Batter Up!: We Love The Number 6 Apparently

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jul 12, 2022 1:02 pm

After a convincing win came before a convincing loss, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were 1-1 after the opening two games and in a bit of an interesting mood. Their 6-2 win over the Lions certainly felt good and a sign that these young guns were certainly potential stars...but their 6-2 defeat at the hands of the U22 Grim Reapers showed that while they were certainly good, they still had some things to learn before jumping to the Battin' Jags in the future. Vojtěch Heyrovský didn't mind the pain though...every lesson counted in building TJUN-ia's stars of tomorrow and if Ls had to be taken, then so be it...but would any more come in the 2nd double-header.

Up first at Seaside Park was a 15 y.o. vs a 25 y.o. in the only tournament that this can be legal as Joseph "JoJo" McAlbo took on Seth Stenrick in our contest with the Victoriana Falcons, the domestic champs of Delaclava. Ben Phillips' side had to earn their way to the IBS and that can always be a dangerous combination but when Seo Ji-kyo started us off with a 3-run bomb, that unease just vanished into thin air. Of course, Cody Brewer would respond almost instantly before a tight lull in the scoring would bring some much-needed stability. This would last until the 6th when Palila Kalawai’a decided we needed a 5-1 lead before the scoring when back and forth until the end of the game. Holly Davids would bring home McAlbo as our final run via an RBI double and the 6-3 final score was certainly taken.

Then it was back to Los-Juantos City Stadium to take on the Jornaleros from San Isidro Labrador, a nation we were certainly unfamiliar with going into proceedings. And then we managed 5 runs in two innings, thanks to a 3-run blast from starting pitcher Maddison "Missy" Jembembe and a 2-runner from debutant Fernando Rodrigo Viera. They managed to add two to their total before Holly Davids brought home Jembembe for the final score of the game - 6-2 this time, and back into 2nd we go.

Apparently, the limit of what we can score in a baseball game is 6 runs. All 3 of our wins saw us score that exact amount while we scored 2 in our defeat. Is that our actual limit or just a coincidence? Only time will tell as we prepare for the midway section of this IBS - "at home" against Die Göttlichen Schlagers of The Divine Sonne and a rematch with Nova Anglicana "on the road". The battle for Top 2 is certainly going to be tight and as such, every single game will certainly count. GO CUBS GO!

San Isidro Labrador Roster IBS XVII

This is San Isidro Labrador's third foray into international baseball, and they are determined to show how their unique brand of baseball works. Expect them to shake things up a little. All players have three names, as per Hispanic tradition, but for ease, only two names have been presented here.

Pitching Staff (throw, age, LPB team, pitch mix)

Cienteros

RHP José María Batanero, 32, Estrellas del Oeste, fastball/curveball/slider/changeup/cutter
LHP Leandro Carrillo, 29, Dragones de La Cartaya, fastball/changeup/curveball/screwball/slider

Ochenteros

RHP Jairo Velázquez, 25, Piratas de la Cartaya, fastball/changeup/forkball/slider
RHP Yandiel Cabrera, 28, Gallos de Playa Fresca, fastball/curveball/palmball/cutter

Cincuenteros

LHP Guillermo Navarro, 32, Gigantes de San Erasmo, fastball/changeup/cutter/curveball
RHP Ismael Ovejero, 24, Huracanes de Puerto Rubio, fastball/slurve/changeup/splitter

Treinteros

RHP Ramon Tenorio, 33, Dragones de La Cartaya, fastball/slider/changeup
LHP Aitor Galarza, 29, Elefantes de Empúries, fastball/curveball/changeup
RHP Adriel Barreto, 26, Estrellas del Oeste, fastball/slider/changeup
RHP Zoilo Fonseca, 31, Estrellas del Oeste, fastball/circle change/slurve (also position player)

Quinceros

RHP Rayan Diaz, 28, Elefantes de Empúries, fastball/slider
RHP Edgar Peralta, 32, Gigantes de San Erasmo, fastball/curveball
RHP German Ordoñez, 31, Huracanes de Puerto Rubio, fastball/changeup
LHP Luis Velásquez, 27, Gallos de Playa Fresca, fastball/slider

San Isidro Labrador does not have a traditional starter/bullpen division in its pitching staff. Instead, it categorizes pitchers by how many pitches they can throw effectively (100, 80, 50, 30, 15). Generally, as you descend from Cienteros to Quinceros, velocity rises, but control and types of pitches thrown falls.

The two Cienteros will start two of every five games, meaning they will appear in games 1-2 and 6-7, and then will start the first two playoff games if necessary. All other games will be pitched by a mix of other pitchers. Mix and match to your heart's content, but do not use Ochenteros or Quinceros as starters/openers.

