===Host Bid Cutoff===

Host Bid Results
A total of 5 teams submitted the form to host some of the group stage matches at their home ground. They were from Valentine Z, Trolleborg, Græntfjall, Tjorl and Diarcesia, in order of submission.

Group A: None of the nations from Group A submitted a bid. As such, all matches will default to play in Poafmersia, with the exact location revealed when the PFBA releases their IC information pamphlet.

Group B: Excluding the overall hosts Poafmersia, the group had one bid from member nation Tjorl. Therefore, it was decided that Tjorl to hold the first 6 matchdays of the group stage, and Poafmersia the remaining 5.

Group C: The group had 2 bids from member nations Valentine Z and Trolleborg. As such, it was decided that Valentine Z will host the first 5 matchdays and Trolleborg the last 5, with Matchday 6 held concurrently in both nations. (Hannasea vs Geektopia, Juvencus vs Drawkland, and Valentine Z vs Gran Saguaro in Valentine Z; Trolleborg vs Southwest Eastnorth, and United Adaikes vs HUElavia in Trolleborg for Matchday 6)

Group D: The group had 2 bids from member nations Græntfjall and Diarcesia. As such, it was decided that Diarcesia will host the first 5 matchdays and Græntfjall the last 5, with Matchday 6 held concurrently in both nations. Nova Anglicana vs Islerum, and Sky Reavers vs Magnecia in Græntfjall; Macbon vs Chromatika, Srednjaci vs Cardenao, and Qasden vs Diarcesia in Diarcesia)

Notes:
- We almost always play a 1-3-1 zone defense. It works well with this team, which has lots of size, and is getting faster, especially at guard. Situationally, we will switch to man to man or a box and 1 if the other team's star player is hot, but the 1-3-1 is the base.
- This team is built very different from past teams. They space the floor much better, they have spread the floor with a lot of players who can hit jumpers, especially three pointers. They also like to play fast.
- This team will run at almost any chance they get. While rebounding, especially on defense, is the team's weakest link, when they do get a rebound, they are able to push the ball, and so quickly.
- For the group stages, this team's rotation runs 12 deep, as Laboto will do his best to get all 12 players into the game for every single group stage game. However, they will almost certainly shorten the rotation to 8-9 players come the knockout stages. The rotation shrinks in the knockout stages, and in knockout games and other must wins, Laboto is willing to play his two young star players(Khoza and Abonyo) extremely heavy minutes (35+).

Recent History
This is their second appearance at the IBCs after an especially turbulent period surrounding the men's national basketball team. The team reached never before seen heights in this sport, winning 4 titles in a row- an accomplishment that has never been matched in any of the Grand Slam competitions (IBCs, WCoH, WC, World Bowl, WBC). 5 finals in a row, and obviously all of those championships, meant success was the name of the game. But of course, with success comes egos, and with the growth of the financial pot comes issues on how to split it. For financial reasons, and many others, players went on strike after IBC 33- sparked when the Olympic Committee, already facing a myriad of issues, tried to force NT players to play at home. They came back at IBC 36, and are trying to get back to previously achieved heights.

When legendary head coach Isaiah Lavaga decided to leave for club basketball in Quebec rather than strike-break and lead a squad of replacement players to IBC 34, the Banijan men's basketball team could not even send a delegation to the tournament- a stunning fall. They did not resolve the issue in time for IBC 35 either, as players and the Olympic Committee seemed to be in a never-ending standoff over the national team. But finally, shortly before the last Olympiad in the Twin Cities, the players and the Olympic Committee were finally able to reach an agreement.

Nearly half a decade of striking. The senior NT was finally back in the fold. The Olympics were good- falling to Hannasea in the semifinals, and earning a bronze medal, the second ever medal the men's basketball team has ever earned at the Olympiad. And hopes were raised after the AOBCs just went like old times, with Banija cruising to their third regional title.

Oscar Laboto, the new head coach, urged caution with this team. "This ain't the same team we had back in the day." He told reporters. "The IBCs are an entirely different beast. We're back at the bottom of the totem pole, and we're gonna take some real lumps. Fans will need to be patient." Indeed, he told reporters it would be 2 or 3 cycles before the team could legitimately be considered contenders- for now, despite their history, simply reaching the knockout stages would be performing 'beyond expectations'.

Last time, it felt as though we failed our homeland. It was the first time in a long time that we felt like we were back to where we were a long time ago, a scrappy team that may be one run away from potential greatness, and while we did make the playoffs two years ago and won a game in fact, Valanora did us in at the Round of 16 and that caused us to...second guess our supposed greatness as a basketball program. Bao Zhou spoke of the regret he had that he couldn't "do the job" 2 years ago and how Adamo Zamenhofo, Nikos Papaloukas and David Alberto all left without a final hurrah to their careers. Now, the Hoops-Jagaurs is ranked #8 in the multiverse and have restocked with Edmund Williamson, Fanis Papaloukas and Pedro Alavez now involved in an old-boys starting 5 and a 10-game schedule that will certainly test the depth of this roster to its limits. Things are going to be tough, no doubt about that, but can we overcome all the obstacles to make it through to the Top 4 and the playoffs beyond? Only time will tell...

Chromatika's Group Stage Opponents

MD1: (28) Magnecia
One of the up and comers in the basketball scene, Magnecia will need to get an upset to grab the top four berth; with Qasden only one spot ahead of them in rankings, it's definitely possible. Expect the Penguins to come out strong and try to beat down an up-and-comer in the first matchday. How Shaddon-Ysenov comes out will also be a point of interest - she is what's needed for this team to get places, as the youngster continues to perform up to level.

MD2: (UR) Iserum
If the Penguins lose in Game 1, this will be a perfect bounce-back game; otherwise, it's a good game to build up momentum before the clashes against Græntfjall and Nova Anglicana. The bench may come into play in the second half if things get out of hand.

MD3: (11) Græntfjall
A newfound rivalry has been brewing between Chromatika and Græntfjall in basketball, and as a battle between the second and third seeds in the group this early, it'll set the tone of the game. Chromatika needs to win one of the matches against Græntfjall or Nova Anglicana to have a shot at maintaining a top two spot in the group, and Græntfjall will be the easier match to take over. This is a game where Lia Xiu will have to take over.

MD4: (1) Nova Anglicana
The top ranked team in the world - and the Penguins will get a crack at them. This will be hard - probably the one expected loss in the Group Stage - but to see just how good this team can be, this will be a good litmus test.

MD5: (UR) Sky Reavers
A break between the matches against the top two teams in the group and games against the riffraff, Sky Reavers will be a good resting game for the Penguins.

MD6: (49) Macbon
Then, things turn back to Macbon. The first of five matches to close out the Group Stage - and a good trend setter.

MD7: (41) Srednjaci
Penguins can't slow down against the teams in the forties in terms of rankings. Drop too many of them, and they will falter. Srednjaci is a name that's rising all through multiple sports.

MD8: (20) Qasden
A name that can't be ignored in basketball, the Penguins will have to keep on pace to take on Qasden.

MD9: (49) Darcesia
Hopefully by now, the Penguins will have clinched a playoff berth. For a top two berth, though?

MD10: (29) Cardenao
The Penguins end with Cardenao before a BYE where they get to watch how everyone else ends.

INDIE NATIONS HEADLINE IBC GROUP C ALONGSIDE DRAWKLAND
This article was published in a print newspaper, where it was read by approximately 6 people

The International Basketball Championships, in their 37th edition, are nearly upon us. Drawkland enters their nineteenth IBC this cycle, hoping to break out of the doldrums of mediocrity that has haunted the Net Corps since IBC 30. Ranked 14th in the world and entering this tournament's Group C from pot three, it will surely be an uphill battle.

Worries about team performance aside, this abnormally large 11-team group promises to provide exciting action on the hardwood from end to end. Most notable is the large amount of Independent representatives in this group. The non-soccer tournaments of the multiverse are usually less confined to the notions of dominance from the traditional "Big Three" or Four or Five, with a majority of participants often hailing from outside these so-called sporting regions. Still, Group C is notable in that over half the group contains big names from the IAC, the official "regional" soccer tournament for non-sporting regions. Drawkland, Valentine Z, Juvencus, and Trolleborg are all mainstays of recent IACs, and this is just from the top half of the group. HUElavia, Geektopia, and United Adaikes, while not basketball powerhouses, are also IAC participants. There isn't a whole lot of overlap in fanbases between soccer and basketball, but we expect there to be more interest than usual in these matches.

