Ty Oliver could still hear the boos in his head. They had resounded throughout Archbishop Stadium, cascaded down on him and his players alike. They'd started in the seventh, when Jean-Michel Lefebvre had walked back-to-back batters, continued when Barrett Satterfield had mishandled a sure double-play ball, then airmailed it into the seats trying to get the back runner, and finally Lefebvre had allowed a two-run single. That made it 7-5 to the visitors, some nobody nation called Second Peenadian that hadn't released the names of any of the players nor had they ever competed in a World Baseball Classic before. They'd blown the lead they had worked so hard to build after a similar series of miscues, walks, bloops, errors, and even a hit by pitch had pushed four runs across in the second against Christian Hammond, supposedly the ace of the Lions' staff. Hammond was tough; he'd bounced back to pitch six solid innings and key hits by Gary McKinney, Daniel Conner, and Satterfield had given them a 5-4 lead. Then the fatal seventh.

The boos had created such a wall of sound that he'd found it incredibly difficult to concentrate the rest of the inning. Thank God Roger Bizet hadn't faltered and had been able to get the outs they needed to get them out of the inning. They had continued as the Lions had gone down quietly, more or less, managing just three baserunners across the final three innings. It had been a terrible locker room after that game. There wasn't anything he could think to say. It wasn't a chew-his-team out kind of a game, but it wasn't a sympathise-with-your-players kind of a game either. It was a stare-blankly-at-the-wall-as-you-reflect-on-your-shortcomings kind of a game.

The thing was, by the next home game, it didn't seem like the fans had watched or that his players even remembered their 4-0 defeat of Gortolekua. Rocky Gantt had pitched a crisp eight and a third shutout innings before running into a little trouble, but it wasn't anything Ricky Hart couldn't handle. The offense was a little weak until Vincent Saint-Denis crushed a three-run homer in the eighth, but it was enough. But by the time they came back to Archbishop, the boos had returned and the Lions' competency had gone away. It didn't matter that Milchama was basically the opposite of Second Peenadian: high-ranked, older than dirt, well-known players. As soon as the Warriors went up 2-0, the boos had returned. It couldn't have just been in his head. There were too many of them for that. Jonathan Drake had only gotten through five and a third before being knocked out of the box, and Simon Steele couldn't staunch the bleeding until six runs were on the scoreboard for the Warriors, five more than the Lions. The next twelve outs for the Lions yielded three baserunners in an utterly dismal offensive performance. And the boos continued like rain, like the fog that sometimes blanketed Londinium.

It was utterly uncharacteristic of Nova Anglicans to boo so consistently, but Oliver couldn't blame them. They'd turned in two stinkers at home, and without the chance to rectify things that a series format provided, they were in deep shit at 1-2. No wonder people were booing them. No real deep runs since the championship series loss to Cassadaigua in WBC 50 and now this. Facing off against Bardney in a weird stadium, a weird nation, and all sorts of groundskeeping gamesmanship could have been a real killer. And they fell behind 3-0. But Hank Oliver, Sam Erickson, and finally Nolan Dunning had touched up the "Dartford Flash" to give the Lions the 4-3 lead and Hart had nailed down the save.

The first pitch of the first inning of the game against United Adaikes, a 95 MPH fastball right down the pipe, had been taken right out of the park, 404 feet to straightaway center and the boos had rolled in. Almost like the whole stadium was waiting for things to go wrong. They were still selling out WBC games, but 35,000 fans isn't any friendlier than 15,000 when they're all booing at once. Ty had taken the unprecedented step of going out himself, after one pitch, not to remove his pitcher, but just to make sure Caleb Sherman was okay. Or maybe it was to make sure he was okay; he hadn't really ever struggled in his playing career or really in his coaching career quite like this. To be behind the eight-ball and on the receiving end of wave after wave of boos after one pitch, he might well have cracked had it been him on the mound. To be honest, he wasn't sure he wasn't cracking in the dugout up to that point. Everything was blurring together and being drowned in the roar of sound. And then Sherman had said the magic words, "I got this, coach." And he did have it. Over the next eight innings, he proceeded to use every one of his four pitches to baffle the United Adaikes hitters. 12-6 curves that batters swung over, changeups that had hitters way out in front, sliders biting at back feet and outside corners, and a fastball to blow people away when needed. Twenty-five batters, twenty-four outs, ten strikeouts, zero walks. And the boos had subsided. They'd even turned to cheers as Sherman put on a master class of pitching, as Conner, Davis Shipley, Satterfield, and McKinney had knocked in runs. The boos in Ty's head had receded as well. Everything was quiet for once. Sure, Hart had gotten into a little trouble in the ninth and given up a run, but he got out of it and the Lions had a winning record for the first half.

But the boos could come back at any time. Ty tensed up just thinking about it. So he'd made the choice to not let the other teams get too familiar with the Lions' starters. He'd let Tommy Logan, the starter turned fireman, handle Second Peenadian on the road, and bump Jonathan Drake to the bullpen for a bit. Everyone else would continue in their same rotation after Logan. Maybe that would shut off the spigot of noise. Maybe.

OOC Note: Second-half rotation will be Logan/Hammond/Gantt/Rouillard/Sherman.

Today's Dreams, Tomorrow's Memories
Part IV: Always Repeating Yet Never the Same
Part I | Part II | Part III

One week later...

The day had finally arrived. After a few days of getting set up in a small apartment with an old family friend, it was time for Lucas to go to his first day of work at his new job... or rather, his old job, just in a new country.

Could you say he was nervous about the new old position? Well... not really, but there was a different sort of feeling. What was it though... he couldn't quite put his finger on it. This place and its culture seemed so familiar, but yet, there was so much he never knew. There were restaurants with food from cultures that didn't seem to come from this world, languages spoken in the streets that he had never heard before... what was this? What was going on? What happened to the place that he knew, the city that he had visited multiple times as a child... no, that city was Toronto. This city, Eshialand City, was clearly something else. The streets had the same names, the same sights could be seen, but too much was different. This was a different--

"AAAAA!!!"

