Welcome to the 17th International Baseball Slam in Super-Llamaland and South Newlandia!

The format:
All games will be played in Super-Llamaland or South Newlandia. The group stage will be played in four groups of 6, playing a double-round robin with two games for every cut-off. The top two teams per group advance to the playoffs, a single elimination bracket.

Tiebreakers:
The tiebreakers for both group stage advancement and playoff seeding will be, in this order: Group Stage placement (only for Playoff seeding), wins, H2H results, H2H run differential, overall run differential, RP Bonus (IC coin flip), OOC coin flip. If a tie between multiple teams must be broken and one team wins the tiebreaker at any stage, while the remaining teams are still tied, the tiebreakers start at the top of the list again to break the tie between the remaining teams.

Super-Llamaland IC Information

NATIONAL INFO

Super-Llamaland is a beautiful and diverse nation, from the serene forests of Kyrinson to the spectacular grey cliffs of Los-Juantos. Located in Eastern Esportiva, the nation of roughly forty-six million people is known for a successful democratic socialist government, some of the most environmentally-friendly policies in the world, and an absurdly well-funded educational system. The official language is English, although Arondic [OOC-ly comparable to Swedish], Yueyu [Mandarin], and Hicañan [Spanish] are all common. Llamaneans are known for their progressivism, education, environmentalism, and fanaticism for baseball.

Baseball is by far the most popular sport in the nation. Super-Llamaland's ten-year isolation from the rest of the world led to a decline in interest in the Llamanean Baseball League, as foreign star players such as Jeff Fitzhugh and Kayla Carey left the country, but at its peak it was one of the biggest leagues in the world. Now, Super-Llamaland has joined with neighbouring South Newlandia to run the even more-acclaimed Llamaphant Pro Baseball, while even local leagues have continued to maintain significant domestic interest.

STADIA

Four stadia, located in the cities of New Llama City, Emerald Springs, Kyrinson, and Los Juantos, will host IBS matches.

Tyler Rocke Memorial Stadium is located in downtown New Llama City, the Llamanean capital. Constructed in 1988, it holds 42,000 and has previously hosted the WBC30 Finals, the LPB All-Star Game, the LPB Multiverse Series, and a number of Baseball Club Championships. Formerly the home of the New Llama Cyclones, New Llama City's "second team" has taken the historic stadium over after the Cyclones have moved into a new stadium in the suburbs.

The capital of Super-Llamaland, New Llama City is known for its clean streets, modern architecture, bustling stock exchange, and strong universities. New Llama City is currently the nexus of Super-Llamaland’s fledgling bullet train system, which can take you from the City to any other host city within an hour and a half. It’s also home to some of the nation’s wildest nightlife, to many visiting managers’ dismay.

The Ultra-Dome is located in Emerald Springs, a medium-sized city in northern Super-Llamaland. It is a very new athletic complex, completed in 2010 and renovated in 2033, designed to host a number of sporting events. The 39,600 capacity is only for the baseball section of it, while it has also hosted the SuperLleague's Emerald City Harmony in the past, as well as WBC30 matches. The Ultra-Dome is host to the LPB's Emerald City Greens.

Named after its hot springs (which are, obviously, emerald in color), the city of Emerald Springs has become the technological center of the nation. It’s home to a number of fledgling startups at Innovation Park, one of the largest startup hubs in the world, as well as OuranosTech, the nation’s largest corporation of any kind. This gives the city a clean, modern atmosphere. Attractions-wise, it’s also home to the Emerald Tower, the nation’s tallest building, and the National Art Gallery.

Earnest Field is located in Kyrinson, near the northeastern coast of Super-Llamaland. Named after legendary Llamanean outfielder Jake Earnest, the stadium was built in 2025 for the Kyrinson Twin Pines. Recently renovated in anticipation of the IBS, its 46,000 capacity also makes it the largest and most modern of the four stadia hosting IBS matches.

Kyrinson’s location both near the coast and near the forest made it an economic hub for much of Super-Llamaland’s early history. More recently, though, the city has turned its efforts toward preservation, becoming the headquarters of the National Forest Reserve. The city itself is absolutely stunning - located in a valley at the edge of the forest, between beautiful Whetham Lake and the ocean, Kyrinson’s surroundings are one of the most beautiful sights in the entire nation.

Los-Juantos City Stadium is located in the city of Los-Juantos, on the southwesternmost point of Super-Llamaland. Although the 33,000-capacity field is a relatively new stadium, being built to celebrate the rebranding of the Peninsulara Kingfishers, it is believed to be replaced with an even bigger stadium in the future, and the IBS serves as a last goodbye for the soul of Peninsulara baseball. As the Kingfishers, the normal residents of the park, are incredibly bad at baseball, we hope that your teams will be able to provide better play than "LJCS" is accustomed to seeing.

Los-Juantos' location on the coast makes it a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming from all around to see the beautiful white seaside cliffs (on the western side of the peninsula) and white sand beaches (on the eastern side). It's also earned a reputation as a bit of a party city owing to its picturesque location and lower cost of living - hopefully your players won't be too distracted!

GEOGRAPHY & CLIMATE

Super-Llamaland has a wide range of climates and geographies. We range from flat, tropical Nikcoro in the south to the near-arctic, mountainous cities of Dinschria. However, the vast majority of Super-Llamaland is temperate and flat, with average temperatures at about eighty-three degrees in the summer and thirty-six in the winter. Super-Llamaland's coast, however, especially the southeast coast, has actually led to games being cancelled due to humidity. However, summer temperatures in the northern half of Super-Llamaland, which will host the majority of IBS matches, are generally warm, sunny, and pleasant.

TRANSPORTATION

The western suburbs of New Llama City's Arthur Moore International Airport, as well as Emerald Springs' Wagner International Airport, are both large regional hubs in Eastern Esportiva. Los Juantos' Peninsulara International Airport and Kyrinson's Bridges International Airport are smaller, but still very accessible from a variety of airlines and regions.

