We are happy to announce our two newest treaties. The first, The Treaty of Pine with The Kodiak Republic, cements our alignment with our fellow UCRs. TKR has been very kind to us in offering us participation in a variety of their cultural events (including giving us a generous map plot)! While this treaty technically passed a few weeks ago, our FA teams both took well-needed breaks over the holidays. We're honored to have this opportunity to share between our communities.

The second, The Treaty of Augusta Borealis, forms an alliance with The North Pacific. This relationship has been growing for some time, and this culminated in their Regional Assembly passing this treaty yesterday. We're delighted to be their newest ally, and look forward to continuing to build our collaboration in the World Assembly and in promoting mutual security.

Allied Commander Statement on the Outback

Postby Emiline » Sun Apr 13, 2025 8:36 am

A message from The Allied Commander of the Augustin Alliance.
Image

Greetings. I am Emiline, most know me as Emi, and I serve as the Allied Commander of the Augustin Alliance. First, I want to apologize for my seeming absence. Earlier this year, I underwent major surgery and have only recently recovered. That said, I’ve never been known for my good health, and fatigue often catches up with me. As a result, I typically am on rest more than I’d like to admit and rely on my subordinates to manage the day-to-day functions of the Alliance.

However, I’ve become aware that something deeply troubling has taken place. It’s clear to me now that, at some point, we were misled; and I’m still working to understand just how far back that goes and how deeply it runs. I’m not comfortable with the current state of affairs. And while I may not have personally drafted or agreed with the recent statement released under the Alliance’s name, the responsibility for it still falls on me. That isn’t the kind of policy I believe the Alliance should reflect, nor the kind of environment I want to foster.

None of us came into this with malicious intent. No one was trying to play the hero or the villain. Things spiraled, and truthfully, it didn’t have to get this out of hand. Can I point fingers or clear anyone of fault? That’s not really my place. What I can do is acknowledge the role we contributed even if I never intended for it to end up like this. Frankly, the significance of our involvement in The Outback was overstated both in terms of our actual stakes and our intended role there. In hindsight, it may have been misguided to offer our thoughts, opinions, or contributions to others who were operating under a different direction and process entirely. It wasn’t our place, especially considering that I ultimately failed to follow through on the contributions I had originally intended for the operation. Given that, offering such input may have been premature at best or otherwise arrogant.

I’ve spoken with my colleagues on this matter, and we all agree it’s not something that can or should be left unaddressed. We’ve had friendships with everyone involved, and there was never any intention to betray that trust. From our perspective, we had every reason to support our allies on all sides, and that’s what we wanted to do. I think somewhere along the way, that intent got lost for some of our teams, and that’s something I deeply regret.

It’s important that we confront it directly and work toward a clear understanding. I want to set things right. I say this sincerely. I’m not here to play political games. I’m not against setting aside a great deal of personal pride to admit how much things got out of hand on my end. I trusted the wrong people. I was misled. And I’m willing to take full ownership of that. I still believe it’s never too late to do the right thing. And so, I intend to acknowledge these mistakes and extend my apologies to those affected.

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge my failure in the communication breakdown that sparked this entire situation. From the very beginning, there wasn’t a clear line of communication between the parties, and it quickly became unclear who we even needed to be speaking with. I think we acted on a mix of public speculation and fragmented back-and-forth without fully understanding where everyone stood. I’ve always believed in being open and honest, it's how I prefer to operate, and somewhere along the way, we lost that transparency. That shift led to a serious misunderstanding, one that only deepened as we all quietly held onto our confusion and frustrations instead of confronting them directly.

In hindsight, a lot of things were exaggerated or left out entirely to us. It also seems clear now that a fair bit of personal sentiment and speculation was presented to us as if it came directly from regional officers, as if it were official direction or advice, when it should never have been taken that way. That distinction matters, and I regret not questioning it more at the time. Without naming this person due to their clear wishes that I do not, I know I was quick to latch on to what I was told about someone I care deeply about. Because of that connection, I didn’t scrutinize the information as carefully as I should have; whether those concerns truly reflected their own feelings or were someone else’s words projected onto them.

Secondly, I want to acknowledge that too much happened too quickly, without the time or space to process things properly or respond with the care the situation deserved. I’ve never been someone who likes to operate on an elevated timeline; I prefer to take in as much information as possible before making a decision. I was aware that some around me intended to move fast, and while I made it clear I disagreed, I failed to be a strong enough voice to slow things down. That’s on me, and I recognize it made us come across as unprepared and even foolish at times.