Lucas instantly felt a burning feeling on his chest as he bumped into a young woman on the street and her coffee got all over the two of them. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I just got distr--"

Lucas paused as he looked up to see this woman's face. A face he hadn't seen in so many years, but yet one he knew so well. "Bianca???" he asked in sheer disbelief.

"Oh my... Lucas?? Is-- is that you???? I haven't seen you since the revolution... I thought you might've been killed!!!"
"I wasn't killed, of course I wasn't... my mom was always too protective to let that happen, and you should know that!"

The two share a chuckle as if they had never been apart in the first place, still just as in sync as they were in 2017.

"Heh heh, I'm sure you're wondering how much has changed about the country since you left... wanna catch up? I could get us each a coffee that you hopefully won't spill--"
"Well, I actually have to get to work, it's kinda my first day at the new job."
"And you're wearing that?? There's coffee all over you, you can't just look like that on your first day!"
"Oh shit, you're right... dammit Lucas, why do you have to screw everything up..." he mutters under his breath.
"Could you call your new boss and say you'll be an hour late while you put something else on?"
"I mean, I suppose so... hopefully I don't get fired before I even start..."
"Anyway, uh... here's my number... just call me when you're on your lunch break I guess, if you aren't fired, that is!" Bianca says as she scribbles her number down on a post-it note and sticks it on his forehead.

"Did you really have to stick it to my forehead?" Lucas asks.
"Just be thankful I didn't write 'Stupid'."
"Hahaha... you know you really didn't have to do that back in school."
"I was being playful!"
"It was junior prom night!!"
"But it was funny, wasn't it?"

As Bianca walks away, Lucas picks up the phone to tell his boss about his delay. As the phone rings, he thinks about what the minuscule odds of, out of all the people in the world... or perhaps worlds, given what he'd seen and heard... that he'd run into Bianca. It's just enough to make a man wonder whether fate and soulmates are real concepts.
Anything I say is IC unless proven otherwise by a court of law.

Constance Airlines Field Ready To Host Biggest Game Of Krauts' WBC 54 Group Stage

Image
Ranoria has gotten off to a hot start in WBC 54, but a big loss against Zwangzug in their sixth match could make it all for naught

Ranoria has easily had their best start ever to a Classic, with five straight wins to open things up. Only South Newlandia and Super-Llamaland can boast those marks, and those are two of the heaviest hitters in international baseball. On our end, the best start the Krauts ever managed was winning their first two games - so this is an unprecedented level of success this early.

Despite only posting one winning record in the past three cycles (pain), Ranoria entered the competition as a Pot 2, and assigned to Group 8. Our leadoff hitter was none other than Zwangzug, the Pot 1 team of the group, making Group 8's opening day one of the more exciting matchups in the tournament. And, incredibly, the 3rd ranked Zebras never held the lead against our Krauts in a 6-3 thriller for any Ranorian fans.

That momentum kicked off this five game winning streak, and makes those Zebras the only team within a game of the Krauts for the group lead. While it would be a tall order for them to win by more than three to secure the head-to-head runs tiebreaker, a loss would still put our position within striking distance of teams like the 3-2 Krytenia. Early on it seemed that Brookstation would be our primary competition as they started 2-0, but after the Krauts blasted their squad 4-0 they've been on a three game skid.

Group 8 Standings Pld W L RF RA RD Pts
1 Ranoria 5 5 0 27 8 +19 5
2 Zwangzug 5 4 1 26 9 +17 4
3 Krytenia 5 3 2 12 12 0 3
4 Brookstation 5 2 3 8 18 −10 2
5 Camcity 5 1 4 13 25 −12 1
6 HUElavia 5 0 5 11 25 −14 0

And those at home should make no mistake - Ranoria has at this point virtually clinched a berth in the postseason barring some Franklin Bell-esque collapse. (infamous Drawkian closer, for those of you not aware) We're going to get past the group stage for this first time since WBC 50. But a win here over Zwangzug would be instrumental in our chances at both favorable seeding and establishing ourselves once again as a team with potential to be among the elite in the near future.

With all that in mind, one could argue this is the biggest game since our first round series squaring off against the Sherpa Empire in the aforementioned 50th Classic. It'll be in Ranoria's largest baseball stadium, and we're hoping to see Constance Airlines Field filled to the brim with our (occasionally) adoring and loyal fans.

Banijan Pitching the name of the game as the team roars off to a 4-1 start

Image
A Banijan pitcher throws a pitch in Banija's road win on Matchday 5

BUSUKUMA, NAITONAL CAPTIOL REGION- At this point in time, there is just one blip against Banija's record so far in the World Baseball Classic- a Matchday 2 loss to The 189. Ever since then, however, the Banijan pitching staff, both the starters and the bullpen, have absolutely been mowing down the bats from Banija's opponents in this group, giving them one of the best runs allowed records in the whole tournament so far. And those excellent pitching performances are translating into wins. At 4-1, we sit in sole possesion of first place in our group, and it would be a stunner, at this point in time, if we couldn't finish top 3 out of 6 in this group, after starting the competition 4-1.

We left off after Game 3, didn't we? Let's start off with Game 4, when Banija hosted Huron League at the Capitol Proving Grounds, in Busukuma. Our third home game in four to start, a scheduling quirk that we absolutely had to take advantage of, even in this short group stage. That would mean Foster Samuels pitching against Ava Odoyo. And during the beginning of the day, many thought it would be a pitcher's duel. Yet, slowly, but surely, the Banijan hitters were able to be patient, not chase the game, and then really get after Foster Samuels. No big innings, the Banijans didn't go yard, and in fact, we only had one extra base hit all day- a RBI double in the sixth inning. But we were opportonous. In the 3rd inning, after getting on base to leadoff the inning, Joanna Adoyo stole second. And then, she scored from second base, on a bang-bang play, off of a single.