Within the country, Super-Llamaland has a wide range of eco-friendly public transportation, including the typical buses and subways that you would see in other places. Transportation is always cheap and usually free. A system of high-speed railways is currently being built, and high-speed rail service already exists between all four cities that will host matches. Taxis are nearly-extinct, and ride-sharing services are heavily regulated and less popular than public transportation.

South Newlandian IC Information

South Newlandia is a small Esportivan island with about four million inhabitants, located east of Super-Llamaland in the Sea of Llamaphants. South Newlandia is known for democracy, elephants, regulated capitalism and environmentalism, and the friendly population, happy to help you out if you run into any problems.
Getting around inside South Newlandia isn’t a huge problem, it is often more difficult to arrive in the first place. That’s the case with all islands, but South Newlandia has rather few flights and ships exiting and entering, mostly because of environmental regulations. Speaking of regulations; the sale of all drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, is illegal in South Newlandia.
When you arrive, the probably best options are the multiple high-speed trains that can get you almost everywhere in the country fairly quickly. If you don’t like trains, for some reason, there are also busses and cars to rent, but the streets aren’t always in perfect condition, and are far less convenient, to be honest.
The climate typically stays the same in South Newlandia throughout most of the year, with moderate winters and warm summers. In the places where games are hosted, temperatures around 15-25°C can be expected.
There are some wild animals in South Newlandia, but they will generally don’t disturb you if you don’t disturb them. Basically, just stay on the outlined paths in the forest and don’t do anything to anger animals, and you’ll be fine. Most of South Newlandias wild animals are friendly, like the elephants.

Stadiums:

Elephant Stadium (37,500), Elephant Valley
The biggest South Newlandian baseball stadium, located in the capital city in the Northwest, was upgraded multiple times since it was first built. The stadium is not only the home of the South Newlandian Elephants, but has also hosted multiple play-off series during WBC51.
Elephant Valley is also the biggest city in South Newlandia at about 600,000, and is known as a major hub for just about everything, including media, politics, and sports.

Ratzupalfu Dome (25,000), Ratzupalfu
Built from scratch in the last few years, the Dome is the height of South Newlandian engineering ingenuity. Located near the centre of the country, Ratzupalfu is surrounded by the South Newlandian jungle, a dense forest with many animals. The stadium has no domestic team playing here, except for the local college team – for now.
Ratzupalfu is also known for their college football team, the Egrets, and being the place to see, study, or snuggle South Newlandian wildlife.

Dolphin Stadium (12,500), Newport
It used to be the second-biggest stadium when it was built just over a decade ago; now, with South Newlandia rapidly building baseball parks, it’s just average. It’s the home of the Newport Dolphins.
Newport is the second-biggest city in South Newlandia, located on the East Coast, and as the name suggests, is a major trade hub; but the city also has various universities.

Seaside Park (14,000), Walstreim
Seaside Park is located, as the name suggests, right on the shore of Walstreim, located in the Southeast of South Newlandia. The location and architecture makes it a visually stunning stadium; it’s also the home of the Walstreim Stingrays.
Walstreim, the 3rd-biggest city in the country, is also known as the city most known for soccer in the country.

Quebec, Cabo Azure complete joint naval exercise on international waters, as regional instabilities continue among Rushmori states

SAO SIMONE, CABO AZURE - On May 3-5, 2056, The Royal Quebecois naval fleet, led by the aircraft carriers RQMS Imperator and Jubilee, concluded a successful naval exercise with Cabo Azure in Terranea sub-region of Rushmore. The two militaries have confirmed the news, an interesting notice in the times of regional instability and governmental changes in Rushmore over the last couple of years.

The two-day exercise named 'Operation Canary Thunder', one of the two annual joint-military exercises held by the Royal Quebecois Navy and those of its allied nations, marks the first joint drill to be held with Cabo Azure on the international waters. RQMS Imperator joined RQMS Jubilee in a rare, two-carrier exercise with the Azurean naval and coast guard vessels. This was then followed by open training exercises of amphibious invasion on the second day, and concluded without a fatality.

The Quebecois naval history in the region, marked by the historic victory of Southern Rushmori War of 1941-45, is nothing new. The Royal Quebecois Navy has held the annual exercise with Joint Forces of the Gatchingerrak Nations (JFGN) on the international waters of Eastern Vatmark and Western Terranea, and maintains close ties with the Rushmori dominions and allied states of the Quebecois Commonwealth.

This naval exercise, however, marks a departure from the usual trends of Quebecois diplomacy and military that have centred around its traditional allies and the Commonwealth states. Said drill came a year after Prime Ministers Arsene Kim and Federico Bravo signed an agreement promising to upgrade further military and economic protection in Sao Simone previous year, as well as to discuss ways to protect the island-state from prospective threats coming from larger states in the region.

The Royal Quebecois Navy's 2nd Fleet, when contacted, responded that the naval exercise was preparing both militaries for prospective cases of invasion or interference by an invading force, as well as prospective ways to prepare for possible situations in case of unexpected invasion, that may be used as a future example.

'There is no change from what we are already looking for,' said spokesman from the Navy.

Yesterday, Kim Ministry's Chair of the Royal Commission for Rushmore, Right Honourable Pierrette Dunn-Lessard, said that Joongyeong 'is always underway to consider all possible options to assess, expand and calculate' as it monitors ongoing and prospective matters of insecurity, in particular expansionist efforts taken by certain states, in the southern and southeastern sub-regions of Rushmore.

Kim, who is expected to fly to the Quebec-Sargossa Summit in Soluca next week, said that Joongyeong remains focused on providing stability and protections to states whose interests may be interfered by expansionist efforts of certain states, whose dirty claws are blood-stained and poorly-intentioned, and that Joongyeong remains open to individual efforts to expand the network of nations it would ally itself with.