Try to end up somewhere between 100-120 pitches unless SIL is really getting beaten up on. Examples include:

Treintero (30) + Ochentero (80)=110
Cincuentero (50) + Cincuentero + Quincero (15)=115
Cientero (100) + Quincero= 115
Treintero + Cincuentero + Quincero + Quincero= 110

Position Players (age, bat/throw, LPB team, positions in order of likelihood, hitting strengths)

Dioclecià Francino, 33, S/R, Piratas de La Cartaya, SS/2B/RF/3B/LF/CF/1B/C, speed, average, patience, power
Atanasio Barroso, 30, S/R, Dragones de La Cartaya, 2B/3B/LF/RF/CF/SS/1B/C, patience, average, speed
Máximo Cambeiro, 27, S/L, Gigantes de San Erasmo, RF/LF/CF/1B/C, power, average, patience
Luca Prats, 28, R/R, Gigantes de San Erasmo, C/1B/3B, power, patience
Zoilo Fonseca, 31, S/R, Estrellas del Oeste, SS/CF/2B/3B/RF/LF/C/1B/P (as Treintero), speed, patience, average
Andrés Cayetano, 26, S/R, Dragones de La Cartaya, LF/RF/CF/1B, power, patience, average
Zacarías Sarmiento, 28, S/R, Huracanes de Puerto Rubio, 3B/LF/RF/CF/1B/2B/SS/C, patience, power, speed
Moisés Linares, 23, S/R, Elefantes de Empúries, 3B/RF/LF/1B/2B, power
Salvador Guerrero, 31, L/R, Piratas de La Cartaya, C/1B/3B, average, patience
Jaime Alarcón, S/L, 26, Aguilas de Martemplado, CF/RF/LF/1B, speed, average
Joaquín Santangel, 27, S/R, Gallos de Playa Fresca, SS/3B/2B/CF/RF/LF/1B, speed, average, patience
Eliseo Campos, 26, L/L, Estrellas del Oeste, 1B/LF/RF, power, patience
Rigoberto Atenas, 24, R/R, Estrellas del Oeste, 1B/LF/RF/3B, power, average

Players in San Isidro Labrador prioritize versatility and as such, all can play at least two positions. If you RP first, construct a lineup using any 9 (if using DH) or 8 (if not using DH) players playing any positions.

I only ask that two of the four players who have C or 1B listed as their first position appear at those positions in every game (one C and one 1B). You will notice they are each half of a right/left platoon, so use them accordingly.

I would say try to use the players at their top 4 positions, but have fun if you really want to be wacky. The hitting strengths will give you some idea of where to place them in the lineup.

Baseball in San Isidro Labrador

Baseball is the second most popular sport in the country because it has almost hegemonic status in the coastal regions. Kids growing up on the coast, from small fishing villages to the major port, typically start out dreaming of becoming professional baseball players. Baseball was introduced to the country in the late nineteenth century by Cuban immigrants and San Isidran sailors who'd picked up the game from Cuba. It quickly displaced football in the coastal regions due to its novelty and coastal resentment of the plains communities who dominated in the football world.

San Isidro has two baseball seasons: the Liga Profesional de Beisbol de San Isidro (San Isidro Professional Baseball League, LPB) and the Liga de Beisbol Invernal de San Isidro (San Isidro Winter Baseball League). Each league features the same eight teams. The LPB is the "main" season, and takes place over a longer time period, from March to August, while the Winter League is considered more of a developmental league or a way to stay in shape, and runs from November to December. The LPB consists of 98 games, with each team playing each other 14 times (seven games at home in two series, seven games away in two series), while the Winter League consists of 42 games, with each team playing each other six times (three at home and three away).

The LPB features mostly San Isidran players, while the Winter League attracts foreigners from Rushmore in beyond. Whether it's prospects looking to further their development against wider competition, veterans looking to stay in shape, or AAAA-type players who need something to impress the big club, the Winter League plays host to them all.

The LPB features the top four teams advancing to the playoffs, with a 3-game semifinal series and a 7-game final series. The Winter League sees just the top two teams advancing to the Serie Final, which is a 5-game series played over the Christmas holiday (26-30 December).

Teams have an active roster limit of 26 players, but may employ up to 35 and swap them in and out as the season progresses. This holds true for the Winter League as well. For those players who do not make it to an LBP roster and those regions that are not on the coast, the Liga Regional (Regional League) is a semi-professional league that divides the country into four districts, with four teams in each district. The champion of each district meets in a double-elimination tournament. The teams are independent of the LPB, but they are often a source of talent for the big league clubs. Below that, there are various amateur teams organised into leagues both official and unofficial, from small towns to big cities. In the winter, the Liga Regional transforms into the Liga Juvenil de Invierno (Winter Junior League), which is for 16-23 year olds to develop their skills.

