(Just make sure you RP him as an independent character though and not as a Long.2)

He won't. In fact, he probably hates Long's guts, for being a Southern populist. But he'd much rather endorse him than a moderate or centrist.

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Azek
Character Name: Darla Cather
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 48
Character Date of Birth: January 7th, 1912
Character Position/Role/Job: War correspondent for TIME Magazine (1957-), novelist and part-time columnist at Life Magazine (1952-1957), political reporter for The Washington Post (1946-1952), war correspondent for the Associated Press (1942-1945), journalist for The Chicago Daily News (1937-1942), field investigator for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (1933-1936)
Character Country/State of Birth: Iowa
Character State of Residence: She splits her time between New York City and Washington, D.C. when she isn't abroad
Character Party Affiliation: Democratic
Faceclaim: Katharine Hepburn
Main Strengths:

Glass Ceiling Breaker - Darla was the first ever woman war correspondent in America, and has been breaking barriers ever since. With a more liberal crowd, this has gained her the image of someone who is willing to challenge norms and powerful people—particularly powerful men. It has also made her one of the most (in)famous journalists in the country, giving her a significant edge on name recognition if she ever wants to dip her toes into politics.

Are We Going to be Friends? Who doesn't Darla know? Given her job first in the government, then as a political journalist, and now as one of the most reputed reporters in the country, she has developed deep connections and sources on Capitol Hill. This means she has a fair share of friends and probably an even greater share of enemies, but her access is unparalleled in the journalism world. Harry Hopkins, FDR's Secretary of Commerce, was her godfather, and the networks didn't end there.

Who Doesn't Like a Pretty Face? 'Nuff said.

Main Weaknesses:

An "Uppity Gal" - It's hard to be a woman in journalism; Darla was one of just two accredited female US Army war correspondents at the start of America's involvement in the Pacific War, and has been facing obstacles due to her sex for her entire career. Now that she has private political ambitions and is one of the most powerful journalists in the country (given that she exposed many of the war crimes being committed in Free France), her identity as a woman certainly doesn't gain her any additional respect. Moreover, her outspoken feminism is not a positive for the time.

...An Uppity Gal of "Poor Character" - As is common for the time, Darla has to face the double standard of public scrutiny when it comes to her romantic and personal life. She has been involved with many men, famous or otherwise, and many seem to believe that she uses her flirtatious personality for journalistic information. She had a long and very public romantic involvement with Ernest Hemingway, and was rumored to have seduced everyone from the Speaker of the House to the Vice President. Needless to say, her rumored sexual life—and her lack of a traditional family life (a husband but no children) doesn't help her with a far more conservative-minded public.

Rumored Hysteria - There have been reports of Darla suffering from extreme mood swings and outbursts in private, although these have apparently been rare. Nevertheless, being a "hysterical woman" never helps one's reputation.

Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)

Darla Cather was born in 1912 on a homestead in Poweshiek County near Grinnell, Iowa. Her father was a close childhood friend of Harry Hopkins, who was her godfather and a student at Grinnell College along with several peers who would later go on to become New Deal administrators in the Roosevelt administration. Her family were strong Democrats, a position that was only strengthened as the Depression began during the Hoover presidency. Her mother was also a vocal suffragist, and her father was similarly liberal-minded for the time. Thus Darla never grew up in a household where her gender was viewed as inherent obstacle to her realizing her dreams.

In school, she was a slightly above-average student, but truly excelled in writing: Darla became the first girl Editor-in-Chief of her school paper—an early foray into being a female pioneer and a journalist. She enrolled in Barnard College in 1930. Her godfather Harry Hopkins, who had worked in New York City social work for many years and was now executive director of FDR's Temporary Emergency Relief Administration (TERA), became even more of a mentor to Darla while she was a student at Barnard. In 1933 when he was appointed head of the Civil Works Administration, and a few months after, head of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), Hopkins encouraged Darla to follow him into the federal government and offered her a job as a field investigator for FERA, given her interest in journalism. Darla readily agreed, dropping out of college to pursue her dream at only 21 years old.

