Part 1 – So far so good, but not that good yet.

Exuberant Superintendent T-2000/2904-3 Surveillant Clarissa Alanis Star Breya « La Amoureux Chéri » Millie Taissa Butterfly Mélody Coraline Jolijn Trini Clementine Hollie Samantha Zeta Harumi: I would say it has been a while, and of course, my apologies for the lack of input from me as, well, as the Captain and the Founder of the team! I will admit that I have been a little busy elsewhere. Oh yes, even after the NSSCRA is over, I still have businesses and matters to attend to on a regular basis, such as the nation and the autonomous region that I am responsible for. I can handle them, naturally, for I have the capabilities! Going to the World Cup itself, I believe that it is getting pretty good, for the time being. It’s not the best results, granted – because I have a feeling that we might not make it past the qualifications, once again, likely. Too many losses, I do wish get more draws even if we did not get the wins.

Oh and of course, yes… I have to work on the national factbooks, these have not been updated, and that they are still overdue for some. It is something what we called a “small retcon” around these parts, haha! The VDF, Valentian Defense Forces, have not changed that significantly, it’s more that I believe that we should have a few more unique options other than the standards that we have seen a few times. This is a little different from Hyperzicht having just one model of each type. In the military (along with civil defense forces), there are many, many roles that needs to be fulfilled. Hmm, well, that is for me to worry once again! It is a little funny too. If there are no deadlines and such to follow, typically we sort of just fall off, isn’t it? Deadlines can be beneficial in such scenarios, but at the same time, I am also grateful that the Valentians have not been putting really tight schedules and tasks for me to do!

After 8 matchdays, I think we can officially and collectively conclude that Group 1 is the Group of Drunk. If it wasn't already obvious from the fact that the Dhemixians have as many wins as they do losses this time around, that point is further hammered in by the rest of the group's performance. Let's take a look at how the whole group is doing, shall we?

Pos Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Oberour Ar Moro 8 5 2 1 24 19 +5 17
2 Gyaromia 8 5 1 2 18 11 +7 16

7 Dhemixia 8 3 2 3 21 16 +5 11
8 Sajnur 8 3 1 4 15 18 -3 10
9 Thaeloria 8 1 0 7 9 24 -15 3
10 Melbergia 8 0 1 7 10 27 -17 1

Upon first looking at the group, one might say, "That's it? A competitive group with the usual one or two stinkers and the rest in a close bunch at the top? That's not a Group of Drunk at all!". That, however, is where they would be wrong. When you put a rank to the names, you'll realize that the pot 2 is entirely off the podium, and the pot 1 is in a mere third place. The teams to take their spots? Why, only the pot 3 and pot 8 teams. Furthermore, the entire group (that are relevant) are all within 7 points of each other. The real point that truly hammered in how cooked this group is was the fact that the Serpents won a game by four. With a squad like this, that should be entirely impossible. As you could probably guess, the first goal of the match was scored by the Dhemixians, only, on themselves. That's right, in the third minute, Wesley Williamson picks the ball up, attempts to throw it, and it subsequently slips out of his gloves and into the net. With how many own goals he's scored this tournament, he might as well just sue the glove manufacturer. At some point, it's no longer his fault, and I think we've reached that point. Regardless, Jonathan Obisana is Himothy Himmerson XVI, and scores FOUR GOALS. Sure, Williamson ruined the clean sheet himself, but at least the Dhemixians still get their three points.

Against Doubeia, the Serpents play one of the worst games of football ever. The defense forgets how to play defense, the offense forgets how to play offense, and Ambrose Demidov dominates. Save for a lucky Baker free kick, the Doubeians were playing the defense of their lives, and probably should've had a clean sheet. It was almost as if the Serpents had lost all momentum from the game before, which probably did happen considering Doug McMahon is coaching. At the very least, the Dhemixians get one game of amnesty with a low-ranked Gyaromia, before they have to face the brick wall that is Ko-oren, but neither game is free by any means. We'll just have to see how they recover.

Edsmontik 1-1 Abanhfleft
World Cup 99 - Matchday 7

First Half - 1:40PM, Friday, 10/3/2031, Abanhfleft Home Stadium, Abanhfleft

"Five minutes until the first half ends!"

The Edsmon Eagles, in the middle of a match with Abanhfleft, had a tied scoreline.
The now even more rotated squad was doing okay, but not too well.
Possession was lost many times, and certain players failed to keep control during some situations.

Ghreksbvy had managed to score a free-kick in the 20th minute.
Abanhfleft came up with a quick response through a goal scored by Aquino, leveling it in the 29th minute.

Now, there were 5 minutes remaining in the first half.
It was all chaos.
Players were all over the place, passing, dribbling, and shooting.
They were also making mistakes.

Up front, the Edsmon forwards placed powerful shots that went nowhere.
In the middle, the Edsmon midfield was 'selling' all of their passes.
And over in the back, the Edsmon defense kept slipping on air for some weird reason.

Maktholm tried to lead the team in the right direction, but it was getting nowhere.
Everyone was seemingly doing their own thing.
And then, the whistle blew.
Halftime had finally arrived.

Halftime - 1:56PM, Friday, 10/3/2031, Abanhfleft Home Stadium, Abanhfleft

"Today, you've done well."

It was a surprisingly supportive start to der-Ghavyr's halftime speeches, something that wasn't at all expected.
Many times before, the Edsmon manager had said some questionable things.

"In your dreams."

Okay. I was wrong. It was not a surprisingly supportive start, but something to just catch the players' attention.
While Dav went on about the failing everything situation of the first half, many Edsmon players just fell asleep.
Well, not actually, but they weren't listening.
The tension between the players and manger was now at an all time high.

"I'll say it here, right now. You all have to do better."

Many Edsmons looked at him and rolled their eyes.
When they did better, Dav der-Ghavyr didn't care.
There was no point of trying when the manager only saw the bad.

Off in a corner, der-Stoiuben was sharing his Kuser Trading Card Collection Booklet with the other keepers.
Luckily for him, der-Ghavyr was too focused on his monologue about terrible performances to care.

"Hey, I didn't know you collected." Lankiv said.

"Well, I do. My friend from school back in the day got me into it." replied Elterhad

"That's nice."

"Hey, this booklet is pretty full. What season of the FDVL is this?" Recha asked.

"It's 2003. I've finished collecting the 2002 FDVL season and let me tell you this. That was a pain. Since it's so old, a lot of cards were expensive."

"Yeah, I heard the Super Shiny version of Vykren der-Tylvan was going for $100+ on some websites." Lankiv added.

"That must have sucked. How much did you pay?" der-Zyfragken asked.

"I didn't, that was one of my first cards actually. Handed down to me from my father, who loved to collect everything." der-Stouiben said.

"Wow, lucky." the two other keepers said simultaneously.

Elterhad tucked his book away and picked up his water bottle.

"Anyways, let's see what der-Ghavyr is whining about now."

World Cup 99 - Matchday 7

Second Half - 2:31PM, Friday, 10/3/2031, Abanhfleft Home Stadium, Abanhfleft

Fotserr charged down the wing.
His goal, a delivery of the ball to the net had to happen.
He swerved, rolling the ball past his opponents and scanning for his teammates.

One,
Two,
Three taps.
One defender down.
He kept going, dribbling farther down the wing.
With one stop of the ball, he threw off that same defender who was chasing him.

Then he kept going.
He dribbled some more, tapped around, and then scanned again.
With one strong kick, he sent the ball up in the air.
But it wasn't a shot.
It was for his good friend Bervaign.

In one header, Vlakish Bervaign sent the ball right into the corner.
The ball soared quickly, curving right to the corner.
Cardew of Abanhfleft dived, trying to catch the ball, but it wasn't enough.
The ball soared right into the net.
2-1, Edsmontik.

Post Game Interview - 8:30PM, Tuesday, 10/7/2031, Touve Suberarenae, Touve, Austrankank, Edsmontik

"So, we've had many players state that you've been overly rough in attitude towards them. Is this true?"

Reporters bombarded Dav der-Ghavyr after Benzor Norseden was substituted off for "standing up for himself."
According to the defender, he was forced off the starting lineup after halftime despite his good performance because he disagreed with the way der-Ghavyr was treating his players.

This wasn't a good look for the Edsmon manager.
He now had eyes on him.
Fans watching online were also pretty mad, flooding forums with angry questions about der-Ghavyr.

But obviously, Benzor wasn't the only mistreated Edsmon player.
Everyone else on the Eagles' team was facing the rude side of der-Ghavyr.
No care for wins, all the care for draws, concedings, mistakes, and especially losses.

"Well, I might have been rough, but it's for the improvement of the team."

The reporter looked at the manager like he was crazy.

"Norseden told us that you planned to boot players from the starting 11 if they made even small mistakes."

"That's- that's untrue." der-Ghavyr stuttered. "I wouldn't judge on mistakes; I always judge on overall strength of the players. For example, ow they do in games, if they contribute or not."

More Edsmon reporters began to swarm in on the manager.

"Norseden claims that you had planned to boot Javarqa for slipping on the grass. Is this true?" one reporter asked.

"Many fans have been wondering why you look at your players very angrily when they make slip ups, instead of being encouraging like you were in the past. Would you provide a reason?" another reporter asked.

"Are you secretly conducting a social experiment, or actually feeling hatred to your players?" a third asked.

der-Ghavyr was getting overwhelmed.
He had finally seen a problem with the "new method" he had come up with before the World Cup Qualifiers.
With a little hesitation, he shouted,

"No comment, no comment."

And he left the reporter station, walking back inside of the stadium.

"Wait, we have questions! Are the claims true, false?"

"Is Norseden a liar? What do you make of this?"

der-Ghavyr could only hear the questions ringing in his ear as he left for the Edsmon bus.
It was as if someone finally knocked some sense into him.
He now saw what was wrong.

