, no,” Paul said. “Much bigger than that.”

“The league? They are looking for sponsors, but speaking from experience I’m not sure that would be the best play either.”

“We’re not looking at football, Josef,” Lee snapped. “We’re going to create something out of nothing which not only taps into a growing market, but has a waft of goodwill attached to it already.”

“Oh yeah? And what would that be?” Josef said dismissively.

Paul leaned across the table. “We’re going to start a national chess league.”

Pawn to f4 ... seriously?

Malik raised an eyebrow to his sister over the board. Why was she like this? Paradystopia's inaugural national chess championships, a chance for her to solidify her standing as the nation's second best player, a chance to claim some bragging rights over her younger brother, a chance to show the chess world what she was all about.

But pawn to f4.

He sighed, and began to work out his sister's game plan.

She had just handed him an advantage, weakened her king's side long-term. Why was she smiling?

Miri looked strangely proud of herself. She had played her brother enough to know that trying to face against him on a level playing field was foolish. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of openings, a strong grasp of tactical play and a ruthless endgame. He was like some sort of chess machine wearing the skin of an awkward man in his early twenties; A cold, mechanical thought process but lacking a little in adaptability, and with the emotional intelligence of the average houseplant. To beat Malik, she knew you first had to drag him well and truly out of his comfort zone then batter him with all you've got before he gets the chance to reset, and readjust.

Pawn to d4? Not bringing out your knight, brother? Naughty computer ...

Though the odds were firmly in Malik's favour, Miri herself was no slouch though perhaps she was a little too chaotic to really make waves in the chess institutions. She saw Malik's library of books on theory as more of guidelines for certain situations and took great steps to avoid any overly taxing self-analysis. She has a great talent for the endgame, and is arguably better than Malik at it. Her main strategy is to gain a material advantage, promptly simplify and throw in the odd curve ball to disrupt any opposition tactics along the way.

Pawn to c4. Offering a queen's bishop's pawn gambit? Undermining the centre? Already? Should I take? Malik paused again to think.

Miri knew that Malik would be overanalysing her two moves and doing mental cartwheels in an attempt to disrupt her plan. Her plan which was presently 'Mess up Malik'

Pawn to d4. Boo. Rejecting the gambit. It was a free pawn.

Sort of. Only lightly poisoned ...

Quickly, knight to f4. Attack the pawn again.

Just as quickly, knight to c6, defending the advanced pawn.

Chirpsijibbers Clambanger was half-watching the game from her own seat wrapping up a match against a lowly opponent. She had just about guaranteed third place, and unless her opponent managed to reverse his losing position pretty quickly, it was going to stay that way. Chirpsijibbers was a pteron; a large wriggling otter who was unsure of the best possible position for sitting in a chair when one has a large muscular tail. She too failed to comprehend Miri's tactic as she herself played a deft knight fork which provoked groans from her opponent, and wondered how such a seemingly lax opening could conquer the 'Robertson bot'. That said, it was still more structurally sound than any of her attempts to find a solid continuation of the Crab opening.

Chirpsijibbers was very fond of rook's pawn openings. She called them her secret weapons. 'Pre-developed peripheral pawns'. Granted, they were passive, but they did compliment Chirpsijibbers' style, that of steady structured play. She enjoyed the analogies of her pteron counterparts, that she was like an oyster that just wouldn't break open no matter how many fancy rocks you hit it with. She certainly wasn't a flashy player, but her defenses were water-tight.

"So you're doing this thing in Vielfaltig too?"

Malik never usually spoke at the table, it was now Miri's turn to be on the back foot.

"What? The Battle Royale?"

Malik nodded as he moved towards his knight but stopped short and went back to pondering his queenside.

"Oh yeah. Well, a bit of aggressive classical. Sounds like my sort of game. Thingychippers, is it? The otter, they're coming too."

"Aggressive? I always thought of your style as more 'foolhardy' personally."

Malik had decided to move his knight, and Miri saw that she would be finding herself a bishop down at some point in the next few moves.