The 4th inning? Saw our runscorer go from first to third on a single. The sixth inning, of course, saw Mesuli Calata score from first on a double. And then, of course, in the seventh, it was back to back walks by Foster Samuels that put our runner in scoring position. Just how to chip away at a team. And Ava Odoyo- her patience allowed her to stay dominant. It was a pressure packed moment, for sure. But the 30 year old was not cowed by the moment. After getting two outs in the top of the 7th, she allowed back-to-back doubles to allow Huron League to get a second run on the board. That's when she was taken out. But what a line. 6 and 2/3s, 7 strikeouts, 2 walks, 5 hits, 2 earned? A solid performance. And Banija's bullpen continued its surprising run of dominance, as Naiser Ibeamaka got the hold by getting a pop out to finish the seventh. But the back end was where it was at- with Oyella Lagum getting a 1-2-3 8th, and Yoro Coulibaly, our 37 year old closer, getting a 1-2-3 9th inning.

That led us to our trip to Norrhem to close out the first half. Remember, we are running a four man rotation this classic, because the shortened schedule allows for extra off days. Therefore, it would be Ramata Kabba who would take the mound, in the first of our three game road trip, where we visit all three ranked teams in our group in consecutive order- a trip to Norrhem, then a trip to Eshialand, followed by a trip to The 189. A terribly tough stretch of schedule. So what better way to start that stretch, than to throw your ace on the mound? That was the idea, and a good one it was- both starting pitchers were dealing. We almost knocked their starter out of the game early on. We scored 2 runs and loaded the bases, threatening to blow the game wide open. But it would be the catcher, Anathi Zimema, who would strike out looking to end the inning, after a brilliant breaking ball from Norrhem's starter.

Ramata Kabba allowed a leadoff double at the bottom of the first, and then stranded the runner. There was no more offense for either side for a while, as both pitchers gave baseball fans in these countries an absolute clinic of how to move through a lineup. But in the 7th inning, she started to face trouble. It all started by allowing a leadoff double. And then- two walks. Her control was going everywhere. The game was only 2-0, and the bases were loaded with nobody out. So how does she get out of this? She doesn't. A line drive one hopper to right field scores the run, but a strong jump on the ball from Ugonna Akachi holds all the runners. The game is 2-1. Ramata Kabba is pulled, and Oladipo knows that this is an extremely high leverage moment. So who does he go to? None other than the second oldest vet in the pen, the 33 year old, Lwazi Fassie.

The lefty gets the first batter to strikeout. The next batter, with the infield in, grounds to Cedron Aloo at second base- who throws home for the force. And then, with a righty coming up, Fassie was pulled for Ismaela Ndour. And Ndour got the final out, when Norrhem's hitter hit a lazy fly out to center field, that Joanna Adoyo was able to easily run underneath. Three outs, and the threat over. Oyella Lagum had a shaky 8th inning, but he ultimately got out of the inning with a gold glove level play at the hot corner by Moses Oneko, to get Banija to the 9th, still up 1. WIth the bullpen wavering, it was Banija's bats that would come to life. Highlighted by a 2 out, 2 run double from the superstar, Malik Solely, Banija put up four runs in the top of the 9th, to turn a 2-1 nailbiter into a 6-1 doozer. Duka Kondana would be the man who would come into the game and pitch the 9th.

After that game, Manager Isaac Oladipo told reporters that he was happy with how the team was playing. "This team is in a tough group, and we are taking the challenges in stride." He told reporters. "We have just played the first game in what is going to certainly be an unenviable stretch of away games, where we have to continuously travel to the ballparks of the best teams in this group. But if we want to be the best, aka finish the top of the table, then we have to beat the best. So we fear nothing and regret less. Our next trip is out to Eshialand. Faraba Conateh tells me his arm is more than ready, and although our series in Eshialand was not great last classic, we will still go to the country competing with everything we have to get win #5 of this Classic."

The pitching matchup will be Faraba Conateh against Grant Porter, both right-handed males.

So, What Kind Of Day Has It Been?
Posted by sox2BU2

The Things have reached the halfway mark of WBC qualifying. The return to a single game format is a welcome move for those few Quodites able to remember the “glory days”, but it has to be said the Things have won a hell-doesn’t-exist of a lot more glory in the new era, so everyone’s been a bit nervous about possible bumps on the way to qualifying. A 4–1 record has thus calmed some nerves.

1. Perhaps it’s a good job Jay Stevens brought his bat

The snarky first draft of this article began:

Jay Stevens has gone 0–4 in his pinch-hit appearances. He has struck out three times and hit a weak grounder. Given his O-Swing% is actually higher than his Z-Swing% right now, why did he even bother to bring his bat? He would literally be more likely to get on base if he just stood there and hoped the pitcher threw him four balls.

Unfortunately, Mr Stevens then hit a clutch pinch-hit double in the 9th against The Greater Nordics, setting up the walk-off run. So… sorry about that.

2. Tom Brøndum appears to be better

What an awful WBC53 for Brøndum. He was hitting so badly that his getting injured actually improved his performance, because he was generating negative WAR in the lineup. He came back, got injured again, and was out of the team for the championship series. Naturally, a lot of anticipation surrounded his return, and to date he’s put in a steady performance at the plate, still striking out often, but making it count when he does connect. Tonight he had seven bases. His fielding is also holding up in centrefield; given the poor state of the outfield with Rémy Weber and Luka Chevalier at corners, this is even more important than his hitting.

3. Rémy Weber is an enormous human being

The only thing bigger than his waistline is the fat dongers he hits off unwary pitchers. The blast he smashed tonight won’t have landed by the time this blog post goes out. He was hengelike at WBC53 and he’s now positively megalithic. Unfortunately, the team is also largely playing without a DH, and it’s debatable whether he’s even the worst fielder in the lineup, given Luka Chevalier’s noodle arm, so he’s accrruing negative defensive WAR at an alarming rate.

