Group of Six meeting (LIX) --- SAINT ELEANOR 2-1 HUElavia
Participants: Gentle Breeze, Reniira Clevinger, Stephen Mitcham ~ Bridget Coombe [C], Cathy Winchester [VC], Steve Pilchard [ballot]
Location: the meeting room at the Paladon Bay Hotel; Avanaroch, TKT
This is the second ever World Cup octofinal we've made It but the first ever knockout game we've won; HUElavia were as challenging as I expected them to be, but many of the lessons we've learned from their game would be worth applying to Tanirinthia. It would be remiss of me not to have my highlighters for this occasion: yellow for retrospectives, blue for points about us, green for points about the opposition, pink for pre-match unknowns.
In my honest opinion, Stephen's gameplan was executed perfectly. We are very much fortunate that Sylvia is still on the team and able to both orchestrate and support comprehensive performances in the midfield. I am surprised it's taken her this long to score her first ever goal at the World Cup (Stephen's fact) - it might be her last given her stated intentions to check out of the team - but that goal was very much a case study in how to work together with your teammates and string together strategic and attacking passes. She was very much the star of today's game, but we cannot ignore how well Ohan and Lawson did to deceive the HUElavian defenders and get us in the right place for some moves. This wasn't Olympia's day, but maybe tomorrow will be!
We did win a couple of free-kicks as well, and made the best of them: I had one of my own swings which came VERY close, and Esther managed to get on the right end of one of them with an hour gone (as she always does). As I recall, not a single one of our corner kicks were cleared away, and many either landed in Thibault Ancel's gloves or close enough to them. Overall, our setpiece play was effective (and everyone else agrees) - this match was very much an exemplar in those regards.
This is not to say that HUElavia mounted an ineffective comeback; indeed, they tried their best to derail our campaign, even while we were 2-0 up in the final stages. They weren't dirty, but we were evenly-matched in midfield most of the time, which for us meant keeping the ball and most of the players between our penalty area and the halfway line while both sides struggled for the advantage. When they did get forward, they were stunningly effective - Emilio Schmidt seemed to be learning all the right lessons from Sylvia, got a goal of his own towards the final stages right before being taken off, and was what we would call "a menace." Narita did have as much of an impact as everyone feared she would, but thankfully for us, neither she nor any of her teammates could quite find that crucial equaliser. And so we are on to yet another last-sixteen match!
----------
Like HUElavia, Tanirinthia are an attack-minded, top-fifteen team with lots of potential. I think it suffices to say that while we might not have a perfect hold on their playstyle, we can assume they will be playing much like HUElavia did - solid in midfield, good and focused in attack, a bit textbook in defence. As we've seen nothing to suggest their midfield is anything as intense as their HUElavian equivalent is, and therefore won't require as much flexibility (i.e. more compartmentation, clearer duties...), we can return to our classic one-to-eleven (with Ohan in place of Northend given his quality).
Both Tanirinthia and HUElavia are good, flexible teams and Gentle Breeze has made it especially clear that anything can happen - both in terms of outcomes and strategy. We could be right at their throats, we could be on the back foot and looking for an extra-time or penalties win, we could implode; we could be in control, or we could make personnel or strategic changes. Never before have we played in such a wide-open, perhaps even thought-provoking game with such great stakes. Let's see if we've screwed the tactics for this one up... Valanora or SRS is going to be tough for either of us!