The statement, left by Dunn-Lessard, suggests a particular stance taken by the Quebecois Government in times of regional instability among the Rushmori states, as the 'Cooper River Conflict', Nyowani Kitaran elections, and the rising instabilities in Pasarga have brought wide range of reactions among the public. Past weeks have seen no less of such display in the public, from the likes of social media campaigns involving Nyowani Kitara, public debates held by esteemed intellectuals and members of public, and burning Euran flags on public squares...

Notes
- Starting pitchers are not limited on pitch counts. They may be removed for situational reasons, i.e. bring in a righty or lefty, or use a relief pitcher with a different pitch mix, etc., but if the starter is having a Quality Start, there is a good chance he will stay in. However, Delaclavs also will use the "opener". While only M. Short has been designated for this purpose, other relievers or even starters can be used for the same purpose.
- Delaclavs do not use the designated hitter at any level; therefore, Delaclav pitchers can hit at a comparable level to any field player.
- About batting order: Dawson is the team's best power hitter, and he is used third and not fourth because it is important to the team's strategy that he can bat as often as possible, including the first inning. Additionally, Manzano is a better hitter than some of his teammates but is used as a "second leadoff", giving the Falcons an effective 9-1-2-3 turnaround, which is common in Delaclav baseball.

[Bohr]

The sport of baseball in Bohr is a pretty popular one, although no fully professional league has been created (yet). Instead, it thrives in the youth age groups, from 6 years old all the way to college (which, in Bohr, is three years, usually from age 20 to age 22). For a long time, the college scene was a mess of conferences and affiliations, with the result often being that no champion was able to truly be crowned. In 1990 (for reference, it’s currently mid-1994 in Bohr) ten of the top colleges basically said “fuck this”, and so the College Gold StarLeague (or CGSL) was formed, mainly covering baseball, both types of football, and basketball. This has made a lot of people very angry, but a lot more people are very happy. The current state of sports is probably not sustainable (on both ends of the spectrum; whispers of a professional baseball league continue to get louder, and the teams that got left out of the Starleague are seriously considering legal action), but for the time being it’s worked out extremely well; the final game of the 1994 baseball league championship set records for both television and gate receipts. The debut of Bohr baseball to the international stage only amplifies this.

The State of the CGSL
If you want to generalize things, you could call the history of Bohr college baseball a clash of lifestyles. On the one side, there’s the “ZJR” trio of Zephael College, Robertson University, and Jardin University; these three private schools, all located in and around the capital city of Becis, can trace their roots all the way back to the country’s founding, and have made up 3 of the top 5 in the Bohr academic rankings since that was even a concept. 25 years ago, they slowly began to deprioritize baseball, in favor of (association) football and basketball, but when the Starleague started and the baseball teams finished 5th, 9th, and 10th, the athletic department went the other way and tried to pour as much money as they could back into the teams, leading to a lot of talent without a modern infrastructure. In that 20-year interim, the “partition schools” (public colleges designed to give the more rural areas a flagship place of education), such as the NWP (northwest partition) Eagles, the SWP (guess) Pillars, and the Incol River Kingfish have become the championship leaders. Somewhat ironically, those schools have treated baseball more academically than the academic powerhouses ever did; critics have called a team like NWP “soulless” and “robotic”, although nobody can deny their success.

Coaching Staff
The Head Coach (don’t call him a “manager”) of this momentous team is Herm Ingram of Incol River, who, at 73, is also the oldest coach in the Starleague. Despite this, he’s built the first dynasty of the Starleague era. The Kingfish have won three of the last four titles, including the last two in a row, on the back of incredible strikeout pitching (and no real pitch counts) and a patient, powerful offense; a blueprint that he would love to follow for this IBS. Ingram has brought his entire assistant staff to the tournament as well, most notably pitching coach Rod Kennedy, 51, who has been thought of as Ingram’s natural successor for a long time.

The top player and leadoff hitter on a somewhat disappointing NWP team, Singer nevertheless led the CGSL in batting average and hits, as well as getting a few highlight-reel outfield assists for good measure. Despite being 6’3” and having the build of a gridiron linebacker, he’s never been able to translate that into the kind of power that you might expect, but he’s a very valuable player nevertheless.

Chris Heeley / 2B / 22 / Donnell Tech / R / R
The only non-starleague player in the starting lineup, Heeley had an incredible 1994, with his on-base percentage of .457 leading Donnell Tech to their best season in decades.Some have said that his batting style wouldn’t work in the Starleague or against higher-level competition, as pitchers universally give up less walks and have better command overall, but that shouldn’t take away from Heeley’s talent. A lot of people wonder how the big schools missed out on him.

Stuw Rindt / 1B / 22 / Zephael / L / L
The #1 prospect in Bohr as a 18-year-old, “Big Stew” combined water-tower power with a veteran’s feel for the game; it was a surprise when he committed to nerd school among nerd schools Zephael instead of staying home (and foul play has long been suspected but never proven). A knee injury has been Rindt’s one enemy over the past few years, keeping him out of most of the 1993 season, but when he’s been healthy, he’s been the best hitter in the league.

Danny Almerian / CF / 22 / Incol River / R / R
Somewhat of an oddity among Bohrian center fielders, Almerian is not particularly quick, but makes up for it with great intuition and technique. At the plate he’s similar; most pitchers’ least favorite player to see in the batters’ box, Almerian’s bat control and ability to foul off pitches he doesn’t like is unmatched (and extremely annoying).

Saul Bass / (LF/RF) / 21 / Zephael / L / L
Bass debuted a season after Rindt on the same team with a similar look and stance, and as such was nicknamed “Little Stew”, despite the logical inconsistencies that that may entail. He’s a much less disciplined hitter than Rindt, and is the quiet academic to Rindt’s gregariousness, but has the same type of lefty power.

