"Thank you, your majesty," the paramedic muttered quietly as Shu Kian pressed a thousand NSD note into his palm. He bowed with the grace of a jaguar; it was an oft-practiced maneuver that she had observed many times. He smiled faintly, refusing to make eye contact, and then shuffled out of the royal suite hastily. He ever-so-slightly violated a rule of decorum, however, as he stopped at the door and spoke a few more words to her.

"Uh, your majesty, will you be seeing any other company this afternoon?"

"I rather doubt my calendar ought to be simply confessed to you, my friend. Surely you have forgotten your place?" A stern but clever smile crept across her face. He knew better.

"Well, yes, of course. But, eh... your majesty... should you be accepting further guests today, you... well... you might be advised that there's a speck of... something on your cheek."

She reached for the small mirror she kept on her nightstand, but all she found was the television remote for the flat screen against the far wall. Uttering a hushed curse and leaping to her feet, she crossed the room and found the thing on the floor in front of her walk-in closet. She picked it up and held it up to her face.

Her makeup, as always, had been applied flawlessly by her personal assistant. She felt a great sense of pride in the fact that she could walk out onto the street and be envied, not just for her social status but for her beauty. The whitish foundation and subtle blush on her cheek was immaculate, but there, below her eye, she saw what he'd warned her of: a small speck of blood.

"Blast," she cursed again, just as quietly, wiping it away with a cloth. "Thank you for telling me," she said to him. He bowed once again, and left at once.

It wasn't his place to know, but she did have an appointment. In not but ten minutes, the Deputy Prime Minister and Czar of Genomic Management Jiu Ling Sa would be her guest in her private chambers. The cleaning crew had done fast work, happily. He was a beloved friend as well as a fellow elite-level politician in the Celestial Empire, but she only had a half hour or so to speak with him. She adjusted her undergarments, which still felt in disarray under her black and red dress.

A knock on the door startled her. "Your majesty," her personal assistant called out through the shut chamber door, "your guest has arrived a tad early."

"That's quite all right, tell him to come in!"

Sa poked his head into the room, and gave her a big, fatherly smile. His comparatively dark skin was beautiful, and every wrinkle in his face seemed to be the product of unending joy. That this was a former militant leftist who wandered the highlands of Yuezhou fighting against the symbols of state power (like her) was far from Shu Kian's mind. He was much older than her - he was hardly of her generation - but had always encouraged her to find herself and because it was well-known that he was gay, she had always felt completely safe with him.

"Shu Kian!" he cried out. "How are you, my love?"

She threw her arms around him. "Jiu Ling! Hello! It's good to see you!"

"I'm so early, I apologize."

"No, no, it's all right. Please don't apologize. I desperately need to cut things short with you in 40 minutes, anyway."

"Ah, the life of an empress. So many duties of state to attend to, I'm sure. I know my schedule is full."

"Yes... yes. Actually, don't tell anyone, but I don't really have an appointment, there's... well, there's something on television I am hoping to watch."

"Mmmmm," he said, staring dubiously at her large flatscreen on the wall. "Can't say I strongly advise spending too much time watching the grim content that pours out of those boxes. That's the mouthpiece of the capitalist class telling you what to think. Or so I used to say, before we nationalized the media. Now I don't know what exactly it's a mouthpiece of. You and the other Councilors, I suppose."

"Today's grim propaganda is neither grim nor propaganda, Jiu Ling. Well, I suppose it is grim. Some would call it grim, I guess." She bit her lip and shifted in her seat, crossing her legs.

"Oh?" He asked with a laugh, arching his eyebrows. "What's on the tube? Come on, let's hear it."

"I need to watch the caning of Fred Irving."

"Ugh, bloody hell," he sat back in his chair, disgusted. "I forgot that was today. I'm totally against this, for the record. This is all Lai. She insisted that this whole thing be held in a public square in Qiawutian, and televised to boot. During the fucking Copa Rushmori that we are hosting! For the love of all that his holy, why are we doing this? It's barbaric. What will the rest of the region think?"

"So, it's likely to be bloody, then?" Shu Kian's trembling lip stayed between her teeth as she asked the question, varnishing it as best she could with a naïve blush.

"It's a caning, love. It'll be bloody and then some. Unbelievable that the moron voters in this country cheer for such a practice."

"Yes," she said airily as a rush of blood went to her head. "Say," Shu Kian said, eager to change the subject, "how's the NGP going?"

He shook his head again... evidently this topic was no greener a pasture than the caning. "It's... going. The progress that's been made in the last twelve months is genuinely astounding. I'm proud of our achievements. But as the Project picks up steam, and more and more people are hired on to move us into the final phase, and more and more oversight limits my ability to direct the thing... I don't know, Shu Kian. It's feeling discouraging at the moment."

The Naixese Genome Project was a program directed by the Naixese government. Its intent was to map the entirety of the human genome with the use of advanced biomedical technologies and machine learning, with a particular goal of mapping genetic characteristics linked to the "Naixese race." With the Project hurtling forward after success after success, the program's directors had reported to the state that it could begin a regime of limiting and then banning conventional sexual reproduction, as the Project can produce the perfect genetic code for all Naixese babies of the future, growing them in vats. Shu Kian's sister Nai Jian was famously a big supporter of the program.

"Is it my sister?" she asked, saying the quiet part loud.

"You ever pull a punch, honey?" he asked her admiringly.

"No," she answered with a broad grin. "Not that I can think of."

"Well," he said, "good. Look, I'll be honest, Nai Jian is a part of it. She's taken an extremely hands-on role. Her authority is significant. And she doesn't really listen to what any of the scientists have to say. She's an ideologue, through and through. I believe that she sincerely wants the NGP to succeed, but... it's been hard to work with her."

"If I'm honest, I've always felt the thing was a bit weird."

He bristled a bit at that. "Weird?"

"I mean, I understand in principle the idea that we want the state to relieve women of the responsibility to bear children and direct the genetic makeup of all our new fetuses, making sure they have the best genes, and all that. But, who decides what 'the best' gene is? Who decides what the most 'Naixese' genes are? Isn't it all political?"

"Ah," he said, understanding her line of reasoning. "Well, I think the claim is that protecting the Naixese race as a whole is important given our historical exploitation. But, yes, it's true that the Naixese came from many different regions within the Old Land. It is hard to concretely establish what a Naixese gene really is. It can be done, but it's hard. And I wouldn't necessarily say it's political, but... sometimes it's not always agreed upon where the lines are drawn. What's a Naixese gene, and what isn't. That's... an area of contestation, an area without clarity."

"But on the other hand there are clear ways to identify what's simply a good gene and what's not, right? Like, if someone is a carrier for a deadly disease. That's a bad gene, surely. That's what the NGP at least theoretically has the power to stop, right? And there are genes that make people more intelligent! That's a good gene! The NGP could be giving more fetuses those genes! Why bother with this weird racial purity thing?!"

He looked at her very intently. Did he dare trust her with what he knew? "Shu Kian... there are other genetically encoded sequences... that are disliked... by... ah, I shouldn't say too much. Suffice it to say that there are very good genes, genes that could make people live six hundred years... but they're not considered Naixese, and so they're omitted from the NGP's genetic coding algorithm."

Shu Kian's jaw dropped. "Six hundred? Have you spoken to my sister about this?"

"She refuses to meet with me directly. I only communicate with her through the various channels. Her assistants talk to my assistants, et cetera, et cetera."

"Well, I'm sorry to hear that. I wish the NGP would think about the power it really has. The power to do real good." Shu Kian said, glancing at the clock.

"Oh, yes, your television appointment. I'm sorry. Listen, I had no idea you were so interested in the Project. If you wouldn't mind, I would very much like to speak to you more about it, love. I think your ideas are important, and ought to be heard by the top brass over there. Maybe your sister would even listen if she heard it from you."

"I doubt it. The other Councilors don't really listen to me. I don't think they like me. I'm the youngest, and I'm the least... dignified, I suppose."

"Well, think about it. The world can change if we work together and fight for it."

"There's the old radical anarchist in you," she said with a grin.

"Oh, honey," he said with a flamboyant smile, "the old anarchist in me wouldn't have been telling you to go change the world... he would have been planting a bomb under your bed."

She laughed. "I suppose you're right."

"Well," he declared with finality, standing up, "I ought to leave you be. I know you probably have to watch this awful thing because of your role as a state official, but... Shu Kian, promise me you'll turn the broadcast of the caning off if you don't like what you see. It'll be a dreadful sight."

"I appreciate you thinking of me, Jiu Ling," she said.

"Okay. Well, I'll speak to you again, soon," he said, heading for the chamber door.

"All right. Goodbye!"

"See you later, love."

She heard the door close, then pulled her hair out of its tight bun. She too stood, walking over to the door he'd just shut behind him and locking the deadbolt. She quickly stepped back over to her bed, from which she planned to watch the terrible punishment of Mr. Irving. Stopping at her nightstand, she grabbed two objects, one, a remote for the flatscreen, and the other, a small pink vibrator.

News at 2300

«…and we move on to sports, where Dandelion assistant coach Timotej Hansson today emphatically denied rumors that internal turmoil and personal conflicts plague the Union team as they battle down southron way in the 44th Copa Rushmori.

After a shaky start to the tournament - with consecutive losses to Elmyia and Sargossa - and a lackluster follow-up with a draw against Schutzenphalia etc. and a brutal loss to Cabo Azure, speculations about a team out of balance have been rampant. It all culminated earlier today when stories started circulating about two players being involved in a vicious cycle of cruel harassment and outright assault and battery.

With us via video link from Yafei in Naixi, is Timotej Hansson. Good evening, Timotej.»

«Good evening, Sophia.»

«You resolutely denied these rumors when they surfaced earlier today, could you elaborate a bit for our viewers?»

«Yes, of course. I would like to make it perfectly clear that what has been disseminated today are either great exaggerations or just plain falsehoods. It’s true there’s a bit of frustration in the group, but that’s perfectly normal when we’ve, at times, struggled a bit with performing the way we want to perform.»

«But Timotej, we’ve had verified reports today about one your defenders being rushed to a Naixi hospital with four stab wounds?»

«Yes, it’s true that Hibiskus Andersson is currently in hospital, but it’s only due to a very unfortunate incident, where he accidentally fell upon an umbrella and injured his backside.»

«Four times?»

«…»

«Timotej?»

«Sorry, must be the long distance. Yes, no, in actuality he only fell once, but there were several umbrellas. He was in the vicinity of an umbrella rack. It’s uncommonly unlucky, but not unheard of.»

«And I suppose reports of IFK Hagen player Nicomachus Hansson doing the deed, and swiftly being brought back Union side to avoid facing the Naixi police, are also unfounded? Despite verified reports of him landing at Port Kejm International Airport earlier this evening?»

«Yes, I suspect this is a misunderstanding. Nicomachus did indeed leave Naixi today, but that was due to an allergic reaction brought about by a slice of pizza and completely unrelated to the umbrella incident.»

«I see. What kind of reaction?»

«…»

«Timo…»

«The cheese toppings. Yes, he unfortunately seems to have developed acute lactose intolerance over night and had a violent reaction to some Naixi cheese. Very unfortunate, but ultimately a private matter and I don’t think we should speak more of his ailment. I’ve been told he’s recuperating and feeling better.»

«Well, true or not, is it fair to say that stories of harassment and butt shivs have not benefited social cohesion and harmony in the group?»

«Yes, it’s fair to say that these unfounded rumors are burdensome. But we’re all professionals and… So, yeah.»

«How do you and Coach Clentin approach this? What are you doing to restore a sense of balance and unity to a team in crisis?»

«Firstly, I deny any talk of the team being in crisis. Wins against Astograth and Olastor, and yesterday’s convincing three points from Thibaea, puts us in a favorable position going into the two last games. We’ve got a good chance of making the final four.»

«And secondly?»

«What?»

«You said firstly.»

«Well, yeah, we’ve been doing a lot on corners and set pieces. That’s worked pretty well so far, but could definitely have worked even better. So…»

«But I was thinking more on the players well-being and mental health?»

«…»

«Timotej?»

«Yes, yes, I’m here. Yes, that’s also very important, of course, and we’re doing stuff there also. Even though everything’s been pretty great! But it could probably be… even greater. So…»

«Thanks for speaking with us, Timotej. Good luck against Stvoto Latoli.»

«Thank you.»

«And with that we move to the domestic scene, where, in light of the Copa Rushmori induced Allgnejsan hiatus, Division 1 continues to excite people. Surprise Nokkeby team Friska Viljor BK today climbed to the top of the table after a 1-0 away win against IFK Sørtangen…»

The Beaucester Gazette
Plan B Fails as Elmyia Go to the Wire
Late subs undone by Olastor - Old guard required to overhaul Thibaea

For all the hopeful talk about Porras' options off the bench, it was a collection of Elmyia's seasoned pros that have kept the dreams of the knockout stages alive. Elmyia laboured through two supposedly easier assignments, defeated in a late reverse to Olastor, before winless Thibaea left Elmyia staring down the barrel of elimination before an intense second half display rescued the side.

Elmyia had been sitting relatively pretty before these two fixtures, in 4th with 9 points, these two games were viewed as easier wins after credible draws with Cabo Azure and Astograth. Porras opted to shake things up against two teams that would likely to sit deep and try and restrict Elmyia's threat up front.

