Certainly is! Not sure how much you've caught up on the lore of the setting and whatnot, but the rundown of our current situation is as follows: The Thin Isles, part of the United Gallian Federation, are under attack by the forces of Hell and Watchtower cultists alike. The Baron of Towraigth, sovereign of the Thin Isles, sent a man named Isaiah Daegal for aid to the city of St. Veowulf, seat of the Duke to whom he owes fealty. On the way, he was attacked by cultists and corrupt Federal officers, but was saved by the player characters, who subsequently got roped up into the ensuing crusade to liberate the Thin Isles.

Currently we're in the midst of said crusade. The party is sailing around the isle of East Aigth alongside a small fleet in order to enact a plan to liberate the town of Kjalarrgrove from its infernal invaders. On the way there, however, they suddenly came across a Hellspawn fleet similar in size, and are currently in a pitched sea battle.

Since the whole context is a military operation, which by the way has lots of volunteers (two or three whole 'adventurer companies' as they're called), your character could easily be an Elemental (or not, your choice; we do have what's basically an ascended normie on our party :P) who's part of the effort but hasn't seen a lot of action until now, and jump into the fray with the rest of the player characters.

Obligatory not the OP, but the above info should be pretty accurate. Let us know if you have any questions -nods-

Thanks for the info! That sounds pretty cool (I have only partially read the lore, but will read more). I could have a character be from the town that's being invaded who wants to fight back.

That sounds like a pretty cool idea. You'll probably want to hit up Const if you want more background info for your character in that case.

Yee. Do they take TGs, or do they prefer to use this thread? I also have a couple questions about lightning magic for my character idea.

I mean knowing him, either should be fine. He's probably just busy and that's why he hasn't commented so far :P

Awesome! I might pose my questions here to see how well my character idea meshes with existing characters.

Welcome! It's always fun having a new poster around here. Feel free to ask questions in the OOC thread. I sometimes discuss certain secret character ideas via TG, but for the most part I prefer using the OOC. I find it easier to refer back to stuff in here than my inbox, and it helps in the collaborative worldbuilding that character creation often winds up resulting in. Your character being from the Thin Isles (or an Aigthryian, an archaic demonym some of them would still use) would be a good fit. Having a local join the party would be an interesting contrast to the assorted world-travellers that constitute most of them.

What questions did you have about Lightning magic?

~snip~

My character idea involves a bit of a trickster who recently discovered her powers and, funnily enough, has figured that metal conducts electricity (she's not a lightning-metal hybrid; I found it entertaining there is a character with a similar base concept to mine, though. I want to have said character be fascinated in how things work and know how to rig a couple traps to start out; nothing fancy). I was wondering if it's possible for someone whose powers recently manifested would have the ability to touch objects that conduct electricity and can make them briefly electrified (probably not enough to do any harm yet) and what other basic things she could do.

I'm thinking that she lives in the village with her divorcee dad. Would it make sense for him to be an Elemental who is from this town and keeps his powers a secret?

What is the culture of the Thin Isles, specifically the town, like? I'm hazarding it is coastal (I'm thinking of having the dad be a dockworker). Is their town fairly isolated?

Take all the time you need to answer this deluge of questions!

If I ever manage to bring Ulric back into the campaign he could teach yours a thing or two. "Old man and young protegé" kind of arrangement.

Hey, my character happens to be a lighting-metal hybrid! It'll be very cool for Willis to interact with another Lighting Elemental. Since technically lighting elementals can be interpreted as electricity manipulation, on the off chance this new character learns electromagnetism maybe they can fly using electricity and do other fun stuff too! Looking forward to your posts.

Take all the time you need to answer this deluge of questions!

Your character being able to conduct her Lightning through conductive objects makes sense. She might have to keep her hands (or maybe feet, depending on how creative she is) on it to keep sustaining the current, or have it fade out after somewhere between 10-20 seconds. As she builds up her endurance she could make objects stay electrified longer, especially if she starts learning the basics of Mageforging from Ulric and Willis. I'm intrigued to see how having two other Lightning Elementals in the party will affect her training. Other basic forms of magic would be shooting small bolts of lightning a short distance, probably only enough to hurt or maybe stun someone. With her magic starting to grow she'll find her body starting to move faster, too.