SPORT: Embarrassing home defeat to Drawkland as Knights pick up crucial points against Sarzonia

LUTZKAMPEN: The latest international break was one of mixed emotions for the Knights and their fans. We had two vital and difficult matches to play, and both at home, so the pressure was high. Drawkland and Sarzonia were some of the strongest sides in Group 14 and perennial competitors at this stage. Expectations were nonetheless high as we needed to show strength and will in battling them. Both games were to be played at the Kampenthal Stadion in Lutzkampen, which is the largest-capacity seated football ground in the country. Hahn, in his pre-match press conference, said that the goal remains qualifying and, most importantly, to display that his side is capable of competing against the very best in the world. He also highlighted the success of the Kwrpanian side, who were mostly unknown before this Qualifying campaign but have gotten off the mark well. Hahn expressed his gratitude to the strong support he receives from the fanbase and that the high standards of the fanbase push the Knights to perform better. Ironically, it was the very next game against Drawkland that was our worst display in this Qualifying campaign, bar the draw against Olastor. We kicked off the game with poor pressing intensity and bad tactical awareness, ceding an early advantage to the Kick Corps. At this level, there is very little room for error, and we were almost immediately punished with Benbow rising above our defenders to head in a beautiful cross by Cross. Things went from bad to worse rather quickly, though, as a mistake by Felix led to us losing the ball to Dillian, who charged forward. Benbow's run attracted our centre-backs, clearing space for Octavia to make a run into the box and finish off Dillian's inch-perfect pass. Within twenty minutes, the Kick Corps had scored two goals, and the home fans had lost all of their pre-game enthusiasm. The Knights had on many occasions come back from behind to equalise and rescue the result; however, no such conviction that it was possible in this case was visible in the team. This lack of conviction or spirit was worrying as we continued to play poor football, giving up the ball too easily and not working hard enough on the pitch. The Kick Corps scored their third goal right before halftime, as the result was almost certain now, and fans could no longer try to hide their disappointment with cheers. The half-time break came at a critical time for the Knights as they pulled a goal back in the second half through a Roy tap-in following great build-up play by Faraldo. This goal was nothing more than consolation, however, as Drawkland wrapped up a comfortable 4-1 win with a late 85th-minute goal. This was a disappointing performance by the Knights and also our first loss in the campaign. We were in seventh place with only ten points, and it seemed that our aspirations were slipping out of reach. Hahn did not hold back in his post-match press conference and was clear in expressing his disappointment in how we played. He highlighted that we needed to show more grit, and losing our heads every time we concede would not help us in such a competitive environment. Critics of Hahn jumped on this opportunity to question his leadership, and while premature, such criticism could burden the team and Hahn if we do get back on track.

The battle for the Knights was an uphill road from here, though, as our next game was against Pot 1 side Sarzonia. This would be an even bigger test, and after the disappointing performance against Drawkland, concerns were high. Fans were not sure if we would be able to cope with the skill and quality that the Stars had to offer, and if the heavy defeat against Drawkland would demotivate the side going into this game. Hahn was confident in his side and assured everyone that they had learnt from the game a few days ago and were approaching the Sarzonia game with a fresh mindset. This was good to hear, and it was clear that Hahn had also made significant tactical adjustments. The Knights were far more defensively solid against the Stars, as the effort was on point and tactical adjustments were working well. Hahn had dropped his fullbacks into a more defensive role to hold down the wings and prevent any openings for the opposition while looking to control the play through the midfield. While defending, no player was excused from pressing duty and was required to play hard for the team. This worked, and we were looking incredibly competitive with both sides trading blows with neither team being able to land a punch for the entire first half. It appeared like a dull game to most viewers; however, the tactical showdown would have been a treat for most fans. The game seemed destined for a level result until Favager produced a moment of pure magic as he slipped through Sarzonia's defence and found himself face to face with goalie John Wells. Favager did not flinch as he confidently knocked it into the back of the net for the only goal of the game. This was a great performance by the Knights in contrast to what we saw a few days back. While not the most convincing win, the most impressive bit is the opposition against whom we have recorded this win, which shall count the most. Hahn would be proud of how his team have bounced back from a tough defeat against Drawkland to win against Sarzonia at home while also giving the home fans something to be joyful about. This important win meant we were now fifth in our group and were just 2 points off second place. With half of the campaign having passed, we were still very much in the hunt for that spot in the World Cup, which would be a dream come true for fans and players alike. In the next international window, we would be on a road trip of sorts, first playing the Francobalkan Peninsula and then Grand Exultia away from home.

Part 1 – The Balls-out action that is not faring so well.

Clementine Lizbeth “Athena Mk. 3” Hinata Tanaka: Please do allow me a second to process. And… okay, done! That is much better! These past matches have been definitely a challenge for us, and we have been matched with the likeness of nations like Hapilopper. It is definitely a honor, of course – even if we lost to them quite badly. After eight matches, however, the odds of us getting past the qualifications is… slim. 2 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses. Hmm, it is not exactly the best- that’s an understatement. I am a little overwhelmed by the numbers and the figures, and I do wish that I can ask Clarissa for help. It’s not that she didn’t want to, I just have not asked her just yet. Still, I think there is a bright side to this. In particular, there are 18 matches to play, and we will be at the 9th match soon. Halfway there. With us ending up second last in our group, I do not want to be too optimistic – which is a bit ironic as it comes from me – a Valentian. It’s just that I do not want to give my players too much of a false hope. Hope is good, just not the false one at that. I will finish going through the data – a lot of it, as I have mentioned – and then I’ll ask Clarissa for advice. It’s quite funny… typically I would have see myself managing other teams, but it’s the two from Alanis Star, Clarissa and I, who are managing both the football teams of Valentine Z and Alanis Star. The little quirks of being a two-planet power with autonomous regions under its control, hehe. Anyway, other than all of these, the change of strategy is still not needed. It has been established that we cannot do defensives, and that right there is going to restrict the options by a large margin. After this, what I need to do and should have done is to change the team formation. Something that screams “We’re going to kick forward and that’s what matters the most.”

Rambles WC99 IV (Cobrio and Legalese)

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Jun 01, 2025 2:52 pm

The Random Rambles of a Jaguar - WC99 Qualifying Edition
with Killian Looker

This campaign was certainly starting to ramp up now for the Jaguars of TJUN-ia...and after six games, we were still unbeaten in Group 12 with a record of 4-2-0. In a world where Top 3 is the magic place to be in, things have certainly gotten off to a good start for David Seems and Li Xiu Ying. But as the halfway point gets nearer, the pressure is starting to mount - pressure to not slip up, pressure to ensure that you don't look behind you and keep focused on what is ahead. Two more games lay ahead, and that meant two more opportunities for chaos... so what happened next?

The Games
At the Tukari Kaita National Stadium in Camaron, #114 Cobrio welcomed the Jaguars to the home of the Panthers. They may be ranked outside the Top 100 entering this tournament, but Marvelous Koleoso had done a brilliant job thus far of taking this team to 3rd entering this game...so we knew, this wasn't going to be as easy as the rankings would suggest. This game was traditional football vs the Àkoleoso system that the Panthers were running, and it was safe to say that the hosts gave us a hard time of it in this contest. Their fluid way of playing made any attack a wildcard, and so it was no surprise when Clarence Burke took the lead after only 15 minutes. We weren't down for long, with Diana Sharafutdinov and Stephanie Barrientos (via a header) taking the lead before half time, but then the enigmas arrived again as Dieumerci Pourrien came on, dribbled past both Helena Mikazawa and Zune Than Mo Nu before finding the simplest of backpasses to Christopher Chilcott to finish off one of the best goals you will ever see. 2-2 it would finish, which was fair enough - but now, we had slipped to 2nd for the first time.

With that in mind, it was time to welcome #76 Legalese to the Estadio Universidad Carlandas - 6th as it stood, but only 4 points behind. EUNCA was prepared for a passionate battle between a team that attacks and an attacking team, with Holly McNulty seemingly preferring to go for broke no matter what. We expected a war...but what we got was a walk in the park. All we needed to do, apparently, was just allow most of the possession to the visitors, counter when they fucked up and win the game from there. That is exactly what we did, with all four of our goals coming from the counter from four different players - Paek Un-hui, Stephan Fiedtkou, Belle Whitewater and Stephanie Barrientos. 4-0 it finished, about as easy as you like!

Reaction
Two interesting games, one where we got a point out of a tough spot and another where we took a Top 100 team to the woodchipper - something TJUN-ia rarely does in this sport. With the halfway point coming up next, many reflected on where we stood at this point - 2nd by a point to Saterun, with a 3 point cushion to 4th. Not too shabby at all, but the rematches will be where our fate is decided and everyone knew it.

What's Next?
8 games unbeaten just about, but now we enter a critical phase. A road trip to face the bottom of the table, American Generations, ends the 1st Half before the 2nd begins at the Estádio do Pacífico against 8th placed Sharktail.
From now on, things are going to get tense.
GO JAGS!

DOUBLE LOSS AT AWAY THIS QUALIFIERS
Hawthorn, Baggieland and Nangang, Yuezhou

Ayala was right, it's not easy to beat them both. They have more experience than the Bulls in World Cups. It was a disappointing matchday for the Bulls as they took on the shame against Baggieland. In the first half, the Baggieland defense was too tight for the Bulls, leading to a 4-goal extravaganza in Dartmouth Hill, much to the joy of the fans. But not as much louder than the LBDT and the Visayans abroad with them. But before the last Baggieland goal, Agcaoili and Viray scored their own goals in both 60th and 72nd minutes. But it wasn't enough for the light and dark blue boys to keep up with the defense. "Well, I was right about Baggieland.", says Ayala. "We did some tactics to defeat them, but none of them worked. But we hope we could find a way on our next match against Yuezhou." The result? It's the same as their first qualifying match in Iloilo. The Yuezhous are too strong for the Bulls as they made their home crowd proud by scoring three goals. But there are some attempts by Uemura, Viray, Zaldarriaga, and Yee, even though the keeper was good as Ortega was. "I won't complain, but this is straight humiliation.", says Ayala. "We might have a solution to 'beat them' but it doesn't always get the job done. So, hope our next matches will be great unlike this match." The Bulls will face both Aleirave and West Vdara home and away to take their spot either for the main event, or the Cup of Harmony. Will the Bulls made it to these two, or just neither of the two?

The Turtles drew the top seed. Just like that. And not because the home audience had tilted the balance in their favor: the lads had just gone to the Kytler Peninsulae, hawked a little at the retractable roof of the Barstone Stadium and then nicked a point off the favorites to add a cold shower to a chilly evening.

As is usual, success has a lot of fathers. All sorts of reasons were thrown around. After a slower start, manager Archibald Price had managed to make them gel together as never before. The form of Juan José Sevilla, author of the sole goal, was reaching unseen peaks. The tactical plan had been impeccable, forcing the opposition to try and cross it into the box and aerial combat could be seen as the one element in which the Anewkansan backs kept the high ground over their opposition. Parker Stafford did an excellent job as a stand-in for Stu Miller in that regard.