Facing off against Olastor, the starting eleven was left unchanged from Porras' preferred lineup. This paid substantial dividends. Elmyia spent a good twenty minutes sussing out the deep block that awaited them, a compact 5-4-1 that sat deep and narrow. Benedetti soon found himself crowded out somewhat up against three centre-backs, but his ability to drop back and setup other players came into play. Two goals came within the next ten minutes, both generated by Benedetti moving back into the small amount of space between the two lines. Marakakis and Galli were available for him to spring one-twos. Beaugemont and Froggatt both made continued runs into the areas either side of the outside centre-backs. Both goals were identical, Benedetti sending through balls that they took in stride from these position charging into the box. Both then powered the ball into the net. The rest of the half was spent knocking the ball about without much urgency, Elmyia looked like they'd settled matters.

Half time subs came. Froggatt, Galli and Beresford rested, it was Gabbiadini, Marinos and Kastrinakis on to prove themselves in the second half. This was quickly made to appear hubristic. Olastor came storming out of the blocks, two goals came in the 49th and 51st minutes. So dominant in possession for the first half, Elmyia's distribution appeared to struggle as all three substitutes adjusted to the pace of the game. Marinos looked particularly suspect, both failing to track quickly and cover his man for the goal and coughing up the ball cheaply on multiple occasions. The rest of the half would see Elmyia struggle to find their way back into the contest. A decent spell was established between the 60th and 75th minute, and a goal did eventually come out of it. Benedetti again showed his worth, buying a penalty cheaply and cooly converting to put them back in the lead.

Yet the advantage couldn't be maintained. A break from a corner in the 83rd minute saw defensive cover evaporate, with Kastrinakis struggling to defend 1 on 1. An additional goal came as a long throw-in wasn't dealt with, the back 4 seemingly confused as to their respective responsibilities.

Despite the portends against Olastor, Porras seemed determined to give his alternatives a run out. McLoughlin came into the line up against Thibaea. Katsouranis gave Froggatt a break on the wing, whilst Whittingham and Gabbiadini came in upfront. Benedetti also slotted into the attacking midfield slot, whilst Marakakis was moved back to take on Galli's role.

Fielding such an attacking midfield made sense against a side who had scored only 4 times in 7 matches. Elmyia were to allow them to pad that total out, however. Benedetti's pushing forward to form an effective front two left Marakakis with a lot of space to screen in midfield. When Elmyia lost the ball and went into their 4-2-4 out of possession shape it instantly caused problems. Left floundering, Marakakis soon found herself on a yellow as she hauled a player down to prevent the break. The team sought to adjust onfield, Beresford started to tuck in to the right of midfield to offer a little more screening presence. This left a gap down the right, and a couple of clever one-twos saw Elmyia 1 goal down just 10 minutes in. A long ball and a soft foul from Grosso later they were two down as Thibaea converted the resultant penalty.

Just 20 minutes in and Elmyia looked to be in trouble. Their opponents again retreated deep, but Beaugemont and Gabbiadini struggled on the wings. Both like to go inside, where there was no space, and Gabbiadini's speciality is running in behind. If there's no behind to run into, this becomes difficult. Albrook and Beresford became the sole real attacking outlets, whilst Whittingham and Benedetti chased a series of crosses. One did eventually come off, the knock down powered home by Marakakis, but at half-time Elmyia looked serious bereft of confidence and ideas.

Porras was forced to send in the cavalry. Galli on for Marakakis, Froggatt for Gabbiadini, Rossi for Beaugemont and Simmons for McLoughlin. From the panic of the first half, calm was soon established as Froggatt tore into the backline like soft bread. Bagging a hattrick for herself, she was gracious enough to lay one on for Whittingham to head home. Crisis averted, but the drop-off from the first eleven has started to look steep.

Going into their final game Elmyia face a winner takes it all matchup with Stvoto Latoli. Whilst unranked, they're a side that have turned heads so far, with wins over Astograth and Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland now on their CV. They field a 4-2-4 formation and seem generally to prefer playing on the counter-attack. Elmyia have the tools to unlock a system like this, they're able to outnumber them in midfield and the front three all have the capability to pick the gaps between the back 4. Froggatt will again be key, likely to try and drift between right-back Doy and centre-back Geilolatooto. If Benedetti, Marakakis et al are able to find her in these areas then Elmyia could book their passage through to the round of 16.

Avdo Mujdza was furious.

Okay, furious might have been an overstatement, but he was very annoyed. And the whole office could tell, as he flung the double doors open and slammed his fist on his desk in frustation. He'd worked so hard on this project, dedicating the last ten months or so of his life traversing the country watching as many youth games as possible, just to have some part-timer from Castlemilk undo all that work with just a few clicks of a button?

The project in question was one assigned to him by none other than Glenn Tamnavulin. Glenn and the GFA had named Avdo "lead youth development scout", given him full responsibility for the scouting matters of the country's youth sides. Not that they'd be competeting in anything significant - no Di Bradini entry, no U18 World Cup entry - but Avdo didn't mind. He felt honoured and appreciated the recognition for his talent-spotting. He lived and breathed football and whilst it could be a thankless task sometimes, moments like this made it all worth it and proved he was doing something worthwile in his chosen career.

You see, Avdo was as patriotic as they come. Never in a nasty or discriminatory way, but a bit too hardline for some people perhaps. He was a firm believer in supporting your hometown club after your country and all that jazz. But what he really believed in was that if you want to actually represent your country, you should do it because you want to, not because you're not good enough for whoever else you're eligible for. Now, to some that'd be a reasonable request. Some wouldn't care, if you're good enough then you're good enough, who cares what other countries think? Most thought it wasn't anything to make a fuss over. Which it wasn't. So when Avdo's reports from his subordinates began to come through, he hit the roof when he saw one from a one Johannes Aerstad compiling a list of eligible dual-nationals based in Semarland.

This is where Avdo's bias seeped in. Coming from Drumgelloch, where the largest Bosnjak population was, there was always a friendly but never serious rivalry with those of Semar origin who were all mainly in Castlemilk and the surrounding towns. Johannes was very proud of his Semar heritage, and to some (Avdo), they might think he was actually an SFA spy, planted into the GFA by Kwame Nelson himself.

Although Kwame Nelson had spent a lot of time trying to help the GFA and lent manpower and resources to a country they owed nothing to.

Johannes was assigned to his local areas of course, so why was he sending Avdo this email about players based abroad? That wasn't within the budget and Avdo didn't want to have to explain to his GFA superiors why they'd gone over. Avdo certainly hadn't authorised any expenses for international scouting, and he hastily checked the logs to see if anyone had spent any money on plane tickets or fancy high-rise hotels in the middle of Jansberg. To his shock, they hadn't.

"Good morning!" greated Johannes cheerily.

Avdo just glared and beckoned him to come into his office.

"Everything ok, boss?" asked Johannes.

Avdo perused the file in front of him.

"Where did you get this information?" he said as his eyes skimmed the page. "I didn't even send you to Semarland. If you went of your own accord, I can't compensate you, you know..."

"Please, don't worry!" chuckled Johannes. "I've got a friend in the SFA-"

Before he could finish, Avdo hurled the fake plant on his desk across the room.

"I couldn't care less if you were best mates with Kwame Nelson himself!" he boomed. "I've just spent the past year sitting in the torrential rain watching North Drumgelloch's U18s get tossed about every game, and Drumry Athletic's youth sides struggle to score even a simple tap in, painstakingly compiling a report on nearly every player in the youth systems in this country just to have it undone by your pal in the SFA?"

"What do you mean?" queried Johannes, a puzzled look on his face. "Just because they're eligible doesn't mean they're gonna be called up, it's not our decision. Besides, I thought you'd be happy? You want what's best for the country right?"

Avdo was almost purple with rage. "What I want, Mr. Aerstad, is for this country to actually pay mind to it's own youth system, rather than Semarland. We know those crazy bastards throw millions of pounds at developing the best facilities for toddlers to play 11-a-side in the shadow of the Natunolstadion, or whatever it is they do in such over-the-top fashion. The second the GFA think of a way to cut costs and let someone else do the labour, we'll be left with nothing. It'll go to the dogs and we'll never see the Copa Rushmori again. Or the World Cup."

Johannes shrugged. "I think you're overreacting, mate. Why shouldn't they get a chance because they're playing abroad? If they want to declare for us, let them. The stronger the better. Besides, what's stopping them from playing here anyway? They're not tied to those clubs for life, especially now the international market is open. I think it'll make our development system stronger anyway."

"Oh you would say that, wouldn't you?" countered Avdo, frothing at the mouth. "You might as well go and work for Semarland. Round up our best players playing here that are eligible for them and see how you like it when they turn out for Semarland? Oh you would though wouldn't you?"

Johannes just shook his head. Was this guy on drugs? That's the exact same thing as what we're doing, he thought.

"Right, I'll be off then if that's all." he sighed. "Just give me a call if you need anything else, Avdo."

His boss just muttered under his breath as he printed the document.

To be fair, it wasn't a huge amount of players, but Avdo's need for approval from his bosses was creeping into his judgment. He wanted a good chunk of the players called up to be the ones he'd actually spent time scouting, not just some names on a list that were apparently good because they were of Semar origin as well as Glazgotian and played in Semarland or whatever the combination was. He glanced over the printed sheet at the names.

David AXELSSON, DC, Eikborg Club U18 | Click link to see highlights...
D'Sean McINTOSH, DC, FC Kolberg U18 | Click link to see highlights...
Zoquon BENTON, DMC, Sporting Matrolvik U18 | Click link to see highlights...

Femi WRIGHT, ST, Sporting Solsholm U18 | Click link to see highlights...

Nine names couldn't hurt, surely?

Avdo sighed. Maybe he had overreacted. He realised he had when he watched the clips of the players in question and saw they were actually half-decent. Maybe they wouldn't earn callups for the Semar youth sides, even Avdo had to admit Semarland had the better of them when it came to youth development. But there was no reason why they couldn't take advantage. He made a mental note to send invites to the players' respective clubs inviting them to a training camp for the Glazgo youth sides, and send a request to budgeting to cover the travel and accomodation costs. Maybe none would get picked, but it was worth a shot. Surely they couldn't be any worse than some of the shower he'd seen over the year.

Then Avdo thought back to Johannes' comments. Maybe the GFA should look at improving the country's youth systems if they wanted to get ahead?

Then he remembered the result last night. Glazgo sealing victory over Southwest Eastnorth to move up to third place? Not long after managing to get the better of Pasarga of all countries? Qualification to the octofinals was within arms reach, and despite the squad being quite older with a significant lack of young players, they were doing much better than expected. Glenn Tamnavulin wanted a long term project. Avdo knew as well, it was a long term plan to rebuild the country's sporting infastructure. Maybe it started with opening the net a bit. Were the Semar-eligible players a short-term solution, or a long term one? He couldn't honestly tell.

Avdo backtracked into his emails, clicking on the one sent by Johannes, and pressed "forward".

On most days, Nai Jian's assistants had to walk so far to find her that they didn't bother. It was just as well... for the sake of operational security, it would probably not do to have a bunch of functionaries wandering around the NGP's main vat bank and data hub centers. If they did need to find her, though, the journey began at the veranda of the only four-star hotel in the little town of Fuzaidai. One would need to step down onto the chalky stone of the path through the rear of the hotel's grounds, then down a path through a small glen of pine trees on the edge of town, then over a little concrete-reinforced bridge, past a checkpoint run by the Concilors' Guard, then up a little wooded hillside to a long corrugated metal shed. In the shed, there was a laser-guided facial-recognition device that unlocked a very large bulkhead on the floor. When open, the hulking steel bulkhead rose all the way to the rusty ceiling of the shed. Down the sides of the round-shaped well, a circular staircase descended. As one neared the bottom, the greenish-white ambient light of the dappled forest sunlight - which poured through the frosted glass panes of the shed - gave way to a heavenly glowing blue.

There, at the bottom of the steps, was one of four second-story control rooms for the enormous data hub that was required to run the computations for the Naixese Genome Project's genetic mapping algorithm. One could look down at the main floor in awe, watching each tower blink with flickering blue light. Here, the mapped sequence of a woman who scrubbed dung off of a Golden Person's military uniform, there, the mapped sequence of a man who died dragging railroad ties across the endless prairie for pennies a day. Along each of the hubs long concrete walls ran enormous air conditioning units. Nai Jian liked to imagine that the often-chilly air of the Naixese high plain was being funneled directly onto the servers, as though the very air of her homeland was nourishing and aiding in the survival of her race. (In truth, the air wouldn't be cold enough, such was the heat generated by these awesome machines.)

But as wondrous as it was, the data hub wasn't where one would find Nai Jian. Instead, she opted to do her work even further down. From the control room, it was a hundred paces along the walkway above Cooling Unit 4 that would lead to an elevator down into the the vat bank... the true beating heart of this whole thing. In the skies above, jets were ferrying national football teams from all across Rushmore all over Naixi, but instead, deep underground, below Fuzaidai, hidden in plain sight just a couple miles from the border with the Golden People, Nai Jian would emerge from the pale blue doors of Elevator IV and gaze out at the endless shelves, dozens of stories high, upon which the future children of the Celestial Empire were growing in vats full of fluid and tiny, tiny babies.

Nai Jian had arrived at 5:15 that morning, as usual, and had taken the handy shuttle (on rails... she often smiled at the irony) along the main corridor and alighted at Depot 1, which was down at the very bottom of the vault. If you looked up from Depot 1, all you saw was endless towers, glowing an astounding aqua blue, rising endlessly up into the blackness. But Nai Jian knew it wasn't enough to gaze at the beauty of it. For the beauty to be actualized, for it to mean anything to the Naixese race, someone needed to take the work of pushing the project forward seriously. So from Depot 1, another shuttle ran a perpendicular route toward the west wall. There was an office area there, just nestled at the base of the first row. That was where she preferred to do her work.

