MILITARY HISTORY OF AUPRUSSIA INTERREGNE BASONY 1

Accounts by deu Lithos written in 195 ASE
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Remaiy

The Bason King (16 ASE)
In the northeast of modern-day Auprussia King Erdric D'Arainville sat on his throne paranoid and stressed. The Kingdom of Basony is no stranger to having enemies on her border but this time it may have been too much. The Bervic tribes to the northeast of the kingdom have been raiding the lands around Taulaix and are most likely aiming for the city next. To the south the Salva tribes had risen up against King Erdric due to his slow reaction to the most concerning threat that the kingdom faces. To the southeast the Morgavinds had been growing in power for decades. Now to many Bason kings it did not matter that much, the Morgavinds were not interested in the north as much as they were interested in the modern-day Auprussian heartland in Alba and Croux. Things changed when new Morgavind King Berseg Laithpulse had started to raid the southern Basonic border which incited the Salva.

Erdric looked to his commanders and assigned them to each campaign according to where they were from. Erdric hoped that it would incentivize the commanders to fight harder, aim for the total defeat of the enemy, and maybe gain land in the process. Erdric assigned Marquis Eschellin to the Bervic campaign. Marquis was a zealous man who had been a major part of why Basony had interest in Bervica in the first place. Marquis wanted to spread the faith of The King of Light, a religion shared by the Kingdom of Piendoux and the Duchy of Chagrix. The Bervic tribes believed in a couple of different faiths. The most prominent one was Vica or the modern-day Order of The Grand Mother. With these religious differences it was almost inevitable that the two entities would clash.

Erdric then assigned command of the Salva campaign to Choetrie La Verin, a rugged and rough frontiersmen who was familiar with the rural areas around the Salva tribes and has experience communicating with the Salva. Choetrie was eager to get back to his family after being in the stuffy courts of Illois for 3 years. Not only that but he had convinced the king the Salva could be talked into swearing fealty to Erdric if they showed slightly more concern about the Morgavinds, an enemy that even Erdric was concerned about.

Erdric finally gave command of the Morgavind campaign to Charles De Moriquet. A commander who has been warning Erdric of the threat posed by not only the Morgavinds but their neighbors in the Duchy of Chagrix and Kingdom of Piendoux. De Moriquet was always one to take advantage of an opportunity for fame and glory but it was deeper than that to Charles. In his mind he wanted to be king of Basony one day and to do that he needed to show he was not an incompetent leader which is why he is one of the first people to have the king's ear. Charles also traveled vast lands and had observed many peoples and cultures which is why he was nicknamed "Le Voiagei" or "The Voyager".

After assigning commands to each front King Erdric had told them one thing: "Failure is not an option, our position as a kingdom depends on us being able to handle these incidents". All 3 commanders nodded and left for their command. King Erdric's advisor Leon had concerns: "My Liege, I respect your decisions as you are as wise as an owl and as magnificent as the night sky...but I am concerned about Charles and Choetrie...". Usually King Erdric would strike this thought down, but he had his own suspicions especially around Charles so he had let the conversation go. "Charles seems a bit too ambitious for a man as learned and as wealthy as he, and Choetrie has experience with the-" Erdric interrupted: "Choetrie is not my main concern for now. Charles as you noted is very ambitious and already very wealthy. I do not think he has our best interests in mind". Leon was surprised the king entertained his concerns and had concluded that Charles must be the bigger threat to the king than even the armies at their borders.

Starting the Bervica Campaign (16 ASE)
Marquis' army had started at Traspienne and was comprised of 8000 men. 3000 Basonic Swordsmen, 2000 Archers, 1000 Spearmen, and 2000 Light Lancer cavalry. The reason for such a large army being allocated was clear, it was supposed to be a defensive campaign to push the Bervic raiders and small armies out of Basonia. When this was accomplished half the army would be re-allocated to assist De Moriquet and La Verin. Marquis had a different idea however. He viewed the campaign against the Bervics as a holy war and was dedicated to crushing the Bervic tribes outright.

Marquis started by sending 1000 men contingents all across the Northeastern Basonic border and region to sweep the raiders, when the Bervic raiders saw the Basonic contingents they retreated to their side of the border. One must note that the Northeast of Auprussia is a peninsula so the Bervic raiders had to funnel into Bervica to get out of Basonia. Once Marquis realized this he sent his men into action and attempted to obliterate the raiders. Unfortunately Marquis' army could only kill or capture 200-300 men as the Bervics out-maneuvered the Basonic contingents and got to the border.

Marquis could not strike at Bervica yet, he had already sent word to the King's court that the raider problem was slightly worse than what it really was and had to delay as if to act like the raiders were putting up a resistance. The King's scouts in the area silently looked on and did not relay what Marquis was doing...almost as if they had agreed with Marquis that Bervica had to be invaded.

The Frontier of Salva (16 ASE)
Meanwhile Choetrie had marched his smaller contingent of 3000 men just outside of the Salvan forests. He wanted to prepare a delegation and escort to approach the Salvans and assure them they will be protected from the Morgavinds. To do this he had established a fort and constructed wooden walls to make sure that they were to be protected in case the Salvans wanted to flank the delegation, it would also help with if the Salvans refused to cooperate and force had to be applied. Choetrie gathered 100 of his most trusted men and made way to the Salvan villages. Leaving the rest at the fort ready to support him.

Choetrie approached the leader of the Salvans respectfully and in a Salvan way. The Salvan leader, Arou welcomed Choetrie warmly and they very quickly came to an agreement. Choetrie was very surprised by this asking: "Rebellion is very serious, why have you put down your arms so eagerly". The Salvan leader merely said: "Rather kill a Morgavind than a friend". This exchange was still offputting to the Basonic army but Choetrie took Ariou's fighting men to the fort and prepared to march eastward to assist Charles.

Clear Minded Ambition (16 ASE)
Charles De Moriquet had starting with 3000 men but through his wealth and connections raised another 3000. Leaving his army with 6000 men to combat the Morgavind forces. A scout loyal to Charles had also told him about the situation near Bervica. De Moriquet was enraged quoted as exclaiming: "Once we are done here I will rend Marquis myself!". The angered De Moriquet had taken a methodical approach to the Morgavind campaing. He had baited small contingents into fighting his superior forces and obliterated them. Now from accross the field near the coast he saw the Morgavind army line up preparing for battle.

Battle of The Basonic Coast (17 ASE)
De Moriquet's army was much more mobile than a normal Basonian army, he had the standard 3000 Basonic Swordsmen but only had 500 archers. De Moriquet wanted both Light and Heavy Lancers to combat the Morgavinds' advantages as an army. 1000 Light Lancers and 1500 Heavy Lancers respectively. The opposing Morgavind army was led by one of the 6 Morgavind princes, Scirmig Caulon and his army comprised of 2000 Horse Archers, 2000 Light Lancers, and 4000 Spearmen

De Moriquet had issued the order to line up but his plan was not to fight the Morgavind army in open combat it was to bait the Morgavinds into committing their forces nearest to the coast which was on De Moriquet's right. So he lined up his most vulnerable troops, the 500 Archers and a smaller contingent of Light Lancers (numbers range from 100-200 men) on the right with a purposefully placed gap between them and the center, where he put most of his Swordsmen put the Heavy Lancers in reserve. In the left he purposefully made it look like it was a stronger flank by putting the rest of the Swordsmen, Heavy Lancers, and Light Lancers.

Scirmig had put his Horse Archers front and center while he pulled 1000 Light Lancers and 2000 Spearmen to his left near the coast. The rest were prepared to take on the seemingly strong Basonic left with the rest of his Lancers and Spearmen.

Scirmig ordered the left to crash into the Basonic right which fell right into Charles' trap. Charles quickly ordered the men to rotate and flank the incoming Morgavind force and they successfully trapped it near the coast. Scirmig seeing this decided to pull his forces from his right and ordered to flank and charge upon the Basons taking advantage of the real gap that Charles created. Reacting quickly Charles enforced his center with the forces from his own left and stabilized the lines for a small amount of time.

Then the Horse Archers started to wear down the Basonic infantry and they were pushed back slowly but surely. De Moriquet knew he couldn't hold on much longer and decided to organize a retreat and while Scirmig wanted to chase after the retreating forces he knew that he could potentially expose himself if De Moriquet was feigning a retreat so he decided to stay.

Casualties from the battle seem to indicate a Morgavind loss even if De Moriquet was forced to retreat back. The Basonic army had lost 1400 men but the Morgavind army lost 2100 men, mostly from the first charge being trapped on the coast. For Scirmig it was a "shameful victory" as he had to also retreat back to the raider camps for supplies and to reorganize his men.

De Moriquet on the other hand sent the scout that told him of Marquis' actions to the king, attempting to expose Marquis' irresponsible actions.

WORLD CUP 96

The qualification for the World Cup has entered the second phase of the game. Our football team is still holding up well despite all the troubles that befell us.
The first match we played was against the Al-Tamazgh team. Al-Tamazgha came to visit us and it was obvious that this match would not end well for them. Our team literally flexed its muscles on the opponent.
In the goliath that was, we won 7-2!
The highest victory for Raspotochje in history!

Already in the next match, we sobers up and lands on hard ground. Away match against Commonwealth of Baker Park, although we played well, we lost 2-1! We gave them the leading position in the group at that moment.
However, when we play in front of our fans, our team shows that motivation to play more better. The Union of Ventura team arrived as our guests. Only luck and our mistakes saved them from 5 or 6 goals in their net. Raspotochje celebrated another 3 points with a score of 3-1!

Sylestone is one of the important sports nations in the multiverse. That nation had a lot of success in sports, especially in handball. However, in football they are within reach. Although they are ranked better than our team, we hoped to surprise them at their stadium. However, there were no surprises. Sylestone was far better and result wa high 3-1 for them!

And then came the match against Zenic! All kinds of things happened there in that match. The most affected situation was the injury of our central midfielder, one of the backbone of this team, Mladen Robulović. We were leading 1-0 and then came the injury of Mladen Robulović and then the red card of Pavao Krnotić! Zenic managed to equalize with the one player more since 47th minute.
We went to Jeruselem without two important players in the hope that we could do something. In a situation like this, a point is also very important, as big as a house. We played bravely and courageously, but we were unable to score the equalizing goal. Jeruselem won 1-0!
after a good start, now our situation is very complicated. The imperative of victory is on our backs. There is a lot of pressure on the players, and we hope that they will be able to cope with that pressure.

BBC OFFICIAL REPORT: Trent Vobama Arrested After Inciting Riot!