There were also more realistic reasons cited. The loss of the selection at Flight 134 showed, not just in the quality of the players but in the absence of routines when things failed to go their way. A few wondered whether key player Joke Feltkamp had been ready for a return in the starting eleven: her performance did not point at a full recovery and as the audience stirred after the surprise opener, she almost disappeared from the game. In attack, the Kytlerian line-up lacked efficiency with Packard doing a poor job in convincing his manager to play with an out-and-out striker. Maybe, a small minority claimed, there was no factual relation between cause and result, indicating that it was meaningless to assign logical reasons to illogical outcomes. More philosophical approaches noted that youngster Peter De Beukelaer completely missed his timing when Sevilla attempted from far out, resulting in the unexpected 0-1.

A handful of days later, those same Turtles hosted Germanic Cat and were lucky to cling on to a point. The opening half was a tight affair but as the game progressed, only good defensive work saved the day. Replacement goalkeeper Izak Powell confirmed the positive signals shown at club level with a clean sheet but that was about the only positive takeaway from a draw that cost us the chance to climb up the ranks. Remarkably, everyone agreed about the reason why Anewkansas did not win.

That woman with the laptop on the bench.

No one could exactly explain why she was the reason that Pershing Major kicked our biggest opportunity on the outside of the post or how she had instructed Marcus Puckett to aim every free kick about three meters wide. But still. It was a matter of time before the press caught on about a ‘stranger’ among the Anewkansan staff and in their insatiable thirst for gossip, she became the bad luck charm of our selection. And so, Price was tasked with a difficult matter at the end of his work day. He had kicked the can down the road as far as it could go but tomorrow, they would board for Kimi-Suomi. It would be Family Night in the Nest, but Price felt that he had to take the less family-oriented road on this matter.

“Anni Ina, could you spare a second or do you need to go?”

It was a stupid thing to ask. Ever since she had been assigned, she was the first one to appear at the office and the last one to leave. After a week, Archibald had requested security footage just to make sure that she left at night.

“Here is the thing. I think it is better… Well, the organisation believes that you should not join us on the plane tomorrow.”

She stared seemingly through Price, something which the latter recorded as disbelief but was a genuine search for the motivations of the national manager. By now, she had discovered that about 80% of his actions were driven by fear and she guessed (correctly) that this was the case here as well.

“Do you want to end my assignment to the federation?”
“No! No, no, not at all, it is just… The whole football world is still a little superstitious, you know. They do not always handle new things well and then you come in and…”
“Is this because of the draw to Germanic Cat? I mean, they did not execute our strategies properly, at all. Everything, from using the number advantages down the center to using a laser pointer on the wall during free kicks, they…”
“No, that is not it, Anni Ina.”
“Is it the press?”
“No… Yes… I mean, it is all of it together. I think Anewkansas is not entirely ready yet for data-driven football and we will have to feed it to them in smaller doses, I am afraid.”
“Should I make fewer analyses?”
“Please not, Anni Ina, your work is good, it is just…”
“But it works, no? Against the Peninsulae, every prediction worked. Our analysis of De Beuckelaer showed his weaknesses, the strategy to handle Packard proved correct, letting O’Reilly direct his goalkicks wider to open up the opposite side: they did it and it all worked.”
“Yes, but then they did not…”

Price halted but he had said too much. He did not want to lie.

“They did not what?”
“They… They did not know that these were ‘laptop ideas’. Not everyone takes that as well and it is better if we…”

The manager sought for the right words.

“You know, with kids, when you have to give them a pill? Sometimes, they won’t swallow it. And then you smash it into a peanut butter sandwich and it goes down like nothing?”
“So, I keep up the work but just make sure no knows I made it and it just seems like you took a sideways look at the opponent to discover that Maxhuni and Jantunen rely a lot of Svonsson in midfield, so if you take out the latter through cutting specific passing lines, the Eagle-Owls could get in trouble?”
“Ehm… Yes?”

She did not need to speak for Price to know that she would do as asked, but never again with the same joy or passion that had made her work so electrifying.

“It is just temporary. I’ll see to that.”

The little tremble in Price’s voice confirmed that he said this in the spur of the moment, rather than as the conclusion of a firm plan. Anni Ina packed up for the day, put her backpack on and walked to the door.

“I’ve put the free throw routines on the share, as well as the penalty kick reviews.”
“Thank you, AI. You’re the best.”
“Oh, who will be on goal tomorrow?”

It sounded like a throwaway comment but Price knew better. Another bullet he had to bite tonight. He took a deep breath and then clenched his teeth.

“That will be O’Reilly.”
“Oh.”

And with that she left. Yes, O’Reilly, of whom every possible data point screamed that he was worse than the alternative and not because Powell was so exceptionally talented. O’Reilly, that came out of the laptop time and time again as the broken cog in the machine. O'Reilly, who he had placed on the bench after her advice and who had not been missed in the line-up. But also O’Reilly, goalkeeper of Pine Street FC, the club that had its origins in the Prosecor Agency which had its firm grip on the domestic order of the state.

For many nations, the World Cup 99 qualification is the time of various sensations and unpredictable results. But, of course, not for Ralsalin. For many national teams, this World Cup cycle is usually an emotional rollercoaster with many sensational ups and downs. For Ralsalin, the emotional rollercoaster is abolutely simple: defeats against higher-ranked teams → victories against lower-ranked teams → defeats against higher-ranked teams. Nothing unusual. It seems that the boringness and simplicity of a Ralsalien life infected the football again.
On the other hand, those absolutely logical and expected results are definitely better then upsets against lower-ranked teams that could've been. Moreover, if to pay attention not only at the final score, it's hard to call the Ralsalien performance "boring". The lower-ranked teams were absolutely dominated by The Knights, and in the matches against higher-ranked opponents, Ralsalin is showing a courageous game, usually fighting untill the last seconds. In the same style, the games against Kelssek and West Barack and East Obama were played.

The first game against the group leader ended with a defeat, but even despite it, Ralsalin was able to score three goals - the 1/3 of all goals conceded by Kelssek.

The eighth matchday - a home game against West Barack and East Obama, deserved more attention than even a game with the highest-ranked team of the group. An Entire Rinkan Grandmaster Kotarlok Arena gathered to watch this game. The journallists even created a name for this match - "The Obama Derby". And this is just because of one man - Alexander OBAMAwartin, who started the game in the main squad. Many expected an exciting game with Obamawartin to try and score against the numerous Obamas. Unfortunately, even if Obamawartin tried as hard as he could, he failed to score, and this match ended with another defeat, 0-1.

Ratings for the match against WBEO (0:1):

GOSENS - 6.0.
It's hard to blame him for the conceded goal. Saved the team from the dangerous shots of Pogama and L. Chobamya.
SUTA - 5.5. The left-back of the team again played worse than he potentially could.
SHINDEBERG - 6.5. In the first half he fixed several mistakes of Suta. Was a participant of several Ralsalien attacks.
TÕRU - 6.5. Second best of the defensive players. His actions saved Ralsalin from additional Obama goals.
ANIKO - 7.0. The best player of the team. Helped both in the defence and the attack, being active all around the pitch.
ASTAFJEVS - 5.0. A failed match for the midfielder. Neither fixed the failures of his teammates, nor had success in the attack.
HEEN - 5.5. Did nothing in the attack, but had a decent performance in the defence.
KIRTIMAN ASIER - 6.0. Did some wonderful combinations, showed a decent activity. But his finishing ruined everything.
VON ERLAID - 6.0. The captain had a decent game, but again failed to create really dangerous chances.
MINSEN-DWARASEN - 5.0. Failed the match.
OBAMAWARTIN - 6.5. The best Ralsalien attacker in the game. But despite several dangerous moments, OBAMAwartin failed to score a goal against OBAMAS.
HADKA - 5.0 Completely failed to strenghten the game and had a mistake that could have easily lead to the second conceded goal. Only Gosens saved the team then.
VEERMAN - 5.5. Did nothing.
MENON - 5.5. He tried, but couldn't strenghten the Ralsalien attack in the last minutes of the game.

Even if Ralsalien National team showed as much effort as they could, they still couldn't do anything against the skills of the higher-ranked opponents. Simple "trying" is not enough to get a win or just some points. You need to have something other. But what?

The next game would be played against some very familiar face. Poafmersia. For a second cycle in a row. This exact nation, against which The Knights managed to secure their first victory on the international stage. The players know it, and this game would be the crucial one for Ralsalin, as our athletes definitely want to secure some points again.

INTERESTING FACT:
The total result of Ralsalien national team in the World Cup qualification is 10 victories and 12 defeats.
After 22 games, the Ralsalien fans are still waiting for the first ever Ralsalien World Cup cycle draw.

Nearly Halfway...

Postby Kimi-Suomi » Sun Jun 01, 2025 3:47 pm

Nearly halfway through this process and so far, and the Huuhkajat of Kimi-Suomi have managed to pick up ground after going winless in their opening three games. Not exactly "sekoituksessa" but close enough to where good fortune could catapult us right into the thick of things in Group 13. Esko Laaksonen was impressed with the fight this team was giving after such a poor start, but the wars just keep on coming. What will be our next one?

Blue Night is another new innitiative that we came up with to try and bring some atmosphere to home matches, where blue is the dress code and that is it - so it was same to say the Galaktien Colosseum was not the place to be if you were called the Pohjois-Puolan Unioni [The North Polish Union]. We wanted to show the world we can produce an atmosphere and on this night in Lumikukkulat, we did exactly that - with three goals sending the crowd into a frenzy not seen here in a while. Poor Hieronim Kalinowski simply couldn't cope under the noise and the pressure this crowd was giving as Jason Jenner-Pokka, Topias Maxhuni and Remu Jantunen secured a simple 3-0 win for the home team.

Then came the tricky one - Kytlerin Niemimaa on the road, a team who had lost so much before this tournament had even started, but were fighting for every point with as much passion as any team could muster. It was admirable to see them continue to fight like this, so them winning made the most sense...with Sylvia Villa Rodriguez scoring the only goal.

6th place, 6 points...we could certainly do worse. Anewkansas are next to Pesä for Family Night before we start the 2nd half of NSSCRA Warz with Alanis Star.