Ryan Edgar / 3B / 21 / Southwestern Polytechnic / R / R
Edgar is an incredibly polished defensive third baseman, well-known for his reaction time (allegedly .15 seconds) and flexibility. His hitting is... less polished; one journalist has described his swing as being like “a baby bird attempting to fly for the first time”, while another went for “trying to drive a car with three flat tires”. As much flak as it gets, it’s been surprisingly successful, although he can’t get much power out of it.

Arthur Brookline / SS / 20 / Jardin / R / R
The BGSL’s young player of the year, Brookline led the league in stolen bases while having excellent range at SS (although he was still error-prone). He’s very much a free-swinger, which, while he’s not going to draw walks any time soon, can lead to some great moments. One of the key moments of Jardin’s impressive run was when Brookline, in a key spot, lined a breaking ball that had bounced before reaching the plate into left-center for a double.

Herm Ingram loves having a catcher who can call a game on his own, and Marties can do that with the best of them. An incredible mind for the game, Marties also has an arm good enough to discourage even great base-stealers from trying to take off. His offense is less polished, but he still has a healthy amount of power, although the dreaded label of “mistake hitter” has begun to circulate.

Conner Fox / RHP / 22 / Incol River
The undisputed star of the team, Fox is a picture-perfect pitcher; 6’5”, with a powerful fastball, a beautiful 12/6 curve, and a very good slider, Fox became the first player in 17 years to win the award for Best Pitcher two years in a row. If there are any weaknesses, it’s mental; he relies almost totally on Marties and his coaches for pitch sequencing and the like, and his performance in big games has been notably shakier.

Nichol Grieffen / LHP / 21 / Southwest Partition
Although Grieffen lacks some velocity, he makes up for it with pure variety; he’s well-known for experimenting (or in his words, “fucking around”) in real time, mixing up arm angles, grips, and sometimes entire deliveries to be infuriating for opposing hitters and his own catchers/coaches alike. This experimenting shouldn’t take away from his talent though; his pure control is some of the best in the Bohr college scene.

Johnathan Kingston / RHP / 21 / Robertson
Kingston is superficially similar to Fox, but lacks some of the control. Instead, he’s a pure power pitcher; his fastball is fast, live, and mean, and although his other pitches (a changeup and a slider) aren’t great, the threat of the fastball is enough to get some bad swings. Robertson hasn’t been great in the recent years, and so Kingston doesn’t have much experience with pressure, but speed is speed, right?

James Ko / RHP / 22 / Jardin
Unfortunately for writers that would want to make jokes about his last name, Ko isn’t really a strikeout artist. Instead, he’s the classic ground-ball pitcher; his sinking fastball and circle change are heavy and hard to drive, and he’s perfectly willing to go low in the zone for as many pitches as necessary until you prove that you can drive the ball. This team’s quality infield defense will be a boon to Ko, who otherwise often doesn’t quite have the stuff to get strikeouts with regularity.

Baseball in Montesina is taken quite seriously, despite the modest size of the local economy. The president who has been governing the country for nine years, José Martínez Ubiña, is a baseball fanatic, and has guaranteed all sorts of help in strengthening the sport in the country.

The main cities in the country are San Bertrán, which is the capital; Iturralde, which is part of the conurbation, Nueva Vizcaya, which is further north and is known for its warm water beaches, as well as Tortugas, a city on the island of the same name. Then there is San Martin, further south, but still on the coast. The interior is the main production center of the country, and cities like Guayama, Molinos and Mandarinas are large extensions of land are major wine producers for export. Each of these cities has a team in the "Liga Mayor de Béisbol", with the exception of San Beltrán, which has two teams.

The national team, named "Mineros" (The Miners) is participating in its first international competition, as part of the preparation process for the Olympic qualifiers and the World Baseball Classic. For the latter, it must compete for a spot against the nations of Lisander, Saint Ianina and Kikunomi.

The team has players from the eight teams in the Liga Mayor de Béisbol, selected by President Ubiña Manager Hernán Gallese.

The previous summer saw the Grim Reapers, just six months after the Grim Reapers' miraculous third-place run on the WBC-54 in Zwangzug, retire their two greatest infielders' numbers to the rafters of the Commonwealth Park, Songak, the longtime home of the Quebecois national baseball team. The numbers coincided with their return from Cassadaigua to their home teams in Kingston Tigers and Saguenay Lions. It was a fitting nod to two legends and lifelong friends who have played on rival schools and clubs all their lives since high school and into Cassadaigua, and who have represented the finest peak of the Quebecois baseball. We will all remember their decadelong heroics, especially the runs they had on the WBC 53 and 54.

Levinson Webster, a former Grim Reapers' infielder (most remembered as a 2B besides Gregory Reynolds-Walusimbi), gets a nod after solid tenure for the Under-23 team as an infielding coach. Fortunately for him, he will be backed up by a solid cadre of fellow collegiate and professional coaches, most notably in Sung Joon-Yeol. Sung, a former Grim Reapers' coach whose tenure had ended early in a disastrous WBC 52 campaign that coincided with many off-turf controversies beyond his control, is a veteran coach on his own game, and is a great helper to all the young coaches out there.

That said, the top guy on the rotation is Nahuel Fornacieri, a left-handed pitcher out of Univ. de Abitibi - an all-arounder with a S-level changeup and A-level four-seam, slider and curve. With his 197cm frame still developing, there is a positive hope that Fornacieri will one day be able to join the lineage of superstar lefties that go back to none other than.....Keith Bankosky.

Interesting situation here, especially with the Olympics in less than a year to go. Both guys, as solid catcher prospects, have their pros and cons - Errol Kim has a massive power hitter potential, but while he blocks really well, he could be better on framing. Jocelyn N'Diaye, on the other hand, is a defensively-minded catcher whose framing ability and feet are noticeable.