"Bet I'll get further than you."

A rare grin flirted across Malik's lips before his usual stony demeanor took control again.

"You're on, sister. Oh, and pardon me for not shaking on it, but I fear it not beneath you to have planned this in order to try cheat a draw out of me."

A Statement on Sixty-Four Squares

The Eshian Chess Federation was never one that got deep into political situations. In fact, this was probably the least politically-connected federation playing in the tournament, with Lazlo Herefur only conversing with political figures to get funding to go to tournaments, and the team playing less to make the country proud and more to enjoy their favorite game. However, this time around was, by necessity, very very different.

The Chess Battle Royale wasn't just another chess tournament happening in Newport, or Eshialand City, or any of the other chess holy sites dotted around the multiverse. Rather, this tournament was set to be played in Walbourg, Marigny, the epicenter of Esportiva's biggest political crisis since the Northlands. With ChessVFT already having effectively drummed their Marignien champion off the participant rolls for her stance on the matter, it was being made very clear that this was more than "just another chess tournament" and it had to be treated as such.

Jamie Cartwright, the young upstart star of the Eshian chess program, had been the most vocal on the team about the alleged human rights violations occurring in Vielfaltig in recent months. Some would call it being young, naïve, and not understanding the consequences of taking such a major stance, but this sentiment was shared by many in Eshialand, even if not as loudly as he had been. Jason Severn had also been joining in the calls for justice, leading to Lazlo Herefur calling foul when these two players were the only two compatriots drawn against each other in the first round. In an event where only winners shall survive, one must lose in the first round and go right back home, with the distinct possibility that neither could, even though they agreed that one of them should go on between them.

As for Stephanie Jacobson, who historically devoted her every waking hour to chess while blocking out much of the outside world, she really couldn't be bothered to worry about any of this political nonsense. She was here to play, win, and send Jacenty Kamiński packing. Simple as, no nonsense.

There were some questions about whether the Eshian players would even be allowed into Vielfaltig given the recent situation, but in the end they -- as well as Lazlo, who billed himself as their handler -- were allowed in under the premise that they were here for the tournament and should be there for that, at least. However, Eshian media, including ENN's Josh Seametzle and perennial chess goofball Danny Stehl, were not allowed in, as their presence was seen as much less necessary than the players. When asked for comment on why the Eshian press wasn't granted a pass to the tournament, ChessVFT simply cited "safety concerns", but Herefur once again smelled something fishy.

When the team arrived at Hotel Le Rivage Blue, what they found was unlike any chess tournament they had ever seen before. Gone were the throngs of spectators hoping to ask the players about their favorite response to the Caro-Kann, as most of them were replaced by armed security guards who refused to let anyone in without one of the very few tickets being sold. "Just watch the games at home," they said... it all felt so alien, having last played in Newport, where life seemed to stop when chess came to town.

Hopes among this team remained high, however, that everything political would melt away when the clocks started and the first pawns were pushed. After all, the 64 squares of the board are a world apart from all of the issues going on outside. There is no b9 behind the black knight, no room for influence beyond the 8 ranks and files. Chess clocks don't measure real time, as time, for all intents and purposes, stops when the game starts.

Jamie and Jason sat down at board 2, all of Eshialand watching this board, a battle between their nation's top 2, intensely. They shook hands, Jason started the clock, and Jamie pushed his d-pawn forward two squares.

"I've always hated you for that one, haha..." Jason told him quietly, never a fan of queen's pawn openings, before responding with Nf6. This tournament was officially on.
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

The Spiders had missed the first boat from Aleirave - the one going to Aleirave was delayed, and they already had a tight connection - but they still managed to get to Walbourg in time. However, instead of a day and a half as originally planned, they arrived in Walbourg at 7:30am the day of the tournament - just a few hours before it started. After frantically unpacking, Stardust and Goode decided to play a quick hyperbullet match, with a strange time control: 1|0.93. Originating in the Kytler Peninsulae as 'the fastest way to play chess with increment', the time control actually has each player start with 1 second. This means that opening tricks are rewarded, as if you play a strange gambit, your opponent will often have less than 10 seconds to think and respond.