The true "headliner" of the group, 3rd-ranked Hannasea, hails from Esportiva. This puts a damper on the indie party in Group C, but all of the pot one nations are located in sporting regions regardless. Even so, Hannasea is not often talked about as one of the more notable Esportivan nations. Most Drawkians will dislike Hannasea's presence in this group for purely selfish reasons: two of Drawkland's previous three playoff eliminations have come at the hands of the Sardines. Both games were close, but there's sure to be bad blood in that matchup.

Poafmersia will host the playoffs and eventual championship of this edition, in addition to a couple groups. Thanks to bidding interest from multiple Group C participants, the only way for the Net Corps to reach Poafmersia will be qualifying for the playoffs. With four playoffs spots for the taking and Drawkland being the third-best team in the group, the Net Corps holds the inside track. This group is sure to be competitive, and we all know there are no guarantees. The qualifying schedule is long by IBC standards, lasting 10 matchdays. This is advantageous for the higher-ranked teams as it's likely enough games for regression to the mean to occur; upsets from low-ranked teams won't be as devastating. It presents another issue though, turning this group stage into more of an endurance test. Teams will have to be playing at a high level for twice as many games as last cycle, for instance.

With two of Group C's participants successfully bidding to host the group stage, the schedule will be split into two halves. The first half, hosted in Valentine Z, is being viewed as an extended warm-up for the Net Corps in particular. Drawkland will take on United Adaikes (45), HUElavia (41), Southwest Eastnorth (33), Gran Saguaro (UR), and Geektopia (UR) in that order, ending their stay in Valentine Z with the highly anticipated return of the Revoda Sea Rivalry against Juvencus (17). This finale of the first half will be a tone setter for the rest of the campaign as the Corps and fans will move to Trolleborg for the conclusion of the group stage. This transition could not come at a better time. Drawkland faces Dod Rava (49) in their first game in Trolleborg, which is followed by a bye matchday. This will prove crucial to the Corps' cause, as the final three matches on the schedule are against Hannasea (3), Valentine Z (9), and the hosting Trolleborg (22).

All of Drawkland's easy matches, save for the Valentine Z finale against Juvencus, come before the bye. Ideally, the Corps should have fewer than 2 losses at this point. The bye is in a perfect spot for the team to regroup and prepare for the gauntlet of playoff contenders to finish the stage. It is highly likely that each of those games will have huge playoff connotations, both for qualification and seed positions. From a fan standpoint, this schedule is almost perfect.

The question on every Corps fan's mind is: what can this team accomplish? The last few cycles have shown sparks of greatness in this still-developing new generation of Net Corps players. Regardless, they haven't been able to make a signature deep run to put Drawkland back in the forefront of the professional basketball scene. This team is good enough to make it into the playoffs and even win a couple games, but so far they haven't shown the ability to finish against the big-name contenders. The buzzsaws, if you will. This only serves to remind Drawkland fans that the Net Corps hasn't been in the top 10 of the rankings since the playoff miss in IBC 33, the lowest point in Drawkland's IBC history. The Net Corps hasn't played like a top ten team since then, and everybody knows it. It would take something unexpected for the Corps to return to such heights.

If there's any upside to this situation, fans will point to IBC 25. The Net Corps had reached five consecutive Rounds of 16, only to lose in all of them. It was starting to feel like the Drawkian basketball scene wasn't strong enough to be a real contender. Out of nowhere, the Corps rattled off an unprecedented run to the championship game, where they comfortably won the title over former co-hosts in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. If any nation has the ability to make a shocking run happen, it's Drawkland. There's a long road to travel before they get to that point, though.

Part 1

The Santa Teresa meeting yielded a long list of decisions, intentions, and ideas. Not a lot of time had passed since then, but in terms of months where years happen versus months where days happen, this was definitely one of the former. Many territories joined the Constellation - a collective noun for nations in free association with Ko-oren. Free assocation? Well, in most cases, it wasn't completely free. In return for a capable administration, financial stability, and tackling of corruption, Marten Zuidveld's ministry of Territorial Interests did ask - demand - payment. The Constellation is a great vessel to promote the interests of meritocracy worldwide, to show it's an alternative to democracy without falling into a trap of authoritarianism and autocracy.

Quite a bit of time was allocated to the delegation from Irithoren, a small Esportivan nation that had long exemplified Ko-orenite values even before the Constellation days.

Zeina Nayla Fizairdah, finally appointed governor of Irithoren on behalf of Ko-oren, disembarked from the ferry that brought her to Santa Teresa from Katashi after arriving at the Yoshiman airport a few hours prior. On the ferry, scheduled specifically for Constellation heads of state, she waited for the Arhoreni representative. She sipped her coffee, which she insisted was to be taken from Irithoren through Ko-orenite customs, and she realised it made her seem much more demanding than what was actually the case.

"Excuse me, apologies!" a man with a wide smile stepped on board. Zeina recognised the shirt - or rather, the collar - as Arhoreni, and it must have been obvious that that was her tell for the man being from there. "Do you like the shirt? I can recommend a fantastic tailor in Chagore back home!" he was in oddly high spirits for someone just coming off of an interregional flight. But, she had to admit, it was the most human and most welcoming thing that happened to her since the landing.

"Oh, I'd love to visit Arhoren, and Chagore in particular. I assume you must be mister Thapaliya, then?"

"Certainly!"

"I'm Zeina Nayla Fizairdah, representative from Irithoren."

"Ah, the coffee gave it away, I'm sorry. I have to ask - is there any way I could get my hands on some? I had the pleasure of tasting it ages ago and I'm afraid the Arhoreni product doesn't suffice since then."

"We brought some in, I'll have my staff look for it. Maybe we can't get to it until Santa Teresa, though."

"Wonderful, thank you!"

Thapaliya - his first name escaped her for now, and she hoped he'd at least mention his first name in the encounter - had a great energy to jolt her awake after a long flight, but she couldn't exactly match it. In fact, she mostly focused on the headache that started sometime mid-flight. Rubbing her temples while the Arhoreni delegation was busy talking amongst themselves, the captain poked his head below deck. "Just letting you know we're about to take off, so we're going to make some noise. I'll come down after we've cleared the harbour. Enjoy yourselves for now!" he said, in a well-enunciated Yoshiman-Gehrennan accent, that was very easy on the ears. 'At least he spoke slowly', she thought to herself, but it surprised her how easily she could understand Gehrennan after the complete lack of practice in Irithoren. She studied in a Ko-orenite capital and picked up Gehrennan then, thinking it useful for a political career later on, especially as Irithoren was still closely tied to Ko-oren.

Decades later, it was pretty handy after all.

Posted on the In Brief section of the GS SuperSports+ website because the forum ate the first two articles that were actually relevant to basketball and no one cares anyway.

Prime Minister accuses Montaña Verde of “complicity” in narcotrafficking

Mere minutes after news breaking of a massive oil find in Montaña Verde, Prime Minister Kaija Michaelsdóttir announced a deescalation of conflict in Jabal Akhdar. “In this War On Terror we must be vigilant, and concern that is growing that Montaña Verde is, um,” said the Prime Minister, before checking her notes. “Funding Islamist terrorism? Hmm, no. Bioweapons? Eh, seems a stretch. Ooh, narcotrafficking! Wait, is this thing on!?” She went on to criticize the Verdean government’s “accommodation” of narcotraficantes and said that she would not allow cocaine to “flood Græntfjall’s ports, streets, and schools”. The newly tough-on-drugs tone marks an abrupt shift from a Prime Minister who, in opposition, campaigned for drug legalization, but she said that “compelling” intelligence reports from the Director of Dodgy Dossiers at the GIB had convinced her “that there really is a lot of oil, I mean drugs, out there we should be worried about”. She also extended an offer to Verdean Presidente Jazmin Hurtado Santángel to “assist in ongoing coca eradication programs”, with reports of elements of the Second Fleet leaving the Vilitan Bay to track across the Verdean Ocean. Presidente Santángel reiterated her opposition to “both the destructive impact of cartels and also of neoliberal conquistadors”.