Solid group of infielders with strengths in positions the senior Grim Reapers have to replace - 1B and 3B. Noel Jackson's an agile, lean third-baseman who's hit 18 home runs with Joongyeong Bears this past season, while Yves-Francois Agunbiade, more versatile player, is a contact hitter who's hit .321 and 17 home runs and 0.867 OPS with the Kingston Blue Jays. And while it remains to be seen on whether Jackson can succeed to the expectations left by the now-retired legendary Heo Myeong-Shin, or if Agunbiade can guarantee himself a starting spot over Samuel Maybin, now a cleanup hitter on the senior team who Yves-Francois has modelled his own game after....remains to be seen.

As for the other infielders, it's a bit more straightforward situation for them. Joh Jae-Ho's a very reliable (think of Kim Ha-Seong) shortstop for the Lions' team who you shouldn't expect much on registering hits, but he'll more than not erase those coming your way. Belanna Latham and Diana Hwang Pinela are not as outstanding with their ranges, but they have what Joh lacks in athleticism and speed - their fast feet will be what's used often. Mairead Hernandez is a highly utile infielder.

Arriving just as Samuel Carlini-Mwambutsya's announced his national team retirement, while Bellefeuille and Kang had crossed the wall of 30, this is a group of all-arounded prospects who have broken early into the pros or the college level. As with the infielders, there aren't as many overlaps with these players - Kweon Hyeok-Joon's a guy who's hit 20-20 the previous season, and has already played a part in the legendary WBC 53 team a year ago as the 4th outfielder of the team. He has solid arms and decent coverage, though whether he aims to stay in CF or bulk up and go for a RF remains to be seen in future-time. Cecily Maybin, the younger sister of Quebecois international Samuel, is an agile, OPS gal with decent outfield range, while Joh Se-Ho is a pure power guy with limited range. Elaine Courtenall and Kamilla Estrada are solid backups who have some room to grow into.

Notes on our Under-22 Grim Reapers

Traditionally, the Grim Reapers have taken the pitcher use with great dose of liberalism. Traditionally the senior team has let the starter to go well into seventh or even eighth inning. For this team, as an Under-22 side, there will be an absolute pitch count of 100 pitches, with preferable range of 75-85 pitches to save the pitchers' arms. That said, it is just as likely for the starting pitcher to get yanked within first three innings if one allows too many runs early into the game, which of course have happened before. In those cases, expect at three to five pitchers to be used for remainder of the game.

The Grim Reapers, as with their equivalents in other sports, are very aggressive- it's in their playing colours and will stay like that forever. While they do lack fast players, most of the outfielders and some infielders do have very good sense in stealing bases or making right decisions when taking risks, so while an occasional whoopsie-daisie with early outs do happen, it's not be all end all. Of course, we also have to remember that this is counted into the selection criteria, which means that both the infielders and outfielders are expected to be proficient in defence and even prepare for multiple positions. This is more the case with infielders than outfielders, but both have seen flexible use of such players before anyway.

Of course, there is a bit of complicated situation with the Quebecois history and geographic realities. Traditionally, baseball has been a fairly racially and regionally ubiquitous sport in Quebec, though there are strong regional and ethnic elements that are noticeable to it. Traditionally, there is strong sense of regional pride that derives from many of the iconic QBO franchises that have defined its history, as six regions traditionally dominate in both high school and pro baseball output, which reflects well into the first round of QBO Drafts. There is somewhat divide between those of Central Quebec (Montreal Twins vs. Quebec Bears), Southwest (Kingston Tigers vs. Kingston Blue Jays), Manitoba (California City Dodgers), Southeast (Halifax Giants), Northwest (Attawapiskat Wiz) and Northeast (Ottawa Eagles). There are minor stylistic differences between the regions and how their players' play, but those don't factor as much as how they used to be. Ethnically, the sport does have more Korean-Quebecois players in general rule of thumb, though that means little in this day and age where most Quebecois, whether Indigenous, Caucasian, Korean or of other Commonwealth origins, are fairly mixed-raced. Still, Korean is the lingua franca of the baseball diamond and that continues to be a defining feature of the Quebecois baseball scene as whole.

International Baseball Slam about to begin,

The 17th International Baseball Slam will be getting underway, and once again we are seeing a team from Cassadaigua be entered in it. This competition allows for a variety of different rosters, but the Cassadagan Association for Baseball chooses to use it as a U-18 tournament. As such, the Fillies have never won the competition, and haven’t come close on many occasions. While many other nations also choose to use it as a juvenile tournament, the Cassadagan approach has always been about developing players and seeing what they can do this kind of level. Per the manager, Samantha Owens, “You want to win games, and you want to put the players in a position to win games. But at the same time, CAB has us here to showcase young players either for the upcoming entry draft, a future draft, or players that have already been drafted.”

All 17-year old players are having their draft come up a couple weeks after the scheduled conclusion of the tournament, but there’s not quite as many of them on the roster. We are seeing more 18-year olds this year, so all of them have already been drafted into the CBL. #1 overall pick, Steffie Rhodes, played in the IBS last time and felt it helped her get drafted early. “I thought that I personally had a good tournament, and while that is never the approach you want to have in a team game, I knew it could help me, and it did. It’s fun now to be on the team with the players who are going to be in this coming draft, or the next one. Because, I have been there and can try to help.” Possible #1 overall pick this year, outfielder Krystal Barclay, says she is not thinking about the draft implications, “I am here to win games with some other great young people. There’s no reason to think that we can’t do it. I want everyone status as a draft eligible player to skyrocket, not just mine. We do that by winning.”

The team does feel confident, and due to their ages, we don’t think there is a lot of distractions going on within the team, concerning the Cooper River affairs. Maybe we won’t have to talk about that all too much.

Across Kavanis, fathers wistful for their glory days on the diamond, mothers fondly remembering the chaotic excitement of a Little League game, are seeing their sullen teens increasingly drift away from the game, towards video gaming and social media. Recent excitement over a seeming resurgence of baseball-related texts in teen Whatsapp and SnapChat groups hides a darker secret: that the vocabulary of baseball is being used to secretly communicate about, not the smell of cut grass and pine tar, but something far more insidious.