Due to baseball initially developing as an amateur sport and the San Isidrans learning it after having already learned other sports, the emphasis for position players became versatility. Players learn to play every (or almost every) position from a young age; this makes pickup games easy to have (because anyone can play anywhere) and avoids arguments (nobody gets "stuck" in right field because players know and love each position, plus the expectation is rotation). The only true "position players" in San Isidran baseball are true catchers and true first basemen (big left-handers), but other players often don the "tools of ignorance" or grab a first baseman's mitt. The quintessential San Isidran can play second base, third base, right field, or left field well, can play the tougher positions of shortstop and center field well enough to not embarrass themselves, and can play first if necessary (if they're tall enough). Therefore, the lineup changes from day to day depending on where people are playing.

The best players in the league are switch-hitters, and everyone else is fairly strictly platooned. Of thirteen position players, three are typically switch-hitters and appear in the lineup every day, while the other ten are five righties and five lefties who rotate positions and are platooned. Players who play only one defensive position, such as catchers or first basemen, are less likely to be platooned, but don't appear every day unless they're really good hitters. Managers substitute liberally in later innings depending on matchups and defensive acumen.

As far as pitching goes, it's the opposite. San Isidran pitchers are highly specialised, with different categories that describe the number of pitches they will usually throw or are capable of. This is a quirk of San Isidran Spanish and isn't really applicable to other countries, though some men are described like this for their sexual performance. The development of these categories is usually attributed to players switching around the field and multiple people having a turn pitching instead of expecting one player to pitch the whole game. As a result, the LPB uses the DH to avoid having to pinch-hit frequently for their non-traditional pitchers. It also allows them to work more players into the lineup at different positions.

Quincero: "Fifteen-er or Fifteen-man", a short reliever who comes in and throws as hard as he can. Usually features a fastball that will hit or sometimes sit triple digits and a slider in the high-80s to low-90s. Quality of slider will depend on the pitcher and control is typically poor, but the very best Quinceros are closer types with good control. Some Quinceros will have bad platoon splits, and there are many more right-handers than left-handers (a LOOGY is a foreign concept).

Treintero: "Thirty-er or Thirty-man", a reliever who will throw between 1-3 innings, depending on how the outing is going. There are two types of Treinteros, converted Quinceros and true Treinteros. Converted Quinceros have taken something off of their fastball and typically can hit 100, but live in the 95-97 range. They usually have a little better command and have a third pitch, usually a changeup. True Treinteros won't hit 100 and usually sit 94-96, but they have three pitches they can control that are at least average offerings. Treinteros are often used as "openers" in front of Ochenteros or as people to pick up a five-out save.

Cincuentero: "Fifty-er or Fifty-man", a reliever that is a hybrid between a true long reliever and a multi-inning fireman. Cincuenteros, like Treinteros, can be used in a multi-inning late-game relief situation, but can go beyond that at their best. Sometimes teams will "piggyback" two Cincuenteros together to get the game as close to the ninth as they can and finish it off with a Quincero. Cincuenteros will usually have three pitches they use a lot, and a fourth as a change of pace, while hovering around 94-95 for their fastball.

Ochentero: "Eighty-er or Eighty-man", a reliever that can throw anywhere from 4-6 innings. Ochenteros come in two flavors: long relievers who come in when the team is behind, and "bulk guys" who soak up the majority of the game sandwiched in between a Treintero and a Quincero, or some other combination. Ochenteros typically have good command of four pitches, though they are not always all quality, and throw 93-94. Sometimes Ochenteros are seen as failed Cienteros, or as people that can't succeed in high-leverage situations, but at their best, they have consistent command, mix their pitches well, and allow managers to have a bit of a breather without thinking too hard about matchups. For some reason, it hasn't occurred to managers in the LPB to just use Ochenteros as 5-inning starters.

Cientero: "Hundred-er or Hundred-man", this is as close as you get to a typical starting pitcher. They are the cream of the crop and there are usually only two to five in the entire country each generation. They will throw five pitches, usually four average to excellent offerings and one fringe-average, and can more or less put them wherever they want. They typically live between 92-94 with the fastball. They can reach back for 96 or 97 if they really need it, but the reduced velocity helps their command and their stamina. Some rack up a lot of "ponches", while others pitch to contact, but the key qualities of a Cientero are command, stamina, and good off-speed stuff.

As you move from Quincero to Cientero, you go up the spectrum of control/command and number/quality of off-speed pitches, but you go down the spectrum of velocity.