4. Natalí Ágústsdóttir is single handedly reviving the batgirl tradition

The Things have a tradition of having players who served as batgirls become members of the team. Some have been absolute stars, such as Emily Sanderson, Natalia Kivistö, and Sakiko Wakabayashi. In the modern era, though, it hasn’t really worked out: Isabella Gennarelli didn’t last one tournament, and Zuzana Janečková hasn’t been invited back after her poor WBC53. Technically, Ágústsdóttir debuted at the last Classic, but she began it as the batgirl so this is her first proper tournament, and she is raking. Maybe there’s something to the weird tradition!

5. Our arm barn suuuuucks

Another collapse from the arm barn (no, Hu Ja’s 33.75 ERA is not a typo), and everyone’s starting to wonder whether it was so clever to move on from Hong Liang. Quintessence of Dust’s ability to produce left-handed relief pitchers appears to have declined sharply, and given Jun Jiang’s love of split match-ups, he probably won’t stop going to Ja any time soon. If he could quickly learn to pitch, that’d be great.

A collection of memorable moments of the LPB season (in South Newlandian ballparks)

MD23: South Bryant Chariots @ Rüsselsheim Blue Sox (Bot 8th, 10-2)
Jack Theriault is now up to bat with one out and Raitis Ranta on first. Theriault, 3 for 4 on the night with three RBI, including a home run, is looking to pile on a bit to the Sox’s lead. First pitch, ball one, lets it go. The 1-0, swung on, deep drive toward left-center field, base hit, Yousuf Conway dives for it, and he can’t get it, this one will roll, Theriault is running, one run will score, and Theriault is charging for three, and he’s going to be… safe! Safe at third, a triple for Jack Theriault, and he has just hit for the cycle! This one’s a moment for history for sure, and it’s now 11-2; Theriault becomes the first player to hit for the cycle in the South Newlandian league!

MD41: Ruditown Dachshunds @ Sun City Flames (Top 9th, 0-2)
Top of the ninth here, Franklin Bell will be trying to preserve the lead for the Flames. Of course, it’s more than that; winning this game would not only be the fourth consecutive Flames win, but Bell has a chance to finish what Banijan Faraba Conateh started; the Dachshunds are hitless through nine innings tonight. After Conateh pitched seven clean innings of no-run ball with four walks and a hit-by-pitch, Grady Reuters came into a tied game, pitching a clean 1-2-3 inning, before third baseman Ava Llorente uncorked a home run to give the Flames their 2-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Bell’s in here now with a chance to earn another save; the Drawkian closer is yet to blow a save opportunity this season. With two outs here in the top of the ninth, Franklin Bell has the chance to complete the first no-hitter in the South Newlandian League this season. The last one standing is TJUN-ian international Pedro Moires, who has reached safely twice tonight. First pitch, fastball, Pedro Moires lets it go, 1-0. Second pitch, swung on, and that one’s headed to deep right field, a high fly ball, Francisco Adam is going back, at the track, at the ball, and he’s made the catch! About four feet away from the right field wall, it’s a no-hitter! The Flames no-hit the Dachshunds to take game one of the series!

MD65: Sun City Flames @ Masmow Dragons (End of game, 21-7)
[do I even need to add anything, aside from the fact that this game was, annoyingly, the 776th in my files for this season. Ah well, this is my 777th ever forumpost, that'll make up for it]

MD74: Peninsulara Kingfishers @ Ruditown Dachshunds (Bot 10th, 3-2)
With Fred Hodgson on third base and just one out, excitement couldn’t be higher here in Dachshund Stadium. The Kingfishers, having just taken the lead in the top of this inning, are looking to prevent Hodgson from being the tying run after he was already able to advance 90 feet on a wild pitch. Newmanistanian Hannah Mitchell is at the plate, she’ll try to get the Bollonischian home here. The Kingfishers are playing a five man infield setup to prevent just that. Here’s the 1-1 pitch, and that’s a deep drive into deep left field, that will score the run easily, Mitchell might have a chance for three here, she’s rounding second, the ball is now being scooped up; they’re gonna wave her in! Rounding third, throw’s coming in, and it is not in time! A walk-off inside the park home run for Hannah Mitchell, the Dachshunds win this game 4-3! Mitchell showing off her speed, there, and the Dachshunds come back!

MD85: Walstreim Stingrays @ Newport Owls (Bot 4th, 0-0)
Bases loaded for the Owls with a good chance to go ahead. Eshian Harry Brentwood up to bat with two outs; this is a make-or-break scenario. Larry Cain is trying to strand the runners here in the fourth. First pitch, ball one. Larry Cain, taking his usual long wind-up. The 1-0, ball two. And there goes Brooke Sauter! Slides home, and she’s – safe! Safe! Brooke Sauter has just stolen home, and the Owls lead 1-0! A daring play from the Newmanistanian, but it works, what a move! 1-0 Owls, Cain was looking away for just about a second or two too long, and Sauter takes advantage!

MD91: Masmow Dragons @ Elephant Valley Homers (Bot 9th, 5-0)
Jay Kramer is looking to close out the game against the Homers, after the latter won 12 of their 13 last games. Of course, there’s more on the line for Kramer, who’s got a no-hitter going with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and an error on the game so far through 8.1, in which Kramer struck out eleven. He’ll have to get through the scary part of the line-up one final time; Alisen Moyamoto is up at the plate, the Chromatik WBC Champion struck out twice tonight. Kramer, first pitch, falls behind 1-0. Second pitch, swung on, fouled off. 1-1 count, next pitch, swung on, and Kramer’s 2-seamer gets behind the infield for a base hit! Moyamoto on first base, she’s broken up the no-hitter.

MD110: Elephant Valley United @ Masmow Dragons (Bot 11th, 7-7)
Acosta has a chance to break the tie here with a man on second, one out. Lexi Burrows, national teamer from Newmanistan on second base is probably fast enough to score the game-winning run on an average hit here. Llamanean Acosta is 3 for 5 tonight including a pair of home runs, a third one now would win this as well. Reliever Marcel Adams with the pitch, ball one. 1-0, ball two. The 2-0, strike one called. 2-1 count now, swing and a miss, it’s now a 2-2 count. That one’s high, full count. Adams, swung on, fouled back. Still a full count; swung on, and this will end it if it stays fair! Hit high, hit far, and it’s out of the Dragon Island Arena! Gabriel Acosta walks the thing off to conclude his three-homer game; what a game for the Llamanean!