For the first time during the entire qualification cycle thus far the Wanderers secured all six points that were on offer from the two games during the window. It came on the heels of Thor making some adjustments to the starting lineup to try and find a bit of a spark to get the team plating up to the standards they had set over the last two cycles. While it was not the best performances from the squad over the two games, there was marked improvement that leaves a bit of optimism that the team will be able to turn their campaign around in the second half of qualifying. With ten games left to play during the campaign, there is still the opportunity for the team to finish first, but the aim is ensuring a top three finish and qualification

A lot of the trouble here at the midpoint of the campaign has been the side being quite dreadful when traveling away from the dual islands. The form away from home has been ghastly and if the team could reverse that fortune in at least a small way in the second half they should continue to rise back up the table after their plummet following matchday five and six. The other notable issue has been a lack of goalscoring that flies in the face of everything that the fans of the side have come to associate with the team under Thor's guidance over the last several cycles. It has been truly mesmerizing to behold and baffling in the same sense, players who have racked up goals like they were going out of style with club and country suddenly losing their shooting boots this campaign.

Fortunately the team gets a reprieve with the schedule after a pair of away games during the third window with a pair of home games in the upcoming window. One of those os going to be a tussle with mid 50 ranked Saterun, a team pi ked out before the campaign as a threat to the Wanderers. It is a huge six point encou tee thay could send the team into the second half of the campaign on a high and with momentum, an all important resource in qualifying cycles. There is not expected to be a reversion of the changes Thor made to the lineup from the last window, with the side finding a pair of wins. Laszlo seems to be playing the role of the super sub off the bench for now and with his pace, could be a key factor and work better that way. For now the team battles on, trying to shake off its early misfortune with a mid campaign rise back to the top om the back of a surprisingly dominant defense.

Archalit National Trials, Week One

"Hey, Kanoa," he said, playfully jogging into the room, "I got a question from one of the players."

"What's up?" She turned to face him, finally turning away from the monitors after an enduring session of focus.

"They asked..." he began, flipping through his notes, "ah, right. How exactly does the scoring system work?

"Oh, well that's simple enough." She proceeded to explain the system used for providing scores for the athletes.

Instead of using a traditional scoring system based on exact performance, such as gaining X points for getting Y time in a test, the athletes started at 50 points and gain/lose total points according to how they do. The exact amount of points that their total changes by depends on two factors. These are how far away their total is from 50 and how far away their performance is from the median performance of the group. In particular, the athletes gain points according to the number of half-standard deviations away from the median they are +/- how many points they are from the center, divided by ten, and rounded down. While this formula is convoluted (and, as Kanoa admits herself, incredibly rushed), this gives an estimate on how the athletes are performing day-by-day. It becomes harder and harder to gain points at the top, and likewise becomes easier to climb back from the bottom. Nevertheless, athletes are constantly rewarded for performing substantially better than their peers—one who is at 98 points and demonstrates a performance in the 99th percentile will, despite taking a 4 point drop for innate ranking, gain 6 points for performance and will reach the maximum possible score of 100. This also means that, as the worst athletes funnel out, it will become harder for the top athletes to maintain their high scores in the rankings.

It is to be noted that the bottom scorers do not necessarily get eliminated immediately. In the first week, the top 50% of scorers (150 athletes) will be safe from elimination, however 50 athletes will still have the opportunity to avoid elimination according to their performance in the upcoming trial.

Despite Everything: Episode I

Postby Saint Eleanor » Sun Jun 01, 2025 5:19 pm

OOC: I sent Quebec this RP in the hope that he would pre-clear it, but he DMed me "Let's post it first" so that he can read it more easily, so I have done so. 8) Note that McNeil is a Tumbran actress, but one who gave Quebec permission long, long ago - before his retirement from football - to use his character for non-Benedetto-starring movies.

Headnote on faceclaims (IC = OOC):

  • Zoe Craft (Angelique) = Sydney Sweeney
  • Iago Benedetto (Michael) = Jared Leto
  • Katherine Schnabel (Rebecca) = Dianna Agron
  • Armand Turner (Jacob) = Asier Exteandia
  • Joanne Willetts-Cho (Sarah) = Rosamund Pike

  • Lucas, i.e. Sarah's son and Angelique's occasional co-conspirator, is yet to be cast

Group of Six meeting (LXVII) --- SAINT ELEANOR 2-0 Natanians and Nosts
Participants: Gentle Breeze, Reniira Clevinger, Stephen Mitcham ~ Bridget Coombe [C], Cathy Winchester [VC], Arielle Richardson [ballot]
Location: Global Kebabs; North Seville district, Saint Eleanor city, EXT

I wonder what all of my lovely teammates must be thinking about our result. Reniira said "it was massive" and everyone else seemed to agree with her, in typically hushed tones. This was yet another good team performance with not an awful lot going for it, although particular praise was lauded upon Kavezalea for being the real pivot of the attack in a match that.

Loyo are fifth in the table, but I do not doubt that they would salivate at a potential win for the exact reason that it would make the group infinitely more exciting. This is not what we want! We will be going "all hands on deck" for this one, with the traditional starting eleven and substitutions being made as necessary; there are to be no changes to our usual strategy or tactics. (Reniira sarcastically noted that "this strategy did us good in Baker Park," even though she was actually quite enthusiastic about only losing by one goal in such a good environment for CBP!)

The decision wasn't quite unanimous. Everyone is in general agreement that we need to be as strong, confident, and capable as possible on the day. While Cathy and GB pushed for a bit of forwards thinking, perhaps even a 4-4-2 in Cathy's accounting, this was overruled by the majority - in particular citing Loyo's own preference for a midfield-heavy 3-4-1-2. It makes sense to counter it as such; if future Saint Eleanor manager Arielle Richardson was calling the shots for herself, she would most certainly be a bit cautious and maybe wait until we get an actual goal before deciding to do anything more.

Despite Everything
Episode I

An office somewhere at Lagarce-Sonamoo Pictures' headquarters in Quebec - Tuesday 8th October 2013 (Eleanorian time)

Everyone knows who Elizabeth Lawton is. Everyone in Saint Eleanor who buys more than five novels or so a year, that is; that's a sizable amount of the population, but not quite enough.

"I've already commended onto you the services of Zoe Craft. She's an Eleanorian, like I am. She's 24 years old, which I surpassed before we were taking part in international football. You might know her from some of the bigger movies to have come out of Saint Eleanor recently, although we're more of a TV nation than a film nation, so I don't think you'd have heard of any of them. She was also on Channel 4's Teardrops, if you've seen that? Sex worker who co-opts the police for her own ends, with limited success. 100,000 eyeballs on her in a nation of 600,000."

People do, at least, know her name. There are many people who no doubt do not know who exactly at Lagarce-Sonamoo is responsible for negotiating with her - if only for want of notoriety.

"Despite Everything... that is an interesting title. I'm going to read the script later, not now. I'm aware you have it with you already, so to speak. Is there anything that compelled you to come up with it?"

"Craft didn't suggest it, if you're going to be asking that. I've explained that I write novels... thoughtful but popular, so to speak. I actually don't write much romance, so I figured that this would be a nice challenge. But I also think that the Eleanorian sense of humour is well-known."

"Is this a romance movie, a drama or a comedy, or something else?"

"I don't think I could write any comedy other than darkly-sarcastic. I think that would be the case here. Romantic, yes. Dramatic, yes. The genre lines are a bit fluid; they tend to be with my work. Or at least I've been told they do. I'll need to pitch it to you more thoroughly."

"What about the title?"

"It's a movie about resilience, more or less."

"And what about the resilience?"

"Let's imagine it like this. You have Jacob Randall - early to mid twenties, at university. His mum Rebecca, his dad Michael. His girlfriend, Angelique, who's played by Zoe Craft - she's working for the university bookstore. Now, Rebecca and Mike have divorced. Rebecca is still single. Mike is now dating, or soon to be dating in any event, Angelique's tutor at university."

"Does Miss Craft speak any French? I assume she does. Angelique is a beautiful name... also very French."

"Yes. This is a Terranean-language film, though, not an Azertienne-language film. I wouldn't be negotiating with you otherwise."

"Of course. We do try to make everyone comfortable."

"Anyway, Michael is dating Angelique's tutor, Sarah McDougall. Sarah has a son, Lucas. He isn't dating Angelique himself, nor is he interested. Angelique is actually dating Jacob. However, she is really in love with Michael. He's convincing Jacob, his son, to blame Rebecca for their divorce. Turning him against Angelique to facilitate her falling in love with him, so to speak. Meanwhile, Michael is hitting it off with Sarah and is enjoying bonding moments with Lucas. Lucas, in turn, pleads Michael to just cut Rebecca off. Rebecca hates everyone involved in this, as you can tell."

"I can indeed, Elizabeth."

"Rebecca's enemy above all enemies is Michael. To that end, she spies on the university's football team. Luckily for her, Jacob is in it. Unluckily for her, Lucas is also in it. And she decides to hot-tail Lucas back to Michael's home, and formerly her own marital home. Now, instead of destroying Sarah and Jacob, she destroys the relationship between Lucas and Angelique."

"This is bad."

"Depending on who you ask. Now Michael can run away from Sarah. He correctly figures that Rebecca's trying to burn bridges with her, which means she and Jacob leave his orbit. which means Jacob will no longer be able to trust Sarah, who's going to be completely isolated, without a hope in the world. At the same time, Jacob himself is in love with Sarah. The one person he needs is the person who's going to go away."

"So the father distrusts his son's girlfriend? Who's also his stepmother? I'm not sure I follow."

"You will follow once it's been filmed."

"Okay. We'll see."

"Jacob is in love with Sarah. Angelique is in love with Michael. Not the other ways around. Michael knows Jacob and Angelique. Now he has to continue working with Lucas to finally bury the hatchet with Rebecca and facilitate their twinned twin flames. Now, Jacob knows of a party at the university. He invites Angelique, who he's still reluctantly on good terms with. She reluctantly invites Lucas, in turn. Angelique and Lucas go together to this party, as friends, not as dates. There, they meet Rebecca, who no doubt was also invited by Jacob."

"Inferred?"

"Yes. They confront her, she pretends to complain about the breakup with Lucas, he actually complains that she was trying to undermine Michael's relationship with Sarah. Then they get hot-tailed back to Michael and Sarah's home to escalate the complaints, in dramatic fashion. Ultimately, Lucas has enough of the argument after Jacob announces that he's in love with Sarah. Surely he wonders how his mother could betray him and his new dad like this. He then deliberately starts a fire."

"That is... a bit cliche."

"That's where the fun is. Rebecca is left alone. Lucas is also left alone. They are annoyed, betrayed, loveless, and without a roadmap. The survivors are - of course - Jacob and Sarah, with Angelique and Michael. The end of the movie is spent tying all those little bits together, reaffirming their true loves, and leaving Rebecca and Lucas in the dust once and for all."