Butterfly City Mercury
One year on, Hannasea's Espo-riment reports good results

The Hannasean Federation's adoption of the Espo failed to send shock waves through the financial system, resulted in little disruption to daily life, and has seen a 9% increase in tourist revenue, says a new joint report from the Tea Ministry and Federation Central Bank. The report's lead author, Deputy Minister for Green Tea Kara Gallagher, states in her introduction: "The adoption of the Espo has been highly successful, reducing transactional costs. Rather than weakening Hannasea's reputation for financial stability, it has enhanced it, showing that even with the adoption of the new regional currency Hannasea's bond issues remain trusted safe harbor assets." Though the report did note difficulties in acquiring sufficient physical Espo banknotes and coins, with most Hannasean daily transactions done electronically, there has been "minimal disruption to daily life".

Politically, the positive reception to the Espo is seen as a blow to both the governing Conservative Party, whose membership divided on the question of Espo membership, and far-right Hannasean People's Party, who were visible in the "Es-no" campaign. Emily Dreyfuss, the party's sole MAE, romantically linked with basketball star Tom Powell, faced questions about the Espo during her recent visit to Valentine Z, where games in the IBC37 will be played. "I am not ready to give up my guild coins," she said defiantly, before admitting that she had "come around" to using Espos in daily life. She warned of dire consequences, though, should developing nations or those facing economic turbulence be admitted to the currency union. "We need to maintain the purity of the currency union," she said, before her boyfriend distracted reporters by sinking a 70 footer no-scope 360.

GRAN SAGUARO NATIONAL TEAM
EQUIPO NACIONAL DE BALONCESTO GRAN SAGUARO

*

OVERVIEW

Básquetbol is either the second- or third-most popular sport in Gran Saguaro, depending on where you are and who you ask — in some urban cities on the southern coast, the game is even more widely followed than football. Gran Saguaro's highest basketball governing body is the SaguAiro™ LigaDUNK, a haphazardly-run organization with an official 60-game season in the winter and an assortment of loosely-planned "friendlies" throughout the rest of the year, comprised of eighteen franchised teams that frequently rotate in and out of existence (often, if an owner wants to sell a LigaDUNK team and cannot get what they paid for it, they will "yard sale" the nickname*, players, court, trademark, color scheme, logo, and local broadcast station affiliate rights to make up their investment. Then, the corporate sponsor will often find a new team, usually the franchise being created to take up the newly open spot — which means that sponsors often stay in the LigaDUNK far longer than the average team does, and some teams can even amass a collection of color schemes and broadcast affiliates as a result of such yard sales — the San Armando Altos, for example, have seven "exclusive" local broadcasters). Basketball is far more popular among young people than the old — a good sign for its future in Gran Saguaro.

For the first time, Gran Saguaro is creating a national basketball team (like most Saguareño sports leagues, the LigaDUNK is gender-segregated; which means the squad will be all-male, picked from the more popular mens' division of the ligD — calls to gender-integrate Saguareño basketball have so far fallen on deaf ears, but a coed national team is not unlikely for the future...). The planning sessions, which included every coach in the LigaDUNK, star former players, basketball media figures, government bureaucrats, and a randomly-picked pool of fans, took nearly a year of fraught debate to conclude — in the end, players chosen will be paid around 110,000 pesos per match (roughly 6,000 NSD); merchandising rights were awarded in a raffle exclusively to c.o.n.e.j.o., an upscale designer clothing label; the players' shoes, which they can personalize, have to feature support for a good cause; if the team is eliminated in the group stage, every player will miss the first 15 matches of the regular season; and on-court celebrations cannot be "excessively vulgar". The Sport Ministry gave the players their blessing and personalized neckties in a televised ceremony.

The Saguareño team is quite small, a side effect of the nation's average male height (5'5), so in response the team has had to become quick, coordinated, and accurate to stay competitive. Although, to be honest, it's unknown how competitive they will really be — this is the national team's debut, and a big stage for a big embarrassment to take place on...

TEAM

Head Coach: Gaspar Vicente (Coach of the Encino Papas since 2019; won a Bold Ball in 1998, and a national championship with the Llorarores Altos in 1996, 1998; the Isla Rica Cocos in 1999; and now-defunct Yerba Seals in 2001)
Assistants: Dimi Valdéz, Yolanda Palomo
Kit Boy: Jhony Tejada

STARTERS

#1 | Pedro Kendrick [PG] ( 5'10| 22 y.o. | Trinidad Tigres )
Kendrick is a small, versatile player whose pro fame is only beginning to grow. The Tigres' youngest ever captain, he's known to intently analyze game film and has a reputation for being willing to point out the flaws in other players' game, usually at the worst moments; he's even drawn his own plays, one of which, the "Kendrick Special", won the 2021 championship in overtime against the San Armando Wings. Nevertheless, Kendrick has a well-earned reputation for being both hotheaded and foul-prone, though he insists the two aren't related...

#22 | Dani Curro [SG] ( 6'2 | 29 y.o. | Moab Osos )
Skinny, pale, and blonde, Curro's nickname "Dani Dimes" among the English-speaking Moab fanbase is not an inaccurate one; he has a career free throw percentage of 88.97 in the LigaDUNK (where, admittedly, the lines are closer), and Curro's greatest talents lie in his ability to fire shots on target from anywhere outside the paint. He is a catch-and-shoot player, who relies especially on Judah Tamovalo to set screens. Curro can’t dribble to save his life. Despite living in Moab, Dani Curro can't speak English at all and is known for his drinking.

#13 | Yunus Joaquín [SF] ( 6'5 | 26 y.o. | Moab Osos )
Dani Curro's teammate, Yunus Joaquín was an aspiring baseball player until university, where he was scouted for the basketball team and quickly became a sensation. A good defender and very quick, Joaquín's astronomic rise is accompanied by his growing pop culture presence; he was recently cast in a big-time telenovela as "Fabio", the hearthrob. He is among the tallest on the team (a low bar), and will occasionally play as power forward. Joaquín is uniquely bad at setting screens do to his slight body type, and has a very poor rebound stat.

#0 |(c) Judah Tamovalo [PF] ( 6'10 | 24 y.o. | San Armando Wings )
The only one from the Saguareño team who can hold his own height-wise against other nations' basketball players, Judah Tamovalo's physical presence is only dwarfed by that which he has while on the ball. The son of a LigaDUNK star in the 80s, Samson Tamovalo, Judah may be an even more talented athlete than his father, a two-time MVP. His intelligence, power, size, and speed make him a natural fit for the captain — though it seems the 24-year-old, not known for his maturity, may be a little in over his head. Expect him to occasionally play as center.

#2 | Andrés Omar [C] ( 6'8| 27 y.o. | Vallcarca E.T.s )
The captain of the E.T.s and a natural leader, Omar is certainly not a good perimeter shooter. He is, however, the LigD leader in rebounds and puts up good performances in the paint and on dunks; expect him to "clean up the messes" left behind by the other teammates in the form of sloppy attacks and bad shots, as well as provide an alternate finishing opportunity for plays that go sideways. Omar is prone to weird injuries — he can sustain an awkward fall on his wrist from feet in the air, but might twist an ankle in a routine layup and be out for games.

#3| Lucas Gallo [PG] ( 5'11 | 19 y.o. | Isla Rica Cocos )
#7| Yuri Alvarado [SG] ( 6'1 | 25 y.o. | Encino Papas )
#11| Wahed Abdelhakim [SF] ( 6'6 | 26 y.o. | San Armando Wings)
#9| Mateo Pareja [SF] ( 5'10 | 19 y.o. | San Armando Altos )
#5| Berti Woítec Perez [PF] ( 6'4 | 22 y.o. | Boca Rana Bullfrogs )
#19| Dominico Washington [PF] ( 6'3 | 23 y.o. | Pimería Scorch )
#8 | Inacio Obajiwe [C] (6'6 | 26 y.o. | Palo Duro Burros )

Jessie's Journey Part I

Jessie Courtois was a man on a mission. The sound of his feet slapping against the marble floor echoed off the wood walls and one could hear the pitter patter of lighter feet struggling to keep up with Jessie’s long strides. He felt bad for the much shorter aide, she was all but running to match the former basketball star as he strode to the grand wood door with accents in gold with a seal proudly emblazoned upon it. He knocked on the door as he opened it despite the little aide starting to desperately protest.