The Case for each type of pitcher as the "best" or "worst"

Quincero - they are power arms with incredible stuff who make any at-bat a terror for opposing hitters, but they are simplistic, usually have weaker control, and their extreme effort means if they get into trouble, they often don't have the stamina to work out of it.

Treintero - they are the fireman archetype, commanding different pitches and using their great stuff to pitch out of sticky situations. But not every Treintero is a fireman. Some are just guys that can fill two innings with an unspectacular three-pitch mix. They aren't the one-inning shutdown guy and you'll need three to four of them to get through the whole game.

Cincuentero - the best argument for this class is the fireman-plus; that they have the stuff to come in and get outs in high-leverage situations and can still give you a couple of innings beyond that. But being stuck in the middle means they don't have the true variety that is the strength of pitchers above them nor the ability to focus in on two pitches and just unleash them for short periods, like Quinceros or some Treinteros.

Ochentero - You don't get to be an Ochentero without being able to fool batters multiple times, and they have a greater variety of pitches while still being able to let loose in terms of velocity on occasion. But on the other hand, they aren't good enough to be Cienteros, nor do they have the true raw stuff of pitchers below them.

Cientero - they have the best command, the best stamina, the most variety of off-speed stuff, and they get trusted to go deep into games and face hitters several times. At the same time, teams do fine without them, their velocity is typically not elite, and commanding five pitches doesn't necessarily mean they have five elite offerings.

Bohr Suffers First Loss From First-Frame Failure

The Bohr College Gold-Stars have suffered their first loss of the IBS, to co-host nation Super-Llamaland, and it was not exactly pretty as far as losses go. Robertson second-year Johnathan Kingston, in what was likely the biggest start of his baseball career, never got it going; after striking out Halvörsson, he proceeded to go *deep breath* walk-walk-double-single-walk-flyout-homer, before finally getting the last out to end a nightmare first half-inning. Robbie Grace did an admirable job in a long relief role, but the game was out of reach for a decent, but not overwhelming, Bohr offensive performance. Coach Herm Ingram, in post-game interviews, said that the game was "a great learning experience for the kids, despite the loss" and gave Kingston his full support in future International Baseball Slam games: "Of course I'm going to continue to start him. Every pitcher in the multiverse has had a start like this before. There are certainly things to work on, but it would be wrong to rea take him out of the rotation, as good as our bullpen arms are. Kingston could not be reached for comment.

Cherry smashed her fist on the table.
“Ok, we underestimated the last ones, they got us really good and our ship is sinking, but we can still make it. The next battle is ours and our ride back!”, she said to the crew around her. “We just have to overcome this youngsters, take over their place and we can go on.”
“Remember everyone, no mercy, no prisoners. We takes everything and then goes on”, remembered Macy everyone.
“Slaughtarr who tries to fight.”
“Bob, Pops, Grin and Smutje, you take all the equipment you can carry and come behind, the rest takes the charge with me. We have to win this. Huha!”, shouted Cherry.
“HUHA!”, they all yelled together.

“An' then we 'ave to beat this younglings from the Bohr College”, said Sally.
“What?”, Cherry was confused.
“The Baseballmatch. In the IBS.”
“Sure. That is a goal for later. But first we have to capture this school ship in front of us before we sink. Then we can maybe think of Baseball”, Cherry shook her head and drew her sword.
“One at a time.”
“I told ye we shouldn’t make a raid on sea in between while playin' in this here tournament.”
“Shut up.”

Batter Up!: This Group Is Wack AF

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Jul 15, 2022 8:29 am

After two good wins that showed our love for the number 6, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were now 3-1 and certainly in a better position overall than they were before. That's certainly a positive Vojtěch Heyrovský could take from this start to this IBS but with the halfway point on the horizon, the focus was still on trying to win as much as this young team can no matter what. IBS is not the WBC but even still, chaos can still infiltrate the baseball diamond and we all had to be diligent.

The final game of the first half, at Seaside Park against Die Göttlichen Schlagers from The Divine Sonne, would perfectly show the chaos that this sport can produce on a day-to-day basis. Yolande Sirapui was starting this contest and from here, nothing went to plan at all. They took an early lead, which we responded to with a 2-run bomb from Palila Kalawai’a, but then they found 3 more runs in the 5th to make it 4-2. Luke Jaxon didn't like that and mand it 4-3 by himself and then it was just back-and-forth baseball. They made it 5-3, Seo Ji-kyo managed a 2-run RBI double to tie the game before the Schlagers found two more runs, we couldn't counter that and Die Göttlichen got their first-ever win in spectacular fashion. That was certainly a tough one to take but due to other chaos in this group, we remained in 2nd.