"What about the other plots? We can't just single-track everything all the time."

"The main plot is Angelique and Michael. The subplot is Jacob and Sarah. Obviously there's a bit of a focus on how Jacob and Lucas bond at university, how university life is more generally, and so on. It's providing context to everything else; it moves the plot on but it's not really essential to it."

"Wasn't Sarah married before this?"

"Yes. No further information is needed, but it can be added if necessary."

"What are your thoughts about the budget?"

"I would say fifteen million pounds, give or take a few. You could probably turn a good profit out of the sheer wildness of it all; that appeals to Quebecois audiences and my little twisted mind."

"I agree. Anything else that you think needs resolving?"

"Actors and directors. I simply CANNOT direct. Also, you may ask yourself what the point of the movie is. It's that true love transends social and mental boundaries. A 25-year-old - or, in Zoe's case, 24-year-old - can fall in love with a 55-year-old or something like that. Romance is in, and I am trying my best to let people know, even if I'm not much of a romance novel person myself. I think this is my first serious screenplay."

"Thank you. We have a deal. It's always great to see new people walk through our doors. I will tell the CEO, we'll let your agent formally sell the script to us, we will find more people beyond just the bookshop lady, and let you know the outcome."

"And thank you. I hope that this won't be as wild as the movie itself."

The same office, two days later

"We've been doing some initial scouting, Elizabeth, and I believe I have found a good actress for your movie."

"As the course tutor or as mum?"

"April McNeil. We'd like to have her replace Miss Craft, if that's possible. You might know her from Gonk Tuah, last year's smash hit romantic movie from Paddington Limited. She's Tumbran. so some further negotiations may be needed. She's said she won't take part in this movie if Iago Benedetto is interested. April is famous. Iago has groupies all around him. It depends on how much you're willing to lean into the purism of the film, versus the fan-favourite side of things."

"Absolutely not. I am writing a rom-com, not an X-rated porno."

"Paddington's hard work in creating that film should not be degraded as such. Do you have any other compelling reasons to keep Craft attached to the script?"

"I know her well enough to assume she can do a good job with this one. You did watch her demo tapes, didn't you?"

"I think I did. I'll keep her on for the time being and see if Benedetto's interested. Also, you don't want to direct this, am I right?"

"You are right."

"I will find a director. If I cannot, I will let you know, but the actors should not be an issue, especially after Benedetto joins."

The same office, three weeks later

"Well, Elizabeth... it is good to see you again. We have a lot of takers, let's say."

"Is the CEO one of them?"

"Yes. Please remember that he has commissioned the film and your agent has already sent us the script. We've sent it around to a few people. Iago Benedetto would be great as Michael - he's big, bruff, popular, and maybe a bit annoying. You know him."

"Heard of him, but I don't know him personally."

"Katherine Schnabel is going to be our Rebecca; she's pretty, and pretty angry. Armand Turner as Jacob, or Rebecca and Michael's son if you've forgotten; in real life, the son of Heo Myeong-Yoon and Rico Sierra. You've heard of them. He's with Montesierra."

"Are you selling the movie to Montesierra? I have a reasonable understanding of the Quebecois studios. Armand is good and consistent, and a bit wild, when he wants to be. Joanne Willette-Cho has been dragged out of her post-Acropolis retirement to appear in this one; she's more of a television person, a bit like Zoe, but also addicted to cigarettes. We will ensure that the laws are followed."

"We'll see about that." We'll see about that indeed.

"So you have quite the cast on board, other than Zoe, despite the disappointments we've had on that front. The characters who aren't as relevant to the plot are going to be sought out in time, but we can get Katherine's husband Oh Wook-Whan on board if necessary."

"We'll see who bites. I hope I can trust whoever's been cast onboard."

"By the way, we've also tried to seek a director. We didn't succeed."

"I can do it if necessary."

"That can be arranged. We got a few rejections. One of them was Maurice Elko-Simard, my fellow Quebecois enthusiast. He's having a few issues with wrapping up the Vampwolf Chronicles trilogy over in Drawkland."

"Did anybody die?"

"Not that I've been told, but I'll let you know of any news. Either way, speed is of the essence, so nothing on that front. Maurice has... ideas for how the film should go on."

"Ideas? Am I going to have to rewrite the script?"

"That's the film industry's expectation, Elizabeth. I'm looking forward to your rewrite. Get it in when you can."

"Christmas is coming up in Saint Eleanor."

"Yes, that would be a good deadline. I look forward to starting production once your festivities are over - and once the weather improves, of course."

"How very relatable."

And that was just about the only relatable thing that was brought up in the making of Despite Everything, the doomed-to-be-a-smash-hit new movie from the same people who brought you a bunch of mid-budget independent movies that you also probably don't remember unless you're a true fan... and, as it turned out, Moohangwedo studios.
Group of Six meeting (LXVIII) --- Loyo 1-0 SAINT ELEANOR
Participants: Gentle Breeze, Reniira Clevinger, Stephen Mitcham ~ Bridget Coombe [C], Cathy Winchester [VC], Tina Falconer [ballot]
Location: the New Cinema; Central district, Saint Eleanor city, EXT

MAJOR MATCH EVENTS: Satoru 81. This was the sucker-punch in a largely uneventful yet close-fought match in which both teams were only metaphorically at each others' throats. "If we're choking here, we'll probably choke again in the finals" (~ Tina).

LESSONS LEARNED: "Seldom yet notable: stay focused all the time" (~ Stephen); "we should have been a bit more courageous, hopefully we can get Devonta on that count" (~ Bridget). This was largely a good game defensively, but an underwhelming one attackingly, as all sides were consistently thwarted until the sticky, perhaps unwarranted, end; "you can ask Arielle, but that Satoru goal really did sting in every way possible" (~ Tina).

RECOMMENDATIONS: The United States of Devonta are unlikely to pose a threat: "six points from eight games says it all" (~ Reniira); "if they can defeat Baker Park, then they can defeat us, too" (~ Tina). They have not produced a roster since World Cup 83, fully a quarter of a century ago. However, it can be assumed "with monumental difficulty" (~ Bridget) that they will continue fielding a 4-4-2 diamond, much like Occidental Olympic tend to play. The usual 4-2-3-1 should suffice, but Lydia in for Kichiro and Keith in for Rachel are seen as the most obvious swaps.
After the meeting, we watched Love Your Children, which is a locally-produced drama - with a bit of comedy about it - centred on a mother who feels like she has to do whatever she takes, including robbing the supermarket she works at, to care for her three young children. AA-rated for language and threat, although surprisingly not for the occasional deployment of guns and other violent weaponry; parental guidance recommended, although we are all very much adults. Needless to say that "it objectively slaps" (~ Reniira).

MOVING FORWARD: This was "almost an underwhelming result" (~ Cathy), but not so much that it's going to demoralise the team - although Tina was a bit of a negative Nancy about it all. One point ahead of the pack, with the top three all heading to the World Cup, is absolutely not a bad place to be - although "I wouldn't be surprised if we landed in the Cup of Harmony again, which would probably be nice" (~ Bridget). Stephen will be taking notes ahead of our return to Zirahuen, and we are all hoping for our fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, despite the occasional pessimism.

Why? George Mitcham, General then and now, cofounded the National Liberation Front in 1971 to demand a free Saint Eleanor. He got his wish in '75 after a 15-month war: becoming President, appointing notable NLF friends and some charity's executive director as VPs and calling them legislators. He has retained power through oil money; zero income tax; free healthcare, schooling, public transport - and markets; tolerating dissent on apolitical matters; allowing private gun ownership (with plenty of training) to protect against future invasions; high-quality PR; and football.

THE LAST DIPLOMAT
Chapter Five - The New Normal

Sebastian noted that in addition to the problems of trying to recruit and run a foreign affairs department for a nation that has had no foreign nations in existence in over three centuries, his only reference the passed down teachings of a lineage from the last true diplomat of Tanirinthia which was essentially a game of telephone started by a man with a heavy proclivity for booze whose nation was in the business of invading or giving ultimatums about invading, made his task very much learning on the job. What he noted however was in addition to that he had to deal with diplomacy in the multiverse, and specifically within the WCC organsiation. A prime example of which he was facing now.

Rapidly approaching were matches against Huayramarca and Damukuni, now despite much effort on his part he had no success in engaging with anyone in either country about arrangements for these upcoming matches. Now you would think perhaps this would mean that those matches would end up being forfeited, however you what be wrong, on the dates scheduled for the fixtures for the home match against Huayramarca a team would simply appear claiming to represent them seeming to have the correct documentation from the WCC, possibly with supporters turning up unannounced meaning we have to deal with them on the day, and as for our away match against Damukuni against on the specified date the Tanirinthia team would travel to a location play a match against a team with the right documentation, however we would have no idea of numbers of citizens that could travel to support.

You'd think that was complication enough, but then you add the temporal synchronisation element of the multiverse, and sometimes effect comes before cause, it may turn out that they have responded to my requests and after the dates have passed if I were to look back I would find everything went smoothly, the teams presented had records, players who had previously represented their countries. Supporters may have lined the streets of St Cirith, and we ourselves had a great deal of support that travelled off world.

Perhaps he was too hard on the diplomat of old, after all dealing with all this, a stiff drink or three was a rather compelling thought.

Chapter 1: Welcome to Sugar Creek
Chapter 2: Cupcake Awakening
Chapter 3: Death by Dessert
Chapter 4: Sugar-Crazed Carnage

Chapter 5: The Sweet Survivors
Doug and Lucy darted down a frosting-slick alley, gasping for breath. They were coated in streaks of pink and caramel, shoes sticking to the ground with each step. Somewhere behind them, the faint sound of giggling and sloshing frosting echoed closer.

Lucy clutched Doug’s arm. “We can’t outrun them forever!”

Doug glanced back, spotting a swarm of cupcakes rolling over the pavement, their caramel tentacles flailing wildly. “We need to find help. Someone has to know how to kill a cupcake!”

Sheriff Bob McGravy bursts through a pile of cupcakes, using a road sign as a shield, his revolver drawn and splattered with frosting. “You two! What in the seven-layer fudge cake is going on here?”

Doug gestured frantically. “The cupcakes are evolving! They’ve fused together—some are huge, others have these weird caramel claws!”

As if to punctuate his point, a monstrous hydra-like cupcake slithered down the street, its multiple caramel heads snapping at streetlights and mailboxes.

Bob fired a few shots, but the bullets passed harmlessly through the gooey mass. “This is useless! They’re just—sugar! I can’t arrest sugar!”

