Hand on heart, I don't know if I have any values anymore as I've become so disillusioned and apathetic about everything.

I vaguely consider 'freedom' to be my main value but even then I don't do that much to defend it - I still follow a lot of society's more arbitrary rules, I still do what my boss tells me in exchange for money (i.e. I exchange freedom for material security) and the most I've done politically has been to grumble and vote for whoever isn't in power, knowing full well that no one I vote for is sincere about respecting freedom.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd love a chance to kill a bunch of innocent people and frame it as a moral crusade to make myself feel better about it, but I don't think there's a lot I can do and I'm not really inclined to expend energy trying to change things that are outside of my control.

When I was younger and more idealistic I'd have probably fought for something - which is no doubt why most militaries prefer young men to people my age - but these days I just don't care about anything.

I wouldn't be quite so sure. Imagine your country was way smaller than the aggressor's and however good your army may be, you wouldn't be able to withstand in the long run if they threw wave after wave at you. The only way to win this war is to use your WMDs. It's still not a very realistic scenario, but not totally impossible either.

LIke a lot of people on this thread have said, it ultimately depends on the values which we're focusing on here... but I wouldn't stoop so low as to mass murder in the tens of thousands to even millions just to protect my values. I am still of course a strong believer in the principles of Marxism and socialism but to kill several million people, most of whom are guaranteed to be completely innocent or irrelevant to the war effort is too far for me.
I'll fight the war sure, but I won't break the Geneva Convention.