MD136: Walstreim Stingrays @ Sophie City Monarchs (Bot 9th, 7-0)
It’s the bottom of the ninth inning here in Sophie City Field, where the Monarchs are hosting the Rays. The game’s 7-0 in favour of the Rays, with the Monarchs on pace to lose the second game of this series and their 16th dropped game from the last 19; but the far more interesting story is Crissey Battey on the bump having a no-hitter going through eight innings. The Rays’s starter from Sanford is playing a solid, although unspectacular season with so far, as the fifth wheel to the impressive Stingray rotation, but this might just be her night. She’s struck out nine, walking five with an error in there, too, and there’s one out with Sarzonian Cody Frazier on first base. Rookie Leo Jiminez is up next, picked with the 8th-overall, he has proven to be a capable hitter so far. Here’s the pitch, strike one called, Jiminez stares at the high heat. The 0-1, swung on, flying high, it’s deep, but safely hauled in in right field by Llamanean Alejandro Rivera. Two down, Battey is one out away from the second SNL-based no-hitter on the season. That’ll be Designated Hitter George Webber, traded for at the deadline by the Monarchs. Here’s the first pitch, ball one, just a little outside. The 1-0, swing and a miss, 1-1 count. Here’s the next pitch, Battey’s just surpassed 100 on the night; strike two called, which Webber doesn’t seem happy with. The 1-2, a strike away, swing and a miss, Crissey Battey has just no-hit the Sophie City Monarchs! The Sanfordan has just thrown an LPB no-hitter for the Walstreim Stingrays to defeat the Sophie City Monarchs, this one’s for history!

MD143: Newport Dolphins @ Rüsselsheim Blue Sox (Bot 2nd, 2-0)
Rémy Weber now up to bat with two on and none out, good chance for the Sox to get some runs back. Theriault on second, Hahn on first, a good opportunity for the Slugger chasing the 50-home run mark he’s fallen behind on lately, although he still leads the SNL. His fellow country-man, Haakon Kalberg, is pitching for the Dolphins. The first pitch, swung on, chopper to third, Kelly Tallis steps on third for the force, to second, Hahn’s out, to first, out! It’s a triple play, the Dolphins turn a triple play! 6-4-3 triple play, Tallis showing off her awareness and arm, gets Hahn out by a step there, and Weber isn’t fast enough to first to beat the throw from Hernandez! Triple play, the inning’s over!

Postgame Press Conference
Kriegersien @ South Americanastan

Micheal Kelly settled into his chair for another round of questions from reporters. He was in a good mood, for once, after the big win over Kriegersien. He adjusted his microphone before calling on a reporter.

"You, over there"

A tall, fair-skinned reporter began speaking.

"After the loss to Chromatika, many people doubted the team's ability to compete with the WBC's elite teams. With two more wins piled on after that, one over the historically competitive Kriegersien, do you think people have underestimated your team?"

Kelly sat back in his chair.

"I mean, yeah, definitely. I'm confident, personally, that we're just as good as some of the WBC's best pound-for-pound."

The reporter scribbled in his notepad.

"And to follow up on that, what do you think about South Americanastan's chances of a deep playoff run?"

Kelly took a deep breath.

"Everyone's hoping for one, and I think we're capable of it. The team has really found their stride recently, there's pretty good locker room culture. As far as I'm concerned, we're shooting for the round of 16, if not farther."

The reporter sat down, and Kelly pointed towards another reporter.

"And what about you, in the front?"

"Over the past few games we've seen Frank Monteforte and Jack Manning develop an... interesting dynamic. Do you have any opinions on that?"

Kelly thought for a moment before answering.

"I think it's great. Manning's a great mentor for Frank, even if they end up being partners in crime on the side. Clearly they share a fondness for music, too."

He sat back in his chair, looking over the crowd.

"That's it? Any other questions? Noone?"

He paused.

"Alright then. Guess we'll be wrapping it up early."
"If it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid"

Notes on our Grim Reapers

Traditionally, the Grim Reapers have taken the pitcher use with great dose of liberalism. Assuming the pitcher has a solid game, the pitching count is loosely observed, and it's absolutely in sight for the starter to go well into seventh or even eighth inning. That said, it is just as likely for the starting pitcher to get yanked within first three innings if one allows too many runs early into the game, which of course have happened before. In those cases, expect at three to five pitchers to be used for remainder of the game.

The Grim Reapers, as with their equivalents in other sports, are very aggressive- it's in their playing colours and will stay like that forever. While they do lack fast players, most of the outfielders and some infielders do have very good sense in stealing bases or making right decisions when taking risks, so while an occasional whoopsie-daisie with early outs do happen, it's not be all end all. Of course, we also have to remember that this is counted into the selection criteria, which means that both the infielders and outfielders are expected to be proficient in defence and even prepare for multiple positions. This is more the case with infielders than outfielders, but both have seen flexible use of such players before anyway.

Of course, there is a bit of complicated situation with the Quebecois history and geographic realities. Traditionally, baseball has been a fairly racially and regionally ubiquitous sport in Quebec, though there are strong regional and ethnic elements that are noticeable to it. Traditionally, there is strong sense of regional pride that derives from many of the iconic QBO franchises that have defined its history, as six regions traditionally dominate in both high school and pro baseball output, which reflects well into the first round of QBO Drafts. There is somewhat divide between those of Central Quebec (Montreal Twins vs. Quebec Bears), Southwest (Kingston Tigers vs. Kingston Blue Jays), Manitoba (California City Dodgers), Southeast (Halifax Giants), Northwest (Attawapiskat Wiz) and Northeast (Ottawa Eagles). There are minor stylistic differences between the regions and how their players' play, but those don't factor as much as how they used to be. Ethnically, the sport does have more Korean-Quebecois players in general rule of thumb, though that means little in this day and age where most Quebecois, whether Indigenous, Caucasian, Korean or of other Commonwealth origins, are fairly mixed-raced. Still, Korean is the lingua franca of the baseball diamond and that continues to be a defining feature of the Quebecois baseball scene as whole.