She had the opportunity to meet the President and the First Lady on several occasions; Eleanor Roosevelt was particularly impressed by young Darla's independent spirit, and continued her practice of encouraging young female change-makers. During her time traveling the country and reporting on the real-life effects of the Depression at the micro-level, Darla also befriended photographer Dorothea Lange, whose photos of the Depression would really publicize the extreme poverty and inequality of the U.S. Darla also contributed to this campaign, writing official government reports about the hungry and the homeless that would become the standard of information about the Depression. In 1936 she also started writing a collection of short stories based on her experiences called The Way of the Worthy, which would be published a year later with the help of Mrs. Roosevelt. Darla saw herself as inheriting the tradition of muckrakers like Jacob Riis, Lincoln Steffens, and Ida B. Wells (her biggest idol), who were all journalists that also pushed sociopolitical reform. Frances Perkins, FDR's labor secretary, was also one of her big idols and mentors at the time.

FERA closed at the end of 1936, and Darla was in search for a job. She took a brief break to go on a family vacation to Key West, Florida, where she met Ernest Hemingway at a party. The two soon began a year-long affair, with Ernest coaxing Darla into following him to Spain to report on the Spanish Civil War for a few months. When the young woman finally grew homesick, Hemingway pulled some strings from his old connections in Chicago to land her a permanent job at the Chicago Daily News. She moved back to America while he stayed in Spain, and the distance soon ended their relationship. As a reporter in Chicago, she reported extensively on mob activity, including the assassination of city attorney Edward O'Hare (Darla would later publish a widely-read article suggesting that Chicago's airport be renamed after O'Hare's son, an ace pilot for the Navy and Medal of Honor recipient; her suggestion was eventually made reality). She even had a few undercover romantic trysts with Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik, one of the Chicago Outfit's top political "greasers," financial advisors, and legal counsels. She extracted quite a bit of casual information about political connections and bribery, and later published it in the papers. It was one of her most dangerous assignments, and by 1942 Darla decided to quit the paper and leave Chicago, fearing that the mob would retaliate against her.

She had built up enough local fame and credibility to be hired by the Associated Press in 1942, where her first assignment was in Washington, D.C. covering the passage of a bill establishing the Women's Army Corps (WACs). She then requested to follow the first WAC contingent overseas; when the AP approved her request, Darla became the first accredited female war correspondent in the history of the U.S. She followed the WACs to Japan, where she faced a hostile work environment from male colleagues that disliked her work. They often carelessly assigned her to extremely dangerous bombing zones. The flip side of this was that her journalistic work became even more dramatic; she began work on her second book, a war novel called Banshee Days; it was published in 1945, but was not as well received as her first book.

She returned to America after the war ended as one of the most widely-read and renowned war journalists in the country, and she was also known in some circles for her novels. She got a job as a political reporter for The Washington Post, where she would not only proceed to publish very well-researched articles, but also had affairs with several old politicians, including Republican House Speaker Joseph Martin in 1946, Senate Majority Leader Robert A. Taft in 1947, and Undersecretary of State Dean Acheson (who later ascended to Secretary of State) in 1948. All of these men held political views completely opposite to those of Darla, but she maintained secret relationships with them mostly to extract political information about legislative dealings and foreign policy meetings. Most of these men were aware of this, but often couldn’t resist Darla’s “persuasive” character. In 1950 she finally settled down and married George F. Ellis, a contributing editor at the Post.

Darla resigned from the Post in 1952 and took a few years off to focus fully on her fiction writing. To make money she published a few reviews, opinion articles, and short stories in Life Magazine. She published one novel in those five years, Men and Fritters, which was about the troubled family life of a Pacific War veteran. The book was a bestseller and is considered her best work of fiction.