The 2nd game would be our rematch with the Nova Anglicana Lions, this time "on the road" at Los-Juantos City Stadium. We beat these Lions 6-2 on opening day but now, Terence Massey would have a go against our rookie Joseph "JoJo" McAlbo. This would be a big test for JoJo against a very strong baseball nation and a pitcher a decade older than him...but McAlbo would hold his own in a very impactful performance for someone so young, holding a shutout until the 3rd when Sebastien Poirier finally broke through via an RBI double from Willie Keenan. Other than that, it was JoJo's day and our 4 runs would ensure that it would also be a win - a 2-run bomb from Kalawai'a, Luke Jaxon's RBI via Martina Andrade de Souza and a solo HR from Fernando Rodrigo Viera. The 4-1 would be celebrated after the final out, with everyone rushing to celebrate with the 15-year-old pitcher. JoJo took us to 4-2 and now, a star was certainly born.

Four more games to go and this one is going to go down to the wire. We will host Quebec and Shingoryeo's U22 looking for revenge before what could be a very important showdown with the Victoriana Falcons of Delaclava. This one may get tight folks, so I suggest you all buckle up. GO CUBS GO!

The Gaegyeong Gazette

Baek Nam-Soo returns home to sign with Levis Wyverns on the record-breaking Q£44 million contract

Kirk Yoon

LEVIS - Baek 'The Taewha Era's Ace' (태화의 에이스, Tae-wha-eh eh-i-tse) has kicked off this free agency period, widely marked as the most interesting one in ten years for the Quebecois Baseball Organisation - by setting a record-breaking contract on professional baseball history.

While official statements are yet to be released, with each and every free agency contract signed over the weekend not being confirmed by the QBO Office in Joongyeong, Capitale-Nationale, until the very next Monday, reports suggest that the two-year contract with Levis Wyverns is expected to be approximately around Q£44 million ($88 million NSD). The contract, while not record-breaking by amount of money, has the highest average salary out of all contracts signed by the QBO league.

Known as one of the Grim Reapers' two aces alongside Elephant Valley Homers' Kevin Buchanan, Baek Nam-Soo was considered to be the most coveted free agency option in the QBO for a decade. Levis native whose high school heroics were remembered for the three national titles won at Lycee-de-Levis, he had spent past six years in Cassadaigua, where the southpaw fireballer starred for the New Lakeland Tycoons.

Wyverns' President of Baseball Operations Kim Yoon-Seong said Levis was quick to reach out to Baek, who had received a Tommy John surgery two and a half seasons ago, and asked him if he would seriously consider an offer made by the Wyverns, whose last Quebec Series title came three years ago.

Baek, who is represented by superagent Pierre McCarthy, were positive about any offer made by the Wyverns, who were one of last three teams he had considered at the time.

'It's an honour, that's all,' Baek answered on an interview with The Gaegyeong Gazette, released earlier today. The interview, featuring Baek in a Wyverns' uniform, had addressed the 26-year old in a very positive light. 'I do know that it hasn't been the easiest getting back to where I had originally started, especially after past two years of injuries, but my own performance at the national team and the WBC would suggest that I am ready to have a roll at it again - and where else can I do that than with Wyverns?'

Baek said McCarthy, who also represents the other two of the trio of gigantic free agents available this offseason, was focused on getting a possible deal out of the situation in the weeks leading up to the Day One of free agency.

'Do I think that he's done a good job with it? Absolutely,' Baek said. 'I've been Pierre's client for my entire time as a professional and I know that he doesn't bullshit out of all this. Contracts and trades aren't signed in a matter of split seconds - they take weeks to materialise so that you could sign them on the first day, and I'm glad for it.'

Baek's contract, while best known for how much money is put on the table, is lot more complicated and extravagant than what you would expect for it. According to the baseball financial website 'CapNerd', the contract is expected to include 6 different bonuses and optional clauses - including one each for breaking 200 strikeouts, 20 wins, and not to mention winning the Quebec Series.

If he maximum amount of salary is met, Baek can collect around Q£60 million ($120 million NSD). Not the optimal, but appropriate for a pitcher with just over 100 wins and 1,025 strikeouts to his CBL record.

'Now that the Day one is over, it's time for me to focus on what is my next goal,' Baek answered, before finishing his interview. 'And that is to win a Quebec Series.'

Batter Up!: Another Interesting Split

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Jul 17, 2022 8:28 am

After a wacky split somehow kept us in 2nd in a group filled with chaos, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were 4-2 and somehow still in 2nd place. I know I already said that, but it bears repeating. This group is just filled with chaos and drama and no matter whether we are "at home" or "on the road", every single game in this IBS tells its own tale. And that is certainly interesting for Vojtěch Heyrovský and his squad to try and manage across the remaining 4 games. Anything and everything can happen in an IBS as chaotic as this one and every game would have to be taken very seriously no matter what.

