For as long as either of us have been in this game, a cornerstone of the West Pacific’s philosophy and foreign policy has been to give our all to our allies. A political calculation in some respects, sure, but more than that a fundamental belief that it is the responsibility of any region to do right by its friends.

The Augustin Alliance and the New Pacific Order have been among the greatest beneficiaries of our steadfastness. We spent several months piling in Dawn and Narnia on the Augustin Alliance’s requests, subjecting our own military to the same risk of potential languish they found unacceptable when it came to supporting the Outback. We played a direct role in the rehabilitation of the NPO following the affairs of the Anti-Pacific Coalition in 2018, being the first region to renormalize relations with them (the East Pacific having never ended their treaty). When the resolution to deservingly commend Emiline seemed to be at risk, we were the ones to reach out and negotiate TCB’s support, something we paid for by offering to vote against the commendation of Tim, a clearly also-deserving player and then-TWP citizen. As Emiline’s commendation passed with less than 60% in favor, it was in all likelihood our decision to proactively secure major votes for the Augustin Alliance that made it possible. When Diplomatic Officer Haymarket Riot took an interest in the General Assembly, we not only offered our support, but our coauthorship to some of these earliest projects, lending our name recognition and political pull to resolutions in direct contradiction with our aims, policies, and values of National Sovereignty. In fact, we voted in opposition to our National Sovereigntist values specifically to support NPO and AA authors in the 300 days of Fujai’s delegacy twice as much as we voted for any non-repeal GA resolutions during the almost 900 days of the two previous delegacies. Even as the NPO actively stalled on the apology they had promised us, when they asked us to publicly defend their slamming of Xoriet over the BoM negotiations, we agreed—acting in good faith to preserve a relationship that we had assumed our partners were similarly invested in maintaining.

So, recent events were—more than just surprising or ill-conceived or pointless—they were hurtful. Such a sequence of events would be unacceptable from anyone, be they ally or enemy, but it particularly stung coming from those to whom we had given so much. That we had trusted so much. And when they forced us to release a statement to set the record straight after their public deception regarding the affair, they were indignant. Bitter that we had dared to correct their narrative when they had once again thrown the first punch by unnecessarily drawing this disagreement into the public eye. Then they went quiet. When their attempts at circumventing our communication failed and they were met with questions, criticisms, and concern, they turtled. When faced with the possibility of accountability for the wrongs, they hid from the public, their GCR and UCR allies, from the very people they admitted to us they owed apology to in the Outback, and indeed from us. Out of fear that approaching this matter with the same maturity and candor as our friends in the North would make them seem weak, they opted to put their hands in their pockets and wait.

Their silence gave us a lot of room to think. The core question facing the West Pacific was simple: what could our allies say? Was there anything that the NPO or AA could say that would somehow right their wrongs, that would give us even the slightest opportunity to believe that after two straight months of purposeful undermining, subterfuge, and wanton disregard, these alliances may be salvageable? We never really arrived at an answer. Instead, we realized that if there was anything they could have said that would earn our forgiveness, their silence proved they were not capable of delivering it. They lacked the strength, they lacked the sincerity, and they lacked the courage.

Even now, we do not regret what we have given to these regions. Though our efforts were clearly not respected, that is what we do for our friends. It is what we have done for others, and it is what we will continue to do for many more. Had we not done so, it would have been us who destroyed these bonds, instead of them. In a different world, I wish we could continue to work so closely with these regions—to whom we have been an ally and friend in every sense—but the West Pacific cannot lie to itself. We cannot call allies those who would betray us, and we cannot call friends those who would hurt us.

So it is with heavy hearts and sober minds that, in accordance with Section 5 Subsection 3 of the Better Together treaty, and Section 5 Subsection 3 of the Mythical Compact, the West Pacific must announce its withdrawal from both agreements. If the day ever comes that the Pacific and the Augustin Alliance once again place value in their word, their integrity, or their character, the West Pacific will remind them that we await our apology.

A very heartfelt statement from the West.

The West Pacific, throughout my time in gameplay, has always been a very task-driven region. Even prior to my delegacy in Perdition, I've always found the West easy to work with, because it was always a region where you could identify where you found common ground and could contribute to one another's interests. The Narnia and Dawn examples are particularly disappointing and relevant to realize, because indeed, a reason cited not to aid the Outback was fears of military stagnation, a risk the West was willing to take for the AA.