Her dad could be an Elemental from the town, although he would have had some difficulty staying there. This wouldn't be from the townsfolk disliking Elementals (such a thing would be blasphemous and heretical), but rather him having to suppress his Questing Instinct. Her dad could have had a human parent himself, and/or be a weaker Elemental all-around, which could diminish his inclination towards roaming the world, fighting evil. Alternatively, he could have spent his younger years fighting plenty of evil, and/or perhaps serving in some army somewhere during the Great Galllian War, or further abroad. During this time he could have made too many enemies, whether from rival armies or vengeful vanquished Tenaembra cults, or just have worn himself out. After Kayarost's invasion and the world settling into peace the father decides to go into quiet retirement somewhere far away from his old troubles, and winds up in the Thin Isles. The Thin Isles are pretty isolated, with the nearest mainland settlements (only small coastal villages) being days away from the easternmost part of the archipelago. Towraigth, the local capital, sees a bit more contact with the wider world, serving as a trading post between the archipelago and the continent. Someone living in the western side of the Thin Isles could easily go months without seeing a mainlander. Sometimes the locals call the Thin Isles the last port before the end of the world; to the north is the utterly accursed Black Crypt (site of the last battle between the Villderas and the Daemonic Behemoth a thousand years ago) and uncharted, unending ice. To the southwest is Halvefor, and nobody knows what lies to the west of Halvefor.

As for the culture, Galllia is generally similar to a more VIkingesque Great Britain. Technologically they're at a mid-19th century tech level for the most part (firearms are a big exception, being closer to early 1600's level), and maybe some other stuff I'm forgetting for now. Culturally they're more medieval, having one strong unified church, strong feudal aristocratic power, etc. Northern Galllia is generally more Norse than Southern Galllia, and for the Thin Isles I figured they would be even more Norse than the mainland North.

Feel free to ask more questions, or tell me if I need to clarify anything from my explanations.

Thank you so much for the input! I like the idea of the dad having already had his fill of questing and going to retire with his wife (they split up when my character was three, as her Questing Instinct could not be doused). I'm thinking of having him be a dockworker. App is impending.

Name: Kendra Seafarer

Sex: Female

Age: 18

Appearance: Kendra is 5'5" and slim with tanned skin and luminous golden eyes. Her dark brown hair is frequently tied in a hasty ponytail, though rogue strands often frame her face. She is attractive in a haunting sort of way, the defining features of her face being high cheekbones and a sharp nose that complement a piercing gaze. Yet behind the imposing exterior are playfulness and vulnerability, both of which are strikingly apparent in the rare instance Kendra makes eye contact.

Element: Lightning

Skills: Kendra can make a few simple traps using rope, fishing line, springs, and the like, though such traps are by and large harmless. She's very good at hiding and is quite nimble after years spent prowling around the docks. Her mind is sharp and innovative, and she is adept at problem-solving. Kendra is also good at figuring out how things work: she deduced metal is a conduit of electricity through trial and error, and she likes to take apart things like clocks to see how they function. Kendra is also decent at tying knots.

Personality: Kendra is fascinated by how things work and seeks to understand what makes machines work the way they do. An astute observer, she prefers to spend time by herself taking apart objects and trying to put them back together, which makes her a bit meddlesome. Her penchant for fiddling with traps brands her as a troublemaker, but there is no malice behind her pranks; she merely wants to practice her skills and see what works. Kendra is awkward around others but generally friendly, and she loves anything related to adventuring.

Weaknesses: Kendra struggles in social situations and tends to be detached from her peers. She isn't outgoing unless she's comfortable with the situation, which is not that often in her home environment, and she's not as valiant as she'd like to be. Having to hide he true identity her entire life has made her as afraid of her nascent power as she is fascinated by them, so she isn't quite ready to test the limits of what she can do. Furthermore, she is neither fast nor strong despite her dexterity, and she knows little of self-defense beyond making her traps. Kendra has never had formal schooling and is thus illiterate, though she'd be eager to learn to read given the opportunity.