Up first was the rematch with the U22 Grim Reapers from Quebec and Shingoryeo at Seaside Park. They smashed us 6-2 in the 2nd game of this IBS and many were expecting some sort of a fight back as Nahuel Fornacieri and Maddison "Missy" Jembembe looked to face off in what many hoped to be a bit of a classic...but instead, it just wasn't close at all. When your opponents score 6 runs in one innings and 4 in another, you could safely say that it was not our day at all. We did score some runs, don't get us wrong...Palila Kalawai’a did the usual in the 5th and Julian Mertz added a 3rd, but losing 10-3 isn't cool no matter how you style it.

Then came the Victoriana Falcons of Delaclava on the road and this performance was undoubtedly a great way to bounce back, no matter how you style it. How do you bounce back? How does a Grand Slam from Khin Marlar Tun sound? Victoriana would get one back in this Yolande Sirapui vs Alistair Gray contest but they would only get 2 runs all day in the win we certainly needed. Palila Kalawai’a added another, Sirapui managed a Gand Slam of her own, 9-2, great win and STILL we lie in 2nd.

Only two games to go, two games to defend our 2nd spot in this group. We "host" Los Jornaleros of San Isidro Labrador before our last stand against Die Göttlichen Schlagers of The Divine Sonne. We still have threats behind us but as long as we keep winning, they cannot take this from us. GO CUBS GO!

Batter Up!: We Make It In!

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Jul 18, 2022 4:29 pm

After experiencing both a blowout and being blown out, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s entered the final double-header at 5-3 - which was OK, but there was still a chance that this squad could end up eliminated if they didn't win both of the upcoming contests. That is a risk that Vojtěch Heyrovský didn't want to be amplified at all and thus, the aim was simple: win. Simple as that. There are hungry lions behind us, we must hold them off.

Up first was the final game at Seaside Park against Los Jornaleros from San Isidro Labrador, who finally provided us with a teamsheet so that we knew who we were truly facing. Guillermo Navarro was chosen to face off against Joseph "JoJo" McAlbo in a true contest between youth and experience. All you need to know is that 2 people all combined forces to get the job done and it all made things a bit special. Holly Davids was the first thanks to her solo homer in the 4th and the 2nd was McAlbo himself, who is quickly turning into a rising star in a team filled with them. Not only did he manage a 2-run bomb in the 5th, but he also recorded a shut-out that was certainly celebrated by all. 3-0 the final, one more to go.

With other results going our way, we knew that we would advance to the knockouts before we played our final game at Los-Juantos City Stadium...meaning the Cubs could simply relax for the first time in a long while. The final opponents of this group stage were the team that surprised us on MD5 - Die Göttlichen Schlagers of The Divine Sonne. This game would be all about revenge above anything else and we got off to the best of starts thanks to Palila Kalawai’a and a 2-run bomb. It seems like a tradition at this point but one they certainly love to continue. The game would be tied in the 8th inning, but a 9th inning RBI from Maddison "Missy" Jembembe via Holly Davids would win this ball game 3-2. We end the group at 7-3 and a strong 2nd place.

How will we do in the knockout rounds? Who knows? But what we do know is that no matter what, our Cubs will fight for their right to carry on. We head next to the Ratzupalfu Dome in order to take on the co-hosts of this competition - the All-Rookie Elephants from South Newlandia. They have only lost once thus far this IBS, so this will be a very tough test...but like the Jaguars they will become, these Cubs won't give up from a fight at all. GO CUBS GO!

CAB Hoping IBS Success is a Good Omen,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The young Fillies have been playing well in the 17th International Baseball Slam, going 8-2 in the group stage, then pulling out a 5-3 win over Kavanis in the quarterfinals, sparked by a three run homer by Krystal Barclay in the bottom of the fifth. The team has consistently got good pitching, and know that they will have, at minimum, a top four finish in a tournament that they have not always done well in. The next opposition is the Quebec and Shingoryeo U22s, a group that went 10-0 during the group stage, and comfortably won their quarterfinal match (well, comfortable until the ninth inning).