Getting On Base e.g. "I only got to first base last night" or "I think we're going to third base at Tina's party"

First base: Your teen may be experimenting, perhaps trying out a few chapters from Samuelson or Mankiw.

Second base: Things are getting hot and heavy as your teen begins to think more critically about price elasticity. Give them some privacy unless you want to walk in on them experimenting with a supply and demand curve on their own!

Third base: Here's where you need to start to thinking about talking with your teen about protection. Perhaps by explaining that although it's OK to support the effort market hypothesis, it's worth exploring some of the critical literature on the subject too?

Home run / scoring: It's happened. Your teen has begun advocating for replacing central bank mandates with NGDP targeting.

The sky is the limit for King, who went to the Saints with the fourth overall pick, which was also the spot he took on the South Newlandia One Big Board. The extremely tall starting pitcher has all the velocity you can ask for along with a lethal slider, and is the only rookie here that is practically made to be a real Elephant one day, too.

SP2: Michael Prakash (RHP, 19) (Kyrinson Cosmos)

Prakash, selected 9th by the Cosmos after initially being the 13th player on the Big Board, is the only pitcher even close to King in raw potential, but while he has a great slider/change-up pitch mix that generates ground balls for days, he struggles locating the pitches, and frequently issues too many walks.

SP3: Lio Günther (RHP, 20) (Malidridad Mariners)

Günther was the 17th player on the Big Draft Board, but in a draft where pitchers flew off the board, he was picked 12th by the Mariners. In college, he made a name for himself by being extremely good in high leverage, but like Prakash, he does struggle with too many walks on occasion.

Closer: Mark Hughes (LHP, 20) (Denison Dynamo)
While the starting rotation is, with the exception of King, full of righties, the bullpen has a bunch of Southpaws. Hughes, selected 19th after initially being ranked 11th, specialises in short leverage, being a great teammate, and getting K’s.

Brandon Jackson (RHP, 17) (Elephant Valley United)
Jackson is a bit of a special case. The young teenager with sky-high potential was ranked 7th and taken 6th, earning him a trip to the capital as the second starting pitcher off the board. Like he will for Elephant Valley, he’ll come from the bullpen to start out; with his off-speed stuff needing some work.

Matthew Harvey (LHP, 17) (Sophie City Monarchs)
Harvey is a similar case to Hughes, just a bit younger, and less refined in his abilities; but the Monarchs took a chance on the 14th-graded player at that very spot, arguably a bit of a reach with many other talented guys still on the board.

Divyansh Thakur (LHP, 19) (Malidridad Mariners)
Thakur went to the M’s with the 32nd pick, originally ranked 29th. The teenager is known for his ability to remain calm under pressure – definitely a plus, but also a testament to how often he’s under pressure in the first place, with too many fly balls leaving the yard.

Ander Parra (LHP, 20) (Walstreim Stingrays)
Parra fell outside the first 48 picks and eventually landed with the Rays. The Big Board had him 45th, but it took a bit longer until anyone was willing to take a chance at the small pitcher that also often walks too many men.

Sofia Rasmussen Löfgren is the daughter of two Llamanean parents, but her South Newlandian maternal grandmother enabled her to join up with the Rookie Elephants. After being considered the #2 prospect on the Big Board, she fell to seventh and the Renaissance; nevertheless, she is elite behind and at the plate, having mastered plate discipline as few players do at her young age.

Toni Schäfer was the number one prospect in the draft, and the Dynamo made her exactly that. With outstanding abilities offensively and defensively, as well as bringing a good bit of speed to the table, Schäfer is the latest in a long line of South Newlandian weapons at 1B, with her ability to hit from both sides being another valuable asset.

(2B) Andrea Pellegrino (20, R/R) (Elephant Valley Homers)

Pellegrino landed with the Homers after being drafted 11th overall after being 8th on the Big Board; the small second basewoman possesses good speed, good hitting, and solid fielding. She doesn’t do anything at an elite level, but she’s gonna get the job done.

On the fifth floor of a reasonably-affordable-but-not-luxury South Newlandian hotel, pitching coach Rod Kennedy knocked on the door to room 502. "It's open", came the immediate reply, and so Rod opened it to see one of the greatest coaches in Bohrian baseball history. The fact that Herm Ingram was shirtless, sat up at the front of the bed, and squinting at the TV screen did not seem to bother Rod, as he :
"It's a foreign country, you know. Gotta remember to lock the doors."
"C'mon, the folks here are nice. Besides-I travel light anyway. Unless someone here is a big fan of high school Bohr baseball, I think we'll be just fine."
"Fair enough. Speaking of which", as Rod turned to the TV, "you find footage on the Abahnfleft team? I've checked all my typical sources and gotten stone nothing."
"Nah, figured I'd just put the 1993 Championship game 1 on again. For Conner's sake, you know?" As if on cue, the at-bat that both coaches had probably seen a hundred times played, and they both stayed quiet to watch it one more time. Top of the 7th here, game tied at 6, and a runner on 1st after an uncharacteristic leadoff walk from Conner Fox. Casper Ryan up to bat now; he's hit just .224 for the season. Here's the pitch... Conner comes out of the stretch, goes all the way over the top, but his release point is early. The ball sails a bit high, right where Ryan likes it, and CRACK
Herm pauses the tape and turns to Rod, who is shaking his head. "We still won that series, you don't need to get all worked up about it. So what was it you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Look, Herm, with all due respect-"
"You're going to raise your voice, aren't you? Just get it over with." Rod takes a deep breath, and starts shouting. "Why the fuck did you bring our entire staff here? High school championships are tomorrow-Tomorrow! It's literally the most important part of the year for recruiting, and we're in a random foreign country doing nothing. You could've at least brought a mixed staff; get Whitaker from NWP, one of the Weaver analytics guys, even the RJZ team. Is anyone back home even going to watch us? Can they even watch us? It just feels like"-Rod takes another breath-"a waster of time." There's silence in the dimly-lit room for a few moments. Then Herm speaks up once again. "I'm glad you got this off your chest, and I understand what you're saying. I'll talk about it more in a couple weeks, but in the meantime, think about it more. And find stuff about the Buccaneers; I keep hearing that they're actual pirates, but that can't be true, can it?"