In 1957, Darla was particularly outraged at the Jackson administration for getting involved in another foreign war, and so she rejoined the world of journalism to work as a war correspondent for TIME Magazine. She was assigned to report on battles in Algeria and Senegal, and during this time she was rumored to have suffered from a few mental breakdowns after dinner parties with officials in Algeria. After the NYT captured the scoop of the decade with leaked photos of a massacre by Americans in Senegal, Darla contributed the most in-depth reporting of the war crimes committed by American troops there; her feature articles on the crisis in Senegal became known as the most damning reporting on the war yet. She has also become increasingly outspoken about issues other than the war in Free France; she has become one of the few American journalists to publish intense criticism of apartheid South Africa, and she has drawn parallels between the situation there and the state of the Jim Crow South, which she also openly detests.

She now mulls remaining in Free France or returning to America as the 1960 elections will surely have some of the most intriguing political events in U.S. history…

Other Info: Speaks some basic Japanese from her time during the Pacific War, and speaks very proficient French since her school days. Married to newspaper editor at the Washington Post. No children. Eyeing a potential entry into politics, or at least an increased role in swinging political outcomes.

The Dixiecrats and conservatives who want overt white supremacy don't want the type of centralized authority that intervenes into the economy that fascists do.

If there was a strong external communist threat to bins them together, maybe fascists could play a sustained leading role.

Otherwise they just represent an attractive target for Dixiecrats, southern populists or far-right opportunists like Natalie to attack and look better.

Fair enough I suppose, but in Joyner's app, the Dixiecrats did approach him and his fascists for a political alliance and that allowed him to jumpstart his political career and infiltrate conservative rhetoric with fascist messages. Hence why he is the leading figure of the far right coalition. Natalie can try to take him down from within or try to dismantle the coalition.

It's not anti communism that is binding the coalition, its resisting the Civil Rights Movement. Joyner is attempting to form a reactionary movement through the Dixiecrats and the ANV.

If an openly Nazi-aligned dixiecrat party tried running against a civil rights status quo democratic party in the south, its probable that the dixiecrats could lose to the democrat and even lose to the republican outside of the deep south. They can't resist the civil rights movement with a coalition that might even have difficulty holding on to the south, nevermind have any hope of winning outside of it.

Yes, same as irl. As detailed in the Factbook:

"In the Eastern Territories, in preparation for the planned Germanic colonization of the region, the Slavic population suffered deportations east of the Ural Mountains at best or mass extermination in concentration camps at worst."

"But things turned sour in the latter half of the 1940s. A combination of gross economic mismanagement - which led to the Recession of 1948 - and the immense costs of the Generalplan Ost (Master Plan for the East) undermined Hitler's rule and the popularity of the Nazi Party. "

" Albert Speer, Minister of Industry and Production, was appointed Chancellor. Under his reformist leadership, the program of deportation and extermination of the Slavic populations stopped. Instead, the Slavs were to be used extensively as slave labor to shore up the failing German economy. The plan worked; the sweat, blood, and tears of slaves pulled the Reich out of the recession in 1950."

The reason the US never joined the European theater of war was that Hitler never declared war on the United States:

"December 8, 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt expected a German declaration of war. But Hitler sold out his Japanese allies, realizing that while the average American was furious with the Japanese who had attacked them, they were unlikely to support a war in Europe against Germany."

The American public was weary of getting involved in a bloody war in Europe and instead wanted revenge for the Japanese attack. Hence the US focused on Japan exclusively. After the Japanese were defeated, a war in Europe wasn't considered because it would be an incredible bloody enterprise with both the USSR and the British defeated. And the Germans eventually acquired nuclear weapons, meaning that direct war had to be avoided due to MAD doctrine.

He is able to see connections where other men see nothing and seems able to make complex deductions about someone or something from seemingly simple and quick observations. He is also very good at realizing when people lie from their facial and bodily expressions, and he can use this to his advantage.