What does all this mean?
Obviously the task at hand is to see if the young Fillies can pull out two more wins, but the big picture is much different: is it a good sign that Cassadagan baseball, in general, is getting back on track? The nation has absolutely plummeted in the rankings over the last few Classics, and are no longer the type of team that is considered to be an elite program. Opponents will always be on guard against us, because they know of our resume, but it’s been a while since the team has had sustained success and we can get into the reasons for that when the World Baseball Classic starts. For now, players like Krystal Barclay, the projected #1 overall pick in the upcoming draft who certainly helped her cause with the homer against Kavanis, isn’t worried about the senior squad. “We’re not the ones who are going to be out there in the World Baseball Classic, this is our tournament. That said, I think this is something that can energize our baseball program going forward. Maybe it can be a resurgent Classic for us. But right now, we’re focused on Quebec. As you can see, they’re pretty damn good!”

Batter Up!: Into The Final 4 These Cubs Go

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Jul 20, 2022 3:17 pm

After a 7-3 group stage saw them progress into the knockout rounds, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were happy to be in the Final 8 after the wacky nature of their group. Surviving the madness certainly felt like a confidence booster to many within this squad and Vojtěch Heyrovský knew that he would be happy no matter what. The main aim is always to advance from the group and thus, anything more than that is just cherries on top of the cake...but obviously, everyone was going to gun for going as far as possible...but where would our limit be?

The Ratzupalfu Dome hosted this road game in all but name as we took on the All-Rookie Elephants of co-hosts South Newlandia, a squad managed by Sarang Oli filled entirely by local players from the most-recent LPB Draft. This one would see Yolande Sirapui start against Lio Güntherand with umpires from Drawkland in place, this one was always going to be interesting. Initially, in this game with the DH, the Elephants took a 2-run lead thanks to Sofia Löfgren before both Holly Davids and Andrea Pellegrino added to the score to make it 3-1 SNL. And then came the Top of the 5th, where back-to-back homers from DH Zingisa Mtyanda and Julian Mertz blew things wide open with a 5-run inning. The 7th would add two more thanks to Martina Andrade de Souza and that would certainly be the end of that. The All-Rookie Elephants certainly fought well, but our U21s went out there and delivered the deeds in an 8-5 win.

Into the Final 4, we now go and we face another interesting side at The Ultra-Dome in Emerald Springs, Super-Llamaland. They are the Gold Stars of Bohr College, a collegiate side who finished 2nd in their group but managed to beat the Super-Llamaland U21s in the Quarters. This side is certainly one not to underestimate then and that should certainly be interesting considering who is supposed to start this one...Joseph "JoJo" McAlbo. The 15-year-old will have to play the biggest game of his life thus far. GO CUBS GO!

Batter Up!: Soon, We Glide To Our Final Destination

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Jul 22, 2022 3:20 pm

After an 8-5 thriller saw us through to the final 4, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia U21s were now further into an IBS than they have ever been before...and that fact was certainly an important one. Making it into the Final 4 is certainly a sign that TJUN-ian Baseball is certainly continuing its development towards an eventual baseball title, but that doesn't mean we could simply accept that. Everyone knew that we had an opportunity to reach our first ever IBS Championship Game and Vojtěch Heyrovský did not want that opportunity to be passed up at all.

The Ultra-Dome in Emerald Springs, Super-Llamaland would host our Final 4 duel with the Bohr College Gold Stars, coached by Herm Ingram and containing the best the domestic CGSL had to offer. This team were relative unknowns, but knocking off the Super-Llamaland U21s certainly isn't something to simply scoff at. Both 15-year-old Joseph "JoJo" McAlbo and 22-year-old James Ko would be sent out to the mound to try and make the final game for their side and all the action would start very quickly indeed. Both Holly Davids and Andrew Singer would get their sides on the board before more was added in the 3rd, via a 2-run bomb from JoJo McAlbo was responded to by Ko to make this a 3-2 ball game. Khin Marlar Tun would add a 4th run but after that came an eerie game where chances would be stopped by both pitchers with an incredible efficiency both could be proud of. Both boys on the mound certainly did their job out there but in the end, our 4-2 lead would hold on right to the end. The Battin' Cubs were going to the Championship Game...somehow, someway.

In the end, we head out to Tyler Rocke Memorial Stadium in New Llama City for one final duel with those damn U22 Grim Reapers of Quebec and Shingoryeo. They have beaten us convincingly twice this IBS, 6-2 and 10-3, but this one is for all the gold and you'd better believe we aren't just gonna hand the crown to Levinson Webster no matter what. Maddison "Missy" Jembembe's final start as a U21 will be up against Nahuel Fornacieri for all the glory...with both Holly Davids and Martina Andrade de Souza looking to bow out in style. Will it be 3rd time's the charm? Or will the Reapers kick us to the curb one final time?

No matter what happens, we both deserve this shot...but only one youth side can reign above us all.

GO CUBS GO!