Today, she'd faced an infuriating delay as the second - connecting - shuttle had been unable to leave from Depot 1. An enormous piece of computing equipment had been left too edge to the shuttle track, and for it to be used, someone needed to bring a forklift down from ground level. Agitated, she'd demanded that the foreman expedite the process, but he of course had told her with a blank-faced expression "sorry, Councilor, the elevators only run so fast." It had been all it took for her not to snap back "elevators run as fast as you want them to, peasant," but she'd elected to keep quiet and wait.

She watched as the forklift crew at last drifted into the Depot 1 station on the first shuttle. They were moving blissfully quickly, Nai Jian noticed with gratitude, but that only distracted her. If she'd been paying attention, she would have noticed that she didn't recognize any of the men on the shuttle. With them they carried an enormous black box, roughly the shape of a coffin, that was coated on its flat front side by polyurethane acoustic foam. The forklift could have driven from the shuttle floor onto the stone platform, but several men, working fast, were needed to wedge dollies underneath the thing and wheel it painstakingly onto the platform.

"Did you watch the caning of Irving yesterday, foreman?" Nai Jian asked the foreman, trying to be polite in spite of the fact that she was still plotting the imprisonment of the yellow hard-hat-wearing oaf just seconds ago.

"No, your Majesty, I was at work. Did I miss anything good?"

"I'm afraid not. He behaved like a man accustomed to torture during the whole thing. He just stood there taking lash after lash, and then as soon as the disappointed crowd quieted down enough for him to be heard, he started shouting again that he wasn't Fred Irving, that he was David Irving, the assassin's brother. It was pretty shameful, if I'm honest."

"You think there's any truth to it, your Majesty?"

"Truth to what?"

"You think it's true that this guy is a patsy?"

"Of course not. He's guilty as charged. A truly foul man."

"Of course, your Majesty."

"What on earth is taking the forklift so long? Do they need to do anything more than-"

But she cut herself off. There on the platform behind her she saw the enormous coffin-like black box. The men who had placed it there were back on the shuttle, frantically shoving earplugs into their ears and throwing the shuttle in reverse. The awful thing they'd left there simply sat like there like a slug... a hippopotamus-sized slug. Nai Jian exchanged a worried glance with the foreman.

"What is that, your Majesty? It looks like a massive speaker."

Barely were the words out than a massive thud issued from the thing. All Nai Jian heard was a deep, resonant blast of sound, and then slowly the high-pitched ring of tinnitus rose in her ears. The thunderous sound sent her stumbling backwards and she felt her back knock into the metal exterior of the stranded second shuttle. Then, seconds after she began to pick herself back up, another massive thump, this one even louder than before. She barely heard it, though, as her eardrums were already pierced from the first. She felt her whole body thrown backward again. Finally, one last blast of sound, and she was unconscious.

Nai Jian and the other workers were all knocked cold. But if they had been conscious, they would have seen a sudden rain, nay, endless cascade of shattered vats and bluish fluid descending from the impossibly high ceiling all the way to the floor. The future of the Naixese race, all lined up neatly on shelves, descended upon the sleeping victims in a tsunami of viscous goop and broken glass. All of them perished.

MYTANIJA QUALIFY, BUT WE HAVEN’T LEARNED MUCH

In Rushmori football, qualifying for the knockout stages of a Copa is regarded as almost a birthright for a number of stronger footballing nations. Mytanija considers itself to be one of them and supporters would quickly turn on any manager that failed to at least reach that stage of the competition in any given tournament. The group phase is often regarded as a mixed bag of opportunities and challenges, a melting pot of some of the best teams in the multiverse, regionally strong opponents and relative minnows. It is international football in its purest form, with regional rivalries taking centre stage and everybody trying to thieve the bragging rights for a couple of years until the next tournament rolls around.

Mytanija have made it out of the group this time, again, but the dichotomy between beatable teams and more imposing adversaries was clearly exemplified too and in some ways leaves us with just as many questions as answers regarding the direction of Misel Ravnjak’s tenure. Qualifying with a game to spare is creditable, but it’s also more or less what everybody would have expected and there’s not really any clear lessons to be had regarding Ravnjak’s tactical prowess on the global stage. It was a smooth enough journey, with a series of wins over the teams Mytanija should be beating. However, a closer examination reveals a narrative which goes beyond the scoresheet, highlighting the nuances of football at the highest level.

Ravnjak’s approach was put to the test against opponents with a wide range of talent and tactical acumen. Heading into the final game the Hoops have six wins and two defeats. The six wins have come against The Kytler Peninsulae, Darmen, Eastfield Lodge, Naixi, Ketiou and Republic Guanacasteca. Even the most pessimistic Mytanar would probably admit that we have a squad capable of beating these nations when the team is performing. Darmen and hosts Naixi offer tricky opposition, sure, but the matches which the Hoops lost are perhaps the most instructive. Nephara are the best team in the group and dealt Mytanija a cruel blow with a comfortable and confident 2-0 defeat. San Isidro Labrador might not be the most internationally renowned opponent but have competed well in Rushmore for a number of years and it would have been a match earmarked as potentially difficult coming into the tournament.

These encounters more or less told us what we already knew about Misel Ravnjak’s Mytanija. When the team is playing well the system roars like the engine of a high-performance sports car. Denis Ovsyannikov, the maestro of the Mytanar midfield, helps to orchestrate proceedings and creates opportunities too with his characteristic finesse. Meanwhile up top Drazen Skara usually only requires one opportunity to hit the back of the net and he’s scored a couple, albeit supported by other strikers with goals from Stipe Mlinarevic and Rafko Jelenc assisting the cause along the way. However, those defeats are symptoms we’ve seen before, of Mytanija not having enough against the best team in the group and stumbling in a tricky but winnable match.

It is difficult to put a finger on the root cause of the defeat against Nephara. Mytanija were rather insipid, the performance was almost damp around the edges, never truly threatening to catch light in the way it needed to. Nephara were just better. They were more clinical. They took their chances and stopped two of the best players in the multiverse from taking theirs in Skara and Ovsyannikov. The problem for Ravnjak is that the acid test lies not in beating Ketiou and Republica Guanacasteca, but in finding a way for Mytanija to beat the countries which have traditionally caused us problems. At the World Cup proper he was unable to do that and it appears, unless the Nephara loss was a one-off, that we could see a repeat here at the Copa Rushmori.

After all, it is in the encounters with quality opposition that the true mettle of any team is often revealed. Mytanija’s group stage served us brief glimpses of what the knockout rounds might look like. San Isidro Labrador, a team which has proven its worth in recent tournaments, decided to almost out-Ravnjak Misel Ravnjak by drawing Mytanija onto their well-organised defensive setup and breaking at speed. This caused problems for the Mytanar defence and San Isidro Labrador came away with a well deserved 1-0 win. Ravnjak’s substitutions made a difference, demonstrating an adaptability and degree of tactical acumen which will be important if we are to succeed, but they couldn’t quite create the goal which would ensure the Hoops came away with something rather than zero.

There’s still one group game left, versus Rea San Vegas, and a win against them could allow Mytanija to move up the seeding list for the knockout rounds. Ravnjak is likely to ring the changes once again, allowing the generally accepted starting eleven some rest prior to the carnage of the knockout stages. Mytanija will need Nephara and Naixi to drop points to do that, but stranger things have happened. For now, the spot in the next round is secure and it’s clear that the real challenges lie ahead. Mytanija beat the teams they should be beating and then got a couple of disappointing results against the sort of teams which have been known to cause the Hoops problems in the past. Ravnjak needs to show he can avoid those defeats in the knockout rounds, or the knives may be sharpened at the FSM.

From a tactical perspective he could probably be as proactive as he was in defeat against San Isidro Labrador more often. The changes in personnel and shape (to something of a 3-4-3 with a box midfield), changed the game, giving Mytanija control in the midfield and overloads in the final third and in the end could consider themselves unlucky not to come away with something more than the 1-0 defeat they were eventually on the end of. Mytanija will play knockout football, but we’re none the wiser about the progress Ravnjak might well have made until we get there, where the margin for error is razor-thin. Tactical acumen, adaptability, and the ability to perform under immense pressure become paramount. It is here that Ravnjak will be truly evaluated as a manager. Can he devise tactics that outwit the likes of Graentfjall, Nephara or Cassadaigua? Can he inspire his team to rise to the occasion when facing footballing giants?

The lessons from the lengthy group stage which has felt similar to a World Cup qualification campaign are valuable, but they must be seen as a prelude to the main act. The beatable teams provided a canvas for Ravnjak to sketch out his tactical masterpiece, but the true challenge lies in the masterpiece’s reception when put up against the fiercest opposition.

Good morning, afternoon, evening or night, where- and whenever you are reading this. Welcome back to the final part of our review of the TPL's transfer window activities. We have compiled our ratings into a neat tier list for your perusal:

Image

Now, as we had mentioned before, the ratings don't reflect the actual quality of the roster, in some cases, the strength of the roster is likely one of the reasons why the club didn't do much in terms of transfers. Anyways, that's it from us here at transfermarket.tkt, back to our friends at TSG!

Image

The Copa Rushmori is seeing its group stage coming to an end tonight with Tikariot's game against Valladares in Bijiben, which will only be the second time playing them after a 2-0 win at the Copa Rushmori 38. But let's have a look at the journey so far as the game will technically not make a difference to the outcome of the group, at least not for us. OK, that's not quite true as it can still affect who we will be playing in the octofinals, but at the very least we are through to the knockouts.

Things started out nicely, with a 2-1 over returning Glazgo in our first ever meeting with them, after which one the first of the heavy hitters came our way with our eastern neighbours from Nyowani Kitara. After losing our first encounter with them during the group stages of World Cup 93, the Snowy Owls entered the fray with a lot of enthusiasm and managed to snag a point in a 2-2 that coach McAllister called "a well-earned draw".

Next up another premiere, with the southerners of the Gatchingerrak Union and we barely managed to squeak out a narrow 1-0 win, but a win's a win, especially important as the next in line was Pasarga, who we seem to be running into left, right and even centre. Our sixth game against them interestingly enough was our first in a Copa Rushmori, after three World Cup propers and one qualifying campaign and going with our track record so far, it was pretty much impossible we were going to win, as so far we've gone W-D-W-L-W and a draw it was 1-1, but another important point.

Southwest Eastnorth (we're still surprised they found Naixi in the first place) came next and after losing our only previous encounter at Copa Rushmori 37, the Snowy Owls took revenge in a quite attractive 4-2 win, before facing yet another newcomer to our history, Isle Noire. This mysterious island put up quote the fight and we barely eked out a 4-3 win, but in the end nobody is going to ask how we got the three points.

A lot of people were very excited, and a little worried, about our first-ever match against the returnees of the Polar Islandstates, even more so after Tikariot City FC managed to sign Einar Heimark and Aapo Miroshnichenko to pre-contracts for the season after this one, and in a tight game, we snatched away another three-pointer with a 2-1, which secured us second spot in the Copa.

And then, yes, then the inevitable derby with our rival to the north: Græntfjall. With only one win in the previous seven meetings, hopes were fairly low and with the Snow Wolves still soaring high (yes, we know, flying wolves is a bit of a stretch to the imagination, but just work with us), a point would have been a success and that's exactly what we got. WIth a very rare occurrence, a goalless draw.

So, now, before the final match of the group stage, we sit at a solid five wins and three draws, still unbeaten, and a very unusual second-best defensive record in the group.

Without even trying to, Alexsandr van Sorensen had accelerated back into public life with a speed that he’d found distinctly disorientating. Most men his age were settling into a daily routine of daytime television, yelling at clouds, and fitting a punishing medication routine around their equally punishing napping schedule.

But not Alexsandr.

It had been so long since he’d lived life in the public eye that many had forgotten entirely that he’d been forced to withdraw for political reasons. It would seem that time really is the best healer, and when you consider the exploits of your country’s best ever footballer, his political activism didn’t really have a chance at competing against your memory of his performances in the World Cup finals, and so the majority of the general public had simply thought he’d turned into a recluse. As it was, it was speaking out against the rise of The Party and Orion Lund that had led to the OO ‘encouraging’ him to stay quiet and keep his thoughts to himself. When you had a folk hero that transcended sport, it would seem not even The Party would risk taking you on in the daylight. Far easier to push you to the dark and shadowy corners in which so much of their politics took place.

And so, he was cajoled into a period of isolation to match that of his country. Successfully, maybe. But not without protest. Not without dissent. Not without trying to work out how to do something about it.

It had been frustrating of course, but with an OO car at either end of his road at all times, what options did he have? The message had been clear: “Don’t even think about it.” But he had been. And that was the problem. He’d met Sebastian Jung, a similarly frustrated individual who worked in the Tele-Embassies, and they’d taken to texting each other their ideas or thoughts about what could be done. With Alexsandr under effective house arrest, it was left to Sebastian to do much of the leg work, but despite as much encouragement as he could muster, Alexsandr simply couldn’t persuade Sebastian to be quite the activist he’d wanted him to be. Even with the chance to meet the biggest stirrer of the pot since the borders were opened, nothing was happening. There was a growing sense in Alexsandr’s mind that they were simply two men, shouting into the void and pointlessly trying to swim against the current.