Goode took the white pieces this match, and his explosive style did not disappoint.

Three moves in and both players have already made a mistake. Goode picked up the wrong knight, and with no time to set it down, was forced to play Nc3, and Stardust, on autopilot, took the pawn instead of pushing d5.

4. Nf3 d4 5. Nd5 c6 6. Nxf4 Bg4 7. Bc4 Bc5
Stardust proceeds to lose a pawn, forgetting that the knight can move backwards. He's let Goode get the development he wanted without even winning a pawn in exchange. With only 2 seconds on the clock, he lets Goode have a massive advantage, where Bxf7+ is just completely winning (if Kxf7, there's Ne5+, winning back the piece and drawing the king out into the open, up a pawn)

8. d3 Nd7 9. O-O Ne5
Both sides seem to forget Goode can attack - Goode himself makes a prophylactic move, preventing any future d3+, and Stardust disregards all the open lines to his king, pinning the knight to the queen.

10. Nxe5 Bxd1
Spoiler alert: the pin's not real. Goode correctly gives up the queen, knowing his attack is too strong for Stardust. Stockphant evaluates this position as +2, but there's only one move that wins.

11. Bxf7+ Ke7
That wasn't it. Nxf7 wins the rook, and anywhere the queen moves, there's simply Rxd1 and Nxh8, and white has a knight, a bishop, and a rook for a queen. If Qe7, there's Ne6, Bg5, and the queen is trapped (although there's a desperation Qxf7, equalizing material, all of black's pieces are on the back rank and the position is still dominant). Bxf7+ is the second-best move, but it's only equal. Although Kf8 is mate in two (a knight sacrifices itself on g6 and the other delivers mate on the same square), Ke7 leads to a crazy sequence of moves which end in white having two pawns and a knight for a rook, a drawn position.

12. Nfg6+ hxg6 13. Nxg6+ Kd7 14. Ne5+ Kc7
Goode assumed Kf8 was coming, so he picked up his f-knight, and had to set it down on g6. This time, the check doesn't work, and although Goode can chase the king, the king hides behind the c-, b-, and a-pawns, and now Stardust is winning.

15. Bxg8 Qh4 16. Rf7+ Kb6 17. Nc4+ Ka6
Stardust opts to go for a mating attack rather than recapture the bishop, which is slightly inaccurate, and Goode's rook gets in. Stardust then loses a bishop, but Goode gives the wrong check, without enough time to calculate out the riskier Nd7+ (if the king tries to hold onto the bishop with Kb5, a4+ pushes it away, and Kb4 is met with Bd2# - a ridiculous turn of the tables)

18. h3 Raxg8 19. Bd2 Bh5 20. Rf5 Bb6
Black can now consolidate their pieces, up a queen for two pawns, and this position is completely winning, as white doesn't have enough firepower for a mating attack.

21. b4 Bc7 22. a4 b6 23. b5+ cxb5 24. axb5+ Kb7
Stardust finds the crucial 22. b6, securing an escape square for his king, and Goode's attack falls flat - his initial one was the only engine-approved one, and now it's just desperation, trying to justify a queen sacrifice.

25. Be1 Qd8 26. e5 Bg6 27. Rf1 Qg5 28. Bd2 Qg7 29. Bf4 Bf7 30. Nd6+ Bxd6 31. exd6 Qd7
Goode gets his bishop into the game, but it's too late - he's forced to trade off his knight, his passed pawn is blockaded, and all his chances are gone.

32. Rfe1 Re8 33. Rf7 Rxf7 34. dxe7 Qxe7 35. Rf1 Bd5 36. Bg3 Qd7 37. Rf4 Rxh3 0-1
Low on time, Goode lets his rook get traded off, and down a queen, white is lost - Stardust decides to end this game with style, sacrificing a rook for a mating attack, and before it can occur, Goode resigns.