By Football Correspondent Gary Obamaniker

Mobamale, Alobama - Long-serving cricket captain, tough-tackling centre-back, respected PE teacher, eloquent author - and convicted felon? These are the many terms used to describe the famous (or perhaps infamous) Trent Vobama, who recently had the tour for his autobiography Becoming Trent Vobama derailed when he got arrested for his involvement in a riot at a Baracks & Knobble bookstore in Mobamale.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene at 2.33pm yesterday, Trent Vobama arrived at the bookstore as part of his scheduled farewell + book launch + book signing + meet + greet tour. However, he seemed slightly agitated at the book signing, with accounts reporting that he snapped pens in half, flipped tables, shredded copies of his book with his bare hands and yelled at customers to "get out of his sight". Rumours of his diagnosis of chronic homesickness were floating before yesterday, after similar expressions of annoyance in other segments of the farewell + book launch + book signing + meet + greet tour.

While the ripping of books stirred some mild annoyance in some of the patrons as they didn't feel like going back in queue to buy another one, people remained surprisngly calm during the ordeal. "It was pretty cool, actually." remarked Barry L. Fitzbama, a foot reflexologist. "Very rarely do you get to see true athletes do normal stuff like destroying a bookstore. I don't think I could even get that heavy table to flip over. It's like watching a beautiful car crash in slow motion. Nothing you can do about it, so you can only stop to admire it."

However, the tranquility amongst the spectators didn't last long. The breaking point was when Trent Vobama began throwing random items from his bag into the crowd. Even though they were mostly just ballpoint pens, crumpled scrap paper and empty Sozha Aoda cans, they had been touched by the one and only Trent Vobama and everyone scrambled to get a hand on them. The ensuing brawl between bookstore patrons to obtain just about anything Vobama-owned spilled out of the Baracks & Knobble and caused hundreds of people in the surrounding area to join the fight. Numerous objects were torched, hurled and smashed over someone's head that day.

"In Alobama, things are different." smirked local hick Tracy Poppadomaba, sporting a black eye and a prosthetic limb. "Fights? They're rare. We can't even enjoy the privilege of getting into a scuffle with someone or teaching them a painful lesson or even just expressing ourselves because of the damn police crawlinf around and preaching about their law and order crap. But once a fight gets big, it's like a runaway train. You can't stop it. That's why those security guards at the bookstore and mall didn't try to stop it - they joined in! No point trying to do your job to no avail, you must seize the day and go beat someone up while you have the chance. And that's exactly what I did! Boy, Dan from next door sure as hell won't be stealing my lawn chairs ever again!"

Once the dust settled, military police swooped into the area and attempted to arrest as many people as possible for their involvement in the riot. While most people just went home and couldn't be caught, a passed-out Trent Vobama was handcuffed and taken into custody. If found guilty of inciting a riot, he could face life in prison with hard labour. Time can only tell if his celebrity status will help him out, or if he will be made an example.

BBC OFFICIAL PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT: Choking Hazards Rampant

By Safety Correspondent Dicky Obamablick

As many of you may have heard by now, the West Barack and East Obama National Football Team are the latest victims in a string of choking incidents. Blowing a 2-0 lead in the last ten minutes of a game against a team ranked in the triple digits after conceding just once in the last six games is a particularly nasty case, and you can prevent similar chokes by remaining vigilant.

Fellow Obamen, please watch what you eat for the next few months. Common items found in food that could contribute to choking include: fish bones, fish sticks, hot dogs, cough drops, Legoes, bottle caps, jet engines, statuettes of our Glorious President Barack Obama and cowboy boot spurs. If you find any of these potentially choking you, report your supplier to the nearest government official. They can handle it.

Hind Tribune
Silent Voices

Every old building in the city has its own story to say, every tree and every park would also have a long story that's been tied to them until they stop existing. Taking the case of the city of Hind or probably the New Hind City as it's called now, it's got an ancient history to tell. One of the most popular attractions in the city would be the hundred acres big "Pembroke Park". The Pembroke Park would be the largest green area after the Hind Valley National Park in the city.

The Pembroke Park is a magnet for people of all ages. Imagine acres of grass, trees, and sparkling lakes, all waiting for you to explore. The Park had more lakes in it that what you see now and more area too, but they were either used up for construction of some other structures. The lakes at Pembroke Park are like little patches of magic. They're so peaceful, perfect for chilling out with friends or enjoying a quiet moment by yourself. You can even rent paddle boats and cruise around, feeling like you're in your own adventure story. Not all lakes offer the paddle boats access. The Larger Lakes like the Pravahani Lake, Kottakakom Lake, Pembroke's Lake are the only one's that have paddle boating in their premises.
Image
But there's way more to do than just sit around and enjoy the view. You can find a lot of people playing games on the grass, go for a jog or bike ride on the trails, or just wander around and see what you discover. It's like a big playground for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. You even find long lost structures in the park which may have a history to speak of. Pembroke Park also hosts various events like Mini Concerts, Dances etc in their bandstands and small auditoriums which are scattered across the huge park.
Image

Pembroke Park derives its name from Lord Pembroke, a prominent general in the emperor's army during a significant period in history. Renowned for his contributions to the community, Lord Pembroke played a pivotal role in the establishment and maintenance of the park. It was under Lord Pembroke's stewardship that the park's defining features, including its lakes and fountains, were meticulously crafted. His vision for providing a serene retreat for the people of Hind led to the creation of Pembroke Park as we know it today.

Though centuries have passed since Lord Pembroke's time, his name remains synonymous with the park's enduring legacy. His dedication to enhancing the community's quality of life through the creation of this green space continues to resonate with visitors and residents alike. As patrons of Pembroke Park enjoy its tranquil surroundings and lush landscapes, they are reminded of Lord Pembroke's lasting impact and the profound significance of his contributions to the city of Hind.

The Pembroke park can be accessed through six different gates. The Southern Gate is located near the Jnanabharati Campus, the South East Gate at the west end of Hind Sport City Project, there's two gates in the West near Mahalakshmipuram (a suburb in Satyanarayana Nagar) and opposite the Swatantra Nagar metro station. The Main Gate is located at the Parade Gate which also serves as the conjunction of the Parade Street and Cantonment Road. There's the North Gate near Pembroke's Ave (A Cross Road of Cantonment Road) and the North Eastern Gate at the corner of the Kottakakom Lake. These gates also exist as the official borders of the large park.

PRESS RELEASE
DFA Makes Coaching Changes For Men's National Team

SCOTT CITY — Thursday, September 6, 2063 — The Darmeni Football Association (DFA) has regrettably terminated the contract of men's national team manager Dennis Foss following the team's 5-1 loss to Tumbra in Couno. Grahame Vangson, the team's assistant manager will be elevated to the position of manager on an interim basis until the end of World Cup 96 qualification.

While the path to World Cup qualification was always going to be a tough one for Darmen, who have not reached the finals since World Cup 84, the Executive Committee took particular displeasure in the team's recent blowout losses to Saint Eleanor and Tumbra. Such major defeats are unacceptable considering the talent available for selection to the national team. While the DFA thanks Mr. Foss for his dedication and loyalty to the management of the men's national team, it has become clear that a time for a change is possible.

While the DFA looks forward to working with Grahame Vangson over the remainder of the qualification period, it should be noted that the DFA has no intention of extending Mr. Vangson's tenure as manager of the men's national team past the agreed upon interim period, as it did with Mr. Foss. Instead, it is the intention of the DFA to look for a permanent manager of the men's national team from outside the current coaching structures of the DFA's various national teams. While the search for such a manager will certainly cover the managers of Darmen's domestic football system, the DFA is prepared to potentially hire the first foreign manager of the men's national team in the modern era.

All potential candidates for the position of manager of the Darmen men's national football team should contact the DFA via telegram, providing the DFA with the following pertinent information:
  • A listing of all previous relevant experience in football management,
  • a list of any personnel the candidate wishes to include in their coaching staff,
  • a brief explanation of their preferred formation and playing tactics,
  • and a brief explanation of their personality.
The DFA extends its best wishes to Mr. Vangson and the Darmeni men's national team in their remaining qualification matches. The DFA also extends its best wishes to Mr. Foss in his future endeavors.

The Darmeni Football Association is the national governing body for association football in Darmen. Founded in 2036, the DFA organizes the national football teams for men, women and youth; as well as the National Cup competition for club teams. It is the DFA's responsibility to extend sanctioning to all other footballing bodies within Darmen and to represent Darmen before the World Cup Committee and the Confederación Rushmori de Fútbol. The DFA is currently led by its president, Randall Elmwood.

THE REBUILD
V: Fishing/Aquaculture - A Cautious Opportunity

A casual viewer of the maritime areas around Myana Island might be wondering why the eastern half of the Island matters when the majority of the fishing is done off the coast of Myana itself or the waters between the two island of Urrhed and Myana. Those people, unfortunately, simply don’t understand how maritime ecosystems work. Though it is true that each individual body of water has its own characteristics depending on the temperature, the wind, and the lands that they border, it’s a lot more freeform than the boundaries on land – and there is no denying the fact that there is truly just one ocean.

For whatever reason, the corrupting influences of the Yesopalithan Abyss prioritized spreading across land over the water, taking over the eastern half of Myana Island before trying to spread out to the oceans around it. This meant that by the time that the Chromatik/Yesopalithan forces set up the barrier, the influence hadn’t made it too far away from the coast, making it actually possible to contain even the water instead of just the land. The barriers held for the whole year, and when the decision was made to drop the barrier, the unified forces actually decided to keep the marine barriers as they were afraid that contaminated water flowing back to the ocean would be detrimental to the overall ecosystem of the island.

As the painstaking process of purifying the lands of the eastern half of Myana Island began, the Chromatik government was given the difficult choice of rehabilitating the affected waters or just destroying it altogether. With the reconstruction process deciding to prioritize other areas, the decision was made to just destroy the corrupted marine ecosystem. All the affected water and marine life off the coast was utterly annihilated using evaporation technology, the chemicals resulting from the fumes being safely disposed as well. Some of the fish were successfully caught to be consecrated, but many others had already been killed by the corruption or were too far gone to be reinstated back to their original shape. It wasn’t an easy decision, but given the magnitude of the resources needed in other areas, it was the right thing to do.

So, nine months after the invasion was repelled, the unified forces dropped the barriers holding back the waters from the coast; it took no time at all for the waters to fill back in, starting the process of nature taking back what it had lost. Scientists will be monitoring the health of the coasts with vaunted interest to see if nature can run its course or if it will need assistance from the Chromatik government.

What does this mean for fishing/aquaculture in general? Well, the harvesting of the various fish, crustaceans, and other marine wildlife that had lived near the coast will now be able to commence – which will help the local businesses as well as those that had been importing from the communities. By the time that the infrastructure returns to allow for cities and other towns to actually exist on the affected half of the island, the wildlife may have recovered to the point to sustain a portion of the new economy.