The room he entered was much plainer than Jessie thought it would be. Sure it was fancy, with marble and expensive wood, but it wasn’t…It didn’t fit the image he had in his mind of what this particular office might look like. But that wasn’t the point, Jessie was here to make a point and he opened his mouth to launch right into it before realizing where he was and who he was speaking to. In the office of the President, you best pay your respects to The Man.

“Mr. President Mihaly, it’s an honor to finally meet you in person. Thank you for everything you’ve done for our country, and especially what you’ve done for the national basketball team,” Jessie said, reaching his hand out to the most powerful person in Cardenao.

President Mihaly smiled at Jessie, standing up from a desk that was plain in comparison to the marble, gold, and chandeliers and offering his hand in return.

“Welcome Jessie, thanks for coming in. I like what you’ve done with the program, I’m not sure I’ve gotten over the heartbreak from three years ago, getting within 40 minutes of reaching the knockouts in our first go at it!”

“Oh thank you Mr. President–”

President Mihaly interrupted with a wave of his hand, “Please, Jessie, call me Mihaly.”

“Ah…uhh…yes sir Mihaly. I didn’t know you followed the team that closely!”

“Oh really? I was pretty vocal in my support, I even showed up to a game or two. I take Cardenao sports pretty seriously.”

“Oh…….well…you see it’s all just a bit blurry outside of the court, it’s hard for me to see anything outside of my team. It’s my everything sir, and that’s why I’ve requested to meet with you.”

Mihaly motioned for the two of them to sit and they did.

"Not a problem, I get the same way about my work. Now what has led you to my office Mr. Courtois?"

“Well sir, I’ll just say it straight up, I want to establish a professional basketball league.” Jessie Courtois paused for a moment to let that sink in and was relieved to see and emboldened by a sly smile on Mihaly’s face, so he pressed on.

“Yes, the Cardenao Basketball League. I’m not asking for anything other than your backing sir, but I think it’s high time we get basketball into Cardenao. The national team has potential, you and I both know it, and our people are perfect for the game. It’s easy to set up hoops around the country and give those pot smokers something to do instead of just sitting around and fishing all day. My idea is thus.

We start with five teams from five cities. Enough to cover the country but not too many teams so that it becomes hard to oversee. As the league proves its success, growth is carefully managed. We got ten players on the national team, so two to each team to get the star power factor going. I’m going to get funding and sponsorship from a variety of different sources to get in capital that can be used to get things further established. I need to know I can count on you, I need to know I have your backing Mihaly.”

Having said his piece, Courtois took a much needed breath of air and leaned back in his chair. He knew he couldn’t just say ‘hey can you throw the entire weight and checkbook of the country behind my personal vanity project?’ No, just putting the idea in Mihaly’s mind and asking for his blessing would be enough to get the ball rolling, Jessie was confident in that.

“I like it, I like it a lot. You absolutely have my backing and perhaps the government’s support in time. Thanks for stopping by Jessie, I enjoyed our little chat but I’ve got a meeting with the Pyazhnaya diplomat Vyacheslav Sorokin. Hey, good luck in the International Basketball Championship. Islerum first right?”

Jessie was a little taken aback. He was used to being the commanding voice in the room, so to be brushed through this quickly was somewhat jarring. But no matter, it was clear Mihaly was a fan and could certainly be a benefactor in the future if he could put together a more complete league proposal.

“Yessir Mihaly, Islerum up first and I’ll tell you what, the boys are looking up to the challenge, we want to beat the football team and qualify to the major tourney first [laughs] Thank you for the time sir.”

The two stood and shook hands, and Jessie Courtois started to exit the room.

“Good luck in the meeting sir, I hear those folk are really into technology.”

Mihaly looked up and gave Jessie a deep look, almost looking into his soul before easing up with a smile.

“Thank you Jessie, I’ll keep that in mind.”

The door was closed behind Jessie Courtois, who exhaled in relief as a weight was lifted from his shoulders. That feeling lasted seven seconds before an even heavier weight was put right back on.

Now the real work began.

The Dragons had rode their luck last tournament, having learned to play a more defensively responsible style of game that perhaps had them craft some of that luck that had the team bounce back from what had been a truly terrible tournament the cycle before. Thirty-six was hopefully a turning point for the Dragons, a point where they could hopefully have put down the building blocks for the team to move forward and once more reestablish themselves as one of the better teams of the sport. While thirty-five was a disgrace of a tournament for the team in terms of results, it was merely the last in a trend of the team moving downwards, particularly as they seemed most vexxed by the introduction of the two group stage format that had become somewhat popular in the tournament but had definitely seen the decline on the return of results for the team. Trends do break though and through quite a bit of dedication, more than a little bit of luck, and several nights where the team simply was able to play their game the right way, the team finished third and announced there intention to be elite once more.

However all that posturing will mean little in the long run if it turns out that the third place finish of last edition is actually just a flash in the pan and that the Dragons are in fact just a mediocre team whose players are great but the team is lesser than the sum of its parts. The Empire has one of the best domestic leagues in the entire sport to draw upon rich talent that is at the very top of its game and the sport itself, the players are of some of the best quality. When Banija was the dominant force in the tournament, it was in the EBA that their star players were playing their game, the EBA was where Equestria's best players were playing when racked by domestic scandal, it is where the Dragons' best players are also playing. Yet unlike the two previously mentioned team, there is no trophies to signify this success at the domestic level and the caliber of player that is at the disposal of the Dragons now and in the past when the EBA has been at the height of the domestic basketball scene.

As the team gets ready for the upcoming tournament, it will be looking for a good performance from Hans Söderström. The Raynor City point guard is the key to the team playing at its peak, with his passing abilities making him a great playmaker and the perfect point guard to the run the pass first, shoot second offense that Odin Nagy has brought to the team. Nagy is a firm believer that the extra pass can lead to a higher percentage shot and see the team overcome what has traditionally been their biggest weakness when it has come to making deep runs into the tournament, which is having an awful shooting night. Last tournament saw only two matchers where the team failed to meet the field goal percentage goals that the manager had laid out for them, so there is obviously some merit to the idea, but can it be a philosophy that endures as teams become more accustomed to a Dragons team that is often passing up the quick pass and shoot option? Hans' ability to drive to the paint and with a good mid range jumper will ensure their are those open lanes and opportunities, it will be about capitalizing on them.

Get ready for a marathon and not a sprint though, as the group stage is going to be quite a long one, with eleven matches before the Round of Sixteen will be drawn. The Dragons find themselves in Group B and have a plethora of difficult challenges waiting for them in the group, with some of the most notable being rank ten Abanhfleft, Tjorl at rank six and whom the Dragons defeated in the third placed game last tournament, as well as the returning Banija. The Dragons are ranked fifth and are a first seed, with with such high second and third seed in their group, as well as one of the historically best teams in the sport, the group is going to be quite a tussle and tough one to try and work their way through. There will be no team going unscathed in this group, there is far too much quality to do so, it will be about enduring those poor games and not letting them beat you more than once that becomes a key to getting out of the gauntlet. The running begins with StrayaRoos and from there, the Dragons will have to take it game by game as they look to make good on this second chance of being elite that they have earned once more.

The Kabaka- A Series!
A series, written by an amateur Banijan historian, to talk about the various Kings of Banija!

Hello! Writing to you, the reader, from Northern Moravica University- where I am pursuing my Doctorate. I am here to write about Banija's various Kabakas! Let's talk about 'em. YOu may know some(Mwanga!) and you may not know about others(HOW many Alanyos?) But no fear! I'll write about them so that you can read about them, and learn about them! Some fun ones, some boring ones, some interesting ones.

Let's get started, shall we? With the late, the great...

Alanyo II

Let's get started, shall we? Let's talk about...

How did he come to power?

Like most Kings(or Maharajas, at the time, as we must call them), he came to power because his father died. His father was Wemusa II, who ruled Banija for 26 years before dying, peacefully, in his sleep. And that was when Alanyo II came to power. In 1729, he was crowned Alanyo II, Maharaja(Emperor) of Banija. And remember, this was a VERY different era. The democratic rights of the people had not been established. Hell, the nobility and clergy barely had formal governing power. Barely. For some, he was called the peacemaker. Why is that?

He's the only monarch, between Kizza's unification of modern-day Banija, and Akena III's successful conquest of the Busoga Islands, that did not attempt to conquer the Busoga Islands. That's right- out of 9 consecutive monarchies, his was the only one that did not make a move on Banija's island neighbors. Why? Well, you can quote him. "We have wasted time and treasure, for years, trying to launch conquests of the Busoga Islands." He told Banijans at the time. "That's not my fault. But, we can put an end to it, right now. The last five monarchs of this country tried, and failed, to do so. Let's get along with our neighbors for once, aye?"