Main Weaknesses:

Hated by police department: Most colleagues call him "that crazy SOB". His partners are terrified of him, and his captain regularly reprimands him and occasionally takes disciplinary actions against him. The only reason Jim remains a cop is that he closes more cases than all other detectives combined.

Hated by criminals: His rough attitude and semi-celebrity local status have made him hated by the criminal world of Chicago, and many wish to see him gone. Assassination attempts on Jim are regular and he is the #1 target of the underworld.

Clean in a corrupt world: Jim refuses bribes. He refuses to shake hands with politicians. He refuses to play nice. This has made him a hated man, and a target of journalists as well who decry him as a "jackbooted thug" and "everything that is wrong with the American police system".

Biography:

Jimmy ‘Jim’ Wilson was born in 1925 to a middle-class family. His father was a cop in the Chicago Police Department while his mother was a housewife. Jim would get in fistfights with various bullies during his youth, despite the best attempts of his father to keep him out of trouble. Even from that young age, he hated lawbreakers and those who abused their power to victimize the weak and helpless.

When he became eighteen, he attended the Department of Criminology, Law and Justice at UIC. His grades were sufficiently good, though he gained a reputation as a brawler. After graduating, he joined the Chicago Police Training Division. He learned how to search a crime scene, how to interrogate people, and much more.

For two years, Jim was a patrolman. He gained several commendations for catching thieves and drug-dealers, though his rough attitude also got him stern warnings from his captain. In one occasion, when a group of men holding hostages in a liquor store demanded a getaway car, Jim delivered one: he drove the car through the store's plate glass window and proceeded to shoot the robbers. Jim also found himself becoming increasingly disillusioned with the department: he saw a lot of bribes, some even handed right in front of him. In one occasion, he saw his Captain take a bribe from some attorney to let a guy out of his lockup. This enraged him, and made him even more willing to cross lines and legal boundaries to get the ‘bad guys’.

In 1951, Jim was made a detective at the homicide department. With his combination of natural charisma, roughing up suspects, playing dirty, and his investigative skills, he would solve dozen of murder cases (including a serial killer who wound strangle blonde women, a prominent businessman who had murdered his wife, another businessman who had set fire on his shop to get insurance money but accidentally murdered an employee by doing so, etch). This earned him a reputation as a detective genius - and comparisons to Sherlock Holmes - but Jim's methods and erratic behavior would also mean that most in his department distrusted him at best or outright hated him.

Jim crossed even further the legal boundaries when investigating the case of a serial killer who would abduct and murder young girls. He was certain who the murderer was but couldn't prove it. When he learned that another girl had been abducted, he roughed up the man in order to give the location of the girl, even shooting him in the leg. The man revealed where the girl was – she was terrified but unharmed – but Jim was later informed by the District Attorney that due to numerous civil rights violations much of the evidence against the serial killer was inadmissible and he would be released without charge.

This was the straw that broke the camel's back: Jim now has lost all trust in civil institutions and is willing to undertake whatever actions are necessary – even if illegal – to get justice.

Other Info:

His fiancé, Ellie, was killed in a bomb attack a year ago. Jim has still not found out who the assassin was.

I believe I have also reviewed all apps.

If I missed adding someone to the character roster or reviewing an app, feel free to remind me about it. Tomorrow, I will be launching the IC. As I mentioned in an earlier post, it will also include some events for players to react to. I will also be creating a Congress thread tomorrow for legislative action. :)

Thanks. Fixed it. :)

He would probably dislike him. Jackson does not think highly of those in the entertainment industry and Dinsey is somewhat to his right economically. Publicly though he would treat him with respect. Jackson tries to avoid attacking fellow Republicans.

Disney probably voted for Jackson for his economic policies but was disappointed that it wasn't core to the free market principles.

Jackson may not like Disney but I'm sure that he'll be suspicious as heck about Club 33