Before Doug could argue, the whine of an engine cut through the chaos. A dented exterminator truck, coated in splattered frosting and makeshift sugar shields, rolled to a stop. The door swung open, and out stepped Harold Crumble, Sugar Creek’s grizzled exterminator, his hair dusted with powdered sugar, wielding a modified leaf blower strapped with a vinegar tank.

“Looks like y’all have a little pest problem,” Harold drawled, surveying the gooey battlefield.

Lucy’s eyes widened. “Harold! You’re here! What—what can we do?”

Harold yanked the trigger on his blower, shooting a fine mist of vinegar at an approaching cupcake. The cupcake simply licked the nozzle and oozed closer, unimpressed.

“Never thought I’d say this, but these pests are mutant confections. We’re gonna need more than vinegar and traps,” Harold muttered.

The group backed into the wreckage of the bakery, frosting crunching underfoot. Lucy frantically flipped through old cookbooks, hoping for inspiration. Sheriff Bob half-heartedly radioed for backup—static crackled uselessly. Doug paced, wiping icing from his face, while Harold tried to rig a flamethrower from a propane tank and an icing nozzle.

Doug groaned. “We need a miracle, or we’re frosting on toast.”

At that moment, the bakery doors burst open dramatically. In sauntered Gwyneth Kale, Doug’s long-time nemesis. She was pristine in white yoga pants and a designer crop top, sipping a green smoothie. Her lips curled in disdain as she surveyed the sticky carnage.

“I told you sugar was poison. Now look at this disaster,” Gwyneth sneered, stepping delicately over frosting splatters. “And of course, Doug—you’re right at the center of it.”

Doug’s jaw dropped. “What the—you?”

Sheriff Bob raised an eyebrow. “Who’s this?”

Doug scowled. “Gwyneth Kale. Sugar Creek’s self-declared ‘wellness queen’ and clean-eating cult leader. She’s been trying to shut down my bakery for years.”

Gwyneth sniffed, waving her reusable tote dismissively. “And now your sugar obsession has doomed us all. But you’re lucky I’m here. Someone with real discipline needs to fix this mess.”

Lucy bristled. “You mean you’ve got a plan?”

“Oh, absolutely,” Gwyneth purred, stepping forward. “While you all were wallowing in frosting, I’ve been researching. If we want to stop the cupcakes, we need to fight fire with fire.”

Doug folded his arms. “Meaning?”

A sly smirk curled on Gwyneth’s lips. “We’re going to bake something even deadlier than the cupcakes.”

The group froze. Doug’s stomach twisted. Sheriff Bob’s jaw slackened. Harold’s hand trembled on the propane tank.

“W-what do you mean?” Lucy whispered.

Gwyneth’s eyes sparkled wickedly. “I mean we’re going to bake a counter-dessert. One so terrifying it’ll send these sugar fiends running.”

Outside, the rising sun illuminated a terrifying sight—the cupcakes had evolved further. Some had fused into towering frosting beasts with licorice tentacles. Others rolled along in sticky caramel-coated masses, absorbing debris like sentient batter. A giant cupcake hydra towered over the square, caramel heads snapping at fleeing townsfolk.

The frosting tide surged closer to the bakery.

Gwyneth raised her smoothie in a toast. “Who’s with me?”

The others exchanged horrified glances. But as a particularly massive cupcake beast slammed into the bakery’s walls with a squelchy roar, Doug sighed.

“This is insane,” he muttered. “But what choice do we have?”

The cupcakes howled outside, a chorus of sticky, slurping menace.

Gwyneth’s smirk deepened. “Let’s get baking.”

Zwangzug's e-Lipogram

A nil-all draw for Zwangzug, away in unsung Kaumann, was not a bright finish to World Cup qualifying's first half--but, fortuitously, our squad is still atop its group. Our staff was happy to find that Mulyana Karisma, in goal for his host nation, had a fantastic match, saving many shots from Brian Spand-Maunk and his capital pals, which is particularly galling for that all-out-attacking club. For our part, Sohini Dravid--a product of coach Varadarajan's hard work nurturing fullbacks in Sharag--was crisp, tackling and subduing attacks from Rudolf Fritz and Supri Nishikido.

This coach (as you know, Bob) is infamous for his adoration of statistics and computations that work for bat and ball sports, but possibly, for football, not so much. "Why do you doubt my brilliant analytics?" Varadarajan said (or, it was in that vicinity, anyway). "Look, anybody can carry out a basic division and show you a 'good pass' to 'trying to pass' ratio. But a cautious fullback, who will hardly pass to anybody, will wind up scoring highly in such a tally, on account of not having any 'failing to pass.' What you want is a way to quantify long runs and cutting off balls that a lazy or low-quality substitution couldn't hunt down. Using my long and hard study of a typical qualifying match, among low-ranking nations with poor ability, I can say with accuracy that Dravid is about as good as two point four six anonymous fullbacks from Gray Flaglandia. But you know that, obviously, Bob."

Did this approach actually aid his Namiri club, which was two points shy off of its capital opposition for a championship in our First Division's campaign fifty? Narayan Thorlakson wouldn't commit. (Paraphrasing again), Thorlakson said: "If our approach isn't paying off, Varadarajan knows it, and will point at a graph and say, 'I want to try a drill or run plays that I didn't do last month.' So if I'm in a slump, I'm not just sitting in my own gloom and sulking about it, our coach will say 'try a distinct approach.' It's important not to spiral downwards on my own. So I'm thankful for his charting ability, insofar as it's good for shaking us out of ruts. Its actual statistical utility? Um, I'll wait for sports journalists to crunch a lot of data and find out, thanks."

Lobsang Pokhriyal, from Sharag's district rivals, was similarly glib. "If it works for him, that's good. You know what my city always says; it's not hard for forwards to look at statistics--racking up goals and counting is trivial. But how can anybody know if a wingback or a fullback is playing poorly? I think in a bunch of nations it's just journalists grading 'holistically,' that is, pulling digits out of butts. Look, I can pull a digit out of my ass too, today captain Gainsborough was four-fifths of Audioslavia's John Ryan and just a fifth of a poultry yolk. I only know who John Ryan is thanks to his alcoholic drink. Say what you will about Varadarajan, his math is not this arbitrary."

SOCIALIST REPUBLIC of OSTERHALTEN

Citizenship and Immigration

Since its founding, Osterhalten has been a moderately diverse nation, and though the vast majority of Osterhaltiennes can trace their lineage in the nation back to the six main groups present at its founding, there are still large immigrant communities from all around the world living in the nation. The largest diasporas are located in Osterhalten's cities on the Ardean Sea, such as Dreamcliff and Lascoux, though there are large communities in Ingny and Comyard as well. Vigny and Hauberg have not seen immigrant numbers in recent years, though they were hubs in the initial waves of immigration in the early 20th century. Save for a brief period from 1961 to 1965, Osterhalten’s borders have been relatively open for migrants and refugees. Notable diasporas in Osterhalten include people of Kanzlian descent in Dreamcliff, Crpostranians in Comyard, and Azorians of Oberour Ar Moro in Lascoux.

It is estimated that 7.5 million, or 7.2% of Osterhalten’s citizens were born in a foreign country, and 18.3 million more are second or third generation immigrants, mostly from Iovan Union nations. As of last year, Osterhalten accepted 324,529 immigration requests and 64,390 asylum requests, up approximately 25,000 and 4,000 from the previous year respectively. There are estimated to be 50,000 undocumented immigrants in the nation. The largest community by numbers are Crpostranian immigrants, with approximately 1 million first generation and 3.1 second or third generation migrants, respectively. Migrant numbers are split roughly evenly between the three major regions of Osterhalten, with 34.1% of foreign-born people living in Richelieu/Western Osterhalten, 32.7% living in Windsor/Central Osterhalten, and 34.2% living in Vichelin/Eastern Osterhalten.

52.2% of Osterhaltiennes believed in maintaining the current amount of migrants allowed per year, while 28.5% believed in increasing migrant numbers, 16.3% wanted to reduce the migrant population and the remaining 3% remained without an opinion or undecided. On the subject of refugees, the majority of Osterhalters (59.2%) believed that Osterhalten should accept all refugees fleeing war that came to its borders, 47.4% believed that the nation should accept all refugees fleeing persecution, and 43.9% believed all refugees fleeing destitution should be accepted.

There are numerous visas available to begin one’s stay in Osterhalten, with the most common being Study Visas, which require admittance to a university in the nation, and Employment Visas, which require a job offer from a Osterhaltienne cooperative or state business. Staying in Osterhalten after completing a degree from a study visa is encouraged in order to maintain an educated, driven populace. The civics exam portion of citizenship is waived for those who have completed a degree through a study visa.

Osterhalten follows both the rule of blood and rule of soil citizenship: any child with at least one Osterhaltienne parent is granted Osterhaltienne citizenship, and any child born on Osterhalten’s soil is granted Osterhaltienne citizenship. However, foreign-born parents of Osterhaltienne children are not granted citizenship unless they undergo naturalization. There are two main pathways towards citizenship in Osterhalten for a non-Esportivan Union adult: either marriage with an Osterhaltienne citizen, or naturalization via 8 years of residency in the nation, B1 fluency in any of the country’s six official languages, passing a civics exam, and being gainfully employed for at least five of the eight years, with exceptions for study or disability. Once one acquires citizenship, they unlock access to an Esportivan Union passport and the privileges on the continents that come with it.

slight crossover in the return here

Postby Drawkland » Sun Jun 01, 2025 8:24 pm

Short recap in case you didn't follow the previous RPs from this storyline
The Elite Eleven, a group of eleven Drawkian athletes who obtained their modern fame through exhibitions and taking the reins as Drawkland's national soccer team for several cycles, returned to the pitch as the men's team in the summer Olympic Games. The most notable of the Elite's abilities, besides embarrassing themselves on the field, is their incredible endurance and versatility. They revealed a few years ago that this was not due to outstanding conditioning or genetic luck, but rather extensive training done over several hundred years, as all eleven members of the team are immortal, similar to Drawkland's founding leaders.

While their immortality was now public, there is much information about immortals which must be kept confidential for security reasons. Many years ago, the Immortals Accords organization was founded to assist Drawkland's immortal residents with keeping their identities or histories secret due to this need. During the Olympic Games, though, the Elite experienced what may be a breach. Very personal information about Dominic Southers, one of the Elite's members, was posted in an oft-derided tabloid in Drawkland. Normally one would ignore such sensationalized stories, but the information was far too personal and accurate to be mere coincidence. Worried about the ramifications of a potential breach, Elias Keys of the Elite took it upon himself to track down who could've obtained this information. More importantly, he wanted to know why.