What did he contribute to modern-day Banija?

He was the man who drew the modern regional boundaries of Banija. We've all seen the map. But how did we come up with those modern-day boundaries? He came up with those. "We need a way to unify this nation, and simply stop using the old clan system all the time. Look at these countries forming up around us. They have these regional governance systems, rather than going straight from national to local systems of government." While the borders have not chance for over 300 years, since he drew the lines, the names of two regions have changed.

During the Banijan civil war(1835-1841), what is now Ankole got its named- previously, it was called Kalongo. And the only other name that was different was Aksum. He gave what is now Aksum the name Oyam, to name it after the former clan that used to live in the region. But upon Banija's independence in 1906, Oyam was re-named Aksum- shockingly, the maiden name of the wife of Mugisha the Liberator, who came from Mynda. Funny how these things work out, right? But the lines themselves, and the other names- those all come from him.

Any Juicy Scandals?

Not the most well-behaved monarch, he was at the very center of what was the Luguyala Affair of 1739. He was staying at a castle in Luguyala, now-Aksum(then-Oyam), when he slept with what was reportedly 'up to 10-15 concubines at the palace over the course of a week'. It was a scandal that rocked the conservative nation, and Alanyo II was simply never able to recover his own popularity. He was deemed unpopular, and with his wife being deeply popular, it sunk him in the eyes of his countrymen, and the powerbrokers- particularly, the church.

Of course, back then, there was no Lukiiko to hold him to account. There was simply a cabinet- made up of members of the nobility, yes, but no fully fledged Lukiiko to really hold him to account. Just journalists, and cabinet members. Cabinet members who did not dare criticize their King, but journalists who were more than willing. Like we said, his popularity was never able to recover. A good old fashioned sex scandal- what country doesn't have 'em?

What was the most important part of his reign?

Ironically, the most important part of Alanyo II's reign, was his death- or rather, his incapacity that led to his death. He suffered a stroke on July 27th, 1742. It was so debilitating, that he went into what we now know is a permanent vegetative state. But we knew far less about medicine now than we did then- the man was breathing, so he was still in charge. There was no legal mechanism to appoint a Regent for a monarch that was still alive, and of course, with no monarch available to sign the cabinet's edicts, Banija had reached what we would call now a constitutional crisis(of course, there was no formal Constitution).

Alanyo II had three sons- Isebantu Alanyo, as well as Omugabe Kizza, and Omugabe Moses. Isebantu Alanyo was deeply unpopular, and more importantly, he was not trusted by the nobility at the time. He was known as a gambling man, and was in huge amounts of debt- in today's dollars, his debts reached 55 million NSDs. An insane figure, especially for his time.

In the absence of activity, Isebantu Alanyo declared himself Regent, and tried to assume the full powers of the throne. And in power, Isebantu Alanyo proved to be even more deeply unpopular. His cabinet refused to authorize him to use state funds to pay off his debts, and he started to replace members of his cabinet- with critics increasingly ending up dead. What would be the final straw? Isebantu Alanyo's banishment of his own mother.

The Banijan War of Succession

Of course, he was never the actual monarch. But he sure acted like it. He lived in the Palace, he signed things as The future Alanyo III of Banija. Acting in the role, without the title. But there was no doubt under Banijan law- the oldest son would be first in line to the throne. And Isebantu Alanyo was a lot of things- including being the oldest son.

But think about the banishment of his mother, or Alanyo II's wife. Luguba Rebecca had appealed to her son to 'change his free-spending ways', and try to rule the country for 'the good of the people'. "He was anointed by God- and he threw that in the trash." She said, after the war. "God took his favor away from him." The reports were shocking, and scandalous. January, 1943- reports came out that he hit his own mother. That he threw her out of Mujaguzo Palace, that he said she was "trying to rule as a King."

That was the final straw. It turned the nation against Isebantu Alanyo. And so his younger brothers, Omugabe Kizza and Omugabe Moses, launched a war to depose Isebantu Alanyo as Regent for his father, Alanyo II. They battled for about a year and a half. But eventually, the younger brothers gained the upper hand. They were able to flip enough of the nobility, and gain enough troops, especially throughout the countryside, to wage war on their older brother. Omugabe Moses was captured at the Battle of Hawabark, in December 1743, and his body was swinging from the gallows on New Years Day, 1744.

More and more of the military turned against Isebantu Alanyo, until eventually Omugabe Kizza was able to overwhelm Isebantu Alanyo and his forces, just outside Hoima, and capture the Isebantu in the Summer of 1744. Once Isebantu Alanyo was captured, the rest of his forces capitulated across the country. Isebantu Alanyo was taken back to Busukuma, and held in prison. He signed a proclamation, renouncing the rights of him or his heirs to any possesions of Banijan royalty, including the crown. Therefore, Kizza was declared the Isebantu.

The former Isebantu Alanyo sat for a year, in prison, until Alanyo II, in the vegatative state, finally passed away in the Summer of 1745. Isebantu Kizza was proclaimed Kizza VIII of Banija. And his first act? To execute Alanyo II's son, the former Isebantu, in 'revenge' for his treatment of their mother. That was the official reason. Real one, we imagine, was having someone sticking around with a better claim to the throne than you, even if they renounced it, was just not good business as a brand new monarch.

What a ride Alanyo II's time was as monarch, right? What King do you want to read about next?

A. Mugisha the Liberator- the man who achieved our modern-day independence from Quebec, in 1906
B. Zalaba II- the man who created the first Lukiiko for Banija
C. Wemusa I- The last Shujaa of the Kasanke, before Mormonism(and the establishment of Banija as an entity)
D. Allopu II- The only non-Mormon monarch since the establishment of Mormonism(1600-present)
Former champion of quite a few things. Former President of even more things.
Kabaka = King
Lubuga = Queen Consort
Isebantu = Crown Prince
Waziri = Foreign Minister

Quebec and Shingoryeo Men's and Women's National Basketball Teams - IBC 37

The Basketball Quebec, in continuation of its practice also shared by Royal Quebecois Volleyball Federation (RQVF) and Royal Quebecois Football Association (RQFA), is proud to continue its practice of sending mixed teams with expanded rosters to international competitions, even as the QBL and the QWBL gender-separated. In regards to their opponents' preferences to play the men, women or mixed teams will remain flexible in advanced consultation with their opponents (OOC: please read my team information right below).

Quebecois Basketball In Nutshell

Considered to be one of the 'Big 3' of indoor sports played in Quebecois winters (Basketball, Hockey and Volleyball, while Handball is a summer sport here), basketball is an extremely popular, well-loved sport in Quebec. With massive attention given to both teams, and all levels of basketball being watched from high school to the international stage, the Quebecois are expected to bring fire and fury to their cheering and jeering game.

After looking at the roster, you may have noticed that the Quebecois national teams are...slightly bigger than usual, with Quebecois women being taller than average and men shorter, even though neither are really Drawkians to start with. There is nothing to deny about how the talent disparity exists between the Quebecois women, one of the best (if not the best) program in Multiverse right now, and the men, who would be at their best in the top 15, and that's the way of life.

That said, for where they lack in particular height, the Grim Reapers make up for it with tactical versatility, power and strength, not to mention their ability to maximise rotations. The previously-mentioned disparity of talent between the Quebecois men and the women, as well as the international basketball scene's tendency to have predominant number of national teams be mostly male, had influenced the Quebecois brand of double-squading their tournaments with 12 players selected from the 30-player preliminary list to represent Quebec every international window. This is particularly evident in the group stage, where the Quebecois have almost always experimented with any format, and often key starters are rested whenever possible. Once the Quebecois national team enters the elimination round (or in the case of IBC 31, second group stage), the rotation tends to shrink to around 11 or 12.

Please see here for domestic-international calendar.