So, it was time to stir the pot himself, and after what had felt like a lifetime, Alexsandr called the bluff of the OO agents watching him, and simply... left.

What had happened since then was a scream of publicity, a constantly orbiting cloud of journalists, and a seemingly endless list of demands from all sides... Jan Mayen Islanders wanted him to come back in and work on an advisory basis, Sebastian wanted him to slink back into the shadows and keep a low profile for a bit, and from the parade of Party politicians who kept appearing on television to talk down his achievements, he guessed The Party were pretty keen for him to disappear again. That much at least was fun, in a way. It reminded Alexsandr of his time on the pitch, creating opportunities and being a thorn in the side of the opposition. It had felt good to be doing that again. As an individual with synaesthesia, he was more in tune with his emotional memories than most, and even thinking about creating opportunities like that again was enough for him to taste the sour cherries that had marked his playing career.

But even so, he had had to be careful. He'd taken to texting Sebastian once a day as an absolute maximum, just in case, he never stayed in one town for more than a couple of weeks, living out of his suitcase, and he was being exceptionally careful about which interviews to accept and which to turn down. The sports agency that used to represent him had been good enough to equip him with a pair of secretaries who took it in turns to look after his diary. It wasn't their job to push him in one direction or the other of course, or even to comment on it, but Alexsandr could sense their growing incredulity that he kept turning down the long-form interviews at respected outlets, and kept taking the rapid fire puff pieces. Truth was, some of those long-form journalists were good enough to want to talk about his politics, but weren't good enough to know why they shouldn't.

The lowest common denominator stuff though, the smaller outlets loved that kind of questioning, and so Alexander stuck resolutely to where he wouldn't be asked about politics.

Which is why it was strange he'd managed to get in and out of a television appearance talking about the East Külmsaar National Team without danger. He'd even managed to make a suggestion to the Islanders of a young striker he'd seen there, and still nobody had asked him anything about the Secretary General. Not even in the place of their 'origin story'. Not even after his speech the other week.

Now, waiting for his flight back up birth, Alexsandr looked at the back pages, and realised they were same as the front. Apparently, the Secretary General's wasn't important enough to displace the transfer saga of Odbjorn Ohm. He'd turned down a couple of clubs according to the headlines, and Royal Rumiatzi of all places were planning a bid of their own. Alexsandr smiled at that at least. There was a familiar name. Time was in his day that the other players didn't really consider you a real Terns until you'd achieved one of three things: a goal, a hit piece from a tabloid after a bad performance, or a transfer offer from Royal Rumiatzi. Some did move over there, of course, but never as many as bids were made, and Alexsandr could hardly see The Party staying out of that decision.

Realising grimly that things hadn't changed at all, Alexsandr folded his paper and put it down to look out through the huge glass windows out onto the runway tarmac.

What was he going to do now?

All of a sudden he felt every single one of his advanced years. He was way out of his depth, and so was Sebastian. This wasn't sour cherry: this was rotting honey, with an accompanying tinge of pale green. Lund was definitely lining up to announce himself as a dictator of sorts, and Alexsandr was angry with himself for allowing himself to get carried away with the possibility that just reappearing would have been enough to through Lund off. No such luck. It was business as usual.

Alexsandr couldn't do all this by himself. He needed help. He needed a team. A team with a very particular set of skills.

But, where was he going to get one? And how was he going to reach out once he'd identified them? And what skills was he even looking for anyway?

Perhaps, after all, this was something to ask Sebastian about in his next text. Or perhaps it would have to wait until he was back from his pressing engagements providing analysis on the Di Bradini Cup. Not a retreat, or an abandonment, but a tactical pause in proceedings. He didn't like it, but he'd have to go along with it.

Smiling and politely posing for a couple of photographs with some fans that had spotted him, Alexsandr's mind was nonetheless elsewhere as he tried to work out what to do next.

Outside, a single goose flew overhead.

EURA WALLOP ASKARIS TO ADVANCE
Dagan defeat leaves Eura needing results elsewhere to top Group 4

Glen Merson has praised the “tenacity” and “pluck” of his players after they recovered from a painful defeat to Cassadaigua, thrashing The Askari Union 7-1 to secure advancement to the first knockout round of the Copa Rushmori.

Eura’s recent fixtures against the Dagans have been hard fought and tinged with off the field tension. Eura came out on top 1-0 at the 85th Cup of Harmony, and before that the team in pink triumphed by the same scoreline in the World Cup 92 group stages. It was maybe not the most surprising result then this time around – a cleaner tie than previous encounters, absent of much goalmouth activity, punctuated only by a clinical Allyson Perry finish. Another 1-0, but this time going against Merson’s Falcons. What was disappointing though was that Eura had enjoyed the better of the play, recording eight shots to the Dagans three and holding 59% of the possession, but had failed to convert that performance into victory.

The result added a pinch of doubt to Eura’s prospects of progress which until now had been uninterrupted. Five wins and a solitary draw were now joined by a regrettable defeat, a glimpse through the armour that might offer hope to some of the talented chasing teams. Step forward The Askari Union to save the day. la Delfenoj still bear the marks of so-called ‘Skorjiball’, which would prove a hit and miss as a philosophy in Euran colours, playing an aggressive and direct attacking style with a flair of the mischief and shithousery to even the odds against teams with superior talents.

At one point the Askari’s boasted several Eura-based and even Euran-born players (including the now Euran Oceanian Garrett Ramsey, Oslograd’s prodigal son). However, the numbers have dwindled in the current ranks to just one, the veteran Suttonville striker Renate Eskalza being one of the few remaining members of a “golden generation” of Askari football. Expectations are really rather low for the Askari after a disastrous financial collapse in the domestic game that has undercut the national team. Some pundits even speculated they’d be lucky to get a single point in the lengthy group stage; at least by this point they had overcome that expectation by winning one game. Sadly, for them, they’d lost the other six.

On paper it was exactly the kind of fixture Eura needed in order to keep in touching distance of the Dagans and ensure there would be no upset. But there can be no complacency in the Copa, or at all in international football really – Eura have suffered enough upsets in recent years to know that well. Glen Merson fielded most of his first choice XI. He would take no chances. Thankfully, he need not have done so. The Askari put up a brave effort for almost ten minutes. Olympe Riva actually forced a rather good save out of John Hewitt. But then the latest in a recent trend of early Euran goals would arrive, via Sophie Singh’s left boot from close range in the 9th minute.

Askari discipline fell apart and the first half quickly turned into a rout. Owen James and Trent Roberts ran riot on the flanks, leaving Iohana Mercado and Charlotte Aquilina flat on their behind’s, unable to keep up with the twisting and turning and bursts of pace. Roberts’ masterfully orchestrated 22nd minute overlap put Molly Taylor through for a one-on-one against Gianluca Combeferre, which she cheekily slipped between his legs as he rushed her. 2-0 soon became 3-0; James turned creator this time with a classic move, creating some space on the right after a patient buildup that pulled the defence apart, and using it to whip in a cross for the unmarked Singh to rifle in.

By the time Oscar Vincent stepped up to take his 40th minute penalty, the game seemed over, and his decisive finish made sure of it. But the Eurans did not let up against the demoralised Askari, who had given away a quarter of their 16 goals conceded in the tournament over a single half of football. James earned his place on the scoresheet soon after half time, wrapping up a sublime move of short passes that had culminated in Vincent sidestepping Guy-Fiore Riverina at the edge of the box, a real showboating moment, before setting up James for the finish. At this point the Askari coach Jehanne Scaletta (also known as a coaching team member for a Nepharan second tier club) rang the changes to stem the bleeding.

Embarrassingly for goalkeeper Combeferre, Scaletta substituted him for the 18-year-old Selune Couronne, one of four substitutions. Her changes had such a positive impact that even she seemed surprised. la Delfenoj regained their composure and strung together some passes. Couronne looked supremely confident for such a young player brought on as a substitute keeper and pulled off a fantastic save against Alex Sharp within a minute of coming on. In a moment of textbook route one to make Skorji Oslograd proud, Camoa Villanelle lumped a long ball towards the box where Eskalza was waiting, before the Suttonville veteran bullied Jack Bedford off the dropping ball, spun around on the spot and thundered it low and hard beneath a stunned Hewitt.

Their clean sheet dirtied, Eura sought to reassert themselves and resume the beating. Hewitt soon had his poetic revenge. A long goal kick from the Farrenton man looked set to be met by the head of either substitute centreback Corrado Gavroche or left back Riga Carcassone. There was some kind of miscommunication and both hesitated. 33-year-old Gavroche made a late decision to rise for the ball, his aging leg muscles straining to leap him into the air…but he missed. Chromatika-based Carcassone fumed at her older teammate as she watched the much faster Owen Holden nip in behind and slip the ball past Couronne. As ever for teams like the Askari, the difference between the overseas-based pros and their lower level domestic teammates was being ruthlessly exposed.

There was almost a further consolation for them as teenage substitute Valletta Como wasted an open chance from just 8 yards, after Alessander Digne had made so much effort to get the ball in the right place at the right time. That was the last Askari chance of note. The Eurans would have a few more, one of which would mark goal number seven, Roberts deservedly getting himself on the scoresheet. It was a bit of a fluke – an overhit cross that caught out the otherwise excellent Couronne at the far post – but they all count. Victory leaves Eura with an unlikely chance of topping the group on the final matchday, if Cassdaigua lose and Eura win while overturning several goals worth of goal difference. But with their confidence renewed and one eye on the next round, it is likely that the final opponent, Zenic, will face a more experimental lineup.

Just in case it needs to be said, Nepharan sentiment about the nation of Naixi and its suitability as a host is purely IC.

Siege mentality. That was the buzzword going around. For the consensus was that for a Nephar running around Naixi very much constituted going behind enemy lines. There had been talk in the past of Banija being Nephara's peer opposite, its personal Amnarei-asud, but this was far closer to home.
It was not as though culture shock was particularly unusual for Nepharim, but it tended to manifest in raised eyebrows, not prison sentences. No alcohol? That ruled out about half of Nepharan culture. Denial of service to queer people? Well, most Nepharim didn't consider themselves queer, mostly because casual or at least situational bisexuality was the cultural norm. Body modification? Every player in the squad had at least two tattoos; it was a rite of passage at 16. Pretty much the only thing that wasn't outlawed in Naixi, it seemed, was recreational marijuana. Which was outlawed - though barely enforced - in Nephara, an arrangement that suited most people as effectively an official encouragement for stoners to talk about anything other than the fact they were stoners.
But fortunately, they did not need to act out of place to be perceived as out of place, because their appearance did that (even with the piercings taken out and tattoos covered up) just on sight. With two exceptions.
"And that only lasts until we open our fucking mouths," said Catheline Fang gloomily. It was her first experience of a true international tournament, and in truth, she had been looking forward to the camaraderie of life at camp, with the tight-knit, high-emotional, free-wheeling Nepharan spirit. Oh, the tales she'd heard! But no, it turned out everyone was mostly just hunkered down, in their own world...
"Could be worse," said Tanith Xu philosophically. Or 'Yunjie', of late, as she had reverted to her Yue name as she attempted without success to make friends here. She had, somehow, enjoyed this. Fang looked at her with some envy; Xu really seemed to relish the opportunity to go around, talking eagerly to people in her proficient Yueyu, speaking in a merely out-of-place Yue accent inherited from her immigrant parents, and seemingly blind to the fact that, well, fluent in the language or not, she was still flagrantly, immediately identifiable as Other. She was very intelligent, in all senses, so perhaps she was just too confident to care.
Maybe it was the statues to a different Xu. It was a good surname to have, here.
"Guess so," muttered Fang.
"Hey, look. I know it's not been everything you hoped for, but you're still young. There'll be more tournaments. It'll be different. For now, just... get to knowing the team, get it done on the pitch - and you've done damn fine work thus far - lift a trophy at the end and get a medal to show for it." Xu shrugged. "It's easy for me to be philosophical, I know--"
"It really is!"
"-- but you'll get to that point, too. Trust me." Xu clapped Fang heavily on the back. "Now, c'mon, I'll treat you."
Fang looked up doubtfully at the place they were seemingly headed towards. "Pizza? The nutritionist'll flip her lid!"
"What she doesn't know won't hurt her," said Xu. "We are going to enjoy our skinless chicken breast and unseasoned rice, aren't we? Washed down with a... bloody kale smoothie, or whatever."
Fang grunted. But the allure of pizza was strong. It did smell good...
Xu decided not to bother talking her around, and stepped up gamely to order a slice. Fang followed up, fuelled by FOMO, speaking her order in halting Yueyu forced through the filter of a distinctive West Sabrefell drawl. She felt self-conscious, and very far from home. But pizza did arrive, and there was a limit to how bad things could be with pizza. Right?
Perhaps Xu didn't think so. Her beatific smile lasted until first contact with palate. "Eugh!"
"Too hot? Burn your mouth?"
Xu vibrated unhappily.
"What? Is it poison? Do you think they knew who we--"
She swallowed, with some effort. "No, it just--" She glanced toward the staff, before leaning in conspiratorially. "It just tastes like shit."
"Huh?" Curiosity killed the Catheline. Except it... didn't. She frowned, unsure what Xu was talking about. Okay, so it was... sweet. Uncommonly so. Tart. But it wasn't... well, it wasn't reflective of any of the rang eof expressions passing through Xu's face, she thought.
"It's not that bad," said Fang.
"Then you're welcome to it." Xu grimaced, and subtly shunted her plate across the table, ignoring the evil eye from the owner.