I had asked my people to slow down, especially because I was still trying to get a full grasp of the situation in the limited time I had. But during the hours I stepped away to rest, I didn’t make sure that guidance was followed through. That’s something I should have done. Leadership doesn’t pause just because I needed a break, and I take responsibility for not ensuring our approach stayed steady and measured in my absence.

Third, I think the statement we released didn’t truly reflect how we felt. It came out too fast, too reactive, and leaned too heavily on some of the more troubling voices in the room, voices that didn’t do us any favors. It wasn’t the kind of message I wanted to send, and I’ve held from the start that the best thing we could’ve done was to simply apologize. But again, whatever my intentions were, the statement still made its way out and I allowed that to happen. That’s on me. We got so caught up in trying to stay ahead of rumors, trying to push back on narratives we felt were misleading, that we lost sight of the actual goal. All we ever wanted was to clear up a misunderstanding, to offer clarity where there was confusion. But in the end, that wasn’t achieved, and I take responsibility for that.

That being said, I want to apologize to The Outback.

When we first got involved, it was, like I said earlier, just a ring of friends. We had no reason to meddle, and it was never our intention or goal to do so. But I think we got caught up in trusting everyone else so much that we forgot something important: we wanted to build trust in The Outback as well. There are people I care about deeply in The Outback, and I let my personal sentiments toward some of them cloud the bigger picture, that it wasn’t just about individuals, but the region as a whole.

This wasn’t our best showing, and we should have communicated with you better. Our decision to consider pulling pilers out wasn’t made out of animosity. It came from the impression that things had stalled out, and yes, we did intend to pull pilers, but I had hoped to do so with the condition that we continue working together in other areas, which is more of our specialty. But again, the extent of our personal involvement did not meet full fruition and we were too eager to offer our voice instead of listening.

At one point, we were asked whether we’d be willing to stay and support The Outback in the case of an administration change. That option was presented to us as internal. I even warned some of our fellow regions that we needed to be careful and we didn’t want to play kingmaker. But the truth is, I, and I think several others, operated under a false narrative about The Outback’s internal dynamics. Both by overstating some things and omitting others. And because of that, I backed the wrong opinion about the administration.

I would also like to offer an apology to The North Pacific.

They are our friends, and I have every reason to trust them. Unfortunately, they were kept out of our communication lines, and that wasn’t right. It wasn’t our best foot forward, and I regret that we failed to keep them in the loop the way we should have. A joint statement would have been the better course of action; especially since, as I understood it, we were aligned in wanting to issue an apology. I’m not sure where that understanding got lost, but it shouldn’t have. The Alliance is as committed to its friends as ever, and we want to make that clear; not just in words, but in how we act going forward. I ask you to continue to give me that chance.

This was a multi-pronged failure, and I’m deeply sorry that it happened. We found ourselves caught in the middle of our allies, trying to honor our commitments to all sides, we ended up backing the wrong plays and neglecting others. It became a tangled knot we tried to unravel, but in doing so, we only pulled it tighter in some places. As the Allied Commander, I offer these words on behalf of my Alliance and accept the consequences of our actions. I do not operate in the shadows, I am a builder, not a destroyer, and I want to continue leading with that principle. Many people were rightfully taken aback by how things played out, and I want to make clear: this is not the kind of precedent I ever intended to set.

I want to give Emiline's post a bit more due attention when I have a moment because it is longer and warrants a careful reading, but in the meantime I just have to point out that you have maintained an extremely hostile and frankly absurd view of the situation,

TNP caved to pressure, I'm really not totally sure why, gosh. I have so many friends I love there :/

You know, one almost wonders, do defenders ever get tired of extortion and exploitation, or is it their natural state of being as they become armchairs and stop sympathizing with humanity?
    Merely a philosophical question.

One really has to wonder how sincere anything you have to say here is. This was all from last night.

    Merely a philosophical question.

One really has to wonder how sincere anything you have to say here is. This was all from last night.

My opinions are my own. I'm not interested in relitigating this with you and neither is the Augustin Alliance.

You're the Diplomatic Officer still, no? What precisely is this statement meant to accomplish then, if not re-opening the issue for discussion? I have a theory, but I'd love to hear your answer. It talks about the region being misled - what does the AA plan to do about the (unnamed) people who misled it?

Is the position of the diplomatic office that the AA was extorted? That TNP caved to pressure in apologizing? Does this mean Emi only issued this statement because she is caving to pressure now?