Not a bad start, but not a great one: New Eestiball goes 1-1 over first two games

New Eestiball got off to an okay start at IBS 17.

In their first game, they won, defeating Sarzonia off of 6 innings from 661, only allowing 2 in the 6th, and a 1st-inning homer from 845.

Scoring summary:

2nd inning: 216 singled to right. 2B runner scored.
6th inning: Sarzonia doubled to center field. 1B and 2B runners scored.

Unfortunately, not all games can be wins, and the Babylonian Blizzards made sure of that, taking a 5-4 win and holding off a late rally from the Doorknobs.

527 was pulled in the fifth after allowing a two-run double and a two-run single in the 3rd.

The Dreamers completed their first two games! Man, I can't believe we're in the IBS again. And rumors have it that we will be entering the Classic later this year. Exciting stuff.

Here are the highlights:

Dreamers 5, Pirates 4: The Pirates got an early lead, Nappo getting a 1RBI double in the 2nd and a 2RBI double in the 4th, while Wasnogood scored a 1RBI single in the 4th. But they managed to blow it in the bottom of the 8th. The throwing error committed by the Pirate left fielder and that erroneous ball call during Harrison's at-bat did not help of course. Joyner got a solo home run, and both Koizumi and Sharõ scored 2RBI singles each. Savatyé gave up 4 runs over 7 innings in his start. Foster secure the win by giving up no runs during that magical 8th inning. Jak gave up no runs in the last inning to nab the save.

Super-Llamaland U21s 3, Dreamers 1: Gardner went thru 5 innings with only one run, a home run by Jósélẽ Sãsõ in the top of the 4th. I must admit it was kind of weird to see a pitcher only going five deep after such a fine performance, but I guess that is how baseball is played in the bigs. Mari shutout the Llamaneans for 5 innings before giving up a 1RBI single to Morales and a 2RBI single to Sammartino, securing the loss. Scully got the win by giving up no runs for 3 innings. It doesn't help that even when they do get on base, the Dreamers seem to keep throwing it away trying to steal second.

Redmont Republic: Amusements
I attended the "home game" in New Llama City against the Buccaneer Pirates. It was a beautiful city, very reminiscent of Redmont actually, except cleaner, and the streets were filled with cars. Tyler Rocke Memorial Stadium was rich with international sports history, and I enjoyed reading all the plaques and looking at all the memorabilia on display before the game.
When the players were announced, I couldn't help but grimaced at all the corporate logos defacing the Dreamers' uniforms. The government could have funded the national team, and we can avoid all this sponsorship business, but what can we expect from having neoliberals in charge? We just got to grin and bear the manager awkwardly shilling DRM-free books in his post-game speech.
But all that melted away when the game actually started, and we all get into the familiar rhythm of hits, walks, and outs. At one point the Dreamers were down four to nothing, but Joyner lead off the 8th with his trademark bomb into the stands, heralding a comeback win. It just goes to show that the game is never over until the last out.

WE MUST CONTROL OUR BORDERS

Kavanis may have avoided getting lost in the wilds of Ratzupalfu, leaving the Dome with 2 wins from 2, but Hardip Joshi, coach of the national youth team the “Kinder Kumquats”, isn’t entirely happy with the performance. “Our batters bailed us out a bit, not a great day out for the pitchers,” he said of the double-header. “The aggression was there, but the control wasn’t. We have to control the borders of the strike zone better.” Kavanese pitchers walked seven batters in each of the two games, and Joshi says that level of control “isn’t going to cut it against disciplined teams”. He backed his pitchers’ tactics in going for strikeouts and trying to paint the outside corner, and admitted catcher Avondré Small “could have done better” with his framing. “When it’s not just one pitcher missing the corner but pitcher after pitcher, it’s time to start thinking about whether some better framing might move the question a bit,” he said.

The poor control was a feature of both games from the outset. Given the start in Game 1, staff ace Manveer Singh gave up a run immediately without a hit, loading the bases on walks and then throwing a wild pitch off the plate that Small couldn’t handle. Reliever Rahsaan Mohammad walked two in the sixth to set up an RBI single. Switch-pitcher Yair Levitt (throwing left) gave up a solo home run in the 9th, but it didn’t spark a rally as Miiko Fujino, the only female member of the Kinder Kumquats, came in and got two strikeouts to end the game. Kavanis’s batters recorded fewer hits, walks, and total bases than their opponents, but made more efficient use of their scoring opportunities. Jacob Jones led off the fourth with a single and scored on a Tom Davis double; Davis and Akiva Silberstein then pulled off a double steal to induce a throwing error, with Davis scoring, before Cody Murphy roped a double to drive in Silberstein. Nweku Chikelu then led off the 8th with a weak ground ball that the third basemen threw into the stands, pinch-hitter Ash O’Conahan singled, and Davis hit his second RBI double of the game for what turned out to be the winning runs.