Heo Myeong-Shin returns to Quebec, signs with hometown Tigers on the most expected deal of the offseason

Kirk Yoon

KINGSTON - Heo 'The King' Myeong-Shin is returning to the hot corner for his hometown team in Quebec & Shingoryeo, after eight years with the Concord Heights Royals of Cassadaigua.

The Kingston Tigers, who play on the Royal League of the Quebecois Baseball Organisation (QBO), announced that the 34-year old third baseman had signed a 4 year contract. It is reported that the deal, which brings him back under the returning half of the Posting System used interchangeably between the QBO and the foreign leagues, most notably the LPB and the CBL, is expected to worth Q£5 million (NSD $10 million) annually.

'Champion in all walks off life began in Cornwall. He went onto become a Tiger, and a Royal. And at last, he will be returning home.' the Kingston Tigers posted this on Twit.tur, which was accompanied by a 5-minute long video briefing his club and national team career so far.

The Kingston Tigers, whose historical fortunes have swung from the poverty between 1970s and 1990s, to that of relative financial stability and massive spending in past sixty years, have not been shy with investments this offseason. Through free agency they have also added Kelsey Altherr, formerly-franchise catcher from Oakwood Dinos, and Eric Neeson-Gallagher, a stable number-two on the starting rotation, from California City Dodgers. Heo's addition, while expected, vie for postseason contention for the second-winningest club in the QBO.

'Thank you to the city of Concord Heights and the nation of Cassadaigua for making the improbable probable, and it has been an absolute pleasure being part of this team and to win the Dagan Series during my time here,' an excerpt from his l'Instagramme post said. 'It has been 8 unbelievable years with you guys.

'While I have decided to return home, to play for the final stretch of my career with my hometown team, the Kingston Tigers, you know that I cherish every bit of love and support I have received from you guys while in Concord Heights. Thank you for this privilege - you guys know that I am a Royal, and remain Concord Heights. Thank you.'

Even at his relative age Heo has performed well, hitting 31 home runs with a .313 batting average and 91 RBIs in his final season with Concord Heights.

The right-handed batter hit for the Tigers from 2043 to 2047, hitting 185 home runs, 865 hits and a .331 batting average in his five seasons. When heading to the Concord Heights Royals with Theo-Alexandre Pinson, the other half of the HP duo that have highlighted the Quebecois reputation for power hitters, he was reported signed for $40 million NSD (Q£20 million), a figure likely never to be repeated or even neared in future time. Heo then signed a 4 year, $80 million (Q£40 million) contract with the Royals, before the contract was renewed by the player for another four year period.

During his time with the Royals, he was remembered for being the third hitter - third on batting lineup, and as a third baseman - and provided a stable, defensive presence to add to his balanced reputation, an excellent complement to Pinson, a natural home run hitter, and played a veteran presence to the star-studded roster.

He, however, was best remembered for his postseason, and his respective performances in all three stages of baseball, where he has so far won two Quebec Series and a Dagan Series title while winning Series MVP on both countries, would be no less than what would be called 'clutch' at this point in his career.

His loyalty to his teams, at the same time, has stayed unwavered as well. Heo, who was born and lived first twelve years of his life in Cornwall, Mahan, where the Tigers' minor league team plays, grew up cheering for the Kingston Tigers. Recent remarks, where he rumoured to have said that 'Tigers and Royals will be the only teams he will ever play for again', seemed to have rang truer than ever in light of those.

His personal circumstances, where his wife Naomi's a professional volleyball coach, may have made it, a father of three, all too expected. Heo always had a bit of that in him, and perhaps there's a shade of reflection upon the senior year saga, where he picked the Tigers over Jolbonopolis Raiders of the QFL. He's a professional after all.

But this return is also one that goes back to his virtues and values as a player. A a hitter whose intangibles and timing will make him remembered well into the future time. Slightly bit boring, but a statesman of the game in this day and age where we need said virtues even more so, especially as Theo-Alexandre Pinson saga continues on.

Batter Up!: We End With So Much Pride

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Jul 24, 2022 1:49 pm

F: TJUN-ia U21 Battin' Cubs 3-6 Quebec and Shingoryeo U22s

We came looking to prove that TJUN-ian Baseball can reload the holes left by the greats of the past...and these kids have certainly proved our future is in great hands.

Sure, the Grim Reapers went 3-0 over us to claim that IBS title...but they were undefeated throughout this tournament and certainly deserve that crown.

We will happily take silver...that fact cannot be understated and this silver will certainly be celebrated back home.

Maddison "Missy" Jembembe, Holly Davids and Martina Andrade de Souza all graduate with a silver medal around their necks...and the Jaguars will certainly welcome them with open arms.

TJUN-ian Baseball has a future...soon, we will see how it develops.