On the other hand, this also brings forth many opportunities for communities and industries to set up for the future in a better way going forward. By promoting sustainable fishing/gathering, designating areas that will be used entirely as kelp farms, and clearly marking the reefs/other areas that are to be used for scientific research purposes only, the island can set itself up for the future in this regard.

Multiple smaller ventures from the city of Myana have committed to the establishment of fishing ventures in the eastern half as the island continues to repopulate, eager to get out of the shadow of their larger counterparts amidst the hope of a better future. It may be a bit of a gamble, but the potential payout is big enough to warrant this kind of a push.

Due to the quick thinking of the Yesopalithan allies and the Chromatik government, this is the one area where Chromatika didn’t suffer as devastating of a loss as in other areas. Regardless, it’s still another thing that requires constant care and attention, and an area that could end up being a boon going forward, if cultivated correctly. It’s this determination that should consistently see the Chromatik government continue to give it the attention that it is due – or the opportunity could see itself disappear into the ether, leaving everyone wondering just what could’ve been. Hopefully, the powers that be will understand the importance and not leave it out to dry.

[OOC: CW/profanity]

An observer taking stock of the first half of qualifying in Group 18 in World Cup 96 qualifying would likely have a headache.

With Ko-oren as the eighth ranked team in the football-playing multiverse as the presumptive favourites to clinch an automatic bid to the proper, the real question seemed to be which of the remaining sides would battle for the group's two spots in the playoffs. You had No. 44 Ochre Islands[b] and No. 61 [b]Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove, whom this publication shall refer to as the Stove People because their name is too fucking long and it's a pain in the arse to copy and paste, let alone type out as favourites by rank.

Lurking close behind are 87th ranked Carpathia and Ruthenia, whom this publication felt had a shot at a playoff bid if enough bounces went their way. Sarzonia at No. 112 felt like a team that needed to maximise points from the lower ranked Rea San Vegas and No. 295 Labalia. With essentially a "B" side having seen two standings points slip through their fingers against Rea San Vegas, it looked like a lost qualifying campaign for the Stars.

That's why they say they don't play 'em on paper. After only earning four points from a possible six against the minnows of the group, the Stars pulled off a shock result, dealing Ko-oren a 1-0 defeat and providing the first crack in the armour of post-football. That Earth-shattering upset suddenly made a lot of pundits forget about the criticism they levied upon the Stars and manager Caleb Rush. All of a sudden, he and the team were the toasts of the nation, having etched a signature victory just four matchdays into qualifying.

Where the team's away draw against Rea San Vegas felt like a stinging defeat, the away draw against Carpathia and Ruthenia felt more like a victory. They'd gone to a hostile ground and stole a valuable point out of nowhere. They would get another real win with another Top 50 upset, defeating Ochre Islands 4-2 to put the Stars well within sight of a playoff berth.

Rush was wise to remind his team not to rest on their laurels as they lost a hot, sweaty 2-0 contest against the Stove People in a desert on a fucking baseball field. Rush received criticism from media for not objecting to the dangerous conditions in Stoveland (literally felt like a Goddamn oven), but apparently Incorporated Football Federation chairman Zack Wilson lodging a protest after the fact caused a rift between him and his father Brian Wilson, as in the Hall of Fame World Cup champion goalscorer. That sounds like a job for family therapy to us.

So what do we make of this team, thought of by some as a potential dark horse even though they had no star power (no pun intended) when qualifying began? Well, a lot remains to be seen. Sarzonia will need to get the full six points from the two remaining matches against Labalia and Rea San Vegas. The first match is supposed to be an away fixture, but with the entire country save for the football team being reduced to ruins, it may be a distraction to play in a wrecked stadium with none but the support personnel to cheer on the Labalians.

They will get a home match against Rea San Vegas, who earned just their second victory of qualifying against Labalia (R.I.P.). They sit at 2-1-3 with seven points heading into the second half of qualifying, but could easily squeeze themselves into a more favourable position if Sarzonia take them lightly. We sure hope Rush has his "trap match" speech ready because he's gonna need it with a visit to Ko-oren coming up after the bye. A perilous stretch of matches follows that, so the road stick looks difficult.

*******************************************************************

Away matches haven't been particularly kind to Sarzonia, as they only notched two points from three matches away from the friendly confines of Dave Wilson Stadium in Woodstock.

On paper, a visit to the former nation of No. 295 Labalia looked like it had potential to provide a chance for a cheap three points for the Group 18 table. However, with a pitch that was only just cleared of rubble following its self-inflicted destruction, it very easily could've tripped up a team that was also a triple-digit ranked side.

However, Sarzonia did just enough offensively as it got two goals in the final 10 minutes and prevailed 2-1. Combined with the Stove People shocking Ko-oren 2-1 at home, and Ochre Islands holding Carpathia and Ruthenia to a 3-3 draw, and Matchday 8 sees Sarzonia atop the table with a 4-2-1 record and 14 points, one point clear of the Dragonflies' 4-1-2 mark with 13 points.

Rush said he warned his team against getting "too big for our britches."

"We've won four matches from seven," he said. "There are still five matches to go and we still have away matches against the highest ranked teams in the group. Not only that, but we won't be able to sneak up on them after the first half of qualifying."

Spencer Wilson got the second half rally started when he skied for a header on a cross from midfielder Harley Masterson past the Labalian goalkeeper in the 82nd minute. It caused barely a ripple in the folding chairs occupied by the Labalian team's support personnel, but the same could be said of the sharp free kick the Labalian playmaking midfielder scored on in the 19th minute against John Wells. Wilson would provide the assist on the winner seven minutes on with a fake that forced the keeper to commit before Wilson cheekily slid the ball to substitute forward Holly Chambers. She made her bis count, and suddenly, she'd helped the Stars snatch victory from the jaws of a most distressing defeat.

Just a half hour after the Labalia result went full-time, the home match against Rea San Vegas was sold out. Sarzonia supporters always appreciate winners, and thus far, this dark horse side have measured up.

ZLATNI LAVOVI PROVE TO BE ZWANGZUG'S KRYPTONITE - FAILURE TO MAINTAIN SAFE GROUP LEAD DUE TO LATE MINUTE DEFEAT TO SRS

It is not many times that a team gets to defeat a squad that at least on paper seems to be superior. Statistically speaking that happens once every blue moon and every time it happens, it is an epic encounter of minnows outdoing themselves. Do it once, it's a great victory, do it twice and you are starting to turn heads into your direction. That is exactly what Josifovo's very own Zlatni Lavovi managed to do against Zwangzug. In an epic back-and-forth, which saw Petko Karandzhulov and Milorad Kuzmanović stand out in the back, win most of their aerial duels against the Zwangzugian offence and showcasing their strength, a trait Josifski players have come to be known for. Trajkovski stood out with a handy brace of headers himself, while Bajrami would seal the deal with a rocket in the 78th minute to escape from hell. 2-3 and 5 points ahead of the Zwangzugians, this was becoming a dream scenario.

While the first matchday against the Squornshellan team was easier than expected, the return game proved to be the exact opposite. Dudu Madeiros' side proved to be a tough challenger and with home advantadge on their side managed to get a triumphant victory, despite the Zlatni Lavovi's greatest efforts and matching goals each time. Tiiu Aaltonen proved to be the woman for the occassion, as she would score a complete hat-trick. Once with her head, once with right foot and finishing the business with her left foot. Trajkovski and Bajramović would score for Josifovo, however this would not be enough and now the race to the top of the group is starting to become crazier than ever before.

Despite this, the team's morale is still high and the focus is on the next games. Pece Trajkovski himself stating. "We are still playing as a unit and this team we played against are not only regional champions but a champion of all champions. To be giving them a run for their money across two games is testament for our growth as a team. Our mind is now set for the games against the Celestial Emapier and Semarland. We have to maintain our focus and stick to the coaches' tactics."

Josifovo is leading the pack in group 4, with 18 points and is being closely followed by the top 2 pots Zwangzug, with 16 and the surging Squornshellan Remnant States who are currently on 13. With Zwangzug breathing heavily on Josifovo's neck, the Zlatni Lavovi will need to be on their toes for all the remaining matches and not slip up against any opposition. With the way the Josifski are playing however, there is an air of confidence for the games ahead and a sigh of relief, seeing the power of their opponents.

WORLD CUP 94 QUALIFIERS NIGHTMARE REPEATS ITSELF AS SQUADRA SEES ITSELF DRAWING TWICE IN A ROW

Rarely has la squadra had poor offensive output, much less so during the Gaetan tenure, having scored in each game of the qualifiers so far, a testament to his offensive brilliance. Defensive gaps were always covered by the high-scoring strategies laid out by coaches from Toset's era all the way to today. The games against The 14 Stars and Wight have laid out big issues when it comes to the team's performances at home. A general inconsistency that has been prevalent even in the best of the country's runs. Nobody knows where this has come from, as home support in Juvencus is known to be lively and loud, exactly traits that would pump up any professional footballer. However, those two games have been the ones where the defensive gaps shone brightest.

Truly, a great run of games by the frontlines was enough to secure points at least. With Ceferino Audiol and Julio Campana scoring one each against The 14 Stars who saw themselves 0-2 by half-time. While a generational duo of wingers in Gasol and Vives saw themselves serving a goal to each other against a dynamic Wight side, which has been out of the form it has come to be known for. Another standout was Chimo Quaranta, vital in the team's movement throught both games and a general asset for Gael Gaetan's team whenever needed.

Not sticking to any excuses, Gael Gaetan refused to comment over the team's slip ups instead opting to mention the games against Brookstation and Srendjaci ahead specifically stating: "We are set on our next opponents in order to regain whatever ground was lost during this break. It is not the end of the world and we will come back stronger, thank you."

Juvencus is barely clinging on to second place as things stand, with 12 points, while The 14 Stars and Srednjaci are right behind. Holding on to a playoff spot is the only hope that there is left and with it currently in danger, a more usual lineup will be fielded against Brookstation to ease things out.

Starting XI:
GK:Juan Carlos Ungaro
CB:Carlo Callejon
CB:Pau Puig
CB:Carlos Coste
CDM:Sara Ponce
CDM:Raul Viejo
RM:Simon Oliveira
LM:Chimo Quaranta
RF:Gilberto Soares
LF:Edu Coste
CF:Ceferino Audiol

PAPAL ELECTION SEES NO POPE AS BLACK SMOKE IS LET OUT

Pope Demetrius X's death has seen the College of Cardinals frantically looking to vote for a new Pope. Thus far the votes have been incomplete, as black smoke was let out of the Cappella Suprema. The government of OCEPS, with many members in the College of Cardinals have advised everyone to "remain patient" as this is a slow process and the competition is high between the cardinals.