Siege mentality could only take one so far.
Nephara laboured as Naixi fought their way to a grim but effective 1-0 win, a penalty from excessive Nepharan physicality making the difference. Every Nephar on the pitch would have sworn blind it was home advantage with enough conviction to pass a polygraph test, mostly because the sheer power of their patriotism was enough to dispel any knowledge of the Laws of the Game in that moment. Unfortunately, the referee was of the mind that, yes, grabbing someone's shirt with enough force to throw them to the ground as they got past was, in fact, a foul. Longstreet was taken the wrong way.
A few times, Igrene Cantor glanced up to the stands ruefully. Tanith Xu looked up there with concern. And the camera panned there with a voyeur's gaze. There was one player who should have been on the bench, should have been ready to come on, offering
Instead, the camera found Catheline Fang shivering miserably under two layers of jackets, looking as pale as death.

Psychotic Dictatorship

Postby Astograth » Tue Sep 12, 2023 7:22 pm

In the cut-throat world of international diplomacy, ambassadors, consuls, and other diplomatic staff are protected by WA General Assembly Resolution #22. Through the magic of diplomatic immunity, they cannot be prosecuted for crimes by the foreign state in whose territory they are serving. This immunity extends to designated official packages, which can be anything from an envelope to a shipping container. These packages are immune from being inspected or searched in any way, and to do so would be a gross violation of international law and major diplomatic incident, not committed lightly. Nationstates across the multiverse can and do use this privilege to move such things as secret documents, cash, gold, firearms, bodies, and even drugs. The protected containers in which these items are transported are called diplomatic bags.

Naixi is not a member state of the World Assembly, but it nevertheless chooses to abide by some of its resolutions. One of these is the principle of diplomatic immunity. Therefore, there exists one way to semi-legally transport alcohol into the country. It is called diplomatic bags.

After the 4th matchday of Copa Rushmori 44, with the Astograthian national football team lying second-to-last of group 3, Operation Potato went into effect. This was executed primarily by the Astograthian National Intelligence Agency (ANIA), an organ of the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with the Futbol Astograthiko Federazioa and with tacit complicity from the Astograthian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Immediately after Astograth’s 6-3 loss to Gnejs, a case of vodka in an anti-tamper green crate labelled GRAND DUCHY OF ASTOGRATH – DIPLOMATIC BAG was transported overnight on a direct flight from Rumiatzi to Chumeichang under supervision of a senior intelligence operative. From Chumeichang airport, the crate was escorted to the Astograthian embassy, a back room of which had been hastily converted from attaché office to improvised laboratory. With pipettes and beakers sourced from education supply shops across the city – paid for in cash only and using local contacts as middlemen – ANIA agents used food colouring to successfully tint the vodka into an exact shade of blue and then introduced the vodka into new bottles of the national team’s sponsored DAINERI STARTING GOALKEEPER isotonic beverage. This was done to a proportion of 70% blue-tinted isotonic drink to 30% blue-tinted vodka, the precise mixture required to fill 60 bottles of 500ml each. An inconspicuous green rubber band was attached to these to mark them as Special Reserve, for the daily consumption of one specific player.

The bottles were repackaged into their original DAINERI STARTING GOALKEEPER boxes, placed in the boot of an armoured car, and delivered to the training ground of the Astograthian national team in Fuzaidai under the guise of an ambassadorial visit.

In the upper circles of the National Intelligence Agency, Operation Potato was judged a resounding success.

Over the following four matches, Astograth had rallied to draw 3-3 against Elmyia and 2-2 against Sargossa, then beat Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland 5-2 and Captina Island 2-0. The improvement was obvious and its key architect one Baraxil Muhaburu, who up until matchday 5 had been noticeably lacking his usual spark and brilliance.

In a back room in Wanqianganga, hours before the decisive final match against Cabo Azure, Baraxil Muhaburu sipped a bottle of green-rubber-banded DAINERI STARTING GOALKEEPER. They had to beat Cabo Azure – top of the group – and hope for the miracle of a Gnejs loss. Under the watchful eye of the team nutritionist, he felt the electricity in his toes and the wide blur of his vision narrow into the clear tunnel of precise objectives.

Pregnancies are not permitted

“Welcome and welcome back to another episode of Football And/Or Politics! With Amanda Guttisdóttir!”

During World Cup 94, former Snow Wolves and Holdenberg City midfielder Amanda Guttisdóttir, looking to move into broadcasting and media work, was mistakenly double booked for separate radio interviews, one about football, one about politics. Despite the mix-up, the mix-up was a surprising hit with listeners, and she has now turned it into a regular podcast feature.

“So, Amanda, we’re looking back at the week in politics, and the week in football. And I guess it’s fair to say the big story of the day is: pregnancy.”

“Yes, the news that Aríela Hjörleifsdóttir is leaving the Copa Rushmori squad and flying home, because she’s pregnant, has really captured a lot of attention for, I don’t mean to be rude, but a fringe squad player who hasn’t even been playing anyway. Even with some defensive doubts about París Vilgeirsdóttir, Thor has generally gone to Harmony Serpentmane as his first choice replacement for her. So in one sense, Aríela isn’t a huge miss for the Snow Wolves and it probably doesn’t change their short term plans that much. But I’m sure she’ll still be disappointed to miss out.”

“Thank you Amanda, but, I was actually talking about the government’s new welfare bill. Is this paternalism run amok? Should the government really be getting involved in such private decisions? Isn’t this a question for individual families?”

“I don’t see it that way, Brian, I think the government are making some very sensible investments here, and making good use of taxpayer money. A study by the Institute for Convenient Statistics for Podcast Hosts to Casually Drop Into Conversation has shown that investing in maternal health and early childhood education has a much greater return on investment than later interventions.”

“Some Left-slate supporters are very angry at the Social Democrats for dropping their free university pledge in exchange for full funding for the ‘Healthy Start’ initiative. But you’re saying it’s a fair trade-off…?”

“I absolutely think it is. By university, it’s too late to close the attainment gap that really starts in early childhood.”

“Speaking of trouble on the left flank.”

    “Yes, the coalition is very…”

    “The left back position.”

“Ah, we’ve moved on have we.”

“You don’t think Aríela Hjörleifsdóttir will be greatly missed?”

“She’s a great young player and I think she’ll win a lot of caps in the future, but right now, we have other options that seemed to be getting playing time even before this medical news broke.”

“Is she taking a gamble by taking time off to have a baby? She’s still young, still establishing herself. Is there a danger that by the time she comes back, her place will have been taken by someone else?”

“Well, there’s a danger of that, but there’s always a danger of that anyway, any time you step away for any sort of personal or medical reason, or even if you just keep playing. You know, in World Cup 91, I turned up to training one day and there was a small blonde girl in a training bib in my place in the line-up. Chuckles. Though I think Igrene made the right call that day, in hindsight.”

“That’s very gracious of you Amanda, but I actually wasn’t talking about football.”

“Of course not. Brian, have we revisited the idea of maybe separating out into…”

“No. Anyway, I was talking about politics, and about Prime Minister Kaija Michaelsdóttir, who – any minute now, really – will become the first Prime Minister of Græntfjall to give birth while in office. This isn’t exactly breaking news, she’s as big as a house right now…” You can hear Amanda’s eyes rolling. “…but I’d like your thoughts on this unprecedented decision.”

“It’s a little less shocking when you take into account that she’s the only woman that’s ever served as Prime Minister, so the odds were somewhat stacked on that one. But let’s look at what she’s done since she first announced her pregnancy: she’s signed two new major trade deals, negotiated a budget that cuts taxes for 98% of Græntfjallers while reducing the deficit by over a trillion krónor, and opened the largest commercial canal in modern history. It certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing her down and I see no reason why she won’t continue to be an outstanding Prime Minister.”

“Some people have said she should have stepped aside once she found out she was pregnant.”

“These are the same troglodytes who say she’s anti-family because she stands up for gay rights and single parents, aren’t they? Pah, nothing she could ever do would be good enough for them. We have maternity leave in this country. It’s a good thing that it’s available to everyone, from factory workers and office staff to CEOs and, yes, Prime Ministers. I think she’s setting a fine example, and…”

“Actually I was talking about Aríela. Should she not have recused herself from the squad when she knew she was pregnant?”

“If she felt comfortable continuing to train and play during the early stages then I don’t think it’s for us to second guess that decision.”

“A number of your former teammates have had children while playing. Eiríka Jonathansdóttir, Jade Miansdóttir, Elektra Lúthersdóttir. A common thread is that none have quite been the players they were after coming back, and in all three cases it effectively ended their international careers.”

“Those are my friends, but what I would say is all of them were over 30 when they had their first child. Aríela is much younger, so it’s a very different situation.”

“But the Prime Minister is also over 30. Do you think she’ll find it difficult to come back?”

“Oh, we’ve moved on again, have we. Perhaps she will, obviously none of us truly know how we’ll react to such major life changes. But she has a husband, an extensive support staff, and thanks to her own legislative agenda, a well funded child care system, so, it’s not like she’ll be on her own.”

“But it does mean she won’t be going to Futengma.”

“It’s not a big miss. It’s a dead rubber game at the end of qualifying. Kæja Finnvarðsdóttir is suspended, we’re playing a team we have no real history against with nothing to play for. And I think we can see, based on these last two games, that the Snow Wolves are tiring after this long qualifying schedule. The late sub against Isle Noire really perked things up, and against Tikariot, it’s an emotional derby but, the game was, to be honest, a snoozefest. I don’t think she will be missing very much by not attending the game.”

    “I meant Aríela.”

“Ah. Well, she played on loan at Xue. So I think in a sense she might have liked to revisit Ruan Tu, sorry if I’m not saying that right. And it’s interesting, that by getting pregnant, she’s actually doing something she wouldn’t have been allowed to do had she stayed in Naixi. But I’m sure there will be chances in the future.”

“Final thoughts, Amanda. Your predictions for the final result tomorrow?”

“I’m going positive, I think another high scoring game to close out qualifying. 3 – 1, Snow Wolves.”

“Actually, I meant the vote on the appropriations bill.”

    “Oh for… It’ll pass, it’ll pass.”

“I didn’t ask on air, but, does it make you feel old?”

“Sorry!?”

“Hjörleifur Reynarsson, you played with him, and now here he is, about to become a grandfather!”

“Haha. Oh, no. I’m excited for him! He’s really looking forward to it. I just hope everything goes smoothly. We’re all going to get together for a grandpa shower for him.”

“A grandpa shower?”

“Like a baby shower, but with more liquor.”

“Sounds fun. All your old teammates?”

“Most of them. Sara’s not invited. And Jason… I know he’d come if he could, but, we still haven’t heard from him.”

“He’s been gone a long time now.”

“Yes. Almost nine months.”

Captina Island looking to make a breakthrough

(TCCPA) Qiawutian City, Naixi--The Captina Company Football Team has one final match to play at the 44th Copa Rushmori and it could be the biggest in the nation's history.

The Rossi e Oro will take on the Prosaic Union, also known familiarly as Gneis, here at the Sha Dadao Stadium in the capital. A win, coupled with a draw in the match between Stvoto Latoli and Elmyia plus a Cabo Azure win or draw over Astograth would see Captina leapfrog all four nations ahead of them for a berth in the knockout stage in a major tournament for the first time.

The opponent has seemingly underachieved thus far in the competition until the final few matchdays, a six point haul in their previous two contests nearly doubling the point total they'd attained through 6 fixtures. There are reports that there is dissention and unrest in the camp, one unconfirmed story making the rounds is that a fight between teammates has sent one player to hospital and the other sent home.

Meanwhile, Manager Jonas Yarborough has no injury concerns and plans to field the same lineup that has become a nearly automatic selection--Bernardo Rossi in net with Emilio Coppola, Emerson Coverdale, Fiorella Nightshade and Isaia Caruso at the back with Barnabas Morningstar, Emanuele Valentini, Marcella Lilywhite and Nicola Tardelli in midfield with Patience Wedgewood and Guiseppi Overstreet up front

Waiting around to die

Hibiskus Andersson let out a deep sigh and looked out of the hospital window. The Yafei skyline looked as foreign as ever. He tried to shift his position, but the pain in his butt was too intense to endure. «This is it», he thought to himself and glumly observed the stale and half-eaten pizza slice on his night-stand table.

«This is how The End starts. If somebody ever decided to look back and write the story of his life - of course, nobody ever would - this right here would be the defining moment, the starting point of his descent into bottomless wretchedness. They’d take his leg and ass, these foreign doctors. Of course they would, and there’d be no other option, really, than to saw it right off along the hip somewhere and keep the dirty continental gangrene his ass no doubt was infected with from spreading and killing him. And then it’d just spiral downwards from there.

Football, his dreams, his life, all gone forever. There’d be alternatives, of course, like fancy robotic prosthetics and that kind of stuff they probably have down on the continent, but he wouldn’t be able to afford it. The club would take care of him, mostly due to contractual obligations and perhaps a bit longer than they actually needed due to pity, but nothing excessive like that. He’d get a paycheck of sorts for doing absolutely nothing and just exist without purpose for a while, and then he’d probably end up applying for some sort of disability benefit. He’d likely hang around back home for a few years, drinking too much while becoming consumed with hatred and self-pity. Jennifer would stick around for a while as well, but in the end she would become totally alienated by his mood swings and fits of rage, crying as she slammed the door in his face while screaming that she can’t take it anymore.