Position Team/Program Name Age Affiliation
Program Director Men Henry Dunnan-Sung 61 Basketball Quebec (BQ)
Program Director Women Anne-Francoise Neubauer 61 Basketball Quebec (BQ)
Head Coach Senior-M Mirko Lazetic N/A Basketball Quebec (BQ)
Head Coach Senior-W Allison Dubois 56 Basketball Quebec (BQ)
Associate Coach Joint Kiggwe Muhumuza 61 Basketball Quebec (BQ)
Assistant Coach Senior-M Vahid Bratusa 65 Kingston Raptors (QBL)
Assistant Coach Senior-W Kweon Joo-Hyeon 45 Hamilton SonicBoom
Doctor Joint Kim Bessette-Wolf 56 Montreal Koreana (QWBL)

After an additional time period to evaluate their respective teams on a slower year that was made possible thanks to the back-to-back hosting of the IBC-35 and the 16th Summer Olympics, coaches Allison Dubois and Mirko Lazetic had named the 16-player squad for the 36th International Basketball Championships. The past IBC, which featured a two-staged format with a qualifying group that was then followed by the 20-team tournament in Twin Cities, the Grim Reapers managed to make their third consecutive semifinals appearance to a fourth-place finish.

While the Grim Reapers had once again fallen well short of their general aim - that being to overcome their dreadful semifinals record and eventually vie for a championship - Basketball Quebec is relatively positive about the program's outlook. There is no doubt that Mirko Lazetic, a traditionalist, team-driven coach best known for his consistency in bringing the Mytanars together before his gig with the Grim Reapers, is the right coach for the mostly individualistic group of players on the men's side. A return to the semifinals, even though it had ended up short against Hannasea and Delaclava sides with stronger individual talents, no doubt was a success, especially with how unpredictable the upper half of the basketball echelon has been lately. The men's program continuing to find stability and success (they have not missed the playoffs since IBC-25, so a remarkable streak that goes over twenty-five years!), on top of the women winning Olympic gold two months later at the same KD Gardens, would suggest that there is no need for anything drastic to be taken at the upper level of all things to do with this team.

As has been seen by the Quebecois women's success in the Olympics, and not to mention the Quebecois clubs' general success in the IUBC, r there is no doubt that iron sharpens iron, and targeted investment leads to success. Hockey, formerly the leader among winter sports in this northern Anaian nation, has been faltering in popularity and general attention due to extensive years of player-federation disputes and inconsistent international performance, allowing volleyball and basketball to take a greater chunk of popularity among the younger sports fans in past years. There is no doubt basketball has a consistent slate of superstars and international talent to promote - as seen in the QWBL where Xenia Dall'Antonia, the 2050 Bunjil Games' MVP, and a trio of stars from the underheralded 2056 silver medalists of Brookstation were signed to major deals - and the California City Lakers may be the most followed team in Banija with Isaiah Lavaga as coach and Oluwasegun Tionge as their starting centre. Whether a more international league would translate to better results for the national team is another story, but then there appears to be a lot less pressure than in the past years where the league sometimes gets outshadowed by the drive for the ever-elusive IBC title.

With this in mind, let's go into the sixteen-player entry, from which twelve players will be selected to play each and every day. It truly feels as if time had passed for the first generation of the 'rejuvenated' Grim Reapers squad. Mustapha Niang's unable to declare for the national team due to his familial circumstances that Mirko Lazetic, the national team coach, was the first person to be notified of. There is also the season-ending injury to Matthieu-Abel Park, whose early promise had eventually turned into a plateau in still very good form, and the ageing of Noh Seung-Hoon doubt adds to a level of uncertainty here.

It would also mean that it's mostly a younger, energetic squad they have on the men's side, perhaps one that could fit Lazetic's vision to pass the ball more, and be out there running the full court on both the offence and the defene. No matter the losses it is a very talented squad, with a primetime scoring option in Alexandre Armanet and an all-around centre in Noh Seung-Hoon, a player whose effectiveness has gradually lessened against faster, more technical opponents over the years. Others to note are Twin Cities guards Bahng Se-Woong and Allende Hong with the splash brothers noted for Bahng's excellent passing abilities and Hong's 1-on-1 Rushmoristep (Eurostep). That said, even with the rise of a taller, more athletic group of players who should be playing better defence, the men's squad does have a problem utilising its depth on offence. This weakness by the Grim Reapers' squad, a rare one that had only started becoming an issue of late, still costed the Grim Reapers' against higher-stake opponents before - see the Grim Reapers against Hannasea, Nova Anglicana and Delaclava last IBC, and also LA Lakers last season - and it is something that Lazetic and his high-powered coaches may want to address sooner than later.

Concerns also exist for the women's team, though for different reasons. Once the backbone of this squad, the once-defining 'Silver Generation' of Quebecois women who had emerged at the early-2040s (IBC 28-30) have walked off into the sunset with point guard Heo Myeong-Yoon, small forward Hazel Hanson-Conavacio, and centre Yim Se-Ryeong all retiring from international play after their overtime victory over Brookstation in the gold medal match. This void, combined with injuries and ageing that have struck guards Abigail Corelli and Erin Allen-Conroy and the shorter entry numbers for this year's single-round robin IBC, means that perhaps the inevitable transition's going to happen at last for the Quebecois women.

Once the bronze baby of the team, Jin Chang-Sook is now the clearcut leader of the team with her all-around forward expected to contribute heavily on the court. Fortunately for Jin, however, the team is bolstered by a solid core of youngsters with solid international experience. In particular, it is strong on the backcourt and on the wings, where the 'Triple J' of Joh Soo-Yeong (all-rounded PG), June Chavez Mayberry (explosive scorer on the long-two range), and Jocelyn Keenan Morse (outstanding perimeter defender), are expected to fill the gap left by their predecessors after a strong run at the Olympics just two years ago. Centre remains a question, however, with the league having shortages of a high-calibre 5 in general, and even with Taylor Anne Rowsell, whose vertical defence and shooting continue to be good, you need more depth than that to not overburden Rowsell. Unfortunately, this part is not what they have an answer to, so it is expected they utilise the small ball more when Rowsell is not out in the court with Jin or even Gloria Akpannah as the centre...and small ball's not what the Grim Reapers' of previous generation have been known for either...

INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 37 -Poafmersia

NEW CAMPAIGN FOR OUR BASKETBALL AT IBC 37
BY
Danijel Grlić

We are back on the world basketball scene. We are hoping that the return will be in great style. This is the fourth road to IBC for the Srednjaci basketball team. At the first international basketball competition IBC 31, we finished in 26th place. Even then we saw that we have talented players for great results.

SILVER MEDAL AT IBC 32

In our second big competition, IBC 32 our basketball comes to the greatest success in the IBC competition. In a long and great campaign, our basketball players come to the cecon place and won silver medal.
In the fight for gold, the Banija team was convincingly better and won 79-67. It is the first grand final for our basketball players and the pressure was great upon them. In that game, we didn't offer the best resistance to the world's best basketball team.
Banija managed to defend the title.

MEN'S BRONZE MEDAL AT THE OLYMPICS

After that competition, another great result of our basketball followed.
At the XV Olympic Games, our men's team won a bronze medal. In the semifinals, we were defeated by the hosts of the games Electrum with 74-77. After that defeat, we didn't lose spirit, but our players in the fight for the bronze medal beat the Ioudaia team 79-73. Two difficult and very even games were behind our basketball players in fight for medals, but they managed to climb on the podium.
The women's team failed to get to the medal fight, they were stopped in the round of 16.

INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 37

Our team is classified in group D. At first glance, we must say that the group is difficult. There is two of the top 10 teams in the group including the first seed Nova Anglicana. Seconf of them is Chromatika team. Chromatika is great team and they will surely look towards the very top and fight for a medal. Apart from them, the Græntfjall, eleventh seed team is with us also.
Magnecia and Qasden could be a teams that would create problems to all.

Group B
Qasden (20) @ Poseidon Arena, Melarit

Part 1 – Gwen’s Valkyries- Angels, Enter the Scene.

Hello there! It’s me, Gwen Tracer Allison Oxton! Haha, even I and most of us don’t use our full names that often, those four names are like the equivalence of the first name for us. Anyway, that aside, how are you all doing? It has been quite a while, ain’t it? I mean, for me, it was not that long, but for you guys, and for the average folks here, a year indeed lasts quite long! We are back with IBC 37 and ooooh boy, we have quite a surprise and a good line-up this time around, consisting of both the familiar and new teams that we are going to be playing against! First and foremost, do let me begin on Gwen’s Angels – that is our team – and see what has changed, at least relatively.