With no looming crisis in the horizon, the time feels right for the change in rulership, no matter how long it may take. However, as is the nature of the church, it could see itself in the spotlight if there is no new Pope soon. The next conclave will take place in the following days, as the College of Cardinals are maintaing a healthy discussion within the Cappella Suprema.

What is the more impressive feat, winning the World Cup or winning the Champions League? Vanorians are in a rare set of nations that are able to be able to weigh the merits and measures of both have multiple wins of both competitions, a feat that only a handful of other nations are able to claim to, though it is expanded more if you include the UICA Champions Cup in addition to the Champions League of the IFCF. Adding in that era though also drastically increases the success of Vanorian teams though and as those over in Audioslavia might say, cue Scandroid or something of similar effect with their informative documentaries of the World Cup known as The Idiot Project. Getting back to the question at hand though, it is an intriguing question that is hard to find a suitable way to tackle it due to the different nature of both competitions as well as the different rates at which they do occur. Is it a question that although is asked and quite an intriguing thought exercise to perhaps pursue, would there even be a suitable answer that would be awaiting one at the end of that pathway?

The initial inclination is to obviously say that the World Cup is obviously the most difficult competition in all of sport to actually win, with its vast amount of competitors and with it only occurring every two years or thereabouts (fluid time is a hell of a drug, i'll tell you what). For all the pomp and bluster about the fact the the Marauders are the most decorated team in all of the World Cup history, the fact of the matter is that it has been over thirty editions since they have lifted the trophy and etched in another star to their crest. If the side fails to win the World Cup this edition of the competition, more time will have passed between their fifth and sixth titles than their last title and the time at which the side entered into the competition in the first place, all the way back in the twenty-ninth edition of the event. It is a staggering statistic and one that is quite humbling and sobering for the enormous Vanorian pride, though that pride had been well earned through such might as which we are unlikely to ever see again, bar some rare miracle like the Marauders teams of the 40s or the Aguazul teams of the mid to late 50s. Even the emphatic run that Schottia had in the late 70s failed to produce the same domination in trophies as the other two were able to accomplish during their greatest heights.

However then when you compare the amount of winners in the IFCF Champions League and the UICA Champions Cup to that of which actually enter the tournament and the scales begin to become a bit more even. While there are teams like Raynor City United from the Empire who have been able to ascend that mountain more than once, the statistics say that you are more likely than not to be eliminated before the knockout stages even began, with just over half of the participants per edition eliminated before the group stage even to this day. Associations have formed, entered, and disappeared without even sending a team into the knockouts of the competition much less sending a team into the Final and winning it. For every United, there are hundreds of teams who enter into the competition that never see the light of a group stage, whose association never manage to get into the top thirty-two of the rankings much less the top sixteen and have a top twenty team in the world. The race to the top of the coefficient ladder by either association or club is not a race at all but rather an endurance sprint in which very few make it to the finish line.

Simply put, both competitions present a large barrier to entry that federations, associations, and clubs have to work for long periods of time to get into a competitive position and then they need a bit of luck to go their way to get beyond that. While there are of course outliers and exceptions to this rule, it is by and large the reality for almost every one of the above reality that they have to contend with and then attempt to overcome. It was a bit of luck as well as the hosting of a World Cup that was the catalyst for the run that the Marauders went in from World Cups 39 to 52, where they were easily the best team in the world on a consistent basis, only to be rivaled by Starblaydia. That tale is known quite well by now in the annals of the World Cup history in some form or fashion. Which competition is the easier one to win? Honestly, the odds of winning either are so astronomical for your average competitor that they would be better suited going out and buying a lottery ticket or more likely to be struck by lighting if outside during a storm. Neither come easy and even the best teams at the time can have an off day and it all come for nothing. Does it mean that you should not try? Not at all, that competitive spirit is what burns inside all those who have managed to ascend to the top and all those who are yet still to come.

Paul Reynard. Former League winner as player and manager. Twice manager of the year. Prior candidate for the Elmyian job. Recently coming off an unfortunate and poorly received run as manager of Corrupt Petrostate. Currently sat in his pants in public, chain smoking and glowering at his phone. A glob of ash tumbled awkwardly, leaving a trail of dust on his sun bleached brown smoking jacket and settled on his white vest, joining the multitude of stains that had made their home there. He flicked it off and hacked up some phlegm best not spit that out.

A waiter came up behind him and he startled slightly "Christ Mario you'll make me die of fright if you keep sneaking up on me."

"Signor Reynard, it's Andreas"

"Well I didn't ask for your life story. Bring me the usual please, and a brandy as it's Friday."

"Um yes signor. But... Do you think you could possibly wear something on your... Lower half?"

"Oi, I am, these boxers'd take you three shifts to buy Mario. Three shifts mind you. I don't have time for you to be rude, go get me order"

"Yes sir, but. In future, would you consider wearing trousers?"

"HAHA I like yer guts Mario. But no, I won't be." Mario turned away, rolled his eyes and went inside. Reynard went back to looking at his phone. It never made a noise these days. Sure he didn't particularly need the money, say what you like about Corrupt Petrostate's total disregard for human rights, they pay the people who aren't slaves very well. But, the wife had increasingly nagged him about getting a job. A more reflective man might consider just why their wife is so desperate for them to be out the house. But Reynard refuses to. Pull at that thread and he might have to consider not drinking until three in the morning, shouting at people on the TV and pissing in the sink. Couldn't give those up, I'd lose my self-respect.

So he'd opted for a new hobby, getting publicly drunk in his pants and being explosively rude to people working in hospitality.

A different waiter came back with his order. Same as he had everyday, a pint of lager, chips and an entire hollowed out baguette, filled with mince meat, cheese, garlic, fried eggs and mashed potato, battered and deep fried in clarified butter. A traditional dish from Diepfleet, where he'd grown up, and the key culprit in his cholesterol approaching "astronomical" levels well I've never felt healthier. "Oi Tom, where's Mario, he get scared off?"

"It's John..."

"Didn't ask yer life story lad, Jesus you lot are chatty. Where's me brandy, it's Friday, it's brandy Friday."

"It's..."

"Don't care, fetch it me now" he frowned as the waiter trotted off useless sods. He took an enormous bite of the sandwich, the grease ran down both his fingers and his chin, by the time he was finished his chest hair glistened under the increasingly harsh late morning sun. He was just about to drift off to sleep when suddenly

BZZZ BZZZZ BZZZ

The fuck is that? he looked about confused before he heard his phone thud as it hit the floor. He went to pick it up, it nearly shot out of his greased up hands. He gripped it, banging his head on the table as he swung back up "hello? This is Paul Reynard, who's calling?"

"Hi Paul, this is Matt Pagnall, from the Mosfleet Star."

He knew this paper well, a tabloid rag. Probably wanted comment on something "Oh hello. Look if you want comment I've nowt to say, I'm no rent-a-gob"

"No, no, of course. No nothing like that Paul, my word."

"Oi, that's Mr. Reynard to you pal. Has been since before you were born most likely."

"My apologies Mr. Reynard. But no, I'm not calling for comment "

"The hell d'you want then?"

"Well, as you might know, one of our opinion writers has just left us for the Beaucester..."

"I didn't ask for a life story, my word, spit it out man, what do you want?"

There was a pause oh god I hope he doesn't hang up "we want you to be our new opinion writer."

Paul paused. This wasn't a terrible prospect, it'd get him doing something "well look that's a nice offer and all, but I'm still in the management game"

"Hey look, we know that, we all think you'd be great for the national team. But maybe this could give you the platform you need to... You know, um... Advocate for yourself."

Another pause "look I'll think about it."

"It pays $10k an article"

"I'll see you Monday."

Rambles WC IV

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Apr 03, 2024 2:51 pm

The Random Rambles of a Jaguar - World Cup 96 Edition
with Killian Looker

Welcome back to this Random Ramble. It's crazy how opinions can shift in a matter of days in two different cities in the same country. If you want to find out how emotionally exhausting sport in this country can be then please, read on.
MD7: TJUN-ia 5-4 United Hawkland
MD8: TJUN-ia 1-6 Delte

My Take
In Carlandas, United Hawkland were in town and the game that would be produced would be one of the biggest rollercoaster matches in TJUN-ian football history. Like...seriously. If you got a ticket to this match please, check on your heart condition with your nearest GP because you went on a fucking ride. Alexander de Klerk got a brace after only 2-0 minutes, but both Fernandino and Jackson Smith-Scott forced their hands to leave it at 2-2 at halftime. After that, things just got progressively more and more chaotic as things went along as Dixon Albinson got a brace off the bench, Regina McDuff got two of her own to level things up with 10 to go and in the 89th, it would be Paek Un-hui that ended up scoring the winner. 5-4. A cracker of a game.

Then it was time to start the 2nd half against Delte, the rare occasion that the World Champions come to town. The National Stadium was hoping for a valiant performance against the #3 ranked team and things were looking good to start as Frederico Jiminez scored after only 9 minutes...and then things fell apart. Ro Manse-Camms got a hattrick, Hennequin Perdu a brace and Chipper Osgood got the 6th. It was so bad and fans were leaving with 20 minutes on the clock, a rarity in these parts. It was so bad that our friends in Delte thought that we were on our day off. This wasn't a day off...this was a nightmare. Probably the worst home defeat we've ever suffered.
Reactions
The fans loved our fightback mentality in Carlandas, but all that goodwill was swept away in the capital. Like holy fuck, things were bad. The fans want answers...they want to feel something again.

Lykken

Lykken leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. He worked the fingers of his left hand in a repetitive motion, knuckles making a quiet rasp as they rubbed against each other. The forefinger and thumb of his other hand were looped around the neck of a half empty bottle of beer. A few feet away, on the couch, sat Big Al Balfour and Vitali “Lættis” Govorov, subordinates of his, but friends as well. Neither of them looked particularly relaxed either. Big Al tapped his fingers arhythmically against the taut leather of the armrest. Lættis was leaned forward similarly to Lykken, and was rubbing his palms together absently. On the screen they were all watching, a taped news report played on the previous week’s shootout in Lublova. It focused primarily on the supposed progress the police were making in tracking down the perpetrators, who were still at large.

Lykken and his associates, of course, knew almost for a certainty the identity of the man who’d led the attack. Kaj “Rumianek” Zidlicky, a captain of the Lutenblag Mutri. Rumianek had picked up a truck full of weapons from Lykken’s crew just a couple months ago as part of a major transaction between the Lutenblag gang and their own, Santraginus-based operation. Guns, particularly new guns, were still much more readily available on the Isle of Squornshelous than elsewhere in the Confederacy, so while it wasn’t an everyday occurrence, they hadn’t thought too much of the deal. It was all too obvious to them now though, that they had provided Rumianek and his crew with the equipment they needed to go after their Lublova rivals.