It proved to be a similar story in Game 2. Starting pitcher Zac Lazzarini, known for his kissing of his St Christopher medal before every pitch, might have had better luck praying to St Anthony. He lost batters outside in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th, and in each inning the walked runner ended up scoring, on RBI singles in the 1st and 3rd and a throwing error from Chikelu in the 6th, whereupon Lazzarini was pulled. He still recorded the win as Kavanis had built a 6–3 lead by that point. It was a less than clean finish to the game, in every sense: although Kavanis extended their lead to 11–3, relievers Boukary Koumare and Frankie Matsutani both gave up ground-rule-double RBIs in the 8th and 9th, Matsutani’s scoring 2 runners, after well hit flyballs landed in patches of scat left on the outfield by wandering wild elephants from the nearby jungle reserve. Earlier, Davis hit the team’s first home run of the tournament, a solo shot in the 1st to deep center right, and then came back in the 3rd to notch an RBI single, driving in Jacob Jones. In the 5th it was the Kavanese turn to benefit from some lack of control as Silberstein and Murphy drew bases loaded walks; in the sixth Davis homered for a second time, driving in Jones again with a bomb over the left-field wall; Murphy cleared the fences with a solo shot in the 7th; and Davis capped a magical day with a grand slam in the 8th to deep dead center.

After a long-ass wait which saw a New Age take over TJUN-ian Baseball, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were finally back and ready to play some motherfucking baseball. The return of the youth side always means that our long wait for another WBC is almost over but in a group stage filled with 5 quality opponents to play, Vojtěch Heyrovský and his younger brother Josef know that this group stage will certainly be long and arduous. However, this team is filled to the rafters with potential and both of them are hopeful they can show it off...but how did our opening two games go?

How this IBS works is that our two games are split into "home" and "away", with our "home" games in South Newlandia and our "away" games in Super Llamaland. Our "home" venue for this IBS will be Seaside Park in Walstreim, a venue of 14,000 that is certainly appealing to the eye. It hosted our opening day game as Maddison "Missy" Jembembe suited up to take on the Nova Anglicana Lions - who need no prior introduction at all. We got off to the best possible start thanks to a 2-run bomb from Palila Kalawai’a before it quickly became 2-1 in the 2nd. We seemed to love to score in intervals of two this game as two more bombs define our game, one in the 4th via Khin Marlar Tun and another in the 7th, as a response to a 2nd NA run, by debutant Luke Jaxon. This 6-2 was certainly the best way to start and a good sign that the new recruits haven't changed the quality of this team for the worse.

Our "away" venue turned out to be Los-Juantos City Stadium, a 33,000-seater that is relatively modern but already on the way out in the LPB era. Our opponents were the U22 Grim Reapers from Quebec and Shingoryeo, another youth team from a string baseball nation that many felt would be our direct competition in this group. Yolande Sirapui would be thrown into his IBS against Krista Gallant-Jamison, someone 4 years older than our #2 who also looked good on the mound. This contest (which had the DH in effect, by the way) would be a complete 180 of the one against the Lions as the U22s took the U21s to the cleaners thanks to a 5-run stretch in 3 innings - via an RBI double by Errol Kim, an RBI double by Cecily Maybin and a 3-run bomb by Belanna Latham. Martina Andrade de Souza restored some pride with a 2-run bomb in the 6th but by then, the damage had already been done and the Reapers cruised to the 6-2 win.

A 6-2 win and a 6-2 loss means we start our campaign 2nd in the group thanks to head-to-head over the Lions. Up next, we will "host" the Victoriana Falcons from Delaclava before facing the San Isidro Labrador Jornaleros "on the road". Both those sides are also 1-1, so a few ties will certainly be broken over the next double-header. GO CUBS GO!

EXTRA-EXTRA: QBO Announces Significant Salary Cap Increase ahead of Grim Reapers' trio declaring FA

SAO SIMONE, CABO AZURE - The QBO has announced and informed its 16 teams its adjusted plan for the projected salary cap and luxury tax levels ahead of the 2055 season.

The salary cap, a significant increase from first 5 years of the eight-year QBO-QBOPA CBA agreement in place, will amount to Q£115 million ($230 million NSD), according to the QBO Commissioner's Office. The luxury tax line will be placed at Q£128 million ($256 million NSD), while the salary floor is set at Q£75 million ($150 million NSD).

The figures, based on the expected revenue and attendance increase, as well as the QBO's expected signing of national television deals for the next six-year period this offseason, are viewed to be Q£3 million ($6 million NSD) higher than others on salary cap and luxury tax. The salary cap for the 2054 season was Q£112 million ($224 million NSD), while the luxury tax is Q£125 million ($250 million NSD).

The salary floor, however, have stood true to the expected lines.

This increase to the salary cap, while not a single-time occurrence in the history of the league, is a significant one of own. This is partly due to the recent sagas on the free-agency period. Grim Reapers' legends Heo Myeong-Shin, Theo-Alexande Pinson and Baek Nam-Soo have all declared free agency following the recent instabilities in the operations of the Cassadagan Baseball League (CBL).

With the free agency period having ended weeks ago in the Llamaphant Pro Baseball (LPB), which now includes associations from neighbouring Anaia nations Chromatika and Ko-oren, the three players, who have each played an irreplaceable part in the Grim Reapers' historical WBC 54 run to a third-place finish, are expected to hit the QBO free agency market.

Heo, whose wife Naomi coaches for Kingston Stars of the QOVO.1 League, is a no-brainer. Both the public and the insiders expect the third-baseman, whose number 10 has stayed retired with hometown Kingston Tigers while he was in Cassadaigua for past eight seasons, to sign on a major paycut. He is expected to retire a Tiger, and hopefully get his number properly raised, a fourth Tiger to be given this honour, to the Mudeung Field.

Baek, a lifelong Levis Wyverns fan who has expressed his love for the club, has never been drafted in the QBO Draft as he had signed with the Victoriaville Venom while an eighteen year old. He too is expected to Levis Wyverns on the first day of free agency, though on a rumoured mega-deal due to the 26-year old's age and national team performance. As for the length of his contract, however, less is certain about it - this may depend on a prospective free-agency market for the LPB, which is expected to open in two-year's time.

34-year old Pinson, however, is less certain about his free agency future. Currently three clubs - his old club Saguenay Lions, hometown club Saint John Green Sox, and the league powerhouse California City Dodgers - are expected to vie for his services.