The second half begins! And in another reality, we celebrate Opening Day!

"Half a century later, historians would all agree that this event in 1969 was a turning point in humankind's history. Without intending to, Bai became a key historical figure. But he never learned of this fact. Historians recorded the rest of his uneventful life with disappointment." -The Three-Body Problem

Which unseen moments were, in retrospect, turning points for the history of your nation and/or sports teams? Who are the anonymous actors who, perhaps unintentionally, changed the course of the future? Did they recognize their contributions later on, or did they remain oblivious to the effects of their actions?

RADIO TELEVIZIJA DOTIVIJA CITY - Sportski program 1

Our small nation is living great sports days. Dotivija is increasingly positioning itself on the world sports scene. After the very successful IBS baseball competition in which our young junior team from the Dotivija City baseball club achieved historic success, Dotivija baseball is participating in this competition but as a national team.
For now, just participate as much as we think.
Our team also achieved a great victory against the Chromatika team.
However, we have already blow up everything with this last match vs South Americanastan. Now we are in bottom of group again.
When we talk about these great sporting successes, our basketball is flourishing these days.
Namely, at the NCAA competition, university basketball players from Dotivija has the finalist of the conference, which is the DIF Faculty of Genia!
The brilliant young university students will compete against Blue Crescent Technical College in Manasses Park(outdoor baseball stadium) in Aissa, Banija. This is biggest success of our basketball ever.
But that is not the end dear viewers. Dotivija has her first historic Olympic medal!
As part of the DotRas Unified Olympic Team, Dotivian skier Mario Jakovčić won a silver medal in alpine skiing. In the men's downhill final, our skier was behind the winner Marko Vulić of Srednjaci 0.43sec, same as Aristos Parnassus of Electrum.
This is the second Olympic medal for our country and the first at the Winter Games. We have one from the summer games.
Livio Osim was also have a great success, setting a new Olympic record in speed skating, the 1000m short track.

Maybe in the continuation of the competition we will play better than we have so far. Maybe we manage to do better than being last in the group.
Anyway. Behind us are a lot of beautiful sports results and in front of us are a lot of sports events. It is possible to report with new great news and it is also possible to report with bad news. I am not a prophet but a sports reporter. See you.

If it's crazy but Works....

ST. CATHERINE - Here we go again. Following a 6-5 walk off win over Quintessence of Dust, the Barnettsville Blue Jays sit at 4-4, tied for third with Murderbum and Greater Nordics. We here at BSPN.com can't even fathom HOW they're doing it. We just see THAT they are.

Connor Eastwood takes the mound to start the ninth game of the group stage with a possibility of a second place finish still on the table. In the words of actor Clint Eastwood:

"You have to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

Banijan manager Isaac Oladipo, in the top of the 8th inning

Oladipo was pacing on the bench after the end of the 7th inning. Faraba Conateh, who had pitched so excellently throughout the game, simply wore down once he reached the seventh inning. It was a brilliant pitching duel, and unfortunately for Conateh, he was on the losing side. 0-0 through 6 innings, everyone knew that this would be a tight one, that it would have to be an extremely well-earned win. In the 7th, they had finally gotten to Conateh, when he put two runners on, with two outs. Oladipo, after visiting the mound and being told by Conateh that the pitcher felt 'fine', had left him in the game. The buck always stops with the manager though. Oladipo left him in, but it was a mistake. After going down 2-0 in the count, Conateh left a fastball right over the heart of the plate. Eshialand's designated hitter, Harry Brentwood, clobbered the ball into the gap, bringing home the two baserunners, including Rebecca Saunders scoring all the way from first base. The 2 out, 2 run double led Oladipo to pull his starter, and gave Eshialand the lead.

With Grant Porter dealing, Oladipo was unsure of how to approach this inning. "Porter is just an elite pitcher, through and through." Oladipo thought to himself. "How do we take a dude like him down?" The answer, of course, is that you don't. But Eshialand's manager made a curious decision- instead of throwing Porter into the game in the 8th inning, he went to the pen. Oladipo was glad for the moment. They were actually getting to Eshialand's bullpen, unlike their ability to get to the opposing starting pitcher. It was a tough game, one hell of a game. But, of course, like the last inning, it came down to an extremely high-leverage situation. Two outs, but the Banijans, down 2-1, had the bases loaded.

That meant Oladipo had a choice. Would he give the pressure packed moment to the youngster up to the plate, Ugonna Akachi? The answer was no. He looked down his bench, and he had the tried and true veteran, Sarjo Carr on there. Why not pinch hit him in a situation with the game on the line? "Look, Akachi is going to be a fixture in the national team for years to come." Oladipo had said in the post-game. "I figured, let's get some runs here, lets put Carr up to the bat. He was good for the situation - a little high pressure, on this stage, for a teenager. Carr has seen it all, and therefore can perform at this level." So Oladipo was fixated on the game. Carr went to a 2-2 count. Then, he fouled off four straight pitches.

"C'mon Sarjo..." Oladipo whispered to himself. And then the loud CRACK! of the bat as Sarjo Carr smashed the ball the other way, into the gap in right center. "GO! GO! GO!" Oladipo was yelling from the bench. Two runs scored easily. But it would be the final run that would be the hardest. It was the left fielder, Nyaniso Hani, who was wheeling around the bases. As Oladipo was yelling Go, it seemed as if he was literally climbing the dugout, he was so excited. Fortunately for him, who's cameras were on the manager? As the 3rd base coach waved him home, Oladipo was yelling. "SLIDE LEFT! SLIDE LEFT!" The opponents second baseman relayed the throw from the outfield to the catcher. While they appeared to get there at the same time, Hani's back side of the plate slide appeared to do just enough to avoid the tag from Eshialand's catcher.