What was worse, they were due to make a second delivery to complete the transaction, driving to Lutenblag themselves with several boxes of explosives.

“There’s no way this doesn’t find its way back to us eventually,” Lættis moved his hands to rub two fingers against each temple.

“Keep it together,” Lykken knew he couldn’t have his top man fall apart at a time like this. “It’s not great that the Molvanians have decided to start killing each other just when we’re so closely involved with them, but the deal was tight, and where the guns came from is a long way down the list for the cops just now.”

“They’ll get to it eventually though, and then we’re all in the shit.”

“There’s plenty of time before that happens for us to get out in front of things. I talked to Volstad just yesterday. This whole deal was her project so you know she’s going to handle things because if we go down she’ll get thrown in with us. She’s been talking with the obshchak* and they’re already on top of it, reconnecting with our police friends and making some new ones. There’s no heat on us yet, and we’ll be over a hundred miles from Lublova to make our delivery next week.”

“Are you serious, Lykken? The whole country’s on pins and needles after the biggest mass shooting in a lifetime and we’re still going to drive to Molvania in a truck full of grenades?”

“We gave our word. And don’t forget that we wouldn’t have to do this if you hadn’t let those boxes go overboard in the straits in the first place. No, we’ll be fine. No one’s on to us yet, and by the time anyone might start sniffing around, we’ll have our cops lined up to block their way. This’ll blow over soon enough and it’ll be business as usual again. You’ll see.”

No Rules!
Image

Following the disappointing draw against the East Leaf Islands, the Vdarans knew that there were no more easy games. From here on out, every team they faced knew where they were standing, and knew what they had to do. Second place would, of course, mean a playoff spot - the playoffs had been kind to Vdara just last cycle, but the general uncertainty surrounding that sort of position meant that it would be preferred to avoid such a position. To do so, however, would involve putting in a stellar performance against the top seeds on their own turf, the Imperial Hippodrome. Perhaps the most opulent stadium that these players would ever encounter. Words, and indeed pictures, simply could not suffice the description this stadium deserves. The Darling of the Dreamed Realm, a daunting prospect indeed. Nevertheless, not long before the team would travel through a portal to the Realm, Markos decided that he’d use his tried and tested oration skills to gee up the team.

”Alright, it’s time for you all to pull the finger out and get ready to put your adult pants on. Make no mistake, this is the biggest game of our qualifiers yet, so I don’t want a single fucking peep from any of you while I go over this, got it? Right, for starters, this won’t be some normal place we go to. I mean, you could probably have assumed that from judging by the weird fucking Tory clown crew who bumbled around like a bunch of fuckwits, spanking folks’ arses while their bellies full of caviar jiggled, but still. These people don’t live in our world - they live in their own wee zone of fuckery, some kind of interdimensional pish. Not my thing, if you ask me, but each to their own. Now, you cannae fly there, you cannae sail there, and you certainly cannae fucking walk there. In a couple of minutes’ time, The Holy Empire’s very own crew of hooded cultists will arrive through a big donut in the centre of the pitch, and invite us through for tea, coffee, and a wee scone. They will then set us up with some of the best accommodation you’ll have ever stayed in - honestly, you’d never believe how good it is. Instant room service, showers that are immediately scalding hot, the comfiest beds in the multiverse, et cetera, cetera. Trust NONE of it. It’s just one of these simple ways to put you off your game, to make you feel that bit more relaxed, that bit less on edge. There’s no real way to combat it, since it would be rude to reject such a lovely proposal from our wonderful opponents, but just keep it in the back of your mind. You’re not there to be their guest, or to put their service to the test. You’re there to get ready, to get your mind in the zone to face this mob. You know what they’re like, a bunch of riddies with some poor guy at the touchline trying to corral them like a sheepdog. We cannot - and we will not - let ourselves get distracted by any of their antics. Oh, and the way Sophia, if wee BoJo tries to spank your arse again, you have my express permission to bite his stupid fuckin’ nose off like a berry from a tree. Gnarl into it with your teeth, give the absolute weapon the lack of respect he deserves. The same goes for all of you - any disrespect you get, you give them it right back to them. Give them a test of their own medicine, and their blood if need be. Anything and everything must be done if we are to give a good account of ourselves, so let’s make sure and give these twits a grand battle to the end, eh? Rules are out the window, let’s do everything we can, and most importantly; LET’S FUCKING GO!

As the players cheered at Markos’ rallying cry, The Holy Empire’s monks - as if by command - appeared through a portal. The Vdarans, suitcases by their sides, donning relatively posh suits, put on a brave face as they entered the Dreamed Realm for the first time. They’d played The Holy Empire many times (four, to be exact), but never had they done it on their own turf. In truth, they never really knew what to expect, but what they did know was that this was going to be an experience like no other. May the best team win.

OF FATES AND FORTUNES
Chapter Five - The Journey

The day of the match finally arrived, the days seemed to crawl by as she waited. Never in her life had she been this anxious about a football match, she chuckled to herself. The early morning sun struck daggers into her and while she would normally only ever see this time of day if she was still up from the previous night’s festivities, this morning she had a purpose in her wakefulness as this unheavenly hour.

She wanted to checkout the hotel where this “charity team” was staying, lucky for her the office building across from it had a floor that was in a bizarre limbo state of not being occupied but also unable to be sold or rented so she wouldn’t be disturbed, and the office building security was easy enough to gain access to and generated herself an access card, clearly something the building managers were cutting corners on. She had gone in early the previous couple of days so as not to raise any suspicions, in case somebody who actually took their job seriously decided to look any closer but none had.

This morning was no different, scanning her badge, saying a far to chipper hello for this time of the day, and was met with the same indifferent grunt she had gotten every day so far. She headed up to the limbo floor and took out her big telephone camera, looking to get some decent quality photos of the players to run through facial recognition. Her torturous morning was rewarded by catching the charity team leaving the hotel and managing to get clear shots of many of the players, also she noted that again all the players were wearing the same kit, not a football kit to play in but the kind of branded kits you would see the big teams of Tanirinthia wear for training/press conference etc. She zoomed in on the logo, certainly nothing she had ever seen before, but given her lack of football knowledge not unlikely, there was text there as well “Valhallan Football Association”, she certainly had never heard of Valhallan before, maybe pertaining to Valhalla? A quick search in the laptop next to her returned no results and the suggestion of did she mean Valeswood and certainly no football association from it. Curiouser and curiouser she thought. By now the team had all gotten onto the bus now, but she had gotten the pictures she needed, uploaded them to her server and started the facial recognition tool running, would most likely take until after the match to find any results, so she packed up and rewarded herself with the still warm pastry she had picked up on her way, guess there are some advantages to getting up early she thought.

Evening came and she headed to Emerald Park, as she went her eye was now drawn to the occasional person wearing the same logo football shirts, and some carrying banners saying Polar Islandstates, all seemingly hushing conversations if they noticed others approaching them. But the oddness didn’t stop there, and the beginning of the match the charity sang a song of some kind that was not only sung by the team, but their supporters in the crowd also seemed to belt out (although not tunefully I will say), our side also got a song, an old song of Tanirinthia that I don’t many people myself included would fully remember the words to. She hadn’t been to many football matches but what followed seemed to be a very competitive and intense match, not exactly what I would expect for a charity game, and when the match ended with a 1-0 loss for the charity team you could really feel a palpable sense of loss from both the players, coaching staff and supporters in the crowd.

With the match over she headed out through the tunnels but got turned around in their labyrinthine nature and ended up finding herself coming out where the charity team bus was standing, with seemingly no-one around. What a stroke of luck she thought. The side of the bus where the bags were stored was open and inviting, perhaps some identification or devices or something would be in one of the bags, so she pulled one out. Having a rummage around she found very strange things inside, identification yes but looked like nothing she had ever seen, what she guessed was money, but not money she had ever seen, phones but not a brand she had ever heard of. Before she could process any further she was startled by noises approaching, trying to head back where she came from but the noises were also coming from there. She was going to be caught, where to hide? She crawled into the underspace with the bags, placing as many bags in front of her as she could. She could now hear the people outside, but she couldn’t understand anything they were saying, she thought she was paranoid but they were talking in code even here? The doors to her hiding place slammed shut and the coded voices drowned out as the engine started up.

Hours passed before the bus finally stopped, when the side opened up a bitterly cold wind came in, lucky for her it seemed they were still in the dejected state at the team all blindly grabbed bags and no-one saw her, so when the voices had been quiet for a while, she popped open the side from the inside and stepped out of the bus. She certainly wasn’t in St Cirth anymore.

Postby Saterun » Wed Apr 03, 2024 3:30 pm

Turf crunched under the players' feet in the al-Fazir Memorial Park. Located on the banks of the Rescondenso River, which wrapped around Tsear, it was a beautiful stadium, with the surrounding architecture of the ponds and art making it all the nicer. The sun was setting, and Saterun was making its return to WCQ after their bye. It had been a long time, but these two nations had faced before. Thiago Esparza couldn't remember exactly when, but it was around the 14th or so IAC. However, they were two very different teams from when Saterun had lost decisively to Sannyamathland to be eliminated in the group stage of the Claw's first IAC. The next 90-plus minutes would show that to be very true.

Although they were a little slow going (an early mistake almost led to the visitors scoring a quick goal), the Claws soon started to assert their dominance. Their recent performances, especially the win against Saltidia, had galvanized them. Ganharbola was starting to take full effect. After the initial scare, there were very few Sannyamathland attempts. For the rest of the game, it was all Saterun. They really kicked off the match with Glenn Lundquist's early rocket of a goal. A few dicing passes had left the central midfielder open on the edge of the area, similar to Andrei Coiro in the last game. Glenn hit a perfect finesse shot low to the left corner, completely out of the goalkeeper's reach. The fans had packed out the stadium to see the Claws take revenge (old grudges die hard in Saterun), and this was the perfect start for fans and Kameron's men.

In the 27th, they struck again. Midway in the visitors' half, Hans-Jürgen Becker was hacked down by a Sannyamathland midfielder. Once Andrei had set up to take the free kick, Saterun's more forward players started to push the line into the box. As Andrei raised his hands, they all moved back outward. The Sannyamathland players followed. However, just as Andrei's foot his the ball, the Claws charged into the box. The ball initially missed the first few players, but it bounced kindly to Thiago. He took a shot, only for it to deflect off a defender. The ball rolled for a few feet, only for Avishai Demare to come charging in and smack it full-laces. The goalkeeper had no chance as the ball lodged firmly in the top corner. It made Avishai such a good player that he had these things in his back pocket.