Elias did manage to find the "how" - a keepsake gifted to a member of the Elite while spectating events at the Games appeared on second look to be some sort of recording and transmitting device. With the help of Grid Corps national team member Leo Cross and the son of Drawkland's founder, Lerocav, Elias tracked down the receiving end of the transmitting device in a motel in Hamilton, Electrum. They didn't find the person who planted the recording device, and couldn't track it any further without blowing their cover. Their leads came up dead, and they were left hoping it was an isolated incident.

It wasn't an isolated incident. Months later at the Independents Cup, Nicole Warren of the Kick Corps received a similar keepsake, a keychain with her name and number on it gifted from a fan. After inspection, it was revealed that this too was recording and sending information to another device in the hotel. Jaxon Madison of the Elite decided on the course of action. They'd try two ways to track down the perpetrator: intentionally give incorrect and specific information in range of the device to see if that information would end up anywhere in the future, and try to physically locate the spot where the device was sending information.

That information did come, but not for months later, and not the information they expected to plant. A rather gossipy tidbit about Sarah Arrowsword's love life was revealed in a tabloid, and with no logical place that information could've come from, it implied that it came from their "intentional" leak, even though it wasn't the incorrect information they expected to see leaked. After months of failed investigation, the Elite Eleven resorted to more direct action to track down the stalker(s). Ross and Elias did some digital espionage and found a couple names connected to the mysterious leads. Would those leads actually materialize the culprit, or lead to another dead end?

KAYO, DRAWKLAND
"What's wrong, babe?" Mike Rodney asked his girlfriend from his seat in the shaded patio.

"Nothing." Nicole Warren sighed, looking absentmindedly at the crowd walking back and forth on the walkway.

"C'mon, I know you better than that." Mike leaned forward, flicking Nicole playfully on the arm. "You're upset about something. Is it the draw with Gnejs? Listen, I know some people might knock you for that card that led to the game-tying free kick, but you made the right call. It was that or they get a clear shot at the goal. It's like committing pass interference on a deep pass in the end zone. At least give the team another shot to defend more closely."

"It's not that," Nicole replied flatly.

"I thought you just said it was nothing." Mike raised an eyebrow teasingly.

"You caught me." Nicole finally looked over, tilting her head with a ghost of a smile. "No, I'm fine with the draw. Could've done better, could've done worse. Though I would've preferred a clean tackle to clear it. Would've really hyped up my home crowd."

"So what is it then?" Mike reached for Nicole's hand across the tabletop, which she obliged.

"It's been almost three years since the whole stalker thing happened. Nearly two since Ross and Eli actually found that lead from hacking the servers, or whatever. And yet we still haven't found anything."

"Ah, yeah." Mike pressed his lips together awkwardly. "I mean, it was years ago at this point, and nothing's happened to any of us. Maybe it really was just creepy tabloid writers looking for an extra scoop. If it was something more sinister I'm sure something more dangerous would've happened by now."

"I know, I know." Nicole sighed, looking back out at the crowd of people. "It's just that seeing big groups of people like this still worries me sometimes. I think I might've given myself a phobia or something, I dunno. It's not bad when I'm playing in a game, but out in public? I just feel like someone might jump out me any moment."

"Well, you know we're all here for you." Mike squeezed Nicole's hand to try and relay some comfort to her. A moment later he chuckled despite himself. "Y'know, if you're sketchy with crowds then maybe you shouldn't have recommended we all go to an amusement park this weekend."

"It's not all the time, just sometimes!" Nicole insisted. After a second of acting serious, she giggled. "Okay, maybe not my best work. But I heard that somehow half of you guys have never been here. I mean, it's Queen's Wonderland! Best amusement park in the nation, probably the world."

"Surely the girl from Kayo has no bias in favor of her hometown park." Mike rolled his eyes, then turned to survey their view from a restaurant patio. "It's pretty good. Pretty decent. I think my favorite indie park is probably Adventure Isle. Great weather all year round, great coasters. The water park is also top tier."

"Ugh. Basic." Nicole stuck her tongue out, and Mike responded in kind.

Cam Cross's eyes were squeezed shut. If she'd opened them, she would see a beautiful vista. A captivating view of the park, the lake, and downtown Kayo beyond the shore to the east. The view was great because it was also 300 feet in the air, strapped to a rotating ring of seats at the top of a narrow tower.

"You know that closing your eyes isn't going to make it less scary!" Jaxon Madison shouted from the seat next to Cam.

"I don't care!" Cam replied, her left hand firmly clamping Jaxon's right in between their harnesses.

"Not to mention it's a little absurd to be worried about any of these rides." Jaxon laughed. "I mean, what's the worst that could ha-WOAH!"

Jaxon was interrupted by the clank of the tower machinery above them, followed by an immediate drop. For three seconds, the circular carriage plummeted in a weightless free fall, before being "caught" by the pneumatic brakes and slowly finishing the descent back to the ground. Just like that, the ride was over.

"I hate these things." Cam muttered as she unbuckled her seatbelt and pushed her restraints off. Her legs still felt like jelly when she tried to walk, thankfully Jaxon was there to discreetly help with an arm around the waist. "And I hate you guys for making me go on it."

"You're so funny." Jaxon snorted. "You've played in front of millions of people, probably billions if you include TV. You've faced otherworldly horrors that no person should ever have to face. You also don't have to worry about death or permanent bodily harm anymore. And yet you can't handle a drop tower or some roller coasters?"

"The coasters are fine. Most of them." Cam countered with a pouting look. "None of that changes the fact that being way up there and falling straight down is rightfully terrifying! And for some reason I don't see you making fun of Sarah for not even going on it."

"I know what I like!" Sarah Arrowsword heard the last bit of the conversation as the pair approached her at the ride exit. "I can handle speed, turns, and the spinny stuff. It's the drops I don't like. Why waste my time waiting in line for a ride I know I won't enjoy?"

"I notice you were waiting for us at the exit. So basically you spent all that time waiting and instead got nothing out of it?" Jaxon cocked a brow.

"I didn't get nothing." Sarah raised her plastic souvenir cup. "I got a refill while you guys were in line."

"I'm really proud of you." Jaxon nodded in a mockingly solemn way. "Well, I'm off to drag Cam to Meteor Strike. Care to join us?"

"Uh-uh." Sarah shook her head. "See, that's another big drop coaster. Not having it. I guess I'll go find Nicole and Mike or something. Or maybe some of the mortal Corps girls. I dunno." She wandered off, clearly deciding she'll figure out exactly where she was wandering to at a later point.

"I actually am proud of Sarah a little bit." Jaxon murmured to Cam as they watched her walk off. "I mean, just running on soda for the day? Nice change of pace."

"Ah, yeah ..." Cam sucked a breath through gritted teeth. "I guess you didn't see the flasks she snuck in?"

"Flasks? Plural?"

"Yeah."

"Well, props rescinded." Jaxon sighed. "At least we know her liver can handle it nowadays."

"Hm." Cam replied, not sure what to say next. After a minute, she whipped her head around. "Hey, where did Ross and Eli run off to? Weren't they on the tower with us?"

"Not sure." Jaxon surveyed the area, not seeing his Elite Eleven teammates anywhere nearby. "You know them, they've got a whole circuit locked down to hit every ride at maximum travel efficiency. No time to dilly-dally."

"Silly. It's not like they're running out of time." Cam mused humorously as she and Jaxon walked down one of the walkways towards the huge Meteor Strike roller coaster. "Hey, speaking of those two, what became of the lead they got for the, uh, tabloid thing?"

"Well ..." Jaxon took another casual glance along the byway. "I don't think I want to talk about it here. But something did happen. Maybe ask them later, it would be better to hear it firsthand."

"Okay then." Cam shrugged. She wasn't as worried as Nicole about the entire situation, but that answer didn't seem to sit right with her. Why weren't they told about what happened when it happened? Thankfully, the fear of dropping 350 feet a half hour later occupied the forefront of her mind and pushed the other worries to the back for the time being.

Anticipating the need to modernise the fleet, The Szbedansk Shipbuilding Corporation engineering and design wing began to design the successor to the Snoek-class early into their careers. The latters engine troubles became an aspect the SSC wanted to improve. New and improved technology in boilers became the basis of the SSC's new design, specifically the Ardent-Hollowpoint GJ80 Three-Drum Boiler. It was an expensive and unwieldy engine at the time, and Ardent-Hollowpoints reluctance to share detailed performance reports further delayed SSC's project now named Ontwerp TBJ-8. When the GJ80 proved to be a faff, SSC turned to building their inhouse Three-Drum Boiler based on the schematics of the GJ80. In 1925 SSC managed to actually build the boiler Ardent-Hollowpoint failed to deliver, much to the latters dismay who promptly sued SSC (which the SSC won).

With a functioning boiler, the SSC got to work designing their destroyer. They ended up with a 1700 ton design armed with 6 torpedo tubes and 4 guns. Guns which Ardent-Hollowpoint refused to provide due to their boiler debacle. It was annoying enough that the SSC sued, and subsequently lost. But it wouldn't matter as Ardent-Hollowpoint split in December of 1925 into Ardent and Hollowpoint (2 different things), the former was more than happy to kickstart their new divorced life with a collaboration with SSC. By early 1926, SSC had complete plans and schematics for a destroyer capable of 32 knots and a powerful armament to boast. Just in time for Fleet Plan 1927.

Fleet Plan 1927 came around and the Kanzlian Navy did need more destroyers, in lieu of the fact that the Snoeks was proving to be too slow and weak for extended service. They also needed fleet destroyers for the battlefleet. 9 units were ordered and with some slight adjustments to the design, the first destroyer was laid down in April of 1927. The ships were named after previous Kanzlian Admirals of note. The 9 destroyers were delivered, but an additional 3 units was ordered and by early 1932, the Admiral class numbered 12 strong.

