LIVERPOOL, DARMEN - All Greens manager Riley Mac Pharlain has announced that Ildefonso Daube has been removed from his position as the number one goalkeeper for the Darmeni national team. Daube will be replaced by Morris Mathews after allowing ten goals in the last three matches, including losses to Huayramarca and Tanirinthia.
With Darmen tied with Osterhalten on nineteen points and four points seperating both nations form second placed Tanirinthia, the contest for the third and final qualification spot in Group 11 is shaping up to be a close one. Fifth placed Bohr just three points behind with eight matches remaining, Mac Pharlain does not want to take any chances with a leaky goalkeeper in net.
"Ildefonso has been an important part of this team in my time as manager," commented Mac Pharlain at a press conference prior to Darmen's match against Epicly Amazing Giraffes. "But his recent form is simply not good enough for this level of play and its clear to me that a change needs to be made. I'm sure Morris will do well."
Mathews has played in three matches so far in this qualifying period, making sixteen saves while conceding just four goals. Six years younger than Daube, Mathews is a lively goalkeeper, never afraid to charge out of the six yard box to challenge an oncoming opponent. His speed, agility and jumping ability make him a tough obstacle for opposing teams to overcome.
While Mathews will be reveling in his new position, the change in goalkeepers also opens up opportunities for others, namely Teresa Thompsett. Thompsett, who plays her domestic football at Royal PFC, making her Mathews chief rival in Series A, will make her international debut in Darmen's upcoming match against bottom of the table Epicly Amazing Giraffes. The Epicly Amazing Giraffes, who spend more time in their favorite nightclub Forum 7 than playing football, have scored just one goal in ten matches, setting up Thompsett to have an easy chance at a clean sheet in her debut. Corina Mendoza will start in goal for Darmen's second match of the weekend, away against Sea Peoples League, meaning that Mathews will have to wait until the next qualifying weekend to take over as #1 goalkeeper.
Darmeni fans will be eagerly awaiting to see how all three keepers do following the shakeup in front of net.