The Claws would deal one more (and arguably decisive) blow before the end of the half. After Cipriano Dalca made a crucial tackle near the edge of the box, the ball was quickly moved up the field and out to the wings. Hans-Jürgen had it near the corner flag, but he was being pressed by two defenders. However, Fabian Cruz made an overlapping run similar to the type that had been devastating in the IAC. Hans-Jürgen played it out to him, and he swung in a cross. It was low, running the risk of the goalkeeper catching it, but Fabian had hit it perfectly. It went straight to Thiago, who nudged it just past the keeper into an open space at the near post. Within one half of football, Saterun was 3 goals ahead.

The players were in very high spirits. But everyone remembered last time. This game, they didn't let complacency creep in. Kameron said a few words, mainly reminding them that it wasn't over, but they didn't need reminding. You could feel the masked tension in the room. Yes, they were up by more than last time, but that feeling was still there. As they walked back on to the field, however, they were reminded of the advantage they held. Seeing the numbers on the scoreboard restored some of the missing confidence. They could see this out.

If there were any lingering doubts, they were quashed in the 63rd minute. After a period of rather slow play, Andrei Coiro made a slicing pass through almost the entire Sannyamathland defense to put Maksymillian Bates clear out in front. he took it past the goalkeeper easily, but saw his angle closed off by two defenders. Maybe he could fit it through, but it seemed unlikely. Here, he just had to have faith. He remembered seeing Thiago out of the corner of his eye. Maksymillian struck the ball sharply with the back of his heel, sending it skidding into the center of the box. Unfortunately, Thiago wasn't there. Fortunately, Hans-Jürgen was. All alone, he was never missing this chance. The amount of power applied in the shot was probably unnecessary, but it knocked the point home. Saterun had avenged their old demons.

Finally, near the very end of the match, a frustrated Sannyamathland defender upended Thiago in the box. It was pretty clear, and the appeals of the visitors fell on deaf ears. On most teams, the captain would take the penalty, but Thiago was far and away the best pure finisher on the team. As he stared down the goalkeeper, he knew he was going to score. This keeper had nothing left to fight for. It was a simple matter of sliding it into the side netting on the right to put Saterun up 5-0 and lock up the game. Finally, after a very rough start, Saterun gotten a statement win. Ganharbola was, for the time, working. Saterun had something to build on at the halfway stage.

When the initial exit polls came through, they were certainly concerning for Clituleng Giisost and his Workers' Party. The forecast was for them to be reduced to a central estimate of 114 seats in the 300-seat Kytlerian parliament - with the NUP on 98, and able to potentially form a government with the support of the FFP on 52. Most pre-election polling had the Workers' on around 125 seats, down some way from their historic majority last time but enough to comfortably continue to govern alongside smaller left-leaning parties and perhaps the big-tent indigenous party PIN.

But as early actual results came in, it became clear that the exit poll was a little off base. In particular, the Workers' Party were overachieving again in the Northern Downs - not enough to win many individual seats, but enough that they would hold on to most of the regional list seats that they gained at the last election. It was speculated that the return of an NUP government might threaten a return to sporting isolation if it was dependent on the FFP, and with the Kytlerian cricket team off to a fine start to their new era of existence pro-isolation sentiment in this conservative stronghold has weakened significantly.

The NUP and FFP did make significant progress in the south, but their hoped-for gains in the Expansion did not materialise; the Græntfjaller community, a key voting bloc in this area, were reported to be concerned about the prospect of a change of Kytlerian government at a time of crisis over the Alps (and they too tended to be pro-international sport and wary of an NUP government's dependent on a pro-isolation FFP).

By the time the dust settled, it was obvious that the pre-election polls were basically right and the exit poll wrong; analysis after the fact suggested that the divergence came from underestimating the Workers' Party in the Northern Downs and overestimating the NUP both there and in the Eastern Corridor. The Workers' Party ended on 126 seats, the NUP just 80, and while they were 25 seats short of a majority (or functionally 23 given the four seats won by Varnian separatists who do not take these seats), this was handily covered by a combination of the Greens (17 seats) and PIN (14), whose leaders quickly confirmed they would support Giisost in a "confidence and supply" arrangement that would mean they would not bring down a Workers' Party minority government.

The speculation from some in the right-wing media that an NUP-FFP government and the return of international isolation were not out of the question may have affected the Kytlerian soccer team in their World Cup 96 qualification process, a dismal draw against New Fernia representing a new low in that regard. Now that fear is gone, perhaps Andrew Patterson's team will step up in the second half of the process and potentially take that momentum into a Cup of Harmony should they get an invite (assuming there is one to be invited to). The upward momentum of Kytlerian soccer has taken its first big jolt in this cycle, but with numerous young Kytlerians making their mark both at the Di Bradini Cup and for their clubs in the NSL, the long-term future remains bright.

Well, it was not pretty and though fans and newspaper editors alike across the nation seemingly misread the schedule thinking that the Wanderers had their bye during the previous window rather in the forthcoming window, the Wanderers did something that they have yet to do in the campaign. That of course is to play fully like a first potted team and take the full six points on offer during the international window and maintain their spot in the top two of the group, though the latter was helped by the Quebecois getting a victory over Amenria away from Quebec just a few days after the Wanderers had accomplished a much needed victory in the Stade de Torgos over the same team. It was the first win that the Wanderers had had one their home ground this campaign and at the opening kickoff you could definitely sense the nervousness among the crowd that what had once been a fortress for their beloved team no longer held the same sort of mystique of imposed the same sort of pressure on the opposition that it once did, that the fans no longer made an atmosphere that pushed their players on and put dread into the opponents with the want for full time.

Nawar Taqwaa Bazzi however was quick to reassure the crowd as the Turkish striker thundered one in from just inside the box in the ninth minute and put some of the tension to rest. It was the sort of start that Thor would have been hoping for, to keep the crowd invested in the game and a bit of a shot of morale of the players who had been in some dour spirits entering into the game, having been on the wrong side of upsets in three of their first five qualifying matches. It was a bit of a rut and the path towards the top of the table was far from easy, but adversity has a way of making for the strongest of personalities and can often make success taste all the sweeter if and once achieved. Ilona Kárpáty sent the crowd into an uproar five minutes before the halftime whistle with a volley from the left of the spot and the home side was feeling good about itself. That good feeling lasted until the eighty-first when the visitors brought one back, but the defense held firm and the midfield did its work to maintain possession and see out the challenge of their competitors for the top two spots and get a much needed victory. It kept them in touch of the top and just two points out of second going into the second half of the campaign.

The second half began in the Stade de Torgos, taking on the more scary than their record and ranking let on Siovanija and Teusland, who might consider themselves quite unfortunate to have only gathered four points from the first half of the campaign. They were giving the Wanderers a go of it, both sides putting up a pair of goals in the first half hour with Salai netting a brace for the home side. In the second half hour, whatever momentum or morale booster that the visitors had been able to channel in the first half was overwhelmed by a desperate attacking Wanderers side who knew they needed the full three points and could not allow for more dropped points in their home ground if they wished to try and track down Quebec at the top of the table, with news of their victory over Amenria having filtered in at the half time break. A goal three minutes after the restart from Sumaiya Zakiyyah Aswad was followed up five minutes later by Jakub Svatoš hitting his head to the ball after a corner scramble before the game was iced in the seventy-third by second half substitute Bogdan Laszlo, who was getting some minutes in front of the Pasargan crowd.

Six points and what some might call a theft of the second place spot away from Amenria after the window had come to its conclusion, with a pair of home victories. It was certainly a bit of a shot in the arm and a temporary cure for the malaise that was creeping into both the team as well as her supporters, but the path ahead remains ever difficult. After actually having their bye, the team travels to Quebec, whose only dropped points came in their first match and against the previously high flying table topping Amenria side. Quebec and Pasarga have a lot of shared history both on the pitch and off of it, with it heavily speculated that the Queen is being courted by one of the royals or nobles from the kingdom. Her father came was a relation to that of the Quebec crown, showing how deep those ties do run. Yet on the pitch, the two sides have met a few times recently, and the Wanderers will be hoping for a better outcome than when Quebec visited Torgos earlier in the campaign. That loss was the first home game for the side and had set the tone for both how the side would perform at home as well as for the next few games as they struggled to a pair of nil all draws after that defeat. A lack of offense has held the Wanderers back, with half of their goals coming in the last match and Quebec is not known for being charitable on the defensive end. If the side is going to escape out of Quebec with a point or three, the defense which has been stellar will need to be near perfect and the strikers be opportunistic when their chances do come.

Gustav watched the 3.53 from Geidenheim roll through, late as usual, and then returned to his phone screen, uninterested. Life in the Daleskeer Hut was far quieter than it used to be since they'd installed the new automated system. The only thing he was asked to do these days was monitor the screen readouts for error warnings or contradictory feedback. Everything else was handled at the headquarters down the line. A quick glance to see that everything was green and it was back to the phone. Emmanuele Niemi had posted something he oughtn't to on his deja.vu account again, and pretty much the entire nation was hooked on the drama.

Shaking his head as he put his phone down for a bit, Gustav had to at least admit the young man had an energy he couldn't hope to emulate. Not even in his younger years in fact would he have been able to do what that lad was doing. The indignity of it all. Gustav didn't care how well he'd played against Hakushiya, to then go online and criticise the government like that? What did the government have to do with football, anyway?

Had young people no respect anymore? It was the same all over the nation, he thought, sadly. First it was machines replacing Old Lem, then it was youngsters calling out the Secretary General in public, and then it was having that smarmy git down the line who was half his age telling him what he could and couldn't do in his own hut.

Thank Thor there was still a person like Orion Lund in charge, thought Gustav. Now there was a man who would restore the Federation back to it's rightful place at the top of the pile. It wasn't going to happen overnight, obviously, these things take time, but Lund was thean for the job. Gustav checked the screen for red lights, and went back to his phone again.

Sargossan forces hadn't made a peep in recent years, and Gustav ascribed all of that at Lund's feet. A man he was proud to call a leader. He'd voted for the man every single time he'd been able to, and he would do so again the next time. Gustav sniffed. Of course, young Mathilde on the evening shift after him was convinced there wouldn't be a next time, now, but what did she know? Impudent young pup. It was people like her that emboldened the likes of Niemi, Gustav was sure of it.

An orange light flashed, and Gustav leapt into action. Dropping his phone, he checking the readings. An east-west special was crossing his sector and it was up to Gustav to clear the lines. He'd like to see Mathilde know how t-

Oh. Headquarters had already done it.

Gustav sat back, full of resentment. They'd be retiring him next year, and he didn't know how many trains he'd actually get to manage between now and then. Mathilde had the same ideas about the future as that lot down the line, apparently. It was a strange, dangerous new world. And it was leaving him behind.