The Admiral class was primarily utilised by the Kanzlian Navy as fleet destroyers. These types are to provide screens for Kanzlia's battleships, coastal defence ships, and large cruisers. The Admiral class is excellently equipped for the task, boasting powerful armament even if modest armour. As Kanzlia didn't have to send its battlefleet in anger during active service, the Admirals duties were constantly shifting. Besides de Merwen who suffered a catastrophic explosion due to improper handling of ammunition during transport, the Admirals had a peaceful career. te'Zuylen, te'Wolphaert, and te'Broenstein were converted into radar pickets when their hulls were too old for active duty. Julia Lamert and De Kalkhoven became training ships. te'Krant, de Kalkhoven and te'Draag were constantly used for fleet duties with little to no break. When the battlefleet was reduced, they became escort destroyers like the rest of the class. de Laszerateur, Anna Joelszdochter, and de Groet was decommissioned early and cannibalised for spare parts to extend the lifetime of their other sisters. Julia Lamert was preserved due to her better conditions. The rest of the class was stricken in 1961.

Brusseldorf 2–3 Archalit
June 1st
Fennec Stadia, Casablanca, Brusseldorf

Brusseldorf posted a narrow loss to Archalit in their Matchday 9 clash. A winnable game against considerably lower-ranked opposition quickly slipped from the home side's grasp, as Archalit's front 3 were quick to expose Brusseldorf's defensive fragilities. An early goal from Madeleine Olson (9th minute) solidified Archalit's dominance with a second from Marco Fletcher in the 28th. With half time seemingly ages away, the travelling side looked to be making a clean getaway.

Hakeem al-Araibi has faced long-term criticism on his stubborn refusal to drop back in situations such as these - criticism which is by no means unfounded. The former Casablanca City manager still holds the dubious honour of steering the Foxes to their lowest league position in their long history. But, as Al-Araibi fans will be quick to point out, he did so whilst maintaining a positive goal difference - the Moroccan manager's teams are nothing, if not entertaining. With Al-Araibi barking orders from the half-way line, Brusseldorf slowly began to move and create more and more moments. A few close attempts gave the team much-need momentum and in the 45th minute a long cross from the right was sumptiously deflected into the goal by Brusseldorf's Marcev Steyr, the Archalit goalkeeper having not moved an inch. The referee brought the first half to a close, with Brusseldorf now looking like they had the momentum.

Unfortunately for the home fans, the second half began much the same way as the first. Gunner Reynolds silenced the crowd with a swerving long-range effort in the 50th minute, and any fight the Brusseldorfens had was immediately quelled. Despite transtition into an open, end-to-end affair in the closing minutes, the score remained 3-1. Approaching the 90th minute, Sarah Pickett showed some flair in the midfield with a couple of handy interceptions, but it was the young right-back Boronia who was finally able reduce the deficit. The youngster's run was untracked by Cash Diamond, who was outpaced by the Brusseldorfen substitute. It was only a consolation goal however, with the full-time whistle blowing immediately after the restart. 3-2 to Archalit, their heist complete.

Brusseldorf 0–4 Oscioru
June 1st
Fennec Stadia, Casablanca, Brusseldorf

Two straight home losses see Brusseldorf second-to-last in the qualifying tables. A disastrous start to the qualifiers sees Brusseldorf winless in 8 straight matches. Any hope of a better start to the second half of qualifying was soon put to bed as minnows Oscioru completely demolished a Brusseldorfen side in crisis. Several prominent footballing figures, including pundits and past players have called for Al-Araibi's head as his tactics seem to have been nullified by the newest wave of footballing upstarts. The beleagured manager still retains the backing of the Federation, but time will tell if this support is to last.

Oscioru's Lando Côté could not believe his luck as three defensive errors in the opening minutes gifted him a career-first, first-half hattrick. The third of three defensive errors saw Brusseldorf's Gimenza Azoulay red-carded, with captain Teddy Wolfenden taking his place between the sticks. Hakeem al-Araibi finally switched his team into a more defensive formation, but despite the full effort of the remaining ten Brusseldorfen players, they still conceded a fourth goal. The 252nd ranked side has now beaten Brusseldorf in both of their two meetings, a badge of disgrace which is sure to haunt Al-Araibi, even if he keeps his job.

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!

Come gather around you children of spring and let us continue spelunking the intricacies that is the tale of how The Prosaic Union of Gnejs ceased to be.

By now you’d be hard pressed to cast any doubt on that one star twinkling too intensely for comfort on the night sky as Union Prime Minister Tangeus Oxwald and his only son former NSTT player Arne Oxwald continued their heated letter exchanges concerning Arne’s life choices despite the two of them now residing in the same house after Arne moved back home into the Prime Minister Residence on Incognito Street in the eastern parts of Port Kejm. Some say it was a star in the constellation of Grus in the southern sky - perhaps some 1.7-magnitude blue-white star with a core of energy generating thermonuclear hydrogen fusion - that was the bearer of ill tidings on those faithful days; while Grus is Latin for some sort of bird, in the native gnejsiska the word rather means gravel, and it would indeed make some sort of poetic sense if a prominent member of that constellation would be the one acting as The Prosaic Union’s own ominous morning star. And yes, there was no denying that the ground trembled noticeably (clearly with malicious intent) on that day, and this surely contributed to making a strained father-son relationship even rockier. But I digress.

This is actually one of those instances where we can draw from firsthand accounts, because several of the letters exchanged between the Prime Minister and his son during these end of days have subsequently surfaced and make up centerpieces in memorabilia sections of collections dealing with the fall of civilizations all over Rushmore and beyond. It remains unclear how and why these letters ended up at the Baggieland flea markets and Taxhavnite antique shops where they were found by collectors, but it matters little. I’ve had the fortune of examining a few of these letters on my travels, and here I give you some of my transcriptions:

Dear father,

I am once again asking you to refrain from leaving recruitment folders from the Union Civil Defence and other such government agencies on my bed stand while I’m doing yoga in the backyard. After all these years one would think it obvious that the path of institutionalized civil service is not for me, and that rather I aim to serve the cosmos through other channels. Why do you persist in this endeavor of pushing me into a certain fold of employment? It cannot be that your grit stems from frustration about me being idle, for when have I ever not been employed? I am aware that you do not consider professional tennis a true vocation, but I believe that speaks more of you than it does of tennis! Are you worried about my financial stability? Do you have some irrational fear of having to support me indefinitely (especially now after those rather anti-social cuts to the welfare budget your administration just implemented!)? Let me assure you that such fears are completely unwarranted, seeing as I accumulated a hefty amount of prize money during my years on the international circuit, and my current activities of teaching kundalini yoga and pole dancing secures me a dependable trickle of supplementary income. If anything, I would almost dare to wager that my liquidity rivals, or even exceeds, that of your own; while a noble calling, civil service has perhaps never been the most straightforward way to riches! I would think this should all be evident through my many contributions to our common household. Are you aware that I have bought the ingredients for, and prepared, several meals over the last few weeks? Do you remember having cacio é pepe, perhaps? Courtesy of yours truly. That beautifully creamy carbonara? Me, again! Rather than continuing to pester me, I’d say a little gratitude would be in order. Besides, do you not have work to do? Judging by the news broadcasts there seems to be all sorts of problems around our land that should ideally interest the Prime Minister! Instead you insist on wasting your precious time on trying to micromanage my life. It’s sad, really. Seriously though, what’s all this talk about a proliferation of crises? What’s going on? Please give my love to mother.

Yours,

Arne

Dear Arne,

I can assure you that I am working. I do little besides working, actually; a concept of course completely foreign to someone like yourselves. It was your mother who left the recruitment folders you mention. I have no time for such trivialities, although I of course support your mother’s intentions of nudging you towards gainful employment. We only want what’s best for you, and it goes without saying that an honorable position in service of The Union is objectively better for you, your mother, the land - and «the cosmos», if you will - than galavanting around doing breathing exercises and maintaining your thick hair sausages. Of course I am aware of your attempts at culinary contributions, because who else in this house would make a cacio é pepe with the cheap taste of grana padano instead of a richly flavored pecorino, or a carbonara based on common cream instead of the proper mixture of whole eggs and yolks? Know that both your mother and I appreciate the effort - how subpar the results may be - but surely you cannot think these small gestures make up for a life of lost opportunities? You make your mother cry, Arne, and while I do not shed tears I do completely share your mother’s sentiments. Speaking of money is poor form, but I feel like I need to point out that I am in fact quite wealthy, and I am quite certain that I have more money than you. While I have no doubt the tennis compensation you received was perversely unproportional to the effort put in, I doubt it even comes close to rivaling a lifetime of diligent civil service, and besides I do not flounder my hard earned money on tomfoolery such as startups in the business of essential oils and bead necklaces; yes, I received that «tote bag» from your launch party (I will not bring the oils to work, but I’ll concede that the necklaces were popular amongst the other members of the cabinet and they asked me to extend their gratitude). These are indeed troubled times, the news does not lie. While I can’t divulge too much, I can say we are still unsure as to the root causes here, but the entire Union is experiencing very disruptive episodes with infrastructure failing and some places even crumbling without warning. There are considerable water shortages and something hitherto unexplainable is happening to our livestock. Do not speak of this in front of your mother, but this might very well be the biggest concern we’ve encountered since
The Great Root Vegetable Plague of the 1830’s. Speaking of your mother, she sends her love and asked me to remind you that she would greatly appreciate it if you wore pants during afternoon tea.

Yours,

Tangeus

Dear father,

Oh, how your words betray what a simple palette of taste you have! Grana padano? No, I only make my pasta using the finest parmigiano. I know many will tell you that it should be pecorino, but there’s a rancidness to its aftertaste that I detest and with my own recipe you get the sought after bite without the lingering putridness of ancient preference. I do base my carbonara on eggs, I’ll have you know! I only add a tad of cream to take the edge off; surely no harm in that! In all seriousness, these examples you describe sound utterly catastrophic. Are we safe? Please tell mother I’m wearing pants under my caftan. En passant, I am planning on making a vongole for tomorrow night.

Yours,

Arne

Dear Arne,

You are a child. Those bags that say «pre-grated parmesan» are nothing but ground up padano with a hint of the real thing. You are not using real parmigiana, trust me. If you did, you would likely complain about the meal having a «rancidness» about it (for the record, I highly doubt «rancidness» is a proper word). And adding cream to a carbonara is only something you do when there is a particularly picky child present, and even then you only mix it into the picky person’s serving, never the whole thing. Why? Because it ruins it, Arne. Taking the edge off? The edge is the point! As for the current events, I will not lie and say I am unconcerned; these are indeed trying times. However, let us remember some of the proverbs that have guided us for so long:
The Rock Abides and A Rock Sustains Itself. Be vigilant, but do not worry, son. Vongole sounds delicious; I have always favored your pasta dishes that come sans cheese. By the by, would you please pass the scones?

Yours,

Tangeus.

The Rock Abides. Yes indeed, it always had and it always would. The Prosaic Union, however, would not.