From an outsider perspective, it seemed as though the Better Together treaty was a cornerstone of Western foreign affairs in the post-Rahl era. To do what the West has done in supporting the post-2018 NPO and be treated this way recently is a shame.

Best of luck to the West Pacific in moving on, the Plains of Perdition are proud to count you as an ally.

Delegate Varanius' First Speech

Hail! West Pacificans and foreigners alike, I am thrilled to announce the beginning of the West Pacific’s 54th delegacy! First and foremost my complete and utter thanks to Fujai for the fantastic term now behind us. Fujai led TWP through some turbulent moments with both skill and grace, and without having the opportunity to work with him as closely as I have this last year I would not be as ready to take on the delegacy as I am today. He’s earned his break.

Now Fujai won’t be gone, of course. In fact, he’ll be returning to what he loves as an active Worldbuilder of Esferos! Fujai will be breathing fresh new life into the West’s roleplay and I am eager to see what he cooks up. Additionally, I’d like to thank Overthinkers for all the work she’s done as Editor of the Western Post during Fujai’s tenure. But she has decided to relinquish the position and so it is with great pleasure that I announce Logical Stimulus as the next Editor of the Western Post! LS has proved themself to be insightful and attentive, and they share a vision of the Western Post I am ecstatic to help realize. The West Pacific’s roleplay and newspaper have been cornerstones of our cultural prowess for the entirety of the 2020s, and rejuvenating them is going to be a key priority.

Obviously my ascension leaves some questions up regarding the positions I had occupied. I will continue to serve as the primary point of FA contact for anyone with concerns or questions about TWP’s FA. There will not be a Minister of Foreign Affairs at this time. I am, however, excited to announce the appointment of two new Guardians! The first is a forever stalwart of the TWP community who needs no further introduction, The Gates of Delirium (aka Westwind)! The second is someone who’s been a member of the West Pacific for almost exactly as long as I’ve been, and has been a consistent and steady influence in the region that entire time. Please also congratulate Hertfordshire and Jammbo on their appointment to Guardian! All West Pacifican World Assembly Nations should endorse both of these nations as soon as possible.

It is due to the efforts of Fujai and OT that this delegacy will be starting off on such a strong foot, with an almost 80% endorsement rate and a complete transition in just over 2 weeks without bringing TWPAF home. They worked to both build up TWP’s WA base and in increasing our endorsement rate to the highest in the GCRs during Fujai’s delegacy, and that’s something I intend to improve upon. We’ve also received a lot of technical support from our friends in Europeia, and this will go a long way to continuing the work put in thus far. Additionally, TWPAF will be pulling out of the Outback in the not-so-far future now that the region has established a thriving and prosperous native community, allowing TWPAF to reestablish itself as a formidable presence on either side of the R/D landscape.

A central facet of recent TWP foreign policy has been the advancement of National Sovereignty in the General Assembly, and I intend only to redouble our efforts in this venue. The West Pacific will engage in every opportunity to promote players internal and external to author resolutions respecting the sovereignty of World Assembly states, sponsor resolutions that do so, and oppose attempts at expanding the influence of pen-and-paper oligarchs over your nation. World Assembly members across the game will always be able to count on the West Pacific as a protector of their national sovereignty.

In many ways, I intend on following the path my predecessors have set forth. The West Pacific will continue to embrace quality over quantity in all facets, we will continue to be aggressively independent in both military and foreign policy, we will continue to ensure foreign regions—partner and opponent alike—will reap the just rewards of their labor, and we will continue to be the snarky bastards you know and may even love.

Tremendous thanks to Vara for the trust placed in me, a relative newcomer to TWP, for the opportunity to work on the Western Post. I am so grateful to be working with an incredibly talented leader whose vision I share almost to the core. In the time we've worked together I've become even more convinced that his leadership will only build on Fujai's excellent job.

I'll be publishing an editorial in the coming days discussing my (brief) history in this game and my commitment to particularly the World Assembly agenda of TWP, since that's the area I've found myself interacting with most over the last couple of months.