He only hoped he'd get to see a strong and stable Valhalla before he popped his clogs. The Party hadn't managed to put that into action yet of course, but, well... These things take time, don't they?

HOOPS NEED TO “SHOW THEY WANT TO QUALIFY” – SVOK
UNUSUAL GROUP 20 NEEDS ONE TEAM TO TAKE IT BY THE SCRUFF OF THE NECK

by Nevenka Planinc

Ivica Svok’s Mytanija tenure started so well. The team went on a winning run, keeping clean sheets and preventing their opposition from creating anything much. Crucially, during this run, they always found a way to put the ball in the net themselves – sometimes from a set-piece, sometimes from a very controlled attacking gameplan which suffocated the opponent and yet still found a way to get the all important goal to seal the result. Svok then moved away from this plan during the play-off and the group stage of World Cup 95. The changes worked, Mytanija got to the World Cup and then got out of the group stage against all the odds, eventually seen off by a Graentfjall side which has caused the Hoops problems for the best part of a decade.

The Nyva Zvornik coach was determined to play in a more progressive style once he got the national team job permanently. He was beginning to get somewhat pigeonholed as a defensive expert, a tag which is not necessarily a bad thing but also not really representative of the style of play he has instilled in a resurgent Nyva side at domestic level. Sources indicated that he wanted to play in a similar style to that which Lev Repin popularised in his time in charge of the Hoops, believing that a 2-3-5 shape in possession would allow Denis Ovsyannikov to get nearer to the goal alongside a pair of forwards – something he hoped would allow the team to up their creation of big chances and make games more comfortable.

These tactical changes have also necessitated the use of wide fullbacks, tasking them with getting up and down the flanks to provide width in the attacking third but also to recover to form part of the back four when out of possession. Svok made a pointed comment when he took over from Misel Ravnjak, saying that he would play in a shape which wouldn’t force players to recover over long distances as he felt that was why Mytanija had struggled and concede needless goals in the first part of qualification for World Cup 95. It seems he has moved away from this formula since becoming the manager permanently and the question has to be why?

In press conferences he has been happy to provide an answer, pointing to the fact that Mytanija’s two young fullbacks Mumin Jesenko and Radola Depreradovic play like this for their club side’s and that they are likely to become two of the finest players in their positions in the coming years. He didn’t want to ‘stunt their development’ and felt that ‘giving them this opportunity early in their careers will stand them and [Mytanija] in good stead in the future’. Fair enough. He also argued that Mytanija’s problems have not been defensive during qualification for World Cup 96, so the issue is not moving away from the defensive shape that the team used previously, but not finding their fluidity in the new shape in attack:

“We’ve only conceded three goals through seven matches, so I’m not overly concerned about our defensive shape, it seems to work reasonably well. When a side is struggling it helps to do things simply, so when I came into the role I wanted to use a shape which would allow players to be close to where they needed to be both in and out of possession. Things have moved forwards since then, I’ve introduced some new players and we came into this World Cup feeling a little bit better about ourselves than when I took over. We’ve changed things. Defensively it hasn’t made too much difference, but I think some of the players are struggling to click with the 2-3-5 in the attacking phase. It’s strange because a lot of them play in this shape at club level, so I’m wondering perhaps if it’s personnel – maybe I need to have another look at the profiles of the players I’m putting together on the pitch instead.”

It’s an honest – and fairly detailed – assessment from a manager who is never afraid to delve into the tactical intricacies of his teams. It’s also difficult to see who he might change at first glance, though the changes pretty much have to come in midfield and attack. Whilst the Hoops might have only conceded three goals through seven games, they’ve also only scored three. Their record of 1 win, 5 draws and 1 loss is rather ridiculous, leaving Mytanija down in 5th in Group 20 on 8 points and yet somehow, miraculously, still only three points (and a few goals) off the top spot. If Svok can change things there might be another comeback on the cards for a manager who rescued Mytanija from an even more perilous position during qualification for the last World Cup. Where do those changes come from?

It feels at this point like Drazen Skara has played himself out of a starting berth. The 1923 Esca striker, whilst boasting an exceptional scoring record with the national team, has slowed down almost to a halt in terms of scoring and his general play is not offering as much as it did in the early years of his career. The thrilling forward seems to have gone into hibernation somewhere inside Skara’s imposing frame. Someone needs to bring it back out, but Mytanija cannot afford to wait for that day to come. Goran Papic-Papratovic, on the other hand, is an excellent all-rounder – he might not score as freely as Skara has at times during his career but his all-round game, bringing others into play and leading the press is excellent. It’s hard to see how Svok would remove Papic-Papratovic from the starting eleven.

So who will partner him? It’s clear that Svok is keen on two of his other strikers. Blaz Kovacec may not be having the finest season over in Taxhavn, but he’s done brilliantly whenever called upon for the national team and he is a more mobile, more exciting striker than perhaps anyone else we have at the moment. Svok also likes Lacina Issoumou. The big Mytanar-Ketioulais dual national held out for a Hoops cap, always believing that he was good enough to be called-up by the country of his birth and after impressing over in Kelssek his dream became a reality. He’s impressed in his limited minutes since debuting, able to put himself about, win aerial balls and hold the ball up well in the attacking third. It feels like Kovacec and Issoumou are in the ascendancy and may be who Svok turns to alongside GPP.

In midfield the options for changes are slightly more limited. Denis Ovsyannikov may not have been at the top of his game during World Cup 96 qualification, but he’s still been Mytanija’s biggest creative presence and Svok might rue the fact that a few of his teammates simply haven’t been on his wavelength at times when Ovsi has put chances on a plate for them, only for those chances to go begging. Nurija Papez also seems like a definite pick, being right up there in terms of deep-lying midfielders globally. It’s the two players who play in between them who might be tweaked a little over the coming games.

Stoja Stanoev seemed like a sure pick for nearly every match coming into qualification, but he’s not been able to replicate his club form for the national team and the question is whether Svok tries to play him into that form or thinks that enough is enough and a change needs to be made. If he does make a change it might be Alfonz Saksida who benefits, a player who is – again – a bit more of an all-rounder than the diminutive Stanoev. However, if Svok wants ball-striking around the edge of the box – Mytanija are struggling for goals after all – he may change to Ognjen Vogrin. Over in the TPL Vogrin has a reasonable scoring record from midfield, Svok could look to employ that to try to move out of this goal drought here. It’s also worth noting that Svok could turn to a familiar face in Slavko Frantsaliiski, a player he manages in Zvornik, to provide a bit more vision in his midfield three.

On the other side of the midfield three is another puzzle. Ante Saranja is big, physical, and a very useful player to have in the side when Mytanija lose the ball. He’s not covered himself in glory when Mytanija have been in possession during World Cup 96 qualifying, though, and it appears that Svok will make a change – it’s just a matter of who rather than if. Svok could look to utilise one of the players earmarked for the left-sided midfield position, perhaps Saksida, here to turn up the creativity in the side. It may leave Mytanija slightly more open to counterattacks, but it’s the goals that the Hoops need to ramp up post-haste. He could also, similar to the Vogrin choice, go for someone who seems to score a good amount of goals in Tikariot in the form of wily old veteran Mehir Altikulac. The Khalgarh Valley man certainly knows where the goal is, even if he’s perhaps not always the most aesthetically pleasing in his methodology out on the pitch.

Changes will come, Svok seems to have made that decision. We will only find out who makes the cut when the teams are announced, but Svok will need the changes to work whoever he goes for. Sources at the FSM have indicated that some at the governing body are regretting the choice to go for the fan favourite, feeling that they rather rushed into giving him the job permanently due to the feel-good factor surrounding the team after World Cup 95. Svok will want to keep the job permanently, though he dismissed any speculation about his future, instead stating that he was only focussing on the job at hand and that he needed his players to ‘show they want to qualify’ in the next double header against Recuecn and Brannfjord.

Carpathia and Ruthenia throw away golden chance in mad thirteen minutes

After watching the results of our bye matchday you may have been forgiven for believing the footballing gods were smiling on us, with Ochre Islands holding top seeds Ko-oren to a 0-0 draw, and the sesquipedalian Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove managing to take all three points against Sarzonia things were looking good, just ahead on tiebreakers over Sarzonia and within striking distance of Ko-oren. In an all to familiar theme until the six-nineth minute of the game, well actually until the eighty-second minute you would have thought that luck had carried on. A dominant first half performance away from home had Carpathia and Ruthenia with a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time and adding a third in the sixtieth. However going three nothing down seemed to wake up the sleeping giant of Ochre Islands, and nine minutes later the first goal started a remarkable comeback for the Islanders finished thirteen minutes later with a sublime strike from Twonames for their brace. I won't take anything away from the Ochre Islands by saying anything other than they played some truely remarked football once they woke up, but perhaps we should have pressed our advantage earlier and taken it away with them as we could have easily been five or even six goals up earlier in the match, one thing we really need to takeaway from this match is we have to take our chances when we can or else it can all slip away.

However we aren't the only teams slipping Ko-oren once again falling to opposition they should really not be troubled by with a 2-1 loss to Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove, this leaves the group in a four-horse race with only 3 points seperating the top four teams, we may have slipped here but we can't afford anymore slip ups if we want to end up in the top half of that four horse race.

BPNT look to “tighten the noose” on opponents
Scott McCrae
The Daily Mail Chief Soccer Writer

The Baker Park National Team are aiming towards securing their grip on the second spot in the Group 12 table when they face Raspotchje and Al-Tamazgha on matchdays 9 & 10 and also keeping their eyes on the scoreboard for out of town results.

Sylestone remain perfect at the top of the table and will travel to Zenic, who are tied with the Bees for second, before hosting Jeruselem while Zenic will have their bye. An ideal scenario would be for the Gold & Black to climb to within 2 points of the Sentients and pull ahead of Zenic by 6; Sylestone will play out the rest of their fixtures as they've had their second half bye while Park will have their final day off ahead of the trip to Union of Ventura on matchday 12.

The failure to secure all three points in Endborough was a frustrating development for Manager Will Barnard who had hoped to get a bit of breathing room between BP and the Copa Rushmori holders, but the focus now is on maximum points prior to the visit of the Sentients on the penultimate matchday.

The History of Television in Baker Park
Part One

The recent match at the BBP National Stadium against Jeruselem marked the 1,100th in the history of the FAC and also came 70 years after the first ever live TV broadcast of a National Team match.