"SAAAAAAFE!" The umpire yelled. The Banijan bench exploded, while the park was in stunned silence. Even Oladipo was leaping up. His decision to pinch hit Sarjo Carr had been validated, and suddenly, a team who's bats had been silenced all game were more than alive. Oladipo's blood was pumping. What a sport, what a game, what a moment. The Banijans would go on to win 5-2 with two more runs in the 9th, but this was a feather in the cap for Oladipo. In his post-game presser, he said as much. "This was a big win for the team. Sarjo Carr, to come in cold off the bench and hit that 3 run double.. that's about as clutch as it gets. A big win for us in the standings, as now we have a two game lead at the top of the table. But there's no use in resting on our laurels- we've got a tough trip to The 189 tomorrow. We gotta get on the plane, rest up, and then get ready to play."

Still got time
by Ralph Smith

After a series of completely disastrous results, Brookstation finally seemed to find some hope after gaining a victory over Camcity after a prolonged dry run.

For once it seemed that Brookstation's WBC campaign had come to a dead end but nobody expected us to gain our biggest win of the series.

Having defeated Camcity in the first leg, Brookstation were not expected to disappoint this time ( we weren't expected to deliver either considering our performance lately).

The match started again with Brookstation bringing forth their defensive style of play and scored no run for the first three innings. Luckily for Brookstation however, Camcity weren't a good opponent either and eventually Camcity struggled through not only the first three innings but the entire innings.

Coming back to Brookstation, they did manage to get a run in the fourth innings thanks to a fast between-base run by Cahill. This heavily influenced Brookstation's performance for the rest of the match and soon enough captain Harris hit his first home run of the Classic.
Soon after, in the very next innings Cahill battered a beautiful shot past the fence, hitting a three run homer and in the very same innings, Smith ended with a single mounting up Brookstation's total to six runs.

Chasing down six runs with four innings in hand is pretty much an impossible job but things got even smoother for Brookstation when the pitching did well enough to suffice and keep the Camcity team from scoring. The Camcity team did manage to single after a very long wait but that was of little significance to Brookstation who ended up getting their best victory of the classic. If Brookstation still wants to have a shot at qualifying, the team needs to improve their overall performance and the match against HUElavia will let us all know whether Brookstation stands a chance of surviving or not.

Batter Up!: Back To The Grind

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Apr 09, 2022 3:03 pm

Welcome back to the 54th World Baseball Classic and after a 4-1 first half was capped off with a tight 4-3 win in the Big D Nation, the Battin' Jags of TJUN-ia are back and ready to continue on this final run by trying to get the best record they can. Mylderm leads this group on H2H thus far, so the main strategy that Phillip Hellas-Verona was hoping to apply to the rest of the group stage was a fairly simple one: keep winning games to apply the pressure on the leaders. That's all you can really do...just keep winning and hope for the best.

That would certainly be the mindset in effect on the road at St Saratoga, a team we beat 11-1 on Opening Day but would certainly be looking for revenge on home soil. This game would certainly be a bit fun for the visitors as we mostly dominated proceedings. Bryce Calhoun was brought in by Angel Enrique in the 2nd while the 4th saw Enrique add a 3-run bomb to his RBI. Chris Harris was the starter and would pitch an 8-inning shutout before closer Carlos Buena conceded the hosts' only run of the day. 4-1 ballgame was certainly low-scoring, but a good start to the 2nd half for the Jags.

Mylderm shut out Big D 8-0 on the road, so the situation remains the same. Now, we head back to Portside for the first time since Game 1 as Rounders Field hosts the 2-4 Owls of Tikariot. Big game for both teams once more...let's see how it goes down. GO JAGS!

Disclaimers:
* this project would not be possible without the efforts from Super-Llamaland. The words and pictures on screen right now were made by me, but would not be possible without extensive background work from both of us. Please do grade accordingly.
* this RP series may, on occasion, mention numbers about your players. Feel free to ignore them if you don’t like them; but keep in mind that scoring rates are lower in the LPB, with roughly 10% fewer runs than in the MLB.
* quick note on amateur draft grades: S is best, followed by A, B, C, D, F)
* meaning of the dots next to players: Blue: All-Star | Silver: Silver Slugger | Gold: Golden Glove | Red: MVP | Purple: Evan Masorka winner | Lime: Reliever of the Year (each as of last season)

The All-Star game: A short summary

After the first ever Llamaphant Pro Baseball game, which was played in Cyclone Park, New Llama City, Super-Llamaland, it would normally have been the turn of South Newlandia to host the second All-Star game; however, that would present itself to be quite difficult. Compared to the size of Cyclone Park (and all other Llamanean ballparks, for that matter), South Newlandian stadiums pale in comparison. The only serviceable stadium, Elephant Stadium in Elephant Valley, was currently undergoing construction to make it, well, bigger than 15,000 seats. It would actually be the second time the stadium was expanded in just over a decade; but much had changed since then.
Anyhow, the South Newlandian League looked to play the All-Star game somewhere else, somewhere that fans could properly attend, a stadium worthy of the occasion. Now, if you’d just think for a second; what iconic stadiums do you know in Esportiva, maybe even in a place that’s especially good at baseball? Some well-known, culturally important spot in a nearby country?

The second LPB All-Star game would be played at the Tundra Falls Proving Grounds, Newmanistan*. They’ve got 61,000 seats, more than quadruple of what any South Newlandian stadium has, and that’s just in the baseball stadium has itself, not including all the other facilities. These days, it is most known for hosting the important NSSCRA races, including the finale, but it has also hosted the final series of the World Baseball Classic multiple times. It’s truly a spectacular stadium, perfect for the second Llamaphant Pro Baseball All-Star game.