And then one day he would just get sick of it all and pack up whatever belongings he had and board a plane for the continent, probably one of the big metropolises where you can go to get lost and nobody cares. He’d live in squalor in some seedy small rental apartment in a bad neighborhood and waste away whatever little money he had left on booze and light drugs, and as his alcoholism worsened he’d inevitably move on to more potent and heavy drugs and get mixed up with all kinds of bad people and reach new all-time lows he’d never even considered before.

He would keep that up for a few years and then he would of course go through a short period of bliss, where he probably ends up with some older woman from one of the dive bars - someone who’s also been hurt and scarred, once pretty but now ravaged with grief and alcohol - and they would go away together to some slightly smaller city by the coast and live in harmony for three months while he experiences real love for the first time, before he just as inevitably sabotages his last chance at any form of happiness by being unfaithful with the young girls down by the beach and wasting away whatever little money she had saved up on drugs and pocket knives. It will all end in tears as she leaves and never looks back and he descends even deeper into a pit of his own making.

And it’s probably a few months later that his teeth and hair start falling out due to his extended heavy drug use and for some reason he decides to adopt a stray dog from the street, which becomes the only real thing to motivate him in actually keeping it going a while longer as he takes to the road and achieves a momentary respite from his pathetic self-pity. They’ll spend their lives in the shadows of society and even though it’s grim it still feels nice to have someone warm sleeping next to you on the streets of big and cruel and cold mega-cities. And then when the dog dies, probably from malnourishment and neglect, he would lose whatever Geist he had left and…»

There was a knock at the door and a Naixi doctor entered. She flips through a few papers on the chart in her hands, then looks up and smiles.

«Nothing serious, Mr. Andersson. Some rest, a bit of antibiotics, and you’ll be out there prancing around in a few weeks.»

UNE TRAGÉDIE NATIONALE

A nation bestowed with the honor of hosting such a storied and important sporting event such as the Copa Rushmori should not be in the habit of allowing massive domestic crises to unfold while the world's eyes are upon it. And yet, here we are. Following weeks of concerned statements from various participant countries in Rushmore's highest international-level footballing tournament - particularly around Naixi's national alcohol policy - the pressure valve has been veritably blown off following the terrorist attack on the main Naixese Genome Project Data Hub and Incubation Center at Fuzaidai. Another Celestial Councilor is dead - the second-youngest, on this occasion, Nai Jian - and the Xu family mourns yet another loss. The nation too mourns an attack on not only its sovereignty but its racial destiny, as the laboratory, which was the store for all of the infants to be born in the Celestial Empire in the next year, is a total loss.

Nai Jian, a long time supporter of the NGP and the middle child of Xiao Jun Xu, was known to be working at the site of the attack. Her body, alongside the bodies of some 3 dozen others (not to mention the many thousands of fetuses that were in incubation in vats), was recovered from the wreckage by the National Police. The National Police recovered a device from the crime scene that appears to be some kind of sonic weapon designed to shatter glass, indicating that the target was the NGP rather than the Celestial Councilor.

A National Police spokesperson was opaque when asked by a le Sommet journalist whether it was known who orchestrated the act of terrorism. Though the spokesperson refused to comment on details, it seemed as though very few leads had made themselves known during the early days of the investigation. We can say this: we specifically asked if the radical fringe group Guiding Hand - which has been accused of involvement in the death of Zhi Hong, the first Celestial Councilor to perish - and the spokesperson replied "we are treating them as an organization of interest. They certainly have the means and motivation to pull off an attack on the nation's future like this."

The deputy prime minister, Queer Anarchist Party chairman Jiu Ling Sa, has made a series of public announcements since the attack, and has certainly increased his media footprint. In the vacuum created by the death of Nai Jian, Mr. Sa - who already wielded significant power within the NGP as the Czar for Genomic Management - seems in pole position to take leadership of the Project as it rebuilds and recovers. "The NGP is the institution to which the historically oppressed people of Naixi turn for deliverance. We will not be deterred by this horrific act. We will rebuild all of the data hubs. We will rebuild all of the vat banks. Our mastery of Naixese genetics will only grow stronger."

In response to the massive hit to the country's birth rate sure to come as a result of the attack, the coalition government has agreed to temporarily rescind restrictions on biological reproduction. Most citizens agree it is a necessary adaptation in order to survive, although there are a number of dissenters who feel that the increase in genetic mutation and variance are unacceptable. To those, we at le Sommet respond, "better some non-Naixese children than none at all."

Parliament is scheduled to begin an emergency session next week, and will vote on temporarily lifting the alcohol consumption ban, as well, at least while the Copa Rushmori is occurring.

LA JUSTICE RÉINVENTÉE

"How many more mothers must die because an impaired driver was unafraid of a judge's gavel? How many more fathers must be humiliated because their son or daughter who got a tattoo was unafraid of jail time? Enough is enough!" exclaimed a furious protester outside of the Supreme Court three days ago. His lamentations, shared by many conservatives all across the nation of Naixi, were heard. Amidst the furious upheaval in the wake of the death of yet another Celestial Councilor and, of course, the huge setback at the NGP, the Supreme Court was facing appallingly low approval ratings and a total loss in public legitimacy. With public appetite for massive judicial reforms never having been higher, it became clear in the last 24 hours that something was going to have to give.

That give has come from the Supreme Court itself, which has, along with all other courts in the country, been abolished. This shocking move has been met with joy from many on the right, who felt that the judicial apparatus was too often upholding the civil rights of political radicals, degenerate criminals, and triad-affiliated gangsters (as well as a number of witless idiots on the far left, who have deemed this a victory "for anarchists and anti-state activists of all types").

What exactly will replace the elaborate systems of trials and deliberation is not currently known, but what is known is that the National Police and the Department of Corrections will become the main points of enforcement of Naixese laws. (Some would say this literally makes them judge, jury, and executioner. Not us at le Sommet, though.) Accused criminals will continue to be confined at detention centers across the country, and police have the authority to arbitrarily award damages to victims or victims' families based on what forfeited goods are found on perpetrators' persons upon arrest.

Various long-term proposals for the reform of the judiciary are being entertained by the Celestial Council and Ru Ping Lai government as we speak. It is said, or so le Sommet has been told, that the most popular option for conviction of accused criminals is trial by ordeal, an ancient form of justice wherein guilt or innocence is determined through subjecting alleged perpetrators to a dangerous and/or painful experience. Octopus Reef, a section of (almost entirely dead) coral reef off the coast of Futengma, is seen as an appealing place to hold such trials by ordeal. A number of factors make it notably dangerous. Firstly, industrial chemical seepage from a nearby river delta has made the water near the reef particularly poisonous, and the reef is also home to a community of horribly mutated octopuses said to be incredibly aggressive towards humans.

One proposal involves using a large boat to drop off criminals a distance from shore dependent on the severity of the crime they are accused of, with minor offenders dropped off a mere fifty yards from the coastline and rapists and murderers dropped off ten miles out. Such a proposal might require constitutional ratification by Naixese voters, but one imagines that such a barbaric creative reinvention of the justice system might be received well by the Celestial Empire's generally reactionary public.

UN CHALLENGER MAIS PAS UN BLEU

When Sporting Noordende's Lan Fang Fen and Cazadores Cathair's Guan Cai Tsung shook hands during the pregame commotion on the pitch at the City of Hawthorne Stadium before the Challenger's Cup final, there was much mutual respect and humility on display between the two young men. Three years ago, they were teammates at Xiniu in the League of the Two Sapphires, struggling along through a dismal Season 1 as Nan Nan Hong led the club to a relegation. That these two athletes were now standing on the pitch together (such a short period of time later) before an illustrious event as an IFCF final, is truly remarkable.

And yet, for those of us who viewed the game with an eye on our two Naixese national comrades squaring off on opposite sides for the big game, their former history as friends while they were both Blue Rhinos was far from anyone's mind. What we were focused on is the national scandal that has emerged because Fen is not at the Copa Rushmori.

How did this happen? The man who eventually had a gold medal placed around his neck in Xanneria was not only the plainly better player on the evening (the center back Tsung's Caza were in the game but shipped three goals and were poor at the rear), but has been consistently putting on stellar performances for Sporting with regularity for some time. There is no excuse for him to not be back in the Blues' squad, particularly when Naixi are headed into the knockout phase of CR44 and desperately need to control games better from the base of midfield.

Instead, the Capnordic champions get to have Fen all to themselves, as Gui Fan Ren has stupidly declined to call him up in his last several national team selections. Perhaps Fen is seen as too ambitious, building from the back with creative passing rather than sitting low and exploding forward only when opportunities arise, as Mei Ying Chang is known to do. But Fen has always excelled in systems built around possession tactics, and despite Ren's Naixi being famously stingy at the back (they've conceded by far the fewest goals of any team at the Copa thus far), the Blues are a team that likes to hold possession as well. Why Fen cannot be of some use to his country is baffling to everyone.

Should Naixi falter at this tournament, let us at le Sommet be known by all to be on the right side of history; we decry the decision by our national team manager to not offer Lan Fang Fen a call-up. We can only hope that Ren will prove us wrong. And, in fairness, the Blues look splendid thus far, finishing at the top of a tough Group 1. Can it be sustained, though? As the opponents get tougher and tougher, we will see if our midfield is cultured enough to adapt to the rising standards. Fen would have been a huge step towards guaranteeing that it was.

Corsairs Through. Cormorants Await

Blanco Borrayo reports from Fuzaidai;

It was a rare attack offered up by Thibaea. But it died almost as soon as it had begun, as the three Sargossan centrebacks stepped up in unison to catch the attempted charge over the top offside. Coach Slavko Jelic had made a minor tweak, replacing Gerard Rodríguez with his club teammate Joaquín Sanz at centreback after the draw with Astograth. But it was paying dividends. The Corsairs hadn’t conceded since. They’d fought out a cagey goalless draw with top seeds and group leaders Cabo Azure. And then battered Olastor by four goals to nil in Bijiben. A result that put the Corsairs four points clear of the fifth placed side, with just one game to play. And ensuring them of a place in the last sixteen.

That final game was against a Thibaea side that had struggled their way to just a single point in their eight previous group fixtures. Jelic did more then tweak for the near-dead rubber, with Moisés Garrido and Dani Azuaga coming in either side of Fernando Moruga in midfielder. And Lucas Recoba partnering Jesús Blaya in an entirely changed front two. Any fears that the changes may have led to a disjointed performance were countered by the lack of ambition of a Thibaea side that were, statistically speaking, the tournament’s worst performers. Those that had made the journey, and they were few, to the shall-we-say quaint and compact Gongren Jinku in the unassuming border town of Fuzaidai saw a largely one-sided encounter.

A beautifully weighted through ball from Moruga played Garrido clean through for the first. The Ciudad Soluca midfielder rounded the keeper before coolly slotting in his first international strike. Recoba got the second with a typical poacher’s finish, an analogy not based suited to the nature obsessed locals at this distant outpost of the Celestial Empire. The match ticked in, at times resembling a practise session, with Sargossa already assured of a place in the knockout stages and Thibaea’s finest mentally already on their plane home. A third goal would complete the victory, and it was the best of the lot. Gustavo Alcocer is no stranger to goal scoring cameos. And the Mytanar based frontman delivered again. He took advantage of the back-pedalling defensive line to lash in a rocket from twenty-three yards out.

As Slavko Jelic shock the hand of his opposite number at the final whistle he had a smile on his face. But there was just a hint of ruefulness to it. Certainly, with seven goals scored and none conceded in the final three group games, it looked like he’d found that balance the side had so obviously been missing in recent months. But once again the draws had proven so costly. Certainly the Corsairs would advance as one of only four nations with unbeaten records. But those stalemates with Stvoto Latoli, Astograth and Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland had come back to haunt. Trailing top of the table Cabo Azure by four points, they were unable to take advantage of Las Maçaricas’ surprise defeat to Astograth. Leaving Sargossa in second place, and with the eighth best performance overall. Pairing them with the ninth best team overall. Some plucky newcomer maybe? Nope, it’s ruddy Nephara isn’t it.

On eleven previous occasions the nations have clashed. The Corsairs claimed victory in the very first but wouldn’t taste it again until fixture number nine. Interestingly, considering the calibre of the opposition, Sargossa have won each of their last three against Nephara. There was a win in the group stage at World Cup 83, the last time the Corsairs won a World Cup finals fixture, a penalty shootout victory in the quarter finals of the thirty third Copa Rushmori. And a third place playoff triumph in Mytanija two Copas ago. It’s a surprisingly good recent record. One that will no doubt be tested to the absolute limit very shortly in Chumeichang.

MYTANIJA 2-1 REA SAN VEGAS

MYT:
Skara 14’, 23’

MYT: 1. Besak; 2. Beganovic, 14. Suljic, 24. Miokovic-Cica, 5. Lusamba (sub. Koshkin 67’), 17. Ovcina; 7. Papez (sub. Atsev 67’), 8. Skenderovic (sub. Zmiric 67’), 10. Ovsyannikov (sub. Anusic 45’); 9. Skara, 21. S. Mlinarevic (sub. Prpic-Bosanac 89’)

Drazen Skara stood in the middle of the centre circle, sweat flecking his brow under the unforgiving floodlights of the Huangse Migong stadium in Chumeichang. This ground would eventually host the third-place play-off, the one game which nobody wanted to play in, but for now it was filled with the roars of Mytanija’s passionate support – almost forming a living, breathing organism, each heartbeat synchronised with the hopes of dreams of those devoted fans. In the grand tapestry of international football this match would be something of a footnote, a minor skirmish against Rea San Vegas with qualification already decided. Mytanija’s supporters didn’t see it that way, though, and there was a hint of disquiet among them due to the fact Rea San Vegas had opened the scoring inside the opening ten minutes through Vitalico Spendlove. The scoreboard displayed the 1-0 deficit against the relative minnows, and it was an anomaly which grated not only on the fans’ senses, but also Drazen Skara’s.