First, the all-ladies line-up! We have Marley Aaliyah Lena Annabelle Ava Hodges as the Point Guard! Ada Roos Baston Sabot Dieneke Vondermans as the Shooting Guard! Awenasa Panola Samantha Markus Cervantes as Small Forward, perhaps even literally, owing to the fact that she is the smallest lady out of the 5 primary players here! Moving on, then you have Rossa Serena Vic Rosângela Chaves Hamamura as the Power Forward! And last but not least (and causing a little bit of unfortunate but light-hearted scene with Novokshonova Adeliya Anna Konstantinovna), we have Yuri Anastasia Catherine Moire Mok Jung-Won, as the Center player for Gwen’s Angles! … Angels.

Right, now let’s talk about the teams that we would be playing against. The Group Stage Draw and reshuffling has enabled us to the Team 1, which is not very significant in the grand scheme of things and is mainly to be used for referencing and the like. There are 11 teams, including us, in each of the 4 groups, so there will be 11 match days for the qualifications, naturally – 10 games, and 1 rest. I think you guys know the drill by now, I apologise for going too detailed repeatedly over and over, haha! Oh and of course, goes without saying that we won the bid for hosting the matches once again! This time, we will be hosting the first 5 matches of the qualifications, so please do come on down on Mars, and then have some fun along the way too, yes? You can definitely visit the Earth part of Valentine Z too, because we understand that time is not on our side with the matches going very quickly by. Getting to the point, that means you can use the wormholes to get to Earth from Mars in a matter of seconds. Word of advice and warning: Do NOT use the teleporters to send living things, including yourself. You WILL DIE, and then we will have to find your consciousness. It is one thing to transfer consciousness from one place to another, but we can’t do much when your body gets sliced into a trillion pieces, and your consciousness being considered lost. That aside…

We now get to the main gist of things. First match day, wow we are off to a start! We are playing against… no one! That is right, we will not be playing with anyone and instead will be on a break for the R&R. Naturally, this is also a good day for us to show our hospitality, along with making sure that everyone coming to our world is welcomed very warmly! Good start so far, but then it goes on from here! MD2, we will be up against Trolleborg, whose football team we have played against in Cup of Harmony 82, I believe! So they are definitely a familiar name to us all. Plus, we shall be collaborating with them, in the sense that we will be sharing the hosting rights for these 11 matchdays, with them hosting the other 5; MD6 will be a tad different. Anyway, MD3, against United Adaikes, and then MD4 against HUElavia. Familiar names, yes? They definitely are for us! MD5 against Southwest Eastnorth, which I do hope that we won’t get disoriented, haha! MD6, against Gran Saguaro, who is… hmm, that is pretty new to me, at least in the present moment. My future self will definitely know! MD7 against Geektopia, we have seen them in football a lot, yes, but not very sure about basketball. Probably first time we are playing against them. MD8 will be against Juvencus, which will definitely get interesting. MD9, that will be with Dod Rava, and it too will be definitely a surprise.

And now, for the last two – MD10 and MD11. Ohh boy, I had quite a bit of fun predicting this, and I know one of them was going to happen once again. The first one gave the illusion that we have been playing against them in both football and basketball for many seasons, and the next one – they have the history, they have the legendary shots and scores, and they have been our gracious host for the previous season. The first one, of course, is Drawkland, and the second one is Hannasea! Drawkland might be the only nation so far whose players and inhabitants in general have dwarfed the Valentians, just by a little bit. At least, in the playing field and in the courts. Naturally, without doubt, the Valentians’ 22 feet height average outside of sports cannot be matched, still, heheh. So with all of this being said and done, I along with the rest of Gwen’s Angels would like to wish everyone good games, and good luck!

About this jolly gang

Periodically, Sky Reavers send teams for participation in sport events not only from professionals, but from a variety of warriors and adventurers, who are belvied to fit the event. That's another weird tradition, that appeared after the Revolution in 1982 and is still persisting and it's not known exactly, how it even came to be. One of the possible ideas, is that this is a way to show the world the national ability to adapt, improvise and overcome. The other theory is that it has something to do with propagandistic ideological show, that any man can achieve anything. And some people belive, that this is due to how the new society is organized.

This case was not an exception, as the team has managed to qualify for representation of Sky Reavers in IBC37. With not being exactly professional, they have to compesnate slight lack of technique with their atheltic ability and endurance, they have from their backgrounds, burning passion, and wildcard tactics, that are unpredictible and chaotic in their nature and involve lots of improvisaiton on the fly. A standard Sky Reaver approach, that is used in many things, and in sports it yields extremely varied results from epic victories to total defeats. It's messy, unconventional but gets the job done.

But Sky Reaver team, clad in their black and blue jersets is all set to gain as much victories as it's possible. After a good rest from the road, that involved a bar crawls, they are all in high spirits and ready for any challenge!

OOC: A bit hasted. Hope I didn't mess this up... More details will be in future posts.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Yes
Assign other stats (e.g. rebounds, assists): Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes.
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes, but... within reason, that means no mangling or killing.
Eject my players: Nope
Godmod other events: Yes

INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BACK? YEA THEY ARE

Image
I Cavalli are ready to rock n' roll

As I am writing this, I am on my way to Antillia, Costa de Ouro to watch the OG gli attaccanti participate in the World Cup of Handball, howeverI could not dismiss the opportunity to make a quick post about my favorite sport in the entire world. I am of course talking about basketball and i Cavalli, who are ready to provide us either the most fantastic run of all time, or another disappointment that is not indicative of their skill level. I am here to talk about our group draw and how I believe we will fare a bit more maturely in this article, so if you are sensitive or a wuss, you best not read this article, though most of you dear readers already know me and my writing behaviors by now.

This competition is laid out in 4 groups of 10 teams each, we happen to be pot number 4 which honestly is high considering our performances against several of the sides of our group which I will present below and probably use my very fuzzy jet lag-ridden memory for my commentary. Since, you know, I do not remember which sides we had the pleasure, or misfortune, to play against.

Our pot 1 is Hannasea, I am certain we have played against them before, I do not remember the outcome if that was the case but I do not remember getting whooped too hard, which is hopeful. But hopefulness aside they have been world champions before and they are ranked 3rd in the world which to be fairly honest is extremely scary and our lads will have to work for the W.

Pot 2 is Valentine Z... apparently they are so tall that they have to shape-shift themselves to make any matchday fair. By my quick research on the Valentine Z topic, they live in a society with high-tec, just like how Drawkland is. Tall and advanced takes the cake for them I guess.

Speak of the devil, pot 3 is actually Drawkland! The Revoda Sea rivalry will be taking place this time around once again. Judging by our record against them, it is really tight and we should be maintaining a closer look to our Sonnelian brethren from across the oversized channel. They have also had a significant amount of success in this competition owing to their ginormous height and general brilliance on the field, beating them will be major bragging rights.

Pot 4 is us... we clearly have the quality and we need to focus on our game which is all there is to it. Maybe a break is imminent in the horizons ahead.

Our pot 5 is Trolleborg and so far we have like 4 Independent sides on this group which admittedly makes this really refreshing and exciting to me. What makes it sad though is that since Trolleborg is in this group, only a handful of independents will have the chance to advance past this competition. Trolleborg is Trolleborg however, talented sportsmen in everything they do, as such, we look ahead.

Pot 6 is Southwest Eastnorth, a side I definitely remember we have crushed a handful of times. This to be honest makes me very happy and I believe we can sorely crush them once more this time around with our team syneregy.

Pot 7 is HUElavia... honestly our romance brethren will be making it very difficult for some of our fans to behave. Hopefully there is no drama and only love for them. However I cannot comment on their basketball since I am not aware of much of it.

Pot 8 is United Adaikes, one of the last clutch entrants to this competition, maybe they could be cooking something or they could just be here for the vibes. Hopefully I see them cooking on the pitch so we style on them like we should.

Our pot 9 is Dod Rava, a side I am not aware of once more but they seem to be presenting themselves very well. They could be someone to keep a further eye on in the future.

We have Geektopia joining in as well, while their football seems to be alright, nobody can exactly tell how much they know ball. As always, we should be catching some nice hoops against them.

Last but not least is Gran Saguaro, a side that only recently came to the spotlight of multiversal sports. To me they look very brotherly and probably could be causing some problems, so the unranked symbol next to them could mean next to nothing until we see them on the court.

