This is the signup thread for World Baseball Classic 55. If you have done this before, or have done other major competitions on NS Sports before but not the World Baseball Classic before, you know what you need to do for now. If this is your first time, then let me first welcome you to the competition. Right now, all you need to do is declare that your nation signs up, and then keep an eye on this thread as the sign up process progresses.
Users that have previously participated in a WBC are allowed to sign up a secondary nation (puppet). This puppet has to be declared by both the puppet and primary nation of the user (master).
The process will eventually lead to a host vote, and once we have a host, that nation will put out a schedule and lead us through the competition.

In order to be considered as a host, you must submit a bid. On NS Sports, the host is responsible for the day to day running of the tournament, which includes being able to reliably scorinate the competition. The World Baseball Classic is typically the second most roleplayed competition on the entire forum, behind the World Cup. Therefore, it is typically a competition that requires an experienced host. There are great competitions out there for first time hosts to get their feet wet, but like the World Cup, the World Baseball Classic is not really one of them, unless jointly bidding with an experienced partner. Having said that, there are no restrictions on a first time host submitting a bid.

A valid WBC bid must include, at the absolute minimum, how you plan on structuring the tournament and the method of scorination. If it does not, at minimum, include that, it will not be considered for voting.

Voting on WBC host bids is done by members of the World Baseball Classic Council. The members of the council can be found by using the applicable link in the signature of this account. You can also find the current ranks there.

HOST BID DEADLINE: Thursday, July 21st, at 8 pm UTC.

Projected Timeline: The host vote will be from July 21st to July 26th. So, look for an Everything Thread in early August if things go smoothly.

Well ... we're back!

INTRODUCTION
Sometime last year, some people at DISC [read: me] had an interesting concept idea for a World Baseball Classic. See, baseball was born in a big nation with lots of space between cities, with games played almost every day in a week. The concept of the Road Trip and the Home Stand are integral to baseball strategy and fan interaction in the domestic season. We thought it would be a very Cool idea to bring those concepts to the World Baseball Classic. The WBC often loses that zeal of road tripping - you have to fly damn near everywhere, and most of the time you only see a given opponent at your home ground one time. Even in the Classics which hold every game in the host nation, teams are constrained to the same couple stadiums and cities in their groups.

For WBC 55, Drawkland wants to bring that organic feeling to the highest level of baseball competition.

To do this, Drawkland will of course be hosting every game of WBC 55 within our borders, including the group stage in addition to the playoffs. Not just this, but every nation competing will be assigned a single Drawkian stadium to be their home ground. Rather than having every group in the same stadium or nearby cities and sharing stadiums, every team will have their own grounds to call home. Groups will be based in certain geographic regions within Drawkland, so teams and fans don't have to travel far between games.

Over the course of the group stage, fans and staff of the their team will be able to decorate their "home" venue to their liking to show their national spirit, with fan zones and small festival areas available to make every game an event. The logic for assigning venues will be dependent on a nation's rank, history in the WBC, proximity to Drawkland, and other factors. Nations will use their assigned venue for all games where they are designated the home team, through the quarterfinals. The semifinal, third place, and championship series will be hosted at big-name venues in Drawkland to ensure that large crowds can be drawn even if a nation from a small home venue happens to make it that far.

SCORINATION
Based on last Classic, it seems like the Snelweg formula is solid to use for future Classics. It presents a fair level of competitiveness, featuring a better balance between randomness and sensibility than the other available baseball formulas. Thus, I will scorinate WBC 55 using xkoranate 0.3.3 and the Snelweg baseball formula.

There will be a penalty for not posting a roster. Nations that do not post a roster will suffer a 10% decrease of their starting rank for each cutoff that they do not have a roster posted. This is subtractive, not multiplicative, so a nation that does not post a roster will have a rank of 0.00 by the end of the group stage (rather than 34.87% of their original rank). No worries, plenty of time will be given between the thread being opened and MD1 (probably 5-7 days), so everybody should have enough time to post by the first cutoff.

RP Bonus will be cumulative through the group stage. Between the group stage and playoffs, there will be a small - not major - degrading of RP bonus. This is to discourage early RPing and coasting through the playoffs. Quality preferred over quantity, of course, and good faith effort is much appreciated.

FORMAT SPECIFICS
This bid has been posted pretty early, so obviously we can't tell exactly how many teams will be signing up for this Classic. Right now, I am aiming to have X groups of 6 if possible. This has been standard since WBC 48 (the guy that hosted that edition is pretty cool btw), so it shouldn't be anything different from the norm. If groups of 6 aren't feasible, I will be flexible in the group size to fit the numbers we have more closely.

If we can roll with groups of 6, the group stage will be 20 games long (quad round robin, no series format). Games will be scorinated two per window, so it won't last any longer than the 10 game group stage we experienced last Classic. I felt like having a slightly longer group stage to give a little more space for storylines to develop, and plus IC'ly it makes sense as it gives fans more time to explore and make their "home" cities more familiar. If the groups of six don't pan out, I will likely stick with a quadruple round robin for whatever group size, but I reserve the right to change that if necessary.

I intend to have approximately half the field qualify for the playoffs. The exact amount will depend on what numbers we have for the tournament and what's workable. Every playoff series besides the championship will be best 3 out of 5, with the championship being best 4 of 7.

EXPERIENCE & CONCLUSION
Drawkland has hosted many events, including two World Cups, one each of the IBC, WB, and WBC, several other soccer tournaments, like a hundred collegiate competition conferences by now, as well as other miscellaneous events. Given that Drawkland successfully hosted World Baseball Classic 48 (which had a much more annoying format) to completion, it's a given that Drawkland can put on a good tournament for WBC 55.

Here's a quick recap of the major points in this bid:

• Entire tournament will be hosted in Drawkland, with each nation being assigned a specific Drawkian stadium to use as a home venue.
• Snelweg formula will be used. I'm aiming for a format with X groups of 6, and a 20-game group stage (2 games per cutoff, every 24 hours).
• There is a roster penalty (10% rank reduction per cutoff not posted). RP bonus is cumulative with a slight degrade prior to the playoffs.