In 1954, the BPNT were in the middle of their first successful period in history, as it had lost or drawn the first 15 matches played between 1948-52; in 1953 the team played the first ever home fixture—4 in a row in fact—and the match in question here was the fifth time it had a home field advantage. Sportsmen's Park was the scene for the third and final national team contest in the 1954 'season' and the idea to televise it live was the brainchild of Alfred Sewell, the Head of Weekend Programming for the Commonwealth Broadcasting Company (CBC).

Established in 1931 and becoming the first nationwide TV network in 1947, the CBC had been ambitious in their broadcasting philosophy from the beginning. They had televised the first college football game & the first baseball game in 1951, followed the next year by forays into indoor sports with basketball and hockey. The BPNT game was not the first time a soccer match had been shown—the FAC Cup Final had been screened for the third straight year by '54 and several local Belle Haven clubs had league matches covered occasionally.

The 1953 census showed that Baker Park had grown from 10.2 million in 1943 to 16.7 million, with nearly 1/3 of the population under the age of 5. and in 1948, after the first full year of CBC television broadcasts, only about 2% of households owned a TV; by 1954 that had increased to approximately 19% or 955,000 households. Audience sizes were growing and one of the biggest increases was in sport programming.

The match was presented by Dennis James Foster who was already widely known as the “Voice of CBC Sport”, his smooth baritone with crisp pronunciation and even keeled volume perfect for any occasion. Nine years later he would be the announcer for the first UAC basketball National Championships to be shown live, both the women and men. He worked for the CBC for 40 years on both radio and TV calling his final event, the 1975 UAC Football Championship playoff which was the first live broadcast he did on radio in 1935.

The 3-1 victory for the Baker Park National Team in 1954 was the apex of then manager Oliver Pettibone's tenure, a third consecutive victory which was a first, the sixth win over an 8 match span which would extend to 8 wins and 4 draws against just a single loss over the following year and a half.
The 27,652 spectators was the largest crowd that the NT played in front of to that point and would not be exceeded until an away fixture in 1962 and the first iconic player of the Originals era, Toby Morris scored one of his 19 international goals.

When CBC debuted a second network channel, CBC2 in 1965, many of the sports that they had pioneered were shifted over to the new venture although the quality of the production never diminished.

The latest international window has taken us from the first half of World Cup 96 Qualifiers to the second, & what a wild sequence it has been for Qusmo’s national team. Despite never having to leave the friendly confines of Mastad Qusma, this was always likely to be the team’s toughest pair of fixtures in this qualifying campaign, as Qusmo took on both of the group’s two top-ranked teams in succession. Qusmo managed to get three points out of their fixtures, which any realistic fan of Qusmo would certainly take, but how they got those three points was extraordinarily unexpected: Qusmo was routed by Tanirinthia to the tune of four-nil, yet managed to rally to take down mighty Farfadillis just days later in a single-goal affair.

Qusmo got off to an inauspicious start to the window, as a Violet Bacchus brace & goals by Lark Holt & Raven Medina left no doubt which team was superior. Tanirinthia now joins Ceni, in World Cup 80 Qualifying, & Baker Park, in a friendly, as the only three teams to defeat Qusmo by a four-goal margin. Qusmo has never been beaten more soundly. It was also the first match in which Qusmo had ever conceded as many as four goals while being shut out themselves.

In fact, it was only the second time the national team had ever failed to score a goal at home while conceding more than once. The only previous such match had been Qusmo’s third-ever match, & first-ever loss: a two-nil defeat to Gopnikea early in World Cup 80 Qualifying. Forty-nine matches in Qusmo later — including five ostensibly neutral-site Copa Rushmori XXXII fixtures — the team conceded double what they had in their previous-worst home shutout. As a matter of fact, the team conceded as many goals in ninety minutes against Tanirinthia as they had conceded in every shutout loss they had experienced in a competitive match they had played within their own borders, combined, since that match against Gopnikea.

It was a worrying collapse in form. Qusmo had just finally gotten back on track defensively, having recorded clean sheets in away fixtures against both Polar Islandstates & Esporonia, bookending a two-one loss to Archalit in which Tlanx-Nulzk’s substitutes were major contributors to the negative result. Save for the addition of Yamaj-Zorno Mal in goal in place of Karar-Falax Zev for the match in Esporonia only, Tlanx-Nulzk had started the same ten outfield players for each of those three matches, & the same starting XI, including Karar-Falax Zev, took to the pitch at Mastad Qusma against Tanirinthia. However, as impressive as the team had looked in Polar Islandstates especially, they had clearly been studied by their opponents, & they had obviously been found out.

As a result, the starting lineup that faced Farfadillis was much changed from what had become before it. Featuring five changes from what had previously seemed to be a very settled side,

Farfadillis match commentary (goalscorer: Jerat-Forzu Mal [like their Qastyr days, & like pre-KMSQ national team, famous win secured by the efforts of a dynamo centre mid])

History of Farfadillis match (link to spreadsheet with raw data; first WCQ win by an unranked opponent over a top-ten opponent since Cormoe defeated fourth-ranked Zwangzug on WC93Q MD16, the same matchday unranked Sylestone drew with tenth-ranked Kandorith [on WC93Q MD5, the situation was reversed, with Sylestone winning & Cormoe securing a draw])

Vintage Spony Luq-style group commentary (current table: 19-15-12-9; with a Qusmo win over Tanirinthia in this window: 16-15-15-9; with a Qusmo loss to Farfadillis this window: 19-18-9-9; this window was very pivotal, & it was tremendously helpful to Tanirinthia, especially since they won their other match too)

Note to Hakushiya: Included is Qusmo’s starting XI for matchday nine at A25 Coliseum. Ibilx-Irtix will receive the captain’s armband for this match. Additionally, please do not change the players’ name order. For every player on the roster save for Betva & Sevet-Stokes, neither of which are starting, their name is written with their family name preceding their given name. For your convenience, I’ve formatted my lineup as you usually write them out.

Good evening Tikariot, welcome back to The Tikariot Files, where we look at some of Tikariot's most outrageous, brutal, mysterious criminal cases the nation has to offer - all of them unsolved.

The picture cuts to the logo of the show while images of prison cells, blood spatter and other crime-related footage is shown in the background, with a lone, sombre piano melody playing.

Image

Episode 5 takes place in the far west of Tikariot, more precisely in Alcassar, capital of the Acrassia province and third-largest city of the nation. It is known for its grand palaces and scorching heat, but, unfortunately, it has also gained some infamy due to one or more individuals who didn't seem to find it just hot enough and decided to add a little extra heat. Today, we will be looking at the case of the Alcassar Arsonist.

Image

Now, as the name implies, things are getting a little fiery today - and cryptic at the same time. Approximately one and a half years ago, a large blaze burned down a large warehouse at the outskirts of the city. There were no casualties and everybody thought it was just an unfortunate coincidence as investigations into the cause of the fire did not return any suspicious leads or evidence. The only odd thing the police found in the vicinity was an envelope nailed to a wooden electrical post. In it was a series of symbols that seemed to form a message of some sorts, but police did not pay much heed to it as they believed it was not connected.

Little did they know that two months after, when a mechanic shop went up in flames, another of these envelopes would be waiting nearby, ready to be found. The police still just filed it away as nonsense, however when the office of a member of the Alcassar city council was turned to cinders and another envelope would be found nailed to a post, and the press got wind of it, the Alcassar Municipal Police finally decided to take a closer look. Oh, I forgot to mention, this third blaze added another twist to the tale as the city council member's office still had said council member in it when it burned down.

So, the police handed the notes over to a cryptographer, who swiftly concluded that he had no idea what kind of cypher they contained as it was not using any of the commonly found exemplars. Law enforcement was still puzzled by the code when the heat was once more turned up and a store exploded in a large fireball in the middle of the day, taking seven lives and injuring 24 others. Pressure began to build, not only to catch the arsonist but also to unravel the secret of the notes as it was quite likely they had some connection or information on the crimes.

The police expanded their task force by including the city's top cryptographers and codebreakers to join in, their expertise pitted against the inscrutable puzzles left behind by the arsonist. Yet, despite their best efforts and tireless dedication, the ciphers remained stubbornly resistant to interpretation. Each failed attempt only deepened the sense of frustration and helplessness that pervaded the investigation, especially since the press was egging on the public more and more, chastising the police force over the lack of progress.

Then, they went public. Realizing that they were potentially in a race against time, the authorities decided to publish the notes to seek help from the general public. As the days turned into weeks, fear grew that the codes might forever have remained a mystery when a 14-year-old autistic teenager cracked part of the cypher. He had seen one of the notes on TV and asked his parents to get him the other notes. He was the first to notice certain similarities, details of how he managed to do that were kept confidential by the police however, and his findings had a grim realization dawn upon the authorities: the cyphers held the key to predicting the arsonist's next move. Hidden within the cryptic messages were tantalizing hints and clues, each more elusive than the last.

However, the cypher would subtly change from note to note, so that cracking one did not automatically unravel the rest, but knowing the addresses of the following places, the authorities were able to slowly piece together the puzzle. But before they could decipher the last note up to the point, an explosion rocked the southern part of the city, followed by a fireball and huge black cloud darkening the skies over the port. This time, it was the building of the Port Authority that was the target and it was a devastating blast that cost 24 people their lives with dozens injured. This added a lot of renewed urgency to the quest to crack the code, as the arsonist's targets seemed to escalate in both size and body count.

Progress was made, but it seemed excruciatingly slow, especially not knowing when the next blaze would strike. The army was called into the town in an attempt to guard bigger complexes and installations, but in a sprawling city of over 3 million inhabitants, it was little more than a drop of water on a hot stone amidst Alcassar's rich history. Fear gripped the city and Alcassarans began to avoid larger congregations, such as malls, factories or public landmarks, afraid that being anywhere near these places would put them at a higher risk of falling victim to the escalating cases.

Unfortunately, this fear would be proven true when a series of firebombs were set off at a chemical plant producing, among other things, fertilizer. As you may expect, fire and fertilizer are not the best of friends and the consequences were devastating. A large warehouse exploded, becoming completely pulverized, with the shockwave killing workers and bystanders in a wide radius, debris of the warehouse raining down across the neighbourhood, adding to the victim count. In the end, the death count was 327 people, with the injured numbering in the low thousands. Again, an envelope was found, but this time, it did not contain a cypher, but a very clear and chilling note: "Are you ready for the grand finale?"

With the devastating fire and explosion at the chemical plant, rumours began to spread like the proverbial wildfire as to what would be the grand finale. What would be bigger and even more cataclysmic? Now, we don't know yet, because the last fire, together with this last note only occurred less than one month ago. Alcassar has been placed under a state of emergency and thousands of inhabitants have fled the city. Units of the army, navy, police forces from around the nation and beyond have been summoned to the city in a frantic attempt to protect the city and hopefully prevent the grand finale from happening...