My general prediction is that we can and should be able to do a deep run with the quality at hand and the opponents we are up against, generally speaking though we should be looking for a number of upsets that we either need to produce or avoid happening against us. The first matchday is against Geektopia as a matter of fact, so we better style on them and move on as we should.

Postby Nova Anglicana » Fri Feb 03, 2023 5:22 am

Megan McKenzie had done it! She'd done the "secret agent stuff" part of her trip to Brenecia. Her prime minister, party leader, and well, mentor(?) Josephine Clark, in picking her for this mission, had told her she needed to have a secret meeting with Princess, now Queen, Etain to bring her over to the Nova Anglican side in exchange for a rebuilding package from the EU. An ally like Etain could bring Brenecia back from the brink and further Nova Anglicana's influence in Esportiva. Esther Smetona seemed perfectly nice, but when the chips were down, she'd slashed welfare, and despite the rebrand, her party came from a tradition McKenzie would have called "soft fascism." Much better to have a monarch who cared for her nation as the real person of influence. Perhaps the success of this mission would likewise revitalise the EU Assembly as a place of dialogue, debate, and action.

So she'd dutifully left her hotel at five minutes past midnight and walked three blocks to the north, to the public square. She'd worn dark clothing and only one very obviously drunk man had thought she was a "lady of the night." A car had arrived to take her to the palace two minutes later. She'd been deposited at the back entrance and whisked past the guards, who hadn't questioned why a tall blonde non-Brenecian would be arriving at the palace so late. A good sign of loyalty. Or maybe just apathy. In any case, the palace, which she'd toured previously, had continued to strike her as rather modest, at least to anyone who is accustomed to the Windsors. But when she got into the meeting room with Etain, it had all faded away.

The woman was regal. The royal robes, lined with fur, the Brenecian Celtic script that flowed around the walls, giving the whole place an air of ancient tradition, of mottos handed down generation to generation and diligently attempted to live up to. And Etain herself. She looked every inch the queen. Where Morrigan Calver, the Royal Secretary, had frozen Megan, made her feel inadequate, stabbed at her with her clipped words, Etain made her feel as though the queen could demand the world and she would have done her best to give it to her. Maybe it was her slightly Euran-influenced accent letting her borrow some of the power of that nation, rooting Megan to the spot. Etain had welcomed her and said, "I understand you have a proposition for me. I hope you know royals are not bound by the same rules that apply to politicians."

And everything had just vanished. The impassioned speech she planned to make on behalf of the Brenecian people, the detailed allocation schedule of potential EU cash, right down to the removal of anti-homeless infrastructure, and any thought she had of negotiating. It all poofed away. All she was able to do was think about the "freedom of action" Calver had told her Etain would need and she gave in. She found herself proposing only nominal restrictions on the use of the potential EU money. She couldn't help herself. The woman obviously should have ruled Brenecia as an absolute, enlightened monarch. It would be unthinkable to suggest anything else.

Now, on the flight home, she found herself regretting her actions. Why hadn't she stood up for the poor, the LGBTQ, and those others obviously in need? She wasn't someone who bent in the face of authority. She'd faced down countless pompous, quite frankly, evil men and won concessions from them that would make a torturer blush. So why was Etain different? Perhaps it was her gaze. She had remembered to put in that Jo Clark was looking for an alliance, for a friend in Esportiva, and that acceptance of this deal would mean Brenecia should adopt a pro-Nova Anglican policy. And Etain had seemed perfectly amenable to that. But maybe she had been lying. Megan hoped she hadn't been. In the state she'd been in, the woman could have told her the moon was made of green cheese and she'd have believed her. That was an incredibly odd funk she'd experienced. But what's done is done. She had to keep her end of the deal and report to the Foreign Affairs committee that the best course of action would be a mix of grants and loans with few restrictions on Brenecian ability to use them. She had to whip votes, make sure any bill had at least something for the poor, and try to fight off any changes that bi- her colleague, Melody Savoy, might try to make. The woman was obviously a schemer. No, Brenecia would be far better off in Etain and Megan's hands. She was sure of it.

Greetings, compatriots!
It's TTV from Valentine Z, where first rounds of World Basketball Championship group stage will be played. VZ will host group stage games second time, at least on our memory, so this place is familiar to us to some extent, and maybe it will help our basketball players in their tough uphill battle. Everyone needs to moderate their appetites as soon as possible and realize that the path to at least some success promises to be very difficult. But the national leader Vladimir Finn remains the head coach of the team, and this is the main factor on which the hopes of basketball fans are pinned. Yes, of course, the transformation of the national hockey team in the hands of the leader of our country, which move team in four years from the outsider of the group stages to the world champion, gave some credence to the high expectations. Victory of hockey team - first ever victory of major tournament apart from the football and Olympiad in the history of Trolleborg - is great and visible milestone. But still there is only one such victory, and we should not be engaged in linear extrapolation on this basis.

Our basketball team starts playing from the fifth position in the group, and even with the current favorable conditions, allowing almost half of the group to go to the playoffs, the struggle for this promises to be very difficult. Moreover, we have as opponents hosts of first part of the group stage, Valentine Z, and in addition we will have to play on home turf, where fate is not usually give us much chances. There was even voices against hosting anything due to the sad consequences of this. . In addition, in the group we have mighty Hannasea, the third-ranked country in the basketball world, the finalist of the 35th and the quarterfinalist of the 36th World Cup, and the more than experienced Drawkland and Juvencus. In addition there was a large number of ambitious teams, each of them can cause a lot of problems.

Our head coach spent a week with the players at training camp where he is rumored to be focusing, along with his very illustrous body of specialists, primarily concentrated on physical training and mental conditioning. Yesterday Vladimir Finn went with the team to the tournament, and was sparing in words at a press conference, speaking things very much like we did: there is a lot of hard work to be done before we can count on at least some reward from almighty fate, but getting into the playoffs is looked possible.

A whole army of fans is goes together with the team. Although in their hearts, we think, they share reasonable skepticism, they also are full of hope that the national leader will be able to create the same miracle in basketball as in hockey, and for now they all promise not to spare emotions and voices in order to provide lads with what is in their power to provide. Good luck to ours!

HOME STADIUM (The Fleftic Arena, Riuwiee)
Image
Presenting the Fleftic Arena, the largest indoor arena by seating capacity in the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft

Situated in the north of Abanhfleft's capital city of Riuwiee is the National Sports Park, a 140-hectare "special national designated area" in which a majority of Riuwiee's sporting facilities are located. Standing out among the stadia and gymnasia is the massive and imposing structure and flat roof of the Fleftic Arena, officially the largest indoor stadium in the whole of Abanhfleft with its official stated capacity of 100,786 seated spectators for indoor sports. The structure broke ground on September 26, 2009 as part of the capital city's reconstruction efforts following the aftermath of the Holy Catholic Revolution of 2008 which left nearly the entirety of Riuwiee devastated, and construction was completed over three years later in 2012. The Fleftic Arena is the official home arena of the Abanhfleft national basketball team and has played host to dozens of matches during the International Basketball Championships. Aside from that, the Riuwiee Presidents of the Fleftic Basketball Association occasionally uses the Fleftic Arena as its home stadium when it plays marquee match-ups against well-known teams from the league such as the Malabon Black Ops or the Markovsky Red Army, taking advantage of the arena's huge capacity when the capacity of their usual home stadium, the Sterling Arena, is deemed to be not enough for games of such popularity. Aside from that, the Fleftic Arena has also played host to at least four FBA All-Star Weekends since its inauguration and opening in 2012.

As for the stadium's location, Riuwiee is the capital city of Abanhfleft and is home to over 20 million people. The Fleftic people are very crazy and passionate about basketball, and even though their home side the Riuwiee Presidents has been disappointing in the FBA as of late, the fans still come out in droves to support and cheer for their team.

late late cutoff. While I didn't exactly promise prompts, since this is such a long marathon alongside the World Cup, I have decided to find some prompts. Dug through past NSS tournament prompts, thought of some on my own, went to look for AIs to suggest them, etc. So here is the first prompt:

Unique Creatures. In every nation, they have a particular creature or species of animal which they can consider to be uniquely theirs. For instance, Poafmersia has the Panjias, which is a special breed of horses that are faster and have more stamina. How about your country? Do you have a sentient species? Or a species your people treasure? How do they interact with your people and people from other multiverses or nations? What's their place in your country?