The opening minutes of any game were always something of a blur in Drazen’s mind, but here that effect was magnified even further. The goal was conceded in a flash, a dent to Mytanija’s pride and a collective gasp of disbelief which bordered on eerie. Mytanija rarely conceded the first goal, particularly at this Copa Rushmori, but here Rea San Vegas built quickly and efficiently and simply finished off a fine move with an emphatic finish. But this was Skara’s team and whilst he had gotten off to a slow start by his own usual standards he was not going to let such transgressions go unanswered for long. As the Ketioulais referee’s whistle pierced the thick air, Drazen’s focus was unyielding. The ball was in motion and immediately he was in the thick of it, dropping into midfield to receive the ball and single-handedly drag Mytanija up the pitch. Normally it would be Denis Ovsyannikov creating things out of nothing like a master sculptor, but here Skara was more of an avant-garde artiste, disrupting the usual flow of things as a commentary on the situation.

Mytanija were 1-0 down against a team they should beat. Time for Skara to turn things around.

Drazen appeared to take the concession as a personal insult and with his efforts it was only five minutes later when time seemed to slow as he received a perfectly weighted pass from his good friend Ovsi in midfield, the moment hung in the air like a well-struck note and Drazen embraced the opportunity with open arms. Minutes prior it had been a collective gasp of shock, but now it was a collective intake of breath in expectation as Drazen took one touch to take the ball beyond the outstretched defender and then another to wallop the shot past Xander Menicucci. There was a hint of arrogance in this piece of play, the sheer belief in his ability to not even take a look up at any point, the nonchalance despite striking the ball as sweetly as he did. Drazen had been in countless situations like this before and he knew what to do. And he wasn’t going to allow Mytanija to lose to Rea San Vegas.

The eruption from the stands was background noise for him, although one he could contently fall to sleep to if given the chance. As his teammates approached to congratulate him on the equaliser, he was already heading back towards the centre circle after picking the ball up out of the net. Parity was not enough here, though he recognised and was thankful for his teammates’ camaraderie, there was still a job to do, still a goal to find to put Mytanija in front and on top for the first time in the game. He knew that the true measure of a player was their ability to seize control of the game when their team needed them, to take the responsibility when required and, although this game was not one of the most important, nobody wanted to stain a solid group stage record with a shock defeat in the final match against opposition they should be beating.

The match resumed and Skara was in amongst everything once again, demonstrating his skill and precision with a series of delicate touches and lay-offs for the likes of Ovsi and Jasno Skenderovic. A threaded pass through the Rea San Vegas defence gave Stipe Mlinarevic a good chance to score, but Menicucci got a big hand to the shot and parried the ball around his left-hand post. Drazen was wired into the game and it felt like the goal, or at the very least a vital contribution to one, was on its way. Indeed, less than ten minutes after his first, the chance arrived. The vulnerability in Rea San Vegas’ defence was exposed as Skenderovic broke through their lines with a powerful run from midfield and the Alnio midfielder soon found Skara, albeit with two defenders to beat.

That degree of arrogance that all good strikers have surged in his veins. He had earned the right to be audacious over the years, fearless in the face of any defender and here he cheekily left one floundering with a quick change of pace before nutmegging the other and bearing down on goal. A flick of his right boot saw the ball sail over Menicucci, already flying out to try and prevent the shot but leaving himself at the mercy of a well-executed dink. A second goal, and the one which put Mytanija into the lead. The roar from the crowd was deafening, they clearly didn’t consider it to be a minor fixture. Drazen’s chest swelled with pride, as it always did when scoring for his country, but also because he was the one to take the game by the scruff of the neck and put Mytanija back in front.

But even as he revelled in the moment, he remained acutely aware of the bigger picture. This result was inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, Mytanija had already secured qualification from their group and the real challenges lay ahead in the knockout stages of the tournament. Mytanija had experienced a long drought in terms of tangible success and this talented group of players had massively underperformed in the recent past, Drazen included. They all needed more moments like this one, moments which change the course of a match, moments which get the big result against the most difficult opposition.

That was the true test and Drazen knew that this team needed to prove that they could step up when it really matters.

Ahead of the octofinal against Oberour Ar Moro in Qiawutian, our Aiden Donaghy was able to sit down with coach Brian McAllister.

AD: Thank you, Coach McAllister--

BM: Brian.

AD: THank you, Brian, for sitting down with me this morning despite the important game against Oberour Ar Moro later on. How is the atmosphere in the team right now?

BM: Good! We've had a really good tournament so far.

AD: You finished the group in second, four points behind Græntfjall. Would you have hoped for more?

BM: You can always hope for more. But did I expect more? Not really. We were in a group with Græntfjall, Nyowani Kitara, Pasarga, Polar Islandstates and we came through unbeaten, so I really can't complain. The Copa Rushmori is such an incredibly competitive regional tournament, so these results have been great, the team has shown a lot of spirit and cohesion, so I think we're in a pretty good position for the knock-outs.

AD: You mention the knock-outs, we could meet Græntfjall again in the semifinals in what some people have now dubbed The Inevitable Derby. Any thoughts?

BM: None whatsoever. A lot of things have to happen for that to become a reality and to be perfectly honest, I think it would be very disrespectful to Oberour Ar Moro to already talk about two games ahead, and we can't allow ourselves to get cocky or distracted by what might be.

AD: How are the players ahead of the game?

BM: It's a mix between excitement and determination. They're very aware that the game is a stepping stone toward what we came here for, but I think they are handling the pressure very well so far.

AD: Talking about pressure, how does this Copa Rushmori compare to the last two?

BM: It's like apples and oranges, and throw some raspberries into the mix while you're at it. When we won two years ago, we had never won anything, so we all got caught up in the excitement and the adrenaline was going. There were no big expectations other than what could be possible, but then the last time around, everybody knew that we could win this thing and were expecting us to repeat the win or at least get close and I'm still not sure what exactly it was, but that seemed to have given the players a bit of a mental blockage and they weren't playing how I know they could. Now, this time around, people at home want to see us bounce back, but I think that the pressure overall is less because by now we have won the trophy once, so we have a proven concept.

AD: As the most successful coach in Tikariot's history--

BM: Well, to be fair, there've only been two of us.

AD: Haha, fair, fair. But what I was going for is, you've won the CR with Tikariot once and twice with Sargossa, is the Copa Rushmori "your" tournament?

BM: Haha, it feels like it, doesn't it? Nah, I don't view it as that much different. Sure, the top teams feel a lot closer and we've actually won it, but a deep run in a World Cup would be something nice for a change.

AD: Have you guys been able to explore Naixi at all?

BM: Not as much as I would have hoped, bceause compared to the last Copas, the group stage was quite a bit longer, so we tried to stay focused for the whole stretch. But we've had some time yesterday to do some sightseeing around Qiawutian.

AD: So how'd that go?

BM: It was nice, it's the nicest and best-kept city we've been to so far, even though we've been warned to stay away from the Seaport District. It's a very vibrant city with a lot going on and it has a very distinctly different feel than the rest of Naixi so far.

AD: Did you explore the local cuisine?

BM: At the hotel, yes, outside of it, we don't want to risk anything not sitting well with any of the players. No offence toward our hosts, but you can't be too careful.

AD: Understandable. So, as the draw has it, you will remain in Qiawutian for as long as stay in the tournament.

BM: Yeah, I wouldn't mind enjoying this city for a good while longer, haha. As interesting as it can be to see different parts of a country, it's good to have a homebase. It allows us to get into a good rhythm and not have to worry about traveling and settling in again and all that. Have a good rest, have a set time to train and all, it'll be good.

AD: How have the accommodations been so far?

BM: Overall pretty good. You just can't really go anywhere on your own. They try to be discreet but you just know that there's always someone close by keeping an eye.

AD: To keep you safe?

BM: I suppose, but I think it's more to make sure we don't do anything that they might deem non-kosher, I don't know. But they haven't interfered with anything so far, so it's ok, I guess.

AD: Any last thoughts before the game? Any prediction?

BM: I don't like making predictions, because people are going to hold me to them, haha. But I think we have a good chance tonight. The team has been playing very well and we've analyzed the hell out of the Oberourans to make sure know exactly how to crack them. Overall, I'd like to say a big thank you to the fans that have been traveling across Naixi to attend our games and also hang out near our hotel. Your support means a lot to us and I know that it can gives us that extra little bit and crank it to 11.

AD: Thank you, Brian, we'll be crossing our fingers tonight and are looking forward to an exciting game.

BM: Thank you, Aiden, we'll try our very best!

MERSON TRUSTS HIS GUT(A)
Surprise pick nets winner in dramatic end to group stage

Cassadaigua’s thumping victory over Yuezhou ensured Eura would not win Group 4 at the Copa Rushmori, but the Eurans did at least finish second and progress to the next round after seeing off Zenic in a seven goal thriller.

Glen Merson had telegraphed his intention to rotate the side to the media with very unsubtle hints in his pre-game press conference, and it was no surprise with Eura already qualified mathematically for the round of 16. What was less expected was a change in formation as Eura switched to an Oslograd-esque 3-5-2. Merson’s experimentation appeared to initially pay dividends, as Eura dominated the early stages before Ben West finished from close range in the 26th minute to give the Eurans a 1-0 lead.

It was the culmination of a bad start for Zenic, who seemed to be surrendering to another defeat in a long, poor record against Eura, punctuated by a solitary victory at the 23rd Copa. However, the Survivors found their feet after going behind and began to live up to their name, overcoming the adversity of a dire first half hour. A period of pressure on the Euran backline, whose personnel were clearly unfamiliar with this formation and selection, built up to the moment when Nakazawa Shuji’s 35th minute corner found Cecil Maruscak’s head, followed by the back of the net.

Just a few minutes later, Zenic had a shock lead. They were fortunate, and Eura’s goalkeeper John Hewitt deservedly embarrassed. A seemingly harmless Hank Devor effort from 40 yards bounced at a middling pace towards Hewitt, who then fumbled a relatively routine take and had to watch the ball spin away into the bottom right hand corner. Hewitt held his head in his hands and the Euran selection on the pitch waddled around with stunned looks on their faces.

It would take Dean Barnes intervention to get the team pumping again. The Directus winger had made a fantastic start to the Copa with a match saving double against Yuezhou, only to get injured in training afterwards. By the time of matchday nine he had recovered and, despite being a bit rusty, was Eura’s best midfielder on the day. And it was his 44th minute bolt down the right – just as Eura were looking to limp to half time – that created the opportunity for an equaliser, Barnes eventually pulling the ball back with a whipped cross from almost the corner flag.

The cross bested Tess Miller and Sophie Singh, but Trent Roberts was waiting on the left to capitalise with a drilled strike that flew across the body of Saúl Mosley and in. Half time was a welcome respite regardless of the goal and Eura came out looking refreshed, though so did Zenic. A tense period early in the second half followed during which neither side was willing to take the risks needed to bag a goal. That was until Barnes hamstring started playing up again, requiring his substitution as a precaution. On came Jim Guta. Within five minutes he’d been joined by Kate Archer.

Not long after that, Guta stung the palms of Mosley twice, and Miller had a good shout for a penalty turned down. But it would be Archer who would be ideally placed to best the offside trap when Taron Matthews quickly leathered a cleared ball back into the box, where Archer was waiting with a perfectly timed run to bundle the ball over the line. Zenic, for their part, did not take this lying down. They bombed down the pitch and Hewitt had his finest moment of the game when denying Nelson Seamons with a brilliant one handed save within a minute of the restart.

Squeaky bum time followed for Eura after Devor took another attempt at goal, from much closer this time after a goal mouth scramble. He was rewarded with his second goal this time as Hewitt and his defenders tried and failed to intercept. At 3-3 Eura were bouncing back and forth, up and down with the result appearing uncertain. But the Eurans had the inexperienced and unfancied Guta to thank for securing yet another victory. It was another unglamorous goal – Guta shinned the ball through Mosley in another goal mouth dash, before wheeling off to celebrate his first international goal. Guta’s intervention held and Eura clung on (just about). They now face a tough round of sixteen test next against Gnejs at the Paodao Shuibian stadium in Qiawutian.

Oh no! We’ve run out of prohibitions to riff off. We’re actually going to have to talk about football.

Though fortunately, the football’s going pretty well. The Snow Wolves completed an unbeaten run through qualifying for the 44th Copa Rushmori and emerged, much as they entered, the number one seeds, with a date for San Isidro Labrador in the first round of playoffs. Only a slightly listless goalless draw against rivals Tikariot interrupted their 100% record. And pleasingly, they finished off their run with a win over Polar Islandstates more comprehensive than the modest 2–0 scoreline might suggest despite the absence of talismanic captain Kæja Finnvarðsdóttir, who was suspended for one game. Serrapince midfielder Sara Vatnarsdóttir was elected captain by the other players and played so well in the center midfield role that it left one to wonder what she might do were she first choice in the position. And Járngrímur Náttúlfsson and Benjamín Ísarsson came no closer to deciding which one of them should start, with both scoring fine goals.