It was the Super-Llamanean All-Stars taking the upper hand early, when the starter for the South Newlandian team, Juzo Sakaguchi, who had so far played for an ERA of just barely above 2 and a record of 9-3, allowed two to reach base before Banijan Luxolo Mbeki hit a two-out 2-RBI double that gave the Llamanean side a lead they’d never relinquish. Mbeki had notably played in the first All-Star game as well, but he’d been on the other side, losing with the South Newlandian team, before the Saints traded him in the off-season. The Super-Llamanean team did not relinquish this lead, ultimately winning 6-2; with Jenna Schuster, one of four Newmanistanian All-Stars able to play the All-Star game at home, of the New Llama Cyclones driving in two with a home run in the eighth inning. This earned her All-Star Game MVP honours, thanks to a 3 for 5, three RBI performance.

*as agreed to with Newman

A couple hours after Ranoria’s 8-1 loss to Zwangzug
Some small bar in Ranoria City

“Listen Jesse,” Nicholas Lux said as he pointed to one of the way-to-small monitors, “That son of a bitch, I won an MVP in Quebec and Shingoryeo, and I hate playing him. I just can’t get a read on the ball when he’s on the mound.”

“Unpleasant doesn’t seem to be faring too badly,” Jesse Griffith added, leaning back on two legs of his chair. They’d requested the Quebec game to be played, while Vincent Veltrone and Julian Breit sat across from them to watch the South Newlandia contest.

“Lucky hit,” Lux waved him off as the game went on, “You decide where you’re signing yet?”

“Nope,” Jesse was leaning on his knuckle, lazily slurping water from his straw, “Offers are coming in, I’m definitely nervous, first time I’ll have been out of the country for anything besides, well,” he waved his free hand around in the air a bit, “This.” The World Baseball Classic, of course.

“Well, we’d love to have you i-“

They were cut off when Vincent Veltrone jumped to his feet, pumping a fist in the air and nearly knocking the table down onto them. Lux caught it, while Jesse just sat there and let his water soak his shorts. “This is happening! This is happening!”

Jesse sighed and glanced up, “What’s happening?”

Veltrone didn’t answer, but Julian Breit filled him in. “Sevendia, they worship the number 7, oddly. South Newlandia is up six to nothing. So one more run,” he waved his hand around, “well, ya know.”

That one more run did come, and Veltrone couldn’t help but grin ear to ear, “Just made my night a little better. Oh,” he finally looked down and noticed Jesse Griffith, who was almost nodding off by now, “Sorry about the spill there, Jesse.”

Dotivija @ South Americanastan
Postgame Press Conference

Micheal Kelly walked into the press room, sitting in his chair and taking a sip out of his thermos. The vodka he had poured into the thermos hit him like a truck, and gave him a nice buzz to help him endure the inevitable grilling by the oft-brutal South Americanastanian press. He sighed, before calling on a reporter.

"You, in the back."

The reporter stood up, and looked at his notepad.

"Previously, you stated that you 'Couldn't care less' what Frank Monteforte did in the offseason and during his service in Angola. With the recent SAAF bombing of a village in Zambia, do you still have the same feelings about Monteforte's service.

Kelly snapped into action as his blood began to boil.

"I still hold those feelings, and if you dipshits researched for a couple seconds before you tried to ask me gotcha questions, you'd know that Monteforte doesn't serve in the SAAF, he serves in the SAAC. Next question, please. Hank, I can see you jonesing for a quote, what's your question?"

A short, blonde reporter stood up.

"With Monteforte still not having announced his intention of whether to reenlist in the SAAC after his national service, should we take this indecision as a lack of regret for his actions?"

Kelly gave a slow, deliberate answer.

"No comment. You, in the front."

Another reporter shot up from their chair.

"Photos have recently surfaced of Frank Monteforte participating in a fireforce operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an action which violates international law. Is his continued participation in the team a sign of you placing performance over morals?"

Kelly took a swig from his thermos before answering.

"Fuck off with all this bullshit about Monteforte. I'm sick of getting all these questions about whether I support what he does over there. I am here to manage a baseball team, not be a damn political pundit. If none of you have baseball related questions, we're done here."

“I love sports, I just can’t get next to hockey. See, I think Americans like to savor situations. One down, bottom of the ninth, one run game, first and third, left handed batter, right hand reliever, infield at double play depth, here’s the pitch. But scoring in hockey seems to come out of nowhere. The play-by-play guy is always shocked. LePeiter passes to Huckenchuck who skates past the blue line. Huckenchuck, of course, was traded from Winnipeg for a case of Labatts after sitting out last season with… Oh my God, he scores!” – John Hoynes

One Down

CONCORDIANS - Part one of the experiment worked.

Facing an easy first test, Barnettsville's Bad News Bears held on for a 6-4 victory against Concordians. The Jays put up a 4-spot in the second, and the group effort held the hosts hitless until the sixth. Yes, we know, unlikely. But somehow, some way, they managed to do it. Pop ups and at-em balls, even a strikeout-caught stealing double play after a walk in the fourth. The comeback attempt started in the seventh as Concordians put up three, and had the tying run at second until Tyler-James Gonzales induced a flyout to left-center. Barnettsville put up two in the eighth and allowed one in the bottom to set the final.

"Apparently, fighting for our playoff lives in a short series made those of us left play harder. We know it's not over yet. We probably have to win out to have a prayer," said Scott Luna, the starter tomorrow post-game.

Being that the remaining three games are all against those above them, and two (QoD and The Greater Nordics) are either in or would be presently, Barnettsville is techically playing playoff games just to get in to the playoffs.

Yeah...the plan of "just keep winning and hope for the best" got crushed in Portside as Rounders Field witnessed the Battin' Jags' worst night since 20-2. Nothing seemed to work in this ballgame and fair play to Jonathan Villiers and the Owls, they certainly deserved this win.

As for Phillip Hellas-Verona, he was certainly not happy with that performance and urged his team to "not lose sight of their goal of a perfect end to their TJUN-ian careers". We're off to Hydrogen Cyanide Field in Drawk City to play Drawkland's Base Corps - let's hope we can get out of there with a big bounceback win and will get us back on track. GO JAGS!