Equipment, if any: A satchel with a couple days' worth of rations, a canteen of water, one Danethum, a spool of fishing line, a cloak, and various odds and ends she's collected that might be useful in making traps. She also carries with her a dagger that belonged to her paternal great-grandfather.

Bio: Born in the town of Berenk to two Lightning Elementals, Kendra had the perfect setup for a stable if ordinary life. Her first few years were harmonious, with only whispers of the outside world leaving her parents' mouths. That harmony was shattered when Kendra was three. Her parents split on mutual terms, with her mother disappearing into the outside world following a series of dreams, leaving her father, Totem, to raise Kendra alone. Kendra soon forgot what her mother was like, but she did not grow up feeling much resentment or a desire for a mother figure. Having a single father was difficult, but she was satisfied with the way things were.

Kendra spent much of her time alone. She entertained herself by exploring the docks, particularly the ropes and any tools left lying about, or by playing with anything interesting she could get her hands on at home. Her father would berate her for dismantling various items around the house, for she didn't yet understand how to put things back together, and eventually brought her to his work to run errands and fix/replace any broken or worn equipment.

[Let me know if this paragraph needs to be tweaked or cut.] Several weeks ago, Kendra started to have strange dreams. She dreamt of dark beings upon ships, of a silent woman with arrows of ice and a figure leaping through the air, red coat flapping in the wind. Images of a couple, a fair man and a woman of strange origins, flitted in and out of her visions. There was the figure of a man, his face obscured by shadow, barking at her to stick by his side as lightning crackled across his hands. There were voices out for blood, out to eliminate the Elementals. And there was a vision of herself, a hideous scar upon her face and pain in her eyes, facing foes with her arms outstretched as electricity burst from her palms.

Her powers manifested last month, first as little arcs of electricity that crackled around her fingers. Though she knew her power's emergence to be inevitable, she could not suppress the terror she felt at experiencing magic for the first time. It was unnatural, it was forbidden; its discovery by others would rend her life, possibly end it. She wasn't ready to follow the path that had been set before her by her god.

Still, she couldn't resist experimenting with her newfound abilities. Between bouts of insomnia that followed her troubling dreams, she would huddle in a corner of the docks and practice conjuring lightning in her hands. She got good enough to shoot minute jets of electricity from her hands, but she dared not push that ability further. Her discovery of metal's affinity for lightning happened partially on accident. Kendra wanted to see if she could charge objects with her lightning, perhaps to add flair to her traps when her adventure began. She first tested it out on her dagger. Though it took many tries before she succeeded, Kendra was able to sustain a weak charge in her dagger for up to several seconds at a time, a minute if she kept contact with the blade. She could not do this so easily with other materials; indeed, wood and cloth started smoking if she attempted to charge them.

Kendra never told Totem about her powers out of fear. She did mention her burning desire to join the next people who came from the sea, and that her time for adventuring was coming.

Theme Song (Optional): The title and thumbnail don't fit Kendra, but the song itself does. It's fun without being too lighthearted.

I like the foreboding dream bit you threw in there. The way I understand it it's a relatively common way the gods communicate with their chosen, even if not all of them have the gift of prophecy or whatnot. Seems to fit right in. We actually had a party-wide dream like that not long ago in the IC as well :P

I like this character. Her hometown would need to be changed, as Kjalarrgrove is inland, located in the midst of the woods. Berenk (the village the character's fleet is currently offshore of) would be the closest coastal settlement. Perhaps her father moved there after the divorce. It's about 20 miles away, so it wouldn't be an arduous trip. Other than that I don't see anything that needs reworking. The time given for when her dreams and powers started manifesting lines right up with when Watchtower and the Hellspawn began their campaign.

Accepted!

Indeed the gods do. Sleeping for the characters might get more unsettling as they spend more time in the Thin Isles, for Aigthryia is a grim, ancient part of the world; somewhere where fell forgotten things slumber.

Thank you! I figured it was a good way to incorporate her Questing Instinct and introduce her to the outside world.

What is the current state of Berenk (within the limits of what can be revealed for plot)?

Also, which language does Berenk speak?