For a totally dead rubber at the end of a long qualifying and missing the biggest name player, the win came with a hint of unanticipated from the Snow Wolves, who could have afforded an easy 90 minutes but instead hustled to the very end. It was a mixture of players playing for places in the playoffs: well as the Snow Wolves have done, their best XI remains something of a mystery; and a touch of frisson over a very one-sided rivalry. When Græntfjall began to emerge as a regional football power, the charge that they were shallow imitators of the Terns, memorably written off as a “Polar Islandstates tribute act” by a Krytenian newspaper (shortly before said tribute act thumped the Dragons 3–0), based on little more than some similarity in naming systems, did sting a bit. Despite any such lingering resentment it was a clean game, cardless until the very end when a frustrated Sebastian Nylund kicked away a free-kick and was booked, and the game ended on amiable, if decisive, terms.

The Snow Wolves have never played San Isidro Labrador before so their next round opponents are a mystery to them. With Kæja returning, Sara V should shift back out to the left; the question will be whether both Benjamín and Járngrímur can play with Amandara Navinsdóttir Thakur in such strong form, or if Rebekka Kajsdóttir comes back into the team. After falling out of favor earlier in qualifying Hrútur Melkíorsson has impressed in training and won his place back, probably, as a holding midfielder. The 4–4–2 set-up continues. The only flicker of doubt remains over Hermione Hui, who is nursing a bruised ankle, and had also not played particularly well when fit. Regardless, the Snow Wolves will enter as favorites – but not such strong favorites that they will not remember that for a decade, the Round of 16 was their biggest obstacle in the CR.

As a resumption of this storyline, everything you read here is firmly in the past. Thank you fluid time, so much to answer for.

The rain was still falling. It was days after the shooting which had shocked the city, but the rain hadn’t stopped. At least it might have washed some of the blood from the pavement. There was the unmistakeable sound of the water hitting the rusting roofs of the aircraft hangar sized warehouses deep within the labyrinthine bowels of Brigham. Some of these warehouses had fallen into disuse and disrepair and hidden away in a clandestine chamber in one of them was a dimly lit, smoke-filled room. A sanctuary of shadows which provided a safe space for some of the most unsavoury characters of the city’s underworld to whisper about their nefarious activities, perhaps the most poisoned place in the city’s poisoned underbelly.

There were some hints at who the warehouse belonged to in this room, simple but expensive Mytanar décor and antiques which stood in stark contrast to the greyness of the location, its deeply workmanlike history and the ominous atmosphere which pervaded the place. An old photo of Natella Kalinina was more in keeping with the vibes, pinned into a noticeboard on one wall with three darts hanging proudly out of her forehead, cheek and chin. The hatred for the deposed despot lingered still.

Smoke swirled lazily in the room, casting eerie patterns across the walls and shadows in the corners of the room. A pair of gilded lanterns suspended from the ceiling bathed the room in a soft amber glow, with the gold glittering in the light. To a seasoned viewer, the lanterns would be instantly recognisable as a pair stolen from an Escan museum around the same time as the infamous art thief Tomica Vjeranovic stole four priceless paintings. Quite how they had ended up in a Euran warehouse was anybody’s guess, but the shady characters in this room probably had something to do with it.

The lanterns illuminated the intricate details of the room’s more ornate furnishings, in the centre of the room was a long, ornate table carved from a dark mahogany. Its polished surface gleamed in the amber light, reflecting the serious faces of the men, because they were all men, gathered around it. The table had probably bore witness to secrets darker than the shadows clinging to the corners of the room in its time. Each of the men sat in high-backed chairs, seemingly made from the same wood as the table, albeit topped with velvet cushions of varying colours.

At the head of the table sat Zvonimir Stenko, occupying a throne-like chair, slightly larger than the rest. He could barely conceal a simmering fury as he looked around at the men sat at the table in front of him, momentarily sitting back and allowing the shadows to cling to him, obscuring his features and hiding – if only for a moment – the bubbling anger and frustration which was threatening to boil over at any moment. He sat forward again and his eyes, usually a darkish brown, were nearly jet black in the dim light, appearing as twin orbs of seething intensity.

Stenko exuded an air of authority which commanded the room, if only through the sense of anger which was emanating from him every second in tangible waves. Everybody was waiting for him to speak, to break the uncomfortable silence which weighed on the others around the table. The gravity of the situation indicated that all was not well. It was often that Stenko involved himself in these sorts of meetings nowadays. For a long time, he had taken a back seat and allowed his ‘business’ to run itself. And that had worked brilliantly for most of that time, people had avoided stepping on each other’s toes, but ever since the end of the war with the Samebans things had gradually changed. Stenko had lost the monopoly on supplying arms as weapons flooded the market from Sameba. That meant turning up the drug trafficking to eleven and searching for other ways of making money, which amounted to human trafficking, prostitution and controlling the casinos. Those sorts of things drew more attention and the heat had been turned up as a result.

Stenko’s control wasn’t what it once was. Street gangs were shooting one another in the street. Drug dealers were being arrested for supplying drugs which were killing people. Perhaps worst of all, there was word of a high-profile journalist from Mytanija doing some digging around the city, looking into a spate of ‘disappearances’ linked to Stenko’s organisation. And there was potentially going to be a Euran-born Mytanar MP in one of Brigham’s many constituencies and Stenko’s men hadn’t yet turned him. Things simply were not running as smoothly as they once might have done and Stenko’s authority, once iron-clad, was teetering a little.

A couple of his fingers were adorned with heavy Mytanar rings, which he tapped impatiently on the polished surface of the table, and on his wrist was an expensive watch, probably worth more than nine or ten immigrant families in Brigham would earn in a year. Stenko was wearing a tailored suit, a dark blue colour, with a dark red pocket square poking out of the jacket pocket in a carefree manner. With each passing moment it was becoming clearer that Stenko’s anger was something more, more of a rage, tension was etched into the lines of his face and he had his jaw clenched. The power he had wielded in Brigham for so long suddenly felt less solid, things were going wrong a little too regularly. That was a reality which he could neither accept nor tolerate, and luckily it was still repairable, albeit perhaps requiring some drastic action in order to do so.

The men around the table were Stenko’s top henchmen, the engineers of his criminal empire and its darkest deeds. They were his most trusted lieutenants, men who had proven their loyalty over more than a decade, shedding blood and deceiving law enforcement on several occasions for the cause. Now, their faces bore the unmistakeable marks of unease and apprehension. None dared to meet Stenko’s gaze, eyes darting furtively towards the table, the walls or each other to avoid making eye contact. The air was thick with palpable tension, a suffocating weight pressed down on them all. Ironic, given the crimes some of them had committed, that they should be made to feel this way.

“You,” Stenko finally broke the silence, his voice a low, menacing growl. “All of you. Incompetent fucking idiots, the lot of you!”

Some flinched slightly, but none dared to speak, remaining hunched in their seats, heads bowed. Penitents before a wrathful preacher.

“Tell me,” Stenko continued, his rings drumming a beat on the table as he impatiently tapped his nails on the table’s polished surface. “How has a kid ended up shot in broad daylight on our watch, under our very noses, and none of you managed to do anything to prevent it? I worked for years to stop these stupid turf wars from happening and I take a backseat for a while, and it all falls to bits! You’re meant to stop these things before they even happen, that’s what I trust you to do!”

“Boss, it was sudden,” Aleksandar, a burly man whose face bore the scars of a number of skirmishes, cleared his throat nervously. “We couldn’t have possibly known that this was going to happen after Leo Miletic was arrested—”

“‘Sudden’?” Stenko spat, his eyes boring into Aleksandar’s ferociously. “‘Couldn’t have possibly known’? I pay you to know Aleksandar, we are supposed to control everything which goes in this city when it comes to selling drugs, we’re supposed to ensure that people don’t do anything like this, anything which draws unnecessary attention to us and can disrupt the only thing which actually matters: making money! We’re supposed to be a professional organisation and yet here we were caught off guard and a kid is shot dead in the street. We’re lucky that nobody has given evidence this time. People are out there, talking, they’re tired of the drugs, they’re tired of the prostitution, they put up with those things because they can’t do anything about them, but kids being shot in the street? That fucking hurts people, that is relatable for them.”

The room fell silent momentarily, Stenko pausing, his mouth curled into a painful grimace.

“We oversee all of this because it makes us rich. Kids get involved because they want to get rich. But families don’t want to see their kids getting involved and getting shot in the street. People will want this to end.” Stenko said quietly, before the rising anger bubbled over once again, his voice dripping with contempt. “And all because Leo fucking Miletic got arrested! I didn’t even know this guy’s name until a couple of days ago. A small-time dealer, looking after a small patch and some kids doing his dirty work for him. He gets arrested and it threatens to unravel the whole thing!”

“He sold the cocaine to a banker,” Aleksandar mutters hurriedly. “That’s standard.”

“It is standard, Aleksandar.” Stenko replied. “What isn’t standard is for the banker to fucking die and news of his death to be plastered all over the newspapers and linked to a Mytanar criminal organisation in Brigham. What definitely isn’t standard is for Miletic’s little gang to go and steal 25 kilos of gear from another gang because they didn’t know what to do without their boss and then one of the kids ending up shot – in the middle of the day, horrifying the whole city – for their trouble! You were meant to be looking after that area of the city, Aleksandar.”

“I know, boss,” Aleksandar said. “And I will make this right. I will deal with it, the guys who shot the kid will be dealt with immediately. I should have kept a tighter rein on things once we knew of Miletic’s arrest. There was nobody keeping things right. I should have prevented it.”

“What is worse,” Stenko continued, ignoring Aleksandar’s admission. “Is that we have allowed Miletic to be arrested and put behind bars without getting to him first. He could be there, singing like a fucking canary, telling them all sorts to try and get himself a lighter sentence. There’s a reason why we’ve been getting rid of anybody if we think they’re compromised, or sending them back to Mytanija to be dealt with. It’s a complete mess.”

“Miletic wouldn’t know anything important, boss.” Aleksandar protested.

“He’d know enough!” Stenko yelled, slamming his fist on the table and causing an ashtray to jump into the air for a second, crashing back against the wooden table and the noise reverberating around the room. “He could tell them how his gang operate, how he is supplied, how you interact with him and the cops could extrapolate from that! He could be putting us all in danger!”

This caused some of the other men in the room, still whilst Stenko’s ire was focussed on Aleksandar, to squirm in their seats. The threat of imprisonment, or of their money or power being diluted, gnawing at them. They had failed in their most basic duty, to protect the integrity of the operation, something which Stenko had always underlined as being of the utmost importance.

“Fucking Miletic,” Stenko muttered. “A bloody street thug. We need to make sure that the family of the kid who was shot are looked after. We can’t have a bereaved mother going to the media and calling for our heads.”

“I will see to it boss.” Aleksandar said, his voice rising in pitch, completely incongruent with his large frame.

“Perhaps even more worryingly,” Stenko’s eyes darted around the room, a predator assessing his prey. “There are rumours that a journalist, a famous one, Elena Katalenic, has been snooping around the city and could be looking into our activities. She’s been spotted speaking to a lot of women involved in helping prostitutes out of the business and the like. Put two and two together, right? She’s also been joined by this community activist girl, the one who has given speeches on hard drugs being sold into Mytanar communities in the past. It’s a fucking mess, all of this happening whilst those two are around.”

Stenko looked around the room coldly. Some of these men had done terrible things in his name. Murdered people leaving wives and kids without husbands and fathers. Kidnappings, shootings, extortion, you name it. They had grown Stenko’s bank balance exponentially, hidden beneath the complex web of trusts, shell companies and loans, of course. They had also made themselves rich, too, but it had become clear that that had made some of them lazy.

“And nobody has managed to get into Ilija Leskovar’s campaign, either, have they?” Stenko smirked, although it was clear that he was neither in a good mood nor found it particularly funny. “A campaign which could make a Mytanar-Euran the MP for Brigham Manufactory and nobody has bothered to infiltrate is camp and try to turn him to our cause, to ensure that he serves our aims if he does have some power in this city… Useless.”

Some of those in the room exchanged guilty glances. They had made overtures about Leskovar, but it appeared that he was squeaky clean, he would be an impossible nut to crack. Stenko’s anger was understandable, but if someone was determined to remain outside of their control, they couldn’t do too much about it. His anger threatened to consume them all.

“Look, I entrusted you with the control of this city, but you have proven yourselves to be incapable of executing the necessary tasks without me guiding you every step over the past few months.” His words dripped with venom. “I have to make an example here, to show that you must make things right from here. We draw a line in the sand and move forward. We do so immediately and we right the wrongs of the past couple of days and of the past few months. We must regain control.”

A hooded man entered the room, causing one or two of those seated to reach for their pockets, for something which might prevent what was to come, but nobody acted upon it. A split-second later and Aleksandar felt something cold and unyielding wrap around his throat. He was being garrotted by the hooded man. Panic surged within him as the realisation dawned and, despite struggling, it wasn’t long before he succumbed to his fate, a faint gurgle and splutter and a rattle later and he fell to the floor. His life was extinguished. The price of failure.

The room fell into an eerie silence. Stenko’s lieutenants remained frozen, aghast at the sudden turn of events. Zvonimir Stenko, his anger momentarily sated by the brutal execution, sat in the darkness and contemplated the grim reality of his empire potentially unravelling.

“Make this right.” He said, before standing up and sweeping out of the room, hooded man in tow.

Brigham’s underbelly trembled in anticipation of the storm that was about to break.
